Sporting Nielsen in the Fast Lane for Europe D
aisy Nielsen of Denmark and France’s Melodie Bourdy produced a thrilling and tense end to the season’s Let Access Series at Stoke by Nayland Hotel Golf and Spa. Both girls ended the 54-hole WPGA International Challenge level on nine-under-par after completing the final round in two-under and a sudden death play-off was needed to separate them. Staged on the par three 18th in front of a packed gallery, both girls negotiated it in regulation at the first attempt. Bourdy followed suit at the second time of asking, despite leaving her tee shot short of the green and subsequent chip 10 feet shy of the hole. Nielsen, by contrast, had deposited her tee shot eight feet from the pin and she held her nerve to hole the putt and claim the €4,800 winner’s cheque. That represents the biggest prize of her short career but an even bigger one is the coveted Ladies European Tour card she earned courtesy of finishing third in the Order of Merit.
“It means so much to me,” she said. “It’s so nice to have got my card. It’s been amazing to have played on this tour this year. There have been 16 tournaments and they’ve been a great preparation for the Ladies European Tour.” Nielsen will be joined on the European Ladies Tour by the others who occupied the top five places in the Order of Merit.Three of them are Swedes – Order of Merit winner Emma Westin, Lina Boqvist, who finished fourth at Stoke by Nayland, and Isabella Ramsay.

G
overnment minister Vince Cable hasn’t endeared himself to the golfing community by suggesting the country’s housing crisis could be solved by building on golf courses. The Business Secretary’s comments came in relation to research by the London School of Economics that claimed more of Surrey is devoted to golf courses than housing with atotal of 103 courses in the county. While housing shortages are clearly important, PGA chief executive Sandy Jones has been quick to point out the economic benefits that golf brings to the community as reflected in a PGA commissioned study by SPORTS MARKETING SURVEYS INC which revealed golf has an annual €6.1 billion impact in Great Britain & Ireland and €15.1 billion across Europe with 180,000 employed across the industry. “Golf plays a significant role both in its economic impact and also in delivering social, behaviour and sporting benefits,” he said. “The 100 plus courses in Surrey generate hundreds of jobs across the community and millions of pounds of revenue so I don’t think the contribution golf makes tothe community should be underestimated.”

Champagne success for Benton Hall pair in the Daily Mail Foursomes in Scotland
F
rom an original entry of over 3,000 clubs, Benton Hall ladies Wendy Kirkby (h/cap 10 & Ladies Club Champion) and Hilary Malicka (h/cap 24) won through to the finals of the Daily Mail Amateur Foursomes Golf Tournament. The finals event was held at Marriott Dalmahoy Hotel & Country Club in Edinburgh from Sunday 12th to Tuesday 14th October 2014.
(eventual finalist of the competition) in wet and wild conditions. Whilst the game was very nip and tuck, sadly they eventually lost on the 18th (2 down). However, all 12 clubs not making it to the semi finals had one more game the Champagne Stableford Foursomes. This took place on the shorter West course at Dalmahoy, it's tight fairways and small greens demanded accuracy and was well suited to the Benton Hall pair. Both Wendy and Hilary were very focussed on the day and they were victorious with a very commendable 36 stableford points. The two players are pictured below with their well deserved magnums of Champagne and engraved glass bowls! Players and caddies have commended the Daily Mail for a very well organised event.
Left to Right: Hilary Malicka and Wendy Kirkby from Benton Hall Golf Club.
The long journey to the Daily Mail finals weekend began with victory in their club qualifying competition in September 2013. Having progressed to the knock-out rounds they went on to secure wins against Gosfield Lakes (H), Crondon Park (A), Forrester Park (H), Frinton (H), Fynn Valley (H), Stableford Abbotts (A) and finally Lamberhurst Golf Club, Kent (H).The seventh round victory at home to Lamberhurst G.C. guaranteed them a place in the finals event in Scotland which included the last sixteen, quarter finals, semi-finals and final. Wendy and Hilary arrived in Edinburgh together with their caddies (Sheila Mines & Nicola Thomas) also from Benton Hall, intent on enjoying the experience. Their first game was against South Staffordshire Golf Club where they secured a well deserved 3 & 1 win progressing them to the last 8. In the afternoon they faced Marriott Worsley GC, Manchester -8-

Basildon Golf Course Thriving Again O
ver the last 12 months there have been huge changes at Basildon Golf Course. The course had suffered from underinvestment and had been poorly maintained for the best part of a decade. Many thought it was beyond saving. Today the golf complex looks completely different. There have been many changes not least of which have been the numbers of staff working at the site. Stephen Swanson was appointed as head greenkeeper from the outset. Stephen has extensive experience having worked for Dave Thomas Golf Design for many years. He was happy to take the job, as it was close to his home and having toured across the world for many years it was a relief to be working in his own area. He explains: “As a young lad, I was given the task of planting hundreds of small saplings on the site. Many of them did not survive, but many more have grown to mature trees, which now make the course such a beautiful parkland setting. I remember the farmland before it became a course and played across the acres as a child.” Its not just the course that has had an upgrade, Basildon has just opened its new clubhouse extension, which allows for seating for up to 65 and lots more social fun after golf. Basildon Director, Colin Jenkins PGA explains: “Our priority has obviously been the golf course and we are very proud of all the work done to it. Having recently hosted the PGA East Anglian Open Championships, we know that the course can pass the highest test. We will seek to
continue to improve its conditioning all through the year and make it one of the best courses in Essex. With the new clubhouse extension, we can now offer groups of golfers the chance to socialise after their game – it has been very well received by our members who are enjoying the extra space after their game.We are delighted to be able hold all sorts of golf events at Basildon now that we have improved facilities that are capable of hosting such functions – our society business has gone through the roof recently.” For further details, please visit: www.basildongolfcourse.com Tel: 01268 533 532

New Drive to Inspire Women and Girl Golfers E
ngland Golf has launched a drive to attract more women and girls to play the game and join golf clubs. It’s being led by Lauren Spray, the new Women and Girls’ Participation Manager, who is herself a keen golfer and huge enthusiast for the game. “There are so many reasons to play golf,” said Lauren (pictured). “There are lots of health and fitness benefits, it’s something you can do with family and friends and you can enjoy the great outdoors on hundreds of different courses across the country.”
Lauren Spray.
The England Golf Strategic Plan 2014-17 aims to increase participation and club membership and it highlights the current state of the women’s game, showing that only 15 cent of the membership is female. This is in contrast to the average in Europe
where women and girls make up around 30 per cent of club membership. In addition, latest participation figures from Sport England show that 113,300 women and girls are regular, once-a-week golfers, compared with almost 600,000 men. England Golf will support clubs to attract more women into the game with a targeted programme to grow female participation and membership, which will be launched in 2015. Guidance on good practice will also be available to clubs. Support for junior girls will also form part of England Golf’s Club Junior Offer. Details will be available soon on the England Golf website. A Women and Girls’ Advisory Group is also being created to support Lauren’s work. This will include up to eight volunteers who will help to shape the content and delivery of women and girls’ activity. Applications are currently being invited and further details are available by clicking here. The closing date for applications is 31 October 2014. Lauren has a degree in golf management from Birmingham University and is working towards her Masters. She has been a member of the England Golf Partnership’s Youth Panel, which gives young golfers a voice in the development of the game, and now helps to lead it. Before taking on this role she worked for the Nottinghamshire Golf Partnership as the Get into golf officer and for the PGA as a regional coach development officer. She has played golf since she was about 12, has a scratch handicap and represents Nottinghamshire where she’s a member at Stanton on the Wold and at Notts Ladies’ – and is ladies’ champion at both. “I like to play golf both socially with my friends and to compete,” she said. “Golf is great because the handicap system means players of all different abilities can enjoy playing together.” www.englandgolf.org

Essex Schools Championships T
he Essex Schools Championships were held on 20th October at Langdon Hills Golf Club with 54 students taking part. A much smaller entry than in previous year but still having high quality players amongst the field. Some players found the pin position a little testing. Two students drove off in style both playing the front nine well. Jack Dyer had two bogies and a birdie being one over at the half way stage. Aaron Edwards-Hill had one bogie and a birdie and led Jack by a shot. The back nine proved to be the decider, Aaron had a bogie on the par 512th hole, Jack birdied the 12th and followed it with another on the short 13th giving him a 2 shot lead. The game was levelled out on the 17th where there was a two shot swing with Jack bogeying and Aaron making a 2. Jack Dyer walked away the eventual winner on Countback. The girls Champion was Harriet Lynch of Cooper Coborn who had an excellent round finishing on ahead of Lily Mae Humphreys. The course was in excellent condition thanks to Tony Dunston and his green keeping staff.

T
he Essex Professional season is now under way with sensational scoring and some very mixed weather. The season opening PGA Championships was due to be held at The Burstead Golf Club in the first week of October; the Pro-Am was very successful and details are shown below however the main event was hit by a deluge of rain making the Billericay course unplayable. The event has been rescheduled for Monday 10th November and will be played over 18 holes due to lack of daylight in November.
PGA Championships Pro-Am In the Pro-Am Mark Hooper of The Rayleigh Club made it a clean sweep. He shot an excellent 5 under par score of 66 to win the pro event by 3 shots from Jason Levermore of Channels Golf Club and by 4 from Chris Goddard from Romford Golf Club. Five birdies and an eagle around a very tight but beautifully presented Burstead course was a fine effort and has set his Essex season off to a great start after a successful campaign in East region this summer. He also combined with his team of Burstead members to win the Pro-Am event with a stableford score of 87 points. In second place in the team event
was Chris Goddard’s team with 83 points and there were four teams on 81 points with the team of Stephen Brooks from Upminster Golf Club taking third place on countback.
Overseas Pro-Am Strong winds and rain greeted the 14 teams who travelled to Royal Ostend for the first day of the PGA in Essex 2014 overseas Pro-Am. Fortunately the final two rounds at Damme Golf and Country Club and Royal Zoute were played under mainly blue skies and in pleasant temperatures. Despite the difficult first day conditions both John Judd and Steve Cipa managed very creditable rounds of level par 70 to lead the pro tournament by one shot from Jason Levermore. In the team event Chris Cutchie and his Colchester amateurs came in with 83 stableford points to open up a one shot lead. The second day saw big moves from Brett Taylor and Jason Levermore shooting scores of 67 and 68 respectively round a difficult layout at Damme with a very testing new nine which included some well-placed water hazards. John Fryatt moved into contention with a 69 setting up an exciting final

day. The second day also saw a big move in the team event with John Judd’s team of Thorndon Park amateurs putting together a best of the day 86 points. The final day of the tournament was played at Royal Zoute which is justifiably ranked in the top 10 courses in Europe.Taylor and Levermore went into the final day tied on 139; however Levemore continued his stellar season by shooting a fantastic 5 under par 67 to win the tournament by 7 shots. Taylor comfortably held on to second spot with Judd managing to secure third place by one shot from John Fryatt. James Jankowski from Essendon and Mark Allen from Eaton Golf Club tied for fifth place ensuring that the guests from outside the Essex PGA picked up some prize money. A massive move from Mark Baker’s team in the pro-am saw them challenge the eventual winners from Thorndon Park just coming up short by a single point. The team of John Judd, Blair Hunter, Nick Burr and Mike O’Dell therefore took the Pro-Am prize with a total of 249 points equivalent to 33 under par.
Colchester Pro-event An ace and seven birdies gave Jason Levermore from Channels Golf Club a new course record at Colchester and saw him win the event by 4 shots. He did it in style by firing a seven under par 63 with a hole in one on the 150 yard 16th hole. Not to be outdone, Sean Carter from Epping Golf Club followed the first ace 45 minutes later by holing his tee shot at the same hole. Aces are rare but to have two at the same hole in the space of less than an hour was enough to cause a small celebration in the clubhouse later. Joint second place was taken by Chase Davis of Stapleford Abbotts and Mark Talbott from Thorpe Hall who both shot three under par 67s to take the minor honours. Best trainee was James Webber of Three Rivers Golf Club with a score of 72.

Grip For Shot Type S
hort game and long game have two very different requirements, the short game requires a gently power source from the rotation of the body with no fast accelerated speed.Whilst the long game requires a fast accelerated speed from the angular catch up speed of the lever system. Picture 1 shows me playing a pitch shot that has very little hinge of the wrists, there as the club will be moving slowly, ideal for a pitch swing. Picture 2 a full driver swing shows much greater hinge, this is necessary for building angular catch up speed. For these two shots I grip the club very differently firstly for the pitch shot I place my hands on the grip with the thumbs aligned on the sides of

the handle, my palms are now more underneath the handle. Shown in Picture 3 and 4. This naturally inhibits the hinge in the wrists and encourages the body to make the movement in the swing. For the full shot my thumbs are either side of the top of the handle Picture 5 and the backs of my hands more on the top of the handle Picture 6. With my hands placed on the club in this fashion my wrists that are hinge joints are enabled to move and create hinge and angular catch up speed. LOFT GO... I
f you asked me five years ago regarding iron loft I would have told you that the reason that irons were going further was that all golf club designers were making the loft of irons stronger – basically turning a seven iron into a six iron etc. Although that was true then it is not now the case due to the advancement in club face materials and design characteristics. In fact looking back iron loft was always one of the more controversial components of iron design. So, is iron loft still a major design attribute? In my opinion it has dropped down the priority list and is now overshadowed by materials and head construction. After all, loft is only a number and it’s not the number you put on your scorecard. So, what’s changed? Mainly it’s the speed the ball comes off the face, lighter thinner faces have an almost ‘trampoline’ effect, harder materials help increase ball speed but the best part is they are consistently faster across the face – even on off centre strikes. As I write this one of the major golf companies are launching a marketing campaign based around ‘Love Your Mis-Hits’. This autumn will see face slots and hybrid technology come to irons for the first time, another big advancement in iron advancement.
Another aspect to the ‘then’ and ‘now’ of iron loft is that many moons ago long irons were standard issue, now many golfers would not even contemplate a three iron – so the hardest irons to hit have disappeared to clear the way for distance ‘combos’ of hybrids and irons. Does it really matter if a six hybrid rather than a six iron lands close to the hole? After all, it’s not cheating – it’s totally legal! Interestingly, I have recently tested some of the newer designs of irons and adjusted the heads to what is seen as more traditional lofts and due to the fact the ball came off the face faster the shots went much higher with a much weaker ball flight – the new ‘stronger’ iron lofts are necessary due to the increased ball speed. At the end of the day everything moves on, not always for the better, but in this case I think it's the way forward.

England U18 Match at Three Rivers Golf Club
S
arah Bennett Head Teaching Professional at Three Rivers Golf & Country Club held her first U18 England East regional match of the season. Sarah is heading into her second year as England Coach and is delighted how the coaching programme has been received by the new intake of Year 1 players. Sarah arranged for her U18 East regional squad to play against the Thames valley region in a strokeplay, match play format which proved a popular format. The matches were all very close, all continuing to the 18th hole with Thames Valley just victorious piping the East region by 2 ½ to 1 ½. The course was in superb condition with the players citing the greens as true rolling and quick which surprised some of the youngsters. The feedback from the match day was excellent with a return date already set for mid February to be played in the Thames valley area. The timing will present the players with a very different set of conditions at that time of year to contend with. The match element is an integral and vital part of the U18 coaching programme, with all players
being supplied with a statistical analysis programme which they use on a regular basis to discover their actual areas of improvement which can sometimes be deceiving. “These results and others are discussed at coaching sessions with a specific action plan implemented with each player in line with their performance plan. I then provide a variety of various technical, tactical and mental skills and drills to work upon. The physical element of the programme is a given and the golfers have a series of strength and conditioning warm up which they do prior to playing” Three Rivers course provided the players with a mix of shot shaping skills, short game scoring shots combined with driving accuracy with limited focus upon driving distance” I know that everyone learnt from the day and look forward to our next coaching session in a couple of weeks time. FROM DESPAIR TO W
hen I first met Maria Beautell, I had no idea who she was and what she had done previously as a golfer. For a little bit of information to you the reader, Maria had previously been on The Ladies European Tour and had won a tournament in South Africa. For 2013 she had a card for The LET Access Tour (the equivalent of The European Challenge Tour).
I met her on an extremely cold day in January 2013 and all the work we could do was in the Studio at The Essex and I was about to find out that her putting was at an all time low in confidence. We discussed how she felt about her putting and what plan of action I had in mind to help discover her confidence. Due to her having no confidence in putting I discussed the reasons behind why this was the case. If you have no confidence these are the reasons why; 1. Body Comfort Zone (the correct posture for you to putt your best). This also includes grip. 2. Correct Putter 3. Green Reading – I use Vector Green Reading 4. Mental Balance. You can only get mental balance if you have the previous three. Discussing this to Maria made a lot of sense to her and we made a start with Body Comfort Zone. During 2013, we did a lot of work together on various aspects including drills either at The Essex, Epping and at The LET Access event held at
Joy
Stoke By Nayland. She made great strides and her confidence was beginning to grow. During 2014 we have continued to improve the performance of her putting. Now, during July her clubs got lost in transit whilst visiting the UK. We decided to not go ahead with a planned lesson and do a session over Skype. During that lesson I could see issues with her grip and stroke and after an hour she felt very happy with the results of the session. She subsequently went on to win 2 tournaments The Spanish PGA and The Spanish Women’s Professional Championship. This shows the importance of modern technology and how I can give you a lesson via the Internet. Her success this year is played in 19 events made the cut in all (The 2 Spanish wins, 15 on The LET Access and 2 on the Ladies European Tour). Maria finished 9th in LET Access OOM. This December she is going to attempt for her full LET Tour card. You can see that Maria has come a long way and her performances have been enhanced by the fact that she can putt with confidence.

ifthteen finalists from the six BGL events held across the country throughout the season – covering an area from Nottingham to Bristol and across to Kent – battled it out in a closely fought final in the BGL Race to Burhill arranged in partnership with the Disabled Golf Association. Once again the New Course was the chosen course, despite undergoing some structural work to the bunkers being relined, was as ever in superb condition. Players were welcomed by Gill Fee.

Prizes were presented by David Woodward, Burhill’s General Manager, who spoke about BGL’s commitment to disabled golf – in 3rd place on countback, one of several with 33points was junior Bobby David; 2nd with 34points was Ben Bowen;

We have confidence in hosting an event for disabled and impaired golfers at any of BGL’s venues that not only will the quality of the golf be superb with a diversity of playing options, but everything about visiting a BGL venue makes the event run smoothly, from the welcome you get, choice of catering options and chance for our winners to take part in their Champion of Champion’s day. We appreciate this is down to the dedication and commitment of staff and the whole ethos at BGL. It’s always great to return to a venue and meet the same friendly faces.”

DISTANCE CONTROL IN PUTTING Once you are making a good stroke it is important that you start to develop the skill of controlling the distance of your putts. If the speed of the putt is good you will get the ball much closer to the hole which, if you don’t hole it, will make your next putt much easier. Distance control is especially important on putts between 20 to 40 feet and these are the ones you will have most and where most 3 putts come from. Rhythm and Length of Stroke Keep the image of a pendulum in your mind as this is a great image to have of the stroke that we are trying to make. Alternatively think of the swings at the park. Notice that this has a one-two rhythm with one being counted on the backward movement and two being counted on the forward movement. This pendulum motion is what we are trying to recreate in our putting strokes and is something that many good putters have in The correct rhythm of the stroke is onetheir stroke. The stroke will be even on both sides of the ball two with one being on the backswing and with the backswing being the same as follow through. two on the downswing. The same rhythm just change the length of stroke to control the distance The key principal for controlling the distance of your putts is to have the same rhythm on all of your strokes but to change the length of swing to hit the ball different distances. The physics of a pendulum are that the time taken for a stroke will be the same no matter what the length of the stroke is. So the rhythm will be same for stroke no matter what length of swing that you make in a one-two rhythm. The one is where you start your swing and two when you start the downswing.
This would be approximately a 10 foot putt.
Half Day Putting Schools
This would be approximately a 25 foot putt.
This would be approximately a 50 foot putt.

W
hen he was club captain in 1985, Jim Coker presented Woodford Golf Club with a cup to be played for by past captains. And in October, life member Jim, who now lives in Norfolk, was there hale and hearty, to hand over the Past Captains’ Cup to the 2014 winner, Mark Deeming, a retired police inspector. Jim is the only club member with a feature of the Epping Forest course named after him: Coker’s ridge, a long mound stretching across the uphill section of the fairway. It catches lots
of drives, especially in the winter, on this dogleg 483-yard hole. Deeming has now notched a hat-trick of wins, having previously won the cup in 2011 and last year. However, Nick Rowe, who completed a 3,500-mile cycle tour of the coast of mainland Britain in September, has won the cup five times and club President Roy Webb four times. Seventeen past captains, plus the current incumbent, Zekia Alsanjak, attended a dinner after the event.

TAME THAT
TENSION T
ension in any section of the golf swing can be really detrimental but can be avoided with a few simple keys and ideas that can provide you with an environment to play your best golf. Increased tension in our body has an adverse effect on the distance and direction of the golf ball within the long game. Feel is a critical component for a successful and consistent short game which is extremely difficult to achieve with any source tightness in our muscles in particular the finesse shots. Try These Few Tension Tip Reductions! Winter Warmers: With the cooler temperatures upon the horizon, it is vital to perform a simple warm up which I shall include in my subsequent articles. A round of golf takes on average 3 ½ – 4 hours so pre round preparation is key. It is important to ensure you have the appropriate clothing to cover all eventualities and weather conditions. If our body is cold then we will naturally tense up to retain body heat. This in itself will create unwanted tension in our upper body and shoulders. Try giving yourself
another 15 minutes to prepare for your game.We will be physically and mentally organised with our heart rate lowered. Grip Pressure: This is an area that can be overlooked especially if working on a recent grip change. If the handle is held too tightly this “tension” is transmitted from the hands to the arms into the shoulders and rest of the body which can lead to a number of swing issues.” Remember we control the club head, it does not control us” It is difficult to give a precise key figure for grip pressure as everyone is different but if you can imagine the pressure being 5/6 on a scale from 0-10 this is a general guide

Many golfers focus solely on technical thoughts as they prepare to hit the ball instead of concentrating on the primary objective of striking the ball to their chosen target. This process creates tension and can interrupt the “flow” of both our mind and swing. One way to lessen the anxiety is simply take a deep breath in and then exhale, there are various points when we can perform this during the round but can easily be introduced in a subtle way during our pre shot routine. Be aware the next time you feel rushed or under pressure and start to identify the difference and feel of relaxation and tension trying a few of the above which are applicable to your game.

Success For Richard R
ichard Withnall closed the Major Season by winning the Moy Cup at Colchester Golf Club. His round, book-ended by birdies on the first and eighteenth holes, had just the two bogeys, which gave him a gross par round from his five handicap. The Moy Cup is one of the clubs oldest competitions. First presented by a local coal merchant C T Moy in 1910. The winner then was also presented with a bag of coal, Withnall a regular in the Club’s Thornton Cup team, did not need this to light up his round, he was already on fire. Bogies on the 7th and 8th holes were the only smoke to cloud the issue. To start with a birdie is one thing but to finish with a birdie knowing he was likely to have a winning score of at least plus five in this bogey competition showed class. This birdie, however, was to prove crucial as hard on his heels were two players on scores of plus four. Stuart Watson (8) was awarded second spot after a countback from Duncan Stewart (10). On plus three were six competitors from the 21 in total who beat the course ton the day. Dick Bokenham (10) was the leader of the group from Adam Lock (8), James Cooke (17), David Drake (16), Keith Newnham (6) and last but not least Paul Nunny (12).

GOLF ETIQUETTE Some people may be asking, “Why would I need a book about correct conduct? I know how to behave myself.” Although integrity and fairness are an excellent basis, good manners alone are not enough in golf. A certain amount of specific knowledge is essential, especially in the light of the dangers involved in sport. Furthermore, golf also involves social conventions that are not based directly on accepted behaviour patterns. The etiquette is just as important as the rules of play and it ensures that all players can enjoy their game as much as possible. This book does not claim to cover every single issue but it does contain everything you need to know in order to be welcomed at virtually every course in the world. However, please bear in mind that the etiquette may very slightly from club to club. Therefore find out about the Local Rules in advance, follow all the instructions and heed the information on the notice boards. You will then be a welcome guest and playing partner on any course – irrespective of your ability level.

A month short of action as the fixture list dies down and the nights finally close in.
The Daily Telegraph Salver League Finals Despite a fairly empty fixture list there are still victories to report from one of the three League finals with County sides involved. The Men’s County side took on Hampshire at The Warren on 5th October and secured the Daily Telegraph Salver men’s title with a 6 ½ – 5 ½ victory over the Southern Region table leaders. Despite a strong morning foursomes showing, Essex leading 3 – 1, the afternoon singles saw the title within reach of both sides throughout play and it took some strong County resolve to ensure the Salver fell into Essex hands. After a successful season in their South Eastern league the County Colts side had been rewarded by reaching the Daily Telegraph Salver final for the second year running, played on 12th October at Hendon Golf Club and a repeat of the Men’s final draw – a bout against Hampshire. With the Colts side the defending Champions confidence was high and after closely contested morning foursomes saw Essex lead 2 ½ – 1 ½ all was left to play for. The start of the afternoon singles looked hopeful with the team up in 4 matches after 9 holes but, sensing a repeat of last years final defeat against Essex Hampshire piled on the pressure and Essex finished winning only 1 ½ points from a possible 8. As such a repeat of last years final was not forthcoming with the Colts side valiantly defeated by a strong Hampshire outfit 8 – 4.

The Mullis Trophy Traditionally the final competition of the season and last piece of silverware available to entering teams, The Mullis Trophy was first played for in 1931 and this years event saw 43 teams representing 32 clubs travel to Stapleford Abbotts on 5th October. A beautiful warm sunny day for 18 holes in a fourball betterball stableford format which provided some close results. Home members Alan Dyerson and Ian Moul used their local knowledge wisely, posting the winning score of 45 points to narrowly beat Mark Hibbitt and Matthew Wall from Thorpe Hall on countback. The Rayleigh Club’s Paul Williams and Adrian Hensby rounded off the top 3 with 44 points. EQUAL BUT NOT
THE SAME G
olf is now very much a sport played by both men and women, however, when it comes to conditioning, women are very much different. If you are a professional or are trying to be a professional female golfer seek yourself a good golf biomechanic, women are complex, the hormonal system can change how a women should stretch, train and eat. Throw in childbirth and that women is even more complex when it comes to conditioning and injury prevention. Hyper-mobility is a subject I will dedicate 1 whole article to as its a very important factor any trainer should be looking for in golf. I find it's much more common in females, I also find some trainers or golf conditioning specialists are still giving flexibility programmes to hyper-mobile clients. Hyper-mobility basically means very flexible, flexible muscles and joints, long and often weak muscles and generally injury prone. Some simple tests would be looking for "double jointed" joints, hyperextended knees which generally would come with painful knees and lastly a feeling of instability. Women especially I find need a lot more core and deep abdominal wall conditioning, not just because of pregnancy and childbirth but also because of hormonal fluctuations, the tummy muscles can switch on and off at different times of the month. It’s also important when training
Hip Thrust – highly recommend for women.
women to schedule practice days and heavy training away from the first day of the menstrual cycle, this day leaves women very vulnerable to injury and my advice would be to make this day a gentle exercise day if not a rest day. Of corse if there is a competition this is very different, every women should be just aware this is their more injury vulnerable day. Overall and my point in writing an article about women is to make female golfers aware that they are the more complex of the species and the right coach should be in place to prevent those niggling little injuries that can be avoided very easily.

ohn Williams is the new Club Captain. His election was confirmed by the membership at the recent AGM. The new Ladies Captain is Fiona Prentice with Mike Horley and Bella Angel confirmed as the new Veterans and Junior Captains respectively. John and Fiona started their year’s with the traditional Old vs New Captains Challenge match against a team captained by outgoing Club Captain Tim Moriarty and Ladies Captain Shelley Persent. Played in excellent spirit and in a greensomes format, the new captains’ team ran out winners 4.5 to 2.5.
Veterans Jack Halls winner George Shelmerdine with New Veterans Captain Michael Horley.
Hodson Trophy winners.
The team of Russell Storey, Sheila Dornan and Joe Jackson won the Hodson Trophy on Saturday. A fantastic turnout saw 10 teams of 3, including one man, one woman and a junior compete in a stableford format. The winning team’s total of 79 points was well clear of the second placed team of John Redden, Linda Freeman and Harry Hills who returned 74 points. The past captains’ team of Tim Moriarty, Shelley Persent and Tom Miller took third place with 71 points. Young Joe Jackson played particularly well for the winning team, scoring heavily on most of the holes that his score was counted. Monday also saw the playing of Junior Captains Day with Harry Hills producing a very creditable 43 points playing off a handicap of 9. Joe Jackson continued his good form taking second with 38 points and Bella Angel was third with 36 points. The culmination of the Veterans season was the Jack Halls Trophy, won by George Shelmerdine who blew the field away with 39 points. On a bright but chilly day the course played deceptively long and Shelmerdine was the only player to better his handicap. In second place was Michael O’Sullivan with 36 points. Countback decided
third place with Nick Dixon taking that with 35 points. The Club hosted an Essex PGA Professional and Low Amateur event which was won by Jason Levermore from Channels with a superb round of 63, breaking the previous professional course record of 64 held by Paul Curry. His round included a hole in one on the 16th. A fast start saw him 4 under through 7 holes and, although he only parred the par 5 9th, he birdied the 11th, 14th and 17th as well his hole in one to stand on the 18th tee 9 under. Unfortunately he made a bogey 5 but still finished 4 shots clear of Chase Davis and Mark Talbott who had 3 under par 67s.

SkyCaddie Touch B
rand-new for autumn 2014, Touch is the nextgeneration GPS rangefinder from SkyCaddie, boasting technology which the company claims makes the pre-loaded course maps on all other GPS devices obsolete. It is the new flagship product for golf’s mosttrusted distance measuring device brand. The main competitive advantage enjoyed by SkyCaddie Touch users is the ability to link via Bluetooth to the free SkyGolf 360 app on their phone, to instantly download the very latest golf course maps to their Touch before each game. In other words, SkyCaddie Touch users know that they are always using the newest golf course maps on the market. In a UK launch promotion, every SkyCaddie Touch is bundled with a free box of Bridgestone B330-RX golf balls (1 doz). Product highlights also include new, onDemand Vivid HD course graphics, and a brilliant colour ‘glove-friendly’ touch-screen, alongside a huge features-set which gives golfers the ultimate ability to use SkyCaddie’s giant and exclusive golf course information database to plot their way around a golf course. “It works when lasers go blind” says the company, indicating that Touch is aimed at serious, competitive golfers. If you’ve ever tried to laser to a green target on an uphill hole, or from behind a tree, you’re at a disadvantage to anyone with a SkyCaddie. The wealth of information provided instantly by SkyCaddie TOUCH (up to 40 target points per hole) gives serious golfers both speed and performance advantages over laser users, with zero blind spots. With 100s of exclusive TrueGround Targets per course, the Touch contains a staggering amount of
golf course data, all produced by SkyCaddie’s revolutionary ground-mapping process. The company creates and regularly corrects each golf course map on foot using professional GPS surveying equipment, and each year updates over 300 golf course maps in the UK alone – such is the speed of change. Only SkyCaddie maps golf courses this extensively. Pre-loaded with SkyCaddie’s 35,000 exclusive error-corrected global golf course maps, including 99% coverage of UK golf courses, the Touch offers glove-friendly touch-sensitive navigation with a high-resolution, sunlight-readable, glare-resistant colour HD display. In-play features such as Dynamic RangeVue and Interactive HoleVue with Precision Zoom enable golfers to closely examine yardages throughout the hole, and to set their own target points including quick layups. When Touch users are shooting for the green, SkyCaddie’s patented IntelliGreen technology gives them comprehensive, dynamic green information from their angle of attack. With SkyCaddie mappers having walked the circumference of every green, only SkyCaddie users have such accurate data about their allimportant approach shot. The Touch also showcases SkyCaddie’s new onDemand Vivid HD graphics, inspired by Tour yardage books, giving incredible visual detail for each hole. SkyCaddie Touch users pay an additional annual membership fee, to access a variety of Tour Feature Plans giving up-to-the-minute updates for golf course maps on a UK-wide or Global basis. With Hands-Free Automation including Rotating Auto-View, Digital Scorecard and Stat Tracking, the ability to store up to 20 rounds’ data between syncs, Shot Distance Measurement and Pace-of-Play Timer, the SkyCaddie Touch is the ultimate GPS rangefinder for all serious golfers.

The Jubilee Cup
Update from Jubilee Cup Committee, sponsored by Seabrook Warehousing, and reported by Chairman Phil Redhead
Well Done to Warley Park who are the 2014 Jubilee Cup CHAMPIONS!
I
n glorious sunshine at Brentwood Golf Club, we held the Final of the 2014 Jubilee Cup between Channels and Warley Park, and in a hotly contested match, Warley Park defeated Channels 5.5 to 3.5 points over the Ryder Cup weekend. This was the culmination of the a 2014 run which saw nearly 900 Essex club players participating in a mid-handicap inter-club competition – what a pleasure that is for us as a Committee. Thank you teams! In addition we also saw the deciders for this year’s Order of Merit competition. In the Singles, some excellent scores have been seen this seasons with Thorpe Halls Mario di Capite only just being “pipped at the post” by Spencer Bond from PlayGolf Colchester who won five out of his five matches played. And in the pairs OOM, the results went right down to the wire at the final with the dynamic duo from Channels, Stuart “Dennis” Waterman and Paul Thompson BOTH taking the Runner Up
position, despite a Herculean effort in the Final at Brentwood. This left John Shade from Stock Brook Manor, again with a full scoring of 5 points out of 5 matches, to become our Order of Merit winner for 2014. I cannot begin to tell you the wave of congratulations, and thanks, that I received on the QUARTER FINAL TO BE PLAYED BY 3RD AUGUST 2014

course, during the prize giving, from players and spectators, and also from other participant captains for the Jubilee Committee for being able to delivery such a great competition to Essex clubs in 2015 – and we look to improve and develop even more in 2015! And the spirit of the Jubilee Cup really showed through as the captains were telling me they had been contacted by past opponents to wish them luck in the final! For Warley to become 2014 Champions it took a lot of hard effort on both sides on the day, on an immaculate course at The Brentwood, under the guidance of Mike Seabrook and Russell Phillips at the club. For the majority of the time, whilst the Ryder Cup played out in Gleneagles, the end result hovered on the edge and could have very easily gone either way with early/first blood going to both teams with 4&2 victories from Channels’ Dan O’Connell and Warleys Richard Butler. There was only one halved match between the Channels pairs Craig Fletcher and Alan Dillon playing Warley’s Peter Burgess and Ivan North. The remainder were outright wins

of not significant scoring showing the closeness of the match. However, Lee Wilkinson’s Channels team finally succumbed to John Williams’ Warley Park which was in effect a “local derby” with both clubs connected by management and history. As Chairman, I would like to thank Russell and Mike, and their course team at The Brentwood for presenting us with a wonderful final venue golf course. Special thanks also go to excellent support for Sue Phillips and her food & beverage team who presented a great spread for us all day. In addition to the willing volunteers and support from Club Captain Terry Longman and rules official Bill Nash. In addition, the continued support of Seabrook Warehousing in 2014 has allowed us to deliver an even better competition as we go from strength to strength. I would like to say thank you to all of you for your contribution in 2014! We are already receiving in the entry forms for the 2015 competition and we should be growing by at least two new clubs this year with Top Meadow and Brentwood joining the ranks for next year. Download the form and return back to me, confirming your 2015 entry, at the following link http://www.jubileecup.com/entryform2015.pdf My thanks to all our participants, Committee members, host venues and helpers for a GREAT 2014. Roll on 2015! Best regards Phil

Colchester Four Times Winners
Golf Well-Placed to Tackle Issue of Loneliness
F
or the third time in four years Colchester Golf Club has provided the winning team in The East Region PGA Captains’ Day. Led by Mark Baker, and this year comprising Paul Nunny (an East Region PGA Patron), Tim Rogers and Ali Macnaught, the Colchester four returned an impressive twelve under par at the Bishop Stortford headquarters of the PGA. There were no histrionics and it was sound golf which earned them their victory in this competition. Baker also came fifth in the Pro’s competition which was won by David Sailsbury of Three Rivers Golf Club. His score of 63 was impressive. He was eight under par and six shots clear of the rest of the field.
Paul Hetherington (East Region PGA Captain) with Tim Rogers, Ali Macnaught, Paul Nunny and Mark Baker.
The men’s section at the Braiswick club are now settling into their winter leagues but the ladies are still playing individual competitions and their medal Winners Cup was won by the ever improving Bev Parker. From her 28 handicap her round of nett 72 just squeezed her ahead of Joan Cotterill (26) who had a nett 73, Third spot was taken by Sheena Nunny (17) who with her nett 76 was just one shot ahead of Jane Madge (23) and Shelley Persent (20) both returning nett 77s. A Vets Stableford saw Tim Rogers (9) take the money with 38 points. Don Laughlin (20) came in second with Graham Caughey (17). The Walkon-Stableford produced the best nett score of the week with Paul Harrison (19) returning 41 points. Geoff Lawrenson (15) and Phil Davis (22) both had nett 40s.
P
GA chief executive Sandy Jones believes golf can help tackle the issue of loneliness which is blighting the lives of many elderly people in the UK. And with the issue hitting national headlines in recent days Jones has suggested golf clubs should even receive a grant to save government spending on trying to solve the problem. BBC 5Live devoted its morning talk show ‘Your Call’ to the subject on Tuesday which was on the back of an interview with 93-year-old Bob Lowe from Hampshire who lost his wife three years ago which sparked a widespread reaction from listeners. An increasing number of men are facing loneliness and isolation in their old age with the charity Independent Age and the International Longevity Centre reporting that the number of older men living on their own is expected to increase by 65 per cent in the next 16 years. “Loneliness is a big problem for many people in Britain today,” said Jones. “It affects so many people. It’s a big issue when a lost husband or wife is left alone in the home with no social contacts I can relate when so many golf club members have lost a partner and the golf club becomes their social hub. And I was thinking that may be there should be a government grant for this. “We could save them from spending money on solving loneliness and golf clubs should get grants because we actually do that. I’m not sure that there are many other sports where you can participate so actively beyond the age of 55 and 65 – certainly not football and rugby – and the social aspect of being part of a golf club also helps ward off loneliness.” Golf has made great strides to make the sport more accessible to all members of society, irrespective of age and ability with various initiatives through the England Golf Partnership comprising The PGA, England Golf, Golf Foundation and Sport England. Through the EGP’s Get into golf campaign and county golf partnerships, many clubs run a range of taster and beginner sessions, often at little or no cost, providing an ideal platform for anyone interested in taking up the sport or just going along to meet other people and to give it a golf. www.pga.info

Host Lady Captain Linda Dundon welcomed over 50 ladies to Playgolf Colchester in the morning, and everyone took to the course on three tees from noon. Although some rain and thunderstorms had been forecasted, the day turned out to be hot and very humid. Irish Teenager’s 360-Yard Albatross is the Longest Hole-in-One Yet
M
ore than 4,000 golfers have so far received an exclusive BOSS watch for holing an ace during a club competition, but Buncrana’s Kyle Mccarron has claimed the longest hole-in-one to date – on a monster 360-yard par-four. Big-hitter McCarron, 18, from Buncrana, accomplished the astonishing feat with his driver on the second at his club, North West, while playing for the Eamon MacManus Presidents Prize. And the scratch golfer ought to have perfect timing both on and off the golf course after being rewarded with membership of the exclusive BOSS Watches H1 Club and a specially-commissioned, commemorative timepiece.
But it was the fact that McCarron’s albatross – or doubleeagle as it’s referred to on the US tours – was not only scored on such a long hole but also the longest yet that raises the achievement above those of the vast majority of BOSS Watches H1 Club members. He said: “This is my first hole-inone and I’m very pleased. I have been playing golf for six years and I practise every day.” McCarron is currently attending Maynooth University College in Kildare after being honoured with the Paddy Harrington Golf Scholarship and his golfing diligence is paying off as he follows the footsteps of Rory McIlroy, recently being crowned the Ulster Youth Golf champion.

ING announce that nFlight Motion is now available for clubfitters in Europe as an easyto-use, highly-accurate fitting tool which recommends PING driver-fitting specifications for golfers after only three shots. “With nFlight Motion, fitters can perform a precise PING fitting in a timely manner using a few key swing variables that make the process easy and extremely reliable,” said John A. Solheim, PING Chairman & CEO. “It’s simple to set up and operate. In only a few minutes, fitters can recommend the best loft and shaft for various PING driver models. It gives fitters one more innovative tool for growing their business and helping golfers play better and enjoy the game more.” Using proprietary PING software in conjunction with a SkyPro Golf Swing Analyzer, nFlight Motion graphically depicts fitting recommendations on an iPhone or iPod touch. The SkyPro device attaches to the shaft directly below the grip and records a range of swing variables, including clubhead speed, transition, and shaft lean at impact, which are analysed through the nFlight Motion software to make loft, shaft flex and shaft model recommendations. After an initial recommendation for loft and shaft, fitters can use PING’s Shaft Visualisation Chart to consider additional shafts from PING and other manufacturers. “SkyPro’s swing analyser is a highly-accurate device that allows us to bring our nFlight software into a wireless fitting environment. It is easy-touse and produces the reliable data needed to make precise custom fitting recommendations in a short amount of time,” said Dr. Paul Wood, PING’s Director of Engineering. “This first-of-itskind fitting software, created by PING engineers and software developers, gives us one more way to ensure that golfers receive the most accurate fittings in golf. www.golfskypro.com

Titleist Introduces New 915 Fairways and Hybrids
Green Sleeve Aims To Clean Up In The UK Market
N
T
ew Titleist 915 fairway metals and hybrids, designed using new Active Recoil Channel technology to produce lower spin and higher speed, delivering longer distance with exceptional forgiveness from both the tee and turf. The fastest fairway and hybrid designs Titleist has ever developed, the new 915F, 915Fd, 915H and 915Hd models significantly increase distance for serious golfers of all swing speeds while maintaining high MOI for forgiveness. Available in golf shops worldwide beginning the 14th of November, Titleist 915 fairways and hybrids provide improved performance through three key advancements: • The proprietary Active Recoil Channel, a long, deep, forward-positioned sole channel that actively flexes at impact to launch the ball off the face with higher speed and lower spin; • An Ultra-Thin Face, a high-strength, uniformly thin high-speed face insert that increases ball speed across the face; and • A precise, high-MOI design with a low centre of gravity (CG) location that delivers stability and forgiveness by preserving ball speed across the face for more distance, more often. Those technologies, combined with the fitting precision of Titleist’s industry-leading SureFit Tour hosel and tour-validated looks, sound and feel, make for the most complete, consistent metals performance in the game. www.titleist.co.uk
he Green Sleeve, a unique pocket-sized golf ball and iron cleaner already wowing golfers in the USA, has now launched in the UK. The Golf Show at Harrogate, where the product was formally unveiled to the UK golf market, marked Green Sleeve’s official debut on these shores. That means British golfers and retailers will discover what their American counterparts already know: the Green Sleeve is both an easyto-sell, revenue-generating accessory in the pro shop and a product that can change a golfers’ game from tee-to-green – and even help improve their scores. “Most amateur players lose the majority of their shots on the greens but I noticed that all the better golfers I played with made sure their ball was absolutely spotless when they came to putt,” says owner and inventor Oliver Nimenko. “I decided to follow their example, and I immediately noticed that my ball was running truer, and that I was making more putts. By simply making sure I built cleaning my ball into my preshot routine, I found that my short game improved, because I was taking great care, attention and time over my short game. www.greensleevegolf.com

Breaking Down Golfing Barriers
E
ngland Golf is working with cultural groups to find ways to broaden the appeal of the game among black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) communities. Relationships are being developed with organisations such as Sporting Equals, which promotes ethnic diversity across sport, and the Muslim Women’s Sports Foundation.
Get into golf is designed to inspire adults across England to take up golf. It offers affordable coaching for beginners and returners to golf and all sessions are run by PGA professionals. Equipment is provided so participants simply book through the Get into golf online system and turn up on the day in comfortable clothing. To find out more visit www.getintogolf.org Arun Kang, the chief executive of Sporting Equals commented: “Sporting Equals is delighted to be working with England Golf to open up the sport to black and minority ethnic communities. An important part of England Golf’s strategic plan ‘Raising Our Game’ is to increase participation and break down barriers. Rimla Akhtar, Chair of the Muslim Women’s Sports Foundation, added: “The MWSF is really pleased to have supported England Golf have a presence at the 2014 London Mela. We know England Golf are looking to increase the diversity of the sport and this is one important step they have taken towards connecting with the BAME community so we hope to see our community engage in this great sport.” www.englandgolf.org
As a result, the Surrey and Middlesex County Golf Partnerships set up a Get into golf stand at the recent London Mela cultural festival – and took the opportunity to canvass views and opinions among the visitors. The BAME communities account for only a tiny proportion of regular golfers and the CGPs were seeking information about ways to make the game more attractive to them. Andy Willems, the England Golf’s Senior Regional Manager, said: “London Mela is a huge festival which attracts about 80,000 people and gave us a great opportunity to do research. The vast majority of people we spoke to had never played golf but would be willing to learn, particularly in an informal, social setting. “We want to promote golf to these communities in a way they find appealing and to let them know that golf is a welcoming and inclusive game.” The England Golf Strategic Plan 2014-17, ‘Raising Our Game’ identifies aims which include increasing the number of regular golfers and removing barriers to participation. Richard Flint, the England Golf Participation and Club Support Director, remarked: “We want to broaden the appeal of golf to attract people from different backgrounds in local communities. - 60 -

T
he time was right for a South Woodham Ferrers golfer when he scored a hole-in-one during a recent club competition to be rewarded with a limited-edition BOSS watch as recognition for the achievement.
John Musson, 72, scored his ace on the 100yard, par-three 15th at his club, Three Rivers Golf & Country Club, and the 15-handicapper was rewarded with membership of the exclusive BOSS Watches H1 Club and a speciallycommissioned, commemorative timepiece. The luxury German brand has once again pledged to reward club golfers with an exclusive watch for every hole-in-one recorded during a club competition in 2014 after giving away £600,000-worth of limited-edition mementos in 2013 – and Musson is among the latest to achieve the feat this year. The scheme is open to any golfer whose club uses HowDidiDo – a free-to-use, web-based social network for golfers – and anybody playing in official club competitions is eligible. Currently, more than 1,800 clubs use the website. www.bosswatches.co.uk
