TEE OFF

Like many of you, I sat watching the US Open at Merion, transfixed. Who remembers the Open at Royal Birkdale in 1998 where a young amateur Justin Rose claimed fourth place? He turned Professional the next day. He then went on an infamous cruel run of missing 21 cuts in a row on the tour; still a record today. His problems were compounded by losing his beloved father Ken, who died from leukaemia in 2002. "When I was missing 21 cuts in a row, I mean I was just trying to not fade away, really," Rose said. "I just didn't want to be known as a one-hit wonder, a flash in the pan. I believed in myself inherently. Deep down I always knew that I had a talent to play the game. And I simply thought that, if I put talent and hard work together, surely it will work out in the end, in the long run”. Justin was proved right. It was a long slog, but proof hard work and dedication may not always give instant results; but to all of us watching him win the US Open 15 years after Royal Birkdale - we became believers. COLCHESTER

Having had one British major winner last month (how many of us thought Justin could have done a drive and 4 iron like that to the 18th!) can we see another at the British open this month? Obviously this event has the ‘Wimbledon effect’ where courses and shops see people out there trying their hand at this easy game!! or dusting off their old clubs and shoes to remember how they used to play. Four offers this month all in different categories, so something for clothing buyers, top end balls (the Z Star is Srixons Pro V1 equivalent so the offer is fantastic value), Electric trolley offer (let us also explain the merits of buying a lithium battery) and something to help you sharpen your short game with a Cleveland wedge offer. Best of luck to all the Brits in this years open and hopefully we’ll see you in our store soon. Phil

LWGS - Work Experience at Wentworth Through previous years of good performances the Lee Westwood Golf School students were again invited to take part in work experience at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. Before commencing their work the students attended the Pro-am where they met up with Lee and watched his round. Kindly Lee made time to interact with the students and provide a photo opportunity. The next day the work started. 26 students from both the Cheshire and Essex schools received the unique opportunity to be responsible for some of the carry boards and leader boards during the competition. Students with carry boards followed groups inside the ropes, getting a great view of first class golf and following some of the best golfers in the world including Rory McIlroy, Luke Donald and of course Lee Westwood. This gave them Chris Payne of Harwich Essex with an amazing opportunity to gain an insight into players approach to the Lee Westwood game of golf. The other students were in charge of the leader boards and the media tent where they could watch the tour pros practice on the green and range. “This was an ideal opportunity for our students to see the level of performance that they are aspiring to achieve and witness up close how good that their Tournament Professional idols are. We hope this experience will inspire them to work even harder to achieve their goals” – Simon Dainty, LWGS Essex coach. 8

Scade wins PGA East Anglian Championship James Scade, the 22-year old assistant at Little Channels GC, became PGA East Anglian champion at The Rayleigh Club. His two rounds of four under par 69 won him first prize of £2000 and put him three shots clear of joint runners-up Stuart Brown (Orton Meadows) and Crue Elliott (Sandy Lodge). It was the only Virgin Atlantic PGA East Region order of merit event in which Scade has taken part this year. He has been concentrating on the PGA Europro Tour in which he is 31st in their order of merit. Scade was one of the lucky ones who was safely back in the club house on the opening day when waterlogged greens caused such delays that 25 players were out early on the second morning to complete their first rounds. In his second round Scade was going well at nine under par for the tournament with five holes left to play. “My target was to finish 10 under but on the 14th I dropped two shots. My tee shot ended in a wet bunker about 130 yards from the pin with water to carry. I decided to give it a go but it fell short and the ball ended in the pond.” Otherwise Scade had an unblemished round with six birdies. His name goes on the trophy together with such famous players as Ian Poulter, Brian Huggett, Lionel Platts and Eddie Whitcombe. James Scade and The Rayleigh Club The final order of merit points were: Levermore 1262.5, Abbott 982.0, Hooper 954.5, Brown 842.5, Ellis 938, Quinn 801.

Captain Steve Kerley

The best second round scores of five under par came from Brown and Steve Cipa (South Essex Golf Centre) who is looking forward to a trip to Taiwan with the PGA European Seniors Tour from November 9 to 11. 10

Justin Rose,TaylorMade and Ashworth Staff Professional, wins US Open TaylorMade and Ashworth Golf staff professional Justin Rose pointed heavenward after tapping in for par on the 72nd hole at Merion on Sunday, a salute to his father after posting a one-over par 281 that earned him the U.S. Open Championship, his ďŹ rst Major title at the age of 32. Rose’s bag included an R1 driver, RocketBladez Stage 2 Tour 3-wood, a combination set of RocketBladez Tour and Tour Preferred MB irons and three ATV wedges. Rose also became the ďŹ rst player to win a Major championship with TaylorMade’s LETHAL ball. Down the stretch Rose hit two critical iron shots, his tee shot on the 229-yard par-three 17th, with a RocketBladez Tour 6-iron, and his 240yard approach on the long par-four 18th, with a RocketBladez 4-iron. Rose also used a 37-inch counterbalanced Spider Blade putter featuring a short-slant hosel, which helped him master the fast and tricky greens at Merion. Rose, who wears Ashworth Golf apparel, also wore one-of-a-kind Ashworth Golf Cardiff footwear featuring his initials (JR) and his children’s names (Leo and Lottie) on the heel patch, in celebration of Father’s Day. Stan Wins at North Weald The Disabled Golf Association held their inaugural event in Essex of the 2013 season at North Weald Golf Club on Thursday 6th June 2013. The fast running, perfect conditions led to some good scores, 3rd was Paul Houghton (knee amputee from Essex) with 33 points, 2nd was Mark Walters (knee amputee from Kent) with 36 points, and the winner was Stan Bembenek (hind quarter/full leg amputee from Berkshire) with 39 points. North Weald GC is a true gem, a really beautiful course in great condition and clearly a disabled friendly club - all the staff and members we met out on the course being extremely helpful and supportive - we will definitely look to go back again. Graeme Robertson, National Events CoOrdinator said “We had a really great day at North Weald, the golf was excellent. I know first hand what a difference playing golf has made to my life, (I have MS) the therapeutic benefits are incredible, and our aim is to enable more disabled people to return/play golf and it is good to see familiar faces, but also welcome new members.” DGA is a pan-disability, not-for-profit organization, membership is free and event costs are kept low so they are always looking for sponsorship for events. They hope to welcome both our regular and new members again before too long at upcoming events. We are hoping to encourage more disabled people from Essex and the North London area to play golf and meet new friends, it’s free to join. More information is at www.disabledgolfassociation.co.uk with events coming all over the country.

Lever System the quickest way to create power

How does it work?

I say that the lever system is the quickest way to create power, because the alternative is to spend many long hours in the Gym building muscle and increasing the speed of movement unless you have naturally fast twitch muscles.

It works quite simply, as we swing to the top of the swing Pic 2 the approximate straight line at address has now turned into an angle where the wrists have been allowed to hinge. The actual angle at the top of the swing is not critical; you can look at many players and find a different one. – However, what is critical is that the angle that is set at the top is increased in the change of direction. Pic 3 This applies loading to the shaft and will aid the delay in the

Failing those things, just understanding then improving your lever system will add three very important fundamentals to your swing, improving your clubhead speed - delofting the clubface at impact, making it stronger at impact and creating shaft lean; which increases the stability of the clubface on offcentre swings. What is the lever system? The left arm we will call the top lever, the shaft of the golf club, the bottom lever and the wrists the free wheeling hinge. Pic 1 16

clubhead catch up, and it is the clubhead catch up where the speed is increased. Pic 4 is my delivery point, notice that the club shaft (bottom lever) is still lagging behind the top lever (left arm); over the next few moments in the swing, the top lever is going to go past the Picture 4. impact point and the bottom lever is going to be pulled out straighter and almost catch up at impact Pic 5; magnifying the clubhead speed. I say almost catching up, as Picture 5. the slight lag behind between the top and bottom levers creates the shaft lean, keeping it a pulled force rather than the more unstable pushed, this keeps some of the loft off the clubface giving more penetration in flight and as already stated more speed.

LOCAL RULES STUMP ELLIS Local rules scuppered Rob Ellis's narrow victory in the Captain's Prize at Woodford Golf Club last month (June 8). First he fell foul of the main local rule: no show, no prize. Then to add insult to injury, Rob also lost out on the nearest the pin prize because under another Woodford local rule which applies just at this event, no competitor can win more than one prize. So it was a costly decision for Rob to miss the prize-giving and evening entertainment. He had won the Prize with 39 stableford points, but the winner's reward of £70-worth of club-badged clothing instead went to the runner-up, 11-handicap Aiden Steed, who has been doing sterling voluntary work on the course. Aiden scored 38 points. It was a double whammy for Harlow-based Ellis as his drive on the 173-yard ninth "over the pond" hole finished closest to the pin, but he forfeited this. Indeed there was another slap in the face for Ellis, an area representative for a machinery firm, as his handicap was cut by a stroke to 13. His one consolation is that his name will go up in gold lettering on an honours board at the Sunset Avenue club. He had warned officials at the club that he would not be at the prize-giving as he had to attend a charity event organised by a relative at Leyton Orient football club that evening.

Hooper holds his nerve Mark Hooper of Rayleigh Golf Range won the Weston Homes PLC/Bishop’s Stortford Classic for the second time in three years. He made light of a long-term back injury to produce a three under par second round of 68 to win by two clear shots from Jason Levermore of Channels Golf Club. Yet it was a tighter finish than the score suggests. Hooper, five under at the turn, was then three shots clear of his nearest rivals. He dropped shots at the 11th and 16th to leave the door ajar. Levermore was only level par for the tournament after 11 holes. He eagled the par five 12th and birdied the 14th to put himself level with Hooper who was in the group in front. Hooper held his nerve. He sunk a crucial long par putt on the 17th and secured his par at the testing final hole to end three under. Levermore, who also sunk a 15-foot Mark Hooper receives his trophy from par putt on the 17th after finding a bunker just short of Michael Alden the green, was still joint leader standing on the last tee. A play-off looked likely but Levermore was wayward off the tee and ended with a double. James Scade of Little Channels started the day in second place at two under but he four-putted the seventh and three-putted the eighth to see his chance slip away.. The event was covered by Sky Television cameras and the trophy was presented to Hooper by Michael Alden, group director of sponsors Weston Homes plc. 19

Lee Porter, the PGA Professional attached to Hylands Golf Complex in Chelmsford, has been voted Clubmaker of the Year by the Golf Clubmakers Association in the UK. Lee now ranks in the top ten custom-fit clubmakers throughout Europe. No wonder he counts 8 touring golf pros as customers, including the ever popular local Pro, Robbie Coles.

This month I thought I would answer a few of the questions I received from the last edition. If i play golf three times a week how often should i change my clubs (if ever)? It depends on how comfortable you are with your current equipment. If everything is going well, then whether you play three times a week or once a month, there is no need to change. Only change equipment after you have tested it and found it to perform superior to your own, never change for the sake of it. Should all ladies play with ladies clubs? No. Ladies clubs are generally very light with flexible shafts, a lady, who has a faster swing would benefit by playing with a heavier and firmer shaft. What is the difference between an A Wedge and a Gap Wedge? In essence, these clubs are the same. They both fit between the Pitching Wedge (around 45°) and the Sand Wedge (around 56°). Depending on the player, a Gap or an A Wedge would have between 50° to 52° of loft. Is it OK to cut down my old set of clubs for my son who is 8 years old? In my opinion, No - junior clubs need to be light with shafts that promote getting the ball into the air. Cut down adult clubs are heavy and actually can effect technique in a big way - for example if the club is too heavy for the youngster at the top of the backswing they will not be able to support the club and ‘overswing’. 20

The Heart of Golf in Essex. www.essexgolfer.com

Do clubs wear out over time? I think that there would be either visible or audible signs if the club was coming to the end of its life. Cracks and rattles on the head or wear on the shaft are the things to look out for - if it’s just a case of the driver not going so far it's probably a case of user error! I hit my driver very high, should I use less loft? Very few amateur golfers hit their driver to high through playing too high a loft. Driver height is obviously hugely dependent on how the club is presented to the ball; changing from a 10.5° to a 9.5° won’t make hardly any difference. I would suggest taking a look at your technique first - launch monitors are perfect for this. As always, if you have any questions feel free to contact me on 01277 356016 or through my website - www.leeportergolfsolutions.com Talk to your local PGA Professional or contact me at Hylands Golf Complex on 01277 356016 email: porterlee@mac.com

Burnham on Crouch Golf Club course Record was smashed this week when 19 year old Tom Howard played in the midweek Stableford competition and shot an eight under par 62. Seven birdies, an Eagle and one dropped shot saw the previous course record of 65 fall. Tom said ” I had a great round where everything seemed to fall into place”. One of the clubs PGA Professional Ken Light said “Tom has been striking the ball great for a while now and this was on the cards. An amazing achievement and I am sure Tom appreciated playing on a course and greens in particular, of such quality as produced by our greens staff this year.” The club has recently invested in a new greens iron and the improvements have been remarkable. Membership numbers continue to grow as the clubs reputation for internal investment grows.

Close, but No Big Car for Jason as life settles down at Channels GC The new head golf professional at Channels Golf Club has been in the job since early April, but it’s only now that he can finally take stock of his surroundings after one of the busiest periods of his life and find time to think enviously of a £100,000 car that ‘might have been’. Jason Levermore, 33, joined the club at Little Waltham, Chelmsford, after spending the first 12 years of his career playing on the regional and national PGA tours and the EuroPro and Challenge tours. But just as he’d settled to his new role as a club professional he had the biggest moment of his professional playing career recently, when he scored a hole-in-one on the second hole at the prestigious BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, won ultimately, in memorable fashion, by the young Italian Matteo Manassero. What’s more, the European Tour announced he’d won a £100,000 BMW M6 Gran Coupe, put up by the sponsor as a reward for a hole-in-one. But all was not as it seemed … He explained: “It was a great start, holing out on the second, and I was informed I’d won the £100,000 BMW. Apparently the European Tour put it out as a story and it was picked up by quite a few places – my friends told me it was plastered all over. But when we came off the course at 17, because of lightning, we were told that they had made a mistake and that the car wasn’t on offer at the second hole after all, only on the 14th. “It was a bit of a disappointment but nobody can ever take away from me the fact I holed-in-one in the PGA Championship at Wentworth. That’s something I’ll have forever.” Ultimately, Levermore finished 66th, with a five-over-par total of 293. After such a dramatic start on the opening day it would be understandable if the Clacton-born pro was disappointed, but he was sanguine about the whole affair. “The last nine holes on Sunday were a bit painful to be honest. I think I was getting a bit tired and it started getting to me. I ended up throwing a few shots away. But if somebody had said to me at the beginning of the week that I would play all four days – when people like Rory McIlroy, Luke Donald and Graeme McDowell failed to make the cut – score a hole-in-one on only the second hole and finish 66th, I would have bitten their hand off.” After 12 years playing full-time on the minor tours, Levermore had decided to ‘settle down’ with a club professional job at Channels and started officially in early April. But he’s had little time to 30

settle in and get to know his surroundings. “It’s been a really busy time,” he smiled. “We spent five weeks refitting the pro shop – painting and decorating, and giving it a complete overhaul”. “Then I ran the London Marathon for the first time with a couple of friends. I made it round in 4hr40min. I didn’t really set myself any target other than to get round and enjoy the experience. We were raising money for the 999 Club and The Lady Florence Trust – a charity which provides support to the most isolated and lonely people in society. Next year I hope to do the London to Brighton bike ride. “And a month ago my first son, Raife, was born. Fortunately he’s been really good so far, waking only about twice a night – but I’m told that doesn’t last,” he laughed”. “But I’m really enjoying the new role and now I’ve got that busy period out of the way I want to kick on and immerse myself in the club, its events and its members. I really like the club – my wife and I were married here two years ago so were very familiar with the set-up. It’s a lovely club, run by a really nice family who are only too happy to let me get on with what I have to do providing I’m doing it properly”. “I want to continue playing whenever I can but I’m really looking forward to coaching the members and getting to know them – and I’m also keen to get the juniors more involved here.” Chances are that members young and old will be only too delighted to be coached by a man who has just scored a hole-in-one at the BMW PGA Championship – just don’t ruin the moment by asking him to show you his new car! I am delighted to announce that my long awaited swing analysis software has arrived and it is the perfect addition to a putting lesson which I also use for the full swing. I would just like to explain how it works!! The two photos below show a before and after backswing of a putting lesson with a visual and numerical readout. (for me to analyse!) I have not included photos of the impact and follow through. Fig 1: Backswing before lesson ( Putt 287) The data readings of Fig.1 shows the putter head, prior to any instruction, has been taken very much above (outside) the black ball to target line. This player has problems with distance control on long putts which is primarily caused due to the putter face returning to the ball in an open position promoting a “cutting” action, striking the ball with a glancing blow. The data for Putt 287 shows that the clubface is open 6 degrees and the path of the putter is out to in (cutting across the ball).

Fig.1

I gave the player two drills to work on, after a short period of time I recorded the swing again as in Figure 2 Fig 2: Backswing after putting lesson (Putt 289) It is clear to see the putter head in Figure 2 is closer to the black ball to target line during the backswing, illustrating a straight shot as shown in the data reading on the next page. The readings of putt number 289 shows the putter face is square in comparison to putt number 287 prior to the lesson, which demonstrates a marked improvement.

There are a number of Tour Professionals who have putted successfully with an out to in stroke, but I believe this piece of equipment helps the player to visualise the stroke and make necessary alterations identifying changes immediately. It is important to remember that a large amount of putting is “feel” and not to take the figures literally but it is up to me to find the balance that gives you a solid and consistent strike. Mrs D “I can’t wait to use this again during my next lesson, the 3 D is excellent” If you would like to find out more or to book an hour putting session utilising the equipment please contact me M: 07719 617349 E: sarahbennettgolf@gmail.com W:sarahbennettgolf.co.uk My next series of Ladies group lessons has been launched so please e mail me for further information as places will be limited on a fist come first serve basis.

SOUTH EAST SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIPS 27TH MAY Held at BUCKINGHAM GOLF CLUB The practice round was a rare event this year as it was played in blazing sunshine; however, the dawning of the match day was grey and cloudy and the students had to endure 36 holes in pouring rain. Fortunately, the course held up even if the players didn’t. All credit to them, not one of the 80 players NR’ed! After round one Essex, were looking strong with Elliott Fullalove Braintree in the lead by two shots having finished 2 over on a short but tricky course. Ryan Cox Warley Park and Jack Dyer Rochford Hundred both posted 5 over and were in the top five. Ashleigh Greenham West Essex had a forgetable first hole with an 8, but she managed to put it behind her and pulled back to finish with 79.

Boys Team with left to right - Capt of Buckingham GC, Ryan Cox, James Mower, Elliott Fullalove, Jack Dyer

In the second round, Elliott continued in his steady game and finished with a 70, one under, leading in the club Georgina Blackman and Paige Kemp house. Unfortunately, as Essex began to celebrate his victory, he was pipped at the post by a 2 under from Chris Hills of Norfolk and he had to settle for runner-up losing on countback! Likewise, Ashleigh 38

finished very strongly with a 1 under finishing as runner-up! The good news was with Elliott, Ryan, Jack and James Mower; Essex managed to bring home the team trophy for the first time since 2007! The girls unfortunately found the rain a little too much and only finished 3rd. Thanks to Georgina Blackman and Paige Kemp together with Ashleigh for their Stirling efforts. Elliott, Jack, Ryan and Ashleigh progressed to the National Finals at Hollinwell Golf Club.

NATIONAL SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIPS ON 24TH JUNE Held at HOLLINWELL GOLF CLUB, NOTTS. The players were treated to a fine day for their 36 holes on what was to prove a testing and difficult track. Placement and keeping out of the rough was key to a good round at this most prestigious course. Eliott Fullalove played well on the 1st round being 2 over par. Jack was not happy with his scoring but still was only 6 over and well placed. The second round proved to be a test of endurance and fitness. None of the players finding it easy; Elliott managed a creditable 77 finishing in 14th overall and Jack and Ryan dropped down the leader board. Ashliegh had disappointing scores to end in seventh place. All was not as bad as it seemed as both Ashleigh and Elliott have secured an England Cap by being selected to play against Wales in August at Lytham. Congratulations to both of them. Results can be found on Elliott Fullalove www.englishschoolsgolf.co.uk. Report by June Morgan 39

CHAMPIONS, OLD and NEW. During the month of June, three of our Championship events were played. • The Essex Amateur Championship, our “Major” tournament, was won by Bobby Keeble for the second year running. He was a worthy winner after 72 holes of highly competitive golf on a challenging course. This competition is as old as the Essex Golf Union itself and was first played in 1924. A full report follows. • The Essex Seniors Championship (The Chelmsford Challenge Trophy) was played at Chelmsford on 13th and 14th June and won by Peter Cumberworth of Chelmsford Golf Club. Runner up was Ian Southgate of Southend. This 36 hole scratch strokeplay event was introduced into the fixture list 25 years ago. • The County Mixed Championship was played for the very first time on Saturday 22nd June. It proved to be a happy occasion. Colne Valley Golf Club pulled out all the stops to ensure that this brand new event was launched in fine style. The James and Lynn Anderson weather, which had looked a bit iffy before play began, stayed mainly dry and the sun showed its face. The pairs who took part had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon’s golf. James and Lynn Anderson of Colne Valley were the winners with a better ball score of 41 stableford points, edging out Peter Fitzgerald and Leah Plester of Theydon Bois on countback. There were 10 other players within 5 points of the winning score. This event is a welcome addition to our calendar and we hope it attracts a large entry in future years. Our thanks to Colne Valley whose original idea it was.

THE ESSEX JUNIOR GOLF TOUR AND UNDER 14 ORDER OF MERIT. This new initiative is already going strong as the report from our County Junior Organiser, Keith Mitchell attests. The third of the six tour events was played at North Weald GC. on 29th May. Of the 51 players who entered, 17 returned scores below their handicap. The Best of these was Jake Wells who racked up 46 stableford points to win the event. At the half way stage in the Order of Merit, Alex English leads the combined field in the scratch category while Joseph Defries leads the handicap category. For the Under 13’s Michael Gilbert leads scratch category and Joseph Defries the handicap category. For the Girls, Lily May Humphries leads both the scratch and handicap categories. It is very pleasing indeed to see the enthusiasm of all the young players who take part and the commitment and support of their parents. ON A WIDER STAGE. The Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters Tournament was played at Nizels Golf Club in Kent on 21st – 23rd June. This 72 hole Under 18 tournament is an England Junior Order of Merit competition with world ranking points. Five of our Essex boys entered. Louis Lazarus of Romford was our highest finisher in 14th place which was pretty good in an international field of 124 players. A WELCOME WIN. Our County Team beat Middlesex by 7½ to 4½ in an England Golf South-East Men’s League (North) match at Stoke by Nayland on 26th May. Full details are shown in the report by our County Team Manager Bob Paton. We look forward to more of the same as the season progresses. The 80th ESSEX AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP. Hearty congratulations to Bobby Keeble of Crowlands Heath who successfully defended his title with a 72 hole gross score of 301. Bobby’s final round of 71 (three under Standard Scratch) was the lowest recorded by anyone during the two days of competition. Mitchel Sarling of Rochford Hundred was runner up on 304 with James Allen of Chelmsford third on 306.

At the end of the first day, Charlie Campbell-Day of West Essex was in the lead with a 36 hole gross score of 151. Jordan Wallace of Abridge was in second place on 153. Bobby Keeble was in 7th place with Mitchel Sarling 8th and James Allen 10th. This, our premier competition, was played at The Essex Golf Club, Earls Colne, on 8th and 9th June. The course was in excellent condition and set up to be a stiff but fair test of the best golfers in Essex. The weather was dry but chilly. It was not easy to score in the prevailing conditions and it was pleasing if unsurprising that members of the England squad and our county squads mastered them well enough to finish at or near the top of the leader board. This year, West Essex represented by Charlie Campbell-Day and Jonathan Christie were the winners with a gross 312. Chelmsford, represented by James Allen and Jack Smith, were the runners up. This Trophy was first presented by J.J.Esplen OBE, who was the first President of the County Golf Union when it was founded in 1924. He was Captain of Wanstead at the time. He won the Amateur Championship in 1927. Frank Tomlin ESSEX SENIORS CHAMPIONSIP (For the Chelmsford Challenge Cup) Chelmsford Golf Club – 13-14 June 2013 78 players contested The Chelmsford Challenge Trophy, which was donated to the Essex Golf Union in 1999 and is presented to the winner of the Essex Seniors Championship. The event which is held at Chelmsford Golf Club annually, is a 36 hole stroke play event which is played over 2 days. The course was in fantastic condition and the greens were lightning fast after being ironed before play. The weather for the first days play was windy and cloudy and the competitors found the conditions difficult. Peter Cumberworth from Chelmsford Golf Club

difference as ball placement is vital to making good scores on fairly narrow but sloping fairways that West Hove features in plenty. The Essex team approached the game with confidence and a very positive attitude. Having been narrowly beaten by Surrey earlier in the year, and knowing that Surrey had scored 35 out of 40 in their previous match, they knew that Surrey held all the cards to be able to win the league. But all the boys felt that they could beat both sets of opponents in this important fixture. Sussex were an unknown factor, but, as hosts, who used the course as one of their practice “homes”, they could have spoilt the Essex plans. Ben Rendell, the Essex captain set the tone with a double win as lead off man, beating both his opponents by significant margins. All the other Essex players gained points with Liam Francis also scoring maximum points lower down the field. The final scores were Surrey 26 points, Essex 23 points and Sussex 11 points. Surrey having gained a total of 90 points so far in the league are unbeatable so Second place is the best Essex can hope for when they go to Garon Park in August. They will need to beat both Kent and Sussex convincingly to make a clear statement of intent for the future. West Hove were terrific hosts who provided a great course and some super hospitality. The County side got their season back on track with a fine win over a good Middlesex side at Stoke by Nayland golf club, the County fielded the youngest side that they have sent out for some time and it paid dividends for them with a good 1 point lead after the morning foursomes. In the singles the County asserted themselves with our County captain Alex Woodward leading the way with a 7&6 win in the first game, that was soon followed by Bobby Keeble 4&3, and the youngest member of the side Mitchell Sarling continuing his fine start to his County career with a 3&2 win to give Essex a flying start to the afternoon matches, another gritty 2&1 win for Mason Papple, and good fighting halves from Mark Stones and Matt Baker gave Essex the result which they badly wanted. Bob Paton County Team Manager England Golf - South East Group Junior Qualifier At Studley Wood Golf Club on the 30th May 2013 On an extremely wet day at the end of May the Essex Under 18 squad set off for Studley Wood Golf Club in Oxfordshire for one of their most important tournaments of the year, the EGU South East Group Junior Qualifier. Eleven counties take part with 6 players from each county playing 36 hole medal play, with the best five scores from both the morning and afternoon counting. The county with the lowest combined score goes forward to represent the South East in the national finals. After two days of torrential rain the condition of Studley Wood Golf Club on the day of the competition was remarkably good and Essex started brightly in the morning with our five scoring players being, Scott Hudson (Braintree) 1 under, Sam O’Brien (Stoke by Nayland) 1 over, Louis Lazarus (Romford) 1 over, Bobby Keeble (Crowlands Heath) 3 over and Mitchell Sarling (Rochford) 4 over giving us a total of 8 over and second place behind BB&O who were level Par. The afternoon again started well with Mitchell Sarling coming in first with 1 under and with our other counting scores of, Scott Hudson 1 over, Dan Garner (Romford) 1 over, Louis Lazarus 4 over and Sam O’Brien 7 over giving us an afternoon score of 12 over and a final total of 20 over for the ten rounds. Although a very creditable score this was over taken

by Hampshire who had two players who recorded 5 under in the afternoon which took them away from the field and left Essex in third place. This was a very young squad with 3 players only 15 year olds, 2 players 16 year olds and only 3 players who will not be eligible for next year in the squad, so much experience was gained for the future. Steve Morrison Essex Under 18 Manager. Essex Junior Golf Tour Wednesday 29th May 2013 Venue - North Weald Golf Club The parents of the youngsters that take part in these events find the choice of dates for these events almost amusing – but not quite! One day I will choose a day when it is not raining, or snowing, or blowing a gale and the sun will take it as a favour to show itself. Once again the weather was, to say the least, poor, but at least it did not pour down on us as it has in the past and despite a constant fine misty rain some great golf was played on a course with receptive greens and in great condition. Star of the day was Jake Wells who teed off first and recorded a score of 46 points and in doing so won both the Under 13 section and the combined competition. He did not score less than three points on any hole and will receive a significant handicap reduction as a reward for his very successful day. Out of a field of 51 there were 17 who managed to score under their handicap in these near perfect conditions for good golf. The boys and girls have been frustrated over the past year with courses either too wet or suddenly dry and difficult to stop a ball on the green. Recent growth has meant fringes and short rough have been difficult to chip out of but conditions at North Weald on the day gave many the opportunity to reduce their handicaps and they took it. Alex English had a score of 30 Scratch points to maintain his challenge for first place in the Order of Merit with Harry Noakes scoring 29 points and the ever reliable Ben Rendell carding 28 The Girls section was won again by Lily May Humpreys (37 pts) whilst Joseph Blackmur, scoring 43 points, won the Net section for the Under 14. 46

Joseph also won the nearest the pin prize on the 8th hole for those with handicaps over 12. Max Maynard won the nearest the pin prize on the 17th hole for those 12 and under. Edward Brown must have wondered what he has to do to win because he carded 45 points in the Under 13 section only to be beaten by Young Jake Wells. It was a very memorable day for Callum Hensby whose tee shot on the 17th went in the hole! Unfortunately his handicap is 13 so he was just outside the section to win nearest the pin, but following the match he was presented a dozen Essex Crested golf balls and a certificate to mark this achievement by Essex Golf Union. Tom Baker won the putting prize with Patrick Arundel taking a prize for the Over 12 handicap section. Once again we had a great day and our thanks must go to our sponsor the NORMAN GARON TRUST whose support makes it possible to run these events. Our grateful thanks to the North Weald Golf Club and its members whose patience and encouragement go a long way in making the day a success. In particular I have a small group of parents whose willingness to help out in so many ways is very much appreciated. Keith Mitchell

By Lance Geringer B.A, Sports Kinesiologist & Nutrition Specialist - developer of the Golf Performance Bar www.lancegeringer.com; info@lancegeringer.com

Eat properly and save shots now! I consistently hear the following from golfers: “I started off fine, but on the Back9 I felt a bit tired and dropped a few shots!” or “I didn’t feel my best and made some bad decisions, which cost me a couple of shots.” I’m sure everyone at one time or another can relate to these statements. ‘Back 9 fatigue’ is caused by a lack of energy to the working muscles and brain - a major reason for dropped shots! By eating properly you can fuel your body and save those dropped shots! Research has shown that over 18 holes golfers will burn between 1200-1600 calories, from walking an average of 5 miles, swinging their clubs 200+ times, all the while pushing a cart or carrying their clubs. All this activity requires a continuous supply of energy to your muscles and brain. Since golf has its own unique energy requirements, golfers need an energy bar that not only has enough calories for the amount of activity required on the course, but one that also releases its energy slowly. Unfortunately, the majority of protein/energy bars out there have been developed for the fitness/gym markets. I would never recommend that a golfer use a product made for the gym, and likewise someone working out in a gym should not use a bar made for golfers.

Because there was a lot of confusion about on-course golf nutrition, I developed the Golf Performance Bar to take all the guess work out of what/when you should eat to avoid Back 9 fatigue. Everything in the bar - from the total calories to the carbohydrates used has been calculated to give you the best performance possible. The bar allows golfers to have the same energy on the Back 9 as they have on the Front 9! See for yourself the difference it makes! I’m confident that once you’ve tried the bar it will be part of your game. In future articles, I will show you how to increase your drives, get ‘fit for golf’ and how you can use golf to burn body fat!

Working with Simon Khan It has been a year since I started working with Simon Khan on his putting and at that time, he was 444th in the ofďŹ cial World Rankings. After the US Open, he has now risen to 140th; his highest position for well over 2 years! What has helped Simon? Well, a number of things! The ďŹ rst, getting him to play games on the putting green. This is very important, as drills get the stroke improved but not necessarily competitive. A great game is Par-Birdie. Place 4 positions around the hole starting from 3ft. 1st putt is for par and 2nd for birdie and continue par then birdie. If a par putt is holed, you make par but if missed you make bogey. If you hole the birdie that is -1 and missed is a par. Continue until you either get to -5 or +5. Continue to 4ft if -5, but the game is over at +5. Since the start of the year, we have got Simon to change his putter. Using my zenio system a mobile analyser with lots of information to determine how the stroke is working, it showed that his previous putter a slight hang putter like a Ping Anser was creating instability at impact. He now uses a Taylor Made centre shaft, which has helped stability through impact. Next time, I will discuss other factors on why he has improved.

If you want to improve your putting either email wozthepro@gmail.com call or text on 07888828760 or Twitter @wsargentgolf Warren Sargent Class AA, Level 3 Coach based at Epping GC and teaching at The Essex G&CC. 50

Balance??!

!

When putting together a series of programmes the first thing I think about is balance. Balance in the golf swing and maintaining it is essential. Generally, if you asked people "how is your balance?" They would not really know. A good way to test your balance/proprioception would be to try things like standing on 1leg (try both legs!!), sitting on a Swiss ball in good posture and try lifting 1 leg from the floor and more advanced testing would be to try these things but with your eyes closed!!

!

Balance is so important in the golf swing, not only will it allow you to hit the ball further but it will also allow it to go straighter. A famous quote sums this up very well....... "You cannot fire a cannon from a canoe".!

!

Ways to improve your balance.........above I spoke about standing on 1 leg to test your balance, this can also be an exercise. Try standing on 1 leg for as long as you can but always try both legs, not just your strong one!!! If you are in a gym environment I like exercises such as "1 arm cable pull" but single legged and my favourite exercise to improve balance and proprioception is balance work on the Swiss ball, starting on all 4's in a 4 point balance and progressing on to advanced levels such as standing on the ball!!! Once you can balance on the ball on just your knees you can begin to practice the golf swing on top of the ball, without a golf club and then with one!!!

!

Another great way to improve balance is to try some exercises on the Bosu. You can try squats, 1 legged squats (or just standing 1 legged on the Bosu is pretty tough!!) and you can also practice your golf swing on top of the Bosu.

www.bodysenseukltd.co.uk I can't see the ball! Watery eyes, itchy eyes, a stuffy nose and even occasional nosebleeds could all be a sign that you have, or are starting to suffer with, hayfever. The condition itself is characterised with symptoms which impinge sporting, and particularly golfing, performance. Allergic rhinitis can affect the eyes, nose and even ears. Tree pollens (spring), grass pollens (summer) and weed and shrub pollens (summer/autumn) can all cause you to reach for your hanky. Allergic rhinitis is no fun and could leave you fuzzy headed when you should be optimising your swing. Pollen forecasts for trees, grass and shrub pollens can vary vastly from day to day and classic anti- histamines could leave you feeling groggy or drowsy pre-match. Why not try Quercetin-Plus (Biocare 0121 433 3727), pre-hayfever season as a natural anti-histamine. Alternatively, Pollinosan Hayfever Tablets by A Vogel are very effective. Personally, I contacted Tanya Artus, Homeopath and Nutritionist (07932) 535829, who sent me a desensitisation remedy for both grass pollens and rape seed. Runny itchy eyes are now a thing of the past, AMAzING!

Pitching- The Key to making more Birdies Pitching is much the same as chipping, but the basic difference is that a pitch spends more time in the air than on the ground like a chip. The technique is very similar to the chip shot in that the same fundamentals apply. Becoming good at pitching will mean you can give yourself birdie putts on short par 4's, and on Par 5's by getting your third shot close; plus recover when you hit a bad drive. If you watch Luke Donald notice how close he hits his wedges to the pin. Controlling the Distance The key to good pitching is distance control. Most people are not too far left or right of the target, but will be either too far or too short of the target. Once you are making a good stroke and contact with the ball the key concept that will control the swing is the same as the putting stroke. The distance is controlled by the length of the swing and the rhythm stays the same. This will give you consistency, and the distance you hit your wedges will become very predictable. Using the Clock- The key fundamental to controlling the distance of your wedges is to understand the varying lengths of backswing required for each distance. Imagine your left arm is the hour hand on a clock and different times give you different distances. Use just three to start off with and these will provide you with a good base. Begin with 8 o’clock, 9 o’clock and 11 o’clock or half swing, three-quarter swing and full swing. Look at the pictures and practice getting the correct length of backswing. You can use a mirror or video to give you some good feedback on how well you are doing. It is good to do this with all of your wedges and record each distance. You can then write this down in your yardage book or by putting a sticker on the back of your wedges.

8 o’clock swing

9 o’clock swing

11 o’clock swing

Get a Range Finder if you can- A great aid to help you get better at distance control with your wedges is a range finder. When practicing on the range this will give accurate information about your 56

targets and on the course aid your distance control. If you don’t have a range finder you can use a yardage book or pace out the yardages. But, a range finder will make this much easier and more accurate. Have a good set of wedges with the correct loft progression- The wedge set-up you have in your set will greatly help your distance control. What you want is an even spacing of the lofts so that you will get a good spacing of the distance you hit each wedge. The spacing should be approximately 5 or 6 degrees between each wedge. Common setups would be 47, 52 and 58 degrees or 48, 54 and 60 degrees. Be aware of this if you are buying new wedges. How to Practice- If you go to the range, work out how far away the targets are. Try to practice at a facility that has a good number of targets inside 100 yards and work on getting close to each target. Alternatively, if you have a facility where you can hit your own practice balls; mark out 3 targets that are at 3 different distances such as 20, 40 and 60 yards and hit shots to them. In each instance work out what length or swing is required to hit the ball the correct distance. Ensure you hold your finish and keep getting lots of good feedback.
