SkyCaddie’s 3-in-1 LINX GT Puts Game Tracking on Your Wrist
S
kyCaddie’s new top-of-the-range GPS watch, the SkyCaddie® LINX GT, adds an innovative game-tracking element to unmatched GPS accuracy when integrated with the SkyCaddie Mobile GPS App, to produce the world’s most powerful wrist-mounted golf information system, and an amazing 3-in-1 features set. Leveraging the latest in golf technology, the SkyCaddie LINX GT Watch differentiates SkyCaddie from the GPS watch competition, the golf game-tracker competition, and the golf app competition, combining all three into one harmonious, ‘best of everything’ solution. The core function of the SkyCaddie LINX GT is to act as a standalone GPS watch. Like all of the brand’s products it features Skycaddie’s best-in-class TrueGound® Course Maps – each exclusively created and regularly updated on foot by trained golf course mappers using professional surveying equipment – to provide you with distances you can trust with complete, shot-saving confidence. SkyCaddie LINX GT gives quick distances on your wrist to 35,000 preloaded and exclusive golf course maps worldwide. Using golf ’s only ground-corrected precision course maps, the SkyCaddie LINX GT provides dynamic distances from wherever your ball lies to the Front, Centre and Back of every green in SkyCaddie’s database, plus quarterly course updates, all for no additional annual fees. And when you need to see more information than the compact wrist display can provide, the SkyCaddie LINX GT gives you a better view of what’s ahead by pairing wirelessly with the SkyCaddie Mobile GPS App to provide stunning, expanded views on your phone.
On these occasions the SkyCaddie Mobile GPS App uses the SkyCaddie LINX GT’s powerful Truepoint® GPS engine to stay synchronised on the same course, same hole and precise location, delivering the entire hole in stunning HD eagle’s eye graphics on your smart phone with the accuracy of a SkyCaddie. Simply tap the mobile screen to measure to any point on the hole and get critical information you need to layup in front of, or carry, hazards. Or simply pinch and zoom HoleVue to seamlessly reveal up to 40 georeferenced targets. But the SkyCaddie LINX GT is so much more than just a GPS watch. It is also golf ’s first rangefinder to include a built-in shot tracking system which, when combined with SkyCaddie SmartTag™ club tags, allows golfers to track the club, location and distance of each shot. SkyCaddie LINX GT also offers an AutoSwing option, which detects when and where you swing so you never miss a shot even if you forget to tag. With the SkyCaddie LINX GT, each captured shot is synchronised automatically in real time with the SkyGolf 360 Cloud, avoiding the need to connect to a computer after the round. This means that the data from your round of golf is immediately available for sharing with friends, family or your golf professional either in real time, or straight after the round. “SkyCaddie LINX GT users can discover how far they hit every club in the bag in real-world situations – as opposed to on the range, when the pressure is off. And they can also rely, of course, on golf ’s most accurate GPS data combined with golf ’s most vivid rangefinder GPS app, to give them distances and views they can trust 100%.” www.skycaddie.co.uk

Chelmsford Golf Club We Salute You
Hilary Beck and Les Cutbush presenting Sue Randall with a cheque for £5000 from Chelmsford golf Club.
W
hen Chelmsford Golf Club Ladies captain, Hilary, heard Sue Randall talk about the David Randall Foundation she immediately knew that this was the charity that she wanted to support through her captaincy year. Joining forces with Men’s captain, Les, they nominated the David Randall Foundation as their charity of the year and have gone on to raise a terrific £5000 to support the work of the Foundation. Thanks go out to all the Chelmsford Golf Club members who have so generously supported a range of fundraising activities organised by Hilary and Les. This significant sum of money will allow the Foundation to provide many ‘good days’ for our applicants and create lasting memories for their families and friends.
About David Randall Foundation Our Objectives: n To support people who demonstrate exceptional dedication and passion in pursuing their ambitions in sport or music but may be held back by their financial situation. n To support people with life limiting illnesses for whom extra support would give opportunities to enjoy life to the full for as long as possible. The David Randall Foundation was conceived by members of Maldon Cricket Club in February 2012 when David Randall (aged 27), a member of the club since the age of 6, was diagnosed as having terminal cancer. www.davidrandallfoundation.org

Body Position or Motion at Impact? 1
W
2
3
e often talk in terms of positions through the swing, but they are only snap shots in time, in reality, the swing is constantly in motion, and this is very important to remember when we talk about the body at impact. One of the primary causes of poor club control is the body stopping or stalling at impact, if I can remind you of the dynamic sequence of the downswing. The body rotates, which in turn pulls the arms, which in turn pull the club and the clubhead is the last to arrive. If the body does not continue to rotate the arms and club will freewheel past impact, and 4 poor club control will result. This is demonstrated in Picture 1. To help you gain a sense of
the correct motion through impact take the club in just your right hand, if it feels a little too heavy turn it upside down and grip the club head. Now allow the club to swing back and through as the swing sequence in Pictures 2, 3 and 4 demonstrate, you will notice in Picture 3, I am almost side onto the ball and my body continues to turn all the way to Picture 4. Of course when you re-apply your left arm you will not be quite as side on at impact Picture 5 but you must keep feeling the sensation that your body is permanently moving through the hitting zone at the bottom of the swing. 5 Next issue swing plane.
Happy Golfing Gary

England U16s Win Praise for Gritty Fightback E
ngland lost to Spain in the annual U16 mixed international, but came home with their heads high after a brave fightback. Spain’s youngsters got off to a fast start and at the end of the first day’s play at their National Golf Centre they were leading 9.5-2.5 after the four foursomes and eight singles.
they arrived on the practice range before the green staff on day two – and the preparation served them well. The England players shared the morning foursomes 2-2, despite some tricky pin positions, with wins from the partnerships of Mimi Rhodes and Ebonie Lewis (2up) and from Barclay Brown and Charlie Daughtrey (3/2). The team picked up the momentum in the afternoon with five wins in the eight singles. Rhodes and Daughtry both won again in the afternoon – each by one hole – while the other points were contributed by Lily May Humphreys (6/5), Annabell Fuller (5/3) and Harry Goddard 2/1. Matt Stables is Head Coach of Four Shots Lower Academy at Rivenhall Oaks Golf Centre and A PGA Advanced Professional. Our Aim is to improve your scores by 4 shots over the next 12 months by giving you some simple proven techniques on all parts of your game to make a real difference to your game. We will make a plan suited to you to and your current ability to improve your game and increase your confidence and fun you have on the course. www.MattStablesGolf.com
INTRODUCING THE FOUR SHOTS LOWER ACADEMY AT RIVENHALL OAKS.
SO WHY FOUR SHOTS LOWER? After a number of years coaching what I have discovered I really want to help a player improve their scores and work with them to see a player enjoy the game more. Having worked with numerous players what I have found 4 shots is achievable for most with a modest amount of application and a clear plan over a 12 month period. SO WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO GO 4 SHOTS LOWER? HOW MANY TIMES DO YOU HAVE TO PLAY? It takes some commitment but you will need to play over 40 times per year on the course to see this improvement. If you play 9 holes or play on the Acorns course this counts as well.
If you can play and practice what we have covered in the lessons we are confident we can help you hit your target in the next 12 months but maybe sooner. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU HAVE IMPROVED YOUR GAME BY 4 SHOTS? We get on and work on getting another 4 shots better. We want to keep improving your game!! HOW OFTEN WILL I HAVE TO WORK WITH MY COACH? COULD YOUR EQUIPMENT BE CAUSING YOU ISSUES? PART 2 – THE BALL
I
n the March 2016 Essex Golfer I discussed about the Putter. In this article I want to tell you about the ball! How many times have you hit a putt and it has fallen in when you least expected it too or you thought you had holed the putt and somehow it missed? Well the helper or culprit could potentially have been the ball itself. Golf balls generally have a light side and a heavy side like in Crown Green Bowls, but obviously not an excessive amount. I have been testing out balls in a salt water solution and have found that most balls return to the same point with the light side at the top just above the solution. In testing, the balanced golf ball rolls end over end and this has been proven by others trying this. If the ball runs on a truer course then potentially you could hole more putts and eliminate a potential issue. Why discuss this? We like to blame our Putter,
The Green or Ourselves for a missed putt, but who blames the ball? Well very few, because we think that it should be perfect. All golf balls are mass produced and how can the manufacturers get the line on the ball perfectly on the balance line during this process. However, I am offering a complete and total service to all golfers who want to eliminate the variables in their Putting. The variables being;Yourself, The Green and Your Equipment. Once we reduce the variables, with better understanding of what we should be doing and knowing our equipment is more suited to us and works for us, we are more than likely to get results which help us to perform and in turn help our Mind to be less confused. If you would like to see me on an individual lesson or would like to make a group seminar then please contact me.You never know, it could just make a difference! IT’S TIME TO LET THE LOFT GO ...
I
f you asked me five years ago regarding iron loft I would have told you that the reason that irons were going further was that all golf club designers were making the loft of irons stronger - basically turning a seven iron into a six iron etc. Although that was true then it is not now the case due to the advancement in club face materials and design characteristics. In fact looking back iron loft was always one of the more controversial components of iron design. So, is iron loft still a major design attribute? In my opinion it has dropped down the priority list and is now overshadowed by materials and head construction. After all, loft is only a number and it's not the number you put on your scorecard. So, what’s changed? Mainly it’s the speed the ball comes off the face, lighter thinner faces have an almost ‘trampoline’ effect, harder materials help increase ball speed but the best part is they are consistently faster across the face - even on off centre strikes. As I write this one of the major golf companies
are launching a marketing campaign based around ‘Love Your Mis-Hits’.This autumn will see face slots and hybrid technology come to irons for the first time, another big advancement in iron advancement. Another aspect to the ‘then’ and ‘now’ of iron loft is that many moons ago long irons were standard issue, now many golfers would not even contemplate a three iron - so the hardest irons to hit have disappeared to clear the way for distance ‘combos’ of hybrids and irons. Does it really matter if a six hybrid rather than a six iron lands close to the hole? After all, it’s not cheating - it’s totally legal! Interestingly, I have recently tested some of the newer designs of irons and adjusted the heads to what is seen as more traditional lofts and due to the fact the ball came off the face faster the shots went much higher with a much weaker ball flight - the new 'stronger' iron lofts are necessary due to the increased ball speed. At the end of the day everything moves on, not always for the better, but in this case I think it's the way forward.

A Message from the President, 2016 I
am delighted and honoured to be in my second year of two, serving as president of the Essex Golf Union. I have been an active member of the union executive and board of directors for around fifteen years. Most of my time has been devoted to grass roots and player development, having managed county boy’s teams of all age groups. I would like to thank all my fellow board members, other county officials and the many players representing county and competing in county events for their support. This year we welcome six new members to our sixteen man board of directors, and already they are getting stuck in to the workload. One of our new ideas for this year is to set up a direct line of contact for all 77 affiliated clubs to a board member, by allocating board members four to five clubs to maintain visibility and regular communications with. This activity should commence during the second half of this year. Last year was another good year for our county teams, with the colts winning their league and the county team being runners up in the SE Group league. We thank our county team shirt sponsors Clarkson’s Insurance and are delighted that they have renewed the county shirty sponsorship for another year. In junior golf our county teams continue to perform well and our commitment and investment in coaching

continues. The under 14 community tour goes from strength to strength and we are ever grateful to our Tour sponsors the Norman Garon Trust, who have renewed their sponsorship for another year. This year the tour includes ten fixtures and will be expanded to include under twelve age group and girls. So now boys and girls of all ages under fourteen are welcome with or without golf handicaps. We did reintroduce the “Player of the Year” trophy last year and it was awarded to James Allan (Chelmsford). James has represented our county at all levels as junior and adult, he won our county championship last year and among many accolades was second in the England amateur order of merit. We wish him well in his new career as a professional golfer in 2016. Sadly we lost our dear friend, board member and team manager for the county seniors team John McInerney following a long fight with cancer. John’s sense of humour was second to none and he will be greatly missed. I have already stated that during my presidency I am determined not to interfere with our core business of championships and matches as it all runs very smoothly. I do feel that we as a county union have a responsibility to help and support clubs in efforts to encourage new club members into our game. One highlight last year was the county conference, the theme being “Growing Golf in Essex” more than forty affiliated clubs attended and I understand that many new ideas have been adopted by clubs determined to stop the decline in club membership. We are very grateful to presenters at the event, including Alan Walker PGA Master Professional and club proprietor, Martin Corck (The Warren), David Joy then CEO England Golf and Helen Tartellin our Essex County Development Officer. 2016 Golf season is now well under way. Jack Dyer our county junior captain won the first championship of the year, the Keating Trophy at Abridge in April. Apart from the seniors, our Team Management and Player Development Committee remain unchanged. Our county teams have played friendlies and are now preparing for their league fixtures. In junior golf the under 18 SE Group league introduced in 2015 has worked well and we are looking forward in the future to some similar restructuring of SE Group Leagues for all age groupings and all eleven counties, this should reduce travel time for away fixtures. Our county senior’s team is under new team management with Steve Hazell (Romford) taking the helm; Steve is currently seeking new players into the county senior’s squad. Please see our website. One major change at the start of this year was the resignation of Lynda Cartwright as County Secretary and I would like to thank Lynda for her hard work and commitment to our county golf union over recent years. We have been fortunate in recruiting Lynda’s replacement with Nick McEvoy taking over, and already Nick is proving to be a very good appointment. Nick has a wealth of experience in business practice and golf administration and we all wish him well in this venture. In February 2017 I expect to pass the presidential baton to Roger Walmsley of Upminster, Roger has experienced many years operating at both county and national golf administration and I wish him well. Meanwhile I look forward to meeting many Essex club golfers at the many venues that I have the privilege of attending through 2016. Mike Hart May 2016

Young Guns See Essex Through in Close Encounter at Sheerness Golf Club Essex Played the Kent Golf Union in the Annual County Trials friendly at the beautifully presented Sheerness GC in Kent. Both teams received a warm welcome from the Club Officials who were on hand very early in the morning to meet and greet the teams. Kent fielded five of the players who represented them against us in the Daily Telegraph Final last October so the match was always going to be a tough encounter. Essex once again performed strongly in the morning foursomes with excellent victories in the top two matches for Jay Biesser & Jack Dyer and Andy May & Mitchel Sarling backed up by the anchor foursomes of Jordan Wallace & Jamie Richards closing out with a handsome 5&4 victory to secure a 3-2 lunchtime lead. The top two encounters produced scintillating golf from both sides with the matches being a lot closer than the results suggest. CONTINUED OVERLEAF - 41 -

In the afternoon Essex, although loading the order of play with its strength at the top, lost three of the first four singles albeit by close margins which put a worrying complexion on the match. However after steep learning curves in the morning, two of our young stars of the future, Under 16’s Team Captain Harry Moncur and Under 18 team member Will Percival had magnificent victories of 2&1 and 3&2 respectively showing great talent and maturity under pressure and forming the basis for the fight back. This was backed up by John Hanrahan’s excellent 5&4 victory leaving Jordan Wallace as our last man on the course against Mike Bush. What closing drama there was with Jordan surrendering a 2 up with three to play lead against a birdie, par combination from his opponent only to prevail down the last hole with a cool par four in a pressure situation made even more so by the spectators situated around the green. This fine victory gives Essex a 100% record so far this season and go into the Eastern Counties Foursomes at Seacroft GC, Skegness, on 14th & 15th May with every intention of improving on last year’s runner up position. Essex were represented on this occasion by:Andy May (Boyce Hill GC), Jay Biesser (The Rayleigh Club), Jack Dyer (Rochford 100 GC), Jordan Wallace (Abridge GC), Mitchel Sarling (Boyce Hill GC), John Hanrahan (Boyce Hill GC), Jamie Richards (Abridge GC), Harry Moncur (Langdon Hills GC), Will Percival (Orsett GC), Ryan Tattan (Chelmsford GC) Report by John Peters County Team Manager

As for many years this Scratch Foursomes League Tournament was hosted on the magnificent Seacroft Golf Club Links at Skegness in Lincolnshire. The course looking resplendent with beautiful fairways and greens however was subject to brutal North Easterly winds and cold overcast conditions on Saturday, the first day of the tournament. Essex with a mixed team of “probable’s & possible’s” struggled all day with their distance control down wind, firing through many greens and failing to get “up & down” to save par leading to early deficits, which proved too difficult to recover. So at the end of Day One Essex had only accrued 6 points and alongside other pre tournament favourites Lincolnshire were well off the pace. Andy May and Mitchel Sarling being our best pair winning 2.5 points. Day one had turned out to favour the generally considered weaker counties with Leicester leading the way closely followed by Suffolk, Norfolk & Cambridgeshire. Day Two provided better fortunes for Essex with several notable performances. Although still windy the strength had abated and the sun was shining. Essex were determined to make up for the disappointment of Saturday and secured 8 points from a possible 10 in the morning beating both Norfolk & BBO 4-1. This gave Essex a platform to strike for 3rd or 4th place overall. The afternoon session provided 6.5 points and helped the County to a respectable 4th place finish with 20.5 points, 7.5 behind winners Leicestershire and One point behind 3rd placed Suffolk. Our overall top point’s scorers for the weekend were Andy May & Mitchel Sarling 7 points, Taylor Carter & Bobby Keeble 5.5 points with Jay Biesser & John Hanrahan and Callum Pipe & Scott Hudson with 3 points each. Congratulations to Leicestershire who were worthy winners and to Seacroft GC and the organisers who made this another memorable event. Team was: Andy May, Mitchel Sarling & John Hanrahan (Boyce Hill), Taylor Carter & Jack Dyer (Rochford 100), Bobby Keeble, Jordan Wallace & Jamie Richards (Abridge), Callum Pipe (Braintree), Scott Hudson (Warren) and Jay Biesser (The Rayleigh G&C). Under 18 Match Report
E SSE X v HERT S v M IDD LESE X Pinner Golf Club, Middlesex – Sunday 8th May 2016 Pinner Hill is a parkland course, with a hilly terrain, a number of blind holes, with dog legs and many trees. Winter rules were in place. Essex had three of their players away on England Regional Coaching. Fortunately we were able to call upon the services of 2 U16 players, Michael Gilbert and Harry Moncur.
The format was 18 holes triangular match play. Essex were led off by U18 County Captain Jack Dyer, with for him an usual hooky drive, but everyone was confident that Jack would soon settle down. His Herts opponent was Kush Patel, their No 1 player. Jack indeed did settle down, winning his match against Herts 4&2 & against Middlesex 6&4. This was followed with wins from Dylan Mahmut 2 up, Michael Gilbert 2&1, Harry Moncur 1 up, giving us a total of 4 points, so our match was halved with Herts. The overall winner would be decided on the outcome of both our matches against Middlesex. Jack Dyer as advised won his match & so did Aaron Edwards Hill with the second biggest win of the day of 6&5, Michael Gilbert 2&1, Josh Read with the biggest win of 8&7, Dylan Mahmut halved & the last man in, Harry Moncur winning a tight match 1 up. This giving Essex 5.5 points & a combined total of 9.5 points, surely enough to win the day. Well would you believe it Herts did exactly the same i.e 5.5 points also against Middlesex, giving them a combined total also of 9.5, so the day was shared. Essex & Herts also shared the same number of match points of 3 each. Special mention must be made of the U16 boys Michael Gilbert & Harry Moncur who won 3 of their 4 matches. Essex team: Jack Dyer, Rochford – Dylan Mahmut, Thorndon Park – George Gennings, Thorndon Park – Aaron Edwards Hill, Chelmsford – Michael Gilbert, Chelmsford – Harry Moncur, North Weald – Cassidy Stephans, Orsett – Josh Read, Three Rivers. - 45 -

SIR MICHAEL BONALLACK TROPHY & THE COLTS CHAMPIONSHIP Thorpe Hall Golf Club – Friday 20th May A field of 54 players took to the tight and beautifully manicured course at Thorpe Hall Golf Club. Some tricky pin positions made it tough to attack throughout the day. Joshua Cardy (Channels Golf Club) made a good start by posting a 74 (+3) to lead in the morning on his own. Closely followed by Ben Wyatt (The Rayleigh Club) with a 75. There were a group of players just two back on 76 which made for an exciting afternoon conclusion to the Sir Michael Bonallack Trophy. The Colts Championship meanwhile was closer grouped after the morning round. The annual championship for Under 21’s is run in conjunction with The Sir Michael Bonallack and this year saw a very tight bunched group all sat on 76 (+5). These included Callum Pipe (Braintree Golf Club), Max Smith (Clacton Golf Club), Brandon Meads (Chelmsford Golf Joshua Cardy Club) and William Percival (Orsett Golf Club). Finalist of the wins SMB. Keating Trophy George Leversuch was sat just one back on 77. Going into the afternoon’s play defending champion Alex Woodward (Boyce Hill Golf Club) had a lot to do after his morning round of 82, he managed to climb the leader-board after a round consisting of six birdies and just two bogeys resulted in a fine round of 67, the low score of the day by a margin of six shots. He said that after seeing the pin positions in the morning, he approached the afternoon with a little more caution and remained patient. His experience on the course was evident, but unfortunately for him it was only good enough for a runner up place, the consistency of Joshua Cardy saw his afternoon round equalling that of his morning round with a 74, totalling a 148 (+6) and enough to win the Sir Michael Bonallack Trophy. Congratulations Joshua! The Colts Championship was decided by another display of consistency. Will Percival equalled his morning round of 76 to finish with a total of 152 (+10), this saw William win the Colts Championship by one shot over George Leversuch who matched Williams 76 in the afternoon finishing on a total of 153 (+11). Congratulations William! Thorpe Hall was in fabulous condition and their hospitality, as always was impeccable. Thank you to the club, their staff and the members for giving up their course for the day. This result means that the Order of Merit is heating up. George Leversuch and Joshua Cardy share first place with 51 points whilst William Percival sits just three points back on 48. Full results are available on our website as well as the Order of Merit table. Follow us on Twitter to stay in touch with Essex County Golf News and information. ames Scade sprinkled some magic on a sparkling day at Braintree Golf Club with a seven under par 63. His round included eight birdies which was enough to take the professional first prize by six strokes from PGA Cup winner Jason Levermore with Marc Dodd a shot further back. Victory pushed Scade into a solid third place in the Order of Merit. Surprisingly the two players fighting for top spot in the OOM both failed to score any points. With only three points separating Lloyd Kennedy and Mark Talbot the contest to lift the first prize in the Porsche Order of Merit will go down to the last event, the Essex Open at The Burstead Golf Club in May.
To seal a successful day, Scade’s team of Malcolm Prior, Paul Duley and Andy Packer won the team event with 85 stableford points.

J
ames Webber from Three Rivers Golf and Country Club set the pace in the Pro-Am on the first day with a great score of 5 under, closely followed by Sam Teer from Clacton Golf Club one shot behind. Matt Stables from North Weald Golf Club led his team to victory in the team event with 87 points by one point from several teams. And so to the main event, the 36 hole 96th Essex Open which was closely fought as always, half hours delay at the start due to fog was followed by very heavy rain during the morning round A lunch time lead for Lee Cocker from Essex Golf and Country Club with 2 under par from 8 players within 2 shots meant an exciting afternoon round. The lead changed hands several times during the afternoon with an excellent 5 under par 67 from Craig Housden of Channels Golf Club seemingly enough to take the title after one over par in the morning. However, with only one group left on the course. Jason Levermore, also
Jason Levermore with Chris Nunn PGA in Essex Captain and Paul Homewood from Leisure Link.
from Channels Golf Club equalled his assistant’s round of 67 and with level par in the morning took the title by one shot with a two round total of 138, 4 under par. Surprisingly, this was Jason’s first Essex Open title and a great result for Channels Golf Club with the first two places, James Scade took third place a further shot behind and 1st round leader Lee Cocker finished fourth.

The
Jubilee Cup Update from Jubilee Cup Committee, sponsored by Seabrook Warehousing, and reported by Chairman Phil Redhead
W
ell another round draws to a close now, and, by the time you are reading this update, only Round Four will remain of the League Phase. You need to pay attention to the League positions closely from hereon in as things will shift a lot as the final rounds are played out. As an example, already within Division A we only have three clubs vying for the only place to go forward, and which will be decided in two games. Currently, Crondon Park, Stoke by Nayland, Playgolf Colchester, Stock Brook, Five Lakes, Burnham, Burstead and Manor of Groves are leading but there could be significant shifts in the final games of the League phase. Check out the current Division leaders at www.jubileecup.com/matches2016/divix16.html When you read this, all of the third round matches will have been played and portrayed on the web at: www.jubileecup.com/matches2016/draw3.htm Round 4 matches are below, and due to complete by 3rd July – keep tracking the results by our website specific to Round Four at www.jubileecup.com/matches2016/draw4.htm Manor of Groves have already made a charge in this round on this page by defeating The Essex 6.5 to 2.5. We continue to hear outstanding views from our participants, as a recent communication from Five Lakes’ Captain Nigel Popper attests in May, “This was such a close game [with the Warren] with the middle group of the pairs going to the 18th which decided the overall match and again we have all had a very nice day and thanks to The Warren for their part in making the game of golf a nice and friendly day.” - Nigel, thank you so much for the kinds words, plus also your support and feedback during the year.

A LA
NATURAL T
he golf industry is awash with various training aids which “guarantee” success, I wrote an article a few months ago on certain characteristics that I would personally look for in a training aid so this follows on with the theme. I thought that I would give you some very simplistic and effective ideas that you can use to assist with any swing changes you are currently working on, which are FREE. - 54 -
SHADOW IN THE SUN My first one is very seasonal so unfortunately can’t be relied upon here in the UK for your winter range work. This drill can be used to work on a number of swing “faults” some of which include n Swaying – Moving the body excessively away from the target in the backswing n Vertical rise on the back swing n Loss of height on the backswing
Simply use your shadow whilst marking your head position as shown in Figure 1 this will allow you to work on any rise and fall during your backswing providing immediate feedback.
SLIPPERY SLOPES
If you are a player who slices or is prone to the odd out to in shank … a few insignificant divots could come to the rescue!
If your backswing is too vertical or steep then try making some practice swings on a slope with the ball positioned above the level of your feet . This will give you the feeling of a more “rounded or level” arm swing.
Position a few divots on top of each other as shown in Fig 3 and try to hit the shot without disturbing the divots!!! There is no damage to your clubhead it is simple and free to set up. Please remember to place the divots in their rightful home. Fig 3.
If your shoulder turn is too “flat” or you swing the club too much around the body then the slope where the ball lies below the level of your feet is the one for you to use. This will encourage a naturally “steeper” backswing position. If your range has even subtle slopes think about how this can assist with your practice. I will explain how to play these shots in next months edition of Essex Golfer.

Fig 2. “Rise.”
DON’T DISTURB THE DIVOTS
Sloping ground is an incredibly effective method for working on backswing faults whilst providing the added benefit of hitting balls from the lie and understanding the shot outcome.
I am holding a Men’s Perfect Pitching clinic which is open to both Members and Non Members of Golf Clubs in Essex.

WHY and WHAT? FUN CHARITY DAY:
It is for 72 ladies who care and want a FUN DAY
I
t appears that the profile of most Ladies Sections is changing. There is an increasing number of ladies who only want to play nine holes. They play for social reasons and have generally stopped travelling to Open events. We believe that a Fun Charity Day can encompass these ladies plus those who have stopped golfing altogether and would simply enjoy lunch and activities shared with likeminded people. The day will also appeal to ladies who want a laugh and the chance to play their own ball over an extra nine holes. There is something for everybody and the chance to make a real difference by participating in the day as £5 of the entry goes to the charity. Everybody will play the first nine holes as a team of four playing a Las Vegas Texas Scramble.
Dunnottar group shows some of the children at the school.
The project was launch at Government House and the lady is the Governor General who is Dame Pearlette Louisy.
The roll of a dice determines which drive is taken. Mulligans can be purchased in advance so you can get you out of trouble at a cost of £2 each. Our nine hole ladies will return to the Club House for lunch, and after will participate in judging a BAKE OFF by tasting the cakes. The 18 hole ladies play an individual Stableford and have a late lunch. Everybody gets together for prize-giving and an auction of items donated by local businesses and some blind auction items. The day is in aid of Amy’s Gift to St. Lucia which is part funded by the Amy Winehouse Foundation. The project brings music therapy to over one hundred children with developmental disabilities and to boys who are wards of court, many of whom are in need of care and amysgiftstlucia.org. protection.

Jubilee Cup Defeat for Stoke
S
toke by Nayland now have to win their two remaining matches in their Jubilee Cup league after defeat to Three Rivers. The match was played at Three Rivers where the home team dominated the singles. The sole winner for Stoke was Eric Fisher and Captain Richard Bland halved his match. In the pairs there were wins for Frazer Lamb and Byron Long and another point for Alan White and
John Sandford. But with a final score of 5½ to 3½ points to Three Rivers the next match for Stoke at home to Mardyke Valley is a must win. Stoke by Nayland Team: Trevor Warren, Tim Dickens, Nigel Byham, Richard Bland (Captain), Luke Scillitoe, Eric Fisher, Roger Gardiner, Dean Cherry, Frazer Lamb, Byron Long, Alan White and John Sandford.
International Flavour at Stoke
C

The Winter League Final O
n the 8th of May the final of the Winter League was contested at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club by Roger Toone & Steve Clark against Martin Cotton & Shaun Underwood. This competition had started back in October 2015 with 55 pairs playing in 11 leagues of 5. The top 2 in each league and the best 10 of the 11 3rd placed pairs then played a knock Out from January this year. On a bright sunny day this was played on the Gainsborough course which was beginning to look like summer was finally arriving. Clark & Toone were hoping to build on their win in this competition in 2012 but were expecting a tough game against their seemingly in form opponents. The first hole was halved with par but the second was gifted to the eventual winners with Martin hitting 2 into the small pond and Shaun needing to take 3 off the tee. Clark & Toone then missed good opportunities for birdies on the 3rd but 2 fives on the long fourth & par 5 fifth secured 2 wins to go three up. Roger then birdied the 8th with a 12 foot putt and Martin unable to follow him in from 6 feet, to take the lead to 4 holes at
the turn. The 10th & 11th were won by Clark & Cotton but a win on the 13th from Toone put the winners 5 up with 5 to play. Toone then secured the win with a par on the par 5,14th for a 5 & 4 win. In truth, Martin & Shaun did not display their form from the previous rounds but they took the defeat in good spirits with the hope that their turn will eventually arrive.

Joy For Shelly
S
helley Persent will have been pleased with the good golfing conditions which saw her shoot the winning score in the Ladies Macmillan Spoon Medal at Colchester Golf Club. From an eighteen handicap, her 75 nett was enough to secure this week’s competition in the lady's section. Deviating just six times from her handicap’s regulation bogey a hole, and two of those were pars, she put herself one shot ahead of second placed Gillian Crayston (26) who shared her score of 76 with Margaret Carter (24). In fourth place was Madryn Abnett (16) who returned a nett 77.

Russell and Sam Win the Allan Riches at Five Lakes A
large field turned out to support the Allan Riches Memorial Trophy to commemorate his memory. On a glorious Saturday morning, we have forgotten that a few weeks ago we were battling through wind and rainy conditions. However, the scoring was quite high for this competitive competition. Two groups came in with 43 points, Malcolm Pook and Paul Bowers; along with Steve and Trevor Harris, Mark Harlow and Charlie Powell came in with 44 points to be just outside the main prizes. Two groups came in with 45 points and had to be split on count back to decide 2nd and 3rd places; Chris Graham and Dan Lambert were beaten by Lee Stafford and Doug Wood with 21 points on their back nine holes. The winners of the Allan Riches Trophy for 2016 were Russell Smith and Sam Sadler with 23 points on their front 9 followed by 22 points back 9 holes.
There was a trophy for the highest nett score for a junior; this was won by Ben Clark. There 12 players who won birdie balls for two’s on the par 3’s, not a bad effort as all the par 3’s were played from the white tee’s. picture; Jay Biagoni with his Trophy alongside Russell Smith club Captain Nigel Popper and Sam Sadler.

O
n a very chilly day, some 48 golfers played for the Secretary's trophy from the white tees on the championship 'Lakes course' at Five Lakes. Four players returned 35 points, Trevor Harris, John Mayle, Mark Harlow and Dave Parkins. Harry Clover (7) came in with a respectable 36 points to be just outside the main prizes. Third place went to Ian Cottee (8) with 37
points; second slot went to Clive Taylor (13) with 39 points; however, winner of the 2016 Secretary Trophy was Sam Sadler with a worthy 40 points. Birdie 2s was won by: Dave Woodley on the 4th, Richard Hardy-King and Mark Snoad on the 8th, Ian Cottee claiming a pair on both the 11th and 16th holes along with Phil Roblin also on the long 16th.
