Jamie Rolls Back The Years C

helmsford’s Jamie Moul rolled back the years to claim a welcome first Jamega Pro Tour victory after holding off a talented field at Dummer Golf Club, Hampshire. The former world ranked number one amateur, who partnered new US Masters champion Danny Willett in the 2007 Walker Cup, finished 11 under par, a shot clear of Craig Hinton with Liam Harper a further stroke back. “This is only my third professional win,” Moul said. “In the last couple of years I’ve had four or five seconds on the Jamega Tour and it would be nice to win a little more regularly.” Moul was pleased claim the £2,000 first prize after finishing runner-up at Reading in 2015 and then a week later losing a play-off at Enfield. “I’ve been unsuccessful at Dummer a couple of times, so was keen to rectify things,” Moul added, having played in the penultimate group. “Conditions were good and the course offers a lot of birdie opportunities if you are playing well. “The wind got up a bit on day two, but I held a couple of nice putts for par to keep the round going and didn’t look at the scoreboard. When I came into the clubhouse Craig said: ‘Well played’,

so I figured I’d pipped him. “A win’s a win, you take them where you can and the Jamega Tour has been great. I’d like to still be playing on the European tour but the Jamega Tour has been perfect. It’s two rounds, well run, and it’s competitive as you can see from the scoring and players that turn up. It’s a good field and you’ve still got to go and shoot the scores.” With Willet winning a first major crown at Augusta the week before, Moul could reflect on their differing fortunes. “Danny’s done fantastically well,” he said. ”His form in the last 12 months has been great so it shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone, but it was because it was the Masters. The way he closed it out was fantastic. “If you look at our team and the American team from the 2007 Walker Cup, the amount of guys that have gone on to win on [the European and PGA] tour and win majors is incredible. “I didn’t feel I was behind those guys then, and although on paper I am now, there’s no reason I cannot get my tour card back and be there or thereabouts. You need that little bit of luck to have the right week at the right time.”

Driving in the Change at Notleys Golf Club

A

new year has started at Notleys Golf Club - the new Club Captain; Darran “Daz” Liversidge drove in recently with great aplomb, as you can see here following his first drive for 2016 among the crowd of member spectators at the course. Daz (on right) was joined by his colleague David Brackenbury (on left), for the Seniors Section, in supporting his charity for the year in raising funds for local Essex charities with the CSS Charitable Trust where he works: www.csspeople.co.uk/our-blog/view/css-charitable-trust3rd-annual-golf-day-25th-september-2015-gosfield-golf

Outgoing Captain Adam Painter passed on the honour, and the burden to the new captains for a new golfing year, and Daz immediately launched into his inter-club commitments with a Norman Plum challenge against Crondon Park, and Jubilee Cup matches with West Essex at home, and Benton Hall away.

The Notleys Jubilee Cup team against Benton Hall – Club Captain Daz Liversidge is on the extreme right.

Good luck to Daz and Dave on a fantastic 2016 seasons, and we wish all Club Captains in Essex “all the best” for the season ahead! - 14 -

Big Bang at Woodford Golf Club I

t was a bright idea that exploded in his face. Seniors’ captain Julian Greatrex was concerned that although the Woodford Golf Club captain and also the ladies’ captain launched their terms in office with a drive-in. This did not apply to the seniors’ section. So, halfway through his year-long tenure, the Welshman decided to introduce a seniors’ captain’s drive-in for the first time. But what he had not reckoned with was the devious ways of the membership for when he marched up to the 10th tee to inaugurate, somewhat late, his tenure, the seniors’ competition supremo had a surprise in store for Captain Greatrex. As the captain smote the ball, a huge puff of smoke appeared, for the competition secretary had clandestinely placed an exploding ball on the tee peg instead of a normal ball. Only Tom Steed, the perpetrator of

the ruse, and the photographer, 2013 club captain John Michael Wade, were privy to this jape. Once he had got over the shock of this unexpected event, Captain Greatrex went on to strike a proper ball a decent 117 yards down the fairway. Still, he got his own back on the crafty Tom Steed in ruling that no competitor could win more than one prize in the ensuing competition so that Steed was denied a runnerup place in the stableford tournament as he had already got a prize for nearest the pin on the 16th. Captain Greatrex hopes that following this novel launch, future seniors’ captains will start their term with a drive-in after their November election, but without the big bang that he innocently endured.

Focus on your Target! W

hen you are on the course it is important, you focus on your target. The question is if you are not thinking about the target you are probably thinking about what not to do such as the water, miss hitting or the out of bounds. It is the nature of sport to focus on where you want the ball to go.Your target should be as specific as possible so your mind has something very small to focus on. This is a similar idea to other sports such as football where David Beckham is taking a free kick he will aim for a specific part of the goal or Roger Federer will be aiming for specific part of the tennis court. You will not always hit it at your target but by having a narrow focus you will have more chance of doing so. PICK ELEVATED TARGETS A good way to help you get focus on where you want the ball to go is to pick an elevated target such

as the top of a tree ... By picking a higher target you won’t see the trouble as much and will be able to make a more positive swing. THE SMALLER THE TARGET THE BETTER Players will pick the smallest target as possible so instead of aiming for a tree, try aiming for a specific branch of the tree in the distance. You may not always hit that target but that is how our mind works best.

Matt is moving to become Head PGA Coach at Rivenhall Oaks Golf Centre which is a superb facility with great facilities for working on all parts of your game and he is looking forward to working with the team there ... More news and developments will be in the next months issue ... - 20 -

New Improvements at Thorpe Hall Golf Club

T

horpe Hall Golf Club has never been reluctant to make improvements both on and off the course and its forward thinking policies were rewarded in April when Members celebrated the opening of their newly refurbished lounge, restaurant and spike bar facilities. The refurbished facilities were officially declared open by Thorpe Hall’s Tour Professionals Richard McEvoy and Matthew Southgate (pictured below), who took time out of their European Tour schedule to join in the celebrations with Club Members, who were treated to an evening of live music, dancing, and a superb buffet catered for by our excellent Hospitality Staff.

The £250k refurbishment which was coordinated by a group of hardworking club members features a total renovation and redecoration, a new bar, carpets, curtains, furniture, state of the art lighting, and heat exchange units. The Clubhouse is a lively social hub in the local area, hosting numerous events including weekly live music, bistro nights and a first class Sunday Lunch! The work has made the Clubhouse much more flexible and functional enabling the Club to host functions without impacting on members’ enjoyment of the club, one Member said “we now have a Clubhouse to match out superb Golf Course.” - 21 -

England Golf Supports First English Disability Open

to the Championships team at England Golf. It will create an event which provides a clear competitive pathway for amateur disabled golfers. ngland Golf is partnering the charity BALASA to support the first English Disability Open Championship at the Forest of Arden, Warwickshire, from 27-28 August 2016. BALASA is the charity promoting golf for all disabilities and its secretary, Ian Dixon, commented: “BALASA are delighted to collaborate with England Golf on the first English Disability Open. This partnership, together with Marriott Forest of Arden, aims to deliver a successful and memorable tournament for all.” The championship will be open to all disabled golfers who meet the definitions of impairment as set out in the conditions and who hold a CONGU handicap with competition status. Golfers, regardless of their impairment, will play in three handicap categories over 36 holes on the Arden Championship Course. Category One and Two golfers will compete in strokeplay events and Category Three golfers will play a Stableford competition. Awards will be made to the winner of each handicap category. Prizes will also be awarded for highest placed junior and female players. Entries have now opened and the form can be downloaded at www.balasa.org/events Entries will be accepted on a first come, first served basis with a reserve list in operation. The tournament is the start of a process to develop an event that meets the needs of disabled golfers and which creates as many parallels as possible to the golf competitions already run by England Golf. It marks the beginning of an organisational transition from disability golf groups, which have previously run the national disability golf events,

Jamie Blair, England Golf ’s Disability Manager, said: “As part of our role as the governing body for amateur golf in England, we are pleased that this starts a period of learning between those who have provided disability golf competitions for a number of years and the England Golf Championships Team. “Taking a lead in all areas of our game, including disability golf, has been a key aim within our Raising Our Game strategy. I hope that this event can evolve over time with the work we are doing at a grassroots level to create a bigger field, a junior competition and embrace other partners’ events. www.balasa.org

I

n this edition and continuing with my theme on the pivot, I am going to explain my thoughts on the dynamic sequence of the downswing, and that is put simply as the hips lead the shoulders and knees, which in turn lead the arms which in turn lead the club shaft and club head into impact. Picture 1 shows me at the top of my backswing, and Picture 2 shows me halfway down. There are two points that are imperative to this successful transition. Firstly, the hips have started their rotation to impact and secondly the shoulders are still slightly turned away from the target. This ability to return the hips to impact leading the shoulders, knees, arms and lastly the club head

1

is essential, but not possible if you cannot isolate the rotation of the hips from the shoulders. To get the correct feeling for this try this simple drill Picture 3, I am holding a club to my right with my shoulders turned away from the target. From here rotate your left hip back towards the target whilst maintaining the upper body and shoulders in their original position. Picture 4. If you can achieve this in the swing, you will increase your potential energy without losing control of your club path and plan. Next issue impact and where your body should be. Have fun

Willett’s Wonderful Win Throws Spotlight on English Golf

playing for England in 2008 (copyright Tom Ward). “Ultimately the performance is down to the player, but many of them have said that the opportunities they have had along the way have been outstanding – whether it’s from a junior organiser at their club, someone running county events, someone offering regional coaching, or the chance to play for England or going to the Walker Cup or Curtis Cup,” said Edwards. “Obviously, it’s down to the player, whether they have the heart and the will to put in the hard work, whether they have the desire. But everyone contributes.” www.englandgolf.org

anny Willett’s dramatic win in The Masters led a remarkable display by English golfers at Augusta which is set to inspire a new generation of players. New champion Willett was accompanied in the top 10 by Lee Westwood (T2), Paul Casey (T4), Matt Fitzpatrick (T7) and Justin Rose (T10). Meanwhile Chris Wood shared 42nd place. In addition Charley Hull is flying the flag for the women’s game, having been runner up in the first Major of the season, the Ana Inspiration, earlier this month. All seven players have been involved with England Golf, either as champions or team players – or both. “This is inspirational,” said Nigel Edwards, England Golf Performance Director, as he reviewed Willett’s wonderful performance, carding a blemish free 67 in the final round to hold off Westwood and leave no way back from a 12th hole disaster for defending champion Jordan Speith. “Who ever said golf was boring?” said Edwards, who has captained two GB&I Walker Cup teams to victory. “All the media are going crazy about this and hopefully we can have another surge, as there was for European golf in the 80s and 90s.” The successes have thrown the spotlight on English golf and the work of England Golf, supported by clubs and counties, to create champions. England Golf ’s training programme offers coaching and playing opportunities to the country’s most talented players to help them develop their skills. For Willett that included trips to Australia – where he won the Australian stroke play championship – and to Spain, where he won the Spanish amateur before turning professional as the world number one amateur. Salisbury and Reeve Storm to Spring Win

E

ssex golf professional David Salisbury combined work and pleasure as he and partner Mark Reeve landed the Searles PGA Spring Classic. Salisbury, a trainee at Three Rivers Golf and Country Club, brought his wife and baby son to north Norfolk for an Easter break – and also landed top spot in the East region’s seasonal curtain-raiser. Salisbury and 21-handicapper Reeve looked to have a bit to do after the first day at Kings Lynn. They accrued 37 points from the Stableford greensomes to trail leading duo Andrew George (Ely City) and Mick Munnelly by four. But in a stunning day-two display at Hunstanton, Salisbury and Reeve piled up the points in the better-ball format. They blitzed the front nine, notching no less than 24 points. Their back nine was only slightly less spectacular as they bagged another 21 to notch 45 in all. That left Salisbury and Old Hunstanton resident Reeve on 82 points for the two days – two clear of George and Munnelly, who finished runner-up in this event for the second year on the trot. It was a great start to the campaign for Salisbury, who defied the odd bit of rustiness to follow up his fine feats of 2015 in which he ended up second on the regional Order of Merit. Salisbury said: “It’s a nice start to the season. Mark and I worked really well as a team. Since the Play-Offs last November, I’ve had about 10

holes at home and went away for a week in Portugal last month. Apart from that, I haven’t played at all. “There was rust there, but the good stuff was still there as well. It won’t take long to get it all good. But when I had rusty holes, Mark played fantastic. When he went down, I was good. “My wife, the little one Ryan and I are in a caravan. We’re staying up for another night, so we’ve turned it into a little bit of a holiday. We’ll go into Hunstanton, which should be good and then head home.” Chris Cutchie (Colchester) and Phil Clarke finished a point behind second-placed pair George and Munnelly. Norfolk’s Ian Ellis (Great Yarmouth & Caister) showed he’s in decent early-season form, taking fourth spot on 78 points along with playing partner Randy Reynolds. Searles PGA in England (East) Spring Classic: (First day Stableford greensomes at Kings Lynn, second day better ball at Hunstanton), leading scores: 82: D Salisbury (Three Rivers G&CC) and amateur M Reeve 37 45. 80: A George (Ely City) and M Munnelly 41 39. 79: C Cutchie (Colchester) and P Clarke 39 40. 78: I Ellis (Great Yarmouth & Caister) and R Reynolds 39 39. 77: J Levermore (Channels) and M Juley 36 41; M Stokes (Rayleigh Golf Range) and D Messenger 40 37. 76: B Kerr (Bourn Golf&Leisure) and M Hartley 37 39; S Teer (Clacton). - 30 -

Jan’s Recruitment Drive is Winner with England Golf E

ssex golfer Jan Tallentire has been so successful at encouraging other women to take up the game that she’s won a top England Golf award. Jan, from Warley Park Golf Club, near Brentwood, was presented with the Participation Award at a gala dinner last night at the England Golf annual conference, which celebrated the golfers and golf clubs who make the game great and inspire others to play. The award recognises Jan’s remarkable drive to inspire new women players. In just two years her efforts have given a taste of the game to around 170 women, more than 40 have signed up for Get into golf coaching courses and 26 have taken out a special nine-hole membership at the club. IMAGE © LEADERBOARD PHOTOGRAPHY

Jan Tallentire (right) was presented with her award by Liz Aitken, Sport England Relationship Manager.

She said: “I feel extremely honoured to receive this award, but for me the pleasure has been seeing many of the lady beginners carrying on playing as a group, and enjoying the game we love so much. “New friends have been made, partnerships established and competitions played. It has been so very rewarding. Whereas it is often seems difficult for ladies to get into golf, I decided to take golf to the ladies. The results have been wonderful.” Jan’s recruitment campaign started when she was Ladies’ Captain in 2014 and she decided to

address the issue of declining membership of the ladies’ section and to boost their finances. She organised and filled four experience days, attracting 80 women, Last year, she repeated the days with 90 women and this time more emphasis was placed on longer term involvement with the club by offering coaching, playing and social activities. The unaffiliated membership of the nine-hole course costs just £198 and players can enjoy the advantage of regular and large holes and forward tees. Since last May, 26 women have taken out the membership and are successfully integrating with the ladies’ section, encouraging six of the beginners to consider full membership. In addition, three husbands of the novice golfers have also joined and are enquiring about full membership. Warley Park’s PGA professional Craig Harman said “The club has been rejuvenated with all the new ladies. They have brought a new buzz to the club”. Jan and the club have further plans for 2016. Three more ladies’ days and a new family day are scheduled for the spring. The club feels this is the natural route to attract more juniors and adult members. The club is additionally exploring the expansion of the 9-hole membership to existing members and making it an affiliated membership. To find out more contact Jan via enquiries@warleypark.co.uk

England U18 East Region Meets Charley

S

arah Bennett’s England East Regional Squad were in for a treat when during their final match of the season which Sarah arranged at Woburn v Thames Valley. After a morning of working on their short game, they found out Charley was due at Woburn and being a case of “Right place at the right time” met Charley, who obliged for the

obligatory photo much to the delight of the Team. “It is vital for our young player’s to have their role model to aspire so this capped off a truly memorable day for the team. I am hoping many will support Charley during her bid for her first Major to be played later in the year on the same course, The Marquess” - 35 -

Hogan is quoted as “Golf is 20 percent talent and 80 percent management” which depicts the importance of course management.

SO WHAT IS

COURSE MANAGEMENT? I

would personally describe course management as the actions and decision making process a golfer employs to negotiate their way round the course within their capabilities. The various decisions and shot selections a golfer faces are influenced by a number of factors some of which I have included in this article.

- 36 -

CLUB SELECTION AND JUDGEMENT

PLAYING CAPABILITIES

Knowing the average “carry” of each club is critical to good course management. This can be achieved by finding the average carry distance per club by hitting 5-10 balls with each club (where the ball first strikes the ground) is then taken from the centre of the ball cluster. This knowledge is key when faced with a layup yardage or a shot over water. There is nothing more frustrating than playing “safe” only to watch the ball roll into or land in the middle of the pond ... an extra shot!!

When confronted with a shot over a bunker, water hazard or obstruction, look at the possibility of taking the shortest and safest line. This strategy is particularly useful if you feel apprehensive or unsure if the carry is achievable. This alternative route places less pressure on you to hit the perfect shot yet achieves the main objective of keeping the ball out of trouble and in play. A sure confidence booster and shot saver! There will be many occasions when aiming directly at the flag can ruin a wellpositioned drive and scorecard in stroke play. An example of such as situation is the famous road hole bunker on the 17th at St Andrews. When the flag is positioned behind the dreaded bunker even the best in world ignore the flag and aim for the safe portion of the green. The golfer figure 1 is not even aiming for the flag, but taking his medicine and playing to the heart of the green. Figure 1

WEATHER / COURSE CONDITIONS When playing a hole downwind, consider using the more lofted 3 wood instead of a driver from the tee. The higher ball flight with additional carry will be advantageous meaning the ball will often go further and straighter then the driver. A course designer will have strategically positioned obstacles trying to catch out the unsuspecting golfer! Play smart; don’t fall into the trap of trying to thread a driver in between or over a hazard. Use a club that will keep you short of the trouble without adding unwanted penalty shots. I will finish off this article with a short quote to bear in mind next time you play! “Hit the shot you know you can hit, not the one you think you should” Bob Rotella. With the season drawing to a close, we held two of our non Order of Merit events during recent weeks;

T

he last day of March saw the Essex PGA at Romford Golf Club for the Lady Vice Presidents Cup which is a mixed greensome with a variety of couples both Professional and Amateur. A relaxed day for the Professionals and in beautiful spring sunshine the pairing of Lloyd Kennedy from Woolston Manor Golf Club and his partner Shelley Edkins took the spoils from local Professional Chris Goddard and his wife Lisa. The first week in April was the annual match between the Essex Professional and the Essex Amateur team. The Professional team were going for three wins in a row but the Amateur team swept the board during the morning foursomes with a 5-0 whitewash. It was never going to be easy coming back from such a deficit and the Amateur team ran out as convincing winners. Our thanks go to Frinton Golf Club for hosting the event again and we look forward to regaining the trophy in 2017.

Braintree Pro-Am only three points separating Lloyd Kennedy and Mark Talbot the contest to lift the first prize in the Porsche Order of Merit will go down to the last event, the Essex Open at The Burstead Golf Club in May. To seal a successful day, James Scade’s team of Malcolm Prior, Paul Duley and Andy Packer won the team event with 85 stableford point.

O

n a sparkling day at Braintree Golf Club, James Scade set the course alight with an amazing 7 under par 63 which included 8 birdies. This was enough to take the Professional first prize by 6 shots from Jason Levermore and by 7 shots from Marc Dodd. This win pushed Scade into a solid third place in the Order of Merit, surprisingly the two players fighting for top spot in the OOM both failed to score any points. With - 38 -

Under 16’s

E S S EX v B E DF ORDS HI RE At Woodford Golf Club – Thursday 31 March 2016

The 2016 under 16s campaign kicked off with a home fixture against Bedfordshire on Woodford Golf Club’s compact nine hole course laid out at the edge of Epping Forest. In the absence of this year’s captain Harry Moncur, away on national coaching with other squad members, the team was led by Callum Hensby. The assorted absences provided an early opportunity for graduates from last season’s under 14 squad to make an impact and stake a claim for a regular spot in the team. Although this match was contested in bright sunshine there was a chill in the air and due to heavy overnight rain the going would be best described as soft with occasional boggy patches. However despite the underfoot conditions the putting surfaces were quite firm and the ball rolled well. A couple of late withdrawals deprived our opponents of two players so the morning nine hole foursomes were reduced to four matches. At the lunch adjournment Essex had pulled out an early lead of three matches to one, but any thoughts of a cruise to victory were quickly dispelled as our opponents sprinted to an early lead in the afternoon singles matches. In the first match out Callum Hensby made short work of his opponent, but with Bedfordshire successfully bagging the next three matches the overall scores drew level. Last man out Josh Gray came in early with a resounding 6 & 5 win to give Essex the lead again, but with the next two matches lost and won CONTINUED OVERLEAF

the chance of an Essex victory was in the hands of last man on the course Max Maynard who arrived at the par three eighteenth tee one down. His opponent J R Ellis had the honour and missed the green right, but Max fired his tee shot to around twelve feet from the flag. To tie the match the Bedfordshire boy needed to get up and down but his long chip shot was well wide. Max’s birdie putt wandered inconveniently past the hole to a somewhat uncomfortably distance and when JR missed his putt it was left for Max to hole out from three feet to halve the match and take Essex to a season opening victory. Our grateful thanks go to Woodford Golf Club and its members for facilitating this match and in particular to past Essex Golf Union President John Peters who acted as host and starter for the day. E SS E X v H E RT S (CH ES H UN T SALV E R) At Bishops Stortford – Monday 4th April 2016

The day was cold, dry and cloudy with a freshening breeze. The course was well prepaired but due to the extremes of recent weather, winter rules, re preferred lies were in force as well as plugged balls through the green. The morning round was 18 hole foursomes with 12 players from each side each containing 6 under 16’s and 6 under 18’s. Essex started the day with one less player but the under 14 Herts captain stood in and played with Callum Pipe who lost on the 18th hole. The under 18’s lost their first 2 opening matches but the remaining four matches all recorded wins with Harry Moncur and Jack Garnett (under 16’s) recording the largest win of 5 & 4. The under 16’s won all their matches giving Essex a monring lead of 6 points to 4. In the afternoon, George Gennings very kindly at shrot notice made himself available to replace our missing player and immediately made an impact. After 5 holes George was 4 up having eagled one hole and birdied 2 others. Over the the remaining holes the Herts player rallied and was able to win on the 18th. Of the remaining matches which were all very close, 5 were won / lost on the 18th. Michael Gilbert (under 16) had a very close match against a fellow England golfer – Harry Goffard, winning 2 & 1. Aaron Edwards-Hill was hit by a Tsunami in the form of John Hopkins who chipped in twice and had 8 birdeis in 13 holes. Aaaron was only one over par at the conclusion of their match and had played very steady golf. Both Jack Dyer (captain) and Callum Pipe both won their matches respectively scoring 3 & 2 and 3 & 1. Again the under 16’s won the majority of their matched in the afternoon, 4 from 6 and should be congratulated on a fine display of golf. Overall Essex won the day and the Cheshunt Salver, scoring a total of 10 points to Herts 8, as on the last 2 occasions Herts had retained the Salver due to the matches being halved. Well done Essex. ES S EX v P ROF ES SI ALS Frinton on Sea Golf Club – Thursday 7th April 2016

Team from left to right: George Gennings, Scott Hudson, Ryan Cox,Taylor Carter, Mitchel Sarling, Jack Dyer, John Hanrahan, Callum Pipe, Arron Edwards-Hill and Alasdair Plumb.

Essex Played the County Professionals in the Annual County Trials friendly at Frinton on Sea GC. The Course was as usual in magnificent condition with true and fast running greens that drew praise from both sides. However the conditions were testing with chill winds and periodic showers making for a very competitive match by the sea for which both teams were anxious to prevail with the amateurs particularly keen to avenge defeats suffered in the last two years. The morning foursomes turned out to be better than expected with the County Team holding a 5-0 advantage at lunch with notable winning performances from Alasdair Plumb & Jack Dyer by 5&4 and Ryan Cox & Callum Pipe by 4&3. The Professionals drew first blood in the afternoon with European Tour player Lloyd Kennedy defeating Acting Team Captain Taylor Carter 1up in a most exciting and competitive battle. Excellent winning performances in the singles from Mitchel Sarling 5&4, Jack Dyer 3&1 and Scott Hudson 2&1 ensured that Essex Amateurs won this very prestigious match and Trophy. Team Captains Chris Nunn (Pro’s) and Taylor Carter (Amateurs) praised each other for the spirit in which the match was played and both thanked Frinton on Sea GC for hosting the event, complementing the Management and staff for the magnificent condition in which the course was presented and indeed the for the hospitality shown to both sides in the clubhouse. Under 14 Triangular League Match Sunday April 10th was our first league match played at Southern Valley GC in Gravesend. Our opponents on the day were Hertfordshire and Kent. The course was very much like a links layout with a consistent cold wind blowing, some would say it was “a wee breeze” playing its part. Our boys beat Kent 7 matches to 5, but lost to Herts. by the same score. The hosts then lost to Herts 9.5/2.5 leaving the division looking like this Herts 33 pts, Essex 24 pts and Kent 15 pts. There were some encouraging performances by the Essex boys whose handicaps ranged from 5 to 13 (the matches are played in handicap order off scratch). First player out Flynn Dunmore (Garon Park) had a great battle with his Herts. opponent losing 2&1 whilst beating his Kent counterpart easily. Flynn made 7 pars and 2 birdies on his way round. Mikey Charlton had 2 good wins again recording 7 pars and 2 birdies in the round. Young Jesper Laurence (Stock Brook Manor) had a fine debut losing to Kent but having a great battle with Herts. before finally winning 2&1. Perhaps performance of the day came Lewis Wright (North Weald) winning 8&6 (Kent) and 3&2 (Herts) showing some good shot shaping and chipping in the difficult conditions. Another 2 win player was James Holt (Chelmsford) 4&3 Kent 3&1 Herts. Claiming 3 birdies on the way, at no time did James appear to be daunted by the conditions with putting being a major part of his success. Matt O’Conner (North Weald) was a 3&2, 4&3 dual winner for Essex. Our reserve Jon Russell (Langdon Hills) deserves mention for his fine performance in a 1 win 1 loss round he managed 8 pars which on my calculation would have won more than half of the matches played on the day, the leftie mastered the conditions as well as anyone. We now go to Cheshunt on Sunday 22nd May for the game hosted by Herts.

Mighty Master Golf Event 2016 The 2016 Mighty Masters Golf Day, an annual free day for novice junior golfers and their parents, was held for the 14th year running at The Epping Golf Course on Thursday 7th April. The day, whilst cold and wet welcomed over 50 children and their families to the course and gave them an opportunity to play golf, with 9, 6 and 3 hole competitions, putting, chipping and PGA coaching. A host of volunteers including the Essex Golf Union were on hand to give help and advice to the young golfers, and Daniel Robinson & Sons, proud sponsors of the event supplied an array of fantastic prizes. Overall winner on the day was Jack Preston aged 10, whilst last year’s winner Ryan Robinson, has gone on to take up golf and win many more local competitions. - 45 -

The

Jubilee Cup Update from Jubilee Cup Committee, sponsored by Seabrook Warehousing, and reported by Chairman Phil Redhead

T

hanks to you all for the spirit of all clubs who are participating in 2016. We have had some excellent comments coming in from Competition captains on the results sheets. The Five Lakes and Warley Park GC Captains agreed “enjoyable day, excellent bunch of guys, good friendly club. VERY WELL PLAYED!” Many other positive responses have been provided even just from Round 1 which has now completed – with one exception due to inclement weather for one club. By the time of publication of Essex Golfer, I would expect all Round 2 matches to have been played – over half have been done at time of writing which has already shown some substantial movement on the League positions. Indeed, the scores for the matches played so far have had some significant win/losses for teams including 9-0 and 8.5-0.5 games (twice!). When you read this, all of the second round matches will have been played and portrayed on the web at: www.jubileecup.com/matches2016/draw2.htm Round 3 matches are below, and due to complete by 5th June – keep tracking the results by our website specific to Round Three at www.jubileecup.com/matches2016/draw3.htm The full set of Divisions making up the 2016 competition, and all the individual matches drawn are detailed on the Jubilee Cup website for you perusal. Essex Golf Union’s Youth Shield

C

lacton-on-Sea Golf Club’s Essex Golf Union’s “Youth Shield” team travelled to Colchester Golf Club on a wet, windy and very cold Saturday afternoon to play their first round league match of this prestigious County competition. The course was very wet and congratulations must go to the Colchester clubs green keepers for presenting the course in first class condition despite the fact that it was a case of water everywhere. In match 1, Clacton’s Max Smith lost 1 down to Colchester’s Cai James, in match 2, Clacton’s Katy Yates lost to Daniel Nicholls at the first extra playoff hole, in match 3 Clacton’s Junior Captain Riley Faulkner won 1 up against Harry Hill, in match 4, Clacton’s Josh Bethell lost 2 down against Oliver Allison and in the final match Clacton’s 13 year old Wilf Elliott was three down at one point to Joseph Jackson but showing great sprit and fought back to win at the first extra playoff hole. Clacton lost this opening match of the 2016 competition 3 matches to 2 matches. However, with both teams playing par golf the spectators had a wonderful afternoons sport, as did the players.

Clacton Golf Club News C

lacton Golf Club’s Lady Captain Gilly Cullen welcomed the Ladies from Langdon Hills Golf Club to Clacton for the Essex Ladies Golf Union Bronze Match. The Clacton team of Lady Captain Gilly Cullen, Jennie Corbyn, Brenda Lord, Chris Crossfield, Heather Bradfield, Jackie Bright and Kath Sinnott all played well. However, Clacton lost on the 2nd extra play off hole, by the narrowest of margins 4 matches to 3. Clacton had another four matches to complete their league section, the teams Clacton will play are The Warren, Burnham-on-Crouch, Rochford Hundred and Forester Park. Clacton Golf Club’s Essex Golf Union “Leslie Wood” Team Captain Steve Parkes, welcomed Top Meadow Golf Club to Clacton for this firstround match, at lunch following the morning foursome's matches Clacton were leading by 5 matches to Nil, In the afternoon singles matches Colin Ross, Brady Diplock, Graig Green and Darren Starling all played well giving Clacton 13 matches to two matches win and a home match with Maldon Golf Club in the second round.

Great Win for Colchester

A

win by Colchester Golf Club’s Thornton Cup team sends them on their way in this the county's premier team matchplay competition. Colchester won by the tightest of margins, eight matches to seven. The weather was perfect, the course tight, quirky and with a layout totally different to Colchester. It was always going to be a tight match. After the morning’s foursomes, the scores were level at 2½ matches each, and the afternoon matches, whilst throwing up some good wins for both sides never produced a clear leader. Alan Sharrocks as the lead-off man halved his

match, but it was Cai James, who gave Colchester an early lead with a 5&4 win, followed by Dan Eke who had another 5&4 victory. These victories were soon negated as Burstead fought back with wins over Richard Withnall and Steve Wynne. Jason Nicolls had a good 2&1win along with Lewis Barber but with James Angel and Roger Wright losing out the scores on paper at least were level. The deciding match was fittingly the last out on the course, and Colchester’s victory was sealed when Brendan Booth using his years of experience in county competitions to the full secured his match 5&4 to win the tie.

Defeat for Terry at Clacton

Clacton and Maldon GC players after the Pisa Cup match.

C

lacton-on-Sea’s Golf Club Captain Nick Smith welcomed his counterpart Terry Butcher and his team from Maldon Golf Club to Clacton for the home leg of the annual "Pisa Cup" match. The day began with a hearty English breakfast, The Clacton team of Captain Nick Smith, Gary Lee, Paul Pidgeon, Simon Smith, Richard Hart, Danny Thomas, Fred Allerton, Cliff Cullen, Simon Bates, Lee Hale,

Steve Scott, Jiwan Rai, Adam Stringer, Mark Grover, Bob Davidson, Ronnie Miller, Pete Smith and Scott Smith proved that home advantage really is a benefit by winning this match 8-1. When representing the Pisa Cup, Maldon Captain Butcher thanked Clacton for a first rate day’s golf and reminded Clacton that he is looking forward to playing Clacton at the Maldon Club later in the year.

Centenary Medals at Colchester Golf Club

Simon Rippingale.

S

imon Rippingale and Roger Wright were the victorious twosome to win Centenary Medals at Colchester Golf Club. Played on a cold uninviting late April Sunday the two medals, presented by the Porter family in the Club’s Centenary year, are awarded for the best gross score and best nett score in the competition. Roger Wright, playing off four, came out tops with a gross score of 73. This continues his run of consistent form stretching back to last September when he won the Moy Cup. Wright’s back nine showed signs of nerves when he had three bogeys in the last five holes, but a birdie on the 18th allowed him to finish with a flourish.

Roger Wright.

He was three shots better than Alan Sharrocks (2) who returned a gross 76 with Brendan Booth (5) putting in another sold performance with his 77 gross. Simon Rippingale (13) winner of the handicap Medal also finished with birdie on the 18th to squeeze past David Barnes (14) after a countback with a nett score of 68. Returning nett 69s were Wright and Mike Lapham (12) with Booth and Mark Culley (11) taking the minor spots with nett 72s.

Winning Start for Silver Trophy Team

S

toke by Nayland opened their 2016 Essex Silver Trophy campaign with a resounding win against old rivals, Chigwell GC. The two teams had last met in the Silver Trophy Final in 2014, and Chigwell had edged a very close match. Stoke had prepared well with three coaching sessions organised by Head professional Roly Hitchcock with some help from former European Tour player Jamie Moul. This season showed a slight change in personnel, and it was Margaret Bentley, who led the team out. The cold conditions were not ideal for all ten players, but all played well and produced some excellent golf. Margaret put the first point on the board with a 5 and 4 victory over Fiona Juby. A second point was added when an inspired Bev Thompson finished her match, against the Chigwell Lady Captain, on the 12th hole. Sybil Paton and Sue Latham both had to battle to win their matches, which were extended to the 19th hole, after being all square at 18. Sue Spittlehouse gained the fifth point with a 3

LIE ANGLE The Missing Fundamental F

or most people the lie angle, or how the golf club sits on the ground, is a fairly insignificant element of their golf club. Why? In my opinion it is because we are currently in a golfing world full of custom fitting terms like ‘kick point’ and ‘smash factor’, which sound far more exciting. But just how important is the lie angle of your golf clubs? In my opinion lie angle is the lost fundamental, just as important as your grip or stance. Allow me to explain – most first golf lessons start by aiming the club at the target, taking their grip and then their stance. For me, this makes perfect sense - the club needs to point in the direction you want the ball to go, the grip cannot be applied until the club is aimed and taking a stance before aiming

the club just seems wrong somehow. But let’s rewind to the aim – if the club sits incorrectly then your face aim will be poor. In itself this may not sound a problem but due to the fact that 75% of the initial flight of the ball comes from face alignment alone you start to see the importance. A golf club too upright (the toe of the club off the floor) will aim the club face left; a flat lie angle (the toe digging into the turf) will aim right. This is actually an optical illusion because no matter how square (the club aiming at the target) you think your club face is, it will always be offline due to the relationship between the loft of the golf club and the lie angle – the greater the loft the more exaggerated the clubs aim.

So if the clubs lie angle is wrong how can you hit the ball straight? Well, you can’t - without making compensations. This is basically a movement in the golf swing to ‘offset’ the initial mistake. Interestingly, this may have not been a conscious decision – it was probably instinct. Figure 1 shows an upright lie angle (toe up) with the face aiming left. Figure 2 shows a correct lie angle with the face aiming at the target. Let me give you an example: if I were to put you in front of a goal with a couple of footballs and ask you to kick the ball into the net, I doubt this would be too taxing. But let's say you missed the first shot to the left, would you then analyse your kicking action and foot position to ensure you scored with the second ball or would instinct tell you to simply ‘push’ or swing your foot more to the right? I think the same applies with golf – a golfer would only entertain missing the shot to the left or right for so long before a compensation came into play, conscious or not – and don’t forget two wrongs don’t make a right. Compensations are inconsistencies, which in this case are easily avoidable. But how far can the compensations go? You would be surprised. An incorrect face alignment at impact results in a stray shot. In an effort to ‘save’ the face angle a golfer can make many compensations, including: n Incorrect swing path n Incorrect swing plane n Poor weight movement n Loss of balance n Incorrect alignment n Poor grip

In fact, the list goes on – all because the initial aim was incorrect. Let’s go back to our first golf lesson, if our instructor asked us to aim our club 40 yards to the left we would surely question this, but what if we didn't know we were doing that? If your golf club has an incorrect lie angle that is what is happening – every time you play. Our golf club actually has two lie angles, Static and Dynamic. Static is what the lie angle is in the address position, Dynamic is at point of impact. For

me Dynamic is the more important but Static is not far behind – if there is a big difference between the Static and Dynamic angle, a swing problem could be brewing. For example, a golfer who addresses the ball with the toe of the golf club high in the air but then hits the toe of the club into the ground at impact has gained height throughout the swing. Another overlooked area of a poor lie angle is how it can effect a player’s ball striking. Generally, a golf club that is upright (toe up) will encourage a strike towards the toe of the club, whereas a flat club (toe down) will push the strike more towards the heel. One of the most important things in golf is centre striking, so how do you find the centre when the lie angle is incorrect? Simple – compensations. One of the most common questions I get asked is whether a golfer is good enough to benefit from custom fitting. This question is generally generated from new players who have just started the game and who are looking to establish their technique. My opinion is simple – every new golfer is a blank canvas so why would you start a golfer with an incorrect lie angle which then requires the player to develop a swing fault to make the ball fly straight. Golfers of all ages and abilities can benefit from golf clubs that fit them. A loft and lie check is a fairly simple job and can be carried out on your current equipment or on new clubs – in fact all new clubs should be set up for you on collection. No true professional leaves lie angles to chance, and in my opinion neither should you.

FUNCTIONAL

CARRYOVER W hen writing one of my golfers a programme, I look for “functional carryover”. Will the exercises i have prescribed directly improve his/her golf. Spinal rotation, bending, posture, flexibility, mobility, rotation and strength endurance are the key things I am looking at being in all my initial programmes. Spinal rotation for every aspect of golf, bending for a strong set up position/swing, posture again for all aspects of golf, flexibility/mobility for the best moment possible and strength/endurance because a typical golfing game is 4 hours long! Below are some of my favourite exercises with “functional carryover”; RUSSIAN TWIST ON SWISS BALL FOR GOLF (enter this exact title for YouTube) This exercise improves spinal rotation, strengthens the muscles involved in rotation, encourages hip/back dissociation, improves flexibility/mobility and when progressed can

really help strength endurance. I highly recommend you ask an exercise professional to show you this exercise or watch a video on YouTube to help get the technique just right. For “functional carryover” to golf instead of turning the head from one side to another as you move, keep the eyes to the ceiling ... you would never take the eyes off the ball in your swing!

BENT OVER ROW ON CABLE MACHINE (enter this exact title for YouTube) This exercise helps to strengthen “bending”. Something super important in golf for a good strong set up, swing and bending to pick up the ball without injury! Its very important when doing this exercise that you squeeze the shoulders back and down, relaxing the neck and pulling handle into the chest, elbows brushing the ribs. Again asking an exercise professional to help you with technique when in the gym is vital. For “functional carryover” to golf keep the positioning like the set up position, even place a ball in front of you and carry out the exercise in the “set up position”.

Any questions regarding this article or anything else please contact me ... I am more than happy to help. - 56- 56 - -

Arm-Lock Grip is a Diamond Product

H

elp is at hand from Diamond Golf International for golfers affected by the new ‘long putter ban’. The Sussex-based company is the sole distributor of the Arm-Lock Converter Grip, which replaces a regular grip on a belly, broomstick, or standard putter to accommodate a USGA conforming forearm anchor putting stroke. The Arm-Lock Golf Converter Grip turns any putter into a forearm-anchored putter and negates the de-lofting which occurs due to forward shaft press when the putter grip rests against the forearm. The bore in the grip, or shaft channel, is angled so that the shaft aligns with the forearm and increases the effective loft by 2-3 degrees. Said Daren Treacy from Diamond Golf: “This is very clever development and with many Pros no doubt being asked by their members for ways to combat the anchored putting stroke ban, it’s a great product.

“The main drawback to these putters is that they still put the player in an awkward position with an uncomfortable forward press at address – but the Arm-Lock Golf Converter Grip doesn’t.” The grips are best fitted using compressed air and trimming (for broom and belly putters) or extending (for standard length models) to roughly one inch below the forearm elbow crease is the only other modification required to an existing putter. The Arm-Lock Converter Grip can be used on either the left or right forearms and by either right or left handed players and was invented by Ed Klein, a stockbroker from Aberdeen, USA, and PGA club professional Ronnie Espedal. Founded in 1978, Diamond carries the widest range of golf club components, workshop items and training aids in Europe. It stocks over £750,000 of products at wholesale value and has a 4,000sq ft warehouse and office in West Sussex, with 12 employees focused entirely on delivering great services to golf professionals and the industry. www.diamondgolf.co.uk

Life Begins at Eighty

“Without increased putter loft the ball is driven into the putting surface, severely affecting the roll and intended line. But most current putters on the market adapted for this method are built with a loft of seven degrees in order to impart a proper roll.

he cup, first presented in 1910, is the first drawn competition of the year and as such draws a lot of interest from the members. After the rains during the week, the wet ground made the course play long and from the back markers the scoring reflected this. Only three players recorded nett scores under par, all of them from the afternoon tee-offs. Hills did not have the most promising of starts, ending his first nine with double bogeys. Starting the back nine with a birdie, he steadied his round to give him his first boarded competition win and earning a two shot cut in his playing handicap. Andy Smith (5) continued his early-season form to take second place from Ian Wigston (18) after a countback both returning nett 69s. In the conditions, Smith’s back nine was a joy to see with just three bogeys counterbalanced by two birdies to give him a one over par. Long term leaders from the morning starts and all returning nett 71s were Andy Totham (13) who chipped in on the 18th to get his nett 71, along with Stephen Bozier (12) and Stuart Holmes (11). - 60 -

Tarnia Robertson Celebrates One Year at the Helm of Ufford Park

T

arnia Robertson is celebrating her 1st Anniversary as Managing Director at Ufford Park Woodbridge Hotel, Golf and Spa. Tarnia assumed the role when her parents, Colin and Shirley Aldous, retired last year. Her first year has been a very busy one and real progress has been made in terms of modernising the hotel with the completion of the latest phase of bedroom refurbishment. Tarnia said: “The bedrooms are just part of what I have planned for the coming months and years, but our thinking in terms of the bedrooms was driven by our desire to meet our customers’ needs, and by a recognition that our customers stay with us for a variety of reasons. Sometimes their bedroom needs to be an ‘office’ space as well as a space for them to kick back and relax. We’ve ensured that the design in our newly decorated rooms works on both levels, and that guests have all the supporting features they need including additional plug sockets and USB ports to charge mobile phones, tablets and other technology.” One third of Ufford Park’s 90 bedrooms have now been extensively refurbished since December 2014 amounting to an investment by the hotel of over £220,000, and the latest phase, which began in January this year, involved the refurbishment of a further eight Classic bedrooms and two Superior bedrooms. Tarnia continued: “The response from our customers has been overwhelmingly positive, and we hope to be able to announce the beginning of phase four next January 2017 when we have plans to fully refurbish a further 27 more bedrooms and bathrooms this time. Over the next 6-8 months we also plan to continue slowly modernising our public areas too. So watch this space …..’’ Tarnia’s vision for the business also extends beyond the traditional areas it is known for. A planning application has recently been approved for a new adventure golf course to be constructed within Ufford Park’s grounds. The course, being created by Moore Adventure, is set to open in advance of the school summer holidays this year, and it is to be named Congo Rapids Lost World. It is the first of its kind planned within Suffolk. Tarnia said of the new attraction: “We are very

excited at the prospect of opening such a fabulous new family attraction within our grounds. It will make for a great day out and can be combined with our new Little Adventurers’ children’s menu which is now available in our dining areas all day. We hope that players will stay and enjoy something to eat or drink with us when they come. The course will also appeal to couples and other groups of friends of all ages. All our facilities are open to non-members so everyone is made welcome at Ufford Park.” Tarnia’s ambition to share Ufford Park with a new generation is clear, as well as her desire to continue providing the highest quality of customer service to its very loyal customers who have been coming back for many years.

Fairhaven Trophies Win for Lily May

E

nglish U14 girls’ champion Lily May Humphreys has scored her biggest win to date with an eight-shot victory in the girls’ event at the Fairhaven Trophies. Lily May, from Channels in Essex, was oneunder par in the 72-hole international championship for U18s at Fairhaven in Lancashire. The runner-up was Amelia Williamson (Royal Cromer) with Ireland’s Annabel Wilson in third place. The championship was played in challenging weather conditions with much rain and wind on the first and last days. “It was really special to win, it’s a really big tournament and I would never have thought I would win it,” said Lily May, who celebrated her 14th birthday last month and trains with an England Golf U16 regional squad.

included a magical spell of birdie, par, birdie, eagle. Her plan was to stay out of the fairway bunkers and go for the greens whenever possible and her tee shots served her well. “You couldn’t go forward from the fairway bunkers, you had to take your punishment and it was a guaranteed bogey. The greenside bunkers weren’t so punishing,” added Lily May. Lily May played for England in last season’s U16 girls’ match against Switzerland and already this season she’s been third in the U16 spring championship at Hawkstone Park and had top tens in two prestigious scratch women’s scratch events. Her next big target is the English U16 girls’ open championship at The Nottinghamshire in July. She is also an Essex ambassador for Girls Golf Rocks, the campaign jointly run by England Golf and the Golf Foundation to attract more girls into golf. The newcomers receive coaching opportunities and are encouraged and mentored by girls from county squads.

Stuart Levermore presenting the Levermore Claret Jug to Junior Captain Riley Faulkner.

“I just wanted to do well, but when I saw where I was after the first round, I thought I could try and win it. I was really happy with the way I played, I thought I was consistent and that my strategy worked.” She opened with two-over 77 – three off the lead – and went on to play the remaining three rounds in three-under par: 75 73 74.
