LEVERMORE FLYING HIGH ason Levermore underlined his reputation as one of the best players in East region history J by winning the Order of Merit for a sixth time – thanks to victory in the KJW Millbrook Masters. Levermore started the week in third spot on the rankings but leapt to the summit with another rock-solid performance. The Essex ace shot rounds of 70 and 69 to finish five-under-par, three clear of joint runnersup Mark Talbott (Thorpe Hall) and Chase Davis (Eaton). In trademark style, Levermore made 16 pars and two birdies on day one to trail first-round leader Chris Baron (West Essex) by a shot. And he signalled his intentions at the start of the second day, making birdie on the opening hole. But it was back-to-back gains on the ninth and tenth that really consolidated his title push. Indeed, he could even afford the odd hiccup down the stretch, including at the 15th where he found the gorse with an errant drive and ended up making bogey. However, Levermore clinched victory at The Millbrook in the fashion of a real champion, making birdie at the last where he holed out from a greenside bunker. The success meant that Levermore claimed back-to-back Order of Merit crowns and it was all the more of an achievement, given that he was staving off jet-lag. He’d only flown back from Texas at the start of last week, having played for Great Britain and Ireland in their slender 12-14

defeat to the USA in the PGA Cup. Levermore, 40, said: “I’ve felt a bit tired the last few days – I must have yawned 100 times on the front nine on the first day to the point where my eyes started watering. “But that might have meant put me in good stead in one way as I was kind of relaxed and chilled. “I played steadily. Apart from a couple of loose ones on the second day I didn’t really put a foot wrong. “It’s always nice to win – and always nice to finish top of the Order of the Merit but that’s not a goal at the start of the year. The top-three is all I’m really worried about.” The reason why a top-three berth is so coveted by Levermore and his colleagues on the East region circuit is that it books a place in the season-ending PGA Play-Offs, which features the best players from the seven PGA regions. This year’s PGA Play-Offs will once again take place in Turkey at Antalya from November 27-29. And joining Levermore from the East region will be Talbott and James Ruebotham (Welwyn Garden City). Both will be making their first appearance in the PGA Play-Offs. Talbott was fourth coming to the Millbrook but his tied-second spot saw him finish immediately behind Levermore, while Ruebotham ended up in third position on the Order of Merit after sharing eighth place at the Bedfordshire course.

GOLF UNIONS PUBLISH NEW GOVERNANCE GUIDE

he Home Golf Unions have jointly issued a new governance guide for clubs in the T ongoing drive to modernise and grow the game. The document provides tools, activities, discussion points and best practice ideas for clubs to take on board. Clubs can find pointers on how best to tackle the challenges of an evolving membership structure, constantly-changing legal requirements and all-important safeguarding procedures. Wales Golf, England Golf and Scottish Golf have joined forces with the British and International Golf Greenkeepers’ Association, the Golf Club Managers’ Association, the Professional Golfers’ Association and the R&A, to provide this invaluable resource. By co-ordinating a unified approach to good governance and setting this out in an easy-to-read format in the second edition of the guide, clubs the length and breadth of the country will now benefit from a strong template which can either be adopted or adapted to meet needs of individual organisations. The guide includes varied case studies from England, Scotland and Wales which provide realtime reference points to demonstrate the practical benefits of adopting good practice at all levels of club management. “We know golf club membership in Wales overall has recently gone up by almost 1,000, reversing a downward trend,” said Wales Golf

chief executive Richard Dixon. “Good club governance is essential to change this trend for the long term. We are fully committed to supporting our clubs to do this, combining the support of our development team with this guide. We also know that increasing membership has been led by clubs with good governance, there are clear lessons in how they are showcasing the considerable benefits of club membership. They have adapted to cope with modern society and satisfy the needs of their members, as well as attracting new people to our sport. our delivery team can assist clubs by providing tailored support to meet club needs and help grow their business.” The R&A’s backing for the governance guide underlines their ongoing commitment to the modernisation of golf. “We all have a role to play in growing golf and if we are to achieve that goal then we have to modernise and make the sport more appealing, accessible and inclusive,” commented Duncan Weir, Executive Director – Golf Development and Amateur Championships. “Good governance in the running of clubs is a key element of ensuring that golf is attractive both to existing members and potential new members. This guide is designed to promote best practice in governance and act as a reference resource for clubs to help them continue to improve and develop their management processes.”

The Jack Halls is the last of the Club’s vets competitions of the season and saw 68 members turn out in what was promised to be a wet and windy day although wet underfoot after all the recent rain, Ian Thompson with the Jack Halls conditions were Trophy and the new Vets Captain Roy Derby. good. MOBILITY + FLEXIBILITY FOR HOME

W

ill the rain ever stop? Rainy October I am sure has ruffled a few golfers feathers! I love feedback, I love hearing from you all and recently I received an email from a gentlemen saying he had been practicing one of the exercises I had suggested and that it was working ... Happy Vicki! He also asked for some mobilisation/flexibility exercises that can easily be done from home ... so this article will cover just that! If you have any requests on topics of article please pop me an email and ask ... I would be happy to cover specific topics. Stretching and mobility is a huge subject! I could write pages and pages of exercises to try. Today I am going to focus on a few key ones that can all be performed from home, in a hotel room, at the golf club or wherever you are! PEC MINOR STRETCH

I love this stretch for golfers and its so easy to perform anywhere. Search You Tube for the

following: SwissBall Pec Minor Stretch / Robbins Rehabilitation. In this stretch a swiss ball is used but you can use the side of a foot stall, a chair, the sofa! PIRIFORMIS STRETCH

This is a must! You Tube piriformis stretches - if you want a more specific link to a stretch let me know and I can send one over. If you want more freedom in your hips, get stretching the piriformis. All you need is the floor and yourself. HORSE STANCE DYNAMIC

This is one of my favourite exercises to mobilise the spine. Not a traditional mobilisation but I have used it for over 10 years with my golfers and love the results it gets! Pop horse stance dynamic into You Tube. Again any help you need let me know. All you need is a soft floor or mat and yourself. Try the above and let me know how you get on. Bring on dry November!

When Is The Best Time To Change Equipment? T

his is a question I get asked quite a bit and in all honesty it’s actually best to change around this time of year. Reason for this is that if you look at a ‘normal’ golfing season it runs from around March to October. Unless you are having major problems with your clubs this time of year makes total sense as it gives you plenty of time to hit the range to break them in and also a decent number of rounds to get to grips with your yardages.

Changing too close to the start of the season means you are coming to terms with your new clubs whilst competing in the first few tournaments of the year. Another nice thing about changing this time of year is that you don’t have any pressure on you to get out on the course. If the weather is good then you can play, if it’s nasty then an hour at the driving range goes a long way. Many golfers will change their clubs in March/April time after a few months off over the winter, my problem with this is that a ‘rusty’ swing and new clubs generally don’t mix so if things don’t go well what do you blame? Yourself or your clubs? If you think about it this time of year you have plenty of golf behind you so you are getting your new equipment fitted with a few miles on the clock of your current technique. Another positive for changing this time of year is that you have the opportunity to look back over the year and see if there were any problems in your set make up. This could be a par 3 at your course that you couldn’t reach with one club but were long with your next club. Or maybe some of the longer par 4’s you consistently had a yardage that you did not have a club to cover the distance. Moral of the story here is that go into your fitting with a picture of what you need rather than simply taking the performance of a club during the session. Never forget having fitted equipment is not just about ball flights and spin rates, it’s also about having the right amount of tools in the bag to do the job. - 24 - 24 -

RANGE BALL SECRETS he innocuous range ball can be used for a variety of “drills and game improvement T practice techniques.

Firstly if there is a putting green at the range start with your bucket of balls and spend a few minutes putting. The emphasis moving towards winter golf has now has changed from the scoring aspect to setting performance goals working on specific technical aspects with your Coach ready for Spring 2020. This is the ideal time to work on the roll and strike of your putts, we know the purity of the greens is severely compromised so “holing out” is not necessarily the target at this time. Using the centre line on the ball strike some putts, if any “side spin” is applied to the ball this will be clearly visible displaying an uneven roll with “wobble.” Try a few of the drills in my previous posts or if you can’t recall use the two ball drill which incidentally can be used indoors so no excuse for missing those practice sessions ... The balls ideally want to travel a similar pace so minimal finishing distance between each ball when putted.

The second drill can be used if you are a prolific slicer of the ball with a driver, the images below show three range balls set to various positions (right handed golfer).

I The “Equator” can be

used to encourage the sweeping attack angle aiming to hit underneath the solid line instead of above the line which would create a steep angle. I The Out to In is the club path possessed for a steep slicer of the ball. I Positioning the ball as in the image using the line will encourage a more in to out club path as a visual. As we rotate the lower body through the ball the club will want to exit to the left but the solid line represents the initial starting line.

The Equator.

Out to In Club Path.

In to Out Club Path.

Remember Feel and Real are very different when making game improvements and practicing so always speak to your PGA instructor. The information is a guide to making your practice more productive whilst understanding your swing.

LEARN TO PUTT LIKE A TOURNAMENT PROFESSIONAL - PART 1

ave you ever thought that you would like to improve your scoring or indeed like to H become a Tournament Professional Golfer? Well,

there is one area of the game you could start with that could help you improve your scores or move you towards your dreams and that is Putting. The first area to look at is Green Reading. If you can’t read greens then you cannot Putt properly. The Art of learning to read a Green is understanding slopes and this can be done on my Zen Green Stage as seen on Sky Sports. As a Zen Putting Mechanic, one of the fundamentals is how does a Green work. I learnt a lot about greens at a seminar with Nick Middleton (Owner and Inventor of The Zen Green Stage) back in 2013. He discussed about H A Templeton who first understood about reading greens and also the effect on a golf ball, back in 1979. The following week in May 2013, I shared this information with Simon Khan and he unfortunately lost in a PlayOff for The BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.Very powerful you would say. Well what did I share? I made Simon understand that Pace and Path are key to holing putts - The speed of the green and the pace you strike a putt on will determine your Aim and the path the ball will roll on. This also coupled with the putt you faced. So situation may make you have to die the putt in or be firm in. I also did a green reading session with Todd Clements about 3 weeks before he Won The English Amateur in 2017. He was struggling with certain putts and this gave him more confidence to have conviction in his aim and the speed to strike his putts. DO THIS DRILL Select a Putt on a simple slope of the same gradient throughout the same distance of 10ft from a hole. For right handers R/L and left handers L/R. Then aim to roll a ball with your

hand, straight at the hole and watch the ball. See where it finishes. If it goes a foot beyond the middle of the hole your pace was good. Once you get pace, then aim either (right or left) depending on how you putt, the distance you saw the ball move and repeat the same pace. Then go with a Putter to see what result you get. By watching the ball, your brain learns what the ball does and then it can repeat it, when using an object. You are now on your way!

WINTER TRAINING If you would like to see me in my Putting studio I am doing a 2 hour deal for either 1 and upto 4 People for £100. Full use of Zen Green Stage and Quintic Ball Roll in every session. There is no limit to how many times from November 1st 2019 to February 29th 2020. Studio hire is also available. Please email me on wozthegolfpro1@gmail.com or mobile 07888 828 760. I will leave you with these 2 statements; Jack Nicklaus - “No matter your scoring goals you can attain them faster by improving your putting.” Bobby Jones - “As I see it, the thing that hurt my putting most when it was bad, was thinking to much about how I was making the stroke and not enough about getting the ball in the hole.” Happy Golfing,

T

FADING DRIVES

his was not the editorial i was going to produce this month but during the last week I have had two quite elite golfers ask me about hitting Fades with driver controlling the height and the curvature amount. This is a difficult question to answer for everyone but I thought I would give some of the components that need to be changed on the downswing to encourage left to right shots that do not get up too much in flight. So here are a few of the changes that need to be made to allow the player to control the flight . I have two images below one of which on the left I hit a reasonably high draw the other on right I hit a pretty good controlled fade. Here are the changes I made.

As you can see from the images these changes feel massive but do not look it. The big change from these changes in the images is where the butt of club is in relation to the ball and the middle of my hips. The butt is more left on the fade swing which controls how far the club can travel or not travel to the right of target line through impact I hope that helps anyone who struggles to hit fades and if you have any more questions feel free to call or email using the contact detail below. Have a great month Paul Holland, Director of coaching Abridge Golf Club Mobile: 07961 848 370 Email: paul@paulhollandgolf.com

BIG THANK YOU

M

y thoughts are on when the golf swing first appeared in the Essex Golfer in 1992, back then it was owned by Norman Head and later by his daughter in law Julie. No computers back then and the early articles were written in long hand with Norman having to decipher my handwriting. Once a month they would turn up with a camera and we would take the pics. often between lessons.

accuracy, bringing his putting A-game to earn a shot handicap cut and first place in the Playgolf Colchester Order of Merit Medal competition. Blackman carded the lowest gross of the day with his amazing two-over par 72 (nett 66). Blackman needed superb course management to fend off Paddy Hanvey (10) and Adam Eaton (16). Second placed Hanvey and Eaton, in third, needed countback to decide finishing positions with both carding nett 67. Eaton also received a shot handicap cut. Scott Clark (23) won a tight division two with his nett 67. John “Chappy” Chaplin (18) took second place on nett 69 from Roger Giles in third on nett 70.

ARE YOU ASKING YOURSELF GOOD QUESTIONS? W

e tend to think in questions such as what are we doing today or what is for dinner? We can ask a useful question or a useless one and the quality of our questions can determine if we get a good answer or not. The same applies to the golf course. If the questions we ask is don't topp it, don't hit it out of bounds, don't slice it etc. Is that question going to get a good answer? Probably not. So if we can ask a better question on the course can we start to get a better answer? You see another question. Try asking yourself these two questions before each shot and see if you start getting better answers.

IS IT POSSIBLE? – This is a great question to ask as the answer is always yes within reason and as long as it is a shot you can realistically hit. WHAT DOES A GOOD SHOT LOOK LIKE? – If you imagine the shot you want to

happen which can be like a shot tracer as you see on the golf coverage. A good shot for each golfer may be different which is fine as it has to be the one you can hit. The more you can visualise a good shot the more you are going to get the best out of yourself.

ESSEX FOURSOMES CHAMPIONSHIP West Essex Golf Club – Sunday 22nd September 2019 he 2019 Essex Foursomes was hosted by West Essex Golf Club. The silver tankards which are presented to the winners, were provided to the Essex Golf Union by Mr G E Larman, a Past T Captain of Rochford Hundred Golf Club and President of the EGU in 1932. This year a total of 34 teams took part from 27 Essex Clubs. It was a good representation for what has remained one of our most prestigious events of the calendar. The Weather forecast for late afternoon was similar to last year, when we were forced to cancel the event due to heavy rain flooding the greens. This year it was slightly more kind to the players, as the rain only fell for brief periods which meant the full 36 holes were achievable. The early leaders in the morning were four pairs all sat on one over par 72. Nicholas Callison & Jack Cook of Upminster, Jack Brown & Paul Prebble of Chelmsford, Patrick Arundel & Harry Wood of Boyce Hill and Five Lakes’ team of Will Boniface & Jackson Garnett. Two shots back from the leading quartet was another four teams tied for 5th spot, all poised to make a charge in the afternoon. These included Orsett’s Zachary Chegwidden & Cassidy Steffens and Romford’s Richard Collins & James Hazell. On 75 (+4) was Boyce Hill’s other team of David Abbott & Ricky Lee. The afternoon provided some exciting competition, with a number of teams all making an effort to climb the leader board. None more so than Benton Hall’s Paul Springall & Andrew Reynolds whose 3 birdies and just 2 bogeys saw their one under par 70 (and low score of the day) hoist them up into the top ten. Unfortunately, their morning round left them requiring a little more to be in the prizes but great golf all the same in testing conditions. Paul Prebble and Jack Brown of Chelmsford and Jack Cook & Nicholas Callison of Upminster dropped down the leader board with their matching afternoon scores of 79. Richard Collins and James Hazell dropped to 5th position after an afternoon score of 76 which meant they just missed out on the prizes by a shot on 150. On 149 was Orsett’s duo of Zach Chegwidden & Cassidy Steffens and Boyce Hill’s Dave Abbot & Ricky Lee. Boyce Hill’s afternoon score of 74 which matched Orsett’s morning round meant they pipped them on countback so Orsett had to settle for fourth whilst Boyce Hill took third spot. Boyce Hill also took second spot as their other team of Harry Wood & Patrick Arundel put together another fine round to total 148, which meant they squeezed into the runners up spot. Two shots clear of them were the most consistent team on the day. A 72 followed by their afternoon score of 74 for a 146 total and taking this year’s Essex Foursomes Championship were Five Lakes’, William Boniface & Jackson Garnett. A well-deserved victory, which included 5 birdies and an eagle over their 36 holes of golf, always impressive in a foursome’s format. Lawrence Kingsnorth, County President Elect, and Paul Nash, West Essex Club Captain, were on hand to present the winners with the silver tankards, prize vouchers and medals for becoming the 2019 Essex Foursomes Champions. Thank you to West Essex Golf Club for hosting such a fine event and offering fantastic hospitality. - 39 -

MULLIS TROPHY In Partnership with Maylands Golf Club – Sunday 29th September 2019

his year 46 teams representing 35 Clubs set off to play 18 holes in a fourball better ball stableford format, in what is traditionally the closing strokeplay event of the season in the Essex T County calendar. The weather was overcast with a heavy downpour of rain a short while before the first tee times making the course play its full length. Green fairways and lush greens made a beautiful setting for our competitors to do battle. One of the first scores returned was an excellent 42 points in the challenging conditions from the Mardyke Valley pairing of Eric Mayell and Tyler Moore. This was soon followed in by the Hainault pair of David Cope and Malcolm Hart who scored a creditable 40 points. As half the field had just about completed their rounds Andy Gardiner and Danny Bird from Upminster moved into a slender clubhouse lead with 43 points. There were some more great scores to come in the forty points bracket. Both Benton Hall pairings, Kenny Gee & Chris Robinson and Alan Moore & Steve McKoy scored 42 points, as did Jeff Ball & Yasar Soyler from Ilford, and Boyce Hill Pairing of Steve Smyth and Alex McGown submitted a 41 points total. It was looking very congested at the top of the leaderboard with four teams on 42 points, one behind the leaders from Upminster. The Theydon Bois pair of Michael Charlton & Chris Hughman then upset the apple cart by coming in with another great score of 43 points. Their back nine of 24 points was more than good enough to secure top spot on countback. It was a lead that none of the late starters could challenge. So the final result was a win for Theydon Bois on countback from Upminster. Third place went to early leaders Mardyke Valley, and fourth place were the Benton Hall pair of Gee & Robinson. We thank the sponsors of this event Mullis & Peake LLP and Maylands Golf Club for their hospitality and hosting the competition. - 40 -

South Eastern Group Colts League Final 2019

ESSEX v HAMPSHIRE Weybrook Park Golf Club – Sunday 13th October 2019 his year’s final of the South Eastern Group T Colts League was played at Weybrook Park Golf Club, Basingstoke in Hampshire. Originating as Basingstoke Hospital Golf Club it was a nine hole course within the hospital grounds for staff and guests. Land for a further nine holes was then leased from a local farmer and the eighteen Team players midday. holes became Weybrook Park Golf Club in 1997. With a further nine holes recently developed it’s well worth a visit if you are in the area. Poor weather has impacted every Essex Colts League match this season and this final was no exception. High winds and rain on practice days meant that players were unable to complete 18 holes and with poor weather again forecast for the Sunday match day a decision was made to play the eight singles first so that in the event that no afternoon play was possible a more equitable result would be achieved. Zach Chegwidden led the team out and after the front nine had been completed Essex were up in four matches and down in four predicting a very tight match However through the back 66"!=65342"64!%=>!68(?%4 nine the Essex fortunes improved considerably 666666!""!#66@6$%&'"$()! with Arron Edwards Hill being first home with an excellent 5&4 win followed a short while !""!# $%&'"$()! later by Zach winning 3&2. Anchor-man Shay McQueen was the next to arrive in the sanctuary of the clubhouse with a 4&3 win followed by Ben Humphrey a 3&2 winner. Battling through persistent rain the matches of Jack Brown and Kish Velani went to the wire with both emerging very wet and windswept but importantly victorious 1 up on the eighteenth. With a 6-2 lead at Lunch the Essex Colts were in a pretty much unassailable position needing only a half point from the afternoon foursomes to retain the Trophy. Lunch tasted good and with the rain relenting, all but slightly, the decision was made to press ahead with the afternoon foursomes. %26A!BC)33D6'%)D6=348654>C63?6">?E%B6FG-H63523C!)

Captain Jordan Slater and Kish Velani led the way and after seven holes of play Essex were looking good up in two matches and all square in two. As with the morning singles Essex were strong on the return nine with Orsett Zach Chegwidden and Cassidy Steffens going dormy six up and despite losing the next two holes secured the title for Essex with their 4&3 win. Chelmsford pairing Ben Humphrey and Arron Edwards Hill also went dormy six up, lost the next hole and finished 5&4 winners. Jordan and Kish battled to the last hole but lost 1up and finally the final pairing of Shay McQueen and Jack Brown again from Chelmsford who Jordan receiving the trophy from Weybrook Park Captain Mark Weston on the left Mike Rees SEG. were dormy two up, lost the seventeenth then won the 18th for a 2up win. The final result was an emphatic 9-3 victory for what is a very good Essex Colts team. In accepting the South Eastern Junior League Challenge Cup from Mark Weston the Weybrook Park Captain Jordan Slater thanked Weybrook Golf Club, the SE Management team, Essex Support team and the Hampshire team for making the day possible in what were very trying conditions for the both players and officials. As a footnote: This Trophy has been contested since 1969 when it was halved by Kent & Sussex. Before this year Essex have won outright ten times and halved three. This 2019 win is the first time any County has won the Trophy outright three consecutive years. Well done to all.

EG South Eastern Group Seniors League Final

ESSEX v KENT Muswell Hill Golf Club – Wednesday 16th September 2019

was a damp October day for the practice round of the South Eastern Counties Final of the League. Essex had won the Northern section convincingly by winning all their matches, IbuttSeniors for the final they were drawn against a very strong Kent side of whom the weakest handicap was +1. The day of the match, the forecast was rain early, clearing during the morning to leave a fine day. The weather forecast proved right but that was the only result in favour of Essex as they were soundly beaten by a far superior side. The matches were very tight but by the turn Kent were ahead in all but four matches and by the 16th only Jeff Bearman, Mark Whiten, Mike Partridge and Chris Aukett seemed to have a fighting chance. The final result of 9 games to 1 in favour of Kent failed to show how close the games really were, it is only when the result is studied that you realise how close it was. New to the team Paul Knight of Wanstead and Mike Partridge of Thorndon Park lost 1 down on the last, Ian Moore of Romford, Jeff Mathewson of Orsett and Chris Aukett of Boyce Hill lost 2 down with 1 hole remaining. Steve Rooney of Orsett lost 4 down with 3 holes remaining. Chris Bellamy of Romford lost 4 down with 2 holes remaining, Rob Douglas of Romford lost 5 holes down with 3 remaining. It was left to Jeff Bearman of Romford and Mark Whiten of Orsett to put our only points on the board both securing halved matches. A sound thrashing but hopefully we can strengthen the team next year and try again. Well done and congratulations to Kent. - 43 -

he ladies at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club played for the Val Bradford Trophy, this is an 18 Hole Stableford competition played on the Constable course over two days either on the Thursday or Saturday to include all ladies. Both days were bright but chilly to start, there was reduced run on the ball on the fairways after the recent rainfall, however the greens were very fast. This weeks results were good for weekday and weekend ladies to get an aggregate score result, all chasing the Trophy prize, but it was on form Elaine Harris who walked away with the Trophy after she had another fantastic game with 40pts off her newly cut handicap, she now receives yet another well earned cut. Overall winner: Elaine Harris – 40pts. - 45 -

stages with John Redden, Peter Anderson, Ed Pain and Adrian Girling being the team on the day with Simon Rowe and Mick Potter adding their weight in the earlier matches. The semi-final opponent was Gedney Hill from Lincolnshire who provided tough opposition with the match being halved. Redden and Pain both winning their matches. It was Redden, the lowest handicapper, who was thrust to the fore in the sudden death play-off and on the first hole with a par saw the team into the final. Finals day dawned after more heavy overnight rain and although no wind the course was far from dry. Their opponents were Leominster who had won their semi against Bridport and West Dorset. The team once more halved the match with Pain and Girling being the victors. Yet again the sacrificial lamb was Redden and into the play-off he went. He kept his nerve, and hitting the green and two putting was enough to secure the Championship for the team, and the Club at the first pay-off hole. Meanwhile another successful battle was fought at the Club’s AGM. The 2020 captain, Tim Logan was voted in by the membership, succeeding Jim Wilkinson. The new Captain confirmed that he was looking forward to his year with enthusiasm. - 46 -

now available at retail. Frostguard is built specifically to perform in the toughest of conditions so that golfers can simply focus on their game. Since golfers need warmth without sacrificing mobility in the swing, adidas incorporated down-filled panels on the front and back body of the Frostguard jacket and vest that keep players warm

T-RAIL combines the forgiveness of the brand’s Baffler hybrid with the precision of an iron in a oneof-a-kind set of clubs that are designed for higher handicappers looking to improve the consistency of their iron play as well as increase distance. The T-Rail set fuses a hollow, hybrid shape with an iron face and topline, creating an iron-hybrid design that delivers the perfect blend of distance, forgiveness and accuracy. A hollow body construction creates a lower, deeper centre of gravity than traditional cavityback iron designs allow and makes getting the ball airborne and on the desired target line easier than ever before. Twin Baffler rails on the sole provide excellent turf interaction for more speed and stability out of every lie, while a high-strength, forged steel face designed with E9 Technology features a thin pocket from heel to toe to enhance ball speed and distance on off-centre hits. “T-RAIL irons make it easy for beginners and - 48 -

golfers who have lost some distance and control to gain the confidence needed to play better and have more fun,” said Tom Olsavsky,VP of R&D, Cobra Golf. “Players who need max forgiveness and are looking for more distance will be amazed at how far and straight they hit these, even being able to get them airborne from tough lies.” Available in both men’s and women’s set make-ups, the T-Rail is offered in a seven-piece combo set, comprising 6-PW, SW and a 5-hybrid, with a 4- and 6-hybrid offered at an extra cost. The men’s combo set (£699/£799, st/gr) is offered in a black/blue with Cobra Ultralite 50g graphite shafts (Reg, Lite) or FST Ultralight steel shafts (regular) and Lamkin REL midsize grips. The women’s combo set (£799) is offered in black/lilac, with Ultralite 50g graphite (ladies flex) shafts and Lamkin REL grips in midsize. Both will be available to buy from November 15.

VETERANS SECTION FORRESTER PARK t Forrester Park Golf Club we have a particularly active Veteran men’s section. A We have just over 130 members with an average turn-out of 60 to 70 playing in weekly competitions. The Vets never turn any new members away, even if they have no handicap certificate we get them playing with us and entering competitions as soon as they have handed in enough score cards. There is a committee organising events every week and one thing we do is to make a random draw for our weekly competitions, this means that when Wednesday arrives we know we're playing with different people, without this we would naturally form regular groups with our closest friends. Of course playing with your friends is fine but on competition days the random draw allows us to meet more member during the year and to widen our circle of friends. Being part of a big group means you have plenty of variety in playing partners but we always seem to have something in common with each other. Golf isn't just about the sport but socialising as well. Importantly the random draw means it's quicker for new members to feel at home, also playing in different groups each week makes it easier for them to socialise other than competition days. The competition sheet goes on to the Internet and into the club house in advance of each event and members can check who their playing partners will be. It helps make the club a very welcoming place and I know of people joining this year who have found their way into a group playing on other days of the week very quickly.

TALKING TO YOURSELF?! hey used to say talking to yourself was the first sign of madness! I, on the other hand, T believe it to be a fantastic thing to do ... dependent on what you talk to yourself about. Positive affirmations! Talk nicely to yourself, and have some good quality inner dialogue, but here’s a tip ... tell yourself what you are going to do, rather than what you want to avoid! I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve turned up before a game, and even before the first shot, golfers are telling themselves they’ll have a bad round. Totally crazy! I’m sure you’ve heard many golfers on the putting green exclaim ‘I wish I’d saved that one for the course’, as if you have an allocation of holed putts to be used during the day. Now that we are getting towards the colder winter months, I’m starting to hear ... ‘It’s too wet’, ‘Too windy’, ‘the greens have been worked on, it’s a lottery with putts!’ I’m sure you’ve also heard one or two corkers yourself? Seriously, golfers have defeated themselves before they’ve even struck a shot! Even after the first one or two holes, I hear the following words and it really does make me smile

to myself … ‘I’ve just missed short putts on the first two holes, I know it’s going to be one of those days’ ... at which point I ask them what the winning Lottery Numbers are for this weekend, as it appears they can see into the future. The principle is the same. Now, how can you turn that around on itself? Literally, just because you have hit one poor shot doesn’t mean the next will be bad. Just because you have missed a three foot putt, doesn’t mean all three foot putts will be missed that day. Seriously, there is no logic to that way of thinking. (Clearly, if you are continually making poor shots, one after the other, then get yourself a lesson with a teaching pro.) Instead, go through your routine (and if you don’t have one, develop one, as I discuss on Mind Zone seminars), and have that internal dialogue ... This one is going down the middle of the fairway, or this putt is being holed. The important thing here is to say to yourself what you want to do. Through a narrow gap, perhaps over a pond, the dialogue would be ... ‘Go through my routine, steady swing, and finish the shot’ ... or whatever your routine is. I do tend to give stock answers when I’m at my local club and friends and members say to me ‘How have you been playing recently’... the answer is generally ‘Fantastic’ or ‘Yes, I’m playing really well’... (even though I may not have played for two weeks!) If you really want to look at this area of your game in detail and become a more consistent golfer, whatever your age and ability, then please do contact me. Enjoy your golf! www.themind-zone.com

SUCCESSFUL DAY AT THE ESSEX

n Friday the Seniors Captain John Tuffen organized a Seniors Charity day at The O Essex Golf Club. It was brilliant day, the rain stayed away, and the course was in excellent condition and twenty six teams of four competed for the prizes on offer. Representatives from The Air Ambulance organization the designated Charity this year with our Senior Captain John Tuffen, presented the prizes to the winners of the Dave

Clark trophy who consisted of Jim Duignan, Adrian Binns, and Trevor Barnett (unfortunately Trevor Armour had to leave before the presentation. ) The photo shows the Seniors committee with the cheque being presented to the Air Ambulance. A fantastic sum of money of over £2,000 was raised on the day thanks to our all our members and guests who attended.

WELL DONE LADIES

JACKPOT TIME olchester Golf Club hit the jackpot for charity by handing over £4,750 to the East C Anglian Children’s Hospices. The money was raised at the Braiswick club’s ProAm where more than 100 professionals and amateurs battled it out in the summer heat. Club Captain Jim Wilkinson presented the money to Jo White from E.A.C.H. “This year it is a particular pleasure to hand our cheque to E.A.C.H,” he said. “They offer so much care and support to children and their families in the region. “Specific thanks must go to the organisers, the generosity of the professional golfers and members who played on the day and all the others who so generously supported the occasion, so helping us to make a contribution to the superb and necessary work E.A.C.H. does in our community.”

his year, the Ladies Section at Rivenhall Oaks Golf Centre in Witham have T supported The J’s Hospice by organising three events in order to raise funds for this charity, which provides care to young adults with serious life limiting conditions. The first was an Easter Raffle, then on the 21 August a golf day was organised which was very successful with teams entering the competition from Regiment Way, The Essex, Crondon Park, Colne Valley, Benton Hall, The Notleys plus two gentlemen from Cambridge all taking part and very generously donating money for refreshments and the raffle. On the 25 October a Halloween Quiz was held, the Quizmaster, David Field and his wife Trish did an excellent job and made it a very enjoyable evening. During the break, the Lady Captain, Marion Carroll, presented a cheque in the sum of £1,382 to Denise Whiffen, the founder of The J's Hospice. This charity is now part of The Havens Hospice Group.

The Jubilee Cup Update from Jubilee Cup Committee, sponsored by Seabrook Warehousing, and reported by Chairman Phil Redhead

Welcome to the 2020 Jubilee Cup Who will challenge our third time (in a row) Jubilee Cup Champions Stoke by Nayland in next year’s competition? s a starter for ten, the Jubilee Cup is known for our friendly A competitive environment, and it is fabulous that we are bridging those gaps between mid-handicapper players across Essex. As evidence of this, it was very good to catch up with a colleague, and former Semi-Finalist Peter Quilty, at Playgolf Colchester’s recent Semi-Final experience. Following close on the heels of the 2019 final at Canons Brook, Colchester Golf Club hosted the Committee and club organisers for our Annual General Meeting, and the all-important 2020 draw. At the AGM, I was very happy to welcome a brand new club to the competition for next year – Welcome Andy Connor and Upminster Golf Club. Upminister join another 45 clubs in 2020, and will have the pleasure of taking on Colchester GC, The Rayleigh, Five Lakes and Blakes GC in the league phase of next year’s competition. Our 46 clubs are organised into eight Leagues, and will all play at least 4 matches to accumulate points, with the top two teams in each League going on to our Knock Out phases (home advantage is granted to the winners of the League in the next round of Sixteen teams). One of the beauties of the Jubilee Cup is that very fact, and confirmed by our member players - each team will have at least 4 competitive matches in the competition year March through June 2020. As I hope you all know (and anyone who does not, please feel to contact myself or any of the Committee), the Jubilee Cup is for Mid-

The 2019 Champions at our Final host venue Canons Brook GC, near Harlow.

Handicap golfers with playing handicaps 12 and above (maximum playing handicap of 24). Each match is organised into 6 individual matches, and three 4-ball better ball matches playing off 90% handicap, so plenty for all members of your clubs mid-handicap section. Please see how all the matches will play in our initial League phase in Divisions A through H, and more detail can be seen in our website at www.jubileecup.com/ matches2020/draw2020.html

As matches are played by the “play by” dates, games and scores will be fully updated on our website. - 52 -

In addition, all players who take part in a competition match will accumulate their own personal points as part of the Jubilee Cup Order of Merit, and will have the opportunity to win trophy as end of the season Singles or Pairs champion and runner up. So all to play for! On a personal note, I’d like to thank the continued support from Christer Stenbacka (Web Guru), Alan Tindall (Treasurer), and Neil Mitchell (Competition Secretary), as it is just us four who supported, and will support, near 1100 individual Essex golfers in 2020, as we did in 2019 to play competitive inter-club golf.

2019 Champion Captain Richard Bland, from Stoke by Nayland (left), with Jubilee Chairman Phil Redhead (right).
