ENGLAND’S LEADING WOMEN AND GIRLS SET FOR 2020 SEASON E

ngland Golf has named the players who will make up the women's and girls' squads for 2020. Four of the country’s top talents will lead the way for the women in the season ahead. Reigning Women’s Amateur champion Emily Toy is named alongside a three-time 2019 tournament winner and Curtis Cup player, Lily May Humphreys.

Charlotte Heath, who started this year by winning the Australian Women’s Amateur Championship, is joined by the 2019 Justin Rose Telegraph Junior Masters winner, Mimi Rhodes. All four are pictured above. The girls’ squad features real strength in depth. Northumberland trio Rosie Belsham, Jess Baker and Rachel Gourley are joined by Surrey’s Lottie Woad and Rafiah Banday. Cumbria’s Caitlin Whitehead and US-based Ellie Gower complete the seven-strong squad. Women’s performance manager, Rebecca Hembrough, insists the job of selecting the squads for 2020 was trickier than ever due to the quality of players at all levels of the women’s and girls’ game.

“We are very excited to finally announce the national squads for 2020,” said Hembrough. “They are a strong and dedicated group of young women that have been challenging themselves and one another with the support of the coaching programme since October. “There were some extremely tough decisions to make, but the squad sizes were reduced to provide more individualised coaching support with an eye on a big year at the Europeans, Home Internationals and World Amateur Team Championships. “We fully envisage selections to continue to be very competitive this year and we’re really excited by this.” The Club de Golf Escorpion in Valencia, Spain will stage the European Ladies’ Team Championships between July 7-11. On the same dates, the European Girls’ Team Championships will take place at Rosa GC in Poland. The Home Internationals will take place at Royal St David’s Golf Club in Harlech, Wales between August 5-7. England’s women and girls will defend titles won last year at a rain-soaked Downfield Golf Club in Dundee. The 2020 World Amateur Team championships will be held at the Tanah Merah Country Club in Singapore between October 14-17 after organisers switched the event from its original venue in Hong Kong. Both the women’s and girls’ squads will fly to Quinta Do Lago in Portugal over the coming days for a warm-weather training camp as they continue preparations for the season.

WOMEN’S GOLF DAY IS BACK AND LOCATIONS CAN SIGN UP FOR FREE! W

omen’s golf is enjoying a resurgence that is long overdue. Over the last five years, we have seen an increase in the number of female Tour events, mixed events taking root around the globe and a dedicated day to celebrate the female game; Women’s Golf Day. This is the fastest growing movement in golf with more than 900 events taking place in a staggering 52 countries in 2019. As part of its ongoing commitment to have even more golf locations and people participate in Women’s Golf Day on June 2, 2020, the team behind WGD is offering FREE location registration with code VIP2020 to anyone signing up before March 1st. People around the world are already taking advantage of the FREE offer by signing up for the June 2nd, 2020 global event. The 5th edition of Women’s Golf Day brings with it a new website and an expanding global reach. Women’s Golf Day events now takes place in all continents across the world which means some exciting changes for the campaign as Elisa Gaudet, founder of Women’s Golf Day explains, “We are extremely proud of the number of countries around the world who have embraced Women’s Golf Day. Golf is a fabulous sport that brings people of all nations together. “Our official birthday will always be the first Tuesday in June, but with our global reach comes a responsibility to cater for everyone. This means that there will be some events taking place a few days

prior in the build up to our 5th birthday on June 2nd making the countdown even more exciting than in previous years!” The Leadbetter Golf Academy World Headquarters at Champions Gate in Orlando, Florida hosted an extremely successful and well received Women’s Golf Day event in 2019 that welcomed over 125 women and was covered on Golf Channel. Following up from that success they are encouraging all of the David Leadbetter Academies, reaching across 4 continents, to host a WGD event and participate in the day on June 2nd, 2020. “Women’s Golf Day is a real celebration and a window to what the modern game is all about. It is so wonderful to see how the game has progressed, in particular with all the young girls taking up the game,” commented David Leadbetter. “I have a vested interest in women’s golf, having coached some of the world’s top players through the years, like Seri Pak and Michelle Wie but closer to home, my wife Kelly, former LPGA tour player and my daughter Hally, a fine player, who heads up social media for Golf Digest. Sadly the day is being held within a few months of the passing of one of history’s finest players, man or woman, Mickey Wright. Have a great www.womensgolfday.com day one and all.”

CLUBS TO HIRE MAKES ITS POINT WITH NEW LOYALTY SCHEME

G

olfers hiring their clubs through leading golf club rental company Clubs to Hire can now be rewarded with money off their next set, thanks to a new loyalty scheme. The Dublin-based company has launched a points-based loyalty system based on the value of the golfer’s booking. The loyalty points earned can then be used against future bookings and purchases. Clubs to Hire gives golfers the opportunity to play with some of the best clubs on the market, offering the latest clubs from some of golf’s leading brands, including PXG, TaylorMade, Ping, Callaway, Titleist, Mizuno and Wilson Staff. Available in 25 popular golfing regions around the globe, the company removes the hassle of taking golf clubs abroad by renting sets from just €40 per week – often less than airlines will charge to take clubs on a flight. The loyalty scheme is available to all members – registration to which is available during the booking process – and can be redeemed at any point, so golfers have the option to build up their points to a potential free hire in the future.

The attractive scheme, which has already given 65,000 clients free loyalty points for past business, also allows members to adjust their bookings and receive bonus points for activating an account. There is no tiered system, meaning members get rewarded immediately. Clubs to Hire founder Tony Judge said: “We have a lot of repeat business and most of our customers are extremely loyal and will use Clubs to Hire for all of their golf trips. “Once people use Clubs to Hire, they rarely go back to bringing their own clubs, as they often get better and more up-todate clubs when hiring through us and it’s just as cost effective. We have been exploring ways to reward and thank our regular customers for some time now and this new loyalty scheme will benefit a lot of golfers who frequently travel abroad to play.” Group bookings will also be rewarded through the new loyalty scheme – with free sets, free golf balls and the latest TaylorMade holdalls available as prizes for the group. Launched in 2010, Clubs to Hire will celebrate its 10th anniversary this year, and the company has grown from strength to strength. It now handles more than 300,000 annual visits to its website and more than 60,000 bookings for rental clubs at 25 locations worldwide, including popular golfing regions in the USA, Thailand, Australia, South Africa and five countries across the Mediterranean. Clubs are available for left or right-handed men or women and can either be waiting at the airport or delivered directly to the golfer’s hotel. Clients can also add shoe rental, balls, tees and hats to their order.

NESTA WINS STABLEFORD A

fter weeks of inactivity the first stirrings of 2020 golf appeared at Colchester Golf Club with the ladies playing a fourteen hole stableford. With conditions underfoot still wet after the recent rains and the trolley ban still being in force, the ladies had to carry which saw a much reduced field, just thirty ladies played the course. In Division One Nesta James playing off 20 handicap handed in a card with 27 points with Annie Johnston taking second position with 22. Division Two provided an even bigger gap between the winner and second place with Linda Freeman (21) carding 25 points and Fiona Prentice also playing off twenty-one handicap returning 18 points. Division Three was no different in so far as Lisa Free (35) returned 27 points and second placed Caroline Slagle handed in 23 points. Likewise in Division Four where new member and new to golf Caroline Hogan scored 28 points from her 54 handicap which was the best score by any of the ladies on the day. Helen Allen (39) slotted into second spot in this Division with 20 points.

Nesta James.

WENDYS THYMIC FUNDRAISER JUNE 18TH 2020

O

nce again we will be hosting ever popular Wendy’s Thymic Research Charity Day at Three Rivers Golf Club. This year we have also decided to support the locally based Helen Rollason cancer charity. This organisation was very close to my good friend and PGA colleague Beverly Lewis who sadly succumbed to leukaemia late last year. This event will be a day of celebration of Wendy and Bev’s love of golf with the aim to raise awareness and significant funds towards both charities. We are inviting teams of 4 ladies and men in any combination, please look at your diaries and if you are able to join us please look at sarahbennettgolf.co.uk under the Events tab for further details and entry form.

PADDY STORMS TO TROPHY WIN

THE ESSEX SENIORS STABLEFORD

R

ecently at The Essex Golf and Country Club 24 hardy Seniors braved the atrocious ground conditions and played a non-qualifying Stableford. The winner with an excellent 37 stableford points (considering the conditions) and winning a bottle of fine wine was 16 handicapper Keith Harris, Winner of the 9 hole competition, also winning a bottle of wine was 19 handicapper Tim Gleed with 15 Stableford points.

P

laygolf Seniors competed for their first trophy of the year, appropriately named The New Year Cup. Head and shoulders above the field was the very impressive Paddy Hanvey (10) recording 2 double bogeys, 4 bogeys, 11 pars and a birdie for a round of 77 nett 67 on his way to winning the trophy. Paddy was the former manager of Playgolf until his recent retirement and has stormed into the senior section with his coming of age to play as a senior. There was a clutch of players on nett 70, but on countback Bernard Keyes (25) was second and David Field (21) third. Two players received a sleeve of balls for their birdies on the par 3 holes, Terry Pendleton on the 3rd and Tony Mann on the 16th.

Keith Harris being presented with his prize by Seniors Captain Jeff Robinson.

PLAYGOLF COLCHESTER SENIORS

P

laygolf Colchester Seniors played their annual Two Clubs and a Putter Competition in spring-like conditions. Bernard Keyes (25) chose his best two clubs to accompany his putter, coming in four points clear of the rest of the field with 36 points. Will Elder (12) did well off his handicap to finish second with 32 points. Steve Dale (25) was third, beating Derek Manister on count back, both scoring 30 points. Will Elder and Derek Manister both received a sleeve of balls for their birdies on the third hole but a rare birdie on the extremely difficult parthree, fifth hole saw Greg King play two magnificent shots to secure his sleeve of balls.

Bernie Keyes Winner in the seniors.

The Doctor Will See You Now !

“Well, Mr X you certainly do have a very nasty rash on your arm so why don’t we try every pill on the market, whether it’s relevant to a rash or not, and stop searching when you find one that seems to do the trick?”

I

doubt many people would go for that…but for many that’s the equivalent of the golf club fitting they are receiving. Hitting ball after ball until something ‘works’ is what I call a ‘trial by error’ fitting which in all honesty is no good to anyone. My reasoning for this is that as a fitter you need to dig deeper into the persons technique and game more than simply trying to find something that ‘looks ok’ on the day. Believe it or not some of the best fittings are when the result on the day is actually not that great, but everything slots into place a few weeks later when the player has had time for the equipment to weave it’s magic.

In all fairness the fault does not entirely lie with the fitter here, many golfers believe a fitting is about hitting every head/shaft option on the market for them to make their mind up…if this is correct why do you need the fitter? This approach is fundamentally flawed due to the fact that the majority of golfers are simply not fit enough to be able to take on such a task. As I’m sure you will agree the internet is not the expert of all topics (although many use the internet to diagnose their golf game as well as their health… from my experience neither end up in a good place) and there are still some very clever people around who can really help your golf game, your job is simply to find them.

Rain, Rain Go Away!

G

olf courses are shut, its March and many golfers are very ready and desperate to get back on the course. This is the time to focus on when the weather improves. No, you cannot get out and play but you CAN work on your goals to make progress with your game and swing. Use this time to increase your fitness, drop a bit of weight (if needed), work on your flexibility and focus and get clear on what you want to achieve this year ... no goal is “too small!” If your goal is to drop your handicap by two then so be it! You may want to set a goal of injury free golf ... great goal ... get to work! This weather can make us feel very demotivated, especially if your main “movement” is golf. If you do not want a gym membership then start up at home ... you will need very little to start up at home. Get a swiss ball (55cm for 5”4 and under, 65cm for 5”5 and over) and a mat. Try out a

supine hip extension feet on ball (youtube and hold for 4 mins), try out a forward ball roll (youtube and do 20 reps), swiss ball squats, ball on wall (youtube and 20 reps) and a swiss ball russian twist (youtube and 20 reps). Do these exercises as a circuit and repeat 4 times round ... set those foundations to go back to golf. Join a class ... yoga or pilates. Socialise and improve flexibility and core. Ask your golfing friends if they want to go out walking rather than playing golf or go to the gym together. Get a coach, get help with what you need to do. You have options to keep moving and to make use of this time. Fingers crossed the rain will disappear soon and you will all be back on the course. But for the time being, take my advice, get moving, make the best out of this time and work on making those steps towards better and improved golf. You have options, decide whats right for you then go for it!

BE MORE CONSISTENT IN 2020

I

f I told you that you could play a golf shot, just like a Tour Golfer … would you believe me? Well the fact is, you can! If you are 6 foot from the pin and hole the putt, then a Tour Pro can do no better from that position. If you chip in, from off the green, a Tour Pro can do no better from that position.

Should you get yourself, a hole-in-one… then again, a Tour Pro can do no better! So why do I tell you this? The one key word that makes such a difference is CONSISTENCY! A Tour Pro will make those shots more times than an amateur. By the same token, that is why we have the handicap system in amateur golf. My question is; If you can hit that shot once, successfully, then what stops you doing it again? Let me answer that for you, you can! It IS possible… but you have to dedicate time, practise, dedication and belief that you can. I’m often told by golfers, ‘Yeh, but Pro’s practise every day, hitting 400 balls a day on the range or spending hours on the putting green’. When I ask them how long they practise for, at best it’s an hour on the range once a week and 5

minutes on the putting green before a round of golf! You see, for the vast majority of amateur golfers, it’s not about becoming a Tour Pro. It’s about getting better at golf, getting our handicap down, being in the mix in competitions, etc… basically… getting more consistent! If you’re like me, I watch as much golf on the TV as I can, certainly during the winter months, and without doubt you will have noticed when a Pro bogies a hole, isn’t it uncanny how they never panic, and often pick up the shot on the next hole with a birdie? Bounce-back-ability, the commentators call it. What they are doing, very effectively, is going through their process once more, rather than worrying or regretting their last hole. Try it, it works! I’m delivering a few Mind Zone sessions around the County (and further afield) over the next few months, where I specifically deal with developing a consistent process and practising efficiently. Why not get yourself along to one? Enjoy your golf and just a reminder that next month is MASTERS month. I cannot wait!

HOW TO STRUCTURE YOUR PRACTICE! L

ast month I discussed the purposes of your technical practice, this month I will discuss more in depth the purpose of your RANDOM practice time and how you can incorporate it into your practice.

I work closely with cognitive performance coach Andy Reynolds who works with a lot of my players to help them understand further the purpose of practice and how they can perform better. This diagram is very relatable to most golfers and is the main reason why I am discussing practice time in great detail over the next few months. Is this you? perhaps it is time for a change to your practice time. WHAT IS RANDOM PRACTICE? Random practice is the bridging between the really technical practice and trying to play freely in a competitive environment. It can also be seen as a safe place in practice. We are more worried about the ball than the technical practice, yet not quite as worried about the outcome as our competitive or TESTING practice. Random practice is also exactly as it sounds, it is a practice state that is not repetitive. It has a mixture of targets, a mixture of

shots and a mixture of clubs you will use. Random practice introduces a target and has more of the feel of playing golf on the course. RANDOM PRACTICE Random practice should be 25-30% of your practice time. During random practice, you must run through your full routines prior to every shot. Before every shot you should; 1) select your target and club. 2) Incorporate 1 good drill practice swing. 3) 1 practice swing rehearsing the swing you are going to hit the ball with. 4) picture the ball flying towards your desired target 5) fully commit to hitting the ball at your target. THE EXERCISE Firstly count out 10 balls and select 3 different targets on the range, something small eg, a yardage board. I would like you to select any club in your bag and hit 1 ball towards the first target. Regardless of the outcome of the shot I would like you to then select a different club and hit the next ball to your second target. Continue changing clubs and alternating between those three targets until the 10 balls have all been hit. The idea is you never hit towards the same target in a row nor do you use the same club in a row. (You would never do this on the course so never in random practice either) Please remember before every shot you must complete the 5 step pre shot routine as above. Once all 10 balls have been hit, depending on the amount of balls you originally selected for your whole practice. complete this process of 10 balls 2 or 3 times. Each set of 10 balls try mix up your targets and select 3 new targets on each set of 10 balls. Remember random practice is random!

GOLFING GIRLS CONTINUE TO GROW IN ESSEX

S

arah Bennett PGA Fellow Professional set up Golfing Girls 10 years ago with a specific goal to provide women golfers the opportunity to start, learn and stay within a friendly and welcoming environment. Sarah’s February coaching Valentines special was huge hit despite the recent inclement weather, the ladies had so much fun they just carried on and on. Sarah has seen steady growth over the years within her participation figures, but equally as important a very high retention rate either women joining as members or playing on a regular basis. Sarah offers monthly Golfing Girl group coaching at Three Rivers Golf Club where she is the Head Teaching Professional. The dates and information can be viewed on her Sarah Bennett Golf website or Facebook page Golfing Girl. Sarah will be providing a newly developed women’s group format under the National Love.Golf label who asked her to become one of their Coaches. “I am excited at this new inclusion within Essex as the sole Coach under a National umbrella, which can only benefit the club offering the chance for those

women to try the game of golf with like minded players. The “Dare to be different” slogan is very apt as the more traditional style group format of coaching I believe needed a revamp and mix up. My highly energised with no expectations and inclusive approach within both Golfing Girl UK and Love.Golf is definitely the way forwards. I am delighted to be offering my experience within the golf industry to help to introduce more women to the game within the County. If you would like to hear more about Golfing Girl please contact me directly to ask about the popular group lessons, vouchers or 1-2-1.”

DT38 TO HOLD CHARITY GOLF DAY

West Ham United’s Official Charity Partner DT38 Foundation is hosting a star-stubbed Golf Day in April

D

T38 was set up by the family of the late West Ham United and Australia U20 international striker Dylan Tombides, who sadly passed away at the age of 20 in April 2014, three years after initially being diagnosed with testicular cancer. Since February 2015, DT38 has been focused on tackling the stigma surrounding male health through educational programmes, encouraging boys and men of all ages to be self-aware about their wellbeing. Those programmes include specially focused information for boys aged 7-10, 11-12 and 13+, all of which use Dylan’s inspirational story to teach youngsters the importance of leading healthy, active lifestyles, being resilient and, for the oldest age-group, the necessary facts about testicular cancer and other illnesses. At the heart of their work across the UK. Dylan’s native Australia and across the world lies the message ‘Delay Is Deadly. Get Educated’ – DIDGE – with a focus on ensuring men know how to check regularly for testicular symptoms, and what to do is they find something unusual. To continue this valuable work, DT38 is raising funds and awareness by holding a charity Golf Day at Langdon Hills Golf Club in Essex on Tuesday

28th April, teeing off at 11am. There, supporters will have the opportunity to play alongside a host of West Ham heroes from days gone by, including Sir Trevor Brooking, Tony Cottee, Tony Gale, Dean Ashton, Steve Lomas, Mark Ward, Geoff Pike, former Academy Director Tony Carr and many more. Fourballs, with three supporters playing alongside a Hammers legend, are available for £500, with Fourballs alongside Brooking, Cottee, Gale, Ashton and Lomas to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. Fourballs without a legend are available for £400. Alongside a round of golf they will never forget, all players will also enjoy coffee and a bacon roll before teeing-off, a two course meal and an evening event featuring a Q&A session with West Ham greats, a charity raffle and auction. Sponsorship packages are also available. Supporters should note that all West Ham legends are subject to availability. Limited places remain, so to show your support for DT38 and enjoy a memorable day, please email: dt38@dt38.co.uk or call Ian Morgan on 07958 472 847. PUTTING...

USING THE SAM PUTTLAB PARAMETERS TO INCREASE PRESSURE ON BREAKING PUTTS D

id you know that if your putting stoke has a flaw in it, it will either help or hinder your right to left or your left to right breaking putts? An example of this would be if you cut across the ball and put right to left spin on the ball and you had a left to right breaking putt, the spin would accentuate the break so you would either have to aim it a little more left than needed or hit it harder to try to take the break out with speed. Both of which are not acceptable for real improvement of putts made percentages. Using the Sam PuttLab on an outside green where you can aim for the breaks tells us the stroke issues that happen when aiming for a putt which isn’t straight. This gives us a chance to really work on the important stuff and confirm that we are working on exactly what we need to. EPM work on capture speed, start line, and quality of strike and if you can get these correct then you will become a great putter. Using the PuttLab gives us the differential information between your right to left break stroke and left to right break stroke and allows us to create improvement drills to match up the quality of each as well as the opportunity to build your trust and confidence. Here are some tips on shorter putts from Emily: Do you often find yourself feeling nervous over putts under 10 feet, especially when they break a certain way? As Paul said above certain breaks can be accentuated by your putting stroke and this can cause unexpected misses. Unfortunately this can also play tricks on your mind and be detrimental to your putting confidence. My first tip would be to get yourself tested on Sam PuttLab to ensure you have factual feedback on your putting stroke tendencies which isn’t based on your feelings or doubts. After

this, here are some quick tips to build your confidence on your short putts: n In your practice, try putting a 5p coin on the ground at the point of where you want the ball to enter the hole on your shorter putts, this will get your eyes and brain used to focusing on where you’d like the ball to go in the hole rather than focusing on any negative thoughts about missing or having to hole the putt. n Take a few extra seconds to line up your putter face before you take your putting stance (whether that be lining up the putter face to the line on your ball or not), make sure you feel comfortable with the putter face aim before you take your putting stance. Often players line up quickly then look at the hole and start to shuffle because they feel uncomfortable or start doubting their line. Imagine what you could overcome if you spent just a few more seconds ensuring that you’ve lined up your putter face correctly. If you’d like to book a Sam PuttLab session with EPM or give us your feedback on the above tips please contact us on: elite.performancemanagement@yahoo.com

STOKE BY NAYLAND LADIES CHOOSE THE ALZHEIMER’S SOCIETY S

toke by Nayland Ladies Captain, Jane Golding, has chosen The Alzheimer’s Society has her nominated charity for 2020. The first of two charity talks took place on Thursday 13th February. A Nearest the Pin and Longest Drive competition was run by Deb Howlett in the simulator just before the talk, taken from an Abu Dhabi golf course. This included one of our eldest ladies Lilian Osborne taking part, she had never used one of these before, so it was quite an experience – certainly looking like warmer & drier weather than we have currently here! Well done to the winners of Nearest the Pin, Susan Swan and Karen Lewis and the Longest Drive, Corinne Jackson. Our Lady President, Lesley Garnett, also pictured taking aim. Musarra Gray from the Alzheimer’s Society gave a very interesting and informative presentation, which made for good talking points afterwards and focussed us all for raising funds for this worthy charity during the year. Earlier in the day a few of the ladies braved the elements properly outside the Simulator room, playing a 9-hole Blue Tee competition on the Gainsborough Course. Barbara Jones won with a marvellous 28 points, with Lesley Hitchcock coming second with 24 points.

STUDY SAYS CLEATED SHOES OUTPERFORM SPIKELESS SOLES FOR ‘DISTANCE, ACCURACY AND CONSISTENCY’

A

n independent study of the effects on performance of different types of golf shoe soles has discovered that driving distance, ball speed, shot dispersion and smash factor all improved when golfers wore replaceable cleats instead of spikeless footwear. The study was conducted at Pinehurst Golf Resort in America by GOLF Magazine Top 100 instructor Eric Alpenfels and Dr Bob Christina, emeritus professor of kinesiology at the University of North Carolina. The improvement in these categories was most significant in golfers with high handicaps, as the cleated footwear was claimed to help create a more solid lower body foundation, encourage a more consistent swing, and deliver improved energy transfer from the clubhead to the ball. The study involved 28 adult male golfers divided into two groups, one half with handicaps over 12 and the other half with handicaps under nine. Each participant hit 10 measurable drives, five in replaceable cleats and five in spikeless shoes. Each drive was on dry, flat ground and all testers used a Titleist Pro V1x ball throughout the study. The key findings revealed thatfor golfers wearing replaceable cleats increased their average carry distance was 4.35 yards longer than with spikeless shoes; smash factor was better, and ball speed was faster and more consistent. In addition to producing data, the study also asked participants for their personal views on the

two types of soles after taking part in the test. The responses relating to cleated shoes included, ‘I felt a better grip with the ground during the swing’, and ‘I felt like I got more power from the ground up with spiked shoes’, while another said,‘I felt more stable during my swing and had better balance’. Eric Alpenfels, who is a Master PGA Professional, said: “The spiked shoes provided better grip and a more solid lower-body foundation, which produced higher-quality driver swings. Swings in spiked footwear were more

efficient at translating clubhead speed into ball speed, because of more centred contact between the clubhead and the ball.” John Hohman, senior vice-president of marketing for PrideSports, one of the leading manufacturers of golf cleats, said: “This study reinforced what we believed about the benefits of wearing replaceable cleats. Driving distance and accuracy are key aspects of improving your scores, and the data provided by this study shows that your footwear choice absolutely makes a difference in your swing. Every teacher of the game should review this study and start asking students about their footwear during the very first lesson.”

GET OUT OF THE BUNKER IN ONE T

he bunkers seem to be a source of a disaster hole for many players. Often a player will either take a few to get out or hit one over the green causing a disaster hole. It can also cause fear when you are playing your shots into the green as you can be fearful of going into a bunker. You don't have to be brilliant out of the sand but if you can develop a competent bunker shot that gets you out onto the green in 1 and you can 2 putt you will start to keep some of those disaster holes off your card. So try these ideas to get out of the bunker in one. HIT THE SAND AND USE THE BOUNCE - The main concept you have to grasp to get out of the sand is to use the bounce of the club and to hit the sand. A good way to think of it is to use the bottom of the club like a rock skipping across the a pond for a standard bunker shot. If you can start to grasp this concept then bunker shots will become a lot easier. PRACTICE FROM ALL DIFFERENT LIES - It is very easy to blame the bunker in that there is too much sand or not enough. But, in our English climate maintaining the bunkers to what we would like is hard to do and we will have a number of different lies to deal with. So be prepared and work out how deal with these different situations. If you

can understand how to use the bounce it will help you getting out of those bad lies. If you need help with your bunker play please get in touch.

THE CADDIE’S TALE

G

he Essex County Order of Merit Championships kick-off on 4th April with The Keating Qualifier at Orsett, but current champion Josh Read may not be around to defend his title. He has now turned pro, no not as a golfer but golf caddie and work commitments may dictate whether he can make it. However whilst he was briefly in the UK John Nicholson from Essex Golf Union caught up with him to find out how things were going for him in “Caddie World” and below is an extract from their conversation.

EGU: How did you get into caddying? JR: It was quite a few years ago now, I was only a youngster at Three Rivers where James Webber was coaching me. He had gained a few entries to Europro Tour events and I offered to be his caddie and so started working for him. EGU: Had you considered professional golf as a career choice? JR: Growing up I always wanted to play golf at the highest level, it wasn’t until I experienced being around the 3rd tier of the professional game that I realised perhaps my game was just not good enough. Although I had won at county level, it may have been too early to make that judgement call but I knew turning professional was going to be a big jump. I believe now that anyone looking to make it to the top has to win at every level. EGU: You've already worked a number of bags so how are caddies hired ... and fired. JR: I’ve worked mainly full time for two guys over the previous couple of seasons and been lucky that I knew James beforehand. I found out Todd Clements was looking for a caddie and Taylor Carter, a former county amateur player, introduced me to him so I didn’t have to do too much digging. The world of a caddie is quite self-contained and word gets round who is and isn’t available for a particular tournament or event. Some guys may simply see me at an event and ask me if I’m free for a week. The firing side is down to a couple of things. I guess both player and caddy can agree when things are not working out too well and both want to move on. Players being the bosses can obviously sack the caddie at any time even mid tournament, but I’ve also known a few caddies to sack their player just over the way they were being treated in the relationship, but this is very rare. EGU: How many events have you been bag man for so far? JR: Well I’ve had two pretty full seasons and I’m into my third now. I did 14/15 events on the Europro in 2018 and 2019 was a mix and match with 6 Europro tournaments, 7 Challenge Tour events, Ladies open qualifying and Staysure tour event. At the end of 2019 I was at European tour school and of course I worked The Open with my good friend Curtis Knipes, so it’s been pretty mixed. More recently I went down to Australia with Dale Whitnell and have just arrived back from South Africa from a couple of Challenge Tour Events with Todd. EGU: Are the wages good or is it hard going? JR: I get paid a wage and from that sort all my own expenses out and I may get a percentage if there’s a good result. Some weeks are tougher than others flights are more expensive, food can be cheap and accommodation may be hard to find it varies from place to place and the economy of the country - 43 -

you’re in. I travel the world and I’m around golf which is a lot of guys dream, but it’s just like being an assistant manager in another job you help your boss in trying to get things right however, the difference is I’m in sport where there is no salary, no guarantee and personally would say it’s more pressurised because there’s more on the line. EGU: Is there a hierarchy in "Caddie World" JR: I wouldn’t say there’s a hierarchy I would say there are cliques, which is one thing I struggled to deal with when I first got to challenge tour. People are polite but sit with the guys they know. A few weeks in and I understood why because its dog eat dog people are always out to work for better players and a new caddie on the block is someone else’s potential job loss. I’ve met many good guys who I now stay with from week to week, but one bit of advice I was given at The Open by another experience caddie was “You go to work day in day out and do as good as you can. If you are good at your job work hard and your boss likes you no one can every take that job from you.” This is always in the back of my mind. EGU: What does being a professional caddie actually entail? JR: It varies depending on your player’s preference some guys just want the basics whereas others want things more in depth. These days with what’s on the line in golf many go for the latter and want to know as much as they can to help them; what is behind the flag? What the cover numbers are? How much is that wind going to affect the flight and distance? There are a whole load of things that play a part in what I and the players speak about that a lot of club golfers won’t even think about. EGU: How much input do you have regarding club selection, lines of putt etc. JR: These guys pay me money to be the clear head in every situation, so whether the chips are down or we’re 6 under through 9 I’m the one that has nothing affecting him and all I’m thinking about is my job. If I think the player has switched off when pulling a club I will always jump in and say what’s on my mind albeit with bits of information to back up why I think they’re wrong. Putts wise on the Challenge Tour there are green books that 8/9 times out of 10 are spot on sometimes when Todd is a little confused he’ll always call me over and ask for an opinion and then I’ll do my best to read it right. EGU: Is there any training or do you simply pick it up as you go along. JR: On my part I’ve simply picked everything up as I’ve gone along no one really has guided me apart from the players I’ve worked for and the things I have done that have gone well or badly. A few guys I know have been to see more experienced caddies and done a crash course and you could say learnt from them, but most of the boys out here are all self-taught. EGU: Do you think being a scratch golfer yourself make you a more desirable caddie? JR: I think it helped and guess being able to play to a reasonable standard meant I had a good understanding of the game so found it easier to pick up all the things that were necessary. From time to time it can also help when a player is a little puzzled with a shot a situation or even in the pressure situation he needs someone to talk things through with. EGU: Are there a lot of scratch golfers carrying bags? JR: I’m not sure to be honest I know a lot of guys who caddy can play but not sure to what level. Now - 44 -

there are certainly a number of ex professionals starting to do it guys that have tried to play and haven’t achieved what they wanted so therefore they work in golf and caddie. EGU: What have been the best bits so far? JR: Oh undoubtedly winning a couple of events on Todd’s bag, but being inside the ropes carrying Curtis’s bag on practice and tournament days at The Open has got to be up there. Doing that again would be a real bonus. EGU: And finally Josh as a caddie what is the best piece of advice that you can give to the aspiring amateurs who might read this article. JR: I think that is pretty simple really and it’s Course Management. Amateur golfers invest far too little time in course management and it is one area where potentially they will save so many strokes on their round. A major aspect of caddying is to recce the course and identify safe and no go areas, but amateurs don’t pay anywhere near enough attention to this aspect of their game. EGU: Thanks for your time Josh and maybe we can catch up again at the end of the year and see how the season went for you.

T

he driving range is the ideal environment to use at this time of the year and certainly has its place but when growing up I always used a self managed practice range. This lead to approximately 80% of my overall practice working on my pitch shots from 100 yards , which was my strength during my Tournament playing days. I have found this type of practice where the balls are collected can actually be one of the most constructive and creative, if you have the time and patience. Many of us I am sure can recall when gathering the balls chipping to our practice ball inadvertently practicing the finesse shot. There are now a handful of courses which permit chipping to their putting green so if you are fortunate to have this facility make the most of it. So, if you would like to practice your distance

control why not try this very simple idea if you have access to a bunker on your clubs practice ground. Randomly scatter say 20 balls from various distances and simply try to pitch the ball to land into the bunker no bouncing short, a point for each ball correctly executed. This idea will focus solely upon your distance control and non- technical aspects of the shot. I can guarantee the balls which do not land in the bunker will mostly pitch short with very few pitching over the top of the bunker. At the end of the session simply give yourself a score from 20 so next time you will have a target and specific goal to motivate yourself to achieve your personal best.

AIDAN HULL RETAINS THE TITLE A

group of 20 Burnham cadets enjoyed playing in this seasons Winter League. The challenging, shortened course proved to be a fantastic introduction for the 4 new cadets who had progressed from Ken Light's Junior Academy, one of which was young Harry Shultz who finished his debut appearance in 3rd place displaying great talent. Birdies were aplenty over the 14 weekends but it was 'Eagle Hunter' Louis Gold who secured 2nd place in the league. Defending his title, Aidan Hull, put up quite a challenge from the off. Favouring to play in his shorts and Ireland bobble hat, the luck of the Irish certainly came through for Aidan as he topped the table for the 2nd year in a row!

The Jubilee Cup Update from Jubilee Cup Committee, sponsored by Seabrook Warehousing, and reported by Chairman Phil Redhead

Good Luck in Round 1 of the League Phase in 2020! T

eams should now have planned their first match, which is due for completion by April 5th for Round One, and by the time the next edition of Essex Golfer is out this should almost be complete. Full Round 1 matches shown below, and when I say Good Luck to your teams, I mean that in terms of both playing your golf, and also good luck in completing matches in what seems like more unseasonal weather than usual - especially after the storms of February having such an impact to our Essex courses. As a reminder, Rule 14 of our competition, confirms the conditions your need to address should severe weather impact matches being played, and how to treat final results. Please do check them out at www.jubileecup.com/matches2020/rules2020.pdf

Not specifically in the Rules, but good advice however is that there are no competition specifics around condition of course. Clubs can agree to hold a match at a different venue home/away bias, if the allocated Home course is completely unplayable etc. Likewise, if conditions of the Home course dictate a number of holes are closed, then the Home club should do its best to ensure a full 18 holes of completive golf is played for the match – even if some holes are played twice, or perhaps in a different configuration than normal (shortened yardage, tee configuration, and/or temporary tees and greens) - Remember, BOTH teams are playing the same track either way, in the 1st Round Matches to be played same condition. by 5th of April 2020

A reminder of our new rule for Leslie Wood players. As a temporary measure Rule 1.1.1 has been added to test out for future usage. As a temporary 2020 rule, the Committee will allow clubs to field a maximum of TWO players each, in both League and Knockout phases, who have played in the Leslie Wood (including Plate) competition in the current calendar year. The Committee will ask Captains to note such players on result sheet. Is your club still organising matches and you want to get involved in playing etc. – find out who your club organiser is and contact them with all the details held for each club at the following URL: www.jubileecup.com/Jubilee_Cup_Entrants_2020.pdf

And when you have played your matches, please use the following link to download the RESULT card for completion and sending back to competition organisers www.jubileecup.com/Resultcard2020.pdf Please see how all the matches will play in our initial League phase in Divisions A through H, and more detail can be seen in our website at www.jubileecup.com/matches2020/draw2020.html As matches are played by the “play by” dates, games and scores will be fully updated on our website. In addition, all players who take part in a competition match will accumulate their own personal points as part of the Jubilee Cup Order of Merit, and will have the opportunity to win trophy as end of the season Singles or Pairs champion and runner up. So all to play for! So good luck in your first games, as players and teams. On a personal note, prior to Christmas we were all saddened to hear about the passing of a good friend of ours from The Notleys and Colne Valley Golf Club. Paul Neale, in his day, was a great Jubilee Cup competitor (until he got too good for the comp handicap-wise!) and known to members of our committee, organisers and players across Essex. I thought it fitting to at least pass comment here, and especially as my abiding memory of him was when he pinched my wife for a boogie at my Club Captains end of year dance at The Notleys back in 2010 – as you can see him here in his glory ... glass of red in hand! All the best to Paul’s family. The Jubilee Committee are always looking for volunteers to help us out – please contact myself or one of the Committee at the Contact details on our Homepage (top-right). www.jubileecup.com All the best
