TEE OFF
Playing golf with friends and family is one of life's more pleasant pursuits. Particularly so, when the weather is fine; a small wager, good company and a pint or gin and tonic at the 19th. You could not ask for more. But for many golfers, the lure of competition is a strong attraction. To be able to pit your skills and nerve against a field of strangers is the ultimate test of golf. Competitive golf takes many forms. Individual golf clubs organise numerous events for their members throughout the year and golf societies offer three or four golf days a year. Charity and corporate days are good and more clubs are offering open events for nonmembers. There are also a couple of tours for golfers who don't belong to clubs. With all competitive golf, the drawback has always been the issue of handicap certificates. However, the majority of organisers recognise this problem and will discuss with individual golfers how to overcome it. Every month, Essex Golfer magazine publishes a list of forthcoming events which you can play in. Take the time to read through these. If you find one you like, call the organiser to discuss the format and requirements, or check it out online. The first time you play in a competition you will make new friends, have a great time and see a new side of golf. You may not win, but you cannot possibly lose.

Megan’s off to North Carolina 18 year old Essex student Megan Taylor graduated from the Lee Westwood Golf School in July with a 4 year plan already in place. In August Megan will leave the UK to take her spot at the Wingate University in North Carolina. Megan, who was contacted directly by the university, has received a near full scholarship and over the 4 year period will be studying for a degree whilst playing tournament golf. The coaches at Lee Westwood Golf School were directly involved with the coaches from Wingate, providing them with information on Megan’s game and work ethic. This included the knowledge that Megan, from St Neots, had joined the School with a 6.2 handicap and over the course of 2 years has reduced that to 2.6. During her time at the School Megan has represented Lee Westwood Golf School in the British Schools & Colleges finals and was the Essex 2013 Year 2 Order of Merit winner. She has also enjoyed the opportunities of unique experiences including work experience at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship where she walked a hole alongside Lee Westwood. www.leewestwoodgolf.com

Magical Mickelson wins The Open Phil Mickelson mastered Muirfield with a magnificent final round of 66 to win his first Open Championship. The American, who claimed the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open the previous week, charged to the front with four birdies in his final six holes to lift the Claret Jug with a three under par total. Overnight leader Lee Westwood finished four shots back after a 75, while Henrik Stenson took the runner-up spot with a 70.
Did you know? – The 142nd Open Championship • Muirfield Golf Club’s full title is The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. • Golf at Muirfield began in 1891 with 16 holes designed by Old Tom Morris. The course was extended to 18 holes for The Open Championship of 1892, the first time the course was used for the Championship. The winner that year was amateur Harold Hilton, playing in his first Open. Hilton is the only player in Championship history to win an Open on his first appearance at Muirfield. • The Championship won by Hilton was the first to be contested over 72 holes. He won with a score of 305. • The Open Championship returned to Muirfield in 1896 where Harry Vardon won the first of his recordbreaking six titles, defeating J H Taylor in a play-off. • The list of winners of The Open Championship at Muirfield include: Vardon (1896), James Braid (1901), Ted Ray (1912), Walter Hagen (1929), Sir Henry Cotton (1948), Gary Player (1959), Jack Nicklaus (1966), Lee Trevino (1972), Tom Watson (1980), Sir Nick Faldo (1987and 1992) and Ernie Els (2002). • Sir Nick Faldo is the only golfer to win The Open Championship twice at Muirfield. His 1987 triumph was his first Major Championship title, after making 18 straight pars in the final round to beat Paul Azinger and Rodger Davis by one shot. • Isao Aoki went into the record books by shooting the lowest round in an Open Championship played at Muirfield. He shot an eight under par round of 63 in round three of the 1980 Championship. He eventually tied 12th. At the time this was only the second 63 ever recorded in an Open. The first was by Mark Hayes at Turnberry in 1977.

Balance - the key to a stable swing The movement of the golf swing is very much a dynamic movement. It needs to move at speed, be stable and retain a central position over the golf ball. To do this you must be in balance. Posture When we address the ball, our first objective is to create a posture that can accommodate two things, we must allow our body to face the ball on the ground and secondly do so in such a way that we retain the natural balance that is inbuilt in the body. Follow the sequence in the pictures. Picture 1 Body standing upright, sense where your weight is under vPicture 1. 14
your feet? I would suggest that you will find it somewhere between your heels and the balls of your feet, definitely not on the toes and more likely towards the heels. Be very aware of this as you go to picture 2. Picture 2 I have pushed my belt buckle Picture 2. directly behind me, at the moment there is no knee flex, but you will notice my upper body is facing towards the ball; not my eyes or face but the middle of my chest and spine. As I have done this, it is imperative that I have maintained the same weight distribution under my feet, not on the toes but favouring the heels. Picture 3.
Picture 3 My final stage in setting a balanced posture. A very slight knee flex, critically here I still have not disrupted the weight distribution under my feet; still not on the toes but towards the heels. Now throughout the swinging motion - I have maintained this weight distribution under my feet. Pictures 4, 5 and 6 Demonstrate this. Post impact the body will tend to straighten out of this balanced posture, and the weight will move to the back of the left heel.

SkySports European Father and Son Golf Championship moves the grand final to Almeria, Andalucia Spain RedGolf the promoters of the European Father & Son Golf Championship have announced the 2013 Grand Final will be held at the excellent Valle del Este Golf Resort in the sunny, hot desert of Almeria Andalucia during the school term holidays 28th October to 2nd November. The championship is a 54 hole two ball better ball stapleford for handicap and scratch titles. Father and Son teams come from all over Europe to compete. There is no age restriction only a max handicap of 24 with 3/4 stroke allowance. Last years Championship oldest competitor was Norman Taylor from South Africa 90 years of age and son Leslie 57 and the youngest son being 10 years old. James & Graham Ruth 2012 European Champions The event celebrates 'family' and fathers and sons spending quality time together. Many teams come in sporting identical team outfits which adds to the exciting colourful spectacle. The promoters try to run the event as close to a PGA event as possible giving ordinary golfers the experience, pressure and excitement of a pro event. Tournament Director Toby Marsden says "although we have some very experienced Professionals play in our event like Ryder Cup Golfer Paul Broadhurst we also have ordinary golfers. We have first tee announcers, loud speakers, giant scoreboards, referees, press, SkySports cameras, caddies and crowds. Our main aim is to give some of the younger players invaluable tournament experience and help springboard them on to greater successes in their careers. Our dream is one day one of our lads will go on to become a famous tour player and we can proudly say we contributed in a small way." Off the golf course the competitors and their families congregate in the hotel resort to enjoy each others company. The Championship starts with a welcome drink reception and finishes with a swanky Gala Dinner and Prize Giving as well as all being together in the hotel in the evenings on a half board basis. During the week additional competitions including longest drives and nearest the pins, putting and chipping competitions are held. The package includes tournament entry, transfers, accommodation, half board, golf, prizes, welcome drink and gala dinner. Gary’s Travel log Bulgaria Shhh!!! Don’t tell anyone We have often prided ourselves on finding new destinations. We were early golf specialist visitors to Turkey now look at it; a thriving golf destination, and also recently we visited Kenya as golf tourists and what a fantastic time we had there. I am going to share with you our most recent discovery, but please don’t tell anyone as we don’t want hoards of golfers descending onto what is the most amazing golf destination, Varna in Bulgaria. Before it has any chance of becoming a top golf destination, flying to Varna does have to become a little more accessible, we flew Wiz Air from Luton this is the only flight going to Varna on a Saturday. There is I believe another flight from Birmingham on a Thursday. I must confess there was a certain amount of leg pulling when mentioning Wiz Air, but they were fine, as good as most other airlines. We played three courses, which are all that is there at the moment, The Lighthouse, Black Sea Ram and Thracian Cliffs. The Lighthouse designed by Ian Woosnam and attached to our hotel of the same name was very pleasant and very playable, a modern design good greens and good holes, everyone in our party scored well here. Next we played Black Sea Rama, odd name but a magnificent Gary Player designed layout, one of the best courses I have played anywhere. Finally, the most stunning and spectacular course I have played worldwide, the amazing Thracian Cliffs. Host two weeks before to the Volvo Match play, designed again by Gary Player and what a visionary to be able to fit this course into this piece of land incredible, I will say that smug little old me was the only person not to lose a ball, and one of our guests lost eleven !! The Lighthouse hotel was excellent and our guided tour to Balchik also very interesting, so, all in all; we had a great time, and yes we are definitely going back sooner rather than later; so if you would like to join us visit the garypikegolf.com web site, and head for the calendar, for all of our escorted holidays, tours and tuition breaks.

Tom Watson receives Golf Foundation ‘Spirit of Golf ’ Award The winner of The Open at Muirfield in 1980, Watson received the award from the charity that changes the lives of young people through golf, in front of a packed audience at the R&A Swingzone in Muirfield’s tented village. Foundation President Colin Montgomerie was there to lead the welcome for Tom and warmly praised his contribution to the sport. Also starring in the zone was a group of young local children. The boys and girls played in a ‘Tri-Golf’ challenge against Tom and then asked him questions about how he started in the game as a young boy in Kansas, encouraged to play by his father.

The Golf Foundation works to make golf more accessible to children from all backgrounds through its HSBC Golf Roots programme.

From one extreme to the other - use the weather Well, the temperature has risen from a lowly 17 degrees to tropical 30 degrees in the space of days and as golfers we have to make adjustments to the now fast running fairways and what we perceive to be unlucky bounces and playing to firm greens. These adjustments require creativity and vision and how best to play a variety of shots whilst reducing the amount of hook or slice spin! The player who achieves this at Club level and Muirfield will be victorious. (Who will it be?) I would like to share with you one of my most natural and inexpensive training aids along with my favourite distance control putting drills. Make use of the sun! Sarah’s shadow drill is great for working on a number of swing issues such as. • Backswing Sway • Lack of Upper-Body rotation • Reverse Spine angle • Over swing I have only chosen a select few, but it certainly gives you instant feedback with limited finance! Tee pegs can be placed in the ground to indicate the starting point and end result of the movement required. This can also be used for putting to note any lower-body movement. Sarah’s Sub Par Game This is my favourite putting drill to work upon distance control whilst achieving the most suitable speed at which the putt should be hit at the hole.( “capture distance.”) If the ball is travelling too quickly the 4 ¼” size of the hole will be greatly reduced. Once set up the distances between each ball can be increased or decreased depending upon the length of putt to be practised.
1. 5 Balls set up two paces from the hole with a club placed just under a foot behind the hole acting as the “no go zone” 2. The balls are putted once from each position, with the scoring as detailed below.
28
The Heart of Golf in Essex. www.essexgolfer.com
If the ball strikes the club or is short of the hole, then your score for that ball is +1 (Bogey)
If the ball finishes between the hole and the club, it counts as a par (even) The ball has every chance of being holed and finishes within a respectable distance.
A putt holed counts as a birdie (-1 under par)
The player’s score of the 5 putts is the cumulative total of each ball. This game can be played individually or against each other for some friendly competition for a cool drink on a hot day!
I will be holding a series of mixed & Ladies group lessons so please contact me directly if you are interested in attending. W: sarahbennettgolf.co.uk E: sarahbennettgolf@gmail.com Don’t forget to watch the Solheim Cup from Colorado and support the defending European Team.

Society of Essex Lady Captains 2nd Summer Meeting at Bentley a resounding success! The Society of Essex Lady Captains second Summer Meeting took place at Bentley Golf Club in mid July. With a large field of almost 90 past and present Essex Lady Captains attending, the club allowed us to tee off from 4 tees which meant everyone got onto the course in less than an hour. Summer had finally arrived but a welcome breeze helped to keep the temperature to a pleasant level. The course was in excellent condition and the scores in the 4BBB competition were high. Liz Potter last year's Lady Captain hosted the day and Club Captain Eddie Carrick had great pleasure in joining all the ladies in the evening for the meal and prize giving. Liz and her very helpful band of ladies helped to ensure the day went really well and the halfway hut was very much appreciated by all. The ladies enjoyed a truly delicious meal, before the presentation of the prizes. Thanks to Bentley Golf Club for hosting the event and making us all very welcome. It was a high scoring day with any pair with less than 23 The winners with Eddie Carrick (Club Captain Bentley) points on each nine or less than 44 points overall, not getting and Jan Collier (Lady President of the Society). a look in at the prizes. Two pairs finished with 46 points and in 4th place were Jane Sheehan Warley Park GC and Karen Curran Ilford GC, 3rd place went to Chris Wilkins Warley Park GC and Val Millhouse Rayleigh. In second place with 47 points ocb were June Morgan Langdon Hills GC and Carolyn Harris Braintree, the overall winners of the day and the Joyce Layland Cup, also with 47 points, were Jane Collier Forrester Park GC and Judie Dunbar Channels GC.

NEWS FROM FAR AND WIDE: During the past few weeks, a number of our County players competed in some national and regional open tournaments. Some of them acquitted themselves very well indeed. We are proud of them all. Now read on: The 72 hole English Men’s Open Stroke Play Championship (Brabazon Trophy) was played on 26th to 29th June at Formby in Lancashire. In an international field of 150 players, Jack Hiluta (Chelmsford) finished in 37th place while Bobby Keeble (Crowlands Heath) finished 44th. The 36 hole England Golf South Eastern Group Men’s County Qualifier was played on 13th July at South Bedfordshire Golf Club. In a field of 65, Andy May (Boyce Hill) finished 8th, Jordan Wallace (Abridge) finished 11th and James Allen (Chelmsford) finished 12th. The 72 hole English Boy’s Under 16 Open Stroke Play Championship (McGregor Trophy) was played at Seacroft on 16th to 18th July. In an international field of 144, Louis Lazarus (Romford) finished in 5th place. His final round of 69 was 5 shots below the CSS. A fine performance indeed. The 36 hole England Golf Junior Championship was played at Sundridge Park on 17th July. In a field of 81, Mitchel Sarling (Rochford Hundred) finished in 10th place, Taylor Carter (also of Rochford Hundred) finished 16th and Dominic Piccolo (Channels) finished 21st. The 72 hole English Boy’s Open Stroke Play Championship (Carris Trophy) will be played at West Lancashire Golf Club from 23rd – 26th July. Last year our County amateur Champion Bobby Keeble (Crowlands Heath) came within a whisker of winning this prestigious event, losing in a playoff at the fourth extra hole. This year Bobby will be trying to go one better. Daniel Garner (Romford) is also in the starting line-up, his handicap having recently come down to scratch. We wish them both success. MEANWHILE BACK ON HOME TURF: The Herbert Bishop Vase was hosted by Boyce Hill Golf Club on Thursday 27th June. On a challenging course the scoring was very competitive, the team finishing in 18th place being only 5 stableford points behind the winners

Medals were awarded to the teams placed first and second. The highest placed six teams won prizes of bottles of wine. This competition is open to the Captains and Secretaries of affiliated clubs or nominated committee members. Forty Clubs fielded a team. Three Clubs fielded a Lady in their team. One of them, Julie Ruscoe of Colchester Golf Club was among the prize winners with playing partner Barrie Minns. He went on to thanks them not only for a very memorable afternoon and evening, but also for their staunch and generous support for the County Golf Union over many decades. He then presented an inscribed glass memento to Brian Munro as a mark of our appreciation. He concluded by wishing the Club a most happy and memorable 50th Anniversary year and our very best wishes for the future. We eventually departed into the night with our hearts and minds full of goodwill towards our hosts. CLIFFORDS TROPHY Channels Golf Club – Thursday 18th July 2013
very kindly invited County President John Peters and Essex Golf Union representatives to play a friendly match against their Captain and past captains on Wednesday 26th June and dine with them afterwards. We cannot speak too highly of their generous hospitality. It was a day not to be missed. After a light lunch we proceeded to the First Tee where Cyril Beaton, their only surviving founder member, presented each of our 12 players with a sleeve of golf balls, each ball inscribed with a reference to the Canons Brook 50th Anniversary – a collector’s item that was much appreciated. The 18 holes four ball better ball match resulted in a draw; not just an “honourable draw” but a real draw, 3 games each. How friendly is that ! After a change of clothes and a pause for rehydration we sat down to dine. During the course of an excellent meal; Cyril Beaton told us about the first ever golf played on the course. The first 9 holes became open for play in May 1963. An inaugural fourball game was played by Henry Cotton who designed the course: Sir Richard Costain (the first Club Captain) whose company built it: Cyril, who was the first ViceCaptain and Ian Large who was their first Club Professional. As Cyril said, it was an awesome experience playing in such company but something to look back on with pride and pleasure. Captain Brian Munro then proposed a toast to the Essex Golf Union and presented our County 36
Cliffords Trophy winner- Sam Bray (Maylands GC) With Tony Stubbings the proprietor of Channels GC, the sponsor of the event and John Peters, President of the Essex Golf Union.
In 2008 Channels Golf Club very generously donated the Clifford Trophy to the County Golf Union and the competition has become a very popular event in the Order of Merit calendar. 69 players contested the Cliffords Trophy which is a 36 hole stroke play event sponsored by Tony Stubbings and family. In extremely hot and humid conditions the recently revised Channels course layout was presented in excellent condition and proved a stern albeit very trying test of golf especially given the unusually warm weather. The event was won by Sam Bray from Maylands Golf Club with a 2 round total of 145, in 2nd place was Taylor Carter (Rochford Hundred) on

The County got off to a tremendous start with County Captain Alex Woodward and Mitchell Sarling Leading the way, closely followed by Andy May and Gary Oliver and the newly crowned “Jordanians” giving Essex a 3-1 advantage in the morning foursomes. The afternoon singles produced some superb golf

www.bodysenseukltd.co.uk Feeling hot hot hot! As you may know by now, i’m always standing on my soap box about the fundamental necessity to hydrate, not least for optimal golfing performance! More so, reaching for the Evian may not be enough. Studies show that under conditions of excessive heat and especially acute perspiration, then sports drinks replenish both lost fluids and electrolytes (Still Lucozade Sport, ORS and SIS are all good brands – try each in the sporting environment to establish which products suits you best). For some, getting sufficient fluids can prove taxing. Therefore, make your diet more ‘wet’ too! Use the following guide to boost fluids….. Water Content of Fruits and Vegetables: Apples 85% Olives Apricots 85% Onions Bananas 76% Oranges Bean Sprouts 92% Papayas raw Broccoli 91% Peaches raw Cabbage raw 92% Pears raw Cantaloupe 91% Peppers green Carrots raw 91% Pineapple Celery 94% Plums Cherries raw 80% Potatoes Coconut dried 7% Radishes Corn, sweet fresh 74% Raspberries Cucumbers raw 96% Spinach raw Aubergines raw 92% Squash boiled Grapefruit raw 88% Strawberries Grapes 82% Sweet potatoes Kale 87% Tomatoes raw Lettuce head 92% Watercress raw Watermelon 93%

SGD Appointed At Boyce Hill Swan Golf Designs has been appointed by Boyce Hill Golf & Country Club in Essex, to conduct a detailed audit of their bunkering and to make recommendations for its improvement as part of a long-term renovation project. Founded by a group of members from nearby Leigh Park Golf Club, golf was first played at Boyce Hill in 1922 on a layout designed by local professional F.G. “Joe” Steel. However, the course was redesigned by James Braid just three years later, with the reconstruction carried out by Taylor & Hawtree Ltd. The course has remained largely the same since, with only a few new tees and bunkers added over the years. Today, measuring just over 6000 yards, the course represents a stiff challenge to those looking to match the par score of 68. Boyce Hill is now set to become the latest Braid designed golf course to be renovated under the guidance and supervision of Swan Golf Designs, joining a long list that includes The Downs Course at Goodwood, Tyrrells Wood Golf Club and Kingswood Golf & Country Club. With the survey of the course already complete, the team at SGD is analysing the course and relevant details before formulating their recommendations. "Confused About Cardio?" Cardiovascular exercise is a massive discussion within the fitness Industry. The media, NHS/government advertise widely that long duration cardio is essential for health and fitness.........professionals within the fitness industry like myself totally disagree. There is most certainly a place for long walks and cycle rides; however, I would say this is more for the training of the mind! Athletes who run marathons or do long, big endurance events are also totally different as they have to do some long duration/distance cardio to better their sport. Some golfers would say...... “They are endurance athletes in that case"?? To an extent, yes this is true; however, in my opinion and my experience in training golfers walking the course is the easy bit!!!!! Golfers get good at this by practising their sport!!! So what should golfers be doing when it comes to Cardio!!? My answer would be 100% sprint training. A form of HIIT (high intensity interval training). I believe sprint training or interval training is a "fast track to fitness" but also is absolutely essential in building power, speed, agility and quickness in a sportsman. Not only does your cardiovascular fitness improve with sprints or interval training, but you also build lean muscle tissue. With sprinting, in particular, I believe your obliques (one of the most important set of muscles in golfers to produce power!!) strengthen and develop amazingly!! Look at a long distance runner vs a sprinter in the Olympics!! What body looks the strongest and most powerful!!!? So, some people due to injuries cannot sprint, this is fine, chose another form.........the rower is great to do intervals on, the cross trainer can be used although not my favourite and also the bike! For the more advanced athlete, sprints can be performed up hills too, which is one of my favourites!!! Ouch! Lastly......how!!? Part 2 of this article I will discuss exactly how you can start bringing sprint training into your week; a lot of bootcamps will incorporate sprint training so you may be able to find one nearby that will teach you......my Bootcamp is every Sunday 830am-10am at crowne plaza resort five lakes in which I focus a lot on sprint training. Contact me for more info. Look forward to bombarding with you with sprint training in the next article!!! Enjoy the sunshine!

Gary Player Appears in ESPN The Magazine’s ‘Body Issue’
ESPN The Magazine has featured the legendary golfer Gary Player in the line-up of athletes for their fifth annual ‘Body Issue’. At age 77, Player, who is widely regarded as a pioneer in sports fitness and as Golf’s ‘Global Ambassador’, will be the oldest athlete in the feature’s five-year history. “Fitness has been a passion, a way of life and one of the keys to my success in golf,” said Player, who has won 165 golf championships worldwide, including nine Majors. “When ESPN approached me with this unique opportunity to show off my body that has served me so well over my 60 year career, I agreed in the hopes that it would be inspiration for others to live well.” The Black Knight went on to say he was “honoured to do so.”
Also featured is Ladies European Tour Golfer Carly Booth who said: “This will probably be the first time my father finds out about my tattoos!” “Being included in this magazine along with some of today’s young superstar athletes has been an enjoyable experience,” said Player. “I hope my appearance demonstrates the importance and value of maintaining your body and making a lifelong commitment to staying fit and healthy.” ESPN The Magazine’s fifth annual ‘Body Issue’ www.ESPN.com/BodyIssue Gary Player www.GaryPlayer.com Report by golfbusinessnews.com

Lost Earring The summer before last I found a lovely earring on the 17th green at Five Lakes GC on the Links course. Despite my best efforts I was never able to reunite it with its owner. Somebody’s day was probably spoilt when they realised they had lost it, so I am hoping that we can make that person’s day if we can reunite the earring with its owner. Fingers crossed Julie Dent Hon Secretary Five Lakes Golf Club
Letters to the Editor Having played our wonderful game for nearly fifty years I have always been interested in its history. I recently came across a report of a presentation to Mr Tiger Woods subsequent to his 1997 masters win and his three U.S. Amateurs. He was awarded the Arnold Palmer Award by the great man himself but before presenting the new kid on the block with the award he said, and I quote. “I have something to say. You (Tiger) have an enormous responsibility. When I think of when I started playing the U.S. Tour so long ago and how much it has changed, it is truly amazing. I think we should all be very thankful, but we should also be very careful. Remember how we got here and the guys who helped us to get here. You guys are now playing for vast sums of money. Always remember that you have an obligation to protect the integrity and traditions of the game. It is important. When I see bad conduct, it truly disturbs me. It’s all right here, he said, placing his hands on Tiger’s shoulders. The responsibility is on all your shoulders. Protect the game. It’s beautiful.” Sadly, he did not listen. Using Flighscope to take your game to a New Level You may have seen that many of the top pros are using Flighscope or Trackman to help them improve their game. Justin Rose has used it with his coach Sean Foley extensively; so if it is being used at the highest level what benefit can it have for the average golfer? I have been using it in my coaching and I can honestly say it has taken things to a new level for coach and player.
What is Flightscope & what information does it give you? Flightscope does 2 things. Firstly, it tracks the ball via Doppler radar and gives information about the ball flight; including distance, direction, spin, speed, launch angle & more. The other thing it does is track the club in 3D giving information regarding how the club impacts the ball, including swing path, angle of attack, clubface angle etc. Initially, the average player may think this is information overload and way too much to think about to be useful. However it won't be when explained and you will quickly get the idea of the information and what you need to focus on. What you will get, is clear and measurable information about what you need to improve your ball striking by really understanding what is happening at impact and the resulting ball flight. Other ways Flighscope can help your game You can work out your club distancesFlightscope will give you carry and total distance of all your shots with every club, 52

The Centre Strike - The Purest Fundamental "Today's clubs are so forgiving you can hit it anywhere on the face and still get a result" A common statement, but unfortunately complete rubbish. So, let me give you a piece of advice: If you cannot consistently hit the centre of the face on your irons or the middle of the face on your woods, you will never reach your golfing potential. There are two causes of inconsistent striking - your clubs are incorrect for you or your technique needs some work. However, you cannot work on technique until you address equipment. This does not mean new equipment; it can just be a case of modifying what you have got. Over the years, I have read many golf books and I fail to give the author any credibility if there is no mention of centre strikes. I read a lot about swing plane but how can you preach about this if a basic fundamental like the lie angle is incorrect? If the iron was upright (toe off the floor) and the swing was good the ball would go left, unless the player made an adjustment or compensation during the swing. You cannot make a good swing with a poorly fitting golf club and expect to hit the ball consistently. I have also come to the conclusion that the word 'Standard' is the worst word in golf and over the years has probably wrecked more people's golf games than anything else. 54
The Heart of Golf in Essex. www.essexgolfer.com
There is no standard, there is no standard length, no standard lie, no standard weight, and no standard flex - do I need to go on? However, these are all aspects that effect striking the ball in the centre of the face. One of the first things we are taught when we start the game is how to align the head it is incredible how many Golfers I see who cannot do this due to their equipment. Your equipment should allow you to find the centre of the club, if it doesn't, then it's wrong. With regards to hitting the ball anywhere on the face think of it like this - for every dimple you miss the sweet spot by you are losing out on both ball speed and directional control - and for what, to be 'Standard'? English Schools Golf Championship 10th July Held at Woodhall Spa GC The English Schools golf championship took place at the testing Woodhall Spa course in Lincolnshire on Wednesday 10th July. The format of the competition was stapleford off of full handicaps. Southend High School for boys first man out was Jack Dyer (3). Jack started a bit nervously bogeying the first 2 holes but managed to get both of those shots back by the turn by birdieing the two par fives. As he stood on the 18th tee, he was 1 under par, but an errant tee shot unfortunately cost him a bogey at the last. However, a level par round and a score of 39pts gave Southend boys a wonderful start. George Lester(3) was the second player out; he unfortunately didn't get the chance to play a practice round as he only arrived back from his holiday on the Tuesday. George started well and was only two over at the turn, but tiredness kicked in on the back nine and he finished 8 over par and a score of 31pts. Toby Gibbons(4) was the last player out; like Jack, he started badly double bogeying three of the first 3 holes, but once again he fought on and was only 3 over by the turn. On the back nine, he continued to hit fairways and greens regularly and was only 4 over at the 17th tee. Unfortunately, he missed a three footer on the 17th for par and hit his second shot out of bounds on the last for a round of 79 and 33 pts. A score of 72 pts put Southend boys in 13th place only 5 pts off the lead. All three students played extremely well and thoroughly enjoyed the tournament and we look forward to trying to qualify in years to come. Report by Richard Casey
