Mayor’s Message
On behalf of Council I encourage you to explore and take advantage of our parks and recreation facilities. And please watch for centennial event announcements in the coming months and come out and enjoy our once-in-a-lifetime celebration in 2012.
It’s hard to believe but our Centennial Year is upon us! Esquimalt has always been known for its special events, but this truly will be an eventful year. As our motto says, we will be honouring our past, celebrating our present, and imagining our future. Earlier in 2011 we honoured our past with the 50th birthday celebrations for Archie Browning Sports Centre. With the recent upgrades at the facility I am sure there will be many more such celebrations in the future. We’ll be celebrating our present in 2012 by hosting a number of active events throughout the year, starting with a New Year’s Eve Walk hosted by the Volkssport Walking Group. In March watch for the LifeMark Health Esquimalt 5k and the Nifty Fifty Curling Bonspiel, and in June plan to participate in the Mayor’s Centennial Golf Tournament. See the Special Events section of the guide on page 3 for a complete listing of community events, and also go to www.esquimaltcentennial2012.ca for additional event information. When I imagine our future, our outstanding parks system comes to mind as a legacy for future generations and a big part of what makes Esquimalt special. With the recent completion and dedication of Freeman Ken Hill Park, located at the corner of Grafton and Lyle, we have an excellent addition to our parks system and another wonderful spot to relax, recreate and enjoy the views. The park is also a perfect way to commemorate former mayor, councillor and energetic community volunteer Ken Hill. Congratulations to parks staff for their work in maintaining this new park and all of our community green spaces and stunning parks. Thanks also to recreation staff members for continuing to provide innovative programming for our customers and keeping the Township’s recreation facilities operating in a safe, friendly and efficient manner. On behalf of Council I encourage you to explore and take advantage of our parks and recreation facilities. And please watch for centennial event announcements in the coming months. Come out and enjoy our once-in-alifetime celebration in 2012. Yours truly,
Mayor Barb Desjardins.

Esquimalt was and still is home to a number of popular drinking establishments. The Ship Inn, the Globe Hotel and the Esquimalt Hotel (also known as the End House), all in the original village, were favourites with sailors – navy and merchant marine alike. The Halfway House on Esquimalt Road, at one time combined a brewery, saloon, bowling alley, restaurant and hotel under one roof. Some served other purposes, like the Tudor House as a home for soldiers and sailors and the now demolished Coach and Horses, as a home for the WRENS.
If you or a family member worked in one of our drinking establishments, we’d love to meet you. We’re always on the lookout for photographs, scrapbooks and newspaper clippings - in fact anything that you would like to share with others in the community. And the Archives can always help you research your house, your neighbourhood, your family and a myriad of other topics.
