Ellis is Rayleigh Club Champion I

an Ellis qualified for the PGA Play-Offs in the best possible fashion – by winning The Rayleigh Club Championship by five shots. The Norfolk professional came into the final PGA in England (East) Order of Merit event in the fourth and final qualifying spot for the end-of-season Play Offs, which will be staged at Antalya Golf Club in Turkey from November 29 to December 1. Earlier in the season, he’d been top of the pile but a modest effort by his standards at the previous week’s PGA East Anglian Open had left his chances of making it through hanging in the balance. But Ellis, attached to Great Yarmouth and Caister Golf Club, turned on the style at The Rayleigh Club, producing a stunning opening 64 and a fine follow-up 68 to power to an emphatic triumph at 14-under-par. His heroics ensured that he landed second spot on the final order of merit behind Essex golfer Jason Levermore. It was Ellis’ eighth success in an East region ranking tournament – but his first since 2007. He said: “I am absolutely delighted. To be leading the order of merit, like I was, and then to possibly miss out on the top four and not go to Turkey would have been really hard to take. “I had a good meeting with my sports psychologist Dan Abrahams the other day and it turned me around completely. Now I can’t wait to get back to Turkey – it is going to be awesome. “A few years ago, I was on the verge of quitting golf – I’d stand over a pitching wedge and be scared stiff about where it was going to go. But I’ve fought really hard and I’ve got a few years left in me yet!” Also joining Ellis at Antalya will be Levermore, Darren Charlton and Mark Hooper. Levermore’s place was secure earlier in the summer, thanks to his second place in the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship. But the Channels Golf Club professional will also head to Turkey as the leading player from the region after

finishing fifth at The Rayleigh Club, easily enough to claim the Order of Merit crown for the fourth time in his career. He said: “I wanted to win this week but winning the order of merit again is a great second prize. So, I’m over the moon with it, to be honest.” As well as an ultra-consistent Order of Merit campaign, Levermore has won a stack of pro-ams in 2014 and attributes his success to a couple of key factors. He said: “It’s just down to being more relaxed and happy in my life. I’ve got my job at Channels which is going well – they give me a lot of support. It’s good at home, too, as we’ve got an 18-month old boy and he makes us happy. Everything is just good in life and it seems to be going nicely.” At The Rayleigh Club, the big move in the race for the Play Offs came from Charlton (Dunstable Downs), who started the tournament in sixth place on the rankings. But he put together rounds of 66 and 71 to tie for second at the Essex venue and finish third on the overall standings. Charlton said: “It is the first time I will have played in the play offs, but the second time I have qualified. A few years ago I did qualify for them but due to the birth of my daughter I had to drop out. “It is very satisfying to qualify. I got off to a flying start on the first day – five-under after four holes was a once in a lifetime start. That gave me the foundation to keep going.” Charlton shared second place with Mark Davis (Thorndon Park) and also amateur golfer Ricky Lee, who plays at The Rayleigh Club. Hooper, who won the PGA East Anglian Open at Basildon, could only finish in a tie for 13th at the club where he is attached. But that was enough to see him make the end-of-season showdown in Turkey. He said: “To get through is amazing. Two weeks ago, before Basildon, I didn’t think there was a chance.”

Darren Charlton, Ian Ellis, Jason Levermore and Mark Hooper will all be going to the season-ending PGA Play Offs in Turkey. -2-

O

n a rain drenched day at Bush Hill Park at the end of August, East Region PGA held the regional finals of the Inter County Championship with teams from Norfolk, Suffolk, Middlesex, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire. Essex was represented by Mark Stokes from the Rayleigh Driving Range, Mark Talbott from Thorpe Hall Golf Club and Chase Davis from Stapleford Abbotts Golf Club. The format for the day was the best two scores from each team to count and Essex decisively won the Jason event with any of their two Levermore. scores being good enough to qualify for the finals. The final will be held at The Belfry in October over 36 holes and we wish the team every success in bidding to become National County Champions for the first time. At the same time as the Inter County Championship finals, many of our Professionals will be in Brugges for our overseas Pro-Am, one of the early highlights of our season. The Professionals, with their teams of three amateurs will be playing at Royal Ostend, Damme Country Club and finally Royal Zoute which is justifiably one of the top ten courses in Europe. The tournament will be hard fought during the day and probably discussed at great length each evening in one

of the many splendid restaurants which are to be found in the old city! Our season starts the week before Brugges with one of the flagship events of the year, the Essex PGA Championships which this year will again be played at The Burstead Golf Club with the kind sponsorship of Audi Harold Wood. The Championships will be contested over 36 holes on Wednesday 8th October and will be defended by Jason Levermore from Channels Golf Club. The Championship Pro-Am will be played the previous day, Tuesday 7th October, also at The Burstead, the event being fully subscribed 10 days prior to close of entries. 120 golfers comprising 30 professionals and 90 amateurs will enjoy a great day’s golf at one of the friendliest golf clubs in Essex. Full results of all these events will be in the next issue of Essex Golfer. Essex Professionals have continued their success in East Region events with the following wins: Jason Levermore from Channels Golf Club has collected another three wins in a very successful season; he won at the Grove with a sparkling 7 under par 65 then in the space of three days won at Swaffham with a 4 under par 67 and finally an amazing 7 under par 62 at Stanmore. Andy Pestell won at his home club of Chelmsford with an excellent score of 5 under par 63 and has taken his strong game to the humidity of Dubai playing a few events on the Meena tour. James Scade from Elsenham picked up 1st place at Three Rivers by firing a 5 under par 67. Chase Davis took the honours after a long trip to Eaton Golf Club near Norwich with a 4 under 66. Finally the East Anglian Open at Basildon Golf Club was won by The Rayleigh Club’s Mark Hooper with a two round total of 136, his second Order of Merit success for 2014. enjoy your game

Vegas in the state of Nevada!

The franchise system was bought to Europe in 1992 and Nevada Bobs Colchester was one of first ten stores to open.

It is now 20 years this November and golf has seen many changes from players like Tiger Woods dominating, brands like Callaway who were only just starting back then being a brand leader, Europe winning most of the recent Ryder Cups and golf seeing more clubs open and a change in the way membership has evolved and become more flexible. Here at Neveda Bobs Colchester the one thing that has remained constant is the level of service we pride ourselves on, a wide choice of brands, price points and a belief that giving the customer what is best for them and not just what is best for us is why we are still here when many other golf shops have fallen by the wayside. In those 20 years we have expanded the store by building a mezzanine floor and also moving our large office to a much smaller one further out the back. This enabled us to have a dedicated ladies section which Sue has run and keeps getting better and better each year.

In all these factors the key is staff. Sue and I have obviously been here from that start but we are also very lucky to have had 4 key staff in that time to ensure we maintain everything that is good about Nevada Bobs Colchester. Andrew has been with us 18 years, Jonathan, 17 years, Andy, 13 years and these are the front line on the stop floor team while Helena, 12 years keeps all the paperwork in order. We could not have succeeded without this loyal, knowledge and committed team. Finally to you the customer who have supported us over those 20 years we would like to say a big ‘thank you.’ Words are great but as a bigger thank you we are holding a 5 day celebration with some fantastic offers, prizes to be one (everyone who spends £20 or more will get a prize*) and some extra deals to be won on top of those excellent offers. Please see the advert for everything that is going on from Thursday 20th November (there will be more added along the way) and come along to pick up as many of those offers you want and celebrate our 20th anniversary.

PERFECT YOUR

PUTTING PRACTICE Do you know what and how to practice your putting?

T

his article will provide you with a fun drill whilst practicing your putting distance control which I like to coach my clients. The whole area of the short game is very often neglected in preference to hours of hitting buckets of balls at the range, which incidentally can bear little relevance to actual course situations unless the player possesses prior knowledge on how to achieve this. I believe players do not spend time working on their putting mainly for the following reasons: • They perceive it to be “boring” • Lack of comprehension how to measure improvement • Do not understand basic fundamentals of the putting stroke • Can end up with a sore back (due to ineffective practice) • Believe tomorrows putting round will be improved

There are many elements that make up an effective putter which is another topic but the purpose of this putting blog is to provide you with one simple drill which can enhance your enjoyment rather than focus solely upon technical elements.

Putting pace drill.

- 12 -

Feel and Distance Control This is a skill that can be learned so I would like to share with you one practice game which can be worked upon on a individual basis or as part of a competition with your playing partner, remember we want to have “friendly competition!” It is important that we try to recreate as near playing conditions as possible during practice. Pace putting is a really critical element to assist with our overall putting statistics and shot reduction, I believe putting to a hole is not always necessary when working on “feel” so next time you are on your putting green on your own or with a friend simply putt 5 balls to the fringe of the green trying to finish as close as possible keeping the ball on the green not rolling onto the green surrounds. • 3 points finishing 1 grip length away (approx. 1ft) • 2 points finishing 1 putter length (approx. 3 ft) • 1 point finishing 2 putter lengths (approx. 6 ft) • 0 points if the ball finishes on the apron or beyond This game can be measured for improvement with the scores accumulated on an individual basis or a match play style format which is great for new players to gain understanding of the various formats of the game. A variety of lengths and contours can be selected randomly which allows players to experience a variety of playing situations My favourite saying of “Perfect Practice makes permanent” (Vince Lombardi) is certainly something to remember, I hope you enjoy your new drill and please let me know how you get on.

The Magic Roundabout W E L C O M E TO

T

hey say there are a things in life that are for certain, taxes and death spring to mind but now there's another - the promise of the 'next best thing' in golf. My problem is that the next best thing keeps going around in a circle. For example, 'golfers need adjustable drivers' but then a few months later 'well actually they don't', or 'golfers need coloured drivers' and then a few months later 'well actually they don't'. Or perhaps 'golfers don't need adjustable drivers' and then a few months later ' well actually they do’. Companies just copy the other companies to hopefully make a sale! You get my point? What I don't understand is why golf companies don't invent a technology, believe in it, slowly improve it over time and stand by it - not just jump around from pillar to post trying to make a quick sale. In all fairness some companies do have this idea as their business model, just not enough in my opinion. Notice I'm not mentioning any company names here, thought it might be a little safer for the future but one thing I have really noticed this year is that my customers are not looking to change their equipment so quickly and to not buy a new driver every few months when the latest and greatest model appears. Customers are happy to spend a little more, buy something that works and be happy with the fact they don't even have to bother when the new model comes out. To me that makes sense, especially as I believe it takes months to get used to new equipment. Many golfers have traded in their old driver before they have even given it a chance.

I recently read a golf book written in 1938, it was fantastic but it was the equipment section that really caught my eye (obviously), it read: "Choosing your equipment carefully is of absolute importance and should be done under the careful supervision of your Professional who will only recommend equipment that suits your ability, size and stature.” Genius! So in 1938 having the correct equipment was of 'absolute importance’ but for many fitted equipment is something new. Well, the truth is it never actually went away, it just got put on a back burner as it was easier to sell 'off the shelf'. Yet another roundabout, round and round it goes ... I like good old truth, fact and reason, not just whims. If the latest and greatest does not out perform your current equipment don't change it, after all it's the only way to get off the roundabout and we all know that too long on a roundabout can make you sick.

Hooper Triumphs at PGA East Anglian Open Basildon Win Boosts Play Offs Hopes

Essex golfer Mark Hooper gave his hopes of reaching the PGA Play Offs a major boost with victory in the PGA East Anglian Open at Basildon Golf Club.

Mark Hooper saves par at the 9th hole during the second round of the PGA East Anglian Open.

T

he top three players from the PGA in England (East) Order of Merit will make it through to the prestigious end-of-season finale, which takes place at Antalya Golf Club in Turkey from November 29 to December 1. Before the latest tournament, Hooper (The Rayleigh Club) had slipped to 10th spot, despite being successful in the PGA East Region Championship at Essendon Country Club in June. But he put himself right back in the Play Offs picture at Basildon, thanks to rounds of 66 and 70 that left him on eight-under-par, two shots clear of the runner-up Andrew George. Hooper’s triumph saw him climb to second in the official standings, ahead of the final Order of Merit event, which will be played next week at his home club. “I knew what I had to do to get back in the Play Offs again – and it was lovely to go out there and do it,” said Hooper, who finished top of the Order of Merit in 2013. “I think, when you’ve got a clear goal of what you need to do, it makes you score a little bit easier. I only came here to play positive golf. - 18 -

“Sometimes, when you are already in the topthree, it’s sometimes easy to guard. But because I knew I had to win or finish second, it made it clear in my mind what I needed to do. “I am over the moon to have won. I’m really pleased with how I felt so relaxed when I was leading. “It feels like as I’ve got older, when I am under pressure I seem to be doing a lot better. I don’t Mark Hooper celebrates seem to struggle too his success in the PGA much. Sometimes the East Anglian Open. things you do mentally are more satisfying than what you do technically.” Hooper’s opening six-under-par effort ensured that he started the second round with a two-shot lead. He extended that advantage to four, thanks to birdies at the second and third holes. George (Ely City) began the day three back, but launched a concerted challenge with a superb scoring spree. He rattled off three straight birdies from the third, before driving the green at the parfour seventh hole and then converting from 12 feet for the eagle. The Cambridgeshire professional sank a curling 15-footer for another birdie at the next and suddenly he was breathing down Hooper’s neck. As the pressure increased on the back nine, George was understandably unable to sustain that sort of form – and a double bogey at the 16th effectively ended his chances. Meanwhile, Hooper kept his nerve with some composed golf to hold at bay playing partner Jason Levermore (Channels). A key chip-and-putt for par at the dangerous 13th, followed by a birdie at the 16th restored a healthy cushion at the top for Hooper. He could even afford to bogey the penultimate hole before signing off with a two-putt par at the last to clinch victory. Levermore was close to finishing in a tie for second, but a double bogey at the last saw him drop back to third. But he had the consolation of going top on the Order of Merit, opening up a healthy advantage over his rivals. A tied-sixth finish at Basildon lifted Stuart Brown (Orton Meadows) into third, while former leader Ian Ellis (Great Yarmouth and Caister) has fallen to fourth. - 19 -

Royal and Ancient Golf Club Votes to Welcome Women Members

T

he result of the postal ballot among members of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews was declared early yesterday evening. The decision to hold a ballot in which all of the Club’s global members had a chance to participate was more than vindicated by the participation of more than 75% of those eligible to vote. Peter Dawson, Secretary of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club. Said: “I am very pleased indeed to announce that the membership of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews has voted overwhelmingly in favour of welcoming women members. More than three quarters of the club’s global membership took part in the ballot, with a decisive 85% voting for women to become members. “This vote has immediate effect and I can confirm that The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews is now a mixed membership club. The membership has also acted to fast-track a significant initial number of women to become members in the coming months.

“This is a very important and positive day in the history of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club. The R&A has served the sport of golf well for 260 years and I am confident that the club will continue to do so in future with the support of all its members, both women and men.” www.RandA.org

n a bright sunny afternoon, the Bronze Shield Final took place between Thorndon Park and Burnham-on-Crouch at Bentley Golf Club. The course was presented in superb condition. Both teams had tremendous support. Burnham-onCrouch won the toss and elected to tee off first. When the teams stopped for refreshments after nine holes, Thorndon Park were up in three matches, down in one and all square in the other three.

Lynn Leigh of Thorndon Park was the first to win 4 & 2 against Amy Barnes of Burnham-onCrouch. Then Lynn Scales and Valerie Robinson of Thorndon Park both won their matches 2 & 1. Jillean Hipsey of Burnham-on-Crouch was standing on the 18th tee all square in her match when the news was given that Thorndon Park had won the Final, as Caroline Whetstone of Thorndon Park had won her match on the 15th hole 4& 3, so she and her playing opponent, Andrea Partridge agreed to half their match. The other two remaining matches on the course picked up their balls. All the matches were played in a friendly but competitive spirit. At the end of an exciting day the Bronze Team Captain of Thorndon Park, Sally Williams was thrilled to be presented with the Bronze Shield by the County President, Maureen Low. Elaine Mason the Bronze Team Captain of Burnham-on-Crouch added her congratulations and thanks to Bentley Golf Club all the caddies, and the spectators for making it such a memorable day.

his year’s ‘Auld Enemies Cup’, the only pandisabled Ryder Cup style match in the World, between the disabled golfers of England/Wales and Scotland took place at the prestigious The Shire in Barnet, North London this year. At the only Seve Ballesteros designed course in the UK. The disabled golfers of England/Wales and Scotland battled in 3 days of amazing golf and tension. The disabilities represented included amputees, one arm, blind/partially sighted, MS and blind golfers. After 3 days, Scotland won the trophy back and now the series is level at 2 matches each – strangely it’s always been the away side that has

The home international series now includes Wales - England won the Oldfield Trophy played out at The Wiltshire in a two-day event held over the August bank holiday weekend. Graeme Robertson, nonplaying captain of the England/ Wales team said, “Many congratulations to Scotland on their well-deserved victory, we are disappointed to lose, but the matches were very close, and I am very proud of my team for their efforts and sportsmanship. I put together a team from our season-long Order of Merit, that represents what the Disabled Golf association is all about different abilities/disabilities, ages and parts throughout the country joining together. We have ex-serving service members, amputees, Parkinson’s, MS, blind and stroke survivors all participating together. Many thanks to the Menai-Davies family at The Shire for their continued support of disabled golf. What’s Been Happening North of The Border! W

ow, a lot has been happening in Scotland with two historic votes being decided within 24 hours of each other, a Match and a Conference. First the ‘YES’ vote from the members of The R&A to include women members. A great message has been sent out and hopefully will encourage more girls and ladies to take up the game. Second the ‘NO’ vote to remain in The United Kingdom. Truly something that has been amazing to follow. Also, there has been the small matter between Europe and USA in The Ryder Cup.A great victory for The European’s winning by a margin of 16.5 to 11.5 points. Well done Paul and his team! The conference, well that is what I want to talk about. The PGA’S of Europe organised a 2 day event, which saw people from all over the world including myself, gather to listen to speakers that are experts in their field and to share their knowledge with us. Well what was the conference all about? The main theme was emphasising the importance of the coach and their impact and role on the golfer. Also, how to help and develop golfers of all ages and abilities to improve and above all enjoy the game of game! The thing is what relevance does that have for you reading this article? Well, I have been on a mission to find and explore ways to make you ‘The Golfer’ play the game a better way. Over the last 9 years as a dedicated ‘PGA Golf Coach’, I have spent a lot of time at seminars and conferences to find answers to my questions to be a specialist golf coach. So the question we all need to ask ourselves is this: How can I improve myself? We all need as a golfer an understanding of where we are going and heading with our game. If you have no clarity how can you improve! So, the answer is as follows; • understanding your weaknesses and strengths • develop and improve on your weaknesses • have a plan of action to help this

Giving Bernard Gallacher a tip on putting.

All players have strengths and weaknesses and if you do not have a plan to help develop and improve, your enjoyment of golf is lessened and the game feels like hard work. This is why I am available to help you with a player pathway regardless of age and ability to unlock your potential. If you are interested in improving your game I am running a FREE OPEN session at the following venues; Epping Golf Club – Saturday 18th October 3pm til 6pm The Essex G&CC – Sunday 19th October 1pm til 4pm Contact me on Mobile: 07888 828 760 Email wozthepro@gmail.com Twitter wozthegolfpro1 I will leave you with a quote; Nil Satis Nisi Optimum (Nothing but the best is good enough).

There is no up only around. T

he appearance of a golf swing is not how it feels. The swing plane bears testimony to this in my experience. Generally, most golfers tend to swing their arms and club up in the air on the backswing. This causes a disconnection between the arm’s club and body, and leads the club onto a sliced swing path. I feel there is no vertical swing of the club, if your posture is correct simply rotate the torso, the arms and the club as they swing with no manipulation, they will find a good plane. The practice drill I am doing in the swing sequence will help you understand this. Firstly, set up as I am doing in Picture 1 without a club, my palms facing down and my hands separated. Now move your arms into the backswing without trying to lift them, just allow them to find their own way.

1

2

As you can see in Picture 2, they end up around the right shoulder, not above my head, if you now swing them down, and though they move around to the left shoulder, Picture 3. Now try this with a club starting at address in Picture 4 then recreating the feeling of the drill the club as shown in Picture 5 finds a good plane around my right shoulder, without any attempt to lift the club into the backswing. If you would like to work with me on your game, why not give me a call, the initial consultation to discuss your needs and ambitions is free, just call 07801 428 174 to set up this appointment.

The Battle Of Woodfords

I

n the battle of the golfing Woodfords, the Australians have triumphed again in the International Challenge, but this time by a narrower margin than before. For the past two years, the ancient Woodford Golf Club at Woodford Green in north-east London has played annual long distance matches with its upstart namesake,Woodford Golf Club in Queensland. Since the clubs are Woodford Golf Club thousands of miles apart and the costs of playing a proper match are prohibitive, the two clubs decided on longdistance “test” matches with each club fielding a team of 11 after the Australians set up the annual International Challenge. 125 YEARS So the 11 best September Medal net scores are collated at each end of the earth to give a result. This time the British Woodford men totalled 744 while the Queensland lads just pipped them with 738. The 11 low English scorers, eight of whom beat the 70 par of the course, were: Mark Bonham 63 net, Mark Rowley 65, Adrian Trett 66, Paul Morley 66, Terry Chisholm 67, Anthony Weaver 69, David Rowell 69, Steve Pardoe 69, Mark Deeming 70, Michael Cutter 70 and Les Curtis 70. While the Woodford Green outfit has an ancient lineage - the nine-hole course established in Epping Forest, Essex, in 1890, celebrates its 125th anniversary next year as the second oldest club (after Royal Epping) in the Essex Golf Union - the rural Queensland venture was only begun in 1933 also as a nine-hole affair. In abeyance for four years during World War 2, it moved to a new course in 1947 and was extended to 18 holes in 1970. One oddity is that the Queensland club’s crest features a magpie, which is a bird plaguing fairway life at the Epping Forest course. Should any Woodford GC members from Queensland visit their English namesake, they have been offered the courtesy of the course. A similar offer has been made by the Australians to members of their counterpart.

North Course Ready to Impress Top Juniors at Quinta Do Lago

T

he UK’s new generation of up-and-coming golf stars are set for a treat at Quinta do Lago next month after it was confirmed that the 2014 Telegraph BMW Junior Golf Championship will take place on the resort’s eagerly-awaited redeveloped North Course. The 21 finalists will be among the first golfers to play the €9.6m new layout when the 54-hole strokeplay event is held at the prestigious Algarve resort for the second year in a row from October 8-10. The highly-regarded event is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, with the field of 12 boys and nine girls competing for the chance to succeed 2013 champions Ashton Turner and Alice Hewson. The totally revamped North Course has been redesigned by renowned American architect Beau Welling in close collaboration with Paul McGinley, and the 2014 European Ryder Cup captain will be on hand to officially open the new development just 24 hours before the tournament starts. John Dwyer, chief executive of Quinta do Lago, said: “We are delighted to be hosting the final for the second successive year in what is a very important year both for the event and our resort. “The redeveloped North Course is part of a significant investment programme that is being undertaken at Quinta do Lago and I think the juniors will be blown away by what they see. The course is very different but very playable and is a real challenge, and we’re looking forward to welcoming the finalists next month.” The two Telegraph winners in Portugal will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of former finalists who, in previous years, have included the likes of 2013 US Open champions Justin Rose,Tom Lewis, Tommy Fleetwood, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Melissa Reid, Hayley Davis and Carly Booth. Hundreds of qualifying rounds have been staged at clubs across the UK throughout the summer, with this year’s group of finalists including the winners of a new under-14 nett competition for boys and girls. One of the most talked about development projects in Europe in 2014, Quinta do Lago’s North Course has been built to the highest specifications with a major investment programme and is in line to become the new number one course at the prestigious family resort.

The layout has been revamped with the emphasis firmly on precision and strategy. While many modern-day developments tend to focus on length, Welling and McGinley have been keen to design a golfing experience where accuracy and course management are the key factors, and a course that is playable and fun for golfers of all abilities. Among the changes introduced on the par-72, 6,776-yard course, which has been closed since last December, all greens, tees, bunkers, irrigation, drainage systems and cart paths have been rebuilt using the latest state-of-the-art technology, with four sets of tees introduced on each hole to accommodate players of all levels. McGinley said: “This has been a very exciting project to be involved in and Beau and I are very proud of what we have created. “I’ve been coming to Quinta do Lago with my family for many years now and it keeps getting better and better. The new design will test golfers in many different ways and I believe this is a great addition to Europe’s leading destination.” www.quintadolago.com

Millers Barn Foot-golf

M

illers Barn held their first qualifying round of their monthly foot-golf ranking tournament on Sunday 24 August. Competitors came from all over Essex and Suffolk to take part in the tournament. The winners of the ranking tournaments go through to the UK Footgolf championship. With 62 players taking part, 54 adults and 8 juniors, the competition was fairly tough with everyone trying to build up their points for the next round. The competition held over 18 holes, the same as an ordinary golf round, but, with players using their feet instead of clubs. Games are played every week with qualifying tournaments every month. The next tournament is on the 21 September, and is open to all, call Millers Barn for details. This week’s winner was Liam Coytie shooting a nett 61, a 12 under par round. In second place was Ben Clarke, a regular footgolfer, who commented that this was the best course he had played so far, with a nett 63, third was Ian Heydon with a nett 71 and fourth was Mark Butler with a nett 73.

he Society of Essex Lady Captain’s Ida Bunting Memorial Trophy 2014 was brought to a conclusion at Crondon Park Golf Club, Stock, at the end of August. The course was in superb condition and proved itself to be very challenging as a final should be. Thanks to Crondon Park for hosting the fina. The finalists, Lesley Allsuch of Abridge Golf Club and Joan Parkes of Ballards Gore gave the spectators a very exciting match to watch, it was nip and tuck all the way. Joan went into the lead quite early but after a slow start Lesley got into her stride, both ladies played some truly wonderful shots, especially their short game. As the game progressed Lesley increased her lead and eventually won the match on the 16th. Players, Committee and spectators all retired to the Club house for light refreshments and to be congratulated by Lady President Jan Collier. The finalists were presented with their well earned trophies of Runner up and Winner of the 2014 Ida Bunting Memorial Trophy along with mementos of the 6 rounds of golf they had each taken part in, a toast made a fitting end to a lovely day! - 45 -

A GOOD IMAGE TO STOP COMING OVER THE TOP I

f you are a player who comes across the ball which can cause a number of bad shots such as a slice, fat and thin shots, pulls, etc which is causing all kinds of inconsistency in your shots. This is a common move which we are trying to do is to swing the club on the correct plane which will create the correct path to the ball ... Try this image to get you to swing more on a plane ... Imagine a line going from the ball through the neck on an incline plane with the aim to swing under the line in the down swing... If you come over the top you will hit the line. I have it set up here with a training aid called the Swing Plane perfector with a swimming noodle attached to it ... This is a great tool as you will hit the swimming noodle if you come over the top. Give it a try!!

At the top of the backswing swing just under the plane.

Team Competitions September has seen the Essex County Golf Union’s four team competitions declare their Champions after closely fought finals across the County. The Thornton Challenge Cup, the blue ribbon team event for EGU affiliated golf clubs, held it’s final on 21st September on the wellpresented course at Wanstead Golf Club. Defending champions Chelmsford faced Romford and a final that promised a very high standard did not disappoint. With scores tied after the morning’s play it was last year’s victors Chelmsford whose experience shone winning 8 of their 10 afternoon singles matches for a final result of 10 ½ - 4 ½ and the title of Thornton Cup Champions for the second year running. The Leslie F Wood final between Chigwell and Frinton was played at Woolston Manor Golf Club on a beautiful late summer’s day and saw neither team able to separate themselves until very late in proceedings. The match was decided in game 8 of the afternoon singles, a Chigwell point that took the title out of reach of Frinton despite securing 2 last points from their final 2 matches. Finishing score 8 – 7 with Chigwell winning their fifth Leslie F Wood title since the Championship began and their first in 28 years. For the first time in a few years The Norman Plum Trophy Final was not played home and away, this year’s match seeing The Essex and Stock Brook Manor compete at Colne Valley Golf Club on 14th September. At the end of the match scores were level at 3 – 3 which left the Champions to be decided from the result of the first match of the day, which for The Essex was a win by Andreas Granmo and Glen Swift and added a third

Norman Plum title in four years to their trophy cabinet. Our commiserations must go to Stock Brook after such a strong performance throughout this year’s campaign. The last of the four County team competitions, The Essex Seniors Team Championship, welcomed finalists Chigwell and Chelmsford to Colchester Golf Club on 10th September. As both sides set out with victory in sight it was Chelmsford who narrowly led at the half way stage but much like their Thornton Cup comrades the side stamped their authority on proceedings as the afternoon progressed winning 5 out of 6 matches and taking the final by 8 ½ - 2 ½. A second Seniors Team Trophy for Chelmsford since 2004 marking another good season in County team events for the club. Only two Champions are left to be decided in the Essex Golf Union’s men’s team competitions, both the Thornton Cup and Leslie F Wood Plate finals are to be held at Crondon Park Golf Club on Sunday 12th October with the below teams set to battle it out for the years final plaudits: Thornton Cup Plate

Canons Brook vs Thorndon Park

Boyce Hill vs The Warren Forty-three clubs entered the new format County Inter-Club Youth Shield in 2014, each battling through several zonal matches until whittled down to this year’s finalists – Warley Park vs Rochford Hundred, pitted against each other at Colne Valley Golf Club on 14th September. After a closely fought encounter it was Rochford Hundred who took the title with a 3-2 win, the clubs fifth in this competition since its inception in 1951. The Essex Golf Union would like to congratulate each of this year’s winners and thank all host clubs for their support and outstanding hospitality throughout the season that has made each competition such a success.

Allan Lockwood Trophy The Semi-Finals and the Final of the Allan Lockwood Trophy were played at Colne Valley Golf Club on Sunday 14th September. Put up by the EGU’s then President Allan Lockwood in 2002, the prestigious County event is extremely popular with club golfers – 2014’s 85 first round entrants proving so. Defending champion Lee Willis (Crondon Park) met Ian Evans (Ilford) in the first semi-final, a match that took three playoff holes to separate the pair with Lee winning on the 21st hole. The second match saw Graham Page (Stock Brook Manor) play Greg Smith (Stoke by Nayland) and go on to a 3 and 2 win over the Stoke by Nayland player. After some lunch and a quick turnaround this year’s finalists Lee Willis and Graham Page teed off with the Trophy within touching distance. A match played in good spirits and producing some fabulous golf saw Graham Page the victor with a 2 and 1 win over the defending Champ. Congratulations to Graham.

Order of Merit 2014 The Order of Merit awards points on a sliding scale to participants in each of the qualifying events throughout the year. Arriving at the last qualifying event, the Upminster Trophy on 13th September, there was only a slim seven point deficit between 1st and 2nd place, Bailee Curran (Warley Park) and Billy Deville (Bentley). Deville done his upmost to narrow the gap posting a level par second round and finishing 3rd overall, a placing that added 18 points to his final Order of Merit tally. However it wasn’t enough to displace leader Curran, a steady 3 over par second round and 6th place finish overall secured him 15 Order of Merit points and this year’s title. Congratulations to Bailee, Order of Merit winner 2014.

England Golf County Champion of Champions This year’s three County Champions, Ricky Lee (The Raleigh Club), Seniors Champion Tikki Hadjioannou (Maylands) and Boys Champion Taylor Carter (Rochford Hundred) travelled to Woodhall Spa for England Golf’s County Champion of Champions tournament where respective County Champions compete over 36 holes for the prestigious title of England Golf “Champion of Champions”. At 7100 yards and rated the best inland layout in the country the Hotchkin Course at Woodhall Spa provided a strong test over the two days play, each day playing at least 2 shots above its par 73. County Champion Ricky Lee put in steady performances to finish 12th in the Men’s competition on eight over par whilst Seniors Champion Tikki Hadjioannou improved on his first round by four strokes to finish 14th in the Senior’s section. The highlight for Essex was Boys County Champion Taylor Carter whose excellent rounds of 75 & 73 and two over par total secured him a third place finish, thanks in part to an eagle three on his final hole. This performance caps a wonderful season for Taylor who was part of the winning under 18 English Boys County Champions team and who more recently won his Club Championship at Rochford Hundred.

Romford & Upminster Trophies It was a mild but overcast day as 65 players set out to play the well-presented course at Romford on 5th September in the Romford Trophy. The mornings play saw Rochford Hundreds Mitchel Sarling sit atop the leader board with an opening 68 but it was his club mate Arthur Leonard, with a gross 139, who secured the Trophy behind second placed Todd Clements (Braintree). In the events handicap section Thomas Watkins (Rochford Hundred) won on count back over Tom Neale (Harwich & Dovercourt) with a nett 137. Played annually at Upminster Golf Club, the Upminster Bowl and the Upminster Trophy, for players under 25 and 25 and over respectively are together called The Upminster Trophies. With the course in good condition and weather mild the 55-man field were headed by Colin Johnson (Hainault Forest) through the mornings play, posting a 69 to lead on count back and it was Johnson who remained atop to take the Upminster Trophy (over 25’s) by 2 strokes with a gross 139. The Upminster Bowl (under 25’s) was won by Romford’s own Daniel Garner who also posted a gross 139 to win by 2 strokes. Ryan Tatton (Chelmsford) won the handicap prize by 1 stroke with a nett 136. - 51 -

Monthly Fixtures & Events Round Up The Burstead Golf Club provided an ideal setting for the County Seniors final league match of the season against Bedfordshire on 7th September. The team got off to a strong start ahead or level in most games and by half way it seemed likely that another victory was close. However the course still demanded concentration and managed golf from the players, exemplified when Nigel Stokes came from 2 down to win 1 up on the final green and secure a final 7 – 3 victory. A fitting close to the season for the Seniors side, finishing league runners up and with much confidence heading into next year. The final match of the 2014 Colts League was played at Rochford Hundred on Saturday 6th September. The previous matches had been triangular matches between Essex, Bedford and Hertfordshire but regrettably Bedford had to withdraw from this final match unable to field a team due to other commitments. Coming into the final match Essex held a slim lead in the League standings but although missing some key figures, Hertfordshire were not going to let that increase without a fight. After tying the morning’s foursomes it left all to play for in the afternoon’s singles and as matches wore on the tide began to swing in Essex’s favour, bringing thoughts of the South East regional final to the forefront and spurring the team onto a final victory 8 ½ - 3 ½. The South East Colts League Final will be held at Hendon Golf Club on Sunday 12th October against Hampshire.A week earlier, the County Men’s side also play Hampshire in their South East League final, Sunday 5th October at The Warren. We wish both teams well. The third year of the U14 Junior Golf Tour concluded at Garon Park Golf Club on 28th August and saw 48 youngsters participate. A superb 2 over par by Callum Hensby (Stoke by Nayland) in the Under 14 category was not able to be matched, Callum’s winning margin 3 shots over Lily May Humphreys (Maylands) and Joe Defries (Warley Park). The Under 13 players also posted good scores with George Earle (Upminster) scoring 5 over par to take the prize for the day. Lily Humphreys took the girls scratch prize convincingly, posting 5 over par to top running up Ashley Chalmers (Thorndon Park) by 11 shots. The runner up spot did however allow Ashley to take the Handicap award for the day. Max Moreton (Bentley) took the U13 nett award whilst Joe Defries (Warley Park) won the U14 handicap award. Once all scores were equated for the seasons Order of Merit awards were presented. Lily May Humphreys was the clear winner of the Girls scratch section whilst Ashley Chalmers dominated the handicap scores. The U13 section was decided before the last round started with James Butler (Boyce Hill) the clear winner. The U14 section was won by Callum Hensby (Stoke by Nayland) and in the U12’s section a great last round by Charlie Dodds secured him the Trophy. All the scores from each section were combined to give Callum Hensby the honour and satisfaction of being this year’s NORMAN GARON TRUST Order of Merit champion. captain Matt Milburn clinging on to gain his team a further point. However, it all boiled down to the last doubles match of PlayGolf Peter Quilty & Wayne Lusted v Channels’ Stuart “Dennis” Waterman & Paul Thompson, going up their 18th hole (Stock Brooks’s 9th) - unbeknownst to the four-ball, a PlayGolf win would push a Sudden Death play-off on the 19th hole (and Spencer had been kept away from the bar just for this eventuality!) as Channels were leading with 4.5 points, and PLayGolf were in good state to achieve this. Driving off well, and negotiating the twin lakes of the 9th holes’ set-up well, there were a couple of pulled shots missing the “18th” green. Needing just a half from the final game, Channels were in good stead on the green, and with the aforementioned doubletab and pulled approach shot by PlayGolf, the result won Channels into the 2014 Final. Our thanks to Stock Brook Manor for their hospitality and providing a course in excellent condition.

ubilee Cup Stalwarts Channels playing a re-vitalised PlayGolf at Stock Brook Manor in 2014, and became the ultimate victor in a 5&4 win. After the obligatory “photos on the lawn” of Stock Brook Manor, we held a two-tee start in glorious sunshine, but with an edge of wind that was to make conditions tricky for the rest of the day. Thanks needs to go to SBM’s Jubilee Captain Andy Picton in helping with the arrangements on the day, and his personal attendance to see us off! Early blood was taken by PlayGolf Colchester’s Bruce Critchley in a 6 & 4 victory. However, honours were pretty equal in the initial points with Rainer Martyn from Channels getting their first point, and then another PlayGolf single pushed ahead with Spencer Bond (and 2014 Singles Order of Medal winner) winning 4 &2. In the doubles, I was privileged to witness some hotly contested action towards the end of the game, with some spectacular Par three approaches, and PlayGolf’s

who were just through the 11th and all going the way of Warley Park, Crondon needed to the matches to be turned around a quickly. As the matches arrived on the 14th Tee were the singles players waited, Gregg & Paul James (Warley) were 5 Up with 5 to play against Crondon’s John Fanning and Alan Parmenter. The Crondon pair then won the 14th to continue the game. The next match also came through 5 up to Warley pair of Paul Burges and Club captain Ivan North. They went on to half the 14th hole winning the game 5&4 against Crondon’s Chris Collins and Terry Laffar. The final game came to the 14th tee having seen the Crondon pair John Dunn and Andrew White fight back from being 3 down to 1 down against Warley’s Lyndon Jarvis and John Newman. As the last match teed off on the 14th news of the 1st pairs match reached the teams that they had halved the 15th hole and therefore giving the Warley pair a 4&3 win and the required point to reach the magical team score of 5 to win the match and take them through to the finals. The final game returned a 2&1 win to Warley giving them an overall match result of 6-3. Our thanks to Playgolf Colchester for their hospitality and providing a course in excellent condition.

he match pitted Crondon Park semi-finalist last year against Warley Park who were playing in the Jubilee cup for only the 2nd year pitted against each other. On a cool, and breezy but dry Saturday the teams played a friendly but highly competitive match hosted by Playgolf Colchester which saw Warley Park emerge as the winners 6-3 and progress to the final at Brentwood Golf Club on the 28th of September. Most games arrived at the ‘hut’ on the 14th tee with the results undecided. The one exception was in the 2nd game were Crondon’s Keith Wood beat Mark Downing 6&5 and therefore posting the first point on the board for Crondon. John Williams (Warley) quickly restored parity by putting in a captain’s performance by racing to a 5 hole lead which me maintained to beat Len Willis 5&4. Gary Curtis (Warley) beat Tony Efreme 3&2, before Brian English (Crondon) beat Nick Pulham 3&2 and therefore restoring the parity of the overall the match. With Peter Ballard (Crondon) fighting back from 4 down with 6 to play against Jon Fisher to win 2Up and Richard Butler (Warley) beating Ian Young in a tight match by birding the final hole to win it and the match 1up the singles completed with the match score level at 3-3. The attention of both teams then turned to the Pairs

I

am sorry to see Crondon Park and PlayGolf Colchester leave the 2014 competition, but the spirit of the Jubilee Cup was highly visible in the speeches at the meals, with even mention of an in-famous double-tap played out at Stock Brook Manor by the perpetrator! The Committee would like to thank our Semi venue host-clubs of PlayGolf Colchester and Stock Brook Manor for hosting our matches, and delivering such sterling set of courses and hospitality. We are ever thankful for the ability of clubs to host us at short notice, and they have all always come through to the benefit of the Jubilee Cup. For the 2014 Final, and thankful to our sponsors support, we are looking forward to being hosted by Brentwood Golf Club on Sunday 28th September when the deciding match will be completed to crown this year’s winners. See the website for final details! And of course full presentation in next month’s Essex Golfer. Despite 2014 not being over for us, we are already looking forward to 2015, and next year’s entry form for 2015 can be downloaded for completion and sending back to me at http://www.jubileecup.com/entryform2015.pdf All the Best, and now looking forward to the AGM and draw for 2015 - details of which will be forthcoming over the coming months. Chelmsford Retains Munro Foursomes Shield

T

he 36 hole final of the 2014 Munro Foursomes was played on 29th September 2014 between Chelmsford and Thorndon Park. West Essex Golf Club hosted the event and the course was presented in excellent condition. Chelmsford was represented by Kelly Martin and Amanda Hartman and Thorndon Park by Emily Irons and Sally Barber. In a topsy-turvy first 18 holes where there were only four holes halved Thorndon Parks early two hole lead was pegged back so that the teams were all square standing on the 16th tee. Two fine pars by the Chelmsford pair saw them go into lunch 2 up. The afternoon round proved tighter with eight holes halved and Chelmsford were still two up on the 30th hole following a fine birdie by Thorndon Park on the 26th hole. The tough par 5, 31st hole , proved crucial and a fine par by Chelmsford re-established a three hole lead which they held to the 34th hole where two magnificent shots to the middle of the strongly

uphill green gave them the match by 4 and 2. Congratulations to Chelmsford for retaining the Munro Foursomes Shield in 2014.

nother very successful and well supported Orsett Ladies Open day took place on Thursday August 28th 2014 with 124 Ladies entering from all over Essex, as well as Suffolk, Herfordshire and Kent. WINTER, AR E YOU PRE PARIN G?

T

he worst possible time for a competitive golfer is WINTER! Poor weather conditions and lack of competitions. Practice time goes down and for some golfers motivation goes too. For me, winter is the optimal time to get in good physical condition for the next season.

Flexibility, core stability, postural work, strength and power should be worked on throughout winter so that when the weather improves you are at your peak to start the new season. Flexibility is stage 1, to then move on to core stability + posture to strength and then to power. By progressively moving through the above you are creating a flexible, functional, strong and stable body. When achieving this your golf WILL improve. Flexibility will lengthen the short muscles and

correct imbalances. Core stability will involve strengthening the deep abdominal wall and the inner unit giving stabilisation through functional exercise. Strength training will build muscle and last but not least power will bring it all together resulting in a strong, stable, more powerful golfer that can hit the ball further, be more consistent and see their handicap drop whilst staying injury free! To achieve the above find start looking for a golf biomechanic or reputable personal trainer and now, prepare and book for November/December so you are focused. A professional is worth every penny as they can develop a regime to follow that is specific and tailored to your needs. I can highly recommend a book that comes around everywhere with me and when I am with my golfers; The Golf Biomechanics Manual; Whole In One Golf Conditioning by Paul Chek.

PGA Catalunya Resort to Host Seventh Consecutive European Tour Q School Climax

T

he European Tour Qualifying School Final Stage will return to PGA Catalunya Resort from November 15-20, 2014, where 156 players will battle it out over six rounds in an attempt to earn a European Tour card for The 2015 Race to Dubai. Located less than an hour from Barcelona in the north-east of Spain, the 36-hole European Tour Destination boasts two championship layouts alongside state of the art practice facilities, which include Spain’s largest chipping and putting green, measuring an expansive 2000m2 and featuring a unique set-up of five bunkers each containing different sand types (Augusta, St Andrews, Hawaii volcanic, PGA Catalunya Stadium Course and Pebble Beach) and different grass surfaces, including Bent, Bermuda, Paspalum and Poa, for practice putting. The first four rounds of the Final Stage are played over Spain’s No.1 course, the worldrenowned Stadium Course, designed by former European Tour Chairman Neil Coles and Vice Chairman Angel Gallardo, and the shorter and slightly less challenging Tour Course. The Stadium Course, which hosted The 2014 Open de España in May, won by home favourite

Miguel Angel Jiménez, is then the stage for the final two rounds, at the end of which the top 25 players plus ties gain their playing privileges for The 2015 Race to Dubai. As an indication of the Stadium Course’s pedigree, it has been listed in Golf World magazine’s ‘Top 100 Courses in the World’ and Golf Monthly magazine’s ‘Top 50 Courses in Continental Europe’, among others. European Tour Qualifying School Director Mike Stewart said: “PGA Catalunya Resort is a superb venue which has proved the perfect set-up for the Qualifying School Final Stage, year after year. This season will be the seventh time the climax to the Q-School has been staged there, and we are always welcomed back with open arms. “It is a stressful week for the players, but knowing they have two world-class courses on which to compete and arguably the best practice facilities in Europe at their disposal certainly helps. It promises to be another exciting conclusion to the long and winding road that is The European Tour’s Qualifying School.” www.pgacatalunya.com www.europeantour.com/ europeantour/qualifying
