With more than 5,000 kilometres of coastline and the highest number of blue flag beaches of any country in Europe (over 500), this article could have filled the entire magazine several times over. BEAUTIFUL BEACHES 24 / JULY 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE
Cala Macarella, Menorca
Cala Macarella is, quite simply, the most beautiful cove in Menorca. Picture postcard perfect, a stretch of inviting beach is sandwiched between towering limestone rocks topped with pines which frame the serene turquoise waters of the Mediterranean. Due to its diminutive size, it may be a bit busy in the summer, but is worth a visit nevertheless to experience the enveloping view it commands. Together with its little sister, Cala Macarelleta on the other side of the cliff, which is also appreciated as a nudist beach, it is one of those special locations in the world that everyone would like to visit. The restaurant bar Susy, in the shade of the pine forest backing the beach, provides food and refreshments for those in need of sustenance.

Playa De Bolonia, Tarifa
When you need a break from Marbella for a breath of fresh air, Tarifa is the place to head to. Here, the languid pace of life and the fresh wind blowing through the Straits will completely rejuvenate you. A popular destination for wind sports, the Punta de Tarifa is the southernmost point in Continental Europe. There are many things to do in this vicinity, but you should make sure to spend a day on Bolonia Beach. This revered swathe of white sand stretches the full length of a sweeping bay with stunning views across the Straits and to the Atlantic. The beach is located at the limit of the El Estrecho Natural Park, ensuring the preservation of the environment and its protection from urban development. A combination of unspoiled nature, fine golden sand and crystal clear water make it one of the most beautiful and wild beaches in Spain. At its western end is the gigantic dune it is famed for, over 30m high and 200m wide – don’t miss having fun here.

Platja De Ses Illetes, Formentera
Formentera’s most emblematic beach and declared one of the planet’s most beautiful beaches on more than one occasion, its name derives from the six islets which lie off this stretch of coast. The most outstanding feature of this beach is its calm, shallow, translucent water which, together with the fine white crystalline sand, create a paradisiacal landscape. The great extension of this beach permits visitors to find a space on the sand without overcrowding, especially in the northern area with the Trucadors peninsula, an arm of sand which connects with the neighbouring Levante beach. Being a natural park, its surroundings are protected, with preservation of the dunes and access walkways. An ideal beach for children due to its safety and amenities.
28 / JULY 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE
Maspalomas, Gran Canaria
Maspalomas Beach is in south Gran Canaria flanked by the Maspalomas Dunes Nature Reserve and Maspalomas Resort. With calm seas and three kilometres of golden sand, it is an ideal family holiday destination and the perfect place to spend days under the sun. A designated nature reserve, the dunes are immensely impressive, offering an opportunity
for that Sahara Desert type photo – indeed, wandering among them is a surreal experience. Blue-flagged Maspalomas is Gran Canaria’s biggest and most famous beach – it even has its own palm tree oasis and lagoon and is more akin to a miniature desert by the sea rather than a beach but, unlike a desert, there are convenient snack stands, comfy sun loungers and trained life guards.

Ses Salines, Ibiza
Named after the salt lakes in the south of Ibiza, which form a surrealistic landscape, the beach at Ses Salines (Las Salinas) is on the southernmost tip of the island and is considered ultra cool. Soft white sand, beautiful people and great beach bars combine to make this the hip location for those in the know. An extensive crescent of powdered sandy beach is bordered by pine woods and the shallow crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean. The bars play a selection of dance and balearic music which spills out onto the beach and they will often deliver cocktails and food orders to your spot on the sand. Any visit to Ibiza, a hedonistic paradise for the beautiful and the bold, is incomplete without passing a memorable day chilling at this iconic utopia.
30 / JULY 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE
Playa De La Barrosa, Chiclana
Recognised as one of the best beaches in Spain, the blue-flagged Playa de la Barrosa is located at Chiclana in the province of Huelva. Facing the Atlantic, this stunning six kilometres beach is straight and flat, meeting the water with no perceptible drop, meaning bathing for all the family in shallow translucent water. It is composed of fine white sand that is a joy to walk on and for beach games and sunbathing, and it has plenty of bars and restaurants as well as places where you can rent shady sun mattresses. There are some great hotels fronting this idyllic shoreline, making for the perfect holiday. La Barrosa is actually ’two beaches in one’: the well equipped principal beach and the more secluded so-called Torre del Puerto, in an area of prized ecological value.

Playa De Las Conchas, Lanzarote
When thinking of pristine sand, virgin landscapes, turquoise waters and stunning views, you may envisage the perfection of a Caribbean beach, but not necessarily so. Paradises like this exist in other locations too, such as at Playa de Las Conchas on the Island of La Graciosa. It is without question the most idyllic of all the beaches on the island, and if there is one beach you have to visit, this is it. Here, directly below the Montana Bermeja, you will encounter a breathtaking volcanic landscape that is simultaneously serene and extreme, with the contrasting colours of the azure waters, the white foam breakers, the golden sand, the volcanic black of the rocks, and the red of the mountain. The beach is a true natural paradise but take care with the strong tides. e

n the hotel business it all starts with a sense of arrival, and this is one of the many things that make Finca Cortesin stand out. Follow the road uphill from the coast towards Casares and the country club style resort appears on the right-hand side with all the bearing of a landed estate. This impression continues as you enter the beautifully kept domain that is Finca Cortesin, passing through a guarded entrance beyond which everything – from the buildings and the landscaping to such details as the roads and lighting – is spotless. By the time you step inside this already iconic hotel you will be thoroughly convinced that it is located within a historic palace estate, but no, incredible as it may seem, for all that Finca Cortesin exudes an air of timeless style and refinement, this is a relatively modern resort designed for purpose – and now it is back, better than ever! › WWW.ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM / 35

UPGRADING AN ICON
Even before Covid turned the world upside down, the resort had begun work on a series of upgrades. Improving upon a successful icon of a hotel is never an easy task, but under the expert guidance of General Manager René Zimmer, who has been instrumental in developing Finca Cortesin into what it is today, the process began towards the end of 2019. The closure that hit the entire hospitality sector globally slowed down the work, but in true fashion the planned stages of renewal had been completed when the hotel reopened for business last summer. “In spite of all the handicaps that last year presented, we succeeded in maintaining our usual annual occupation levels,” says the General Manager who has turned this resort with the country estate feel into an international destination in its own right. › 36 / JULY 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

The two studios flow out onto a private garden for outdoor classes in Hatha Yoga, ‘Slow Flow’ and ‘Power’ Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Yin Yoga and Kundalini are offered by expert teachers. What’s more, there are also programs for children from six years and up. The interior and exterior spaces have also undergone beautification, and El Jardín de Lutz – one of the iconic fine dining

The same is true of Kabuki Raw, a dining venue that really is a singular experience. It is this element of ‘Tailored Opulence’ that the Ritz Carlton Hotel Chain is all set to introduce in the
world of cruising – avant-garde design and onboard entertainment that is poised to take cruising to an altogether different level. How about embarking on customised voyages on custom-built yachts? This is exactly what is on offer – seven to ten night itineraries that will offer exceptionally designed visitor experiences both onboard and ashore. All suites of the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection will be soundproof and feature all the luxurious offerings which guests of Ritz-Carlton hotels on land are familiar with – king sized bed, double vanity bathroom, luxury linens for instance. Apart from the legendary services for which the Ritz-Carlton brand is so renowned, the yachts will also redefine the cruise industry crewguest ratio with one crew member assigned for every discerning guest. When it comes to fine dining, the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection will offer a bewildering array of world cuisine onboard. The Talaat Nam restaurant, for instance, will serve authentic South East Asian cuisine with an exclusive Sushi bar as an additional add-on, whereas the S.E.A. will serve European cuisine with an à la carte menu. Mistral will be the venue for the seafood bar and if insider information is anything to go by, Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection will offer the day’s freshest catches. The Bar, I am told, will recreate an intimate lounge experience, with cocktails and Champagnes that will come with caviar pairings. Carefully curated itineraries will cater to the distinctive segments – sightseeing of iconic 50 / JULY 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE
landmarks, immersive cultural experiences, activity oriented programmes and authentic gastronomic/culinary journeys. Cruise experts have been hinting at the prospect of itineraries that might have a tie-up with Ritz-Carlton hotels. Consider for instance the Canada & New England segment. In the autumn months, much of Canada’s east coast offers a temperate climate, which is just ideal for cruising and exploring the cultural diversity, sightseeing and adventurous jaunts for visitors. Ritz-Carlton Yacht’s Canada cruises will go that extra mile to integrate selected destinations of the United States and even Iceland for an unparalleled cruise experience.
The Ritz-Carlton luxury cruises are targeted at wealthy global travellers, and fares range from $3,100 to $10,100, which isn’t surprising given the opulence and sophistication on offer. For instance, the 7 nights Canada cruise – Halifax, Nova Scotia/Boston, Massachusetts is priced at USD $6,537, plus USD $337 per pax. All fares are on a double occupancy per person basis. Bear in mind that all reservations require you to pay the full amount 120 days prior to your departure date. When it comes to inoculation, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection is pretty strict and inoculation requirements vary from country to country. A signed and globally acceptable Vaccination Certificate is mandatory and failure to comply with the strict inoculation standards might even result in cancellation of your reservation. ›

These days, the trend for cruising with family is growing phenomenally and often there are children accompanying. To reach out to the young ones, the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection has come up with an exclusive Ritz-Kids programme aimed at encouraging children to explore the world together with Mum and Dad. The Ritz-Kids is educative and in the holiday season the programmes will be funfilled and exciting with lots of thrills. What about the dress code? Although there is no strict dress code onboard, it is expected that guests do not dress outlandishly. During the daytime one can wear casuals while in the evening T-shirts and bathing robes are a strict No!No! You should be extra careful when stepping inside the ship’s signature restaurant Aqua where the dress code is elegant and wearing collared shirts and evening dresses would be the best option. In the cruise industry the mood is upbeat which is well reflected in the words of the CEO for The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection,

WHAT ARE CORAL REEFS?
g yin
illed by global war al k mi r o ng c
Considered the rainforests of the sea, coral reefs have beautiful colours ranging from brown to blue. Reefs can vary in size, shape and colour. Although they may look like rocks, corals are alive. Coral polyps are the animals that form reef colonies, and each polyp has a stomach with a mouth surrounded by tentacles that can capture food. Hard corals form the reefs that attract tourists to destinations like the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. They make calcium carbonate skeletons for protection and have a mutualistic relationship with the photosynthetic algae zooxanthellae. The algae receive a safe space to live while the corals get food, oxygen and waste removal. In addition, zooxanthellae give corals their colour. If you see a white or bleached coral, then it lacks zooxanthellae. ›

HOW CORAL GARDENING IS
SAVING REEFS Coral reefs are dying in alarming numbers around the world. Reefs are a crucial part of marine ecosystems and provide food, shelter and breeding grounds for many species. According to The Independent, about half of all the reefs have already died, and 90 per cent may disappear by 2050. While researchers are scrambling to save the remaining reefs, coral gardening has become a popular preservation method. WORDS LANA BANDOIM

WHY DO CORAL REEFS MATTER?
Coral reefs provide homes for 25 per cent or 2 million of all the ocean species in the world. Fish and other animals rely on the reefs for protection, shelter, food and breeding grounds. Reefs also protect shorelines and prevent erosion. For example, Florida’s barrier reefs can reduce the impact of waves or storms while stopping the land from wearing away. In addition, corals help filter the water, so it remains clear.
56 / JULY 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE
According to the Smithsonian, coral reefs have a global value of at least $30 billion because of the resources they provide to people. In the United States, the NOAA Office for Coastal Management estimates that coral reefs have a value of $3.4 billion per year due to tourism, fisheries and shoreline protection while preventing $94 million in flood damage. Around the globe, 500 million people depend on reefs for income, protection or food. ›

WHAT ARE THE THREATS TO CORAL REEFS? Although there are natural dangers like disease and storms, people are the biggest threats to coral reef survival. Pollution, overfishing, too much tourism and other problems are destroying reefs around the world. Other important issues are warming ocean temperatures and ocean acidification linked to climate change. Coral bleaching, which is when reefs turn white, can happen because of rising ocean temperatures. Pollution, runoff, low tides and too much sunlight can also contribute to bleaching. The coral polyps expel the zooxanthellae that give them their colour because they’re under stress and start to starve. If the problems persist, the corals can die.
WHAT IS CORAL GARDENING?
Coral gardening is a method of growing coral polyps to help restore reefs around the globe. Sometimes called coral farming, this gardening method involves taking small coral fragments and growing them through asexual
58 / JULY 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE
reproduction until they are mature. The two main types of gardening practices are oceanbased nurseries and land-based nurseries. Ocean-based nurseries take coral fragments and grow them underwater. They attach the pieces to steel structures and monitor them.
The fragments may need to grow for six to 12 months to reach maturity in the nurseries. Once they’re ready, the researchers can transfer the colonies of new polyps to existing damaged reefs, so they can continue to grow. On the other hand, land-based nurseries take coral fragments and grow them in laboratories or farms. Growing corals on land allows for faster processes such as microfragmenting. Since most corals grow about an inch per year, faster growing practices are important for the restoration of the reefs. In addition, land-based nurseries aren’t exposed to the oceans’ changing temperatures, predators, storms, accidents or other problems that can interfere with the gardening process. Once the corals are mature, they can still be transferred to the reefs underwater for replanting.

HOW YOU CAN HELP
back to CONTENTS
You can’t start a coral garden in your swimming pool, but there are other things you can do to help preserve coral reefs globally. First, do not buy, sell or harvest any corals. From souvenirs to jewellery, you can find corals in many stores. By not purchasing coral pieces, you can limit the demand for them. If you travel to a location that has coral reefs, be a responsible tourist. Don’t go diving or swimming in restricted or protected areas. Avoid touching or doing any type of damage to existing coral reefs. Don’t stand or sit on any part of the reefs. In addition, you can help by cleaning up your trash and not littering on beaches. What you do on land can also affect coral reefs negatively or positively. Corals need clean water without sedimentation or runoff to survive. You can help by reducing your use of fertilisers or other chemicals that can end up in the water. g Lana Bandoim is a Tech and Science writer, with a double major in Chemistry and Biology from Butler University.

DOES CORAL GARDENING WORK?
The Miami Herald reports that one of the biggest benefits of coral gardening is the ability of researchers to influence the reefs and make them more resilient. For example, the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science and the Frost Museum of Science are working together to make super corals. Engineered reefs can be more diverse and resistant to problems like climate change or rising ocean temperatures. Researchers can deliberately select coral fragments from reefs that appear to withstand stress better. A study from the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science found that coral gardening is working. Scientists learned that taking small fragments doesn’t cause serious damage. More importantly, replanting coral colonies grown in nurseries helps save reefs, and the transferred coral acts like wild colonies.

THE MANY BENEFITS OF
AUCTIONS Auctioning luxury real estate is the most normal thing in the world in the United States. Even within Europe, this efficient and comfortable way of selling is now being embraced by buyers and sellers within the highest segment of the international housing market. Hans Veenhuijsen represents the American auction house Concierge Auctions with his company HiddeJames. He explains why the auctioning of highvalue real estate is taking such a flight.

In their view, the possibilities offered by an ordinary real estate agency fall short. They don't want to have to wait months or more for sales and be on display in a store window that whole time. Concierge Auctions guarantees sales within six weeks at a price that

Usually there is already so much interest there that we can confidently guarantee that sales will not take longer than six weeks.’ ›

You have to have deep pockets to belong in this exquisite company. If only because you are expected to deposit €100,000 before you can even participate in an auction at all. Veenhuijsen: ‘We do this as a precaution. It's a vote of confidence. If the sale does not go through, that deposit will be refunded immediately.’ Veenhuijsen says that sixty per cent of buyers have so much confidence in the information provided that they would buy a house without visiting it on location. Like the client from New York who bought a villa in Marbella last year for €11 million without having visited the house. ‘It says something about
68 / JULY 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

the relationship of trust we have with our clients.’
REALISTIC During our conversation, Veenhuijsen is informed that an impressive villa in Mallorca has just been sold for €5.1 million, including 12% commission payable by the buyer. ‘The seller's broker initially asked for €5.95 million, but brokers always aim high’, says Veenhuijsen. ‘During the run-up to the auction, we were able to determine the value of the property by reactions from brokers and buyers at around €3.5 million, so in consultation with the seller, we set the lower limit at €3.75 million. Eventually
there were four bidders and it was awarded to an American millionaire for net €4.6 million, excluding commission. An auction is ultimately the fairest and most efficient selling method, because the actual value is determined by the market. So the price we realise for an object is always realistic, but not always what the seller hopes for. There is a danger when a property enters the market at a high price and remains unsold for a long time. Nobody knows where that leads and how far you have to drop to sell it. That takes time, creates a lot of uncertainty and you lose control of the sales process. We start with the minimum amount
that the seller wants to receive and then go up from there. The entire sales process takes no longer than six weeks. Our clients experience our approach as very pleasant and confidence inspiring.’ He has another telling example, this time in Gstaad. ‘This chalet was for sale for €14 million for four years, with no result at all. The seller wanted to finalise it and gave a minimum sales price of €7.9 million. We sold it for €9.5 million within a few weeks.’
SHORT SELLING TIME The properties offered at Concierge Auctions are not your run-of-the-mill
homes. The house with the highest yield ever at auction is located on the seafront in Hillsboro Beach, Florida and had an original asking price of €159 million. The owner was very satisfied with the auction result and the working method of Concierge Auctions: ‘I chose Concierge Auctions because they have an incredible network of potential buyers. And I am no less impressed by the way they work, their attention to detail and their business acumen. In my opinion, it is the best sales organisation in the world for luxury, unique residences at the absolute top of the market’.

Hans Veenhuijsen emphasises that Concierge Auctions, and therefore his European agency Hidde-James, uniquely combines the advantages of the traditional brokerage profession with all the advantages of an auction: the competition, a realistic yield and the guaranteed short selling time. The original American Concierge Auctions was founded in 2008 and operates worldwide with agents in 29 countries. The average yield of a house is approximately €4 million and most houses are sold in the price category of €2.5 to €40 million. So far, approximately €8 trillion in bids have been submitted via the digital auction site, which is also active 24 hours a day.

SUCCESS NEVER TASTED SO SWEET EXPAND YOUR MIND AND YOUR ASSETS
74 / JULY 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE
Scotch whisky is a symbol of British craftsmanship and tradition, of durability and reliability. And though it hasn’t been around for ever, it has been recognised throughout history. Its documented story begins in 1494, and tax records of the day show that a friar acquired eight bolls – about 2,500lbs – of malted barley, “wherewith to make aqua vitae”. Although distillation processes may have changed over time, the value of this commodity has been driven by demand and maturation. As global appreciation of whisky has flourished, people are gradually discovering that limited edition and maturing casks from the most globally renowned distilleries could bring in top returns for those willing to hold their investment.
WHY WHISKY AND WHY NOW? The global landscape of investments has changed dramatically in recent years, with the general public now having a greater ability to take trading into their own hands and invest and trade in a range of commodities through online platforms and investment advisors. Technology has led the way in a virtual environment to allow people to discover new and interesting
markets which have previously not been explored. This being said, 2020 has also demonstrated the global volatility of stock markets and poor returns on extremely low interest rates, driving them to discover ways to diversify their asset portfolios. A way of mitigating the risk of investments is to purchase luxury commodities which appreciate in price over the years. It has become increasingly common for people › WWW.ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM / 75

to invest in classic cars, coins, watches and artwork while other commodities have not been considered as viable investment opportunities. However, it is now becoming more apparent than ever that assets which have previously been considered as merely consumer goods, have great potential for long term investors. One such luxury commodity is whisky, which has previously been washed away for our own satisfaction, and is now showing great potential as an investment asset. Additionally, whisky is a tax-free asset which other traditional financial

assets fail to offer investors. Firstly, like fine wine, demand outstrips supply. Whisky which is collectible is also in demand for consumers, so a substantial proportion of any limited edition bottling will swiftly become much more limited as much of it is consumed by dedicated whisky lovers. Whisky is bottled after a period of maturation in oak barrels. Legally, this is a minimum of 3 years, but in practice, most whiskies are matured for a minimum of 8 years in order for them to develop their character.

In the last year, there was an extraordinary increase of between 15-20% on rare whisky bottle values, ensuring that it outperformed the established alternative asset investments such as watches, art and cars. In the last couple of years, we have witnessed some incredible whisky sales, including the following: An individual bottle of Macallan 1926 broke records at auction, selling for £1.5 million. In 2018, over £40.7m of rare whisky was sold at auction houses in the UK alone. A cask of Macallan distilled in 1989 sold for $572,000 last year – a record price for a maturing cask of whisky. The Whisky Cask Index, a study generated by Cask 88, Braeburn Whisky and WhiskyStats.net, has shown steady growth across the previous year, as well as the rate at which casks appreciate annually being on the rise. This appreciating rate can be attributed to the positive impact of both the maturity of the whisky, as well as a response to the increasing demand as whisky supply is sold into a more diverse range of global markets.
78 / JULY 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE
Distilleries will usually have a ‘house style’ represented by a mass-produced bottling of a relatively young malt (such as Glenmorangie’s popular 10 year old). But they will also have older whiskies maturing at the distillery, and they can also bottle older whiskies such as a 15 or 21 year old. They might also bottle the product of a particular cask of vintage whisky, or they might offer different expressions of the whisky such as a ‘port wood finish’ or ‘sherry wood finish’ which means that, in addition to being aged in traditional Bourbon barrels, the whisky has been ‘finished’ with a period of additional ageing in a port or sherry barrel which can impart different flavours. These different expressions of the whisky and older malts are the ones that are of interest to investors – production is limited, they are highly prized by collectors and consumers alike. Whiskies from some distilleries are much more collectible than others, so it is important to do due diligence on what will be desirable in the marketplace in a few years’ time when you seek to sell your whiskies on. As with any investment, it is crucial to make sure you’re in the best hands and have access to the best platforms in order for your investment to flourish. It is therefore imperative that investors have access to well-known distilleries which already have a reputation for investable whisky. This includes famous Scottish whiskies such as Macallan, Dalmore and Springbank. The collectability and rarity of whiskies is extremely important when considering investing in whisky and hence choosing the right distillery, and the age of cask or bottle is essential when investing.
COMPARISON WITH OTHER INVESTMENTS Comparisons are made between the whisky cask market and other luxury commodities; however there are many features of whisky which make it unique. It is therefore challenging to analyse the market without considering variable factors, such as the characteristics of the cask that make it one of a kind. The complexity is also enhanced by the fact that, unlike a piece of art, or a collectible bottle of already-bottled whisky, the value of casks is not only dependent on demand, but also the maturation of the cask. Therefore a cask purchased
this year will effectively become a new product as the years pass. The Whisky Cask Index demonstrates the projected values of a sample of twenty casks from a variety of distilleries across the globe with varying age profiles. It is worth noting that, despite the global pandemic which impacted the economy during early 2020, the Whisky Cask Index has remained optimistic, and even shown growth. In this data analysis, not a single distillery index showed negative returns over the past 5 years, which is a confirmation that the market is relatively robust to negative impacts on the global economy.

It is extremely positive that no single Scottish distillery demonstrated a

negative index in capital growth. Projections ranged from a predicted annual capital growth of 5.13% for the small Scottish distillery, Ardmore, to larger scale popular distilleries such as Laphroaig and Macallan, which both show projected returns approaching 20% per annum. The top distillery by predicted annual growth is Laphroaig, in which demand is continually outstripping supply. The following two distilleries in the league table are both located on Islay, with both
Bunnahabhain and Staoisha showcasing the popularity of this region. In terms of distillery territories, it is worth noting that whisky produced on Scottish islands dominate the top ten in the capital growth league table with only Macallan, Springbank and BenRiach representing mainland distilleries in this comparative list.
2021 TRENDS As the whisky industry grows and expands into new and established markets, it has been predicted that demand will align with this growth which
will therefore require supply to also increase. With increased worldwide demand for whisky, the value of whisky in casks will only increase, in particular more aged whisky, along with the value of whisky produced in 2020 and 2021 during the global pandemic due to the closures of distilleries which meant that there was reduced production. It is therefore no surprise that name brand whiskies distilled in 2020 or 2021 will see an acceleration in growth due to the lack of availability over this time frame
and increased demand making it highly investible whisky. Recent data collated this year has been reflective of the trends which have been witnessed in the whisky market over the past few years, with extremely reassuring outcomes. This is particularly noticeable in the fact that the aforementioned whisky index did not record any negative returns throughout the period of the study. The projected annual capital growth across the distilleries is expected to continue throughout 2021.
If growth continues at a comparable rate, the data suggests that investments made into casks from one of the top ten distilleries, which Elite Wine & Whisky has access to, could double in value over the next five years. As pressure mounts from governments and eco-conscious NGOs for big industries to start making more concrete plans for a sustainable future, it’s perhaps automotive manufacturers who have been held accountable for the most immediate action. A pencilled-in date of 2030 will see a rather dramatic change to car sales, with most European countries slated to ban the sale of any new domestic-use vehicles bearing internal combustion engines by that evernearing deadline, with the excused caveat of some hybrid powertrains. While many automakers have promised some token efforts in the way of going green, Jaguar has truly put its money where its mouth is, with plans for an exclusively electric line-up from 2025. Dua Lipa’s ability to be so many things all in one go is what, ultimately, makes her so engaging. Consider the fact the 25-year-old is a London-born descendant of Kosovan Albanian parents who, with Bosnian ancestry thrown into the mix, fled the war-torn former Yugoslavia in search of better, fairer, more fulfilling and, essentially, safer lives.

he is a woman in a relationship with a multimillionaire partner, Anwar Hadid, yet is in every way a self-starting, self-made exemplar of blistering talent and unrelenting energy. She is someone entrenched in a world of manufactured bubble gum pop, yet a versatile activist and campaigner who will happily turn away Radio 1, Capital, MTV and commercial avenues if the opportunity arises to liaise with political media on subjects as diverse as social justice,
equality and human rights. And of course, as you may well expect, the chart-topping artist is a powerhouse behind sexual equality, and the freedom to play out our dreams and ambitions on a level playing field. What we love Dua Lipa for mostly though is for the gloss, glamour and shine she has put on the music industry; and that dynamism was rewarded, unequivocally, by her double BRIT win this year. The singer/songwriter picked up the gongs for Best Album and Best Female Artist, excelling where so many other artists have been left bereft of ideas and creativity through lockdown.
“
This year she released a remix of Future Nostalgia, the album that garnered so much praise, though with the exception of a couple of scattered singles, her continued impact on music, activism and entertainment has largely been led by personality, poise and no small quantity of sumptuous selfies. Dua Lipa is a face for the next phase of music – and one that won’t go away anytime soon given the expected release of her third album in the early part of next year. She is a talent whose voice is more than just soundscapes that emerge from the microphone; and of course, with that platform comes responsibility… but somehow we feel the singer is up to the task.

EM: Whether it’s feminism, the situation regarding refugees, LGBT, HIV or poverty, you pride yourself on having an opinion, right? DUA: I think we all have opinions and we’re all entitled to express them, and that’s what I’m doing. I like to stay informed but I’m not for one second supposing people are going to agree with everything I say… I know that’s not the deal. In fact, often I have to be careful to hold myself back from moving too far away from what people really like in me and regard me as, and that is a singer. It is something I think about a lot, and I don’t want to spoil that. However, given where I have come from and what I have lived through, I do believe it would be strange if I didn’t offer some opinion on what’s

going on around us. And these are really key issues too – real things that I genuinely have a passion for and care about. EM: Do you think the music industry, as a whole, speaks up enough when it comes to social issues? DUA: I think a lot of artists are afraid to raise their heads up for fear of saying or doing the wrong thing. In the past I have been told to steer clear of being too outspoken. My label are obviously supportive of what I do and say, but I know there is always that danger of someone disagreeing. I accept we don’t live in a world where all the entertainment is taken out of things because everything has to have a deeper message… that would become really boring.
People need escapism. What’s more, if you push a subject too far then that whole impact can be taken away, so I think that’s the balancing act with all musicians, whether they’re being interviewed about politics, music or just what they’re wearing – you can have too much of anything, or anyone! EM: And yet what’s refreshing about you is you’re not afraid to enter into a debate. DUA: I think, ultimately, If you’re going to say something that people might oppose, at least do it in a way that shows you are credible, and you can think for yourself. That’s why I went so far into the Brexit thing – because I could really see it from both sides. After what happened in
Yugoslavia, I would be a hypocrite if I said I didn’t believe in the will of the people and the ability of people to make change and forge their own path. Yet my stronger perception is that I am so lucky that I was able to make the move to the UK from Kosovo. It seems likely that in future there won’t be many who can do what I did. That’s such a sad state of affairs, but these things happen, and I don’t believe anything is forever. It made me sad then and it still does, but I understand, as a nation, the people felt they had tried it for long enough and wanted to explore the potential of a new way of doing things.” EM: Your pathway to the top that you reference was certainly an example of having to put in the hard yards, right? music, I am always working hard to release material as quickly as I can, but things don’t always work that way – the promotion, interviews, release schedules. I got that tattoo there in a place that I can always look at, to remind myself that the phrase is true: ‘patience is a virtue…’ Sometimes, you have to wait for good things to happen. I learned that from my father – he always wanted to achieve as much as he could, though he knew there would be things out of his control that he couldn’t influence; and sometimes patience is the only way. His release was music, from the frustrations of life. I don’t have those same frustrations, but I certainly enjoy having the same release, and music is fundamentally important and a huge, dominant part of who I am. from as early as I can remember, music was something I loved being involved in… both making it and listening to it. There couldn’t be anything else, really because music has been my life since I was very young. I don’t think I ever had a day where I didn’t listen to music – it’s always been there at some point, and I’m sure it always will be. EM: Including a busy year ahead… DUA: Sure, they are all busy. FRAMING BRITNEY SPEARS (Hulu, FXNow)
» Director: Samantha Stark Framing Britney Spears follows the singer’s career, her rise to fame, and personal struggles throughout her three decades in show business. Starting in The Mickey Mouse Club in 1992 when she was just 11, alongside Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera, she became the ‘Princess of Pop’ but was also sexualised and vilified in the media and public opinion. Following a highly publicised breakdown, she continues to be under the legal control of her father, Jamie Spears, since 2008. The film is deeply empathetic and has resulted in a vast number of celebrities voicing support for Spears, with the phrase “We are sorry” trending on Twitter, and a public apology from Timberlake.

The lengthy timing is not surprising really, considering he was given total access to the singer’s life, providing him with more than 1,200 hours of footage, and due to the fact that, allegedly, each time the film neared completion, Rihanna would embark on a new venture. At the time of writing, a trailer had not yet been released but the documentary is widely expected to be available on Amazon soon. e

It is difficult to tell who is more excited by the prospect of playing live – the bands that had to put their tours on hold or the audiences looking to let their hair down after lockdown! The concerts might not have happened, but the industry leaders were busy during lockdown, planning and preparing for the forthcoming season. Rock Lounge, part of the Entertainment Brands Group, is bringing Disco icons Sister Sledge to the Marbella Arena on July 30 for what promises to be an unforgettable event. With a 30-year track record of iconic events around the World, Rock Lounge CEO David Giles is optimistic for the future

I’ve been attending and organising live events all my life, and I know that the demand will definitely come back because people want it. While Rock Lounge has brought stars such as Seal, Simply Red, The Jacksons, George Benson, Van Morrison, Blondie, Michael Bolton and Kool and the Gang to the coast, Entertainment Brands also promotes Soulfrito – which will be held in New York later this year – and Latino 100. THE CLEMO AND THE MONETE COFFEE TABLES
SITTING IN STYLE Clemo and Monete are two new coffee tables designed by Massimo Castagna. Clemo takes its name from Ceppo di Gre’, which is an exclusive natural stone found on the slopes of Mount Clemo, by the northwestern shore of Lake Iseo. Monete, meanwhile, is a rather unique looking table consisting of naturally spotted, burnished metal circles wedged together. To complement the look, Castagna also presents a variant of the arched, best seller Audrey sofa in an XS version.

CRYOTHERAPY
Exposing yourself to -120ºC might seem like an odd path to health, but the cold therapy trend is growing and with new research emerging, it claims more and more legitimate benefits for a number of medical conditions. ot likely to happen in Marbella, but if you have walked the streets in a snow storm before with the cold wind hitting your face, you will not find the cryotherapy sensation unfamiliar. for another day? Cold therapy involves suddenly lowering the body temperature to near freezing conditions to induce a series of biochemical responses that affect bodily functions for the better. It increases blood circulation, stimulates the lymphatic system and collagen production, reduces inflammation, nerve irritation, arthritic and muscle pain
among others. It is also said to strengthen immunity and speed up recuperation from injuries, so regular sessions for athletes are becoming increasingly popular.
TYPES OF CRYOTHERAPY Cryotherapy can be applied either to the full body or locally, to treat specific conditions. The Cryosauna is a specially designed pod where the body
can be exposed from -110ºC to -160ªC cold over one to three minutes, monitored by a qualified technician. There are also a number of ways Cryotherapy can be administered locally. One study found that applying it to the neck area can reduce migraine pain significantly and it proves effective for numbing torments such as pinched nerves or even acute injuries. Cryofast also offers Cryo Facial, which involves ultra cold dry air streamed over the face in a sequence that resembles a massage, leaving you rested and de-stressed. It is not only the most pleasant therapy I’ve tried but the most visibly rewarding one with my skin becoming
smooth and firm after just one session. Reducing lines and stimulating collagen production, it’s a refreshing and detoxifying treatment overall.
MY FULL BODY CRYOTHERAPY EXPERIENCE I removed my clothes and entered the plush cushioned chamber of the Cryosauna. For the full effect, you only have to spend three minutes and you will even lose up to 800 calories! I was given comfy boots and gloves to protect my extremities and the platform was adjusted to height so my head was excluded. The extreme cold entered as a dry mist that felt quite refreshing to start with. The temperature
lowered gradually, and I easily braved the 3rd minute, which they say only improves with each treatment as your system adjusts to the experience. When I stepped out, my body was measuring 14º C. A hot tea and biscuits were offered and gladly accepted. In a few minutes everything returned to normal and later that day I noticed that all my aches and pains of the long hours in front of the computer were gone. Having been the first time, my body was riding through the aftermath of it for days, with the need of taking in lots of extra water and sleep, a sign of what I would describe as the most powerful detox process I’ve ever experienced. ›

back to CONTENTS Have you ever experienced that you suddenly have a ‘clogged feeling’ in your ear? Sometimes the ‘clog’ comes by itself or after a common cold, other times when driving up a hill or when your airplane is landing. This plugged feeling can be slightly painful or reduce your hearing, and sometimes you also hear a high or a low pitched sound (tinnitus). WORDS DR. BEATE ABRAHAM-NILSEN
DO YOU HAVE A FEELING OF PRESSURE IN
YOUR EAR? T
his plugged sensation in the ear is what we call Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD), and it normally goes away rapidly, but the problem arises when it doesn’t, and it remains with you for weeks, months or even years.
blocked or fails to open properly due to inflammation or obstruction. This plugged feeling occurs as air cannot get into the middle ear and the air pressure becomes unequal. As a result the middle ear becomes destabilised and if left untreated, in more severe cases, can cause permanent hearing damage.
WHAT IS THE EUSTACHIAN TUBE DYSFUNCTION (ETD)?
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF THE ETD AND WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
It is a condition affecting up to 5 per cent of the adult population. It occurs when the Eustachian tube becomes
Before we explain the causes that can lead to ETD, you need to know some basics about the ear. The ear consists
168 / JULY 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE
of three parts; the outer, middle and the inner ear. The outer ear conducts the sound and when the sound vibrates the eardrum, this again sends vibrations to three small bones in the middle ear (malleus, incus and stapes). These three bones form a bridge from the tympanic membrane to the oval window. The sound then arrives to the inner ear. The Eustachian tubes are small tubes that run between your middle ears and the upper throat. They are responsible for equalising ear pressure and draining fluid from the middle ear. Among
problems that cause blockage to these tubes, we can include obstructions in the the throat, enlarged adenoids or tumours, inflammation and mucus due to allergies, hormones or upper air way infection, or a blockage in the middle ear such as middle ear infection or a local infection as a cholesteatoma. The symptoms normally include a plugged feeling in the ears. Sometimes the ears feel like they are filled with water. Others are: tinnitus, vertigo, pain, reduced hearing and clicking or popping sounds in your ear. The symptoms sometimes become worse with altitude changes.
ARE THERE ANY HOME REMEDIES TO START WITH BEFORE I GO TO THE DOCTOR? As a general advice, no matter the etiology of the blockage, yawning and chewing gum may help to equilibrate the air pressure. You might also use a saline nasal spray to help clean your passageways.
HOW CAN I GET THIS FIXED? If the plugged sensation does not disappear by itself, you might want to go to an Otorhinolaryngologist (ENT doctor). The doctor will ask you several questions such as how long have you had the problem? Allergies? Snoring? Pain? Reduced hearing? Tinnitus? Pregnant? Medications? Stress? The doctor will then examine your ears; this is to check that there is no earwax or infection in the outer ear
conduct. If the outer ear is normal, the doctor will evaluate your eardrum and its position, look for liquid or other abnormalities in the middle ear. The doctor might ask you to close your mouth, hold your nose, and gently blow as if you are blowing your nose, this is called the Valsalva maneuver, and is used to see if the eardrum is moving. They will also conduct a further painless test to measure the function of the middle ear, called Tympanometry. The doctor will then explore your nose and throat to make sure there are no blockages, and if present will explore allergies via a prick-test for nuemoallergens.
Some hospitals also preform Eustachian tube balloon dilatation where the surgeon inflates a small balloon into the Eustachian tube through the nose. The inflated balloon clears a passageway for mucus and air. This treatment is used when the inflammation of the Eustachian tube is extensive and when other treatments are not helping. e
CAN ETD BE TREATED AND WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU DON’T TREAT IT? First you have to detect the cause. The patient is often prescribed with anti-histamines and anti-inflammatory medication, especially after a common cold or known allergies. If an allergy is identified and the problem is recurrent, you might consider allergy vaccination. Severe infections are treated with antibiotics and topical treatments, and if there is a blockage in the upper throat, this can be surgically removed. In cases of severe ETD, this condition can cause middle ear infection, otitis media with effusion (also called glue ear) and eardrum retraction. This might require the surgical placement of tubes in the eardrum (grommets), which allows pressure to equalise in the middle ear.

HOW TO GET ENERGISED TO BE...
THE BEST YOU
Everyone wants to be the best version of themselves – yet we live in a whirlwind world that all too often seems to take our energy. So we don’t do many of the things we know we need to do. Thankfully, there are several simple things that anyone can do to get extraordinarily energised. WORDS DAVID HURST
W
hen somebody comes to see me – whether that’s to beat anxiety, depression, get a boost to achieve something new or because of a life change such as a relationship break-up, I frequently start with suggesting some proven

successful methods. There are others as well – but here are definitely some of the most effective energisers.
Z GET UP EARLIER It might not make sense to start the day 30 minutes sooner, especially if you’re lacking energy. But it is
extremely beneficial to do this – so that you don’t rush into each day. Starting calmly, with meditation is best. Breathe slowly, relax and be mindful of things such as your breathing or the view. Don’t run through all those things that need to be done that day either. These will only steal positive energy. Z KEEP IT IN THE DAY In fact, keeping it in the present moment is the most energising way of all to live. Having regrets about the past or worries for the future only steals positive energy for the present. Nobody can change the past or predict the future. So living in the past or the future will often create negative feelings. These feelings will cause more negative thoughts and put you in a vicious circle. Instead, keep it in the day you’re in right now.
Z THINK POSITIVE As stoic philosopher Marcus Aurelius said: “The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts.” This can sound too simple, especially to someone suffering from anxiety or depression. But the fact is everyone has a choice over which thoughts to focus on out of the 4,000 or so we have every waking hour. Make sure to ignore the negative ones and listen to the positive. Writing a gratitude list is a fantastic way to get positive. This is writing
several things for which you’re grateful – such as your friends and the sunshine. Saying positive affirmations helps many people too. These are words such as: “I have many strengths” and “I can.” Write a daily gratitude list and say positive affirmations even – or perhaps especially – if you don’t feel like it. Another energy booster is to ensure you’re around people who are positive. Choose people who are for you.
Z BE KIND TO YOURSELF This means eating plenty of fresh fruit and veg. Don’t rush meals or eat too much as digesting will take up energy – and being greedy is never emotionally good for us. Make sure to exercise most days. On seeing and feeling the benefits, it will increase self-esteem and boost energy. If you’re drinking too much or taking mood-altering drugs, consider that you may need to cut down or stop. If it proves difficult or seemingly impossible to cut down, you probably need to stop. Consider if you’re working too many hours. If you are, you really need to find ways to work less. Ensure to sleep serenely too. Going to bed at a regular time will help. If you still have trouble sleeping, seek professional help.
Likewise with cutting down or quitting anything.
Z DO WHAT INSPIRES YOU Be generous with time, money, qualities and talents. When you give, you gain – because giving always leaves people feeling positive inside. This boosts energy. Never be scared of using talents either – after all, you’ve been given them for good reason. Many people don’t use a talent though because they’re too influenced by cultural and family expectations. This is why so many people climb the ladder of success, but always know deep down that it’s up against the wrong wall. If we’re doing something that inspires us, we’ll always have great energy. Then we can live the life we truly want – and be who we really can be. g David Hurst is a Wellbeing Coach with four books published on emotional and mental health recovery, including 12 Steps To 1 Hero and The Anxiety Conversation. THE COSTA DEL SOL PROPERTY MARKET
AFTER COVID
To say that the period since the onset of the Covid pandemic in March 2020 has been a strange and challenging one is an understatement. Now, as the world opens up once more and we slowly return to our normal routines, we assess the state of the Costa del Sol property market in discussion with some of its leading experts. s we reclaim the freedoms we once took for granted – one of them being freedom of movement – people once more return to the streets, shops, businesses, restaurants and other establishments that form the fabric of our society and backbone of our economy. If no more unexpected setbacks are suffered, we will be on the path back to recovering what has been lost, but what have we learned along the way, what perspectives have we gained, and how is the market operating right now and expected to be performing in the months and years to come? How have things been since the end of lockdown? “I think we’ve all seen how the gradual opening up has given the Costa del Sol a boost, but even so it would have been hard to predict the response from the buying public,” says Smadar Kahana, owner of five Engel & Völkers shops in the greater Marbella area. “Currently, sales figures have rapidly risen to a level we haven’t seen in the almost twenty years that we have been active in this market. The demand is clearly top-down, with
the main emphasis on the mid to high end segments, and focused primarily on luxury modern villas and apartments/ penthouses in top locations. It really is quite astounding, and appears to be a combination of pent-up demand and a decision to seize the day and push for quality of life and enjoyment following the Covid lockdown experience.” Has Covid changed the way business is done? “Modern technological developments in the fields of communication, drone video and also virtual viewing tours derived from gaming technology have been gathering pace over the past decade,” says Stacy Welch of Solvilla, “but their adoption on a mass scale was slow and gradual until Covid hit. The need to adapt quickly and embrace these tools in an everyday environment has pushed our industry and many others ahead by eight to ten years. Even though you will never replace personal service or visiting a property and location in person, the new methods of working and communicating are here to stay and will only continue to develop further.” › WWW.ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM / 175

Anssi and Sirena Kiviranta of Strand Properties
How did the Covid situation affect the property sector on the Costa del Sol? “It can’t be denied that it was a great challenge,” says Anssi Kiviranta of Strand Properties. “The biggest problem was certainly not a lack of interest and enquiries, but the severe restrictions on international travel, which greatly limited the number of people coming here to view and ultimately buy properties. That said, those in the higher income spheres, especially people with access to private jets, could and did come, and this is one of the reasons why the top end of the market has been so dominant over the past year.”

Michael J. Liggan, Director of Altavista
Are buyers looking for anything different than before? “Yes,” says Michael Liggan of Altavista. “But subtly so. They still want stylish modern properties with attractive lifestyle amenities, open-plan interiors and a good location, but more important than ever are also space, green zones, proximity to amenities as well as
nature, and areas that can be used as office space.” As a specialist commercialising agent and developer with particular expertise in contemporary villas, Altavista is incorporating these elements into its designs. “We satisfy an important mid-high segment and in recent years this has become a specialisation in villas, many of which have exactly the kind of features people are looking for right now. We have seen that they will compromise a little on some of the things on their wish list, as well as on location, but given the urgency many of them feel right now towards acquiring a property in Marbella, one of the key factors is finding a home that suites them, especially since the stock of ready, new-build modern villas is running low.” ›

And how will prices develop? “If things continue as now there may be pressure for them to grow too much, and this wouldn’t be good for the market in the longer term,” says Smadar (Engel & Völkers). “Another important thing to keep in mind is the fact that the strongest demand is and for some time has been for newly built properties in Marbella, not for existing re-sales, with the exception of redeveloped/highly renovated properties. This means that re-sale properties cannot track the prices of new homes, and that owners have to price their properties sensibly in order to find buyers. Such pricing should always take into account the cost, effort and time that goes into renovation.”

www.altavistaproperty.com
www.strandproperties.com
www.engelvoelkers.com/marbella
Are most still buying holiday homes? “The majority of our clients continue to be second-home buyers,” says Anssi Kiviranta (Strand Properties), “but the proportion of people looking to relocate permanently and base themselves in Marbella is greater than ever and continues to grow. As part of this trend, the average age has also continued to drop further and many of our clients are now young families in their forties who are not retired but clearly working independently and remotely. They feel the Costa del Sol is an excellent, safe base with a clear focus on quality of life, an expanding offer of co-working centres and good connections with the rest of the world. The growing focus on fulltime living in Marbella is also having its effect on property design, resulting in larger interior spaces, the importance of features such as storage, workspaces, sizable bedroom suites and also the demand for manageable but spacious gardens.”
How do you see the market evolving in the near future? “We foresee continued and in some cases accelerated growth for the remainder of this year and next – the so-called recovery period – but this of course supposes there will be no more lockdowns and travel restrictions will continue to ease as we begin to leave the Covid experience behind us,” says Stacy (Solvilla). Thereafter the market will find a new equilibrium, but we expect it to be at a healthy level of sales.” What will be the final impact of Covid for the Costa del Sol real estate market? “Firstly, a release of pent-up and lifestyle-driven demand,” says Michael (Altavista), “but in the long term it will further emphasise the quality of life this region offers and have pushed the property sector into the future with regard to modern technologies and methods of work. Beyond this, I believe we will return to many of the factors that dominated the market before Covid, and of course some things – such as quality of location, property and service – will never change.” e WWW.ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM / 179

T
hough not an ‘old’ company, Solvilla is already established as a leading name in the Marbella property market. More than this, the focus is clear as this is a specialist operation that dedicates itself to modern villas in the most desirable locations of Marbella. In fact, the main real estate offering of Solvilla is situated within a carefully selected collection of prime residential areas that satisfy the tough criteria set by a firm in touch with its clients’ wants and needs. “As a company, we have always been keenly aware of what our clientele looks
for in a Marbella property,” says Torgeir Wemmestad-Haaland, who founded the company and instilled it with a distinct operating philosophy in the wake of the world financial crisis. “Then, as now, conditions were not exactly perfect, but as now there was a strong inherent demand for the way of life – the space, nature, views, leisure amenities and sociable lifestyle – that this part of the world offers. By not just selling properties to buyers but tailoring our offering to what they truly wish for, we built a name for ourselves and gradually became specialists within our niche segment.” ›

MODERN VILLAS The first group of buyers who immediately felt associated with this philosophy were his fellow Norwegians, followed by other Scandinavians and now a truly broad international and also Spanish client base. “We never wanted to become an exclusively Scandinavian agency, but naturally this is our core market, and much of the real estate that we have since developed or promoted is modelled in the first instance on contemporary Scandinavian design and lifestyle concepts.” In this way, Solvilla has contributed to the design revolution that has transformed Marbella homes in recent years. In so doing, it has also become an expert in modern

villas, focusing above all on sleek architectural design, flowing open-plan interiors, outdoor lifestyle features and that uniquely Scandinavian blend of cool minimalism and homely hygge, a word whose English translation (cosiness) does not really do it full justice. “Very important is the fact that we took inspiration from all these cues, but always with our Mediterranean setting and Andalusian cultural environment in mind,” says Sales Director, Stacy Welch. It is this blend of Nordic and Marbella elements that is shaping and now also redefining 21st century villas in this area, along with modern technology and conveniences.
A MIDAS TOUCH Everything Solvilla has touched appears to have been a success, with its mostly small boutique villa developments finding a ready market among an increasingly international buying public. “I think that our effectiveness both as developers in combination with investors and as a commercialising agent for quality third party developers is thanks to two key points, the first being the fact that we are always listening to our clients’ feedback and evolving and improving the properties we represent, and the second being the way in which product development and sales/ marketing presentation are matched.”
The heart of the Golf Valley
In other words, the commercialising approach matches the careful consideration and tasteful style that also goes into designing Solvilla’s own projects, or in advising developer clients. “But,” adds Stacy, “it is also about being discerning, and we decided long ago that Solvilla should not be a company that offers ‘everything, everywhere’, but rather a purveyor of quality in the best locations Marbella has to offer.” For this reason the company specialises in areas such as Sierra Blanca, La Quinta, Puente Romano and Nueva Andalucía, where the latest new boutique project, Brisas 1 is currently being launched.
AN EVOLVING OFFER The two Las Brisas villas with imposing golf and La Concha Mountain views that make up this small development reflect the way in which Solvilla does indeed evolve its real estate offering. “We hold true to certain standards and concepts of development,” says Torgeir, “but within this we challenge ourselves to keep up with the latest trends and demands of our buying public. This means an evolving interpretation of styling, materials, finishes, décor, landscaping, use of light and space, and also distribution of lifestyle amenities such as panoramic infinity edge pools, sun decks, outdoor sitting
areas with fire pits, entertainment and games rooms, and much more." “Ultimately, our business and our ability to successfully fulfil our clients’ wish lists come down not so much to selling as it does to getting it right and creating the best possible properties available for sale in Marbella. If anything, our capacity to do so is our calling card and the thing we are most proud of.” g SOLVILLA Tel: (+34) 952 765 060. info@solvilla.es, www.solvilla.es

THE TERROIR Located in a micro-valley crossed by the river Arga, in Navarra’s Ribera Alta district, some 275 Ha are under vine with soils composed of sand and silt, which are well drained and contribute finesse and elegance to the resulting wines. The grapes are cultured at an altitude between 300 and 480m, permitting the preferred varieties of Sauvignon Blanc, Garnacha, Graciano, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot to be grown under optimal conditions.

vineyard where their ancestors grew vines a century ago, the current production process is ultra-modern with a spacious bodega housing state-of-the-art equipment and a capacity to hold over 4 million litres of wine. Visitors can arrange to tour the installation and particularly impressive is the cask room, housing 3,000 barrels of French and American oak.
THE MISSION From the outset, the aim has been to produce and market exemplary red, white and rosé wines which exhibit character and personality. These have garnered them widespread recognition and appreciation
throughout Europe, America and Asia. To achieve and maintain this, utmost care is taken with the land, the harvesting, and throughout the entire production process, and Bodega Inurrieta only employs grapes grown in their own vineyards.
THE WINES The full range encompasses 13 distinct wines, comprising seven reds, four whites and two rosés. These are, correspondingly, the Inurrietas Norte, Sur, Cuatrocientos, Puro Vicio, Altos de Inurrieta, Laderas de Inurrieta and Mimao Tinto, the Inuriettas Intacta, Orchídea, Orchídea Cuvée, and Mimao Blanco, and Inurietta Coral and Mediodía.
REWARDING RECOGNITION
SUMMER RECOMMENDATIONS
Bodega Inurrieta has been a regular entrant at the annual Challenge International Du Vin held in France, considered the most rigorous, impartial and esteemed wine competition in the world and it is a consistent winner, achieving multiple Gold and Silver medals during recent years, with three Golds and one Silver in 2021. They also hold the distinction of being the only Spanish bodega to be regaled with five gold medals at this year’s prestigious Mundus Vini competition in Germany.
Consequently, with this level of pedigree, it behoves all lovers of wine to seek out and taste some of these award-winning products. We suggest starting with their Orchidea, which has achieved Gold medals at both of the above competitions and the Coral which has a Gold from the Challenge International Du Vin and a Silver from the Mundus Vini.
