The Warren Golf and Country Club is undergoing a major programme of investment and improvement. Recent work includes full bunker renovation for our front 9, drainage, tee reconstruction, forest management, roadway resurfacing, clubhouse improvements including kitchen refit, two refitted and extensively stocked Pro shops, the addition of Trackman III technology for coaching and custom fitting, new practice nets, new menus and wine list, and improved pool and spa facilities. This all in addition to our already superb golf courses and practice facilities. We have a further programme of major investment planned as we further transform The Warren Golf and Country Club and confirm our place as the Home of Golf in Essex. Our Open Weekend is your chance to see these exciting developments and meet the team behind it.

There could be quite a clash looming on the horizon. It will pit the U.S. tournament pros against the establishment. Namely, The R&A and The USGA who between them control and police The Rules of Golf worldwide. The argument concerns the use of belly putters. Although they have been around for many years, these two bodies are now considering banning them. It won't affect many amateurs because you rarely see them on general sale. However, lots of touring pros use them. In fact, some pros have never used anything else. To suddenly and arbitrarily take away an integral piece of equipment from a self-employed tradesman (for that is what a golf pro really is), is tantamount to taking away his living. And under what lawful jurisdiction can these governing bodies justify such action. This is the position of many U.S. pros, and it looks as though a court case could be the eventual outcome. Watch this space! Norman Head

ESSEX LADIES COUNTY GOLF ASSOCIATION TWO MAJOR EVENTS FOR 2013 Orsett Golf Club will host two prestigious events for the Essex Ladies County Golf Association during 2013, the Essex Ladies County Championship and the East Region Foursomes. The County Championship will be held over three days, Friday 24 May to Sunday 26 May. It is hoped that the challenging course at Orsett will attract a large number of entries. County Champion Charlotte Thompson, of Channels Golf Club, and Seniors County Champion Trish Wilson, of Chelmsford Golf Club, will defend the titles they won in 2012. The awards ceremony will take place at a celebratory tea on Sunday afternoon, when the Champions will be presented with their trophies. Amanda Colgate-Herbert, County Captain, will then announce the team who will represent Essex in the 2013 East Region County Week to be held at The Bedfordshire Golf Club on 24-28 June. Essex, who are currently English County Champions, will hope to progress to this year’s national finals at Wilmslow Golf Club, Cheshire in September.
Orsett GC Clubhouse has recently undergone a refurbishment. The clubhouse overlooks the 18th green, putting green, and practice chipping area.
The East Region Ladies 36 Hole Strokeplay Foursomes will be played at Orsett on Tuesday 16 April. The East Region comprises Bedfordshire, Cambs & Hunts, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk and Suffolk. Entries are limited to 40 pairs, and handicap limit is a maximum of 40 combined. Closing date 16 March. Entry forms are available from the ELCGA website at www.essexladiesgolf.org

Lee Porter, the PGA Professional attached to Hylands Golf Complex in Chelmsford, has been voted Clubmaker of the Year by the Golf Clubmakers Association in the UK. Lee now ranks in the top ten custom-fit clubmakers throughout Europe. No wonder he counts 8 touring golf pros as customers, including the ever popular local Pro, Robbie Coles.
Weapons Of Mass Destruction 2013 is definitely the year of adjustable technology with many companies offering more options than ever on the driver and more adjustability on both fairway woods and hybrids. Although these options are great, they are certainly not the answer to a golfer's prayers. In fact, I think adjustable clubs are actually one of the best but most misunderstood technologies available. If we were to roll back around 30 years, it would be commonplace for a golfer to visit a club maker and have a persimmon wood made to their specification. This would include loft, face angle and weight. From this, a wooden head would be formed to suit the golfer perfectly. Once finished, changes were possible but a lot of work. Golfer's even had the opportunity to choose the colour of their choice. Sound familiar? Well, that's because that's pretty much where we are currently - we can now adjust loft, face angle, weight and even choose the colour. Wow - we've gone back to the 70's! In all honesty, it's a good thing; having more options to suit the golfer should surely lead to better golf - right? In my opinion, the problem is around three inches tall and about two inches wide and answers to the name of 'The Key'. Changing a persimmon wood took time and skill to make any alterations, now it takes about a minute - and that's a problem because golfers are now constantly 'fiddling'. Having observed players on the driving range unwrapping their new weapons of mass destruction it seems evident to me that the most common first move is to crank all the loft off the club. But surely, if that's what was needed you would have bought a less lofted club? Problem is with taking the loft off the club you open the face - and for most people that's a 'Fore Right!'. So my best advice here is to think of the club as a wooden head, once it's set up correctly it stays there - if you're not sure how to set it up correctly go see a professional. Then ask a loved one to hide 'The Key' and go play golf. At least, this way if you bomb your golf ball into the trees you can be sure it was you and not a 'notch too far'. Talk to your local PGA Professional or contact me at Hylands Golf Complex on 01277 356016 email: porterlee@mac.com 10

One - Armed Drills One - armed drills require a decent amount of strength and good technique to perform correctly. The idea of doing them is that if you can perform a one - armed swing right, then hitting with two arms should be easy, and they are great drills to improve your technique. One - armed swings are easily performed poorly so it is very important that if you are going to do them; that you do so with a good technique otherwise you will get no benefit. Only use a 9 iron to start with, and make sure you hit off of a tee. Also, only hit 10 shots per session with each arm so that you don’t overdue it and put undue stress on your arm. At least until you have done the drill over numerous sessions. These drills are difficult and will challenge you so aim to get gradually better over time at them. You can start just by aiming to hit the ball 10 yards off the tee. Left arm and Right arm drills are correct for a right-handed golfer, if you play left handed this will be the other way around. Right arm only- Take your normal address and then take the back of your left hand and put it just below your right elbow. By putting it there you will be able to get the right elbow in the correct position, and it will encourage you to turn your shoulders properly. Aim to get your right arm into a throwing position just like you would when you would throw the ball a long way, with your shoulders turned as you would normally. The right arm should make an L shape and aim to mimic the above pictures. Make a number of practice swings doing this, firstly, and ensure that you can do this with the proper technique. Once you feel comfortable doing this then you can hit some shots. Left arm- Take your normal stance then put your right hand behind your back. For most people, this will be their weaker arm. Aim to turn your shoulders properly also to get your left thumb under the shaft and when you are at the top of your swing, your arm is extended as well. On the way through let your left arm fold. Again, aim to mimic the above pictures. Have fun with these drills and you may surprise yourself. Matt usually begins a lesson program with a Player Assessment where we look at a player’s strengths and weaknesses and recommend a plan of improvement. This lasts 60 minutes and looks at all parts of your game at a cost of £25. If you quote Essex Golfer, you can receive a £10 discount on this session, which is valid until the end of March.

Unfortunately, the weather continued to cause us problems during February but luckily we managed to hold two events. First of all - The Addington in Surrey. We played a superb course in warm sunshine couldn't believe it! Jason Levermore won, by one shot from Johnnie Fryatt, Mark Stokes and Paul Barham. The team event was won by Roger Gray and his Thorndon Park team of Ian Restall, Mark Downey and Peter Millett by 2 points from Paul Barham and his team. A very cold Rushmere on February 25th but we all survived it - the course, and in particular the greens, were superb. Jason Levermore continued his form with 38 points winning by one point from Johnnie Fryatt on 37 pts. Roger Gray was in third. In the team event Roger and his Thorndon Park team of Ray Fairs and John Bilverston won on count back from Johnnie Fryatt with another Thorndon Park team of the two Garland-Collins. Shaun Westfall from Belhus Park with Jason Horne and Daniel Everington were in third spot. The Essex Open Championship will be held at Chelmsford Golf Club on Thursday May 16th, 2013 and is to be sponsored by Burts Potato Chips. The Pro/Am will be held the day after on Friday May 17th. 16

Garon Park wins the GolfM Garon Park Golf Club in Essex has completed a remarkable revival by winning the prestigious title of GolfMark Club of the Year 2013, supported by COBRA-PUMA GOLF. It’s a triumph for coowner Alan Walker, who bought the club from the administrators in May 2010, and for his team. “We are absolutely chuffed, this is a wonderful achievement for a club which was in the doldrums three years ago,” said Alan, a past captain of the PGA and a PGA Master Professional. This England Golf award, which is now in its fifth year, recognises golf clubs that make an outstanding and innovative contribution to junior and beginner golf, showing a willingness to improve and develop. The award was announced at the England Golf Partnership’s County Golf Development Conference at Holywell Park Conference Centre at Loughborough University. The club works closely with Essex County Golf Partnership and is committed to growing the game and their business. The secret, says Alan, from left: Alan Walker, Ben Jones, Carol and Micky Pearson is: “Doing the basics and seeing them through. We are passionate about people, and we make them feel very, very welcome.” Presenting the award, Craig Verrinder, UK Marketing Manager for COBRA PUMA GOLF, said: “We are delighted to be able to recognise Garon Park for their outstanding efforts in providing a golf facility that truly supports the development of the game. “Golf is changing and the ability to offer venues that are inclusive and fun for golfers of all abilities is key to enhancing golf participation within the community. “COBRA PUMA GOLF are proud to continue supporting the GolfMark programme and helping golf grow across the UK.” Any affiliated golf club can apply to work through the GolfMark process and achieve the accreditation, by visiting www.golfmark.org There are currently 620 golf clubs with GolfMark and a further 545 working towards accreditation. Essex Golfer caught up with Alan Walker and had a chat. Congratulations on winning the GolfMark ‘Club of the Year 2013’ award – you must be very pleased? Yes, it was a fantastic achievement for us to win this award, and the staff and club members are extremely proud of our achievement. What does this mean for Garon Park? It means a lot, but it demonstrates our enthusiasm for promoting junior golf and also bringing new beginner golfers into the game. From a club perspective, it shows that our golf club has an allencompassing approach to all golfers – which is sometimes not found at every club you visit. It also shows our ability to bring new golfers into the game which are sadly lacking in the sport at the moment. 24
Mark club of the Year 2013 What type of junior programmes do you run and why have you been so successful? Our success is down to our Junior Organisers Micky and Carol Pearson and our PGA Pros, together with the help and guidance of the Essex Golf Partnership. Throughout the year, we run weekly coaching sessions for our juniors. During the summer month's juniors of all ages come to the club for coaching and then to play on our par three course. These evenings attract upwards of 40 juniors! During the winter months, they are split into ability ‘squads’ and have specific coaching from our Pro’s on the driving range. To bring new Juniors into golf, we run free of charge taster days for boys and girls and from there we introduce them to our weekly coaching sessions, and the juniors meet other juniors, and it mushrooms from there. You have been successful with beginner golfers as well. Last year, we coached 150 complete novices to golf using the very successful ‘Get into Golf’ programme. We had numerous starting dates and different times of the day so that everyone could be accommodated. These 4 week courses gave people a ‘taste’ for the game and after finishing the initial course over 90% enrolled on our own ‘Get further into Golf’ programme where we developed their skills so that they could move to our final programme called ‘Get into playing Golf’ where we actually take pupils onto the golf course and get them playing. The final course is the key because it actually gets beginners onto the golf course. From there they may wish to join the club, buy golf equipment, use the bar and restaurant. They do this because we have built up a relationship with them over the weeks. What are your goals for 2013 now that you have been nominated GolfMark ‘Club of the Year’? Our goals are to keep improving, keep expanding and keep very focused on the basics – and do them well. Our involvement with the Essex Golf Union and Essex Golf Partnership will hopefully increase as they see us taking the right steps forward and creating well coached Juniors and, importantly bringing many more new golfers into the game. So what’s the secret? Well, no real ‘secret’ just getting on with the numerous opportunities that are out there. Waiting for new golfers to come to your club is not going to happen – you have to go out and find them and create your own market. If these new golfers are catered for by you and your club in the very first instance, there is every chance, they will become customers for life – and that’s really is the secret! Congratulations to Alan and the team at Garon Park

Eliminating those 3 putts Unfortunately the talk in the 19th hole is more often or not based around the statement “I hit the ball really well today, if only I hadn’t had all those 3 putts I would have played well below my handicap!” Sound familiar?…… As a former Tour Player and now full time PGA coach I will aim to help you understand the bigger picture and how to improve in this area over the next few articles. Firstly do you analyse why you had the three putts? There could be a number of reasons, a few of which I have listed below • Lack of comprehension how to read the greens • Inconsistent aim of the putter • Lag putts left short of the hole, leaving putts between 6ft-10ft range • Approach shot to the green too far from the flag (incorrect club selection or a miss hit) • A high percentage of missed putts from 3 ft range Once your troublesome areas have been identified then you can design a specific plan to work upon and monitor your progress. The number of putts per round is useful information, but in my view requires some more in depth analysis taking the above areas into account. A single figure handicap player who hits 6/18 greens in regulation to par may finish with 27 putts, this would indicate their short game is in excellent shape at that given time. The area of weakness would therefore be their approach shots but this could well be affected by missed fairways from the tee. It is clear to see that a complete analysis is required to see the whole picture.
26
I personally prefer to count the number of feet of putts holed during 18 holes. The average length of putt holed per green can be worked out which makes interesting reading. Why not complete your self analysis in preparation for my next article. Copyright sarahbennettgolf 2013

Hever - A Sense of History The Hever Castle Estate which was the childhood home of Anne Boleyn reveals a rich and fascinating past, dating back to the 13th Century. But it was in the 1920s that Golf first featured with Lord Astor’s private 9 hole links course in the grounds. Golf featured highly in Astor’s entertaining, and he would often have guests playing, including Members of Parliament and it is thought Royalty. Today’s 27 Hole Championship course is set on the same land as Astor’s early links course and in 250 acres of truly beautiful countryside offers guests the chance to play golf on the stunning unspoilt Estate. Taking the name of the Famous founder of Golf at Hever, the newly refurbished Astor Lounge Bar and Restaurant, offers golfers and non-golfers a chance to experience a slice of history. Essex County News by Frank Tomlin, Press Officer, Essex County Golf Union
THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING. Our AGM was held at Upminster Golf Club on 7th February as planned. Representatives from our affiliated Clubs attended and stayed to dine with us afterwards. John Peters was duly elected as President for the next two years. Mike Hart was endorsed as “President Elect”. He will now be the County’s representative at England Golf. Our newly appointed County Captain, Alex Woodward of Orsett Golf Club was introduced. At the meal, our President thanked Brian Benton, Captain of Upminster Golf Club, and the Board of the Club, for their continuing hospitality as the host venue for the Essex Golf Union AGM. INTRODUCING JOHN PETERS, OUR NEW COUNTY PRESIDENT. As John Peters, begins his two year tour of duty, I thought that you might like to know a little more about him. John Peters joined Woodford Golf Club as a junior in 1972 and Wanstead Golf Club in 1976. He is still a member of both clubs. He achieved a Category 1 handicap as a player. He has served on the Essex Golf Union Executive Committee and latterly Board of Directors for 17 years carrying out various roles including Chairman of selectors, Chairman of the Championship Committee, County Team Match Secretary and qualified Rules Official. He has represented the County Union as its delegate at the English Golf Union, now England Golf, for the last six years.

as well as the Rules of Golf presentations, the Referees School, the Inter County Card Scheme and the Course Rating Program. He is ever mindful that we are here to serve Essex Club golfers across the entire range of handicaps and abilities. He can be assured of the full backing of the Board of Directors, as well at the staff at the County Office in Witham. INTRODUCING ALEX WOODWARD, OUR NEWLY APPOINTED COUNTY CAPTAIN. As a general rule the County Golf Union appoints a new County Captain once every two years. At the AGM, President John Peters announced that Alex Woodward has been appointed County Captain for the next two years and introduced him to the meeting. The role of County Captain is one of the highest honours the County Union is able to confer. As John Peters said, this appointment is thoroughly deserved by Alex, being a recognition of his playing ability, loyalty and leadership skills which we hope will enable the Essex Golf Union to build on the successes of our County teams at all levels going forward.. Alex has played for the County First Team and the Colts Team for a number of years. He has played in Orsett G.C. winning Thornton Cup teams. Last year he and his Orsett partner Mark Whiten won the Essex Foursomes. He has solid business experience and we are confident that his business skills coupled with his golfing skills will equip him to fill his new role with distinction.
He takes great satisfaction from working with young people who aspire to become elite golfers and ultimately professionals, following their progress knowing that the County Union has been a springboard for their success. He reminded those present at the AGM that the County Union provides a range of opportunities for affiliated Clubs and their members who are not elite golfers by way of the various inter club knock out competitions

NEW LAKE AT BRAI Major course investments have been made by Braintree Golf Club over the past 3 years, culminating in the installation of a new lake. It was needed to satisfy the Environmental Agency requirements for water storage to supply adequate irrigation for the golf course; the club is near to completion of a 1,650,000 gallon lake covering 0.75 acres. In positioning the lake, a number of options were considered. Finally it was decided to construct the lake to significantly enhance the course whilst also satisfying ecology and environmental issues. The construction impacts both the 6th and 7th holes, requiring the removal of 10,000 tons of soil to an adjacent site. Before filling, the excavation required lining with a membrane and Butyl liner. Numerous trees had to be moved to other strategic places on the course using a 16 Ton Tree Spade. The construction also necessitated new bunkers around the 6th and 7th greens, and new tees on both holes. Other associated projects that had to be undertaken were, drilling a new bore hole to 80 metres, construction of a new storage tank, installation of new pumps and irrigation system and extensive landscaping.
40
INTREE GOLF CLUB The lake project commenced in January 2012 with archaeological tests and planning approval being given in October 2012. Work commenced in early November 2012 and despite some appalling weather, the landscaping and final turfs were laid 8th February 2013. It is planned to have holes 6 and 7 back in play by the first week of March 2013. The main contractor for the excavation and landscaping of the lake was Martin Guy Developments they are also contracted for the golf course maintenance at Braintree GC www.martinguydevelopments.com. Other contractors included Ruskins trees & landscapes, Aquamation and Stockshill Drilling.
This latest project compliments what has been a major course improvement program over the past 3 years with a number of fairways being completely refurbished with improved irrigation. A significant number of bunkers have been restyled and reconstructed. All the greens have had extensive work carried out to make them playable 12 months of the year. The Directors of Braintree Golf Club believe that these projects have significantly enhanced the course for both members and visitors alike.

Connect With Your Core Part 2......Conditioning The Abdominals The Abdominals are split into 4 parts, the rectus Abdominals, the transverse Abdominals, the internal obliques and external obliques. The Abdominals have many functions in the body, protection of the organs; they provide movement and support to the trunk, assist the breathing process but most importantly, in relation to golf; the Abdominals provide postural support. They act as an in built corset to the body, supporting the spine and holding everything in place......hence being so very important to condition in any sport. The most common thing I hear when it comes to training the Abdominals is "how many crunches a day should I do?" I would not use crunches at all in a core/abdominal programme; crunches will predominately train the rectus Abdominals; these set of muscles are important but should not be targeted until the deeper muscles are strong and stable. All you will need is a Swiss ball and a blood pressure cuff to get the lower Abdominals and deep abdominal wall functioning. Firstly, I would teach how to breathe and use the abdominal wall, followed by contracting the transverse Abdominals correctly, then internal obliques then external obliques. Using exercises such as the horse stance, 4 point tummy vacuum, lower Abdominals series 1-4. Every golfer when starting a gym programme should start here, with a good quality core and postural programme. I have mentioned the book "the golf biomechanics manual" by paul chek, this really is a fantastic book to condition the Abdominals. Another book I love is "flatten your abs forever" by paul chek......never underestimate the diet and abdominal function. In part 3 I am going to discuss the importance of the back!! Back care you will all agree as golfers is VITAL!!

CROWLANDS HEATH - A MUDDY RELEASE Report by Norman Head Many Essex courses are built on clay. Nothing much you can do about it, but it does mean that water collects in the topsoil and stubbornly refuses to drain away. That's when it turns into mud. And for the last few months, it seems to have been ever present at many clubs. Looking for a change of scenery and a dry round of golf, I headed down the A12 to Crowlands Heath GC, which is situated between Dagenham and Rush Green. This nine hole course is laid out in a golf links style and home to a unique driving range where balls are hit into a boating lake. However more importantly for me, the Greens have been built to USGA specifications to ensure proper drainage. Furthermore, underneath the fairways, a conduit of connecting water pipes drained all the surface water and delivered it into a series of lakes and ponds around the course. Hey presto! I played there in the middle of February, and the fairways and greens were immaculate. No mud! It's an interesting and challenging course too. Well worth a visit; and considering the location, remarkably peaceful. West Hams training ground runs alongside the last hole so you may even get to see some football.
Jack picks up his new Callaway’s Arsenal and England mid-fielder Jack Wilshere visited the Callaway HQ's Performance Centre in London to get custom-fitted for the latest Callaway equipment. If he plays golf like he does football, I recommend not playing him for money.
Affiliated to the Essex County Golf Union, Crowlands Heath is a friendly club, noted for its fine teaching academy and work with junior golfers. Apart from inexpensive green fees, they also offer a yearly membership for just £99.00. It enables any golfer to acquire an official handicap, half price green fees and discount range balls. This is a great deal! For further details and to book tee off times call the club on 0208 984 7373 46
MALDON GOLF CLUB TO HOLD MIXED OPEN Maldon Golf Club have decided to hold an ever popular Mixed Open on Saturday June 22nd 2013. You will play one of the oldest and most attractive courses in Essex (9 holes 18 Tees) which is easy walking, yet requires accuracy if you are to score well. Situated between the Chelmer/Blackwater Navigation Canal and the tidal reaches of the River Chelmer sits a triangle of low-lying ground, some 50 acres of peace and tranquillity. Wildlife abounds, particularly birds, and there are views to charm the eye in all directions. The competition comprises three separate 9 hole formats with prizes for each, in addition to generous prizes for the best overall scores. There will be tea or coffee upon arrival, a brunch after the first 9 holes and Pimms after the second 9. Following the competition, there will be a 2 course dinner with coffee, when prizes will be awarded. The cost for this wonderful day is just £75 per pair. Closing date May 15th 2013. To enter visit www.maldon-golf.co.uk or call the Secretary on 01621 853212.

THE GARY PIKE GOLF ACADEMY Top teaching professional Gary Pike PGA.AP (advanced professional) invites you to his golf academy at Forrester Park Golf Club near Maldon. Gary has over 31 years of coaching experience and is a David Leadbetter trained instructor. He has published over 150 articles on the golf swing. Gary is coach to Walker Cup player Dale Whitnell and was the Essex County Senior Coach from 1998 to 2012 Contact the golf academy on 07801 428174 or visit www.garypikegolf.com
Why am I going to practice? Amazingly, I see many golfers practicing at the various ranges that I visit around the world; however I very rarely see constructive practice. This is where a player is trying a practice drill, or implementing a swing change. If the player is not trying to change, to improve or develop; the net result will be no change, therefore, no improvement. So in answer to my own question: I am going to practice making changes, to improve my technique to make myself a better player. As a coach, I would advise all efforts to make changes should be done with the guidance of a PGA Professional, orchestrating the changes required and showing you the best way to practice. Bearing in mind it will take several thousand repetitions to change the neurological pathways to make the change automatic. In my opinion, the golf swing has five areas where you should be working to improve, here is a blueprint to look at your swing objectively and see if improving any of these will help you improve.
48
Picture 1: The Pivot The pivot is responsible for your centeredness, stability and rotation during the swing.
Picture 2: The Plane The planes roll is to keep the club shaft in balance, assist the swing path and guarantee the automatic collision with the ball at impact.
1
2
3
Picture 3: The club face The club face is the biggest factor in the directional properties of the ball flight.
Picture 4: Balance Great balance allows you to turn and rotate in a fast athletic movement, which will assist you in creating power and consistent connection.
4
5
Picture 5: Lever Angle The lever angle between the left arm and the shaft creates angular catch up speed, one of the best power sources. This enables players like Ernie Els to appear to be moving so slowly yet create such huge power.
The next time you go to the range look at this list, try to make a change. Think to yourself, if I'm not changing I'm staying the same, and if I stay the same I'm not getting better.

John Peters’ Golfing Journey From caddy to the most prestigious post in county golf, that has been the remarkable journey of John Peters. Last month (Thursday Feb 7) at the annual meeting of the Essex Golf Union at Upminster GC in Havering, John Peters was elected unanimously as President of the Essex GU. He will serve a term of two years. It was more than 40 years ago that his interest in the game was sparked by his carrying the clubs of his family's next-door neighbour in Leytonstone around Hainault golf course in Redbridge. Soon this caddying business so inspired him that he became a junior member of Woodford Golf Club in 1972, he also signed up with Wanstead GC and has been a member there since 1976, managing to get his handicap down to five at one point. At the young age of 32, he was elected Woodford's club captain in 1986. An even greater honour was to follow. On the centenary of Woodford GC in 1990, five members' names were nominated for the captaincy. This was not a decision, as is usual, by the club's management committee but one by the whole membership, and they voted overwhelmingly for John Peters. And so began, as John acknowledges, the greatest golfing year of his life with a pro-am competition arranged and many other events to mark the centenary of the secondoldest club in the union; only Royal Epping, formed in 1888 is older. Over the years he, has seen many changes both to the course at Woodford and those who play it. When he first joined, there were posts with chains around the greens to keep off stray cattle. The members around in the 1970s were mainly businessmen; now the club caters for folk from all walks of life. Yet the Woodford course is still just as challenging, he said, and the greens magical. Golf has opened all sorts of unexpected doors for John Peters. Clearly now that he is the leader of affiliated golf clubs in Essex and north-east London, there will be even more surprises and challenges ahead.

www.bodysenseukltd.co.uk Food for Thought! You ARE what you eat…there is overwhelming research that what you consume, particularly for your golfing performance, will have a significant impact on HOW YOU PLAY. More importantly, all prolonged exercise (over 45-60 minutes) requires (1) carbohydrates and (2) water, to improve play. So what are the healthy options? Definitely, check out the Big Oven app for over 250,000 recipes of delicious, yet nutritious, combined carbohydrate / protein meal options and recipes. Low Fat Lifestyle.com should also inspire you with quick, easy sauces and dishes to clean up your act. For example, choose those slow release wholesome carbohydrates to stabilise blood sugar during and in the run up to practice and play. Your pancreas recognises white refined carbohydrates as SUGAR! As soon as you eat refined pasta, bread, biscuits, etc., your body produces a surge in insulin to adapt. Carbohydrate spikes are followed by a dramatic drop in both brain fuel and energy. This could dramatically affect your back 9! Use delicious, wholesome (wholegrain) slow release carbohydrates as breakfast options, porridge, wholemeal seeded breads, spelt bread, then brown rice and wholemeal cous-cous combined with steamed salmon or chicken wrapped with unsalted bacon for optimal lunchtime dishes,,,, delicious!!!!! Be prepared, stay sharp till the end. Amber Heath

No account is taken of the effect of weather and weather forecasting on our economy. The first 4 months of 2012 were the driest in 50 years, prompting a hosepipe ban in the South East. Financial forecasters, such as Neil Woodford (Invesco Perpetual), predicted a boom year for the economy "The equity market had its best start to a year since 1994." As it is now well known, the remaining 9 months of 2012 bought nearly double the average rainfall. This has bought the Golf Industry, for one, to its knees. Turnover at our previously thriving golf course is down due solely to the weather. I am quite sure that many others in Britain, being basically a nation of farmers (or shopkeepers!), would say the same for their business. Not one financial pundit or politician, observing the world from their cosy, dry, office, has seen the correlation between the weather and our current poor economic state. Even more marked is the effect of the weather forecasted, often erring on the negative side, affecting commercial activity the next day. If a rainy day is forecast, no matter how sunny, it turns out; our golf course will be quiet. Not one financial or political commentator, in the chest beating; following our downgrading from AAA status and predicted triple economic dip, has cited the worst rainfall in our history as a major factor. The weather affects all businesses-usually negatively. No one even wants to go out shopping if it’s pouring with rain, but no one will even plan to go shopping if the weather forecast is bad! Despite the figures, I think hardworking Britain has done pretty well against such overwhelming poor weather. My money is on a good summer and mini economic boom as a result. We cannot control the weather, but a few more optimistic comments in the evening weather forecast would help the next day’s business considerably!
