On a Gloomy Day “
Bring me sunshine” sang the Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise lookalikes at Woodford Golf Club. They could not alter the weather on an overcast day, but brought some cheer to members as they performed a skit before the annual Captain’s drive in to office. Following a grand 21st century tradition of oddball inaugurations - they range from Robin Hood to an Oriental mystic - the newly-minted captain dragged in the 2014 skipper Zekia Alsanjak as his sidekick Ernie. Both were clad in top hats and scarlet jackets. To a background of members holding up letters
-4-
reading “The year of Eric” Captain Paul Evans, 64, a retired engineer from Highams Park, east London, scuffed his drive using the ancient wooden-shafted club retained solely for this purpose; normally it reposes in a place of honour above the clubhouse bar. The drive travelled only 48 yards thus winning Mark Deeming the prize for estimating the distance in a sweep. Captain Evans said later that his sketch, ably assisted by Terry Chisholm as the compere in drag and Martin Cox supplying the music, plus all the golfers out on the day raised more than £300 for his charity, the Alzheimer's Society.

The Unbeatables Cipa and His Lads Do It Again
S
teve Cipa, the South Essex professional and his team of amateurs from Upminster and Aveley adore Woodford's golf course for in the second running of the local club’s pro-am event, they triumphed for the second time. The team of Steve, 16-year-old Jesse Martin, his father Edward Martin and Kevin Lye amassed 90 stableford points - two better than in 2015 - to head off challenges by professionals playing with resident members. Kenny Banks, the Woodford Golf Club pro, recruited professionals from Essex and beyond to stage this popular event sponsored by Hills of Woodford, the Toyota car dealers. The runners-up were Mark Talbott, a pro at Thorpe Hall GC,

alongside amateurs Peter Willett, Michael Cutter and Paul Verney on 88 points. One point behind was Christian Foreman, of Sunningdale GC, Berkshire, heading another team of locals comprising three former Woodford club captains - Terry Chisholm, Nick Rowe and Zekia Alsanjak. In the professionals’ ranks, the top three scores were by Brett Taylor, of Crondon Park driving range, Stock, Essex, who registered a 67, then came Craig Harman, of Warley Park, a former Woodford Junior member, on 68 with Cipa filling the third spot after a round of 69 in October. Prizes were presented by David Hawkins, a past captain of Essex PGA, and Kenny Banks.

Our Costa Verde is Truly Golfs Natural Paradise With Alfredo Garcia Heredia, The 2011 Spanish PGA Professional Golf Champion.
A
s 2017 approaches, many golfers in the UK are thinking about their annual golf breaks in the New Year! So with the rapidly emerging Costa Verde in North West Spain bursting onto the golfing scene, the well forecasted trend is now set to change towards the new golf region in 2017 and beyond! With prices throughout as competitive as Turkey, tallying up to an average daily spend of just 40 Euros per golfer in 2016. It’s no wonder this region is going to be one of the big resort players in golf tourism for many a year to come! Pro golfer Alfredo Garcia tells us more about his region! As an Asturian, it is an honour to tell you all about our golf here in my homeland on the Costa
Verde. When I started playing, there was hardly any golf tradition in this area, but over recent years the Costa Verde has become one of the Spanish destinations with the best infrastructure to enjoy a full golf break. I daresay Asturias and Cantabria the Costa Verde regions have a very promising present and future in golf tourism, with our first rate gastronomy, a dynamic and valued cultural offering, excellent accommodations and an amazing landscape. Not forgetting, the technical quality and diversity of our golf courses, the beauty and richness of the surrounding countryside and the bonus of our mild and humid climate, our Costa Verde is truly golf ’s natural paradise. This is why I am inviting you to come and play golf with us here in the very near future.

PULL THE SHAFT IN ORDER TO CREATE EFFORTLESS POWER C
ontinuing my theme of leverage in this issue, we are going to show you how to magnify your club head speed to create distance you never thought possible, simply by changing direction in your swing efficiently. Picture 1 is where I left you all hanging last issue at the top of the backswing with the two lever system intact, i.e. the extended top lever (left arm for a right-handed player), the shaft of the club bottom lever and the hinged wrists. As a matter of principle the faster you can move your top lever down past impact in a continuous motion the better, remember “speed is your friend this is primarily achieved with an efficient dynamic sequence the pivot rotates the top lever follows and pulls the bottom lever into impact.
Picture 2 demonstrates the all-important movement as the top lever swings down the bottom lever is pulled into the side, the more you can do this the better. The wrists have re hinged some more creating a lag on the bottom lever. This has delayed the club head and will magnify the speed when it starts to release. Picture 3 shows how this delay magnifies the speed. The wrists have only a short journey to impact but the club head a far greater one hence its increased speed. The nearer you can get the shaft to your side in the downswing the greater the potential energy from the club... I would like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and great golfing new year.

Twice in One Day For Dermot A
hole-in-one is a very rare feat but to hit two in one round is almost unheard of. But for one amateur golfer, the dream has come true after waiting more than 30 years to achieve the first. Dermot Traynor, 68, was playing a round of golf with four friends at Hainault Golf Club last week when he nailed the two master strokes. Dermot hit the first on the second and knew he found the hole after seeing fellow golfers jumping up and down at the tee nearby. The second came at the 15th hole which left him in a “state of shock” as his ball trundled down the green. Dermot said: “I still can’t believe it now, I’ve been playing golf for over 30 years and I’ve never managed one hole-in-one so to hit two in
one round is a dream come true. “Me and my friends have never seen anyone hit one in all our time playing, it’s an incredible feeling.” The golf course’s manager Andy Greenslade has been left amazed by the golfer’s accomplishment too. He said: “We are currently undergoing some renovation work on the course but we might have to build Dermot his own tiger tees which are the furthest set back you can get. “The odds of anyone pulling off two holes-inone on one round are about 67 million-to-one!”
Dermot Traynor who managed to get a hole in one twice in one day at the Hainault Golf Club.

Injured All The Time?? Do Something About It ... M
y most common conversation with golfers is about injury ... back pain, knee pain, hip pain, neck pain etc. When i ask if they stretch, 80% of the time its a no. That misconception that golf is not a sport. Golf is as demanding as any other sport, hitting the ball just once is like picking up your 1 rep max in the gym ... basically a weight in the gym you could only pick up once and then in a game you hit the ball 70+ times, thats picking up your 1 rep max 70+ times in a morning / afternoon! This is highly demanding on the body. The more flexible, strong and stable the body is the more likely injury is avoided. Stretching I am a slave driver with my golfers when it comes to stretching. Do not expect your body to play golf consistently well if you are not following a stretch programme. 3 of my favourite stretches for golfers are below; Piriformis Stretch Hold the knee, hold the ankle, pull across to opposite shoulder. Seek a good personal trainer to teach you how to stretch the performs correctly.
Hamstring Stretch Use a band or a towell, hook over the foot and lengthen the leg. Pec Minor You can place a 90 degree arm on the ball, chair, bed etc. When conditioning the body its like building a house ... assess the area and do appropriate adjustments to get ready for groundwork (stretching), then do all the groundwork and foundations (core and postural work) to then start building the walls of the house, placing the roof on etc (strength and conditioning). When working with golfers this is the system I work by. Start with stretching and mobilisation, to go on to core and posture work to then go on to strength and conditioning. This is what prevents injury and keeps you injury free. Assess the area, do the groundwork and foundations, then build the walls and roof ... miss out the assessing and groundwork = an unstable building that could fall down/break at any time ... just like the body! P.S Winter is here ... time to hit the gym!

Brilliant Day For Josh J
osh Coleman, in his first competition as a member of Colchester Golf Club, produced a round to startle the other competitors when his 39 points took first place in the Poppy Appeal Stableford. Having only joined the club the previous week, the five handicap sixteen year old, has made an immediate name for himself. However, his round of 39 points did not have the best of starts with a double bogie on the first. Nevertheless, birdies on the third, fourth and ninth holes along with a bogey on the fifth evened up his score to allow him to turn on level par. Two bogeys on the back nine just gave Coleman the edge over Cai James (3) who returned a credible 38 points. James having scored a wonderful two under par on the front nine lost the magic on the back with four bogeys and just the one birdie. Eighty members played in the competition, which was halted at eleven o’clock, along with the Nation, to pay their respects. Coleman’s victory fits well into his profile as a
recent victory at Gosfield Lakes with Natham Parish of Chelmsford in the Essex Boys Foursome Championship marks him as one to look out for next year. Glen Clark (7) took third spot with a 37. There were four players returning handicap equalling 36 points, and they were Scot Farthing (18), Steve Parlett (15) Michael Mayes (12) and Colin Gathercole.
The Ladies’ Captain’s Winter Competition
T
he team comprising Sheila Dornan, Janet Austin, Linda Freeman and Liz Napier won the Ladies’ Captain’s Winter Competition hosted by Jane Madge the Club’s Ladies’ Captain. The format the competition is played in was described as a Waltz, where the number of scores from each team to count was 1,2,3 recurring. The winners put in an exceptional performance to score 63 points when 54 would have equalled a par score for the teams over the fourteen holes it was played. The competition started with the promise of showers but when they did arrive, they were interspaced with bright sunshine, which allowed the golf to live up to its promise. It was also pleasing to note that another comparatively new member, Liz Napier, had added to the quality of the winning team. Some five shots back and leading the fourteen teams of four chasing the winners were Claire Hebden, Marilyn Wood, Pip Macaulay and Fiona
Prentice, who took second place. Third place with 56 points were Janet Wilson, Alison Cordran, Doreen Lee and Roberta Bodsworth. Just one point behind them were two teams separated by countback and taking fourth place were Beverley Parker, Madryn Abnett, Nerys Horrocks and Gill Crayston with fifth spot going to Liz Lennox, Philippa Deman, Jo Mager and Pat Kettle, Nearest the pins were won by Annette Wigley on the eighth and Bridget Whitworth on the sixteenth.

Epping Golf Club Relay for Children in Need
E
pping Golf Club held their annual golf relay in support of BBC's Children in Need. About 25 members of all different shapes and sizes gathered to propel a golf ball around 18 holes from the competition tees as fast as possible. No two people were allowed to hit consecutive shots, and the Rules of Golf had to be strictly obeyed. At completion of each hole, the ball had to be carried or thrown onto the player waiting to tee off on the next tee. Obviously, 25 people are not enough to cover the full golf course which is nearly 4 miles
including the distance between holes, so players had to run after completion of one hole, while carrying their clubs, to position themselves further around the course. On a few holes, the team scored a par and took hardly a minute from tee to the golf hole, but on others lost balls, miss-hits ,wrongly placed players, took their toll and the round much longer. Ladies Captain Tracy Cawley and Senior's captain Eddie George (who both took part) were very pleased with the result even though it took 38 mins 15 seconds (4 minutes longer than last year).
New Captains at Stoke By Nayland
N
ovember is change over time at Stoke by Nayland when the 2016 captains end their year in office, and the new ones take over. At the Ladies Section AGM, Betty Cox was congratulated on her successful year, and Anne Hemmings was elected to take her place. It was a similar story at the Senior AGM with Norman Davidson taking over from Lionel Hatch. Matt Thompson is the new Junior Captain, replacing Sam Nixon. At the Main Club AGM, as well as the presentation of all the trophies, new Club Captain Don Wiggins and his Vice Captain Alan Line were elected. The Captain’s green jacket was presented to Don by outgoing Club Captain Ian Thompson. Four new Committee Members were also elected at this meeting, Scott Brace, Peter Garnett, Mark Chaplin and Ian Smith. In a break from tradition, the new Club Captain started his Drive In with a breakfast which was attended by over two hundred members. It was then up to the new captains, nervously,
to complete their drives to start the Drive In competition, which was held on both Stoke by Nayland Courses, Gainsborough and Constable.

HOW TO SURVIVE IN BAD WEATHER!
P
laying this time of year means you’re probably going to have to deal with some bad weather. Here are some ideas on how to deal with the bad weather and still shoot some good scores. BE PREPARED - A little bit of preparation makes a big difference. Make sure you have the right amount of layers on. Also, on cold days, a pair of mitts with a hand warmer in are essential to keep the feeling in your hands. MAKE SURE YOUR COURSE MANAGEMENT IS APPROPRIATE FOR THE CONDITIONS – Accept that and you may have to make a par by getting up and down. On some holes you may have to change your target such as on dog leg holes or holes over water. DON’T FIGHT THE WIND - The cold wind can have a big effect on your shots. When playing into the wind ensure you take plenty of club. If you normally hit a 7 iron from 150 yards it is not uncommon to hit a 3 or 4 iron when playing in the winter. DEVELOP A KNOCK DOWN SHOT A knock down shot is a shot that stays lower than your normal shot so should be less effected by the wind. To play it take one more club than you normally would and make a smaller swing than normal by playing the shot smoothly. This will give you more control.
LOVE THE CHALLENGE OF THE DAY - A good attitude is essential in the bad weather. It is difficult at times but aim to do the best you can on each shot, use your short game to rescue you and remember other people will be finding it difficult as well!

ARE YOU PREPARED FOR THE COLD SNAP? n
F
or those of you who read my recent Autumnal blog, let’s move it a step further as I am sure it will not be long until we experience the first cold snap of the year. Here are a few pointers designed to help you and your golf. n Let’s start off with a gentle warm up, this can be perceived in a variety of ways but gentle movements to replicate a golf swing. The idea is to increase the blood flow and produce gentle “glow” to the complexion so gentle shoulder rotations combined with leg swings forwards and sidewards is a good start. Never start your “warm up” with stretches, I see this much of the time from a distance particularly on the first tee, definitely one to avoid.
n
- 30 -
Look at your wardrobe, it is important to layer up so the warm air becomes trapped also the thinner fabrics allow movement in the golf swing. Try a merino wool base layer followed by a lightweight fleece layer then sweater followed by a gore-tex jacket. It is worth the investment in the long run as these are multipurpose jackets too. Hand warmers inside mittens are a necessity, the most popular brands can be activated by squeezing the contents which react within minutes and will certainly last the duration of the round. Look at using an all weather glove or definitely a pair of winter gloves in addition to mittens in between shots.
n
The format of play is important as enjoyment is still a factor in the winter so why not try foursomes which is a quicker game and still maintains the social element and of course the competitive one too. A winter eclectic is also a popular choice again playing with a purpose and a specific goal. n If you use both a Sand Wedge and lob wedge (60 Deg) try using your Lob wedge from the firmer compact sand as opposed to the Sandwedge as there is less bounce which will makes these shots easier. If you don’t own a LW then square the face of the SW so the leading edge makes contact with the sand first. Also, make sure you check the local rules regarding GUR (Ground under repair) and dropping from casual water in bunkers. n Distance is something we loose over the winter months so reassess and be realistic with your club selection, it does not matter what club we use to get to the flag! Try considering a driver with increased loft or possibly a 3 wood as this will provide a higher launch with more carry. This is true if there is a strong down wind as the breeze will lower the ball flight. n Make use of the preferred lies rule as even the slightest hint of mud can alter the ball flight dramatically. n If there is a trolley ban, then just take a few clubs out in a light weight bag you will be surprised how well you score. Be creative and enjoy your winter golf. I wish you all a very Happy Christmas and good golfing for 2017

Ingrebourne Links Golf & Country Club Targets June 2017 Launch
T
he concept of an inland ‘links’ golf course has often left many golfing purists puzzled at the shear contradiction in terms. Traditionally, the word ‘links’ meant the land adjoining the sea with the mainland, usually made up of sandy soils and natural, tall wispy grasses. The sort of thing we see every July at The Open.
Yet it seems the word, certainly in the last 15 years, has been adopted more as marketing term used to describe flat, newly built golf courses with little definition hole to hole and a plethora of staked trees. Such trees, on maturity at least, will render the course to classify as ‘parkland’, but as yet play no meaningful part in the golfers experience – and are unlikely to do so for many decades. To confound those traditionalists comes a project seven years in the making, located just off the A13 at Rainham. June 2017 will welcome Ingrebourne Links Golf & Country Club as the latest golf course to join the Essex crown. With it, arguably the most authentic ‘links’ golf experiences, located away from the sea, in the United Kingdom. Following extensive earthwork movements and considerable investment from Ingrebourne Valley Limited, the owning company, Ingrebourne Links will launch the first North 9-holes alongside the purpose-built, 1,600 square metre clubhouse – also home to a state-ofthe-art health club. The East 9-holes are anticipated to open in June 2018, with the final South 9-holes scheduled to open 12 months after that. The brainchild behind the golf course design is Alan Walker, former Captain of the Professional Golfers’ Association and member of the European Institute of Golf Course Architecture. Walker’s lifelong experience in the game, along with his ownership of Garon Park near Southend, gives him a unique perspective on ‘Essex golf ’.
What immediately draws your attention are the wide, undulating fairways and surrounding terrain. These are classic links course characteristics, where positioning of the ball off the tee plays such a crucial part to the games strategy. In addition, it’s already clear that the subtle inclines and declines around the greens will pose a real challenge to the short game, with a variety of shots needed to master the course. As well as recreating the natural landscaping characteristics of links golf, Ingrebourne Links Golf & Country Club has also adopted a number of traditional bunker construction techniques. The 9holes has over 30 bunkers, many of which have the ‘riveted’ face so familiar to this style of course. The 7th hole is also home to the largest sleeper-walled bunker, bringing with it as much an eye-catching feature as a troublesome hazard that’s sure to catch many a stray shot come June. The greens have been constructed to USGA specifications, the very concept of which has a close relationship to the natural greens occupying links courses. The sand subsoil allows for the free drainage of water and also creates the right environment to grow and maintain fine-leafed grasses that make for smooth, fast putting surfaces. Whereas the golf course has almost morphed steadily from the landscape, the new clubhouse has risen from the ground in double-quick time with the steal frame now in place. On completion, the contrast between the traditional golf course and the contemporary clubhouse will be stark, yet befitting a leisure and hospitality environment for the modern consumer.
- 34 -
In addition to the palatial locker rooms with hydrotherapy suite and convivial club bar and lounge areas, the clubhouse will also include a state-of-the-art gym, which will be home to the very latest touch-screen and mobile phone appintegrated equipment from Matrix. Add to this the fitness studio and dedicated spin-studio, playing host to both instructor-led and virtual classes, there will be a very definite broader lifestyle theme running through the veins of this impressive new club. The existing driving range and pro shop, 9 hole mini links and practice facilities which opened in July 2012 will remain a key part to the overall
offering of the facility. Head professional Darren Turner ably assisted by fellow PGA professionals Marcus Radmore and Andrew Clissold will be on hand to offer advice and golf tuition for all using the latest technology to enhance their pupils game. This combined with high quality driving range matts and range balls ensures a first class experience every time you visit. When completed Ingrebourne Links Golf and Country Club will offer a facility fit for the 21st century, yet respectful to the history of traditional golf course architecture. Mark June 2017 in your diaries - it’s a combination that’s going to be well worth a visit.

Chris’s Par 4 Hole in One! O
n Tuesday 29th November Stoke by Nayland Professional Chris Payne was playing a coaching round of golf, with students from the Westwood School, as part of his new role as a tutor at the School. He teed up on the Gainsborough Par 4 8th Hole, Stroke Index 6, using his Callaway Big Bertha Driver. The students and fellow tutor, Ian Mckay, saw the ball pitch, bounce and roll but could not see the ball as the green is not visible from the tee. On approaching the green, they could see a white dot, which they assumed was the ball but no, it was a lump of frost, and the ball was found in the hole! A very unlikely scenario - a hole in one on a Par 4 hole ... well done Chris.

Why Can’t I Get My Handicap Down? M
any of us strive for a lower handicap or simply want to become more consistent at golf. Questions and answers that we frequently hear demonstrate this.
• Do I have the best equipment for me personally? Yes, I had a full set of custom fit clubs this season. • Do I play enough golf? Yes, twice a week is as much as I can fit in. • Do I work at my game? Yes, I take regular lessons and practise regularly too. Well, surely that’s everything covered then? WRONG! How many times do we hear ‘Golf is all in the mind’? Well again, that’s WRONG too!
We still need a good technique, we can’t just simply ‘think’ we’ll hit a great shot. But when trying to perform at your best on the course how you use your ‘mind’ will go a long way in determining how well you perform and perhaps more importantly how much you enjoy your golf. So the question is, ‘When did you last work on improving your golf mind skills? ... Have you ever? The great thing is, it is easy, anyone can do it, at any level. A
t the top of the ‘wish list’ golfers look for technology to make them more consistent and to hit the ball further but if we take those two common golfing desires and look into them we start to see a few cracks appear. Firstly, consistency has to start with the golfer…if the player delivers the face of the club pointing right then that is where the ball will go (assuming a centre strike). Shafts and head combinations can make a golfer more consistent but not to the extent golfers are led to believe and no golf club can override a poor impact position…it can only help. If the golf shaft that a player uses is too light and flexible then dispersion could be an issue but too heavy and stiff can also cause the same problem. Finding the correct head and shaft combination will help consistency but it can’t cure all the problems. If you look at moveable weights in drivers you are not really moving enough weight to make a substantial difference. You may be able to effect the ball flight by 6 - 8 yards but not by the 20 - 30 yards many believe. In my opinion this type of technology is for ‘fine tuning’ only and not a ‘slicers’ saviour. Distance is the Holy Grail for many golfers, to the point that their score does not matter it’s just how far the ball goes. For me this is a great shame, there is nothing better than seeing a golfer who understands their own game and plays within it. For club golf it really has no relevance at all how far the top players hit the ball as you are not playing against them. Golf is a game of control and players need to hit to the ball far enough to be able to compete at their desired level, not the golfing athletes we now see on TV. So, where does this all leave fitting? If you think about it if the golfer has no clue what they are looking for and the fitter has no clue what they actually need it’s not going to end up in a good place. Sure, the golfer will have a nice new shiny set of clubs but will they be any better than the old set? Next time you decide to change equipment have a clear purpose what you are looking for. Be brand agnostic and buy on performance. Before you go for the fitting at the very least think about the last dozen or so rounds you played and where the weaknesses were in your game. Try to make the weakness stronger and your score will improve. Finally I would like to wish all the readers of both my articles and Essex Golfer a Happy Christmas and 2017 … may all your putts run true. Lee.

Futureproof Your Club G
olf club businesses need a strong foundation and good governance to thrive, not just survive. At a recent England Golf Business Growth Hub seminar, attended by nearly 20 Essex clubs, the point was made loud and clear - without a solid foundation, clear strategy and strong governance, how can a club expect to tackle, or even plan, for the challenges 3, 5 or 10 years ahead. Very few clubs can say they have a clear vision for the future. Much of my work, therefore, over the coming year, will be to support clubs
through the process of building those foundations to ensure clubs are thriving for the next generation of golfers. Defining the purpose of your club and the direction of your business is key to achieving growth. Developing a Business Plan, sounds intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be a long and difficult process. On 11th January, at Playgolf Colchester, we will be hosting a Changing Culture & Business Planning Workshop. It will be open for any club either wishing to take the first steps or those who have already started to take a strategic look at their club and seriously plan for the future.

Winter Months =
TIME TO IMPROVE!
A
year ago, I had the privilege of 2 former European Tour Winners opening my Putting Room at The Essex Golf & Country Club. Notably, Simon Khan and Paul Curry. Since the room has opened it has helped many people of different standards of golf to improve the business end of the game; that we all love to play. In the last year, I have also learn’t new techniques that will take your Putting to a new level. The thing I want to share with you this December and January are; How can you improve your Golf in the Winter Months? The biggest and easiest improvement can be improving your putting.Yes, you can improve your putting stroke but to learn how to Green Read in an environment that you can alter the slope and situation on The Zen Green Stage can only improve your understanding in a real time situation in your practice. A tip for this month is; Stand at the low point of the hole at least 4 feet from it ie a straight uphill putt (This is also known as The Zero Break Line), see where your ball is in relation to this line and then determine if the putt you have is right to left or left to right or indeed straight. You may also find that the putt may have more than 1 break in it. NOTE: Please be careful not to tread
- 48 -
on your own line and others whilst doing this. The Zen Green Stage can simulate most putts within a 10ft to 15ft radius from the hole with single or double breaks as well as the usual straight putts. However, I was on Twitter in the last few days and found this from Karl Morris, who says in a post by @ZenGolf, “It’s been a long time in the golf industry since I’ve been excited about a product as good as ‘The Zen Green Stage’. Practice environment is more like the real thing, rather than people hour after hour working in sterile fixed environments repeating the same stroke over and over again, rather than practice on a green that you can simulate as on a golf course” Recently, a former major winner has been working on his breaking putts on a Zen Green Stage and won a notable tournament on The PGA Tour. I am doing vouchers for Christmas, so if you want to improve have a go at my tip for the Month and to help it further come and see me and I can show you the way to get the most from not only your putting but how to read greens that will also help chipping and other aspects of short game. Have a great Christmas and Best Wishes to all my clients and readers of Essex Golfer Magazine for 2017! Let us make it a great golfing year!

The
Jubilee Cup Update from Jubilee Cup Committee, sponsored by Seabrook Warehousing, and reported by Chairman Phil Redhead
T
WELCOME TO THE 2017 JUBILEE CUP COMPETITION
he Jubilee Cup competition held its Annual General Meeting at Chelmsford Golf Club at the end of November, and completed the 2017 Draw. Thank you to Andrew Pestell and Neil Wells at Chelmsford for hosting the representatives of the 47 clubs who have entered into next years’ competition. As Chairman of the competition, I was able to say how proud I am to represent the competing clubs, along with my fellow committee members, and receive in the constant notes of thanks and support from players and club representatives. It is not an untruth to say that many players love the spirit and format of our competition above all in Essex. Amazing to think that, during the 2016 competition, the Jubilee Cup played 96 matches, and involved 862 individual Essex mid-handicap golfers of range 12 to 28 handicaps. I’d would like to thank all those clubs who hosted neutral knock-out finalist events - specifically Rayleigh, Bentley, Crondon Park, Three Rivers, Colchester, and Brentwood Golf Clubs. Much appreciated, thank you everyone involved in those clubs - with especial thanks to Sue Phillips at Brentwood, and her team for a wonderful Finals meal from her catering team! Also thanks to the printers of our roaming scoreboards on such events, and the excellent folk at Birkdale Trophies www.birkdale-trophies.co.uk who provided all the trophies and engraving. To look forward to 2017. Despite having lost a club due to external business pressures, the Jubilee Cup competition has its highest number of competing clubs – with 47 having been drawn. Welcome to our new entrants for this year from Braintree, Canons Brook, Frinton and Theydon Bois golf clubs. BRILLIANT to have you along in the family! The draw has established 8 Divisions/Leagues, of which each club will play 4 matches (two home and two away) with a win gaining 2 Leagues points. The top two clubs of each League (based on points, and hole difference), as a result of format change this year, will then progress to a “round of 16” knockout phase, prior to the Quarter & Semi-Finals. The League matches are detailed fully on our website, and once played you will be able to see the detailed results down to individual player/4BBB team level: www.jubileecup.com/matches2017/divix17.html The four League rounds themselves will need to be played by the timescales below, so promises to be a busy spring and summer in 2017 - as it made clear to the teams at the AGM however, any of the games can be played prior to those deadlines. We even had a club in 2016 who had completed all their matches practically by end of May, and so a whole month ahead of final completion at last. - 50 -

However, congratulations go to Andy Simmond’s Crondon team, who will now be planning to secure their place in the 2017 Final in September. The Committee is looking forward to a great year, and as Chairman I have to offer my thanks for all of their hard work also this year - Neil Mitchell (Competition Secretary), Alan Tindall (Treasurer), Christer Stenbacka (Web Guru), Colin Firth (ex-Chairman) and Neil Wells (Secretary) specifically. Bennett’s Birdies Success S
arah Bennett PGA Head Teaching Professional at Three Rivers Golf & Country Club held her annual Bennett’s Birdies Golf day at Three Rivers. The day was a huge success despite the threat of storm “Angus” with only a few holes being played but Sarah had a variety of contingencies in place. The maximum number of 22 ladies were in attendance, all whom Sarah started off on their golfing journey or coaches with all ladies now playing regular golf. Two of the ladies ironically used to teach Sarah at school with Sarah now reversing the roles! “It is the combination of the social element and values golf can bring to people’s lives, everyone generally plays golf for the same reason, the only difference being their own personal targets. Many colleagues and friends ask about the success of the event but it is simply the old adage “word of mouth”. There is no advertising for the day as people these days don’t read notice boards! The best Christmas hat was won by Julie which
was mistaken for a real cake! Well done Julie this was the second consecutive year she has won the coverted title. A fantastic shot to 4 ft won nearest the pin with all 6 teams finishing within 5 shots of each other in the

THE 86TH ESSEX AMATEUR GOLF UNION ANNUAL DINNER
The 2016 Annual Dinner was hosted at Colne Valley Golf Club on Friday the 25th November. In attendance were representatives from 20 Clubs from all corners of the county. Guest Speaker John Williams, President Elect of England Golf, presented our County President, Mike Hart, with an England Golf Tie acknowledging the hard work that Mike has put in over his two year term of office and his previous contribution to County golf. John also thanked the Essex Golf Union for their continued hard work, making reference to all of our volunteers that work to assist the County’s smooth operation of County Golf. Those to get a special mention were David Follows and Stephen Bonnington, who have shown professionalism and commitment in working alongside John at National level. John indicated that in his view Essex have a strong group of rules officials and our County should be very proud of such a team. Mike Hart, Essex County President also addressed the room and stressed his thanks to the members of the Essex Golf Union during his two year role as County President, and to all the Clubs that support the activities the Union undertake. Mike was very gracious and thanked John for his kind words before introducing Roger Walmsley as Essex's forthcoming County President to take over from Mike at the AGM in February. After the dinner, the four winning Clubs of our 2016 County Team knockout Competitions were presented with commemorative shields by Mike Hart, assisted by County Secretary, Nick McEvoy. - 53 -

Mike explained that Jay had been part of Essex golf since he was 12, an ever present in the Essex men’s team this year and that he was very pleased to be able to present him with this award. Jay, from Eastwood near Rayleigh, is now 25 and has a long association with the county, first winning the Under 16 county championships in 2007, he was also a Faldo series finalist and then 2 years later, in 2009, he won the under 18 county championship. He also helped the county win the National Men’s County Championship at Chipping Sodbury in a team that included Matthew Southgate. After captaining the Colts team in 2010, Jay turned pro in 2011. After returning to the Amateur ranks Jay’s love of the game was lost for a couple of years whilst he started work, but in 2015 the lure of the green was just too much and he joined The Rayleigh Club. Despite being a “bit rusty” Jay managed a number of top five finishes in county competitions enabling him to win the County Order of Merit for 2015. A great return to the game in his first year back. In 2016 Jay has had another excellent season, with regular top ten finishes in the County Order of Merit events, including a win at the Romford Trophy in September. Jay takes up the story in his own words: The highlight of my season being The English Men’s Amateur Championship held at Ganton Golf Club and Scarborough South Cliff Golf Club at the end of July. After two tough rounds of strokeplay I finished 19th out of the 286 entrants, comfortably qualifying for the matchplay phase. Winning two matches took me through to the last 16 where I was unfortunately beaten at the third extra hole, my opponent making birdie to close out the match. A disappointing finish, but I felt I had performed well at such a prestigious event. Jay became the Order of Merit winner once again this year after a series of good performances throughout the summer. All these consistent performances made Jay an easy pick for the Presidents Golfer of the Year and we wish him well as the newly appointed Essex Men’s County Captain for 2017. - 55 -

NATIONAL HONOURS FOR CAI
Congratulations to Cai James for his achievements in 2016 and his commitment to County golf over this last year. The season started with a weeklong trip to Temple Patrick Golf Club, Belfast, representing Wales U16’s in the annual Quad Match against Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands. Following a good performance at the Quad match, Cai was selected as the Welsh representative for the British Junior Open, held at Barassie Golf Club, Troon. The event is held once every two years and is organised by the R&A to coincide with The Open Championship. Each country affiliated to the R&A is invited to send one Under 16 boy and one girl. Previous entrants have included Sergio Garcia, Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth. To complete a busy July, Cai competed in the Colchester Golf Club Men’s Championship. Following 36 holes of close competition he was tied at the top of the leaderboard, resulting in a play-off. On the third extra hole a birdie ensured he became 2016 Club Champion. To finish the international season Cai was selected for the final U16 match against England, at Newport Golf Club. This match involves two rounds of singles and foursomes matchplay and good performances further enhanced his growing reputation. In addition to representing Wales, Cai has also represented the Essex U16 team on numerous occasions during a year when they have remained undefeated in all competitions. The future looks good for both Cai and County golf, we look forward to another year of positive progress in 2017. Cai is a member of Colchester GC and a pupil at Philip Morant School where he will be studying towards taking his GCSE examinations next year.
CONGRATULATIONS MIKE & MARION
The county are very pleased to announce that the President, Mike Hart, married his long time partner, Marion, a few weeks ago. The members of the board and staff would like to wish Mike and his new wife a long and happy time together. - 56 -

n the space of half a decade, Louis Taylor has progressed from novice golfer to club champion of Woodford Golf Club. Encouraged by his father Adam, the City of London pupil took up the game at the age of 12 and is now down to the same 12 handicap as his dad, aided by lessons from the club professional, Kenny Banks. Louis also won the Mead Challenge Cup during the year, but the real deal was capturing the club championship at the tender age of 17 while still in the junior membership ranks. He was presented with the cup at the club’s Trophy Night event by retiring 2016 Captain Stephen Briggs in his last official engagement.

tock Brook Manor Golf Club saw three new Captains drive in this November and history was made as for the first time a couple became Club Captain and Lady Captain in the same year. “We are delighted to both be serving the club at the same time and have some great events planned for 2017 as we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Club” said new Club Captain Martin Paterson. His drive-in had 120 members playing a shotgun competition, on a sunny and still Remembrance Sunday. The drive-in for Laura Lee saw the ladies section arrive in a cocktail themed fancy dress.
The men’s contribution was the traditional wearing of pink tops. Ninety of the club ladies and men came to play and celebrate. One of Laura’s key announcements was that for the first time in a decade there will be a Ladies Anniversary Open in August 2017. The final drive in was that of the Seniors Captain Mike Smith, with another fabulous turn out on Wednesday. Mike said “I hope that this coming year will be even more successful than last year, as the Seniors Section goes from strength to strength.” All three Captains are proud to be supporting St Lukes Hospice as their charity for the year.

erfect autumnal conditions greeted a superb field of golfers at Colne Valley Golf Club on Sunday for the annual Captains Drive in. As last year’s captains Sue Gilbert and Jerry Callow stepped aside after a sterling year and handed the reigns over to Lesley Knight and Gary Beck respectively.
Following the drive in two teams, Captains vs Vice Captains, battled it out in match play format with Gary’s captain team being the eventual winners of the trophy. Lots of spot prizes were on offer during the day with Jean Adams, Sue Petchey and Corinne Burnford winning the ladies nearest the pin whilst the men’s honours went to Roger Warren, Roger Cook and Phillip Reeves. There was also prizes for Roger Cook and Alessandra Callow for the biggest win over their opponents and Norris Silk was the closest to guessing the length of Lesley’s and Gary’s drive combined. The day was enjoyed by all members new and old and a fantastic total of £839.45 was raised for The Essex Air Ambulance. Earlier on in the week Dianne Jeggo took the spoils in the ladies stableford, her 34 points was good enough to see off Marion Gaunt effort of 32.
