eb Outar is the Playgolf Colchester Senior Champion for 2020 following a great round of golf producing a gross 75 score which included a birdie 2 on the 3rd earning him a sleeve of balls and another birdie on the par 4 15th, he also racked up 9 pars, 5 on the front 9 and 4 more on the homeward stretch including both par 5’s. It was a day for the form book with the top five players having a maximum handicap of 15.3 between them, however playing of off a 12 handicap Deb’s resulting nett score of 63 was one of the lowest this year. The honours are shared on Championship day and a superb nett 67 from Keith Pike which included 3 pars gave him the a place at the top of the nett leader board, Bernard Keyes and Eric Hames were placed 2nd and 3rd with nett 70’s.
laygolf Ladies Club Championship Competition was played over 2 days and 36 holes. A fantastic score of 95 gross on Day 1 gave Ann Longman a 1 shot lead over her nearest contender, Nicky Withycombe (96). Gina Macmillan and Sally Pettitt followed 3 more shots off the pace each recording 99. Day 2 saw a comeback effort from Withycombe (88) putting her in first place for the day after Longman slipped slightly down the leaderboard repeating her Round 1 score of 95 The final result was a massive 6 shot victory for Withycombe (pictured) as her combined score of 184 for the Championship gave her the top spot on the podium over Longman (190). Gina Macmillan’s 2nd round score of 98 combined with the previous day’s 99 put her in 3rd place on 197 just pushing Sally Pettitt (198) into fourth place by a single shot. Sue Wotton was awarded the Championship Nett Prize with a score of 140 over the two days earning a handicap reduction of 2.

This year was tough for those who took part as the weather conditions were stifling. The Ladies Club Champion was Chloe Arthur. The winner of the Silver Championship Jamie Davenport. he Stoke by Nayland Ladies Spring Meeting trophies were competed for in scorching sunshine in August in this strangest of years. However, the trophies were fought for in the normal Stoke by Nayland ladies feisty style, played on the Gainsborough Course in the traditional medal format. Corinne Jackson played immaculately not putting a foot, or even a ball wrong, and led the 34 strong entry field Both division winners are in the photo above. olne Valley Golf Club Ladies captain Pearl Powell was crowned club ladies champion after a nail-biting four-hole play-off. This followed a two-day energy-sapping competition in sweltering conditions which had left Pearl and last year's champion Helen Venis tied on a score of gross 175 after 36 gruelling holes. Fourteen-handicapper Pearl held her nerve in the extra holes to beat 11-handicapper Helen by two shots. Both had carded a gross 87 on day one, when young Hannah Kane, who plays off 19, scooped first-day honours with the best net handicap score of 71. Pearl and Helen also tied with 88 gross on day two, when Hannah went on to become net
champion with a total net 143, just one shot over par. The best net score on day two was a stunning net 68, three under par, by Jan Edwards, who plays off a 20 handicap.

ou may have experienced when you hit a good shot that you hold finish and admire your shot? Conversely when you hit a bad one you look away in disgust. So it makes sense that putting your attention on making a good finish, if we make a good finish, we are helping our chances of making a good impact, which happens milliseconds earlier, the bonus from holding your finish is that you also put your attention in the shot and your brain gets maximum learning from each shot as well. You want the finish position to look athletic and balanced. What you usually see in players that have difficulty in making good contact is the opposite. TRY THIS EXERCISE: • Hold your finish till the ball is on the ground. On your next round commit to this no matter where the shot goes. It sounds simply but can be very hard to actually do. - observe your shot and see of you can get maximum learning from each shot. -8-

BRAINTREE PUTTING MEMBERS’ INTERESTS FIRST
T
he coronavirus epidemic has dominated life this summer not least with regard to golf. Around the country Golf Clubs were closed initially for almost two months but, thankfully, life has returned to something like normality albeit with certain restrictions. At Braintree Golf Club a Covid-19 Committee was appointed earlier this year to take the club forward and has been putting members’ interests first. Although play is a little regimented with tee times having to be booked in advance, arguably there has been an increased demand for golf possibly because foreign holidays are out for many this year. As a result of the earlier lockdown, when not a shot was struck for over six weeks, Braintree took the bold decision to offer its members a two months discount on their membership. The club is now flourishing with 85 new members having
joined since the lockdown was lifted in mid-May. Members, particularly the seniors, have been volunteering as starters and course marshals, ensuring players adhere to the new rules and restrictions. While the clubhouse has been ‘out of bounds’ for social events, a marquee has been erected alongside for members to relax before and after their rounds and to partake of refreshments ordered from and delivered by the resourceful and friendly catering staff. The club is also partaking in the Government’s ‘Eat out to help out’ £10 off voucher scheme this August. Braintree Golf Club has been very proactive in its handling of this unprecedented pandemic and is reaping the benefits. “We are embracing the ‘new normal’ as this is likely to be with is for some time,” says General Manager Matt Bowman.

laygolf Colchester was the venue for the final of the Mizuno Golf Pairs East NE. The Playgolf Ladies pairing of Captain Paula Smith and 2019 Captain Lucy Sadler, the only female team in the competition, earned their place by winning through their three previous rounds. In exceptionally windy conditions they took on the other semi-finalists, Robert Wicks and John Wilkinson from the Royal Norwich Golf Club. BEN WINS THE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP
CORINNES WINTER WONDER

toke by Nayland Golf Club Ladies, Corinne Jackson and Hilary Cairns picked up where they left off before lockdown to complete the Finals of the Winter League 9 hole competition. In complete contrast to the last rounds they played in mid February, they had a glorious summers day with plenty of roll on the ball as the ground was dry and much firmer. They played the front 9 holes of the Gainsborough course, Hilary got off to a good start winning the first hole, Corinne managed to pull back winning the next two holes with a birdie on the third to go 1 up, the next few holes saw the ladies have a battle until they we’re all square on the 8th tee. The last two holes Corinne managed to par, giving her a 2 up win on the 9th hole making her this year’s winner of the 9 hole Winter League competition. The game was played in good spirit with Barbara Jones refereeing.

en Jewell is Five Lakes Club Champion carding rounds of gross 71 and 78 (149) on both the Links and Lakes courses, Ben also won the Handicap Trophy with a nett 137 just beating Patrick McSweeney on countback with a better back 6 with the same net score. Patrick, coming second in both the gross and handicap with a gross 72 and 79 (151) nett 137, third place in the gross competition was Thomas Vass returning a gross 156, Ian Cottee claimed third place in the Handicap competition with a net 142 just beating Dave Morris on countback with on the same score. - 12 -

YOUNG AMBASSADORS: HELP US FIND WINNER OF NEXT 'HERO'S HANDSHAKE' SUPPORTED BY ENGLAND GOLF AND THE GOLF FOUNDATION
T
he award recognises young people in golf who show commitment and dedication to the game and who help support others by promoting a positive image of the sport. It is not about winning trophies, but rather a way of thanking those individuals who champion the game. It rewards those golfers who display a positive attitude and generosity of spirit when helping others celebrate even the smallest of achievements. Nominations for future awards can be made via the Young Ambassadors social media channels on Twitter and Instagram. To contact the Young Ambassadors via Twitter search for @GolfAmbassadors and discover them on Instagram at ‘getgolfing’. “Now we need the help of club professionals and golf club members to help us identify the next group of heroes.” The Young Ambassadors – a group of dedicated young people aged between 12 and 21 – have so far made virtual awards to four winners in 2020. In April, Toby Heath from Northampton Golf Club was stunned to receive recognition from his peers for the work he did in running online bingo nights for 70 people as he helped relieve the problems of social isolation during lockdown. Will Beddington from Sandiways Golf Club was the winner of the award in May after his fundraising exploits in auctioning off a signed Tommy Fleetwood hat helped raise money for the NHS. On top of that, Will’s home challenges helped friends get involved in fun activities while golf courses were closed.
The third winner of the year was Emilia Lynsdale from Horsham Golf Club. Emilia was a positive force during lockdown in keeping fellow golf club members entertained and providing them with off course challenges. Sam Dunkley – playing out of Kingsthorpe Golf Club - is the most recent winner. Sam has shown great courage and determination whilst battling leukaemia and on his recent return to golf shot a nett 60. During his break from the game, Sam never lost his love for golf and was eager to get back on the course. The Hero’s Handshake started in 2019 and there are six awards made every year. Due to the Covid-19 outbreak, awards for 2020 have been made via social media rather than at a golf club presentation ceremony. To nominate an outstanding young person who deserves to be recognised for their positive promotion of golf then please get in touch with the Young Ambassadors via their social media channels detailed above.

June 2020 brought the launch of the EPM’s Junior Aspire Academy at South Essex Golf Club. The Founders of Elite Performance Management, Emily Perry and Paul Holland have launched this Academy for boys and girls aged 8 – 21 years aspiring to improve their golf and/or have a career in golf. The Programme incorporates Performance, Mindset and Technical Coaching and all Aspire Academy members receive a membership to South Essex Golf Club. NEW HALL SCHOOL STUDENTS EXCEL FREDDIE WINS OF THE WARREN GOLF MEN’S CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP
O
n the first day I was obviously excited but just had in my mind you stay focused and play my game and I would know I’ve got a good shot at winning this championship. I didn’t get off to a good start with two good tee shots which both led to bogeys. I stood on the 3rd with a 30 footer for birdie and I was thinking 2 putt and get on to the next, I ended up holing the putt and that gave me the kickstart to the round. As the round went on, I had some tough breaks on the course but my mind still stayed positive. When I approached 15 I was 5 back with 22 holes to go, I made a fantastic par save on 15 to keep me going for the round which led to me making birdie on 16 and 18 to finish the round and to be 2 back heading into the second day. I was looking for a quick start in the second round to minimise the lead, I noticed the leader slipped back a couple of shots. I finished the front 9 not with the score I was after, however, I knew a good finish could give me a chance at the title, Standing on 12 and only 4 back and I hit a tee shot that I thought was lost and at that point I thought I was out of it and it was game over, I found my ball and hit a amazing shot to somehow find the green and make a par. With pars till 16 I was still 4 back with 3 holes to play. I hit a great drive down 16 and made an up and down on the par 5 to keep myself in it. I made par on 17 of which the leader bogeyed so I was 2 back with 1 to

play. Both of us pushed our tee shots right on 18 both having to pitch out and having a wedge in. I hit my shot to about 50 feet and the leader put it in the bunker and then splashed out to 10 feet. I thought in my head the only chance I have now is me 2 putting and him 3 putting. There was about 40 people watching and I somehow holed a huge putt and the leader missed and I won on count back. Just shows never give up and you are never out of it until the final hole has finished,”

omford Golf club Men’s Club championship won by Henry Styles with a fantastic score of 69 (2 under par) This recent win tops of a great summer of golf with previous success in the Essex boys Amateur Championship with a runner up finish and also another Runner up finish in the Romford Trophy. Henry has now been cut to 1.9 handicap which is a fantastic achievement at the age of only 14. Henry Styles.

ince lockdown was lifted from all Golf Clubs in May, Stoke by Nayland has seen an incredibly busy summer with members, guests and visitors who were desperate to escape their homes and get back into the swing on these two stunning 18 hole championship courses in the Dedham Vale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The lovely weather was a bonus of course. corching temperatures failed to deter the forty four golfers who turned up to contest the Seniors "Tribly Challenge" played at Playgolf Colchester.This was the first Trophy competition played since lockdown and due to the Covid 19 restrictions the competition was played as a Stableford with no top four play off as in recent times. There were some excellent scores posted, with seventeen players recording Par or better, one of these was Brian Hart who helped his score along with a fifteen foot putt on the 3rd to record the days only 2. Peter Evans a former captain was a very popular winner playing off a 25 handicap, he posted an early score of 42 points which was not matched, Michael Johnson gave his all falling just short with a very creditable 40 points, followed by four other players posting 39 points. Thanks are due the the Playgolf staff including the greenkeepers and Terry Pettitt, Seniors
Captain for making sure conditions were met to enable the competition to take place, which is hopefully a blueprint for future tournaments.

oung Pip Stringer from Braintree Golf Club swept all before her to win Colne Valley Golf Club's Junior Open. Playing off the women's red tees, she amassed 42 stableford points to beat 83 of the best junior players from Essex, Hertfordshire and Suffolk. olne Valley Golf Club’s senior Iain Gwyther has achieved a six million-toone chance by scoring an Albatross hole in one. Only days after returning to playing golf after the coronavirus lockdown was eased, he hit his 275-yard wonder shot on the club's par-four seventh hole. His tee-shot double-eagle achievement was witnessed by his playing partner and later shared by emailing fellow club members. The usual custom of buying everyone in the clubhouse a celebratory drink had to be postponed indefinitely because of Government restrictions on clubhouse use. The National Hole-in-One Registry says that the odds of a PGA Tour player making a hole in one are 3,000-to-one. The average golfer has a 12,000-to-one chance. Meanwhile, the Double Eagle Club says the odds of an albatross are six million-to-one.

he Pat Smith Memorial Trophy was played on 4th March at Forrester Park Golf Club. Pat was a captain and committee member and his family donated the Memorial Trophy. Pat's wife, Jill and his daughter Phillipa attend each year to present the prizes to the winner. This year Steve Barraclough won with a remarkable 41 Stableford points playing off a handicap of 9. Along with the present captain, Ian Smith, some of Pat's old pals entertained Jill and Phillipa.

att Black scooped the main prize of the week at Colchester Golf Club with a victory in the Walk-on-Stableford. Black, known for putting in the hours honing his game, and playing off eight, mast-headed his round of 41 points with a birdie on the always difficult sixth hole to reach the turn just one over par. On the back nine, dropping shots against par on the par threes, saw him home with a strong enough finish to get the nod over Stephen Moore (13) after the countback. Moore, who had averaged par on the par-threes, doubled the par four tenth to put himself on the back foot when it came to the countback. Alex Bailey (11) returned 40 points to secure third place. Four players returning 39 points, Iain Cruickshank (9), Ronnie Wilson (9), and the father and son combo of Richard (6) and Guy Haines (16). - 22 -
EDWARD QUALIFIES FOR THE CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS

en year old Edward Reeves from Colne Valley Golf Club has won a European Junior Golf Tour competition to qualify for next year's Champion of Champions event in Ireland. In the two-day qualifier at prestigious Goodwood Golf Club in Sussex, Edward won both day one and day two, was winner overall in his age group and topped a golden performance by being nearest the pin. Playing off his 25 handicap, he scored 41 gross for nine holes on day one and 39 on day two. World-class British golfers of the calibre of Tommy Fleetwood and Tyrrell Hatton have emerged from the ranks of the junior tour since its foundation in 2000. Another Colne Valley junior, 11-year-old Bailee Taylor, has also impressed in a British Junior Golf Tour event, finishing runner-up overall in his age group. The 12-handicapper scored 84 and 88 gross in very windy conditions at Portal Golf Club in Cheshire. Both Edward and Bailee are products of the Coastal Golf Academy based at various golf clubs in north Essex including Colne Valley. PGA professional Scott Rusbridge, who teaches with the academy, said: "Our juniors are really flying the flag for Colne Valley. Well done to both Edward and Bailee."

AUTUMNAL GREENS FROM SPEEDY SUMMER GREENS G
olf is one of the very few all year round sports where we are constantly faced with a variety of conditions and external factors during each round. The challenge is to gradually build upon your skill levels building a “ full tool box” to cope with each new situation. As long as we have an understanding we are learning which is all we can ask. I always say to my clients “Golf is a journey of life long learning which I believe is the ultimate attraction” So here we are with a few months putting on carpets and through kitchen rolls to fast Summer greens now we are plunged into Autumn golf so here are a few pointers which I hope will assist you. We will all be experiencing very different putting surfaces with possibly windy conditions so let’s firstly widen your base and tilt a little more forwards at address so your eyes are parallel with the ground. This wider base will assist with your stability with the goal to prevent swaying the lower body back and forth. One key point to remember is to ensure the tempo of your putting stroke remains as consistent as it can whatever the speed of the green. The additional “power” required to accommodate the green speed comes from the length of stroke and
possible right wrist hinge but please don’t try to increase the “speed” or “hit” at the point of impact. This action can throw out your rhythm and quite possibly where the ball is struck on the putter face which will cause distance control issues. Some players change to a heavier or a winter putter, one with a “firmer” face composition without a “soft” insert, there maybe an idea for dare I say it your Christmas list! Enjoy your golf and I would love to hear how you are getting on.

BRITISH GOLF SHOW DOUBLES IN SIZE, MOVES TO MAY 2021

igh Wycombe, Bucks, UK - The second British Golf Show has been re-scheduled for 14-15 May 2021, and will double in size to become the largest exhibition to date in the organisers’ eightyear history. The 2020 event’s originally-scheduled date of May was switched to early October when the pandemic hit, but a lack of clarity as to what will / will not be permitted as regards public gatherings next month has left exhibition organisers The Elite Luxury Events with no choice but to postpone. As the British Golf Show’s exhibition space was already fully-sold for the 2020 event, the 2021 British Golf Show will now take place across two Golf Halls at Wycombe Air Park to allow for extra exhibitors and public attractions. Extra capacity at Wycombe Air Park has been secured to make the expansion possible. As originally planned the 2021 British Golf Show will take place alongside the long-running The Elite London luxury lifestyle exhibition, which also switches to the May 2021 dates. All current golf exhibitors have been personally contacted, and the Elite sales team are now taking bookings for the enlarged 2021 event. “With ongoing uncertainty about COVID-19, there simply isn’t time now for our exhibitors to prepare for a golf show in early October” said Alex Ayling, Managing Director of The Elite Luxury Events. “This gives us more time to build additional attractions into the event, and to make it an unforgettable day out for anyone with a love of golf. ocal Five Lakes member Jack Garnett, who plays off of a +1 handicap has won the Romford Trophy. This is a very prestigious competition that features many of the best amateur golfers in Essex and had a strong field of 72 entrants. Whilst golf courses have been open since the 3rd May, the Essex Golf Union have been unable to run its normal calendar of individual and team events. So the Romford Trophy was keenly anticipated, following hot on the heels of the Essex Amateur on Aug 30, where Jack finished a very commendable 5th. This was a 36 hole competition and after the morning round Jack was in the lead after shooting a tidy 68, 3 under par. It got tenser in the afternoon and after 14 holes he was one over for the round with some ground to make up. He then birdied 15, 17 and 18 to come home in 69, winning the trophy by one shot.

ello everyone – long time no speak! It is hard to think that the last time I submitted a report to the great Essex Golfer, was to appear in the March 2020 edition. Who knew! Also sad to think that, as I write, last weekend would have been seeing our Semi Finals played for the 2020 Jubilee Cup, and by the time you are reading this we would already have crowned our 2020 Champion - I may be biased, but pretty sure it was going to be Notleys Golf Club. However, I hope we still find you well, and enjoying what golf you can get access to currently. I thought I would also update you as to what is happening moving forward and transitioned to the 2021 competition. THE COMMITTEE’S DECISION IS AS BELOW •
JC 2020 is fully null and void, and will be a gap in our history; that draw and any results (from matches played in 2020) being cancelled

Any club who was drawn in the 2020 Competition will be automatically enrolled in the JC 2021 comp and draw – I will not be refunding any club who does not want to compete in 2021 (we do have annual financial outgoings)

JC 2021 will be open to additional clubs, who had until the normal submission close date to provide cheque and form as normal (by 30/09/2020) - currently one club availed themselves of this opportunity

JC 2021 will be drawn in line with what Stoke by Nayland GC, and Competition Chairman Phil Redhead at the 2019. The 2020 competition will be won was agreed at the last AGM by “Covid-19”, but we will return for a 2021 competition. – AGM will be subject to whatever is allowed from social distancing perspective at the time – This may include doing the Draw via virtual session over Zoom etc., with Committee ensuring there is transparency and fairness as usual – All this subject to English & Essex Golf Unions being in position to allow such inter-club games, plus local course rulings (I am hopefulthings may have eased by March 2021 for this perspective)

BURSTEAD LADIES PLAY THE RYDER CUP
T
he 2020 Ryder Cup may have been cancelled for the professional golfers this year but the Ladies at The Burstead Golf Club were determined not to miss out and organised their own version of the fantastic competition this year. Complying with social distancing regulations, 32 ladies made up Team USA and Team Europe, all dressed appropriately in red or blue to play a 27 hole competition. Sue Norris and Louise Milne managed the teams Boris’s Babes and Donald’s Dollies and whipped up support with flags and bunting and a great deal of humour. The two teams competed over 27 holes - 9 holes Foursomes, 9 holes Better Ball and 9 holes Singles, all matchplay, to replicate the professional formats. Using Ryder Cup scoring, USA took a slim lead after the Foursomes with a 1-point lead and the teams were largely level after the better ball phase. Europe tried to fight back in the singles but USA took a triumphant win with the last three matches and USA won by 3 points. This will definitely appear as a regular fixture in the Ladies schedule for years to come! - 27 -

ow I have missed these little articles. I really hope you are all keeping well and staying safe. The world of golf has changed somewhat, I am sure you all spent a period of time craving the game and wanting desperately to play, I do hope you are getting to enjoy some rounds of golf now before the bad weather comes and the winter hits. In this article I am going to discuss how we get back into playing golf after lockdown. It was a long period of time and it will not be uncommon for a lot of you to be “FEELING” going back to golf. For example, feeling muscles you have not used for a while or maybe worse little niggles because the body has got out of the routine of playing golf. Be respectful of your body, its been a while, remember that the golf swing is very dynamic and if you have spent lockdown being very sedentary then approach playing with caution, start off hitting some balls at your local range, to then playing just a few holes and building it up from there! As always I highly recommend stretching and mobilising the body especially after lockdown. Something I am a huge fan of is mobilisations.
Mobilising with tools such as a foam roller, a lacrosse ball and if we are being really specific a massage gun. So if i could recommend you do anything after coming out of lockdown and back to golf is to get up to scratch with your mobilisations. Get yourself a foam roller and a lacrosse ball off of amazon (I will pop pictures below) and then if you head over to youtube you will find some awesome self help videos on how to use the foam roller and the lacrosse ball to mobilise for golf. Typing into the search “foam roller mobilisations for lower body” or “mobilisations with a lacrosse ball”, you can even specific this search to golf. I highly recommend the lacrosse ball to get in around the shoulders and the upper back! Fingers crossed to some normality soon, get stuck in on the mobilisations and I look forward to writing more articles over the coming months.

SHARROCKS AND HATLEY, CHAMPIONS AT COLCHESTER GOLF CLUB
T
he Club Championship played over two rounds is limited to 40 players and the title now sits firmly on Sharrocks’ shoulders. Runner up in last year’s championship after losing in a play-off Sharrocks enjoyed a déjà vu moment when after the two rounds three players were tied to force another play-off. Sharrocks was joined by Brian Mathews and Mark Smith all scoring 146. There had been no moves by any of these three in the morning’s round. The leader at lunch was Joe Jackson underlining his win in last week’s Cooper Bland with an impressive gross 70. Mark Smith was the closest with a 72, but both Mathews and Sharrocks had tough morning rounds with scores of 74 each. Seventy-four was a score matched by Micah Blowers Jnr, Lewis Barber and John Dornan with John Logan and Jack Newell sneaking between them into joint third place with 73s. As the day warmed up so did the golf. Jackson could not repeat his morning heroics and recorded 77 to put him in joint 4th place overall. Barber and Blowers joined him along with Ed Mason who had a superb round of 70 in the afternoon to give them all a 147 total. Mathews and Sharrocks were neck and neck in the afternoon both shot 72s with Smith shooting 74 to complete the trio at the top, forcing the play-off.
All three players parred the first play-off hole but it was Sharrocks who shot the birdie on the second play-off hole, the 18th, to win and become Colchester’s Champion Golfer of the Year for 2020. The Ladies Championship was not as close. Hatley had an excellent round in the morning scoring 76, three over par. Her nearest challenger, Romy Bozier, was six shots further back and although Hatley returned an eighty-three in the afternoon Bozier’s eighty-four put her one shot further adrift. Good handicap golf, but these Championships are gross scoring and unforgiving in that regard. Hatley sealing her win with a 159 total and securing her second Championship in a row. Back to handicapped golf; the ladies ran a support Stableford alongside their Championship which was won with a score of 37 points by Fiona Prentice(20). She was followed in by Margaret Dearnley(27) and Jane Lochore(23) both scoring 33 points. Caroline Slagle(26), Sue Patrick(32) and Katie Cooper(20) all returned 32 to tie up the minor placings. Sam Jackson(8), not to be outdone by his twinbrother Joe, rattled in 42 points in the Walk-onStableford. His gross two over par round settled all arguments in the competition with thirteen handicapper Simon Rippingale being his closest challenger with an impressive 41.

GOLFING GIRLS IN THE SWING

ince our return to coaching a few months ago now, the stipulated group size of 5 adults is still in force but that has not deterred the Golfing Girls. The smaller group size allows for more individualistic 1-2-1 coaching with plenty of interaction which is after all one of the attractions or benefits of the game. I think we can tend to become drawn too much upon the technical elements with limited focus upon the reasons why people start and continue to play the game. It is this retention which is a huge focal point within my delivery and coaching. I hold my Golfing Girl sessions at Three Rivers Golf & Country Club on a weekly basis which can be booked directly using my contact details below. Golfing Girl is one of the longest and most established coaching and development groups in the UK started solely by myself with no external funding.

SBN CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS / AJB CUP

aturday the 29th of August saw SbN club championship and AJB cup qualifiers take place on the par 71 Gainsborough course with the finals on the par 72 Constable course on Sunday the 30th - on a dry but very windy day some excellent gross scores were posted at the end of the first days qualifier with only 2 shots separating the top four players of Matthew Tunstall and Ian Carter both (Gross 73 ) with Matthew Eaves and
Matthew Wyatt close behind on gross 75. With the final two groups going out last on the Sunday its was once again Ian Carter who pulled away from the field with a super 2 under par 70 to win his 5th SbN club championship with a combined score of 143 - 2nd was Matthew Eaves with a combined score of 150 and third was Scott Brace with 154 with AJB cup being won by Ryan lock who posted a combined net score of 139.

They won with 46 points off a competition handicap of 10 - this represents a par score round the Gainsborough course. The win was the result of a 40 foot back to front putt on the 17th green for a birdie. WHAT A YEAR TO IMPROVE YOUR GOLF!

hoah! Did I just say that? Absolutely I did. Amid these bizarre times there is no doubting that golfers have made use of the fine weather, time on their hands (and working from home and furlough, no doubt) to get out on the course. Green fees have shot through the roof at many clubs although please don’t think clubs are ‘out of the woods’, financially yet, with huge losses incurred in revenue for catering, events and hiring’s, but more of that later. So, while you’re out there on the course, make use of every opportunity and in this edition of Essex Golfer a quick tip on improving your putting! Why do we have gimme's in this game? You wouldn't watch a football match and instead of the ball crossing the line, 'to save time, pick it up’. You'd not watch a cricket match and with a ball hurtling towards the boundary say to the opposing team 'Great shot, I'll stop the ball but you can have four runs'! So why, when it comes to golf do I see gimme's... when the rules of golf say that the ball must be holed? (I totally accept a Match Play situation where your opponent or yourself has the right to concede a putt). It saves time, golfers tell me. If a ball is literally on the edge of the hole then knock it in, pick it up and move on... But all of a sudden, that 'gimme' is about 2 foot away... and have you noticed, when you DON'T give the putt... time is taken (quite rightly) to mark and line up the putt, a practise stroke maybe... surely if it was a 'gimme' then just knock it in? So if you want to be a BETTER putter ... start knocking EVERY putt in.
downhill putt, with a little movement from right to left... what will be going through your mind? Manage your expectations! Most amateurs do not expect to hole a 25 foot putt. There's no reason why you can't hole it but it's ‘generally’ not expected. All you hope for is to leave it somewhere near the hole for a tap-in. As that putt becomes 8 foot or even 3 foot, then the expectation rises that you will hole it. No one (generally) gets mad at missing a 25 foot putt, but watch what happens when you miss a short putt... and how often does that play on your mind when you are taking the next tee shot? If you've practised short putts time and time again then your confidence, belief and probability of holing that next crucial putt goes up massively! Let me know how well it goes? A message for Golf Clubs. Well done for getting this far into the year, with your heads above water. The lost revenue since March in terms of events, weddings, parties, wakes, catering etc. cannot sadly be recovered. But what you can do is plan for future income. ESSEX BOYS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2020 Burnham on Crouch Golf Club – 29th July
A
fter months of waiting the County tournament season finally got underway on 29 July with the Boys Championships taking place at a sunny and breezy Burnham on Crouch Golf Club. With Covid local rules and distancing measures in place this created an interesting experience for players, officials and the County organisers, but it’s fair to reflect that overall it all went pretty well. The player for whom it all went particularly well was Thorndon Park youngster Max Porteous who with a magnificent two under par morning round of 68 put a good deal of separation between himself and the rest of the field. Seven strokes better than his handicap his round containing seven birdies and he was doubtless left wondering how good his score might have been had he avoided the double bogey on the way out and three other bogies on the return journey. At the lunch adjournment his nearest rival three strokes adrift was Upminsters’ Owen Fallows with a one over par round of 71, but again highly creditable when matched against his seven handicap. Max Porteous. The afternoon conditions continued to be challenging with any strokes wide of the fairway standing a good chance of finding some very penal rough. Henry Styles from Romford proved to be the master of the post lunch session and was able to match Max Porteous’s morning round of 68 with four birdies and only two bogies. Max however was in very a determined frame of mind and his afternoon round of 71 was still good enough to hold off Henry, his nearest contender. With a gross score of 139, one stroke better than the CSS Max was a worthy winner of both the under 18 and under 16 Championships with Henry Styles Runner-Up in both categories a further four strokes adrift on 143. Inevitably the team competition became a shootout between Thorndon Park and Romford with the former emerging as winners with a score of +7 against Romford’s +10. (The county website shows the Thorndon Park score as +3, which due to a programme fault is incorrect). Whilst congratulations go to Max for his outstanding performance, there were equally outstanding performances from the Essex Golf Union and Burnham on Crouch Golf Club for putting in place arrangements to get this Championship off the ground in very difficult circumstances. Final thanks go to the Burnham members who added some atmosphere to the event by cheering to competitors home from the clubhouse balcony. Max Porteous with EGU President Brian Collins.

SIR MICHAEL BONALLACK TROPHY & COLTS CHAMPIONSHIP Thorpe Hall Golf Club – Monday 17th August 2020
N
ormally contested in May the Sir Michael Bonallack & Colts Championship was the County’s second championship of this Covid affected season. As always it took place on Sir Michael’s long time home track at Thorpe Hall Golf Club, which was in excellent condition. As is becoming an increasingly common feature the championship entry was dominated by the county’s younger players who had the good fortune of avoiding torrential downpours that engulfed nearby postcodes. Playing the back nine first Lewis Wright was swiftly into his work reeling off five birdies on the way out although his progress was hindered by a couple of bogies particularly one on the short and relatively simple 13th. Despite three birdies his return to the clubhouse was again spoilt by a couple of bogies, nevertheless a round of 67 against a par of 71 was a more than respectable morning’s work. With an opening offering of 69 Dylan Hussey will have been more than happy with his morning offering, however a nasty double bogey on the 12th, which proved to be the day’s most troublesome hole, will have been a significant irritation. At the lunch break Harley Smith was off the pace and will doubtless have been disappointed with what for him was an ordinary morning round of 72. Three bogies and only two birdies was not a fair reflection of this young man’s talent. So on to the afternoon when as always the fun really begins. After four holes which including a birdie and eagle Lewis was 7 under par and looking comfortable, but a bogey at five followed

by doubles at eight and nine took him back to two under. Harley kicked off his front nine with three bogies and two birdies and got to the turn at 2 over par for the day, whilst Dylan matched a pair of birdies with bogies and also turned Tale of the race to the tape. at two under on the day. Birdies from Harley Smith at ten and eleven meant that when Lewis and Dylan bogied the 12th he was one off the lead with seven holes to play, then his birdie at the 16th meant the three of them were tied up at -1 for the day. So it became a two hole championship between these three young men and with Lewis Wright birdieing the 18th and in the clubhouse on 140 it was left to Harley Smith in the final group to at least equal that birdie and force a play-off, however his missed birdie putt on the 18th green left eighteen year old Lewis Wright, the elder statesman of this trio, as winner of both the Sir Michael Bonallack & Colts Championships. 89TH ESSEX AMATEUR GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP Three Rivers Golf & Country Club – Sunday 30th August

he county's premier event The Essex County Championship is normally played over 72 holes, but due to these exceptional circumstances this year's event was an abridged 36 hole version played over the par 72 Kings Course at County President Brian Collins' home golf club in Cold Norton. Starting their morning rounds from the 10th the Orsett pair of Zac Chegwidden and Callum Newton both set off with birdies and by adding a further two én route Callum completed his outward nine in a highly satisfactory 32 strokes. Zac however had the misfortune of matching his three outward birdies with bogies and turned level. Elsewhere William Horne and Brandon Meads were having a little more difficulty with their outward nine holes, however with both birdieing the 1st and 3rd measure of respectability was injected into their rounds, despite both having later bogies. Callum started his home run in the best possible way with an eagle at the 1st at which point his round was five under however a double at six followed by a birdie at seven balanced by a bogie at - 35 -

eight saw him back for lunch with a three under par score of 69 and leading the field. Having completed his morning round with a score of two over par and back in 14th place Brandon Meads started his afternoon round with some blistering golf and five birdies in his outward nine put a smile on his face as he turned for home three under and leading the field. A further birdie at the 10th took him to -4 and a clean card to the clubhouse gave him the lead on 140 strokes. The absence of on-course scoreboards removes, or certainly reduces an element of tension from these tournaments, but retrospectively it is easy to see that after 17 holes anyone of four players could have been crowned champion. Three birdies for William Horne on the inward journey put him at -4 and but for an over-hit approach shot on the 18th that cost him a bogie he would certainly have forced a play-off. Such are the margins at this level. Having had an indifferent outward nine a timely eagle from Zac Chegwidden at the 14th certainly improved his chances of winning, but he was unable to better par over his final four Brandon Meads. holes. For Callum Newton it was most definitely a case of what might have been as no one bettered his eight birdies and eagle for the day, but two doubles and a dreaded snowman took the shine of his morning performance and in particular the double on his final hole of the day pretty much put an end to his chance of being crowned champion. These are of course “what might have beens” and the truth is that Brandon Mead's excellent afternoon round and in particular his front nine were critical in enabling him to emerge as the Essex County Champion golfer for 2020 and retain the title he won last year, with the Jubilee Trophy awarded to the best score from a player under 21 going to the ever improving William Horne and Callum Newton as runner-up. With Zac and Callum both in the top four finishers the Esplen Team Trophy inevitably went to Orsett who with a four under par score of 284 finish ten strokes ahead of their nearest rivals Ben Humphrey and Shay McQueen from Chelmsford Golf Club. 2020 ESSEX UNDER 14’S CHAMPIONSHIP Maylands Golf Club
T
he Essex Under 14 Championship returned once again to Maylands Golf Club despite the best efforts of the weather. The course was in good condition and stood up well to the heavy early morning rain and high winds that greeted the players and county officials. The Under 14’s Championship is played as a gross score stroke play competition over 18 holes, and the Fred Stillwell trophy is presented for the best nett score. Play commenced at 9.00am for the field of 49 players, 8 of whom were playing off handicaps of 5 or less. The early pace was set by William Bailey (Warley Park) with a 3 over par 74, a net 68 off his 6 handicap. Edward Linley (Romford) also a 6 handicapper then submitted a gross 73, the new leader in the clubhouse with only nine players still out on the course. His nett score of 67 equalled that of James Hallett (Burnham on Crouch). Dylan Hussey (Romford) soon matched Edward’s score of 73, just pipping Edward on countback and in so doing taking over the mantle of clubhouse leader. In the final group to finish both Henry Styles (Romford) and Charlie Croker (Thorndon Park) both had good scores to submit. Henry had a three over par 74, and Charlie returned an exceptional 2 under par 69. Good enough to take this year’s championship by a clear 4 strokes and be crowned the 2020 Essex Under 14 Champion. Congratulations Charlie! His 3 handicap gave Charlie a nett 66 result, which also gave him the Stillwell Trophy as the best nett score of the day, one ahead of both Edward Linley and James Hallett. Our thanks go to Maylands Golf Club, Maylands Golf Club staff and their members for hosting the event and offering their course for the day. We would also like to thank Steve Lowly, Immediate Past Captain of Maylands Golf Club for his assistance on the day. WHS EXPLAINED IN A NUTSHELL
A
head of the impending introduction of the World Handicap System, this article is a very brief outline of what to expect. On 2nd November 2020 the new World Handicap System will go live in the UK. The new system makes use of Course and Slope Ratings, which will have been completed for most clubs by November of this year. A Course Rating is the score a ‘scratch’ player is expected achieve in normal playing conditions. Courses are also rated for a ‘bogey’ golfer (a player with a handicap of 20 for men and 24 for ladies). It is the difference between the two ratings that produces the Slope Rating. In November your CONGU handicap will be converted to a WHS Handicap Index. It is your Handicap Index that will be important going forward. Your Handicap Index will be calculated by averaging the best 8 of your most recent 20 scores. It will be adjusted to reflect a handicap benchmarked to a Slope Rating of 113. Why 113? - it just happens to be the rating that has been assigned to the, statistically perfect, average course. To put this in to context, the average rating for courses in Essex is around 128. From November onwards each Club will display a conversion table showing the handicap applicable for each course (and tee position) for the different Handicap Indexes. On arrival at the course simply look up your Handicap Index to establish the Course Handicap that you will use for that round. After completing a competitive round of golf, you will need to enter your score to the software system before midnight on the day of your game. Your Handicap Index will then be revised overnight and be available to view the following morning. Each competitive round of golf will update your most recent 20 scores from which the average of the best 8 will be taken. The new system has been designed to accurately reflect your current playing ability by averaging the best 8 of your most recent scores. However, the accuracy of your handicap is dependent on the returns you make. Those submitting relatively few scores to their playing record will find that their Handicap Index is unlikely to reflect their current ability and may be based on scores stretching back a number of years. In addition, it is worth noting that, the allocation of, and adjustment to, your Handicap Index is more penal if you have relatively few scores recorded. - 38 -

MICHAEL R SPALL (14th July 1942 - 9th April 2020)
I
t is with great sadness to report that during the Covid pandemic Essex Golf lost one of its great servants. Michael Spall served Essex Golf for 33 years as a member of the Executive/Board, Team Manager and President. Having been admitted to Princess Alexander Hospital in Harlow Mike was recovering from severe bronchitis, when the day before his release suffered a fatal relapse. Mike joined Royal Epping Forest Golf Club in 1964 where he served with distinction as both Captain (1973) and President (1993-97) having originally been introduced to golf there as a 12 year old caddie. Together with John Peters Mike managed the Essex Colts team who were consistently the EGSEG Champions producing some exciting talent which went on to receive National Honours. When in 2009 he stepped up to manage the County Team they won the EGSEG 6 Man Team Qualifier at Aldeburgh, going on to win the England Golf National County Finals at Chipping Sodbury GC and become English Champions. As President of the Essex Golf Union through 2011 and 2012 Mike carried out his responsibilities in the most affable style. Prior to taking office he suffered a minor stroke, but did not let this deter him although subsequent surgery for heart valve replacement and motorbike accident did eventually slow him down and limit his public appearances. On completion of his term of Presidency he became manager of the Seniors Team and stayed with that team in various roles until his death. Mike was a genial man who motivated players and fellow team officials through his effervescent light hearted enthusiasm and knowledge. He was not afraid to make difficult selection decision and commanded the respect of all his players. He was most generous as well, paying for a number of County team players to have private coaching when their performances were suffering, as well as helping them with their expenses on private trips to his property in South Africa where his membership at Southbroom Golf Club in KwaZulu, Natal enabled them to join him for a "Winter Warmer" annual golf trip. In February 2017 Mike was predeceased by his wife Stella with whom he had two children. As a surveyor the County Union also benefitted from his professional skills with renting our County Offices in Barrack Square Chelmsford and later the purchasing and modification of our current facility in Witham in 2000 behind which he was the driving force. Away from golf Mike had for many years also been a long serving, highly respected and very active Rotarian having joined the Chingford club when his own club at Waltham Abbey was disbanded 13 years ago. He was in fact due to be their President for the year beginning 1st July 2020. Mike was respected by all who knew him and will be very much missed. RIP Mike Spall. - 39 -

ESSEX SENIORS CHAMPIONSHIP Chelmsford Golf Club – 26th & 27th August 2020

he re-arranged 2020 Seniors Championship was hosted by Chelmsford Golf Club who welcomed 66 seniors from around the county to compete over the two days. The course was in excellent condition with little sign of the low rainfall over the preceding months and the greens were running quick and true. A strong wind was blowing on day one, presenting a stiff challenge to the players. Few players managed to post anything around the par of 68 but Mark Lazarus (Romford) set the early target with a very creditable 71. As half the field had completed their round Keith Robinson (Chelmsford) and then Keith Davies (Chelmsford) also submitted scores of 71. This remained the leading position until the grouping of defending Champion Ian Moore (Romford), Paul Knight (Wanstead) and Mike Partridge (Thorndon Park) submitted scores of 70, 72, and 69 respectively. So as the wind started to abate in the evening of day one Mike Partridge held a slender lead to take into day two. On day two the course proved just as challenging to the players, the wind had dropped but rain would arrive soon after the start of play to make it an uncomfortable afternoon for many. Mark Lazarus was one of the first of the challengers to complete his round, a 74, to give a 145 total for everyone else to aim at. Bobby Platts (Thorpe Hall) submitted a score of 72, which proved to be one of the best in the second round, but a poor first round meant the leader in the clubhouse was not yet challenged. Mike Partridge Chelmsford Golf Club Vice Captain Peter managed a 74 on day two to squeeze into a narrow Holt, 2020 Seniors Champion Paul lead on 143, just too good for Ian Moore this year, as Knight & EGU President Brian Collins. his 75 gave him a two round total of 145, the hat-trick of wins was not to be. Paul Knight was one of the few leading players to improve on their first round score, submitting a very good 71 (the best on day two), for a 143 total to match Mike Partridge. As ties are resolved on count back in this event, Paul’s 72 -71 proved decisive, and he was declared the 2020 Essex Seniors Champion. In the handicap categories prizes are presented to those who did not feature in the gross prizes. The over 55’s winner was Nick Taylor (Chigwell), with a total of 137, playing off his 9 handicap. The over 60’s winner was Richard Higgins (Stock Brook Manor), with a nett score of 140 from his handicap of 9. For the over 65’s Laurie Baker (Chelmsford) made use of his local knowledge to take the honours with a score of 139 with his handicap of 5. In the Over 70’s, Ray Rantell (Chelmsford) playing off his 8 handicap, managed a narrow victory with his nett 146 total. Our thanks to the Board of Chelmsford Golf Club for their assistance in re-scheduling this event, to the whole Chelmsford team in presenting the course in superb condition, and also helping to ensure everything was done to deliver a smooth and successful championship. Looking forward to next year, the 2021 championship returns to Bentley GC in early July. - 40 -

fter months of pandemic inspired “no golf ”, the members and visitors of Notleys Golf Club have certainly been making up for lost ground – the course has been busy all through the summer and only now returning to normal, with an increased membership also. Yours truly ,and (doubles) Partner in Crime, Kev Whybrew, were opening up the club gates first thing on the first day back, 13th May, and teeing off as the sun arose at 5am – keen as mustard, and confronted with a lovely dawn as you can see here spilling over the 18th Green!
Sadly this good news was tinged with some sadness as we lost a couple of well-known and beloved members in long-standing Treasurer David Lodge, and member Keith Mills. Both have been memorialised in new annual competitions, with local businessmen (and future Captain potential!) Liam Gleeson taking the David Lodge Trophy in early August, with 41 points. Then a big congratulations to the Inaugural winner of the Keith Mills Trophy over the bank holiday weekend - 30 handicapper Jim Walker, who even managed to surprise himself into winning with a further fantastic 41 points (when he thought he had 39!). The competition was also quite memorable as it saw chicken-fried David Bojko securing his first Hole in One on the 15th hole, (followed by a generous round of drinks for us all at the bar) - a true gent! “Boj” is seen here plucking his ball from the hole, in the presence of our great "country-member" Miguel Angel Jimenez (or “Frank” as he goes by when playing incognito at The Notleys!) Things gathering apace here at Notleys, and we are all looking forward to a socially distanced Club Championships being played across two consecutive weekends - news of that next edition! Regards

THE TRUTH IS REALLY OUT THERE

his not about aliens (although during lockdown we probably all found ourselves watching some dodgy TV channel we did not know even existed with a guy who swears he was abducted by aliens when he popped to his local shops). It really is, and it’s been around since golf began. Great players have always done it, it’s rarely spoken about but has never gone away and for many they are led to believe it doesn’t really matter that much. So what is it? Simple - find the middle of the club face. Want to be more consistent? Strike the ball in the middle of the face. Want more distance? Strike the ball in the middle of the face. If I’m honest I probably talk about this too much but it really is that important, there are loads of complicated things that happen when we hit a golf ball, all I can say is that it gets a lot easier if the ball finds the middle of the face. Putts, chip shots, irons
and woods all benefit greatly from finding the middle of the face. This does not always mean a swing ‘rebuild’ (which is almost impossible in itself ) but perhaps you have the ball in the wrong place at address - it really could be that simple! If this is something you struggle to do get some help, it may be your equipment, it may be your swing but get to the bottom of it and I promise you will play better golf. It’s been a crazy year, golf went from total shutdown to probably the most popular it’s been for decades which is truly great to see but now that momentum needs to keep going and in my opinion for that to happen golfers need to enjoy their golf, not participate in four hours frustration. So let’s keep it simple and start with the absolute basic fundamental of finding the middle of the club face. Keep well & keep safe.

he Notleys Golf Club Seniors collected just over £2000 for their Captain’s Charity, the Childline section of the NSPCC. The cheque was handed over to Sarah Lafling of the NSPCC by the Seniors Captain, Andy Smith, who is a volunteer for the Charity. In the picture Andy is flanked by some members of the Senior section and Sarah. The money was raised on Andy’s Captains Day earlier in the year and from other activities over the past year.
