Henrik Rages at Arnold Palmer Invitational Should players’ be timed

H

enrik Stenson was angry with tournament officials at the Arnold Palmer Invitational after late mistakes cost him victory. The Swede three putted the 15th for a bogey and did the same for a par on the 16th. Matt Every eventually became only the third player to defend this title in the tournament’s history. The victory was overshadowed by Stenson, who claimed his group were placed on the clock for slow play and also time monitoring by the referee, which affected the outcome of the tournament. Stenson also suggested the underlying issue was to complete play before live broadcasting ended at 6pm local time. He said, “I thought we were here to play golf not to finish at 6pm.” While he was quick to praise Every for winning, Stenson’s third consecutive top-four finish was enough to take him to the world’s number two.

COLCHESTER

H

aving decided to expand our offer to a new level this year, your reaction so far has been very positive! Mrs X had been waiting to try the new Srixon XXIO ladies driver and after 2 days came back and ordered one! Remember if there is any driver you wish to take away and try, just call in and we’ll be pleased to advise and help. Sales have been great across all ranges and with all the different choice of clubs, our selection of clothing in both men’s and ladies, our enlarged trolley selection (see our lithium battery offer), the expanded range of GPS and viewfinder equipment and our biggest range of balls we have ever had with some deals that might ease the pain of loosing one or two! On the clothing side we held our first ladies charity afternoon for the captain and her ladies from Clacton Golf Club. Everyone seemed to enjoy the event, money was raised for her charity, some members won prizes while others enjoyed the shop, tea and cakes. If any other lady captain would like to do the same contact Sue at the store. We hope you are all now up and running and we look forward to seeing you some time so we may help you to look good and play better golf.

BT Comic Relief Brings Smiles to The Warren G&CC A

s part of the Comic Relief activities this year from within BT, Phil Redhead from The Notleys Golf Club, and Chairman of the Jubilee Cup, invited a wide range of Essex and East Anglian folk to The Warren Golf & Country Club (www.warrengolfclub.co.uk) for a round of golf all for a great cause, in a new tradition stemming back from the inaugural game last year at Saffron Walden Golf Club for Sports Relief in 2015. Nearly thirty golfers from a variety of backgrounds in and outside of BT came together to raise £330 for Comic Relief – contributing to the £72 million of charitable donations in 2015, and over £1 billion raised so far for Comic Relief causes. Phil wishes to thank a number of groups who participated in the success of the event – not just BT staff from Global Services, TSO and Openreach, but the members of The Notleys Golf Club (including Vice Captain Adam Painter), and the Seniors Touring Amateur Golf Society (STAGS www.stagsgolf.org.uk), and the BT Research Golf Society (www.btrgs.org.uk) which also supports exBT members. The event was eventually won by Derek Pettigrew from The Notleys Golf Club, with second place going to Playgolf Colchester’s Peter Quilty who narrowly pipped Suffolk club Woodbridge’s Roger Mayhew. The team honours definitely however went to Suffolk with Peter Quilty’s Essex support as Roger, Tony Dann and Jonathon Brown triumphed overall from the BT golf society based out of the Martlesham (Adastral Park) Labs – BTRGS!

However of notable charms was the wooden spoon winner of the STAG society John Turner, who, whilst having the notoriety of the last place overall, also came out Top Trumps with the cash prize for the sweepstake of Comic Relief Red Nose comedy noses. Well done to Derek, Peter, John, and also a MASSIVE amount of thanks to Christian Foreman and the team from The Warren who presented an excellent pre and post golf meal, as well as a lovely course and venue to play at which enabled us to maximise both our playing enjoyment and our charity donations. Phil is shown here in his Comic Relief t-shirt and the obligatory Plus Four trousers for good effect – and with all the lovely cash that went to an excellent charitable cause. Bentley Golf Club Ladies Raise £140 for Charity in Memory of Andy Parsons

B

entley GC Ladies came out in the rain to honour Andy Parsons, who passed away last year. A Shield was introduced in memory of Andy Parsons, who was a founder member in establishing the Ladies Section 38 years ago. Ladies were asked to pay a minimum entry fee of £3 with all proceeds going to a charity of the winner's choice. The winner and the first recipient of the Shield was Kyo Koge and nominated Cancer Research UK as her chosen Charity. The Andy Parsons Shield was donated by her husband Dave Parsons and he kindly presented it to Kyo on the day. Chris Bassett, Lady Captain said this is a most fitting way we can remember Andy, today and in future years.

No Disruption for Members as SGD Produces New Look For Channels GC

C

onstruction on a new golf course at Channels Golf Club should begin later this month after the Swan Golf Designs (SGD)negotiated planning permission was granted in late February. The new-look course, at Little Waltham, near Chelmsford, will see a modern, 18-hole course, designed for golf in the 21st century, with more water hazards. The course – which will be immediately to the north of the current site – will feature 11 new holes, while seven from the existing design will be adapted to complete the lay-out. And, as part of the design brief, SGD will keep 18 holes open at all times in order to minimise disruption to the club’s large membership. William Swan, SGD director and the family’s third generation of golf course designers, believes construction on the course will begin in the next four to six weeks – with the newlook 6,670-yard, par-72 Channels course fully open by 2017. He explained: “Over the last couple of years we have been working through the detailed planning application process which has involved consulting with Chelmsford City Council, Essex County Council and the Environment Agency, as well as several other environmental, ecological and archaeological consultants. “Throughout this process we’ve been making minor design alterations to the proposed golf course layout to take into account their advice but without compromising the objective of

producing the finest golf course in Essex. Our brief is to provide a golf course fit for the 21st century, as the sport has, of course, taken massive strides technically in the last 30 years.” The site of Channels Golf Club – originally Channels Farm – can be traced back as far as the Domesday Book, where, in 1086, the manor of 225

acres had pasturage for 50 sheep and 10 goats. In 1975 Channels opened its first nine-hole golf course and then, two years later, on June 7, 1977, the Silver Jubilee bank holiday, opened its second nine to make it an 18-hole course. In April 1994, the new 18-hole layout was opened while the original holes constituted a further nine-hole course: Belsteads. Fully open by summer 2017.

LOAD & ROTATE FOR MORE

Power C

reating more power relies primarily on the lever system and the sequence in which you unwind the back swing into the ball. Firstly, load the swing. In Picture 1 here at the top I have fully loaded, my wrist hinge and created the most acute angle possible given my flexibility. Now my lever system is ready to go. It just needs a carrier to get them to impact.

1

Rotate ... In Pictures 2, 3 and 4, my downswing is led by my middle body rotating around to the left, followed by my shoulders and knees, followed by my arms, followed by the handle of the club. The very last thing to arrive at impact is the club head. Getting this sequence right is imperative to creating power!

Titleist and Golf Foundation Continue Partnership T

itleist, the #1 ball in golf, has announced that it is to continue to support the Golf Foundation as the charity encourages more youngsters into regular golf at club level. Titleist has been a long-term supporter of the Golf Foundation’s commitment to offer children and young people the opportunity to play golf and enjoy the benefits the sport has to offer them. This partnership plays a key role in the charity’s national ‘HSBC Golf Roots’ programme, which

works to make the sport more accessible for young people from different backgrounds and circumstances. The Foundation offers first golf

experiences to children in schools and communities and then seeks to provide long-term playing opportunities at golf clubs with support from the charity’s main partners. For 2015, Titleist will provide golf balls (all bearing the HSBC Golf Roots logo) that will be used in major Golf Foundation promotional events and fundraising activities and also out in the field as the development team spreads the junior grass roots message at golf clubs and driving ranges. HSBC Golf Roots reaches hundreds of thousands of youngsters a year from the classroom to the lesson tee at golf clubs. HSBC Golf Roots Ambassadors include Titleist Pro V1x loyalist Lee Westwood, Solheim Cup winning Captain Alison Nicholas and former European Tour player and respected broadcaster Ken Brown. Brendon Pyle, Chief Executive of the Golf Foundation, said: “We are highly grateful to Titleist for having the understanding and commitment to play a key part in supporting the next generation of golfers in this way. Strong golf companies who share our vision to find new players and work to keep them in the game should be applauded. “Our team of enthusiastic regional officers is actively training more teachers, sports officers and volunteers to support PGA Professionals who, through initiatives like our Junior Golf Passport, are creating more golf club members. Working with Titleist and our other key partners, we can reach many more youngsters together in 2015 and that is very exciting.” Matthew Johnson, Titleist Brand Director, said: “Titleist is delighted to be supporting the Golf Foundation’s ‘Golf Roots’ initiative during 2015. As the #1 ball in golf, we see this as a great opportunity to educate these avid young golfers on the importance of the golf ball as a piece of equipment and how selecting the correct golf ball will help them to shoot lower scores. Furthermore, the reasons why the overwhelming majority of the world’s best players trust a Titleist golf ball are the exact same reasons as to why they should also play Titleist.” www.titleist.co.uk www.golf-foundation.org

The Flatter Area of the Swing and Hitting Up Properly

A

nother misunderstanding from launch monitor numbers is hitting up on the ball for better launch angles and longer drives. This is not accomplished by playing the ball forward and flicking up with the ball being contacted on the wrong part of the face delivering a glancing blow. It is accomplished as per the images below (ignore the angles) which you will notice the players: 1. Compared to address Left shoulder is high and back (chest more at target) at Impact 2. There is still shaft lean no flicking 3. Hands working up and left following left shoulder

DELIVERED TO YOUR DOOR

FREE OF CHARGE

This ball is hit on the up as a result of the way the player unwinds from the top of the backswing which results in what appears to be a flat area in the arc of the swing and contributes to a more level angle of approach helping the launch angle and spin rate. The golfers left shoulder goes down out and around back, before reversing sequence on the downswing so when the left shoulder has returned to roughly its address location the hands will be over the right thigh and at their lowest point. As the left shoulder continues on its rotation up, in and back with the hands following and the club head starts to make a flatter area which results in an upward impact condition (approx. 2 degrees in this case) with a little shaft lean just prior to the left side bracing fully, decelerating and relaxing to the finish. I have explained this via upper body because it is simpler than explaining through pressure in the feet and the directions of force or how the shaft performs. JUST UNDERSTAND THE UPSWING IMPACT IS NOT BALL FORWARD AND FLICK BUT HOW YOU COIL ON THE BACK SWING AND RECOIL ON THE DOWN SWING TO CREATE THE DISTORTED IMPACT ARC. It would be far more beneficial to have more loft than playing the ball forward and flicking.

Try Less to make more Putts ... Putting should be the easiest part of the game, but often it becomes the most frustrating part. Logically, you would think that having done all the hard work in getting to the green, hitting a long iron or a driver would be much harder than making a short stroke with a putter, but often it doesn’t work out that way and putting becomes a source of pain. However, you need to have a good attitude if you want to putt well on the course and below are some ideas that all good putters to use. You also need to develop some key skills such as starting the ball on the correct line, distance control and green reading but a good attitude will help us all putt better.

Don’t be scared to miss or 3 putt ...

Expect to make the putt, but don’t be disappointed when you miss ... You need to be positive but on the PGA Tour, Graeme McDowell is leading the tour statistics with putts made from 20 feet of just 8%. He is one of the best players in the world so don’t beat yourself up too much.

Enjoy putting and don’t try too hard ... The harder you try at putting the worst it gets. Aim to try less, focus on your target and enjoy walking to the green to putt. You won’t necessarily make every putt, but you will increase your chances and your experience a lot less frustration.

Good putters are positive and don't worry about 3 putting ... Aim to be positive and focus on rolling your ball to the target without fear ...

Put like a kid and just enjoy rolling the ball at your target ... If you watch junior’s putt, they really enjoy the challenge of trying to hole the putt without fear and just enjoy developing their skills. Watch some juniors putt and try to copy their carefree attitude.

Powakaddy Study Unveils Electric Trolley Health and Performance Benefits T

he potential health and performance benefits of using an electric golf trolley have been revealed in an important study commissioned by the market’s very first and leading brand, PowaKaddy. Conducted by golf physiotherapist Andrew Caldwell, who provides services to clients such as the PGA and England Golf, the literature review suggests that some golfers who choose to carry their clubs could be at a higher risk of certain musculoskeletal injuries and impaired golf performance. As well as potentially elevating the likelihood of musculoskeletal injuries by lifting the golf bag using an asymmetrical, dominant hand lift, carrying was shown to contribute to the onset of Golf Specific Fatigue, resulting in reduced clubhead velocity and potentially playing a factor in poor decisionmaking. “Although claims have been made about the health benefits of electric trolley use for many years now, this literature review has evaluated the best available research and collated the current evidence on factors, such as energy expenditure cost, injury risk and golf performance,” said Caldwell, Clinical Director of Active Therapy – Physiotherapy & Golf Sports Injury Clinic, based at the Chase Golf Health Club & Spa in Staffordshire. “Due to PowaKaddy commissioning this review, we have attained further important information based on the evidence to date, which examines the potential benefits of electric trolley use for golfers. “The limited nature of the research, however, suggests there remains scope for a wider and more specific piece of research to be conducted

in this area,” added Caldwell, who specialises in physiotherapy and athletic performance for golfers of all standards, from tour professionals to recreational players. “Nevertheless, the research to date suggests that, for certain golfers, the use of an electric trolley may offer improved golf performance and reduced injury risk.” Other headline findings included the significant reduction in energy expenditure and heart rate amongst golfers using electric trolleys over those who carried. This reduced metabolic demand of not carrying could help them to perform at their peak level for a longer period of time. Significantly, less well-conditioned golfers, or those with reduced walking efficiency, may benefit most from not carrying and instead using an electric trolley. There is also meaningful evidence to suggest that carrying could contribute to a 2.5% reduction in clubhead speed experienced over the course of a round of golf, which may result in a loss of up to 10 yards on tee shots. Having played an important role in establishing this piece of research, PowaKaddy CEO David Catford said: “Through his work, Andrew has highlighted the problems that can be caused by carrying a golf bag. This supports our position that electric trolleys are not only good for your health, but also for your game. “This message we think will be valuable for all golfers, regardless of age or ability, when thinking about how they transport their golf clubs around the course. Carrying a bag puts you at a disadvantage. This alone should be enough to persuade all golfers to consider an electric trolley.” www.powakaddy.co.uk

SkyCaddie’s Masters 2015 Social Media Countdown O

ver 33,000 SkyCaddie fans on the company’s worldwide Facebook and Twitter channels will receive original content celebrating the last 20 years of The Masters, in a 20-day countdown to 2015’s first Major tournament. Each day, followers will be told a different story from past tournaments, condensed into around 200 words and covering every Masters since Ben Crenshaw’s win in 1995. The updates will be broadcast on SkyCaddie’s wide range of Facebook and Twitter feeds, covering SkyCaddie and SkyPro in both the UK and the USA, plus on the company’s other global social media feeds including the popular @SkyCaddieSteve Twitter channel, in which golf course mapping expert Steve Winstone updates over 9,000 Followers about where SkyCaddie’s latest professional on-foot course mapping team are that day.

The content is being created by Magic Hour Media, the firm’s UK PR & marketing agency, which manages SkyCaddie’s social media channels on both sides of the Atlantic. The agency’s Andy Hiseman and golf writer Matt Cooper both produce social media content for the Jackson, Mississippi-based golf technology firm. “As a golf lover there is no more enjoyable writing job than re-visiting past Masters tournaments and telling the story in your own words” said Hiseman. “Our mission this golf season is to create compelling and original daily content for SkyCaddie’s large global social media audience, whether that is from the world of SkyCaddie, its products and users, or from Tour golf which is where we all get our ‘Major’ inspiration to play better”. Golfers can Search for SkyCaddie and SkyPro on Facebook and Twitter to discover the new Masters content, and can follow Steve Winstone on Twitter to discover which golf courses SkyCaddie has recently re-surveyed in their area.

Roly Hitchcock is Head PGA Professional and Golf Manager at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club. Roly joined the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) in 1996 and started his training at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club. In 2007, he became Senior Teaching Professional for the club. So far, during his career, Roly has held a variety of significant teaching posts including U16s Girls Coach for England Golf’s east region, and Essex County Coach. He has also worked for various development academies. In 2013, Roly qualified as a PGA Level 4 coach, but his personal and professional development didn’t stop there! He is in the process of studying for an MSc in Sports Coaching that will further his understanding of the wants and needs of every golfer whom he teaches. Roly believes that impact is the most important part of the game and is often the area that many golfers neglect in all aspects of the game.

Shaft Angle is the Key to a Good Short Game T

he trajectory of the golf ball creates the outcome of your shot. If you can control the flight of the golf ball, then you can control the distance your shots will go.The lower the golf ball flies the further the ball will run along the floor, much like an aeroplane coming in to land at great speeds; the ball takes time to stop. If a golf ball were to generate height in its trajectory, then the ball would not roll very far, similar to the way that a helicopter will drop almost vertically from the sky and stop. So the roll on the golf ball on landing is determined by the trajectory of the golf ball after impact. If you hit a chip with a three iron, it will run further compared to playing a shot with a sand wedge due to the 35 degrees difference in the loft. When playing a chip or pitch shot you need the bounce of the club to work for you properly and this is done best with the shaft of the club in an upright position. This position will produce more loft.

Golf Membership Open Weekend

When the shaft is leaning forward, you are decreasing the loft of the golf club and there is a risk that the leading edge of the club could dig into the ground – a common fault in wet conditions. When playing any short game shot the main key areas to cover are (for a right-handed golfer): 1. Body weight slightly favouring the left side, with your sternum slightly in front of the ball. 2. Club shaft vertical at address. If playing a lofted shot use a lofted club or use less loft when playing a running shot. 3. When swinging the golf club, make sure your body weight stays in this position, but you rotate your shoulders and hips to allow the golf club to move. (Keep the hands and wrists out of the shot, only the elbow hinges). 4. This will then allow you to return to your starting position, and maintain the correct shaft angle for the desired shot.

BUILD STRONG

FoundationS I

see very regularly golfers joining a gym, to improve their golf, and chose exercises that just will not improve their golf! I believe In building strong foundations. Once strong foundations are built you are a much more stable unit in the gym and within your golf game. Always follow functional movements, the following are 6 that I like to use with every client to get the body functioning properly and getting the muscles working as a team. Below are the 6 functional movements and an example exercise for you to try, please look up each exercise on YouTube and make sure you have your technique perfect:

PULL One arm standing cable row or one arm resistance band row

BEND For a golfer I feel this is essential! The bent over cable or resistance band row I use a lot.

LUNGE Walking lunges I am a big fan of.

GAIT My preferred movement here is sprints ... this is an advanced exercise so to lower the movement I would basically recommend walking! Functional movements strengthen the core, improve and strengthen the posture and get the body working together hence building a stronger more stable golf swing. Walk forward

PUSH UPS These do not have to be full, you can lower to push ups off the knees

Pronation grip

Barbell

TWIST My favourite exercise for golf here is all types of wood chop ... reverse wood chop, horizontal wood chop, normal wood chop. - 34 -

When we practice putting what do most people do? They practice a straight flat putt and hope that this cures their issues. I would be the first person to suggest that in order to improve your stroke for putting, yes you should do this. In order to improve your putting however requires something totally different! So what is the difference between your stroke and your putting? You develop a stroke and you create a strategy for your putting. Creating a very good or great strategy takes time to implement but once this is done, Putting becomes easier to accomplish and poor putting is all but eliminated. We will still miss putts, but you will have a better understanding of why. So how do we improve? Routine is at the heart of us improving our strategy. Also, being able to practice it and understanding it for ourselves. How best for us, could be to see it and/or feel it and/or maybe to hear it. Our eyes can be massively essential in judging line and pace, but equally through our feet which are 60 times more sensitive than our eyes, can be just as affective. Also, some people can hear the ball off the face and going in the hole. There is no one strategy for all to fit into. It is finding the right strategy for you the individual. This is the only way we can improve if we find the best and natural way for you to learn and to become the best you can be. So why is this article related to ‘The Masters’? When we watch ‘The Masters’ every April, we admire the beauty of the course, the tradition of the event and the greens themselves. There are so many slopes at Augusta that there are only a number of pin positions available to the Green Keeper. This is down to a phenomenon called ‘The Angle of Repose’.This is where with the slope of the green is at a certain percentage and the speed is at a certain Stimp. This means the ball cannot stop in these areas. This is why you see so many shots end yards away from where they originally landed. People that win ‘The Masters’ always have the correct strategy for the greens and mostly always have great short games and/or are great at putting.

wozthegolfpro1

Introducing the ‘ZEN GREEN STAGE’ and how it can benefit you? Beneath is a picture of the ‘ZEN GREEN STAGE’ my latest addition to aid my coaching. On this green, I can create different percentage of slopes and scenarios within a 15ft radius of the hole. We can work on why you might miss certain putts and I will help you to understand the correct strategy to help you become confident and capable of putting to the best of your ability. Just remember this point. A lot of people might not be Professional Golfers in the way they hit the ball, but the one area they can be a Professional at, is putting. It is the biggest leveller in golf. If you would like to come and see me for an individual lesson the first 2 hours are for £75. These 2 hours can be tailored to each individual. I am running some putting seminars during April and May and for 3 hours plus lunch is £45. I can outline what strategy on the greens is best for you utilising Vector Green Reading. This system can be tailored to help you with your putting. Dates; The Essex G&CC - Sunday 19th April at 9-30am and 1-30pm, Friday 24th April at 9-30am and 1-30pm, Saturday 2nd May at 9-30am and 1-30pm. Epping GC – Monday 20th April at Midday and Monday 27th April at Midday. How about a days golf with a putting session and 18 holes on the course helping to improve your strategy. Cost would be £360 which includes Lunch and can be for up to 4 people. This article is dedicated in the memory of my Father Stan Sargent who died in November. My Dad was a great putter and used a Bullseye type putter. Paul Curry his great friend used to call him ‘Sevvy Sargent’ as he could hole all manner of different putts from different lengths to different slopes. He had a strategy and could out putt most Professional Golfers. Rest in Peace Dad and thanks for your inspiration!

have just returned from a very special and memorable experience with a pre arranged meeting with HRH The Princess Royal in which she learnt about the objectives of the launch of This Girl Can and now the National project of This Girl Can Coach which is run by SportsCoachUK. I have been the Head Coach of the EnglandU18 East Regional squad now for two years which just does not seem This Girl Can Coach. possible as it was a position which I benchmark and monitor. It was through this role I never thought was within my grasp. It is the ability to communicate, support and possess the rapport which forms part of the Professional Coach player relationship. The technical, tactical, psychological and fitness elements are all very important but should be coached in line with these often omitted “soft” skills.

GolfingGirl introduces you to a wonderful sport and new friends Why not give Sarah a call to find out more?

Sarah has been running GolfingGirl for many years, successfully promoting and introducing girls and ladies to golf. A formula which has ensured many of them remain in the game after initial sessions and join a Club. The variety of events sees many players return, years after they started to encourage new ladies and promote sustained growth of the game. Many have handicaps with one lady attaining a handicap at the age of 72, demonstrating its never too late to start.

This communication developed into a major section of the course between the invited coaches from athletics, golf, cricket and hockey which was encouraged away from the venue and one which I sincerely hope can be built upon. #This Girl Can Coach was developed to highlight the many opportunities and openings for women within sport with the vision of offering and inspiring new participants to participate within a variety of exercise and activities through the National campaign of This Girl Can. The enthusiasm and commitment were plain to see in the room whilst HRH Princess Royal listened intently asking quite specific questions so she could build up a precise picture of every sport. HRH is certainly very knowledgeable in all sports and possesses a real sense of humour with a relaxed demeanour, a real inspiration to everyone. As I am sure you know HRH was one of the first Women to be named a honorary member of the R&A, unfortunately I did not find the right moment to mention this! - 41 -

Essex County News www.essexgolfunion.org

Essex Played Cambridgeshire in the first County Trials friendly of the year at Saffron Walden for the David Hall Memorial Trophy. The Course was in excellent condition with fast running greens. Research suggests that Cambridge fielded a strong side including two debutants. Essex held a 3-2 lead after the morning foursomes with Strong performances from Andy May & Jay Beisser (on his return to the Amateur Ranks), County Captain Ross Dee & Mitchel Sarling and Scott Hudson & Elliott Oxlade. The afternoon singles proved to be most exciting with Essex drawing first blood with an outstanding performance from Elliott Oxlade who birdied four of the first five holes romping home with a 7&6 victory supported solidly by Andy May with a 3&2 Victory in the top match. Cambridge showing their experience battled hard to secure five singles victories and a nail biting half in the match between Dave Quinney (Cambs) and Scott Hudson which meant that the David Hall Trophy would be shared for the first time in its nine year history. A further notable Essex performance was from Bailee Curran who demonstrated an exhibition of length and accuracy off the tee coupled with a solid performance on the greens to secure an impressive 4&3 victory on his County Debut. Why do Golfers Slice the Ball?

I

think it's fair to say that the majority of golfers slice the golf ball ( lose the golf ball to the right for a right handed player) but why does this happen? In my opinion this is one of the most misunderstood areas of the game - but easily curable with a reasonable technique and the correct golf club. In previous articles I have spoken about how a driver with the incorrect shaft length

can encourage a slice but let's look at the bare bones at what actually happens. In the graphic above you will see two shots hit with a driver. As you can see both shots look pretty similar. Both have a left to right bend on the shot - technically a 'push slice'. Now let's have a look at the spin axis of the shots. This is the combination of side spin and back spin that 'tilts'

- 44 -

the golf ball. Think of it like an airplane taking off, if the right wing dropped lower than the left the aircraft would bank right. This graphic shows us how severely the spin axis bends the ball to the right. At 15.1 degrees the ball has a significant slice.

So what is the actual difference between these two shots? Below you will see two graphics that have both the swing path and face angle at impact. The orange line shows the club path and the yellow

line shows where the face points at impact. The blue line is where the golf ball starts in relation to the target. What you will notice that on the both swings the club path into the ball is completely different. One comes from ‘Outside In’, the traditional thought on slicing the ball, and the other from ‘Inside Out’ what many believe will draw the golf ball (move the golf ball right to left). But both shots are lost to the right? This is because the face angle on both shots is aiming right at impact – ultimately they are doing the same thing. It is a know fact that face alone is responsible for 85% of the golf balls direction – that only leaves 15% for the club's path. If you think about it the golf ball only 'feels' the collision, it does not know how the clubhead got there – and that is why face angle at impact is so important. Playing the correct style of driver makes driving the golf ball much easier – just because it's the latest model does not mean it will cure your problems.

The Jubilee Cup Update from Jubilee Cup Committee, sponsored by Seabrook Warehousing, and reported by Chairman Phil Redhead

W

elcome to the Jubilee Cup 2015 season! By the time you will be reading this, the website will have been updated by the results of the first Round 1 games. Our first results have been posted with Bentley, Chigwell and Forrester Park taking first blood over Epping, Brentwood and The Rayleigh respectively. Specifically updated will be Royal Epping Forest versus reigning Jubilee champions Warley Park, plus Rochford Hundred versus 2014 semi-finalists PlayGolf Colchester due at the end of March. With Round 1 matches needing to be played by 12th April there should also be a whole lot more results on the cards too. Check out the results at: www.jubileecup.com/matches2015/Draw1.htm Looking ahead, Round 2 matches are due to be played by 10th May and crucially we will be at the half way stage of the League phase. Given the make-up of the League and the fact that only the League Winners will go through to the Play-off stage, the early runners will be sign-posted for following – but definitely not assured to go through with a further two matches to play by 5th July. Round Two matches to be played are as below, and on a personal note, I am very much looking forward to welcoming Benton Hall to my home course (whether I am playing or not!)

Just on this point, could I please maintain “the ask” of your club match organisers that you continue to notify the Committee when you have agreed a date with your opposing Captains. Please do so by mailing the following e-mail address: JubileeCup@yahoo.co.uk. lacton-on-Sea Golf Club chairman Mr Bert Foster welcomed members to the Club’s Annual General Meeting, during his opening remarks, Chairman Bert thanked all the staff, professionals, directors and members on the Golf committee for all the hard work that has been put into the club during the past year to make the year probably the best on record. The upgrading of the club house has now been completed, and the

Last year’s winners – Warley Park Golf Club.

The full 2015 Draw is already uploaded on our website www.jubileecup.com and you will have full visibility, on a per match basis, down to individual player basis of results when they come into the Committee. To do this, go to the URL above, hover over the “Results & Tables” button underneath our sponsor’s banner for Seabrook Warehousing, and choose “2015 Results & Tables”. Click into the Round you wish to see, find the match you wish to review and then click “Show Match” (on right hand side of the listed match). This will bring up the results cards showing all singles and pairs match results – with this facility I was able to see that one of our great supporters from Brentwood Golf Club, and formerly of Woolston Manor, Russell Phillips and partner Steve Haynes only very narrowly lost out to Gavin Foster and Phil Burns of Chigwell GC. Please do come through to me if you would like to take part in supporting the competition, please spread the word to other clubs for the 2016 competition – my own conversations with Risebridge recently during the Norman Plum match with The Notleys will hopefully add a further club to our competition next year, and I know there are other interested players and committees out there too! Best regards Phil

Burnham on Crouch Pro-Am PGA in Essex Captain David Hawkins.

The PGA in Essex returned to the picturesque Burnham on Crouch Golf Club for the first time in many years and the comments after the tournament indicated that we will be returning much sooner next time. The stunning views over the River Crouch were seen in a strong wind which made scoring very difficult although Steve Cipa from South Essex Golf Centre made it seem easy by recording an impressive 66, four under par. This was good enough to win by a clear five shots from the trio of James Webber from Three

Rivers, Mark Stokes from Rayleigh Golf Range and James Scade from Ingrebourne Links. This result gives James Webber a clear lead in the PGA in Essex Order of Merit although a prior engagement mean that he misses the next event at Toot Hill. The Team event was closely fought with three teams tied on 81 points, the winning team on countback was steered home by Professional Sam Ellis from North Weald Golf Club and comprised Wilf White, John Hancock and Phil Handley.

Toot Hill Pro-Am Andy Pestell from Chelmsford Golf Club made a late debut to the 2015 season in style by taking the spoils at the delightful Toot Hill Golf Club.Very slick but perfect greens caused some problems for the field but in cool but pleasant spring sunshine an impressive seven birdies in a one under score of 69 was good enough to win by two shots from Mark Baker from Colchester

Golf Club and Richard Miller from Rayleigh Golf Range. In the Pro-Am event the team of Professional Jason Levermore with amateurs Barney Cameron, Martin Gillett and Mark Guerny won by 2 points with a nine under score of 81. In second place was the amateur team with Matt Stables from North Weald Golf Club.

Essex Open Pre Qualifier The qualifying event for the Essex Open was played at Wanstead Golf Club on 24th March with over sixty golfers, both professional and amateur, competing for a place in the main event which this year will be the 95th playing of our ‘major’.

Colchester Ladies M

ost of Colchester ladies’ competitions so far, this year appear to have been a two-horse race with Catherine Chick beating Cassie Cunningham on each occasion by a short head. This was the third time in five outings that Chick, playing off 30, has headed Cunningham (5) in shortened course competitions, the course being reduced to 17 holes this week due to planned maintenance.

Wanstead Golf Club.

With thirty players already exempt from qualifying, there were spaces for a minimum of thirty more plus those tied for thirtieth place and competition was fierce. Relatively calm conditions greeted the field at the East London course but scoring was not easy with the added pressure of qualification.West Essex Professional Chris Baron set the mark with an excellent two under score of 67 which was later matched by Gary Carter from Five Lakes and these two scores were never bettered. Amateur Josh Cardy from Channels Golf Club came in with a level par score of 69 which was a tremendous performance under the circumstances.

Forthcoming Events Our final event of the season, apart from the Essex Open in May, will take place on Monday 30th March at Woodford Golf Club to coincide with the celebration for the club’s 125th anniversary. A very full field, bearing in mind that it is a 9 hole course, will enjoy the unique atmosphere and ambiance of this charming club set on the edge of Epping Forest. We hope for spring sunshine for our last event of the winter.

Woodford Golf Club.

Cassie Cunningham.

Any decent score was hard work on an unforgiving course with little run, and it was her handicap, which finally beat Cunningham returning 30 points to Chick's 32. In third place was Philippa Deman (7) who returned 29 points. Sheena Nunny the winner of last week’s competition repeated her win in the Support Stableford (14 holes) competition with 24 points from her 17 handicap. Liz Lennox (16) took second spot with 19 points and Beverley Parker (24) piping Marilyn Wood (16) for the fourth place after a countback.

SMS INC Announces 2014 UK Golf Participation Figures L

eading sports research company SPORTS MARKETING SURVEYS INC. (SMS INC.) reveals the results of their investigation into the British Golfer and their playing habits, a review which has been run annually since the mid-90’s. Golf participation in GB finally stabilised in 2014, just above the 3.3 million mark, offering hope to the golf industry after a decade of decay. This succeeds news that 2014 saw an increase in the number of rounds played by 3.5% compared to 2013 (SMS INC. 2014 GB Rounds Played Monitor) following a warm and dry summer, without any major UK based major sporting events. A local and victorious Ryder Cup in Scotland – with good weather around it – will have boosted interest and play frequency. Further good news from additional SMS INC. intelligence confirms that equipment sales in GB have levelled across most categories in terms of volume and value, suggesting the ‘downturn’ is over. Although golf participation remains at its lowest level for over a decade, SMS INC.’s study signposts clear progression and opportunities for the sport to grow. For the second consecutive year female participation has risen, as has the number of ‘avid’ golfers (who play at least once a week on average). It is this group of golfers (Avid) who define and guide the sport, so the industry should be buoyed by the additional 53,000 players whose play frequency brought them into this dedicated category in 2014. As per the 2013 statistics, a cause for concern is the number of ‘infrequent’ golfers, who play less than 12 times a year, which is at its lowest on record in this millennium (1,786,000). Time is a major factor influencing player numbers, and may be the significant reason behind the decline in infrequent golfers. Richard Payne, Senior Manager of Sports Accounts at SMS INC. commented, “Whilst the 2014 figures give the golf industry reason to be more positive, the continued decline of infrequent

golfers remains a challenge that needs to be overcome. SMS INC. has continuously stressed the importance of the ‘three F’s’ – Fun, Flexible, and Family’, a vision which the industry must fully adopt following these latest figures, to convert both first-time trialists and new golfers who may be using driving ranges into full-length course users, and secondly to prevent the loss of more infrequent players. ” SMS INC’s participation report also examines golf’s position in comparison to other sports. As per recent years swimming, running and cycling are the top three sports in GB in terms of participation, and all exude the image – ‘Fun, Flexible and Family’. www.sportsmarketingsurveysinc.com

Adams Golf Announces Red … It’s a New Hybrid

A

dams Golf, makers of the No. 1 hybrid on the PGA TOUR since 2008, this week announces the arrival of the new Red hybrid. The benchmark product in the Adams stable, Red delivers players of all abilities an appealing, confidence-inspiring shape with proven performance. Red’s versatility delivers on what golfers need, when and where they need it. Shot-shaping properties make it easy to find optimal ball flight (draw, fade, low, high), while sole, crown and head features deliver easy launch conditions for Tour players and amateurs alike. Red incorporates several new advancements into a clean and elegant package, all designed to help the golfer hit better shots more consistently. Adams engineers found new ways to innovate in the hybrid category, adding features that allow Red to meet the demands of golfers everywhere. Many of the core attributes were created following critical Tour player

feedback, an integral part of any club development process. The result was Red, featuring a beautiful, playable shape without sacrificing shot-shaping options and playability. All in, the recipe for Red is simple: • Adams has bucked the trend set by many of today’s hybrids, which in the endless search for distance, have grown larger and larger in size. Instead, engineers placed the focus on versatility, utilizing a smaller head (95cc) that can handle a wider variety of difficult shots and make them easier to hit from all conditions. • Adams’ patented upside-down head design brings the CG lower, promoting easier launch and greater demand from all lies, increasing playability and inspiring player confidence. Together, these two features produce an attractive head with Adams’ classic distinctive toeshape that is long, forgiving and easy to launch. But, there’s more: • To keep ball speed fast, even on off-center hits, Red utilizes Adams’ trusted and proven Velocity Slot TechnologyTM on the sole and Ghost Slot TechnologyTM on the crown. • As an extra benefit to those seeking maximum shot-shape options, three transferrable weights on the sole (one 25g & two 2g) can be configured to promote the flight that works best. The result of these ingredients is Red: an aesthetically pleasing hybrid that will work for the golfer to make the game’s difficult shots easier. www.adamsgolf.com

375g to 415g. For those preferring to promote a curved swing path, weights can be mixed for a total weight of 395g with a bias to either side. The adjustable weighting in the Switchback XL adds another custom fit option to Rife’s long standing Lie-Aline custom fitting system. When purchased in store, the double bend shaft can be easily adjusted by the retailer to the perfect lie angle for the golfer’s set up. The matching of the white sight line and the notch in the back of the face gives the golfer a repeatable stance with the sole of the putter flat to the floor. In addition to the custom fit options the Switchback XL benefits from Rife’s RollGroove™ technology. Milled grooves in the face of the putter deliver a quick, true roll by gripping and lifting the ball forward at impact. This technology has helped the world’s best players to victories on all major Tours and continues to deliver one of the best possible rolls in golf. In the Switchback XL the oversize Blade design breeds confidence in alignment and stroke while the combination of Rife’s Tour proven technology and the latest adjustable weight innovation make the Rife Switchback XL a fantastic option for anyone who takes their putting seriously. • Loft: 2 degrees • Standard Lie: 71 deg • Material: 304 stainless steel www.rifegolf.com

Each pocket has been positioned carefully to make it easier to access balls, accessories or clothing from the bag when on a trolley or golf buggy. There is also a useful insulated cooler pocket for holding cold drinks and a velour-lined valuables pocket to store important personal belongings. Other notable features on the Dry-Series bag include 14 full-length dividers to hold clubs securely, an integrated umbrella sleeve and a fullywaterproof rain hood that can be simply attached to the top of the bag when needed. ww.motocaddy.com

illers Barns outgoing Captain Frank Warbey presented a cheque for the outstanding sum of £6072.69, a phenomenal sum for a small club, to the Essex Air Ambulances senior fundraiser, Sabi

Blyth on Monday 16 March. The money was raised during the past year by the members, juniors and visitors to the club. Frank thanked all those who helped him over the year, his sponsors, Grantleys Electrical, Simon Archer Plumbing, John O’Connor, Smith’s Trophies and the staff and management of Millers Barn Golf Park, also the Ladies Captain Brenda Welch and senior Captain Colin Bull, and generally everyone, who donated or gave their time, and moreover, their money, over the past year. The money was raised by competitions, raffles and donations. A truly massive donation to a very worthy charity, that relies on public donations. Richard Leads R

ichard Shackell leads the field in with 41 points at Colchester Golf Club. Playing in the CHAPS Stableford his score was three points clear of the rest of the competitors in this charity event. CHAPS was originally founded as a local prostate cancer charity and has grown to be an advocate for all men’s health issues. The golf club has supported its efforts since its inception. Shackell’s golf was in direct contrast to the dull day on which the competition was played, and his round was highlighted with three birdies which from his 20 handicap gave him four points on each of the holes. These four-pointers were able to cover up the odd blemish on an otherwise steady round to give him his comfortable lead. With a reasonable turnout of 76 players, a clear second spot was taken by Richard Arnold (28) with 38 points and two players recoding 37 points, they were Barry Haley (11) and Andrew Archer (14). Handing in 36 points and taking fifth and sixth places were Stephen Bozier (12) and David Drake (16). The ladies also held a stableford where Heather Dennis came out tops with 33 points from her 19 handicap. She was followed in by the inform Sheena Nunny (17) with 32 points. Dennis’s strength proved the old adage that the backbone of a good round is the par threes. She was just one over par after playing all four. Likewise, Nunny who, courtesy of a birdie on the 16th, was also just one over par on the par threes. Roberta Bodsworth (21) took third spot overall after a countback from Joan Cotterill (26) and Catherine Chick (31) all three players were on 31 points.

Kevins Joy K

evin Petch took Colchester Golf Club’s Cystic Fibrosis Stableford with 37 points. Playing in one of the first groups out Petch returned 37 stableford points from his six handicap to put himself one clear of the field. The day’s weather was not brilliant. It was a cold and dull day, but the course is now poised to spring to life. A bit, more sunshine to encourage some growth and the members can look forward to an excellent year of golf. Turning the corner at the ninth Petch was one over par recording 20 points. A zero score on the 11th hole was his only real blemish, although he did record a double bogie on the 17th but quickly recovered on the 18th. A good drive put him just clear of the trees to the right of the fairway and a superb iron shot put him close to the difficult back right pin position. After a two putt on the green, his par was a just reward for an excellent round.

Frank Retains The Crowne Plaza Trophy At Five Lakes GC T

he 114 golf members were welcomed with a complimentary coffee and bacon baguette on arrival to proceed the competition followed by a buffet lunch provided by the Crowne Plaza Resort Colchester – Five Lakes who also sponsored the event. Open to all sections of the golf club 7 & 5 day members, ladies, juniors and gents sections. Played in very testing conditions with a stiff north westerly wind with accompanying rain led to some interesting scores. Nearest the pins on the par 3’s 8th and 16th holes were won by Phil Roblin and Mike Owen. The Junior prize went to Joe Hart (14) the 2015 Junior Captain with 30 points. The Ladies prize went to Lady Captain. Sarah Mann (18) also with 30 points. There were three gents with 35 points, Dave Chignell (13) and Tony Cook (13), however with a better back 9 holes, 3rd place went to Mick Gill. Second place went to long time club house leader Mark Ponder (8) with 37 points. However, winner

and retaining the Crowne Plaza Trophy for a second year is Frank Taylor (18) with 39 points. Get into golf

is Getting Bigger and Better A

major digital marketing campaign, run through the Get into golf scheme, is set to get more people golfing. Already highly successful, Get into golf is designed to inspire adults in England to take up the sport and play more often. The programme is now stepping up its marketing with a digital campaign running from April to July. “This is the first national advertising campaign designed to attract thousands more people into the sport,” said David Joy, Chief Executive of England Golf. “We are expecting it to reach hundreds of thousands of people with a surge in awareness of the sport and the campaign – all building on the already highly successful Get into golf programme.” The digital advertising will bring potential new players to the Get into golf website where they can find out about golfing opportunities near them through an activity finder as well as book online.

To ensure there is plenty on offer for potential newcomers, golf clubs and PGA professional can now add their own activities and take advantage of the national marketing drive to grow their own business. Nick Arter, PGA professional from Play Golf Colchester, says: “I can highly recommend this. The Get into golf website is making the sport easier to access and book. It also takes away any apprehension and helps take the stuffy image out of golf. “It’s a great opportunity for golf clubs and PGA professionals to take advantage of increased awareness and promote their own businesses. You can easily add local activities to the Get into golf site and these can then be accessed through an online booking system.” Ryder Cup hero Justin Rose is backing Get into golf: “This is just what golf needs. It is fantastic that more people will have access to the sport.” www.getintogolf.org www.englandgolf.org

Free Junior Memberships are Right on Q for UK’s Largest Golf Resort Group Q

Hotels, the UK’s largest golf resort operator, is leading the drive to find the game’s next generation of stars after announcing free memberships for juniors at all 11 of its UK venues as part of its new QFairway club – the country’s most flexible golf membership. Providing access to 15 courses across England and Scotland, the ground-breaking initiative is offering a wide array of benefits to youngsters eager to follow the example of world number one Rory McIlroy and become a Major champion. Available to children aged 15 and under, all juniors will receive a free membership when they sign up to the enterprising new club, providing their parent or guardian also has adult membership at the same time. Q Hotels – the AA Hotel Group of the Year – will also present each youngster with a complimentary seven-iron from the MKids range when they join to practice their skills, thanks to its partnership with The Masters Golf Company. And juniors and parents keen to ‘test drive’ the innovative membership for themselves have the chance to do so later this month by enjoying a round of golf on open days at five QHotels resorts on March 26 and 29. The opportunity to experience the unique QFairway will take place at Aldwark Manor Golf & Spa Hotel, near York; Forest Pines Hotel & Golf Resort, north Lincolnshire; Hellidon Lakes Golf &

Spa Hotel, Daventry, Northamptonshire; Telford Hotel & Golf Resort, Shropshire; and the Westerwood Hotel & Golf Resort, near Glasgow. Complimentary practice range balls, with a free ‘swing and grip check’, will be available before the round, with food and drinks in the bar afterwards. John Angus, QHotels’ group director of golf, said: “Juniors are the lifeblood of the game and it’s vital for the long-term future of golf that they are given the best chance possible to play and develop. “It’s our aim at QHotels to encourage as many people as possible to play, whatever their age, and it would be lovely to think that in 20 years’ time, someone is in contention to win a Major as a direct result of the new QFairway membership initiative. ” QHotels – which includes such prestigious venues as The Carrick at Cameron House, Slaley Hall and Forest Pines in its portfolio – believes QFairway ushers in a new era of membership designed by and for the 21st century golfer. The QFairway flexible points-based membership gives players all the benefits of a traditional club membership – including the facility to hold a handicap and playing rights for club competitions – while offering discount on food and drink, shop purchases, tuition, hotel bed-andbreakfast rates, and, most impressively, access to all of QHotels’ 15 golf courses. www.qhotels.co.uk

Golfing Welcome for Disability Sport’s Charter for Change G

olfing welcome for disability sport’s Charter for Change England Golf has welcomed a new charter which aims to grow the number of active disabled people.

The Charter for Change, from the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS), outlines the key changes needed to ensure many more disabled people can reap the benefits of being active for life. Jamie Blair, the England Golf Disability Manager, said: “We believe that this framework emphasises the approach we are already taking with golf clubs. We are engaging with disabled people, finding out what they want and including them within golfing activity at clubs and facilities.” England Golf is currently working with 17 counties, identifying three clubs in each which offer a high quality experience of golf for disabled people wanting to take part. “We are encouraging these clubs

to talk to disabled participants and find out what they want from our sport - whether it’s range based-activity or support to become a championship golfer,” said Jamie Blair. The School of Golf at Little Channels, Essex, worked with the City of Chelmsford Mencap group to set up a Discover Golf project. Students visited the club for taster sessions and eight of them took part in a five-week structured coaching course which concluding by playing on the course. Club members support the sessions and new beginner sessions are being set up to continue the relationship. England Golf’s county network will support the MIND “Get Set to Go” project which aims to get 74,000 people with mental health wellbeing issues active in sport. County Development Officers will work with local MIND Sports Coordinators to offer golf as part of a multi sports club and to create Get into Golf opportunities in their area. The EFDS Charter for Change asks that: • Everyone involved in providing sport or physical activity will support disabled people to participate. • Disabled people will have the same opportunity as non-disabled people to be active throughout their lives. • All communications about sport and physical activity will promote positive public attitudes towards disabled people’s participation. www.englandgolf.org Follow us on Twitter: www.twitter.com/EnglandGolf Facebook: www.facebook.com/EnglandGolf
