CAROL SETS THE PACE arol Watts set the pace in the ladies stableford last week at Colchester Golf Club. CScoring 25 points she was one of forty-three ladies who braved the weather to play in this fourteen hole competition. Her 29 handicap safely protected her from the chasing pack led by Pat Kettle. Kettle playing off 17 handicap was the leader of three players all registering 24 points and placed after a countback. Included in this group were Annie Johnston (15) and Helen Lofthouse (50). Taking fifth spot was twenty-five handicapper Gilly Cullen who scored 23 points from the fourteen holes. The Braiswick Club hosted one of Essex PGA’s winter series of Pro/Low Amateur events with Jason Levermore coming in with an impressive 67, one ahead of best amateur Harry Wood from Boyce Hill, and two ahead of Ben David. Levermore from Little Channels Golf Club, and part of the GB and Ireland team of 2015 who won the PGA Cup in America for the first time, had a steady one over par front nine, before launching into an amazing back nine of 30, 4 under par, finishing the round off with three successive birdies. In contrast to Levermore, Wood went off like a train – posting an outward nine of 33. However, apart from a two on the par three 13th hole, the birdies began to dry up, and with a costly bogey on the last, he fell agonisingly short of the experienced Levermore. Ben David, a former member at Colchester Golf Club and now playing on the MENA Tour but still attached to Colchester came in with a solid 69, with two birdies on each nine, to finish two behind Levermore.

CHARITY GOLF DAY FOR THE CHILDREN AND FAMILIES AT GREAT ORMOND STREET HOSPITAL rganised by retired greyhound trainer Maurice Newman, his first charity golf day O took place on Wednesday 9 October at the Stapleford Abbotts Golf Club in Romford, but he faced an early problem. “The guest of honour was former World boxing champion John Conteh, but he phoned me in the morning to say his car wouldn’t start,” explained 84-year-old Maurice. “A lot of celebrities wouldn't have bothered, but John got an Uber from Watford and came all the way here. He was brilliant all day, playing golf, meeting everyone, organising the auction and even did some sparring on the day - what a great man.” Over 60 people from all walks of life came along for the golf day as well as the auction and over £7,000 was raised for Great Ormond Street Hospital. The money raised went to Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity Never Far Away: Essex Appeal. The appeal enables the charity to provide free accommodation close to the hospital for patients and families from Essex and across the UK. “It was funny because John said to me it was more like a wedding reception than a charity do. Everyone seemed to know each other” said Maurice. “It was the first time I have done a golf day and I was a bit apprehensive about it, but it was brilliant.” Conteh himself said: “I've known Maurice for years and I take my hat off to his tireless support for this incredible cause. “It was a pleasure to raise so much money for Great Ormond Street and I thank the Stapleford Abbotts, organisers and of course donors for putting it all together and their generosity.” Maurice has been raising cash for the cause since the early 1970s, following in the footsteps of his father Phil after his sister Olivia had been in Great Ormond Street Hospital just after the war. He has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds over the years and he intends to carry on doing it. Jacob Gilder, Head of VIP from bookmaker SportNation.bet, one of the businesses to enter a
team on the day, donated a VIP hospitality package at Cheltenham which was the top bid auction item on the day. He said: “We are proud to support Great Ormond Street and look forward to welcoming the very generous bidder to Cheltenham with us.” Alex Donohue, director of Alex Donohue PR, one of the event organisers commented: “Maurice has been raising funds for this incredible charity since most of us were in nappies, or even longer ago than that, and his relentless drive to support GOSH is inspiring.” TV presenter Rachel Casey was the host on the day and did a fine job interviewing the various players and celebrities. “It was a fabulous day,” said Maurice. “I was there at 7am and didn't leave until 5pm, but it all went so quickly. The first time the Kent links has been present in such rankings for 35 years, the re-entries come as a direct result of the extensive works carried out across the 27-hole property by course architects Mackenzie and Ebert over the past two years. “We’re delighted that the quality work across all three nine holes has been recognised by both these rankings” said Rob McGuirk, General Manager at Prince’s. “To enter the National Club Golfer rankings at no.81 is testament to the vision of Martin Ebert and the hard work of our greens staff, headed by Sean McLean.” Prince’s also entered the recently updated Great
Britain & Ireland Top 100 – with a combination of the Shore and Dunes nines – at no.99 on rankings website top100golfcourses.com. Phase one of the redevelopment work undertaken by Mackenzie and Ebert was the redesign of the Himalayas nine, which was completed in spring 2018. Since then, significant works have been completed on both the Shore and Dunes nines, with the official unveiling of the new-look layout planned for spring 2020. The significant move in the GB&I courses rankings follows recent success in English listings, where the club moved up ten places with Golf World magazine to no.49, and more recently both Shore/Dunes (no.45) and Himalayas (no.99) were included in the Top 100 Golf Courses in England rankings on top100golfcourses.com.

SUFFOLK GOLF CLUB REACHES FINAL OF THE GOLF ENVIRONMENT AWARDS 2020 bird, bee and bug-friendly golf club has been shortlisted in a prestigious award scheme A celebrating the best in the industry. Ufford Park Hotel, Golf and Spa has reached the finals of the Golf Environment Awards, which is celebrating its 25th Anniversary. The Operation Pollinator Award recognises golf clubs across the country who consistently deliver the outstanding creation and management of ecological habitats. Managing director, Tarnia Robertson said: “To have been named a finalist in this category for the second time in three years is a fantastic achievement. “Our dedicated team of greenkeepers work hard to be as environmentally friendly as possible. The golf course is teaming with wildlife thanks to the bird boxes, bee hives and bug hotel that have been built to provide a habitat for nature. We have also built a reservoir for irrigation and we only use
organic feeds to feed our greens to minimise the use of chemicals. “Since being awarded runner up in 2018, the golf team have taken the judges feedback on board and I’m very proud of the hotel’s achievements. “We hope this time we will take the crown!” The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on Wednesday 22nd January 2020 at The Crown Hotel in Harrogate.
THE McPARTLIN TROPHY

chool golfers from Essex, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Middlesex assembled at Bushs Hill Park Golf Club to play in the McPartlin Trophy. George McPartlin was a founder member of Wingland Schools Golf and the trophy was originally presented to the top county in the country to encourage new young golfers to stay and play.
The weather looked set to be poor with a possible storm warning, but after all players had teed off the rain ceased, and the rest of the days weather was fair. Unfortunately not fair enough
for Essex to bring home the trophy. The 6 boys and 3 girls with handicaps varying from 15 to 32 came from 6 different clubs and 7 schools. Ages ranged from 10 to 15. The team played some good golf especially James McCarthy of Southend High School for Boys with 41pts and Ralph Barker-Smith of Gosfield Independant with 40pts. The rest of the team was Piers Wiechmann,Daisy Eves, Edward Reeves, Daniel Mountford, Fiona Hardy, Joey Takayama and Katie Davies. Results: Middlesex – 260, Bedfordshire – 259, Hertfordshire – 255, Essex – 241 This year 53 schools and nearly 200 students have been represented in 3 competitions.The Schools Scratch Championship, Team Championship and the Handicap Competition, winners of which go on to further competitions. DAVID & NEIL WIN ROUND THREE he new partnership of Dave Morris and Neil Whitelaw (13.5) claimed first place in the T December round of this year's Winter League at Five Lakes Golf Club on Sunday 1st December with a nett score of 56.5 on the par 71Links course. Second place went to Liam Boyd and Thomas Vass (14) with a nett score of 57, third place went to Neil Shinwell and Lee Stafford (13.5) with a nett score of 57.5. They were closely followed by two pairs with nett 58's James Adams and Tom Arrowsmith and Stuart Hempstead and Billy Millar.

His round was built around the turn where he had four pars, and then finished off with pars on the 17th and 18th putting him in an almost unassailable position. Almost, because right on this tail was Matt Michael (9) on 43 points. Michael had a brilliant birdie blitz around the turn carding four birdies in six holes to give him a gross of 72. Also adapting superbly well to the receptive greens was Josh Coleman who holed out on the 9th hole with that rare bird, an eagle. His three shots on the par five combined with a level par total for the other 17 holes gave him by far the best gross of the day with a 68. In a competition which saw 109 players squeezed into the limited daylight hours it was no surprise to see some of the later starting groups struggling to finish despite the weather on the day being perfect for autumnal golf. Stuart Fisher (13) returned 40 points to take fourth spot and Keith Newnham (5) who along with Robert Svensson (14) had 39 points to complete the leader-board.

harlie Allison took the top prize in Colchester Golf Club’s 2019 Junior Open. CFourteen year old Allison playing off 13 handicap sealed his win with a par beating round of 69 nett from his thirteen handicap. No mean feat bearing in mind last week’s rain made the fairways soft and the tees were back making the course play long. A clash of half-terms this year meant juniors from Suffolk based clubs were not able to attend which accounted for the reduced entries, nevertheless in light of the conditions standards were high and juniors from twenty one clubs competed. Second placed in the overall competition was Benton Hall’s Dominic Hoskin playing off 4 with a nett of 70. There were four other competitors on a score of nett 70. Of them Colchester’s Arian Masud (3) was placed third, with the top girl in the competition, Alanna Mathews (11), placed fourth.
She was followed in by Max Day (14) and finally Sid Neenan (6) from Felixstowe Ferry who completed the group. Under fourteen winner was Mathews with Bentley Golf Club’s Alfie Dorrington (19) second on 72. In the under 16 division Hoskin was awarded first place after a countback with Day taking second place. The Under 18 Division was also decided after a countback between two five handicappers with Ollie Allison getting the nod over Colne Valley’s Dan Wallace, both returning nett 73s. Nearest the pins were won by Mason Barmingham from Colne Valley on the 4th, Epping’s Harry Finn on the 8th. Sam Gemmell from The Warren took the 13th and Colchester’s Ollie Baker was nearest on the 16th. Lowest gross of the day was Masud’s 73. All-in-all a good day, played in excellent weather and well organised by Mike Kettle and Junior Organiser Clive Mason.
CAPTAINS DRIVE IN AT COLNE VALLEY olne Valley Golf Club's new captains for the coming year took a bow at the annual C Captain versus Vice-Captain competition. Men's captain Phil Reeve and ladies' captain Pearl Powell both set the ball rolling by launching the contest with the captains' drive-in. They have taken the reins from retiring men's captain Paul Neale and ladies' captain Celia Larkham, who putted out at the end of their tenure. The result of the four-ball better-ball Hambro matchplay format was an 11-hole win for the vice-captains' team led by Graham and Sue Drysdale.
Nearest the pin winners were George Castle, Brian Amos and Bruce Critchley for the men, and Sue Drysdale (twice) and Lynne Southgate for the women. COMBAT BACK PAIN W
inter or when the weather is bad is the perfect time and opportunity to “fix” any injuries or back pain. Winter should always be the time you, a golfer, should spend more time in the gym so you are ready and in good form for the next season! Back pain affects a very high percentage of golfers, professional or not, old or young, back pain should not be restricting your game and there really is no need for it. A good specific flexibility programme and golf conditioning programme will eradicate pain and improve your game. I find through assessment that most golfers need postural work, core stability and more balanced flexibility ... not just flexibility, I find the main problem with lack of flexibility is when it’s not equal. The right side is much tighter than the left or visa versa, or even worse the upper body is tight on the right and lower body left ... this puts the body under huge amounts of stress ... then you add a sport like golf and the body breaks down. It’s very important when stretching that you stretch the tighter side twice to the once on the not so tight side.
Below is one of my favourite exercises to improve posture, stability in the back by strengthening the multifidus, the transverse abdominis, internal obliques and general function ... on all 4’s, relax the back and shoulders, draw the belly button to the spine and use the pelvic floor, then lift 1 hand and the opposite knee 1cm off the floor ... no more that 1 cm, keep the body as still as possible and keep the movement very small! Hold for 20 seconds then swap sides and repeat 6-8 times. Do this daily for 2 weeks to see a real improvement.

Lighter & More Flexible Shafts Do Not Always Equal More Speed ne thing I hear quite a lot is when golfers of a certain age believe that it is time to change their O shafts to something that is lighter and more flexible. I suppose on paper this would make sense as a lighter shaft would mean you can swing faster and the flexibility will give more ‘whip’ at the ball. Problem here is that the shaft of the club does not work in this way, in fact for many a lighter or softer shaft will actually reduce speed! When we swing (in general but not every golfer) the shaft will bend forward on the downswing but it can only bend so much before it starts to bend backward, this can equal a slower swing speed. With regards to shaft weight a lot of speed is dependant on where the golfer ‘releases’ the club on the downswing, (loses their wrist cock) so the weight of the shaft needs to work in conjunction with this. In the examples below you can see the difference in speed between a light & ‘whippy’ shaft (FX140 M2) and a firmer heavier one (FX160 M4). This test was done by the same golfer on the same day. For the ‘techies’ out there I’m sure you will notice some other elements in the charts that have effected the distance but let’s keep it simple and just look at the club speed - 3 - 4mph more! In the fitting world that’s a Gold Star! In fact it goes to prove that sometimes common sense goes out the window.

HOW TO STRUCTURE YOUR PRACTICE? e are extremely lucky in the UK to have W exceptional coaches at our call, with all golfers being able to get great information when it comes to our swings. However I still see many people practicing poorly at the range. I see two different types of golfers on the driving range, you have those who want to learn and beat golf balls doing a drill and those who just want to hit golf balls slinging their driver around thinking they are practicing. Player A is the drill master and player B the driver slinger. Are you a player A or a Player B? and who do you think will improve quicker? If the truth be told they are both doing something correct here but will both struggle to develop on the course. REASON WHY? Player A the drill master will improve technically as they continue to do drills however if you only ever practice a drill when it comes to the course you will forget how to swing properly and become far too technical on the course, as you have only ever practiced a drill. Player B will never improve technically and will always be capped at a level of ability, but will at least be able to swing their swing on the course, even if that dreaded slice sneaks in. When to comes to practice we should do a mixture or drill swings and full (trusting) swings. WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT COMPONENTS TO PRACTISE AND HOW SHOULD YOU PRACTICE TECHNICAL: 50% OF YOUR BALLS RANDOM: 25% OF YOUR BALLS TESTING: 25% OF YOUR BALLS TECHNICAL This type of practice is completing a drill or positional awareness of a certain part of your swing that your coach has given you. When doing this deep technical practice, you will always make mistakes or mishit the ball. This is completely normally and a necessity for improvement so don’t worry if it’s not
perfect you are still learning. When doing technical practice do not worry too much about what the ball is doing and keep your focus on developing the new movement. RANDOM This is full speed swings designed to get your brain to think a little more about being on the course. Random practice is exactly as it sounds, change clubs, change targets and even change shot types. When completing your random practice, firstly select a target and a club. Ensure you do the drill (as above) for your practice swing prior to your shot, then complete a full speed practice swing, select your start line and execute the shot focusing more on the target. We should now be far more aware of the target and shot rather than the how we do it. I see too many players becoming caught up in their technical swings on the course. TESTING A test at the end of your practice is designed to put you under pressure. The same pressure that you feel on the course, “get comfortable being uncomfortable” is a common statement of many elite performers. Count out 15 balls and depending on your ability give yourself 1, 2 or 3 lives. Select two targets that are an acceptable distance apart for a fairway. Try to hit your balls through your selected fairway. If you miss your target you don’t loose your life straight away.You have a chance to redeem yourself. Select another ball from a different pile of balls from your original 15, use a club that is a back up to your driver EG 5 wood or hybrid. Then try to hit that club through your fairway, if you hit the fairway with your safety shot you don’t loose the life. If you miss both your drive and your redemption shot, you will lose the life. Try to complete all 15 balls to without losing all your lives. Record your score and try to beat it the next time you go. NEW CAPTAIN JOHN WAS ON TOP FORM tock Brook Manor enjoyed another beautiful day for the third and last of the S Captain’s Drive Ins - Rob Steele and Shelley Edkins (Club Captain and Ladies Captain) having had great days for theirs on Sunday and Tuesday respectively. Bill Thorpe carried out his final duty as outgoing Seniors Captain by draining his 11 inch putt into the back of the cup - leaving our new Captain, John Hibbert to drive off his new year in style. He was on top form putting his 7iron 137 yards down the 10th fairway. Next was the driver ... which he smashed 210 yards straight down the middle - a shot anyone would be proud of at the best of times, but this one was under the pressure of scores of onlookers all wishing him a great start to his term. Three 9-hole competitions followed on Stock, Brook & Manor - all individual Stableford. On Stock, our new Club Captain Rob Steele smashed the field, scoring a tremendous 21 points, with Richard Higgins in second place managing a mere 16 points making Rob’s win seem even better! Meanwhile on Brook, Peter Jepson won with 19 points, beating Peter Griggs into second with 18 points. On Manor, one of our newest members, David O’Sullivan scored a very steady 18 points, beating Graham Crawley into second, also on 18 points and losing on countback. The nearest-the-pin winners were Mike Smith, Chris Quested and David Argent on the three respective courses. A warming meal was followed by John’s acceptance speech as the new Seniors Captain, and then a presentation from John’s chosen charity - MacMillan Cancer Support for whom around £700 was raised during John’s first day at the helm.

n a cold,breezy but bright day at the Essex Golf and Country Club, 32 Seniors O played a 4 ball betterball competition on the final game of our Senior’s Captain John Tuffens year in charge. In second place on countback was the team of Glenn Swift and Roy Whittaker with an excellent score of 41 Stableford points. The winning pair with an incredible 43 points was 12 handicapper Robin Reeve and 31 handicapper Richard Watson. Nearest the pin on the par three 11th hole was Roger Farson.

olchester Golf Club’s ladies’ captain Janet Austin held a one-off team stableford competition over fourteen holes, with three ladies to a team and the best two scores on each hole to count. Romping home with fifty-seven points were the team of Wendy Smith, Sheena Nunny and Katie Cooper. Their score putting them two points clear of three teams all registering fifty-five points. After the countback it was the team of Sue Patrick, Jasmine Schwier and Jenny Jardine who were able to claim second spot and bragging rights from Philippa Deman, Heather Denis and Linda Freeman who were placed third. Losing out and placed a more than credible fourth spot from over twenty teams competing were Gill Crayston, Marilyn Wood and Gilly Cullen. Janet Austin also took the opportunity to present trophies to the various winners with

The fun theme for the day was “Teddy Bears picnic.” 50 ladies attended the Drive In all dressed in Teddy Bear costumes, Lady Captain as Paddington Bear. A 9 hole competition started and ended in very wet conditions but the ladies battled through. Nearest the Drive winner on the 1st tee Shelia Clarke. LEARN TO PUTT LIKE A TOURNAMENT PROFESSIONAL - PART 2 ast month I discussed Green Reading and this month I am going to focus on Posture as it’s L the frame that massively helps the Putting stroke. In my opinion, each person has a unique putting stroke and that’s down to many factors of your body (Forearm angle, Spine and leg length), including how your eyes see the line of the Putt. These all add up to your Putting Stroke. The problem that all people face is; What is my best posture? Well, each person will either be an Upper body person or Lower body person. These 2 postures which are shown in the pictures beneath, will mean the arms will be in different positions.
LOWER BODY PERSON - In set-up position, support for the Putting Stroke comes from thighs and buttocks. Arms are hanging and spine angle is down to how the eyes see the line of the Putt. UPPER BODY PERSON - In set-up position, support for the Putting Stroke comes from the shoulders. Elbows are brought up to touch the
Torso and spine angle is down to how the eyes see the line of the Putt. If people are not set in the posture that’s best suited for them, they will struggle to see the line of the Putt and also, without the support of your frame. This in turn affects the Putting Stroke, which then puts pressure on performance. People are told to put their eyes over the line of the Putt, but I can categorically confirm this is not correct for all. This is down to the fact that people’s eyes see things in different ways and the fact that you can either be left or right eye dominant makes it even more interesting. Quintic Ball Roll also helps to give the individual the understanding that no human eye can ever do in determining the exactness within your stroke to identify the issues that are affecting your results. Better posture is proven to improve aspects of your Putting stroke without even initially making any subsequent changes to it. INCREASING YOUR DRIVER DISTANCE
lmost every player I see wants to increase the distance they hit the ball off of the tee. It has been the same since I started coaching, so nothing changes does it? The ability to hit the ball hard comes naturally to some and not naturally to others for the others there are a few tips that might help you gain a few yards. When I was young we used heavy clubs (clubs with lead in them) to improve our speed now you can buy something that helps. 1. Speed Sticks which seem to be working for a lot of players, I think these are worth looking at. And are probably the only purchasable thing on my list. 2. Increasing the length of the left thumb down the shaft increases the ability to create lag so this is one thing I would definitely try as lag = speed generally. 3. Increase width of stance, this allows you to have a wider base to turn in an is generally more athletic it also helps with the swing sequence when the next two points are put in the mix. 4. Increase the hip turn, this increase in hip turn takes some of the torsion pressure from the lower back when the next point comes in, and also helps the sequence. 5. Increase shoulder turn, this is the big one because if you increase the shoulder turn 1015 degrees this has a time value and gives you more time to keep increasing the speed into the ball.
It is also why the hips have to increase the turn too so that the time values of the sequence match up. And in causes less stress on the lower back You do not want the hips miles in front of the shoulder turn on the downswing. You may say that many players hips are in front by a lot on the tv such as Rory but many of these golfers have to stall the hip rotation through impact so that the arm can catch up. Sequence and length of swing are the keys to easy distance if the efficiency is there. CAPTAINS DRIVE IN & TURKEY TROT 'Clive Weir is Five Lakes new Captain' live joined Five Lakes 5 years ago when he retired at the age of 54. Clive is married with C two children and two grandchildren. He is a fullon grandad who loves spending time looking after his grandchildren. Clive was a junior member of Manifold Golf Club in 1977, Manifold became Quietwaters and then ultimately Five Lakes. He gave up golf when his daughters were born and didn’t pick up a golf club for 13 years. He now loves spending as much time playing as his grand parenting duties allow. Before the drive-in witnessed by a large group of members the golf club held their annual Turkey Trot competition. This was won by 10 handicapper Malcolm Pitt with a magnificent 44 Stableford points, second place went to Tom Arrowsmith (6) a point behind with 43 points, four players all returned 38 points with Andy Lee (11) claiming the third place on countback.Vouchers were also won by Malcolm Pook (7), Tony Nunn (21) and Kevin Bradshaw (15) all on the same score.

DIANA’S DRIVE IN n Thursday 7th November the Ladies Section of Stoke by Nayland Golf Club O held their AGM, where Jane Golding took over as the New Lady Captain from Diana Harris. After the meeting the New Lady’s Captain had her Drive in, watched on by the ladies to much applause, as the New Captain and Past Lady Captains hit their balls straight down the fairway of the Gainsborough Course first hole. The ladies then followed on playing a 9 Hole Greensomes competition, half on the front 9 holes and half on the back 9. After the game the ladies returned to the clubhouse for the New Ladies Captain to present the prizes. SCADE EXCITED BY CRONDON PARK CHALLENGE
ames Scade has high hopes for his association with Crondon Park Golf Club – the Essex J venue where he has just taken on his first PGA head professional’s role. Scade, 29, is back in golf full time after a stint where he pursued a business initiative alongside coaching work at Little Channels Golf Centre. The former EuroPro Tour golfer explained how his fresh start followed an enquiry call from Crondon Park’s owner in late summer. Scade said: “I came along and had a chat. We had a look around and both talked about what we thought. Then I went away and put together a plan of how to increase revenues and things like that. He made me an offer a day later. It all happened very quickly and now I’m here six days a week. “I’ve played loads of golf courses but I genuinely believe that this can be the best place in Essex. I know people will say, ‘Oh well, you’re there now, you have to say that.’ “But before I actually got the call I’d played Crondon Park a few times with a friend and said, ‘I wish I was practising here when I was playing here full time’ – because of the test it is. You haven’t really got a test like this in Essex. “The place has got loads of potential and the job excites me. It’s great to be involved.” Scade started in his new position in
September and the coming winter months will see him busily preparing for the 2020 season. But he has already been getting stuck into building up business at Crondon Park’s driving range by investing in modern technology to assist his coach’s eye. He said: “I’ve just bought a Flightscope, so I’ve got a launch monitor now. I don’t do things by halves – I want to be the best in whatever I do. I want to make this the best coaching facility around and eventually we’ll bring in other pros once I fill up my diary. “We’ve got a 14-bay covered driving range that’s floodlit. The range is a really good one and we’ve just bought 8,500 new golf balls. We’ve got some other things in the pipeline.” Scade has long been recognised as one of the most talented golfers in the East and he showed as much in a rare 2019 outing, winning the John O’Gaunt Pro-Am back in late May. He shot a five-under-par round of 66 that day to beat a very strong field. And the plan is to play more in the region next year. Scade confirmed: “I’m going to play in the Order of Merit events and also in a few proams.” Looks like it could be a big 2020 for Crondon Park’s newest recruit ... Contact James Scade: 07837 961 065

progress in any area it is all about taking action but it has to be personalised to you. They don’t have to big actions either. It could be just getting your clubs re gripped, doing 10 minutes of stretching twice a week, checking your set up or have a coffee with a friend to ask for their feedback on your game. Something small can make a big difference in the long run.

ESSEX GOLF UNION’S PRESIDENT’S REVIEW 2019 here did the year go? As 2019 draws to its close there is still so much left undone. The year started with some radical rule changes, which players are slowly becoming used to. County W rules guru Steve Bonnington welcomed the rule changes and reflected that although early on in the season competitors needed reminding of rule changes, they quickly got into the habit of dropping from the knee however, the realisation of how rapidly three minutes pass took a little longer to digest. The concept of “ready golf “still has some way to go, but we’ll keep working on it. It is not my intention to go into too much detail but would like to mention for me the highlights of our County competitions. The Keating, our first competition was won by Josh Read, Rayleigh Golf Club who has since gone on tour as a professional caddy. Our premier event, the County Championship was won by Brandon Meads, Chelmsford Golf Club by a significant margin of 5 shots. The Clifford Trophy saw the return of two protagonists from their respective colleges in the USA, namely Jack Dyer, defending champion and Ryan Cox. Ryan shot a course record in one of his rounds but was unable to contain Jack who won the day by one shot, thereby retaining the Trophy. The Romford Trophy gave me the opportunity to watch our two leading amateurs bang heads, namely Curtis Knipes and Aaron Edwards-Hill both from Chelmsford. The result was in doubt right to the end with Curtis at 7 under winning by one shot. Winner of the order of Merit was Lukas Warren of Thorndon Park. Unquestionably the County’s team of the year was Chelmsford Golf Club who won The Thornton Cup to go with the Esplen Trophy as well as finishing runners up to City of Newcastle Golf Club in the English Champion Club at Romford. Chelmsford were also winners of the Youth Shield scratch league and runners-up in the handicap league. The County’s Community Junior Tour for Under 18s goes from strength to strength, now with eleven venues and we continue to explore ways to make this event a better experience for our younger players. The Norman Garon Trust has been generous with its sponsorship of this event and our gratitude is extended to the trustees and especially Alan Walker who has been a prime mover and supporter. My special thanks go to Lawrence Kingsnorth and Bill Dunbar in managing the tour. Last year we were in 5 finals and this year 3. It would be fair to say our County Teams had a mixed year. The highlight as previously mentioned was the Colts, managed by David Edwards winning the Trophy for an unprecedented third consecutive year, congratulations David and your squad. Both the seniors and Under 16s got into their finals but finished runners-up. - 43 -

The County team is in a transitional state having lost 4 players to the professional ranks earlier this year but can assure you the players who are replacing them, are of a similar standard if not better – the future is bright. I frequently hear that golf is an old man’s game but performances in our County and National Events by Essex Players all under 23 years confirm entirely the opposite as I will demonstrate. William Horne – Thorndon Park – aged 15 – handicap scratch - won Sir Michael Bonnallack and Colt Trophies at Thorpe Hall. Harley Smith – Rayleigh Club – aged 14 – Essex Golf Union president Brian Collins and Andrew Murray handicap +1 - finished 6th in the Romford guest speaker. Trophy, 6th in the McGregor Trophy, the English Boys Under 16 championship and 5th in the English Boys Under 14, the Reid Trophy and as a consequence has been selected for the England Under 16 team. In August Jack Brown won the South East of England Links Championship at Royal Cinque Ports. At this point it would be appropriate to also mention Bradley Bawden from Rochford Hundred who spent most of the year playing collegiate golf in the USA and climbing to just outside the WAGR top 200 but also enjoyed some success in the English Men’s having won through to the semi-finals beating Arron Edwards-Hill on route. Special mention must be made of Curtis Knipes who qualified for the Open Championship at Royal Portrush and as far as I can tell, is the first Essex Amateur to do so since Michael Bonallack in 1973. We were all thrilled for him and shared his disappointment when the worst of the weather put paid to his quest for the silver medal. In August he won through to the quarter finals of the English Men’s’ Amateur Championship where he lost to the eventual winner and world ranked number 2 amateur Conor Gough. PLAYER OF THE YEAR Every year the President chooses the winner of the Presidents Player of the Year Trophy. When I look at this player’s results for the year for all Regional and National Events it reads like Sir Michael Bonallack’s playing career. Here are just a few of his successes: n Spanish Amateur Top 20 n Italian Amateur top 20 n West of Ireland Runner-up n Irish Amateur – tied 3rd n English Men’s Amateur – tied 9 n Romford Trophy – Runner-up n North of Ireland – Winner n Faldo Series South – winner n Faldo Series Winner which was played in the United Arab Emirates n As well as a County Team player n Consequently, he has been selected to play for England Men’s Squad - 44 -

I am pleased to announce that the winner of the Presidents Trophy is - Aaron Edwards-Hill It should be noted that none of the foregoing could be achieved without a group of dedicated people, who go out in all weather, freely giving up their time. I am of course talking about the team mangers who live under an ever-increasing raft of rules and regulations regarding boys U18. In addition, they deal with boys not being available for selection due to exams, holidays and in some case club competitions. Perhaps now is the time to reiterate the long-standing adage, where a player’s responsibilities should lie and in the order of: Country, County, Club and self. So, to our managers and their assistants, I say thank you for everything you’ve done and continue to do. There are 2 other groups, outside the office, who are directly involved with the development of teams and the application of rules. Firstly, we have a coaching program, starting with the Under 12s who have 5 centres with approximately 20 youngsters in each. Under 14s and Under 16s have their individual programs, all run at the Warren Golf Club under our lead professional David Brooks. To Bill Dunbar and Keith Mitchell who is standing down and all the professionals I extend the County’s and my thanks. Secondly our referees who have had to re-sit their exams headed up by Steve Bonnington and had to contend with the new rule changes this year. This they have done supremely well, giving up their time often in very adverse conditions. Their ranks have swelled this year with the addition of 2 ladies or should I now say women referees. To you I say welcome and to you all I say many thanks for the job you do. This year we’ve had our challenges – notably the preparation of the courses for the slope system pending the introduction of the Worldwide Handicap in 2020. We are well on course in completing this program, however any courses that haven’t been rated in 2020 will be given an interim rating. To Phil Kirkham and his team who have undertaken this onerous task, my most grateful thanks. In February next year, we will be holding four workshops regarding the WHS, details of which have been posted to clubs and the website. This information should give clubs time to have everything in place for its introduction in November. The new rules I have mentioned but I’m sure we can agree that the biggest effect has been on the green with the flag being in or out. Communications have not been easy and would ask that if anyone requires information please use the website, as 9 times out of 10 the answer will be there. So who or what is the glue that holds all this together - organising events, dealing with Congu matters, creating staff rotas, reminds us of what we should be doing, I am of course referring to the office of Nick McEvoy, (County Secretary), James Gurry, (Assistant secretary) and Joanne Roblin, my special thanks to you for all that you do. My personal thanks must go to Lawrence Kingsnorth, President Elect who has lightened the load with his involvement and wise counsel. A key aim in The Essex Golf Union’s agenda is “that through our development we hope to produce our next generation to represent the County and up to National level”. The results I have described suggest we are on track with this objective, but there is still more to do and with the help of our affiliated clubs making golf accessible, affordable and welcoming we can achieve more. And finally, I thank those who make the Essex Golf Union work. The unsung volunteers who work tirelessly throughout the year and on behalf of the Essex Golf Union Board, I wish you all and your clubs all the very best for the festive season and hope 2020 brings with it all you hope for.

FALDO SERIES EUROPE WINNER ARRON EDWARDS-HILL stablished in 1996, The Faldo Series is recognised as the E only global amateur series for boys and girls. Competitors from ages 12 to 21 have the opportunity to play WAGR counting events whilst testing themselves against the very best juniors around the world, with the chance to meet Series Founder, Sir Nick Faldo, at the Faldo Series Europe Grand Final. Qualification for the Final started in March with more than 2000 hopefuls from 20 qualifying events competing for a place in the Grand Final. Faldo Series Alumni included some fairly impressive golfers such as Rory McIlroy, Tyrell Hatton, Matt Wallace, Eddie Pepperell, Tom Lewis, and Oliver Fisher. The Grand Final took place on the tricky 6764 yard par 70 course at Al Ain Shooting, Equestrian and Golfing Club in Abu Dhabi, UAE where 60 golfers from 18 nations competed for one of Junior golf ’s most coveted crowns. Despite playing under par rounds of 68 on the first two days of the competition Chelmsford man Arron commenced his final round still four strokes adrift of the leader. However, those who have watched Arron over the years will know how determined this young man is and as always seems to be the case the back nine is where the game is won and lost. From holes ten to fourteen Arron fired five straight birdies and finished with a scintillating round of 64 to capture the overall Championship by two strokes. Having devised a Series that hosts a Grand Final designed to prepare the finalists for the rigours of professional golf, emulating a Tour experience and a media spotlight, Sir Nick Faldo was on-site to weigh in wherever he could to try and aid the developmental experience. He commented: “I continue to be impressed by the quality of these guys and girls coming through. Anyone that makes a Grand Final deserves to be there on merit, and it’s weeks like these that prove to be the ultimate test. Meeting the competitors this week really brings the Faldo Series to life for me and makes me proud of how it’s grown in 23 years to be the stand-out event in junior golf.” Top scores overall and in each age category: Overall: Arron Edwards-Hill (ENG): -10. THORNTON CUP PLATE FINAL Stoke by Nayland – Sunday 27th October n Sunday the 27th of October Boyce Hill Golf Club played O Clacton on Sea Golf Club in the final of the Thornton Cup Plate at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club. After an earlier date was cancelled due to inclement weather, the rescheduled day fortunately greeted the players with bright blue skies and little wind. Both sides included several County Team representatives from different age groups. First out for Boyce Hill was County Captain Andy May who beat Matt Baker 2 & 1. Another County representative, this time of the senior team, Boyce Hill’s Chris Aukett beat Bill Leonard 1up. Dave Abbott from Boyce Hill then managed to secure a further point by winning 2 & 1 against the County’s Under 18 team member Jake Wells. Jake’s U18 County Teammate from Boyce Hill, Patrick Arundel, comfortably won his match 5 & 4 against Brady Diplock. The same score line was achieved in the following match where County player Ricky Lee beat Clacton’s Club Champion Nick Tedder-Ward. With all five matches resulting in wins for Boyce Hill the momentum was clearly in their favour and the Clacton team were showing the strain of being under such pressure from their opponents. In match 6 Clacton’s other County Team Member, Wilf Elliott, who plays for the Under 16s Team lost to The 2019 Essex Matchplay Finalist Alex McGown 4 & 2. By this time Boyce Hill had secured the Trophy by winning all 6 points from the first 6 matches. With Boyce Hill’s Tom O’Brien beating Josh Bethel 5 & 4, and Adam Soilleaux’s 3 & 2 victory over Clacton’s Tom Heffer, and another County Under 18 Team Member Harry Wood winning by an impressive margin of 7 & 6 against Clacton’s Peter Hewett, a full house of wins for Boyce Hill was on the cards. So when shortly afterwards Matt Swain’s 2 & 1 victory for Boyce Hill over Jiawan Rai was reported, the 10 – 0 white wash was complete. The match was played in great spirit and despite the heavy defeat the Clacton team members remained upbeat with the sense that they had done well to reach the final. The Essex Golf Union President Elect was in attendance to present Boyce Hill Golf Club with the Plate trophy and their medals. Boyce Hill team members were thrilled to have won the Thornton Cup Plate and with the experience gained this year we are sure that both Clacton and Boyce Hill feel they could be serious contenders for the Thornton Challenge Cup in 2020. - 47 -

2019 LESLIE F WOOD PLATE FINAL Stoke by Nayland – Sunday 27th October he Leslie F Wood Plate Final was played at Stoke by Nayland and in this year’s final the T two clubs that faced one another were Orsett & Woolston Manor. As with the Thornton Cup Plate, this final was originally scheduled for the 6th October, but was rescheduled due to torrential rain flooding the course. This final proved to be a fantastic match up as both sides fielded strong teams, with Orsett slightly taking the edge on their handicap average of 9.1 compared to Woolston Manor’s 9.6.Very little in it in the grand scheme of things. First out was Orsett’s Mark Keen against Woolston Manor’s Stuart Sheppard, Orsett’s 3 & 1 victory secured the first point. The 5 & 4 victory of Simon Chilvers over Martin Lilley meant Woolston Manor pulled level. The next two matches were Orsett’s as Simon Smith and Michael Lilley beat Josh Kite & Joe Phillips 4 & 3 and 3 & 2 respectively. With the match now at 3 – 1 in Orsett’s favour the points were shared in the following two matches. Orsett’s James Wickens halving with Rob Osborn and Woolston Manor’s James McCallan having with Arron Waters. Now at 4 – 2 Orsett clearly held the upper hand and when Orsett’s Scott Worton and James Irving completed respective victories of 3 & 2 and 2 Up over Woolston Manor’s Rob Norris & Jason Leigh the final score looked a greater margin that it may have done, as the match seemed far tighter than the overall score of 6 – 2 suggested. The match was played in tremendous spirits and everyone enjoyed their day, despite there always having to be a losing side, Woolston Manor were noble in defeat and congratulated their opponents as the presentation followed. The Essex Golf Union would like to thank Stoke by Nayland Golf Club for hosting the event and their wonderful hospitality, and also the many spectators who came to enthusiastically support both teams. - 48 -

n Tuesday 22nd October, a beautiful sunny day, Sally Hickson, the new Ladies' Captain of Maylands Golf Club, held her Drive-In. The morning was a fun Texas Scramble, followed by Sally's drive-in which included the tradition of the lady members attempting to be the one who retrieves the ball once struck from the tee. This turned out to be quite interesting as several ladies were hot contenders and, only after a scrum which the England rugby team would have been proud of, was a winner declared.
laygolf Colchester Seniors held their Wines and Spirits Competition with the AGM P directly after. In order to allow time for the AGM after the round of golf, only fourteen holes are contested with the top players receiving a choice of spirits. John Eade (24) took top spot, scoring 30 points from the fourteen holes played. Daniel Caffin (25) took second place on countback from Paddy Hanvey (10) with both scoring 28 points. Stuart Robinson took home two sleeves of balls for birdies on the par three third and sixteenth. George McKernon also received a sleeve of balls for his birdie on the sixteenth.
Sally then provided afternoon tea. This is the second time that Sally has acted as Maylands Ladies' Captain and all the lady members attended, wearing their new club colour - Royal Purple - to wish her good luck.

W
hen Phyliss England was agreeing to be Captain of Langdon Hills Golf Club I don't suppose she expected the ladies of Langdon Hills to dress up in French and English attire. Having connections with both it was the only way to go. Jo Ward putted out with a garlic bulb which Phyliss then smashed down the
fairway giving everyone a taste of the year to come! Some dressed as Onion sellers, others as English knights but whatever their dress everyone had a great day which finished with 18 holes, dinner and a presentation of prizes. First place was Dawn Adams with runner up Karen Simpson.

MUD BALL T
here is no escape from the rapid change of course conditions so adaptability is required now for the next four to five months. So, this months article is based around playing those short chip or finesse shots off that muddy lie. Please don’t forget the pick and place or other named winter rules, the lift clean and placement of your ball in a closely mown area within the designated 6” no nearer the hole. This affords us the best possible lie we can. Here are some key pointers I would suggest are detrimental to playing a successful shot from that “Muddy lie” 1. Don’t always assume the angle of club shaft needs to be increased to “dig” the ball out as in the image. This in conjunction with increased weight distribution on our target leg can result in the leading edge of the club digging into the
mud. This causes a big steep muddy divot with the ball travelling just a few feet in front of you. 2. Playing the ball too far back towards our nontarget foot is another opportunity to cause the club to “dig” into the mud we don’t want to lead with the hands. 3. Trying to “scoop” the ball with the hands without turning the chest through the shot will often cause the ball to scoot low across the green. This shot as we know it is called the thin which is not ideal especially in frosty conditions. The idea is to create a shallower pass to the ball using the “bounce” on the club which I will be covering in my “Sarah’s Sharpen up your short game for Spring sessions” I will post a range of new videos on my SarahBennettGolf Facebook page so why not “Like” the page and watch how to play those Mud Balls with success. VICTORIOUS DAY AT SOUTH ESSEX GOLF CLUB he Inaugural Nations Cup between the Rest Of The World and England T was played at the South Essex Golf Club, with the weather being kind apart from the wind. The match was played in great spirit after the first 6 matches it was tied at 33 and all to play for, but in the end the Rest Of The World were victorious 74. The match was played in foursomes betterball and singles, it was one of the best days ever at The South Essex Golf Club. South Essex is part of the Crown Golf Company. The club was also victorious in the Crown League this year out of 12 Crown clubs. All
Members would like to thank all the staff at the club for all their hard work this year. Next year will be bigger and better with over a 100 new members joining.
PLAY GOLF CAMPAIGN CAN INSPIRE MANY NEW PLAYERS DGA has launched a new international campaign to inspire people with disability to E try golf and enjoy the multiple benefits of the sport. Developed in partnership with Portuguese creative agency LUV, the new ‘PLAY GOLF’ campaign showcases eight EDGA players from three Continents with a range of disabilities who live life to the full through playing golf. The campaign is supported by a dedicated training programme which will engage with hospitals, rehabilitation centres, golf clubs and other sporting venues throughout 2020. Posters and graphics illustrate the eight players enjoying competitive golf along with a brief description of their disability, including players with amputation, a golfer who plays from a wheelchair, and others who are winning on the fairways and greens despite significant health conditions or challenges. EDGA is the international body that helps people with disability to thrive through the power of golf and together with its membership of 29 national golf federations wants to encourage 500,000 new players to try the game. It is expected that PLAY GOLF can raise more awareness that golf can be a highly inclusive game ideal for those with disability, offering physical and mental health benefits, as well as social benefits, for all those taking part.
EDGA players have been acting as role models and by showcasing their abilities through PLAY GOLF, EDGA intends to inspire new players to pick up a golf club while creating more opportunities to get started in the game. A dedicated training programme is being implemented, supported by national golf federations, during the year ahead. EDGA President Tony Bennett said: “The PLAY GOLF campaign is focused on creating interest, excitement and action so that people with disability are aware that almost everyone can play the truly inclusive game of golf. We are very grateful that eight of our established EDGA players have helped us with the campaign, each one of whom has overcome a huge challenge to play the game with a smile and enjoy life with fellow golfers; they are wonderful ambassadors for the game. “PLAY GOLF will gain momentum throughout 2020 and we will work together with hospitals, rehab centres, federations and PGAs to ensure that the appropriate training is given to therapists, doctors, carers, coaches and professionals in a growing number of our member federations.”

VICTORIOUS DAY AT SOUTH ESSEX GOLF CLUB he programme is now in its fifth year and has helped introduce over 5,000 girls to the game T of golf – inspiring beginners to enjoy themselves in a fun, friendly and safe environment. Applications are now open for affiliated clubs and HSBC Golf Roots centres who wish to join in the fun for 2020 and encourage the next generation of girl golfers to pick up a club for the first time and have a ball at their local golf venue. The closing date for applications is 8 January, 2020. In 2019, 112 facilities across England signed up to make Girls Golf Rocks a runaway success. In 2020, there is scope for up to 200 facilities across all counties to get involved in the biggest girls’ coaching programme in the country. England Golf and the Golf Foundation have joined forces once again to set up the initiative and will provide marketing tools, resources and coachfunding for clubs eager to take part. Clubs will be tasked with teeing up two separate six-week teaching blocks at times convenient to them between May and October 2020. The emphasis on the lessons is for the girls to learn the fundamentals of the game, have fun with their mates in a comfortable and relaxed setting without too much emphasis on the coaching and competitive elements of the game. The six-week blocks will take the girls through all the basics culminating in a final session on the
course where they can put into practice all they have learned from their PGA-qualified coach. Clubs can also stage taster sessions ahead of any coaching block – however this is at the discretion and expense of each club. The aim of Girls Golf Rocks is to boost participation numbers and address for the longterm the disparity in numbers between girls and boys playing the game. While qualified PGA professionals will lead the sessions, Girls Golf Rocks will also encourage current girl members to act as peer role-models and assist in the delivery at each club by becoming ambassadors. In 2019, 166 girl ambassadors helped support the sessions and ensured it was the most successful campaign to date. Lauren Spray, Women and Girls manager at England Golf said: “We’re excited to open applications to clubs looking to get involved in the 2020 Girls Golf Rocks campaign. “Thousands of girls have been already introduced to the sport and caught the golfing bug through Girls Golf Rocks. “Now we want to encourage new recruits to share in the fun and start out on their own golfing pathway.” For a 2020 application form and more details on the Girls Golf Rocks programme please go to www.girlsgolfrocks.org

Second place was taken by the team from Abridge with their Professional Jack Winer and a home team was third playing with Craig Housden.

nce again the weather was benign at the Ipswich layout for the Essex PGA Pro-Am O early in November. Robert Coles from Maylands Golf Club was just back from an impressive performance in the PGA Cup in Texas and his form continued in Suffolk. A 3 under par round of 68, with a stunning eagle three on the par five 13th hole was enough to take the title by one shot from Mark Baker of Colchester Golf Club and Matt Stables from South Essex Golf Centre. In the Team competition, the in-form team from South Essex with their Professional Steve Cipa won by 4 points with a very impressive score of 91. This was enough to beat the team from Thorndon Park with Roger Gray and the team with Matt Stables. Captain Craig Laurence thanked Ipswich Golf Club for the presentation of the course and the catering on a special day in Suffolk.

Forty four golfers of all ages and abilities played in a team event each 4 ball having a junior golfer. The Junior Captain's Team, Jon Russell, won with the Sponsors team, Briggs Engineering being runner up. She also won the ladies longest drive with Katie Davies being the nearest the pin for the girls. Connor Scott took home a shirt for being the highest scoring player with a handicap of over 30 in only his third full round! After the game the years presentations were made and a meal with parents and friends. A great day was enjoyed by all!

WILL YOU TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY?
he weather has finally turned for the year, with a few frosts and plenty of rain. I’m fresh T back from 18 holes, completed as a two ball in just under three hours. It’s still great to get out in these winter months, and a brisk round can keep that swing going until the warmer months. How many of you have new golf equipment or clothing on your Christmas list? How many of you have requested lessons with your local teaching pro? How many have made a commitment to themselves to take some action and improve their game next season? If I reflect on the past year, it’s been a very satisfying year, golf-wise. A look through the notebook that I record my three best shots each round, reads as if I should be on the PGA or European Tour! Chip-ins, holed bunker shots, 40 foot putts, and even a hole in one. The benefit of this? Well I’d much prefer to reminisce over the great shots than the ones that didn’t go to plan. Re-living great moments builds confidence and momentum ... the alternative thought process is not useful at all (so why give it thought space)? Having held Mind Zone workshops this past year and worked individually with clients, I do enjoy their success stories. Rome wasn’t built in a day and with commitment and practice, many of the tools I have spoken about this past year, are reaping rewards for those using them.
Sticking to a process, playing the Reset Six, dealing with the game of consequence and of course, good self talk, will always increase your golfing ability and ultimately your enjoyment. I’ve spoken to many of the incoming Captain’s from various clubs in the past few weeks, and look forward to working with you in the New Year. If we haven’t yet spoken and you’re a Captain or GM of a Golf Club, then drop me a line. As a final thought, to improve in whatever we do, we must gain more knowledge and skill. That can come from a variety of ‘experts’, social media, books, etc. however, never be too proud to take advice and have a go. I’m forever attempting to pick up tips to improve my golf and playing a game recently, a former Captain and single figure handicapper who has won a multitude of Club Championships and Competitions over the years, shared a couple of tips, that I have since put into practice with success. He’s attended a couple of Mind Zone sessions, so is well aware of what I do, and even asked ‘Do you mind me giving a couple of tips’? I readily took them! Try something, persevere, as it may just work for you. Do what works ... and then do some more. Have a happy and healthy Christmas, and I look forward to meeting you on a Mind Zone session in 2020.

GREAT SUPPORT FROM RIVENHALL LADIES his year, the Ladies Section at Rivenhall T Oaks Golf Centre in Witham have supported The J's Hospice by organising three events in order to raise funds for this charity, which provides care to young adults with serious life limiting conditions. The first was an Easter Raffle, then on the 21 August a golf day was organised which was very successful with teams Lady Captain Marion Carroll, Marianna Alexandrou, Denise Whiffen the founder of J's, Maureen Williams Secretary and Fiona Ashcroft Treasurer presenting the cheque. entering the competition from Regiment Way, The Essex, Crondon Park, enjoyable evening. CHARLIES CHARITY n June 1st of this year Belhus Park Golf Club held their annual charity day hosted O by the Captain Mr Charlie Griffin (back left in picture). Following a massive effort by himself and with the help of the members, of which there are only 78, Charlie raised the magnificent amount of £2500 in aid of Beacon Hill Academy, a local special educational needs school. The cash raised was gratefully received by the headmistress Mrs Hewitt.

Season’s Greetings from the 2020 Jubilee Cup Committee s the months are definitely dark now, and the A majority of the Committee’s preparation work is done in readiness for 2020, it is now over to you guys! Or more specifically, all of the club organisers and Jubilee Cup Captains for our teams entered in 2020. They have all they need now to make contact with their League phase opposition, and begin arranging matches within the “PLAY BY” dates on the schedule, for each of the four Rounds. if you want to be considered for you teams, or even look to help them out, please do feel free to make contact - they may be organising trials, Whatsapp groups etc. etc., so get involved. Your club organiser has been provided with all these contact details, the individual matches and opponents they will be playing, and should not be making contact with opponent Captain-Organisers to get matches in the club diary. As always, the League phase certainly have PLAY BY dates to compete by, and as I said at the AGM I don’t have any issues if clubs wants to play in Jan or Feb 2020 if it helps get the match complete! Following close on the heels of the 2019 final at Canons Brook, Colchester Golf Club hosted the Committee and club organisers for our Annual General Meeting, and the all-important 2020 draw. Our 46 clubs are organised into eight Leagues, and will all play at least 4 matches to accumulate points, with the top two teams in each League going on to our Knock Out phases (home advantage is granted to the winners of the League in the next round of Sixteen teams). The Jubilee Cup is for MidHandicap golfers with playing handicaps 12 and above (maximum playing handicap of 24). Each game is organised into 6 individual matches, and three 4-ball better ball matches playing off 90% handicap, so plenty for all members of your clubs midhandicap section. - 60 -

In addition, all players who take part in a competition match will accumulate their own personal points as part of the Jubilee Cup Order of Merit, and will have the opportunity to win trophy as end of the season Singles or Pairs champion and runner up. So all to play for! On a personal note, and on behalf of the Jubilee Cup Committee (Christer Stenbacka our Web Guru, Treasurer Alan Tindall, Neil Mitchell the Competition Secretary, and myself), we wish you all the best of the Season, good luck in your planning of League matches, and here’s to a great new season when Essex Golfer returns in 2020 and we will share further detail on the plans for Round 1, being played BY 5th April 2020.
