WPGA International Challenge Returns to Stoke by Nayland S
toke by Nayland will again take centre stage when it hosts the WPGA International Challenge for a third successive year. The Suffolk course will see another strong field of Ladies European Tour hopefuls chasing a €30,000 prize fund at the season climaxing tournament which will be staged from 8-10 October. The 54-hole event is part of the Ladies European Tour Access Series (LETAS) and was launched in 2013 by The PGA to increase support of the women’s game. England’s Hannah Ralph won the inaugural event in 2013 while Denmark’s Daisy Nielsen edged out France’s Melodie Bourdy in a play-off last year. There is plenty at stake with the top five on the LET Access Series order of merit earning cards on the full tour for 2016. It will be the only LETAS event to be staged in the UK in 2015 and there will be 96 competitors including 15 WPGA members, comprising winners from the WPGA’s One Day Series and the remaining places secured via a qualifying Order of Merit over the same period. In a boost for leading amateurs, 15 places have also been earmarked for England Golf, recognising LETAS’s commitment to providing an important link between elite amateur and professional golf. Di Barnard, tour director of the LET Access Series said: “Stoke by Nayland is a fitting venue to bring the curtain down on what promises to be another exciting season. “The event receives great support from the PGA and England Golf and is a very important stop on the LETAS schedule, as a large number of the membership hails from the UK. “Stoke by Nayland Hotel Golf & Spa is a fabulous venue and the Gainsborough course at Stoke by Nayland is a wonderful test for the players. We witnessed an exciting season finale last year and we look forward to welcoming everyone to the tournament again in October.” PGA head of tournaments, Ben Groutage, added: “The Access Series offers an invaluable opportunity for aspiring pros looking to break through to the top level of golf and after the success of the past two years we’re delighted to be returning to Stoke
by Nayland. The event is also a high quality playing opportunity to members of the WPGA and this is something that we strive to do.” Situated on the Suffolk/Essex border, Stoke by Nayland has the experience of staging European Challenge Tour, European Senior Tour and PGA Europro events. www.stokebynayland.com

It’s OK to Hit
BAD SHOTS Just Not Two in a Row I
f you think of Seve Ballesteros, the great Spanish golfer, you think of amazing recovery shots from out of the trees and his ability to recover. He would hit shots from under trees, out of the under growth and even car parks to make a birdie or save par ... He obviously hit bad shots to get into those positions but what he was able to do was pull of some spectacular recovery shots ... of course, we remember the ones that came off but there were plenty of occasions even for Seve that they didn’t ... So what can you learn from the great Seve? He hit bad shots as every golfer does and that is fine ... But don’t hit 2 in a row. If you are in trouble, it usually is the next shot that causes a double bogey and ruins your score ... So if you have a bad shot think about just getting the ball back in play and continuing your round. Try to play a shot that you could play 7 out 10 times successfully. Don’t compound your error by hitting 2 bad shots in a row.

Saving Golf ’s Future: Gadgets Keep Golfers Playing Longer
N
orthcroft Golf, leading golf gadget manufacturer, has launched an initiative to help golf clubs retain less agile senior golfers and extend the revenue they represent for at least a further two years. Northcroft Golf will be offering golf clubs their latest Tee-Up product to make available to their members, which is specifically designed to cut out the need to bend and allows stable placement and removal of the tee and ball, which would otherwise be difficult or impossible for the player. Retired men and women who enjoy a game several times a week still account for around half of all rounds played. Long established golf clubs today may typically have at least 10 or more members over 80 years old and this is expected
Sam Torrance OBE with the Tee-Up by Northcroft Golf.
to triple over the next five years. This represents a substantial challenge for golf clubs aiming to maintain levels of membership and related club revenues as the average age of golf club members is 60 plus. For the health of the players and the clubs, older golfers need to be supported in playing for as long as practical. If the average annual Golf Club membership fee is around £1,000 and a member would typically spend a further £500 a year in the pro shop and club facilities, a club could gain around £3,000 extended revenue per member over two years, that they would otherwise lose off their annual turnover. Golf is not just walking and swinging the upper body, it involves a lot of bending or squatting – to place balls on tees, place and pick up markers or balls and collect the ball from the cup at the end of each hole. So, there comes a time when back, hips and knees become less flexible, hands become less steady and retired golfers consider retiring from golfing. Players with trembling hands can find it difficult to place the ball and players recovering from hip or knee operation, who still want to play, have to observe caution. A recent survey of their customers by British manufacturer Northcroft Golf conclusively demonstrated that their Tee-Up can extend a golfer’s playing life by several years. The problem is not just putting the ball on the tee, but making sure it is not knocked off the tee as the placing device is removed. The Tee-Up has a patented stabilising spigot that rests on the ground behind the ball on its tee to compensate for hand tremors; it is lightweight, robust (comes with a lifetime guarantee) and stows easily in a golf bag or on its specially designed bag attachment. Using the Tee-Up, the golfer loads the ball and tee into the jaws and while still standing upright is then is able to place the ball and tee onto the teeing ground. Then after playing the shot picks up the tee. Northcroft has signed up Sam Torrance, the 62 year-old vice-captain of last year’s Europe Ryder Cup team as an ambassador for the Northcroft Tee-Up. www.northcroftgolf.com

Sophie Wins England’s ‘Most Improved’ Title
T
eenager Sophie Wheeler blew away the opposition to win the Abraham Trophy at Royal Cromer and claim the title of England’s most improved girl golfer. The 13-year-old from Orsett in Essex had a net score of one-over par 75 on a breezy day on the north Norfolk coast. She finished a shot ahead of Staffordshire’s Georgia Pritchard (Beau Desert) and Wiltshire’s Laura Curtis (Whitley). Sophie (image © Leaderboard Photography) started with a birdie four on the first and almost had a hole-in-one on the short ninth, where she holed a two-footer for another birdie. “I’m very pleased and very excited,” said Sophie – whose success coincided with the 10th birthday of her sister, Amy, who is just taking up golf.
She was one of 23 players from all over the country who earned their place in the national final on the basis of handicap reduction – and last year she came down 12 shots to 16. This season she’s already been cut to 11 and her target for the year is a single figure handicap. Sophie was encouraged to play golf by her father and enjoys the game because: “I like all the socialising, meeting new friends and improving. Also, every game you play is always different.” Now she’s playing in the English U14 girls’ championship at Royal Cromer, alongside the U16 championship. The English girls’ championship will be played simultaneously at nearby Sheringham. pr@englandgolf.org

Gary’s Quick Tips to Lower Scores ... Judge Distance J
udging distance is something we can already anticipate, if you have ever thrown your keys or a ball to someone, or maybe played bowls, judging distance is a natural inherent gift. The only main difference between these skills and putting the ball, as shown in the picture, we are looking at our intended target as we perform the task, in putting we look at the ball. To use this skill in putting is quite simple when you take your practice swing, look at the hole not the ball as I am doing in the picture. Retain this feel as you hit the putt and your distance control will improve dramatically. I hope this helps lower your scores.

he Golf Show Group has announced the dates and venue for the London Golf Show 2015 as 13-15 November at Glow, Bluewater. The country’s premier golf show which was held to wide acclaim last year, returns to build upon that success at the same location, Glow, Bluewater, one of Europe’s leading retail and leisure destinations in the heart of some great golfing countryside. Damian Benstead, Managing Director of the Golf Show Group said, “We are delighted to be going back to Bluewater. The response to last year’s show was fantastic. The accessibility of Bluewater is second to none, being 5 minutes from the M25, and offering free parking. Everyone appreciated the ease of access, and the facilities are first rate. The success of last year’s show was better than we could have hoped for, and we’re really excited to be back with even more support from the golfing world, and lots of new ideas to make the show even better.”

Lee Westwood: My View on What the Game of Golf Needs to do
I
n an exclusive Facebook interview, Lee Westwood has warned that golf needs a major overhaul of its image and format if it is to attract the next generation of players. Speaking on his official Facebook page, Westwood called on the world’s leading golf organisations to do more to appeal to young and female golfers, such as introducing a shorter format of the game and making the sport cheaper and more accessible. Recommendations from the former World Number 1 also included enlarging the hole to make the game easier and more attractive to new players. He said: “Golf is absolutely not doing enough. It needs to be promoted better – the R&A, the USGA, the PGA Tour, the European Tour, the Asian Tour, the South African Tour need to do more to encourage young players to take up the game. They need to do more in Britain to encourage women to take up the game – there’s a very poor percentage that are women golfers in Britain. “It needs to have the stigma taken away from it
that it’s an old man’s game and that it’s for the ‘toffs’ if you want to call it that. It needs to be more available to the man in the street. I’m from a working class background and I started playing on a municipal golf course – there need to be more municipal golf courses and golf needs to be made more available to everybody. “Obviously golf could be made less expensive. It needs to be quicker, with a shorter format – five hours on a Saturday or Sunday is too long to be out of the house. It needs a two hour format. The hole maybe needs to be made bigger, made easier – it’s a tough game that can become painful at times so it needs to be made fun.” www.leewestwood.com
Bushnell Scores at The Open
B
ushnell Golf reports that 96 percent of caddies and over 93 percent of players used Bushnell rangefinders to prepare for The Open
Championship at St Andrews. Bushnell says the figures underline the trust that professionals at the highest levels of the game have in Bushnell Golf’s technology and the performance of its products. The figures further improve on the impressive stats seen at last year’s Open Championship, where 83 percent of caddies and 90 percent of players used Bushnell products. It follows on from similar dominance for Bushnell products at The Players Championship earlier in the year, where 99 percent of players and 94 percent of caddies in the field used Bushnell products, including the eventual Champion and Bushnell Golf ambassador, Rickie Fowler. Ghislain Mautin, sales and marketing director at Bushnell EMEA stated, “The results of this survey clearly illustrate Bushnell’s product superiority in the market and domination on tour. Even though these results exceed last-year’s impressive count with 90 perecent of players, they do not come as a surprise to us, as each year, the best players in the world rely on our commitment to innovation and excellence to help them prepare to face world-class competition each week.” www.bushnellgolf.eu

GOOD-BYE TO A LEGEND, A NEW CHAMPION AND SPORTSMANSHIP! T
he 144th Open Championship at St. Andrews was more dramatic and compelling than a Soap Opera. With the torrential rain, very high winds and the chance of so many players to make history, it will be remembered more than say EastEnders or Corrie.
However, we said good-bye to a true golfing legend in Tom Watson. This event ended his 40 year association with ‘The Open’. I watched him tee off on Thursday, and he got a standing ovation walking down the 1st fairway. This continued on both days on all the holes. He truly deserved to finish with the clubhouse lights on in a dramatic end to Flooding Friday. I was lucky to see this happen whilst standing in the 1st tee grandstand, and the atmosphere was truly spectacular. Hats off to you Tom! With a Monday finish and back at work I saw an amazing finish culminating in Zach Johnson Putting his way to be Champion Golfer of the Year. The Putt’s he holed were just awesome, especially to make the play-off and during it. Also, Jordan Speith congratulating Zach after he had won showed the character of the young man. Even though he must have been hurting after losing the opportunity to - 22 -
be the 1st man since Ben Hogan to capture ‘The Masters,’, ‘US Open’ and ‘Open Championship’ in a row during a calendar year. What do these men share in common? Well, they all have great short games and hole putts at crucial times during their careers. The question to each and every one reading this article is; Are you spending enough time on your short game and putting? If the answer to this question is NO, then I am going to be running seminars, and also you can come and see me on an individual basis. I look at everyone as an individual, and this is proved by the fact that in putting Jordan Speith pushes his hands forward at address, whilst Zach Johnson has his hands setback. Who is correct? Well, the evidence definitely suggests both. Great putters understand what they need to do and anyone can become competent and indeed great at putting. Group Seminar Dates and each session is £45 with food to finish the session; Saturday 15th August – Putting at Epping GC from 1pm till 4-30pm Sunday 30th August – Putting at The Essex G&CC from 1pm till 4-30pm Monday 31st August - Short Game at The Essex G&CC from 9-30am till 1pm GUARANTEED INDIVIDUAL COACHING OFFER: £175 FOR 4 HOURS PUTTING – FREE IF I CANNOT IMPROVE YOU! This can be taken in a 4 hour session, in 2 x 2 hours or 4 x 1 hour. Payment must be up front, and the final assessment will come from me, based on results. I can help anyone improve their putting or your money back!

New Free “Global Golf Guide & Logbook” App
W
hat are the best golf courses that you have ever played? How many golf courses have you played in total? And which courses would you recommend to your friends? Keeping track of all this is really easy with the new “Golf Guide & Logbook” app. “Golf Guide & Logbook” is the first app in the world that enables golfers to document their rounds in their personal logbook and save them together with lots of optional additional information, such as fellow-players, event, result, photos, score card etc. Instead of collecting logo balls or other club souvenirs, users always have their golfing life with them on their iPhone. Another useful feature is the golf guide which provides important information on all the courses in the world, such as contact details, route planning, ratings etc., and therefore makes it easier for users to plan their rounds. They can always find the right course wherever they are. The “Golf Guide & Logbook” app has been devised by award-winning author Yves C. Ton-
That, who wrote the best-selling golf book “Golf Rules Quick Reference” and created the popular “iGolfrules” app that’s officially recommended by Apple. With his new app all rounds are stored in a well-organized structure in one place, and can be accessed at any time. That way, all of the great moments you've enjoyed on-course are never forgotten. And all this free of charge as the app is complimentary. “Golf Guide & Logbook” by Expert Golf is now available from the iTunes App Store free of charge.

McPartlin Trophy
McPartlin Team 2015.
T
he McPartlin Trophy is played yearly between Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Essex. The competition is aimed at high handicap, school golfers to encourage them to continue to play and compete. This year Essex hosted the competition for a second consecutive year, last year thunderstorms curtailed the games. The Wanstead course was kindly provided for us for a second year and again was in good condition. This year the weather held out and saw the nine matches tee off in sunshine. The result was to be decided by the best 7 out of 9 stableford scores. Each team having six boys and three girls. The Essex team Captain was Bethany Haste with Elisha Cox, Sophie Wheeler, Mally Phillips, Henry Taylor, Freddie Orwell, Lewis Cookson and Tommy Hicks. Unfortunately, Hertford shire proved too strong

for both other counties for the second year in a row and took home the trophy. However, that didn’t stop everyone enjoying their games. Well done to all and thanks to Wanstead.

Essex Ace Webber Denied by Monster Putt at The Last Hole E
ssex golfer James Webber came agonisingly close to landing a second successive PGA in England (East) order of merit title – but was pipped in dramatic fashion by a 50-footer on the final green. Patrick Spraggs (Woodbridge) drained a monster putt for birdie to finish at eight-underpar – one ahead of Three Rivers PGA trainee Webber. It had looked odds-on a play-off after Webber produced a magnificent eagle at the penultimate hole, sinking a 14-foot putt to tie the lead.
But Suffolk ace Spraggs, who was ahead for the majority of the second round, signed off at the 192-yard par-3 with that massive left-to-right breaker for a second consecutive 67. Webber had to settle for second after he was unable to convert his 30-foot birdie attempt. The former England amateur international said: “It was a great couple of days. I was happy to hit the green at the last and thought that would get me to a play-off. But it was a great putt from Patrick, so what can you do?” Spraggs, 24, gave a fist pump after holing the putt that would lead to his victory – his first in an order of merit event. He said: “That 50-footer on the last really capped off a good two days for me. It was pretty surreal, to be fair...I was just expecting a play-off. But I’m really chuffed to hole a putt like that. “When it was rolling, it looked dead centre to me, so I was getting a little bit excited. And the fist pump, I don’t know if that was really called for, but who cares! It feels brilliant.”
There is a new leader atop the East region order of merit rankings after Darren Charlton (Dunstable Downs) finished tied-third alongside David Salisbury (Three Rivers) Charlton almost ended up third on his own, but a slip-up at the last left him at five-under alongside Salisbury who signed for a 66 – the lowest round of the tournament. Charlton has edged just clear of Stuart Brown (Thorpe Wood), the latter following up his win at the PGA East Region Championship at Essendon with a solid tied-fifth display. The next chapter of the order of merit race will play out in three weeks at Colchester Golf Club, venue for the PGA East Region Bowl. Picture: Three Rivers trainee PGA professional James Webber, pictured in action at East Herts Golf Club, was edged out on the final green. Lee Porter, the PGA Professional attached to Hylands Golf Complex in Chelmsford, has been voted Clubmaker of the Year by the Golf Clubmakers Association in the UK. Lee now ranks in the top ten custom-fit clubmakers throughout Europe. No wonder he counts 8 touring golf pros as customers, including the ever popular local Pro, Robbie Coles.
FACTOR I
f I’m honest I think the game of golf is going a bit like tennis - the big serve or the big drive seems to draw attention from both the commentators and spectators alike. Don’t get me wrong it does make the game exciting, but the old saying “Drive for show, putt for dough” did spring to mind at The Open. Probably not what golf fans wanted or arguably not the best win for golf with Jordon Speith going for The Grand Slam but it was quite nice to see a player win who is not known for his driving distance but the quality of his putting. Not all great players are blessed with huge club head speed so it is always interesting when an event has a launch monitor on one of the holes. We all know that players like Bubba Watson and Phil Mickelson hit the golf ball huge distances but the likes of Luke Donald and Justin Rose have a far more achievable club head speed. What is very evident is just how fast professional players golf balls leave the face of the club - they drain every last drop of ball speed out of every strike.
In a recent test I used some data I had of Luke Donald’ driver when he was World Number One, his numbers were: Club Speed: Ball Speed: Carry Distance:
108 mph 161 mph 258 yds
Now you would expect a player of Donald’s caliber to have impressive numbers but after receiving his data over the course of a month or so I had three single figure handicap golfers who had the same club head speed. Luke Donald’s smash factor was 1.49 (which is obviously very good - in fact nearly perfect) but how did the amateur players stack up and what exactly is smash factor? Smash factor is a simple equation, it’s the relationship between club head speed and ball speed. For example, if you had a club head speed of 100 mph and a ball speed of 150 mph you would have a smash factor of 1.50. Basically the higher the number the better with the limit for drivers at around 1.50.
- 32 -
AS FOR MY CLIENT’S NUMBERS: PLAYER 1: Club Speed: Ball Speed: Carry Distance: Smash:
108 mph 149 mph 238 yds 1.38
PLAYER 2: Club Speed: Ball Speed: Carry Distance: Smash:
108 mph 155 mph 243 yds 1.44
PLAYER 3: Club Speed: Ball Speed: Carry Distance: Smash:
108 mph 147 mph 231 yds 1.36
What you will see is that although the club head speed does not change the carry distances vary massively - in one case dropping 27 yards. If I then said that the average customer who comes to see me would like to hit the ball “about 15 to 20 yards further” you can now see the importance of quality of strike (Smash Factor). Flight conditions also play a major role
in distance. In fact if you had two golfers with exactly the same club head speed but different flight conditions (launch, height & landing angle), one good and one poor, you could expect to see a difference of 40 yards in distance. In my opinion the golf industry currently has too much emphasis on club head speed and not enough on ball speed - giving you a golf club that increases club speed is relatively easy, giving you more ball speed is a little more difficult. Basically, if you want more distance off the tee don’t worry about trying to swing the club faster invest in some impact stickers or spray and see exactly where on the face you hit the ball. After all, what can’t speak can’t lie. On another note, I think it is a real shame the BBC has lost The Open coverage.Although we have one more year to look forward to the fact this great event will no longer be on terrestrial TV can only be bad for the sport. In my opinion you can’t beat Ken Brown with his drawings, footballs and his latest addition his rubber duck! I would like to think the golfing ‘powers that be’ would have the game at heart when making such an important decision regarding the future of such a great championship but on this occasion I feel that money may have spoken.

The season is getting well under way, we have played the County Champiopnship and our County Teams are really getting in to the swing of it!! With the schools finishing for the Summer we have three main Junior Competions coming up, the Boys Championship, the U14 Champonship and the U12 Championship and the conculsion of our U14 JGT, details and results can be found on our website.
ESSEX AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP James Allan (Chelmsford) birdied the first extra hole to win the 84th Amateur Championship, at Colchester Golf Club. Allan’s birdie three putt from 12 feet was enough to beat Jay Beisser (The Rayleigh Club) in a sudden-death play-off, after the pair ended the two-day tournament tied on a six-under total of 274. Todd Clements (Braintree) finished third, one shot back on 275; Charlie Durman (Chingford) came fourth on 276, and Bradley Bawden (Rochford Hundred) was fifth with a score of 279. A total of 78 players with handicaps of 3.5 and better teed off in the hope of becoming Essex Amateur Champion, and that was whittled down to 43 players for the third round. Allan held the halfway lead after shooting the lowest round of the tournament, a five-under 65 in his second round, with Beisser a shot behind. In the fourth and final round, the ding-dong battle saw Allan take a two-shot lead, until Beisser birdied the final two holes to force an exciting play-off.
ESPLEN TROPHY The Esplen Trophy is played in conjunction with the County Championship, and is awarded to the club pair with the lowest aggregate gross score over the first two rounds. This year’s winners were Braintree, represented by Todd Clements and Elliot Fullalove who shot a gross 281. Braintree will go on to represent Essex in the English Champion Club Tournament later in the year. Overall champion Allan and fellow Chelmsford member Alasdair Plumb finished runners-up a shot further back.

JUBILEE TROPHY Braintree’s Todd Clements followed up his success by claiming the Jubilee Trophy, which is awarded to the highest scoring player who is U21 on the 1 January.
ESSEX CLUB TEAM EVENTS The Thornton Challenge Cup, Leslie F Wood Championship, Essex Senior Championship and the Norman Plum Trophy have all reached the Semi-Final stages, all result and draws are on our website. Division One of the Youth Shield is at the Quarter Final Stages , the second Division has until the 13 September before all their matches will be played.
MENS COUNTY TEAM ENGLAND GOLF SOUTH EAST GROUP QUALIFIER Essex secured third place – their best finish for five years – as 11 counties battled it out at Hendon Golf Club to decide who would represent the England Golf South Eastern Region in the English County Finals. Essex held the lead at lunchtime, thanks to James Allan (2015 Walker Cup Squad Member) shooting a one under par 69 to lead the individual performances. He was ably backed up by solid performances from Jay Beisser, Ed Fullerlove and East Berkshire Stag winner Taylor Carter. There were only four scores under par all day, and Essex were unable to maintain the standard in the afternoon as they slipped to third place behind winners Hampshire, whose six-man team dropped only seven strokes. Kent County finished second. Allan finished second overall on Level Par behind David Wickes of Sussex who scored a five-under 65 in the afternoon session to pip him by two strokes. Essex were represented by: James Allan (Chelmsford), Jay Beisser (the Rayleigh Club), Taylor Carter and Mitchel Sarling (Rochford Hundred), Ed Fullerlove and Todd Clements (Braintree), and Bobby Keeble (Abridge).

SENIORS COUNTY TEAM ESSEX V MIDDLESEX Essex put themselves back on track for the League title thanks to a comprehensive 9 ½ to ½ victory over Middlesex in the South East Group Seniors League – North match at Fulwell Golf Club. Apart from the second match, which was halved by Romford’s Steve Hazell, it was all Essex. The highlights saw Thorndon Park’s Ian Waller romp to a 7&5 victory, and Chris Aukett of Boyce Hill win 6&5. Despite the overall score, there were some close matches on a wet and overcast July day, with three points being secured on the 18th hole. SOUTH EASTERN GROUP SENIORS QUALIFIER Played at Thorpeness Golf Club on Tuesday 21th and Wednesday 22th July 2015 Thorpeness Golf Club proved to be a severe test of golf for this six man qualifier event to select which County would go though and represent the South Eastern Region in the National Finals. When you consider that the winning team was 18 over par for the two rounds you start to get an indication of just how difficult the conditions were. The event was won by BB & O who after dropping their worse score for both days finished on 78. Essex total was 817 finishing 6th of the 11 counties. The best performance by an Essex player was Mark Stones who finished on 160 (2 x 80) then Chris Aukett on 161 and Geoff King on 162. COLTS TEAM EAST BERKSHIRE STAG A par four on the first extra hole was good enough for Taylor Carter (Rochford Hundred) to win the 2015 East Berkshire Stag. In blistering hot conditions, Carter and Hampshire’s Adam Reid were tied on on-under 68 after the morning round. The other Essex players, Elliott Fullalove, Elliott Oxlade, Mitchel Sarling and Bradley Bawden were all playing steady golf, but unfortunately Sarling and Bawden struck hidden tree roots when playing shots from under trees and were forced to drop out during the early afternoon. Taylor was in the first group and carded a 74 in the afternoon for a day’s score of 141 – which was matched by Reid.
U18 TEAM SOUTH EAST GROUP – COUNTY QUALIFYING Essex were unable to defend the South of England title they won last year, but came a creditable third at Porters Park Golf Club. The format sees the top five out of six scores taken from both the morning and afternoon rounds, and Essex were joint leaders at 13-over with Hampshire and Middlesex at the lunch interval, thanks to solid rounds from Callum Hilton (71), Jack Dyer and Bailee Curran (72). Essex fell away as their team tired in the afternoon, despite good rounds again from Curran who shot a one-under 70, Dyer (73) and Hilton (74). A total of 35-over meant Essex finished two shots behind second place Sussex and eight behind winners Hampshire. Two Essex boys finished in the individual top 10 – Dyer on 8-over and second-placed Curran on 2-over. Team: Louis Lazarus (Captain ), Bailee Curran, Jack Dyer, Callum Hilton, Callum Pipe and Josh Hickling. Reserve: Ryan Tattan.

ESSEX V HERTS & MIDDLESEX The triangular tournament will go to the wire and be decided in the final event at Knebworth, as Essex were left tied on six points with Herts after the round at Enfield Golf Club. Bailee Curran and Callum Hilton won their two 18hole matchplay matches with Josh Hickling winning one and halving the other. Essex scored two points against Middlesex thanks to five wins out of eight. Against Hertfordshire Essex won two and halved three to give their opponents two points. Essex were represented by: Louis Lazarus (Captain), Bailee Curran, Callum Pipe, Jack Dyer, Callum Hilton, Harrison Mosley, Josh Hickling, and Will Percival.
U16 TEAM U16 V KENT & SURREY The season’s opening match against Kent and Surrey was at the very agreeable Kings Hill Golf Club in West Malling. Leading from the front Captain Ben Rendell captured three of his four points beating the Kent Captain and halving with his Surrey counterpart. Ryan Tattan negotiated the course in around par and yet lost to his Kent opponent who finished over par. No one said golf was fair. By way of consolation he beat his Surrey opponent well, which on the day was one of Surrey’s rare losses. Performance of the day came from Josh Read who beat his opponents having passed through the turn down in both matches. The Kent and Essex teams were closely matched, but as the result shows Surrey with their greater resources again proved to be the superior force and won well. Despite this defeat the Essex boys performed creditably with a number of matches only being decided on the seventeenth and eighteenth holes.

ongratulations to our eight quarter finalists – all winners of their respective Leagues and well on the way to the final! To note specifically, by the time of publication we will have confirmed SemiFinalists on the website. Before we get to that, however, I would like to pass my appreciation and thanks to ALL participating clubs in the 2015 Jubilee Cup! The comments we receive in via email and phone, and written on the bottom of the result sheet (regardless of the match result!) are universally positive, and is a testament to the regard Essex midhandicappers hold the competition. Please keep up the great support! Congratulations to Stapleford Abbotts, Crondon Park, Bentley, The Essex, Colchester, Harwich and Dovercourt, Benton Hall and Forrester Park for some excellent golf to become our 2015 Quarter Finalists. What is more, thank you so much to the
excellent folk at Forrester Park, Benton Hall, The Essex & Stapleford Abbotts for acting as neutral venues for our QFs that will be played by 2nd August 2015. Brilliant results for the teams, but what about individual players? Well with only three potential matches left to complete the Order of Merit tables are also really hotting up. In the Singles OOM we have three players from The Warren and Crondon Park having won four games out of four with maximum points, but differing hole difference. Congratulations to12 and 13 handicappers Neil Manley,Tony Efreme & Brian English for topping this chart, but nipping just behind them with some potential is Kevin Maling from Stapleford Abbotts, Jeff Woodgate from Harwich & Dovercourt, and Kevin Kimber from Benton Hall. Keep up the good work guys, as there are a number of individuals below you still well within range of becoming our Singles Order of Merit champion 2015. All could change in the next QUARTER FINAL ONE round so please take a view at Stapleford Abbotts v Crondon Park www.jubileecup.com/ matches2015/playsing.htm Venue: Forrester Park Similarly, in the Pairs OOM we Date: Sunday 26th July 2015 have a number of players on full QUARTER FINAL TWO marks from teams hot in contention at the Quarter Final stage. David Bentley v The Essex Norris from Bentley currently rules Venue: Benton Hall the roost on hole difference behind Date: Sunday 2nd August 2015 team mate Kevin Lovesy, with Neil Miller and Chris Swanson from The QUARTER FINAL THREE Essex and Rob Tubb from Stapleford Colchester v Harwich & Dovercourt Abbots. Great League result from Venue: The Essex Harry Yearcing from PlayGolf Date: Sunday 2nd August 2015 Colchester who sadly cannot now better his position – but well done. QUARTER FINAL FOUR Three players from Colchester and Benton Hall v Forrester Park one from the Bentley also still nipping at the heels also currently so this Venue: Stapleford Abbotts could have changed significantly by Date: Sunday 26th July 2015 the time this is published. the latest at www.jubileecup.com/ matches2015/playdoub.htm The Road to the Final is shown below, so check the latest results on our website www.jubileecup.com/ matches2015/qsf_sheet_2015.html To digress importantly for a little while, I would also like to reflect upon a great supporter of our competition. Peter McKay, former Colne Valley Jubilee Cup Captain, recently had his second memorial event after very sadly passing away in 2014. He is very much remembered by the Committee and I, nervously managing some really really tense Jubilee Cup moments, and always with great humour. Sadly, we are also remembering Alan Hemple from Stock Brook Manor who died in May 2015, and who was remembered by outgoing SBM Jubilee Captain Andy Picton, whose team dedicated their Round Four match with The Rayleigh Club to Allan. A fitting tribute from Andy, on his last Jubilee match as Captain, to Allan, his opposition and the competition showing the spirit we play in: “I can’t think of a better bunch of blokes to have shared both occasions with. Thanks to all who have organised, arranged and participated in this fantastic competition, but mostly thanks go to Dave Tyrrell and members of The Rayleigh Club for their fantastic spirit and the way they approach the game.” We have had some great golf played over the past 4 months and have some more yet to play. Please note for all the rounds, you can see all the details down to individual player v player or 4BBB games by checking details on the website. To do this, go to the URL above, hover over the “Results & Tables” button underneath our sponsor’s banner for Seabrook Warehousing, and choose “2015 Results & Tables”. Click into the Round you wish to see, find the match you wish to review and then click “Show Match” (on right hand side of the listed match). This will bring up the results cards showing all singles and pairs match results. Best regards Phil - 43 -

THE OTHER
“KING” IN GOLF H
aving just returned from the Open where I was privileged to watch the Champions Challenge which was won by the “King” Arnold Palmer and his team. I decided to write this article after watching one of the top players practicing his bunker shots during the practice days. The bunker shot can strike the fear into the club golfer especially after seeing some of the deep riveted pot bunkers at St Andrews! However the bunker shot actually requires less precision than a short pitch shot from a tight lie, but the knowledge of how to play them is paramount. A typical links style pot bunker with a steep riveted face, one of the most famous is the Roadhole, on the 17th at St Andrews, which claims
many famous victims at each Open Championship.
One key component is to understand where and what the clubface is doing at the time of impact with the golf ball? This is particularly relevant to the full swing too, rather than focusing upon too many body

movements which is backed up by research within Motor skill acquisition. The images below show two completely different type of shots played by Martin Kaymer who is able to control the trajectory, distance, spin and roll of the ball.

Splash shot
Lower running bunker shot The first image shows how Martin Kaymer is maintaining or even increasing the degree of loft during this shot which is used when the ball is close to the face or the requirement is to stop the ball with maximum loft. The primary difference is the position of the clubface, so instead of letting the technical elements control you, try shifting you focus to the other King of golf ... the Clubface. - 47 -

Creating More Consistency in Your Short Game by Using a Selection of Clubs W
hen playing a chip or a pitch on to a green, always try to land the ball on the first 2 yards of the green and allow the trajectory of the shot to roll the ball the appropriate distance to the hole. This will help create more consistency because it will allow you to have a shorter backswing, meaning fewer things can go wrong for you. When accessing your shot imagine throwing a ball underarm and allowing it to land on the first 2 yards of the green, but stopping near the hole. Then find a club with the correct loft that will create a similar trajectory to the image you just pictured in your head. To give you a rough guide: The sand/pitching wedge will roughly carry halfway and roll the other half. (50/50) The 9 iron will carry a third of the way and roll two-thirds to the target. (33/66) The 7 iron will carry a quarter of the distance and role the rest of the way to the target. (25/75) As shown in the diagram below.
Your technique shouldn’t change for each shot – what will change is the result, i.e. you’ll experience a higher or lower trajectory with less or more roll on the ball. Following my last article in the Essex Golfer June issue, be aware the effect that a slope can have on the trajectory of a ball. When playing uphill, the ball will fly higher so a 9 iron may create the same effect as a sand wedge played from a flat lie. And when playing downhill a 9 iron may create the same trajectory as a 7 iron from a flat lie (Photo 2). Please see photographs below.

Lily May Holds Her Nerve to Win U14 Crown E
ssex golfer Lily May Humphreys held her nerve through a tight showdown to win the English U14 girls’ open championship at Royal Cromer. The 13-year-old from Channels (image © Leaderboard Photography) had started the final round with a two-shot lead and at one stage, helped by two birdies and an eagle in the first four holes, she extended her advantage to five shots. But her playing partner, Mimi Rhodes, gradually pulled her back and after she birdied the 16th, the two girls were level. Both parred the 17th before Humphreys claimed the title on the 18th with a six, to win by a shot. She finished the championship on five-over par while Rhodes, who is based in Spain, was runnerup for the second year in a row. Third place was taken by Caitlin Whitehead (Kendal) on eight over. “I just wanted to try and do my best and see how I could do. I feel so proud for my mum and dad because they’ve really helped me along, helped me to practice and to improve my game,” said Humphreys, who is also the Essex girls’ champion.
She played in this championship last year and came 10th. “I didn’t think I could improve so much that I’d be able to come from 10th to win,” she added. Now, having tested herself, Humphreys plans to move up to U16 level next year. pr@englandgolf.org

Great Win For Parma & Mike
olchester Golf Club held the Cant Cup and just creeping ahead of the field to win were Parma and Mike Ellis. Their score of 68 in the foursome's medal competition was just half a point ahead of Jo Mager and John Redden, last year’s winners of this competition. Playing off handicaps of 15 and 17 respectively, the Ellis’s are a tough nut to crack in most circumstances but on their day they are uncrackable. Their card on close inspection shows steady golf with a birdie on the tough par three 13th balanced by a double bogey on the par five 9th. But it was again the par threes which swung the competition in their favour being just one over par on the four holes. Mager (20) and Redden (7) were five over par on the par threes and although their play on the longer holes was made easier by their longer hitting they were just not able to prise any more from their card. Two shots behind them and in third place were Jane and Andrew Jones (18&23) who had a steady
round just the half a point above par for the course. Alison Claire (23) and Tom Rothery took fourth spot with a nett 72.

Swing Technology at Colchester Golf Club C
olchester Golf Club has taken the opportunity during the recent Pro-Shop refurbishment to install Club Head Measurement Technology, otherwise known as a Swing Studio. Many golfers have seen the images on Sky Sports with golf pundits illustrating their points by actually playing shots on a simulator – this equipment is similar.
It has been fitted to assisting the professional team in coaching and custom fitting of golf clubs. Both of the Club’s pros, Mark Baker and Chris Cutchie are fully qualified PGA professionals and welcome the addition of this facility. Chris Cutchie said, “I was amazed when I first tried the equipment, it is the most accurate and complete club head analysis technology available today.
Baker added, “That using this equipment, we can instantly see critical data such as club head speed, horizontal club path, dynamic loft and lie even impact location with an accuracy not available anywhere else. This along with the ability, to play simulations of top courses such as Royal Troon or Medinah will make the process a lot of fun” Club members have done practically all the work in both the refurbishment of the Pro-Shop, and the fitting of the Swing Studio and particular thanks go to Trevor Cock and Vic Pomphrett ably assisted by the Captain, John Williams, Roger Robertson, Dave Blackmore and Terry Meads. All the equipment in the Swing Studio is now up and running and will save golfers who buy equipment from the club long journeys to either Titleist or Ping for club fittings. After a particularly bad round one member who we encouraged to use the Swing Studio said “I was amazed as to the clarity it provided showing in 10 to 20 balls exactly the issue I had with the swing path. It immediately gives our 2 professionals the information that you could never get on a practice ground. I may have been sceptical before but I am now looking forward to using the swing centre as part of improving my game. It’s a bit like having an MOT ... Fixing the problem is step 2.” Golfers in the area can now be safe in the knowledge, a remedial lesson and the right fitting equipment is available at Colchester Golf Club.

Cup Wins For Beverly and Maureen
Beverly Parker.
Maureen Devenish.
I
Maureen Devenish’s achievement in winning the Angel Cup was equally stunning. Returning 42 points on the course set out to be as quirky as possible her scoring was a reflection of the hard work she has put into her golf in recent months. There were 150 members, playing in two shotgun starts making this the largest field of the year. With the dry weather the course is now running long but the greens are receptive, true and in as good a condition as ever. Devenish’s first place with 42 points was not clear of the field as Jan Murray (27) was breathing down her neck with 41 points and Barbara Hemmings (31) hot on their heels with 40 points.
t was ladies all the way at Colchester Golf Club, Beverley Parker crushed the opposition in a stableford competition by six points, and Maureen Devenish returned 41 points to win the Angel Cup, beating a mixed field of 150 members with the second and third places also taken up by ladies. Over the past few months, Parker has been there or thereabouts in most competitions and through regular play her handicap has slowly been trying to catch up with her ability. Now it has, playing off 23 in this competition she is now down to 19. Her golf was excellent making, mostly bogeys she threw in four pars and a couple of birdies to construct an outstanding score.

Chelmsfords Delight
J
ames Allan of Chelmsford is the Essex Amateur Champion for 2015! The most prestigious event on the county amateur calendar was held at Colchester Golf Club to celebrate CGC member Mike Hart’s position as Essex Golf Union President this year. Played over two days and 72 holes, the best amateur golfers in Essex did battle. Following rounds of 72 and a fantastic 65, Allan, playing off +4), led at halfway on -3 where the 78 strong field was reduced to 43 for Sunday’s final 36 holes. He was closely followed by Jay Beisser (The Rayleigh Club) and C h a r l i e D u r m a n (Chingford) who were -2. Among those at -1 and just 2 off the lead was Colchester’s own Ben David, looking to continue his good form having finished joint 6th in the Faldo Series South Championship earlier in the week. Sunday morning saw torrential rain, which proved too much for some challengers. Beisser’s excellent round of 67 saw him leap to -5, meaning he led by 2 shots from Allan, who posted a level par 70. Todd Clements of Braintree roared into contention with a superb closing round of 66 moving him to -5. Beisser produced another solid round of 69 to move to -6 meaning Allan had to produce something special. His first 17 holes was sublime, yielding 4 birdies and 13 pars but a wobble on the 18th led to a bogey, a score of 67 and meant he too finished on -6. The resulting playoff, watched a large crowd, was short as an Allan birdie on the 1st gave him the title and capped off a superb weekend’s golf. Ben David finished tied for 5th on -1 following a final round of 68, which was hugely impressive. Fellow member George Whitbread also did very well, ending up tied 14th on +6.
S
ome 68 past and present Lady Captains from 32 clubs across the County played in the Society of Essex Lady Captains 2nd Summer Meeting at Woolston Manor in mid-July. Although it was a warm day, there were a few showers to dampen the enthusiasm. In the conditions, the ladies found the course played long and by the end of the round, most of them had plenty of opportunities to practice their bunker shots! The scores were consequently, relatively low for the 4BBB competition off full handicap. The Society days are not just about playing your best golf, although it is always encouraging when you go home with a prize or the Trophy! Rather the days are more about meeting, playing and socialising with other ladies who have had the honour and privilege to be Lady Captain at their golf club.
The ladies finished off their day with a lovely evening meal before the presentation of prizes by Jan Collier Lady President of the Society and Mary-Ann DeCruz Lady Captain of Woolston Manor. As is often the case the majority of the prizes were decided on count back with 6 pairs finishing on 33 to 35 points. In third place with 34 points, ocb were Linda Woods (Royal Epping) and Jenny Frost (Maldon), 2nd with 35 points ocb were Pennie Lipscomb (The Warren) and Sharon Glover (Brentwood). In first place and winners of the Joyce Layland Cup were Maggie Stevenson (formerly of North Weald) and Margaret Gillam (Gosfield Lake). Grateful thanks to Woolston Manor for hosting the event and Mary-Ann DeCruz for her help.

On the Order of Merit, Darren Charlton Bell, 28, is all set to move his golf academy from (Dunstable Downs) retains his lead, albeit a a Middlesex base to Surbiton Golf Studio. How SHARP
Are You For Golf? D
uring the coming weeks and particularly Practice and Tournaments, aim to analyse your game. Are you clear headed and mentally focused at hole 14 as you are when you tee off? For optimal tournament performance, blood sugar (blood glucose) needs to remain as stable as possible to supply constant fuel to your brain. Carbohydrate based food sources feed your brain during events, as do essential fats e.g. nuts and cereal bars. Therefore, prep early and start with an optimal breakfast 1.5-2 hours before play: A mixed nutrient meal of complex carbohydrates and good quality protein would be ideal. Examples include wholemeal/granary toast with scrambled egg and smoked salmon, porridge with added berries and flaked almonds or walnut pieces, or muesli with mixed nuts and dried fruits with semi-skimmed or soya milk. Couple this with a large glass of fruit juice (not from concentrate), or homemade smoothie. Delicious! During the early stages of play and midplay, opt for slow release foods e.g. oat based cereal bars, almonds (excellent for essential fats/protein and blood sugar), wholemeal roll with tuna, ham or
chicken, or a couple of bites of a mixed protein/carbohydrate combined bar, or quite simply a banana ... packed full of golf goodness! (NB Avoid chocolate as this would divert energy to the gut due to the high fat content, rather than to your working muscles) In the latter stages, or if blood sugar levels drop, Jaffa cakes or a few jelly beans/jelly babies to elevate blood sugar would increase concentration and focus. GOLDEN RULES ... Hydration is KEY, followed by regular fuelling pre and during events and tournaments. A mixed nutrient meal to start, then slow release carbohydrates during the round. If blood glucose levels plummet use Jaffa cakes or jelly babies to elevate blood sugar and lift performace! ENJOY!

Strengthen
he back is a highly complex set of musculature. Comprised of many small deep muscles that must be strengthened to achieve optimal postural and core stability. The intricate anatomy of the back is to provide support for the head and trunk of the body, strength in the trunk of the body, as well as a great deal of flexibility and movement. Within my programmes I aim to strengthen not just the lower back but the upper back too. When you hear of a bad back it's usually at the bottom of the back ... however, it can be the upper back/neck that is causing the lower back pain. Posture when looking at back pain must be adjusted and trained into alignment. There are a few exercises that I love using to strengthen the back. The first one is the horse stance, not only does this train and strengthen the
Your Back
lower Abdominals but also strengthens the deep muscles of the back including themultifidus ... this muscle provides support to the spine so is very important to train! Another exercise I use is the prone cobra. This is one of my favourites for strengthening the back musculature. There are so many benefits to this exercise, most important in my eyes is postural ... the prone cobra strengthens and trains the small, tiny muscles In the upper back helping to draw the shoulders back and down into optimal posture. Look up these exercises and the techniques and give them a go. In part 4 I will discuss the GLUTES!! Hooray my favourite topic, I will discuss how a strong, fully functioning gluteus maximus can improve your POWER!

Families Enjoy HSBC Open Hour at Three Rivers
S
arah Bennett PGA Fellow Professional at Three Rivers Golf Club was invited to host #AnyonesGame the week of the Open. The family coaching and facility initiative was supported by GolfRoots and sponsored by HSBC, which was introduced to drive interest during the 144th Open at St Andrews. Sarah designed games and coaching activities for the group for the hour which enabled the children to interact and see experience putting for the first time, with one parent saying, the children were “tick tocking” all afternoon!!! A sign of enjoyment each participant was given a t-shirt and a hat with all 6 juniors new to the game. Everyone enjoyed the hour and was the perfect opportunity to talk about golf. “Six youngsters attended the hour which was promoted via the Open and the HSBC Golf Zone. The ages ranged from 4yrs-14yrs which shows the diversity of those wishing to play or become involved with the sport” I would like to Thank our junior organiser Ruth Collins, who I put through our first L1 courses 6 years ago for her assistance. It is the volunteers within the clubs and county who give up their time
to help where required. I hope this can become an annual event as it will certainly inspire youngsters to take up the game and enjoy the golf.
