I
decided last week that I needed a new golf shirt, so I pop into my local Golf Store in Copford Colchester. I was quite impressed with the range of shirts they had in stock, so I bought two shirts. Whilst I was there I decided to have a good look around, I noticed Ping had a brilliant offer on for new golf clubs, I decided I did not need new golf clubs paid for the shirts and went home. Once I got home I decided to look on a website why I may need new clubs. 1.Your Golf Game has changed. For instance, players who are seeing their handicap go down. 2. If you bought your last set more then three years ago. Golf technology is changing, and the new construction techniques are being used for each generation of clubs, experts say you should change your clubs every three years.
Summer Special 18 holes of golf & ham, egg and chips
3.You are more Senior. Senior is a nice way of saying you are getting older, older players need clubs with more flex in their shafts.
ÂŁ25
4.Too much wear and tear. Regardless of how well you look after your clubs wear and tear will happen, example the grooves in the club will become too smooth.
monday to friday Please call 01245 441 056
5. No progress being made. Some golfers will feel they are making no progress in their game, buying new clubs may provide the change you need to get your game back on track. In the end I did buy a new set of clubs. Purchasing a new set of golf clubs can be expensive but can also be rewarding, hopefully.

COLCHESTER
W
eather in May was once again mixed but I’m sure your course is now starting to peak and looking as if you should be taking it apart (provided you keep out of the rough!). With the next major coming up this month there will be plenty of interest to see whether Rory or Mr Speith can do it again or will we see one of the ‘overrated’ players (Mr Fowler and Mr Poulter) prove people wrong. To coincide with this event we have a 4 day special which includes clothing, woods and balls. All 3 offers make for great savings and will only be on for those 4 days. See opposite page for details. After the great success we had in April on the £20 off a new lithium battery when you bring in your old golf trolley battery we are pleased to announce we will be doing it again in June only, with our partners Powakaddy. Finally just a reminder that if you are thinking of changing your irons please come and see us for a free custom fitting. This takes about 20 minutes and is free when you purchase clubs. In our experience over 80% of people are not standard in their specification and therefore buying a set off the shelf will not help you progress your golf. All of us here at Nevada Bobs Colchester have been in the industry for a minimum of 16 years so we can help you select the right clubs and then do the correct fitting. Hopefully see you soon.

Golf: The Marvellous Mania A
pparently golf has been played for over 800 years and nobody seems to know why. If, like me you have been trying to play our wonderful game for many years, over 50 in my case, or started recently perhaps on retirement, we all get a great deal of pleasure from it, or do we. Like chess, golf is a game that is forever challenging but never to be conquered. Of all forms of exercise invented by man, designed for recreation and relaxation, no other can be guaranteed to produce petulance, despair, nervous exhaustion, mental illness and even attempted suicide. Bin Crosby, a golf addict, recalled a friend who had struggled with golf for many years had not been seen at the club for some time, meeting him out shopping he asked if he was playing much golf, he replied sadly ‘Just days’. Golf has been played for a long time so it cannot be dismissed like Mah-jong or sex as a passing fad. I suppose we must draw the conclusion that if golf in the British Isles is of Scottish derivation it must have been devised to suit the Scottish character. For centuries they searched for a method of self-torture, disguised as a game in which human vanity cannot prevail. The emblem on the club tie of the Royal and Ancient golf club of St Andrews, the Vatican of golf, is St Andrew himself, bearing the cross upon which he was to be tortured and crucified. Only the Scots would have thought to celebrate our game with a tortured saint. Sadly to we who have laboured hard to put together a serviceable golf game only to see it collapse in one afternoon I suppose the symbol rather apt.
No golfer can afford to be an idealist, I can’t imagine Hitler playing in a friendly fourball subjecting his ego to public destruction. Sadly humiliation is the essence of golf, Rory at the Masters a few years ago is a good example, but we all keep coming back. Figures on the addiction to golf are almost as alarming as addiction to hard drugs. There must be a good reason why; the usual ones we give to non- golfers are: 1. We play on a delightful variation of landscape 2. It is rewarding to know that you are totally responsible for the fate of that little white monster and you only have one chance. 3. That golf is the supreme challenge, playing not necessarily against an opponent but always against oneself. The second and third reasons seem to detail the incentives and seem to prove that no man in his right mind would ever play golf. Another reason we play is probably the unique brand of companionship golf generates. A golfer compresses into a few hours all of life’s emotions, hope, envy, betrayal, self-discipline, selfdeceit; A holy grail whipped away when just in reach. Why on earth do we do it. Get Your Swing Off to Great Start!!!! I
f you get your swing off to a good start the rest of the swing usually happens much easier ... Check this position in the mirror or on video the next time you are practicing to see if you are getting your swing off to a good start. Halfway Back. If this is incorrect you will have to make compensations somewhere in the swing to get the club back to a good delivery position. The club head here should be in front of the hands and the club should be just over the toe line. If the club head is inside the hands, as is very common, the club is too inside and on a flat plane and the shaft will point to the right of the target. If the club head is outside the hands the club head will be to the right of the hands and the shaft will be pointing to the left of the target. - 10 - 10 -

Disabled Golfer Wins TSG Masters at Essex’s Warley Park Golf Club
T
heSocialGolfer.com, the online social networking community for golfers celebrated its 2nd annual TSG Masters Championship (in association with GolfGear247.co.uk) at Warley Park Golf Club on 3rd May 2015. Golfers from all over the South East of England and from as far away as Lancashire gathered at the Essex based club, all hoping to be TSG Masters Champion golfer. The members of the online social network had all qualified via a number of different means, some via the website’s monthly leaderboard, some via other TSG Major events with the remaining spaces snapped up via the ballot and/or by special invitation with no one wishing to miss out on the first TSG ‘Major’ of the year. This made for an exciting competition and while some TSGers were familiar with the course layout, most were totally alien to it.The field ranging from 11 handicappers to 27, played the Childerditch and the Warley ‘10 to 18’ loop, two very different layouts offering their own challenges, the latter including the superb 18th Par 3 signature hole. The event was won by well known disabled golfer Richard Saunders, who has been a great advocate of the site since its launch in 2010. After 18 holes, Richard Saunders (based in Essex) scored a fantastic 44 Pts off his 20 handicap with Judy Lilley 2nd (Kent – 39 Pts) and 3rd Tuan Nguyen (Kent – 35 Pts). There was also some fun to be had with 2 x Nearest Pins and a ‘Straightest Drive’ keeping the day alive for those that were not troubling the leaderboard and a Par 3 Competition to add to the drama on the day. Other winners on the day included popular ‘TSGers’, Lee Benson (Herts), Paul Thorne (Essex), Matt Sutton (Kent) with Richard Saunders adding the Par 3 trophy to his haul. However, we’ll leave the final words to our new TSG Masters Champion… “This is the second TSG Masters that I have attended and I thoroughly enjoyed the event… It’s a great opportunity for the members of the TSG to get together and enjoy the camaraderie that exists between them. I would like to thank Warley Park Golf Club and their members for allowing us to play in what is a

very tight and demanding golf course – where straight drives and correct club selection is most important to small undulating greens. I had one of those days were everything went right. The Social Golfer continues to raise the profile for disabled golfers in conjunction with BALASA, the national disabled golfing charity and the funds they raise helps BALASA members to have buggies at their National Championships, their support is very much appreciated.” Kevin Smith, Director of Golf at the venue said “We were delighted to host the TSG Masters event for the second consecutive year. The TSG members are always very respectful to us and our members and they always compliment us on the condition and layout of the course. We are delighted to be on the roster for their events and look forward to them returning to the club again 2016!” www.thesocialgolfer.com

so should I change to a lower loft?
I HIT MY DRIVER HIGH,
A
question I get asked quite a bit. Fact is, believe it or not, changing from a 10.5 driver to a 9.5 driver will probably make no difference at all. Why? Well, we are talking about the 3 lofts in golf – Static, Dynamic and Spin. Spin loft we will leave to another time but let me define the other two: Static: Static or Stated Loft is the loft on the golf club as it sits in your bag.Wether it's an adjustable head or a fixed head the loft will be pretty close to what is written on it. Dynamic: This is one of the key ingredients that contribute to the height of the shot. Dynamic Loft is the actual loft on the golf club as it strikes the golf ball. This can be very different to the Static Loft as this loft is determined by the Golfers swing and how the shafts reacts during the swing. In reality a golfer could see a difference of eight to nine degrees in their Dynamic Loft with different
golf shafts so you can now see how little the one degree difference in Static Loft actually makes. Both of the images below are from the same golfer (me), on the same day, with the same driver, same loft but with different golf shafts. As you can see my ‘Club Attack’ changes hugely and in turn changes my Dynamic Loft. Between these two shots there was roughly seven degrees of difference in the launch angle and around thirty feet in height. With a higher ball flight the ‘Angle Of Descent’ or the angle the ball comes out the sky will become steeper leading to less roll – giving a shorter drive all round. Another thing to consider here is the ‘Ease Of Use Factor’ when it comes to loft. In a nutshell the lower the loft the more opportunity of increased side spin so for many Golfers the quest for a stronger ball flight leads to a bigger slice. My moral here is simple, get a driver loft that suits you – don’t try to make a swing that suits the driver’s loft.

PITCHING KEEP IT SIMPLE K
eeping things simple could apply to most areas in the game of golf, this month I am looking at pitching the ball. Firstly, the setup, keep your alignment square to your target, this position will feel and look familiar, as in picture 1. Secondly as you swing allow the club to move on a plane to the inside around your body, as I am showing in picture 2, this will ensure a shallow
1
angle of attack so that I only bruise the ground under the ball, not take a large divot. And finally allow the body to turn through and finish in balance as I have achieved in picture 3. The simpler you keep your technique the more repeatable and consistent you will be.

Happy golfing

• Protect your skin with clothing – don’t forget to wear a hat that protects your face, neck and ears. • Avoid outdoor sporting activity between 11am and 3pm if possible. This is when the sun is at its most powerful. • When choosing a sunscreen look for a high protection SPF (SPF 30 or more to protect against harmful UVA). • Apply plenty of sunscreen 15-30 minutes before going out in the sun and reapply every two hours. • Be sure to reapply sunscreen after swimming and towel-drying. If you’re still not convinced, consider these facts. Seven people die from skin cancer every day in the UK, with rates of malignant melanoma rising faster than any other type of common cancer. There are over 100,000 new cases of all skin cancers diagnosed in the UK each year and on average, someone who dies from skin cancer typically loses 20 years of their life. There are at least two 15-34 year olds being diagnosed with malignant melanoma every day in the UK. Dr Bav Shergill, Consultant Dermatologist & British Skin Foundation Trustee explains: “Most skin cancers can be cured if detected early. The best way to detect skin cancer is to check your skin regularly, about once a month. You should examine the skin all over your body, from top to toe. Ask a friend or member of your family to look at areas you can’t see such as your scalp, ears and back. Look out for moles or patches of skin that are growing, changing shape, developing new colours, inflamed, bleeding, crusting, red around the edges, particularly itchy, or behaving unusually. “Remember, if in doubt, get it checked out straight away. Suffolk Golf Festival Returns to Iconic British Seaside Holiday Village
Thorpeness Golf Club & Hotel to Host its 2nd Annual Festival of Golf from July 29-31
T
horpeness Golf Club and Hotel is to host its second annual Festival of Golf in the heart of one of Britain's most iconic and quirky seaside holiday villages. The inaugural Thorpeness Festival of Golf, the first of its kind ever staged in East Anglia, was launched last year in the Suffolk village best known for a house that floats among the clouds, windmills, mock-Tudor architecture and a manmade boating lake that inspired children’s fairytale story Peter Pan. The three day festival of golf runs from July 2931 and will be played over the 93-year-old Thorpeness golf course designed by five-time Open Champion James Braid. It is rated as one of the finest coastal heathland courses in Southern England. Golfers entering the festival will enjoy individual and team competitions, evening entertainment, events and coaching clinics with European Tour coach Bill Ferguson – former coach to Colin Montgomerie – and Thorpeness Golf Club Head Professional Frank Hill. Last year’s festival attracted golfers from across the UK as well as entrants from Suffolk, Norfolk,
Essex and East Anglia and the organisers hope to establish it as a popular event on the amateur golf calendar.
Ajay Anthony, general manager at Thorpeness Golf Club & Hotel, said: “Thorpeness is an ideal destination for a summer golf festival, a quintessential English seaside village with a great golf course surrounded by outstanding natural beauty. We are offering a range of options to golfers, from great value golf breaks packages for the entire festival to pay and play entries into competitions and social events for golfers local to Suffolk.”

Jones Takes Golf Foundation Honour
A
passionate and successful junior golf coach from Essex has been honoured with the Golf Foundation’s prestigious Sinclair Award. Ben Jones, PGA Professional at Garon Park, has introduced more than 1600 young people to the game in the last two years. And of those over 450 have returned to the club for further golfing experiences, with more than 100 going on to become fully-fledged members. The award, which acknowledges PGA Professionals who have made an outstanding contribution to grassroots golf, was presented during the foundation’s annual award ceremony on the eve of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. Jones, who has been a fully-qualified pro for the last six years, used to spend most of his time focusing on work in the pro shop. But he has quickly developed a packed teaching diary, thanks in no small part to the 40 primary schools he works with on a regular basis. “It was hard work at first, making that transition from shop pro to teaching pro,” he admitted. “But I’ve really relished the chance to get stuck into it and I really enjoy it, it’s incredibly rewarding.
“Winning an award like this is completely overwhelming, it’s not something I ever really considered as something that could happen to me. “All I wanted to do was get as many people down to the club as possible so they could get involved and just see how great it is to play golf. “To see how that has spiralled and to see so many kids involved now is something I’m really proud of.” Jones hosts the level two Tri Golf Festival as part of the Essex School Games, which 10 schools take part in every year. And a further 10 primary schools benefit from free integrated golf days at Garon Park which include group coaching, par-three playing opportunities and prizes. “I just went to schools and asked if they’d be interested in offering free taster sessions,” he explained. “I was overwhelmed with the response but it means I can meet so many kids in one go, and potentially make many more of them turn into golfers. “I’m hoping I can get many more involved over the coming months and make a real difference to the way they see the sport.”

JUST ONE OF
GOLF’S MYTHS B
efore I was forced to retire from competitive golf on the Ladies European Tour I was very fortunate to be paired with Annika Sorenstam then world number 1 in one of the major Let tour events. Annika’s head position at impact would go against the grain of many a club golfer. Annika played with a pronounced head swivel which assisted her movement through impact. I hear all too often “I have been working on keeping my head down” This phrase seems to be the most utilised on and off the course. It is always referred to as the reason for a topped shot or a poor strike by many players during a round of golf. I see many golfers who by trying to keep their head transfixed on the ground where the ball lay actually initiates and compounds their swing fault. The problem with “keeping your head down” I believe are as follows:
The speed at which we swing a golf club ranges anywhere from 50mph to 95 plus mph. I liken “keeping the head down” whilst fixed on the ball post impact as if you are making an emergency stop.
The body is suddenly unable to move freely which ultimately has a knock on effect on the potential weight shift achieved from the right side of the backswing to the left side on the follow through (right handed golfer). This can cause the arm radius on the follow through to shorten with a topped shot a very probable outcome. The golfer is also suseptible to “hanging back” on their non target foot through impact, again with a variety of outcomes.
- 26 -
As a TPI Certified L2 Fitness Golf Instructor, I appreciate the importance and how this sudden “braking effect” interrupts the flow of the swing. This is not ideal for the body placing stress on the joints and possible neck stiffness if this identified as an area of weakness via the TPI screens. Just let the body flow naturally and slow down gradually, don’t make an emergency stop! One of my favourite training and warm up aids is the Orange whip which really allows my clients to feel the continuous flowing movement due to the weighted head with limited inhibitions and potential injuries, finishing in a well balanced follow through.

New Help For Golf Clubs To Target More Women T
here’s new help available for golf clubs to attract more women to play the sport and to become club members. England Golf has produced a range of factsheets, supported by the findings from focus group research, golf clubs, other sports and other relevant insight. Women account for only 15 per cent of golf club members in England and, on average, there are 50 vacancies for women per club. In major European countries women account for around 30 per cent of golf club members. Lauren Spray, the Women and Girls’ Participation Manager for England Golf, commented: “Women offer the largest growth area in golf, with 63% of clubs targeting them for membership. “We’ve produced these factsheets to offer suggestions and recommendations based on the latest research and learnings from clubs which are having success. Clubs which want to grow their women’s membership can pick and mix from a wide range of ideas.” The factsheets cover key areas including recruitment, retention, playing opportunities, membership, websites and social media, club environment and volunteers. Guidance on marketing and communication will be available shortly. The key messages are underlined by focus group research carried out for England Golf by Sports Marketing Surveys Inc. This showed that: • Women prefer to learn golf in a group where everyone is new to the game. They feel uncomfortable making their first attempts in the presence of people who are already competent. • The social side of golf is very important to women. Introductory sessions should include time for a chat over coffee or a glass of wine. • Taster sessions should highlight the fun side of the game. • Equipment should be available so women can try the game and without spending much money.
• It’s vital to challenge the view that golf clubs are not welcoming. Many women and young people are staying away from golf because of the misconception that clubs are elitist • Flexibility is all-important, whether it’s flexible membership packages or flexible ways of playing the game which take advantage of shorter formats. The factsheets are just one of England Golf’s initiatives to attract more women and girls into golf and a pilot scheme is to be launched shortly
to target women in selected counties. In addition, a Women and Girls’ Advisory Group has been set up to create a forum for discussion and to provide feedback. Increasing the number of regular players and club members are two of the seven key themes of the England Golf Strategic Plan 2014-17, Raising Our Game. The strategy calls on all who care about the sport to work together to create a brighter future for golf. The factsheets can be viewed at www.englandgolf.org/womenandgirls

O
n 15th May, the Upminster Ladies Golfers Choir “Que Sera” performed in front of 150 Golf Club members to help raise funds their Captain, Chris Pinder’s charity; Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research. Lady Captain Sally Pinder, wife of Chris, thought it would be a good idea, to raise money for the charity, as her husband Chris has Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia. Sally had the idea of starting a lady's golf club choir and with the help
of her neighbour, Gill Cook as musical director and 35 ladies; they formed the choir and have been rehearsing since January. All the ladies play golf every Tuesday at Upminster, and most of the ladies had never sung in a choir before. Sally said the choir members had thoroughly enjoyed their experience and were thrilled that so many people came to support them and help raise £1350 for the charity.
Titleist Celebrates Long-Running Success Story at U.S. Open
T
he success and superior performance of Titleist golf balls is underlined every week across worldwide professional tours, but no record could underline this any more than continuing as the #1 golf ball of choice for the majority of the field at the U.S. Open for 67 consecutive years and counting. It was 1949 at Medinah Country Club that Titleist first celebrated its position as the #1 ball at the Major Championship; and on 18th June, when the world’s best players tee it up for this year’s U.S. Open at Chambers Bay Golf Club, it will mark the 67th consecutive year that Titleist golf balls have been trusted by the overwhelming majority of the field. Since the start of the year,Titleist golf balls have once again dominated the counts across worldwide professional tours, with over 8,559 players choosing to tee it up with a Pro V1 or Pro V1x golf ball, more than five times the nearest competitor with 1,532*. It mirrors those seen every year across all levels of the game, with golfers of all abilities, from leading amateurs to
club professionals, trusting the quality and consistency of the #1 ball in golf. The count at the U.S. Open continues the overwhelming success of Titleist golf balls at Major Championships, having completed the clean sweep as the #1 ball of choice at each of the four Majors in 2014. This included The Open Championship, where Titleist continued its record as the choice of the majority of the field since records began. At this first major of 2015, The Masters, Titleist golf balls were not only the overwhelming favourite of the field, but also the choice of the champion, Jordan Spieth, who trusted the feel and consistency of the New Pro V1x to claim his maiden Major Championship. To celebrate this landmark achievement, Titleist has produced a number of limited edition Pro V1 and Pro V1x golf balls complete with a ‘67’ play number, accompanied by unique anniversary packaging. These limited edition balls are available in selected Titleist accounts. www.Titleist.co.uk

The Faldo Wedge
Sir Nick surely would have been proud to learn that an impressive total of 48 clubs were represented at this year’s competition, played at The Essex Golf & Country Club. The tournament aims to inspire and encourage boys and girls to play competitive golf, and the trophy itself is a wedge that Nick Faldo used when he won the Open Championship at St Andrews in 1990. The 18 hole stableford event, played off full handicap, is for teams of three players, of either sex, who are under 18 at the start of the year – with all three scores counting. Playgolf Colchester returned the winning team score of 120 points and will go on to compete in the 36 hole England Golf Junior Champion Club competition at Frilford Heath on 10 & 11 August. Second were Stoke by Nayland B on 113 points, with Stock Brook Manor’s B team in third with 112 points – one more than their A team. The best individual score by a girl was 41 points from Ysobel Lush, from Langdon Hills. Max Smith from Clacton was the highest scoring boy with 43 points, just beating Oliver Reardon (Burnham on Crouch) , Harry Burr (Thorndon Park) and Greg Crawley (Stock Brook Manor) on countback. In ideal conditions, the course presented a long and tricky challenge for the youngsters, despite playing off the yellow tees. Thanks go to The Essex Golf & Country Club for hosting the event, providing catering for a significant number of players and to the greens staff for their hard work on the course. The Essex Golf Union acquired the Faldo Wedge it in 1994 when the first competition was won by Orsett, and it has now become an eagerly awaited fixture. - 35 -

County Team Eastern Counties Foursomes Championships
An impressive unbeaten performance from England “A Squad” member Bobby Keeble and partner Taylor Carter helped the team finish a close second to the hosts Lincolnshire at Seacroft Golf Club, near Skegness. The pair gained 6 ½ points out of seven with winning scores of: 9&7, 7&6, 6&5, 7&6, 1up, and 3&1. Ross Dee and Mitchel Sarling played their part by securing 5 ½ points, while Andy May and Jay Beisser finished with three birdies and a par in one of their afternoon matches to defeat a strong Lincolnshire pairing 3&1. In the end, Essex finished with 24 points, which was two short of Lincolnshire’s winning tally. Essex were represented by: County Captain Ross Dee (Crondon Park), Mitchel Sarling, Taylor Carter, and Arthur Leonard (Rochford Hundred), Elliott Oxlade (Chelmsford), Jordan Wallace (Abridge ), Bobby Keeble (Abridge),Todd Clements and Scott Hudson (Braintree), Jay Beisser (The Rayleigh Club) and Andy May (Boyce Hill). - 36 -

Essex v Kent
Essex were beaten by a strong Kent Golf Union team in the annual friendly at Woolston Manor. The top foursomes match saw Kent’s two strongest players beaten 1up in a fantastic battle by Ricky Lee & Jay Beisser – but that was to be the only point for Essex in the morning foursomes, after which they trailed 4-1. Another exciting game saw Under 18’s duo Jack Dyer & Michael Gilbert forge an early 2up lead against Kent County captain Danny Curtis and his son Joe, before slipping to a 1down defeat on the 18th. Kent were also too strong in the afternoon singles and ran out 6 ½ to 3 ½ winners. However, Michael Gilbert and George Whitbread had strong 5&4 wins, backed up by County Captain Ross Dee who won 4&3. Also victorious was Jay Beisser who was top points scorer as he continues to regain his form following a spell in the professional ranks. Essex were represented by: County Captain Ross Dee (Crondon Park), Louis Lazarus and Tony Ames (Romford), Ricky Lee and Jay Beisser (The Rayleigh Club), Michael Gilbert (Chelmsford), Jack Dyer (Rochford Hundred) George Whitbread (Colchester), Billy Deville (Bentley ), Jordan Wallace (Abridge). - 37 -

Essex v Bedfordshire Essex began their defence of the Daily Telegraph Salver in style, with their first England Golf South Eastern Group (North) League match of the season, at Chelmsford Golf Club. Despite going into the match as favourites, the team exceeded expectations by winning 8 ½ to 3 ½. Captain Ross Dee led by example as he and partner Ricky Lee helped Essex to a 3-1 lead at the lunch interval with a strong 5&4 performance in the top foursomes match. The afternoon singles saw 6&5 wins for Jay Beisser, Elliott Oxlade, Ed Fullerlove and Andy May. These victories were supported by gritty performances from Todd Clements and Taylor Carter, the latter exchanging birdies with his opponent late on to secure a hard fought halved match. The standard of golf from the Essex players was very high, with several birdies and eagles recorded, and the highlight saw Ed Fullerlove almost holing in one at the par 4 second hole. Essex were represented by: County Captain Ross Dee (Crondon Park), Andy May (Boyce Hill), Jay Beisser and Ricky Lee (The Rayleigh Club), Elliott Oxlade (Chelmsford), Todd Clements and Ed Fullerlove (Braintree), and Taylor Carter (Rochford Hundred).
SENIORS TEAM Seniors v Bedfordshire Essex fielded their strongest ever team for the match away to Bedfordshire – but were undone by a late switch in courses which gave the hosts vital “local knowledge”. Arriving at John O’Gaunt Golf Club, the team found that instead of playing the main course the match was being staged on the newer and shorter Carthagena course. The day got worse when full county player Mark Stones was drawn against Bedfordshire’s experienced full county player Phil Sutton, and went down 3&2. Newly qualified Keith Davies lost on the 17th, while his Chelmsford team-mate Peter Cumberworth halved. Then County Champion Tikki Hadjioannou needed to win the 18th to rescue a half, but narrowly failed to do so. Next up, Trevor Patmore had a birdie putt on the 18th to win, but when he left it short it was another halved match. Then Chris Aukett was beaten with five holes still to play. Steve Hazell secured the team’s first victory 4&3, which meant the overall match could still be halved if the final three matches were won. Geoff King (2&1) and Mark Lazarus (1up) did secure victories, but Mike Copping lost on the 18th and the team went down 6-4 – highlighting the importance of playing a practice round on the relevant course ahead of such fixtures. - 38 -

U18 TEAM U18 v BB&O & Middlesex In another set of South East triangular matches, two resounding victories by The Warren’s Callum Hilton helped the U18 team come out on top in the matches against BB&O and Middlesex at Stock Brook Manor. Hilton recorded winning scores of 8&7 and 8&6 on a day which saw a final score of: Essex 4, Middlesex 2, BB&O 0. Three regular team members were unavailable as they were sitting exams, so in stepped Tom Fenton (Warley), Zach Chegwidden (Orsett) and Ryan Tattan (U16 from Chelmsford). Skipper Louis Lazarus (Romford) led out the team, followed by Ryan Cox (Warley), and Bailee Curran (Orsett), and all three got off to winning starts. Callum Pipe (Braintree) won one match but lost the other when his birdie on the 18th was no match for an eagle. Fenton also won one and lost one, while Tattan marked his debut with two wins, 4&2 and 5&4. - 39 -

Essex Open Championship Pro-Am
3 Tie for Pro Event at Essex Open Pro-Am Luke Eggleston, Andy Shakespear and Mark Baker, joint professional winner of the Pro-Am.
2 under par 67 was good enough to share the Professional prize at Wanstead Golf Club in the curtain raiser to the 95th Essex Open. Luke Eggleston from LE Custom Fitting, Andy Shakespear from the Warren Golf Club and Mark Baker from Colchester Golf Club all came in with the same score to win the event by one shot from Matt King from the Rayleigh Driving Range and Brett Taylor of Brett Taylor Golf.
In the team event which comprised an impressive 41 teams, the winning team was from the newly named Brentwood Golf Club led by Professional Michael Jones with amateurs Nick Hart, Clive Bastoe and Andy Carpenter. A score of 86 stableford points was enough to win on a countback from the local team led by Chris Cutchie from Colchester Golf Club.

95th Essex Open Championship
T
Lee becomes fourth amateur to lift Essex Open in 95 years Essex Open winner Ricky Lee with PGA in Essex Captain David Hawkins and Bruce Benson from the sponsors Mulalley.
A play-off was necessary after 36 holes in continuously pouring rain to separate Ricky Lee from The Rayleigh Club and Mark Davis from Thorndon Park Golf Club. Both players finished on 139 which was 1 over par for the 36 holes and remarkable scoring in such appalling conditions. A birdie at the first extra hole was enough for Lee to lift the trophy and become the fourth amateur to win the championship. He joins a small but distinguished group which includes Britain’s finest ever amateur, Sir Michael Bonnallack who won the trophy in 1969. For Davis, who flew out to play in the US Seniors PGA Championship the following day, it was a sad end but he did have the compensation of taking the winner’s cheque. In 3rd place was Matt King from Rayleigh Driving Range on 142, one shot ahead of Scott Clark from Benton Hall. The second amateur was Ben David from Colchester Golf Club and third amateur was the former winner of the title Ben Horton from Thorndon Park Golf Club.
Forthcoming Event Although the Essex PGA season has drawn to a close after the Essex Open, we still have our annual Junior Pro-Am on July 5th. This will again take place at Colne Valley Golf Club with the first tee time at 12-30pm.The entry fee is £90 for the team of 2 juniors and a professional and includes goody bags for the juniors, barbeque and prizes. Full details are available from the PGA in Essex and contact details are shown above.
he 2015 programme of Meetings for the Society of Essex Lady Captains got underway in mid May with their AGM and Spring Meeting at Romford Golf Club. The Committee were complimented on the smooth running of the short but informative AGM. The ladies teed off from 12 noon in the drawn 4BBB competition. Whilst there had been grey clouds and heavy showers mid morning, the afternoon proved dry and sunny although the wind was gusty at times. All the past and present Lady Captains enjoyed a delicious two course meal in the evening before the prize giving. There was fierce competition for the minor places resulting in many count backs. In third place were Jenny Rowe (Braintree) and Barbara Rowe (Stoke by Nayland) with 37 points, 2nd were Yvonne Davies (Frinton) and Harriette McGinlay (Toot Hill) with 39 points. In first place and winners of the Iris Stranks Salver with a fabulous score of 43 points were Jane Wright (Channels) and Jan Eves (Colne Valley). Thanks to Romford Golf Club for hosting

The Jubilee Cup
Update from Jubilee Cup Committee, sponsored by Seabrook Warehousing, and reported by Chairman Phil Redhead
W
e are now coming to a crucial point in the Jubilee Cup 2015 season with only one League round left (Round Four) prior to the arrangements of the Knock Phase of Quarter and then Semi Finals etc. By the time you read this we will have the results in, and being posted to the website, that will determine who progresses to the final stages from all our 2015 entrants! There has been some changes in the current leadership of the Leagues and some maintenance of position. Some nice local rivalry going on in Division B between Colchester GC and PlayGolf Colchester will see a great contest to battle to the next round, and a sterling performance by Woolston Manor in Division E, and Division H’s Forrester Park (but certainly still some work to do!). Division G is certainly also a hot-bed of competition given both The Essex and Ballards Gore have two out of 2 victories current. From a very personal perspective, a great half was secured between The Notleys and Burnham on Crouch in drizzly wet conditions but played in very high spirits, and I must thank my Burnham playing partner Wilf White despite pip-ing me at the last hole – tremendous company, and a wonderful host club! Check out the all the full Round Three results at: www.jubileecup.com/matches2015/draw3.htm which are due by 7th June to be played. I have had the pleasure of playing both in Jubilee Cup and Norman Plum recently, both well played and sported, and on a number of occasions I’ve heard of clubs who are interested in joining the competition – I would love to be able to introduce more clubs into the 2016 competition so please push any contacts my way if you hear of any! toke by Nayland Golf Club has its share of difficult lies as does any golf course. They might be daunting at first but if you have an understanding of how to play these shots it will help to improve your striking, thereby creating lower scores. Below are some key steps to remember for each type of lie:
Uphill Lie • When setting up for this lie make sure the ball position is nearer the higher foot. • Your shoulders should be level with the ground as in picture 1; this will give you the feeling of having more weight on your back foot. • When swinging the club try to keep your balance as you would on a normal shot, try to finish the swing as normal on the front foot. Depending on the severity of the slope this may or may not be possible. • When playing an uphill shot an extra club may be needed due to the ball being hit higher in flight than normal. Downhill Lie • When setting up for this lie make sure the ball position is nearer the higher foot. • Your shoulders should be level with the ground as in picture 2; this will give you the feeling of having more weight on your front foot.
1
2
• Most players try to help the ball in the air from this lie, but you don’t need to force the movement. Instead, try walking after your ball so you move down the slope in the follow through, again finishing on your front foot.
- 44 -
• When playing this shot the ball will fly lower and farther than normal due to the club face being de-lofted by the steepness of the slope. To help combat this outcome take less club. Ball Above Your Feet
3 • The ball position should be in the middle of your stance as this will make the ball central to your body. • As you can see in picture 3, the golfer’s posture appears more upright than normal, which is a result of the ball being closer to the golfer than normal. If the slope is severe you will have more weight on your heels than usual. To help combat this you could grip farther down the club, making the club shorter and giving you more control. • When swinging on this lie you are more prone to rotate your body, which would create a ball flight shape that will move right to left. Counteract this by aiming your shot to the right of the target (for right hander’s).
This is probably the hardest lie to play in golf. The reason for this is that the ball feels further away from you so naturally you try to keep your balance by standing taller during the shot, thus topping or thinning it as you are then even farther away from the ball. • The ball position should be in the middle of your stance as this will make the ball central to your body. • To help combat the slope, the golfer’s knees are more bent and more tilt is needed from the hips to allow the golfer to reach the bottom of the ball. See picture 4.Try to keep your knees solid in this position so that you do not lose your balance; this should allow you to strike the ball properly. • Balance is a very important part of this shot. It is advisable to take an extra club to help generate the distance you need, because the shorter the swing you create the more control you will have for the shot. • Due to the balance issue the body will find it hard to rotate so aim left of the target (for right hander’s) as the ball will move left to right in the air. The secret to all these shots is balance so try to make your set up like it would be on a flat lie: keep your shoulders level with the slope, keep your body weight on the lower foot and make sure the ball position is closer to the higher foot. To help with your balance it is advisable to take an extra club; this way you don’t try to hit the ball as hard, which means that you have more control.

Where’s Your
Beach Body?
L
et’s hope for a fantastic June – lots of sun, counting down the days and weeks until your golfing holiday and aiming to get more beach ready! Whether you’re stripping off or covering up, we all feel better if we’re fit for the summer. BBQ spatulas ready in the coming weeks too, but with the accompaniment of a delicious, superfood salad, try these ... Goat Cheese and Beet Salad Beets are back! This salad features bright-red roots alongside thinly sliced carrots. It’s a recipe perfect for any fan of root veggies. (Bonus: The high levels of potassium in beets help your body build muscle and proteins.) Toss the vegetables with pistachios (for fibre and protein), goat’s cheese, and baby greens for a speedy, tasty lunch. Greek Yogurt Chicken Salad This chicken salad recipe uses Greek yogurt (which is packed with probiotics that can aid digestion and supplies a healthy dose of protein) rather than mayonnaise for a deliciously creamy and healthy sandwich filling. Apples, almonds, and green onions add tasty crunch to this light, glutenfree lunch. Quinoa Salad with Red Pepper and Cilantro Quinoa is a powerhouse seed that provides a light but protein-rich base for this cool salad. Topped with a citrusy vinaigrette made of cilantro, lime, and mustard, this meal will leave you full without the empty calories in most pasta salads.
Superfood Salad.
Spinach, Avocado, and Kiwi Salad This salad is primarily made of fruit, with spinach playing second fiddle. Featuring kiwis (containing 117 percent of the daily recommended value of vitamin C) and avocados (which are loaded with healthy fats and vitamins like B6, which promote healthy skin), these superfruits make this salad super-delicios. Stacked Salmon Salad Avocado, yellow squash, and whole roasted red piquillo peppers are neatly layered to make this breadless “sandwich.” Yellow squash not only has high levels of vitamin C, but its high content of lutein helps protect eye health. Oven-baked salmon acts as the bread to the layers of antioxidant-rich veggies. The best part? This stacked gourmet lunch takes less than 30 minutes to prepare. Bon Appetite

PGA Professional Bennett Delight at Golf Fore Recovery Event
The Help for Heroes Recovery Centre, Chavasse VC House.
S
arah Bennett, Head PGA Professional at Three Rivers Golf & Country Club and England U18 East Regional Head Coach initiated and delivered the inaugural SB Golf Fore Recovery Challenge Trophy last year.To her delight Sarah has seen the event participation grow by 75% with 21 golfers attending the event held this week. The event was the brainchild of Sarah in 2013 which was to initiate and present her annual Golf Fore Recovery trophy for Men and Women in a team formatted event. Most of the players have been associated with the various Help for Heroes recovery centres within the UK with her goal to demonstrate golf can aid their various stages of recovery. “Helping veterans, wounded, injured and sick personnel to gain confidence, try a new or to continue a sport whilst offering a mix of fun and competitive element”. This has always been Sarah’s goal which has been worked upon over the past 5 years locally which she has now transformed her project to a National level. One player said “The day was a great success all due to Sarah’s hard work and dedication, with one player in my group being a transformed person, his aim was to play a few holes but completed all 18 with a change in his selfconfidence and self -esteem being noticed by all
who knew him, which is the magic of this event.” Bennett started the golf programme in the Chavasse VC Recovery Centre in 2009 with the assistance of the Help for Heroes well being team. During the first year she held her first ever golf day for the residents, raising enough funds to purchase the very first piece of golf equipment; a 9 ft Huxley mat. The facilities have grown boasting a putting green and two full size nets which Sarah uses on a regular basis continuing her work with the Colchester Recovery Centre.
“This year I saw a 75% increase in the numbers of players with the following Help for Heroes Recovery Centres being represented; Chavasse House VC – Colchester, Plymouth RC, Phoenix

RC and Tedworth RC. It has always been my goal since I started golf within the Colchester Recovery Centre to encourage those wishing to try the game providing the ideal environment. I am thrilled the event has grown in a short space of time. The team representing Phoenix RC lead by Rob Hood retained the trophy by the same slim margin as last year by just one point with Colchester Recovery Centre finishing runners up. Rob commented “We would like to Thank Sarah and her team of volunteers for putting on another successful event, golf has become for some wounded, injured and sick soldiers a great release against the many pressures the guys find themselves under.” Sarah said “I am extremely grateful for the support of Three Rivers Golf & Country Club who provided the perfect facilities for the second consecutive year. I would also like to thank my friends from Sabona of London, whom I have been associated for a number of years during my playing career, for their generous donation of an engraved memento to each participant. In addition to Greensleeve Golf who kindly donated the team prizes, along with the members who gave up their time to assist on the day and my Mum for baking the cakes.” One comment received from the day making a lasting impact was “ Sarah, a day which I know you put your heart and soul into, great to see so many smiles from people who enjoyed the day. I would like to thank you for your commitment and passion you show towards this event which really makes a difference.” Sarah can be contacted via www.sarahbennettgolf.co.uk - 49 -

GOLF ETIQUETTE Some people may be asking, “Why would I need a book about correct conduct? I know how to behave myself.” Although integrity and fairness are an excellent basis, good manners alone are not enough in golf. A certain amount of specific knowledge is essential, especially in the light of the dangers involved in sport. Furthermore, golf also involves social conventions that are not based directly on accepted behaviour patterns. The etiquette is just as important as the rules of play and it ensures that all players can enjoy their game as much as possible. This book does not claim to cover every single issue but it does contain everything you need to know in order to be welcomed at virtually every course in the world. However, please bear in mind that the etiquette may very slightly from club to club. Therefore find out about the Local Rules in advance, follow all the instructions and heed the information on the notice boards. You will then be a welcome guest and playing partner on any course – irrespective of your ability level.

Connect With Your Core PART
ONE ... C
What is
Core Stability?
onnect with your core will consist of 4 parts, this month I will cover part 1! Core stability is essential for any golfer. However, more often than not the core is trained incorrectly. If the core is trained incorrectly it can do more harm than good. Many golfers when told they need to train their core start doing sit ups and just working their tummy muscles. The core is made up of many more muscles than this! Yes, the Abdominals are part of the core but are broken up into 4 parts ... the transverse Abdominal, the internal and external obliques and the rectus Abdominals. All 4 very different in their function therefore needing specific work.
The back muscles are a big part of the core musculature in my eyes. Without a good set of back muscles it would not matter how strong your core is! Another part of your core in my opinion are the Glutes ... gluteus maximus, gluteus medius and gluteus minimus, the muscles that consist of your butt! The Glutes are essential stabilisers providing support to every muscle in the body, most importantly your back.
So, over the next 3 articles I am going to discuss how I would go about training the “core to achieve complete core stability and how to connect with your core so that it has a functional carryover into your golfing game. Part 2 will cover the Abdominals, all 4 parts, what they do and how you can best strengthen them.

Joy for
Jeff & Linda Jeff Johnstone approaching the eleventh.
C
olchester Golf Club’s Coronation Cup is both a test of golf and endurance. Played over 36 holes this all day competition is one, which always throws up a surprise or two, but it was no surprise to see Jeff Johnston come out on top. His two-round total of a nett par 140 showed classical symmetry. After a nett 72 in the morning he churned in a competition winning nett 68 in the afternoon’s round to put him one shot clear of a chasing pack of four. Leading after the morning’s round with a nett 69 was Ian Parry (9) but a nett 73 during the afternoon showed how competitive it was getting at the top. Duncan Stewart (9) with a nett 70 after the morning also fell away as the day progressed. It was left to Richard Withnall (4) to push close with rounds of 74 and 67. Both his rounds were impressive with only a double bogey at the 12th during the morning round keeping him away from the top spot and giving him second place after a countback. Others sharing the same score were the Williams twins Ben and Joe, both off five handicap. Ben had a triple bogey to stomach on the fifth during his morning’s round whilst his brother Joe had a surprising eight on the par five ninth to set him back. James Angel (4) was the one separating the twins on the countback in fourth spot. Johnston, however, kept it all together and despite a double bogey on the last just kept his head above the rest to win the competition. One of the highlights of the year in the Ladies Calendar is the Spring Meeting. Overall winner and winner of the Bridge Box was Linda Freeman (21) on 36 points.
Freeman’s strength was consistency on the par threes. With her handicap, she was able to reduce them all to nett pars. A feat repeated by Annie Johnston (13), winner of the scratch prize and in third place overall, albeit she did not get shots on any of them. Along with the par, threes Freeman also had a fair sprinkling of pars on the course which allowed her to steal ahead of Penny Allen (36) who also returned a card of 36 points and was able to claim second spot after a countback.
Linda freeman,Winner of the Bridge Box along with ladies captain Fiona Prentice.

Congratulations To Fiona F
iona Prentice, the Ladies’ Captain, earned the bragging rights when she won the Old Mutual Wealth Golf Challenge qualifier at Colchester Golf Club. Prentice’s score of 71 nett from her twenty handicap was some distance ahead of her nearest rivals, and there were two of them, Shelley Persent (19) and Adrienne Strover (17) with Persent getting the nod for second place after the countback.
John Williams, Captain, with Steve and Linda Freeman along with the Ladies' Captain, Fiona Prentice.
Taking fourth place was Maureen Devenish (16) with a nett of 77 ahead of three players all returning 78. The three were Jan Murray (31), Madryn Abnett (16) and Mandy Rix (6) who were placed in that order after the countback. Prentice now moves on to the area finals of this national competition. The ladies’ Bronze team lost out in their match away at Warley Park. With the final score being five matches to two in Warley Park’s favour, it was a scant reward for a team who worked hard. Colchester’s two winners were Nerys James and Linda Freeman. Linda Freeman kept her form going when she along with her husband Steve won the Monday Bank Holiday Mixed Competition with an impressive 39 points. Their score was two points clear of the rest of the field which was headed by the in from pairing of Wendy and Mike Smith, who returned 37 points. In third place after a countback were Maureen Crosbie and Bill Eke on 36 points who had a stronger back nine than Daphne & John Bloomfield.
Shaun’s is in the News S
haun Holmes was balanced precariously at the top of the pile to win Colchester Golf Club’s Essex County Standard Silver competition. Presented to mark the Club’s 75th anniversary in the 80’s by the then board of Essex County Newspapers, this ever popular Boarded Competition was won with a very competitive nett 68. Holmes’s score was just one shot ahead of a group five players all recording nett 69s. There was no doubt his strength was his consistency. Apart from one double bogey on the third, he put together ten pars from his eleven handicap and managed to stay ahead of the zealous, chasing pack. It was the dreaded 18th which put paid to practically all of the five players involved in the countback. Second spot went to Keith Newnham (6); his dropped shot on the last ended a run of six pars. Richard Withnall (4) in third place had two birdies in his round, and he was the only one who pared the last. Alan Hyde who dropped five shots on the back nine including one on the last. Phillip
Shaun Holmes receiving the Essex County Silver from Club Captain John Williams.
French (11) had a great and potentially a winning round, but he had a triple on the last and in a similar way, Stuart Watson (8), just one over par on the front nine and a steady back nine finished with a double bogey to spoil his chances. It’s a cruel game.

lacton-on-Sea Golf Club Juniors Section welcomed Benton Hall Golf Club juniors to the Clacton club for the second of the 2015 season Youth Shield matches. The Clacton juniors were up for this match on a bright sunny day with a stiff breeze to make the golf very interesting. The Clacton team of Katy Yates, Ben Rendell, Josh Bethell, Riley Faulkner and Max Smith all played well against a strong Benton Hall side, however, home advantage and knowledge of Clacton’s excellent greens saw the Clacton juniors win this match by five matches to nil. Clacton-on-Sea Golf Club travelled to Benton Hall Golf Club near Witham to play in the Essex Golf Union’s “L F Wood Trophy,” The Clacton team of Team and Club Captain Steve Parkes, Keith Barnes, Riley Faulkner, Jordan BlanchePrice, Clayton Jeffrey, Glen Wiggans, Josh Bethell,

Jordan Blanche-Price got a fighting half having been 2 down with 2 to go. Adam Stringer raised his game got his half, being 4 down with 4 to play. With the final match in the club house, it was announced that Clacton had lost the match by the tightest of margins 7-8.

Neil Wins The Secretary’s Trophy at Five Lakes
Aussie Cousin Drops in on Woodford Golf Club
I
n breezy summer conditions 50 golfers played in the 2015 Secretary’s Trophy. Played from the white medal tees some golfers found scoring quite difficult. Four players returned 34 stableford points, Malcolm Pitt, Darren Farrup, Doug Wood and Matt Foot, chasing them with 35 points were 4 handicapper Billy Coe who was just outside the main prizes.
T
he link between two Woodford Golf Clubs thousands of miles apart were sealed last month when a member of the Australian version visited the north-east London club for the first time. Sheila Marchant was feted by the club’s officials, although she did not play any golf.
Sheila Marchant (second from right) is greeted by Lady Captain Helen Leggett, club Captain Terry Chisholm and seniors’ Captain Peter Willett in the London clubhouse.
Scoring 36 points and losing out on count back was Eric Howlett (14) taking 3rd place from Jack Garnett (4) on the same score with 20 points on his back 9 holes to claim 2nd slot, however winner and holder of the Secretary’s Trophy for 2015 is Neil Shinwell (10) with 39 points. Birdie twos were won on the par 3’s by club Captain Roger Hyman on the 11th, Billy Coe on the 8th, Trevor Harris and Neil Shinwell on the 4th and Steve Butler on the 16th.
The Australian Woodford GC is situated inland in Queensland and is something of an upstart compared to the venerable club established in Epping Forest 125 years ago. The rural Queensland venture was only begun in 1933 also as a nine-hole affair. In abeyance for four years during World War 2, it moved to a new course in 1947 and was extended to 18 holes in 1970. Long-range links have been established between the two clubs, and annual “test” matches are played between the two; the Australians having won the first two. Both have offered the courtesy of the club and course to any visiting members, and Sheila is the first to claim this privilege in England. No members of the Epping Forest club have yet visited their Australian “cousins.”

roQuip Golf, the world’s leading innovator of lightweight golf weatherwear, has launched Tour-Lite – the lightest rain jacket in its 34-year history – and the first to be developed using a knitted waterproof outer fabric. Engineered to be the lightest packable rain jacket for golf, Tour-Lite weighs only 277 grams and can be packed down to an area of 15cms by 12cms, smaller than the average winter golf mitt. The jacket is constructed from a knitted ultralightweight outer fabric that is supremely soft to wear and stretches four ways delivering the highest levels of comfort and freedom of movement. Russell Brooks, general manager of ProQuip Golf, said: “ProQuip has a history of groundbreaking innovation in golf weatherwear and TourLite is our latest breakthrough. Golfers now demand thinner, softer and lighter clothing with great styling and complete protection against the elements. We believe that Tour-Lite is the perfect all-year round outer layer for golf and will win over the many golfers who are still reluctant to pull on a waterproof jacket when it rains.” Its innovation has earned it the accolade of being the most played weatherwear brand in Ryder Cup history, having supplied both European and American Ryder Cup Teams for over 31-years. Tour-Lite – 50% lighter than Ultralite The new Tour-Lite jacket is 50 per cent lighter than the 2015 version of Ultralite, the company’s longest running and best-selling waterproof range. Innovative features include a handy rear pocket located above the golfer’s lower back for storing a glove, scorecard or accessories. An elasticated waistband and grip strip hem mean the jacket fits snugly at the waist and stays in place for a comfortable athletic fit. The jacket comes with a stylish colour contrast waterproof zip and zip pockets plus adjustable www.proquipgolf.com Velcro cuffs.

Lynx Golf Offers Boom Boom Irons For All Golfers
L
ynx Golf has extended its outstanding Boom Boom irons range for 2015 to offer six different models spanning all abilities of the game. Every iron in the Boom Boom family benefits from Lynx’s superhot Twin Slot Technology and variable face thickness to deliver incredible distance and speed off the clubface. But key changes to the individual club head designs means the technology is available in a complete range of irons that is purpose-built for players in all categories – giving every golfer access to the same game-changing technology, whatever their standard.
Boom Boom Tour (£629 3-PW) With a thin top line, narrower sole, stronger loft and lie, beautiful chrome finish, progressive ¼ inch to ½ inch longer Dynamic Gold steel shafts and Lamkin grips, the new Boom Boom Tour irons are designed firmly with the better player in mind. An unbeatable combination of distance, feel and playability is on offer in a muscle-backed iron that oozes quality. Boom Boom Maraging (£649 steel, £699 graphite 4-PW) Light and thin nickel-rich maraging steel is used in the face of the new Boom Boom Maraging irons. This allows the face to flex to produce a high CoR in an iron – much in the way titanium is used in modern drivers to increase the ball velocity. Weight distribution elsewhere in the head gives improved launch angles and reduced spin rates. Fitted with a Nippon 950GH steel shaft as standard. A better player’s iron, although mid handicappers would also appreciate the distance and feel on offer. Boom Boom Ltd Edition Rose Gold (£549-£599 4-PW) and Standard Black (£499-£549 4-PW) The iron that introduced Lynx’s pivotal Twin Slot Technology is available for 2015 in a special Ltd Edition Rose Gold finish and the original black PVD finish. And a new lefthand set is on offer for the first time. For game improvers, both models deliver a killer combination of distance and forgiveness, although the design also suits those players who are skilled enough to work the ball. True Temper 85 gram steel shafts as standard. Graphite shafts available.
Boom Boom Offset (5-SW £499-£549) A result of Lynx’s commitment to providing mid-high handicap golfers with access to its ultimate game-improvement technology. The Boom Boom Offset irons have the widest sole available in the range, lowering the centre of gravity and assisting the golfer to get the ball airborne. The greatest offset in the range helps to square the face at impact, leading to straighter shots. Lynx’s most forgiving Boom Boom irons to date. Steel and graphite shaft options. Boom Boom Ladies Rose Gold (£514 6-SW) Outstanding technology and superb feel in a beautifully-finished Boom Boom irons set designed specifically for lady players. Available in a 6-SW combination (a separate 5 iron is available) with easy-to-hit graphite shafts. Unveiling the new Lynx Boom Boom iron family, Lynx CEO Steve Elford said: “We knew from our first Boom Boom irons that the Twin Slot Technology delivered outstanding distance. Once that had been firmly established, we wanted to be able to bring that game-changer to all golfers – so we crafted an entire Boom Boom iron family. “Input from Tour golfers like Paul Eales and Laura Davies helped to craft the Tour and Maraging irons. While feedback from higher handicap golfers, who want as much help as technology can bring them, shaped the Boom Boom Offset irons. “The Lynx Boom Boom brand is a strong proposition. By creating a full family of irons, any golfer can match their game to any of the irons on offer and embrace the technology. No-one is excluded. There is a Boom Boom iron for everyone.” Lynx is dedicated to supporting ‘green grass’ Pro shop business, with more than 540 house www.lynxgolf.co.uk accounts in the UK.
