MARKS TEY
2015 PGA East Anglian Open at Basildon Golf Club E
d Morton (EM Golf Studio) struggled to hide his emotions after winning a thrilling PGA East Anglian Open by a shot at Basildon. Morton, 33, produced some stunning golf to finish at nine-under-par – one clear of European Senior Tour winner Mark Davis – and claim his first Order of Merit title. He opened up with a superb six-under 66 but was forced to endure some nervy moments on the second day – especially through the closing holes. Bedfordshire-based Morton made three birdies on the inward nine, but also carded three bogies, including a six at the 17th. He put that blip to the back of his mind on the 18th tee, firing a confident iron down the middle before hitting a pitch pin high, a fraction left of the green. From there he rolled a lag putt to within a couple of inches and tapped in for a three-under 69 that would secure a hugely satisfying victory. Morton said: “My family will tell you I am a very emotional guy and it’s very difficult for me to hold it in sometimes. I almost cried, getting to 10under! “It’s just been a long time, failing after failure – EuroPro, Challenge Tour – just never quite reaching my potential, through injuries and stuff. “I’m feeling very emotional. This is a big one – the biggest win I’ve had. It was blooming hard work! In the last seven holes, I had one par and that was at the last.”
Darren Charlton (Dunstable Downs) extended his lead at the top of the Order of Merit. He shot a near text-book 66 on the second day to land third spot, two behind Morton. It was another giant stride towards the PGA Play-Offs in Antalya, Turkey at the end of November for Charlton. He said: “It was all very close on the Order of Merit not only before this event but after the first day, so the second round was very important for me. “I could easily have dropped down to fifth or sixth (on the Order of Merit) with an average one, so it was nice to do the job and give myself a great chance going into the last event. I’m very happy.” David Ed Morton lifts Salisbury the trophy after (Three victory in the PGA Rivers) East Anglian Open. remains in second place on the Order of Merit after tying for 17th. But the big mover was Stuart Brown (Thorpe Wood) who shared eighth spot and is back in the all-important top-three in the Play-Offs race.

When Will
I GET IT? A
s a coach, you hear this all the time. When will I get it? When you start working with a player, and you identify a plan of improvement and identify some key areas that you are going to improve, when are you going to see the results and your scores make a big jump forward? This is not an easy question to answer. Some players see results straight away for some it takes longer... It can depend on a huge number of factors such as how long you have been playing, are the bad habits really ingrained the amount of practice you do and have done lifestyle factors such as your job and family; your flexibility and fitness etc. Remember golf is not an easy game so when you are trying to improve keep these things in mind. • Identify a plan of improvement that is suited to you and your lifestyle • Practice little and often. 10 minutes in the back garden counts • Aim to get a little bit better every day. It adds up... • Be patient and persevere... • Enjoy the process of improvement ... It’s a fun game...

During the winter months, ward off any colds before they get the chance to take a hold – Echinacea, Vitamin C & Zinc, or Guaifenesin can all help fight viral and bacterial infections, and don’t forget a cold virus cannot survive if your body is adequately hydrated. So, top up your glass of water regularly to consume a minimum of 1.5 litres daily to prevent those bugs from having a fighting chance! - 12 -

The winning Woodford team (left to right):Team captain Nick Rowe, Les Curtis, Kevin Williamson, Steve Bland, Zekia Alsanjak, Simon Ironside, John Beecroft and Michael Cutter (both holding the cup) and club Captain Terry Chisholm. The eighth member of the team, Mickey Watkins, was unable to attend the prize-giving.
Woodford Lift Forest Cup for the 13th Time P
laying on home turf gave Woodford golfers a decided advantage when they lifted the Forest Cup as it did the year before when Theydon Bois won the trophy. For golfers who play their own course week in, week out, learn all the undulations and vagaries of both the fairways, the rough and the greens and are thus able to cope much better than the visitors. It was Woodford’s 13th win in this 42-year-old competition between clubs who play on City of London's land in Epping Forest; they last held it in 2011. The eight-strong Woodford team of midhandicappers amassed 290 stableford points to head the runners-up, Royal Epping, by 32 points. Theydon Bois were third on 249, followed by Chingford (233) and the Guildhall Golf Society (186). The format is a morning greensome foursomes over nine holes followed by afternoon 18-hole singles with stableford scoring. The teams are selected from players with handicaps between 13 and 20. In the singles play, only the best six scores
from each team count. Woodford narrowly led Royal Epping after the morning session and team captain Nick Rowe reckoned that if his six best players could each manage 32 points in the single's event, they would win. The team comfortably beat that mark. One of the highlights of the competition came in the greensome foursomes at the 405-yard Gravel Pits hole No 8, when long-hitting Simon Ironside put his drive on to the ninth tee, around 100 yards from the green. His partner then hit the ball into the adjacent pond. Despite entreaties to lift the ball out of shallow water and drop a stroke, Ironside got his right foot wet and smashed the ball out of the water and on to the green 80 yards away. Then in the last group out, Stephen Bland, the club secretary, notched an eagle two on the 288yard Punch Bowl, the 16th hole, effectively putting the icing on Woodford’s cake. The 2016 competition will be hosted by Chingford Golf Club, north-east London.

Apps and Apple Watch Send Technology Adoption in Golf Soaring T
here is a tech boom happening in golf. That’s the message today from golfing app, Hole19, which is reporting record growth in consumer downloads over the last three months. With origins steeped in history and tradition, the game of golf has previously been accused of being slow on the uptake when it comes to embracing technology. However, while professionals are strictly forbidden to use it on course, the adoption of technology at the grassroots end of the market is spreading like wildfire. Nowhere is this more prevalent than in the tracking and performance area. Despite only launching in April 2014, Hole19 has seen massive growth and now boasts two million rounds played using the tracking tool. Half of these rounds have come in the last three months. The app, which assists players on the golf course with GPS distances, hole map imagery, stat tracking, and more, has now amassed over 600,000 users around the world. Part of its growth can be attributed to the fact that Hole19 was one of the first apps available for Apple Watch. Of its users base, over 10,000 are Apple Watch users. Hole19 for Apple Watch allows golfers to quickly reference distances to the front, centre, and back of the green, and allows them to easily track their score and stats without having to take out their iPhone. Commenting on the growth of its usage and adoption of technology in the industry, Anthony Douglas, founder and CEO, Hole19 said, “The rate at which we’ve grown tells a story: golfers are tech-savvy, golfers appreciate good design, and golfers are eager to improve their game. The Apple Watch is great for golf because it meets these
needs while fitting seamlessly into the flow of a round of golf. The Apple Watch is a big win the golf industry, and as is the beauty of technology broadly, it only gets better from here.” Based out of the up and coming tech hub of Lisbon, Portugal, Hole19 is currently in the process of raising Series A funding as it seeks to continue its upwards trajectory of growth. Douglas continued, “This is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what technology can bring to the $76B golf industry. Hole19 is enhancing the on-course golf experience and helping golfers improve. There continues to be huge potential for golfers, courses, coaches, brands and retailers to tap into a wealth
of valuable data. That’s what gets us excited and that’s what we’re working on.” Hole19 has now mapped in-house over 36,000 courses, which represents more than 95% of golf courses worldwide. It has users & courses in over 154 countries with the largest number of users coming from; USA, UK, Germany, Canada and Sweden. Hole19 is a free to download app and is available on iOS, Android, Apple Watch and Android Wear. www.hole19golf.com

Lee Porter, the PGA Professional attached to Hylands Golf Complex in Chelmsford, has been voted Clubmaker of the Year by the Golf Clubmakers Association in the UK. Lee now ranks in the top ten custom-fit clubmakers throughout Europe. No wonder he counts 8 touring golf pros as customers, including the ever popular local Pro, Robbie Coles.
Are longer and lighter drivers really the way to go? A
lthough a fantastic invention I think these clubs can be misleading in the fact that a golfer could think that the adjustability will cure all their woes. Let’s take a look at each individual aspect of an adjustable driver and see the features and benefits for the average club golfer.
Club Adjustment
Feature
Loft
Generally gives the ability to add or subtract one degree of loft.
Lie
Ability to alter the shaft angle to suit player stature.
NO! Benefits
Fine for the better player looking to perfect their ball flight, less effective for the higher handicap. Driver length is more important here, if the driver length is correct the lie is generally good.
Face Angle
Ability to change the way the club face sits at address. For example a golfer who slices the golf ball may opt for a closed (aiming left for a right handed golfer) club face.
This is a good feature for the better player as it enables the golfer to make the club sit in a way the golfer prefers. For the higher handicap it would help to cure slicing/hooking but generally the club cannot be moved enough to make a significant difference.
Weight Distribution
This allows the golfer to swop the movable weights normally positioned in the toe or the heel of the golf club. Some manufacturers now offer a vertical weight shift.
Again, great for the better player wanting to perfect ball flight. Lack of availability of weights can make this a little trivial and for the higher handicap this would help but maybe not cure problems.
My belief is that if you can't hit a driver in the neutral position you probably won’t be able to get the benefit from adjustability. Adjustable golf clubs are marketed in a fashion where golfers are led to believe that a 30 yard slice can be turned into a soft draw with the flick of a wrench – unfortunately this is totally incorrect. Adjustable golf clubs are fantastic but only as a fine tuning tool. - 20 -

T
he Society of Essex Lady Captains 2015 season was brought to a close in mid September with their Autumn Meeting at Maldon Golf Club. On a day when heavy rain had been forecasted, the past and present Lady Captains arrived early to enjoy their bacon rolls and coffee. Then the heavens opened, and the 18 hole 4BBB competition looked like it might have to be delayed or shortened to 9 holes. However, just before 12 the skies brightened and everyone teed off on time. Despite gusting/increasing winds and a few showers everyone made it round the well prepared 9 hole course twice to enjoy a delicious buffet meal. The scores on the day were varied but some pairs clearly excelled themselves. Thanks to Maldon Golf Club for hosting the event and to Lady Captain Kate Stevenson and her large band of helpers. In third place with 36 points were Lynda Dunbar (The Essex) & Pam Stevens

Chipping use Less Loft - 24 -

hen faced with a long chip shot as in the picture, I still only want to carry the ball a short distance on to the edge of the green, approximately where I have laid out the towel. For the ball to land on the area of the towel and run across the green, I have selected a five iron, with less loft on the face, I will get more roll. Try chipping with your straighter faced clubs, I hope it works for you. Happy golfing

Salisbury Shines In Rayleigh Triumph David books Play Offs place alongside Charlton and Portelli
PHOTO: TONY RUSHMER
avid Salisbury lit up the Rayleigh Club with two superb rounds to claim the Lynx Golf Championship – and earn a place at the PGA Play Offs in Turkey. The Three Rivers Golf and Country Club second-year trainee PGA professional became a father for the first time in July with the birth of his son Ryan. And Salisbury, 40, was able to celebrate another red-letter day by recording his first victory in an Order of Merit event. He fired a fabulous first-round 65, backing it up with a cool-as-ice 69 to finish at eight-under-par. That left him no less than four shots clear of a cluster of players including 2015 Order of Merit champion Darren Charlton (Dunstable Downs).
David Salisbury celebrates after winning the Lynx Golf Championship at Rayleigh Club.
Also at four-under-par was Glen Portelli (Verulam) who will be joining Charlton and Salisbury in Turkey in late November after producing a late charge to clinch third spot on the Order of Merit. Luke Eggleston (LE Custom Fitting Studio) and Mark Talbott (Thorpe Hall) were the other pair to finish in a share of second place. But the final two-day tournament of the year in the East region was dominated from start to finish by Salisbury. He birdied four of the first five holes and never looked back. Salisbury, 40, kept a warm putter on the second day as he notched four more birdies to comfortably keep the chasing pack at bay. His win secured him second place in the overall 2015 standings, guaranteeing a spot at Antalya Golf Club where he will compete against an elite field of PGA professionals from Britain and Ireland. The top-10 in Turkey then qualify to play in next May’s multi-million pound BMW PGA Championship at

Wentworth. Salisbury said: “I knew I needed a good result to get into the Play Offs and just played my own game, not focussing on what other people were doing. In fact, I didn’t know I had won until I had finished! “With the Order of Merit race, it’s easy to start thinking, ‘What’s he doing, where’s he lying?’ I’d done that in the last two events and it didn’t help. So, I just focused on my game and when I do that, I know can win. “I’m really pleased to have done that and now I am looking forward to going to Turkey for the Play Offs at the end of November. I’m right up for it!” Charlton, 48, finished in the clear on the Order of Merit – the second time he has bagged top spot, having also done so in 2005. However, the real drama at the Rayleigh Club came with Portelli edging out Stuart Brown (Thorpe Wood) in the scramble for the third and final Play Off berth. Brown held that coveted position starting the tournament but could only finish in a share of 13th, opening the door for Portelli who was playing behind him on the final day. The Hertfordshire ace, 24, barely missed a green as he followed up an opening 69 with the same score to just pip Brown. Portelli said: “I am very pleased to get over the line. It’s probably up there as the biggest achievement of my career so far. I can’t think of anything else that tops it. “It’s what we all set out to do and now I’ve got the chance to qualify for bigger events such as Wentworth. Guys from the region have done very well there in previous years – now I want to go there and fly the flag for the East region.”

Colchester Golfer Displays Perfect Timing to Recoed Hole-in-One A Colchester golfer will have no excuse for missing his next tee-time after winning a limited-edition BOSS watch for achieving a hole-in-one. Michael Moore, 65, scored his ace on the 139-yard, par-three seventh at Stoke by Nayland GC, and the 12-handicapper was rewarded with membership of the exclusive BOSS Watches H1Club and a specially-commissioned, commemorative timepiece. He said: “The pin was at the front of the green, so I initially took out an 8 iron, which I changed to a 7 iron. I hit it 4 foot to the left of the pin, it checked and rolled right and into the hole.”
New on Kindle: A ‘Mine of Information’ from an Industry Authority
W
ith golf at something of a post-recession crossroads – the decline in participation looking as though it may have bottomed out, and new forms of golf emerging to meet the needs of the ‘recreational golfer’ – a timely overview of the industry is given in a new book GOLF ‘More than Just a Game’ written by Bruce Brockway and available as an Ebook on Kindle. This is a ‘must read’ for all golfers and all those involved with golf! This fascinating little book is packed with information which most golfers will be unaware of. It looks at different types of golfer, and what makes golf so attractive to 60 million golfers worldwide – ‘The Golfing Experience’. Golfers will learn how a golf course is created. Golf course design and construction are described in such a way that will make a round of golf so much more interesting and enjoyable. Written for golfers, not as an in depth text book, more a light read to give golfers an awareness of golf, and golf courses which is not normally available to them. It explains how different types of golf courses affect the way the game is played. About - 28 -
the art of designing ‘the challenge’, about construction, drainage and irrigation, and how knowing about grasses, greens and their maintenance for example can affect their putting. It also looks at the current issues facing golf and the measures being taken to ‘grow the game’. It even covers the impact of golf on the environment with regard to land use, appearance, water use, and wildlife habitats. It will give golfers a better understanding of the golf course and therefore make a round of golf a much more rewarding experience. Equally useful to both beginners and experienced golfers, this thoroughly well-researched mine of information, written by an industry authority, is a little gem of book. Golfers should not set foot on another golf course until they’ve read this!

Essex County News by Neil Silver, Press Officer, Essex Golf Union www.essexgolfunion.org email: info@essexgolfer.com
Another year has flown by and we are approaching the end of the season. All the finals have been played and the only two competitons left to play are the Essex Foursomes and The Mullis Trophy. The SE League Finals are also on the calendar, we are lucky this year that both the County Team and the Colts Team have reached the Finals, report to follow next month.
ROMFORD TROPHY
Taylor Carter.
It was a chilly September morning as 66 players set out to play the wellpresented Romford course. Leading after the morning round was Taylor Carter (Rochford Hundred) with an impressive gross score of 66, fellow Club member Mitchel Sarling was in second place with a gross 68. Taylor went on to score an amazing 65 in the afternoon and took the Romford Trophy with a score of 131 gross, 11 under par. A seven shot winning margin with no dropped shots over the 36 holes, an incredible score. Mitchel came in second place with 138 gross and Arthur Leonard also from Rochford Hundred came third with 141. Taylor also won the Handicap prize with a nett 135 and Alfie Buttle (Orsett) came in second with a nett 136.
UPMINSTER TROPHY The Upminster Trophies are played annually at Upminster Golf Club, the Upminster Bowl is for players who are under 25 and the Upminster Trophy is for players that are 25 years old and over. The Upminster course was in great condition, the weather was overcast but mild, as the 51 players set off to play the morning round. Upon the first round’s conclusion, Arthur Leonard (Rochford Hundred) was leading with a score of 69, three shots clear of the field. Arthur concreted his lead further in the afternoon by carding a 67, making his gross score 136 (-2) for the championship.Winning the Upminster Bowl (U25) by four shots over Jay Beisser (The Rayleigh Club) who also carded a fantastic 67 for a total of 140 (+2). A solid performance, which saw Jay take the 2015 OOM but not quite enough to take the final individual championship of the year. In third place was Ryan Tatton (Chelmsford) who recorded the best score of the day in the afternoon with a three under par 66, to finish on 145. The winner of the Upminster Trophy (Over 25) was Daniel Simmons (Upminster) with a gross 146 and runner up was Jamie Richards (Abridge) with a gross 147. Tony Ames (Romford) took third place with 152. Arthur Leonard also won the Handicap Prize with a nett 138 and Ryan Tatton (Chemsford) was runner-up with a nett 139. Arthur Leonard. - 40 -

ALLAN LOCKWOOD TROPHY The Semi-Finals and the Final of the Allan Lockwood Trophy were played at Boyce Hill Golf Club on Sunday 13 September 2015. This Trophy was put up by Allan Lockwood in 2002, when he was the President of the Essex Golf Union. It is a very popular competition with club golfers, as all levels of golfers can compete together in a prestigious County Event. 92 Competitors started out competing in the first knock-out round back in April, on a pleasant September day, we were down to the final four. Bernard Tucker (Langdon Hills) and George Leversuch played in the first match, and George won 3&2. The second match between Paul Springall (Benton Hall) and Bradley Hyde (Three Rivers) resulted in Paul Paul Springall. winning 2&1. The Final presented a really tight match, Paul and George were all square after regulation play. The match required only one extra hole, where Paul took the match and the Trophy.
ORDER OF MERIT The OOM table shows the points awarded for each of the qualifying OOM events this year and both Jay Beisser (The Rayleigh Club) and Callum Pipe (Braintree) had entered and played during the year. We arrived at the Upminster Trophy, the last OOM event of this year, with a 24 point gap between the two. Jay, coming in as runner-up with a score of 146, was awarded 20 points making him a clear winner. Jay had played in every Essex Golf Union’s OOM competition and two of the five Club OOM events this year, well done Jay for supporting our County Events and congratulations for finishing as OOM winner for 2015.

U14 JGT – GARON PARK
Harvey & Alan.
The final competition in the Tour for 2015 took place once again at Garon Park. A fairly strong wind greeted the early players and took it’s toll on many of the competitors scorecards. James Butler was in the second group out and a magnificent shot, four feet from the 3rd hole, earned him the Nearest the Pin prize for the day. The outright winner for the day was Charlie Dodds (Channels) with 5 over par score that no-one really got close to. He took the U13 prizes of both scratch and handicap. Lily May Humphreys (Channels) was slightly disappointed with her round but she easily won the Girls prizes both for Gross and Nett scores. The winner of the U14 was Harvey Payne (Chelmsford) with Joshua Gray (Garon Park) taking the Handicap prize. At the award ceremony following the Competition, the prizes for the Competitions held at Gosfield Lake, North Weald, Forrester Park and Langdon Hills were also presented. The main feature of the day and eagerly awaited by those in contention was the awarding of the Essex U14 Junior Golf Tour Order of Merit prizes for 2015. Prizes are given to the best four rounds from six played by the various age groups. A special prize is given to the best score for the U12 players that take part out of their age group. MENS COUNTY TEAM County v Hertfordshire With Essex already assured of a place in the SEG League Final. This was an opportunity to test the strength in depth of our County Team, with four changes to the team that has been unbeaten so far this year. The West Herts Course meandering through the tree lined Cassiobury Park was presented to the players in excellent condition. Essex held a narrow 2½ to 1½ lead at lunchtime thanks to excellent performances from Jay Beisser & Andy May prevailing 2up. Jordan Wallace & John Hanrahan producing a great fight back from 2 down to secure a half in the third match. The afternoon session began very much in favour of Essex with Mitch Sarling & Jay Beisser taking - 43 -

early leads. A spectacular eagle three from Jack Dyer on the 516 yard par 5 third giving him an early advantage, this was underpinned by the very consistent Taylor Carter who raced to a three up advantage after seven holes. However Hertfordshire’s back markers proved too strong for the Essex team and rallied to turn the tide and secure the afternoon advantage turning the match around in their favour. The match was in the balance until the last singles reached the last two holes with Andy May at 4 under par being edged out by Hertfordshire’s Laurie Owen with both players also narrowly missing eagle puts on the 18th. Essex now play Kent in the Daily Telegraph Salver Final at Broadstone Warren in Dorset on 4th October.
SENIORS COUNTY TEAM Seniors v Hertfordshire On a perfect day for golf Thorndon Park looked magnificent with the backdrop of the old Hall and the beautifully tended course. The match had little significance from the point of the League as Hertfordshire had already one that, nevertheless Essex were keen to win to prove a point. As the matches came to the 9th they were very even although Hertfordshire seemed to have their noses in front. As the match progressed the first pair were walking in Dougie Cameron the international having beaten Mark Lazurus with several holes remaining. Then new English International Mark Stones appeared on the 17th 1 down, his pitch to the green was magnificent and the resultant birdie tied the match and that was the way it stayed after the 18th. Then Keith Davies appeared having won 3 and 2. Ian Grant lost on the 17th green before but Geoff King managed to win his match on the 18th. Local boys Chris Philips and Ian Waller were narrowly beaten. On the plus side Mike Copping finished his match on the 16th green to secure a 3 and 2 victory. We were then left waiting for the final two matches if were to salvage anything Trevor Patmore went down the 18th to secure a halve but Chris Herrington was beaten leaving Hertfordshire the winners by 6 games to 4. In his speech after the match Team Manager John McInerney thanked Thorndon Park for their hospitality and wished Hertfordshire well in their final against the winners of the South Eastern Group (South) which we believe to be Hampshire. - 44 -

Essex had the lead before play commenced having beaten both Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire in the previous two rounds. Elliott Oxlade led the field out and won both of his matches as did Scott Hudson.Tom Barker won against Beds and Brandon Meade won against Herts. U16 TEAM U16 v Kent & Sussex The last match for the county’s U16 team was on Sunday 13 September against Sussex and Kent at Ham Manor Golf Club. It was a good day for golf and although overcast with a chill in the air the rain stayed away. The front nine holes of this interesting course meander through the exclusive Ham Manor Estate, whist the back nine are plotted across rural parkland. Yet again fielding a full strength team was a challenge with a number of absences due to a clash with England Regional coaching trials, but as always our under 15 players stepped up to the plate and performed admirably. In Capt’n Ben’s absence Alex English had the honour of leading the team on his last appearance for the under 16s.
Joe Defries.
Perhaps not the curtain call Alex would have planned as he found himself drawn against plus 2 handicapper Charlie Strickland playing on his home track. Whilst the final match result was a runaway victory for home team Sussex many of the individual games were closely fought and particular mention must go to Joe Defries and Harrison Linney both of whom were undefeated on the day. Over the course of our league matches against Surrey, Sussex and Kent every team beat every other team but the final points total resulted in Essex coming 2nd with a tally of 59 points. Surrey won the league with 73 points. Sussex Harrison Linney. 3rd with 55 and Kent with 53. - 46 -

U14 TEAM
U14 v Norfolk & Cambridgshire In this triangular match played on a very well prepared course at Thetford, the Essex boys retained the CEN trophy with some inspiring golf from all of the team. The highlight of the morning foursomes came from Josh Gray (Garon Park) and Greg Crawley (Stock Brook Manor) beating Norfolk 3&1. Also beating Cambridge 5&4 meant the team went in with a 3.5 - 1.5 lead over both other Counties. Led by Captain for the day Harvey Payne (Chelmsford) the team soon began to dominate the opposition, with Harvey recording wins of 8&7 against Norfolk and Cambridge 5&4.Harvey Sullivan (North Weald) also recorded two wins as did James Butler (Boyce Hill). Greg Crawley (Stock Brook Manor) won against Cambridge and halved the other. Whilst new boy Ralph Carroll (Chelmsford) had two resounding wins 9&8 (Cambridge) and 8&7 (Norfolk) most of this was down to his short game with an exceptional display of chipping and putting. The match finished with Essex first, Norfolk second and in third was Cambridge. This was our last County representative match and judging by some of the boys performances the future looks good for Essex. - 47 -

RESPECT THE ROUGH I
hate to state the obvious but before we know it Autumn will be upon us, which requires a variety of subtle course management changes. I have chosen to explain a few key points how to play a shot from a thick wet lie in the rough. Gone are the days of extra run on the fairways with minimal rough to act as a hazard, hitting the fairways now with the additional benefit of “winter rules” becomes a critical element of our scoring ability.
Here are a couple of non-technical pre- swing points to consider when playing from our wet winter rough. 1. Be practical and respect the rough and lie of the ball, don’t forget the Sand Wedge is one of the most versatile clubs in the bag and sometimes is the only option from a thick buried lie. I grade this type of lie (figure 1) as “red” using the 3 point traffic light system. There is also an increased risk of injury so take your medicine and get back in play.
- 48 -
The perfect place to practice Figure 1.
2. The grass can “grab” the hosel of the clubhead causing the club head to close and point left of your intended target. Be mindful of this and aim slightly further to the right to counter act this 3. Try to increase the grip pressure in the last three fingers of the left hand, to maintain a square clubface at impact, again preventing the clubface turning left at impact. 4. If faced with the “red” lie as shown above, place approximately 70% of weight on your left side at address possibly gripping down the handle a fraction, to help create a steeper backswing. Playing the ball position middle to back of the stance will help achieve a contact to extricate the ball to the fairway where you can take advantage of pick and place! If we are constantly missing the fairway with our driver why not consider your 3 wood which will ensure you don’t have to face this recovery shot. In heavy rough you are very likely to lose a shot so giving up a bit of distance to be on the fairway is the sensible option. ollowing the rain during the week, Crondon Park and Bentley could not have asked for better weather to play their Jubilee Cup semi-final at Colchester Golf Club. With both teams going through the group stages unbeaten we were in for a close match and that is what we got. Crondon’s Jubilee team captain was the first to put a point on the board winning 7&6 against Dave Lock, but this was quickly followed by Bentley wins by Steve Patterson, 5&4 and Ian

the overall match score 4-3 in their favour . With the Bentley’s David Norris and Robin Mitchell 4 up against Mark Willis and Mark Sinnott the focus turned to the middle match. Bentley’s Julian Leader and Richard Garlick were leading 2up with 3 to play only to see the Terry Laffar and John Sinclair of Crondon win the next two holes to draw level with one to play. With the final Pairs match finishing 2&1 to Bentley after a valiant fight back by the Crondon’s pair a playoff was now looking likely. With all the Players gathering around the 18th green to watch the last match complete, Bentley holed for the for Par while Crondon’s par putt just slid past giving the win to Bentley and an overall match result 5&4 to the Bentley. The Jubilee Cup Committee would like to thank Colchester G.C. for the hospitality and warm welcome and would reiterate the comments made by both teams captain’s in appreciation of the course.

16th. However Michael won the 17th giving him a 2 & 1 win and Colchester’s second. James Henderson (Benton Hall), after being all square on the first nine against Andy Higgleton (Colchester), had won 4 and halved one of the first six holes on the back nine. Andy won the 16th and hoped his luck had changed but a half on the 17th gave James his 2 & 1 win. The singles finished 4 –2 in favour of Benton Hall. The interest for the spectators now lay in the pairs. Nobody was leaving the congested area around the 16th and 17th greens. We could see the match in the distance but nobody was sure what the score was, only that this was the crucial match to follow. After 12 holes the Benton Hall pair of Keith Lovesy and Dave Curtis were firmly in charge, being 4 up. Dave Harper and Robin Tucker (Colchester) rallied marvellously and won four out of the next five holes, leaving the 17th green only one down. However that Benton Hall. was as far as they could go and the 18th was halved giving Keith and Dave a 1 up win. The captains agreed that the last two matches The 17th hole proved to be the nemesis for Benton Hall between Simon Smith/Chris Wilson most of the games. Kevin Kimber (Benton Hall) fought back from being 3 down at the turn but could not deny Geoff Lawrenson his 1 up win and Colchester’s first. Michael Mayes (Colchester) and Adrian Symonds (Benton Hall) had been having a nip and tuck game for 14 holes and when Michael won the 15th he must have thought he was home and dry. But Adrian was not Colchester. giving up without a fight and won the ith the cooperation of the Bentley Club we were able to start the match earlier than expected, but it soon gave us a problem as the swift advancement of the singles meant we caught up with other players already on the course. Jubilee Cup 2015 Order of Merit
Jubilee Cup 2016 Entry Update
The Finals will also see the Order of Merit for singles and pairs draw to a close, but this is far from a done deal as we stand currently. In the Pairs, Keith Lovesy from Benton Hall maintains his standing coming out of the Semi Finals with six out of six wins, but not very far behind at all is David Norris from Bentley, only half a point behind Keith. The singles is more of a complex affair given standings and the final match. Despite not making is through to the Finals, Brian English and Tony Efreme from Crondon currently top the roost and could win despite not being present for the last match of the season. That said, Alan Moore and Kevin Kimber from Benton Hall are only half a point behind so have everything to play for if they are picked for the team. Additionally, even Ray Nash from Bentley has an outside chance of gaining a trophy!
The Committee wish the Finalists and the Order of Merit contenders best of luck, and whilst I do that I can also confirm we have also started gathering in our 2016 contestants including a new team to the fold – wonderful news in receiving Clacton on Sea Golf Club already entered for 2016. anny Simmons a Upminster Golf Club member has recently won the Upminster Bowl over 25’s trophy for his club to add to his existing awards. Born in 1970 Danny has always been a keen golfer and has been a member of the club for 20 years. He has been club champion six times; 02, 04, 10, 11, 14 & 15 which no other golfer has achieved since 1961. In 2007 however Danny suffered a serious spinal injury which led to surgery. Doctors feared he may never play golf again. However, Danny adjusted his swing to accommodate his injury as he was determined to continue as an amateur golfer. As Danny fought his way back to the top, he won Upminster golf clubs most consistent golfer in 2010. Good luck to Danny with breaking more club records in the future.
Jonathan Hewett displaying his USGA Open Local Qualifying Winners Medal.
Jonathan’s Delight
I
t was of much interest to Clacton-on-Sea Golf Club members, when Clacton Golf Club member Jonathan Hewett brought his “United States Golf Association” Open Qualifier Winners medal to the club to show the club`s members. After finishing school at St Benedict’s in Colchester. Hewett was offered a place to study economics at De-Paul University in Chicago USA. A bonus to his studies is that he also plays golf for the University and for the 2015-16 season Hewett will captain the side playing against other universities all over America. Hewett was entered along with 10,000 other golfers into the 2015 USGA Open. In the first round of qualifying, 105 clubs from Maine to Hawaii host The Locals as they are known. Hewett played at Flossmoor Golf Club and against odds of over 110-1 Hewett won the Local with a score of 67. Hewett then progressed to play in the Sectionals, where top tour professionals outside to the world top 50 get to play. Hewett played at “The Bears Club” in Florida along with 88 other hopefuls, looking to win one of the 4 spots in the Open. Former World No 1 Luke Donald took one of those spots in this 36 hole match. Hewett played well, but a triple bogey at one hole finished his chances of making the US Open. However, Hewett has the consolation of knowing that he is one of very few Englishmen ever to have won a USGA Local Qualifier Winners Medal. - 57 -

Great Week For Jason J
ason Nicholls stamped his authority on Colchester Golf Club last week when he completed a unique double, winning both the Thorogood Scratch Trophy and the final of the Ian McLean Putter. Nicholls who joined the club earlier in the year has been gradually making his mark in club competitions over the summer and with these two victories has now firmly established himself as the one to beat. He had a two-shot margin over second placed Dom Petch, who also plays off scratch. Nicholls’ only blemish in his gross 69 was a bogey at the par three fourth hole, but birdies on the ninth and twelfth corrected that and a straight par finish was more than enough to secure the trophy. Not the Petch did not try, but he bogeyed three of the last four holes interrupted with a birdie on the 17th. This quashed any thoughts he had of victory. Lorrie Austin took third spot with a gross 73 and with this score, he also secured the Seniors Scratch Cup. John Dornan’s 74 was enough to secure him fourth place with Adam Lock’s 75 taking fifth. The top eight players in the Club Championship go on to play in a knockout for the Ian McLean Putter. Nicholls had won through by beating Alan Macnaught in the semi-final to play Jake Farson who had beaten John Logan in the other semi-final. In the final, Nicholls soon showed his experience and authority, and early birdies on the second and third holes put him in control. He went three up
with another birdie on the eighth, and it was clear that Farson would find it difficult to claw his way back into the match. It ended on the 15th with the final score 4&3.
