TEE OFF
Playing at a local course last month, I watched a fellow golfer duff his approach shot to the green. A stream of expletives exploded from his mouth, and then he took a baseball swing at a poor unsuspecting nearby tree. He snapped the club, but within seconds was laughing with his mates and carried on with his round. Those few seconds of anger were amazing and, scarily I found a horrific previous example. In 1994, 16-year old Jeremy Brenno of Gloversville, New York, was killed when he struck a bench with a golf club; the shaft broke, bounced back at him, and pierced his heart. Brenno had missed a shot on the sixth hole at the Kingsboro Golf Club and looked to vent his frustration by trying to knock six bells out of the nearby bench. The fatal club was a 3 Wood. I often find myself getting close to the edge, when I thin my chip shot 30 yards thru the green. However, I think it’s time for me to take a deep breath and let it go. For those old enough to remember the words of the Sergeant in Hill Street Blues ‘Let’s be careful out there.’ Glen Head

Well we are now well and truly into the season and still a mixed bag of weather. With the US Open Championships just taken place we have now completed two of the 4 majors. We have seen plenty of action in terms of woods and irons sales and for a very short time we have a fantastic offer on Pings previous line of woods and irons, the G20. Prices are excellent but there is limited availability so you will need to speak to us early. This month offer is a real tempter!! If you need your golf wardrobe spruced up then take advantage of our 3 for 2 offer. With strong brands such as Nike, Callaway, Ping, Daily Sports, Oscar Jacobson, Green Lamb, Dwyer's, Stromberg and Footjoy there is a massive choice and plenty of sizes. Again this is just for 4 days only so don’t delay in getting what you want. Phil

Simon Khan bounces back Simon Khan bounced back from his dramatic play off defeat by Matteo Manassero at Wentworth in the BMW PGA Championship. He secured a place at the US Open at Merion near Philadelphia by winning the open qualifier at Walton Heath. The 40 year old followed an opening round of 67 on the Old Course with a 70 on the New Course for a seven under par total of 137, finishing one stroke clear of Englishman Paul Casey and South African Jaco Van Zyl. After birdieing the first two holes, Khan bogeyed the fifth before picking up another shot on the eighth. He then made back-to-back bogeys immediately after the turn, before hitting back with a superb run of three consecutive birdies on the 12th, 13th and 14th holes. Although he dropped a shot on the 16th, Khan had enough left in the tank to par the closing two holes and secure his third appearance in the US Open after previously playing in 2009 and 2010. “It will be my third US Open and I love the tournament, so it will be fantastic to go back.” Said Khan. www.europeantour.com

‘Anchored Strokes’ Prohibited from 1 January 2016 Governing Bodies Issue Report Explaining Their Decision Following Comment Process At concurrent press conferences at Wentworth in Surrey and Far Hills in New Jersey the R&A and the United States Golf Association (USGA), golf’s governing bodies, have announced the adoption of Rule 14-1b of the Rules of Golf that prohibits anchoring the club in making a stroke. The new Rule will take effect on 1 January 2016 in accordance with the regular four-year cycle for changes to the Rules of Golf. Rule 14-1b, which was proposed on 28 November 2012, has now been given final approval by The R&A and the USGA following an extensive review by both organisations. The decision to adopt the new Rule came after a comprehensive process in which comments and suggestions from across the golf community were collected and thoroughly considered. The R&A and the USGA have prepared a 30 page detailed report to explain the reasons for the decision to adopt Rule 14-1b. The report explains the principles on which the Rules of Golf are founded, why freely swinging the entire club is the essence of the traditional method of stroke, and why anchoring is a substantially different form of stroke that may alter and diminish the fundamental challenges of the game. It points out that the Rule will still allow the use of belly-length and long putters and that a wide variety of types of strokes remain for players to use. The report concludes that the new Rule should not adversely affect participation in the game, that it is not too late or unfair to require players to comply with it and that it will remove concerns about any potential advantage that anchoring provides. It also makes clear that one set of Rules is essential to the future health of the game. The report, entitled Explanation of Decision to Adopt Rule 14-1b of the Rules of Golf, can be found at www.RandA.org/anchoring or at www.usga.org/anchoring. Peter Dawson, Chief Executive of The R&A said: “We took a great deal of time to consider this issue and received a variety of contributions from individuals and organisations at all levels of the game. The report published today gives a comprehensive account of the reasons for taking the decision to adopt the new Rule and addresses the concerns that have been raised. We recognise this has been a divisive issue but after thorough consideration we remain convinced that this is the right decision for golf.” Report by golfbusinessnews.com

The club face When talking about the club face through the swing, there are a few points worth noting. What shape do you want to hit the ball on, how you place your hands on the club and how we refer to neutral. Firstly shot pattern; you can either choose left to right for a fade or right Picture 1. to left for a draw. The club face conditions for both shot types are very different. The fade swing requires a club face that tends to enter the ball slightly strong and when the ball leaves it is 14

held off, ie not allowing the toe to pass the heel. Pictures 1 and 2 demonstrate this. The draw swing, on the other hand, requires the club face to enter the ball more open and during impact, the toe of the club is allowed to pass the heel, pictures 3 and 4 illustrate this. Now how you Picture 3. place your hands on the club will determine which club face you create, picture 5 shows a strong grip 3/4 knuckles showing on the back of the left hand; this configuration will create a strong club face more akin to fading the Picture 4.

ball, alternatively picture 6 shows a weaker two knuckle left hand grip; this will open the club face up more conducive to a draw swing. However you choose to place your hands on the club ideally the dish angle (the concave shape of the back of the left wrist) at the top of the back swing must be preserved. Picture 7 strong club face, picture 8 weak club face but notice in both pictures the left wrist is the same.

Paul McGinley and Quinta Do Lago to Host UK’s Top Juniors The UK’s top young golfers will head to Quinta do Lago in Portugal later this year to compete in the final of the world’s largest junior golf event – and the chance to meet 2014 European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley. McGinley will take time out from his preparations for next year’s Ryder Cup at Gleneagles to greet the 21 finalists who will gather at the resort for the climax to the Telegraph BMW Junior Golf Championship from 9-11 October. Quinta do Lago’s iconic South Course, which has staged the Portuguese Open eight times, will host the 54-strokeplay competition as budding stars of the future compete for the chance to succeed 2012 champions Matthew Fitzpatrick and Emily Taylor. Previous finalists have included the likes of Justin Rose, Tom Lewis, Melissa Reid and Rebecca Hudson and more than 40,000 youngsters will take part in the competition to vie for final places – 12 for boys and nine for girls. McGinley said: “I’m delighted to be supporting the 2013 Telegraph BMW Junior Golf Championship. For more than 25 years, the championship has given junior golfers throughout the UK and Republic of Ireland the chance to be part of the biggest junior golf competition in the world. SkyCaddie launches golf ’s most powerful Swing Analyser and Training Tool SkyGolf®, maker of SkyCaddie®, the most trusted Rangefinder in Golf, today introduced SkyPro® (SRP £169.95), golf’s most powerful portable swing analyser and training tool. With SkyPro, golfers can learn incredible amounts of detail about every swing they make, whether on the golf course or in any bay at the driving range. It enables the golfer to see and store information on how they typically swing every club in the bag, enabling them to store ‘good’ swings to use as a template for future practice. The powerful SkyPro, which weighs less than 30g, is about the size of a USB stick and attaches easily to the shaft of any golf club just below the grip. It is virtually undetectable during the golf swing. Open the free SkyPro app on your smart phone, and balance the phone on your clubface to ‘pair’ the club with SkyPro. Then remove the phone, and simply swing the golf club. You don’t even need to switch SkyPro on. Hank Haney, world-renowned golf instructor, says: “SkyPro will change the way teachers help golfers to improve. Repeating bad swings only grooves a bad swing, but with SkyPro golfers can see flaws instantly, and discuss them with their golf coach. With SkyPro golfers will no longer groove their faults when their instructor is not around. It’s like having a personal swing coach everywhere you go, so your time on the range is spent building good habits and a repeatable golf swing – just the way your coach wants you to swing.” www.skycaddie.co.uk.

Women’s international golf event to be staged for first time in UK at Stoke by Nayland The Professional Golfers’ Association is increasing its support of the women’s game with the launch of a new tournament on the Ladies European Tour Access Series (LETAS). This exciting development in women’s golf will see The WPGA International Challenge supported by Stoke by Nayland Hotel Golf & Spa added to the LETAS schedule and played at the venue on September 26-28. The 54-hole tournament, which is the only event on the LETAS schedule to be played in the United Kingdom, will feature an international field of 120 players competing for a share of the €25,000 prize fund. There will be an opportunity for 20 WPGA members to compete in the event. In addition, with the support of England Golf, 20 elite female amateurs will also compete in the event. The new tournament, which will provide additional playing opportunities for elite WPGA members and leading English female amateurs, has been widely welcomed by all involved in bringing the event to fruition.

The opportunity for England’s leading women amateurs to get valuable experience has been praised by Nigel Edwards, performance director at England Golf. The Importance of teeing the ball correctly A skied drive is a hugely frustrating shot and one that can be avoided, here’s my check list to correct it. Tee Height: Make sure ½ the ball sits proud of the club head at address. The driver should strike the ball after it has travelled past the lowest point in the arc and is starting to swing slightly up again to the follow through. Ball Position: When using a driver, you should generally play the ball off the inside of the front foot (left for right-handed golfers). This encourages you to strike the ball on the upstroke and in the centre of the clubface (the sweet spot). Swing Arc: If a golfer swings the club straight up and down the target line, generally with little shoulder turn; the driver will travel abruptly down on the ball (steeply) which forces the ball straight up in the air. To help cure this, focus on bringing the club head back low and slow, place a coin 30cm behind the ball but on the line to target, swing the club head over the coin in the first stages of the takeaway. Reverse Pivot: With a reverse pivot, a golfer has their weight on their front foot during the backswing. (picture one) and their back foot during the followthrough (picture two) --the exact opposite of a correct swing. To fix the problem, make sure your back foot has 95% of your weight on it at the top of your backswing, now when you swing through take a step toward the target after impact. This will emphasize moving weight forward during the swing. For further explanations on how to cure your sliced drive, please visit www.gemsgolf.co.uk 1

The 93rd Essex PGA Open Championship took place at Chelmsford Golf Club on Thursday May 16th. A field of over 70 competitors played on a beautifully prepared golf course. Conditions were tough though with the morning round not seeing any scores under par. There was a four way tie at lunchtime with Lloyd Kennedy, John Judd, Brett Taylor and Jason Levermore all on 69. Despite continuing difficult playing conditions, Lloyd Kennedy posted a second round 69 which was good enough to take the title by one shot from Chase Davis, who had an impressive afternoon round of 65. In joint third were Jason Levermore and Mark Hooper on 140 and in 5th place was Simon Khan on 141. Both Simon and Jason were off to Wentworth the following week to play in the BMW PGA Championship. Mention must be made to the best amateur score from Chelmsford's Elliott Oxlade whose 71 and 74 put him in overall 14th position. Sixteen year old Elliott is also Chelmsford's Junior Captain.
Lloyd Kennedy with David Nairn from Burts Potato Chips Our largest Pro/Am of the year was held the following day with 40 teams participating. Lloyd Kennedy and Steve Hambling from Braintree were sitting pretty with 67's when Chase Davis from Stapleford Abbots played the Par 3 18th and holed his tee shot in front of a packed club house! It was a very lucrative shot for Chase and enough to take the Pro Individual Competition by one shot from Lloyd and Steve. In the team competition, Chase Davis and his team of Peter Cumberworth, Keith Dicker and Michael Theobald won with 83 points on countback 26
from Chris Cutchie with Phil Harding, Peter Holt and Ian Simpson and Mark Talbott with Matt Wall, Carl Neal and David Yang. It was a brilliant couple of days and sincere thanks to all of those professionals and amateurs who participated, the many corporate sponsors who supported us (including Bird Luckin Chartered Accountants, Empire Food Brokers, Greene King, ESL., Philip Grahame, DSV, The Stone Company and Waterhouse Cars together with our fabulous main sponsor Burts Potato Chips - which are absolutely delicious, and you really must try them!
Elliott Oxlade -Best Amateur
Chase Davis - Just after his Hole in So, last week One on the 18th and Winner Jason Levermore, of the Pro/Am Simon Khan and Robbie Coles played in the BMW PGA championship at Wentworth. We all know what happened on the last day but what a superb tournament for Simon. Jason and Robbie made the cut too and how great to see these Essex based Professionals competing at such a high level.

Bloodhound Driver Will Attempt World Record How far could an 'unrestricted' driver hit a golf ball? Surprisingly, the answer may be discovered by a new British team formed by Zen Golf to create the world’s most technologically-advanced golf driver, in an attempt to break the longstanding world carry record of 408 yards 10 inches; currently held by British golfer Karl Woodward. Richard Noble OBE, who himself set a new Land Speed Record of 634mph in 1983, and whose team created Thrust SSC which, in 1997, broke the sound barrier when Andy Green set a new record of 760mph, is the inspiration and driving force behind the new car, Bloodhound SSC (www.bloodhoundssc.com). With a record attempt predicted in 2015 on the Hakskeen Pan in South Africa, Noble has this to say about the recordbreaking golf driver project: “The technical challenges facing Bloodhound SSC as we attempt to break the 1000mph barrier will undoubtedly lead to a quantum leap forward for British engineering. I’m really excited see how these emerging technologies can be harnessed to break barriers in Golf Sports engineering”. More can be seen on the project’s site at www.zenoracle.com/bloodhounddriver.

MEDALS ALL ROUND. The Threadgill Trophy was first presented by Orsett Golf Club in 1987. It is an open 36 hole scratch strokeplay tournament. It is one of five Club competitions in which players can earn points counting towards the County Order of Merit. This year it was played on 3rd May and won by Mark Stones of Boyce Hill Golf Club. The Chigwell Bowl was first presented by Chigwell Golf Club in 1959. In the year 2000, Chigwell very kindly agreed to host the County Colts Championship and combine it with the Chigwell Bowl. Each tournament is 36 holes scratch strokeplay. The Chigwell Bowl is competed for by players who are under 25 years of age with a handicap of 8 or less. Players who are under 21 with a handicap of 6 or less are eligible for the Colts Championship. A player who wins the Colts Championship can also win the Chigwell bowl. From the time we first arrived at Chigwell Golf Club on 24th May it was raining. It rained throughout the day, sometimes heavily. It was also chilly as attested by our starters and on course referees. Despite these unfavourable conditions 71 young men played and most returned respectable scores. This year the Chigwell Bowl was won by Ben Horton of Thorndon Park Bobby Keeble of Crowlands Heath is the new Colts Champion. When presenting the prizes our County President John Peters thanked Chigwell golf Club for their hospitality and commended the players for their fortitude in completing 36 holes in almost continuous heavy rain. A full report follows later THE UNDER 14 JUNIOR GOLF TOUR. The second of the six Tour events was held at Forrester Park on 5th May. It is pleasing that the number of young players participating continues to rise. That said, we would like to see more girls taking part. We hope that Lady Captains and Junior Organisers reading this column will take this to heart and inspire more young girls to join. Congratulations to Aaron Edwards-Hill who won the Under 14 Scratch, Jackson Garnett who won the Under 13 Scratch and to Lily May Humphries who won the Girls scratch and handicap events. Congratulations too to Alfie Buttle and Lewis Cookson who won the Under 14 and Under 13 handicap events. A full report from our County Junior Organiser, Keith Mitchell follows.

TEAM TALK. Over the past few weeks, most of our teams have been in action. Our Colts beat Middlesex in a South East League Match by the margin of 9 matches to 3. Sad to say our other teams did not fare so well despite excellent performances by some of our players. Full match reports follow. LOOKING AHEAD. • The County Amateur Championship is our main event in June. This 72 hole scratch strokeplay tournament will be played at The Essex Golf Club, Earls Colne, on 8th and 9th June. Our reigning champion, Bobby Keeble, will be defending his title. Being the County Amateur Champion is a marvellous thing for anyone to have on his golfing CV and a stepping stone to England selection. The Jubilee Trophy is played in conjunction with the Amateur Championship and is awarded to the leading player who is under 21 years of age. • The Essex Seniors Championship and the Chelmsford Challenge Trophy will be played at Chelmsford (where else) on 13th and 14th of June. • The County Mixed Championship will be held at Colne Valley Golf Club on Saturday 22nd June. The entry fee is £60 per couple and includes a Buffet on arrival, Cream Tea and Prizes. There is a £5 discount per person for Inter-County Card members. The closing date for entries is Friday 7th June. To enter, please contact the County Office. Our thanks to Colne Valley Golf Club, not only for hosting the event but for suggesting the idea. • Canons Brook 50th Anniversary. As part of their anniversary celebrations Canons brook Golf Club have very kindly invited the Essex Golf Union to play a friendly match and dine with their Board and Past Captains on Wednesday 26th June. When called upon, Canons Brook always go out of their way to support the County, something that we greatly appreciate. We congratulate Canons Brook on reaching this milestone and we very much look forward to helping them to celebrate. CHIGWELL BOWL and COLTS CHAMPIONSHIP 24th May 2013 The Chigwell Bowl was won by Ben Horton of Thorndon Park who returned a gross score of 145. Bobby Keeble of Crowlands Heath was runner up returning a gross 146 while Billy Deville of The Bentley returned a gross 147 to claim third place. The Colts Championship was won by Bobby Keeble. Mitchel Sarling of Rochford Hundred was third. Handicap prizes are also awarded for the Chigwell Bowl. Taylor Carter was the winner with Billy Deville the runner up. Jason Horne of Orsett scored a hole in one at the 191 yard 14th, no doubt bringing a smile to his face as well as to the faces of his playing companions.

ESSEX JUNIOR U14 GOLF TOUR Forrester Park – Sunday May 5th 2013 This was our second tour event of the year and the weather decided to treat us kindly. Forrester Park presented a course that rewarded well placed tee shots and tested even the best approach players with some hard and fast greens. The Tour is in its second year and gaining in popularity. There are over 90 young players signed up for the events and Forrester Park saw the largest field so far with 55 players on the course. The girl’s section had four taking part, but the quality was high with Lily May Humphreys (17 Handicap) showing the boys how to put together a winning score. Lewis Cookson (24) also displayed considerable determination and together they took first place on the day in the Handicap section by scoring 40 Stableford Points. Runners up in the Handicap section were Alfie Buttle (12) and Joe Defries (17) with 39 points. Both players are displaying considerable determination to improve this year and their handicaps are falling fast. The tour will catch up with them soon! The Scratch section saw Aaron Edwards- Hill in first place with a great score of 29 points, with runners up Alfie Buttle and Jackson Garnett with 27 points. Close behind were Alex English and Ben Rendell on 26 points. There are prizes for each age group as follows: Under 14 Handicap – 1st Alfie Buttle (39), 2nd Aaron Edwards-Hill (37), Joe Green (37). The competition also gives boys who have not been selected for County squads to make their mark and it is most encouraging to see the likes of Joe Defries, James Styles and Joe Green performing better than many of the county squad. Essex Colts began their league matches at Pinner Hill GC against Middlesex on a sunny Bank holiday weekend. The first highlight was a hole in one by James Allan during the practice round. His eighth, but in his own words “his first Slam Dunk” The morning foursomes got off to a steady start with the first three matches being very James Allan close at the half way point. The first two matches finished all square. The two new Colts Jonathan Hewett and Tom Watkins, in the third match, edged their way forward to a two and one win. Old hands Jordan Wallace and George Evans, had a convincing six and four win to give us a three – one lead at lunch. The afternoon singles went well, with two early wins by James Allan and the Captain Jordan Wallace. This was followed by wins from Jordan Slater, Tom Watkins and Ben David. Two halved matches gave a six – two win in the singles. In team match play it is the luck of the draw as to who plays who so well done to all the team. Sarling and a fine performance from Scott Brace, a half from captain Alex Woodward meant that the scores were tied at the end of the match ENGLAND GOLF - SOUTH EASTERN GROUP SENIORS TEAM QUALIFIER Played at Sheringham Golf Club on Tuesday 13th and Wednesady 14th May 2013
After lunch thing took a severe turn for the worst, both in the weather and in the Essex teams fortunes, during an afternoon of constant rain the County side saw their hopes washed away when they lost the first five singles of the day. The only ray of sunshine was a tremendous 5&4 win by Scott Brace and a superb performance by young debutant Tom Baker who halved with the very experienced Malcolm Reid.

SOUTH EASTERN GROUP NORTH – SENIOR MATCH MIDDLESEX v ESSEX At EALING GOLF CLUB – 29th April 2013 Middlesex 6½ - Essex 3½
On a fine spring day at Ealing Golf Club Essex Seniors faced Middlesex for their first match of the year. The weather and course were fine and in particular the greens were in excellent condition but the over 55’s from Essex made heavy weather of the opposition. At the half way mark it appeared that the match would be much closer with only a hole in it either way but as the round wore on it became apparent that Essex were in for a beating. The final margin of 6 ½ games to 3 ½ shows that Middlesex were the superior team and coped far better with the greens by holing from everywhere including several chip-ins. Whereas Essex seemed spellbound and unable to master the excellent !"#$%&'(!$')*&+)"#,&*")$%&-&!'*.")&/($0%& greens which were/.112'!'3&4&'!!'3& running at 11 on the stimp (5&'(2.*+&+"26&02#7&-&895:&(;<=>&8?@A& meter. ! !

UNDER 14 LEAGUE MATCH Played at Penham Place – 19th May 2013 Kent vs. Essex vs. Surrey
Having lost heavily to Surrey as Under 13 and Under 12 golfers the Essex boys knew that they would have a battle on their hands in this annual
encounter. Kent are always a strong county at this level so the match promised to be a cracker right from the word go. After all the boys had tee’d off the managers exchanged their information on handicaps and to state it simply “on paper it looked as though Essex and Kent would suffer against the impressive handicaps the Surrey boys have attained”. The lowest handicap for Essex was 6, whilst the highest handicap for Surrey was 6. The same went for the Kent team. But handicaps are nothing in the heat of battle and the Essex boys seemed to grow in determination as the day wore on. There were, of course, some disappointments but the likes of Cai James, Michael Gilbert and Jack Garnett who are all Under 13 players, showed that confidence and determination go a long way in match play and all three scored well against their opponents. Captain Ben Rendell took on the best of Kent and Surrey players and took three out of a possible four points from his encounter, whilst Ryan Tatten and Brad Nunn both gained useful wins in playing their first representative match for the County. The result was a significant win for Surrey due to them overwhelming Kent by 16 points to 4. Essex was also just beaten by Surrey 11 points to 9 whilst Kent beat Essex by the same margin. In totalling up the points Surrey won with 27 points, Essex came second with 18 and Kent third with 15. Pedham Place proved an excellent venue for this competition, provided a course in good condition and made all the players most welcome. Keith Mitchell (Under 14 Manager)

Green Reading This is the first of a number of articles based around green reading which I hope will give you a basic understanding of the key areas I coach my players. As in the full swing there are a number of techniques a player can use to assess the degree of slope or break on a green which are indicated by the photos below. Fig 1: Traditional
Fig 2: Plumb- bobbing
Fig 3: Worms eye view
Fig 4: Too many cooks!
Well I certainly know which method I could not use these days!!! I believe the following headings are some of the key ingredients to become a consistent and successful putter. • Correct read: We can still hole a putt if we do not read the green correctly as in many instances we will manipulate the putter head and stroke to find the hole. This can eventually lead to poor technique, causing unwanted spin producing an inconsistent roll of the ball. A large percentage of golfers drastically under read breaks on the green or have limited comprehension of what to look for which is something that I will be addressing in the next few articles. • Speed: This is a specific area that is largely forgotten as so many players concentrate too much upon the line as in fig 4! The problem with this “group read” is the strength at which the player strikes the ball is not taken into account. If the ball is travelling too slowly towards the end of its journey it is more easily knocked off line and will not stay on the chosen path. However we have all heard of the matchplay saying “never up never in”. Again if the golf ball is travelling too quickly it will never fall into the hole due to the size of the hole being effectively reduced. It is almost like having ‘cling film’ over the hole (we have all experienced days like that!!) According to scientific evidence the most ideal rolling speed of a ball should finish approx. 12” behind the hole if it does not go in, this allows the maximum diameter 4¼ of the hole to capture the ball rather than skidding over the cling film bridge! Try placing a club behind the hole when practicing a 15-20 ft putt to check the consistency of your pace putting. The goal is to have the balls finish between the back of the hole and the club. 42

â€˘â€ˆAim: Putter  Face alignment is absolutely critical, not only do we have to select a point to aim at determining how far right or left of the hole the putt breaks. After this we have to ensure the putter is pointing at that spot at set up in an attempt to avoid any subconscious compensatory movements during the stroke. If we all checked the aim of our putter head on a regular basis we will notice a signiďŹ cant improvement. These areas will be expanded upon over the forthcoming articles which I hope you ďŹ nd beneďŹ cial. “There’s only three things I fear on a golf course, lightning, a downhill putt and Ben Hoganâ€? Sam Snead copyright sarahbennettgolf

www.bodysenseukltd.co.uk Hooray, the sun has appeared, albeit in fits and starts! Finally, a little bump up in your Vitamin D- 10 minutes exposure before slapping on the lotion makes a huge difference. But.... With this comes the risk of dehydration. Ignore optimal hydration at your peril! Golf is a demanding game, walking between 6-10km and being on the golf course for at least four hours can take it's toll. So, to continue to drive the ball longer and consistently accurately then start with a good whole grain breakfast 1.5-2 hours before teeing off. Marry this by refuelling at least every 3-4 holes to prevent your blood sugar from dipping. Hypoglycaemia can cause you to lose concentration and make mistakes. Opt for whole grains, nuts, trail mix and fruit in the front 9 and use those ever popular jelly babies if blood sugar levels drop too low. Similarly keep an eye on your core body temperature. If you're sweating profusely, then water will not be enough (55 percent effective). Sports drinks containing electrolytes may well be the way to go for you to replace lost fluids and valuable nutrients right to the end. Remember, to get the most from life (and golf) this comes from change, not chance. Bodysense Uk Ltd is expanding to larger premises. However, to keep a very up to date view of the leaders of the Divisions check out www.jubileecup.com - by time of publishing it is expected that Round 3 matches will also have been completed. At time of writing there has been a lot of movement in League leadership. Stock Brook Manor, Thorpe Hall (replacing Wanstead), Crondon Park (replacing The Warren), South Essex (replacing Playgolf Colchester), Benton Hall (swapping with Ballards Gore), have all taken the lead this month. However, Bentley, The Rayleigh Club & Colne Valley golf clubs retain their Division leadership. $ Check out the website for full details about the Jubilee Cup Competition: including full Competition Rules player details), and the details of the League ># >#7+4&,B#&)*"$-/3& 7+(such 4&,Bas # &) *"$-eligibility /3& composition, competition 1s 1stt R Round ound of M Matches atches to b bee P Played layed b by y 12th M May ay 2013 draw, plus Div Div A Garon Garon Park Park 4.5 v 4.5 Maldon Maldon match D i v E ppi ng 3.5 v 5.5 Be ntley Div A Epping Bentley completion D i v 6.5 v 2.5 Burs tead (The) (The) Div A Stapleford S t a pl e f ord Abbots A bbot s Burstead dates.

Does the weight of the club actually matter?
That depends on who you ask! By this, I mean that if you ask someone who cannot change the weight of a club, they would probably say no - if you ask someone who knows how to change the weight they will explain just how important it is. Every golfer is different; they require different types of shafts, different heads and different grips - but the weight of the head or the overall weight of the club is so often overlooked because of the difficulty of changing this parameter. b A good example of this is ladies golf equipment. Generally, ladies equipment is extremely light in a bid to increase club head speed but what happens if due to swing characteristics the lady does not require a light club? Why should certain 'categories' of golfer be pigeon holed into equipment? Many ladies actually need heavier clubs in order to reach their potential, but many 'custom fitters' cannot offer this - in my opinion, that's doing half a job. In fact, it's the weight of the club that restrains the fitting options of a golf club more than any other individual component of the club. By this, I mean that many 'fitters' cannot offer the correction specification as they are unable to work outside of 'normal' length as a 'normal' weight cannot be achieved. Further to this, there is no shame in playing a club, either iron or wood, that is shorter

than normal - this is no reflection of you as a golfer! Let's face it when you buy a suit you don't buy the biggest one there because it will make you look better - you buy the one that fits you, same with your golf equipment. An interesting element here is the power of marketing. Many Golfers are led by marketing and want to have their equipment fitted as long as it's into the bracket of what they think they should use - not the right attitude! Generally, in this case, marketing has already made up their mind on what they need. Several months ago, I had a customer who said that they had heard that the new driver from a particular company (not naming any names) was very good. When I asked where he had heard this, he said an advert by that company! Really? I thought the purpose of advertising was to sell product - imagine if the text read "Well, it's not bad, but it's not as good as our current one"! If you have any equipment questions that you would like me to answer in the next edition of Essex Golfer, please get in touch via my contact page at www.leeportergolfsolutions.com © 2013 Lee Porter Golf Solutions Talk to your local PGA Professional or contact me at Hylands Golf Complex on 01277 356016 email: porterlee@mac.com

"Big Bang" exercises!!! THE SQUAT The squat is what I would call a "big bang" exercise, it works just about every single muscle in the body, burns huge amounts of fat, tones and strengthens the legs, butt and back, increases the heart rate, has huge amounts of functional carry over to every sport and last but not least makes you feel like a superhero! Squats can be performed with or without resistance. With resistance is more beneficial but the technique must be spot on before this can happen. Huge amounts of strength can be obtained in just adding squats to your programme. You will also see improvements in your golfing game just by squatting. Technique pointers include.........good straight posture, the heels should never leave the floor, the knees should not go over the toes, the Abdominals should be engaged and full range of motion used. To make this exercise specific to your golf aim to keep the chin under and look to the floor as if you were looking directly at the ball. You could also hold or get a trainer to hold a golf club down the back to keep the posture in line fully. Try adding squats to your exercise routine and golf conditioning programme, at first seek someone, at the gym or hire a trainer to show you how to perform a squat and correctly. Then try for example 3 sets of 20 squats with initially no resistance, leading up to a resisted squat with more sets and varied reps to achieve full benefit. Happy squatting! 50

The seventy two golfers that took part this year enjoyed ideal weather for golf and a relatively fast round, and even if many of them were not too successful with their scoring, they had the satisfaction of contributing greatly to some worthy causes This year, it was held in support of two local charities, Hope and Aid Direct-an Ingatestone based charity taking convoys of aid to Kosovo and Romania, and the Essex Cricket and Community Trust. Funds are used by the latter to encourage disability, street, and girl’s cricket in Essex. Once again, our thanks go to the main sponsor, Keith Brown of the Fryerning Foundation, a local charity trust. The total that was raised for the complete day was just over £5000. First low handicap golfer was Garry Burrow of the ‘Rioja Renegades’ team with 38 stableford points, playing off a handicap of 4, and the high handicap winner was Paul Freeman of the PCubed team with 40 points, playing off 23.Finally the team prize went to the 19th Team (Winners, The 19th Holers. Holers, who were aptly named, as they were From left to right Justin Marsham, Dave Scanlon, found at the 19th hole celebrating their victory Barry Seymour-President of the Rotary Club, Mike Beer, and Chris Faure) after the game.
High Beech Charity Success High Beech Golf Club, situated in the heart of Epping Forest celebrated its 50th anniversary on Saturday the 18th of May with a charity golf day on the 9 hole picturesque and challenging par 3 yellow course. The winning teams donated the prize funds of their starting times to their nominated charity. Competitors ranged from 8 to 80 years of age and from the complete novice to very accomplished players endorsing the appeal that High Beech has. The excellent condition of the course drew praise from many competitors including George Hobbs, a 2 handicap player, who produced one of the highlights of the day when a magnificently struck tee shot with a 6 iron on the 215 yard 2nd hole resulted in a hole in one. Peter Newton owner from the onset and Clark Baker were very pleased with the support and thanked all concerned in helping to raise £1,780. The original concept of providing a high quality, inexpensive golf facility for anyone to use, enjoy, and needing nothing but enthusiasm to be able to participate is still very much to the fore. If you have never played golf and would like to, or started your golfing journey there and moved on, or would simply like a change of scenery High Beech is well worth a visit. Kirkman wins his own trophy Some 15 years ago Mike Taylor & Ian Kirkman the then club secretaries at Five Lakes GC presented the club with a claret jug in an effort to bring together the then two sections at the golf club, after trying in all those years; Ian eventually won his own trophy on Saturday 25th May. 3rd place went to 3 handicapper Chris Hamblion on 35 points, 2nd place went to club President Barry Boniface also on 35 points but with a better back nine holes, however taking the trophy was club secretary Ian Kirkman with 36 points.
Essex Golf Week Success Sarah Bennett PGA Head Teaching Professional at Three Rivers Golf & Country Club, introduced another 15 ladies to the game of golf for her initiative during Essex Golf week. Most of the participants had been introduced via “word of mouth” and through friends and parents of players Sarah currently coaches. The session was 2 hours in duration which Sarah held on a complimentary basis, covering a number of key areas with a Q & A session to complete the day. The introductory group were given the option of attending a number of follow on sessions which included Sarah’s Saturday Ladies group lessons which are always very popular.

Jack Yule wins British Schools & Colleges Players Championship 18 year old Jack Yule, student at the Lee Westwood Golf School in Essex, has won the Players Championship at the British Schools and Colleges National Finals. The competition played at Prince’s Golf Club in Kent had a field of 100 students from across the UK, who had qualified from regional qualifying events. Jack’s round of 69 (-2) was able to secure him victory by one shot. Four golfers finished 2nd equal on a score of 70, which included fellow Lee Westwood Golf School student Ben Wall. Simon Dainty coach at the school said ‘I was so happy to see that Jack’s hard work had paid off. Jack promised he would deliver in the final and is a man of his word. We are all so proud of his success.’ In September, Jack will complete his 2 year full time programme at the Lee Westwood Golf School, based at Stoke-by-Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa, which includes completing a BTEC Extended National Diploma in Sport delivered by Leeds City College. Another great achievement from the competition was from LWGS Essex student Josh Robertson who scored a hole in one (188 yards with a 4 iron) on the 7th on the Himalayas course. Sadly, it was a day too early for the hole in one competition with a cash prize of £7500.

Amanda Head is fully certified, professional Pilates teacher and a part time golfer/hacker born into a family of golf nuts. She remains true to the original methods developed by Joseph Pilates nearly 100 years ago and specialises in small classes (max 8 people), focusing on each individual's needs.
WHY PILATES? Visiting the gym has replaced trips to the pub for most golf professionals. Especially those on Tour. They know they need to improve their fitness levels to cope with the modern game. And they need a special kind of fitness. After all, golfers don’t need to run about. But they do need to create power. Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Lee Westwood and most of the world’s top golfers have come to rely on THE PILATES METHOD to build up their core strength to help create such power. Why? Because it works! Because you can target specific areas of the body and build strength where required. But Pilates isn’t just for athletes. It’s for people of all ages and abilities. And because Pilates is a set of controlled movements, which you perform under personal instruction, there is little risk of damaging another part of your body. That's why other health professionals such as doctors, osteopaths and physiotherapists regularly refer their patients to Certified Pilates Teachers.
Amanda aims to help anyone achieve their own goals safely, in relaxed, comfortable venues in Essex. If you feel that Pilates could be beneficial to you,Amanda is offering ESSEX GOLFER READERS a special introductory taster I hour class for just £5.00 and half price 1-2-1 intro sessions. Amanda can be contacted on 07522 102326 or amanda@flopilates.com or further info on www.facebook.com/flopilates.com

Essex Golf Partnership secures new funding The drive to get more people playing golf in Essex has been boosted with an award of £127,000 Sport England funding for the next four years. The money will support the Essex Golf Partnership, which brings together the men’s, women’s and professionals’ organisations to grow the game in the county. County development officer Helen Tarttelin commented: “This is great news and means we can continue to build on our successes and encourage even more people to get into golf in Essex. “We’ve got a great track record and by generating interest in golf we are supporting the clubs. Over the last four years club membership fell nationally by 13 per cent, but in Essex the figure was three per cent.” Already this year the Partnership has held a Golf Week, supporting the national Get into golf campaign, which attracted about 150 people. Of these, almost two-thirds are expected to go on to further coaching. The Partnership is also establishing 10 Get into golf centres at golf clubs across the county where four-week coaching group courses with PGA professionals will be on offer from just £12 per person. The centres will also offer newcomers to golf a clear pathway from beginner coaching to club membership, with offers such as reduced green fees and range balls and flexible memberships. In addition, efforts are being made to recruit student golfers with a project already underway at Chelmsford College. The Partnership is also surveying women and girls’ golf in the county and considering ways to encourage more to play the game. Helen commented: “The CGP is making a positive impact with initiatives to New golfers at a Get into golf session at Garon Park Golf Club. attract new golfers and the significant amount of support and guidance offered to clubs. But there’s lots more work to be done to encourage even more people to play this great game.” To find out about taster and coaching opportunities visit www.getintogolf.org and click on the activity map.
