Essex on Brink of Title After Second Big Win Essex are within touching distance of their third Boys County title after beating Wiltshire 6-3 on day two at Sandiway in Cheshire, while Durham bounced back from their opening day setback by overcoming Derbyshire 7-1 with one game halved. On the 28th August, Essex face Derbyshire and need only to tie to lift the title for the first time since 2004. Durham is the only county that can deprive them but they must beat Wiltshire and hope Essex lose heavily. Despite winning all three morning foursomes, Essex were given a fight by Wiltshire in the singles which were eventually shared 3-3. In the top game, James Wiltshire dented Todd

Clements 100% record by beating the Essex lad by one hole. Clements won the opening hole but a Wiltshire eagle at the long fourth levelled matters but it wasn’t until the 11th that he got ahead with successive birdies. Clements then birdied the 13th while a par at the next squared the contest again. They both birdied the par five 16th but when Wiltshire added another at 17 he stayed ahead to claim his narrow victory. Wiltshire added to their tally when Rhys Edwards overcame George Whitbread 4 and 2, while Jamie Amor secured his first singles win with a 2 and 1 score against Elliot Fullalove. Edwards reeled off three birdies in a row from the third to race 3up over Whitbread and although the Essex man pulled it back to 2 down at the turn he soon found himself 3down again when Edwards parred the tenth. Again Whitbread battled back to cut the deficit to 1down after 12 but a run of birdie-par-birdie from the 14th saw Edwards to victory. Amor won the opening two holes against Fullalove but the Essex lad eagled the fourth, hitting a threeiron close then squared matters with a birdie at five. But a run of pars enabled Amor to go 3up at the turn and 4up after ten. That was still the score after 14 but Fullalove won 15 and 16 with pars but couldn’t complete the climb. However, Essex took the other three games through Louise Lazarus, 4 and 2 over Charles Dunn, Bradley Bawden, 4 and 3 against Dom Patton, plus a 3 and 2 win for Taylor Carter over Tom Law. Adapting To The Times Over the last few months, I have had the good fortune to play a number of different courses around Essex and Suffolk. Through invitations and Media days, I have been able to assess many courses, although my golf has not been brilliant, the courses have been superb with holes to test the best of golfing skills. Many clubs are now adapting for the future due to rising costs and declining membership. Many 35 year olds and under are turning to new activities, due to the high cost of membership and the amount of time required for a round of golf. Some clubs in the UK are selling off land to generate funds for club house improvement and realignment of holes, also clubs are competing for all year round banquet and wedding business, as well as restructuring fees to attract new members. Should we improve communication and awareness between club and golfer as well as providing attractive opportunities to join clubs? Whatever improvements can be made-enjoy your golf!

This month sees the Ryder cup come to Glen Eagles and maybe for the first time Europe are clear favourites. As before this is a added bonus to the end of the season and hopefully we’ll see some spectacular golf to inspire us all. Like it or not we are moving into autumn/winter mode and this month we are promoting our new range of clothing from Daily sports, Adidas, Callaway, Ping, Oscar Jacobson, Underarmour, Proquip and Sunice. Sunice is the leading manufacturer of waterproofs in the United States and Canada and larger in size than Galvin Green. They offer men’s suits from £199 and we also have their top of the range men's Gortex suit in stock, in all sizes. All the clothing is both stylish, ideal for this time of year and just the job to continue playing in these changing conditions. Finally our 20th anniversary is approaching which will be a spectacular 5 day event where we will have outstanding offers (with limited numbers available on certain lines) prizes to be won and an extra bonus for everyone who spends £20 or more! Look out for next months edition in the Essex golfer which will be a 4 page special.

Consitent Contact Starts From the Ground Up. Of all the exciting, dare I say sexy parts of the golf shot, it always involves the club-face, the ball and its flight and distance. But all this starts from the ground upwards, creating stability balance and coil. Take a look at Picture 1, Its more than a full back swing, but my legs have collapsed. I've moved over to my right and have no coil as my hips and legs have turned too much with my shoulders. It's rather like trying to hit the ball standing on a water-bed! Picture 2 Now that’s much better my shoulders have rotated but most importantly my legs have held firm; my knees are in the same place, and I have been able to stay centred. From here it is a simple task to swing down to the ball and stay balanced. If you want to discover how the good back-swing in Picture 2 feels. Try this very tried and trusted drill, it is not new I was shown it by David Leadbetter when I was one of his teaching pros back in the middle 90’s
1
2
Set up as I am doing in Picture 3 notice how my knees are held in an athletic squat and ready position. Now coil your upper body to the top Picture 4, ideally do it slowly as you will be able to control your movements better, notice how my knees are held in the same position and because of this, I have not moved to my right in the back-swing. In essence, I am in the same place, just coiled (nb nothing to do with my head!). Picture 5 and 6 show the uncoiling of the swing into a balanced finish, balance is a learned skill so it may take a few attempts but please persevere, it will be worth it. Next issue more attention to detail, good golfing.

We have some really exciting news this month as we are delighted to announce our first ever Charity Partnership.
The PGA in Essex has become a charity partner with The Dream Factory which is an Epping based charity. The Dream Factory was set up several years ago by Avril Mills in memory of her son Oliver who died from Leukaemia aged 9. The Dream Factory grants dreams and wishes to bring hope and happiness for children and young
adults with life threatening illnesses or severe disabilities. The committee of the PGA in Essex decided recently that we should put something back into the Essex community and this year’s Captain Mark Bishop has selected The Dream Factory as the charity for his year. In addition David Hawkins, professional at Wanstead Golf Club and next year’s Captain has already confirmed that he will retain The Dream Factory as his chosen charity for next season. One of the county’s leading tournament professionals Simon Khan is a patron of The Dream Factory and he and Mark Bishop recently met Avril at Toot Hill Golf Club to cement the partnership. The Dream Factory will have a presence at our major tournaments this coming season and we will promote their work to all of our supporters. In addition, the PGA in Essex will be making a contribution to the charity for all the birdies and eagles which our members achieve during the season. This means that the better the pros play then the more money for the charity! For more information on the Dream Factory visit: www.yourdreamfactory.org
Mark Bishop, Avril and Simon Khan. ESSEX GOLF PROFESSIONALS REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR SUPPORT. PLEASE CONTINUE TO PARTICIPATE IN OUR EVENTS AND ENCOURAGE YOUR FRIENDS TO JOIN US FOR A GREAT DAY OUT. - 12 -

THE BURSTEAD GOLF • CLUB
Another fantastic piece of news this month is the win by Mark Davis, who is attached to Thorndon Park Golf Club, in the Scottish Senior Open at the Fairmont Course, St. Andrews. Mark made his debut on the European Seniors Tour in July this year and has already chalked up his first victory. In a blustery final day at the Scottish course, Mark was the only player to finish under par and won by 5 shots from his nearest rival. This win puts him into the top ten in the Order of Merit with several events left in which to further improve his position. Essex Professionals have continued their success in East Region events with the following wins: James Scade won at Colchester Golf Club with a great 6 under par 64 then picked up another win at Ingrebourne Valley on the par 3 course with a 3 under par 24. Chase Davis has also had two wins with a 4 under par 68 at Stock Brook Manor and an equally impressive 5 under par 67 at Saffron Walden Golf Club. Finally, Brett Taylor shot a 4 under par 67 at Old Fold Manor to take the honours. In Essex we have our rescheduled Junior Pro-Am at Colne Valley on Sunday 31st August and our first event of the season, the Essex PGA Championships and Championship Pro-Am at The Burstead on 7th/8th October. For more details contact the PGA in Essex by phone or e-mail as above. enjoy your game - 13 -

We have been sorry to see Stock Brook Manor, Woolston Manor, Thorpe Hall, and, last year’s Jubilee Cup champions Bentley Golf Club, leave the competition at this stage. That said, we are looking forward to the outcome of the two matches being played at PlayGolf Colchester and Stock Brook Manor to decide the 2014 finalists. On hand will be a number of our limited Jubilee Cup Committee to support – Neil Mitchell, Neil Wells, Colin Firth and myself will be soaking up the atmosphere and making the arrangements.
For the 2014 Final, and thankful to our sponsors support, we are looking forward to being hosted by Brentwood Golf Club on Sunday 28th September when the deciding match will be completed to crown this year’s winners. Despite 2014 not being over for us, we are already looking forward to 2015, and the new year entry form for 2015 can be downloaded for completion and sending back to me at www.jubileecup.com/entryform2015.pdf All the Best, and good luck in your matches! Lee Porter, the PGA Professional attached to Hylands Golf Complex in Chelmsford, has been voted Clubmaker of the Year by the Golf Clubmakers Association in the UK. Lee now ranks in the top ten custom-fit clubmakers throughout Europe. No wonder he counts 8 touring golf pros as customers, including the ever popular local Pro, Robbie Coles.
A friend of mine was lucky enough to spend some time with Rory McIIroy just before this years Open championship. Rory was hitting balls in a clinic for Nike Golf and discussing his equipment and what was surprising was the amount of clubs he carried in his bag. Rory had a two iron, a five wood, a hybrid and a selection of wedges which on the face of it could all do a similar job. When questioned Rory explained that he carried his five wood when playing in the United States, his hybrid for European golf and his two iron for links style courses. His wedge selection gave him versatility to play golf courses with different grasses and conditions.
consider a 3 or 4 iron” but I still see so many golfers ‘trying’ to make them ‘work’ – you don’t work for them, they work for you. In my opinion golfers would benefit far more by carrying another wedge or simply making the bag lighter!
Makes perfect sense, carry the clubs that suit the course that you are playing. Obviously for a Touring Professional they are regularly confronted with a different style of course but for club golfers this should not pose such a problem.
Play Better Golf Through Equipment Seminar Finally, just a quick reminder that I am running another seminar on the 24th September which will include a section on the bounce and sole grind on wedges, chipping and pitching technique and a more detailed look at golf shafts. Full details and tickets can be found on my website: www.leeportergolfsolutions.com
Look at where you play the majority of you golf and build your set around what you need to play your best golf, not what is seen to be a ‘conventional’ set of clubs. Years ago a set of clubs would have basically consisted of a driver, 3 wood, 5 wood, 3 – PW, SW and putter. Now your set can be anything – there is no standard. Another interesting aspect here is a quote from one of the greatest golf coaches ever, Butch Harmon. Butch said that “If you driver swing speed is under 100 mph don't even - 16 - 16 -

If at first you don’t succeed … Take a leaf out of Rory McIlroy’s book and dig your heals in, perseverance pays dividends in the end. Whether it’s a forthcoming tournament or to reduce your handicap start from your feet and work up. Work on stability, particularly your core, by undertaking sit ups, hip rolls, back extensions and spinal rotations. Nutritionally, eat food which enhance a smooth golf swing and prevents muscular and joint tightening. For example, either rotate your wrists or ankles and listen for any clicking. Frequent clicking in the joints can indicate either dehydration or a lack of beneficial oils in the diet. Choose Happy Eggs, with added Omega3, pumpkin seeds (for Omega6) and Flax seeds/Linseeds with Omega3/6/9. As the weather settles, add Extra
Virgin Olive Oil to salads and pour Sicilian or Tuscan Extra Virgin Olive Oil into a saucer and refrigerate for a perfect spread (much healthier than refined and overly processed margarine). Aim to step up oily fish and beneficial Vitamin E too. Crayfish and avocado salad or a mackerel salad would be ideal with added yellow and orange peppers to boost proxanthins. Don’t forget to add a sprinkle of Omega mix onto your salad and grated beetroot for its beneficial effect on heart health too. You’ll be knocking your handicap down before you know it!

Rochford Hundred Golf Club The Jewel in Essex Golfers looking for a combination of quality golf and first class facilities should look no further than Rochford Hundred Golf Club in Essex. Rochford Hundred is the only course in England with an active church within its grounds.
As part of the Rochford’s continuing investment in the golf course as well as substantial sums being invested in new irrigation and drainage, work is underway to provide cart and buggy paths throughout the course to ensure playability through the winter months.
Located just north of the Essex coastal town of Southend-on-Sea, and less than five minutes’ drive from Southend Airport, Rochford is well placed to attract golfers from all over the South East. Rochford Hundred is an historic golf club which has its home in a Grade 1 listed building that dates back to the late 15th century and a former home of Anne Boleyn. Now standing in superb settings the 6,221-yard parkland course which was designed by renowned golf course architect Frederick Hawtree, the beautiful parkland setting provides a subtle mix of holes to test all elements of a golfer’s skills. The par 4 fifth hole, is the toughest hole on the course and at 437 yards, even off the yellow tees, requires a long, accurate uphill drive over a pond and a ditch.Water comes into play on several holes, with a number of fiendishly-placed ditches and brooks. The superb, subtly burrowed greens and lush fairways will make sure that you have to play at your best to have a good score.
Once the game of golf is over, you can relax in the superb, friendly clubhouse, which can boast to being one of the world’s oldest, but there will be nothing old about the warm welcome that greets you. The investment in the future of the club continues internally with ambitious clubhouse enhancements which began in June 2013 including brand new modern locker, shower and changing areas, and the provision of new intimate dining room overlooking the 18th hole and an audio/visual conference suite for up to forty people.

APPROACHING FROM A
DIFFERENT ANGLE! I would like to share one of my drills with you to help those players who find it difficult to achieve a solid strike at impact with their iron shots. There may be a number of reasons for this so this is best to discuss with your Professional for the primary cause. However, if you hit any of the following types of shot with an iron this is an article relevant to your game. • A thin shot in which the bottom of the club strikes the ball on the way up • A shot with very little divot • The occasional high shot relative to the club being used • A shot in which the club strikes the turf behind the ball with a “shallow” type divot If this is you, I am pretty sure you will prefer to find your ball in the rough nestling on a nice lush piece of grass, rather than down the middle of the firm and bare parched Summer fairways we have been experiencing!
Are you the golfer who enjoys hitting your driver but really struggles to flight a long iron or even harder still to hit the dreaded 3 wood in the air? Your wedge play will quite often be a strength of your game. One of golf’s misconceptions is the necessity to “get underneath the ball” to lift it in the air. Many golfers try to achieve this by “falling backwards” with their weight remaining on the right leg (right handed golfer) prior to impact which will often exaggerate the strike issue. This is simply due to the angle at which the club is approaching the ball, which is too level or shallow so the drill below will help to create a more favourable angle to strike the ball.

Place the ball just in front of the duster/ towel and aim to strike the ball without hitting the towel! Start with the ball approximately 4” in front of the towel, assume your usual set up position then gradually move the ball closer to the towel or duster when the strike becomes more consistent. It is best to use a very thin towel or duster so the club does not snag on the backswing.

De Vere Launches New Tee Time Booking Website De Vere has further improved its all-round golfing experiences by launching a new dedicated website allowing golfers to book tee times at the renowned golf courses within the De Vere Hotels & Resorts portfolio. De Vere is already recognised for its premium facilities and hospitality across eight UK golf resorts, and a new online tee-time booking facility not only makes the process of booking the next game easier than ever before, but also offers the lowest available green fees. As part of the new fully interactive De Vere Golf website that was launched earlier in the year, www.dvteetimes.com has been launched, which allows members and visitors to book tee times at any of the golf resorts within the De Vere Hotels & Resorts portfolio. The new dedicated pages provide a simple booking process where golfers select their preferred resort, course and tee-time, whilst also being able to search for exclusive offers at each resort and enter unique promo codes, ensuring the site is a one-stop portal for booking golf at some of the UK’s best known golf resorts. Excited by the new developments, De Vere Golf Group Sales & Marketing Manager, Jamie Carroll, said: “We have always prided ourselves on being
able to provide the finest golfing experiences for more players across the UK, and the new website allows us to make the booking process as easy as possible whilst also providing the best green fee rates you will find anywhere on the internet. “It was vital for us to offer golfers the opportunity to book tee times whenever or wherever they want, on their mobile phones or laptops. It brings the process in-line with that in place for our hotel bookings, as we continually strive to improve the all-round experience of our members and guests. De Vere Golf is constantly searching for new and exciting ways of developing its digital experiences, and has introduced the revolutionary ‘Whole in One’app at a number of courses. The downloadable app, which is free to all golfers at De Vere resorts, offers fully interactive flyovers and GPS yardages for each hole. To celebrate the launch of this new website, De Vere Golf is offering an exclusive online offer of up to 75% off their next round for those who book their next tee time through www.dvteetimes.com before 30th September 2014. Golfers simply need to quote ‘Golf14’ upon booking to redeem the offer at any of the De Vere Golf resorts.

By George What a Year Colchester Golf Club’s week would not be complete without a mention of George Whitbread. After topping the Pro-Am two weeks ago with his team of juniors, followed last week by winning the Club Championship for the second year in succession, he celebrated his last year in the Junior Section by completing another double by winning the Junior Club Championship, also for the second year in succession. This double is unique. In the history of the Club, no single person has ever won both the Club and Junior Championships two years in succession. He led both the morning and afternoon rounds, putting together a 71 and a 72 to total 143.This gave him a clear ten shots from next home, which was Tom Miller whose morning round of had 80 let him down. He followed that up with a much better crafted 73 in the afternoon. Will his year now be complete? There are few who would bet against him.

competition back in April where the top eight pairings went through to the knockout stages. Starting out on an unusually damp day Dennis and Deman had held the upper hand until the 13th hole when the match was pulled back to all square by Johnston and Clark. Johnston and Clark then pared 14th and 15th holes to go two up, and with a par on the 16th won the match being three holes up with just the two to play.

Swing
The Obliques Make A Better Every golfer wants to hit the ball further and with more POWER! One fine way of helping this is to strengthen and build the obliques. In fact, if these muscles on the sides of your stomach are weak, you’ll really struggle to make solid contact with the ball. Muscles of the Trunk Pectoralis Major
Rectus Abdominis
External Oblique
Internal Oblique
you extend your hips and tilt your pelvis, while keeping your chest over the golf ball. To put it very simply, the stronger your obliques are, the more power and speed you will achieve in your swing. So how do you start strengthening and building the obliques? The next exercise is an example if an oblique exercise but I highly recommend you seek a professional and get a golf specific bespoke exercise programme. The Russian Twist: Using a Swiss ball, lay supine on the ball with the head neck and top of shoulders only on the ball, hips straight and the glutes squeezed to keep the hips up.Whilst keeping the eyes to the ceiling, hold the hands together above the chest and turn using the obliques from one side to the other. Find this exercise on YouTube for a video demonstration.
Transverse Abdominis

When you swing efficiently, you should load your obliques as you coil towards the top of your backswing, elongating (stretching) them to achieve the correct position at the top. In the downswing, your obliques, together with the psoas major, are highly activated, creating a crunch-like position as - 36 -

The nights may be closing in but there’s still plenty of golf left to report on!
Essex Boys Championship & Boys Club Team Championship The 2014 Boys Championship was held at Thorndon Park Golf Club on 29th July and greeted with warm sunny weather and a course in pristine condition the golf did not disappoint. Taylor Carter (Rochford Hundred) recorded the best morning score of 68 (3 under par), earning Taylor the chance to go through to the final stages of The Telegraph Junior Championships, sponsored by BMW. One shot back in 2nd was Louis Lazarus (Romford) with Elliot Fullalove (Braintree) solo 3rd on 1 under par, 70. The afternoon’s golf was no less entertaining as the top 3 players continued to jostle positions until the very end. After 18 holes Louis Lazarus finished in 3rd place with a 1 under par 141 finishing total and at the end of regulation play, joint at the top with 4 under par totals were Taylor Carter and Elliot Fullalove. The Boys Championship rules dictate ties must be decided by a playoff and as such, both players took to the 1st extra hole – each with the Trophy in mind. It was Taylor Carter however, carding a birdie on the 1st playoff hole that took this year’s Championship and the plaudits that go with it. In the U16 section of the Championship Jack Dyer (Rochford Hundred) prevailed by 1 shot over Ryan Cox (Warley Park) and won with a finishing score of 1 over par 143. Running in conjunction with the Boys Championship is the Boys Club Team Championship, with the scores from two nominated players or the lowest handicap players’ scores counting as the clubs total. This year’s winners were Braintree, represented by Todd Clements and Elliott Fullalove with a total score of 284. In second place were Bradley Bawden and Jack Dyer from Rochford Hundred with 288. The Essex Golf Union would like to thank Thorndon Park Golf Club for their hospitality on the day and efforts in providing a course in such great condition. - 39 -

Sir Michael Bonallack Trophy & Colts Championship The Sir Michael Bonallack Trophy, 36 holes of scratch stroke play, was first played in 2007 and is open to all age groups. We are very proud that the Colts Championship is now played in conjunction with this prestigious event, open to all who are under 21 years of age. This year’s Sir Michael Bonallack Trophy, played at Thorpe Hall Golf Club, was won by Arthur Leonard (Rochford Hundred) who returned a 2 under par gross score of 140, shooting an eventful morning 72 which included a Hole in One on the 173yd par 3 16th and an afternoon round of 68 to beat 2nd place Jonathan Hewett (Clacton on Sea) by 2 shots and 3rd place Mitchel Sarling (Rochford Hundred) by 5. Arthur also took the plaudits in the Handicap section of the Trophy beating Ben Rendell (Clacton on Sea) by 2. The Colts Championship was won by Jonathan Hewett with Mitchell Sarling runner up and Scott Hudson (Braintree) in third. Our thanks to Thorpe Hall Golf Club for their hospitality and work in hosting this event, we hope this to be the start of a long lasting partnership.
Under 14 Championship & Fred Stillwell Trophy This year’s U14 Championship & Fred Stillwell Trophy saw records broken when Chelmsford’s Michael Gilbert ran away with both titles, the first by 10 shots and the second by 5. The U14 Championship is an 18 hole scratch stroke play competition open to boys only with The Fred Stillwell Trophy an 18 hole handicap stroke play competition open to both girls and boys. Played concurrently this year’s event saw over 50 juniors participate at Maylands Golf Club on 12th August, all were left chasing Gilbert’s totals. In the U14 Championship Michael’s gross finishing score of 67 (4 under par) set a new record low for the event, with worthy runner up Callum Hensby (Stoke by Nayland) carding a gross 77. In the Fred Stillwell Trophy Michael Gilbert’s net 64 was good enough to beat runner up Abbey Downton’s (Crondon Park) net 69, Abbey taking second spot ahead of Carter Rowe (Chelmsford) on count back. - 40 -

Under 12 Championship & Brian Fuller Trophy This year’s event saw 30 girls and boys dodge threatened thunderstorms and bad weather to play what was some excellent golf around Maldon Golf Club’s challenging 9 hole layout. The U12 Boys championship was won by Harry Wood (Langdon Hills) with a gross 84, narrowly beating Daniel Nicolls (Frinton) on countback and third placed Billy Gunyon (Rochford Hundred) by 2 shots. The winner of the Brian Fuller Trophy, carding a nett 66, was Ralph Carroll (Chelmsford) with Harry Wood second by 1 shot and Billy Gunyon again taking third with a nett 68. With Brian Fuller having done so much for the Essex Golf Union and junior golf in particular it was fitting to see so many young players compete for his Trophy.
Under 14 Junior Golf Tour The U14 Junior Golf Tour sponsored by the Norman Garon Trust was met with sunshine all day at Langdon Hills Golf Club on 31st July and with many regular supporters away playing in other nationwide events others were able to shine. Even with the regulars playing it would have taken a strong performance to beat Harry Moncur’s (Langdon Hills) 1 over par score which was good enough to secure Harry both the Scratch and U14 Handicap prizes on the day. In the U13 section Harley Smith (Rayleigh) who is not yet nine played off 28 to win the net prize from James Claydon (Boyce Hill). The girls section Scratch prize was won by Ashley Chalmers (Thorndon Park), with Ysobel Lush (Langdon Hills) being beaten on count back. In the Handicap competition Sophie Wheeler scored a net 68 to beat Ashley Chalmers on count back. Monthly Fixtures & Events Round-Up County Team There was only one main County team fixture in August, held at Stoke-by-Nayland Golf Club on 3rd August versus Hertfordshire. Overall it was a comfortable fixture for the side, winning 3 out of 4 morning foursomes matches and further solidifying their position throughout the afternoon’s singles to triumph 7 points to 5 without ever falling behind. Under 18’s The South East Golf Union’s County Junior Foursomes took place on 20th21st August at Felixstowe Golf Club. 9 Counties meet in this 2 day fixture and after meeting Surrey & Suffolk followed by Hampshire & Sussex on day 1 the County U18’s side were in a strong position, securing 9.5 out of a possible 12 points from the days play. As day 2 began the side still had matches to play against BB&O, Middlesex, Kent & Bedfordshire before any thoughts of a victory could be contemplated.Things began well with both matches won against BB&O and Middlesex and a 2 point margin over Kent on the leaderboard, leaving the afternoons matches make or break. Eventually final results saw Essex in a tie for first place with Kent but with the winner crowned by which County had won the most games overall Essex were declared winners by a margin of 1.5 points. Under 16’s The tail end of July saw the County U16’s team in action versus Kent and Surrey at Southern Valley Golf Club. With some of the squad playing in England Golf’s Carris Trophy on the same day the fielded side included six players under 15 and was a mix of youth and experience. The Southern Valley Course and its exposed hills made for some tricky shot selection throughout the day and despite some heavy and threatening weather and some bad luck the U16’s side were able to secure a commendable result, level on 28 points with Surrey and losing by 6 to Kent’s 34 point total. A final word of congratulations must go to County player Ryan Cox (Warley Park), who produced an outstanding display of golf in the Carris Trophy, missing out on winning the prize for best U16 player (Hazards Salver) by just one stroke. In their Inter Counties League the U16’s side played Kent and Sussex on home soil at Warley Park Golf Club on 7th August. With all three sides level on 10 points after the morning’s foursomes, as often tends to be the case in these matches the afternoon’s singles left everything to play for. Unfortunately such is the nature of the scoring system adopted in this league that one closely contested match lost can make a huge difference as proved to be the case. A defeat against Sussex converted to a win would have left all three teams on 30 points, but this was not to be and when the totals had been added up Sussex won by two points from Kent, with Essex a further two points adrift. 6 days later the Eastern Region U16 Championship took place at Eaton Golf Club and with the North of England Boys Championship up and coming this was the last opportunity for a number of the County U16 team to perform for Essex at this age group. The Championship sees two trophies contested for,The George Skevington Salver for the individual stroke-play champion and the Bob Bagshaw Trophy for the leading team. The Bagshaw Trophy is a 27 hole event with the winning team determined by adding the best three gross scores to the best three nett scores. The individual stroke-play champion and winner of the - 42 -

Skevington Salver being the lowest scratch score, contested over the afternoon 18 holes. With the strongest team on paper Essex had the best of the morning scores and as the afternoon progressed any near par score looked in with a chance of winning. However it wasn’t long before Essex’s Jack Dyer (Rochford Hundred), who started his round with two birdies, had holed out on the 18th to post an excellent 5 under par 66 and breeze 2 shots clear of his closest rival Sam Byford to take the individual title. Once calculations had been completed The Essex team were also declared winners of the Bob Bagshaw Trophy with Suffolk a close second only 3 points behind. The U16 side can be justly proud of their achievement and were a credit to the County Golf Union. Seniors Berkshire Golf Club played host to the County Seniors side for their tie against BB&O on 28th July. Heavy downpours only added to the difficulty faced by the County side, up against an extremely opposition team that in the end proved too strong and ran out victors by 7 ½ points to 2 ½. 2 weeks later saw the Seniors in action again, this time against Hertfordshire, an opponent that has been a thorn in the team’s side over the years and often a fixture that ended in defeat. However despite early showers it proved to be a sunny afternoon for the side in more ways than one. Despite proceedings being fairly level at the 9 hole half way point the teams confidence that things were going their way shone through and when Tommy Dods sealed a 4&3 victory for the final point needed the narrow but well deserved victory was confirmed. Final score Essex 6 points, Hertfordshire 4. Under 14’s The County U14’s side were in action at the Keith Bass Trophy held at Pavenham Park Golf Club, Bedford on Tuesday 19th August. The annual team competition pits Essex, Suffolk, Bedfordshire and Norfolk against each other with the best 3 gross scores added to the best 3 nett scores from a team of 8. Michael Gilbert (Chelmsford) recorded the lowest 27 hole gross score with 111, 3 over par, followed by Harry Robson (Orsett) on 115. The County side also took the main team competition by 9.5 points with a total score of 674 to second place Suffolk’s 683.5. Please turn over

Team competitions The Norman Plum Trophy semi-finals were played on Sunday 17th August and the results see a final fixture pitching The Essex & Stock Brook Manor against each other on Sunday 14 September at Colne Valley Golf Club. Congratulations to both sides and good luck in the Final. August has also seen the County Inter-Club Youth Shield quarter-final fixtures played and the semifinal fixtures drawn as below: Warley Park vs Braintree Rochford Hundred vs Thorndon Park Both matches will be played on Sunday 31st August.
Other News The England Golf Junior Champion Club competition was held over the Bracken Course at Woodhall Spa Golf Club on Sunday 9th August, three young golfers from Warley Park – Sophie Wheeler, Elisha Cox and Joseph Defries, represented Essex in this 36 hole stapleford that was unfortunately abandoned shortly after round 2 commenced due to weather. With the winners announced from the day one leaderboard the comparatively young Essex team finished in 27th place and gave an excellent, battling performance on what was a long course with tricky greens in testing weather. Congratulations to Sophie, Elisha and Joseph. The second Ingrebourne Links challenge trophy was once again blessed with fine weather when its field embarked on the clubs new par 3 course on 5th August. A slightly smaller field than last year gathered to play two rounds of challenging golf on a course in superb condition. This year some of the youngsters were a little more prepared for the clever layout of the course, designed by Alan Walker, and there were some impressive scores recorded. Playing off 35, Brandon Eiffert took the main prize with a score of 71 (net 36) to win by a distance over Luke Thornton who posted a net 41 to claim second spot on countback over Harvey Sullivan and Samuel Oakes. Despite neither winning on the day, particular mention must also go to Harvey Sullivan and Ryan Smith for their considerable achievements. Harvey posting a gross score of level par across the two rounds off a handicap of 13 and Ryan a gross 69 playing off 36 giving a great net 33 result. There were age group competitions and other side tests throughout the day, the results of which can be found on the Essex Golf Union website. The Essex Golf Union would like to express their thanks to John Pryor, Andy Clark and all at Ingrebourne Valley Limited for making the course available to us and for providing the considerable sponsorship that makes this event such a success. Fun Drills to Work with on the Range
Working on your technique is great and very important.Try the drills below, which will help to improve your skill and make practicing more fun and challenging. These drills are difficult but will challenge but aim to get gradually better at them over time.
Right Arm Only Take your normal address and then take the back of your left hand and put it just below your right elbow. By putting the left hand there, you will be able to get the right elbow into the correct position, this will encourage you to turn your shoulders properly. Aim to get your right arm into a throwing position just like you would when you throw a ball a long way with your shoulders turned. The right arm should make an L shape, aim to copy the pictures below. Make a number of practice swings following this, ensuring that you can follow this with the right technique. Once you feel comfortable then you can hit some shots.
Left Arm Only Take your normal stance then put your right hand behind your back. For most people, this will be their weaker arm. Aim to turn your shoulders properly also to get your left thumb under the shaft when you are at the top of your swing and arm extended as well. On the way through let your left arm fold. Again, aim to copy the below pictures.
- 48 -
Step Drill This drill will help you to start the downswing from the ground up. Take your address position with a club and then bring both feet together. Then make your backswing and stop at the top. At the top of the backswing the first move you make is a step with your left foot forwards and then swing through to your finish. It is important that the step is the correct width and should be at the same point where it would be for a normal shot or back to shoulder width. Again do this slowly to begin with and stop at the top of the backswing before starting the step. As you improve you can gain confidence.
Would you like to get more confident and achieve consistency in your golf? If so Matt is offering a free 30 minute consultation to Essex Golfer readers. Please call Matt on 07808 003 619 to book your consultation.

Already an AA 4 star hotel, the venue has also now just been upgraded by Visit England to 4 star Silver status. The refurbishment has taken the hotel into a new era of luxury. Interior designer Lindsey Rendall of Rendall & Wright took inspiration from the fruit farm which surrounds the two championship golf courses and thus created a tangible link between these two elements of the family business. Lindsey was also instrumental in designing the exquisite interiors of new luxury lodges. For the Reception area Lindsey has worked with Fromental to design four installations of stunning silk walling which create a real wow factor for arriving visitors. Seven elegant seating areas with classic shaped furniture provide wonderful spaces to meet friends, take afternoon tea or evening drinks. Wooden framed armchairs with citrus coloured chevron fabrics provide a pop of colour against the soft grey backdrop whilst bespoke rugs featuring a blossom design ensure the space feels
luxurious. Three lighting circuits have been installed to enable the mood to be altered to any occasion. Bright down lights, atmospheric recessed ceiling lights and low level lamps for intimate evenings. Ceiling speakers have been installed music and underfloor heating ensured the space feels warm all year round. Ida Bunting Memorial Trophy 2014 The Ida Bunting Memorial Trophy is the Society of Essex Lady Captains annual knockout match play competition. Each year, clubs in the county are encouraged to run a qualifying competition for past and present lady captains and qualifiers proceed to the knockout stage the following year. The 2014 competition started with 48 entrants and the semi finals were completed recently. The first semi final took place at Stock Brook Manor between Lesley Allsuch of Abridge and Linda Woods of Royal Epping. The match was very close but played in a very friendly manner and some great shots were played, however Lesley took command of the match as the game went on and claimed the victory to go through to the final. Thanks to Stock Brook Manor for hosting the match and to Brenda Paton of Stock Brook who refereed the match. The second semi final was held at Benton Hall between Sue Hilton of Boyce Hill and Joan Parkes of Ballards Gore. After a light lunch the two players with caddies and some members of the Committee set off, the course was very well presented. Both competitors played very good golf at times and at the beginning there was not much between them, but as the match went on Joan Parkes steadily increased her lead, culminating in her victory. Thanks to Benton Hall for hosting the semi final and Lynne Kirkham for refereeing the match. Jan Collier, Lady President of the Society, presented mementos to Linda Woods and Sue Hilton for their achievement in reaching the Semi Finals. Congratulations to both Lesley and Joan for winning their semi final matches and best wishes for the Final. The 4 semi finalist are pictured below with Jan Collier Lady President and Lin Fazzani Ida Bunting Organiser. - 53 -

Ladies Wanted At Belhus Park Golf Club We are looking to revive our lady membership, here at Belhus Park Golf Club. Sadly, the section folded at the end of 2008, due to dwindling numbers, but we miss them greatly and want them back. We aren’t looking to encroach on other Clubs’ members and while we would welcome anyone with open arms, we would also like to attract new ladies to the honorable game. There is a fantastic teaching set-up, for individuals or groups, under Head Professional Jamie Gowan and his assistant Shaun Westfall. They also organise special lady-day events, to introduce aspiring golfers to the game. The Club itself can offer them a blank sheet of
paper, to start the section from scratch, including a place on the committee for their captain and/or secretary. Impulse Leisure, who run the course on behalf of Thurrock Council, can offer preferential tee-times and value-for-money rates. They will have official CONGU handicaps, individual, team and mixed competitions and as and when we have enough lady members of a certain standard, they will tell us when they are ready to enter County and National competitions. There is a very friendly, welcoming and open atmosphere at the Club. Anyone interested in discussing this further, or wanting more details can contact Club Secretary David Clifford on 07775 861 522, or the Professional's shop on 01708 854 260.

b u l C f l o G t t e s r O y a D s ’ n i a t p a C Lady Captain’s Day at any Golf Club is always a big event in every club’s golfing calendar but at Essex's Orsett Golf Club, the Lady Captain's Day is a uniquely themed event linked to her personality, background and interests.
The theme for 2014 Lady Captain Margaret Oliver was the “1st ORSETT CUB SCOUTS CAMP JAMBOREE.” In honour of Margaret’s time as Akela in the Scout movement and a theme she no doubt expected. However, there were to be plenty of surprises throughout the day. The first surprise was her arrival at the club on a MOTOR BIKE, DRESSED IN LEATHER, to the music, LEADER OF THE PACK!
It’s a closely guarded secret as to what the day will hold for her, she is banned from attending the club for the 2 days prior to the event. Planning starts a year in advance where the Vice Captain, who is responsible for organizing the day, starts to come up with ideas and plan the big day. For weeks in advance everyone at the club, apart from the guest of honour, are involved in the discussions and plans for bringing the themes for the day to life!
Margaret was a ‘biker chick’ in previous years riding on the back of her husband Dave’s bike. The Orsett Ladies dressed as Cubs, Scouts, Brownies, or Guides, and the Buggy she would use for the day, was transformed into the “Camp Bus”
- 56 -
fully loaded with all necessary camping equipment, tents, sleeping bags, etc, for taking the cub scouts to the “Gilwell Park” camp, which was recreated on the 7th tee. Here male members, dressed as cub scouts carried out “Bob a Job” cleaning clubs raising money for Margaret's charity.
English Schools Golf Association
Margaret is known for singing – especially Karaoke – so “OLIVER'S WINE & KARAOKE BAR” was created at the 12th Tee, complete with glitter ball, strobe lights, microphone stand and of course, the singing!
The Essex Schools Golf Championships are to be held on
Monday 20th October at Langdon Hills Golf Club. Entry forms can be obtained from the Essex Golf Union Website or from June Morgan on Jsm2000uk@tiscali.co.uk
www.englishschoolsgolf.org
In true fashion, the Wine bar had two doormen to ensure only those on the VIP list, or paying a donation to Margaret’s Charity, gained entry into the Wine Bar. As each team of players arrived at the “Wine Bar” they enjoyed a glass of Pimms and had a spot of Karaoke. The standard was so high that Margaret awarded a prize to the best performance. They were asked to repeat their rendition of ‘Runaway’ by Del Shannon during the evening’s festivities. The day raised £500 for Margaret’s charity Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) a local charity which is very close to Margaret’s heart. Despite the rain that fell on the day, the 18 hole non-qualifying stableford competition was enjoyed by everyone with some great scores coming in. The Overall Winner for the Day, Angie Paton scored a magnificent 41 points off her 8 handicap. The Silver Winner, Jane Dennis, close behind on 40 points. It is safe to say that the plotting has already started for the next year’s Lady Captain’s day at Orsett Golf Club.
Essex Players Fight It Out On Jamega Pro Golf Tour Dale Whitnell from Forrester Park Golf Club wins at Aldwickbury Park. Whitnell birded the last hole on the final day to force a playoff with Ricky Brackenbury from Orsett Golf Club. Both players tied for first place at 6 under par for tournament. Brackenbury and Whitnell headed off to the tenth tee for the play-off. Brackenbury hit a driver into the water hazard on the first play off hole handing Whitnell a chance of victory. Whitnell hit a rescue club to the fairway, and a second shot to the green and had a two putt for victory. A winning cheque for £4,000 took Whitnell into the lead for the race to the 2015 “Portugal Masters” Order Of Merit. Both players are coached by Gary Pike from Forrester Park Golf Club.

Sarah Bennett Challenge Cup Golf Fore Recovery
After three years of hard work to steadily introduce and develop golf to the residents of Help For Heroes Chavasse VC House recovery centre, Sarah Bennett, PGA Golf Professional and former Ladies European Tour player was finally able to present the Sarah Bennett Golf Fore Recovery Cup which she donated. Three Recovery centres from Colchester, Catterick and Tidworth accepted the invitation to participate in Bennett’s inaugural Golf Fore Recovery Cup which was run as a Texas scramble format. The SB Challenge cup was won by the team from the Phoenix Recovery Centre who were delighted with their victory. The event, which was the brainchild of Sarah Bennett, was played for the first time at Three Rivers Golf & Country Club where Sarah is the Head Teaching Professional. The venue boasts two lovely courses which are ideally suited for range of standards and are in excellent condition offering exceptional value for money. Sarah’s idea has been something she has wanted to introduce since her initial Tournament two years ago was solely for the residents to encourage their competitive edge and overall well-being. Sarah’s first event two years ago raised enough funds to purchase the first ever piece of golfing equipment for Chavasse VC House which has now developed into a 6 hole Huxley putting green and two nets which Sarah utilises during her coaching sessions. “It was a real pleasure to meet many of the new players at the event and also to catch up with old friends who attended my first day two years ago,” said Sarah. “The feedback from the lads far exceeded my expectations which give me a
massive amount of pleasure and satisfaction knowing the extent golf can impact someone lives so profoundly. “My goal is to make the event an annual fixture and I have further visions of how to develop the SB Golf Fore Recovery Cup over the years which I hope will happen with possible external funding. I am grateful for Three Rivers Golf Club for hosting the day and with their continued support with my on-going activities.” Sarah is no stranger to growing the game of golf as she has introduced over 360 school children and 200 ladies over the past three years to the game and has delivered a feel inspired disability day with two school experience days to over 200 children with disabilities and assists with the ISPS Handa Golf day on behalf of the Ladies European Tour. Beefy’s Boost for GDScore
What do Sir Ian Botham, Arsenal star Aaron Ramsay and corporate giants Tesco and Barclays have in common?
Callaway Big Bertha V Series Speed Optimized Technology A lightweight design starting at 290 grams.A lighter club helps create more clubhead speed, which helps create more ball speed, which helps you hit the ball a long way. Aerodynamic shaping lowers drag through the entire swing to give you faster swing speeds. Forged Composite material in the crown that’s lighter, leading to maximum clubhead speed for higher ball speed. Hyper Speed Face There’s that word “speed” again. This proven face technology delivers higher ball speeds across the face so you consistently hammer long drives. Lighter, hotter (of course) and more robust to help produce those increased ball speeds. OptiFit Technology An adjustable hosel that lets you choose from a combination of 8 different loft (-1, S, +1, +2) and lie angles (Draw or Neutral) to find your optimized trajectory and shot shape.
They’ve all recently used the new GDScore live scoring system to give players on their golf days the pro tournament experience. And they’ve been joined by many other companies and leading Golf Clubs who have enhanced their events with GDScore. Until now, live scoring has been an expensive luxury, which can be too costly for many Golf Clubs to justify. But GDScore, developed by Norfolk-based Golf Days UK, is a cost-effective answer to that dilemma. It provides a flexible scoring system for all sorts of formats – from members’ regular events to the100plus charity day or the yearly Pro-Am. GDScore has great benefits for Golf Clubs, providing income opportunities through targeted advertising and corporate branding. GDScore is simple to use. Each group of players is provided with a device to record their own scores and they can see the scores of other players or teams in the competition in real time. The scores are transmitted to a live leaderboard in the clubhouse and they can also be seen through social media so friends and family can follow an event. “GDScore is provided to Golf Clubs through a licence agreement, ” says Ben Phillips of Golf Days UK, “but for a limited period we may be able to offer some Clubs GDScore on a trial basis.” www.golfdaysuk.co.uk

Nike Golf Unveils Vapor Iron Franchise
The Iron Reimagined Nike Golf has reimagined golf irons with the introduction of its new Vapor franchise – Vapor Pro, Vapor Pro Combo, and Vapor Speed. The modern family of irons was unveiled to a global media audience today near New York City during an event featuring Nike athletes Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, and celebrity golf aficionado Jimmy Fallon. The Vapor irons blend the detailed craftsmanship of Nike’s master club builder, Mike Taylor; the engineering expertise of The Oven; and the imagination of Nike designers. The result; a family of irons featuring a pinnacle Nike innovation called Modern Muscle.
“We were inspired by the fact that traditional blades all look the same and challenged ourselves to rally around a big idea taken from Tiger’s insights,” said Nike Golf Design Director, Andrew Oldknow.“Our goal was to create a visual look on the exterior of the club that defines what’s happening on the inside. Shifting weight away from the heel of the club for a more precise centre of gravity is what defines Modern Muscle, and that is distinctly visible across the three iron designs. The Vapor irons will be available from January 31, 2015. Confirmed prices and specs will follow in due course. www.nike.com/nikegolf
Modern Muscle is a modification of a standard muscle-back design that moves the iron’s centre of gravity to the centre of the clubface, crafted to yield more efficient and pure strikes. The innovation has already contributed to a major championship victory when Rory McIlroy put a prototype Vapor Pro Combo 2-iron (MM Proto) in the bag and went on to win the 2014 Open Championship. While Rory was the first to win with Modern Muscle in the bag, the innovation itself started with insights from Tiger Woods. “Our engineers and designers at The Oven have been working with Tiger for quite some time to evolve this innovation and bring it to the golf athlete,” said Rob Arluna, Nike Golf’s Global Golf Club Business Director. “We started with the traditional blade and asked what could be done to enhance its performance and modernize the design while maintaining a traditional, pure look at address. Thanks to Tiger’s inspiration, coupled with Rory’s added insights, we made the Vapor Pro blades feel and perform better with a technology advantage over the traditional blade. We then extended that innovation and design to Vapor Pro Combo and Vapor Speed.” irons. - 61 -
