LUNA LANDING AT STOKE BY NAYLAND AS SANTIAGO TAKES PGA SENIORS TITLE Spain’s Santiago Luna evoked the spirit of Seve Ballestoros after eagling the 16th on his way to a brilliant final round of seven-under-par 64 to win the ISPS Handa PGA Seniors Championship at Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa. The Madrid golfer revealed he had been thinking of the late Ballesteros throughout the last day which eventually saw him edge out Steen Tinning by two strokes after the Dane had initially carved out a four shot lead in the early part of the round. Luna picked up four birdies on the front nine and the horse loving golfer reeled in Tinning with birdies on 12 and 14 before galloping clear with that decisive eagle on 16 as he finished on 14under-par, two clear of Tinning and four clear of Mark Mouland who also had a 64. Victory secured Luna his second European Senior Tour title after pipping Sam Torrance to the Scottish Senior Open last year and he pocketed a cheque for €37,000 of the total 235,000 euro pot. “I was definitely thinking of Seve over certain shots today,” said Luna. “It’s unbelievable to win such a prestigious tournament as this. I played great, with few mistakes and tried to be in the right place and make a few putts and that was the key.”

This exciting finish concluded a very successful 4 days at Stoke by Nayland and the one hour highlights of each day were televised on Sky Sports TV. The event was also featured on both BBC Look East and ITV Anglia news, and in the local press. The championship was preceded by a Pro Am during which the top 30 professionals played in teams with 3 amateurs and gave them top tips on the way round. Former Ryder Cup captain, Mark James, played in a team with BBC Look East’s Stewart White and Stoke by Nayland Managing Director, Susanna Rendall. On the second day of the championship James was leading the field with 8 under, only to be overtaken by Tinning and finally Luna over the weekend.

Jan’s one-woman drive inspires new golfers Essex golfer Jan Tallentire is running a one-woman drive to get new players into the game – and in the space of just six weeks she persuaded 80 ladies to have a go. Jan is ladies’ captain at Warley Park Golf Club, near Brentwood, and she’s running four Get into golf days for women to give them a taste of the game – and share her pleasure in the sport. “She has done a fantastic job,” said Craig Harman, a PGA coach at Warley Park, who has helped teach the women the basics of the game. “It’s a massive achievement,” commented Helen Tarttelin of the Essex Golf Partnership.
“We are sure that lots of women would love the chance to play golf – and Jan has proved it.” Jan laid on a great experience. The visitors were greeted with coffee and a goodie bag from the club, containing balls, tees and a ball maker. Next was two hours of coaching with PGA professionals, followed by lunch. Royal Portrush Invited to Host the Open Championship The Open Championship is set to return to Northern Ireland for the first time in over 60 years and only the second time in its more than 150-year history. Royal Portrush has been invited to stage The Open by The R&A and the County Antrim club’s members will now be asked to ratify the proposal to enable preparations to begin for what is expected to be the largest sporting event ever to be held in Northern Ireland. Peter Dawson, Chief Executive of The R&A, said: “Much work lies ahead to prepare for the Open’s return. There are planned course enhancements – and we’ve been very much helped by Martin Ebert of MacKenzie and Ebert golf course architects in this – and infrastructure development in terms of television compounds, contractors’ compounds, road systems and so on. “These will require ratification by the club’s members and by the planning authorities, and so we will not be able to announce a date for the first event until these permissions are in place. 2019 is the earliest it can be, but it may be that we have to wait a year or two longer than that.” The Open is golf’s oldest and most international Major Championship. It has a broadcast reach of over 500 million households around the world and a record 4,468 hours of television coverage of The Open Championship at Muirfield was monitored in 2013. Based on independent research The Championship is likely to deliver a combined
economic impact and destination marketing benefit of £70 million for Northern Ireland. The First Minister Peter Robinson said, “This is wonderful news, not only for Royal Portrush Golf Club but for the whole of Northern Ireland. The decision to bring The Open back to Northern Ireland is a tremendous vote of confidence in the game here and follows the huge success of the Irish Open in 2012, the first in European Tour history to sell out. The R&A’s decision to invite Portrush to join The Open rota is a ringing endorsement of Northern Ireland and I know we will deliver an event that we can all be proud of.” The deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness said, “I welcome the official confirmation today by The R&A that The Open will return to Royal Portrush. This announcement will create much anticipation and excitement as the thought of our local golfers challenging for the Claret Jug on home soil is set to become a reality. Hosting The Open will leave a lasting imprint on Royal Portrush and I wish everyone involved in the planning and preparation every success and assure them of the full support of the Executive.” The Enterprise, Trade and Investment Minister Arlene Foster added, “The Open’s arrival on the north coast will tell the world what we already know – that not only is Northern Ireland home to three Major winning golfers. www.TheOpen.com

Make more putts by Better Aim & Contact!! Aiming the putter face correctly can be more difficult than you would think and a large percentage of golfers do this incorrectly. This is hugely due to the fact that you are standing to the side of the ball, and you are not looking directly down the target line. For instance, imagine if had to play pool and instead of looking directly down the cue you had your head to side. This would make aiming the cue much more difficult. You have to train your eyes to what the correct aim will be.You will need some feedback on what correct aim is and will receive this by using some of the below drills. Aiming the Putter Face – The most important element is to aim the club face correctly. By aiming the clubface correctly at address it will be simpler to return the club to a square position at impact. Use an alignment stick as a reference point to
Aim the putter face at the target.
Drill: Use the line on the ball – Most Golf balls have a line marked on them, or you can mark a line on the ball using a marker pen. You can stand behind the ball and line the ball up to your target using this line. On a straight putt, this will be straight at the hole or on a breaking putt; it will be Use the line on the ball to aid at a break point. lining up the face correctly.
Drill: Putt along chalk line – At most DIY stores you will be able to get a builder's chalk line and believe it or not this is a great aid to help improve your putting. If you draw a approximately 10-foot line on a straight putt on the putting green and then putt along this line. The chalk line and the line on your putter will give you a clear indication of where you are aiming. You will also see how well you can roll the ball along this line, and it will give you a clear mental image of what you have to do to roll the ball into the Putt along a chalk line. hole. Drill: Ask a partner to check your aim – Ask a friend to check your alignment. Tell them where you think you are aiming and then get their feedback. Try this on a number of different putts and notice if there are any patterns to your aiming. Making Good Contact – Like on full shots you want to hit the ball out of the centre of the putter so that you transfer a consistent amount of energy to the ball. If you hit the ball out of the toe or the heel of the putter, you won’t transfer the correct amount of energy to the ball meaning that your distance control will be inconsistent. Also, your

direction will be incorrect as putts hit on the heel will start to the left and putts hit on the toe will start to the right due to the clubface twisting when struck incorrectly. Drill: Putt between 2 tees – On a four-foot putt put two tees in the ground just wider than the width of your putter. Then put a ball slightly in front of the tees and make some putts. To hit the ball out of the centre the putter you will have to miss the tees on the forward stroke.

In August 2013, former Ryder Cup captain, Bernard Gallacher collapsed during a dinner at a hotel on the outskirts of Aberdeen Bernard had suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. Fortunately, the hotel had a defibrillator. Thanks to the immediate action of staff with CPR and early live-saving shocks from a defibrillator, he survived. He then went on to make a full recovery and has had an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) fitted to prevent further cardiac arrests. Many others are not as fortunate. Each year 100,000 people die from sudden cardiac arrest in the UK, causing more deaths than lung cancer, breast cancer and AIDs combined. CPR and early defibrillation with an AED (automated external defibrillator) can increase sudden cardiac arrest survival from 5% to over 50%. Drawing on his own personal experience, in partnership with the Professional Golfers’
Association and Arrhythmia Alliance, Bernard decided to launch the Bernard Gallacher Defibrillator campaign to support the placement of public-access defibrillators at golf clubs across the UK to ensure that everyone has access to life-saving equipment in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest. Figures published in a recent survey identified that there were more than 3,000 golf courses and a further 840 independent driving ranges across the UK. These serve more than 4 million people. Currently just 30% of golf clubs have a defibrillator. It is hoped that thanks to the Bernard Gallacher Defibrillator Campaign every golf club in the UK will have access to a public-access defibrillator by the end of 2014.

SPEED IS YOUR FRIEND NOT YOUR ENEMY I always start my golf schools by asking the group a few questions regarding what they would like to achieve during their week. Invariably consistency is number one on the list but always closely followed by distance. The devil in me then askes “ok hands up for more distance” always the majority put their hands up. I quickly follow this by “who is trying to slow their swing down?” of course you have guessed it but all the same hands go up! This is such a massive contradiction quite simply the faster you can move the club-head the further the ball will travel, Luke Donald club speed is measured at around 110 mph Dustin Johnston around 117 mph, Dustin Johnston extra speed equates to more yards of the tee. So rather than trying to slow your swing down, it might be a great idea to create more speed. Work with an alignment stick and practice this drill each day.
Picture 1 setting up with the stick, make sure that it is hovering a few inches above the ground, (we do not want to hit the ground as we swing with the stick). Picture 2 loading the top of my backswing, it is worth noting that the speed you create on the backswing is irrelevant, the ball gets no benefit and you are only finding a spot from which you can move forward. Picture 3 swinging down and through, as I reach this point I can hear a loud swishing of the stick moving quickly through the air, the louder you can hear the faster you are moving. Picture 4 I arrive at my balanced finish. So hopefully another golfing myth has been eradicated, find out more about how to improve your play by visiting me at my Essex based academy at Forrester Park or call me on 07801 428 174. The Great Triumvirate and The Open Championship of 1914! The date is June 1914, and The First World War is looming in the very near distance. There are 3 men who have 5 Open Championships each. They are James Braid, J H Taylor and Harry Vardon.Who was going to make it 6? The date of The Championship was the 19th and 20th June and was played over 36 holes a day. 72 holes in a 2 day period was no easy feat, especially when playing for the coveted Claret Jug coping in a strong breeze albeit sunny, which would test the mind and body. After round one Harry Vardon had a 1 shot lead over both Taylor and Braid with a 73 to their 74s. At the end of day one and 2 rounds Vardon was on 150, Taylor on 152 and Braid on 156. Harry's nearest rival was an unknown player called James Ockendon on 151. The third round saw a change in the leader after a great struggle. J H Taylor who shot 74 was now the leader by 2 from Vardon, who took 78 and James Braid was 8 behind after also a 78. Unless Braid had a miracle, he would not win number 6 and after shooting 82 his challenge was over. So it was Taylor vs Vardon for number 6. Who was going to do it? With huge crowds watching this group, it would be a tense atmosphere. Things happened very early in the 4th round. Taylor on the 3rd got distracted by a photographer and dropped a stroke to Vardon. However, the 4th was more dramatic with J H going into the water and taking 7 and Harry taking 4. By the 11th, Vardon was in the lead by 5 shots. Although J H Taylor made some comeback, Harry
Vardon won his Sixth Open Championship by 3 shots on a total of 306 to Taylor's 309 and a winner's prize of ÂŁ50. He made golfing history. That early part of the 4th round proved decisive, and the drama of The Open Championship would not be played for another 6 years. Neither of 'The Great Triumvirate' would ever win The Open again after The First World War. The War brought to an end a great period for Taylor, Braid and Vardon. The Open Championship has seen many great champions since 1920. 3 time champions are Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Gary Player, Henry Cotton, Bobby Jones. 4 times champion is Walter Hagen and 5 times are Peter Thomson and Tom Watson, who came so close to winning his sixth Open at Turnberry 2009 taking 5 on the last and losing in the play off. Harry Vardon still holds the record a 100 years since he set it. Will it be broken? I think now it will never be equalled, let alone broken. Did you know that Vardon, Braid and Taylor established The Professional G o l f e r s ' Association (PGA) of which I am a member? T h e s e gentlemen created golfing history, but they brought about an organisation that I am proud to be part of. The Open is being played this year at Hoylake (Royal Liverpool) on the 17th-20th July. Warren Sargent, PGA Professional, Epping Golf and The Essex

Juniors Get The Chance To Go On Tour Coastal Golf Academy (CGA) have been successful in arranging with their venue clubs a unique opportunity for the juniors from each of their clubs. This year has seen the launch of the Coastal Pass and Tour. The pass allows juniors access to the clubs they are not members of, including a round a month and to play in 6 junior competitions at each club during the year. This has proven really popular and given juniors the chance to gain experience of playing other courses and most importantly meet other juniors who enjoy playing the game. Running alongside the pass is a Tour which has generously been sponsored by AJS energy in Clacton. They are a family run business and have a son, who is one of the juniors from Millers Barn, so have been very kind to get involved. The sponsorship has gone towards the tour prizes at each event.
The Tour consists of 9 events during the whole year, across all four of the clubs, Frinton, Harwich, Colne Valley and Millers Barn Golf Park. So far, there have been 3 events with over 30 juniors members at each event competing. Juniors have to have a handicap of 36 or below to play, with juniors who have not quite achieved it playing at the back of the field getting ready to make the step up. The Tour has a Stableford, gross and girls order of merit running with the champions being crowned in November at the final event at Frinton. The next event is at Millers Barn on Sunday June 22nd. It has been a really exciting start to the initiative, and it is hoped it will keep juniors engaged with the sport we all love and make some great friends along the way.

Tour Aces Help Showcase Disabled Golf From left: Paul Wessselingh, Chris Foster, Carl Mason, Richard Saunders, Lewis Eccles and Des Smyth (image courtesy of Phil Ingles and Getty Images).
Ryder Cup vice captain Des Smyth and European Senior Tour No.1 Paul Wesselingh grabbed a glimpse of the progress being made in disabled golf on the eve of the ISPS Handa PGA Seniors Championship at Stoke by Nayland. The duo, plus record senior tour title winner Carl Mason, teed up with a trio of golfers who haven’t let disability dilute their passion for the game, notably one-legged golfer Chris Foster who is determined to qualify as a PGA Professional. Foster lost his leg through bone cancer 15 years ago but in six years playing golf has seen his handicap come tumbling down to 7.6 leaving him with a realistic opportunity of achieving his dream. The 24 year old along with short-armed golfer Richard Saunders from Manningtree and Rotherham’s Lewis Eccles, 13, paired up in a greensomes shootout on Stoke by Nayland’s 175yard par three 18th. And Foster stole the show with a five iron to 25 feet inside the effort of his partner Wesselingh although the one hole challenge was eventually won by the pairing of Mason and Saunders who claimed the honours with a par. “It is amazing what they can do with one leg, Chris hit the most wonderful shot and it shows where there is a will there is a way,” said Smyth who will be one of Paul McGinley’s key men when Europe take on the United States at Gleneagles in September.
“I have played with one armed golfers and other types of disability and that’s why golf is such a great game, it is for everybody, young, old, people with disabilities – that’s what I love about golf.” Saunders, a former Football League linesman and non-league referee, took up golf at 50 and is chairman of the British Amputee Les Autres Sports Association (BALASA). “It’s great what the PGA and ISPS are doing with disability golf, just because you’ve got something missing, doesn’t mean you can’t still aspire to something. With golf clubs losing memberships we need to encourage people back to playing whatever their ability.” ISPS Handa and The PGA are in the third year of an academy programme to give PGA pros the expertise to coach golfers with a range of disabilities and more than 200 have already attended the special week long workshops giving nearly 2000 lessons. Foster, from Bishop’s Stortford, revelled in the experience of partnering defending PGA Seniors champion Wesselingh who later in the week will be hoping to add a third straight win in the European Senior Tour’s oldest event. “It was brilliant fun and it was good from a disabled point of view because it showed we can hit the ball just as well if you put in the hard work,” said Foster.“Experiences like this just reinforce my ambition to become a PGA professional.”

CAN A GOLF CLUB EFFECT HOW YOU
Swing?
Well, the answer is yes and I can prove it! Let’s take a look at a client I saw several days ago. My client was basically unhappy with the distance he hit the ball from the tee and the amount of left to right shape he got on his shots. His driver had not been fitted for him - he had an old Callaway driver playing at 45.5" and 9° loft. As you can see from the screen shot below you will notice how far he swung the club to the left with a swing path of 11.4° left. Further to this you will notice that his face angle is 5° to the right causing the ball to spin right – couple this with a heel strike and you have a big slice with no distance!
From the screen shot below you can see the difference that the correct club made in 6 swings. I fitted the client for a 10.5° loft and a shaft that had a higher balance point than the shaft he used. Length of the shaft was 45" (.5" shorter) and you will notice how his swing geometry has neutralised (become closer to zero, which is great for straight!). His path has changed from 11.4° left to 5.2° left, roughly half as much than with his own driver. His face angle changed from 5.0° to 1.9° right giving a much straighter shot, basically the more right the face the bigger the slice. - 28 -
So, why did this happen? Simple, with his own driver the more the ball sliced right the more he swung left to compensate for it. As soon as the shape of the shot reduced he was hitting the ball straight but a little left of target so his swing path naturally ‘straightened up’ allowing the ball to fly more towards the target. There are also another couple of points of interest: Club speed: Even though the driver was .5" shorter there was no change in club speed. Ball speed: A big jump here from 121.2mph to 124.7mph equalling more distance – basically he struck the ball better. Distance: A jump of 18yds longer with a driver that had more loft and a shorter shaft! Now that goes against a few golfers beliefs!
Hopefully this proves just how important your equipment is if you want to play your best. For more articles my website visit www.leeportergolfsolutions.com or follow me on Twitter @LeePorterGolf.

Hadley Hits Gold As like most avid golfers, Sunday morning for me consists of a friendly roll up between mates at the club. In my case Rochford Hundred Golf Club where I have played for some 30 odd years. This particular day (May 18th) started no differently with the draw for partners and myself being drawn, first we teed off and made our way up number 10. After completing the 10th we moved over to the par 3 11th tee, where I selected a 9 iron and after a couple of waggles sent the ball airborne, it looked good in the air, pitched left of the flag and made its way into the hole! Following this, one of my partners “Wiggy” (Peter Wigg) picked me up like a rag doll and hoisted me high in the air. (I’m still getting over it!) The word spread around the course like wildfire, with congratulations from everyone we met, and a promise of a drink from me later in the clubhouse. Some three days later (May 21st) I entered our weekly stableford competition along with two club mates (Graham Collins and Dick Jones). Again the 10th was our starting point, walking on to the 11th tee there was no thought from me of acing it! Only the memory of three days earlier, I selected an 8 iron and sent the ball towards the green, it was slightly left of the pin, pitched on the bank, ran towards the hole and dropped in! For a few seconds I douted what I’d just seen but Graham brought me back with “its gone in”. That brings my total up to 11 hole in ones all at Rochford Hundred ... must be local knowledge!
The course is set in 240 acres of beautiful parkland in the Essex countryside. The club has hosted the R & A Regional Open Qualifier for the last 5 years.

The Jubilee Cup
Update from Jubilee Cup Committee, sponsored by Seabrook Warehousing, and reported by Chairman Phil Redhead Round Three of the competition has now fully completed, and whatismore a third of Round Four matches are also concluded. By the time you read this, the 8 Finalists who are going through to the playoffs will be known and matches being arranged! The competition continues to see very competitive camaraderie and match-play on Essex courses. May I be one of the first to congratulate the clear victors of Group F, Stock Brook Manor, as moving to the next phase of the competition, with that group completing all their matches by the third week in June – great timing guys too! Things are not necessarily so certain in the other Groups, and some points can be equalled in the final games with the hole-difference becoming crucial for final positions. All Round Four results are due near to the time of Essex Golfer being published this month so please have a look at the Results on our the latest news website for www.jubileecup.com/matches2014/draw3.htm Specifically, the “Road to the Final” will be depicted at www.jubileecup.com/matches2014/qsf_sheet_ 2014.html
As we will ultimately have a majority of team exiting the competition in July, I’d like to thank all the teams for their support and efforts this year. Another fantastic year, which is borne by the number of conversations I have when playing in the competition myself for The Notleys Golf Club – being introduced to my opponent as “Mr Jubilee Cup” has a certain merit, but also applies a fair bit of pressure too! Please keep all your comments coming either directly to me, or via the comments box on the results sheets when you send back to Neil. Check out the website for full details about the Jubilee Cup Competition: www.jubileecup.com including full Competition Rules (such as player qualification details), and the details of the League composition, competition draw, plus match completion dates. The 2014 Rules can be accessed directly from the Internet at www.jubileecup.com/matches2014/rules2014.pdf All the Best, and good luck in your matches! Phil

An exciting month both on and off the course!
U18 Boys Reach National Finals The boys U18 side recorded a momentous victory on Wednesday 28th May winning the England Golf Boys County Championship South East Regional Qualifier at Copthorne Golf Club and booking themselves 1 of only 4 places in the national final, to be held at Sandiway Golf Club 26th – 28th August. The Country’s premier competition in this age bracket, the Boys County Championship encompasses every County in the country competing across 4 regional qualifiers to fill 4 national final spots. For the County side of Captain Mitchell Sarling (Rochford Hundred), Louis Lazarus (Romford),Taylor Carter (Rochford Hundred), Bradley Bawden (Rochford Hundred), Elliot Fullalove (Braintree) and Todd Clements (Braintree) the milestone achievement marks the first time in the last 9 years a County side has made it this far and puts the players amongst a select list of amateur golfers who have competed in this event, many of whom have gone on to become high profile golfing stars of today. Speaking after the event U18’s manager Brian Collins passed on special thanks to his management team Kevin Holland and Michael Thirkettle and was quick to praise Copthorne Golf Club who “hosted the regional event under the most challenging of weather conditions.” Congratulations to the whole team for their efforts both on and off the course that made this achievement possible.
Essex Seniors Championship Thursday 12th and Friday 13th June saw 78 players in total participate in the annual Essex Seniors Championship at Chelmsford Golf Club, all vying to hold The Chelmsford Challenge Trophy come the end of the 2 rounds. The courses fantastic condition allowed low scores throughout and even a hole-in-one by Colin Reynolds (Thorndon Park) but with gross scores of 68 and 71 and a 3 under par, 9 stroke winning margin the emphatic victory went to Tiki Hadjioannau (Maylands). Thanks must go to Chelmsford Golf Club for hosting the event as well as ever and to all competitors that played.

Faldo Wedge There was junior action before May had ended, the annual Faldo Wedge team event held at Crondon Park Golf Club on Friday 30th May. With the challenging Crondon layout presented in great condition a total of 48 teams competed representing 39 County clubs. The host venues junior side were narrowly pipped to the post, just 2 points shy of worthy winners Warley Park, represented by Sophie Wheeler, Joe Defries and Ellisha Cox who will now go on to compete in the England Golf Junior Champion Club Tournament at Woodhall Spa on 9th and 10th August.
Monthly Fixtures & Events Round-Up We start with fixtures from the tail end of May, the first of which saw our County Men’s side play Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire (BB&O) in their second league match of the year at Boyce Hill. A match that swung both ways throughout the morning and afternoon sessions was eventually halved 6 points each, a fair result after some great play from both sides and a good test in advance of the side’s third league match, away to Muswell Hill on 29th June. Early June saw the completion of round 3 matches in both the Thornton Challenge Cup and Leslie F Wood Championship. Both knock-out events now move into the quarter final stages and see the following Clubs drawn against each other: Thornton Challenge Cup West Essex vs Three Rivers Chelmsford vs Rochford Hundred Braintree vs Romford Benton Hall vs Bentley
Leslie F Wood Championship Benton Hall v Orsett Chigwell v Burnham on Crouch Frinton v Upminster West Essex v Ilford
Running alongside the main championships the Thornton Cup and Leslie F Wood Plate knock-outs also move into their quarter final stages, seeing the following Clubs drawn to play against one another: Thornton Cup Plate Wanstead vs Thorndon Park Theydon Bois vs Enfield Harwich & Dovercourt vs Crondon Park Canons Brook vs Upminster

In their triangular league the Essex Colts side played the second of three matches vs Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire on 15th June. This time held at Welwyn Garden City the match saw a return for Alasdair Plumb (Chelmsford) plus debutants Sam Green (Nazeing) and Elliott Oxlade (Chelmsford), all of which culminated in strong wins against both Counties, 8.5 – 3.5 vs Hertfordshire and 8 – 4 vs Bedfordshire. Essex now lead the league by 1 point over. Hertfordshire leaving all to play for in the final fixture at Rochford Hundred on Saturday 6th September.
The County U14 Boys league season culminated in dramatic fashion at Woodford Golf Club on Sunday 1st June. Comprising of Essex, Hampshire and Hertfordshire the third and final match of the triangular league series saw each team entering level on 8 points, with the outcome of the final match to decide the overall league winners. Supremacy switched hands on a number of occasions throughout the afternoon with each side having a chance to come out on top. In the end despite wonderful golf from the County side, William Dove’s 8 foot putt on the last hole in the final match to secure his win a fine example, it wasn’t enough to edge past Hertfordshire who took top spot and go on to play Surrey in the final. End result Hertfordshire 12, Essex 10, Hampshire 8. The second round of the U14 Junior Golf Tour sponsored by the Norman Garon Trust moved onto North Weald Golf Club on 28th May, in total fifty five players aged 10-14 took part, a great sign of the tours continuing success. The second half of the days play was taken over by U12 players for the first of five tournaments to be held at each of the Essex U12 Coaching Centres. Plaudits for the afternoons play go to Luke Thornton (The Warren) and Louis Altham (North Weald) in the Adult Handicap section, Harley Smith (Little Channels Centre) in the Junior Handicap section and William Muldoon in Please turn over the No Handicap section. - 37 -

Mid June saw the return of the Tour as it embarked on its third round at Forrester Park. With many good scores undone by the firm, fast greens and tough rough it was those that used imagination and common sense that came out on top. Another extremely successful event for the tour which saw a boost in participation in the girl’s event, yet another great sign that the tours reach is continuing to grow across the County. The next round takes place at Langdon Hills Golf Club on 31st July. For detailed reports on all winners, order of merit standings and to enter the U14 Junior Golf Tour visit the EGU website.
England Calling for Gilbert Late May into early June has been an exciting period for Chelmsford Golf Club’s Michael Gilbert. After runner up finishes in the second round of the U14 Junior Golf Tour followed by selection for the regional side Gilbert has been hand-picked to represent England at The Junior Open Championship, to be played at The West Lancashire Golf Club 14th – 16th July. Staged every 2 years, the event is closely linked to The Open Championship and can certainly aid as a stepping stone to much greater things with past winners including recent 3 time PGA tour winner Patrick Reed (USA). Congratulations to Michael for all his hard work to date that has allowed him this great achievement.

The PGA in Essex
Secretary: Colin Reynolds pgainessex@yahoo.co.uk
Tel: 0771 3926 108 www.pga.info
Avid readers of Essex Golfer will have noticed some changes to the top of this report, we have recently signed a trademark agreement with The Professional Golfers’ Association and we are now known as The PGA in Essex. The PGA operates as the governing body for professional golfers in Great Britain and Ireland and has been in existence since 1901. Although there will be a few minor changes to the way we operate, in essence we will carry on as before under a new and more powerful banner. At this point I must pay tribute to the fantastic work done by Suzy Garland Collins who has been secretary for over 10 years. She has worked tirelessly to help professional golfers in Essex and to promote our events. We all owe Suzy a great debt of gratitude and wish her well in the future. At the recent Essex Open at Toot Hill Suzy was presented with a custom fitted set of Mizuno irons and we all hope that she will spend many hours using them and enjoying her game. We are in our close season at the moment but many of our members are playing on the East Region circuit and some are enjoying great success. Most recently the East Region Championship was won by Mark Hooper from the Rayleigh Club, this was played at Essendon Country Club over two rounds and it resulted in a playoff with four players finishing in four under par. Two
of the players were from Essex, Mark Hooper and also Mark Baker from Colchester Golf Club. The play-off was eventually won by Mark Hooper who is having a great run of form having recently played in the flagship event on the European Tour at Wentworth, the PGA Championships where he finished tied 29th. In the final round he was drawn with Justin Rose, last year's US Open Champion, a great experience.
Forthcoming Events Although this is our close season, we hold an annual Junior Pro-Am which is open to all junior golfers who have a club handicap. The format is two juniors and a Professional and is a tremendous experience for the juniors. The event is being held at Colne Valley on Sunday July 13th and we look forward to seeing as many juniors as possible. Full details are available with your club Professional or by contacting the PGA in Essex. Finally for this month, places are still available for our Belgium Pro-Am which will take place from October 14th to 16th The format is three amateurs with a professional and the event will again be played at Royal Zoute, Royal Ostende and Damme Coutry Club. Full details are available from the PGA in Essex. Enjoy your game
ESSEX GOLF PROFESSIONALS REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR SUPPORT. PLEASE CONTINUE TO PARTICIPATE IN OUR EVENTS AND ENCOURAGE YOUR FRIENDS TO JOIN US FOR A GREAT DAY OUT. - 42 -

SHORT GAME VERSUS
LONG GAME Over the past 6 months there has been much discussion on which area of the game has the greatest importance? Short or long. Every Shot Counts – a new book by Mark Brodie looks into the statistics from the US PGA Tour of shots gained, providing evidence to back the long game as the most important. Although I agree with some of what Brodie says, I feel the short game is an area which every golfer is able to improve and save shots. Strength, power and flexibility are far less relevant in the short game allowing every golfer the
opportunity the lower their scores. Ultimately, to improve each player should know their personal strengths and weaknesses in order to practise efficiently, whether it’s the long or short game. This is where coaching can make all the difference. Practise, learn and improve your short game and start lowering your scores.

GOLF IS A
BALANCING ACT How often have you thought about how your body impacts your golf swing and the specific movements you are asking and requiring it to carry out? Fitness has become a huge area within the industry as its relevance was little well respected until the 1990s until both Tiger Woods and Annika Sorenstam announced their programmes included a greater proportion of fitness in relation to technical input I am naturally talking about two of the world time greats who have spent their entire life dedicated to the game and countless hours. I know that as a former Ladies European Tour member the recreational golfer just wants longevity for their golf and to play pain free which is a goal for most players. This month I will focus upon one important aspect which deteriorates rapidly with age which is the “B” word BALANCE… It is an underestimated area of the game as we are taught generally on flat lies at the range or club practice ground. During the golf swing we require
a high degree of proprioception and stability to ensure we give ourselves the best chance of success for the particular shot in hand. I appreciate and respect the vestibular system having coped with an injury requiring myself to undergo a series of recalibration exercises which took a number of years. I now bring aspects of these into my generic coaching and disguise these as part of drills and warm up routines I would like to break down the golf swing into four segments which I will give you a drill to assist with your balance. • Set up • Backswing • Impact • Follow Through Just for a moment consider the movement patterns and degree of balance required during the chain when we are swinging a club in the region of 60mph-100mph! How many times have you finished a swing off balance?? Don’t worry we all have!!!
- 48 -
Fig 1: A well balanced finish.
Fig 2:“Balance drill
Set up: This is the start point of the golf swing where we must be in a strong and stable position. Try closing your eyes gently feeling where the central point in your stance is. The weight should be evenly distributed on the balls of the feet. Please ensure someone is close by to steady you should it be required. Follow through: We have all looked out of our clubhouse windows at the players teeing off from the first tee, how many golfers are able to hold their follow through for 2-3 seconds? Hopefully after this article the number will increase which is definitely something that you can concentrate upon during your practice sessions and practice swing as figure 1 shows. Putting & chipping: How about really testing yourself? Play some chip shots firstly on the left leg then the right (Fig 2) this drill will help to regulate and maintain our balance. How often find ourselves on the edge of bunkers or inclines around the apron of the green so it is critical to have stability to play these shots effectively. This is a great drill for putting too my juniors love testing themselves with plenty of laughs.
I am proud to be associated with the TPI network and as a certified TPI Fitness Instructor have an appreciation of the various limitations that can impact our swing. Lee Westwood opens his Golf School at Stoke by Nayland Arriving hot foot straight from the BMW Championship at Wentworth, former World No 1 golfer, and Ryder Cup team player, Lee Westwood paid a quick visit to Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa on Bank Holiday Monday, where he officially opened the Lee Westwood Golf School at the venue’s Driving Range – before flying back to Florida later the same day. Lee was greeted on the 18th tee by managers of the LWGS, and by the family owners of the Hotel. He then took a great iron shot off the renowned
18th tee of the Stoke by Nayland Gainsborough Course across the lake, along with Golf School students Simon La Font, Joseph Fryer and James Lanigan, and even after a 2 hour journey and no warm up he landed just a couple of feet from the par 3 hole in front of the hotel, caught on camera by BBC, ITV, Sky Sports and European Tour film crews who were all keen to capture the moment. After that he competed against some of the students on a Trackman practise system at the Driving Range in front of a crowd of impressed students and their parents, before cutting the ribbon to officially open the School, signing the official plaque, and taking a tour of the newly completed premises. Lee said, “I would like to thank everyone for the warm welcome I have received at Stoke by

Nayland today. I am delighted at the facilities we can offer the students at the Lee Westwood Golf School and impressed by the professionalism and dedication of our team. The Golf School at Stoke by Nayland is exactly the type of facility I had envisioned when I set out to enhance students ability to improve their golf and academic learning simultaneously. Thanks and well done to everyone involved.” The family owned Stoke by Nayland Hotel and Golf complex is home to one of just two Lee Westwood Golf Schools in the country - the first having opened in Cheshire in September 2010 and this branch then opened a year later in September 2011. Around 40 students from all over the world aged from 16 to 19 are currently enjoying the 2 year full time course at the school and benefit from state-of-the-art facilities at the brand new £400,000 purpose built centre at the hotel’s 30 bay driving range. These include a Golf and Education complex with a custom indoor putting green, two classrooms, indoor ball simulation

room and Trackman computerized practice system. Two full time Golf Professionals, a Fitness Instructor and Nutritionist are all employed at the school and these facilities allow it to provide the very best golf and education program available in the UK. The students are mostly accommodated at the hotel, and make use of the two championship golf courses at the venue. They have come from countries such as Singapore, USA, Mauritius, Guatamala, Russia and all over Europe and the UK. Lee is a strong and passionate role model for the school and continues to provide support and input to the students – just last month at Wentworth he took time out of his practice round to coach and guide them in a lengthy bunker session. The students aspire to his acute level of professionalism as well as learn from his style of play with the vigour and determination that Lee maintains at all times. Nike Golf Unveils NG360 App Updates
Nike Golf’s newest NG360 app update makes it easier than ever for golfers to share and compete with friends and other golfers around the world.
adidas Golf Introduces Innovative climachill Apparel Collection adidas Golf, an industry leader in innovation, technology and performance footwear and apparel, has announced the release of the new climachill apparel collection, featuring new and exclusive fabric technologies designed to keep golfers cool when temperatures rise on the course. Designed and developed to raise performance levels by helping regulate body temperatures, adidas Golf engineers have revolutionized golf apparel technology with proprietary climachill fabric, engineering the most breathable material the company has ever incorporated into its apparel lines. Delivering a cooling sensation upon contact with the skin, small aluminum dots are strategically located inside the back neck, one of the warmest areas on the human body. The climachill fabric construction utilises woven titanium fibres that maximise surface contact with skin. Remarkably light, climachill fabric acts like an open mesh to increase air permeability, drawing heat away from the body and allowing for unmatched ventilation and evaporation of sweat to keep golfers cool like never before. Visit www.adidasgolf.com to learn more about climachill technology and to view the entire collection.
The NG360 app inspires, motivates and enables golfers to improve their game through a variety of digital tools available on any iOS mobile device. The app provides score and stat tracking, Nike+ friend leaderboards, swing analysis and gear recommendations, and with the latest updates, users can now share customised photos; analyse slow motion swing videos from Nike Athletes Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy; and see how they stack up against friends and Nike Golf Athletes with new Levels and Comparisons tools. Customised Photo Sharing Golfers can capture their round with a photo, upload the image from an iOS device, tag location and friends, and customise with an overlay that includes stats, scores, personal bests and “trophies.” Learn From the Best NG360 now enables golfers to break down Tiger and Rory’s swings with frame-by-frame slowmotion analysis. Levels and Comparisons Two additional features with the NG360 update, Levels and Comparisons, allow users to measure their performance in a variety of categories against other golfers and Nike Athletes. With the Levels tool, users can see how they stack up across scoring average, greens in regulation and putts per round to help pinpoint areas for improvement in their game. The NG360 updates for iOS devices are available in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Sweden, Ireland and Germany. The app is available for free on the App Store on iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch or at www.iTunes.com/appstore

Vault 002 – the New Range from RIFE Rife Putters has announced the release of its latest range of performance driven putters – Vault 002. The new range for 2014 combines performance driven design, Rife’s patented Roll Groove technology and a pristine PVD black finish, producing a range of putters that roll beautifully on the green and look beautiful to the eye. Roll Groove technology uses precisely spaced milled grooves that allow the putter to gently press into the cover of the ball, gripping and lifting it into an instant forward roll. Every putter in the Rife range incorporates Roll Groove face technology along with a reduced loft face that ensures the ball is gripped, not chipped. With the introduction of three new models for the start of summer there is a Rife design to suit every golfer’s eye and with the benefit of a quick true roll on the green Rife Putters will suit every golfer’s game.
Sundog filters the blue light handicap for golfers Sundog Eyewear, the innovative high-tech sunglasses brand, has introduced a new range of stylish TrueBlue® glasses for golfers that not only block Ultraviolet rays, but filter harmful blue light for the ultimate in eye protection and greater accuracy out on the course.
New Superstroke Grip SuperStroke, the fastest-growing putter grip on Tour with more than $100 million won in prize money, has helped deliver more success after responding to demand from some of the world’s top golfers for a new mid-sized grip. The latest size in the SuperStroke line-up, the Mid Slim 2.0, originated from Tour players requesting a grip size between the standardsized Ultra Slim 1.0 and the Tour-favourite Slim 3.0. With a diameter of 1.20”, the 50gMid Slim grip has proved an instant hit, helping a Senior golfer take his first-ever Major Championship and increasing the total number of players on Tour using SuperStroke patented technology to 125. “Every grip in the SuperStroke range features parallel technology that evens pressure in both hands and eliminates tension in the wrist to help produce a smooth, pendulum-like putting stroke,” added Fletcher. “The beauty of the Mid Slim 2.0 is that it suits a lot of golfers who’re looking for that size between the existing Ultra Slim 1.0 and Slim 3.0 grip diameters.” As with the nine other SuperStroke grips available across Europe, the Mid Slim 2.0 model features a lightweight foam underneath a high-tech PU material with Cross Traction technology for improved feel and grip. www.brandfusionltd.co.uk

FEELING As you may know by now, I’m always standing on my soap box about the fundamental necessity to hydrate, not least for optimal golfing performance. For some, reaching for the Evian may not be enough. Studies show that under conditions of excessive heat and especially perspiration, replenishing products such as ORS and SIS
(Science in sport) can prove beneficial. Try each and see what suits you best, especially away from the competitive environment. Getting sufficient fluids can prove taxing. Therefore, make your diet more ‘wet’ too! Use the following guide to boost fluids ...

Rayleigh Club Pro Nails Huge Putt For Play-off Glory Mark Hooper claimed a dramatic play-off triumph at the PGA East Region Championship at Essendon Country Club by draining a 35-birdie putt. The Rayleigh Club professional finished regulation play at four-under-par alongside Ian Ellis, Mark Baker and Darren Charlton. At the first hole in extra time, it appeared to be an advantage, Ellis as he sent a superb approach into 10 feet. But Hooper, 30, rolled home an amazing right-toleft breaker from a long range for a three at the 448-yard par-4. Charlton was unable to hole from a similar distance, and neither could Baker from just through the back of the green. That left Ellis as the only man who could match Hooper’s birdie. But his putt stayed above ground to leave last year’s overall Order of Merit winner savouring a fresh success. Hooper said: “It was probably the best putt I’ve ever holed, under the circumstances. It has to be, really – to hole one that long in a play-off. “It was 35 feet, straight down the hill, and it was so fast. There was about two feet of break in it, right to left. From probably 10 feet out, I was just hoping it was going to stay on-line and, it did.” The victory was the latest feather in Hooper’s cap after last month finishing tied 38th at Wentworth in the BMW PGA Championship, the European Tour’s flagship event. At Essendon, he followed an opening 69 with a 71 that concluded with a bogey at the final hole. Colchester’s Baker, playing in the final group, needed a par at the last to clinch the title. But he found sand with an iron approach and was unable to get up and down. Hooper and Baker were joined in the play-off by Ellis (Great Yarmouth and Caister) and Charlton, who fired the best two rounds of the tournament. Ellis shot a sizzling second-round 66, while Dunstable Downs’ Charlton signed for a fine 67. But the last word went to Hooper, whose

monster putt sealed the deal. It was a fitting end to a gripping championship played out at a superb venue. Essendon was staging a PGA in England (East) Order of Merit tournament for the second successive year, and the club’s owner Kieran Griffin felt the two days were a great success, capped by that thrilling finale. He said: “The play-off was brilliant and it was a really exciting finish to what has been a really good event. We are delighted. “We are trying to get the word out about Essendon and one of the best things for us to do is to bring professionals here from other clubs to see what we’ve got to offer. The coverage it has generated has really helped to put us on the map in terms of Hertfordshire golf.” PGA East Region Championship at Essendon CC (PGA in England East order of merit) leading scores: 140: M Hooper (The Rayleigh Club) 69 71 (won at first play-off hole), I Ellis (Great Yarmouth and Caister) 74 66, D Charlton (Dunstable Downs 73, 67), M Baker (Colchester) 68 72. 141: J Levermore (Channels) 69 72. 142: C Baron (West Essex) 68 74. 143: J Mynott (St Ives) 69 74. 145: P Latimer (Felixstowe Ferry) 75 70, S Brown (Orton Meadows) 73 72, G Howard (Brampton Park) 69 76, M Davis (Thorndon Park) 68 77.

Silver Ladies
Keep It Up Sam
The ladies’ Silver Trophy team had a close match against near neighbours Colne Valley. Colchester winning by three matches to two. Both Colchester’s lead players Liz Lennox and Judith Robertson lost out to Wendy Cook and Sue Drysdale one down and 3&1 down respectively, and it was the last three players who put in the wins. Bee Pertwee beat Cynthia Hollinsworth 4&3 whilst Gill Minns had a 5&4 win over Kaien Charles. The final match was Sheena Nunny, who had a 3&1 victory over Diane Wyatt.
Windfall For Gill Gill Minns was the winner of the lady's Windfall Stableford at Colchester Golf Club. Putting together a round of 34 points she was one point ahead of a chasing pack of five other competitors that all returned with 33 points. Minns’s handicap of sixteen remained untouched as the competition scratch of the day was 73. Her strength on the day was the secret of most good rounds, playing the par threes well. She was just two over par on the four par threes, the dropped shots were courtesy of long 13th which she double bogeyed. This coupled with doubles on the 5th, and the 17th were the only real blemishes on an excellent card. On 33 points from the Silver Division were Elaine Gilbert (18) and Marilyn Wood (16) along with another 16 handicapper Madryn Abnett. Also on the same score from Bronze A was Val Doubleday (24) and Bronze B were not to be left out with Doreen Friedlander chipping in with another 33 to make up the five runners up.
