Hybrid Putter is Heaven Sent

A

putter invented by a golf pro with a knack for designing clubs and practice aids that make the game easier is creating a storm of interest before it has gone into full-scale production. Stuart Smith, a PGA Professional from East Anglia, has designed a putter based on his bestselling Heavenly Hybrid range of clubs. And such has been the positive effect the prototype the club has had when used by clients in his coaching clinics, Smith is already taking orders. The putter known as HH1 features the head used in the Heavenly Hybrid range and has a loft of 3°. As a result, the club is significantly lighter than conventional putters and boasts a much bigger sweet spot. Explaining how he came up with the idea, Smith said: “I looked at putters on the market and felt they were all very heavy. What’s more, I wasn’t sure how forgiving they were. “Using a hybrid head as opposed to one made from a solid chunk of metal means mine is much lighter. As a result, the ball comes off the head a lot faster and a shorter stroke is needed,

“And because it’s got the hybrid head, the sweet spot is huge. It’s probably the most forgiving putter there is, which is great for people who don’t hit the ball in the middle. “The feel you get from the putter is excellent and the feedback from people who have used it in lessons has been superb. I’ve had more than 50 pre-orders already. “People like the idea of it and the fact it’s so light means, they’ve got much control over the club than they would have with a conventional putter.” The latter are proving particularly popular with more senior golfers, and Smith explained: “Older golfers have more time on their hands to play the game, and many have the cash to be able to afford it. “Hybrid clubs have made all my customers enjoy the game more – which is how things should be. Golf should be fun not a trial. “I’m sure the putter will do exactly the same thing, although I’m confident it will be used by all standards and ages of golfer rather than older ones.”

COMPETITION Stuart Smith together with Essex Golfer Magazine has given you a chance to win a Hybrid Putter of your own. For your chance to win this wonderful prize all you have to is answer the following question. What year did Darren Clarke win the British Open Golf Championship? Email your answer, aswell your name and address to info@essexgolfer.com

Stuart Smith with HH1.

Launch, Spin&Landing Angle

T H E T H R E E M AG I C I N G R E D I E N T S TO L O N G E R D R I V E S

I

n a world where most golfers believe that more speed equals more distance this month I thought I would look at three often overlooked elements of good golf shots. Believe it or not it is possible to have two golfers with exactly the same club head speed and smash factor (quality of strike) but have up to 40 yards between their tee shots. This comes down to their flight conditions: Launch, Spin and Landing Angle. Each element is exclusive to the individual golfers speed and swing dynamic but let’s look at each area in a little more detail. LAUNCH This is the angle the ball leaves the club face vertically. Generally the lower the swing speed the higher the launch required. This idea is not exclusive to golf, it’s physics. A good demonstration for this is to throw a tennis ball as far as you can over-arm. Then, try to throw another ball the same distance but this time the ball cannot fly higher than your knee - a lot more speed is required to keep the ball in the air and will normally fall short of the other ball but roll out. Golf works in exactly the same way. For longer shots the ball needs to arc parabolically, and launch is the first ingredient of that. SPIN All shots we hit have backspin, it is a common myth that longer drives have ‘top spin’. This is physically impossible as a golf ball with top spin would hit the ground a yard or two in front of the player. It’s backspin that generates lift as the air moves around the golf ball. Another common myth is that hitting the ball high is bad, that’s because in general golfers hit the ball high because they have too much spin. A shot hit with the right spin can fly extremely high and

go a very long way. Many of the longest hitters playing professional tours now hit the ball well over 100 feet in the air off the tee. For comparison the average club golfer will driver the ball around 60 to 70 feet in the air. Too much spin and the ball will have a weak flight and seem to ‘stall’ or ‘hang’ in it’s flight, too little and the ball ‘fall’ from the air. LANDING ANGLE This is where club golfers can really gain yardage. Having the right amount of spin on the drive equals a good landing angle. This angle is a combination of maximum carry with maximum roll. A good landing angle is around 34° and golfers should strive to get as close to this as possible to maximise distance. Another interesting element here is that physics tells us that with no wind a golfer with a 90mph swing speed can only carry the ball 215yds but with the correct launch conditions can roll out to 240yds. The screenshot is from a golfer currently playing on the European Tour. As you can see the better driver launches the ball a fraction higher and has a little less spin which in turn equals a slightly flatter landing angle. This picks up 2 yds carry and 6 yds roll which may not seem much but it’s the difference between carrying a bunker or not.

Movember Campaign Aims to Get the Nation Moving M

o Bros’ and ‘Mo Sistas’ are being encouraged to get up and MOVE in the latest fundraising initiative from the Movember Foundation. The global charity, made famous by its campaign to get men growing moustaches during November, is teaming up with The PGA and the Organisation of Golf Range Owners (OGRO) in a bid to tackle physical inactivity across the UK. Every Monday in November, floodlit driving ranges across the UK are ‘going clubbing’ for Movember Mondays, part of the Foundation’s MOVE initiative to raise funds, awareness, and get people moving. The centres will all host weekly events to encourage new and existing golfers to discover the health and social benefits that swinging a golf club with their mates can bring. Alongside free hints, tips, and beginner sessions, visitors at each venue will also have the chance to ‘chip for change’ and win Movember merchandise as well as a place at next year’s Movember Golf Day, to be held at four-time Ryder Cup venue The Belfry. As well as Movember Mondays, golfers in general are being encouraged to host their own golf days in support of Movember, and to register these as an official event on Movember.com. Societies and clubs can request an event pack to help them run their day by contacting Movember directly at info.uk@movember.com. The highest fundraisers, and of course the best Mo’s, will also win a place at the golf day next April.

Lastly, The PGA is encouraging all of its pros to help raise awareness of this great cause by showing off their best trick shots on social media using the hashtags #mogolf and of course #movember. Movember Mondays will form part of a wider battle to tackle the growing trend of male physical inactivity. According to the Movember Foundation, physical inactivity is now the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality, causing 3.2 million deaths globally. Since 2003 the Movember Foundation has encouraged over five million men and women to join the global men’s health movement and has now taken up the fight against the growing issue of inactivity, aiming to invest in programmes to work out what makes men move more and target those at most risk. It has raised over £402 million and funded over 1,000 programmes focusing on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity. Movember Foundation uk movember.com

Essex County News by Neil Silver, Press Officer, Essex Golf Union email: info@essexgolfer.com www.essexgolfunion.org

Our golfing season is now over for this year, but as this one finishes we are getting ready for 2016. All major fixture dates are on our website and will be updated regularly over the coming months.

ESSEX FOURSOMES The Essex Foursomes was first played in 1932 at Rochford Hundred Golf Club and the beautiful silver tankards were presented by Mr G E Larman. Up until 1967 it was a 36 hole knockout competition, from 1968 it was changed to a medal competition format. A total of 32 teams, representing 21 Clubs, started the morning round of this competition, on a bright late summer morning. The morning round finished with The Rayleigh Club taking the lead, Ricky Lee and Jay Beisser coming in with a gross score of 68 and Taylor Carter and Jack Dyer ESF Winners 2015. from Rochford Hundred 4 shots back with a 72. The afternoon round saw The Rayleigh Club score a gross 71, which made them this year’s winners with a total of 139. Rochford Hundred kept their second place with a total gross of 144. Baildon's James Dennison and John Wright were just pipped to the post with a gross 145 and third place.

MULLIS TROPHY The Mullis Trophy was first played for in 1931, and is traditionally the final competition of the season. It was a beautiful warm sunny day, as 38 teams representing 29 Clubs set off to pay 18 holes in a fourball betterball stableford format. The results were very close with Paul Hegarty and Alex Gray from Burnham on Crouch coming in with a winning score of 43 points just beating Mark Pidgeley and Matt Barnett from Playgolf Colchester who scored 42 stableford points. The Essex’s John Booth and Karl Bowden came in third with 41 Points on countback. It was a most enjoyable day with good golf played in great spirits. Paul Hegarty and Alex Grey. - 36 -

YOUTH SHIELD Forty one clubs entered the Youth Shield in 2015, we lost a couple along the way but the majority battled through several zonal matches. The winners of each of the zones will each receive a memento of their success this year. The Quarter and Semi-Finals having been played, we arrived at Boyce Hill on the 26 September with the finalists, Chelmsford and Orsett. It was a closely fought match that ended with an exciting finish. Zachary Chegwidden (Orsett) and Michael Gilbert (Chelmsford) were all square at the 18th and went on to play an extra 5 holes before Zachary won the match and made Orsett the winners for 2015. It was a great match played in great spirits, our congratulations to Orsett. Orsett. The Youth Shield was first played for back in 1951 and this was the first win for Orsett.

PLATE FINALS

The Plate Finals were played at Crondon Park on Sunday 11 October 2015 and the winners were West Essex (Thornton Cup) and Thorndon Park (Leslie Wood). Details and results are on the website. - 37 -

COUNTY TEAM SE League Finals Essex played Kent Golf Union in the England Golf South Eastern League Final at the magnificent Broadstone in Poole, Dorset. The Course rated 46th in England was in excellent condition with a proliferation of heather, gorse, water hazards and cavernous bunkers to negotiate which proved to be a stern test for both teams in ideal golfing conditions. Essex having qualified for the league final with a match in hand, were forced to make four changes to the team, which would test the strength in depth of our resources. Traditionally Essex have been strong in the morning foursomes but on this occasion were not able maintain this going down 3 matches to 1 at lunch despite an outstanding performance from the Boyce Hill pair of Alex Woodward & John Hanrahan who won their match 5&4.

For a long time it looked as if the foursomes would finish 2-2, however Essex surrendered a 2UP early advantage in the last match, going down 3&1. So Essex had a mountain to climb for the afternoon singles session and came out highly motivated with outstanding performances in the first two matches. Mitchel Sarling & Jay Beisser producing 5&4 wins, with Jay producing an eagle 3 on the first hole to show his intent. The next two matches were won by Kent but with both Essex players under par for their rounds, illustrating the quality of golf displayed by both sides. The result was in the balance for most of the afternoon thanks to an outstanding 4&3 win from under 18 player Jack Dyer who demonstrated a maturity above his years in defeating Kent’s very experienced George Mullins. Essex rallied well in the afternoon session but sadly had left too much work to be done after the disappointing morning foursomes. The very strong Kent team deserved their win but Essex demonstrated a fantastic team spirit and fighting commitment which, coupled with the young talent coming through, will set them in good stead for the future. Essex were delighted to have our County Team Sponsor Clarkson’s Shipbroking (Switzerland) in attendance and would formally thank them for their very generous kit and Bushsnell range finder sponsorship which the County Union, Players and Officials are most appreciative of. - 38 -

COLTS TEAM SE League Finals

For the second year running the Colts League final was contested by Essex and Hampshire. The venue this time, Rowlands Castle Golf Club in Havant, Hampshire, their home advantage. Our first practice session got off to a great start with a Hole in One from Scott Hudson on the second hole. On match day the weather was set fair with the golf course in excellent condition along with fast undulating greens. The greens staff had been out early to double cut and iron the greens. The morning foursomes got off to a good start with our first pair bringing in an early 3&1 win. Things were then to seesaw. Our second pair were beaten 3&2, our third pair won 2&1 and the last pair lost 5&3. This rounded off the morning with a 2-2 draw, giving neither side an advantage for the afternoon. With the afternoon singles under way early scenarios had some players struggling against strong opposition and others just keeping their head above water. At the half way point we were up in three games. Then two games finished early and the remaining games were ebbing and flowing. Gradually games two to four put three points on the board with the remaining three games all down. As time went on the advantage began to swing in our favour and when games six and seven finished all square, the four points required to halve the match were secured. Singles 4-4. Match 66. The trophy will be held by each County for 6 months.

LOOKING FORWARD Have you applied for your Inter County Card, if you are a member of an Essex affiliated club for just ÂŁ15 a year you can play discounted golf at over 1300 clubs in 33 Counties. The application form and details are on our website. You can save your ÂŁ15 the first time you play ... silly not to have one. - 39 -

New Lower Fees at Royal Epping Forest Golf Club

A

t their Annual General Meeting on Friday 2nd October members of Royal Epping Forest Golf Club voted to lower annual fees for 23-30 year olds to ÂŁ200. The Chingford course with its proximity to road and rail links to London and its position on the edge of Epping Forest is popular with younger players. The lounge and terrace at Royal Epping overlook the 18th green with views across the course and the forest and is a welcome resting place after a game. The new lower fee is aimed at encouraging younger players to become part of a golf club and enjoy the golfing and social facilities membership offers. Junior fees apply up to age 23 years. The new Captain and Lady Captain for the year 2015/16, Ray Kelly and Jill Crafer, were voted in at the AGM and had their Drive-In on Sunday 4th October. The sun shone as the Past Captains putted out and the New Captains made excellent drives with the hickory club used for the occasion

– a different feel to their own drivers! There was a good turnout to support them on their special day and members and guests enjoyed the jazz band and refreshments.

Jubilee Cup Update from Jubilee Cup Committee, sponsored by Seabrook Warehousing, and reported by Chairman Phil Redhead

The Bentley Golf Club are the 2015 Jubilee Cup Champions!

O

n Sunday 27th September, held at Colne Valley Golf Club, the 2015 Final was played out against Benton Hall, who very narrowly missed out with 3.5 match points against Bentley Golf Club’s 5.5 points. Match report below, and the key thing for myself and Neil Mitchell as competition officials on the day, was how quickly the scoreboards changed from a slightly more dominant Benton, through just a few matches, the tables being turned to give Bentley the crowning achievement. The Committee passes its commiserations to Benton Hall’s Jubilee captain Chris Brockwell, and, playing Club Captain Dave Claxton who sorely missed out on the victory, but who were magnanimous in defeat to player-Captain Keith Clissold’s winning team. The Road to the Final is shown below, so check the latest results on our website, and please feel free to take a look at the photos from the 2015 Finals days also www.jubileecup.com/matches2015/qsf_sheet_2015.html Quarter finals to be completed by 2nd August 2015

MATCH REPORT FINAL:

Benton Hall v The Bentley Golf Club AT COLNE VALLEY GOLF CLUB

I

t was an unusual Final for a number of reasons, but one key one was unusually we had Singles matches fiercely being competed even after the Pairs games had been done and dusted! The Individual Order of Merit completion, in particular, drove Benton Hall’s Alan Moore, in Match 6, to maintain his lead against an unflagging Bentley’s Ian Town through two further holes, even after the overall competition had been decided earlier! Sadly for Alan, it was not to be, and a tight early match and eventual 3 hole lead dwindled to becoming an All Square result on the 18th green, against a Green in Regulation par from Ian (and Alan’s drive initially bound for the lateral hazard on the left of the 18th).

Benton Hall.

The three Pairs matches were consistently in the slight favour of Benton Hall throughout the match, however, two key points were secured by The Bentley against a single victory by Benton Hall Club Captain Dave Claxton , and the recently cut Andy Howarth, who secured a 4&3 victory. The Pairs matches also drove the final result in the Order of Merit, with Keith Lovesy from Benton Hall going into the final day leading by half a point, against David Norris from Bentley. Crucially, however, Keith and Dave Curtis lost 1 down to Bentley, so he remained on 6 points and Bentley’s David Norris shot to the fore, with his 5 and 3 victory (with partner Robin Mitchell) over Benton’s Brian Blakesly and Alan Hickford. For the other singles matches, early blood was drawn by both teams with Bentley’s Kevin Kimber’s 5 and 3 victory over Chris Phillips (and pushing Kevin to a healthy position in the Individual Order of Merit), and Bentley’s Ray - 44 -

Nash beating Benton’s Adrian Symonds by an even mightier 5 & 4. A run of 4 hole wins helped Ray secure a healthy lead going into the back 9, with Adrian fighting back strongly on the 8th and 12th but ultimately too little too late.

The Bentley Golf Club.

Bentley’s Captain Keith Clissold placed himself in match two, against Benton’s Rob Price but very early indicators were with the non-Captain as Rob went 1 up on the first. Fighting back on the second hole, returned the score to All Square for two holes, until successive hole wins had the match at the turn as 4 up to Bentley’s Captain. Despite a valiant riposte on 11 and 14 reducing the win to just three holes, Keith was able to halve remaining holes until the Colne Valley’s 16th when the Bentley Captain secured a 3 and 2 victory. Match Five between Benton’s James Henderson and Bentley’s Dennis Johnson was a sight I was able to see at key moments with some delightful fist-pumps. Actually starting with some hard won halves, first blood was only taken by James on the fourth hole with some to-ing and froing through 12 generally in his favour, until back to back halves from the 13th hole through to the 17th hole. The 17th hole was witness to some spectator participation as the tee of the 187 yard, downhill, par 3, was crowded with both teams, and who had to be calmed in all their excitement, but sadly Dennis’ valiant fight back had the adrenalin pumping and he over-shot the green, with shared bogies seeing any fight-back closing. 2&1 to James, and Benton Hall. Please take a look at the detailed scorecard on our website to see ALL the nine match results.

The Bentley Golf Club.

Jubilee Cup 2015 Order of Merit Results oing into the Final, the end results of the Individual or Pairs Order of Merit could have been won by a host of players - unusually, two players from Crondon Park, and therefore not playing in the Final, could have maintained their League winning position. But it was not to be, and matches on the day saw the winners completing their 2015 challenge. In the Individual Order of Merit, despite a valiant attempt by Benton’s Alan Moore, his eventual All Square result meant that Crondon Park’s Tony Efreme and Brian English finished as Runners Up, with Bentley’s Ray Nash also sharing that position due to his 5&3 victory at the Final. Closing out the deal at Colne Valley, Benton Hall Kevin Kimber’s (who, going into the Final, was behind Alan Moore on hole difference only) match point therefore resulted in seeing him gain 5.5 match points overall and becoming the 2015 Individual Order of Merit Winner. Well done Kevin! In the Pairs Order of Merit, it was really a straight competition between Keith Lovesy of Benton Hall on 6 match points, against David Norris’ (Bentley) 5.5 points which meant significant drama on the day. In the end, however, Keith and his partner Dave Morris lost 1 down and maintained his position on 6 points to become Runner Up for the Pairs Order of Merit. In contrast, David Norris and his Bentley partner Robin Mitchell, and their significant win over Benton Hall, saw David being presented, by Phil Redhead, Jubilee Cup Captain, as 2015 Jubilee Cup Individual Order of Merit Winner, a half a match point clear. I would like to extend my thanks to Colne Valley G.C. for their help and co-operation in providing the course, and wonderful pre and post-

G

match hospitality, and also to their staff who were so helpful – especially Sharon Bayly and Tom Smith, and the serving staff at the prize giving. In particular also, great help and support was received before and during the day from Colne Valley Club and Jubilee Captains Jerry Callow and Peter Ragus, and also being hosted by club President Bernard Adams, whose support also gave us a number of ball spotters on the 1st tee to ensure we got off to a great start! My thanks also to Director Joe Summers and Vince from Birkdale Trophies who supplied our excellently engraved and supplied Jubilee Cup trophies. I’d heartily recommend Birkdale for all your clubs’ trophy needs www.birkdale-trophies.co.uk as they provided an excellent service to us!

The Pro-event on the first day was won by Andy Shakespear from The Warren Golf Club with a solid 4 under par round of 67 which was good enough to take the money by 1 shot from Mark Talbott and by 2 shots from Steve Cipa. The popular winners of the Pro-Am event were the team lead by Essex PGA Captain David Hawkins.

The 36 hole Professional championship was a hard fought competition with the result going down to the last shot in the second round. The winner after two rounds was Lloyd Kennedy of Woolston Manor Golf Club who fought back from a level par round in the morning to shoot a brilliant six under score of 65 in the afternoon and win by one shot from David Salisbury from Three Rivers Golf and Country Club. In third place one shot further back was Mark Baker from Colchester Golf Club. - 46 -

French Pro-Am Chigwell Pro-Am

M

ark Talbott from Thorpe Hall Golf Club came back from an opening round of 80 to take the winners cheque at the PGA in Essex 2015 French Pro-Am. On a difficult but immaculate La Mer course at Le Touquet many players struggled having endured a traumatic journey through the Channel Tunnel arriving with very little time for preparation. The leading first day score was 73 shared by Chris Cutchie from Colchester Golf Club and James Scade from Ingrebourne Links both of whom arrived in France a day earlier.

M

ark Talbott from Thorpe Hall Golf Club followed up his win in the French Pro-Am with a two shot victory in the Chigwell Pro-Am a week later.

A 4 under par 67 on testing greens was enough to take the first prize from Lloyd Kennedy of Woolston Manor Golf Club and was helped by a strong finish with three birdies in the last three holes. In joint third place on level par were Scott Rusbridge from the Coastal Golf Academy and David Jonathan Price from the Topgolf Game centre. The Pro-Am prize was taken by Mike Leitch from Hobbs Cross Golf Centre with his team of John Seabrook, Marcus Snook and Raj Sood who came in with 85 stableford points.

Mark Talbott

The second day was played at the aptly named Belle Dune Golf Club and Talbott made a significant move with a 3 under par 68 which was five shots better than anyone else on the day. And so to the Pines course at Hardelot, recent scene of the European Tour Q school, with two shots separating the leaders and James Scade a further two shots back. Despite a third consecutive 73, Cutchie was caught and passed by Talbott who came in with a 70 to complete a one shot victory which looked unlikely after the first round. Scade and Steve Cipa from South Essex Golf Centre, who shot a creditable 70, shared third place money. In the Pro-Am, Mark Talbott’s team from Thorndon Park Golf Club of Mike Partridge, Patrick Bowler and Scott Clenaghan took the honours over the three days.

EYE EYE!! I

have written a selection of instructional articles over the past 6 years for The Essex Golfer based around various aspects of the short game. However, I would like to touch on a concept which I feel can certainly assist with your alignment. Many articles are written concerning the set up

which are all very valid but as you will see from the image above many top players such as Michelle Wie possess their own unique style and preference. I managed to take this picture of Michelle Wie displaying her “Table top putting style earlier this year in the States. For those who were with me for the Solheim Cup just over a

month ago witnessed an extraordinary display of Sunday afternoon putting from Wie. One key consideration which is helpful, is to know which is your dominant eye. One method to determine your eye dominance is detailed below also coupled with an image.

1. Make a triangle with both hands whilst looking at a stationary object in the distance, such as a tree trunk or flag pole. 2. Close your left eye whilst looking at the object through the triangle. 3. If the object remains in exactly the same position then you are with the majority of the population being right eye dominant. 4. If this is the case, when you close your right eye the object will jump violently to the left side of the triangle which confirms your findings. Armed with this information for the next edition, I will explain how some adjustments within your set up can assist with your putting. - 49 -

Spanish Escuriola Proves Stoke N

atalia Escuriola kept her nerves in check and game together to ensure the WPGA International Challenge ended in a coronation and not a calamity at last week’s 3 day LET Access championship at the family owned Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa resort. The Spaniard’s wire to wire victory not only earned her €4,800 but also fired her up to second place in the LET Access Series and ensured she will compete on the main Ladies European Tour next year. There were moments in the final round of the tournament at Stoke by Nayland however, when what appeared to be a canter to victory for the 21-year-old looked set to end in tears. Not

least during the first four holes when Olivia Cowan, who pipped Escuriola for pole position in the LET Access Series Order of Merit, threatened to take the Gainsborough Course at the Suffolk resort apart. Cowan, a teenager with a British father, Scottish sounding name and BBC accent who represents Germany as a result of spending her 19 years there, began birdie, birdie, birdie, eagle. All of which meant the meaty five stroke lead Escuriola enjoyed at the start of play was reduced to an anorexic one. But in the end Cowan shared third place with France’s Ariane Provot after a two-under-par round of 70 and Raastad finished second on six-under.

David Brown Plays a Scorcher at Colchester Golf Club

Outgoing captain Mike Horley with Incoming Graham Caughey, Jim Wilkinson, Roger Moore and Alan Hyde, Jim Bentley and John Champ.

C

ompeting in the Jack Halls Trophy, Brown put together an eclectic round to return 43 points in this the curtain-raiser to the Vets AGM. Five bogeys in the first nine with birdies on the two par threes formed the base of his round but his back nine was a real eye opener starting with another bogey, he sandwiched six pars between two no-scores. This gave him 43 points

from his 17 handicap. There were 67 players from the Vets Section playing in the competition, and Brown's score was comfortably ahead of his nearest competitor Tom Day (11) who returned 39 points. Day sprinkled three birdies into his round and was two points clear of Bob Tebby (17) and Jim Bentley (22) both returning.

Autumn Win for Shelley at Colchester Golf Club S

helley Persent who recently won the ladies knockout competition and reached the final of the club knockout showed her all-round class winning by the main competition at the Autumn Meeting. On a day perfect for golf and with the course looking its autumn best it was only the putting which made life difficult for the 67 ladies scheduled to take part. A review of Persent’s round shows that by the time she had got to the 8th, she was playing three over her 18 handicap, but three pars with a birdie on the 10th on the next four holes put her back on track Steady golf from then on spoilt only by a double bogey on the 18th saw her back in the clubhouse with the winning card. Scores of 35 were the next best in and these were carded by Patricia Walker (26) and Fiona Rose (28). Philippa Davies (36) returned 34 points to take fourth place with Catherine Chick and

Shelley Persent driving on the 11th.

Janet Tebbutt both scoring 33’s. Nearest the pins were won by Nikki Bryant on the 8th and Shelley Persent on the 16th.

Captains Charity Cup at Five Lakes

S

aturday 17th October saw a large turnout for the Captains Charity Cup held on the Lakes course. Three players returned 35 points, Eric Howlett (13) and Charlie Powell (15) to be just outside the main prizes, also on 35 points was Ben Grant (26) with a better back 9 to claim 3rd prize. The top two places were also decided on count back, second place going to Malcolm Pook (5) leaving the winner Jack Garnett (3) to claim the Trophy both with 36 points. Birdie balls were won by Gary Trim, Andy Lee, Alan Garnett, Doug Wood and Graeme Sinfield. Longest Drive nearest the line was won by Fran Taylor. - 55 -

O

n a glorious autumn Sunday, Five Lakes held the Autumn Trophy where the golfers play match play against the course. As is normal not many golfers beat the course against their handicap. The top two places were decided after count-back, 2nd place went to Frank Taylor (19) on +1 winner of the Autumn Trophy for 2015 is David Rogers (5). The Captain’s Celebratory Jig

B

rian Holmes said good-bye to his sixties in spectacular fashion at Woodford Golf Club. Three days before he turned 70 in early October, he did a little jig on the 18th green when partner Mark Deeming missed a three-foot putt to enable Holmes to beat him by three stableford points in a prestigious competition. And though he did not know it at the time, it won Brian the Past Captains’ Cup. That became apparent after the sixcourse clubhouse dinner when President Roy Webb, organiser of the event and a four-time winner, announced that the 22handicap 1995 skipper had become the Captain of the Past Captains in ousting the 2014 skipper, Mark Deeming, who plays off five, by 37-34 points. Runner-up was Tony Olley, who just pipped Tom Steed on a count-back. Both 10-handicap players notched 36 points. Holmes also provided bottles of Spanish wine as a birthday gesture for the past captains to consume. Brian’s jig was watched from the edge of the

green by Jim Coker, who invented the competition exactly 30 years ago to the day in memory of his father, James, who had died a couple of months earlier in 1985. Jim, who travelled down especially for the event from his Norfolk home, was club captain in that year and was also joint captain with the late Ray Crofts in 1997.

The holder, Mark Deeming (right) hands over the Cup to the 2015 Captain of the Past Captains, Brian Holmes. - 56 -

KNOW YOUR GET TO

Marks Long Wait Finally Pays Off

T

hey say everything comes to those who wait. Well, Mark Rowley waited years and then on the final tee in a summer 36-hole competition, he smote his 4-iron 165 yards over a pond to score a magic hole-in-one at Woodford Golf Club. It still left him nowhere in the all-day 36-hole challenge competition, but it gave him a peculiar satisfaction to have finally achieved the golfing dream. It was no fluke, as many aces are, since Mark was deliberately going for it. The eight-handicap London cabbie now awaits the award of a special watch for his singular achievement.

Stoke by Nayland Golf Club Record Year for Hole in Ones

S

toke by Nayland Golf Club are celebrating a record year for ‘Hole in Ones’, there have never been so many in the history of the club. On Thursday in a Ladies Stableford Competition 36 handicapper Bonnie Head hit a perfect shot with her 5 iron on the par 3 7th hole on the Gainsborough Course. She looked on in disbelief as the ball rolled into the hole. Neither of her playing partners, Mandy Byham and Diana Harris had ever witnessed a hole in one before. Bonnie had to kerb her excitement as Mandy was in the greenside bunker and needed to concentrate to play her shot. Mandy went on to win the competition with 40 points and to cut her handicap to 12. The Head family are all golfers but husband Graham, playing off 10, has been pipped to the post by his wife in recording her hole in one. Bonnie’s was the sixteenth by a Stoke by Nayland member this year, the second lady member, and she qualifies for a BOSS watch with Howdidido.

•The Winter Blues•

T

he Abdominals are split into 4 parts, the rectus Abdominals, the transverse Abdominals, the internal obliques and external obliques. Winter for most golfers bring the blues. Off season, golf courses unplayable, unpleasant weather conditions and missing their hobby/sport. There is a very good way of avoiding or improving these winter blues by hitting the gym! Exercise releases endorphins, a hormone that makes you HAPPY! Also the gym can keep you very busy whilst there is less golf going on. I am a huge advocate of golfers throwing themselves into the gym in the late autumn and winter as this is the only time in the golfing calendar is empty and there is real time to make progress in areas such as posture, core, stability, strength and for me, most importantly, flexibility. A question i am asked frequently by golfers is “what do i do in the gym?” That question to me is an absolutely minefield! Every golfer is different and needs to use the gym in different ways. I would absolutely recommend flexibility to be the number 1 goal. A whole spring/summer playing copious amounts of golf leaves golfers muscles tight and generally out of balance. Once some flexibility or balance has been achieved I would then say the core/posture needs attention, into strength and then finally into power right in time for the golfing season to start all over again! I have written a mini flexibility programme for you all to get you started in the gym below, next month I will cover core/posture and give you a mini programme to follow to start you off there too. FLEXIBILTY Below is an example and a very basic start to balancing the body and achieving flexibility. STRETCH 1. Hamstrings 2. Spinal Rotation

DURATION One minute One minute

LYING HAMSTRING STRETCH Lie on you back with one leg bent and one straight. Loop a belt or towel around the foot of the straight leg. Use your arms to pull the leg up until a stretch is felt behind the knee – keeping the leg straight. This should be firm, but not painful. Be sure to relax your neck and shoulders, and keep breathing as you do this stretch. Corrective streching ... 1 minute holds.

SPINAL ROTATION Lie on your back and bring knees up toward your chest so your body is positioned as if you’re sitting in a chair.Your knees and hips should be bent at 90-degree angles. Now, place the palms of your hands flat on the floor. Bring your knees down to the right side. Lift your left hip up but keep your shoulders touching the floor. repeat both sides. ALWAYS stretch the tight side x 2, for example, if your right side hurts more to stretch, stretch it 2 x rather than 1 x on the left. You are aiming to balance the body, not keep the flexibility issues the same, so always make sure you are stretching the tighter side more than the not so tight side. Any questions regarding flexibility please ask ... I am more than happy to help and look out for my next article next month to start learning how to strengthen your core/posture.

London Golf Show ‘Zones’ in on Women’s Golf Participation

T

he London Golf Show is looking to promote golf participation beyond those already converted to the sport and this year the organisers have introduced a Women’s Zone to the show. As part of the new initiative, the new ‘Zone’ will be managed and coordinated by Felicity Dunderdale of FORE! Women In addition, to celebrate this partnership, the show organiser will be giving ALL women registering on the website before 31st October will gain entry to the show for free! Yes, FREE! FORE! Women is an online women’s guide to golf, with the focus on building a female community UK-wide. In the UK 63% of women do not feel confident enough to approach sports clubs and, more specifically, 50% of women do not feel comfortable at a golf club. This poses as a great threat to the participation levels within women’s golf and is something that shouldn’t be ignored. The new area of the show will be designed to encourage women to take part in an activity which offers you fun, fitness and improvement. As well as helping golf clubs build, develop and nurture relationships with the female community. Commenting o the partnership, Dunderdale

said, “I’m thrilled that FORE! Women have been asked to take part in this year’s London Golf Show at Bluewater. It opens up a fantastic opportunity for women of any level of ability to come and see what golf has to offer. Being a part of the show and hosting a dedicated Women’s Zone means that we can welcome and guide those too who are interested in taking their first steps. We are planning Q&A sessions where ‘no question is a silly question’. And best of all women can currently get their tickets for free.” New owner and CEO of the Show, David Patel, said: “We are really excited to be working with FORE! Women. We have been keen to create this dedicated women’s zone for a while. It has always been one of our companies’ objectives to increase women’s awareness and participation within golf and feel this is a great step in the right direction in achieving this goal. Many brands are encouraging women to the game of golf and we hope the ‘Women go free’ offer, alongside the women’s dedicated zone will support to growth within the ladies side of the game”. The London Golf Show will be held from 1315 November returning to Glow, Bluewater – www.londongolfshow.com
