Welcome!
esquimalt.ca/recreation
Mayor’s Message Welcome to the spring/summer 2014 edition of our Parks and Recreation Program Guide. Please use the guide to find out more about our high quality programs on offer and discover new initiatives for healthy living. Please keep the guide handy, it covers the time period of April to September 2014. Well Esquimalt, are you ready for the 2014 version of the Bloomin’ Beautiful Home and Garden Contest? This year promises to be bigger and better than ever. It’s all about pride of community, something I know Esquimalt has in abundance. Please join in on the fun, spruce up your home and garden, and share in the common effort of community beautification. Stay tuned at www.esquimalt.ca for upcoming announcements. Need some ideas to get your dream garden going? The Recreation Department is putting on a variety of gardening workshops this spring. Learn how to grow your own herbs, design your own eco garden, or create an organic garden. Why not get the kids involved as well? There is a “Growing Gardener” program for youngsters aged 4 – 8 years. Your Council is committed to promoting Healthy Esquimalt, and the Parks and Recreation Department makes it easy to stay healthy. Did you know that the pool and weight room in the Rec Centre are both open from 5:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. every day, including statutory holidays? Don’t forget about Esquimalt Active Park right next to the Rec Centre for a quick outdoor workout when the weather permits. A great way to meet your neighbours is to throw a block party. On May 31st Esquimalt Parks and Recreation and VicPD will be co-hosting The Block Bash, a combined event to celebrate both Block Watch and Esquimalt Recreation’s Block Party Program. And speaking of parties, Buccaneer Days will be hosted June 13-15 this year with all of the fun, food and festivities we’ve come to expect from our premier summer event. Our parks continue to be a source of community pride thanks to the efforts of the Parks Department. Esquimalt Gorge Park and Memorial Park on Esquimalt Road have both had significant upgrades in the past several months. Westbay Park also now has a modern washroom and water fountain facility – a most welcome amenity! Find a bench in any one of our beautiful parks – Gorge, Saxe, Memorial, Highrock, Macaulay (to mention just a few) -- and experience nature and history that is uniquely Esquimalt. On behalf of Council I encourage you to explore our many parks and take advantage of the full array of recreation programs and events on offer this spring and summer season. Yours truly,

NEW! The Tensegrity Repair Series
NEW! Cancer Care presented by Lifemark
Health
Cancer C.A.R.E. - Client Centered, Active Rehabilitation and Empowerment - is now available in Victoria. Partnering with LifeMark Health Esquimalt, our Cancer C.A.R.E. group exercise program is for adults with a cancer diagnosis. Recent research has shown that cancer survivors can benefit from exercise both during and after treatment. Exercise is safe and very effective, when prescribed and monitored according to careful guidelines for cancer survivors. It has been proven to be the most effective treatment of cancer related fatigue, can help with pain, chemo ‘fog’, general deconditioning, and has also been shown to improve survival outcome. LifeMark Health Esquimalt staff have been trained to help meet the unique needs of cancer survivors and have the support of a national team of cancer rehabilitation and exercise specialists. Our goal is to empower each cancer survivor to take control of their life to feel better, stronger, and happier. Package includes a private assessment prior to start of the program with a Cancer Care trained kinesiologist and 12 admissions to the drop-in group sessions. You can join at any time following your initial assessment. Each class will include cardiovascular and strengthening intervals, as well as stretching. Developed by Gioia Irwin, this new class is performed in a series of movements - participants’ cycle through these movements to connect with the deepest layers of the body in an integral way. Participants can begin to feel the layers of the body sliding and moving with greater ease, while some of the long held restrictions around the joints, the muscles, or the facial layers are released. The ‘Tensegrity Repair Series’ is an opportunity to begin to ‘repair the damage’ we have done to ourselves, to reduce or reverse some of the wear and tear that we have subjected our bodies to over the years and is a fantastic way to tone deep core muscles while being kind to your body and mind. 43908 Tue Apr 15-Jun 3 12:00PM-1:00PM $80/8 43909 Tue Jun 10-Aug 5 12:00PM-1:00PM $80/8 Instructor: Marisela Martinez

The advent of the 100th anniversary of World War I is almost upon us. By the fall of 1914, thousands of young Canadians had taken up the call to arms. Over 400,000 Canadians would eventually serve overseas in what would be called “The War to End All Wars,” many of them from Esquimalt. The first Canadian troops to arrive in France were the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, formed at the outbreak of the war and a regiment with a close connection to Esquimalt. Work Point Barracks became a key training centre. Private Charles Durfee Harper, reported in 1917 that “Each man has a cot, straw mattress, pillow, two sheets and four blankets and a shelf over his cot and pegs for his uniforms. The building is of brick with lots of windows – light, snug and warm. Our room is heated by a coal stove and also has two open fire places. It is pretty cozy, in the evenings, to sit about the fire studying.” This would prove to be a far cry from the death and disease of the Western Front. The Archives has information on the men and women from Esquimalt who served in World War I. We are dedicated to preserving this and all aspects of our community’s heritage and you can help. If you have material that could help us tell this story, please let us know. Also, we are very interested in finding city directories from the 1950s and 1960s. Did you know, the Archives can help you research your family, your house, your neighbourhood and other interests?
