1.1 About Taiwan • The Country Taiwan, also known as Formosa (from Portuguese: Ilha Formosa, "Beautiful Island"), is an island situated in East Asia and located off the southeastern coast of Mainland China. "Taiwan" is also commonly referred to as the Republic of China (R.O.C.). The capital city of R.O.C. is Taipei. Separated from the area commonly referred to as Mainland China by the 120 kilometers wide Taiwan Strait, the main island of Taiwan is 394 kilometers long and 144 kilometers wide. To the northeast are the main islands of Japan and the East China Sea, with the southern end of the Ryukyu Islands of Japan directly to the east; the Philippines lie to Taiwan’s south across the Bashi Channel. The mountainous island spans the Tropic of Cancer and is covered by tropical and subtropical vegetation.

• Languages The written language, which is intelligible to speakers of all Sinitic tongues, is Chinese, and is the only pictograph-based writing system still in use on a large scale. While Mainland China chose to adopt “simplified” characters in a bid to ameliorate the problem of widespread illiteracy, in Taiwan “traditional” written characters are still employed. Though the official spoken language of R.O.C. is Mandarin Chinese, large segments of the population also speak Hoklo or Hakka.
• Exchange rate The exchange rate for Taiwan is about 32 NT dollars per 1 US dollar. It generally fluctuates in the 31-34 range. You can find the exact daily rate for any currency from the Bank of Taiwan website at: http://www.bot.com.tw/english/ Pages/default.aspx

Taiwan generally enjoys an oceanic and subtropical monsoon climate. The entire island experiences hot, humid weather from June through September. The temperature during the cool, mild winters averages 18˚C / 64˚F, while in the summer the average temperature rises to 31˚C / 88˚F. Taiwan’s annual weather patterns are strongly influenced by the East Asian monsoonal flow. The winter monsoon lasts from October to late March and brings continuous rain to Northeastern Taiwan, while the central and southern parts of the island experience mostly sunny winters. Many of Taiwan’s offshore islands are buffeted by powerful winds during this time. The summer monsoon begins with the “plum rain” season (which is named due to its coincidence with the plum season) in May and June and usually ends in late September. During this period, the South experiences high levels of precipitation while the North remains comparatively dry. Natural hazards such as typhoons from May to September and earthquakes are common in the region.
• Special Weathers of Taiwan and Earthquakes
Why Study In Taiwan
6
Although Taiwan is located in the subtropics, in winter, cold fronts from Siberia often drive temperatures to below 10 degrees Celsius and high mountainous areas even receive snow. In summer, however, due to the influence of the subtropical Pacific high-pressure system, temperatures frequently rise to 35 degrees Celsius and above. The island’s mercurial weather patterns are further complicated by the Central Mountains. Taiwan experiences relatively frequent seismic activity due to its location on the circum-Pacific seismic belt at the junction of the Manila and Ryukyu trenches along the west side of the Philippine Sea plate (PSP). Geologists have identified a total of 42 active faults on
the island. According to the Central Weather Bureau, from 1994 to 2011, about 22,000 earthquakes occurred annually in the Taiwan area, of which around 1,000 were felt by people each year. In Central and Western Taiwan, earthquakes are less frequent, of a smaller scale and with shallower focal depths. There was one exception to this, however, on September 21, 1999, when a major earthquake occurred near Jiji Township in Nantou County, about 150 kilometers south of Taipei, registering 7.3 on the Richter scale. It was the largest seismic event to affect Taiwan in the 20th century.
•Culture Popular sports in Taiwan include: Badminton, Baseball, Basketball, Cheerleading, Golf, Martial ar ts, Swimming, Table tennis, Tennis and Volleyball. Taiwanese tea culture includes tea arts, the tea ceremony, and a very social way of enjoying tea. The most common teas are Oolongs, especially Taiwanese Oolong teas such as Iron Goddess tea and Alpine Oolong tea. Many of the classical arts can be seen in the tea culture, for example: calligraphy, flower arts, incense arts, and so on. Karaoke is incredibly popular in Taiwan, where it is termed KTV (karaoke television). This is an example of something the Taiwanese have drawn, on scale, from contemporary Japanese culture. During typhoons, many young Taiwanese will spend the day singing karaoke or playing mahjong. Many people enjoy watching miniseries, collectively called Taiwanese drama. Boasting over 9,200 convenience stores in an area of 35,980 km² and a population of 22.9 million, Taiwan has the Asia Pacific’s, and perhaps the world’s, highest density of convenience stores per person: one store per 2,500 people or .0004 stores per person. Cell phones are very popular in Taiwan. The mobile penetration rate stands at just over 100%. Because of their high use, phones in Taiwan have many functions and are becoming cheaper. Hip-hop culture from the United States also flourishes in Taiwan. You can get more information about Taiwan culture at: http://www.culture.tw/

The culture of Taiwan is a blend of Confucianism, Han Chinese, Japanese, European, American, global, local, and Taiwanese Aboriginal cultures, which are often perceived in both traditional and modern understandings. The common socio-political experience in Taiwan gradually developed into a sense of Taiwanese cultural identity and a feeling of Taiwanese cultural awareness, which has been widely debated domestically. In recent years, the concept of Taiwanese multiculturalism has been proposed as a relatively apolitical alternative view, which has allowed for the inclusion of Mainlanders and other minority groups in the continuous redefining of Taiwanese culture as collectively held systems of meaning and customar y patterns of thought and behavior shared by the people of Taiwan.
1.2 The Education System In terms of higher education, there are 162 higher educational institutions in Taiwan with different emphases in academic research, teaching, and technical education. Among them are 120 universities (47 public) and 42 colleges (6 public), with 15 focusing on vocational training. With respect to the general education system, the educational structure comprises of schooling stages at different levels with approximately 22 years of formal study. The entire process includes 2 years of preschool education, 6 years of primary school, 3 years of junior high school, 3 years of senior high school, 4 years of college or university (7 years for medical school), 2-4 years of master's degree program studies, and 4-7 years of doctoral degree program studies.
• Compulsory Education
Why Study In Taiwan
The Ministr y of Education (MOE) has i m p l e m e n te d a s y s te m o f n i n e - y e a r compulsory education, including 6 years of primary education and 3 years of junior high school education. After junior high school, students may apply for or take entrance examinations to attend senior high school or vocational high school.

• Senior High and Senior Vocational Education There are two types of institutions above the junior high school level. These include senior high school and vocational high school, both of which take three years to complete. Vocational high schools offer courses in areas such as agriculture, industr y, business, maritime studies, marine products, medicine, nursing, home economics, drama and arts.
• Junior College Education Junior colleges fall into two categories: the five-year junior college and the two-year junior college, each having a different set of admission requirements. Five-year junior colleges admit junior high school graduates and offer a five-year course of study. Twoyear junior colleges admit vocational high school graduates and offer a two-year course of study.
• Undergraduate Education University undergraduate programs require four years of study. However, students who are unable to fulfill their requirements
within the designated time may be granted extension of up to two years. Specialized undergraduate programs such as dentistry or medicine require six to seven years, including an internship period of one year.
• Graduate Education Graduate programs leading to a master's or doctoral degree require one to four years and two to seven years, respectively. However, students who enter graduate school as part of their on-job training can be granted an extension if they fail to finish the required courses or to complete their thesis or dissertation on time.
•International Education in Taiwan The number of international students i n Ta i w a n h a s i n c r e a s e d w i t h t h e internationalization efforts of the higher education institutions from 7,844 students in 2003 to 43,957 in 2013, mainly studying in language, business and administration

Why Study In Taiwan
14
I am a foreign student. When I applied for the Vest 500 program I did not know anything about Taiwan, but today I have lived here for three years— so I want to share with everyone some of my experiences about living in Taiwan. Taiwan is a small island in Eastern Asia; its climate is marine tropical, so I feel very comfortable here. But from January to May, do not forget your umbrella when you go out, because this time is the rainy season. In addition, you should be careful about typhoons (common between July and October) and earthquakes. In fact, it will not be a big trouble if you live in the city. Living in Taiwan is a good chance for me to enjoy Chinese foods: beef noodles, roasted duck, smoked chicken and BBQ; especially during Mid-autumn Festival. Taiwanese style fast-food chains in the night markets are my favorite; very tasty, very cheap. But they caused me have a problem with my weight. My BMI has moved up to 26 after I came to Taiwan to study. In Taiwan, the official national language is Mandarin. I spent my first year in Chung Yuan University learning Chinese, and formerly passed the intermediate level on the test, which is called TOCFL (the Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language- standardized test developed for non-native speakers of Chinese). This certificate is a required document to apply for studies in my university. In my opinion, speaking Chinese is the most important ability to study here because almost every professor uses Chinese in class. The first semester, I did not understand what my professor was saying. Before the exam, I spent all my effort and invested my heart to studying the textbook and class materials and used English to answer the questions. It was a very terrible semester and I failed three subjects. In fact, listening to and speaking Chinese are not difficult. I enjoy my time with the Taiji club (one kind of martial arts). Every morning, I wake up at six o'clock and go to campus to practice Taiji for about one hour with my friend. Taiji is so wonderful. For me, it is not only a martial art but also a philosophy. After practicing, we eat breakfast together, chat about our subjects, classmate or even about girls. Chatting with them is the best method to learn Chinese. In addition, I usually go to the library to read some Chinese novel like: "You are the Apple of My Eyes", "Girlfriend, Boyfriend" or "The Legend of the Condor Heroes". If it is raining, I will stay at home and watch a Taiwanese movie without subtitles. These are my methods to learn Chinese. Nowadays, I can use Chinese to communicate with locals or report to my professor. Three years is not a long time but it is enough for me to fall in love with Taiwan. I will live here at least until 2015, and I hope Taiwan will become my second home country.
Asia Hindriyanto from Indonesia
PhD student in the Department of Industrial and System Engineering Chung Yuan Christian University
When I received the Aceh government scholarship to study in Taiwan, I had doubts whether I could adapt well Amelia Imron here. The language, culture, and Ikob(Amel) environment is definitely different from Indonesia from my place of origin, which made International MBA (IMBA) me a little worried at the time I first National Cheng Kung University set foot here. However, all my doubts have been answered already. We were also very lucky, because for 1 month before college, we were given language training and cultural education that facilitated the introduction provided by ESIT so we feel confident in the face of "culture shock" in Taiwan. ESIT also helps in dealing with matters relating to the campus, scholarship procedures, and other related matters. The education system in Taiwan is good and most of the professors are graduates of well rated U.S. universities, making me fortunate to have access to quality international education. In the IMBA, students come from all over the world (USA, Europe and Asia) and it allows me to not only learn science, which is my focus, but also teaches me how to interact and cooperate with friends from around the world. In other words, I learned two things here: first, I can improve my "hard skills" in science, but I also have a chance to hone my "soft skills" and become a part of the global community. I like all things in Taiwan!! In addition to fulfilling my educational goals, Taiwan offers many other interesting things, such as: the friendly people and Taiwan culture, many new friends, culinary adventures (although rather difficult to find halal food here), cultural tourism (nature, temples, museums, national parks, etc.), and most importantly: learning Mandarin. wo xihuan Taiwan..! (read: I love Taiwan).

My name is Hindriyanto, I come from Indonesia. Currently, I am a PhD student in the Department of Industrial and System Engineering, Chung Yuan Christian University. Study in Taiwan enhances my academic performance such as my research skill and my analytical competence. It also broadens my network. Many students all over the world come to study in Taiwan; therefore I can make friends with locals as well as international students. Living in Taiwan also gives me the opportunity to learn about Chinese and Taiwanese culture. Besides, there are a lot of interesting places to visit. The good transportation system really supports students who like to travel to places on a lower budget.

Seek knowledge even as far as China. The idea of this sentence that I often hear, and organized religion, is to always learn, even by going to a distant state. Starting as just a dream, I finally had the opportunity to study in Taiwan (Republic of China).
Why Study In Taiwan
16
Personal Data: My name Basrul, born in Sigli, and I spent time in the City of Teenagers fighting Bireuen. I am FMIPA Mathematics University alumni, Shiite Kuala Banda Aceh. I am currently receiving a full scholarship from the Aceh Pemerintath for the 2011 period to pursue master's studies in computer science at National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) in Taiwan. I chose Taiwan because the campuses and educational system is very nice. Development and creation of new technologies is very quickly too. Taiwan is the most disciplined, orderly and crazy when it comes to studies (studying diligently and aggressively to really master it). Life in Taiwan began in August 2011, with my first foot step made in Formosa. During the month of August, during Ramadhan (1432 H precisely), I took Mandarin language training at Chung Yuan Christian University, located in Zhongli, 15 minutes away by bus from the airport. During the training progresses, everything was good and professionally handled by Elite Study in Taiwan (ESIT). Mandarin Training is not a problem. It was very pleasant studies were supported with complete facilities. In this non-Muslim state, the food is the main problem. There were no kosher restaurants nearby, however there are many Indonesian restaurants with average non-halal. The owners are mostly non-Muslim Indonesians. However, there is a mosque in Zhongli and it is near a halal restaurant which is a combination of Indo,, Pakistan, India, Taiwan style foods and the owners are Muslim. Life for Muslims in Taiwan is very nice. Of the total population of 23 million people there are about 60,000 Muslims. There are 6 mosques spread over different cities. Grand Mosque and a small mosque are located in Taipei, Longgang Mosque is in Zhongli, and there are 3 others in Kaoshiung, Taichung and Tainan, respectively. In general, the mosques, often provide food and cakes for the congregation to enjoy together after prayer. During the month of Ramadan, an Iftar menu is also available and every Muslim is offered presents. These moments are rarely missed by the students. In addition, there are 31 restaurants spread out in different towns, 16 of which are located in Taipei, that have a halal certificate from the Chinese Muslim Association. Taiwan University Life: In September 2011, I headed for my campus lectures at NTHU. The NTHU Campus is located in Hsinchu city, near the Science Park. I prefer living in the campus dorms rather than outside in a rental. On campus, there are single dorm-rooms, double-rooms and multi-rooms (can be 4 or 6 people / room). The cost per semester is very cheap and affordable. In addition, the campus provides space for Muslim prayer and Muslims can even form clubs as they have in NTHU, NCTU, Asia University, Chung Hwa Yuan Ze and others. But there are rarely on campus halal restaurants. For Muslims one option is to go to a vegetarian restaurant. If you are not happy with this, cooking for yourself is another alternative. At the hostel we can cook and there is a chicken and halal beef at the supermarket.
In fact, pursuing advanced studies in Taiwan is not a tough call. Especially Taiwan is very supporting for Muslim students living in Taiwan. With the TOEFL 500, if I can do well academically I can get into a top school in Taiwan. When I applied, I received acceptance from 3 universities: National Tsing Hua, National Chiao Tung (NCTU) and National Dong Hua. In addition, there is a wide range of scholarships from the college, from the Taiwan government for higher education and other scholarships that support the lectures in Formosa. The systems and facilities are also very nice. Most professors are alumni of the best universities abroad. The interesting thing is that campuses are often used as tourist attractions or places where families spend the holiday or weekends together. I have often seen this at NTHU, especially now, with the establishment of a new library which has a beauty and high quality that attracts visitors from outside. Various events were held on campus ranging from exhibitions, concerts, and even a job fair. This makes the campus atmosphere very interesting from day to day. Only during Chinese New Year do things change as all the local students return home. Travel Taiwan: There are many tourist attractions and excellent transportation in Taiwan. The Taipei 101 Tower, which is the second tallest tower (509m) in the world after the Burj Dubai tower (818m), is a must see. There are 101 floors and to go up to the summit it costs NT $ 450 (about Rp. 150,000). There is also a wide range of museums, temples and traditional markets. When holidays come, or during summer, winter and spring break, campus to campus trips can be enjoyable for foreign student. Transportation in Taiwan is very nice; from the bus, regular train and super fast train (High Speed Train). It also makes day trips very convenient and affordable even for students. During winter break in 2012, with a cost of NT $ 599 (approximately Rp. 210.000) me and my other friends went around the whole of Formosa in 4 days by train. There is a student travel package (TR-PASS) for 5, 7 or 10 days travel on regular trains available to foreign students. It is very cheap compared to the normal price However there is a risk that there will be no place to sit, unless there is an empty bench.

Master’s of Aristektur and Urban Planning Chung Hua University
I have spent 2 years in Taiwan to study a master’s degree. I chose Taiwan because Taiwan is a country that has developed its education system very well; and besides that, learning mandarin was another motivation for me to choose to go to school in Taiwan. During my schooling in Taiwan, I experienced many ups and downs.
I had a hard time to finding halal food and places of worship; there were also language differences and cultural differences to deal with. However, there were also a lot of positive things that I saw. The citizens in Taiwan are very compliant with government regulations and they keep environment clean with a litter ban and a ban on smoking in public places. They have a sophisticated transportation system and the security is maintained. Tourist areas in Taiwan are also very nice and attractive. They offer very interesting places to visit such as the Taipei 101 Tower, Taroko National Park, and others. I am very grateful to the Government of Aceh which has given me the opportunity to get an education so that I can feel the experience of living in the country of Formosa.

Why Study In Taiwan
18
My name is Nguyen Van Hoa, I am the 4th year PhD student at the CYCU. My major is International Finance. I am very fortunate to have been granted a scholarship which is sponsored by the Vietnamese Government, (the 322 Project). In 2005, when I first came to Kaohsiung International Airport for my MBA course at the KUAS, I was delighted and surprised by the warm welcome of the local students and professors here. The feeling of emptiness when living far away from home disappeared. The hospitality of the local people helped me to adapt to the new environment. After graduation, I returned to Vietnam for teaching. In 2010, I had the precious opportunity to turn back to Taiwan when I received a scholarship from the 322 Project funding by the Vietnam Government for a doctoral program. With the supports of the Elite Study in Taiwan Office, I got useful advices for the whole application process. Finally, I decided to attend CYCU for my doctoral degree. I was surprised by the friendship and mysterious culture in Taiwan. I was so excited to take part in the Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-autumn ceremony, and Lunar New Year. Taiwan is a country that pays serious attention to education. Overseas students can find good opportunities to learn with different teaching resources and a good studying environment. It is no doubt that this is the best choice for my further study. And this is what motivated me to choose Taiwan for the second time. At CYCU, I was prompted to integrate with student life and social activities. I am currently the team leader of Vietnam students at CYCU and the Vice-president of Vietnamese Student in Taiwan Association. The Vietnamese Student in Taiwan Association works as a bridge between Vietnamese students and other communities in Taiwan. The Association has 45 university members in Taiwan with the aim of promoting Vietnamese culture and create a pleasant atmosphere for Vietnamese students here. Vietnamese students can join the Association from their University and enjoy different activities, such as cultural exchanges, birthday parties and sport day to enrich their lives. Through these activities, the Vietnamese Student Association creates a beautiful image of the Vietnamese people and their country for international friends in Taiwan. I have truly enjoyed my student life in Taiwan during the past six years. It will be one of the most beautiful and unforgettable memories for the rest of my life. I love Taiwan!

With the development of the social economy and implementation of the National Health Insurance (NHI), Taiwan's medical standards and quality of healthcare have been upgraded significantly. Foreigners in Taiwan are also able to enjoy these high quality medical services. Foreigners with an Alien Resident Certificate who have resided in Taiwan for four months must enroll in the National Health Insurance program. This is done at the local administrative office. Before they are eligible for the NHI program, students can either purchase their own insurance coverage or participate in a temporary health insurance program offered by the foreign students’ office located within their campuses. When traveling overseas for a short period of time, either on business or on vacation, with plans of returning to Taiwan with a valid ARC, foreigners must remain enrolled in the NHI program.

Individuals who wish to open an account without an ARC card have to obtain a universal identification number at the local police office.

There are over a thousand branches all over the island, providing both regular and express postal services. International students can apply for a postal box at the nearest branch.Students who receive a Taiwan Scholarship need to open an account at a post office of Chunghwa Post. In addition, most convenience stores serve as pick up locations for international and domestic express services.
Living Costs As the standard of living in Taiwan improves, the cost of living also rises on the island. Although it is still lower than many Asian countries, most imported goods and many types of services in Taiwan can be expensive. If you 'go local' and eat at food stalls and noodle stands, your expenses should not exceed NTD 300 a day. On the other hand, you can spend a lot more if you decide to go to fancy restaurants. Many universities provide international students with inexpensive or free dormitories as part of the scholarship package. For food and other expenditures, the cost could range from NTD 6,000 to 12,000 per month depending on the area of residence. Living in Taiwan

In Taiwan, cars are driven on the right. Students with international driver’s licenses may drive in Taiwan. However, driving is not recommended for those who are unfamiliar with the unique road and traffic conditions in Taiwan. International or foreign driver’s license holders can apply for ROC driver licenses at the local Motor Vehicles Office.

▪ Getting the Proper Visa ▪ Before Your Arrival
6.1 Getting the Proper Visa Before you leave your home country for Taiwan, you will need to apply for a visa at your local Taiwanese Consulate. You will be required to bring along the following items with you to apply for your VISA:
• You should bring some formal wear as well as traditional clothing from your culture for special occasions.
• Letter of Acceptance from your university • Valid passport • 2 passport sized photographs • An application processing fee (varies country to country) • A statement showing that you have enough funds Useful information
40
We suggest you first call your local Taiwanese Consulate and inform them on the specifics of your intended trip to Taiwan for study and ask them about what documents are required for the VISA application. You should apply for a residence visa although sometimes a tourist visa is issued for first entry to Taiwan.
6.2 Before Your Arrival Once your confirmation of enrolment comes through and you’ve secured your student visa, it’s time to start thinking of some of the practicalities of travelling to Taiwan. • It’s worth packing a few mementos from home that will give you some comfort when you’re missing your friends and family, but keep in mind that most airlines have a check-in baggage restriction of about 20kg (about 44lb). • The type of clothing you should bring with you depends on which part of the country you will be living in, and the time of year you arrive. The Taiwanese fall coincides with the first academic semester in September, which is when most international students arrive. This means that you can probably get by with jeans, T-shirts and light jackets. If you arrive in time for the
6
second academic semester by mid-February, you’ll need to pack some warm sweaters, long-sleeved T-shirts and a coat to cope with the winter.
• You can bring your MP3 player along for the journey, and mobile phone and other electronic equipment, but make sure to get power adaptors suitable for use in Taiwan so you can charge them. • Many international students bring some pre-packaged food from home in their luggage. • You should also try to find a place for photocopies of all your important documents: passport, visa, flight tickets, insurance documents, credit cards, ATM cards and your admission letter. • Make sure you also leave copies of all these documents with someone at home in case you lose the originals.
• You should also bring enough Taiwan currency in cash for your first few days. Without carrying large amount of cash with you, credit cards are accepted at major hotels, resorts, shops and restaurants. It is probably best, in terms of convenience and getting the best rates, to change money at the airport on arrival.
