VILA REAL

VILA REAL, THE WONDERFUL KINGDOM Vila Real is known as the “Wonderful Kingdom” - expression used for the first time by our beloved writer, Miguel Torga .Situated on a plateau between the Corgo and Cabril rivers has 30,000 inhabitants in which 7,000 of these are students. The city is framed by natural landscapes known as “ Escarpas do Corgo “ with the backdrop of the mountains of Alvão and Marão. With 700 years of history, is the front door to the “Alto Douro Wine Region” and a city that combines the old - in the historic center - with the modernity of the theater , shopping center and the liveliness brought by students from the University of Trás -os- Montes and Alto Douro , in the ‘Pioledo’ area and the city hall .

Mateus Palace

It was built in the first half of the eighteenth century by Antonio Jose Botelho Mourão, 3rd Morgado de Mateus. The Baroque architecture of Italian style, is attributed to Nicolau Nasoni. Apart from the Baroque splendor of the main facade and the decorative richness, made up of curved cornices, gables, spiers and statuary, impresses the rationality of the plant and the accuracy of the metric and modulation. In 1911 it is classified as a National Monument.

Corgo Park The Corgo Park is located on the banks of the

river that gives it its name, and has an area of about 33 hectares; It is attached to the Forest Park, a true lung of the city, and incorporates various equipment: multi-purpose sports fields, walking itineraries, picnic area of Codessais (equipped with grills and tables), open public swimming pool, playground, cafes and teahouses; you can still see old mills, some of them recovered.

Museum Of Vila Velha is the most interesting place if

you’re interested to know the history of Vila Real and the historical center’s past. Is divided in two sections, 1st floor is dedicated to the temporary expositions about several thematics. The 2nd floor is dedicated to medium or long time expositions, usually about archeology.
