FUTURE PLANS AT THE WARREN There has been considerable interest amongst the golfers of Essex about the existing changes taking place at The Warren Golf & Country Club. Planning is underway for the redesigned course by renowned architects Mackenzie & Ebert, which will see the beautiful Warren golf course further enhanced by the introduction of extensive drainage and irrigation along with changes to layout of the course. The new design will allow for the major cross-overs to be eliminated and the course length extended to 7000 yards. Matthew Manning, Managing Director of The Warren Estate commented “The new layout and investment in the course will restore the Warren golf course to being the finest in Essex, and the design allows for the course development to take place with minimal disruption to play. In fact we have already refurbished the bunkers on 6 holes and plan to continue the bunker work on three more holes ready for the summer season.” It is not just the course that is seeing the benefit of investment, the clubhouse is also about to undergo a major refurbishment program. Transformation to the club house will begin with a brand new Gentlemen and Ladies locker room befitting the finest course in East Anglia. The Captain’s Lounge and Freddie’s Sports Bar will also be redecorated providing the Warren members and guests with quality food in a traditional setting. “This is a fantastic time to join The Warren as we embark on this exciting journey. Membership to The Warren will be limited and we plan to introduce a joining fee this summer. As a special offer we are inviting golfers to join now for May 2014 and you will receive up to May FREE.” To come and see the exciting new changes taking place please call us on 01245 223258 or email sales@thewarrenestate.co.uk

As usual, the New Year has brought inclement weather. We should all be used to it by now. But I still dislike playing in really muddy conditions, particularly when temporary greens and tees are being used. Still, it’s better to be out in the fresh air getting some exercise than staying at home. And temporaries have to be utilised to protect the golf courses. But you can’t stop dreaming of playing golf in shorts and shirts with the sun on your back. Anybody looking to plan a golf holiday this year should seriously consider an all inclusive package deal to Turkey. Their government has targeted golf for tourist expansion and most of the courses, hotels and facilities are first rate. They have a European Tour event now and take golf and the subsequent tourists seriously. Throw in a big depreciation in the Turkish Lira and you will find it difficult to get better value for money. If you are staying at home this year, the rain should stop by the end of March!

CHANNELS’ THOMPSON SECURES TOUR CARD FOR 2014 Channels GC member Charlotte Thompson will play on the Ladies European Tour (LET) in 2014 after finishing in the top 30 in the Lalla Aicha Tour School Final Qualifying event. Chelmsford-based Thompson, 21 survived a jittery final round at the Samanah Country Club in Marrakech, Morocco, after sitting third going into the final day, to finish tied 27th - just inside the cut for a Tour card. Thompson is expected to begin her campaign as a professional back in Morocco, in March's €450,000 Lalla Meryem Cup, at Golf de l'Ocean, in Agadir. Thompson, who was ranked in the top 10 English order of merit before qualifying to play on the LET, said: "It's pretty much a full card; I get most of the starts on the Tour but I'll have to qualify for the Evian Masters and the Ricoh Women's British Open. "Currently I don't feel any different, I just want to get started. I played in the Open in 2012 and that was a fantastic experience in itself and, while I didn't play my best out on the course, on the range I didn't feel out of place alongside the big names. I'll be playing the game I love alongside people of the same standard and who have been doing it a lot longer than me." Turning professional and attempting the daunting Qualifying School was not just a challenge for Thompson, it was also a gamble - but it paid off handsomely.

She added: "I didn't have the best amateur year in 2013 but I'd been doing the circuit for a while now, so I thought I'd give qualifying school a try. So I turned pro with the view that if I didn't make it through Q School and get my card I'd go on the Access Tour, which is a lot bigger now. "I knew I didn't really have anything to lose; I had no expectations because I'd never done it before, which was the same when it went into the second week. Anything I gained in the second week was a bonus, because just getting there meant I had my Access card. "I had my friend, Matthew Southgate, caddying for me - he plays on the European Tour - and he just helped me heaps. I wouldn't have been able to do it without him. I learned so much from him. The courses suited me, especially at Samanah. The weather was nice and I just really enjoyed it." She may now be moving in the higher echelons of ladies' European golf but Thompson will always be a Channels girl at heart. "I've been coached by David March, at Little Channels, for as long as I can remember. I've known him since I was about five and he's not just a coach he's like a brother to me. He knows my game inside out and explains things so I can understand them," she explained. "I can't thank the members and the club enough at Channels as they've always supported me. I've always had members saying ‘well done', ‘good luck', and emailing me. It's a great club. "Even when I was younger and went to America the club and members supported me bundles and I'll still be around the club when I'm not competing. I only live in Chelmsford so, if I am having a break, I'll pop up for lunch or something - my mum works up there as well." Taking on the challenge of Qualifying School was hard enough in itself, but, arguably, the really hard work will start when the season tees off and Thompson looks to accrue sufficient winnings to be back again in 2015. She concluded: "My main aim is to keep my card for next season - anything above that is a bonus - and I would love to qualify for the Ricoh Women's British Open again as it's around a course I love, Royal Birkdale."

Revolutionise Your Putting Stroke It is widely recognised that putting is equally important as the full swing; both add up to equal a measure of your score around 40% each. However, we tend to spend most of our coached time learning about our full swing and most of our practice time hitting full shots, often with the driver at the local driving range. This can’t possibly be totally productive. Over the next few articles I am going to concentrate my efforts on the short game; how to improve your technique and how to practice.

square, parallel left of the target line.

The first in the series, your putting set up and most importantly the position of your elbows and grip. It is worth noting that the grip should change through the short game as we do not require any leverage or club head speed that is normally produced through a more standard full swing grip.

Now as in the picture place your hands with the sides next to each other, and your elbows facing back towards the hips. From this set up, your wrists are very much rendered passive.

Ideally, when we putt; we want to eliminate all movement of the wrists, so that the putter is swung on a very simple ark in a pendulum motion from the shoulders. This is best emphasised and worked on in the practice drill I am doing in pictures 1 thru 3.

At the top of my backswing the relationship between my hands and shoulders has remained the same, only my shoulders have moved; my lower body has remained completely stable.

Picture 1 Create an over the ball posture with your spine angle tilted as forward as possible, I have my stance

Picture 2

Picture 3 Post impact, again you can see the relationship between my hands and shoulders has remained the same; my lower body has remained passive.

This is translated into a stroke with the putter as in picture 4.

Quieter hands will improve putter face control and add consistency to your stroke.

Here you can see a close up of the grip and elbow positions, both hands are aligned more to the underside of the grip and the elbows have retained their position, pointing back towards the hips. In pictures 5 and 6 you can observe the stroke with the shoulder, hand and putter relationship remaining the same.

If you are interested in improving your whole short game, why not join me at Bramshaw Golf Club in the heart of the beautiful New Forrest this summer on one of my residential short game tuition breaks, details can be found on garypikegolf.com

Margaret’s Ace A dream came true for Margaret Oliver, Lady Captain of Orsett Golf Club when she scored a superb Hole in One at the 119 yard par three 8th hole. Making a perfect strike with her trusty 5 wood she watched the ball roll onto the green but, with the sun shining in her eyes, missed seeing it drop into the hole. Believing the ball had rolled to the back of the green she was walking past the flag when, with amazement, she cried “it’s in the hole!!”

In 1954, Ida Bunting organised the first meeting of The Society of Lady Captains of Essex Golf Clubs, pretty much all ting by herself, at Thorpe Hall Ida Bun Golf Club. She then brought together a small Committee and from records, it is known that the first Treasurer was Tina Payne. The Froom Cup was first played for in 1955 and other meetings and trophies were added later. In those days, the competition format was Foursomes. In more recent years, the format was changed to Greensomes and ladies now enjoy a friendly 4BBB format. During the 60 years of the Society there has only been 4

Lady Presidents, Ida was succeeded by Anne Burke The Warren GC then Joan Bond Theydon Bois GC and the current Lady President is Jan Collier Forrester Park GC. Phyllis Stillwell (now Vice President of Maylands Golf Club) joined the Society in 1965. She has served on the Committee for many years in different roles and even today in her 80’s still actively supports the Society as a Vice President. Phyllis recounts that in the early days, it was tradition to arrive at a meeting in your smart clothes and only change for golf before play; changing back again for dinner. She also tells of one event at

4 Lady Captains including Phyllis Stillwell (a Vice President of the Society) attending her first Lady Captains Meeting at Chigwell Golf Club in 1965 (Phyllis is second from the right)

Maylands when the Chef went sick and members of the Committee rustled up the meal themselves! Ida Bunting died in 1990 and in memory of her as founder and first Lady President of the Society, the Ida Bunting Memorial Trophy was inaugurated in 1992. This competition is still being hotly contested today, through qualifying rounds at clubs and then a series of knockout rounds. There are 48 entries this year for the knockout stages and the competition will commence in earnest in April with the final towards the end of August. The Society now has around 350 members; it runs 5 Meetings and 5 Friendly matches (the latter with other Societies of Lady Captains and the Essex Men's Society of Captains) each year, all of which are competitive and great fun. 2014 sees a few extra events to celebrate their 60th Anniversary, a special Away Day (drawn team competition) to Hintlesham GC, Suffolk in June, plus a fun 9 hole competition in August for any members who cannot manage 18 holes any longer or who do not have an active Congu

handicap. Other golfing events this year include: Spring Meeting and AGM at Maylands in April, Summer Meetings at Canons Brook GC in May, Channels GC in July and Three Rivers GC in August finishing off the golfing season with their Autumn Meeting at Play Golf Colchester in September. The Committee is also planning a 60th Anniversary Lunch in November. Over the past few years, the Committee has worked hard to streamline their processes and make the Society fitting for its current membership base. Their meetings are all well attended and Lady Captains enjoy the really friendly atmosphere at all the events. 2014 looks set to be an exciting and celebratory year for the Society, so if you have been a Lady Captain at a Golf Club in Essex and you want to join, go to their website www.essexladycaptains.wordpress.com to see their full programme of events and download an application form. Alternatively, contact Carol Bell Hon Secretary preferably by email carol@bell-ufp.freeserve.co.uk or telephone 01376 330 906.

Hybrids, Utilities, Rescues, Driving Irons & D.I.R’s Over the years I have spoken many times about replacing your irons with something easier to use, in 2014 you will have probably more options than ever before. With this in mind I thought I would explain the difference between each style of club, where they came from and their best use. So, here goes ... Hybrids

Driving Irons

When hybrids first hit the market several years ago I always thought of them as ego massaging lofted fairway woods. By this, I mean that giving a golfer a seven or nine wood was like giving them a lofted driver – it was the devil! Give them, a hybrid and everybody was happy, essentially they were very similar. Why? Firstly, the shaft was very long and was from a fairway wood, the head a little smaller but with plenty of loft. Hybrids, Rescues & Utilities are essentially the same club, doing the same job – promoting a higher flight with a steeper landing angle so easier to keep on the green from distance. Also, for players with slower swing speeds the higher flight works well instead of longer irons as players struggle to hit the longer irons high enough to obtain the required carry distance. Hybrids have a smaller head size than fairway woods, so they are great for shots from semi-rough or awkward lies.

A long time ago, in a sport far far away...There was a golf club called a one iron, an elusive beast but when found would generally be hiding in the golf bag of either a low handicap or professional. It was the holy grail of irons, the point when you knew you had ‘made it’ as a golfer. In the wrong hands, a truly lethal weapon but used correctly an incredibly impressive part of any golfers armoury. However, that was then and this is now and with all the changes of club design the one iron got sidelined due to it's limited market, hybrids became king and the one iron became obsolete. But, like anything, hybrids are not for everyone, we know hybrids promote a higher flight but what if you play on a seaside course where the flags bend so much they do push ups in the wind? Then maybe a driving iron is for you - an

- 20 -

easier to hit long iron with a medium to low ball flight (depending on loft and model) – great for windy conditions. An up to date design means many of these irons are now hollow, think of a hybrid as half way between a fairway wood and an iron and then a driving iron as half way between a hybrid and an iron – hopefully you can see where this design fits in.

D.I.R’s (Direct Iron Replacement) Not to be confused with a hybrid this club has an iron shaft that would match your iron set. Shaft length, weight etc would be consistent with your set of irons. This style of club directly replaces it's iron counterpart but with an easier, higher launching head design.Think of it like this, a hybrid bridges the gap between irons and woods, a D.I.R. replaces an iron. With a slightly flatter face design the club plays more like an iron and many companies now offer these up to a six or seven iron, ideal for slower swingers.

So, which one do you chose? Firstly, look at the type of shot you want to play and then look at the course you play most of your golf. Perhaps, there is a par 3 of a certain yardage that you struggle to hit with your current set so it would make sense to ‘plug’ this gap. Is the course windy? Are there short par 4’s where position off the tee is paramount or perhaps a par 5 where an iron is pushing it, but a fairway wood is too long? Most importantly know the type of shot you need, I once asked a very accomplished Lady Tour Professional why she carried a hybrid and after about a 20 second silence she admitted she honestly did not know! There’s hope for us all…

GREAT GOLF ALL YEAR SINCE 1922 For British golfers who do play through the winter months it can mean driving rain, ankle deep mud, temporary greens, woolly hats, mittens and waterproofs – and worst of all – the ‘Course Closed’ sign. Luckily, the winter golf curse hasn’t landed on Thorpeness Golf Club. Here on the Suffolk Coast we enjoy some mighty good meteorology that makes us the perfect winter golf course: • One of the lowest average rainfall rates in the UK • Sandy quick drying soil • A location on a flat low lying coastal plain • Around two hours more sunshine per week than the rest of the UK

Essex County News Essex County Golf Union Tel: 01376 500 998 Fax: 01376 500 842 www.essexgolfunion.org

It is the start of a new year and a new golfing season and for the Essex Golf Union, we start with a new Press Officer, Ben Crew. Ben is taking over from Frank Tomlin, who has done a splendid job for Frank Tomlin. the County since he took over from Cliff Crook in June 2012, and for all hard work, we offer our most sincere thanks to him. The role is a very time consuming one and done on a purely voluntarily basis, as are Ben Crew. all of the positions on our various committees, without the commitment of these people we would not be able to provide the level of service that we do to our affiliated clubs.

USGA Course Rating Please also note that over the next 10 years the Standard Scratch Score of all courses in the County will be re-rated under the USGA system. This will be a joint venture between the Essex Ladies County Golf Association and the Essex Golf Union. We will be contacting clubs in the near future with a view of visiting the courses that are on our urgent list. This project is being led by Pat Garner from the Ladies Golf Union and Allan Lockwood from the Men’s Union. Changes in the CONGU Handicapping Scheme for 2014 CONGU have advised that the following changes will take effect on 1st January 2014. • Change of annotation of handicap (active/inactive) – Clauses 25 and 26 • Restriction on return of Supplementary Scores for Category 1 players – Clause 21 Change to the restoration of a players handicap – Clause 26

U12 Coaching The Essex Golf Union has established five golf coaching centres across the County; these are at Crowlands Heath, Garon Park, Frinton, Little Channels and North Weald Golf Clubs Each of these venues will serve approximately fifteen local clubs. We are interested in youngsters that were under the age of twelve on 1 January 2014. We will be holding Talent Days during in February or March to select the boys and girls for this programme. At this stage, it is not necessary to be a member of a Golf Club, although this will become necessary if the youngster is to progress to

County teams in the future. On the Talent Days, the coaches will be looking for boys and girls who display the potential to be scratch golfers by the age of 16. If selected the children must be able to commit to attending these sessions which will include opportunities to play and compete with the best youngsters across Essex in this age group. From this programme a progression to participate in the Essex Under 12 Tour will be available. If you are interested then, please see our website for an application form and return it to the County Office as soon as possible, please phone the County Office for any further information.

Have you got a Long Term Plan Learning from Henrik Stenson Listening to Henrik Stenson talk about his stellar season in 2013, one of the things that stood out for me is on how he turned his game around by having a long term plan. He said that when he was struggling and fell to 230th in the world – he would go from tournament to tournament trying to find a swing or a thought that would get him through the week and that would sometimes work and if not, he would try something new next week. In other words, he was always searching, hoping something would work and his results showed it. What he did was get honest with himself, what his weaknesses were and made a plan with his team to address those issues and the results have been pretty spectacular. So how does this apply to the rest of us and how can we easily implement this into our golf. Simply try answering the questions below. 1. Identify 3 things that you would like to improve in 2014. 2. Make a plan of how you are going to improve these things. For example, maybe your chipping is costing you a lot of shots and you’re getting down more often in 3 or 4 shots and rarely in 2. A plan to address this could be; 1. Have an assessment with a PGA Professional on your chipping technique to identify if there are issues in your technique, and then decide on a lesson plan and a timescale when you want to see these areas improve. 2. You may start two chipping skills tests & keep a record of your scores in them and then re-test yourself on these once a month to see if you are improving. 3. Commit to practicing your chipping twice a week for 30 minutes instead of just hitting balls on the range or even set up a chipping net in the back garden.

You can see this starts to look like a longer term plan instead of going from one tip to another hoping something works. This is not a complicated process and can easily be implemented. Matt is offering 3 for 2 an all lessons in January and February to get your golfing year off to a flying start and make 2014 your best golfing year so far.

Winter Golf at Burnham On Crouch Golf Club. Burnham On Crouch Golf Club has been reaping the benefits of some good long term planning. Despite heavy rainfall, the course mainly stayed open over the Christmas period and into the New Year, largely due to efficient drainage on both fairways and greens. September 2013 saw some major work on the17th and 18th greens which has proved to be very successful. The work itself took four green keepers 8 days to finish, drainage was installed, turf re-laid, and the course was in use within two weeks, an amazing feat. Look at the greens now and you would never believe it had happened! Similar investment is planned for the 9th, 10th and 16th greens in 2014, all greens will then be dry, quick, and importantly true throughout the year. The club welcomed numerous visitors from other clubs over the past couple of months when other courses were closed or unplayable due to the adverse weather conditions. Complimentary

comments were received on the general condition of the course, and being able to use trolleys with hedgehog wheels without causing damage to the course. On a few days unfortunately we were not able to accommodate the number of green fees wishing to play at Burnham, as we wished to maintain our policy of ensuring that members are always able to access the course without prior booking. In addition to the record number of visitors at this time of the year Burnham has been welcoming many new 7 day members. The full 7 day membership is £825pa, which equates to just £68.75 per month (plus golf union fee and finance cost if paid by direct debit). For unlimited golf at a friendly member’s club where there are no tee times, and the course is fully playable throughout the year. Opportunity to join is limited, as soon as the required number has been reached, availability membership will close. Please contact Ken, Steve, or Anj on 01621 782 282 for further details.

Don’t despair about the weather interrupting your golf over the forthcoming weeks, there is always something to work on when away from the course. If we can set aside some constructive indoor putting practise the improvement will be noticeable and we will feel some sense of achievement.

Here is a selection of my top 5 putting aids that I use when coaching. When I select my training aids it is vital that they tick the following requirements. • Easy for my clients to set up and transport • Competitively priced and readily available • Give immediate feedback to both my clients and myself • Can alter the skill level • Monitor progression • Dual purpose • Durable • To aid consistency

Each of the above putting aids can be used indoors too which is a huge bonus especially at this time of the year. They can also be used whilst travelling which was important when I played on the Ladies European Tour.

Meet my top 5 in no particular order! 1. “The pill” A super addition to this years collection which relies on a "square" contact to obtain a true roll of the treaded style golf ball. "The pill" will wobble from side to side like a weighted crown bowling ball if the ball is struck at an angle. Its versatility is second to none with numerous drills which can also be used to assist with the short game shots around the green. They are suitable for all ages and provide hours of entertainment. 2. Ball of steel: These always cause a giggle as they are heavily weighted and perfect for those players who tend to decelerate or have a curtailed follow through, to be used on short putts. Watch out when using your own golf ball after 10 minutes practise with these!!! "fore" 3. Centred strike pad: Another amusing and tricky aid which is adhered to the putter face with a small amount of tape. There is just enough of a window for the golf ball to fit. If the ball is struck from the heel or toe you will certainly know as it will leave the face at a 90 degree angle. These come in three different skill levels, start with the easiest one first!! (which is still tricky) 4. Alignment triangle: Great as a mobile coach! simply check your initial aim at address is that of your intended read using the point of the triangle. This alignment aid ensures the face is square at address and not aiming right or left to start with, which will cause inconsistencies in the stroke. The ball is placed and struck from the dimple providing instant feedback. 5. Putting Mirror: This checks shoulder alignment and eye line position at address, with the added benefit of the "putting gate". Two tees are placed in the holes either side to assist with the path of the putter head. I hope you have learned how to use my winter survival putting kit. Please contact me if you would like to test them out during our putting lesson copyright SarahBennettGolf

I am delighted that my 2014 schedule has been released www.SarahBennettGolf.co.uk with a series of Intermediate Ladies, Men’s, Junior Group sessions. - 39 -

THE BURSTEAD GOLF • CLUB

Tye Common Road, Little Burstead, Billericay, Essex, CM12 9SS info@thebursteadgolfclub.com www.thebursteadgolfclub.com

The Burstead Golf Club, located on Tye Common Road, Little Burstead, Essex, is a proprietary club that has reassuringly never changed ownership and carries the values of a traditional members club, but where visitors and guests are made welcome. The course was created by the vision of the owners who sought the design expertise of the renowned, late Patrick Tallack, and offers a challenge to the accomplished golfer yet will not intimidate newcomers to the game. It was laid to seed in the spring of 1992 and opened for play in July 1993. Although relatively new in terms of years, the course shows maturity beyond its years, with the greens in particular establishing an excellent reputation and many complimentary comments from both members and visitors alike.

Could change in 2014 improve your golf ? I am constantly amazed how fast junior golfers can adopt new ideas to facilitate change and improvement. Why put up with, or accept the same results? When improvement is often not far away‌ Juniors accept change as part of their development, taking on new ideas from magazines, television and golf lessons. As adults we still have a lot of information to learn and just because something feels different, does not mean that it is wrong. Try taking on new information with an open mind, learn what’s causing poor shots and learn how to improve the problem. A hero of mine is Padraig Harrington, sometimes criticised for

changing things in his game when already a 3 time Major winner. The question is, if he had not changed things throughout his career would he ever have reached the elite level that he has? As adults we want to improve but are often doubtful as to the outcome, almost fearful we may get worse. Continuing to do and think in the same way will generally provide you with the same results. Great one-to-one and group offers in February. www.bretttaylorgolf.com

Clean, Lean,

Golf Machine!

Firstly, a happy, healthy and prosperous 2014 to you all from everyone at Bodysense Uk Ltd! We hope you've had a fabulous Christmas and New Year break and are raring to go for a fantastic forthcoming year. Start the year as you mean to go on – set yourself both golfing and nutritional challenges and aim to stick to them. Firstly, aim to filter out at least some of those toxins – reduce CAFFEINE, ALCOHOL and both PROCESSED and FAST food as a great starting point. To get the ultimate healthy start try The Clean 9, by Forever Living or Richard Callender's Sugar Challenge. Secondly, add in, not just take out! Add fruit to your breakfast – berries for a thyroid boost, pineapple for anti-inflammatory bromelain, banana for potassium and kiwi for an extra boost of vitamin C! Lunch options should always include a PROTEIN to promote a glucose levelling effect. Perfect

options would be tuna, prawns or crayfish, alternatively chicken with avocado. Each can be combined with salad leaves, peppers, cucumber and grated carrot in a wholemeal pitta/Mission Deli’ wrap for a superfood lunch. Finish the day by aiming to DITCH YOUR CARBS AFTER 5! This will rest both the gut and the liver and precipitate gentle weight loss if required. Quick test for you, just to see if you need a cleanse. Grab a glass of tap water. Pull in your cheeks to make your mouth watery, spit into the glass, and WATCH! If the water goes cloudy, frothy and particularly if the spit ‘grows legs’ (stringy effect under the surface of the water), then there’s too much sugar in your diet! The sugar causes an imbalance of beneficial bacteria allowing yeast/candida to thrive. Hence, reduce or avoid sugar and yeast based items. Take Nutrispore (0800) 212 742 to clean up your act too! Make 2014 your best year for health.

Geoff Does It Again

Sheena Wins Medal Spoon

Caption Geoff with ball and club outside the new entrance to Clacton Golf Club.

Past Captain and long time member of Clacton Golf Club Geoff Manning, achieved his long awaited second “Hole in One”. In 1991 Manning achieved the feat at the Clacton Club’s seventh hole and last month he did it again on Clacton’s seventh hole, using a seven iron and a white ball to achieve his second “Hole in One”. Congratulations Geoff. !"#$%&'()*+,(-#'(./(&"(01+'(2"$33(4%53$6()*+,(!+17!! !"#$%&'()*+,(-#'(./(&"(01+'(2"$33(4%53$6()*+,(!+17 ! 8199*$&%:;(!#:%:3(<#$&:3$6!! 8199*$&%:;(!#:%:3(<#$&:3$6

Sheena Nunny was the winner of the Medal Spoon last week at Colchester Golf Club in the E.G. Medal. Played on a tough day for golf with little or no run on the ball Nunny’s score of nett 73 was well clear of the rest of the field with her nearest rival being some five shots back. Playing off her seventeen handicap the strength of round was her back nine where she posted four pars and no double bogies. Cherie Clark (21) was second with a nett 78 and Shelley Persent (20) third with a nett 80.

Epping’s Top Dogs Epping GC “Top Dog” competition this year took place on New Years Day Players had to record the best two stableford points score on each hole .Players received their full handicap allowance plus an equal number of “Dogs chances” – the option to replay any shot. All the dogs enjoyed warm towels and chew by the fire afterwards.

Matt and Harry win Three Club Challenge Matt Black and Harry Harrison took all the plaudits after Colchester Golf Club’s Three Clubs and a Putter competition. Played between Christmas and New Year, the weather forecast for the day was a good one for golf and there is little doubt that Black and Harrison took every advantage as their score of 86 points was 26 clear of the rest of the field!

Winter Golf in Suffolk Ufford Park Woodbridge, in Suffolk, provides the perfect setting for that leisurely Winter golf break and with an award winning, ‘Top Winter’ 18 hole, par 71 golf course set in 120 acres of beautiful and historic countryside. It is generally regarded as an enjoyable, yet stern test of golf. New Year New You? Happy New Year! At this time of year everyone is making their New Years resolutions or breaking them, one way or another!! Did you make any resolutions regarding your Golf this year? If so in this article I am going to talk about my top 4 tips to be a better golfer ... Tip 1: Flexibility At this time of year the weather is appalling, a lot of courses are shut, this is your time to improve your flexibility. That time you spent of the course can now be used to follow a good flexibility programme. Seek out a professional who can range of motion test you and design you a Bespoke flexibility programme. Tip 2: Eat Clean The lighter and more in shape you are the easier it will be to hit the ball and well! There are many diets out there but in my professional opinion they are short term ... eat good clean foods and research clean eating plans. A book I can highly recommend for lifestyle is “eat move and be healthy” by Paul Chek. Tip 3: Relaxation Any golfer would agree ... the power to calm the mind is priceless, try some yoga, meditation or stretch and relax classes. Yoga DVD’s are actually

quite good and will teach you to relax and recharge the mind, also to switch off the mind. Tip 4: Postural Endurance The posture is key to golf and how you play. I have spoke about posture ALOT!!! Ideally achieving postural endurance ... try the prone cobra and the supine hip extension as part of your daily routine and work up to 4 minute holds on each ... this seems impossible, keep working on it!

If you type into YouTube ... Prone Cobra the bodysmith, there is a great video to aid technique with this. Then Supine Hip Extension feet on ball the bodysmith. Have a go at the exercises and aim for 3-4 minutes work! Good luck!
