HOW TO GET AROUND PORTO PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Andante Ticket You can buy and charge your Andante ticket at any metro station. Porto is divided by zones. You charge your Andante depending on how many zones you’re going to cross during your trip. For the entirety of the event, the maximum number of zones we’re gonna cross is 2, so your ticket needs to be a Z2. In order to travel by metro, it is mandatory that you buy an Andante ticket. When traveling by bus, you can get a bus ticket inside, although Andante is valid as well and more affordable. The bus fee is 2€ while the Andante trip (Z2) is 1,25€ (the first time you’ll pay an extra 0,60€ for the card). If you come from the Airport, your Andante needs to be charged with a Z4 trip and it will cost 2€ + 0,60€. One Andante trip is valid for 1 hour starting from the time you validate it. During this hour, you can travel how many times you like to whatever line, using any type of transport available (bus, metro or even suburban train) as long as each trip doesn’t go further than 2 zones. If you come from the Airport, Andante will be valid for 1 hour and 15 minutes.

PLACES TO VISIT

Aliados Avenue This is the heart of Porto, where the city hall is located. Lots of people get together in the avenue during any celebration of the city, to watch concerts, fireworks, drink, party and, overall, have a good time. The buildings here are from the barroque era. We also have the most beautiful McDonald’s in the world (according to 9gag). São Bento Train Station Classified as humanity patrimony by UNESCO, it’s the central train station of Porto that thousands of people cross everyday. It was inaugurated 106 years ago. The beautiful tile panels inside represent important moments of the history of Portugal, from the transports evolution to scenes of the daily life. Lello Bookshop Built in a neo gothic style, Lello Bookshop was first opened in 1906, being 116 years old. It’s most known for serving as an inspiration for J.K. Rowling in the Harry Potter books, although she denied it on twitter in 2020 (as if that year wasn’t bad enough already!).

PLACES TO VISIT

Clérigos Tower The Clérigos Tower was inaugurated in 1750. The tower’s architect was the Italian, Nicolau Nasoni. Like most of the buildings in the center, this tower is barroque and is more than 75 meters high. After climbing 240 steps, the view over the city is stunning. Porto’s Rectorate The Rectorate of the University of Porto served a lot of purposes. It was once The Polytechnic Academy of Porto, an Orphans School, then it became different faculties over the years (Fine Arts, Engineering, Economics and, lastly, Sciences Faculty until 2007). Nowadays, besides being the rectory of the University of Porto, it also functions as the Museum of Science, Zoology and Geology as well as the Museum of Archeology and Prehistory. Galerias de Paris Center of Porto’s nightlife, Galerias do Porto are composed with two streets of bars and clubs. This is the place to go after a warm-up. From here on, there are two options: pick one bar/club and stay there all night or just jump from one to another, since a bunch of them have no entrance fee.

PLACES TO VISIT

The Cathedral Known as “Sé”, it’s located in the heart of the historical center of Porto and it’s one of the main and more antique monuments of Portugal. Through the years, it has been object of several expansions and remodelations, but the original line is still there. Luiz I Bridge Luiz I Bridge is a double-decked metal arch bridge that connects the cities of Porto and Gaia. It was planned by Théophile Seyrig, altough it’s a common mistake to think it was by Gustave Eiffel. The less known bridge D. Maria Pia was the one who was planned by both Seyrig and Eiffel. Nowadays, it’s the only bridge in Porto crossable by both metro and car, or simply by walking. Ribeira Designated as World Heritage by UNESCO, Ribeira Square spreads alongside the Douro River and it’s used to be a center of intense commercial and manufacturing activity since the middle ages. Today, the Ribeira Square is filled with restaurants, and it’s one of the favorites spots for tourists and locals to get a nice view of the river.
