The Simple Way To Practice I f you are serious about improving your game, all you need to do is to get a little note book. Whenever you practice have a lesson or change anything in your swing write it all down in your notebook. Make sure the notebook will fit into your back pocket. Make some notes after every round of golf or anything you read in a magazine or on television. Write down thoughts and ambitions for the season ahead after a while your notebook will contain invaluable in formation for improving your game. You will find that most professional golfers or caddies write down notes after each session. A friend of mine was playing in a four ball two weeks ago when an argument broke out about one of the rules of golf as there was money to be won for the winner of the four ball.Once they were back in the club house, one of the group said should there be a requirement of each golf club for members to attend and pass a rules seminar, sounds a good idea.

W
ith Jordan Spieth, Justin Rose and Phil Mickleson making up the top 3 in the Masters there are happy faces at Underarmour, Adidas, Callaway, Titleist and Taylormade. While most of us would like a British or European winner Jordan Spieth played some great golf and seems to be a really nice guy.
And for all of you we have that same equipment, clothing and shoes in stock. We are continuing with our ‘try before you buy’ policy on woods and utilities and judging by the demand this is something you like. Our top sellers on clothing so far this year are: Adidas, Underarmour and Daily Sports for the ladies. While Callaway shoes seem to be going down very well. This month in store sees the launch of the Ping G25 offer, a Callaway range of keenly priced woods and irons and the introduction of Oakley (men’s clothing and sun glasses). However once again with a vastly bigger selection of trolleys, and GPS devices we have seen a massive increase in sales. Let our staff run you through all the merits of these and I’m sure there is one to suit your needs. Three offers on the other page which include free products with a number of items. These only run until the end of May.

If you look at the Statistics of how many putts are made on the tour from different distances you could be surprised.
From 3 foot and inMake percentage is 100% from 6 foot - 80% from 10 feet - 20% from 20 feet - 11% from 40 feet - 3% From PGATour.com
What can we learn? Have some realistic expectations – Even the top tour pros aren’t making a lot of long putts so you shouldn’t put too much pressure on yourself or be too dissappointed if you miss. Chipping and getting your first putt inside 3 feet is the key to getting up and down more and having less 3 putts – The more your lag putting and chip shots get inside 3 feet the greater the chance you have of 2 putting and getting up and down. - 10 -
Short Game & Putting Schools.

Defibrillators For The Community and Golf
A
EDdonate have teamed up with Crowdfunder.co.uk and SADS UK to offer fundraising activities to enable communities to obtain an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) through Community Heartsafe Projects. Jamie Richards.
This has been run successfully on a number of projects throughout the UK with fundraising activities such as school bag packs, car washes, car boot sales and sponsored sports events etc. The communities have come together to raise enough funds for the Defibrillator to be placed. AEDdonate coordinated all of this providing the fundraising packs, contacting local councils, MP’s,
getting donations from local businesses and getting involvement from local community groups to ask for help and support for the project. Most importantly it creates mass PR and Social Media awareness so that donations can be given on line through Crowdfunder. Schools, sports centres, golf clubs, social clubs, pubs, restaurants, villages, high streets basically anywhere that the public use as they should have access to an AED. Managing Director, Jamie Richards said “I am so pleased that we can now offer this throughout the UK due to our unique relationship with SADS UK and Crowdfunder.co.uk. 100,000 people die each year from Sudden Cardiac Arrest, 90% of those patients could of have been saved if they had quick access to an AED. Being a Community First Responder outside of work I see what devastation Cardiac Arrest causes unfortunately on a too frequent basis.” We are now able to accept enquiries for new community projects across the UK. THE SECRET BEHIND JORDAN SPEITH’S MASTERS VICTORY! W
hen you watched this year’s Masters I think we saw the emergence of an amazing golfer in Jordan Speith and at the age of 21 I believe a player who is going to play his role in this new era within our wonderful game of golf. In my last article for April’s edition of Essex Golfer Magazine I said that who normally win’s The Masters is great at Putting and normally has a great short game. Well we were not disappointed. Jordan proved that he had the game but more importantly holed lot’s of crucial putts. Did you notice or was it pointed out to you how he putted? Well I am going to explain his extraordinary way of holing short putts! Why is Jordan Speith’s Short Putting unique? When we watched Jordan Speith set-up and then just before he took his putting stroke he then looked at the hole. Most of the time he holed the putt and probably you were thinking ‘how on earth is he doing that’. Well yes it’s unique but is it unique? When you watch most ball sports or throwing sports is the competitor looking at the ball or their action? The answer is mostly no! So Jordan is looking at his target which happens in most other sports rather than watching his action. What he is doing is targeting his target and allowing his eyes to guide his hands that are holding the putter to put the ball into the hole.
concentration with the putter that there is no flow in the stroke and putts are mis-struck and putts are still missed. Next time you go onto the putting green to practice say from within 10ft of the hole, look at it and target your eyes and then do your putting stroke without looking at the ball. You might just surprise yourself! Can I help you to improve your putting? If you are struggling with your putting and would like to understand a total strategy to putting then either come and see me personally or for group lessons at The Essex G&CC or at Epping GC. I can help you to understand what you need to about putting and rather than thinking I will get you doing. A great way to explain this would be; How do you drive your car? You just drive the car, you don’t think about the actions you are doing. This is what Jordan is doing in his own way, but there is a way for each individual.
Could this style of Putting suit you? I have been using this as a drill in my lessons for sometime now and have got some people actually doing this style to help improve their putting. Most people get caught up in their putting strokes thinking and believing that if they improve their stroke they will putt better. Their minds are so where the ball is and not where they want the ball to be after the putt. This leads to so much

Stokes and Adams in Spring Classic Triumph
Paul Searle (c), managing director of Searles Leisure Group, prepares to hand over the spoils to Mark Stokes (l) and Dom Adams (r) after their victory in the PGA Spring Classic.
M
ark Stokes (Rayleigh Golf Range) and ninehandicap partner Dom Adams surged to a comfortable success in the Searles PGA Spring Classic in Norfolk. The duo recorded a tally of 80 Stableford points – three more than Andrew George (Ely City) and his club captain Mick Munnelly, who put up a stout defence of the title they landed a year ago. The opening round, staged on the superb Hunstanton links, saw Stokes and Adams play some fine foursomes golf to notch up 38 points. That was good enough to bag a slender lead going into the second day at King’s Lynn where their excellent form continued. Stokes and his partner from Burnham-onCrouch Golf Club kept their foot on the gas pedal, recording 42 points under better-ball rules. George and Munnelly, a point behind at the halfway stage, could never quite get on terms despite some good play of their own. And not even a gross birdie from 14handicapper Munnelly at the last was able to make any difference to the final outcome. Stokes said: “We’ve had a great time. Every event I enter I want to win, so this is brilliant – it’s why I play golf.” He pinpointed a red-hot scoring spree midway
between the 11th and 15th holes at Hunstanton as the telling phase of the two days. Stokes added: “We were going backwards and then had three gross birdies and a net birdie. It made a big difference and changed it all around. It was teamwork.” James Taverner (Hendon) and Oliver Searle finished third on count-back with 75 points. On day two they compiled 44 points, the best betterball tally. Also on 75 points were Neil Mitchell (Bury Golf Range) and Alex Bridges, along with Murray White (Penfold Park) and Justin Saunders. Searles PGA in England (East) Spring Classic: (First day Stableford foursomes at Hunstanton, second day better ball at King’s Lynn), leading scores: 80: M Stokes (Rayleigh Golf Range) and amateur D Adams 38 42. 77: A George (Ely City) and amateur M Munnelly 37 40. 75: J Taverner (Hendon) and O Searle 31 44; N Mitchell (Bury Golf Range) and A Bridges 33 42; M White (Penfold Park) and J Saunders 36 39. 74: R Pudney (Mundesley) and D Crosby 34 40; M Spooner (Glen Lodge) and T Gurney-Read 34 40; J Jankowski (Essendon) and D Edwards 35 39. 73: D Wood (Orsett) and C Petitt 35 38; L Bowers (Lakeside Lodge) and C Clarricoates 36 37; A Trett (Bury Golf Range) and C Reeve 37 36.

Suffolk Golf Club Uncovers Curious Connection to The Masters Suffolk Golf Pro Frank Hill discovers bizarre link between Augusta National Golf Club, home of The Masters, and Thorpeness
A
Suffolk Golf Club has uncovered a curious connection it shares with The Masters Tournament – golf’s season opening Major Championship. Thorpeness Golf Club and Hotel Head Professional Frank Hill was having a coffee and reading a magazine article about Augusta National Golf Club when he discovered the unusual link with the Suffolk holiday village where he’s worked for 19 years. “I was looking at a picture of the green jackets that Masters Champions wear with the famous badge and map of Georgia state with the golf flag showing Augusta’s location. I was in our hotel library at the time where there is a map of Suffolk and I noticed that Georgia, U.S.A and Suffolk are virtually identical in shape. When I looked more closely I saw that both Augusta and Thorpeness are in virtually the same place on the respective maps. I had to look twice but when put side by side it’s uncanny,” said Frank.
Hill is the current Captain of the Suffolk PGA (Professional Golfer’s Association) and has played in The Open Championship five times but had never ever made the connection before. The 79th Masters tournament got underway on April 9th. “The Masters is possibly the best known tournament in the entire sport, for golfers and nongolfers, and it’s the one that marks the unofficial start of the golfing year. It’s nice to have discovered this odd quirk of geography we share with one of golf’s most famous venues.
More than just maps in common The connections don’t stop at location either. Both Thorpeness and Augusta National were designed by legendary Scottish golf course designers, Augusta by Dr. Alister Mackenzie and Thorpeness by five-time Open Champion James Braid. Both golf clubs also have rooms in their clubhouse for golfers to stay over, Augusta has the ‘Crow’s Nest’ rooms in its attic while Thorpeness has 36-rooms, including its ‘Braid Lodge.’ Hotel manager Ajay Anthony, said: “Thorpeness is a quirky place, with a House in the Clouds and a boating lake that inspired the story of Peter Pan. Suffolk is sometimes called the ‘Curious County’ and so this strange coincidence didn’t come as too much of a Thorpeness Golf Club Head Professional Frank Hill, photographed shock.” For more about golf at Thorpeness, visit: in the library with the map of Suffolk and the golf magazine that triggered his discovery. www.thorpeness.co.uk - 20 -

BUNKER SHOTS MADE SIMPLE I
n Picture 1, you can see the shot in question, I am looking towards the face of the bunker, which has a reasonably high lip, the flag is just beyond. The good news as in this case is that the ball is settled on an up-slope, this will automatically help my trajectory. In Picture 2, the most important point is to set up leaning with the slope, trying to get your feet knees and shoulders level. You may feel a little more
weight than usual on your back foot. All that remains to do from, here is stay balanced and impact the sand two inches before the ball, and it will pop out every time. I am just in the middle of my tuition breaks at Penina and Pravets this spring, and bunker play and in particular hitting the bunker shot up over a high lip seems to be a very common problem.

Masters Debut for GolfingGirl A
young girl called Ivy started golf just 4 years ago and has found a game she loves. Ivy has progressed through GolfingGirl juniors structured coaching programme launched by Sarah Bennett the Essex Girls County Coach and England U18 Regional Coach 5 years ago.
Sarah initiated and arranged the first ever Essex Tour experience which consisted of players who have also progressed through her GolfingGirl group 3 years ago all of who are now involved within the County coaching squad. As a former Ladies European Tour player and committee member she arranged the personalised trip for her GolfingGirl group who were each presented with a signed poster from the players and a cap but also the rare opportunity to hold and be photographed with the Solheim Cup. It was this team cohesion which Sarah works hard on developing during her squad coaching and this approach has certainly assisted the development of the players and the Essex squads. Ivy had an amazing time and many were talking about the day weeks after the event, this really prompted Ivy to continue to attend Sarah’s events with her target to obtain her first handicap this Summer. “I am delighted Ivy had such a wonderful time in the Masters competition and she continues to play the game for all the right reasons which is my main objective with any youngster whom I coach.” Asked why Ivy likes golf she said “I love playing golf, playing in the competitions and the fun when the shot flies in the air, I also love my lessons with my coach – Sarah.”
Ivy and Sarah.
This on-going golf development programme attracts both young girls and ladies new to the game and has been the first most successful and established initiative in Essex run and delivered solely by a PGA Professional Sarah has encouraged Ivy during all stages of her golfing development accompanying her to the Regional National Skills Finals last year after she won the Essex County section within her age group up to 8 years of age. Another one of Sarah’s GolfingGirls also qualified in the same event in the higher age category and is now involved within the Essex County squads which Sarah is the Head Coach. Sarah suggested Ivy played in her first ever local event which to Ivy’s delight she won the girls age group 9-10 years also winning the chipping competition for both the boys and girls.
“I was touched when Ivy presented me with beautiful bouquet of flowers, as long as my players are smiling on and off the course, then I am happy.”

Golf – First things first, get fit for golf! As the dreary winter months are now behind us and the summer days are rapidly approaching, this is an opportunity to get fit. An average man can burn up to 1436 calories using a push or pull cart and 1442 calories if the clubs are carried over the shoulder.
2.
Cycling – A person can burn up to 1000 calories per hour by simply cycling! In numbers – an hour of cycling at maximum intensity will help a woman of average weight (which is about 160 pounds) burn about 850 and the numbers are even higher for men (about 950)!
3.
Skipping – Skipping is more than a game for children! In fact, it also happens to be one of the exercises that burn the most calories and will definitely help you get rid of those pesky 5 pounds just in time for the bikini season! An hour of this activity can help men burn up to 850 calories while women can hope to burn up to 750.
4.
Swimming – Don’t really enjoy sweating? No problem! With about 840 calories per hour for men and 720 for women, swimming deserves a strong third place on the list of exercises that burn the most calories.
5.
Cross Trainer Machine – Way more interesting than a treadmill, an cross trainer can help you burn up to 600 calories per hour and a whopping 11% more if you don’t mind going backward instead of just pushing forward. Not bad at all! Grab those handles and let your arms share the work in order to exercise more muscle groups and get the most out of it.
6.
Running – An activity which has been proven to burn more calories at the time movement is exerted than any other form of exercise. It is also one of the best to reduce stress and depression. You can burn around 600 calories per hour running, and even jogging is around 550 for a 130 pound woman.
Happy Training! - 26 -

Sir Nick Faldo to Play His Last Open at St Andrews G
reat Britain’s greatest golfer of the modern era, Sir Nick Faldo, will play in his last Open at St Andrews this summer on the 25th anniversary of his victory at the home of golf.
The six-time Major Champion plans to make a farewell on the famous Swilcan Bridge after a long and hugely successful career which saw him become Champion Golfer of the Year at St Andrews in 1990 and at Muirfield in 1987 and 1992. He also achieved ten top ten finishes in The Open between 1978 and 2003. The Englishman, who will celebrate his 58th birthday during The Open, will join five-time Open
Champion Tom Watson in making a final appearance in the Championship in July. Sir Nick said, “The Open and St Andrews will forever hold a significant place in my heart. My fondest moments on my journey with this great sport are woven with pictures and emotions in this setting. It all means a huge amount to me. “I look forward to celebrating all that golf has given me as I cross that storied bridge and the wonderful memories I share with many people. I am grateful for it all and grateful to golf.” In a glittering career, Faldo won the Masters Tournament on three occasions. He played in 11 European Ryder Cup teams, becoming the leading points-scorer in the competition’s history, before captaining the team in 2008. He was runner-up in both the US Open and the USPGA Championship. In addition to his Major wins, Faldo won 24 European Tour events and led the money list in 1983 and 1992. He also won three events on the PGA Tour. The 144th Open will be played at St Andrews from 12-19 July. www.theopen.com
Penny, 70, Achieves Hole-in-One After 15 Year Hiatus A
hole-in-one may seem as unachievable as it is elusive but 70-year-old Penny Smith from Essex proved otherwise after achieving her first hole-in-one after a 15-year break from golf. The 33-handicapper from Southminster scored her maiden ace on the 88-yard, par-three 15th at Three Rivers GC and she was rewarded with membership of the exclusive BOSS Watches H1Club and a specially-commissioned, commemorative timepiece. Smith, a keen sailor and retired professional skipper, said: “After being away from golf for 15 years having lived in Turkey, I took up the game again when I passed my 70th birthday last October – I’d forgotten how frustrating it was. “My tee shots and fairway shots were good but my putting was terrible. The only way to score points was from off the green. I hit an eight-iron straight towards the pin and, though I couldn’t see the bottom of the flag, I knew it was close. “I let out a whoop when I realised I couldn’t see my ball on the green because it was hiding in the hole. I don't really have a secret to scoring a hole-
in-one: just enjoy life, hit the ball and think of England.” www.bosswatches.co.uk

Theresa Leads 10 Qualifiers into National Final E
ssex golfer Theresa Fisher swept through to the England Golf women’s Grand Medal Final when she won her regional qualifier by four shots. Theresa, from Romford Golf Club, scored net 69 – four under her handicap – to win the East regional final at Bishop’s Stortford Golf Club. She leads 10 players who all booked their places in the Grand Medal Final to find England’s top handicap golfer. They are: Theresa Fisher (Romford), Jocelyn Faris (Bedford & County), Pam Kaye (Dereham), Jane Tytler (Channels), Jackie Henley (Gosfield Lake), Wendy Plummer (Brookmans Park), Margaret Bentley (Stoke by Nayland), Denise Goodacre (Lambourne), Amy Taylor (Bawburgh), Helen Medley (Stocks). They’ll play off with qualifiers from five other
events at the Grand Medal Final at Frilford Heath in Oxfordshire on Thursday, 13 August. It will be a feature of the new Golf Week festival, staged by England Golf to create a national grand finale for a host of handicap and team championships. Theresa’s performance in the regional final cut her handicap by two to 24. She commented: “I was very surprised to win, I didn’t expect it. I kept thinking ‘if I can do that score other people will do just as well.’ It was a lovely course and I did enjoy the day.” Her husband, Kevan, caddied for her and helped her to stay calm throughout the round – and he’s been booked for the Grand Final. “I’m looking forward to it, but I’ll probably have a sleepless night!” she laughed. “I’ve got nothing to lose, I shall just go and enjoy the game.” All the regional finalists had returned the best four scores at their club in the England Golf Medals during 2014.

Leigh-on-Sea Golfer Displays Perfect Timing to Record Hole-in-One
A
Leigh-on-Sea golfer will have no excuse for missing his next teetime after winning a limited-edition BOSS watch for achieving a hole-inone. Martin Eady, 53, scored his ace on the 173-yard, par-three fifth at Langdon Hills G&CC, and the 15-handicapper was rewarded with membership of the exclusive BOSS Watches H1Club and a speciallycommissioned, commemorative timepiece. He said: “It was a bright day but with a stiff headwind so I played a two-iron hybrid, which I only use for low shots. While I knew it was a good shot, it wasn’t until I got onto the green and didn’t see the ball that I thought I had a chance – and there it was, sitting at the bottom of the cup.” - 34 -

It’s Not Just The Course That’s Green at The Dorset Golf Resort The Resort goes green with great new green energy initiatives
S
pring is here and The Dorset Golf Resort has never looked better! Many new paths and walkways have been created to take the typical wear the course experiences during the year. More trees have been planted to change the shape of a good few holes with many areas opened up improving the views and scenery around the course. But it’s not only the course that’s green, during the winter the whole Resort has gone green moving over to green energy! The Resort is utilizing two sources of green energy installing 2 biomass boilers and two large areas of solar panels. These are positioned to deliver power across the complex from the large air conditioned clubhouse and panoramic restaurant to the Golf Hotel & Bowls Arena. “As one of the largest Golf Resorts in the South of England it’s important that we try to do everything we can to reduce our carbon footprint. We’ve even invested in a fleet of 20 electric buggies saving on our
petrol consumption. Many of our guests stay with us solely to enjoy the course and the area of outstanding natural beauty the Resort sits in. Our aim is to keep it that way for many years to come.” Graham Packer General Manager The Resort has cleverly installed all of the new green energy initiatives in areas that are hidden from plain sight. This means the outstanding area of natural beauty that the Resort sit’s in remains unspoilt. This latest project falls in line with Resorts previous development, of their twelve eco friendly 5 Star Scandinavian Luxury Log Houses. It’s great to see a Resort that‘s moving with the times and green everywhere from the course to the clubhouse!

Lee Porter, the PGA Professional attached to Hylands Golf Complex in Chelmsford, has been voted Clubmaker of the Year by the Golf Clubmakers Association in the UK. Lee now ranks in the top ten custom-fit clubmakers throughout Europe. No wonder he counts 8 touring golf pros as customers, including the ever popular local Pro, Robbie Coles.
The Centre Strike
The Purest Fundamental “Today’s clubs are so forgiving you can hit it anywhere on the face and still get a result” A common statement but unfortunately complete rubbish.
S
o, let me give you a piece of advice: If you cannot consistently hit the centre of the face on your irons or the middle of the face on your woods you will never reach your golfing potential. There are two causes of inconsistent striking – your clubs are incorrect for you or your technique needs some work. But, you cannot work on technique until you address your equipment. This may not mean new equipment, it can just be a case of modifying what you have already got.
Over the years I have read many golf books and I fail to give the author any credibility if there is no mention of the importance of centre strikes. I read a lot about swing plane but how can you preach about this if a basic fundamental like the lie angle is incorrect? If the iron was upright (toe off the floor) and the swing was good the ball would go left unless the player made an adjustment or compensation during the swing.
- 42 -
You cannot make a good swing with a poorly fitted golf club and expect to hit the ball consistently. I have also come to the conclusion that the word ‘Standard’ is the worst word in golf and over the years has probably wrecked more people's golf games then anything else. There is no standard, there is no standard length, no standard lie, no standard weight, no standard flex – do I need to go on? But, these are all aspects that effect striking the ball in the centre of the face. One of the first things we are taught when we start the game is how to align the head - it is incredible how many golfers I see who cannot do this due to their equipment. Your equipment should allow you to find the centre of the club, if it doesn’t then it’s wrong. With regards to hitting the ball anywhere on the face think of it like this – for every dimple you miss the sweet spot by you are losing out on both ball speed and directional control – and for what, to be ‘Standard’? “Many beginners and even experienced players defeat their efforts to play golf by depending on unsuitable equipment” – Tommy Armour

Essex County News by Neil Silver, Press Officer, Essex Golf Union www.essexgolfunion.org
Keating Trophy Callum Pipe (Braintree) fought back from three down with six to play to claim victory over Daniel Vaughan (Orsett) on the first extra-hole at Orsett Golf Club and lift the Keating Trophy. Pipe was never ahead in the match, but he responded to a pep talk from his Dad who was caddying for him. He produced a late rally to take Vaughan down the first extrahole and win the sudden-death play-off with a birdie four. Making the most of home advantage Vaughan got off to the ideal start, but as the nerves crept in during the back nine, Pipe fought his way back into the match. It was a bitter pill to swallow for Vaughan, who was also runner-up in this tournament two years ago. County Team Essex v Cambridgeshire Essex Played a strong Cambridgeshire side in the first County Trials friendly of the year at Saffron Walden for the David Hall Memorial Trophy. The course was in excellent condition with fast running greens and Essex held a 3-2 lead after the morning foursomes with strong performances from Andy May & Jay Beisser (on his return to the Amateur Ranks), County Captain Ross Dee & Mitchel Sarling and Scott Hudson & Elliott Oxlade. The afternoon singles saw Essex draw first blood with an outstanding performance from Elliott Oxlade who birdied four of the first five holes in romping home with a 7&6 victory, supported solidly by Andy May with a 3&2 Victory in the top match. Cambridge showed their experience and battled hard to secure five singles victories and a nail biting half in the match between Dave Quinney (Cambs) and Scott Hudson which meant that the David Hall Trophy would be shared for the first time in its nine year history. A notable Essex performance saw Bailee Curran secure an impressive 4&3 victory on his County debut. Mrs Marion Hall wife of former Essex County Captain and latterly Saffron Walden member the late David Hall and her four sons joined the teams and County Officials for dinner and Stewart Hall accompanied by the Saffron Walden Captain made a joint presentation of the trophy to the two County Captains Ross Dee (Essex) and Owen Cousins (Cambridge).
County & U18 v The Professionals Essex played the County Professionals in the Annual County Trials friendly at Frinton on Sea, where the magnificent course and benign conditions made for a very competitive match. Jason Spurr from Woolston Manor was drafted into the side on the morning to support, on paper, a strong Essex amateur team. The Professionals held a slender 3-2 lead after the morning foursomes with strong amateur performances from Andy May & Ricky Lee winning 5&4 and Todd Clements & Taylor Carter sneaking home 2&1 in a keenly contested bottom foursomes. In perfect afternoon conditions, Essex saw five of the singles matches turn away from them over the last few holes as halves or narrow losses against the professionals who had the ability to birdie when needed. Michael Gilbert, our England U16 International, was the only singles winner with a very mature performance in defeating Chris Nunn 2&1. Scott Hudson rescued a nail-biting half at the back of the field with a fine birdie four on the last hole against Tom Wiskin who birdied the last three holes for the professionals. Frinton on Sea Captain Luc Gagne presented the Professionals with the trophy which they retained with a 10 ½ to 4 ½ victory. - 45 -

Seniors Team Seniors v Suffolk
The Seniors hosted Suffolk at Upminster in their annual friendly to start the season and with the course in excellent condition both teams were caught out by the very fast greens. Mark Stones, playing his first game for the Seniors, got the match off to a good start with a 1 up win, closely followed by the home club’s Mike Copping who won by the same margin. Then Ian Grant and new boy Mike Nash lost narrowly to make the match even. Mark Lazarus halved on his debut and and the experienced Cliff Keeble lost narrowly. Dave Cook, yet another new boy, lost with one hole remaining and Trevor Patmore won on the 17th. Steve Hazel and Chris Aukett managed wins at the 17th and Ray Weidner and Chris Rate had wins well out on the course to give Essex a rather flattering winning score of 8½ to 3½.
U18 Team Cheshunt Salver The sun shone at West Essex where a combined team of Essex U18 & U16 boys commenced their season with their match against Hertfordshire playing for the Cheshunt Salver. The morning round of foursomes did not go our way with the U18’s recording only one win from three matches with Bailee Curran and Callum Hilton recording a win of 6 & 4.The U16’s captained by Ben Rendell, all halved their matches, leaving Essex two points down in the morning. U18 Captain Louis Lazarus led the team out in the afternoon singles. Of the six U18 players, we recorded 4 wins with Bailee Curran 4 & 2, Callum Hilton 1up, Jack Dyer 4 & 3 and Callum Pipe 2 & 1. The U16’s won two of their matches with Ben Rendell 1up and Harry Moncur 3 & 2 and Michael Gilbert halving his match, giving Essex a victory in the afternoon singles of 2 points. Overall result, match halved which is the same result two years running and Herts retained the trophy.

U16 Team U16 v Bedfordshire The 2015 U16's campaign kicked off with an away fixture against Bedfordshire on the extremely well prepared Bedford and County course. This season the Squad is led by Ben Rendell who took the reins for the last match of 2014. On a fine but chilly day, with the exception of the middle match the morning ten hole foursomes were closely contested with little to choose either way. Putts missed made all the difference and accounted for Bedfordshire pulling ahead three matches to two. The standout morning performance was from Liam Frances and Ben Franklin who unceremoniously demolished their opposition 5&3. The afternoon 18 hole singles between these two closely-matched teams was again a tale of what might have been. The putting surfaces were as good as you could get for April and put simply the Bedfordshire lads executed their skills on these tricky surfaces better than Essex. Despite Ben Franklin again making short work of his afternoon opponent winning 5&3 Essex lost the afternoon singles by six matches to four and overall the match nine to six.
U14 Team U14 v Kent & Surrey The U14 team lost to Kent and Surrey in a triangular league match played at Broke Hill in Sevenoaks. Our best individual result came from Flynn Dunmore winning both his matches. Carter Rowe, Harry Wood and Max Moreton won their games against Kent but went down to the Surrey boys. A notable win was that of James Styles; out at number one he beat his Surry counterpart with the help of some very good putting. James Butler halved with Surrey thanks to 2 fine birdie putts. Essex lost to Kent 16pts to 8 and lost to Surrey 19pts to 5. Surrey beat Kent 19pts to 5.The format for these triangular matches is 12 a side, played in handicap order off scratch.
U14 Junior Golf Tour The first meeting of the year, played annually at Gosfield Lake was, for a change, blessed with great weather. However, this cannot be the reason for the highest turnout we have experienced at the first event, as 52 boys and girls signed up to play and were treated to a course in excellent condition but set up in such a way that made great scores very difficult. The meeting also saw the highest number of girls entering the competition and it was the girls that dominated the scoring. Lily Humphries (Channels) has won the Girls Order of Merit three seasons running and made a

tremendous start this year by scoring the lowest round of the day. Playing off a 3 handicap she scored a great 2 over par beating James Styles (Chigwell) playing off 7 into second place scoring a gross 77. Last years Under 13 winner, James Butler (Boyce Hill) and playing off 10, scored a gross 73 giving him third place. Notably there were 4 girls in the first seven places! Lily won the girls prize with Sophie Wheeler (Orsett), playing off 14, taking second place. James Styles (Chigwell) took the Under 14 prize with James Butler in second place. Flynn Dunmore (Garon Park) scored an 89 to win the U13 section with Charlie Dodds (Channels) in second place with a gross score of 95. U12 youngsters were permitted to play if they hold a genuine CONGU handicap. Teddy Papple (Stock Brook Manor) scored a 93 with Harley Smith (Rayleigh) scoring 95 in second place. Finally, congratulations to the Essex Golf Union’s Immediate Past President John Peters, who has recently been elected on to the Board of England Golf. long way yet to go in the Jubilee Cup 2015 season and by the time you read this we will be approaching the Round 2 deadline of 10th May. Many of the leaders from last month have maintained their position; however, two-for-two victories for Colchester Golf Club have placed them firmly in the lead of Division B. Check out the full results at: www.jubileecup.com/matches2015/Draw1.htm Some significant wins in Round One with some 9 and 8-nil victories from clubs like Colchester, The Burstead, and Harwich & Dovercourt, plus also a sterling first result for 2015 newcomers Top Meadow. A result which even surprised their team, according to their Captain! And the Committee results aren’t too bad either with Neil Mitchell contributing a point, with playing partner John Sinclair, to the Crondon victory against Thorpe Hall, and “yours truly” securing a half against Mike Canham of Benton Hall which ultimately resulted in a loss for The Notleys Golf Club. Woodford 125th Anniversary Pro-Am Winning team with professional Steve Cipa and David Hawkins.
The last event of the winter season produced an emphatic win for Robbie Coles from Maylands Golf Club by no less than six shots from Mark Talbott from Thorpe Hall Golf Club and Chris Goddard from Romford Golf Club. An eagle and three birdies in the last four holes made absolutely sure of the victory and moved Coles to the top of the 2015 Order of Merit. Celebrating the 125th anniversary of Woodford Golf Club, the PGA in Essex brought the season to a resounding end with an amazingly successful event at the quaint but difficult course on the edge of Epping Forest. 17 teams on a 9 hole course played in two different loops was never going to be played at pace but nobody complained as they made their way round the beautifully scenic woodland. The team event was won by professional Steve Cipa from South Essex Golf Centre with 83 stableford points, the amateur partners being Kevin Lye and father and son Ed and Jesse Martin.

The final of the Trainee Match Play Championship took place at Thorndon Park Golf recently between James Webber from Three Rivers Golf and Country Club and Andy Shakespear from The Warren Golf and Country Club. Played on a beautiful spring afternoon amid the spendour of the Thorndon Park estate, the golf was equally enthralling and the lead ebbed and flowed throughout the match. Despite being one down at the turn, James Webber eventually prevailed to take the title and earn the final exemption into the Essex Open. Neil Bird from Leisure Link, the main sponsor of the PGA in Essex presented the trophy and winners cheque.

THE FORGOTTEN ROUTINE I
spend time where required with my player’s coaching the Pre shot routine which is an important part of your shot preparation both from a technical and psychological perspective. So what exactly is the post shot routine? Well, even the best player’s in the world hit bad shots just like everyone reading this article! It is the ability to erase the negative thoughts from their memory banks and recreate a committed swing preparing our mind and body ready for the next shot that makes the difference. As golfers, we tend to play with a great deal of pressure after a shot we are not happy with • Negative body language, (head down, shoulders slumped) • Negative swing thoughts (“Oh no not again, another poor shot now I am in a bunker which I know I can’t get out of”)
If we do not have a specific post shot routine or action to “delete” our mistimed shot we will more often than not carry that poor shot and destructive mind set to the next one and so on until we run out of stableford shots! My aim is to prevent the label I call the domino effect, we have all been there. Let’s replace with an energised and positive action which will lead to a more confident and happier golfer. So instead of firmly placing your club in your bag why not try the following which I hope will assist next time you play. I am certainly not advocating slow play here by the way ... So, firstly make sure you see where your ball has finished, not looking away in disgust. Take a couple of deep breaths make a committed and meaningful swing almost see the flight of the ball that you were trying to hit. I would never just ask a player to visualise a shot without an action as research shows so few people can actually visualise in isolation. When you have made that full flowing confident swing, place the club in the bag with the knowledge you have

replaced and deleted the poor swing. The positive swing signifies the start of a new shot now you can continue your round concentrating on the shot in hand. One of my favourite quotes is “The most important shot in golf is the next one” Ben Hogan With the match season upon us the “walk tall” and confident look after a poor shot is often hard to break down in a matchplay event, why not be that player who is hard to beat?

Sarah has been running GolfingGirl for many years, successfully promoting and introducing girls and ladies to golf. A formula which has ensured many of them remain in the game after initial sessions and join a Club. The variety of events sees many players return, years after they started to encourage new ladies and promote sustained growth of the game. Many have handicaps with one lady attaining a handicap at the age of 72, demonstrating its never too late to start.

Andrew wins the Cooper Bland Cup A
ndrew Patrick won Colchester Golf Club’s Cooper Bland Cup, Colchester’s first boarded competition of the year. Patrick playing off his nine handicap was drawn to play in the first group of the morning, "not his best time" as he had been heard to say. How wrong he was. Paring the first hole followed by a birdie on the second his round started well, and he was in the strong position of being just two over after nine. A good back nine including another birdie on the 16th gave him a nett 67, an excellent but not an unassailable position. With the recent dry period, the ball was running well and with the greens no longer grabbing the ball on landing it was presenting a different challenge to a full field. It was Tim Logan (7) and Stuart Macaulay (6) who pushed him closest, both returning 68s. Logan can rue a double bogie at the 4th and Macaulay can contemplate a triple bogie at the fifth but with three and four birdies each, they returned excellent rounds. Just not quite enough to topple Patrick’s excellent round. Coming fourth and fifth with credible 69s were Mike Sutton (10) and Bill Eke (5). The ladies played their MacKenzie Foursomes Cup qualifier. Once qualified the top eight pairs to go into a knockout, which is played out during the summer months. Winning the qualifying competition were Pat Kettle and Jo Mager with an excellent 72.5 nett. They were followed in by Cherie Clark and Annie Johnston with a 74.5 and Gill Crayston and Sharon Manby on 76 nett. In fourth spot, were Elaine Gilbert and Sheena Nunny on 76.5 followed by the nett 78 of Janet Austin and Claire Croger. Sharing a score of nett 78 were Chris Clark and Liz Duthie and one shot behind them were Alison Claire and Jane Reed. The final qualifying spot being taken by Patricia Walker and Bridget Whitworth on 79.5 nett. - 54 -

Alan Hyde, one of three Colchester winners.
C
olchester Golf Club’s seniors’ team came up against an in-form Three Rivers team to lose out in the first round of the Essex Seniors Team Championship. Played at Three Rivers, Colchester the champions of two years ago, soon realized they were up against it when only two of their eleven matches were up going through the ninth. Roger Robertson was first though, and although he had been down most of the match, he took Dave Gordon to the last before losing out by one hole. Likewise,Alan Hyde, who was giving six shots to his opponent Dave Sheehan, was two down through the ninth but Hyde took him down the 18th before coming up with the goods and taking his match one up. Dick Bokenham who received one shot against Brian Collins lost one down on the 18th. Dave Blackmore who received two shots from Mick Prewer lost out 2&1 on the 17th whilst Tom Rothery giving two shots to John Lambert also lost out one down. Four of the first five matches went down the last with Colchester narrowly losing out by one hole on three of them. The bad news for Colchester continued with Bill Eke who was giving seven shots to Jim Bance went down 6&4 and Vic Pomphrett giving four shots to Trevor Collett took his man to the 17th before losing 3&1.
All too late Dave Humberstone beat Steve Burford again on the 18th by two holes up, and John Waterson beat Keith McMullon 3&1. To complete the matches Chris Doyle and John Dornan lost out to Ron Firmin and Chris Kelly but by this time Colchester’s fate had been sealed. It was not all bad news for the Colchester teams as the ladies’ Mail On Sunday team had a good win three matches to two over Colne Valley Golf Club’s ladies to progress to the fourth round of this national competition. Played on a bright but blustery afternoon with the Colchester team giving shots to all their opponents it was Helen Tartellin, who giving six shots and going out first had a tough match against Cynthia Hollingsworth, finally succumbing on the 17th 2&1.
Mail on Sunday Maureen Devenish, Philippa Deman (Capt), Heather Dennis, Helen Tartellin, Cassie Cunningham and Sally Ann Angel.
Sally Ann Angel giving 3 shots overcame Karen Charles 6&4 and Heather Dennis giving one shot found too much sand for her liking to go down 2&1 against Angela Waite. Cassie Cunningham went out last and giving 8 shots played brilliantly to beat Amanda Rollings 6&5 leaving Maureen Devenish, who was giving two shots to Celia Larkham to complete the team's victory with a 2&1 win. The presentation of the Men’s Winter League Cup took place during the Men’s Supper. The winner’s twins Ben and Joe Williams were able to accept the trophy from Graham Napier the Essex and England all rounder. They earlier beat Jim Wilkinson and Ian Devenish in a tight final. Completing their task 3&1 on the 17th hole.
