Seve Ballesteros comes to the Big Screen

Despite being blocked at almost every turn in pursuit of the sport he loved, Seve Ballesteros fought against adversity to become the most spectacular and charismatic golfer to ever play the game. ‘SEVE’ combines dramatic recreations with electrifying archive footage to tell his incredible rags to riches story; from humble beginnings on the beaches of Spain – where aged six he taught himself the game with a broken 3 iron strapped to a stick – to becoming world number one and the greatest golfer of a generation.

The young Seve is played by José Luis Gutiérrez Real. Born in Santander, Spain, just 5km from Pedreña, where Seve Ballesteros was born, José never considered becoming an actor until he was offered the opportunity to play young Seve. His hero since childhood, José met Ballesteros when he was younger. Little did he know, four years later he would be playing his idol in a film.

Directed by John Paul Davidson (Stephen Fry in America, Brazil with Michael Palin) and edited by Saska Simpson (The Three Kings, Paranormal Witness) with original score by Academy Award winner Stephen Warbeck (Shakespeare in Love), ‘SEVE’ is

produced by Stephen Evans (Much Ado About Nothing, BAFTA nominated The Madness of King George and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind) with the full support of the Seve Ballesteros Foundation.

‘SEVE’ will be released in cinemas across the UK and Ireland by Entertainment Film Distributors on 27th June 2014. 20% of the production’s profits will be paid to the Seve Ballesteros F o u n d a t i o n ’s nominated charity, Cancer Relief.

The Seve Ballesteros Foundation honours Seve’s life, achievements and professional career. It has a mission to preserve his legacy by supporting his passion, golf, and what it can do foryoung people.

Seve set up the Foundation in 2009, committing to contribute to the advancement of science for the benefit of those suffering from brain tumours.

It also aims to introduce children to golf and to use the game as a vehicle for social development, instilling the values associated with its founder: humility, effort, perseverance, spirit, determination, integrity, tolerance and respect. Seve Ballesteros Foundation www.seveballesteros.com

THE BURSTEAD GOLF • CLUB

Safety on the Golf Course Fore is another word for ahead, yelling fore is simply a shorter way to shout, “watch out ahead.” In other words, any golfer who hits an errant shot that sends a golf ball flying towards other golfers should shout “fore!” as a warning. I was getting ready to tee off on the 6th hole with my four ball at my local golf club a few weeks ago when suddenly we saw a golf ball hurtling towards us, we all ducked to get out of the way of the ball but unluckily my partner was struck on the head by the ball, and knocked out for seven minutes. We called an ambulance right away, and he was taken to the hospital to be thougherly checked over and released with slight concussion. However, the point is no one shouted fore! Tony Hawkins

Golf drives £3.4 billion into England’s economy Golf is worth a massive £3.4 billion annually to the economy of England and employs nearly 50,000 people.

The value of the game is revealed in a new report, commissioned by the England Golf Partnership and prepared by SPORTS MARKETING SURVEYS INC. It shows that one person in every 19 in England plays golf at least once a year – a total of 2.8m – and that the sport’s contribution to the economy includes:

• £1.88 billion from golf facilities, via green fees, membership fees, food and beverage, driving ranges and golf lessons • £836m from golf equipment, with clothing accounting for £305m and clubs for £170m • £800m in wages for almost 48,500 employees • £442m in golf course maintenance and investment • £108m from golf tourism • £40m-plus to charity

The report states: “Even in difficult economic times and against a background of concerns that the game may not be being played to the extent that it once was, it is still a huge contributor to the English economy with an economic contribution of £3.4 billion.”

By comparison, the Manchester United sports franchise was reported by Forbes in January 2013 to be worth £2.1 billion. The Premier League is reportedly generating £3.4 billion from domestic broadcasting over the next three years, says the report.

In total, golf’s £3.4 billion annual contribution is equal to £61 for every man, woman and child in the country. This is expected to grow as the national economy improves and is coupled with robust efforts to recruit and retain new golfers and to encourage lapsed players back into the game. In particular, the report identifies the “immense” opportunity for further growth if more women can be attracted into the game.

The country currently lags behind the other main European golfing nations with its proportion of women players: in England around 14 per cent of golfers are women; in the leading European countries the figure is around 30 per cent.

Braintree Golf Club Braintree Golf Club is delighted to announce they have agreed a three year sponsorship agreement with Cooper Chelmsford BMW.

Chelmsford online. Braintree Golf Club members can also look forward to a benefits package on both new car purchases and servicing.

Roger Wright, Commercial Manager at Braintree Golf Club has welcomed the agreement by saying “We are thrilled to have signed this agreement and believe that by being associated with an iconic, luxury car brand will raise our profile considerably. Cooper Chelmsford BMW is a fantastic business and we are looking forward to working with them over the next three years.”

Earlier this year the luxury German carmaker signed a 4 year extension to its sponsorship of the European Tour with the agreement covering three tournaments, the PGA Championship at Wentworth, the International Open in Germany and the Masters in China. Stewart Hicks, Dealer Principal at Cooper Chelmsford says “BMW is a strong and trusted partner of golf and I am excited about the business opportunities our agreement with Braintree Golf Club will bring.”

As part of the agreement there will be flag sponsorship and course cup inserts with sponsors logo. Our practice putting and chipping greens will also be sponsored and there will be a website link which will allow users to gain easy access to Cooper

This has been an exciting time for Braintree Golf Club with major course investments being made recently culminating in the installation of a new lake located between the 6th and 7th holes which opened for play in the spring of 2013. A number of fairways have been completely refurbished, bunkers have been restyled and reconstructed and all greens have had extensive work carried out to make them playable 12 months of the year. The Directors at the golf club believe that these projects have significantly enhanced the course for both members and visitors alike.

YOUR GLOVE WILL REVEAL ALL!

We have all heard of the saying “Your camera never lies” but have you ever thought about the information your glove can provide to you and your PGA Teaching Professional?

There are a number of elements that I mention to my clients regarding the hold with the following two areas relevant to this article. • Positioning of the fingers on the grip • Grip pressure

The golf hold is one of the most important aspects of the game and in my view it is essential that the many separate components are understood completely. It is vital that regular check ups are made with your golf Professional as many swing faults can be directly attributed towards an inconsistent hold from an early stage and right through your golfing life. A grip change, as you may already be aware is one of the hardest areas to change as it is the hands are generally the only point of contact with the club and even the slightest alteration can feel so uncomfortable and unnatural. (sounds familiar!)

Fig 1: Incorrect left hand position.

- 12 -

The hold position affects the clubface position during the backswing which can have a knock on effect on THE most important part of the swing which is when the club face strikes the ball. In Fig 1 the glove shows me immediately the club is being held too much in the palm of the left hand instead of the fingers, this causes a number of faulty positions during the first part of the swing which compensations have to be made generally prior to impact. The additional wear marks on the thumb and index finger demonstrates increased pressure combined with friction created during the swing. This indicates that the thumb is not ideally positioned possibly down the centre of the handle with the club held too tightly. The picture below in Fig 2 shows a leather glove with no wear or friction marks which has been used on a regular basis.

Today’s Irons Only Hit The Ball Further Due To The Loft Being Strengthened? Without doubt iron design has changed over the last few years with golfers now hitting their new irons further than ever. Many of the golfing ‘purists’ will say that this is simply down to the stronger loft now found in modern iron designs but if you look in a little more detail you find that the loft has changed but not necessarily for the reason you maybe thought. If we compare a pitching wedge from twenty years ago to the modern day equivalent you would find a difference of 5° (50° compared to 45° now). This is where the ‘purists’ base their argument, 45° is more like the loft of a 9 iron so the ball should go further. In principal this makes a lot of sense but the biggest change between the old and new designs is the face construction. Manufacturers are now using harder materials for the face, couple this with variable face thickness across the set to promote a trampoline effect you get much faster ball speeds, even on mishits. In turn faster ball speed increases the launch angle so even with less loft the modern day iron actually launches higher than the older designs. Less Loft = Higher Launch! So, if the ball launches higher with less loft you can

imagine what would happen if we put the old loft back on – it would go straight up in the air with no distance. I think it’s fair to say that for many years the only way to increase an irons distance (from the head perspective) was to decrease the loft but now loft is overshadowed by materials and construction. What the club is as it sits in the bag is immaterial to what it does as it strikes the ball – and that’s all that matters, after all loft is only a number.

Visitscotland and Sky Sports to find Ryder Cup’s ‘Best Brilliant Moment’ From the famous concession by Jack Nicklaus to Tony Jacklin in 1969 at Royal Birkdale to Martin Kaymer’s nerve-jangling putt to complete the Miracle at Medinah in 2012,The Ryder Cup has been full of brilliant moments over the years. Now VisitScotland and Sky Sports have launched an exciting campaign to find the nation’s favourite Ryder Cup Brilliant Moment in the history of the competition ahead of the matches at Gleneagles in September. Launched by Sky Sports lead golf presenter David Livingstone and Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond, the campaign features 10 brilliant moments from the 87-year history of The Ryder Cup as chosen by Sky Sports analysts Colin Montgomerie and Butch Harmon. Featuring brilliant moments such as Sam Torrance’s winning putt at The Belfry in 1985 and Darren Clarke’s emotional walk to the first tee at The K Club in 2006, the campaign will ask Sky Sports viewers to vote on their favourite brilliant moment from the shortlist. And any viewer who matches the final choice of Butch and Monty is in with a chance of winning the trip of a lifetime with an incredible prize including tickets to multiple match days at The 2014 Ryder Cup, including The Ryder Cup concert and opening ceremony, four rounds of golf, bespoke club fitting and luxury hotel accommodation. There will also be 50 pairs of matchday tickets to The

Ryder Cup for runners-up prizes. First Minister Alex Salmond said: “I am delighted to see this campaign between VisitScotland and Sky Sports to find the best Ryder Cup Brilliant Moment as Scotland prepares to host The Ryder Cup for only the second time in our history. “It is a competition which never fails to excite and with the eyes of the world on Scotland and Gleneagles in September I look forward to there being many more brilliant moments to add to the collection.” David Livingstone, who has led Sky Sports’ extensive live golf coverage – including 10 Ryder Cups – for the past 19 years, said: “I have had the privilege of witnessing many brilliant Ryder Cup moments over the years and to narrow down so many into a shortlist of 10, never mind choosing the best one, was no easy task for Butch and Monty. “But is shows just how much The Ryder Cup means to both players and golf fans alike and we are excited to team up with VisitScotland to give viewers the chance to vote for their favourite. As the home of live golf it makes perfect sense for us to team up with Scotland, the Home of Golf to uncover the nation’s favourite Ryder Cup moment as the excitement builds towards Gleneagles in September this year.” The campaign is due to run on all Sky Sports golf coverage, starting with the Aberdeen Asset

Mike Tindall Leads Champagne Celebrations at Celebrity Cup

Rugby World Cup winner Mike Tindall led Team England to victory and champagne celebrations following a thrilling finish to the Celebrity Cup at Celtic Manor. Captain Tindall was cheered on by his wife, Zara Phillips, as England avenged their defeat in last year’s final to the same opponents, Scotland.

“The boys did really well,” said Tindall. “I’m happy because it means I can now ring Sir Steve Redgrave and tell him I’ve been able to do something he wasn’t able to do as captain last year.” The other members of the winning team were actor and entertainer Bradley Walsh, Dragons’ Den entrepreneur Peter Jones, cricketer Graeme Swann, former world champion swimmer Mark Foster and The Good Wife star Matthew Goode.

Home side Wales, led by television star Rob Brydon, finished in third place after beating Ireland in a play-off. Brydon vied for the biggest laughs over the weekend with former Coronation Star regular Walsh and Mrs Brown’s Boys star Brendan O’Carroll in a tournament where the banter was every bit as entertaining as the golf.

The England team, from left, Bradley Walsh, Graeme Swann, Peter Jones, Mike Tindall, Mark Foster and Matthew Goode with the Celebrity Cup trophy

O’Carroll said: “Apart from raising money for the charities, the most important thing was not the golf but entertaining the people who came out to see us. I just hope they’ve had as good a time as we have.

“I play in charity golf events all over the world and this has been the best organised tournament and the warmest welcome I’ve ever had.”

The two charities to benefit from a fund-raising gala dinner auction were the Caron Keating Foundation and the Play Golf Help Save Lives defibrillator campaign, founded by former Ryder Cup captain Bernard Gallacher who was the Celebrity Cup’s golf ambassador and mentor to the star players.

Other stars to compete in the event which delights celebrity spotters and golf fans alike included Irish singing superstars Ronan Keating, Brian McFadden and Keith Duffy, actors Dougray Scott, Philip Glenister and Andrew Howard, rugby legends Gareth Edwards and Gavin Hastings, and TV presenter Gethin Jones.

Good Alignment Will Mean Straighter Shots!

If you are not aimed correctly your swing will not hit the ball to your target and you will have to make a some compensation in the swing to get the ball to go to your target. The main problem with aiming is that you are standing to the side of the ball as opposed to say snooker when you are looking directly down the line. The key concept is to understand to aim correctly, your feet, knees, hips and shoulders have to be aligned parallel to you target line. Ways to Check your alignment – Here are some easy ways that you can check that you are lined up correctly. You may like one of these methods or use a combination to ensure you are aiming at the target each time. Practice with a club on the ground – When you go to the driving range to practice put a club, alignment stick or other straight edge on the ground so that you have a reference point to aim correctly.

Put the club across your thighs – The great teacher Harvey Penick recommended this way to help your alignment. When set up put the club across your thighs you then move this out to the target line. You will easily see if you are standing parallel to the target line.

- 24 -

Check how you look up at the target – When you are setting up to the ball focus on how you can turn your head to look at the target. You want to just swivel your head, and you should be looking at your target. If you feel you have to look over your shoulder to see your target you are aiming to the right. Get used to just swivelling your head this way so that train your eyes to get used to what correct aim looks like. Be aware!! 1. A lot of tees don’t point at your target or even down the fairway. Make sure your align yourself to the target instead of just aiming where the tee is pointing you. 2. Most golfers aim well most of the time ... Be aware of certain holes or situations where you might aim badly. A lot of right-handed golfers tend to aim right especially on dog legs right. 3. When your practicing don't just aim down thematt line at the driving range. Hit shots different targets on the range. It will help your aim on the course

The strategy was introduced by TV sports personality Di Dougherty, who told the audience: “I really believe in the work of England Golf, the importance of this plan and in us all working together to promote and develop the game, which offers so much to so many people of all ages and abilities.” The event highlighted a host of success stories from clubs across the country including: Cookridge Hall Golf Club in Leeds, which has links with 50 local schools and gives taster lessons to around 1000 youngsters each year. Stonelees Golf Centre in Kent has engaged with local disability groups to offer golf to over 100 disabled people.

Tea in the Marquee

Ladies enjoying their tea.

Rochford Hundred Golf Club recently hosted ‘Tea in the Marquee’ a fund-raising event in support of the Lady Captain, Beryl Claxton’s charity the ‘Dogs Trust’. Sam Davis from the Dogs Trust gave the ladies an interesting talk about how this charity works. This was particularly relevant as there is a newly opened facility just off the A127 going into Wickford. All the eighty or so guests had a very enjoyable afternoon. Beryl was extremely

pleased that over £1,500.00 pounds were raised as a result of this event. She thanked all the ladies and gentlemen of Rochford Hundred Golf Club who donated their time to make all the delicious cakes and sandwiches.

Shelly Celebrates

In glorious sunshine, Shelley Persent celebrated her Captain’s Day at Colchester Golf Club last week.

In what is intended to be a relaxed day with a competitive edge the ladies played a progressive stableford, with one score counting from a team of four on the first six holes then two scores on the next six and finally, all the team’s scores counting on the final six holes.

The winners with an impressive score of 87 were Jane Lochore, Claire Hebden, Lesley Laxton and Maureen Crosbie. Par golf would have produced a score of 84, and to better this was a good solid team effort. However, they were not alone, as they were only separated from the second placed team of Marilyn Wood, Nerys Horrocks, Bridget Whitworth and Katie Cooper after a countback.

Refreshments were served on the white tees by the Cabbie Shelter and more substantial refreshments after the 18th.The Lady Captain was

more than ably supported by her husband Hilary plus their daughter Maddie and son Louis.

In third place was the team of Penny Fairs, Adrienne Strover, Gill Minns and Rosie Helliwell, who had a total of 86 points. Nearest the pin prizes went to Cathy Burchell on the 8th and Philippa Deman on the 16th.

UN-FUSE YOUR ARMS GET ONTO PLANE When you swing the club to the top of the swing, there are two major points to consider, firstly, we have the body rotating in the centre and secondly, our arms moving around and slightly up, the club also moves around on the end of the arms, but it is dependent solely on the arms to influence its journey. If you think about this logically the body moves the smallest amount, the arms move the greatest. Picture 1 and 2.

1

2

For the swing to work efficiently from the top of the swing and allow the club to move down to the correct plane to the golf ball, this sequence has to be reversed in the downswing, 3 the arms must move back down the swing at a greater speed than the body can rotate. I find with club golfers, and I apologise for the generalization is that the bigger muscles of the torso outstrip the speed in which the arms swing down. This leads to an over plane downswing and a resultant slice with the longer clubs. Alternatively, pull with the shorter irons. Picture 3.

A great drill to 4 5 help with this is shown in Picture 4 and 5 where I am swinging my arms down to waist-high whilst holding my left shoulder behind the ball. If done correctly it may help to do it in-front of a mirror, you will get the feeling that the arms are un-fusing from the body and in the swing, you will sequence 6 correctly and deliver the club on a plane as I am doing in Picture 6. Why not join me at my Academy at Forrester Park Golf Club or one of my residential tuition breaks discuss your swing needs.

Disabled Golf Association DGA ESSEX launched in style at Rivenhall Oaks GC. 16 disabled golfers, some with impairments and able-bodied members mainly drawn from the club came together to celebrate the launch of the Disabled Golf Association ESSEX region. Paul Houghton volunteers for the DISABLED GOLF ASSOCIATION (DGA) to run the region and had put a lot of time working with other organisations including LIMBCARE, THE SOCIAL GOLFER and DANCING GIRAFFE who came and supported the day. Most played out on the 9hole course (twice) available at Rivenhall Oaks but some enjoyed coaching on the superb shortcourse which provided a great contrast.

Paul Houghton, Bill (Pro from Rivenhall Oaks) and Ray Edwards.

Rivenhall Oaks GC has had an accessible centre for a while in terms of its well-presented facilities including a covered driving range and well stocked pro shop and bar facilities, but have undergone major works to the car park to improve the site yet further. It’s not all about the facilities, whilst they are important, to be able to go somewhere where you know you’ll get a warm welcome is what it’s all about. Well that and the golf!

As players were arriving BBC Radio Essex were interviewing some of the players about the difference playing golf was making to their lives. Paul was invited the next day onto the early morning show with James Whale. Susan Pritchard from DANCING GIRAFFE hosted the Putting Competition raising proceeds for her community interest company that serves disabled people in Essex – see dancinggiraffe.com for more information – this was won by Mike Lloyd. Before the prize giving, members of DGA ESSEX were inspired to hear Ray Edwards MBE speak about his incredible adventures as a quad-amputee raising money to help other amputees. Ray took part playing golf on the day for the first time in over 20 years and all the members who came from LIMBCARE had a thoroughly enjoyable day. Ray spoke as representative of LIMBCARE – see limbcare.org for more information. So to the 18-hole competition, in 3rd place was organiser Paul Houghton with 35points; 2nd was Keith Dolman, above-the-knee amputee from Southend with 37points; and the winner with 38points was Mike Lloyd. Mike suffers chronic pain of fibromyalgia and had travelled from Hampshire for the day’s event. The day ended with congratulations and thanks to everyone for coming, the chef for the wonderful lasagna, Bill for having us at Rivenall Oaks GC and to all those involved in the behind-the-scenes work.

A month of sunshine and great golf, what more could we ask for!

Essex Amateur Championship & Esplen Trophy The 83rd Essex Amateur Championship was held at Wanstead Golf Club over the weekend of 5th & 6th July. First played in 1924 this year’s Championship saw a field of 82 start their campaigns in drizzly rain on the Saturday morning, led at the end of the days play by Ricky Lee (The Rayleigh Club) on count back from James Allan (Chelmsford), both posting half way scores of 136 (2 under par). However it was Allan that understandably had the bigger smile of the two, thanks to his Hole in One at the 165 yard Par 3 13th hole. 45 players made the cut and returned Sunday to pursue leader Ricky Lee but despite strong efforts from eventual runner up James Allan and third placed Scott Hudson (Braintree) he could not be caught and instead, put clear daylight between himself and the chasing pack with a combined total of 273 (3 under Par) and a definitive 5 shot winning margin. Congratulations to Ricky for his solid play and strong display of front running. Played within the Amateur Championship is The Esplen Trophy, first presented by then County Golf Union President J.J. Esplen OBE in 1924 and awarded to the club team of two who score the lowest aggregate gross score over the Championships first two rounds. This year, Chelmsford Golf Club represented by James Allan and Alasdair Plumb secured the Trophy with a gross score of 282 (6 over Par) with Braintree, represented by Todd Clements and Scott Hudson, runners up. Not content with just winning The Esplen Trophy, Chelmsford’s James Allan’s strong play also saw him secure the Jubilee Trophy as the lowest scoring under 21 player of the Championship. Our thanks go out to Wanstead Golf Club and its members for their excellent hospitality and to all those that competed throughout the weekend.

Cliffords Trophy Since its inception in 2008 the Cliffords Trophy, sponsored by Tony Stubbings and family, has become a very popular fixture on the EGU’s Order of Merit calendar. Played across the recently revised Channels Golf Club on Thursday 17th July the course was in excellent condition and, coupled with the days baking weather provided a true test for all 68 of this year’s field. Despite the test, it was Clacton on Sea’s Jonathan Hewett who led at the halfway stage. Hewett was in complete control of his game throughout the morning round, setting a new course record with his 5 under Par gross score of 65. Eventually it was the steady play of Sean Kennedy (Maylands) that prevailed and with a 1 over Par finishing score Kennedy won the Cliffords Trophy by one shot over Arthur Leonard (Rochford Hundred). In the handicap section Arron Edwards-Hill (The Warren) won with a nett 132 followed by Sean Kennedy one shot back. Congratulations to Sean for his excellent display and many thanks to Channels Golf Club for their hospitality.

Herbert Bishop Vase Colchester Golf Club played host to the annual Herbert Bishop Vase on Thursday 26th June, competed for by the Captains and Secretaries/Nominated Club Official of County affiliated clubs in a better ball stableford format which proves ever popular. With the 80 players treated to warm weather all day and a Colchester course in excellent condition it was no surprise winners Neil Hutchinson and Nick McEvoy (Channels) topped the leader board on 44 points. Second place was a tightly ran affair with The Burstead, represented by John Blackmore and Terry Payne taking the plunders from Chelmsford’s Iain Wallace and Alex Bradley on count back, both posting 43 points at the finish.

Monthly Fixtures & Events Round-Up Late June saw the County Seniors team in action against Middlesex at Orsett Golf Club in the South East Seniors League. Greeted with warm summer temperatures and despite Essex taking a commanding lead into the closing stretch of the match, the final result proved a much closer contest. After some last minute drama on Orsett’s tough closing 4 holes the Essex team secured victory by 5 ½ points to 4 ½. Middlesex were also the County men’s team’s opponents in their South East League match played away at Muswell Hill on 29th June. - 36 -

Met by an old style parkland course with greens in great condition the Essex team’s golf in the morning foursomes was first class, providing a cushion of 3 points to 1 moving into the afternoon singles. It was an afternoon however that proved more evenly matched and left a Middlesex comeback possible. Eventually solid play from the Essex players over the final few holes allowed Essex to prevail and come away winners by 8 points to 4. The England Golf South East Junior Championships were held at Moor Park Golf Club on Tuesday 15th July with 9 Essex County juniors in the 84 man field. The 36-hole Championship saw Todd Clements (Braintree) leading at the midway point after a superb 1 under Par round of 71 and despite not managing to win the Championship, the final leader board included 5 County players in the top 20 - Bailee Curran (Warley Park), Taylor Carter (Rochford Hundred), Louis Lazarus (Romford), George Whitbread (Colchester) & Todd Clements (Braintree), yet another strong display by our young guns. The Essex Colts team took part in the annual East Berkshire Stag at East Berkshire Golf Club on Wednesday 2nd July and followed on their recent fine form by adding a team title to their list of 2014 successes. Ran as a 36-hole individual stroke play competition alongside a County team challenge, the trio of Elliott Oxlade (Chelmsford), Jonathan Hewett (Clacton) and Alasdair Plumb (Chelmsford) took the team title by 1 point over BB&O whilst in the individual event, Elliott Oxlade narrowly missed a play off for the trophy finishing 4th on count back. Rory McIlroy opens the world’s first Nike Performance Fitting Centre

Nike athlete Rory McIlroy has opened the new Nike Performance Fitting Centre at Archerfield Links, the first facility of its kind for Nike Golf anywhere in the world.

The Nike Performance Fitting Centre has been built to help golfers maximize their potential by giving them the ultimate custom-fitting experience along with a complete game analysis from Archerfield’s elite coaching panel that includes former Ryder Cup player Andrew Coltart and leading European Tour coach Gary Nicol.

Golfers will be able to experience the same attention-to-detail that Nike Golf Tour athletes receive by booking in for one of several fitting experiences offered at the Performance Fitting Centre.

Two-time Major champion McIlroy, who has won twice since switching to the VRS Covert 2.0 Tour driver and RZN Black golf ball, gave the assembled guests a masterclass of ball striking as he went through his bag, from wedges to his VRS Covert 2.0 Tour driver. A celebratory plaque has been commissioned to mark the occasion.

‘It was great to be part of the launch event and it’s

brilliant to see all of the hard work the teams at Nike Golf and Archerfield have put in, come to fruition.’ said McIlroy.

‘I see so many golfers who play in Pro-Ams, who are playing equipment that just isn’t suited to their game and the same guys often don’t even know how far they hit each club. They would improve their performance after going through the ultimate fitting experience from the team here at Archerfield.’

‘Regardless of your ability, regardless of your handicap or your experience in the game, the premium services offered at the Performance Fitting Centre will improve your game. Golfers will have the opportunity to be fitted to a whole new level than ever before, and the constant development of Nike Golf means they will have the best equipment in their bag,’ he added.

‘What we have at Archerfield is the ultimate fitting experience for golfers who want to improve their game.Whether they come for an hour session, half a day or the full three-day experience, we are confident they will be delighted with the services www.nike.com/nikegolf offered.’

Safety On The Golf Course Howard Swan, Chairman of the Golf Consultants’ Association and a professional golf course architect writes. “I am of the opinion that putting safety first must be a priority ... Increasing numbers of clubs throughout the United Kingdom are looking to professional consulting advice as a result of concerns over the safety of their golf courses.

costs of such events, such accidents are well known and unfortunately well-publicised, with golf clubs risking both financial penalty and risking and incurring damage to their reputation if it is shown that they have not acted responsibly and taken due regard of the law... commercially disastrous stuff. It makes sound sense for clubs to take advice about the safety of their golf courses and undertake risk assessments so that, at every juncture, at every shot, the exposure to the player, the exposure to the club, the exposure to a potential victim of an accident is evaluated and formally identified. From that process measures to mitigate the exposure, to reduce that risk, are conceived, are introduced and are implemented, being monitored and reviewed on a regular basis. We have gone too long without addressing this issue seriously until it might be just too late. Doing something about it might just be the sensible, the responsible thing.” Readers are invited to comment upon Howard Swan’s remarks. Please send to publisher@golfbusinessnews.com

Many are related to external boundaries which are simply too close to fairways and greens, resulting in serious and often untenable conflict with third party persons and properties. Equally there are many concerns being expressed over the conflicts internally in play between holes where they may not be adequately separated. Prevention is certainly better than cure in any instance, and hard work is needed to ensure that any new course or holes which are redesigned on the existing course do not create conflicts of safety and heighten concerns, either now or in the foreseeable future. However, it is common to find older courses laid out on a smaller parcel of land than would be considered appropriate today.

They may well suffer from potential safety conflicts that were not apparent at the time of their original development, which may have no obvious solution. In these situations it is essential that the risks are properly assessed and evaluated, with measures being put in place to minimise the conflicts and reduce risk..

Society Of Essex Lady Captains Past & Present Lady Captains from over 30 clubs across the County took part in the Society of Essex Lady Captains 2nd Summer Meeting at Channels Golf Club in mid-July. On a hot and sunny day, the ladies teed off from 3 tees, which

meant everyone was on the course within 40 minutes of the midday first tee slot. Although the course played a little long, most of the pairs, in the customary drawn 4BBB competition, scored well with many getting 40 points or more.

Lady President, Jan Collier and Lady Captain of Channels, Diana Reeve are pictured with the winners Jenny Frost and Jane Collier.

In third place were Carol Bell (Benton Hall) & Yvonne Davies (Frinton) with 42 points, second place went to Lynda Dunbar (The Essex) and Gina Rose (The Bentley) with 43 on count back. In first place and winners of the Joyce Layland Cup were Jane Collier (Forrester Park) and Jenny Frost (Maldon). In making her winners speech on behalf of herself and Jane Collier, Jenny Frost thanked: Channels Golf Club for hosting the day, Lady Captain Diana Reeve & members of her Ladies Section for helping to make the day such a great success, the Society of Lady Captains Committee Members for all their hard work in putting on a well organised event and of course, her playing partners. On a personal note, she went on to say that she was so pleased, as in all her years as a member of the Society (she first joined in 1989) it was the first time she had won a prize!

Bentley GC 2013 Winners.

Highly likely that all QFs will have results confirmed near to the time of Essex Golfer being published this month so please have a look at the Results on our website for the latest news www.jubileecup.com/matches2014/qsf_sheet_2014.html We also have a very interesting situation on the Order of Merits. Getting down to the final eight teams Steve Trott (Bentley) and Julian Chesworth (Thorpe Hall) are very close on points, and yet some exceptional scores at Home has removed Julian from Jubilee Cup eligibility. Leaving the way open to team

mate Mario de Capite or Jeremy Burrows perhaps, with last year winning club members John Bantick also in contention? In the Pairs Order of Merit, the headlines are dominated by players from the League phases who are not progressing to the latter stages – Mike McNulty (Royal Epping), Dave Parkins (Five Lakes) specifically. Does this mean a potential opening up to three quarter finalist club members from Stock Brook Manor? Time will tell, please keep checking the website! Please keep all your comments coming either directly to me, or via the comments box on the results sheets when you send back to the Results Secretary Neil Mitchell of Crondon Park. Check out the website for full details about the Jubilee Cup Competition: www.jubileecup.com including full Competition Rules (such as player qualification details), and the details of the League composition, competition draw, plus match completion dates. Junior Pro-Am

Regional Results

The elements conspired against us for the Junior Pro-Am scheduled for July 13th at Colne Valley by depositing a month’s rainfall on the golf course in the space of a few hours. The course quickly became not only unplayable but unsafe and golf clubs needed to be replaced by paddles! We have managed to reschedule the event for Sunday 31st August, again at Colne Valley and hope for considerably better weather. The format is two juniors plus a professional and the cost is £90 for the team which includes green fees, barbeque and prizes. As it is the holiday season we could fit in a few more teams so talk to your pro or contact the PGA in Essex and have a great day on a fine golf course.

Essex Professionals have been performing well in the regional events this summer with a total of thirteen wins of which Jason Levermore and Mark Hooper each have four. The full list of winners and venues is as follows:

PGA Championships The Junior Pro-Am is our only event during the close season but we are already looking forward to the first event on our calendar which is the Essex PGA Championships. We are delighted that the event will again be held at The Burstead Golf Club over 36 holes on Wednesday 8th October. This will be preceeded on Tuesday 7th October by the PGA Championships Pro-Am and entry forms will be available in the next few weeks. We are indebted to AUDI Harold Wood for agreeing to sponsor the Championships this year.

Overseas Pro-Am The PGA Championships will be followed by our annual overseas Pro-Am and this year we will be returning to the beautiful city of Brugges in Belgium. The format is three amateurs and a professional and it will take place from October 14th to 16th over 54 holes on three of the most spectacular courses in Belgium- Royal Zoute, Royal Ostende and Damme. Full details are available from the PGA in Essex.

DALGLISH LATE CHARGE EARNS HAT-TRICK OF WINS AT LA MANGA CLUB Liverpool and Scotland legend Kenny Dalglish was renowned for his predatory finishing during his illustrious career and he showed he has lost none of his famous skills on the golf course to mount a final-day charge to win the 2014 Footballers’ Golf Classic at La Manga Club for a third time.

Dalglish’s hopes of completing a hat-trick of wins in the prestigious event hung in the balance with just one round remaining as he lay in joint-third place with Derek Mountfield on 68 Stableford points, two behind leader Luther Blissett and one adrift of defending champion Steve Lovell.

But the 63-year-old, who plays off a handicap of seven, was in no mood to miss out on victory and returned a score of 37 points in his final round – the joint-best of the day – on La Manga Club’s renowned South Course to move ahead of Blissett and Lovell and claim the coveted title with 105 points.

Four-handicapper Lovell was chasing his third win in the last four years in the event and looked well placed after 36 holes before having to settle for a tie for second, one point behind Dalglish, with exEngland striker Steve Bull finishing alongside him after matching the winner’s third-round score.

Blissett, who had set the pace after scores of 31 and 39 in the first two rounds, had a final day to forget and could only manage 29 points to end up level with Mountfield in fifth place on 99 points, one less than former Aston Villa and England midfield Lee Hendrie who impressed on his debut. Ex-England star Joe Corrigan, Northern Ireland goalkeeper Maik Taylor and past Premier League stars Steve Sedgley and Alan Neilson were also

among the players making their debuts in the starstudded event, which was being held for the 18th time this summer.

Former Liverpool, Tottenham and England striker Paul Walsh made his first appearance in the event for many years and he was joined on La Manga Club’s famous fairways by other ex-England internationals including Des Walker, Dave Beasant, Ray Clemence and Steve Bull and former Scotland striker Alan McInally, a double winner of the competition.

The golf classic featured four days of competitive golf: the one-day Alan Ball Trophy and the threeday main event, which was sponsored this year by John Griffin, non-executive chairman of Addison Lee, London’s leading minicab company, with competitors playing alongside a different footballer each day. Entry includes five nights in the five-star Hotel La Manga Club Principe Felipe, breakfast, welcome and gala dinners and prize-giving with entertainment.

Overall team victory went to Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, with Jon Lennox, Laurence Donnelly and David Rookley teaming up to take top prize with 250 points, three points clear of their closest rivals.

The luxurious setting of La Manga Club is the ideal venue for the competition with its three championship golf courses perfectly complemented by the rest of the resort’s wideranging facilities, including a 28-court tennis centre and 2,000sqm spa complex.

PING launches speed-generating Turbulator Technology with G30 series

With an emphasis on significantly increasing ball velocity and accuracy through a combination of advanced aerodynamics, plus new face designs and materials, PING today introduced the G30 series – the company’s latest innovations that provide golfers measurable distance gains without sacrificing key performance attributes such as control and forgiveness.

The G30 series includes two driver options – standard and SF Tec (Straight Flight Technology) – along with fairway woods, hybrids and irons. The product line can be pre-ordered beginning today at PING-authorised golf shops around the world.

Glenmuir reports ‘Outstanding Reaction’ to Spring/Summer 2014 Collection

The Spring Summer 2014 collection from Glenmuir, the renowned Scottish golf clothing brand, has received high praise for style, substance and sizing from some of the leading Professional Retailers in the UK and European golf trade.

Following two difficult years due to poor weather and economic challenges within the golf market, the savvy and selective golf retailer is looking to work with brands that offer the best customer service and whose products are of the highest quality in both style and design. “The return of our classic Lambswool and Cashmere garments being produced in our own Scottish facilities has been warmly welcomed in the marketplace allowing the Glenmuir brand to further compete for the most discerning consumer across a broad range of products, sizes and colours.”

Glenmuir’s strong involvement in the 2014 Ryder Cup with the brand designing and supplying the European Team sweaters and shirts along with the Official Ryder Cup Fanwear Collection for supporters has enabled the brand to gain tremendous product exposure particularly within World Duty Free shops at the London, Edinburgh and Glasgow Airports and the new Glenmuir concession at the top of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh. www.glenmuir.com

“With the G30 series, our engineers once again accomplished something that is unique to PING products – they elevated performance significantly in key areas without sacrificing other important attributes,” said John A. Solheim, PING Chairman & CEO. “Across the product line, we’ve proved you can hit the ball higher and farther while increasing forgiveness and control. We’ve also continued our focus on advancing custom fitting in the driver and fairway woods by offering five loft positions. All of this promotes the consistent, reliable results that will help golfers of any skill level shoot lower scores and enjoy the game more.”

The most visible innovation on the G30 driver is the patented turbulators engineered onto the crown. Inspired by the aeronautics and sporting industries that put a premium on speed,Turbulator Technology reduces aerodynamic drag by significantly delaying airflow separation, maintaining attached airflow around the clubhead as it approaches impact, leading to more speed. The entire G30 series benefits from new face technologies and materials, including the introduction of T9S titanium in the drivers, which results in thinner faces and weight savings that help position the CG low and back. The fairway woods utilise a high-strength Carpenter 475 steel in the face, and the hybrids are heat treated with an H900 process. Both result in hotter, more forgiving faces. The G30 iron face is thinner for higher ball speeds while being stabilised by a new custom tuning port design for predictable distance control. www.ping.com

Nike Golf Introduces New Versatility Footwear Styles

Perfect for summer’s longer days, warmer weather and extra hours on the golf course, Nike Golf introduces two new footwear styles inspired by more than four decades of Nike’s deep roots in athletic shoe design.

Stewart Golf Announce New British Built R1 Push Trolley.

Available July 1, Nike Golf’s new Lunar Waverly and Lunar Mont Royal join the Lunar Clayton as part of the Versatility footwear family.

Nike Golf designers drew inspiration from Nike’s footwear heritage to create innovative styles inspired by iconic running and court sport silhouettes perfect for both on and off the golf course.

“The Lunar Waverly and Lunar Mont Royal were really inspired by classic Nike footwear styles, and we adapted those designs for athletes who want a golf shoe with versatile appeal,” says Carl Madore, Nike Golf Innovation Design Lead. “These are shoes with incredible performance technology that are great for playing 18 holes or wearing before or after the round, too.You can hit balls at the driving range on your lunch break without ever changing your shoes. These styles are modeled after some of Nike’s first shoes but modernized to perform specifically for our sport.”

Premium British manufacturer Stewart Golf has announced an all new push trolley that will be built by hand in Gloucestershire.

While the folded size of the new R1 Push is 33% smaller than the outgoing Z3, the console of the machine has 4 times more volume and more features than its predecessor. Specially designed self adjusting bag jaws will accommodate any style of stand, cart or tour bag, and an innovative new silicone bag strap both adjusts to bag size and grips at the same time.

The folding system for the all-new R1 Push is based on a sturdy rack & pinion system, a first for the golf industry. The patent-pending design hides the folding mechanism within the bespoke aluminium alloy frame, dispensing with any external sliding or tensioning parts. The result is a very clean aesthetic with a single strong key line running right through the machine.

Since introducing Integrated Traction technology in its footwear in 2010, Nike Golf has continued to improve the tread design for a combination of incredible traction and off-course comfort. The iconic Nike waffle sole featured on the Lunar Waverly and Lunar Mont Royal provides a more aggressive tread for superior grip and control on course, while echoing Nike’s storied history in athletic footwear. www.nike.com/nikegolf

“Although the genesis of the R1 Push was the rack & pinion folding system, the focus on the user experience on the golf course was paramount throughout the design process. We have been able to cram a plethora of features into the handle whilst keeping the aesthetic uncluttered.”

Every component on the R1 Push is unique, specifically designed for the new product. In addition, the R1 Push will be hand built in Great Britain, in a new facility close to the factory where the company’s premium X & F Series powered www.stewartgolf.com products are made.

National Skills Success Sarah Bennett Head Teaching Professional from Three Rivers who has supported the England Golf National skills Challenge for the past 4 years has heard that two of her players who attended the event at Three Rivers Golf Club have made it through to the SE Regional finals which is held at Chestfield Downs on August 7th. I will be attending as in previous years the regional finals with Ivy and Ashley who were the respective qualifiers in their age category which is a superb achievement.

“The juniors love the skills tests and can utilise these during their practice time either with their fellow players or on their own. The skills can be amended to test even further although they are certainly tricky but take into account those players under 8 years of age playing from a shortened distance.”

This year was well supported by Three Rivers Golf Club within both the Rookie and Tour challenge age groups which is encouraging the growth of junior golf.

I wish Ivy and Ashley a fabulous day with lots of fun meeting other juniors from other regions.

Darren Clarke Receives Golf Foundation ‘Spirit of Golf ’ Award a very special game and a game you can play your whole life. It demands honesty and you learn a great deal about yourself as a person as you learn to play. “My parents encouraged me to start playing golf for all the best reasons. It offers you lessons in how to behave, how to play with adults and how to respect your opponents at all times. These attributes developed in golf can then help you for the rest of your life.” Former Open Champion and Ryder Cup hero Darren Clarke has been presented with the Golf Foundation’s ‘Spirit of Golf’ Award at Royal Liverpool Golf Club. An appreciative audience watched the presentation in the Wirral sunshine at the R&A Swingzone in Royal Liverpool’s tented village on Tuesday, a stage for the Golf Foundation provided by The R&A to help the charity inspire a great many youngsters new to the game during Open Championship week.

“Darren’s career as a golfer has been great, as is his exemplary charity work for his Foundation, raising money to beat cancer, and his progressive work to help new players in the Darren Clarke Golf School.” The Golf Foundation is a highly progressive development organisation which is increasing golf participation in schools and creating stronger links between schools and golf clubs and driving ranges in support of the national bodies for England, Scotland and Wales. www.golf-foundation.org

Darren Clarke teed-up proceedings in the best possible style by playing a ‘Tri-Golf’ challenge, captaining a group of children from St Bridget’s Primary School in West Kirby against their classmates led by their own captain, BBC golf reporter Rishi Persad.

North Weald Golf Club’s New Member

The Golf Foundation works to make golf more accessible to children from all backgrounds through its HSBC Golf Roots programme in schools, clubs and communities. Every year the Spirit of Golf Award is presented to a golfer considered to be inspirational to junior golfers, thus helping the Golf Foundation and its partners to grow the game. On receiving the finely-crafted silver and glass trophy from Foundation Chairman Charles Harrison, Darren Clarke said: “This is a great honour for me. Golf has been very good to me and I try to put something back into the game and play the game in the right way.” The Darren Clarke Foundation raises funds for cancer charities and supports junior golf in Ireland, showing youngsters that golf can be a great game to take-up. The Darren Clarke Golf School is a growing international academy programme, started in Northern Ireland. Darren Clarke told the children present: “Golf is

Top Women Golfers Return to Stoke by Nayland for International Event Golfing stars of the future will return to Stoke by Nayland this October to contest the WPGA International Challenge. Hannah Ralph won the inaugural tournament here last year and organisers expect another strong field with a minimum prize fund of €30,000 at stake in the tournament which will be staged from October 16-18. Entry is FREE for spectators. The 54-hole event is part of the Ladies European Tour Access Series (LETAS) and was launched last year by The PGA to increase support of the women’s game. It will be the only LETAS event to be staged in the UK in 2014 and there will be 108 competitors including 15 WPGA members, comprising winners from the WPGA’s One Day Series and the remaining places secured via a qualifying Order of Merit over the same period. In a boost for leading amateurs, 15 places have also been earmarked for England Golf, recognising LETAS’s commitment to providing an important link between elite amateur and professional golf. There will be a Pro-Am tournament followed by a prize giving Gala Dinner preceding the LETAS event on Wednesday 15th October. Anyone interested in entering as a team of 3 or individually should contact Hannah Moul at Stoke by Nayland on 01206 265827 or email hannah.moul@stokebynayland.com.

the players and we look forward to welcoming everyone to the tournament in October.” PGA head of tournaments, Simon Higginbottom, commented: “The Access Tour offers an invaluable opportunity for aspiring pros looking to break through to the top level of golf and after the success of last year we’re delighted to be returning to Stoke by Nayland. “The event is also a high quality playing opportunity to members of the WPGA and this is something that we strive to do.” The opportunity for England’s leading women amateurs to get valuable experience has been praised by Nigel Edwards, performance director at England Golf. He said: “England Golf is delighted to be a partner with the LET Access Tour. The Access Tour provides a valuable opportunity for our top players as they progress from their amateur career by providing entry to competitive professional events.” Situated on the Suffolk/Essex border, Stoke by Nayland has the experience of staging a number of European Challenge Tour, European Senior Tour and PGA Europro events.

The 3 day tournament will conclude a busy year for the Suffolk resort of Stoke by Nayland whose Gainsborough course also hosted the ISPS Handa PGA Seniors Championship in June. Di Barnard, Tour Director of the LET Access Series said: “We are delighted the 2014 WPGA International Challenge will be played at Stoke by Nayland Hotel Golf and Spa. “The event receives great support from the PGA and England Golf and is a very important stop on the LETAS schedule, as a large part of the membership hails from the UK.The Gainsborough course at Stoke by Nayland is a wonderful test for - 59 -

Toro First For Mardyke Valley Golf Club

Mardyke Valley Golf Club in South Ockendon, Essex, has bought a range of new turf mowers, and an aerator, to improve cutting and course presentation – choosing Toro equipment for the first time.

Course manager Dave Webster says the club opted for two Toro Greensmaster 3250-D riding greensmowers, a Reelmaster 3100-D triplex and a Reelmaster 5510-D lightweight fairway mower. Added to the mowers, the club has bought Toro’s popular ProCore 648pedestrian aerator.

“We were used to our previous machinery, but Lely’s Toro quote was favourable and to be honest no one else matched up to it,” says Dave. “Their professionalism and service was incredibly reassuring.

“We’ve got good drainage and irrigation here, and, despite the undulations of the course, it’s fairly straightforward for me and my team of five greenkeepers to maintain.”

12mm every two to three days. The RM3100-D, which has Sidewinder cutting units is new technology here; in fact, this technology is exclusive to Toro and was another factor for us choosing it. The cutting units move left to right in unison which gives a more precise cut on our bunkers. Against what we were using before it’s like comparing a Ford Fiesta with a Mercedes! “What I’ll say about the GM3250-D and RM5510,” concludes Dave,“is that both these machines work hard. The quality of cut is good and together with the RM3100-D and ProCore 648 they have improved our playing surfaces, undulations and all. In fact, so much so that members and guests are coming forward to say the greens are running better and presentation has improved.”

Dave continues: “We cut the fairways to 16mm twice a week, depending on the weather. The greens are cut at 4mm every day and the tees to
