THE RETURN OF

CRUISING

The return of cruising was met, in the UK at least, with an avalanche of headlines and euphoria that you’d expect from the Second Coming. All of which must have made it a very good May day for MSC Cruises, whose Virtuosa sailed out of Southampton for a fourday jaunt over to France – without stopping – and a quick port call on the south coast for a very British afternoon tea. For those who like to linger at sea it was all a bit disappointing, but an important point was being made – the cruise market was back in business. It also provided a taste of what to expect as Europeans prepare to board an armada of cruise ships from the Baltic to the Med. WORDS DAVID WISHART PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF THE FEATURED CRUISELINES

MSC’S VIRTUOSA The brand new Virtuosa, capacity 6,300, did not hold back on social distancing with just 1,000 on board, meaning crew outnumbered passengers. And although it did not insist on two vaccinations, as many other cruise lines are now doing, a negative Covid test was required just to enter the terminal.

Once on board, all passengers were given what looks like a Fitbit watch but is a contact tracker, which in an outbreak can help find other infected persons. However, at that point MSC had been cruising the Med since August with 50,000 passengers and there had been no outbreaks on board. Same

26 / AUGUST 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

for Sea Dream Yacht Club during its Norwegian coastal cruises. On Virtuosa, meanwhile, passengers had face masks delivered to their cabins every day and were expected to wear them in public spaces, which they did. Mind you these passengers were presumably very conscious of their relatively novel experience; it could be different with 6,300 on board. Even so, Virtuosa is a big ship and it should be easy to avoid

Virtuosa - MSC

crowded situations. Buffets, for example, should not see passengers ducking in and out of lines, and loading their plates, as they now have to line-up, receive a plate and napkin, then walk the buffet line pointing to their choices to staff behind glass-fronted displays. Virtuosa has 10 restaurants including the well received new FrenchVietnamese Indochine and Mexican style Hola! Tacos, both of which charge extra, and 21

bars. There is also a Yacht Club, a premium section separated from the main ship, which has more refined cabins, deck and pool areas, and a private restaurant and bar. Passengers here can visit the rest of the ship, rather like liners of old where first class passengers would often slip down to second class for a more relaxed evening of dancing and socialising. At press time 15 cruise lines

have said they have restarted cruising or are about to, and three ships have reported onboard infections. One is Virtuosa sister ship MSC Seaside, which disembarked two passengers in Sicily. Royal Caribbean is another, where a handful of crew of its new Odyssey of the Seas were found to be infected, and Celebrity Millennium, with two passengers on a cruise out of Aruba isolating. › WWW.ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM / 27

NEW REGULATIONS In the US, in an effort to meet the demands of the Centres for Disease Control (CDC), cruise lines are being creative in dealing with the question of vaccinations. While many lines have already announced Covid vaccination requirements fleetwide, that strategy may not work for all operators. What is starting to evolve is that some lines, particularly those that cater to families, are going down a route where some ships and itineraries will carry a passenger vaccine requirement – and some will not. This follows the CDC conditions for resumption of service requiring 95 per cent of passengers and 98 per cent of the crew to be vaccinated to bypass a lengthier test cruise process. But some lines, particularly those that carry more children, are not able to meet that threshold.

28 / AUGUST 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

Silver Moon - Silversea

To get ships back in the water faster – without alienating key demographics – some lines are choosing to do both. Carnival Cruise Line has already said it will not mandate vaccines across its entire fleet, yet it recently announced sailings from Seattle to Alaska aboard Carnival Miracle will require all passengers and crew to provide proof of vaccination before sailing. Alaska typically attracts an older demographic to begin with, and it is thought that mandatory vaccinations for all crew and passengers are a condition for these ships being allowed to sail from Seattle. By the way, these cruises have traditionally sailed from Vancouver, but Canada has shut its ports for the time

being. This is a much more attractive place to sail from, and visit nearby Whistler and Vancouver Island, so I would recommend saving your Alaska cruise until Vancouver is back in business. Meanwhile Norwegian Cruise Line has sailed into a controversy by banning all unvaccinated passengers, including those under the age of 12, on sailings through October 31. However this runs counter to a new law introduced by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, making it illegal to deny boarding to passengers who have not been vaccinated. This is a huge problem for the cruise industry as several of its biggest ports, including Miami and Ft Lauderdale, are in Florida. ›

PASSENGER INFORMATION

One thing is certain – with no unified front across the cruise industry in terms of vaccine requirements, the onus will be on cruisers to determine whether their cruise of choice mandates vaccinations or not, and whether those requirements are ship or destinationspecific. Then there are shore excursions, no small matter for most passengers, who

30 / AUGUST 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

should check itineraries to make sure they are not sailing into ports where infections are risky. Some cruise lines say their passengers will only be allowed to go ashore in a “verified” official party, but imagine being in the Greek islands and not being able to stroll along waterfronts looking for a good taverna? Particularly when there will be other tourists who have arrived by ferry or air and

can go where they want without being on a leash. All of the issues here, with rules being changed all the time, make it essential to book and keep in close touch with a specialised cruise travel agent such as Mundy in London. It won’t cost you any more, and you will have the benefit of the latest combined knowledge of a very experienced team. Mundy Cruising (+44) 207 399 767. ›

One thing not to overlook in the great dash to get to sea again is an attractive flotilla of new ships, some ready to sail for the first time more than a year ago, and now heading for waterfronts to pick up their first passengers.

HELLO SAILOR!

Z One of the most striking is Scarlet Lady, the first of three newbuilds ordered by Richard Branson’s Virgin Voyages. This will be cruising with a difference, with no children under 18, no main restaurant but 20 eating places without extra charges, so called RockStar suites, unlimited fitness classes and local entertainment in its inaugural season of short cruises from Portsmouth (British passengers only) starting in August. Z Passengers will be known as Sailors, and they will have to be vaccinated. Z Capacity is 2,800, but numbers will likely be much reduced to meet Covid requirements. Fares for three nights start at £1,251 per cabin (for two Sailors) and include tips, all meals, soft drinks and WiFi. There are no port calls on these first cruises. › WWW.ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM / 33

SEA CLOUD SPIRIT

Z The company with the legendary Sea Cloud and sister ship Sea Cloud 2 admits that building a threemast full-rigged ship in the 21st century might seem a little unusual, but puts this down to a true passion for sailing. Z Sea Cloud Spirit, built in Spain for 136 passengers, also comes with new standards such as an entire deck of balcony cabins, a wellness and fitness area, and two restaurants. Expect plenty of brass fittings as well. Z First cruise will be 10 days from Rome in September, rates starting at €6.775 per person.

34 / AUGUST 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

WINDSTAR REBORN

Z The three motorised vessels (as opposed to the line’s sailing vessels) have been stretched to increase capacity from 212 to 312 passengers and they promise to be just as charming as before but with added suites, restaurants, bars, balconies/ verandas, more deck space, bigger pool and spa. Z These vessels were built for Seabourn Cruise Line with no expense spared – the Rolls-Royces of their day, with one central passageway opening into spacious cabins and elegant bathrooms. Windstar has continued the pursuit of quality

and just like Sea Dream Yacht Club, the vessels feel contemporary, spacious and luxurious in an understated manner. Z Most of the 88 balconies/verandas will be Romeo and Juliets, which are attractive as when the seaside door is opened it brings in the outside very effectively. Z Star Breeze is already sailing in the Caribbean, Star Legend starts in Northern Europe September 4 and Star Pride in the Caribbean in November. Z Star Legend offers 12 days with a London departure in September from $5,999. ›

Z Saga Cruises of UK, which caters to the over-50 crowd, has two newbuilds, the second of which, Spirit of Adventure, departed on her inaugural cruise in July. She has 554 all-balcony cabins including 109 single balcony cabins – surely a first! Z All passengers are required to have both Covid-19 vaccines at least 14-days ahead of departure, but getting to ports from within the UK is free, including shared chauffeur service, as is car parking near the port, domestic flights, rail or

GOLDEN HORIZON

Z The romance of sail continues with a fivemast barque rigged tall ship built in Croatia, originally called Flying Clipper on order from Star Clippers, but due to a dispute with the yard the vessel ended up with Tradewind Voyages and was renamed Golden Horizon. Z The design was based on France 11, a French windjammer built in 1911. The new vessel is the largest sailing ship ever built, but will carry just 330 passengers. Z There are three pools, five bars and a twodeck restaurant, plus a watersports marina. Z Worldwide itineraries had planned to start

up with voyages around Britain this summer, but at press time these had been postponed because of Covid restrictions. ›

SILVER MOON

Z Readers may recall our review of Silversea’s Silver Muse on an inaugural voyage to Canada, and the 600-passenger Silver Moon is quite similar, but with subtle changes. This is a line that listens to passengers’ comments. Z The spa, for example, has been enlarged, and some of the eight restaurants have been moved, with S.A.L.T (Sea and Land Taste) culinary enrichment programme introduced. Others include Atlantide (European cuisine and seafood), Kaiseki (sushi by day, hibachi by night), Silver Note (tapas in a jazz club setting), the Grill (alfresco grilled meat and seafood) and the well-known La Dame. Z Suites come in one and two-bedroom layouts and all have balconies and butlers. Z Silver Moon is currently cruising in the Med with a 10-day cruise out of Athens starting at €5.800, including flights.

REFREDS

Z Fred Olsen Cruise Lines has replaced old timers Black Watch and Boudicca with two handsome vessels from Holland America Line, the Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Z Renamed Bolette and Borealis, both have 690 cabins, and will be the largest in the fleet of four vessels. Z Each has six restaurants and 11 bars, most of which are likely to have a good selection of draught beers popular with the largely British clientele. Z Borealis made her first voyage in July while Bolette sails August 24 roundtrip from Dover around UK. Fares start at £899. e

Necker Island used to be a little known destination until Richard Branson stumbled across this speck of paradise way back in the 1970s. To put it succinctly in his own words: “I had no idea where they were located or that they were actually called the British Virgin Islands,” the billionaire entrepreneur writes in a blog about purchasing Necker Island. “But one Thursday in 1978, I was told that they existed and that I could potentially own one.”

ichard Branson, known the world over as a billionaire business tycoon with an outlandish lifestyle, gave his very best to grab this little speck of paradise. So, when the realtor invited him to come on a visit to Necker Island, Branson arrived in quick time to meet the agent who demanded a whooping $6 million, which was way beyond Branson’s reach then. As the negotiations went on, Branson offered $100,000 – that was the highest he could afford, which sounded like utter nonsense to the realtor and needless to say, Branson was on his way back home to the UK. However, as fate would have it, one year later, the owner of Necker Island

still couldn’t find the right buyer and was anxious to sell his holding in quick time. Branson recollects those pre-buying moments thus: “Virgin Records was in a much better position than it had been a year before, so I quickly agreed to a purchase price of $180,000.” Gone are those murky days of negotiations, debates and parleys. Today, Richard Branson is one of the world’s most talked about billionaire tycoons and his secluded island retreat is now the world’s most exclusive hideaway for celebs and business moguls. ›

Necker Island offers not just sea, surf and sand. It provides a sleek peek into the mysterious luxury and opulence of the rich and the famous when they are in holiday mood. From Nelson Mandela to Princess Diana, Necker Island has played host to some of the most glamorous people on the planet. The moment you touchdown on this island paradise, the feeling that you are in a fortunate place is most predominant. A bewildering array of wildlife proliferates! The in-house wildlife squad – experts with years of hands-on wildlife experience have meticulously incubated a one-of-its-kind Flamingo Breeding programme which is self explanatory – 54 new baby chicks and 28 parent Flamingos that thrive in the congenial flamingo-friendly environ specially created by the wildlife wardens. So, today when you arrive at this Shangri-la, you are likely to be greeted with the sight of mother flamingos sitting on eggs and waiting with bated breath for the birth of new denizens of Necker Island.

Richard Branson’s commitment for wildlife conservation is legendary and his passion for protecting endangered wildlife species like the Madagascar lemur is well known. So, don’t be taken aback at the sight of baby lemurs, all recent additions to Necker Island. Apart from them, other resident species include stout iguanas, parrots, macaws, cockatoos, geckos and what have you! For many visitors, the ethereal sight of a compact team of ibis airborne and flying like angels over the island is forever etched in their memory. First time visitors are

curious to know what the weather conditions are like in this part of the world! And why not? Spending mega bucks for holidaying doesn’t come easy! Well, Necker Island is blessed with highs of around 28°C in January to highs of tentatively 35°C in July. So, it is pretty balmy all year round! Branson’s utopia is a proud member of ‘Pack for a Purpose’, (a nonprofit organisation) that offers visitors a chance to contribute in kind towards the local community. It goes without saying that when you put aside some space in your baggage for carrying essential

provisions for school children or even medicines that aren’t easily available on Necker Island, you are indeed making a huge impact in the lives of the local community. Necker Island prides itself for successfully running The Robinson O’Neal Memorial Primary School. once interviewed legendary Small Faces drummer Kenney Jones, and he told me what it was like to get the phone call from Pete Townshend to replace Keith Moon in The Who. “Kenney, we’re putting the band back together,” Pete said. “And you’re the only one who can take it.” Being ‘able to take it’ succinctly sums up what any aspect of being involved in concert production is like. Having worked in media for over 30 years, I am more than used to late nights, stress inducing situations,

rampant egos, and the simmering undercurrent of being part of a team that could erupt in sudden violence at any moment (not so much during my stint at Reader’s Digest Group, but I digress.) Working backstage with an ‘Access All Areas’ pass hanging around your neck, however, takes it to a whole new level. When asked to describe the build up to a major concert, my eyes tend to get the thousand yard stare of those who have seen too much, too young. Usually it’s a crazy combination

of chaos theory and crisis management at all times. When you throw in too little sleep and far too many energy drinks, you begin to understand why it is a job for the insane. Which is why I am perfectly suited to it. The entire list of, ahem, ‘challenging’ situations, that I have encountered would probably take up the rest of this month’s magazine, so I have picked out a few ‘highlights’ that, after the passage of the years and a few therapy sessions, are now much funnier than they were at the time. ›

Joaquín Cortés at the Puerto Banús Bullring was my first large scale production. The modern flamenco dance sensation was at the height of his considerable powers, and the event was a sell-out. The only problem was that the bullring had lain derelict for years, so it took a frantic ten days before the performance to remove rubble, prepare the changing rooms and VIP areas and practically call a napalm strike on the toilets to have the venue fit for service. While we were running around, Diego, who lived with his family at a house at the back of the Bullring, oversaw the work from the bar of the bullfighting clubhouse. The customary blur of rigging stages, sound and

74 / AUGUST 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

lighting checks and liaising with Cortes’ team meant that we didn’t really give Diego another thought. That was until, standing backstage thirty minutes before Joaquín was due on, I looked behind me and saw Diego and a group of around twenty friends sitting on deckchairs with cool boxes, eagerly awaiting the performance. He took considerable Andalusian umbrage when I explained that he was not allowed to run a ‘side hustle’, allowing his mates the closest seats in the venue – ‘gente’ or ‘no gente’. That was the least of our problems once the performance got underway, however. A few days before, ETA had let off a small explosive device on

a nearby beach. No one was injured, but the Guardia Civil were understandably twitchy. I was standing at the sound desk when I looked up and congratulated the head of Guardia for having men on the roof. His faced drained of colour as he told me that he didn’t have men on the roof… The President of an African nation was a VVIP at the event and had brought his own armed security team with him. Unfortunately, he had failed to inform the Guardia that they were taking up positions overlooking the crowd. A rather tense stand off then followed as we raced to the rooftops and told the snipers to get down, sharpish.

The only highpoint came when the President’s limo parked in front of an emergency exit. We called the grua, who seemed more than happy to tow the Mercedes away. He attached the crane and, with a screech of grinding metal, pulled the back off his truck. The limo was, of course, heavily armoured and weighed several tonnes. Looking after the VIP guests at Simply Red in Palma should have been a breeze. So much of a breeze, in fact, that I did not bother with packing my traditional backstage outfit of black T shirt, jeans and spare lanyard (the thing you put round your neck and clip your AAA pass to. Promotors are always running out of them). Arriving at my hotel on the afternoon of the concert, dressed in the black suit and shirt that I would wear that evening, I grabbed a shower, ordered up a late lunch from room service and then casually called my friend Nina, who was running production at the venue. ›

time we were finished, my shirt was soaked. So much so that, with no time to dry clean it, I merely ran a hose over it and let it drip dry. Then there was Mick Hucknall. Actually, I shouldn’t really say Mick Hucknall, because we weren’t allowed to call him Mick. He was ‘Mr. Hucknall’, and he came with his people, whose main aim in life was to keep the annoying production crew away from him. We were not to look at Mr. Hucknall. We were not to strike up a conversation with Mr. Hucknall. If Mr. Hucknall asked us a direct question, such as ‘What’s for lunch?’, we would have to reply to his people ‘Could you

tell Mr. Hucknall that there is a range of salads, pasta dishes and a fish or meat option’. Under no circumstances were we to answer him directly. This was demonstrated when, walking in a line behind Mr. Hucknall, his people and Nina, the Simply Red star asked what time he was due on stage. Fatigued, frazzled and completely forgetting the ‘Do not answer Mr. Hucknall’ rule, Nina piped up, “You’re on in about two hours… aaaaaaaaaaarggggh”. One of the people had pushed poor Nina through the open doorway that we were passing for daring to break the rule. I had to be restrained from finding out if there was a ‘No punching Mr. Hucknall rule’. ›

Due to the layout of the Puente Romano Tennis Club, Press Accreditation and VIP Ticket collection take place on tables by the entrance. I have run the Press for concerts for several years and you always get the odd chancer, turning up on the night with a Press Card from 1973 and saying that he wants to cover the event for Paris Match or some sort. Having politely but firmly said that

sorry, the Press list closed 24 hours earlier, I had enough time to people watch, always entertaining at concerts. › One person who caught my attention was a lady in her late 60s who seemed to be wearing a baby blue onesie. She was also on crutches and, as it was another hot day, I asked her if she wanted to borrow a chair to sit down. She thanked me in a profuse but slightly rambling way and started to explain that she had to give a rose to Michael. I smiled and said I would see what I could do, thinking that she probably didn’t even have a ticket. With five minutes before Michael Bolton was due on, I headed inside to look after the photographers’ pit. If you don’t know, that is the strip between the stage and the first row of seats. The general rule is that Press photographers are allowed to get their shots during the first two numbers – before the star gets too sweaty and their makeup starts to run – and then my job is to escort them back to the Press area. I had just herded the photographers away and was having a last look along the pit. Michael Bolton came to

the front of the stage to play a slow acoustic number, when suddenly I heard a frenzied cry of “MICHAEL!!!” and I spun on my heels. What I saw next will haunt me for life. It was the woman in the onesie, making a beeline, at speed on crutches towards the West Coast Warbler, clutching a rose and with the look of the fanatic on her face. There was only one thing between her and the object of her affections. Me. “Madam, please” I tried to reason as she bore down on me, with no apparent decrease in speed. I stepped in front of her to block her and received a hefty clump with a crutch for my troubles. She careered into me, still yelling “Michael!!!!” and I attempted to stop her by grabbing her. I’m not sure what bit of the onesie was in my hand but I got a another crutch to the side of the head for that one. Michael Bolton looked down with a raised eyebrow. “Security!” I gasped, “Help!” Now the thing with Security is that you have to handle them correctly. It is a thankless task and they have been known to

employ just short of lethal force on occasion. One drunken female stage invader at a Joe Cocker concert in Banús was taken out in a pincer movement of such speed and force that I think she landed in Cabopino. “Get her to the side,” I hissed, as she flailed away with the crutches like something from the Battle of Helm’s Deep, “but gently.” Once we had sat the woman down at the side of the stage, we went through her bags. I never go through a woman’s handbag, and this one was a prime example. There was such detritus that I was half expecting to find a severed head. But there, at the bottom of her bag, was her VIP ticket, as

well as her membership of the Official Finnish Michael Bolton Fan Club. I told the security guard to stand next to her and make sure that she did not make another break for it. Limping back to the production desk, I could see Fran ‘the Man’ Ramírez, my brilliant buddy who I have worked with on more concerts than I can remember grinning from ear to ear. “Backstage at Bolton, brother” he laughed. “How come, every year we say that we are never going to do another concert again? And then we do another concert again?” e

2021 FERRARI ROMA To many admirers, the Ferrari Roma is a modern day equivalent of the legendary Daytona that was built between 1968 and 1973. Configured in the classic 2+2 front, engine/rear drive fashion, a well-restored Daytona can now cost a great deal of money, even by today’s inflated auction records. An example once owned by pop megastar Sir Elton John was on the block recently and was expected to easily top the half million-euro mark. T

he current Ferrari Roma is the perfect way to experience a modern Daytona without breaking the bank. It even looks like a Daytona with its long bonnet, stubby tail and 2+2 seating. Of course, given modern performance and safety technology, it’s a far better car in every respect, but don’t tell that to the Ferrari faithful! According to Ferrari, the car does indeed echo a bygone automotive era and departs from the styling themes of most current Ferrari road cars. It was introduced under the slogan La Nuova Dolce Vita to signify this design approach. Knowledgeable enthusiasts could easily point to several Ferraris of the past from which inspiration for the Roma was gleaned. While it could theoretically take four passengers, rear seat occupants had better be either very young or very tolerant. Few 2+2 designs by any maker offer more than a place to throw a coat or a soft piece of luggage. ›

The svelte bodywork of the Roma is fairly conventional as far as fabrication goes and as with its other models, Ferrari sticks with aluminium rather than more exotic materials. The Roma bodywork is thus fairly light and accident damage is simple to repair. Carbon fibre is used here and there, but not extensively. A three-position rear wing activates at 100 km/h and positions itself to provide maximum downforce for optimal stability. To bring the car’s raw power under control, Ferrari uses carbonceramic vented disc brakes. To justify its ‘grand touring’ role, the Roma offers 345-litres of cargo space with the rear seats folded flat. The Roma’s not-inconsiderable power comes

94 / AUGUST 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

from a 3.9-litre twin-turbo V-8 developing 620-horsepower. It’s mated to an 8-speed dualclutch automatic with manual override. Ferrari’s design team created a suspension to handle a wide variety of road conditions. Regardless of the car’s front-engine layout, it’s very well balanced and for most drivers, it’ll feel as nimble as one of Ferrari’s mid-engine models. The cockpit is expectedly a great place to enjoy and every detail is taken care of with minute precision and excellent good taste. It is an alldigital layout, which some Ferrari fans won’t like, but it is superbly functional. Interestingly, the passenger gets a touch screen with which to tackle navigation and other infotainment tasks.

Few carmakers recognise that it’s the front seat passenger who often looks after programming the Satnav. The owner will need to spend a little time with the operator’s manual to figure out the rather complex instrumentation, but that’s a chore that’s part of the joy of Ferrari ownership. Despite the breathtaking looks of other Ferrari products, the Roma remains a sports car of outstanding engineering innovation cleverly combined with traditional styling. This is a restrained and elegant expression of Ferrari design work with few equals and brings back memories of another styling masterpiece that no maker ever successfully imitated – the E-Type Jaguar. >

RYAN REYNOLDS

DEAD GOOD 98 / AUGUST 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

For 25 years, Ryan Reynolds has been following his Hollywood dream. He was just 18 when he loaded up his truck – actually it was a beat-up Jeep – and secretly drove from Vancouver to Los Angeles to take a shot at becoming an actor. He was so afraid that his parents – particularly his father, a former boxer and policeman – would find out that he would call his folks from a payphone while pretending to be staying with his brother in Vancouver.

B

ut Ryan’s Hollywood gamble paid off, even if by his own standards, it needed Marvel’s flawed hero Deadpool to transport the actor out of a career lull that almost finished him off. The Canadian heartthrob had to work hard to shake up his image after a string of movies that relied heavily on the handsome leading-man aura, that saw him go through the motions in far too many rom-coms (The Change Up, The Proposal, and Definitely, Maybe). Then there was his lamentable turn in the disastrous Green Lantern, in 2011. On the road to recovery a few years on, the likes of Mississippi Grind, The Captive and Safe House showed that he could deliver hard-edged performances if given the opportunity, but Deadpool truly tipped the scale – and when

Deadpool 2 made three quarters of a billion dollars at the box office in 2018, the Canadian, a lifelong devotee of glib sarcasm, combined this winning dry wit with devastating good looks to cement his reputation as one of Hollywood’s hottest leading men. As night follows day, so too do Hollywood producers know when the time is right for another money-spinning instalment of the all-action hero. Deadpool 3 was announced in the same flurry of so many other big box office projects as the industry looks to emerge out of its period of enforced dormancy with the same bluster and bravado that disfigured mercenary Wade Winston Wilson approaches his next challenge. The rumours are of a filming start date of spring 2022 with Reynolds, Josh Brolin and James McAvoy confirmed so far.

At least, in downtime, Reynolds has been able to fill his time with other projects. There’s his time with actress wife Blake Lively – the couple reside in glamorous Bedford, New York, with their three daughters, James, six, Ines, four, and Betty, one. Indeed, he credits his children as the inspiration for him returning to voiceover work in the sequel to The Croods, the animated adventure released in 2013 at what was, in truth, a fallow period of his career. Elsewhere, in one of the more peculiar Hollywood investments of recent times, he and fellow actor Rob McElhenney completed a takeover of fifth tier side Wrexham in November. The Welsh club fell short in their bid to make a return to the Football League, though having two wealthy and connected owners will definitely see them tipped for title honours next season. ›

EM: So, the Croods are back in what is rapidly becoming a new age for us all. As a father again, has parenthood changed the way you think about life in general? Does it influence your movie choices? REYNOLDS: It definitely has. After the success of the first Croods there was immediately talk of doing it again, so I guess in that respect it’s not much of a surprise for people to see it happening, but since that first movie I’ve discovered fatherhood and it’s true to say your interpretation of everything changes. You’re much more aware of your responsibility to the world around you. You’re thinking less about yourself and more about your family and what makes them happy. Your happiness is connected to the enjoyment you have being part of their lives. In terms of movie choices, the joy you imagine a child will take from your movie actually becomes real, because you can see it there in front of you, and of course that is special. Q: And with something like this it doesn’t require a bunch of people in a film studio together? REYNOLDS: Sure, it’s a very different way of making movies. Obviously the real work is with the guys in animation. By the time it comes to putting the

voices over the top we are way down the line, but it’s interesting seeing all this come together in little sound booths. When you see the final thing it’s a beautiful piece of art. Your own part in the process was so individual and secluded it’s like it didn’t happen. Q: And that couldn’t be further from The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, your other major project of the year… REYNOLDS: It was great fun putting a new spin on the story. As a cast we had a lot of laughs together – Samuel [L Jackson] and Salma [Hayek] are just hilarious people to work with, and when you have acting royalty like Richard [E Grant] popping into shot every now again, you know you are a part of something special. Q: It’s nice to have an action movie that is genuinely funny, rather than trying too hard. REYNOLDS: I think that’s coming in more and more now. There is so much serious action superhero stuff out there and I think it’s cool to put a funny slant on things. That’s much more who I am as an actor these days anyway – I’m sure if I’d been born a generation earlier I would have been one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles [laughs]. Q: You sound very happy these days?

REYNOLDS: I’m very happy to be where I am now. I didn’t have that good a time in my twenties, but when I hit 29 I had an early midlife crisis and then I started to make up for lost time and began having more fun. But my life now is very good. Q: So that was a big turning point in your life? REYNOLDS: Sure – I kind of disconnected from how I was thinking and learned to live in the present. In my twenties I was trying to grow up in a hurry because I thought I had lived too quiet and boring a life when I was younger. But in the process of having fun and being kind of wild for a while I sort of lost something about who I was. I’ve always kind of bounced around. So I needed to take a few steps back and disconnect from that and learn to appreciate everything the way I did when I was younger and become a more open and interesting person. Q: You grew up in a very beautiful part of the world in Vancouver, Canada. You’re very outspoken when it comes to preserving the environment? REYNOLDS: I want my daughters to grow up in a world where they won’t have to struggle to breathe clean air, where they won’t have to deal with a warmer climate and all

the terrible implications that has for our planet. Those kinds of concerns terrify me. I want them to enjoy a world similar to the one in which I lived. I spent a lot of time growing up in nature and getting to experience the natural beauty we have in British Columbia and the rivers, lakes, mountains, and forests. That time of my life gave me an incredible sense of freedom and I want to be able to do whatever I can to help make sure that my children will grow up in that kind of a world. Q: Why has Deadpool meant so much to you? REYNOLDS: I love everything about it, about him. I never would have stuck with it for so long if I didn’t believe so much in his power and abilities and that common bond between us. He’s the best role I’ve ever played. Ultimately, Deadpool is funny – he’s acerbic and sarcastic, he’s a hero but is flawed. He knows

he’s in a comic book film which is a first for this genre. It’s sexual, it’s quite violent with quite a few swear words which you don’t get too often [laughs] in this field as it were. Q: Why did it take so long to make the first movie? REYNOLDS: We wrote a script six, seven years before it finally got accepted – it was the best incarnation of the character that could ever have been created and the studio, they liked it but it was like they were locked in complete inaction. They were fiercely protective of the character so nothing happened. I don’t know, I’m still not sure why it took so long. When I was going up for Green Lantern, I remember saying to them, ‘look, if I get this, you know, this is it, I probably won’t be able to be involved in Deadpool’. I thought I’d never get another opportunity, this is the last chance.

And still, that did nothing. And then we shot this test footage to see if we could get momentum going again. That was only meant for in-house, it was only meant to be seen by the eyes that needed to see it, for the executives at Fox, and they loved it, but nothing happened. Then it leaked, and overnight, it just blew up. And that’s the reason the film got made. The reaction from Comic Con, Twitter and Facebook, that is the only reason it got made. Within a month of all that, the studio finally said to us, ‘go ahead, make your movie,’ and that was that. Finally the good fight we’d been fighting for so long, was all worth it. Q: You’ve made some really interesting film choices in the last decade, from The Voices to Buried to Green Lantern to The Captive, Deadpool, of course, and

a plethora of recent voiceover projects. What is part of your decision making process? REYNOLDS: I don’t have a specific way of doing things and boy, I wish I was cleverer about it because there have been a lot of ups and downs [laughs]. Q: Regarding one of those ‘downs’, Green Lantern, were you disappointed by the response? REYNOLDS: I was very proud of the film, I still am. Would I do anything differently, absolutely not. I’m really glad I did it, I got to learn so much about the process of creating a project on that scale, and preparing for something like that. Q: Like Lantern, you must have prepared really hard for Deadpool to get into shape? REYNOLDS: For me, it’s functional because I don’t want to hurt myself falling on cement

so I have to do it. It’s not a case of, and I often read, ‘I just feel so much better for it, I feel great in this shape,’ and you know, that’s crap. It’s painful being in that shape, it’s physically painful. I always laugh when I hear some actor say, ‘I put on 40 pounds of muscle for this role.’ That is not possible, your body cannot carry that much muscle. If you put on maybe seven, eight pounds, you’re huge. That’s a lot. That’s all you need. Q: You’re a funny guy – was humour was a big part of your childhood? REYNOLDS: I’m the youngest of four boys so I was never going to win with my fists, I had to win with something else. And for me, I discovered very early on that that was mouthing off. It worked for me, and it helped me out in high school, it got me out of fights. Q: Was high school a particularly rough time? REYNOLDS: No, not like you’re thinking. It was high school, it was no rougher than most kids have it. I survived, and that’s often the best outcome from it. Q: What’s the toughest challenge for any actor? REYNOLDS: I think it’s the reality that it’s really hard to escape your identity when

you’re working in film. When you’re up on the big screen, you’re really larger than life and even if you change your hair or grow a beard or wear glasses, your identity remains a part of you, at least in terms of how the audience perceives you. There’s still this general image of you and you want to be able to expand that awareness that the public has and make audiences feel comfortable seeing you outside of those roles that established your persona. Q: And the best part? REYNOLDS: The on-the-set experience. I love working with the crew. I love that kind of roadside attraction. When I was shooting The Captive I’d go to the local movie theatres, I’d hang out with the people. You can’t beat that. Q: You and Blake have been pretty successful in keeping your daughters out of the spotlight, is it something you have to work hard at? REYNOLDS: It’s a simple case of two worlds, one is work, the other is home and I never want the two of them to mix because who wants their work mixing with their home. Most of us like that divide and I am no different. I’ve been around Hollywood, in Hollywood

for 25 years, when I say in it, I mean working in it and I’ve seen so many make the mistake of allowing their lives, their home lives to become intertwined and consumed almost and, you know, life is hard enough without that kind of spotlight. Q: How would you feel if your daughters followed mom and dad into the business? REYNOLDS: I’m not sure to be honest but it’s their decisions. I don’t know if I would be actively encouraging it, encouraging them to become showbiz kids because showbiz kids are monsters, I think we all know that [laughs]. Q: Perhaps they’d rather a life out of the spotlight caring for animals – how do they get on with your Golden Retriever, Baxter. REYNOLDS: They love him. He is a big part of the family. I found Baxter at an S.P.C.A. in Houston. I was looking for a rescue dog for a friend who wanted a chocolate lab, which they didn’t have. I saw

this guy, a golden retriever mix, and took him for a walk, then took the dog back to his cage, got in my car. It was about 45 minutes later, I turned the car around – it was the way he’d looked going back into the cage. I went back in and said, ‘Let’s get the fuck out of here!’ And Baxter jumped in the car and sat with his paw around my neck! It was like a very brief rom-com: boy walks dog, boy loses dog, boy makes public declaration of love, sincere music swells, and off we go into the wild blue yonder. Q: Finally, how is your torment of Hugh Jackman going. Are you still on that one? REYNOLDS: I will never relent in my torment of Hugh Jackman. And you want to know why? Because I love him. Yes, it’s to disguise my unrequited adoration. And it also gives me an excuse to do a terrible Australian accent. e

She was accused of plagiarism, with the song Brutal compared to the 1978 ELVIS COSTELLO hit Pump It Up. The veteran singer defended her saying his song was inspired by 1965’s Subterranean Blues by BOB DYLAN, which in turn was influenced by 1956’s Too Much Monkey Business by CHUCK BERRY. COSTELLO added, “It’s how rock ‘n’ roll works. You take the broken pieces of another thrill and make a brand new toy. That’s what I did” THE KILLERS drummer RONNIE VANNUCCI JR. says the band will release a new album this month. DARIA SANETRA

We spoke to author, plant-based chef, health and weight loss coach, Daria Sanetra to find out about her new book and her passion for raw food. PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF INBAL DAHAN Hi Daria, thanks for speaking to us, please tell us a little about yourself I was born in Poland where I spent most of my youth in nature gathering wild blueberries, chanterelles, porcini mushrooms and other edible gems. Since leaving Poland in my early 20’s, I’ve travelled to more than 40 countries and it was during these travels that I discovered sunny Andalusia, where I now call home. With degrees in Political Science and Law, a career in politics or the legal profession beckoned but my heart was pushing me in a different direction. At an early age, I had more than my fair share of health issues including weight gain, hormonal imbalance, anaemia, skin problems, severe hair loss, gallstones, decreased bone 120 / AUGUST 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

mineral density, malnutrition and more. Desperate for help, I consulted many conventional medical professionals, but after years of frustration, pills, medicines and failure after failure doing things according to the conventional way, I came to the conclusion that there was only one person who could really help me. That was Me! I dived into self-study and the path to self-healing in the unconventional world and discovered a way to eat and live that solved all the issues I was suffering from and I haven’t turned back since. What made you write this book? I wrote this book for everyone who has ever asked what I really eat on a daily basis and how I shop for food. Your Emotional Belly Cure outlines it all, step-by-step, with beautiful photography and

my favourite recipes. I wanted to create a guide to help people to eat healthfully, close to the earth, with the best ingredients, so when you sit down to enjoy a delicious meal you know what you are eating and you haven’t spent all day in the kitchen! It brings me so much joy to be able to share a glimpse of this happiness in my life with readers. How will it help people? This book will give readers a new perspective on alternative ways to live and eat. It is a positive book, not concentrating on the negative and what is bad, but rather the good things. It will lead people through their weight-loss, health and self-love journey. I hope it will inspire and equip people with the knowledge on how to take steps to better health and to improve the health of society and the planet too.

You mention the ‘raw truth’ in your book? Can you explain what that is? The raw truth is that it is the most natural thing in the world to eat raw food. Homo sapiens are the only species which eats cooked food, whereas 1,800,000 species eat raw food. It’s the way we were meant to eat and the best way to serve our bodies, yet viewed as a radical lifestyle. I want my book to encourage people to think and question how we should be eating and living our lives, to be in the best health ourselves and look after the health of our planet. Why should people eat raw food? Raw food helps to purify the body and mind. I simply love it because it’s fun, colourful and delicious. My body feels at one with Mother Earth and receives her nourishment and love, naturally. A raw food diet is high in fresh, living, plant-based foods packed with nutrients: vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, antioxidants and phytonutrients. It also maximises the intake of enzymes, something which really improved my health and can help so many more people. Raw food builds strong immunity, helps with detoxification, increases energy levels, prevents and heals disease. Simply and amazingly, it optimises our health. Isn’t it a very restrictive and difficult diet to follow? Eating raw is easy when you compare it to living with illness,

and over time it becomes a lifestyle. Of course, making a change to a different way of eating is uncomfortable and takes effort at first. But that’s the whole idea, to become uncomfortable and accept it, until it becomes comfortable. Upon hearing that I am a ‘raw foodie’, I feel that most people envision me eating nothing but lettuce and cucumber three times a day. Often the next few words ushered from their lips are something along the lines of ‘OMG, how can you eat salad so many times a day, don’t you get bored?’ In fact, in this lifestyle, the sky’s the limit as

there are so many new options like raw pizzas, pastas, lasagnes, breads, burgers, salads, cakes, chocolates and many more! There are some mouth-watering dishes to make and I’ve included many great recipes in my book. How can people get a copy of the book? The e-book is available on my website www.dariasanetra. com and can also be found on Amazon as an e-book and paperback. The hardback book is available from The Bookshop in Centro Comercial La Colonia, San Pedro. e WWW.ESSENTIALMAGAZINE.COM / 121

Small and large spaces become special, in any of a variety of decorative styles

“The new trends are moving away from outward presentation to a more homely style that has to look wonderful but is also very much focused on comfort and wellbeing.” As a result, the styling of furniture and objects such as door handles, baths and taps is sleek and modern, but the materials are changing. “A few years ago, chrome and lots of shiny ‘bling’ objects were the in-thing, but they have gone right out of fashion,” says Andrea. “Now, at best, you can still find brushed chrome, but people prefer steel, iron, brass and rose gold in combination with very avant-garde forms and shapes. It’s an exciting new blend of styles and materials.” ›

A SENSE OF WELL-BEING We know that the Covid experience of the past year has placed renewed importance on the home as the central base of one’s life, and as a result the property sector, DIY and also interior design industries are all booming, as large numbers of people have a reinvigorated appreciation of the home and what it means. This has resulted in greater investment in a new, more spacious property, or the upgrading of the existing one, and here too there have been some new trends. “We too are very busy and our

As a result, we’re moving towards more natural materials and tones, with openplan layouts focused on creating special zones.” “Today’s buyers in this region are spending much longer periods of time here, and this produces

THE RISE OF WABI-SABI DESIGN In doing this she is often asked to embrace an ancient but increasingly popular design philosophy that has its roots in Japan and Buddhist thinking in general. Wabi-Sabi pursues a sense of timeless, balanced harmony that incorporates into its designs an acceptance that beauty is transient, perfection fleeting, as well as an understanding of the workings of time and nature on that which we create. Its result in modern designs is a less rigid approach to creating beauty. “The focus has changed. People still desire beautiful homes that look and feel impressive, but they also want to create their own oasis of style, comfort and happiness, and for this, natural materials, as well as stunning colour palates, 136 / AUGUST 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

textures and private areas where you can hide away or indeed socialise are of great importance. Naturally this also includes outdoor living spaces, which are such a feature of life in Marbella, and gardens are a vital element in this too.” In addition to interior designers, she has five qualified architects in her team at Ambience Home Design, and works closely with landscaping firms, as well as selected builders, lighting experts and other specialists in projects that range from home decoration to complete refurbishment and even new-build concepts. “For this, people these days want to see detailed renders of such a quality that they can be confused with actual photos, so they have become part of all our projects.”

CONDUCTING AN ORCHESTRA OF DESIGN ELEMENTS Such rendered designs even feature specific furniture pieces and artwork to provide a virtual representation of the real-life design. “The beauty of this technology is that you can look at it and

make changes along the way, either in person or in Zoom meetings where we share screens during these creative processes,” says Andrea. “Even if it slows down the process, it allows us to communicate design concepts in a more accurate, visual way.”

This, together with a new, more organic design trend allows for a wider eclectic blend of design elements, which the skilled professional knows how to bring together to stunning effect. “We work with specially sourced, mostly Italian, furniture brands, and I love discovering new ones at the Milan and Paris design fairs,” says Andrea, “but now we can once more add ethnic, classical and antique elements to modern interiors… and when done correctly this produces some of the finest results of all. It is perhaps more difficult than a rigidly adhered to style, but so much more rewarding.” e

“We have a very complementary way of working and decorating,” says Ivonne, whose skill in visualising and then creating richly ambient interior and outdoor decorative environments finds equal expression in the bespoke designs of Geoffrey. The Antwerpborn industrial designer uses his technical skills to produce one-off pieces of furniture, artwork and also the kind of carpentry found in the finest of homes. You may not expect it from an interior design company, but this even extends to swimming pools!

SWIMMING POOLS WITH A DIFFERENCE For Geoffrey and Ivonne, swimming pool design comes naturally. In fact, they consider it a seamless part of the other decorative and lifestyle elements of a home, and as such an extension of the indoor and outdoor spaces they dress with such particular care. “Our work takes us in many different directions, exactly because of our flexible and tailored approach,” says Ivonne. “We began designing swimming pools at the request of our clients, who wanted a seamless continuity of style within their homes.” ›

The initial projects were the natural evolution of exterior design work, requiring the team to extend the styling of indoor living spaces and terrace areas to the pools and sunbathing decks themselves. ambiences, ranging from fresh blue tones and austere black to the green laguna look. “All of this is carefully thought out,” says Ivonne, “so that the tonalities match the house, garden, terrace area, views and of course the materials selected.” Modern materials and building innovations have widened the scope of possibilities, and this again has inspired a great many creative ideas, not to mention hightech applications that enable you to regulate the temperature of the water at the touch of a button, or should I say screen. ›

“Naturally, as elsewhere in the house, we apply not only aesthetic design but also incorporate the latest technologies when needed and desired, but perhaps the most singular of all has been a glass plunge pool set high on the terrace of a luxurious apartment.” For Geoffrey, Ivonne and the team at Femont Galvan, overcoming the technical challenges while making it a design feature that merges with the endless sky and sea horizons was a pleasure that symbolises a unique company’s spirit and philosophy. “In our work, we very much believe that challenges are merely a creative hurdle.” e g Showroom: Urb. 10 TIPS TO FEEL BRILLIANT EVERY DAY If you live by these tips every day you will find increasingly that they give you a brilliant day. What I really love about them is that so long as you follow them they cannot not work. Try them for a week and see how it goes. Then if you feel better, it makes sense to carry on – and the longer you live by these the better you’ll progressively feel. WORDS DAVID HURST Z BE HUMBLE Celebrate, by all means, but resist being boastful. As writer CS Lewis said: "Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it's thinking of yourself less." Connected to this is that if we realise we might have caused someone harm in some way, even if it was

170 / AUGUST 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

accidentally, that we should say sorry as soon as possible. Never say: “I’m sorry, but…” as we often then just go into why something happened the way it did, and it's likely to open it all up again. Humbly say sorry, draw a line under it – and then everyone can move on.

Z DON'T COMPARE YOURSELF TO

ANYONE ELSE Those celebrities and that friend may look to have it all, but we never really know the full picture. The only comparison is to check that you're making progress from where you once were.

MAKE DECISIONS Many people suffer from indecision or are always making rash decisions. Both are painful ways to live. Instead, get the right balance. Have a think about any decision, but make sure to make one.

Remember that sometimes we need to give time sometime – and know that if you're going in the right direction for your life, you're going in the right direction.

Z BE HONEST – INCLUDING TO YOURSELF No one gets away with lies. Everybody has been created like this, otherwise humanity would have stopped existing many centuries ago. So always be honest. To yourself as well. Pay attention to your gut instinct as it's always telling you the truth. If you know an aspect of your lifestyle is not good for you and/or those around you, make some positive changes straight away.

Z LOOK AFTER YOURSELF AS SOMEONE YOU TRULY LOVE Go gently on yourself – know that everyone makes mistakes now and then. Eat well, exercise regularly and carry yourself well too. Our posture plays a great part in how we feel, so hold your head up and walk tall.

Z KNOW ACCEPTANCE Accept people, places and things for who and what they are. Accept yourself too – with all your amazing talents and qualities and don’t be fearful of using them.

Acceptance never means rolling over if somebody says or does something that's not decent. But it is helpful to know that there's a lot in this world that we are powerless over changing. Try your best to take your luck as it comes, and fit yourself to it. Go with the flow.

Z BE AGREEABLE Many people in recovery circles know about the Just For Today card that lists several daily suggestions to live by every day. One of its methods for living says: “Just for today I will be agreeable. I will look as well as I can, dress becomingly, talk low, act courteously, criticise not one bit, not find fault with anything and not try to improve or regulate anybody except myself.” It's a positive and uplifting way to live.

Z BE KIND Being kind to others will always leave us feeling good inside. It lifts our spirits. When we feel good from the inside, we don't need anything from the outside to fill us up. That includes things such as drinking, work, relationship, drugs or shopping. When you do loving things, selflove will grow.

Z DON'T WORRY. RELAX Every day, spend at least 30 minutes relaxing. Somewhere quiet and still is best. Breathe calmly. Meditating at the start and again at the end of the day helps a great number of people to live well.

Z CHOOSE TO BE HAPPY This can appear flippant to someone who's stressed, anxious or depressed – but what many people don't realise is that we have a choice over which thoughts we pay attention to every day. Anything we focus on grows bigger, whether that's positive or negative. So try to catch negative thoughts before they change the way you feel. Otherwise the negative feelings they create will lead to more negative thoughts. As Abraham Lincoln said: "Most folks are as happy as they make up their minds to be." g David Hurst is a Wellbeing Coach with four books published on emotional and mental health recovery, including 12 Steps To 1 Hero and The Anxiety Conversation. He has also written for publications around the world including The Times, The Guardian, Psychologies, Esquire and Marie Claire. WHAT

COVID-19 TESTS

ARE AVAILABLE ON THE COAST?

If you are planning on travelling abroad, then you are probably aware that you need to obtain an EU Digital COVID Certificate – a digital document stating you have been vaccinated against COVID-19, recovered from the virus, or obtained a negative test result. Even if you aren’t travelling, you may wish to get tested to ensure you isolate if you obtain a positive result. What tests are available on the Coast and which should you opt for? WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS

172 / AUGUST 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

WHO SHOULD TAKE A TEST? If you have symptoms of COVID-19 then testing is key but if you have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive, do you have the obligation to get tested as well? According to the Spanish government, testing for close contacts of someone with a positive result is not required. Rather, close contacts should remain at home for 10 days, calling Tel: 900 400 061 if they develop symptoms during this time.

positive is important. The UK government actually recommends regular testing because about one in three people with COVID-19 are asymptomatic but can still infect others. The Spanish Ministry of Health has approved the sale of rapid antigen tests and serological tests in pharmacies for home use. This is a big step forward, but you should bear in mind that these tests are less accurate than those carried out in labs.

WHICH TESTS CAN YOU HAVE? HOME TESTING If you live with other people, knowing whether or not you are

Various tests are currently available without a medical prescription at a number of clinics – Quirónsalud,

HC Marbella, Helicópteros Sanitarios, Clínica del Río and Xanit Hospitals to name a few, but you can also go directly to a large laboratory such as Synlab. Some private insurers (such as Sanitas and Adeslas) offer clients complete COVID-19 (PCR + serology) examinations, which will tell you if you are infected, have had the virus in the past, and whether you have acquired natural immunity.

THE RANGE OF AVAILABLE COVID-19 TESTS INCLUDE: Z PCR: This antigen test (which works by amplifying DNA) tells you if you currently have the virus in your system and is generally prescribed for those with active symptoms though anybody can pay to have it. It involves taking a nasopharyngeal sample, with results available in 24 to 48 hours. Price: Approximately €100.

Price: Approximately €135. Z Rapid Antigen Test (or Lateral Flow Test): This antigen test, taken via a nasal swab, is indicated for people who have no symptoms but have been in close contact with someone who is positive. It informs you if you are currently positive and results are available in as little as 15 minutes. The lateral flow test involves inserting the swab with the sample taken into a liquid, then running the liquid along an absorbent pad. If viral proteins are present, a coloured line will appear. It is important to note that this test cannot distinguish between those who were infected (but who are no longer transmitting the virus) and those who are still infectious. Price: Approximately €39.

Z Quick Serology or Antibody Test: Taken via a small amount of blood to detect the presence of viral proteins, the quick serology/antibody tests offer results in 10 minutes telling you if you Z TMA: This test tells you if you have had a COVID-19 infection in the currently have the virus. Like the PCR, past. Antibodies can take one to three it looks for genetic material from the weeks to develop so even someone with coronavirus. It requires a nasal swab and negative results could still have been provides your results in just two hours. infected. Price: Approximately €100. Price: Approximately €40. RT-LAMP: This test multiplies specific sequences of RNA of the coronavirus, which are then made into ‘copy DNA’ and amplified. It involves studying a saliva sample (2ml) taken before one brushes one’s teeth or an hour after eating or drinking. The RT-LAMP test is another quick alternative to the PCR and it delivers results in 90 minutes.

TRAVELLING WITH THE EU DIGITAL COVID CERTIFICATE The plan was that if you are vaccinated and able to obtain the corresponding EU Digital COVID Certificate, you could be free of restrictions on travel to all member states of the EU – including the need to quarantine,, but a new serge of infections and rapid spread of specific

variants have prompted some countries to make additional requirements that change weekly and depend on the destination. Checking government websites about current rules at the time of travel is essential.

WHICH TEST DO YOU NEED TO TRAVEL TO SPAIN? Spain categorises countries based on their level of spread and when travelling from one that carries a high-risk, testing is required. Various tests are accepted, including PCRs, TMAs, and RT-LAMPs carried out within 72 hours prior to arrival and the rapid antigen tests done within 48 hours before arrival. The UK accepts the same tests as Spain, which you must take even if you have been fully vaccinated or you are travelling from a ‘green list’ country.

OBTAINING THE EU DIGITAL COVID CERTIFICATE In Andalusia, if you are vaccinated or have recovered from COVID and have an official PCR test to prove this, you can obtain your EU Digital COVID Certificate from ClicSalud+ at www.sspa.juntadeandalucia.es/ servicioandaluzdesalud. For this option, please note that you need to be enrolled in the Spanish social security system and have digital access to the platform. If you are only presenting a test for your travel, the certificate will be provided directly by the laboratory with a validating QR code. Before booking an appointment, check with the clinic of your choice that they do provide the QR code on the test results. e

REAL DE LA QUINTA LUXURY IN A NATURAL SETTING

176 / AUGUST 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

Since its very conception, the intention has been to make Real de La Quinta a luxury residential country club resort with a difference. Quality of life within the midst of nature is a key ingredient of this. WORDS MICHEL CRUZ PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF REAL DE LA QUINTA

S

et within the scenic beauty of hills and valleys just inland from Nueva Andalucía, the luxury resort community of Real de La Quinta is emerging as one of the most enticing residential options on the Costa del Sol. The first development, Olivos, sold out quickly, with the first owners already moving in. The reason for this success is the fact that the boutique development of luxury apartments and penthouses is not merely a single urbanisation but forms part of a well-thought-out master-planned residential resort that will include a variety of complementary villas and apartment complexes. All this, built around a central concept of lowdensity, quality of life living, surrounded by nature and some of the most stunning mountain and sea views available in this region. All of this is possible because Real de La Quinta encompasses a large gated country club domain of 200 hectares. Situated in the hills and valleys just inland from Nueva Andalucía, it is the continuation of the original La Quinta, but designed in and for the 21st century. This involves not only the use of the latest technologies and amenities, but also a very clear dedication to sustainable development and the creation of a gated residential area that offers luxury, style, comfort and close proximity to Marbella and its amenities in a fantastic natural setting at the very point where Marbella and Benahavís merge with protected nature. ›

LIVING ON THE EDGE OF MARBELLA – AND A NATIONAL PARK Real de La Quinta the first resort development in Spain to receive BREEAM certification for sustainable development – meaning that the commitment to environmentally-friendly construction and management systems goes far beyond the usual level. It centres upon the creation of a collection of boutique developments surrounded by open nature and overlooking a man-made lagoon that includes a lagoon-style pool, an elegant lakeside restaurant and clubhouse with full

178 / AUGUST 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

amenities, as well as a pathway that offers views of the water, the hills and the six-hole golf course. “Even though we use grey water as part of our water-saving management systems, we also opted for this configuration instead of a nine-hole course exactly because it is a more environmentally-friendly option,” says Marisol Serrano, Sales Director of Real de La Quinta. Indeed, with the Golf Valley’s fairways just a few minutes away, the main focus is on creating a golf course within a verdant valley so that residents have the convenience and beauty of a

golf circuit on their doorstep. It all forms part of a clear focus on what some are calling ‘new concept luxury’ – quality time and sensory experiences spent in a safe, private and inspiring setting. As with many other aspects, Real de La Quinta takes it a step further. “Amazingly, and rather uniquely, we are on the edge of both Marbella and an actual national park,” says Marisol, as the Sierra de las Nieves mountain reserve which extends inwards in all directions from here is about to be elevated to the status of a Spanish National Park – the highest level of protection that exists. “It will be the 16th National Park in Spain, and one of only three in Andalucía,” she reports, “and this means that there will be no further development bordering Real de La Quinta.” She regards this not only as a bonus for quality of life, but also for future property values within the resort. ›

THE BOUTIQUE CONCEPT OF QUERCUS The second development of 96 apartments and penthouses is already under way – ahead of schedule due to strong demand – and it showcases its own evolution of the timeless architectural styling and material finishing that makes Olivos so eye-catching. Clean, modern lines are added to with stone and wood finishing in a use of architecture and materials that is mirrored indoors and on the spacious terraces that form an integral part

180 / AUGUST 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

of the quality of life that Real de La Quinta offers. The developers have a long-term vision and commitment to the maintenance and management of this residential country club resort, and this is reflected in the timeless styles and build qualities of both Olivos and Quercus. The latter continues the boutique living concept initiated with Olivos, and offers a combination of two, three and four-bedroom apartments, penthouses and garden flats

overlooking lush gardens planted with indigenous species. At their heart lies a crystalline swimming pool and sundeck, from which to take in the majesty of the surrounding mountains and the hills flowing down towards the Mediterranean. This blend of sea and mountain views marks out Real de La Quinta, as does the range of facilities within it, the proximity to Marbella and the capacity to head into the hills, wooded groves and green valleys. It is perfect terrain for hiking, mountain biking and horse riding – making full use of the country club’s own equestrian centre. Residents can spot goats on the hillsides from their sunny terraces, along with eagles soaring overhead, and forests that contain one of the marvels of the area: Castaño Santo, a giant tree believed to be over 1,000 years old. It’s all part of a unique mix of lifestyle ingredients at Real de La Quinta that mix country life, nature, resort luxuries and modern homes in a stunning setting on the edge of Marbella. e

his is exactly what a leading high-end property developer from Berlin and long-time aficionado of the Costa del Sol thought. With the resoluteness that comes from many years of experience in the industry, he acquired this little slice of paradise and assembled a talented international team to come up with something truly special that would do justice to so wonderful a setting. YOUR OWN PERSONAL DOMAIN From its position on the panoramic periphery of La Mairena, east of Marbella, the homes being created at Ocean View cast their glance across an arc of views that spans from the Sierra Nevada in the east to the entrance of the Atlantic Ocean in the west. Marbella and the shoreline take centre stage in this, along with stunning hillside country views

in a gated complex that lies within almost two hectares of its own grounds – and on the edge of 230 hectares of protected nature, including part of the Sierra de las Nieves National Park. “It is a magnificent spot, protected from further development and close to all the amenities of La Mairena, which include golf, a leading international tennis academy, private

Spanish and German schools and several restaurants, not to mention unspoiled open nature just made for hiking and horse riding. Indeed, follow the road down through Elviria and you coast along to the beach in less than ten minutes, unhindered by congestion or even a single traffic light. Marbella itself can be reached in under 15 minutes, so while it is in the midst of glorious nature, Ocean View is also at the heart of life on the Costa del Sol.

DESIGN THE DETAILS As befits property of this quality and attention to detail, arriving at Ocean View is the first part of the special quality of life it offers. Passing through a beautifully styled gated

security entrance, a series of signature entrances await, which already set these homes apart from most, for where the underground parking areas are often an afterthought, here they are immaculately finished to the same high standards as the homes themselves, creating the sense of arriving at a premium destination, complete with elegant lighting and the kind of lobby normally reserved for a fivestar hotel. “We’ve approached the design of Ocean View from the perspective of a boutique hotel,” says its founder Sascha Falk, “wanting to

create the kind of homes anyone would love to live in.” In keeping with this, the parking spaces and storage rooms are generously sized, the lift an elegant feature in its own right and the concierge service another five-star deluxe feature that completes the select boutique feel of Ocean View and complements amenities such as its own club with a stunning 25-metre heated pool and equally panoramic sundeck. “And for peace of mind, Ocean View is manned 24/7 with a security guard, video surveillance and a fully fenced perimeter.”

PERSONALISE YOUR HOME Many modern projects allow for a great deal of personalisation these days, but the creator of Ocean View takes this signature project to a new level of made-to-measure design and finishing, enabling buyers not just to make their preferred selection of materials and tonal/ textural combinations, but even to adjust details such as layouts, specifications and add elements unique to their home. “This way, each of the two- or three-bedroom apartments and the penthouses is an individual property that reflects the taste, lifestyle and preferences of its owner,” says Sascha Falk, the creative spirit behind a designled project penned by principal architect Pablo Villarroel of renowned Villarroel Torrico

Architects. The concierge team and interior designers of the developer FRD Group are on hand to help owners make their homes a uniquely personal space, offering flexible support that ranges from assistance to a comprehensive design service. “We have an apartment-style sales office just a few minutes away at the Elviria commercial centre,” says Tony Parrado, “and it offers a live, three-dimensional feel not just of the properties themselves, but also gives an insight into the wide palette of design features available to owners – though to appreciate the views and the wonderful natural setting of Ocean View there is no substitute for visiting and experiencing it in person.” e

FINCA LA TORRE

FROM ANCIENT OLIVE GROVES TO YOUR PALATE WORDS MARISA CUTILLAS PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF FINCA LA TORRE

220 / AUGUST 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

n a country that is known for its millenary tradition in manufacturing fine olive oil, being hailed ‘the best of the best’ is an accolade that reveals painstaking work and dedication. Finca La Torre, ensconced in northeastern Antequera, has enjoyed this privilege time and time again, with a long list of prizes and recognitions to its name. One of the most impressive is its 100/100 rating, received at the prestigious Flos Olei Competition for its Hojiblanca extra-virgin olive oil. There are only two Spanish olive oils that have received this rating in the history of the competition – a fact that has made gourmets and restaurateurs around the world sit up and take notice. At Marbella’s own Boho Club, for instance, guests are invited to dip freshly baked bread into this ‘liquid gold’ selection before their meal. The aim is to awaken the palate to the appealing flavour and aroma of well-balanced, organic, biodynamic olive oil which is exceptionally complex yet familiar all at once.

BATHED IN SUNSHINE SINCE ANCIENT TIMES The land occupied by Finca La Torre once formed part of Singilia Barba – an ancient Roman city whose majesty can be gleaned from the remaining ruins (Roman columns and the vestiges of an ancient olive mill, located by the Finca’s main entrance). During the Nasrid era, Arabian dwellers built the watchtower that gives the company its name. It wasn’t until 1998 that the estate was turned into an olive oil enterprise, with 104 acres planted with olive groves and organic and biodynamic certifications obtained. In 2010, the land was acquired

by Armada Investment, which has dedicated heart and soul to producing one of the world’s very best olive oils. Today, the company is present in over 25 countries, producing 50 tonnes of organic extra-virgin olive oil annually for national consumption and exports. The Finca comprises 380 hectares of land (230 of which are covered by olive groves and 150 of which comprise pastures and Mediterranean forest). Despite its impressive size, says Finca La Torre’s Director, Víctor Pérez, “We extract only 100,000 litres of oil per year, only 50% of which makes it to our bottles.”

BIODYNAMIC OLIVE OIL PRODUCTION The aim of biodynamic agriculture is to rescue traditional cultivation practices in order to boost soil fertility and to encourage plants and animals to coexist symbiotically. One of its tenets is to use compost to boost the soil’s microbial activity naturally. Another involves planting, pruning and harvesting olives according to the influence the moon and stars exert on the natural rhythms of the soil. Biodynamic methods also embrace energy and water conservation techniques. ›

VARIETIES TO TASTE Finca La Torre produces its olive oil from four varieties: Arbequina, Cornicabra, Hojiblanca and Picuda. The Hojiblanca Selection is described by the company as “intensely fruity, with notes of freshly cut grass and olive leaf. On the palate, it is bitter, progressively spicy and lingering, with hints of green almond, apple, and banana peel.” The Arbequina Selection is “medium fruity, with clear notes of green apple and green banana. Sweet on the palate, with a touch of almond; spicy and smooth, without a lingering finish.” The Coupage Selection (containing 60% Hojiblanca, 30% Arbequina, and 10% Cornicabra) can

be described as “medium fruity, with notes of freshly cut grass and olive leaf. On the palate, it is bitter, progressively spicy, with a medium lingering finish, and with hints of green almond, apple, banana peel and nutty flavours.” Víctor adds, “We also sell single-variety packs featuring four individual bottles, each bearing one of our four varieties.” Visit Finca La Torre’s site to discover a wider selection of products – including flavoured oils, vinegars, and One – a limited edition comprising both Arbequina and Hojiblanca oils.

OLIVE OIL TOURISM If gourmet tours appeal to the traveller in you, a visit to the Finca may be worth planning. While there, you can enjoy tours of fragrant olive groves, take part in birdwatching, experience guided tasting tours, and check out local areas of interest. Finca La Torre offers Andalusian-style accommodation, located among the olive trees and surrounded by a lush landscape that teems with native flora and fauna and boasts a sunset that is no less than magical. Sr. Pérez tells me that owing to the current health situation, tours are being offered to small groups and individuals, who should make it a point to book in advance. i www.fincalatorre.com

Looking for something different this summer, that’s fresh, fruity and fun? Look no further than the range of wines which has been released by Pure The Winery, that claim to be vegan friendly, low in calories, and free of all residual sugars.

ZERO SUGAR PURE PLEASURE

PURE

THE WINERY WORDS JAMES SINCLAIR PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF PURE THE WINERY

224 / AUGUST 2021 ESSENTIAL MAGAZINE

THE CONCEPT PURE The Winery began with the idea of creating a new category of wine to meet today’s needs. It is the fruit of the vision of an international group of wine lovers who have created blends of the most exquisite Pinot Noir, Pinot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Barbera and Merlot grapes which are cultured in the Piamonte region of Italy. Combining unique and traditional techniques in the fermentation process, under which all of the natural sugars are converted into alcohol, their expert winemakers have concocted red, white and rosé wines as well as sparkling whites and rosés to cater to all occasions.

Having realised that many adults enjoy drinking wine but often feel guilty about consuming it due to the amount of calories and carbohydrates it contains, that to a large extent, are due to the non-fermented sugars in the wine, they set out on a mission of being able to offer wines that are free of sugar.

This initiative led to a collaboration with a winery in the north of Italy and to a procedure which naturally converts all sugars from the grapes into alcohol. Not only that, but their aptly named PURE zero sugar wines are obtained without carbohydrates under a production process that respects the land and the natural produce it provides, and are completely devoid of any animal products, making them also 100% vegan.

THE WINES There are five wines in the PURE range. All of them have an alcohol content of 10.5% volume and they are available in 750ml bottles which support fresh, funky labels that invite you to have fun. WHITE: This white wine is very fresh on the palate, with notes of citrus fruit and flowers and a touch of minerality in the finish. Made from Chardonnay and Sauvignon, it is the perfect tipple to enjoy on a lovely summer’s day. ROSÉ: The newest in the range, and created with Negrette grapes in French Provence, this rosé exhibits notes of peach and apricot in

combination with strawberries and Mediterranean herbs. Pleasantly full-bodied, it is nevertheless smooth with a prolonged finish. RED: A combination of Barbera and Merlot grapes give rise to this dry red wine, ruby in colour with nuances of violet. It is well ballanced with notes of red fruits and a silky finish, to be enjoyed on any occasion. SPARKLING WHITE: Its golden reflections and fine bubbles will enhance any social gathering. Floral and fruity, with a fresh fragrance resulting from the combination of Pinot and Chardonnay, it has ample body and is a pleasure to drink. SPARKLING ROSÉ: Pinot Noir also features here, giving this sparkling rosé a lively pale pink colour with a touch of orange. On the palate it is smooth and bubbly, with an ample body and an agreeable finish. Guaranteed to liven up any party. Nominated for the Carrefour Innovation Awards 2020 and having already won awards at this year’s Paris Wine Cup Competition, make sure to try a PURE zero sugar wine this summer. i www.purethewinery.com
