Finally the last game off the tee was the Constable bowls, a mixed greensomes competition. This was contested by two husband and wife combinations. Next out was the Barber Cup, a singles knock-out played off handicap. This was won by Mark Theobald (9) who beat Tim Dickens (12) on the 19th hole. Mark was 2 up with 2 to play but lost both to make it all square after 18 holes and thus take it to a play-off down the first again. Unfortunately Tim’s drive caught the trees which meant he struggled to get on the green for 2. Mark’s drive down the middle gave him a straightforward win on the extra hole. Next to start was the Shaw Plate. This competition is now in it’s 3rd format but one that the players finally enjoy. This is a scratch competition for any player with a playing handicap over 8. Martin Cotton (9), one of our most consistent players over the last few years, beat Luke Crawley (9) 2 & 1. EXCEPTIONAL WINTER DRAINAGE PROPRIETORS HAVE MADE MASSIVE INVESTMENT WITH ALL NEW TORRO MACHINERY

UNLUCKY FOR ESSEX GOLFERS James Watts edged a three-man play-off at Bishop’s Stortford ames Watts (Kingsway Golf Centre) secured his first Order of Merit title with victory in J the East Region Championship at Bishop’s Stortford. Watts, 31, made a birdie at the first play-off hole to edge out David Salisbury (Three Rivers Golf and Country Club) and Scott Hudson (Warren). The trio finished 36 holes of regulation play on five-under-par and returned to the par-4 10th tee for ‘extra time’. Hudson found the left-hand rough, while Salisbury sent his drive further right than ideal. Watts was the last to play and crashed a powerful shot straight down the middle into ‘position A’, less than 50 yards from the flag. Hudson’s hopes were dashed by a tree branch as he tried to send in a low pitch. Salisbury fared better clipping his approach to 14 feet beyond the pin. But Watts had all the angles covered as his chip released perfectly, settling three feet from the flag. With Hudson out, Salisbury gave his downhill putt every chance but it trickled just past the edge of the cup. That left Watts with a golden chance to seize victory and he duly converted his short putt to

continue a fine season. Only the previous week he and his great pal Jack Winer (Abridge Golf and Country Club) had successfully defended their PGA Fourball Championship crown in Surrey. Watts said: “I’m very happy to win my first Order of Merit tournament – it’s very nice to get one under the belt. “I played nicely on the first day and pretty good in the second round without really capitalising on the back nine. Patience was the key.” Of the two runners-up Salisbury was the more frustrated, having been six-under-par with one hole left to play. He found trouble off the tee on the 18th and saw his eventual par putt roll agonisingly across the front of the cup. Hudson had more positives to take away, having bagged his best-ever finish in an Order of Merit event. Indeed the PGA trainee shot a superb fiveunder 66 on the second day to clinch his spot in the play-off. Hudson, 24, said: “It was really nice to be up there in contention. I was actually really pleased with how I dealt with everything down the stretch.”

James Watts receives the East Region Championship trophy from Bishop’s Stortford captain Terry Jack.

Trophies for the year's winners were presented by Club Captain Mick and Lady Captain Claire. As a finale, Cadet Golfer of the Year 2019 (nominated by cadet officers and assistants) was awarded to Mat Turner following a superb year of golfing success. CHELMSFORD FAIL TO LAND PRESTIGIOUS TITLE FOR THE FIRST TIME he team from City of Newcastle Golf Club in Northumberland can look forward to a trip T to France next month after storming through the field to win the English Men’s Champion Club tournament at Romford Golf Club. The Northumbrian club will be England’s representatives at the European Men’s Club Trophy at Golf du Medoc on October 24-26 after claiming their national Club title for the second time in the last three years. The victory also made up for the disappointment of narrowly missing out on defending the title last year when they finished runners-up to Castle Royal at Huddersfield. The City of Newcastle team comprising Alex Dixon, Phil Ridden and Andrew Minnikin started the final round on two over par 215 and seven shots oshots off the pace set by Royal Lytham & St Annes but they shaved nine shots off that score in the second round with Dixon carding a four under par 67, Ridden shooting a 68 and Minnikin contributing a level par 71. That was enough to see them claim a four-shot victory over Chelmsford Golf Club in Essex on five under par 421 with Northamptonshire

County one shot further back on level par 426. Romford Club Manager Richard Hall said “The Club did a fantastic job over the weekend, hosting clubs from all over England and it was disappointing that the Chelmsford just failed to bring home this title the county have never won. The teams clearly enjoyed their weekend in the local area, their only disappointment was the Sugar Hut was closed for refurbishment and they didn’t see any Towie stars.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

routine to some people can be very overwhelming, especially if you are a golfer Agym as golf itself is a very

time consuming sport. How do i fit in the gym? However, it does not have to be 2 hours 5 days a week to make a difference. Quality training over quantity of training is very important. This is where you must employ someone (a personal trainer) to write your gym programmes who can bespoke write them for you to fit into your time frame and your schedule to have optimal results. In my opinion, cardiovascular exercise i.e. running, bike, cross trainer etc. for the everyday golfer is totally unnecessary, I feel its a waste of precious training time. Golfers walk round the course and for me this is enough cardio. If you were a pro I may add in some HIIT training but I would never prioritise it. When designing programmes for golfers in my mind I ask “what functional carryover does this exercise have?” If it doesn’t then its not in the programme ... riding a bike for an hour, to me, has absolutely no functional carryover. So, how do I keep it simple for my golfers?

Golf involves your body to work together, one side of the body aids the other side to produce an explosive movement, therefore, i design programmes that integrate the body and rarely would I isolate muscle groups unless I am training a very advanced athlete. Simply, if you improve the strength of your body as a whole working together your golf will improve. An example of an integrated exercise - an exercise that will get your body more efficient at working together is a one arm dynamic cable pull. I am attaching a YouTube link below for the exercise technique. Give 15 reps each side a go and repeat 3 times. Its a very demanding exercise that uses every single muscle group in the body, just like golf! https://youtu.be/RXdTUBqIiHs Determine your goal with a trainer and then “keep it simple,” progress slowly and do what fits into your life, unmaintainable will end with you giving up and finding training overwhelming! I love to hear from people so please let me know how you get on with the exercise above.

MANON DE ROEY WINS AGAIN AT THE STOKE BY NAYLAND LETAS & WPGA INTERNATIONAL CHALLENGE Winner of the WPGA International Challenge at Stoke by Nayland Manon de Roey with l to r Tamara Unwin SbN, Susanna Rendall, SbN and Di Barnard, LETAS.

anon de Roey won the Ladies European Tour Access Series and WPGA International M Challenge at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club for the second year running and in doing so brought to mind waiting for a London bus. Just when all hope of one arriving has been abandoned, two or three turn up in quick succession, which is the case with the 27-year-old Belgian when it comes to winning tournaments. Her victory at Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa 12 months ago was her first as a professional and ended a three-year wait. Since then she has won two more tournaments: the Santander Golf Tour LETAS Valencia in July and again at the Suffolk resort. “Once you’ve had your first win you know you can do it,” she said after posting a six-under-par score of 210 for the 54-holes. “It’s definitely a weight off your shoulders. I won in Spain a couple of months ago and winning here is special because I won here before” Her latest conquest of the Gainsborough course was slightly less stressful than last year’s event which was settled by a sudden-death play-off with Lydia Hall, the defending champion. This time, by contrast, De Roey could afford to bogey the final hole and still claim the €5,600 first prize. She finished a shot clear of the trio sharing second place: My Leander of Sweden, Italy’s Lucrezia Colombotto Rosso and Alice Hewson of England.

De Roey ’s victory meant she became the first to defend the title successfully since the tournament began seven years ago and, by definition, win it twice. Now, with another win behind her, she is focusing on retaining her Tour card. “There are three LET tournaments coming up – starting in Bordeaux next week, then Barcelona, then India,” she added. “Winning here has given me a good feeling for next week.” September has been a very busy international golfing month for the award-winning, familyowned Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf, Spa & Lodges resort. The 3 day WPGA & LETAS International Challenge, in which over 100 women top professionals from all over Europe competed for a 35,000 euro pot was hosted here for the 7th year running. The event kicked off with a Pro Am tournament and Gala Dinner. BBC Look East presenter, Stewart White, was amongst the amateurs playing. The venue, which enjoys a stunning location in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and has two championship courses, also hosted the country’s first England Disability Open Championship the previous weekend. Over 40 top disabled golfers from all over Europe displayed brilliant skills during the two day event which was featured on BBC Look East TV news.

THE CENTRE STRIKE

THE PUREST FUNDAMENTAL

“Many beginners and even experienced players defeat their efforts to play golf by depending on unsuitable equipment.” - Tommy Armour “Today's clubs are so forgiving you can hit it anywhere on the face and still get a result.” A common statement but unfortunately complete rubbish. o, let me give you a piece of advice: If you S want to reach your golfing potential you need to be able to find the middle of the face. There are two causes of inconsistent ball striking - your clubs are incorrect for you or your technique needs some work. But, you cannot work on technique until you address your equipment. This may not mean new equipment, it can just be a case of modifying what you have already got to suit you better. Over the years I have read many golf books and I fail to give the author any credibility if there is no mention of the importance of centre strikes. I read a lot about swing plane and 90˚ shoulder turns but very little about where to hit the ball on the face. My favourite saying: “The club dictates the swing” Guess what ... It’s true! If your golf club does not suit you then you will make adjustments to make it work or at least get the best you can out of it. Basically, you cannot make a good swing with a poorly fitted golf club and expect to hit

the ball consistently. I have also come to the conclusion that the word ‘Standard’ is the worst word in golf and over the years has probably wrecked more people’s golf games than anything else. There is no standard, there is no standard length, no standard lie, no standard weight, no standard flex - do I need to go on? But, these are all aspects that effect striking the ball in the centre of the face. One of the first things we are taught when we start the game is how to align the head - it is incredible how many golfers I see who cannot do this due to their equipment. Your equipment should allow you to find the centre of the club, if it doesn’t then it’s wrong. With regards to hitting the ball anywhere on the face think of it like this - for every dimple you miss the sweet spot by you are losing out on both ball speed and directional control - and for what, to be ‘Standard’? I doubt that very much.

CHIP PUTT FOR THE IDEAL STRIKE O

ne requirement when putting is the angle at which the putter strikes the ball, we are looking for a fairly neutral contact. The angle at which the putter head strikes the ball assists with the “true roll” of the golf ball which ultimately affects our ability to control distance consistently. In simple terms the analogy I use is to imagine you were to bang a tack into a wall you would not strike the tack on the upswing or with a slight vertical descending blow. I would be looking for a level strike with the hammer.

1

2

During a recent putting lesson one client displayed the strike angle on the left, (Image 1) after a few practice drills using the chip putt or bellied wedge with the Sand wedge the results displayed in (Image 2) were astounding. Here is the “Magic drill” which is the ideal indoor winter putting practice. Using a Sandwedge hover the club above the equator of the ball, the idea is to strike the ball with the bottom (bouncer) of the club. If your stroke continues on a level path with no upward or downward movement the ball will run in contact with the green with no elevation. If there is any vertical movement in the stoke the ball will characteristically “chip” with slight elevation identifying a downward strike which is what we are trying to avoid. “Roll that ball low and true.” Sarah Bennett

ESSEX GIRLS SUMMER MEETING

T

he Autumn Meeting, the last event of the season for the Society of Essex Lady Captains took place at Chigwell Golf Club in mid September. This was a very popular meeting with the past and present Lady Captains, 78 ladies from 36 clubs across the County playing on the day in the drawn 4BBB competition. The ladies teed off from 12 noon in warm and overcast conditions. As the day went on the grey clouds gathered, the wind got up and eventually the rain came down. Nevertheless the ladies enjoyed the course although some found the greens tricky to master and the numerous bunkers difficult to avoid. At the end of the day the ladies were treated to a delicious cold buffet. Our thanks to Chigwell Golf Club for hosting the event and to all the staff on the day for looking after our every need. Thanks also to Kate Gadsby Lady Captain of Chigwell for joining us for the day and to Jo Davies our Vice President for coming in the afternoon to take charge of the results and present the prizes with Kate. As is often the case, the prizes were fiercely contested with 4 pairs on 39 points. 6th Caroline Fields (Braintree) & Jenny Luke (Mardyke Valley), 5th Sandra Griggs (Maylands) & Christine Berry (Belfairs), 4th June Morgan (Langdon Hills) & Roma Raymond (Five Lakes) 3rd Brenda Young (Braintree) & Pat Vincent (Chelmsford). However 2 pairs excelled and in second place with 41 points were Pauline Nash (Royal Epping) & Margaret Oliver (Orsett). But the clear winners lifting the Bradban Trophy with a fantastic score of 45 points were Lynne Southgate (The Burstead) and Carol Berry (Garon Park). It was great to see so many ladies in there pink attire out on the course, a great way to end the season. We are in the process of finalising our programme of events for 2020, details should be on our website before Christmas and we look forward to seeing our existing members and some new ones too next season. - 28 -

AIMPOINT AND WHY ITS BECOMING VITAL imPoint green reading has been around in England for 10/11 years and I have been A studying this discipline for around 10 years. I am the only certified AimPoint instructor in Essex Over this 10 year timespan it has evolved into one of the most important skills to understand for the tournament golfer and social golfers are starting to realise that the skill is an easy one to learn the basics of. The realisation that this system is based on scientific provable information has taken a little while to filter down to the man in the street but it definitely has. THE BASICS ARE AS FOLLOWS n The ball follows gravity, which means it runs down hill down slope. n The slope has a percentage value from flat. n The slope is easy to feel n The value of slope is easy to learn. n Once you can feel and put a value on the slope the break becomes obvious. n This is basic AimPoint green reading. WHY IS THIS BECOMING VITAL ESPECIALLY IN TOURNAMENT GOLF? Putts break more on fast greens and less on slow greens and part of the AimPoint system allows for calibration of the green speed. Now in tournament golf you might think that the greens are all the same speed on the different course or at least close but it does not take much to change the break value. If you take a 2% slope from 10 feet on a 10 stimp

green it will break 9.5 inches ... if you up the stimp speed to 12 the same putt breaks 12.1 inches. But the genius of the system is that you can calibrate the green speed within a couple of putts and thus increase the chances of making the putt. The basic Express read can be learnt inside 2 hours and the results are immediate The great thing is that you will be learning on every putt you hit so even misses teach you something. With the likes of Justin Rose, Adam Scott and Stacey Lewis using AimPoint there is no doubt that the system works at the highest level under the upmost pressure. If you would like any more information on AimPoint please feel free to call or email using the details below. Also if you would like to learn how to use AimPoint I coach at Abridge Golf Club. The session can be 1 on 1 or in groups the sessions are 2 hours long. The practice facilities at Abridge are fantastic and we have some great membership deals for young golfers.

Feel the slope.

GRAEME’S LONG SIX MONTHS

S

ix months can prove a long time in golf. But for Graeme Brown it seems to have passed in a flash. Graeme, the current Captain at Braintree Golf Club, took office in March and has enjoyed every minute of bring at the helm. “It’s been a busy six months with all the golfing events that have happened but things will start to ease off as we head towards the winter months,” he says.

Winners of The 2019 Barry Mann pairs Trophy Captain Graeme Brown and Vice Captain Steve Weight.

Graeme is still working so has to blend his captain’s duties with his job. But whenever he has been unable to be at the club his vice-captain Steve Weight has stepped into the breach. Graeme says the highlight of his captaincy so

far has been the two charity weekends which raised almost £5,000 from members’ contributions, “Our club professional Richard Wheeler and James Bussell have just competed in the Great East Half Marathon which has added to the pot,” says Graeme whose charity is Smile of Arran created in memory of a 13-year-old lad which aids research into cancer and is connected to Addenbrooke Hospital.” He also points to the regular Captain v Professional matches in which, so far, Graeme has an unbeaten record. “We’ve played 15 games and I’ve not been on the losing side. But it’s going to happen eventually,” he adds. Graeme has also attended every county match Braintree has been involved in with the highlight being the Leslie Wood semi-final against Upminster. “The match was tied but we lost the playoff, which was disappointing,” he says. “We also reached the last 16 of the Thornton Cup but what I enjoyed most was the spirit all the matches were played in. It was superb. “As club captain, going to these events you meet a lot of people and the feedback on the superb condition of our course at Stisted has been exceptional. It is a tribute to our greens staff. “On the home front there has been some great social events while attendance at the Summer Party, which is more informal this year, was up 25%.”

PLAYOFF DELIGHT FOR TOM NEALE n the gathering gloom of a Sunday night Tom Neale secured Colchester Golf Club's Club IChampionship.

MATABELE BOWL TRIUMPH FOR COLCHESTER olchester Golf Club Captain Jim Wilkinson welcomed Clacton’s counterpart John Kemp C and his team at the Braiswick course for the annual Matabele Bowl. Colchester having lost the match last year were not disappointed in their quest to take the trophy back from Clacton. This year the competition, which dates back to the 1950s, was played with eight pairs, four ball better ball in the Hambro format, where all matches play the full 18 holes. The number of winning holes in all matches are then totalled. Colchester were 22 up at the final count, giving them a comfortable win. The final of the Foursomes Cup saw Chris Doyle and Andrew Patrick playing Steve Jennings and Glenn Clark. Despite Clark and Jennings giving eight shots they quickly went two up but the Doyle and Patrick pairing toughed it out and the match was all square after ten holes.

Using their shots on the next two holes Doyle and Patrick established a lead that they never lost. The final score being 4&3 to record, surprisingly, Doyle’s first boarded win.

GETTING A GAPPING SESSION TO HIT MORE GREENS itting more greens is an important area to improve your scores. The more greens you H hit on average the better your score will be. On

PLAYING DISTANCE VERSUS THE ACTUAL DISTANCE - Once you have your

carry distances when you get out on the course you will have to take into account all the variables of temperature, elevation, firmness etc to make your best judgement on what the playing distance is. For instance you may have 2 different shots of a 150 yards. One may be uphill, its cold and into the wind so the playing distance will be 180 yards. The other one may be downhill, downwind and the green is firm so make have a playing distance of 120 yards. It takes some working out but along with your normal carry distances you can work out what your best choice is.

tour players are hitting 12 to 14 a round but to play to 9 handicap you just have to aim for 6 greens and just 2 per round to get to 18 handicap as a guide. Every player hits it right and left but if we can get pin high more our chances of hitting more greens goes up way up and we will start managing our games better.

COME AND HAVE A GAPPING SESSION USING SKYTRAK Try these ideas to get pin high more often. HAVE A GAPPING SESSION ON A LAUNCH MONITOR - The technology is so

good it makes it very easy to work out your club distances. You will hit 5 to 10 shots with each iron and then you will get an average carry distance. It is a quick process and you will then have your carry distances with every club in your bag. - 40 -

If you would like your won gapping session please get in contact with Matt 07808 003 619 or see go to our online booking system via southessex.glflocker.com You will leave with a full breakdown of how far you hit each club on our Skytrak.

Essex team: Captain - Lukas Warren (Thorndon Park), Kish Velani (Wanstead), Oscar Yeomans, Ben Humphrey, Shay McQueen, Jack Brown & Michael Gilbert (Chelmsford), Joe Tatam (Brentwood). Middlesex, regrettably, had one player phone in sick that Photo shows seven team members – minus Captain Lukas. morning and were unable to find a replacement at such short notice. Morning foursomes: Eamon, a Middlesex management team member, filled in in order to give all Essex players a morning game. Therefore Oscar & Joe had a good game and a walkover point. First of the other three matches to finish - Ben & Michael with an excellent 7&5 win. That was closely followed by another good result from Lukas & Kish 5&4. The first pair out, Shay & Jack, still on the course. Three up with four to play. Lost the 15th, halved the 16th, lost the 17th. Dormy one up. Hole 18 halved in par 4’s. Essex 1 up. A very close match. Foursomes: 4 - 0 Afternoon Singles: Captain Lukas elected to be the Essex player who did not get a game As happens so often a strong morning foursomes win is followed by a strongly contested afternoon singles. This was certainly the case. After ten holes Essex were up in only one (Michael), all square in two and down in four. Michael went on to win 7&6, an excellent day for him. Jack won 4&3 and Kish 3&2. Of the remaining four games three went to the 18th. Shay & Ben, both having been down, fought back to win 2 up and 1 up respectively. Indeed a tightly contested afternoon. Singles: 6 – 2 Total Match score: Essex 10 - Middlesex 2 A match played, as always by these young golfers, in excellent spirit. Thanks to Enfield Golf Club and all staff and members for being such excellent hosts. The final was now in the hands of Hertfordshire. They had a good win over Bedfordshire on 8th September, but not quite good enough to stop Essex from winning the South England League. The final will be played at Weybrook Park Golf Club, Basingstoke, on 13th October against Hampshire. Good Luck Essex.

Match Report

2019 JUNIOR FOURSOMES CHAMPIONSHIPS Old Fold Manor Golf Club – Wednesday 21 August 2019 he annual England Golf SE Group Junior team foursomes T championship was held this year on the famous Harry Colt designed Old Fold Manor course north of London in glorious summer sunshine with only a breath of wind. The course is part heathland part parkland with reasonably generous fairways and undulating putting surfaces. Although the course measures less than 6500 yards with a par of 71 a number of tricky pin positions, strategically placed trees and penalty areas put an emphasis on course management and being long of the tee was not necessarily an advantage. The format for the competition is scratch stroke play foursomes with each pair from a team of eight players playing 36 holes and the best three scores counting towards the team competition. Running in parallel with this is the individual pairs competition for the pair with the lowest 36 hole score. At lunch Essex were sitting comfortably in third place just four strokes off the leaders Sussex and full of optimism for the afternoon exploits, however foursomes is the most difficult of golf formats, but can be made even more difficult by an inability to manage a Bushnell and distinguish between yards and meters as one of our players discovered. The afternoon did not go according to the agreed lunchtime script and although Harvey Sullivan and Teddy Papple were well on course for an under par score two double bogies late in the afternoon ended their chance of lowest score on the day. Eventually with all the scores in Sussex managed to extend their lunchtime advantage winning by five strokes from Suffolk with Essex trailing in fourth spot some way behind. Overall a disappointing outcome when the day started with such promise, but as I so often report course management and club selection are key to winning these events and is what separates good golfers from the very good. Ah well better luck next year Yet again our thanks again go to Martin McDermott, Ian Jaggard and the rest of the England Golf Championship committee for putting this event together along with Old Fold Manor Golf Club and its members for the use of their excellent golf facility.

2019 LESLIE F WOOD CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL Canons Brook Golf Club – Sunday 1st September 2019 he 2019 Final between local rivals Romford and Upminster was played T on the 1st September at the venue of last year’s winners, Canons Brook Golf Club. The hosts presented the course in great condition and made all their guests most welcome throughout the day. The morning foursomes commenced in cool conditions, with a gentle autumnal breeze which blew across the course. All matches remained close during the first nine holes with slim leads being held by one side or the other. Four of the five matches eventually went down the 18th, the only one to conclude earlier than that resulted in Upminster’s only win from the morning foursomes. Romford took the lion’s share of points from the close finishes resulting in them going into lunch with a slender 2-point lead. The morning foursomes had attracted in the region of 80 supporters but this number swelled to more than 200 as the afternoon singles got underway, and this added to the great atmosphere out on the course. In the first two matches out either side took a significant early lead, but the scores after that were very close as they came through the par 3 seventh hole, and perhaps they appeared to be slightly favouring Upminster. The sizeable support for both teams were being treated to some excellent matchplay golf by two evenly matched teams. As the first four matches out concluded, Upminster recovered the lunchtime deficit and had tied the match on 4.5 points each, with most of the remaining matches too close to call. The next two matches went to the challenging par 5 18th hole. Scott Pope and Micky Nash both recorded narrow 1up victories for Upminster and their supporters started to believe a memorable victory was on the cards. Neil Packer suddenly won a few holes and recorded a further point for Upminster on the 16th hole, who now just needed a half point to clinch victory. As match 7 approached the 18th green with Romford’s Henry Styles holding a slender 1up advantage, Paul Berner left the 15th green with a 3up lead for Upminster, dormie 3, guaranteeing Upminster the half point they needed to complete a great fight back. It was an exciting conclusion to a great match, played in great spirit, both Clubs can be proud of the efforts of their teams. The Essex Golf Union would like to thank Canons Brook Golf Club for hosting the event and their wonderful hospitality, and also the many spectators who came to enthusiastically support both teams and make it a special day. - 43 -

Seniors County Team League Match (South Eastern Group North)

ESSEX v HERTFORDSHIRE Boyce Hill Golf Club – Monday 2nd September 2019

ssex completed their fine season of league matches by winning their final match against Hertfordshire, the only team that could have taken the title from them. EEssex had taken this final league match very seriously and had been practicing at the venue, Boyce Hill under the guidance of the two local players in their side, Mark Stones and Chris Aukett. The local knowledge they gained proved invaluable. They were led out my Mark Stones who had an exceptionally tight match going to the 17th, 1 down, his opponent pulled his approach to the green, made 5 and Mark made his par and was all square going to the last. Mark was on the middle of the green and made his 3, his opponent missed the green to the right, chipped up and missed his putt to lose the hole. The next two matches were won quite comfortably by Ian Moore and Mike Partridge. The fourth game out was John Wright who was having trouble on the greens and was well beaten by ex-Hainault golfer Tyrone Carter. Steve Rooney was having a very stern test against possibly the best Golfer on the Hertfordshire side, John Ambridge Steve went to the 18th 1 up, got his 3 and the half, to win the match. Next up was Steve Ronney’s two Orsett colleagues, unfortunately Mark Whiten suffered a heavy defeat to Lewis Watcham, but Jeff Mathewson came to the 18th 1 up, he then won the 18th to finish 2 up. Chris Bellamy lost out to very reliable golfer Phil Embleton, Chris Aukett came to the 18th 1 down but managed to win the hole and record a half. Rob Douglas bringing up the rear, managed to win with 2 holes left and Essex were home with a fine win. Next, we go to the league final between the winner of the Southern League which is due to be played at Muswell Hill on 16th October.

ESSEX SENIORS TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP 2019 FINAL The Rayleigh Club – Wednesday 4th September 2019 he 2019 Seniors Team Championship was played at T The Rayleigh Club on 4th September between Bentley and The Warren Golf Clubs. The two teams set out a very autumnal afternoon, a little sunshine but a cool strengthening breeze, which would test the players on a course which was in great condition. The fairways remained firm even after some rain the previous day, as we looked forward to an afternoon of tense matchplay golf. As the matches progressed through the 11th hole the final looked to be fairly evenly balanced between the sides with a number of matches All Square, suggesting either team could win the day. The team from The Warren were giving a few shots away to their opponents in all the matches, and by this time most of the shots had been used, so perhaps they were the more optimistic of the two sides. However, in matches 2 and 3 the Bentley players managed to forge ahead and secure early points on the board. Match 1 was a close fought match all the way round with both players playing great golf, with its final conclusion on the 18th green securing a further point for Bentley by the narrowest of margins. In match 4 Andy Eaton secured the first point for The Warren on the 18th green, and this was quickly followed by another point from Match 6. As match 5 went down the 18th All Square news came in that Bentley had secured another win in match 7, and were well up in match 9, so The Warren needed some good news. Unfortunately, a good shot from Eric Derham to the green was caught by that treacherous cross wind and finished in the right hand pond. His opponent, Brian Mead, played ‘safe’ finishing a yard short of another penalty area with the aid of a post. From where he was able to close out his match to take the Bentley team to the brink of victory. The Warren’s fate was sealed shortly after as news came in that match 10 had gone to Bentley, securing them their 6th point, enough to ensure they would lift the Trophy. The large number of supporters in attendance had been treated to an exciting afternoon of golf. The final result was 7.5 to 3.5 to Bentley Golf Club. After the presentation ceremony the players and representatives of both Clubs combined for an evening of good humour and were treated to an excellent meal from their hosts. The Essex Golf Union would like to thank The Rayleigh Club for hosting the event and their hospitality, it was a good match played in the best spirit of golf. - 45 -

THORNTON CHALLENGE CUP FINAL Colchester Golf Club – Sunday 8th September he 2019 final was played on 8th September between the holders T Chelmsford and West Essex, on a very well presented Colchester golf course. The morning foursomes commenced in sunny autumnal conditions with a cool breeze. There was little between the two sides as the morning matches passed the halfway stage, apart from in match 3 where the Chelmsford pairing of Curtis Knipes & Harvey Sullivan were building a commanding lead. As the morning started to draw to a close West Essex’ top pairing of Nick Pledger & Timmy Moncur secured a first point in match 1, just after Chelmsford’s Curtis & Harvey closed out their match with an 8&6 win, four under par for the 12 holes they played. The teams shared the points from matches 2 and 4, which left match 5 to decide the lunchtime position. This had been a close battle all the way round, but eventually concluded on the 17th hole, a narrow 2&1 victory to Chelmsford. Both teams headed for lunch with Chelmsford holding a 1 point lead. By the time the afternoon singles commenced the number of supporters following the matches had swelled to over 100, and they were being treated to some excellent matchplay golf. West Essex needed some positive results from the early singles matches, but Chelmsford’s Brandon Meads had other ideas, racing into an early lead. Match 2 had thrown together a very intriguing tie, and by the 9th hole Timmy Moncur had built a good lead on his Chelmsford opponent, Arron Edwards-Hill. Back in match 1 Nick Pledger fought his way back into his match and secured a vital point for West Essex, and with Timmy Moncur closing his match out on the 15th green, they had the start they had wanted. Chelmsford managed good wins from Jack Brown, Alex Bradley, and Ben Humphrey to swing things back in their favour, only for Matt Forster to birdie the 18th for a narrow 1up victory and Jack Heasman to seal a good 5&4 win to put the tie in the balance at 6 points each, with three matches left on the course. In match 7 Curtis Knipes won the 15th hole to go dormie 3up, but his opponent, John Moncur, wasn’t giving up and won the 16th and 17th to take the match to the final hole. Meanwhile Lewis Wright went 3up at the 15th for Chelmsford and closed his match out on the - 46 -

16th hole to take his team to 7 points and Oscar Yeomans also won the 15th to go dormie 3up. With guaranteed half points in the two remaining matches Chelmsford had secured a thrilling victory. The final match result was 9 – 6 in Chelmsford’s favour. It was an excellent day of golf played between two teams who clearly had great respect for each other. Our thanks to Colchester Golf Club for hosting the match at relatively short notice and providing excellent hospitality for this prestigious final. Also to the spectators, for helping create a great atmosphere and providing encouragement to both teams throughout the day.

THE ROMFORD TROPHY 2019 Romford Golf Club – Friday 6th September2019

he end of summer signifies the Curtis Knipes. Arron Edwards Hill. arrival of the County’s autumn swing the first event of which is The Romford Trophy, the penultimate Order of Merit event of the year. This event has been hosted by Romford Golf Club since 1975 and invariably attracts a very strong field with this year being no exception. Amongst the entries were Jack Brown fresh from his success at the South East of England Links Championship the previous week, Arron Edwards Hill the current trophy holder and also a winner of the North of Ireland Open together with Open Qualifier and current English Champion of Champions Curtis Knipes. On this grey September morning the chilly northerly breeze was strong enough to influence club selection and keep even the best players honest. But despite the wind with many of the county’s leading plus handicap golfers on parade it was inevitable that there would be a number of sub-par rounds at the halfway stage. Indeed the joint clubhouse leaders at lunch were the very consistent Shay McQueen alongside Curtis Knipes both with four under par rounds of 67 with Curtis going out in an impressive 31 strokes. They were followed one stroke back by former Essex cricketer Kishen Velani on 68 and Arron Edwards Hill a further stroke adrift on 69. With the post lunch weather showing no sign of improving Curtis Knipes kicked his afternoon round off with a double bogey at the first, which he followed up with another bogey at hole four relegating him to -1 for the day, however by the turn birdies on 5, 6 and 9 helped him back to where he started the afternoon round. By way of contrast Shay McQueen followed his bogey on the 2nd with four consecutive birdies taking his score at the turn to 7 under for the day and a timely eagle from Kishen Velani at the 5th left him one stroke adrift of Shay. A pair of birdies at the (Continued on the next page).

opening holes elevated Arron to four under, but still trailing the leader by three strokes. We hear time and again that tournaments are won and lost on the final nine holes and this year’s Romford Trophy could not illustrate that mantra better. As the weather changed and the sun made an appearance the temperature rose, so began the turnaround in fortunes. Andrew Reynolds of Benton Hall, who started his afternoon well adrift of the leaders at one over par proceeded to put together the low round of the day 66, which included six birdies and one bogey and enough to earn him top prize in the handicap section with five handicapper Tom Gale from Playgolf Colchester a very creditable runner-up. At the halfway point in the afternoon one could be forgiven for thinking that the winner of this prestigious county event would be between Kishen Velani and Shay McQueen, indeed even more so after 13 holes when both players were seven under par, but the game of golf is not that simple. Curtis Knipes who started his afternoon round so poorly pressed the reset button and proceeded to reel off six birdies including three in the final four holes. Whilst Arron Edwards Hill having bagged a couple of bogies on the inward nine consolidated his round with three birdies in the final four which was enough to overhaul Shay McQueen and Kishen Velani, whose rounds faltered in the race for the line. Having won this trophy for the past two years Arron’s quest for a third was a bold one, but this year thwarted by Curtis Knipes the man who has been on his tail at both those previous victories. Arron was awarded second prize on countback from Kishen Velani with Shay McQueen fourth. Fourteen year old Harley Smith continues to impress and whilst he came away empty handed from this event he will without question win many tournaments in the years to come. In their 125th year our special thanks go to John Fitch and Romford Golf Club for their hospitality and again facilitating the County. To mark their anniversary the England Champion Club Tournament will be held at Romford GC on 21st and 22nd of September when Essex will be represented by a three man team from Thornton Curtis Knipes with Brian Collins EGU President and Cup and Esplen Trophy winners Chelmsford. JOHN DAY TROPHY FINAL Three Rivers Golf & Country Club – Wednesday 11th September 2019 he setting for the 2019 John Day Trophy T final was Three Rivers Golf & Country Club, the winners of the inaugural final last year. The two finalists who had made it through five rounds of competition matchplay this year were from Burnham on Crouch and Stoke by Nayland. The two teams set out in overcast weather conditions for a late summer afternoon of tense matchplay golf on a well prepared golf course. As the matches progressed through the 9th hole the final looked to be slightly favouring the Stoke by Nayland team, but a number of matches were fairly evenly balanced between the sides with a few too close to call. As the last groups commenced their back nine holes the clouds cleared, and the sun provided the players and numerous spectators with a fine late summer afternoon to enjoy. A few matches reached an early conclusion, two points on the board for Stoke by Nayland and one to the Burnham team. Match 1 finished on the 17th hole with another win for Stoke by Nayland enhancing their slender lead. However, all was not lost for Burnham as match 6 finished next with a 1up result in their favour, and this was quickly followed up with a 2up victory in match 4 and a 2&1 victory in match 7. So, Burnham now held a 4 – 3 lead with the last two matches left out on the course. In match 8, Stoke by Nayland held a 1up advantage on the 18th tee, and both players were on the green in three shots. Adrian Cherry left his long approach putt close to the hole for a conceded 5, but Fred Banfield holed his 20-foot putt to win the hole for Burnham and a vital half point. At this time both playoff players made their way nervously to the practice area to warm up for the potential playoff decider. Match 9 was now on the 18th hole, again with Stoke by Nayland holding a 1up lead. Both players made the green in 3, but both missed short putts, giving Stoke by Nayland the point to take the overall match into a tie. The playoff commenced on the first hole, with a large group of support following the two players. Malcolm Norton got into trouble from the tee and could not match the par 4 made by Burnham’s Stephen Hull. So, the destination of the Trophy was decided, it was going east to Burnham on Crouch. After the presentation ceremony the players and representatives of both Clubs enjoyed the hospitality of their hosts and confirmed their appreciation for the Essex Golf Union running this competition. The Essex Golf Union would like to thank Three Rivers for hosting the event, it was a most enjoyable afternoon with golf played in the best spirit of the game. - 49 -

UPMINSTER TROPHIES 2019 Upminster Golf Club – Saturday 14th September 2019 gloriously sunny autumn morning greeted competitors A for the county’s final individual stroke play Championship of the season and with only a hint of a breeze some low scoring should be on the cards. The operative word here is “should”, but with slick greens despite a par of 69 the Upminster course was not to be taken lightly. Indeed the fact that over the day only two players broke par is a testament to the challenge it presented players. The morning was dominated by an excellent 2 under par 67 from Bailee Curran whose four bogies were balanced by four birdies with the highlight of his round being an ace at the 142 yard fourth hole. Zac Chegwidden and Martin Blake enjoyed lunch in second place with level par rounds and although Zac Alex Christie. Zac Chegwidden. matched his 3 birdies with bogies Martin needed an eagle on the par 5 17th to balance the books. But for his double bogey at the par 3 16th Ben Humphrey would have also been satisfied with his morning work, but had to settle for a two over 71. Playing in the last group Alex Christie returned to the clubhouse with a four over par round of 73 which included a triple bogey on the 8th and was saved from near disaster by birdies on 16, 17 and 18. The afternoon temperature had risen significantly from the early morning as did the quality of Alex Christie’s golf who in the space of nine holes went from four over to one under playing the outward nine in a remarkable 28 strokes. With the only par fives on the return nine Alex could be forgiven for dreaming of a sub 60 round. Despite Alex’s antics after 11 holes the leader on the course was still Bailee Curran who had methodically plotted his way with consecutive pars and remained two under. As always seems to be the case, the back nine sorts out what order the prizes would be awarded and of the five leaders only Zac Chegwidden managed to complete the inward journey better

than par. A triple bogey on 14 followed by a bogey on the next hole put paid to Ben Humphrey’s chances of winning even with the final birdie. Similarly Martin Blake’s mixture of all sorts on the final third of the round relegated him to five over par for the day. Once the scorecards had been audited the prizes were handed out with Zac Chegwidden declared winner of the Upminster Bowl awarded to players under the age of 25, Bailee Curran in second and Ben Humphrey third. The Upminster Trophy for players over Alex Christie, Lukas Warren and Zac Chegwidden. the age of 25 was awarded to Alex Christie, with Martin Blake a little way behind in second place. However special mention must go to veteran John Wright, who captured third place from much younger competitors. Our thanks go to Upminster Golf Club and the members for giving up the course for the day and providing a facility in such fine condition as was the catering. Final thanks go to Roger Walmsley our immediate past President of Essex Golf Union as well as past Captain of Upminster Golf Club who presented the prizes.

In the third match Ilyas Musa and Mo Patel nudged Wollston Manor back into the lead with a 3&2 win on the 16th green. SCRATCH LEAGUE FINAL Frinton Golf Club – Sunday 15th September 2019

he 2019 Youth Shield final was played at Frinton Golf Club on Sunday 15th September with Park playing against 2017 winners, Chelmsford. TAThondon gentle breeze with a little autumn sunshine braking through the clouds greeted the players on the first tee. The standard of golf on display was excellent and kept both sets of supporters entertained throughout the final. Junior county players William Horne ,Thorndon Park, and Harvey Sullivan, Chelmsford, went out in match 1 and the anticipated epic encounter did not disappoint. Will Horne started the better of the two and through 9 holes held a 3up lead. But Harvey was not done and by the 17th tee had reduced the deficit to just 1 down. Harvey managed a win on the par 5 18th to finally get back to all square and take the match into extra holes. Meanwhile in match 2 Sophie Wheeler registered Thorndon Park’s first point with a 3&2 win over Lewis Wright, and in match 3 Louis Vallis made it two points for Thorndon Park with a 2&1 victory. Matt O’Connor got Chelmsford on the scoreboard with a 3&1 win over Alex Maplesden in match 4. Harvey and Will halved their first extra hole, and this match now looked as though it was going to be the decider as Harry Crocker was well up for Chelmsford in match 5. On the 2nd tee Harvey missed the fairway left but Will’s driver broke as he was playing his tee shot causing his ball to veer right into a hedge, a cruel piece of bad luck. As they both arrived at the green Will graciously conceded defeat to Harvey who had played an excellent approach shot onto the green in two. At the same moment Harry Crocker completed his match with a 3&2 win for Chelmsford, giving them an overall 3 – 2 victory. On receiving the Youth Shield trophy Chelmsford team Captain, Carter Rowe, said it was a great match and congratulated Thorndon Park on making it so. Our congratulations to Chelmsford on their victory. Many thanks to Frinton Golf Club for hosting this event as part of our finals day. - 54 -

REBECCA EARL PROGRESSION AS A TEENAGER TO ENGLISH CHAMPION AT 19! n August 22nd 2019 at Purdis Heath, Rebecca Earl became The English Women’s O Open Amateur Strokeplay Champion. She won with a -2 aggregate of 286 from a quality field, including at -1 Lily May Humphries. Rebecca came out on top with a final round score of 73 to go with the previous rounds of 70, 71 and 72. I first met Rebecca in the Spring of 2015. It was through Essex Golfer Magazine that herself and her Dad saw an article on Putting and decided to come and see me. During that Summer, She won as a 15 year old amateur golfer at a WPGA event at South Herts

with -4 and then was invited to play on The LET Access Tour at Stoke By Nayland. The following year in 2016 she won The Hertfordshire Girls Championship and then in 2017, she won The Hertfordshire Ladies Championship. Over the years our main Focus has been to develop her Putting. We have done that by understanding that set-up is the initial key. As an Upper Body Person and her left eye being

dominant her set-up has had to reflect that and also how she sees the line of the Putt and the way her Putting Stroke is. There are other unique factors as well! This has also translated into Chipping. Two weeks before her victory at Purdis Heath, we focused on those fundamentals in her Putting to help her Chipping and also to help free her mind to allow doing and not thinking. Rebecca acknowledged that this was a contributing factor in her Winning. We have worked on course strategy at a couple of events, which has been invaluable to her progression at Tournaments. On her last lesson with me before the English Amateur, we did a Putting drill by firstly rolling a ball and then watching that ball to its finish. Then Putt another ball to not only touch that ball but basically replace where that ball was, as though the original ball had not moved from it’s spot. You then start understanding slope and speed and then replicating this with your Putt. It helps the Brain to Train by using your eyes and then see if you can replicate what you saw with your action, ie Your Putting Stroke. I am immensely proud of her recent achievement and her previous Victories that have contributed to her continued progression as a Golfer. Rebecca is a great student of the game and she will continue to develop her Golf whilst at College in America. Well done from me and everyone who has helped her over the years. Happy Golfing,

AGAINST ALL ODDS! s the summer season drifts into autumn, and winter, how has your golf been? A great A season or one that you’d like to improve on next year? How many times have you ‘dealt’ with your golf this year? By that, I mean, actually applied yourself for the whole round?

Many of us, perhaps yourself included, can get into a situation where we have a couple of difficult holes in a round and then subsequently ‘give up’ for the rest of the round? I’ve talked about momentum in a round of golf many times before, and it can certainly work for you (as well as against)! Just because you’ve missed a couple of putts, doesn’t mean the next one will be missed. Just because you have duffed a few chips, what’s to say the next one won’t go straight in the hole? Three events I want to focus on in this issue of Essex Golfer, two that you’ll have heard of, one that you haven’t. Those that watched the Solheim Cup are maybe, still amazed that Europe pulled off a victory? Coming down the stretch with the scores reasonably level, there was far too much red on the remaining matches for a European win. A point here and a point there, over the closing holes meant that with a successful final putt, Suzann Pettersen would achieve a European victory. The rest is history. It would have been easy for the whole team to resign themselves to the fact, 20 minutes earlier, that the American team would win. Closer to home, I spent time at Wentworth for the BMW PGA Championship. Absolutely delighted that former Masters Champion, Danny Willett captured the trophy, his first victory on home soil. Level at the start of the final round

with Jon Rahm, he didn’t have it all plain sailing, as at the 11th he took four shots to reach the green, having encountered trees, heather and sand… yet rolled the putt in for a bogey (which felt like a Birdie I’m sure!) Having a two shot lead cut to just one and Rahm breathing down his neck, it was still refreshing to see Willett laughing and chatting with his caddy. Remember, you can only control what you do, and it is a fact that you swing and play much better when you are relaxed. Anxiety and anger are a recipe for disaster. Finally this month, I want to relay another story of never giving up (although this one wasn’t televised or came anywhere near the prize money that Willett received!) Playing a match play format at Woking Golf Club recently, I found myself 6 down standing on the 11th tee. Wanting to ‘avoid the dog licence’ I applied some key principles of The Mind Zone, and drew level after the 16th. A cheeky par win on the 17th and a par for us both on the 18th meant a victory. As we shook hands, he just said ‘I don’t know how you did that’… at which point I handed him a Mind Zone card! But seriously, I don’t recount this story to show off or impress you, but if you stick to the task in hand, then anything is possible. For those that follow my social media, you’ll also know I am looking for a venue to host a Mind Zone evening later this year. If you have that venue, please drop me a line.

FIRST STEP GOLF DAY F

and children at a time of great need for them” Beresford (Estate Agents) won the best team award, and also, one of their team – Jeremy Stubbings was the individual winner. Mark further commented, “in addition to West and Co who were our main sponsor, all 19 holes were generously sponsored (yes, including the bar) by local families and businesses, and we were able to launch our Role of Honour. Every hole was sponsored by a family that had been at First Step over the years, featuring their families and child’s story, and share the way in which they have been supported by First Step and the difference it has made. These stories were also featured in the Golf Programme. If you would like further information, or would like to do something to support First Step, please do not hesitate to contact Mark Halls at mark.halls@firststep.org.uk.

riday 20th September saw the First Step Golf Day, in partnership with West & Coe. It was a beautiful day, and 79 Golfers took part raising in excess of £12,500 for the Charity that supports Families of Children with special needs or disabilities.

Mark Halls, CEO of the charity said “the day was an enormous success. Since losing the Local Authority funding back in March 2017, we are now almost entirely dependant of the generosity of our donors, grant funders and supporters, and days like these are central to raising the funding that we need to continue supporting the families

CARLY BRAVES THE SHAVE n Saturday 14th September Carly Smith a in house caterer at Ilford Golf Club decided O to ‘Brave the Shave’ and raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Having watched ITV’s This Morning's Brave The Shave and having personally had Macmillan help her family, she decided to brave the shave herself and raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support so they can continue their amazing selfless work. The Shave took place at Ilford Golf Club, where the Captain George Durrant took to the clippers and personally shaved her head in the middle of the clubhouse in front of 30/40 members and supporters. She managed to raise with the help of members, family and friends an amazing £1,728.85!

Now we know why they call Ilford the friendliest Golf Club in Essex!

The Jubilee Cup Update from Jubilee Cup Committee, sponsored by Seabrook Warehousing, and reported by Chairman Phil Redhead

Congratulations to THIRD time Jubilee Cup Champions Stoke by Nayland defeating Playgolf Colchester on 29th September 2019 usy month in the 2019 Competition! Moving on from our Semi Finals B in early September – thanks to our host clubs Crondon Park and Woolston Manor for offering up their courses to hold these key matches – which saw both Burnham on Crouch and Harwich & Dovercourt, fall by the wayside to our finalists. Semi-Final 1 – Stoke by Nayland defeated Burnham on Crouch, 6 &3 Semi-Final 2 – Playgolf Colchester defeated Harwich & Dovercourt, 5 & 4

Both matches were very closely contested, and for the majority of the matches the trend was either the reverse of the final scoring or indeed tightly compacted. Full results shown down to individual match levels on our website, and 2019 Champion Captain Richard Bland, from Stoke by Nayland (on left), with proved key for Order of Merit final results also to singles and pairs players. The Final day was also hotly contested, and gloriously hosted by Canons Jubilee Chairman Phil Redhead. Brook Golf Club - our full thanks to Sandra, Neil and the Canons Brook crew for a fantastic event, and delicious meal and presentation event afterwards. The day was forecast to be extremely miserable (weather-wise), and a late tee caused some Committee concern as to failing light. As expected though, fierce matches ensued. However they still Burnham on Crouch. Harwich & Dovercourt. were played in the friendly spirit that we come to expect with the Jubilee Cup and our mid-handicap players. 5&4 is very much representative of the competitiveness of the match throughout, with Playgolf having initial dominance on the roving scoreboard. As the day progressed, Playgolf Colchester

Stoke by Nayland.

a more even score of All Squares appeared on some of the games, leading us down to just two crucial matches. The final Singles match of Playgolf Captain Matt Clark against SBN’s Richard Fryer was squared on the downhill par 4, 17th hole, after Rich knocked it to a few feet from the fairway bunker. Fortunes turned however on the 18th tee, as Richard’s tee shot very nearly found OOB, but Playgolf ’s steely captain made the best drive of the day, straight down the middle (much to the chagrin of his caddie, who was quietly suggesting a safe 4 iron!!). Fortune favoured the brave. however, and Matt won his match on the 18th to make the overall standing as 4 points each to both teams. Lastly then, we all raced over the 6th hole where the final Pairs match was playing its 17th hole. Darkness and rain were descending at this point, but the full teams and supporters followed the four-ball down the fairway, and the competitive carried on with an excellent punch out of bunker, and some good putts, to secure the SBN partnership of Steve Martin and Adrian Cherry and 2&1 victory – and ultimately to secure Stoke by Nayland’s third consecutive Jubilee Cup Championship. Result 5&4 against Matt and his Playgolf Colchester runners up.

JUBILEE CUP ORDER OF MERIT FINAL POSITIONS All individual player and Pairs results are showcased on the Order of Merit tables within our website, and as we watched the Finals at Canons Brook there were ten competing players who could gain position and award based upon a positive result.

Matt is seen here with myself as Jubilee Chairman, and proud to hand his trophy.

Despite a great performance from Steve Rattray from Crondon Park into the Semis, the Finals saw two Playgolf Colchester players gain much ground and taking both Runner Up position (for Alan Smith and his 5.5 points), and ultimately Jubilee Cup Singles OoM winner, Captain Matt Clark with two losses and six wins in 2019. A very different position with the Doubles. Following the Semi Finals, some great scoring by the Harwich & Dovercourt partnership of Rod Noakes and Nigel Carpenter meant that I had the pleasure of their company to present them with their shared Winner trophies at Canons Brook. In addition, an improved position by Playgolf Colchester players Dan Weston and Tim Bailey saw them make ground, but with Dan having a better hole difference and therefore securing the Runner Up position alone. Thank you to all competing clubs and all your players – your feedback has been exceptional this year, and from Neil, Alan, Christer and myself, we wish to thank you for all playing in the spirit that we try and uphold.

Now with the 2019 competition coming to close in September, we are now looking forward to the 2020 competition where nearly 50 Essex clubs will be competing in the mid-handicap stakes. Our Annual General Meeting, and the Draw for the 2020 Leagues, will take place at Colchester Golf Club on 16th October - let’s see who will be competing to knock Stoke by Nayland off their current Championship perch.

All the best

Phil
