Welcome to the Winter/Spring 2014 edition of our Parks and Recreation Program Guide. Please use the guide to find out more about our high quality programming and first-class parks and facilities. Our Parks and Recreation programs are aimed at all age groups and all ability levels, from youngsters learning traditional activities, to seniors enjoying youthful endeavours. Esquimalt is an age-friendly community, so I am pleased to see that recreation staff are supporting an initiative by the Esquimalt Neighbourhood House Society to help our seniors stay independent in their home and connected to the community. The initiative is aimed at providing services for seniors (65+), including help with grocery shopping, house cleaning, gardening, or any other tasks that can prove difficult as we age. Seminars and dropin sessions will be offered at the Recreation Centre for this pilot project. We’re getting active with our annual New Year’s Day Levee this year with a free swim and skate that also includes the traditional Council meet and greet at the Recreation Centre. See you there! Also in January, join recreation staff members for the Esquimalt Recreation Centre Open House, and lace up the runners for the ever popular LifeMark Health 5K on March 22nd, a terrific all-ages event. Spring Break Camps, great fun for the kids, will be held March 10th to 21st this year. We hope you enjoy the improvements we have made to the Recreation Centre. I am very impressed with the new look -- including the significant upgrade to the atrium -- and look forward to the new opportunities these improvements present. Esquimalt Parks continues with its impeccable maintenance and refurbishment activities throughout the Township’s parks and green spaces. The restoration of historic Memorial Park is a prime example of preserving existing heritage values while incorporating modern construction and landscaping techniques. The new entryway with inlaid symbolic poppy design is charming, fitting, and will be enjoyed for generations to come.

For those many visitors and residents who enjoy a brisk walk along the West Bay Walkway, I am also happy to announce that the department will be installing a plumbed washroom facility at the Head Street terminus by the end of 2013.

On behalf of Council I encourage everyone to take advantage of the wealth of opportunities available through our Parks and Recreation Department.

The advent of the 100th anniversary of World War I is almost upon us. By the fall of 1914, thousands of young Canadians had taken up the call to arms. Over 400,000 Canadians would eventually serve overseas in what would be called “The War to End All Wars,” many of them from Esquimalt. The first Canadian troops to arrive in France were the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, formed at the outbreak of the war and a regiment with a close connection to Esquimalt. Work Point Barracks became a key training centre. Private Charles Durfee Harper, reported in 1917 that “Each man has a cot, straw mattress, pillow, two sheets and four blankets and a shelf over his cot and pegs for his uniforms. The building is of brick with lots of windows – light, snug and warm. Our room is heated by a coal stove and also has two open fire places. It is pretty cozy, in the evenings, to sit about the fire studying.” This would prove to be a far cry from the death and disease of the Western Front. The Archives has information on the men and women from Esquimalt who served in World War I. We are dedicated to preserving this and all aspects of our community’s heritage and you can help. If you have material that could help us tell this story, please let us know. Also, we are very interested in finding city directories from the 1950s and 1960s. Did you know, the Archives can help you research your family, your house, your neighbourhood and other interests?
