s you know Golf’s Open Championship will no longer be shown live by the BBC as of 2017 after Sky Sports won the rights to broadcast golf's oldest and grandest tournament in a five-year deal. Here is how some of the biggest names in British golf have reacted Lee Westwood: “I cannot believe the Open isn't protected as one of the crown jewels – that is an absolute disgrace. It's very disappointing, even though I can appreciate how much Sky have done for the European Tour, and how much they've done for the game of golf. But look at the viewing figures for Sky compared to the BBC and you have to question it when the number of golfers are dwindling.” Graeme McDowell, on hearing Westwood's comments: “I agree with Westy completely. We are all very aware of the falling numbers and how dangerously on the precipice we are, regarding where the game needs to go in terms of attracting women and children.” Rory McIlroy: “I guess it's just the way it's gone – money talks, you know. It's a shame the Open will not be on terrestrial television, but what can you do about it? I know Sky is expensive and a lot of people can't afford it and it is a shame. It would have been nice if they could have come to some sort of resolution but there it is.” Peter Alliss: “Hand on heart, I can’t not criticise the BBC.They are far and away the R&A’s biggest television client, so why haven’t they said to them: 'You know, we’re struggling against the financial might of Sky but why don’t we also cover some of the other events you run, like the Amateur Championship and the Boys Championship and the Walker Cup?” With less coverage will come even less club members with the loss of revenue to clubs and golf as a whole.

The course is set in 240 acres of beautiful parkland in the Essex countryside. The Club hosted the R and A Regional Qualifier Open for five years.

t’s now March and hopefully as you read this the greens are back on, rough has dried out and your trousers have stopped being covered in mud!

This also means it will soon be the Masters and Easter. Our trade sees this as the start of the golfing season, and we are 100% ready. As I mentioned last month we have bought in more equipment suppliers to go with the other leading brands. If you get a chance to go onto U tube, type in Srixon golf clubs and XXIO golf clubs. There are some fantastic reviews by a couple of English Pros who tested them out at the Grove. This backs up what we already know in the industry that there are some great new clubs out there.

The pictures you see on this page are from our newly laid out store which shows larger areas for many products and a glimpse of our fantastic ladies section. All men’s and ladies clothing is now in stock as wells as over 6 different types of electric trolley, 6 push trolleys and 3 pull. Ladies if you type in the links below you will see the full range of Daily Sports Clothing available and the ‘Surprize’ shop catalogue. We can help you with all of this. http://surprizeshop-brochures.co.uk/2015-SURPRIZESHOP-BROCHURE/ https://flipflashpages.uniflip.com/2/35014/330310/pub/

o tips this month … just an invitation to join me in the sunshine at one of my residential tuition breaks at either the 5-star Penina Resort in Portugal or the 4-star Pravets Resort in Bulgaria. I have been hosting these holiday tuition weeks since 1997 and constantly see amazing results from my guests after spending a week developing new skills and with the time to develop and work on them with yours truly. I am able to give lots of individual attention in this environment, both on the range and on the course during our week together. A large part of the itinerary focuses on short game and this year I am introducing AimPoint green reading into the program, which is amazing to help hole those putts!

These weeks are a lot of fun, especially in the evening recounting the day’s activities while enjoying a glass of wine (or two!) and dinner in the hotel or at a local restaurant. Why not join me in Portugal or Bulgaria Portugal … 11-18 April … or 18-25 April Bulgaria … 10-17 May … or 17-24 May For full details, please visit: wwwgarypikegolf.com For more information or to book, call me on: 07801 428 174 All my holiday tuition weeks are booked via golf tour operator DISTANT LANDINGS. Edna Shows That Age is No Handicap Y

ou’re never too old to get into golf – just ask Edna Bennett who achieved her first handicap at the age of 73. “Age is definitely no barrier to playing golf,” says Edna, who plays at Three Rivers Golf Club in Essex, where she is pictured (left) with golfing friend Julie Williams. “I really enjoy everything about it, being outside, doing something physical, walking and making friends.

“I now play abroad and in the UK and I belong to a lovely, friendly club – as soon as you walk in someone says ‘hi’ – there is so much on offer there.” Edna, a retired PE teacher, has been interested in golf for many years. She lives close to a golf course and her daughter, Sarah, took advantage of this to learn the game, becoming a Ladies European Tour professional for over 20 years,

competing worldwide before concentrating on her coaching. But although Edna encouraged Sarah, introduced school pupils to the game and actually belonged to a golf club for many years, she didn’t get started as a player until she was over 70. “I didn’t have much time and when I first started there were not as many opportunities for new players as there are now, which made it difficult.” said Edna. She decided to postpone her golfing ambitions until she retired, but this plan was abandoned when she hurt her back in a boating accident. “That was the end of golf, I thought.” But her interest was reawakened when Sarah became increasingly involved with her coaching and took on the role of PGA head teaching professional at Three Rivers Golf & Country Club. “Sarah offered a structured beginners’ golf programme, which is very popular with the ladies, which I decided to join. I started a couple of years ago and was awarded my first ever handicap last summer,” said Edna. “Sometimes my back troubles me, but one of the reasons I like Three Rivers Golf Club is there are two courses and my membership includes the Jubilee, the shorter of the two courses, which really suits my level of golf. www.englandgolf.org Follow us on Twitter: www.twitter.com/EnglandGolf

Golfers Vote St Mellion #1

St Mellion International Jack Nicklaus Signature Course (Bob Atkins)

R

eaders of the UK’s best-selling golf magazine Today’s Golfer have voted Cornwall golf destination St Mellion International Resort as #1 in two major categories, in a new survey published in January 2015. In the TG Travel Awards 2015, in which thousands of golfers cast their votes for their favourite golf courses, hotels and resorts across the UK and Continental Europe, St Mellion was the runaway winner in the Best Golf Course and Best Golf Hotel / Resort categories for the West of England. The Jack Nicklaus Signature Course at St Mellion won the ‘Best Golf Course in the West’ category by an overwhelming majority, with 50% of all votes cast – almost four times as many as the next nearest. No other golf course in Europe dominated its regional vote as emphatically as the mighty Nicklaus course at St Mellion, described as “the finest inland course in the south west of England” by the magazine. The award cements its status as one of the UK’s most popular and challenging golf courses, having hosted many European Tour events since its creation by the 18-time Major winner in 1988. And the 80-bedroom, four-star Resort hotel at St Mellion dominated the vote for ‘Best Hotel / Resort in the West’, with over twice as many votes as the next-nearest candidate. “St Mellion delivers on all fronts – both on and off the course” said Today’s Golfer. “The Nicklaus Course is in many ways is the ultimate test of parkland golf, and the comfortable

accommodation with its health club, spa and fine dining offers value for money with its special offers and packages.” On winning the Best Golf Course in the West award, St Mellion’s Golf Manager, David Moon PGA, commented:“This award is testament to Jack Nicklaus’ golf course design skills, and also to our magnificent course management team headed by Mike Bush, our Master Greenkeeper. We are truly delighted to be recognised by Today’s Golfer readers in this way, and our thanks go to all who voted, and also to the magazine. “Each year we successfully entertain hundreds of groups of golfers from clubs across the UK who want to play St Mellion” continued Moon.“We are proud to be the resort of choice for so many other golf clubs, offering a popular weekend away for their members, and proving that you don’t need to get on a plane to play a truly world-class golf course. We have that here, right on your doorstep, with The Nicklaus Signature Course.” Kevin McAlpine, General Manager at St Mellion International Resort, said: “Just over five years ago, our new contemporary Resort hotel opened to great acclaim, and we have been privileged to win many awards since then”. He continued: “Receiving this new award from the readers of the UK’s #1 golf magazine is a source of tremendous pride for the staff here at St Mellion, and we will strive to maintain our exceptionally high standards in 2015, throughout the Resort and its many facilities, in the hope of retaining our title next year.” www.st-mellion.co.uk

A Few Simple Skills You Need To Address To Improve Your Putting?? If you are one of those players who continually struggle with your putting there is good news. There are only 3 skills you have to look at improving. 1. Starting the Ball on the Correct Line

If you are pulling or pushing your putts, then you need to look at improving a few simple parts of your technique... There are many different styles of putting but most good putters look to do a few simple things, which encourage the club face to be square more often at impact.

accurate using your feet to read greens rather your eyes, which are far less reliable. It is quick, effective and can be used on any green... You also have to look at improving these in the correct order. For instance, if you can't start the ball on the correct line consistently at the correct speed reading the greens correctly is very unlikely to happen. So if you are struggling with your putting think which area you are weakest on and work with a PGA Professional to improve this. Even if you have had lessons before it is surprising how few players have had a session on their putting.

2. Distance Control

Most 3 putts happen when the first putt goes too long or is left too short leaving you with too much to do on your second putt.

3. Green Reading This is where Aimpoint can really help, and it continues to become ever more popular, and it will have a big effect on how you read the greens. If you read the greens with your eyes, Aimpoint will demonstrate that you will be far more - 14 -

ALL ABOUT

W EDGE S HAFT S F

or many years wedge shafts were a simple decision, they were either the same as the shafts you had in your irons or a ‘wedge specific’ shaft that came as standard which, in all fairness, did not have a great deal of technology in it. That had been the case for many years until The Royal & Ancient (The R & A) changed the rules on the grooves and the level of abrasion of the face. In the midst of the panic that then followed shaft companies manufactured shafts that could increase spin on wedge shots to help calm the majority of golfers concerns that they will never be able to stop the ball on the green again. This was achieved by changing the profile and wall thickness of the shaft – basically making the tip section a little softer to enhance spin – a HiRev shaft. This works, even if it’s not quite as much as the thirty feet of backspin many golfers thought it would give them! In reality a wedge shaft can add up to 400rpm (revolutions per minute) to a

shot – this does not sound a lot but it is actually quite a significant increase. For the more lofted wedges (58º or 60º) this makes sense, these are the clubs you need maximum spin but for longer wedges (50º & 52º) this never really made sense. Potentially this created gaps between your set wedge and the ‘specialist wedges’. So, this has now made a new category of wedge shafts, for example the KBS 610. This shaft is designed for a stronger, lower trajectory than it’s Hi-Rev counterparts. Ok, so now we have choices for our wedges, a stronger flight in the lower lofts and more spin in the higher lofts – makes perfect sense. So, does it make a difference to a club golfer? I think it does, it can’t make you a great wedge player but it can help. Also, these shafts are no more expensive than any other steel shaft so it’s a no brainer for any new purchase.

Golf Tourism England Website to Boost Visitor Numbers

F

ast-growing membership body Golf Tourism England (GTE) has launched a state-of-the-art website which will act as a touch point for golfers looking for information on booking a memorable golf holiday in one of the world’s oldest and bestestablished golfing destinations.

This announcement comes at an exciting time for GTE, which is also celebrating breaking through the 100-member milestone in its bid to extend its services to golf courses, tourism operators, accommodation providers and leisure attractions involved in golf nationwide. Both of these landmarks represent the early success of the GTE vision, set out by founder and CEO Andrew Cooke, which seeks to unite the stakeholders within golf tourism in England, in order to rival the recent success achieved by neighbouring markets in Scotland and Ireland. Constructed by leading design agency Sears Davies, the site will serve as a resource for all inbound visitors seeking further information about which courses they would like to play, the best places to stay, travel and transportation, top-rated restaurants and off-course entertainment. It will also assist the Golf Tourism England team in servicing new member enquiries, as interest in the body goes from strength-to-strength. “I am delighted to be in the position to launch our brand new website today, and would like to thank each one of our members who have given their support to the GTE strategy since we launched just nine months ago,” said Cooke.

“It serves as affirmation that we are making excellent progress in our bid to set up an association that will have a beneficial effect for all of those involved in the country’s golf tourism industry. “As our membership growth accelerates, this site will serve as a valuable tool in attracting the interest of a worldwide audience, which will be able to find out more information about all of the services they require to build a memorable golf break in England. “I would also like to extend my thanks to Sears Davies, which has been pivotal in the site’s construction.” National tourism board and GTE partner Visit England praised the establishment of the new website as another important achievement which demonstrates the rapid progress being made by GTE. Head of Business Tourism for Visit England, Simon Gidman, said: “The establishment of Golf Tourism England’s new website is a hugely important step in its development as the first point of call for local and international visitors thinking of England for their next golf break and we are delighted to see it come to fruition. “We would also like to praise the foresight of all of those who have joined the Golf Tourism England initiative so far. Their involvement will prove to be crucial in establishing stronger working relationships between all of the stakeholders in English golf tourism, which will be a key element of establishing the country in its rightful place as one of the world’s most popular golfing destinations.” The site is constructed across two individual sections, one which is consumer-facing and designed to appeal to the prospective visitor by promoting all that is great about golf in England while the other provides golfing bodies with information on membership and the associated benefits. www.golftourismengland.com

IMAGINE Y OUR WAY T O

BETTER CHIPPING I

magination plays an important role in golf, especially around the green. If you want to improve your chipping and pitching skills, imagine and understand how the ball will react once it lands. This is a great drill to help you gain awareness of trajectory, speed and distance. 1. With 1 target in mind, place 3 landing spots between you and the hole. 2. From your hitting position throw 3 balls to your target, landing each ball as close to a different landing spot. This will give you a great image of trajectory,

speed and distance when chipping, helping you to select the correct club and shot. Repeat the drill, chipping your balls to the target and think about using different lofts of club. There are many factors which affect the speed and trajectory and distance, such as the path of club and attack angle. If you would like to learn more or gain advise on how you can improve I will be pleased to help.

GREAT GOLF ALL YEAR SINCE 1922 For British golfers who do play through the winter months it can mean driving rain, ankle deep mud, temporary greens, woolly hats, mittens and waterproofs – and worst of all – the ‘Course Closed’ sign. Luckily, the winter golf course hasn’t landed on Thorpeness Golf Club. Here on the Suffolk Coast we enjoy some mighty good meteorology that makes us the perfect winter golf course: • One of the lowest average rainfall rates in the UK • Sandy quick drying soil • A location on a flat low lying coastal plain • Around two hours more sunshine per week than the rest of the UK

The first of her three victories she recorded 26 points, but as the weeks progressed so did her scores. The second week she racked up 29 points and this week she topped them all with 31 points. Albeit the ladies are playing a 14 hole course at the moment this is remarkable achievement. A comparatively new member. Chick, presently playing off 30 handicap, will undoubtedly see her handicap come tumbling down as the year progresses. It is worth noting that for the first two weeks of her run, five handicapper Cassie Cunningham followed her in with second place in both weeks. However, this week she was followed in by Penny Fairs (24) who had a solid 29 points with Cherie Clark (21) taking third spot.

Changing the Face of the Landscape at The Dorset Golf Resort!

W

hile the vast majority of the golfers have been hibernating over the winter, the oncourse team at The Dorset Golf Resort has been busy making key alterations for the 2015 season lying in wait. Many new paths and walkways have been created to take the typical wear the course experiences during the year. More trees have been planted to change the shape of a good few holes with many areas opened up improving the views and scenery around the course. The combination of these improvements really has changed the face of the Landscape at The Dorset Golf Resort for the better.

Another item on top of their list was some extra drainage work. This was done to ensure The Dorset will continue to stay open all year round as it has done for the past 2 years.Amazingly, it hasn’t closed for a single day due to bad weather! The work combined with last year's investment of over £125,000 on a brand-new buggy park & fleet have taken the Resort to a whole new level. The result of this hard work has meant aesthetically the course has never looked or played better at this time of the year. Contact the Resort on 01929 472 244 www.dorsetgolfresort.com

Denise van Outen’s Romantic Valentine’s Weekend in Luxury Lodge at Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa

A

ctress, singer, TV & radio presenter and Strictly Come Dancing star, Denise Van Outen chose to return to her favourite lodge at the family-owned Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa for her Valentine’s weekend with boyfriend Eddie Boxshall and two close friends. Having loved her stay in the lodges when she played in the Ladies European Tour Access Series Pro Am last October, Denise booked to return for two nights for a packed Valentines itinerary at this renowned award-winning golf and spa resort, situated in beautiful Constable Country on the Suffolk/Essex border. Arriving Friday evening, the new guest Eastenders actress and friends enjoyed a sumptuous dinner in the hotel’s Two AA Rosette Lakes Restaurant with family director Tamara

Unwin and husband Stephen. Denise had been interviewed on the red carpet the night before for the Premier of 50 Shades of Grey, but despite 3 hours sleep looked as stunning as ever in an elegant short black dress with sky high heels. After a photoshoot in the lodges on Saturday morning Denise teed off on the Gainsborough course for a relaxed round of golf with her friends. She only took up the game last year and is already looking impressive on the course, showing a natural swing and aptitude. A fun Rasul Mud Therapy Experience after her golf – one of the most popular treatments in the hotel’s Peake Spa – provided Denise and her singer/songwriter friend Cozi Costi with much hilarity. On Valentine’s night Denise and friends enjoyed a special romantic champagne candlelit dinner in the Lakes Restaurant. She was so impressed by the excellent quality of the food that she wanted to thank Executive Head Chef Alan Paton and his talented team personally – and surprised him by walking into the kitchen to order her own dessert and

Denise and Eddie on the balcony of their lodge overlooking the lake and golf fairways. - 38 -

asking him to do a selfie with her. The delighted and startled Chef was very happy to oblige! After dinner Denise and friends joined hotel family owners Tamara Unwin and Susanna Rendall and their guests in the Devora Suite and quickly got into the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party theme for the hotel’s Valentine’s Ball, dancing the night away to popular live band, Juke Box Fury. Denise shared several photos of her fun weekend with her 600,000 or so twitter followers, commenting “Best Valentines weekend of golf, dinner and dancing with Cozicosti, Eddieboxshall and Dunc at Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa”. Her stay was also featured in the Mail on Sunday the next day. She later said “We literally had the best time. We had a really fun day followed by a lovely meal in the evening. We met some great people and it was everything we wanted it to be. The lodges are amazing and we felt like we had our own space and we could really enjoy the weekend.” Hotel director Tamara Unwin said “We were thrilled that Denise and Eddie decided to come to Stoke by Nayland for their first Valentine’s weekend together and that they had the opportunity to enjoy all the facilities on offer here. We believe that the seclusion, luxury and comfort of the lodges together with the excellent dining, golf and spa facilities at the hotel provide a unique winning combination for anyone needing to escape for a romantic fun-filled break, and we are really delighted that they had such a great time”. GOLF ETIQUETTE Some people may be asking, “Why would I need a book about correct conduct? I know how to behave myself.” Although integrity and fairness are an excellent basis, good manners alone are not enough in golf. A certain amount of specific knowledge is essential, especially in the light of the dangers involved in sport. Furthermore, golf also involves social conventions that are not based directly on accepted behaviour patterns. The etiquette is just as important as the rules of play and it ensures that all players can enjoy their game as much as possible. This book does not claim to cover every single issue but it does contain everything you need to know in order to be welcomed at virtually every course in the world. However, please bear in mind that the etiquette may very slightly from club to club. Therefore find out about the Local Rules in advance, follow all the instructions and heed the information on the notice boards. You will then be a welcome guest and playing partner on any course – irrespective of your ability level.

Foods to boost your mood naturally.

Spring is rapidly approaching and the golf clubs are coming out! Work on both physical and mental performance as you make more time to undertake more physical activity, particularly golf. With this in mind aim to consume more foods to enhance your mood, boost serotonin and promote endorphins. Certain foods naturally enhance feel good chemicals and hormones which can further improve both vitality, perspective and golfing performance …

Chocolate

Fish

Salmon/Tuna/Sardines/rainbow trout. Omega 3, fatty acids in fish are associated with lower risk of depression

Saffron

Due to the bioflavonoids and endorphins you will fell less moody – always add a protein (eg brazil nuts, almonds particularly)

Enhances feel good hormones and also aids PMS.

Carbohydrates

Coconut

Slow release varieties e.g. porridge or mesa sunrise or with chopped nuts and fresh fruit (which improve anti-oxidants too)

Suppresses fight or flight, enhances alertness but soothes our response to stress.

Fruit and Vegetables

Tea

Anti-oxidants in fruit and veg. Antioxidants in fruits and vegetables can naturally raise Vitamin C Levels which your body thinks is caffeine!

Theanine boosts both attention and focus.

Here’s to a happier and healthier golfer! - 42 -

Annual General Meeting The Annual General Meeting of the Essex Golf Union was held at Upminster Golf Club on Thursday 5th February and 22 affiliated Clubs were represented, by 58 attendees It was formally announced that after many years of hard work, Philip Kirkham was standing down as Company Secretary/Treasurer and he was presented by John Peters with a small gift as recognition of his years of service. Philip will no longer be on the Board but will still be actively involved in Course Ratings as a co-opted Official. Bryan Sinden (Chingford) was welcomed as the new Company Secretary/Treasurer. Mike Hart (Colchester) was voted on as the new President for the next two years with Roger Walmsley (Upminster) as the new President-Elect. David Edwards (Royal Epping Forest), Stephen Golding (Abridge), John Peters (Woodford) and Tom Whyte (Channels) were re-elected as Directors. Alexander Woodward had to be re-elected as he had changed his Home club from Orsett to Boyce Hill and Andrew Taylor (Boyce Hill) was welcomed as a new Director. The Minutes of the Meeting are distributed to all our Affiliated Clubs.

President’s Address I am very proud to be taking on the role of President of Essex Golf Union for 2015 and 2016. I have been an active member of the County Executive and the Board of Directors for around fifteen years. Much of my experience has been in Grass Roots and Player Development, which I have thoroughly enjoyed. I would like to thank the outgoing President John Peters who has given total commitment during his two years and has led the County players and teams at all ages into considerable success at inter-county and national level. I also wish to thank Phil Kirkham who now stands down after several years of excellent work as Hon Treasurer and Company Secretary. Phil has played a major part in moving us forward as a Limited Company, which leaves us well prepared for the future. I am delighted to welcome Bryan Sinden into this role having shadowed Phil for the past twelve months. My intentions for the next two years are to leave well alone in our core business of top quality competitions and championships although there may be some fine tuning in response to our affiliated clubs occasional requests for change, these coming through good communications and listening to our clubs. We are well aware of the current problems of declining membership that faces golf clubs today. The current annual rate of decline in Essex last year being 2% compared to 5.2% nationally. This trend has continued for several years and shows signs of accelerating, which poses a serious threat to the future of club golf in the UK as we know it.While the County Golf Partnerships (CGP’s) are tasked and funded through England Golf and Sport England to increase participation and club membership in England, this is not succeeding. At the same time

Essex County News www.essexgolfunion.org England Golf and County Unions /Associations along with CGP’s produce strategy plans and action plans, the real solution lies with clubs making changes but not devaluing their offer. From my observations reading Essex Golfer, it is clear that Essex Clubs are taking action and in many cases having considerable success in recruiting new members, but are there new golfers among them? or are they current members following the best deals. As President of the Essex Golf Union I would like to support our affiliated clubs in working together to grow golf participation and club membership in our county. My starting point in this is that we plan to hold a conference on the 18 November 2015 the title being “Growing Golf In Essex” at this event speakers will include David Joy CEO of England Golf and a the CEO of a National Bank as keynote speakers. Clubs with a story to tell will be invited to present at the conference. We also hope to include a speaker representing another sport currently enjoying increasing national participation. From this conference I hope that we as county and clubs can develop ideas together. So my last message is watch this space and register your interest in attending through our Essex Golf Union website and I look forward to meeting many of you through the next two years of enjoyable golf events. For up-to-date County golf news and forthcoming fixtures please visit the EGU website, find us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter.

Aldeburgh Pro-Event A rare still day greeted the PGA in Essex on our visit to the delightful but difficult Aldeburgh course which has a very stiff par of 68 with no par fives. Experienced Sean Carter from Epping Golf Club showed the way by shooting level par which was good enough to take the spoils by one shot from comparative youngster Chris Goddard of Romford Golf Club. Third place

on two-over was shared by Mark Baker from Colchester Golf Club and Robbie Coles from Maylands. Carter put his win down to a complete overhaul of his game and many hours of practice with new equipment. Second place for Chris Goddard was enough to take him to the top of the Order of Merit ahead of four others sharing second place.

Orsett Betterball The fastest greens we have encountered all year combined with a strong wind made conditions at Orsett Golf Club quite tricky. Despite this the scores were very respectable and were headed by the professional/amateur partnership of Mark Stokes from Rayleigh Golf Range and his partner David Carne who came home with 43 stableford points. In the all professional category the ‘hot’ partnership of Jason Levermore from Channels Golf Club and Mark Davis from Thorndon Park lived up to their pre-tournament favouritism by combining to produce 42 points. This was good enough to win by one point from Andy Shakespear of The Warren Golf Club and Marc Dodd from Totally Golf. The all amateur category was won by the veteran partnership of Ken Richardson and Colin Reynolds from Thorndon Park. Mark Davis Jason Levermore

Gog Magog Pro-Am Despite an awful weather forecast, clear skies and light winds greeted the field for the visit to Gog Magog this year. The player to take full advantage of the conditions was Robbie Coles from Maylands Golf Club who recorded seven birdies and no dropped shots in a stunning 63.This was good enough to win by four shots from James Webber of Three Rivers Golf and Country Club and Paul Grotier from Essex Golf and Country Club. In fourth place with a very creditable 68 was Ed Glease from Frinton Golf Club. The Pro-Am was won by the team from Essex Golf and Country Club with professional Paul Grotier and amateurs Don Cutmore and Mick Cousins on countback from the team with James Webber both teams coming in with 82 stableford points. The result moves James Webber and Robbie Coles jointly to the lead in the PGA in Essex 2015 Order of Merit.

Upcoming Events On Tuesday March 3rd we will be visiting Burnham on Crouch Golf Club for the first time in many years and have an excellent field of nearly 100 players. An interesting course which is always in first class condition and can be very tricky if the wind blows off the Crouch estuary. The following week we will be paying our annual

HOW IS YOUR

? E C N A BAL

U

nfortunately, many of us do not realize the importance our balance plays during a round of golf. As a Coach, it is apparent by the swing how effective the player's balance is upon completion of the follow through. A well “balanced posture and in swing” is a key to assist the body to produce maximum power producing a controlled sequence of movements. An average club golfer, 6 iron club head speed is in the region of 55 mph- 78 mph if our balance is not correctly positioned at address we will have to make compensations during the swing causing inconsistencies and off centred strikes. Balance from a medical perspective can often

deteriorate through our natural ageing process but can be affected by a range of neurological disorders or other conditions. We can assist and manage our balance with some simplistic exercises to aid the neurological connections between our brain, ears and eyes, which can be carried out as a stand-alone programme or part of an exercise action plan. Set up position: It is favourable to have the weight positioned on the balls of our feet for a standard flat lie. This distribution alters constantly during a round of golf to accommodate awkward and sloping lies.

- 48 -

Many of us do not have an awareness of our weight distribution so why not try this short drill to assist with the feeling. 1. Set up and shift the majority of your weight towards your toe’s Fig 1.

“Neutral” set up Fig 3.

3. Slowly feel the weight move towards the centre of both of your feet. You should feel steady and “rock” solid and in a balanced position Fig 3.

Weight on toe's Fig 1.

2. From this position rock backwards gently without falling over! Moving your weight to your heel’s Fig 2.

4. You should feel in a sturdy solid position with approximately 50% of weight equally distributed between each foot for an iron shot. This starting position will help hugely to make a controlled balanced back swing where the weight will start to shift towards the right foot which facilitates the downswing movement. A good swing thought or “feel” is to try to maintain constant pressure into the ground during the swing.

Billericay Golfers Take Prestigious National Pairs Title in Morocco

Steve Adkins and Robert Turner.

A

n amateur golfing duo from Billericay has won the prestigious national senior pairs title at the grand final of the Morocco Matchplay, powered by HowDidiDo. Two-handicapper Steve Adkins and Robert Turner, a five-handicapper, who are club-mates at Stock Brook Manor GC – played five rounds of matchplay golf in Morocco to secure the title, winning three and halving the other two. A delighted Adkins, 52, said: “It’s been a fantastic week. To go out at this time of year to play golf in this weather on great courses, it’s been tremendous. We improved as the week went on and today, on the Red Course, was our best round. It’s superb here; it’s much greener than I imagined. The weather has been fantastic for this time of year and they’re really friendly people, very hospitable. “My caddy was a six-handicapper himself. He got everything right; always gave me the correct club for the shot – and I lost my best Carnoustie hat to him too, as he asked for it,” he laughed. Turner, 58, added: “At £25 entry fee it’s certainly money well spent, fantastic value. And we'll be back

competing this year trying to retain the title. It'll be good watching the course when it’s on the European Tour next year. We can remember the holes and watch as they drive it 100 yards past where we landed ... off the back tees! “The caddies were absolutely brilliant. How they read the lines on these greens I’ve no idea. We trusted them and they got us over the line.”

Chelmsford Golfer Just Loses Out in Quest for Prestigious Title

A

n amateur Chelmsford golfer just missed out, with his partner, in an attempt to win a prestigious national pairs title at the grand final of the 2014 Morocco Matchplay, powered by HowDidiDo. Ross Ranson, 53, an 11-handicapper who plays his golf at Crondon Park GC, was joined by his friend Keith Finlay, from Surrey, as they played five

rounds of matchplay golf in Morocco, winning two matches to finish third – behind winners Robert Turner and Steve Adkins from Billericay – in the grand final of the senior pairs. Yet, despite not securing the title, the duo thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. Ranson said: “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the week. The first course was a good course to open on and these two courses (at Royal Dar Essalam) are fabulous – and playing them twice is quite nice. I've

really enjoyed it. The weather’s been great: cool when it starts and then gets quite nice and warm. It’s a lot better than being at home.” And Finlay added: “There were some good courses and it’s great to play a course which is going back on to the European Tour. I think you definitely consider Morocco as a golf destination along with the other winter venues. Trying out new things is all part of being a golfer.”

Ross Ranson and Keith Finlay.

hey all enjoyed complimentary return flights to Morocco; six-nights’ accommodation at the stunning, five-star L’Amphitrite Palace hotel, in Skhirat; and five rounds of golf, at both the prestigious Royal Golf Dar Essalam, which hosted the last Moroccan Open in 2001 and returns to the Tour in 2016, and the Tony Jacklin Casablanca. The trip to the grand final was reward for their efforts in battling through local rounds and a regional final during 2014, in a competition open to any golfer who is a member of an affiliated club with an officially recognised handicap. They were just two of 30 golfers from across the UK who qualified for the grand final, which featured four competitions: singles, pairs, mixed pairs and senior pairs, for those aged 50 or more. HowDidiDo's database now holds in excess of 21 million rounds of golf along with the handicaps, results and scores of more than 1,300,000 UK golf club members. It is now arguably the largest and most up-to-date database of golfers in Europe. What's more, the brand is also the driving force behind two of the best supported amateur golf events in the UK: the annual Titleist Order of Merit - the largest golf event of its kind in the country – and the Morocco Matchplay (formerly the HowDidiDo National Matchplay Championship). www.howdidido.com | www.moroccomatchplay.co.uk - 51 -

Rhapsody Women’s Fairway Woods The high-MOI 3-, 5-, and 7-woods launch the ball easily from the tee or the turf for greater distance and accuracy. Heel weighting promotes rotation in the 17-4 stainless steel head to square the face at impact for longer, straighter results. A lighter overall system mass helps generate clubhead speed, and a thin face produces faster ball velocity for added distance.Turbulators on the crown help frame the ball at address to aid in aiming and aligning the clubface to inspire confidence.

PING Unveils New Rhapsody Family for Ladies 2015

G

ame-changing innovation and expanded custom-fitting opportunities provided the inspiration for PING’s newest ladies line. The Rhapsody women’s products showcase PING’s primary point of difference: its ability to make measurable performance gains without sacrificing any important attributes. Rhapsody clubs for women are engineered for slower swing speeds. Beginning today, the product line can be pre-ordered at PING-authorised golf shops around the world. “Based on our studies of women’s swing dynamics, we engineered the Rhapsody Series with a lighter overall system mass, higher lofts and optimised lengths,” John Solheim said. “As a result, women will have an easier time getting the ball airborne and hitting it straight, and that’s going to improve performance and inspire confidence.”

Rhapsody Women’s Hybrid/Iron Set This blended set combines easy-to-hit hybrids and high-launching, forgiving perimeter-weighted irons to optimise distance control and gapping. The stainless steel irons and hybrids offer lighter overall system mass for generating clubhead speed, ball velocity and distance, especially from slower swing speeds. In the irons, an elastomer cavity badge ensures a soft yet solid feel. Slightly longer shafts and stronger lofts optimise trajectory, distance, and gapping. In the hybrids, the face is thin to generate faster ball speeds for greater distance. A low-back centre of gravity promotes higher launch and elevates the MOI for increased forgiveness and accuracy. Rhapsody Women’s Putters The Rhapsody putters feature the nextgeneration of True-Roll Technology grooves that vary in width and depth for unmatched distance control and predictable ball speeds, even when the putt is struck toward the heel or toe. Perimeter weighting in the 17-4 stainless steel heads and a well-balanced geometry have made the B60, Anser 2 and Craz-E models among the most successful, enduring designs in PING’s history. www.ping.com

Rhapsody Women’s Driver To generate longer drives, the Rhapsody adjustable driver offers a lighter total system mass and a pearl-colored 460cc head that is centrifugally cast, which allowed us to optimise the CG and increase the MOI for greater accuracy. The thin face helps maximise ball speed for adding distance. Turbulators in the crown of the Ti 8-1-1 head reduce aerodynamic drag, leading to increased clubhead speed and ball velocity. Turbulators also help frame the ball at address for improved alignment. Heel weighting promotes head rotation to square the face for consistently solid impact. - 54 -

New e-Series Balls Launched by Bridgestone Golf

F

B

ridgestone Golf, the No. 1 ball-fitting brand, is introducing a brand new range of e-Series balls that combine its previous dimple technology with a revolutionary WEB pattern to deliver a more penetrating flight and extra distance. The distinctive WEB Dimple Technology is the predominant feature on the new balls, with 226 unique dimples to maximise surface coverage combining with 110 Dual Dimples for consistent ball flight. The new dimple configuration in the latest e-5, e-6 and e-7 balls produces 10% more surface coverage than previous models to retain ball speed for a sustained period after launch. It also helps to create an impressive flight trajectory at the ball’s highest speed mark and maintain lift as its velocity declines. Golfers looking for higher flight trajectory are encouraged to use the e-5 ball, while the e-6 is designed to provide straighter flight and the e-7 a more penetrating ball flight. The new version of the top-selling e-6 threepiece ball is the softest Multi-layer golf ball on the market, with a soft core for lower spin and straighter flight. Featuring a softer suryln cover, the e-6 is set to push the distance barriers for golfers looking to eradicate hooks and slices from their game. The popular e-6 ball is available in white, orange and optic yellow. The latest e-5 two-piece model has a faster spin rate for higher flight, while the e-7 ball offers explosive pace and a piercing flight with a speedenhancing three-piece construction. www.bridgestonegolf.co.uk

ootJoy introduces HYPERFLEX™, the most distinctive footwear category in its history. Featuring innovative materials, like the new FlexGrid™ exoskeleton, HYPERFLEX delivers lightweight support and cushioning, enabling golfers to play at their highest level. The most striking feature of the new HYPERFLEX golf shoe is the upper. Most athletic shoes are constructed with soft, mesh upper materials that are ideal for running and activities that don’t require a great deal of lateral movement. However, for FJ’s research & development team, the key was to keep those comfort qualities in place but also deliver the support, stability and waterproof characteristics required for golf. Through extensive testing, this balance was achieved utilising a material never before used in golf shoes, called FlexGrid. The FlexGrid exoskeleton is strong enough to keep the foot from rolling laterally during the golf swing but also conforms to the foot and allows it to flex. The base layer that supports the exoskeleton consists of a tight-knit, lightweight, soft, flexible, waterproof mesh, which allows for maximum comfort, breathability, flexibility and airflow. The combined layers produce a golf shoe that wraps the foot in the comfort you expect from an athletic shoe with the additional support of a high-performance golf shoe. “Our designers have carried out research in civil engineering and construction to create the distinguishing aesthetics of HYPERFLEX which are also fundamental to its performance,” said Doug Robinson, FootJoy Vice President of Design and Development Worldwide. “Every area of this shoe has been carefully considered, incorporating exceptional craftsmanship and innovative componentry to create an incredibly flexible and lightweight, yet stable, platform from which to swing.” Availability: March 2015 www.footjoy.com

Clarke Ryder Cup Appointment to Deliver Golf Tourism Boost to Ireland

T

ourism Ireland has welcomed the appointment of Darren Clarke as Europe’s new Ryder Cup captain for 2016 and believes the decision will greatly enhance its continued ability to promote Ireland as a world-class golf destination. Clarke, one of Tourism Ireland’s golf ambassadors alongside world number one Rory McIlroy, Graeme McDowell, Padraig Harrington and Paul McGinley, was confirmed in the role by the European Tour ystdy/Wed Feb 18 to lead Europe’s Ryder Cup defence at Hazeltine National in Minnesota, USA, from September 30 to October 2, 2016. The 46-year-old will be the second Irishman in succession to captain Europe after McGinley led the continent to its eighth victory in 10 meetings against America last September, and Niall Gibbons, CEO of Tourism Ireland, believes his appointment can provide an additional boost to golf tourism across the island. Gibbons said: “Congratulations to Darren Clarke on being named Europe’s new Ryder Cup captain. This is wonderful news indeed – with Darren following in the footsteps of one of our other great golf ambassadors, Paul McGinley. “This honour reminds golfers everywhere that the island of Ireland truly is the ‘Home of Champions’ – presenting Tourism Ireland with an invaluable opportunity to highlight the island of Ireland as a world-class golf destination to prospective golf holidaymakers around the world. We wish Darren every success as Europe’s new Ryder Cup captain.” Latest figures show that the economic impact of golf tourism in Ireland has risen to £33million, up from £27million, and promoting Ireland as a leading global golf destination will be a major focus for Tourism Ireland in Britain and other key worldwide markets in 2015. The organisation has launched an extensive programme of promotions to help deliver its aim this year, and at the heart of the promotional activity will be the 2015 Irish Open, which will take place at Royal County Down from May 2831.

It will be the first time in 75 years that the event has been played at the historic links venue in Newcastle, Co. Down, and the tournament is set to attract global attention, with home favourite McIlroy set to lead a star-studded field of worldclass stars. Golf is the world’s largest sports-related travel market and Tourism Ireland is committed to promoting the message that a golfing holiday on the island is about much more than a round of 18 holes – with the combination of Ireland’s worldclass golf product and its unique brand of hospitality playing a key role in attracting golfers worldwide to visit. With some of the most famous venues anywhere in the world, Ireland offers golfers the complete package with top championship courses, stunning scenery, fascinating history and some of the best craic around. The Algarve’s Enduring Popularity Drives 50,000 Round Growth in 2014

T

he Algarve, Europe's leading golf destination, is gearing up for a busy 2015 after reporting an increase of more than 50,000 rounds played on its famous courses last year. Golf was born on the Algarve in 1966 and, 49 years later, its appeal burns brighter than ever, with 41 golf courses and an unrivalled infrastructure of hotels, resorts and off-course attractions. Blessed with a superb year-round climate and mild temperatures, the Algarve's other success factors continue to be: strong flight connections to Faro airport from across Europe, the relaxed and friendly nature of its people, and great value for money. A spokesperson for the Associação Turismo do Algarve (ATA) said: “We are delighted that so many more visitors enjoyed golf in the Algarve last

year and had the opportunity to experience our distinct offering. “We continue to work hard with our golf tourism industry to deliver exceptional levels of service to our guests, and to send them home with wonderful memories.” There is further good news for UK golfers this season with their budgets set to stretch even further, thanks to the British Pound strengthening more than 10 per cent against the Euro in the past 12 months. The Algarve’s sun-drenched climate boasts more than 300 days of sunshine per year, extending the golf season over several months and bringing players from all over the world to the Algarve. www.visitgolfalgarve.com
