Counties Encourage Thousands To

Get into golf T

he number of people taking up ‘Get into golf’ opportunities grew rapidly over the summer months, according to a new report on grass roots activity across England. Over 24,000 people, aged 14-plus, were encouraged by counties to take structured coaching courses and to become regular, once-aweek golfers in the six months from April to September 2014. That’s up by 59% on the same period in 2013, says the latest Impact Report on county activity, prepared by England Golf’s Participation and Club Support department. The figures reflect a new focus by counties on delivering structured coaching and regular playing opportunities, rather than one-off taster sessions. This approach is supported by the England Golf Strategic Plan for 201417 which sets out to inspire people of all ages to make golf a part of their life and aims to reverse the trend of declining club membership.

Claire Roberts, England Golf’s Head of Participation, commented: “We have been very encouraged by the results from this new approach and the closer partnerships which are being created between our county officers and clubs. “We know there is enormous interest in playing golf and, by working together in this way, we can offer more opportunities for people to become regular golfers and club members.” The figures are beating targets set by the England Golf Partnership (EGP), which invests in 32 counties to support grass roots golf and grow participation. The results will also be measured by Sport England’s Active People Survey which is out now. The Report Details: Over 62,000 people, aged over 14, were involved in activity in the six months; a 16% increase in 2014. Over 24,000 took part in structured activity (59% increase) and more than 13,700 people became regular, once a week players (83% increase). Of these, 39% are women, which the report describes as encouraging when compared to the overall number of female golfers in Great Britain (13%). A total of 4,139 new club memberships were reported. These could include juniors but, based on an average full playing adult golf club membership fee of £846, could equal an investment of over £3.5 million over six months.

Golf Resolutions

T

he beginning of the calendar year is a time of hope and resolution, with many of us taking the opportunity to change certain things in our lives as well as improving our game of golf. Many of our good intentions are not carried through in the course of the year but the ones that are, are the most satisfying. Here are some golf resolutions for the New Year. 1. Stop giving yourselfs short putts. 2. Take one lesson or more to improve your greatest weakness. 3. Practice your game at least one hour a week. 4. Be more patient with yourself, do not impose expectations on yourself. 5. Find a golf ball that does not get lost. 6. Have more fun, play well and enjoy your playing partners. Let us hope 2015 will be your best ever year of golf. Tony Hawkins

COLCHESTER

A

belated Happy New Year to you all. This year is very exciting for us as we have a much bigger selection of woods and irons. As well as new product from Taylormade, Callaway, Cobra, Ping and Wilson we are introducing 2 semi exclusive ranges, Srixon and XXIO. Additionally to this in March we will have a fantastic Ping offer on woods and irons. XXIO is the biggest selling golf brand in Japan and out performs anything. (If you go to www.xxiousa.com you will see what all the fuss is about!) We have a full range of equipment which can be taken out and tried on the course. It is exceptionally good for ladies and those with slower swings. You have got to try it to see it out perform anything you have had in your bag before!! Over on the other page we have pictured 16 of the new products in our line up. You have the opportunity to try before you buy and as before we offer free custom fit on the irons to ensure they are exactly right for you. We also have our usual extensive range of clothing and shoes (the ladies clothing should be in by the time you read this) with all the usual leading brands and a vast amount of different price points, colours and styles to suit everyone. As well as this we have an extensive range of trolleys (electric, push and pull), Motocaddy have both an electric remote coming out and a ‘state of arc’ Rolls Royce one! GPS watches and devises from Skycaddy, Bushnell, Golfbuddy and new from Tom Tom will feature strongly in the store. Lastly we have sourced from Srixon Golf over 2,000 boxes of golf balls at a very special price for all levels of golfer. These are heavily featured in store and are super value (even better if you buy 2 boxes). With over 90 years of experience between us in the golf trade we still insist in maintaining a level of service that cannot be matched.

SUPER DEALS

Which is why after 20 years Nevada Bobs Colchester is still going strong. As a team we feel this year is the best selection of products we have had for over ten years. I’m sure we can help everyone to improve their golf, look their best, enjoy their golf and start performing in competitions or just taking money from your playing partners!! Look forward to seeing you all.

Wanstead Golf Club by David Hawkins

I

have been the Head Professional at Wanstead Golf Club since August 1994. Over the last 21 years, I have seen the golf course maintain a high standard of play, offering a terrific test of golf that is accessible to everyone in Essex and the surrounding counties, as well as being only a 30-minute journey by tube from the centre of London providing a number of Urban dwelling players an easy option as a golfing oasis from the High Rise of the City, Docklands and West End. Wanstead is a golf club that has maintained a good level of active playing members and also through myself introduced a beginner membership offering novice players a path into an established golf club at a minimal cost to begin. Great to see a number of new ladies and gents taking up the game over the recent seasons. Also a Junior Section to be proud of hosting an active number this is all positive stuff that essentially has come through the guidance and encouragement from the Pro Shop staff to welcome younger players into the club.

From the Club management itself, a new “Lifestyle type membership will be available in 2015 for golfers who cannot commit to a full membership fee, but with a tariff in place to offer around 20/25 rounds a year and access to club competitions meaning they can be a little more selective as to when they are available to enjoy the Club. Wanstead Golf Club has recently undertaken a massive clubhouse refurbishment bringing in excellent on site facilities and is now expanding to upgrade the golf course over the next few seasons. Work has started in 2014 on a number of new tees, which will certainly give new characteristics to holes 2/5/12 and 18 with the widening of these tees giving each hole a different profile to its previous image. The Club is playing host to the Essex Open in May 2015 having hosted the Essex Amateur Championship and Thornton Cup Final in 2014. Those who know this course are aware that with small sloping greens, the Par of 69 is never often torn up, and it will be interesting to see what sort of scoring the Essex Open throws up during May 2015. My Golf Shop at the club offers a full compliment of all Top Branded golf equipment,

including Ping, Callaway, Cobra, Taylor Made and we are a DNA fitting centre for the Mizuno Brand. Large ranges of Clothing, Shoes, Golf Bags as well as accessories on offer with Titleist Pro V1 multi buys always available at most stages of the season. Coaching is available virtually 7 days a week with one of the best putting greens and Separate Chipping greens for serious Short-game practice anywhere. Accompanied by our covered three bay practice area and covered practice nets plus my own indoor facility and a golf course that is always open even in the wettest periods during the year. Wanstead GC provides any golfer with an obvious choice for all aspects of playing and practicing. On a personal note I commence my role as PGA in Essex Captain on the 15th of January. I will be looking to play a few events in the early months during the year in which I am looking to take teams from Wanstead to play at Woodbridge, Gog Magog, Burnham On Crouch and Toot Hill in Pro am Events. Prior to The Essex Open championship is the Essex Open Pro Am on Wednesday 13th of May my aim is to fill all available spots in this event. Members and associates of Wanstead Golf Club

as well as Local Business and Visiting Players are welcome to enter this event. We have around 20 teams already confirmed and we are looking to host around 40 teams in total on the day. If interested contact us or the PGA In Essex. All the tournaments mentioned are available to view on PGA East Region and then the link to Essex. I welcome all those golfers who will put themselves forward to support both Wanstead Golf Club and the PGA in Essex 2015.

SPLASH SHOT

W

ith all the wet weather we have experienced recently our greenside bunkers have certainly become a real hazard unless we have an understanding of the most appropriate club to use and how to give ourselves the best chance to play the shot. It is important to understand golf courses utilise many different types of sand with the depth of sand

often varying which influences the strike, spin and control of the ball. When playing from wet sand the ball will roll further and leave the clubface faster so allow for this characteristic when playing this shot. The following points are useful to assist with your club selection when playing from wet compacted sand conditions.

- 10 -

1. Try using a club with less “bounce” for example a Pitching wedge or a Lob wedge if you carry one. There are other sand shot methods which can be used to reduce the “bounce” whilst using your trusted sand wedge. 2. Be creative with your club selection, I am sure many of you saw Ricky Fowler use his putter from a rather steep bunker earlier this year! If I am positioned in a bunker with a shallow face and hard compacted sand I would consider using my putter and have done so many times to great effect. Please do not forget the same hazard rules apply so remember we are not permitted to ground your putter in the bunker prior to making your stroke. I like to focus upon performance in conjunction with the technique when coaching so let’s reduce the margin of error and lower those scores for 2015. Image www. PGA.com

3. I see many players selecting to “chip” the ball from a hard pan or compact lie in a greenside bunker with a 9 or 7 iron, depending upon the distance to the flag this may well be an option, but PLEASE do not try this shot for the first time in your medal round. This shot requires a precise strike, sound technique and plenty of practice.

STRIKE YOUR

CHIP SHOTS I

f you want to improve the quality of your strike when chipping, practise hitting some short chip shots holding your finish position. Your goal is to swing through the ball, finishing with both arms extended past impact and still facing the ground ahead. This is a great exercise and will help improve 2 critical facts to better your strike 1. Club Face Control – the club face will have less manipulation from the hands. 2. Compression – your hands will lead the club face slightly through impact, helping to contact the ball before the turf.

Golf Club Manager Backs Charity’s Campaign After Defibrillator Saves His Life M

atthew Wellings ever made – because it saved his life. And now Mr Wellings, the manager of Temple Golf Club in Hurley, near Maidenhead in Berkshire, is backing the Royal Life Saving Society UK’s call for all golf clubs to install one of the lifesaving devices. Just one week after the Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) arrived at the club Mr Wellings suffered a cardiac arrest. He explained: “I passed out in the office. Luckily the club Temple Golf Club manager secretary, Keith Matthew Wellings with the Adderley, whose idea defibrillator which saved his life. it was to buy the defibrillator, was around and he used it to restart my heart and save my life. “He and other members of our staff had just completed a training course on defibrillators so he knew exactly what to do. If we hadn’t bought it and organised the training I probably wouldn’t be here to tell the tale.” Thanks to Mr Adderley’s prompt actions Mr Wellings survived. He was airlifted to hospital following the emergency in 2009 and had a small defibrillator implanted into his body to correct an irregular heartbeat which had caused for his collapse. Others aren’t so lucky. Around 60,000 people suffer a cardiac arrest in the UK every year and fewer than one in ten survive. Yet just 30 per cent of golf clubs are believed to have defibrillators. The Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) and its trading subsidiary IQL UK, which runs training courses on using AEDs, are calling on every course in the country to make sure they have one. IQL UK’s technical officer, Ian Prosser, said that using a defibrillator alongside CPR can significantly

increase someone’s chances of survival. “As soon as someone has a heart attack and goes into cardiac arrest the clock is ticking. The chance of successful defibrillation declines at a rate of more than 10 per cent with each minute of delay before a defibrillator is used.” “It really can improve someone’s chances and survival rates can be as high as 75 per cent,” he added. RLSS UK supplies defibrillators and the Emergency Response – AED course, which trains people to use the equipment and carry out CPR. The charity urged golfers as well as golf club staff to learn the techniques. To find out about buying a defibrillator and RLSS UK’s training courses call 01789 773994 or visit www.rlss.org.uk

Golf Clubs Offered Advice To Survive and Thrive E

ngland Golf is offering a series of recommendations to help golf clubs increase their membership and survive and thrive in a challenging climate. They are contained in the Results Book from the 2014 Golf Club Membership Questionnaire which includes advice to attract new members, retain current members and appeal to junior golfers. The Results Book supports the England Golf Strategic Plan, Raising Our Game, which urges all who care about the game to work together to increase the number of regular golfers, to halt the decline in club membership and strengthen the talent pathway. To address this, it urges clubs to review their membership structures and to offer a golf club experience combining social and playing benefits which outweigh the advantages of independent play. The report finds that the average golf club has 499 members, mostly white and mostly adult males (77%) and that just over half of all members are aged 55plus. Less than a quarter are aged under 35. Women account for only 15% of membership and boys (7%) also outnumber girls (1%). The average adult subscription is £845 for men and £848 for women; £121 for boys and £118 for girls. Clubs have an average of 24 volunteers, most of whom serve on the club committee. Most volunteers are male and are aged over 55.

Over the last two years, clubs have attracted an average of 77 new members, while losing 85: an average decrease of eight per club. To reverse the trend the report recommends: • Attracting new members by breaking down barriers and creating a welcoming club environment. It advises that lowering subscriptions is less likely to attract new members than providing additional benefits or hosting induction days, offering structured coaching or working with County Golf Partnerships. It points out that potential members are often deterred by long-winded, non-transparent joining systems and by the joining fee. • Retaining existing members by ensuring the year-round quality and value of the course and the club environment, which must be attractive to golfers of all generations. It suggests flexible membership packages are arguably the most powerful way of attracting and retaining members: 34% of clubs which offer these increased their membership in the last two years. Intermediate and student membership are influential in retaining members in their 20s and 30s. • Encouraging junior members by making it easy to join. Offering junior tuition and the services of a junior organiser will appeal to youngsters and their parents. A positive experience of junior golf will encourage players to continue their membership into adulthood. There was also much support for simplifying the handicap system, providing greater transparency on how golfers’ affiliation fees are spent, for focusing more on the average club member than on elite players and for promoting the game more clearly to women and juniors. The Results Book can be viewed and downloaded from the England Golf website www.englandgolf.org

Could You Take Four Shots Off Your Handicap This Year? It is a great time to plan for the year ... A good thought is, “Could you take 4 shots off your game in 2015?” That can be a big statement for a lot of players but are there 4 different areas of your game you could get a bit better at that could save you a shot per round? There are lots of different areas your could look at but here are here are 4 areas that you could concentrate on. Shot One

Shot Four

Hit your landing spot on your chipping more often – The key skill on your chipping is hitting your landing spot. Could you get better at hitting your land spot and judging where this is?

Make good contact with the ball – Most players struggle making consistent contact. A good way to start to improve this is to work on hitting half swings focusing on good contact. By developing this will give you a good basis to strike the ball better with all of your clubs. Hitting 50 balls on the range with an 8 iron just focusing on contact could really have an impact on this. I hope this has made a big statement like taking 4 shots off your game seem more achievable.

Shot Two Improve your distance control on your putting – Most 3 putts happen when you misjudge the distance on your first putt. You could change how you practice and instead of putting to a hole, you could do some distance control exercises such as putting to the fringe or between 2 sticks to improve.

Short Game & Putting Schools.

Shot Three Improve your course management – Having a better game plan for how you are going to play a course, especially on a course you play a lot. Many players try to be too ambitious from the tee so maybe playing more conservative, the tee could make a difference. Is there a problem hole that you play differently? - 20 -

Can Golf be Affordable and Fun to Play? Laurence Pithie of Turf Master One says that introducing a larger hole size on ‘entry level’ 9-hole or short-hole courses would make the game less difficult, faster and more fun to play as well as bringing lower operating costs and both maintenance and environmental benefits.

T

here appears to be no shortage of data from recent surveys to note that the popularity of golf is in decline, at least in some quarters. As well as a 12% fall in membership numbers since 2007, one of the more recent surveys indicates that the average age of golfers who play golf at least once a week is now 63. For those in or nearing retirement, the game generally remains popular but for others, especially those in the 25 to 45 age bracket, it is less so. The most popular reasons cited for this shortfall and apparent decline is as follows;

In recent years, other variations of the game or innovations have been introduced such as power golf, adventure golf, foot golf and ‘tee it forward’, while clubs have offered varying types of membership schemes in an effort to attract or retain members who play less frequently. However, few if any of these schemes address the key issues listed above, while participation numbers continue to fall or at best remain level. Perhaps a key indicator of golf’s popularity was realised when Rory McIlroy was beaten into second place at last month’s BBC Sports Personality of The Year and by some margin; this in spite of a spectacular year of tournament victories and being the best British golfer by far this century. Even Rory himself stated that golf takes too long and that the game needs speeded up. Very true, but let’s take a look at what is currently happening in the world of golf. So what should we be doing if we are to attract more golfers, young and old, male and female? Well first we need to recognise that golf is not as popular as it once was and there needs to be a viable alternative that overcomes these key

• Golf is too expensive compared to many other sports and pastimes. • It takes too long to play, with rounds at many courses taking 5 hours or even longer. Those in the 25 to 45 age bracket don’t have the time to spend much of the day on the golf course. • It can be a difficult game to master for many. • Not all clubs/courses have a friendly relaxed atmosphere, especially regarding dress code. • It can become too serious and not enough fun. • It is sometimes viewed as being an elitist sport in many countries, taking up too much land.

Larger golf holes appear to have been used in the past.

concerns. For some this may sound like a radical change but to date, few if any ideas have led to an increase in popularity. Making golf more fun, more affordable and taking up less time to play has to be the key objectives. As well as producing shorter courses, a relatively simple option and one that has been mentioned in the past is to increase the size of the golf hole to around 8 inches (200mm).

Making the Game Less Difficult • Less emphasis on putting and more on general play • More likely to ‘chip’ or putt-in from the edge of the green • More single putts • Less likely to 3 putt • Downhill putts less intimidating

Faster Play • Less time spent putting on the greens • A 3 foot putt becomes a ‘gimme’ • A saving of 2 to 3 mins per green, per fourball = 18 to 27 mins per 9 holes

The perfect place to practice

• Faster play equates to potentially more golfers per day • More golfers = increased revenue

22 bay floodlit driving range

Open 7am - 9pm everyday

9 Hole ‘pay and play’ golf course

• Less putts will lead to fewer issues with greens quality and performance

Clubhouse serving excellent food: Mon - Fri 10am - 3pm & 6pm - 9pm Sat 7.30am - 9pm | Sun 7.30am - 3pm

More Fun to Play • Greater opportunity to hole-out from ‘off the green’ • Less emphasis on putting, more on general play • Holing longer putts adds more excitement • Faster play leads to greater all round enjoyment

We just need to be more open minded in regard to ideas that can stimulate interest and encourage more people to take up golf. Perhaps with the support of some of the leading tournament golfers as well as the governing bodies of the game of golf and the environment, this idea can act as a catalyst for change.

Poor Alignment Will Affect the

A

Swing

lignment may not be one of the most interesting parts of the golf swing, but it is so important to the well being of the swing plane, in my opinion, one of the most important fundamentals in the swing, it controls your automatic collision of the ball and is the major influence of the swing path through impact. Picture 1 shows me aligned poorly, aiming too far to the right as you look as I often do you can see the flag my intended target appears aligned towards my back. The only possible way to hit the ball to this flag

1

2

is to swing over plane and across the ball, normally creating slice spin. This is demonstrated in Picture 2 and 3. With good alignment in Picture 4, the flag appears to my right. This is because the ideal alignment is parallel left (for a right-handed player) the only part that points at the flag is the clubface not the body. You can see this in Picture 5. Now on the downswing, I do not have to swing around my body to find the target, I can simply swing down the plan to hit towards the target.

New Year New Business For Luke L

uke Eggleston has started 2015 by launching a state-of-the-art indoor golf facility in Woodford Green, Essex. His new business was officially unveiled on January 10 by reigning Scottish Senior Open champion – and fellow PGA in England (East) competitor – Mark Davis.

Those who attended the opening can’t fail to have been wowed by the size of Eggleston’s ‘centre’. For starters, it boasts a superb chipping and putting area that covers 850 square feet. Then there is a massive simulation area, including a six by three metre screen – and cutting-edge technology supplied by the GC2 and

HMT systems. The simulator allows every aspect of a golfer’s swing and ball flight to be dissected by Eggleston’s expert eye. In the depths of midwinter, it also gives golfers the chance to ‘play’ any of 15 worldrenowned courses in a warm and dry climate. Eggleston offers a full-support service by providing a top-class workstation, packed with equipment to ensure exact solutions when it comes to the set-up of an individual golfer’s clubs. He said: “I’m extremely excited to have this facility, which is easily accessible from the M11, M25 and the Central Line (London Underground). “Here, a golfer’s whole game can be scrutinised. The aim is that each customer will be offered the ultimate level of choice, accuracy and service.” Eggleston, 41, was previously the head PGA professional at nearby Loughton Golf Club after also working at Canons Brook, Orsett and Wanstead during his career. But since last August, he has thrown himself into preparing for his own venture. This has seen him undertake club-fitting courses with two major manufacturers, as well as earn a Golfsmith Europe diploma in advanced club fitting. Less conventionally, Eggleston has spent considerable time overhauling his own website – www.luke-eggleston.co.uk – and developing the artwork for his own logo. Plus, there were some hard yards to be done marketing his facility. He revealed: “I handed out 4,500 flyers at Canary Wharf alone. I’ve advertised, too, at Westfield in Stratford, Lakeside and Bluewater. “I’ve also had an on-line booking system added to my website – that has just gone ballistic.” Eggleston looks like he will be busy with his sixday a week venture, which is open for business from 9am to 8pm, except on Sundays. Along with this state of the art facility, Luke will continue to improve your game with on-going coaching. His packages cover all aspects of the game allowing your natural swing to be nurtured and specialising in the long game and short game within his facility. Luke confidently looks to get all of his clients reducing their handicaps by 3 or more shots. However, it won’t quite be all work, no play. Eggleston, a smart player on the East circuit, plans to once again line up in the region’s Order of Merit events, as well as contest several pro-ams Sounds like a busy year beckons. - 29 -

Thorndon Park Xmas Fayre Pro-Am The final event of 2014 was played at the delightful Thorndon Park Golf Club and despite the first frost of the winter threatening to cause havoc the event went ahead and was enjoyed by a full field of 28 teams. Scoring was very good considering the length of the course which was playing its full 6500 yards with very little run and John Judd from the home club shared the honours with Brett Taylor from Chelmsford. Both shot 69 which was two under a very difficult par of 71 and enough to win by two shots from Chase Davis of Stapleford Abbotts and Mark Talbott from Thorpe Hall who both came in with a very creditable 71. In the Pro-Am event Mark Stokes from Rayleigh Driving Range led his team to victory with a score of 11 under par beating the team from Chelmsford Golf Club led by Andy Pestell which included amateur James Allen who has recently qualified to play in the Dubai Desert Classic next February. At the prize giving a special award was made to 91 year old Joe Crumpen who has retired this year after acting as official Brett Taylor. starter for many years. Joe has been made an Honorary Vice President of the PGA in Essex and was presented with a blazer by the Captain Mark Bishop.

Jason Levermore Jason continued his remarkable form by winning the Essex Order of Merit yet again by a considerable margin. In addition he won the the National Captain/Pro event in Turkey and followed

that by finishing second in the National PGA playoffs. This performance has ensured his appearance at the PGA Championships at Wentworth in May and also a place in the PGA Cup team in California later this year. Congratulations on an amazing year!

Felixstowe Ferry

An icy wind greeted everyone on our first visit to the drier ground of Suffolk this year. Temperatures hovering around freezing were reduced by the chill factor to several below on the Felixstowe links. Despite the weather there was an excellent turnout and some reasonable scores in very difficult conditions. Jason Levermore started the defence of his Order of Merit title by winning the event with a solid round of level par 72. Two bogeys and two birdies was enough for a one shot victory from three players,Andy Shakespear of the Warren Golf Club; with Sam Willis and Matt Stables both from North Weald also sharing the runners up spot.

In-Depth Coaching For Blind Golfers A

Leicestershire golf professional who has been coaching blind and visually handicapped golfers for 20 years has just held an in-depth session at his home club for the England and Wales Blind Golf Association. Anders Mankert, head pro at Cosby GC, and his teaching assistant James Herbert, introduced newcomers to the game on the club’s wellequipped driving range and on the practice green. The more than 20 blind golfers and their sighted guides were led by Barry Ritchie, the EWBGA captain, and volunteer helpers were from the Lions Club in Coventry. Mankert said: “First of all we went on to the range and within 20 minutes they were all hitting golf balls. Only one of them had ever played golf before –just a little before losing his sight. “First of all we worked on their swings. Then, after lunch, we focused on putting and ran a competition which they enjoyed. So it was a highly successful day and we hope at least some of them will continue to develop an interest in the game. “My experience over the years has shown just how much enjoyment golfers of all ages, men and women alike, do get out of golf, especially, of course, with an enthusiastic guide to help them into the correct position and give them confidence to hit their shots. “The 3 different categories for blind and visually handicapped golfers means they can play and compete in their individual sections – from totally blind to those with some vision. I enjoy teaching them and helping them to achieve their targets in the sport, and would urge anyone who thinks golf may appeal to them to try it for themselves. “It is also rewarding to be a guide because they are so crucial in enabling their player to get the very most out of his or her game.” Mankert has coached many totally blind golfers who have competed in major tournaments around the world. Just before this coaching session for newcomers to the game, he gave a regular lesson to Billy McAllister , the totally blind world No.4, who travelled to Leicestershire from his home in Sussex, with B2 golfer Andy Gilford, who is developing his game.

Mankert, who has just been made joint runnerup in a national golf magazine’s Club Golf Professional of the Year awards. added: “I am sure there are a lot of blind and visually handicapped people who would really enjoy the challenge of playing golf and there are lots of targets for them to achieve.” England and Wales Blind Golf Association www.blindgolf.co.uk

Report

P.G.A. Show E

very January the golfing world descends on Orlando for the biggest golf show on the planet,The P.G.A. Merchandise Show. Traditionally, this has been where golf companies have launched their new product for the coming season, however, recently this has not been the case. Over the past few years, golf companies have launched a product at strategic points throughout the year instead of waiting for January. Although this means very few golf clubs are launched at the show it still allows for the attendees to see the whole range of products and for the companies to lay on the glitz and glamour you would come to expect. Huge TV screens show videos of their players hitting the ball further with the new product over the old, in fact, one company actually had both the ball and the player exploding huge craters has the ball hit the ground, and the player kept walking to find the new irons out hit his ‘gamer’ by 21 yards. For me, this is all fun, I love the fact that there is so much entertainment around equipment. It’s a great video – even if not perhaps entirely true. This goes on from stand to stand in the ever jostling race to be the hottest golf Company. One thing that never ceases to amaze me is how many different ways there are to make (or lose) money from the great game of golf. Everything from customised belts to a bespoke cigar made just for your golf club are on show, and these stands are busy. I think that’s where America differs from the UK, golf courses have a higher

profile and are far more individual than those in the UK.Whilst I was away I played in a golf day, and I would estimate 50% of those who played purchased a shirt from the pro shop proudly sporting the club's crest. Imagine that happening in the UK? For me this year technology was the big thing. It seemed a never-ending supply of launch monitors, cameras, gadgets and gizmos for either club fitting or coaching. Now, these products are

- 38 -

not cheap by any means but the stands were packed with professionals either buying their first or upgrading their current equipment. If you think about it, this would only be necessary if the product was both required from the Professional’s perspective and expected from the consumer’s perspective. Golfer’s are probably more ‘tech savvy’ then ever when it comes to learning and their equipment. Many Golfers will no longer except ‘standard’ equipment or the ‘one shaft fits all’ mentality to the point that one of the major manufacturers are actually offering seven different shaft options as standard with no up-charge with the product not being allowed to sell online as they believe the product needs to be fitted to get the best from it – a breath of fresh air even if it’s a little late. Another interesting addition to this year's equipment offering is the relaunch of the Hogan brand. For those of a certain age, you will remember the quality and prestige of the original equipment but in today's market the latest offering may be ‘technology deficient’ against some other clubs. A very traditional forged head would make the clubs an easy emotional purchase but there is

one aspect that makes these clubs genius. For the first time in a while these clubs have no numbers on them, simply the loft of the iron. Nothing too exciting here but it’s the fact that the irons are available in two degree increments throughout the set that is interesting as this allows the golfer to choose what decade he or she would like to be in – 80’s being the weakest, 90’s being the middle ground and the strongest lofts bringing the golfer up to date. It will be interesting to see how many golfers choose distance over tradition? Another good piece of news from the show is that certain manufacturers are changing from a one year to a two-year product life cycle on their irons. I think drivers will change on a yearly basis as companies keep pushing to find the longest driver ever, but stability in the iron market can only be good thing. One thing I think the internet has done is make golf companies very aware of what their customers are saying as a bashing on an internet forum can really hurt. All in all, the overall atmosphere at the show was very buoyant with many professionals, including myself, looking forward to the coming season.

Happy New Year to all Essex Golfers

It is the start of a new year and a new golfing season and the Essex Golf Union will have a new President and Company Secretary/Treasurer following our AGM to be held at Upminster Golf Club on the 5 February 2015. Details will be in the next edition of Essex Golfer. Competitions – Just a reminder that as usual all competition entries will be posted on our website during the year. Entry forms for The Keating Trophy are up now and payment can be made on-line.

County Coaching 2014 proved to be an incredibly successful year for the Essex Golf Union U18 Boy’s squad. The talented and hardworking team got off to a flying start by securing the South East Team Championship in May and continued in their winning ways by going on to be crowned England Golf County Boys Champions in August at Sandiway Golf Club, Cheshire. And just for good measure in between they also collected winner’s medals as SouthEast Boys Foursomes Champions! Throughout 2015 the Essex Golf Union coaching team will again be working with promising young golfers from across the entire county. A team of nine coaches provide developmental and performance coaching to nearly 200 children from the age of 9 through to 18. The coaching programme is carefully structured to be appropriate for the participation and developmental needs of the young golfers as they progress through the stages of their golfing journey. At all times the coaching team is tasked with delivering training sessions which are engaging and challenging, but also complement and support the technical work already being done by personal coaches. The Essex Golf Union has proven it can achieve outstanding success with its young golfers but it would like to do more. For this reason the Essex Golf Union is actively looking for partners to provide sponsorship and additional support for its coaching programmes. If you are interested in supporting Essex golf and would like to discuss how a partnership can benefit both parties please contact County Secretary Lynda Cartwright on 01376 500998 or info@essexgolfunion.org For up-to-date County golf news and forthcoming fixtures please visit the EGU website, find us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter.

Charley Hull is Youngest Winner of LET Order of Merit C

harley Hull has made history as the youngest winner of the 2014 Ladies European Tour ISPS HANDA Order of Merit title, just 12 months after being named Rookie of the Year. The 18 year old from England capped her second season on tour with a tied fifth place finish in the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters on the Majlis Course at Emirates Golf Club. With season’s earnings of €263,096.69, she finished €29,808 ahead of second placed Gwladys Nocera. “It’s good to win,” said Hull. “I didn’t really know coming into this week. Yeah, just the back nine today, I just thought don’t make any silly mistakes. I doubled the first but got two birdies on the bounce back so pretty happy with myself there. “I went double, birdie, birdie, bogey, birdie. So it was an interesting front nine. But towards the end of the back nine, I really got the feeling with my woods off the tee. I started feeling so much more confident. Just working on getting a bit more width on my swing. I definitely feel a lot

more confident.” Hull, who was the youngest woman ever to compete in the international Solheim Cup matches in 2013, continued to impress in 2014. On March 16, four days before her 18th birthday, she won her first professional title at the Lalla Meryem Cup in Morocco. She went on to record eight additional top 10 finishes during the season. This included two seconds at the Sanya Ladies Open in China and Ladies German Open presented by Marriott, as well as third in the Turkish Airlines Ladies Open. www.ladieseuropeantour.com

Lee Westwood Winner to Take Next Step Towards World Dream at Donnafugata

L

ee Westwood Golf School (LWGS) 2014 Overall Order of Merit winner Ben Purshouse will head to the five-star Donnafugata Golf Resort & SPA this year as he takes the next steps on the road towards fulfilling his ultimate ambition of becoming a world golfing superstar. Purshouse is dreaming of a career on the European and PGA Tour and plans to visit the deluxe Sicilian resort in the coming months after winning a five-star holiday to Donnafugata thanks to his success at the LGWS in Cheshire. The 20-year-old golfer, who currently plays off scratch at Esery Golf Club in France, and 16-yearold Megan Henry, who won the Overall Order of Merit title at the LWGS in Essex, both claimed luxury four-night holidays for two people to Sicily after taking the top prize in their competitions. Donnafugata’s wide array of five-star facilities include two 18-hole championship golf courses while the resort opened a new Darren Clarke Centre of Excellence last spring – the only one of its kind in continental Europe.

As well as enjoying four nights’ bed and breakfast accommodation, Purshouse, Henry and their guests will also be treated to three rounds of golf each on a choice of Donnafugata’s two courses, the Links and Parkland – host of the Sicilian Open in 2011. Purshouse, who lives in Switzerland on the outskirts of Geneva and has spent the last two years at the LWGS, said: “I’m really looking forward to playing the courses at Donnafugata and spending some time relaxing at the resort, including sampling the famous Sicilian food! “A friend of mine has been there before and has told me that it's very nice. I haven't decided who I am going to take with me yet. I might take my brother, my dad, my coach or even my girlfriend. “My immediate aims in golf are fairly straightforward, to keep practising hard every day until I am good enough to compete at a Tour level. I am focusing on reducing my handicap to gain access to bigger amateur events, where

courses at the end of the academic year. Guy Roberts, director of golf at Donnafugata Golf Resort & SPA, said: “Donnafugata is proud to feature some of the best new golf facilities and we’re looking forward to welcoming Ben and Megan in the coming months and helping them further their golfing careers.” Donnafugata Golf Resort & SPA has won widespread acclaim across the golf industry since opening in 2010 and its Darren Clarke Centre of Excellence offers a variety of tuition packages and individual lessons for golfers of all abilities aged six and above.

there are a lot of World Amateur Golf Ranking points to be won, which will allow me to gain a good amateur status before trying Qualifying School in 2017-2018. “I have one goal in life and that's to be a fulltime member of the European or PGA Tour and make it into the top 50 of the world. I won't stop trying until I have achieved this and I truly believe that it's not a matter of ‘if’ but ‘when’ I will accomplish this.” While Purshouse is aiming to use his Donnafugata trip to further his professional dream, Henry will use her holiday to Sicily to work on getting her handicap down. The 12-handicapper, who is a member at Epping and Chigwell golf clubs and won the 2014 Essex Overall Order of Merit title playing off a handicap of 17, said: “This is the first time I have won a competition like this. I have been to Sicily before on a cruise but not got past the port. I am really looking forward to the trip. “I’m not sure who is coming with me, I will let my parents fight that one out! I am looking forward to warm weather and great golf. I have looked at the Donnafugata website and can't wait to get there!” The Lee Westwood Golf School has gone from strength to strength since being launched in 2010, with more than 80 students currently attending the schools, which operate a two-year golf and education programme offering a BTEC Extended National Diploma in Sport (equivalent to three ‘A’ Levels) for young golfers aged 16 and over. This year’s LWGS Overall Order of Merit saw youngsters compete in a series of monthly events at its two regional schools in Cheshire and Essex, with the final competition held on four different

Time to Boss the Opposition as Colchester Golfer Records Elusive Hole-in-One at Birch Grove

C R A I G L O C K WO O D

Craig Lockwood is the Head Professional and Manager of Golf at Forrester Park Golf and Country Club. Favourite golf course you have ever played? Royal St George’s Best golfing tip you have ever received? Best tip I ever got given as a youngster had nothing to do with technique. I always remember as a kid I was told to hit it better not harder. Think about it, it makes a lot of sense. Find middle of the club rather than smashing it. The golfer you admire most? I grew up playing as a junior in the Tiger era, so it has to be Tiger Woods. He re kindled the sport to now what it is today. But also more recently Erik Compton, I admire hugely for his desire to not be beaten. He has had two heart transplants and is now mixing with the big boys on the PGA tour. Most embarrassing golfing moment? Falling in a bunker when I was giving a playing lesson. Which 3 other people would be in your favourite fourball? My Dad for the banta, Tiger just to see how it was done and Happy Gilmore, I don't need a reason for this one. Best round of golf ever? Level par at Royal St George’s in hurricane winds and rain. It felt like I had shot 59 on that day. Sometimes level is a good score.

T

he time was right for a Colchester golfer when he scored a hole-in-one during a recent club competition to be rewarded with a limitededition BOSS watch as recognition for the achievement. Terry Young, 65, scored his ace on the 150-yard, par-three fifth at Birch Grove GC, and the 19handicapper was rewarded with membership of the exclusive BOSS Watches H1 Club and a specially-commissioned, commemorative timepiece. He said: “It was a really good tee shot. I hit it straight at the flag, over the pond.” - 49 -

How long have you been a PGA professional? 7 years. What is your favourite meal? Anything American I love a restaurant called Grand Central. What career would you have choosen if not a golf pro? Tough question as I had never thought of doing anything else even as a youngster. But I think I would have worked in the city doing something involving numbers as maths was always a strength. C

allaway Golf Company announces the Chrome Soft golf ball, ushering in a new ball category — players no longer have to choose between feel and hitting it further. Chrome Soft is the only ball that has the proprietary SoftFast Core with low compression and a Tour Urethane cover. This leads to low spin off the tee for incredible ball speed and exceptional distance. It also lets players compress the ball on iron shots for incredibly soft feel, and provides excellent control and consistency so you can get aggressive on shots into the green. No other ball combines all of these things in one package, and our optimized aerodynamics makes it fly even better in all conditions. With Chrome Soft, you don’t have to choose between feel and hitting it further anymore. This is the ball that changed the ball. They also have adjustable weights (3g and 30g) that can be used to move the weight forward for a low spinning ball flight that’s great off the tee, or to move the weight back for higher launch and more forgiveness. Big Bertha Alpha 815 Hybrids The Big Bertha Alpha 815 Hybrids focus on a more controlled, penetrating trajectory for better players, along with ball speed all across the face and loft and lie adjustability. Sun Mountain Launches Three-In-One Golf Trolley

S

un Mountain, the No.1 premium golf bag brand, has added to its impressive list of ‘industry firsts’ with the launch of the first ever model to combine a trolley, bag and seat in one compact unit. The three-wheeled Sun Mountain Combo Cart is designed for golfers who would prefer the convenience of keeping their clubs with the trolley and storing at the clubhouse or together in the car boot. Made from lightweight aluminium, the Combo Cart boasts an extremely strong frame that supports the bag and seat with body weight, whilst maintaining a streamlined trolley that takes up no more space than a regular Tour bag when folded. Sun Mountain – which launched the first stand bag in 1986 and the first waterproof bag in 2007 – has created an innovative design that allows golfers to fold down the unit easily, with the front wheel going under the bag between the rear wheels and the handle down the back of the bag. The rear wheels then slide inwards to produce an impressively sleek unit. “When folded, the Combo Cart stands up like a normal golf bag and takes up less than half the room normally required to store the trolley and bag separately,” said Seth Enes, Sun Mountain Chief Designer. “It’s very easy to put into action too – golfers just have to pull the bottom wheel out, release the rear wheels and set the handle height at a comfortable height. Then you’re ready to go! Billericay Golfers Head to Morocco in Quest for Prestigious Title

A

pair of amateur golfers from Billericay heads off to Morocco this month (February 8-14) looking to secure a prestigious national title in the grand final of the Morocco Matchplay, powered by HowDidiDo. The expenses-paid trip is reward for the duo’s efforts in battling their way through local rounds and a regional final at Manor House GC, Castle Combe, during the 2014 seniors’ event, in a competition open to any golfer who is a member of an affiliated club with an officially recognised handicap. Five-handicapper Bob Turner, 58, who works in the banking industry, and Steve Adkins, 52 - both members at Stock Brook Manor GC – will enjoy complimentary return flights to Morocco, sixnights’ accommodation at both the stunning, fivestar L’Amphitrite Palace hotel, in Skhirat – with its own Atlantic Ocean beach – and five rounds of golf, at the prestigious Royal Golf Dar Essalam, which hosted the last Moroccan Open in 2001, won by Ryder Cup star Ian Poulter, and the Tony Jacklin Casablanca.

Participants will also receive a welcome reception and cocktail evening, and a final night presentation gala dinner. Company director Adkins, who plays off a handicap of two, said: “I’m really looking forward to a nice break in the winter.” Four competitions culminate at the grand final, sponsored this year by the Moroccan National Tourist Office and known formerly as the HowDidiDo National Matchplay Championship: singles, pairs, mixed pairs and senior pairs, with a total of 32 golfers, from across the UK, ultimately fighting it out for the titles. Each pair will have played up to four qualifying rounds merely to reach the regional final, with the knockout rounds taking place between June and September, and the regional finals in October. www.howdidido.com www.howdididomatchplay.co.uk

Barking Abbey Golf Academy

S

eptember 2008 was the launch date of The Barking Abbey Golf Academy at Crowlands Golf Centre, the sole purpose of working a sports club and a leading local school was to have pupils continue into sixth form education and play the sport they most wanted to pursue as a career. At NO COST to the parents or pupils and funded solely by the school and golf club. We are now in 2015 and have 11 children enrolled for the course with Phil Ryder the school's teacher and main drive to keep children educated through sport, the breakdown is 8 boys 3 girls. Phil says “priorities are 1st class education at an award-winning sports college. We wanted to develop high standards of tuition with England and county coaches. We provide the strength and conditioning with the schools full time physio. With the Btec or A level tuition, this enables pupils to take decisions about their future.” In the past, the school club link has seen pupils go into the PGA degree programme, and take

employment at facilities that include, Brocket Hall, Wanstead GC, Top Meadow and Crowlands to name a few. Pupils have also gone on to higher university education and some now play golf professionally.

So with over 35 kids over the 7 year period we are hoping this is something that continues to grow, and we see more employment opportunities given to aspiring young golfers. We Find that now is the time that pupils and parents are starting to think about what is best for their child so it is going to be a busy couple of months talking to parents, If there is any questions about this article that you would like to know Phil will be Happy to discuss everything with you. Callaway Line-Up of European Staff Professionals For 2015

C

allaway has announced its full 2015 European Staff Professional line-up, including 24 players across the European and Challenge Tours, who, between them, have more than 50 European Tour wins. Eleven players have re-signed for Callaway following a stellar season on the 2014 European Tour, which saw the company’s Staff Professionals notch up eight wins in total, including those by Europe-based players: Thomas Bjørn, Pablo Larrazábal, Fabrizio Zanotti, David Horsey, Marc Warren and Oliver Wilson; each of whom remain committed to Callaway in 2015 with Horsey, Larrazábal, Wilson and Zanotti among those extending their contract. Callaway Staff Professionals also dominated the last three European Tour events of 2014, with ‘Iceman’, Henrik Stenson, closing out the season in style with a second consecutive victory in the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai, followed by Danny Willett and Branden Grace becoming the first two winners out of the block on The European Tour’s 2015 schedule, in South Africa. In addition to the well-established European Tour players and winners, rising Challenge Tour

star, Toby Tree, a 20-year-old from Chichester, UK, who set the amateur circuit ablaze before turning professional in 2014, is also named among Callaway’s 2015 European Staff Professional lineup, highlighting the company’s continued commitment to supporting up-and-coming talent. Peter Harrison, Callaway Director of Tour Relations, said: “The strength of the 2014 product was highlighted by a number of Staff Professional wins occurring immediately after putting new equipment in the bag. “Six out of our eight wins on The European Tour last season were made by players using a new Big Bertha Driver, while Nicolas Colsaerts topped the long drive statistics with an average of 312.6 yards – not to mention recording the longest ever drive on The European Tour – all 447 yards . On the back of two staffer wins already this season, including Branden Grace who used the recently launched Big Bertha Alpha 815 Double Black Diamond Driver, 2015 stands to be another exciting year for Callaway in the winners’ circle.” www.callawaygolf.com

Congressional Gold Medal for Jack Nicklaus U

.S. Senators Rob Portman (R-Ohio) and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) have succeeded in their drive for legislation to award the Congressional Gold Medal to the “Golden Bear,” Ohio native Jack Nicklaus, in recognition of his service to the nation in promoting excellence, good sportsmanship, and philanthropy passed the U.S. Senate. For over two centuries, Congress has awarded gold medals as an expression of public appreciation for the contributions of its most distinguished citizens. The legislation now heads to the President’s desk for signature. “I am proud that this son of Ohio will be honored with a Congressional Gold Medal for his extraordinary life and achievements,” Portman said. “Jack Nicklaus is a legend, and without a doubt the greatest golfer of all time.Yet in addition to the Golden Bear’s career in golf, he is a dedicated philanthropist who has made a difference in communities across America. Together with his wife Barbara, Jack has positively impacted the lives of thousands of children and their families through the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation, and other initiatives.” “This is a fitting tribute for a man who has given so much to his community and country,” Brown said. “Known across the world for his records on the golf course, it’s his hometown Ohio roots that ground Jack Nicklaus’ lasting legacy. Named by Sports Illustrated and ESPN as one of the greatest living athletes, the Golden Bear will now receive Congress’ greatest honor. I applaud Jack and his wife Barbara for all they have done and continue to do to improve the lives of others and I congratulate him on this honor.” “I had the fortunate pleasure in 2012 to attend and participate in Arnold’s Congressional Gold Medal ceremony, and I witnessed how special and meaningful it was to him,” Nicklaus said. “I am honored and humbled to have the opportunity to experience that, as well, and to be a part of a very special group of past recipients. The game of golf has been an incredible gift to my family and me. It not only gave me a livelihood, but it provided Barbara and me with a vehicle to give back and to

impact other lives, especially those of children and families in need.To our leaders in both the House and the Senate who supported this extremely kind gesture, I offer my most sincere and heartfelt appreciation. God bless America.” The Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom are the highest awards bestowed on a United States civilian. Nicklaus was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005. He and Arnold Palmer are the only golfers in history to receive both honors. Jack Nicklaus was born in Columbus, Ohio, and went on to win a record 18 professional major championships as part of his 73 PGA Tour victories. He became one of the world’s most acclaimed golf course designers, with almost 300 golf courses designed worldwide. Nicklaus is also known as a devoted family man and, along with wife Barbara, a passionate philanthropist with a focus on children’s healthcare. Nicklaus founded the Memorial Tournament, which is a PGA Tour golf tournament played on his design at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. Since its inception in 1976, the Memorial Tournament has distributed over $20 million to many Central Ohio charities, including Nationwide Children’s Hospital and its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. www.nicklaus.com

Golfing Crowds in Scotland Come Out in Force M

ore than 340,000 spectators attended golf events in Scotland in 2014 during an unprecedented year which saw The Ryder Cup held at Gleneagles as well as The Junior Ryder Cup and five other top professional tournaments across the country. And with no fewer than nine professional events already confirmed across the length and breadth of the country in 2015, including The Open at St Andrews, the figure is likely to be well in excess of 300,000 again next year. In 2014, a year in which Scotland reaffirmed its position as the Home of Golf and the perfect stage for events, a total of 240,000 spectators descended on the PGA Centenary Course at Gleneagles in September for the best-ever attended golf event in Scotland. With other events such as the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open (Royal Aberdeen), the SSE Scottish Seniors Open (Fairmont St Andrews), the Scottish Hydro Challenge (Spey Valley), the Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open (Archerfield) and the Dunhill Links Championships (St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns) drawing impressive crowds, the total attendance over the course of the year tops 340,000. It is believed to be the second-highest year for golf event attendance in Scotland’s history, behind only 2007 when The Open, Women’s British Open and The Senior Open Championship were all held in Scotland alongside three main European Tour events. Now as the focus moves to 2015, VisitScotland, which supports a multitude of golf tournaments through its events directorate EventScotland, says it will be another bumper year for golfing spectators in Scotland, the Home of Golf. “We’ve always said that 2014 is not the end and that is illustrated perfectly by the tremendous 2015 we have in store for golf in Scotland. There is simply no better way to follow up 2014 than with The Open at St Andrews, the Women’s British Open at Turnberry and the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open at Gullane alongside many other top-class events which will bring spectators from all over the world to Scotland to watch and play golf.” The golf tourism economy is currently worth £220m annually to the Scottish economy and

supports more than 4,400 jobs. Golf tourism also has benefits to other industries such as the accommodation, retail and food & beverage sectors with golf tourists spending on average 2.5 times more than a regular tourist. Research shows that for every £1 spent on green fees by golf visitors, an extra £5 is spent on extras such as accommodation, food and retail.
