TEE OFF
Christmas is nearly upon us and I thought I would finish 2012 Tee Off with a little story a friend told me the other day while waiting to play. A golfer, playing a round by himself, is about to tee off, and a greasy little salesman runs up to him, and yells, "Wait! Before you tee off, I have something really amazing to show you!" The golfer, annoyed, says, "What is it?" "It's a special golf ball," says the salesman. "You can never lose it!" "Whattaya mean," scoffs the golfer, "you can never lose it? What if you hit it into the water?" “No problem," says the salesman. "It floats, and it detects where the shore is, and spins towards it." "Well, what if you hit it into the woods?" "Easy," says the salesman. "It emits a beeping sound, and you can find it with your eyes closed." "Okay," says the golfer, impressed. "But what if your round finishes late and it gets dark?" "No problem, sir, this golf ball glows in the dark! I'm telling you, you can never lose this golf ball!" The golfer buys it at once. "Just one question," he says to the salesman. "Where did you get it?" "I found it." Merry Christmas Glen Head

Limited Edition Seve Tribute Box Set Launched The spirit of Seve Ballesteros, so evident on the final day of the ‘Miracle at Medinah’, is once again unmistakably apparent during this month’s DP World Tour Championship in Dubai with all 12 Ryder Cup heroes reunited to help launch the limited edition 2012 Ryder Cup Seve Tribute Box Set. Inspired by the homage paid to Seve by the entire European Team, the box sets comprises a shirt and sweater combination in Seve’s iconic blue and white Sunday colours. The garments feature not only the Official 2012 Ryder Cup Match Shield embroidered on the chest, but also the unique ‘Seve Tribute’ embroidery on the left arm that so inspired Europe to such great heights on the final Sunday in Medinah. With the generous support of Ryder Cup fans this special project, driven by Ryder Cup Europe, is set to raise in excess of £120,000 to enable The Seve Ballesteros Foundation to continue its crucial work. We are busy as usual. Here’s what we have been up to: At the end of October the Lady Vice President’s Cup was held at The Burstead. We had a small, select group of players! and amazingly Roger Gray accompanied by his loyal partner Suzy GC won the Cup with 41 points and by one point from Mark Stokes and Elaine Cochrane. What a result!! Next up the Chigwell Pro/Am. We haven’t been to Chigwell for a long time and it was superb. In the professional event Johnnie Fryat from Thorpe Hall had a tidy 71 to win by 2 shots from Joe Kelly from Orsett and home pro Barry Middleton with 73. Johnnie also won the team event with Mark and Gary Buxton and Mark Bushy with 80 pts, one ahead of Phil Wesley and his Langdon Hills team.
Johnnie Fryatt The following week saw us at Canons Brook for a Winter League. There were loads of new faces, particularly new intake trainees which was great to see. Despite horrid conditions, Mark Stokes from Rayleigh DR came in with a nice little –3 score of 70 to win, 2 ahead of trainee Sam Mayfield from Top Golf. Sam was our top trainee and top amateur was Simon Hartley from Canons Brook. Thank you to all at Canons Brook for allowing us to play this event. Sadly, Brookmans Park in Hertfordshire was postponed due to a waterlogged course – a problem we have witnessed numerous times this year. This event, however, has been rescheduled for February 11th . It is a beautiful course – it 14
reminds us all of Thorndon Park. The Eddie Sadler Trophy and Presidents Cup was held at Woodbridge GC in Suffolk on November 28th. We were lucky to play this event I think. The Eddie Sadler Trophy was won by Mark Stokes from Rayleigh DR with 34 points; one ahead of Graham Stone, Mark Bishop , Terry Mark Stokes – Moncur and Steve Hambling. Winner at Canon’s The Presidents Cup went to Brook and amateur Gary Ansell with a Woodbridge spectacular 39 points and finally the Team Competition with Nick and Gary Ansell plus Alan Towey with 78 points. It was a very good day at Woodbridge. The results of our Christmas Fayre at Toot Hill on December 6th, the final Winter League at Aldeburgh on Thursday December 13th - we still have some places available and the cost of entry is £35 which represents fantastic value for a game at Aldeburgh - it is open to all PGA qualified and trainee professionals plus low handicap amateur golfers) will be published in the next issue. We do have some great news to inform our followers – the 93rd Essex PGA Open Championship will be held at Chelmsford Golf Club on May 16th and 17, 2013. The entry for the qualifying competition will be published in the next issue of Essex Golfer. Our calendar for the first half of next year is now published on our website for information – some great events including a Day Trip to France to play La Mer. Our email address is essexpga@googlemail.com or refer to the website www.essexpga.com or get the latest news on our brand new facebook page search for Epga Essex PGA or simply phone Suzy GC on 01277 223510 if you want to know anything. They have to start young! In the last twenty years, we have seen a number of excellent golfers break through into the top echelons of the professional game. However, two have captured the imagination of golfers throughout the world. Tiger Woods burst on the scene in 1997 after winning The Masters and Rory McIlroy ten years later after his amazing performance at The Open at Carnoustie, aged 17 years. Rory turned pro subsequently that year and won his first pro tournament in 2009.
Both have re-written the record books and both have demonstrated that, when on form, they are so difficult to beat. When you watch them play, both have different swings, mind-sets and approach to the game. So is there a common denominator? Well, both were swinging plastic golf clubs aged two years. Rory used to take his club to bed, holding it in the correct grip that dad Gerry had demonstrated. Tiger had appeared on TV before his third birthday as a golf prodigy. Both had families prepared to sacrifice for their boys, and both won junior World Championships. Rory for aged 9/10 year olds at Doral GC in Florida. Tiger won six of these. Any golfer who makes it to the European or PGA Tour has to be a great golfer. A champion amateur. Because when they tee it up in a tournament, every opponent is estimated to play off a handicap of plus six. Can you imagine that! Mannasero of Italy has just become the youngest player to win three times on The European Tour at aged 19 years old. And a 14-year-old Chinese player recently won the Asian Amateur tournament which means he will be the youngest ever player to qualify and play in The Masters next April.
18
It's pretty obvious that the younger you start to play the game, the better chance you have of achieving success. In Korea, there are, apparently, 3000 girls under the age of 16 playing off scratch or better. Asian Ladies dominate the pro ranks and it’s not hard to understand why. However, as much as we admire the likes of Rory and Tiger (sometimes), not every child wants to play golf, and not every parent wants to push them. Remember though, that if you can get young children to practice swinging a safe, plastic club, their muscles will begin to recognise that strange movement. And this movement is so difficult to adopt when you are older. Just ask Tiger or Rory.

THE HISTORIC ORSETT GOLF CLUB TO GET A MAKEOVER Orsett Golf Club is to return to its historic roots with a makeover of bunkers to restore the original look of the James Braid-designed course. James Edwards Golf Design (JEGD), a leading designer of golf courses throughout the world, was commissioned by the Orsett Golf Club in the summer to analyse the bunkering to the entire golf course and to produce a proposal for the way forward. The course development committee, led by course manager Don Clark, appointed JEGD to restore and rebuild twelve bunkers back to the classic look of those introduced by world famous golf course designer Braid in 1899 when Orsett Golf Club was founded. Phase 1 bunkering commenced last month to 11 bunkers, which will be rebuilt with historic revetment techniques in the makeover. Another bunker will be removed at the Essex course which hosts regional qualifying for The Open. All five bunkers will be rebuilt on the 4th hole, two greenside bunkers rebuilt on the 7th hole and four bunkers rebuilt on the 18th hole. Don Clark, Course Manager at Orsett Golf Club, said: “Our aim for Orsett Golf Club has always been to bring back the strong traditional bunkering to which this wonderful golf course is known for. I am pleased that our collective vision is shared by our course architect, James Edwards.” James Edwards, of JEGD, added: “It is an absolute privilege to work at Orsett Golf Club alongside Don Clark, his excellent team and local contractor, Grass form Planthire Ltd. The course totally inspires me every time I set foot on the property and I’m honoured that the club has entrusted us to restore the integrity of the James Braid bunkering as designed some 113 years ago.”

Robin Hood drives in at Woodford GC In the great tradition of eccentric drives-in by the new captains at Woodford Golf Club, John Michael Wade, a maverick sculptor, dressed up as Robin Hood and rode his hobby horse on to the tee while blowing his hunting horn before his inaugural strike on Nov 18. He was followed by the Merry Men dressed in outlandish costumes and carrying toy bows and arrows. There then followed a humorous three-minute Outlaw sketch performed by the Red Army ensemble - a reference to golfers having to wear a significant item of red clothing on the course. The sketch paid homage to Captain Wade's upbringing. He was born in Retford, Notts and raised in Mansfield, the centre of Sherwood Forest. A former Fleet Street journalist, he has been a Woodford GC member since 1997. There was an anti-climax though when, following tradition in using the ancient Astride his hobby horse, Robin Hood (alias Captain John Michael Wade) wooden driver which spends the rest of the year hanging above the clubhouse bar, Robin Hood scuffed his inaugural drive 32 yards. However, as he said later: "My main concern was the Outlaw sketch. Nevertheless, the lads and lasses performed this magnificently. Their costumes were fantastic. This was a great advertisement for the benefits of club membership, of the comradeship and companionship you get from your colleagues."

THE ANNUAL DINNER: Our Annual Dinner was held at Colne Valley on Friday 23rd November and hosted by our County President, Mike Spall. Those who attended enjoyed not only a good meal but a lively toast to the Essex Golf Union from Roy Case, a Past President of the English Golf Union followed by hilarious entertainment by our guest speaker, Ian Richards.

We thank Colne Valley Golf Club for their excellent service. THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING: The AGM will be held at Upminster Golf Club on Thursday 7th February 2013.
County Dinner Guest Speaker
Mike Spall presented shields (to keep as mementos) to Abridge who won the Thornton Cup, and Chelmsford who won the Leslie F. Wood Trophy. He also presented the Norman Plum Trophy to The Essex Golf and Country Club and the Allan Lockwood Trophy to Jamie Read of Frinton and James Russell of Colne Valley. They had agreed to share the trophy, the final having been abandoned due to torrential rain. David Parrett, President of the England Golf SE Group presented medals to our U18 Team who won the England Golf SE Boys Foursomes and to our Colts who won the England
Mike Spall will retire from the Presidency, having completed his term of office. He deserves much more than a pat on the back in thanks for the enormous amount of time and effort that he has put into supporting our teams, representing Essex at national level and generally leading from the front. All being well, John Peters will be elected President and Mike Hart President elect. Both have given invaluable service to the Essex Golf Union over many years and can be assured of our full and unstinted support. Essex golfers who would like to participate in the running of County golf can stand for election to the Board of the Union. Nomination forms, which will need the endorsement of their Golf Club, can be obtained from the County Office. Continued over 27

THE DRAW FOR THE 2013 KNOCKOUT COMPETITIONS: We have recently circulated the ďŹ rst and second round draws for the Thornton Cup, the Leslie F. Wood Trophy and the Norman Plum Trophy. The Youth Shield will be drawn early in December. We do the draws early in the closed season to enable Clubs to include them in their ďŹ xture lists. These competitions continue to be well supported with a healthy number of entries. We hope that there is stiff competition within each Club for places in the teams.
TITLEIST/FOOTJOY ENGLAND GOLF ORDER OF MERIT. In the ďŹ nal ranking for Men, Jack Hiluta of Chelmsford Golf Club was placed 9th. In the ďŹ nal ranking for Boys, Bobby Keeble of Abridge Golf Club was placed 5th. A top ten positions in a national order of merit for two of our Essex players is something to celebrate. Well done Jack and Bobby. AND FINALLY: We hope that you all enjoy Christmas and the New Year festivities. We hope too that your New Year resolutions to play better golf will be achieved sooner rather than later in 2013.
PROMOTING A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE RULES OF GOLF: Whenever we play golf, be it in an individual or team competition or a friendly fourball, we would not knowingly or intentionally gain an unfair (66(; *2/) 81,21 advantage by “bendingâ€? the rules. Of course we wouldn’t. We own up to double hits and air shots even though out of sight of our playing companions. Problems and disputes can arise however through a misunderstanding of those Rules, particularly when unsure about how to proceed when &2817< *2/) $'0,1,675$725 an irregular situation has occurred. Not every beginner is taught correctly and some learn the hard way. 'XH WR D UHVWUXFWXUH LQ WKH DGPLQLVWUDWLRQ RI WKH (VVH[ *ROI 8QLRQ In order to promote a wider understanding of the Rules, we hold “Rules Eveningsâ€? at Golf Clubs throughout the year. We have held 16 of these events during 2012. QualiďŹ ed Rules OfďŹ cials explain the rules as they apply to situations that often occur with the aid of video presentations. This is followed by a quiz. We hope that in 2013 more and more Clubs will host one of these Rules Evenings and that a very large number of their members take advantage of the opportunity to extend and deepen their understanding of the Rules. At all of the County Union Order of Merit events and some other County matches, we ďŹ eld a team of qualiďŹ ed Rules OfďŹ cials to act as Referees. To qualify as a Rules OfďŹ cial it is necessary to be trained and pass an examination. The next available training course will be the Rules Seminar to be held at Crondon Park Golf Club on Monday 8th April 2013 followed by an examination on Monday 13th May. We would welcome 28

Wind up for winter! Unfortunately it is that time of year again where we end up wearing layer upon layer of clothing. A good upper body turn is one vital component of the golf swing but is made increasingly difficult at this time of year This lack of movement combined with an in sufficient warm up comes as no surprise it makes a full shoulder turn at 7am much harder than on a fine Summer’s day! I would like to make you aware of some of the other factors that prevent this movement and how it can be overcome. An excessively tight grip pressure on the club causes tension to radiate through the hands and arms and into the shoulders thus affecting the fluidity of the turn. A well known grip pressure test being approximately 5 or 6 on a scale between 110 or gently squeezing a tube of toothpaste without squirting it everywhere! If the club is also held too much in the palm of the hand rather than the fingers this can cause the club to be taken back too much in a “straight line” and in a closed position as in figure 1 (the grooves pointing down to the ground) This is one cause of incomplete rotation. Figure 1 head too “still” with arm too much in a straight line. I speak to many golfers who are under the impression that the lower body should not turn on the backswing and that the left foot should stay planted as if in concrete. Fig 2. This image also shows reduced upper body rotation as a result of inactive hip movement. I don’t mind if the left foot raises slightly off the ground as this actually facilitates the turn of the body in the backswing which is essential for many swing styles also for players with limitations. Figure 2 “Keep your head still” we have all heard this phrase many times…. Just try to make a full and complete turn without some lateral movement to the right (right handed player)…… it is pretty difficult to achieve unless the golfer possess an excellent combination of strength and flexibility. This is one reason why the slice is seen in golfers as there is very little upper body rotation. I believe the head has to have a small amount of movement to the
32
right on the backswing to allow the body to rotate and not tilt. This movement is not applicable to all golfers whom I coach who possess different swing features. The picture below shows an acceptable turn in the backswing with a relaxed movement. The amount of turn a golfer can achieve is dependent somewhat on any physical limitations or injuries they may possess. Remember to discuss this with your Teaching Professional prior to your lesson. Figure 3

The Colne Golf Academy The Colne Golf Academy has been competing in the British schools and College Tour. The competition is split into nine areas; Colne has the Lee Westwood School, Eastern College and Colchester 6th form in their area. There are 6 rounds before the finalists are known. So far, 3 rounds have been played at Stoke by Nayland GC, Frinton GC and Bawburgh Golf Club. After these Colne’s 'A' team are lying 3rd out of 7 teams in the gross league table and 1st in the net league table. Student Matt Anderson lies 7th in the individual order of merit with another 3 within the top 15. The final of the tour is being held at Princes Golf Club in March.
Steven loran who is lying 15th in the British schools order of merit.
Plans are now being finalised for recruiting new students for next September. Colne's new direction is going to be Learn, Work and Play. Students will not only be able to take part in quality education; they can work towards becoming an Elite player and will also be able to get involved with working within the golf industry. This will include work within golf retail shops and coaching. It really will give students the opportunity to build a CV and get a great understanding of what the golf industry can offer. No student will be discouraged from following their dreams of becoming a player; however, students will come out after the two years with some exceptional work specific training. The Colne academy is open to any student aged 16-19 years. For further details, please email. info@coastalgolfacademy.co.uk. 35

Trusting Your Swing Golf is a game of trust and faith. The purpose of practicing, taking lessons, etc. is to allow you to make a swing that you trust and will hit the ball at your target. You can’t make the ball go where you would like it to go; you have to make a swing in which you let go of the result and just focus on your target. This means making the swing a less conscious movement on the course and move to an unconscious athletic movement where you are focused on your target. This is something that good players do when playing well, they simply pick out a target, see the shot they want to hit and hit it. This is difficult to do when you are playing badly, but you will perform better by trusting your swing even if it is not performing for you on that day.
Aim of practicing is to think less not more- An important principle to remember as you practice is to make your swing and game instinctive and full of good habits, which support you playing your best. As you develop and groove these habits, you will become unconsciously competent at it; which is what each player is aiming for and why great players practice so hard. A good analogy: is it is like learning to drive. At first, you had to think consciously about driving but as time goes on you have practiced it enough to where it becomes a habit, and you just get into the car and drive. Focus on your Target and don’t think about swing mechanics while you are playingWhen on the course forget worrying about your swing technique such as focusing on your how your wrists work, your swing plane, etc. and just focus on your target. If you don’t block this out you will over involve the left side of your brain, and this will impair your natural athletic ability. The place to improve your swing mechanics is on the driving range, so when you are on the course let go of this and just play. Have a simple thought, such as good rhythm, and leave anything technical for your practice time. 40

Winter Warmers! Firstly, could I say a massive thank you to all the ladies who attended our very first collaborative workshop at the Three Rivers Golf Club. Sarah Bennett and I thoroughly enjoyed the event and hope all the attendees improved their chipping, and enjoyed all the facts and figures regarding eating for golf. If anyone would like to register their interest in attending the next event in the new year, please call either Amber Heath on 01245 223155 or Sarah Bennett on 07719 617349. But for now, how about a winter soup to keep yourself warm and full of goodness inbetween practice and friendly matches. Pumpkin soup (or sweet potato) • 1 tbsp olive oil • 15 g butter • 2 kg pumpkin, peeled and diced • 3 sprigs rosemary • 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped • 1-2 crusts of parmesan • 1 litres chicken stock • fresh shavings of parmesan Method: 1. Heat the oil and butter in a large pan, then add the diced pumpkin, rosemary and garlic along with the parmesan crusts. 2. Let the crusts melt a little and the pumpkin colour slightly for about 10 minutes, and then add the stock. Bring to the boil, next simmer gently for 30 minutes. 3. Pick out the rosemary sprigs and parmesan crusts and pour the soup into a blender. Liquidise until smooth and return to the pan to heat through. Have a great Christmas and a happy new year

Lee Porter, the PGA Professional attached to Hylands Golf Complex in Chelmsford, has been voted Clubmaker of the Year by the Golf Clubmakers Association in the UK. Lee now ranks in the top ten custom-fit clubmakers throughout Europe. No wonder he counts 8 touring golf pros as customers, including the ever popular local Pro, Robbie Coles, who has had a great start to this year’s European Tour.
Why there is more to loft than what it says on the club head. Believe it or not in golf we actually have three lofts on the golf club. Firstly, we have Static Loft. This is the loft that the golf club has as it sits in your golf bag, although it's not always what it says on the club head. Secondly, we have Spin Loft; this starts out very close to the Static Loft but changes due to how the golfer presents the club to the ball, technique and the golf shaft are the main factors here. Last but not least, and what I'm going to explain; is Dynamic Loft. This is a combination of Spin Loft and the golfer’s angle of attack - the direction the club head is traveling in as it strikes the ball in relation to the ground. There are three basic angles of attack, positive is hitting upwards on the ball, negative is a downward strike and neutral is exactly that - a level strike. Below you will find two iPad screenshots from a recent test I have done to explain Dynamic Loft. For both screenshots, I used a 10.5 degree driver. In the first screenshot, you can see that I managed to achieve an upward angle of attack of 5.2 degrees. In turn this gives me a Dynamic Loft of 16.4 degrees ( a little high for my club

head speed) and a launch angle of 14.9 degrees (not too bad, but maybe a little high). However, the big problem here is the shots back spin (this can be found in the Spin column along the bottom) which is way too high. This results in a high launching shot which will climb high into the air and pretty much 'stall' - it simply hangs in the air. Furthermore; this shot would have hardly any roll. In our second screenshot, I had a downward attack angle (-4.2 degrees) which in turn changes the Dynamic Loft to 9.1 degrees. This means the ball launches at only 7.5 degrees, which is way too low for my club head speed. This does lower the spin but in all honesty at this launch angle the more spin the better as the ball simply won't stay in the air. So, not only does the club's Dynamic Loft change the shot’s launch angle, but it also changes the spin. In previous articles, I have spoken about the importance of matching your launch angle to your swing speed; this is the only way to make sure you are achieving your maximum distance.
Hopefully, you can now see why simply choosing a loft without having your angle of attack measured is a bit of a lottery. Finally, I would like to thank the Essex Golfer Team for a fantastic year and wish everybody at the magazine and all of its readers, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. May all your putts run true! Regards, Lee Golf Complex on 01277 356016 emailporterlee@mac.com

GET INTO GOLF SCORES A FAMILY SUCCESS Keith and Ian Bailey rekindled the family feeling when they decided to Get into golf in Essex. The brothers, who both now live in Shoebury, had drifted apart over the years and saw little of each other. That was until they decided to join a Get into golf taster session at Garon Park Golf Club in Southend. They enjoyed it so much; they returned for a four-week coaching course and commented: “It’s the best thing we’ve ever done." “We’ve seen more of each other in the last two months than we have in absolutely years, and we can’t wait to get to the stage; where we can go out onto the course for a sociable and competitive game of golf.” Theirs is just one of the success stories at Garon Park, which has been shortlisted for the England Golf ‘GolfMark Club of the Year’ Award, which will be announced in February. GolfMark is a national award recognising clubs, which are a beginner and junior friendly and Garon Park has received High Achiever status. The Club, supported by the Essex Golf Partnership; has attracted 110 new golfers to Get into golf lessons this summer and autumn – and 60 of them (pictured below) have just attended a special Get into golf day organised by PGA professionals Gary Jacom and Steve Jackson. They braved icy weather to play a competition on the par three course and then took part in a separate putting competition. The winners received vouchers for an individual lesson. Everyone taking part was offered further get into golf coaching of four weekly lessons for £25, in groups of no more than four people. Steve commented: “They all love it; we have fun, and many people have made new friends.” Get into golf is a national campaign to inspire more people to take up golf. It is run by the England Golf Partnership through its network of County Golf Partnerships, which work to grow the game at grass roots. But unfortunately they took on a constant foe, the weather. The golf was called off but they still managed to raise ÂŁ88 for the Poppy Appeal.

From 1995 to 2003, I spent my winters on The Asian Tour; from mid-January to the end of February, each year, before heading straight to the Australian events in March. At one of the Asian events, I witnessed my tiny local caddy, half my size, fight the Indonesian heat without a morsel of food because of Ramadan. I felt we were both deserving of my seven under par, 65. I already knew what I wanted to do with the cash I would win and wondered what she would do with hers.
I was buzzing and sprung straight out of the score recording tent to the putting green, to groove my stroke. Was 65 good enough to win? Or would I be faced with my first professional play off? Whatever, I was ready. I could see Kato San (head of the tour) approaching; this was it, “Glory” or a simple podium spot? “Wendy, I’m really sorry; you didn’t sign your card” “Silly me, do you have it or should I go back to recording?” “No Wendy, I’m really sorry; it means you are disqualified” Wow, what a tough way to learn a lesson! Still it was only 5th place! 48
Dressed to Distress
A family friend/caddy Shelia McCoig, once said to me, she thought it didn't hurt me enough when I lost. Well, this hurt and would inspire me to great things in Asia. After all every golfer takes knocks, but it is how we recover that defines us.
We’re looking to uncover some of the worst dressed golfers in Essex. Please email us your contenders to
Corrine Dibnah instigated a collection from the other European players and a pile of cash was waiting on my bed for me, which did restore my interest in life. The wonderful thing about the Asian tour was Europeans really did pull together and look out for each other. In Europe, we mainly stayed with our own nationalities but in Asia David Cameron would be proud of The Big Society we created every year.

WINTER = WORKOUT The worst possible time for a competitive golfer is WINTER! Poor weather conditions and lack of competitions. Practice time goes down and for some golfers motivation goes too. For me, winter is the optimal time to get in good physical condition for the next season. Flexibility, core stability, postural work & strength + power should be worked on throughout the winter so that when the weather improves you are at your peak to start the new season. Flexibility is stage1, then move on to core stability + posture followed by strength and then to power. By progressively moving through the above you are creating a flexible, functional, strong & stable body. When achieving this your golf WILL improve. Flexibility will lengthen the short muscles & correct imbalances. Core stability will involve strengthening the deep abdominal wall and the inner unit giving stabilisation through functional exercise. Strength training will build muscle, and last but not least power will bring it all together resulting in a strong, stable, more powerful golfer who can hit the ball further, be more consistent and see their handicap drop whilst staying injury free!! To achieve the above find a golf biomechanic or reputable personal trainer as they can develop a regime to follow that is specific and tailored to your needs. I can highly recommend a book that comes around everywhere with me and when I am with my golfing clients; The Golf Biomechanics Manual; Whole In One Golf Conditioning by Paul Chek. Have a wonderful Christmas!

After two years at The London Club, Golf LIVE is upping sticks and moving to Wales as Ryder Cup venue Celtic Manor will become its new home. Colin Montgomerie will again be one of the key driving forces behind the event and will oversee four teams of celebrities that will take part in “The Celebrity Cup” at Golf Live. The annual show takes place from 10-12 May, 2013. Nike announces New Driver for 2013... The new Nike Driver, the VR_S Covert will be available in golf stores throughout Europe on February 8, 2013. The driver will be offered in two models, the VR_S Covert Tour and VR_S Covert. The NexCOR face technology featured in the VR_S Covert line is designed to deliver faster ball speed and longer shots from a wider area of the face.... However, Nike will need to sell a few bucket loads if they want to recoup the cost of Rory McIlroy’s new £156m new contract! Golfalot Price index... Ever stopped to think about whether replacing your golf gear is costing you more than it did the last time you renewed your clubs? Well the good news, according to the ‘Golfalot’ price index, is that equipment and clubs are not increasing at the same rate as inflation (currently at circa 2.8%). However, on average prices are up 1.5% on Oct 2011, with wedges, irons and putters all remaining static. So, if you are waiting for your next set of clubs to come down in price before making that purchase, don’t wait too long as the trends indicate that prices will probably climb in 2013.

The game of golf is 90% mental and 10% mental. Since bad shots come in groups of three, a fourth bad shot is actually the beginning of the next group of three. When you look up and cause an awful shot, you will always look down again at exactly the moment when you ought to start watching the ball if you ever want to see it again. You can hear thunder a hundred miles away when you're three holes down with three to play. No matter how badly you are playing, it is always possible to play worse.

The Big 3 Golf DVDs ideal for Christmas Tin Cup Stars Kevin Costner as washed-up golf pro Roy "Tin Cup" McAvoy, who has the singular misfortune of falling in love with the girlfriend (Rene Russo) of his arch rival (Don Johnson). Although he is inspired to re-ignite his golf career, challenge his opponent in the U.S. Open, and win the affection of the woman of his dreams, McAvoy has just one flaw: he's a show off when he should just focus on playing the game.
Caddyshack This 1980 comedy classic makes anarchy the rule of the day, unleashing the antics of Bill Murray, Rodney Dangerfield, and Chevy Chase. Dangerfield ultimately steals the show, firing off a battery of one-liners, insults, and tasteless gags while Murray carries out his maniacal war with a gopher that has been digging up the golf course. Caddyshack is the kind of movie some people have been known to watch several times a year, reciting every line of dialogue like the followers of a bizarre comedic ritual.
Happy Gilmore Stars Adam Sandler as Happy Gilmore, a hot-tempered guy whose dreams of hockey stardom elude him. But when he discovers his gift for driving golf balls hundreds of yards, he joins a pro tour to win the prize money needed to rescue his beloved grandma's home from IRS repossession. The trouble is, Happy's not so happy. He's got a temper that frequently flares on the golf course.
