STOKE BY NAYLAND TO HOST ENGLISH DISABILITY OPEN ntries are now being invited for the 2019 E English Disability Open, which is being held at Stoke by Nayland Golf Club in Essex from

modified rules of golf for players with a disability. As well as being open to anyone with an impairment, the event will provide points for the WR4GD rankings for qualifying players. Among those expected to enter are defending champion Mick Horsley and current world No.1 on the rankings for disabled golfers, George Groves, of Addington Palace Golf Club in Surrey. Jamie Blair, Disability Manager for England Golf commented: “We want this to become an event which is about the golfing ability rather than the impairment. We’ve been working closely with EDGA to broaden the criteria and are proud that this event will be more inclusive than ever and is a national championship for golfers with a disability playing at our affiliated golf clubs and further afield. As well as being open to anyone with an impairment, the event will provide points for the WR4GD rankings for qualifying players. We have also adopted the rules modifications in all of our England Golf championships to encourage further participation in all of the events that we run.” Competitors will play for the overall gross prize, and a handicap competition or a Stableford event, depending on their handicap. Full terms of competition and online entry can be found on the England Golf website www.englandgolf.org.

JAMES MULLENGER DREAM SHOT

N

otley’s Golf Club nine handicapper James Mullenger, achieved the golfers dream, and a perfect contribution to the club Winter League Pairs competition, by holing out on his tee shot for his Hole in One, on the most difficult Par Three we have at Notleys. Playing in the final weekend of the Notley’s Golf Club annual “Winter Pairs” league competition, with playing partner Rob Heard, James tee’d off on the Par 3 second hole, which can play over 203 yards, and smashed a fantastic three wood to see the ball finish in the hole for an eagle one, and 4 points for the competition. As Rob described after the event “He hit a lovely draw with a 3 wood, and it was heading for the flag stick all the way. It disappeared out of sight and when we got to the green it was in” In itself a wonderful achievement to have, and James’ contribution for the pair saw them taking third place in the entire Winter League competition, with their joint performance on the day seeing them 7th, and narrowly missing out on the runners up position by a single league point.

That particular honour went to Kevin Whybrew and Phil Redhead, who were over-shadowed by a sterling performance throughout the Winter by partners Dave Wren (himself making a Hole in One in January!) and Mark “there’s only one on the sofa” Fletcher – neither ranking outside of seventh position in each of the monthly competitions. James’s dream shot will be immortalised in the Notleys Clubhouse on our Hole in One Honours Board. Well done James, richly deserved and doubly impressive given the consistent partnership approach through the winter. .

SAM HANDLES THE CONDITIONS

F

orty points in Colchester Golf Clubs CHAPS Stableford saw Sam Tarr comfortably win the Club’s second charity stableford. On a day when it was touch and go whether the competition was playable, Tarr’s round in near gale conditions was to be applauded. In the more extreme parts of the course balls were at times oscillating and on the brink of moving on the greens. Nevertheless, for the second week in succession, over 100 hardy members, fought on. The competition supports a Colchester men’s health charity, which aims to raise awareness and support the development of new health services directly targeted to men’s needs. Tarr’s two birdies and six pars off a handicap of nineteen gave him 40 points, which was always going to be difficult to beat in the conditions. Nearest to Tarr were two golfers on 38 points. One was last week’s winner Carl White (20), who after having had his handicap cut by two continues to show form and Dick Bokenham (13) also in joint runner-up spot, but losing out after a countback to take third place with Lewis Barber (5) on 37 taking fourth.

The Club has supported the CHAPS charity since 2003. The charity aims to raise awareness and provides tests for common male problems such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and prostate cancer. Its next Men’s Health Day Clinic will be held on the 11th April at the JobServe Community Stadium Colchester. There are other numerous clinics planned during 2019, throughout Suffolk and Essex. Anyone interested please check out the website - www.chaps.uk.org - for full details.

ITS HERE! Spring Has Sprung

bet as golfers you are all over the moon to see Isunshine. the spring arrive! Crisp mornings with bright This time of year almost ignites a fire in

golfer’s belly's again ready for the season ahead of them. So how do you keep up “keeping fit” and playing golf? The truth is, if you have been working all winter on your body you should be able to just carry on! Your gym schedule may change, maybe even reduce in the spring/summer but should never ever stop! Flexibility work would usually increase at this time of year ... to counteract all the golf! More mobilisations and a little less gym work. The graft to get your body in good golfing shape should be done ... now its putting all that hard work to use and maintaining it throughout the spring/summer. What happens if you have done nothing through the winter? Hmmmm, well this could leave you vulnerable to injury with the sudden increase of golf! How can you counteract that? Get a coach and get stretching and mobilising with some gentle core and posture work! Its never too late! Looking after your body in these coming months is vital if you want to have a full season

injury free! Golf is heavy on the body, therefore, stretch, mobilise, have massage and look after it pre and post golf. Take time to warm up, take time to cool down and ensure you are fuelling your body correctly round the course. Heaps of water, high protein snacks and regular food! Invest in a foam roller! This is the most amazing self massage tool you can take anywhere that will free you up and make you move more fluidly! I highly recommend you foam roller the lower body pre and post golf concentrating on the ITB, Quadriceps, hamstrings, calf muscles. If you YouTube lower body foam rolling you will get a video to follow. Also YouTube gluteus medius and piriformis mobilisations. Use a tennis ball or harder and have a go! These mobilisations will 100% improve your movement for your game. Let me know how you get on! Enjoy the sunshine and getting out playing the game you love!

Happy Spring!

Honesty is Always The Best Policy …

hen you have been in golf as long as I have there are certain similarities that you notice with regards to conversations that golfers have. By this I mean that the majority of male golfers will say they hit their driver 250yds and their 7 iron 150yds ... but is that really the case? Ask yourself a question if you had to carry a ball over a pond for the full 150yd or 250yd carry would you be able to do it? Unfortunately, the answer for many would be no, but it’s this inaccuracy that stops many golfers becoming better players. Being honest with yourself will obviously give you a better chance of choosing the correct club for the job which should in turn lead to better scores. A good example of this would be golfers who still live and die by their 3 & 4 irons, don’t get me wrong there are some players that are excellent long iron players but to carry either of these clubs to simply hit the ball back on the fairway from under trees is, in my

opinion, a complete waste of a club. This becomes especially true when for many golfers the most important and most used clubs in their bag are their fairway woods and hybrids so to lose a club in such important area of the bag just makes no sense. As we know technology now plays a huge roll in golf and a huge growth area has been GPS and laser yardage devices. These devices have an extremely high level of accuracy but can generally be let down if the player is not honest with themselves as to how far they hit the ball. It’s all very well knowing how far the pin is but if you don’t know what club hits it that far it’s a bit of a waste of time. Also, I see many golfers who use yardage devices take on a shot with a club that requires an absolute perfect strike, with a lot of the trouble generally at the front of greens it may be worth going for a club that would get you to the back of the green, taking the pressure away from a perfect strike. So, in summary, be honest with yourself, know how far you actually hit the ball (rather than what you think you should) and try never to rely on a perfect strike to get you over trouble, by taking some of the pressure off you will play better golf.

MASTER THE MAINTENANCE AND GAIN MOMENTUM! to say it, I love this time of year! Clocks Itohave have gone forward, the golf courses are starting dry out, looking more picturesque with

budding vegetation and we know that golf in ‘shorts and polo-shirts’ is not far away at all. Life should be good, yes? Well yes, it should but maybe you will tell me different? At many local courses, I hear the muttering and moaning of Members and Golfers, complaining about this, that and the other! And right now, at the beginning of April, with many courses undergoing green renovation work, I can sort of understand it. However, moaning about the course, weather conditions, and in fact, anything else is not a ‘useful state’ for your mind to be in, when you are playing golf. Just when the fairweather golfer has had a sniff of the sun, and ventures out, we are faced with greens that have been tined, filled, drilled and every other treatment you can think of.Yes, it does cause your ball on the putting surface to jump about, perhaps go off line (but consider the fact it could also put your putt back online as well). So here’s a tip from The Mind Zone to combat this. Just accept it! Go out and play golf, enjoy yourself, but accept it. It is what it is! Why go out and beat yourself up over something that is out of your control? I even hear people predicting what their ball will do, and frequent cries of ‘you can’t putt on these greens’, etc. Well, it’s the same for everyone and my advice is to just accept it. Course maintenance is vital, and in a few weeks, you’ll hardly notice the work that was carried out, but you’ll be so grateful that they did. As Dolly Parton once said, ‘If you want the rainbow, you’ve gotta put up with the rain!’ Be careful of the story you tell yourself.

Your mind is a wonderful, incredible tool, but as with anything, in the wrong hands can be destructive. Your mind will also do what it ‘thinks’ is best for you, it’s there to protect you and make you feel good, but the only ‘thinking’ it can do is what you have programmed it to do! When a golfer has that 18” putt, how many times have heard them say ‘I’ll try and finish’? What message does this send to your mind? Try normally means fail. Just step up to the putt and say ‘I’ll finish that’… and knock it in. I see people standing on the first tee, saying, ‘I’m not

playing well at the moment, I know I’m going to have a bad round’... and they come off at the end and say ‘I had a shocker, but I knew I would!’ They have programmed their mind to have a bad round (This doesn’t always mean if you say you are going to have a great round, that it will be the case, but put yourself in the best possible position to have a great round)..Incidentally, if these golfers can predict the future like that, I’d suggest a lottery ticket, post haste! Be very careful of what you tell yourself. This is a subject that I’m going to be covering more and more in Mind Zone sessions. If you want more details, simply drop me a line.

You’ll have experienced days when everything goes well, you keep out of the penalty areas, all those putts go in, and you’ll have experienced the exact opposite. But how many times have you suddenly nailed a long putt, or spilt the fairway with your drive and the rest of the game improves? Momentum is a huge facet of golf, at whatever level you play, so wouldn’t it be good to harness that momentum and use it to your advantage. Again, I’ve talked about switching on momentum in previous articles, and it may be an area that we discuss in a future edition of Essex Golfer. If anyone has their own story of building momentum, please share it, as I will mine. Finally, we cannot have an April edition of Essex Golfer without talking about The Masters. Patrick Reed will be defending, and will surely be looking to capture another Green Jacket. Many of the pro golfers have spent the past few months honing their game, playing on tour, with varying degrees of success. I, as much as anyone, have no idea who will win in 2019. I have ‘favourite’ players that I’d ‘like’ to win, but the winner will be unveiled come Sunday evening. One thing is for sure. The golfer that chips and putts the most consistently, over four days, will give himself the best possible chance. Enjoy the Spring, have a great Easter period with plenty of golf and remember ... talk to yourself nicely! www.themind-zone.com

Swing the handle

L

ast issue I talked about all swings with all clubs are the same, because as we address the ball the handle of the golf clubs are always in the same place. This issue I would like to continue with my thoughts on the handle, and my main message is that we swing the handle of the golf club. Not the club head or the shaft but the handle. This is the point we are joined to the club where our grip is formed and where we feel the club during the swing. Try this very simple exercise, In Picture 1 I have substituted the golf club with a range basket, I have set up to the ball in my normal posture and distance from the ball.

In Picture 2 I have allowed myself to swing the basket back away from the target and in Picture 3 down and through towards the target. The feel I have is that of trying to throw the basket at the target. It is amazing that when I film pupils doing this drill no matter how complicated their own swing may be, they always without prompting manage to make a great swing with the basket. All that needs now to happen is substitute the basket for a club and recreate the same feelings concentrating your efforts on where the handle is swinging not the club head. Great golfing

CONVERTING YOUR PRACTICE

TO PERFORMANCE I

hope you enjoyed my March edition in the Essex Golfer, this is a follow on to provide you with one simple practice drills which you can carry out. As mentioned for me the emphasis is upon the “One ball rule” and making it count. The over riding thought process at this stage should be the playability rather than the technique which will have been carried out earlier in the practice session. One of my playing situations which I use for the Pitch shot is a progressive distance drill where the player will set a target prior to completing the task.

3. Each subsequent ball must land pass the previous balls finishing point 4. The direction here is not the key but the landing point and distance control element 5. The more accomplished you become the greater the number of balls in a ladder sequence I hope you enjoy this drill and please let me know how you get on via my Facebook page or Twitter. Let’s turn your Practice into Performance.

THE BIG CLUB CHALLENGE AT FORRESTER PARK

very year at Forrester Park there is the E battle of all battles; the big showdown between Team Tritton (the blue team captained

by the head chef Paul Tritton) and Team Lockwood (the white Team captained by the golf professional Craig Lockwood). This year’s competition was another for the history books, taking place on Saturday 23rd March 2019.

Saturday morning it was incredible to see everyone sporting their team colours and ready to go to war. The format was a Stableford competition where every point counts, plus there was plenty of extra opportunities to get bonus points with nearest the pin and longest drive competitions as well as the special double points ‘power play’ hole. Despite this, the result couldn’t

The Big Club Challenge competition was set up 7 years ago to bring the club together, create a truly welcoming environment and allow people to meet and play with new people. Whilst the main focus of the day is about enjoying yourselves, there is no shortage of competition. The turn out is always incredible and this year was no different; over 120 members and guests gathered to take part and to see whether the Blue Team would consolidate their 4-3 lead or if the White Team could finally bring it level. The day was an amazing success, starting early

have been tighter. .. with the scores finishing 1778 - 1793 there was only 15 points in it. The victors? The White Team! With some impressive golfing displays, a good helping of on course ‘refreshments’ and constant smiles and laughter the day couldn’t have gone better. Congratulations go to the White Team for taking home the victory and bringing the scores to 4-4, but thank you to everyone who took part and made the day such a success. Now, the only question that remains is... who will win in 2020?! - 32 -

WOMEN’S GOLF DAY LAUNCHES ON INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

W

omen’s Golf Day will return for its fourth year on June 4th 2019 in what promises to be the largest single day celebration of women’s golf that the world has ever seen. And having entered into a brand new partnership with the ANNIKA Foundation, the charitable foundation of women’s golf legend Annika Sorenstam, WGD will reach further than ever before in helping to support young women around the world with the power of golf, for years to come. Women’s Golf Day is a one-day four-hour global experience for women and girls. It is a celebration of women and girls learning golf skills that last a lifetime and being part of a larger global community. Over the past three years, WGD events have been held at over 900 venues in 52 countries and have delivered a golf experience to over 50,000 women and girls. Plans for WGD 2019 are well under way and the initial response from both host venues and potential participants has been unprecedented. From what started out as a labour of love for WGD founder Elisa Gaudet in 2016, the numbers of women that have been reached WGD is remarkable in itself, but with new partnerships and the potential for continued impact on women and girls all over the world, WGD 2019 is ready to raise the bar even further.

Gaudet commented: “Annika continues to be a global icon and a champion for women around the world to get into to golf and succeed. She has been a great supporter of WGD since we started out on our mission to engage, empower and support women through golf in 2016. We are thrilled to be to be able to support Annika in her goals for the ANNIKA Foundation and encourage our locations to around the globe to support women achieving and advancing through golf.” Sorenstam echoed the words of Gaudet as she offered her support for the 2019 WGD events worldwide. “After I stepped away from competitive golf, I knew I wanted to share my passion for the game,” she said. “Working with initiatives like Women’s Golf Day, which share many of the same goals I have for my ANNIKA Foundation, is inspiring. While there’s still much work to be done, we’re making great strides toward bringing our great game to even more women around the globe.” Any venue wishing to register to host an event for Women’s Golf Day 2019 should visit www.womensgolfday.comand go to ‘Register a Location, and you don’t need to be a golf course to take part. For anyone interested in taking part at a WGD event, visit @womensgolfday and #WomensGolfDay and check into www.womensgolfday.com for news of new venues signing up around the world every day.

delighted to accompany my friends from Iprizewas Essex Golfer who were the winners of the star draw last year during Wendys Thymic

Fundraiser. The squares were sold with the winners drawn during the evening entertainment. I can’t thank Castle Air enough for their amazing generosity which is an opportunity we can only dream of. The flight is a “bucket list” gracing and hovering over the most famous landmarks which in itself requires the upmost skills. The day had perfect visibility of over 40 miles with only a few gentle bumps along the way. Wendy would have loved to have joined her friends but can rest in the knowledge those memories will last forever. Thank you Castle Air Sarah

LES WINS ON COUNTBACK n a wonderful barmy spring morning, over O 61 Five Lakes members enjoyed a great day on the Lakes course. Four players returned nett 67’s only separated by the smallest of countback margins. 15 handicapper Les Cheyne returned 7 pars and 1 birdie to win the Chamois Trophy a nett 32 on his back 9 holes, second place went to Clive Taylor (12), with a nett 34 on his back 9 holes, and 3rd place was taken by Doug Butcher (17) on the same score. The final player on a nett 67 was Neil Whitelaw (10) leaving him in 4th place. Two other payers returned nett 69's with junior Joe Ramsey (18) and Derek Monaghan (16). The scratch prize was won by Jack Garnett (+1) with a gross 71. Birdie twos were won on the par 3’s by Derek Monaghan on holes 4 & 11, Neil Whitelaw on hoes 4 & 8, Malcolm Pook, Clive Taylor, Frank Taylor and Mark Harlow on 8.

JOSEPH AND ARIAN MAKE THEIR MARK

J

oseph Jackson and Arian Masud put down an early marker which no one was able to beat in Colchester Golf Club's Foursomes Cup. Going out in one of the first groups of the day the two six handicap juniors returned a score of 69 nett giving them a comfortable two shot cushion over the next pair of Mark Brown and Jamie Harris who took second place. Unlike the year’s previous competitions the day provided better golfing weather with only a

Mark Brown and Jamie Harris, second in the Foursomes Cup.

stiff breeze and the occasional hail shower to contend with. From the back tees however the course was still playing long. The Jackson/Masud winning partnership certainly paid off. They had two birdies in the front nine setting them up well and were level par after eleven holes. Five bogeys in the next seven holes did nothing to take away the shine they had already put on their round to give them their victory. Second placed Brown (8) and Harris (12)could have been much closer had not a bogey followed by a double marred their final two holes. Matthew Michael and Paul Smith, both playing off nine, claimed third spot with a 72 nett. Behind them in fourth with 74 nett were twelve handicappers Michael Mayes and Duncan Stewart. Colchester’s juniors held a St Patrick’s Day Stableford where twelve handicapper Oliver Baker firmly put his stamp on the proceedings with a top of the morning score of 38 points. Charlie Allison (13) was next in 34 points and Charlie Zhou (19) getting the nod for third after a countback from Arian Masud (6).

GOG MAGOG PRO-AM

T

he Essex PGA played the Wandlebury course on their visit to Gog Magog this year and James Webber from the Rayleigh Club won both the individual Professional event and the team event. A stunning score of 7 under 65 took the title by 4 shots from Ben Wyatt, also from the Rayleigh Club and Essex PGA Captain Craig Laurence from Stock Brook Country Club who both shot 69. Seven birdies and no dropped shots indicated that Webber is running into early season form prior to his 2019 Europro season.

The 7 under par score obviously contributed strongly to the team’s stableford score of 92 points, equivalent to 20 under par although this was only 1 point ahead of the runners up which was the team from Rochford Hundred Golf Club led by Professional Michael Vandenberg. In third place was the team from Stock Brook Country Club with Professional Craig Laurence leading the way. Prizes were presented by the 2019 Essex PGA Captain, Craig Laurence.

REPORT FROM 4TH ROYAL EVENT

REPORT FROM SAFFRON WALDEN PRO-AM

he 4th visit of the Essex PGA to the Kent T courses, Royal Cinque Ports and Royal St. Georges produced a scintillating performance

from Robert Coles of Maylands Golf Club. Leading after the 1st round at Royal Cinque Ports with a 69 by just 1 shot from James Scade, the contest looked wide open with Jason Levermore from Little Channels 3 shots back on 72. However a brilliant 66 on day 2 at Royal St. Georges meant that the title went to Coles by no less than 5 shots from both Scade and Levermore who tied for second place.

S

affron Walden Golf Club is celebrating its centenary in 2019 and the PGA in Essex was delighted to make a visit to this beautiful golf course for the 2019 Essex PGA Pro-Am. Only two Professionals broke the tough par of 72, the winner by one stroke being Robert Coles from Maylands Golf and Country Club on 2 under par beating home Professional Sarah Smith who returned a very creditable 71. In third place was Ben Wyatt from the Rayleigh Club with a one over par 73. Sarah Smith made up for missing out on the individual title by leading her team of Saffron Walden ladies to the team prize with an impressive 84 points to win by one point from the teams with Professionals Chris Cutchie and Ben Wyatt. Prizes were presented by the Essex PGA Captain, Craig Laurence.

Winning team with Professional Steve Hambling and Essex PGA captain Craig Laurence.

In the team event, only 1 point separated the top 5 teams with all the places being decided on count back. Coming out on top were the team from Braintree Golf Club with Professional Steve Hambling just pipping the team with Robert Coles.

A stunning 4 under par 66 by Jack Winer from Abridge Golf and Country Club was enough to take the Pro event by 2 shots from in-form Robert Coles from Maylands Golf and Country Club. No less than 7 birdies contributed to a great winning score from Winer in only his second outing of the year. In joint third spot were Lloyd Kennedy from Chelmsford Golf Club and Mark Stokes from Bishops Stortford Golf Club on one under 69. The team event was closely fought and there were countbacks for most of the placings. HOW TO ATTAIN MORE SUCCESS FROM YOUR PRACTICE STAGES OF PRACTICE

T

his months edition is really to give you, the players some help with the sort of questions you should be asking yourself regarding your practice sessions. As you can see from the 2 examples of overall swing building and coaching methodologies below, one from the late 90s with probably the most successful coach at the time David Leadbetter, and now in the present with Dave Alred there are definite similarities. The main difference now is that the pressure (match) practice from Dave Alred, is a lot more refined than David Leadbetter’s Maintenance practice, but the 3 stage ethos is still in play 20 years on. BUILDING/DEVELOPMENT ……. REFINING ……. MAINTENANCE … 1997 DAVID LEADBETTER REPAIR ……………………………. TRAINING …… MATCH ………….. 2018 DAVE ALRED

WHAT SORT OF PRACTICE ARE YOU DOING? DO YOU THINK ITS WORKING?

BLOCK PRACTICE? RANDOM PRACTICE? COMPETITIVE PRACTICE?

ARE DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF YOUR GAME IN DIFFERENT AREAS? WHAT ARE THE TIME ALLOWANCES FOR PRACTICING EACH ASPECT? ASK YOUR COACH WHAT PHASE YOU ARE IN!

HOW DO YOU KEEP ON INCREASING THE DIFFICULTY OF THE MATCH/MAINTENANCE PHASE? DO YOU TAKE AND REVEIW STATISTICS/NOTES OF PREVIOUS PRACTICE SESSIONS?

If you ask yourself the questions here, hopefully you will see a light shine on some of the possible reasons that you are not getting the results you desire from your practice sessions, and this will give you some new momentum to try different things. If you would like any advice on ways to increase your success by the way you are practicing please feel free to call or email. GREENKEEPERS BLOG FROM ESSEX BIGGA

A

pril for many is the start of the golf season, honours board competitions begin at many clubs and the first rounds of inter club knockout competitions start plus club membership subscriptions become due. In preparation for all this greenkeepers across the county have been completing maintenance programs on greens, tees and fairways preparing for the peak playing season. In truth this winter has been kind and most course managers have been able to manage winter wear and traffic reasonably well plus also complete some fantastic projects to improve golf courses across the county. This winter has been reasonably dry, I have only recorded 107mm of rainfall for the first 3 months of the year at Orsett Golf Club, in 2018 it was 180mm. We are also a month head in terms of nature when we look at a value for Growth Degree Days. Now we are playing the waiting game, hopefully in the coming weeks we will see germination particularly as lots of greenkeeping teams will have spent many man hours pumping new grass seed in to worn or bare areas that failed to recover from the summer drought of last year. What every greenkeeping team hopes for in the coming season is that mother nature and budgets allow them to prepare the course to give the best possible experience to golfers as every year expectations creep higher but for that to happen a general improvement needs to take place in course etiquette shown by golfers. Smooth and good paced greens aren’t possible when pitchmarks on greens are not repaired or poorly repaired. Every golfer knows its their responsibility to repair their pitchmark yet every day I either cut greens or change holes I will at least find half a dozen unrepaired pitchmarks on

every green, I could probably find more but in general greenkeepers don’t have time to as other jobs need completing. This year we ask all golfers “think did I leave a pitchmark when my ball landed on the green” and don’t be shy in reminding a playing partner of their responsibility if they forget to repair their pitchmark. All golfers are disappointed when they land in a bunker but after you have played your escape shot (hopefully a successful one) think about the golfers behind you. It is extremely discourteous to leave a bunker with either footprints, poorly raked or the rake itself in a position which penalises the following players. Before entering a bunker locate the rake and take it with you when you go to play your shot. Good etiquette would see the rake left at the front edge of the bunker with the handle resting on the lip as shown. This means the rake is easy to locate and pick up, the handle is not covered in sand plus the chances of the ball being trapped between the rake and the bunker lip are slim. Once the golfer has played a successful shot use the flat side of the rake to smooth over any indentation created from the golf club and settling of stance created by the players feet. After that light movements of the rake backwards and forwards (as if painting a wall) are all that are required over footprints as golfer exits the bunker leaving the rake as shown for the next unlucky visitor to the hazard. Just these two simple things performed by golfers when playing will lead to a more pleasurable experience to those playing behind you or the following day.

Two members of the Under 16’s Teddy Papple and Lewis Wright were offered caps in the Under 18’s, both showed their worth by winning their respective matches against strong opposition. Lewis Wright had the best win of the day winning 6 & 4 and Josh Gray won 5 & 4 with William Dove winning his match on the 18 with a birdie whilst ESSEX U18 V THE WARREN Teddy Papple won by 2 & 1. TRAIN YOUR BRAIN TO PUTT & PLAY BETTER! Y

ou are probably thinking what is this all about. Well within the past 2 years I have been aware of understanding that every person has some kind of Neuro-Development issue, and without training this will only get worse over time. This is definitely more apparent in people getting older in age and them accepting that they are getting older. I have many people come and see me and the important message is getting the person to understand themselves better. What I now know is that it goes even deeper and after being tested, there are things that I need to develop to not just help my golf but more importantly my life. The other thing I have learnt is, the brain is ageless. This has been fascinating and the fact we can reverse certain things happening to us if we want too. There are many factors that go into that, but the thing I want to get you focused on is Neuro-Development. I’m going to share a test with you called the ‘Romberg Test’. This is a test amongst others for Gross Muscle Co-Ordination and Balance. They are essential in you playing better golf, especially putting. Instructions for the ‘Romberg Test’ Stand with your feet together and arms by your side, looking forward at a point and eyes open, as shown in the picture on the right. Do this for 1015 seconds. Did you notice any sway, movement and struggling or losing balance? Move off the spot, move around and go back to the same point and do the test again, but now with your eyes closed. You may experience more sway, movement and loss of balance or exactly the same. The more severe the movement and/or loss of

balance, the more likely you are to not be able to perform at your best week in week out. In fact, more likely to be fewer good performances and more to be not so good or even poor. I now do 14 Neuro-Development tests for golf to determine many factors. The great thing is there are exercises that can be given to improve CoOrdination and Balance and if you would like a screening, please let me know on either my mobile or email. We all think that Golf is about improving our varying Swings or Putting strokes and yes I would say there is a lot of truth in that, but if we Train our Brain then our muscles can work better, hence the saying ‘Muscle Memory’ and our performances can only get even more improved. If our Brain works better, then we function better and who would like that? I’m positive we all want that.

GOLF ETIQUETTE Some people may be asking, “Why would I need a book about correct conduct? I know how to behave myself.” Although integrity and fairness are an excellent basis, good manners alone are not enough in golf. A certain amount of specific knowledge is essential, especially in the light of the dangers involved in sport. Furthermore, golf also involves social conventions that are not based directly on accepted behaviour patterns. The etiquette is just as important as the rules of play and it ensures that all players can enjoy their game as much as possible. This book does not claim to cover every single issue but it does contain everything you need to know in order to be welcomed at virtually every course in the world. However, please bear in mind that the etiquette may very slightly from club to club. Therefore find out about the Local Rules in advance, follow all the instructions and heed the information on the notice boards. You will then be a welcome guest and playing partner on any course – irrespective of your ability level.

The watch is fitted with a white strap with green stitching, although a black strap is also included in the package, along with three complementary Tag Heuer logoed golf balls. www.tagheuer.com

Under Armour Launches HOVR Drive

pmarket Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer has entered U into the golf GPS market with the launch of the Connected Modular 45 Golf Edition. Under Armour’s new HOVR Drive golf shoes are designed to provide comfort from the opening tee shot to the final putt without sacrificing the responsive energy return naturally generated by the golf swing.

Tag Heuer Launches GPS Golf Watch and App pmarket Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer has entered U into the golf GPS market with the launch of the Connected Modular 45 Golf Edition.

Although it has been manufacturing smart watches since 2015, this is the first time that the luxury brand has moved into the golf market. The Golf Edition watch combines a golf-inspired design and shock-resistant materials with an advanced Golf app which provides 3D renderings of more than 39,000 golf courses and provides comprehensive performance analysis. The full-colour touchscreen is covered with a scratchresistant sapphire crystal, and the watch itself is equipped with multiple sensors, such as GPS, an accelerometer, a gyroscope and a microphone. It can also send messages, receive notifications, play music and download other apps, as well as be used for contactless payments through Google Pay. It has a battery life of 25 hours in GPS mode. The Golf app is available to download for free and can be used on the Golf Edition, as well as other TAG Heuer smart watches. It’ll record shot distances with an accuracy to within one metre, record scores for up to four players and display distances to green and hazards. It also offers 2D course mapping on the watch and precise 3D mapping. From the phone app, it uses vector technology to

Traditionally, golf footwear has used cushioning to mitigate against ground reaction, providing comfort, but losing the power of weight-loading when in the backswing. However, the HOVR Drive boasts heel-totoe cushioning, which provides a soft underfoot, yet delivers explosive energy return. Mike Forsey, UA’s Director of Global Golf Footwear, says: “With most other cushioning platforms, you have to choose softness or responsiveness. Not so with the HOVR Drive. UA HOVR cushioning technology ensures total underfoot comfort and superior energy return.” Traction is delivered through RST 2.0 rotational resistance spikes, which grip the ground as the foot pivots through the swing, while green-friendly Softspike Silver Tornado spikes provide horizontal traction to walk the course in comfort. The breathable, lightweight uppers are protected with UA’s waterproof Storm Technology to keep your feet dry at all times. Available in white/red/academy or black/metallic silver, the UA HOVR Drive comes with a two-year warranty. It goes on sale from March 1 from selected retailers and pro shops, and also online at UA.com.

DICKIE DRIVES IN THE NEW YEAR AT NOTLEYS Richard “Dickie” Pryke.

he 2019 season got off to a very great start at The Notleys Golf Club, as new Club Captain, Richard “Dickie” Pryke, “drove in” at the end of March to a record crowd of members. Dickie can be seen here delivering his 242 yard drive down the fairway of the first hole, being watched by Competition Secretary Peter Watts, and, in light blue, the incoming Seniors Captain Andy Smith. As Richard and Andy drove in, so our outgoing Captains “putted out” their year on the 18th hole, with a tricky 40 foot up-hill putt to negotiate in their final official event of the season. Both can be seen here after their very close final putts: Outgoing Seniors Captain Malcolm Shead and Rick Vince, 2018 Club Captain, after their great years - Rick having captained his Jubilee Cup team to Notley’s best ever position in 2018, and Malcolm receiving a special award from the members for his continual support at our club from Club and Seniors Captaincy’s, Secretary and Chairman of Notleys GC. Notleys members competed both individually

T

for a variety of sweepstakes, nearest the pin and longest drive competitions, and a fantastic team Texas Scramble as the traditional way to start our golfing year. In memory for one of our members’ relatives, our classy Spitfire trophy was ultimately won by the drawn three-ball of Matt Morley, Dan Bonner, and Jim Walker who received their prize from Dickie And it would not be Notleys without the fantastic support from front of house manager Deborah Hulme - from the delicious bacon rolls during registration in the morning, through to the excited screams (entertaining to all members) as she collects her staff raffle winnings after the Presentations were over. Debs is seen here with Bob Rollins, 2019 Vice Captain. Dickie would like to thank all staff and members who supported the day, and got the Captain’s charities off to a great start with funds donated of over £1140. As Club Captain, it is great to see so much fun being had out on the course at the Notleys GC, the friendly course with a great future

Seniors Captain Malcolm Shead on the left, and Rick Vince, 2018 Club Captain.

The Mixed 4 Ball Betterball Yellow Peril Stableford event was contested by 16 teams with a shotgun start. The best 2 scores plus the double points yellow ball which was played in rotation counted on each hole, so a Stableford Score of

Mens March Mid-Week Medal (Stableford) - 06/03/2019 Also played in favourable conditions with some good scores posted. The best of those was 41 points by 20 handicapper Jim Inches, beating Ray Humphreys (22) by 2 points who finished ahead of Bob Braine on countback who also scored 39 points. Mens March Monthly Stableford – 16/03/2019 In a complete contrast to the weather in the first two weeks of the month, the March Stableford was played in very tough conditions with wind gusts approaching 50mph. The course had taken on a considerable amount of rain over the previous few days, and as a result winter tee mats were in use. The elements did not stop David Mills however, who carded 42 points playing off 16 to finish 5 points clear in first place. Anthony Lovell (18) finished at the head of the chasing pack with 37 points, beating third placed Dave Williams (22) on countback also with 37 points.

144 points constituted net level par. The winning score was 154 points by Andy Parker (12), Tracey Rogers (12), Carol Annetts (19) and Stuart Gould (26) (see picture). In second place with 149 points was Darren Booty (12), Teri Olley (15), Steve Guichard (17) and Anne Howes (24). Third place was taken by Nick Edkins (13), Shelley Edkins (13), Mike Bysouth (22) and Elizabeth Higgins (24). Mens March Monthly Medal (Stableford) - 02/03/2019 Played in beautiful weather which contributed to some excellent scoring, with 10 golfers scoring below their handicaps. Jeremy Aurora shot 1 over par gross to take first place with 44 points playing off 9. His round included 8 pars, 3 Birdies and an Eagle on the Par 4 16th. In second place with 42 points was Tom Clayton (12) with 10 pars and 3 birdies. Third Place was taken by Colin Phillips (10) who’s 8 Pars and 2 birdies helped make up his score of 39 points.

Ladies March Tuesday Stableford – 12/03/2019 The first ladies competition of the month was won by Cherry Clarke, who’s 4 pars contributed to her winning score of 29 points playing off 19. Wendy Scales (15) made 2 pars and a birdie to score 24 points which was good enough for second place on count back ahead of 13 handicapper Shelley Edkins who’s 3 pars and a birdie also gave her 24 points. Ladies March Saturday Stableford – 16/03/2019 The ladies also had to contend with the strong winds for their Stableford competition. In first place was Rachel Higgins, 6 pars and 2 birdies helped contributing to a round of 30 points, playing off her 6 handicap. In second place was consistent Carol Annetts (19) with 27 points including 3 pars, finishing ahead of Elizabeth Higgins (24) who made 2 pars along the way to her 25 points total.

INNOVATOR SARAH THREE RIVERS TO STAGE EAST’S FIRST WOMEN-ONLY PRO-AM

P

GA Fellow professional Sarah Bennett has been the architect of many golfing initiatives – now she is planning the East region’s inaugural women-only pro-am. Three Rivers Golf and Country Club – where Sarah is the head teaching professional – will be the venue for an intended 18-team event on Tuesday, June 25. Sarah’s own brand Golfing Girl, which she set up 10 years ago, is a key sponsor. But she is also aiming to attract interest from her contacts within the industry, who would like to help drive women’s golf. Ladies clothing business Swing Out Sister have already committed to providing garments for the prize Sarah Bennett. table. PuttOUT will be adding to the prize fund and hosting competitions during the day based around their training aids. Bennett said: “It’s my understanding that this will be the first attempt at an all-female PGA proam event in the East region. “I’d like to encourage teams to come from outside of the region with their club professional. There will be a decent prize fund on offer for the individual and team events for the professionals and a strong prize table for the amateurs as well as fun ancillary events. “It is a great playing opportunity for WPGA members and also offers the chance for them to bring valued clients and club members who may not have been to a pro-am format before. “Depending on scheduling, I would also like to think we’d maybe get support from one or two Tour players.” Sarah serves on both the East and the WPGA committees and is very much in tune with the golfing landscape – hence her thinking that it was

high time for a women-only pro-am in the region. The design of the whole day will seek to promote women’s golf and there will be a postround prosecco afternoon tea for players rather than a traditional carvery. She added: “A women’s-only pro-am has been on my mind for about six months and I’m really pleased that we’ve managed to start planning. We just need to spread the word. “I know that from when I’ve taken ladies to some pro-ams that there can be a little bit of an intimidation factor. It can be a nerve-wracking environment for ladies playing in a pro-am but my goal is to produce a day that makes everyone at ease, so that it will be an enjoyable day on June 25. “The aim is to present a memorable day which can be repeated on an annual basis – trust me it will definitely be different!”

EUROPEAN SUCCESS FOR HOLLY

H

olly Haslam of Stock Brook Manor recently won the European Junior Open which was held at Alcaidesa Links Golf Resort, Spain. Holly’s three round total of 221 put her 7 shots ahead of the rest of the field in the Event which is now in its 27th year and covered on Sky Sports. The event has previously been contested by the likes of Justin Rose and Luke Donald which gives you some idea of the magnitude of Hollys success. Very well done Holly.

BT COMIC RELIEF BRINGS SMILES TO NEWTON GREEN GOLF CLUB

A

s part of the Comic Relief activities this year from within BT, Phil Redhead, from the Notleys Golf Club and Chairman of the Jubilee Cup, organised and hosted a wide range of East of England golfing folk at Newton Green Golf Club for a round of golf all for a great cause. This was for the Sixth consecutive year running, in a new tradition stemming back from the inaugural game held number of years ago for Sports Relief and Comic Relief causes. Nearly thirty golfers from a variety of backgrounds in and outside of BT came together to raise £500 for Comic Relief – contributing to the £63.9 million of charitable donations in 2019 on Red Nose Day night, and over £1 billion raised so far for Comic Relief causes. Phil wishes to thank a number of groups who participated in the success of the event – not just BT staff from Enterprise, Technology and Openreach, but the members of The Notleys Golf Club, the Seniors Touring Amateur Golf Society (STAGS), plus the BT Research Golf Society which also supports ex-BT members, and last but my no means least our friends from Brookman Park Golf Club in Hertfordshire – all of which contributed to the days success! Phil would also like to thank Ben Tawell at NWGC who provided the impetus to have the

event hosted at this delightful Suffolk club, and whose team provided some great fayre both before and after the game. Phil is shown here in his Comic Relief red nose, also wearing the obligatory Plus Four trousers for comic effect (obviously!), and the team who spent a great day out in Suffolk, whilst raising money for an excellent charitable cause. He is please to say the event was eventually won by himself, on count-back with 40 Stableford points, with second place sgoing to the STAGS Gary O’Neale. The STAGS also left the day with the much coveted Wooden Spoon (score with-held to remove embarrassment), going to Mick Button. The team honours was also hotly contested, with three teams all on 91 points (best 2 stableford points for each hole), but countback sealed the win for a Notleys Golf Club team consisting of ex-Captain Darran “Daz” Liversidge, Nigel Brown and family support from Levi and Gary Nash. Well done to me, and also a massive amount of thanks to Ben and the team from Newton Green who presented an excellent pre and post golf meal, as well as a lovely course and venue to play at which enabled us to maximise both our playing enjoyment and our charity donations.
