ell Mr Spieth delivers again with only a late burst from Rory. I’m sure we’ve all been through the 3 putter nightmare Dustin suffered! Now it’s time for the big one on a ‘proper link course’! St Andrews will again be a great test and a fantastic spectacle. For the retail industry this is the big one as it is live on terrestrial TV (not for much longer) it appeals to many new golfers and inspires some of those that have put golf on the ‘back burner’ for a while! This does not mean to say it does not inspire the regular golfer as well! As with last month which proved very successful we are doing a 4 day special over the period. Ladies should be particularly please as we are doing a terrific deal on clothing. As well as this we have a wedge, waterproof, shoe and electric trolley deal. Please come and see us as we give a service that is second to none.

Lee Porter, the PGA Professional attached to Hylands Golf Complex in Chelmsford, has been voted Clubmaker of the Year by the Golf Clubmakers Association in the UK. Why there is more to loft than what it says on the club head. B

elieve it or not in golf we actually have three lofts on the golf club. These are: Static Loft This is the loft that the golf club has as it sits in your golf bag, although it's not always what it says on the club head. Spin Loft This starts out very close to the Static Loft but changes due to how the golfer presents the club to the ball – technique and the golf shaft are the main factors here. Dynamic Loft This is a combination of Spin Loft and the golfers angle of attack – the direction the club head is travelling in as it strikes the ball in relation to the ground. There are three basic angles of attack, positive is hitting up on the ball, negative is a downward strike and neutral is exactly that – a level strike. Below you will find two iPad screenshots from a recent test I done to explain Dynamic Loft. For both screenshots I used a 10.5 degree driver. In the first screenshot you can see that I managed to achieve an upward angle of attack of 5.2 degrees. In turn this gives me a Dynamic Loft of 16.4 degrees and a launch angle of 14.9 degrees (not bad!).

-8-

However, the big problem here is the shots back spin (this can be found in the Spin column along the bottom) which is way to high. This results in high launching shot which will climb high in the air and pretty much 'stall' - it simply hangs in the air. Also, this shot would not have hardly any roll. In our second screenshot I had a downward attack angle (-4.2 degrees) which in turn changes the Dynamic Loft to 9.1 degrees. This means the ball launches at only 7.5 degrees which is way too low for my club head speed. This does lower the spin but in all honesty at this launch angle the more spin the better as the ball simply won't stay in the air. So, not only does the club's Dynamic Loft change the shots launch angle but it also changes the spin. In previous articles I have spoken about the importance of matching your launch angle to your swing speed, this is the only way to make sure you are achieving your maximum distance. Hopefully you can now see why simply choosing a loft without having your angle of attack measured is a bit of a lottery.Whatever the driver has written on it is almost irrelevant, it what you turn it into at impact that matters.

Putting Control of the

FACE

T

he greatest influence on the golf ball is when we put the putter face up to the ball, any slight deviation will result in the ball being misdirected. This month I am going to show you a really simple practice drill that will enable you to monitor your putter face when practicing. This will result in more consistent putting. Firstly you will need 6 tee pegs and find a place on your putting green that has a straight putt preferably slightly uphill and approximately 6 feet long. Step 1 (picture 1) place two of the tee pegs just on the outside of the putter head, leaving approximately a quarter of half inch either side. Step 2 (picture 2) repeat the process six inches behind the first two.

1

Step 3 (picture 3) place the final two tee pegs twelve inches in front of the four you have already placed, a quarter of an inch either side of a ball and on route to the hole. Now you can practice, as you can see in picture 4, placing the ball in the middle of the four pegs. As I hit the putts, I get great feedback on my stroke, and it will be very apparent whether you are able to keep the blade square as the ball will hit the two forward pegs if not. At first, you might find this difficult but with practice you will soon improve. If you would like to join me on one of my tuition breaks next spring details are on the garypikegolf.com web site. Happy golfing

Notleys Golf Club Hundred Holes of Golf Challenge for Farleigh Hospice

O

n Friday 26th June an intrepid trio of Notleys Golf Club members answered their Captain’s call to help raise cash for his charities by playing 100 holes of golf in a day! Club Captain Adam Painter, seeking to raise at least £1000 for one of his charities this year, Farleigh Hospice www.farleighhospice.org, laid down the challenge, which was gladly accepted by a team of former Club Captains from The Notleys who successfully completed 5 rounds and 10 holes of golf from dawn unto dusk to support the wonderful local Essex charity that exists to meet the needs of local people affected by life limiting illnesses and to support those who have been bereaved.

pretty well throughout the day, and even managed a par and birdie respectively on the Par 5 100th hole at Notleys. Fundraising is still ongoing via JustGiving and if you think this incredible achievement (and subsequent pain!!) warrants some cash to an exceptional cause then please donate at the link below as we would love to blow Adam’s target out of the water! www.justgiving.com/Notleys100holes2015 Phil, Dave & Kev would like to thank The Notleys Golf Club for supporting their efforts on the day (especially with a very cooling down “shower” from the automatic sprinklers on the greens in the evening), and also special thanks to all those Notleys members who supported and shared the day by caddying or walking with us and keeping our spirits and motivations high – brilliant support from the Club Captain Adam Painter,Vice-Captain Daz Liversidge, Steve “Ramos” White, John Allen (with Buster), Mark “Tich” Adams, Andrew Goldsmith, Gav Wayne & Jo Russell (with Molly), plus Mo & George Cook spurring us on all the way – and who could forget the sausage butty help from Deb Hulme in the kitchens. Do not think we will be doing this challenge again, and glad we could go over and above the brilliant challengers of the Macmillan Longest Day From left to right at 0432 hrs on the first tee of 100 holes: Jubilee Cup – another wonderful cause! Chairman Phil Redhead, former Notleys Club Captain Kevin Whybrew, and David White Club Chairman.

The Notleys Golf current Club Chairman Dave White, Winter Singles Champion Kevin Whybrew, and Jubilee Cup Competition Chairman Phil Redhead completed the challenge in almost exactly 17 hours from 04:32 to 21:32hrs in some really grueling conditions given that rounds 3 and 4 were played in temperatures of up to 31 degrees! Surprisingly the challenge was answered also with some excellent golf, especially from Dave who was being sponsored on a per par basis and was just shy of his £50 target, but started really well with 39 points and has maintained his handicap or better From left to right, on the 100th hole green at 2132hrs after 17 hours scores from former Macmillan Cancer 72 of golf: David White Notleys GC Club Chairman, former Notleys Club hole Longest Days. Kevin & Phil also did Captain Kevin Whybrew, and Jubilee Cup Chairman Phil Redhead. - 16 -

Awesome Antics Land Golfer in a Hole

W

hat’s worse than getting your ball stuck in a bunker while playing golf? How about getting your head stuck in a bin, like Dave Sayers. The 49-year-old, who plays off a handicap of nine, sparked hysterics when he used his head to achieve a rubbish hole-in-one.

The father-of-two was filmed wearing a pair of brightly-coloured trousers from Royal &

O

Awesome – which uses the tagline ‘for the pars and the bars’, although, in this instance, clearly too much emphasis was placed on the bars – with his head locked firmly in place in a bin, lying on the ground and surrounded by a laughing crowd. Sayers’ rubbish performance occurred while playing in a 24-hour charity golf event for Approach Staffordshire, an Alzheimer’s organisation, at Wolstanton GC. Sayers, a self-employed businessman, told the Stoke Sentinel: “We were coming to the end of the day and I had been losing it a bit with a few bad shots – we’d all had a few beers. “I said, ‘I’m going to bin these clubs’, but they wouldn’t fit. I decided to go a step further. I went to put my head in the bin, but then I couldn’t get it out. “I was stuck like that for about 10 minutes until someone who had been carrying Vaseline, to avoid sores during the golf day, helped get my head out.”

Well Done Chris

utgoing Club Captain of Notleys Golf Club, Chris Jordan, this month fulfilled on a promise he made for his Captaincy in 2014/15. Not only has he provided his home club with an expensive, and eminently usable, defibrillator, which is key for our continuing potential good health, but thanks to all the members at Notleys Golf Club for their support during last year. Chris has handed a cheque to the Braintree Youth Project (www.braintreeyouth.org.uk) today for over £1362! Chris is seen here with the current club captain, (Chris’s then Vice Captain) Adam Painter, who is also very much focussing on raising money in his Captaincy for Farleigh’s Hospice www.farleighhospice.org, and a representative from the excellent Braintree Youth project for his successful campaigning. Chris would like to wish all the best to 2015/16 Notleys Club Captain Adam Painter, and Daz Liversidge, his Vice Captain, over the next twelve months to continue his great works.

On the left the outgoing Notley’s Captain Chris Jordan, and on right current Club Captain Adam Painter, with representative from the Braintree Youth project in the middle receiving the cheque from Chris’s efforts.

Pro Plays 125 Holes in One Day Using One Club and One Ball at Woodford Golf Club

I

t was a mammoth challenge, 125 holes of golf in one day, but Kenny Banks made it with a couple of hours to spare on the longest day of the year.

Kenny is a prolific striker of the ball. He played all the holes off competition tees and regularly hit the 405-yard eighth green in two strikes with his 7-iron; many of the club’s members cannot reach this green off the general play tees – 30 yards shorter – in two shots even when using a driver and a brassie. It was the equivalent of walking a standard marathon while playing solitary golf. And the one thing the weary Kenny complained of at the finish was the punishment inflicted on his legs.Yet he was still fit enough to give his pregnant girlfriend Kelly, she is expecting their child in early August, a big hug to loud cheers from club members. He received a boisterous reception in Kenny Banks (left) is greeted by club secretary Stephen Bland and the clubhouse, and his well-worn ball was Lady Captain Helen Leggett after his epic quest snatched by club secretary Stephen Bland The 27-year-old pro at Woodford Golf Club to be locked away as a memento of a courageous set himself this challenge both to mark the 125th feat. Eventually, it will be placed on a plinth with a anniversary of the establishment of the club on plate attached noting his achievement. Sunset Avenue, but also to raise money for the Kenny got sponsorship from the Woodfordlocal Haven House Children’s Charity as well as based Hills motor group as well as club members the club’s 125 fund. It required Kenny to complete and supporters. He set himself a target to raise 14 circuits of the 9-hole course, measuring 5,491 £500 for Haven House, but in fact, collected more yards, in the depths of Epping Forest. Also he had than £1,000 for the charity. to get from greens to tee, which added a * The battered ball used by Kenny was a substantial additional walking task. Bridgestone. He thought that he had lost it on one Fortunately, it was a warm if a somewhat cloudy morning circuit, but fortunately club member John day when Kenny drove off from the first tee at Beecroft, accompanying him, located it in a bush. 4.40 am. All he had with him was his trusty 7-iron, which he used for driving, chipping and putting - plus a few balls. But he did not need any spare balls because he used the original for the whole 125 holes, meaning the ball survived almost 600 strikes. His best 18 holes came soon after dawn when he clocked a round of 77 gross, a remarkable score when using just one club. Club members accompanied him at various times, and he had the odd comfort stop before finishing his marathon at 7.10 pm. In all, Kenny clocked nine birdies on his quest. Keeping the Triangle for Good Strikes T

his is a great idea for high handicappers starting in the game or those people who struggle to make good contact. Maintaining the triangle is important because it will result in you striking the ball correctly by applying a downward strike. One of the keys to great ball striking is having a firm left wrist at impact - keeping the triangle is a great way for you to picture this. Remember, to get the ball into the air you have to hit down on it slightly. If you make the mistake of trying to scoop the ball into the air, your left wrist will break, which will, then collapse the triangle and this will mean you misshitting the ball by either topping it or duffing it. If you are keeping the triangle solid you should strike

the ball first and then brush the grass just after impact. This means you are applying downward pressure and you will get that effortless feel of strike that you are looking for. A great way to practice this is to hit 20 balls from a full swing set up and work on keeping the triangle by using a small swing. Your aim is to only hit the ball 30 yards, but you are looking for the correct effortless strike. Make sure you hold your finish and check if your triangle has collapsed. If it has, you will notice your left wrist has flicked and the strike didn’t have a very good sound to it. If you have done it correctly the left wrist will be firm and you should get that great sound that characterises good shots.

GOOD GUTS – OR –

BAD GUTS F

ood, glorious food! It’s all very well eating the most perfect, well rounded menu for golf, at the right time. BUT, are you absorbing your nutrients to maximise play? With a rise in Coeliac Disease, Gastro intestinal discomfort, IBS and NCGS (non-Coeliac gluten sensitivity), are you being as GUT FRIENDLY as you could be? Bloating can be a classic sign that your gut is under stress, altered bowel habits, fatigue or reactive hypoglycaemia after meals can all be a sign that your plate doesn’t entirely match what your GI tract needs. Perhaps, if these symptoms mirror your own health, it would be ideal to give your gut some TLC. ‘Rest and Recover’ by taking a couple of weeks off GLUTEN and see how your body responds. Fortunately gut mucosa recovers and just by taking a break you can see how your body adapts by eliminating wheat, barley, rye and oats and replacing these glutenous products with quinoa, rice, potatoes and sweet potatoes for example. Energy levels, concentration, bloating, GI health and joint function can all be improved. Why not take the plunge, after all ... IT TAKES GUTS TO BE HEALTHY! - 24 -

Woodford’s Honour the captain in 1990, the club’s centenary year and president from 2006-2009. Next he was elected president of the Essex Golf Union for a two-year term which ended last year. Now news of his elevation to the highest ranks of the game comes during the club’s 125th anniversary year with a slew of commemorative events planned for August. England Golf, a non-profit organisation, is currently attempting to break down what many perceive as barriers to participation in the game by working in partnership with sports organisers. Peters, who still lives in Leytonstone and is also a member of Wanstead GC, said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity to be involved in the national game at its highest level to help deliver a sound strategy and at the same time recognise the support and encouragement both Woodford and Wanstead golf clubs have given me over many years.” www.englandgolf.org

Orsett Vets Open

O

rsett Golf Club produced a course to be proud of when hosting their annual Orsett Vets Open on June 17th. Fast running fairways, manicured greens and loads of sunshine thrown in for good measure ensured everyone enjoyed the day whatever their score. A gusty breeze meant thirty six stableford points proved an elusive target for most but Christopher Willis from Tandridge managed 39 to win top prize. Stephen Osborne (Hainult) and Peter Steptoe (Upminster) took second and third prizes with Jim Caulfield and Richard Gregory (Both Thorndon Park) taking nearest the and pin nearest the line in the fairway. Prizes for the best front nine or back nine were awarded to P Butterworth (Basildon) and R Taylor (Sweetwoods Park). Well done Orsett Vets for organising a great day and chipping in all the raffle prizes, thus enabling £700 to be raised for the Vets captain’s charity. - 30 -

Essex Schools

South East Team Winners at the National Schools Championships.Three Essex team members, Arron Edwards-Hill, Rebecca Earl and Michael Gilbert.

T

he National finals were held at Peterborough Milton Golf Course on Monday 22nd June in better conditions than the SE round, although rain still spoiled the day. After the 1st 18 holes, a similar pattern to the South East qualifier was beginning to appear. Arron Edwards Hill was yet again in the last group, enjoying his round and playing well. He finished 74 being three shots off the lead. The other Essex players were not in contention but were doing well in the team competition. Harriet Lynch had a good round of 77 in the morning only 4 shots off the lead. The afternoon brought with it a few showers but the scoring didn’t improve as players battling for the lead, a few 72’s were hit including Arron! He finished with a bogey on the last two holes when par was all that was required to win the Championship, but he had to settle for third place overall and an England cap against Scotland in September. Congratulations Arron. Michael Gilbert finished with 78, 76, which put him in 23rd place and Harriet Lynch and Rebecca Earle were 15th and 19th respectfully. Well done girls. Arron Edwards-Hill 3rd place at National Final. - 36 -

After the first round, Arron Edwards-Hill was in joint 2nd with 73 having lipped out his putt on the 18th to be in joint 1st. The standard scratch of 75 showed just how tough the round had proved. The afternoon 18 was an Rebecca Earl of Felsted School improvement in the third place in the girls SE weather and the Championship at John O'Gaunt. morning play with one competitor even breaking par! Bradley Cole of Barking Abbey and Jack Dyer, Southend Boys Grammar' both improved in their second rounds by 2 shots.Although Michael Gilbert and Arron both dropped more shots. Arron hung on and playing in the last group kept his steady play going to come through with a 75 to be in 2nd place overall. Well played Arron! The team played well but unfortunately finished as runners up. However, Arron and Michael were selected to play for the South East at the National Championships. The girls had just a difficult time with Rebecca Earl of Felsted School scoring 75 and 81 to put her in 3rd place overall and also selected for the Nationals. In recent years we have allowed other club officials to play if the Captain or Secretary/Manager is not available. This year’s event, hosted by Abridge Golf Club, attracted 84 players. COUNTY TEAM Essex v BB & O England Golf South Eastern Group (Northern Region)

Seven of the eight singles matches went to the 18th green as Essex battled to victory over Berks, Bucks & Oxon in the second England Golf South Eastern Group League (North) match of the season. Played at Frilford Heath Golf Club near Abingdon, Oxfordshire, Essex led 2 ½ to 1 ½ after the morning foursomes, and despite all but one of the singles matches going to the wire, Essex picked up 5 ½ points to win the match 8-4. In what is traditionally one of the team’s toughest fixtures, the singles matches saw Mitchel Sarling lead by example and secure the first point of the afternoon with a near Albatross on the par 4 ninth with a magnificent approach. The next fixture is on August 2 at Canons Brook Golf Club against Middlesex, who have also won their first two League Matches. Essex were represented by: Arthur Leonard, Mitchel Sarling and Taylor Carter (Rochford Hundred), Andy May (Boyce Hill), Jay Beisser (The Rayleigh Club), Elliott Oxlade (Chelmsford),Todd Clements and Ed Fullerlove (Braintree). - 43 -

Essex County News by Neil Silver, Press Officer, Essex Golf Union www.essexgolfunion.org email: info@essexgolfer.com

COLTS TEAM Colts v Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Boyce Hill hosted the first of the 2015 County Colts Triangular Matches, which saw Essex come out on top. The format saw eight-man teams from Essex, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire play four morning foursomes and eight afternoon singles – all in threeballs. The morning highlight was Tom Barker and Dan Garner winning their match against Hertfordshire 8&7, and then triumphing 4&2 over Bedfordshire. The afternoon singles saw an improvement from the team overall, boosted by news of early wins for Elliott Oxlade and Mitchel Sarling, as every team member contributed to the final tally. The final result was: Essex 16 ½, Beds 13 ½, Herts 6. Essex were represented by: Captain Tom Barker (Channels), Dan Garner (Romford), Elliott Oxlade and Brandon Meads (Chelmsford),Taylor Carter and Mitchel Sarling (Rochford Hundred), Joe Finn and Jack Phillips (Bentley).

Colts v Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire

The second of the three matches in this triangular series was washed out by heavy June rain at Millbrook Golf Club in Bedfordfordshire. The morning foursomes saw Essex beat Beds 3&1 and Herts 2½&1½, but with everyone soaked to the skin and it proving impossible to hold on to the club it was agreed by the three team managers that the afternoon round would be abandoned. - 44 -

U14 JUNIOR GOLF TOUR North Weald Home knowledge helped North Weald’s Harvey Sullivan record an impressive gross score of 79 (8 over par) to lift the prize for his age group and playing to his handicap, in the second event of the Tour. James Holt from Chelmsford Golf club dominated the Under 13 section with an 82, while Teddy Papple (Sock Brook Manor) and Matthew Best (Channels) scored 83 and 97 respectively to be the best in their age ranges.. In the Handicap event an impressive nett 64 helped Luke Thornton (Channels) win the Under 14 section. The winner of the Under 13 prize was Thomas Vass (Five Lakes) who is actually in the Under 12 section. He won on countback from Louis Altham (North Weald) and Adam Crawley (Stock Brook Manor). The event clashed with The Essex Girls championship, so the girls were missed on this occasion.

Forrester Park Lily Humphries (Channels) scored a gross 74 to win the third event on the tour, played at Forrester Park. Lily’s nett score of 69 meant she won both girls’ prizes Harvey Payne (Chelmsford) took the Under 14 prize with a gross 77. The Handicap prize in the Under 14 section went to Joe Whiting (Boyce Hill) with a fantastic net 61. The U13 prizes went to William Buckley (North Weald) scoring a Gross 82 and a consequent Nett 64. Prizes are not awarded on the Under 12 Tour but mention should be made of Teddy Papple (Stock Brook Manor) who scored a gross 85 and Beau Brunning (Three Rivers) with a nett 67. Rory Bennett (Hainault Forest) is under 11 and scored a nett 74 playing off 16 handicap. The conditions benefited the more experienced players in the field of 56. The next event is at Langdon Hills on Monday 27 July 2015.

Clifford Crook It is with much sadness that we announced the death of Clifford Crook, a past president of the Essex Golf Union, who passed away on 28 April, a week after he turned 81. Cliff held various positions on the Executive Committee during his association with the County Union, including Rules Official and County Press Officer. A great supporter of all Essex Golf Union activities, he will be sadly missed. - 45 -

The Essex County Golf Conference Growing Golf in Essex Why do we need to grow golf in Essex? Golf is still the fifth most popular participation sport in England, but golf is in decline while other sports are growing. The distribution of Sport England funding is based on growth in participation. So with declining participation and club membership; and reduced Sport England funding, Golf as we know it faces a difficult future and a massive challenge for all of us who love the game. The County Golf Union’s main role in life is men’s elite golf player development, through county teams and championships. The current national trend in club membership is now an annual decline of just over 4%. If this trend is left unchecked there is likely to be little or no future elite golf development in England. England Golf are taking action and in 2014 have produced a strategic plan under the banner “Raising Our Game Together” this plan sets out a strategic framework from 2014 to 2017.The main ambition in the plan is to increase participation from 750,000 people playing golf once a week to 910,000; and to reverse the decline in club membership which has been declining annually since 2005 and stabilise it at the 2014 level of 675,000 members. The plan is in progress and new ideas are evolving, with pilot programmes running in three counties (not including Essex). This problem can only be solved at club level and by working together. In Essex most clubs are working hard to retain and recruit members and the annual decline in club membership is around 3.5% pa, which is a concern, but not as severe as the national average. In response to this worrying trend in membership and participation and in support of the good work of the Essex Golf Partnership, the Essex Golf Union have decided to take action and with support from the Essex Ladies Association and the Essex Golf Partnership are investing in a 2015 Essex County Golf Conference under the banner ”Growing Golf in Essex”. Essex Golf Union will invite all 79 affiliated clubs to attend and take part in this event being held at Langdon Hills Golf Club on 18th November 2015. The conference will present a forum for all clubs and a broader golf community in Essex to jointly debate and identify innovative solutions to the core problem of dwindling participation rates and membership. It will combine three keynote speakers and round table discussions involving all delegates to share ideas, identify good practice and a further plan of actions. Initial invitations will go to all affiliated clubs, seeking the attendance of a club decision maker or key influencer with responsibility to grow membership and participation.A second place may be available subject to availability. Attendance by younger golfers such as junior captains should also be encouraged. The entire day will be funded by The Essex Golf Union and sandwich lunch and refreshments will be provided. The day will be chaired by Essex Golf Union President Mike Hart and following the welcome, the day will open with the first keynote speaker Alan Walker PGA Master Professional and Golf entrepreneur. Alan has a highly successful career in golf and golf club development. The second keynote speaker Chris Brindley, MD of Metro Bank, a banker and businessman, will challenge delegates to think somewhat differently about the challenge. The rest of the morning will be taken up with floor questions to a panel including the speakers. Following an informal networking lunch, possibly including some structured discussions, the afternoon will start in smaller groups at round tables to discuss five key themes. By mid-afternoon the round table sessions will be summarised and the third and final keynote speaker David Joy CEO England Golf will talk on taking bold steps and changing landscapes, based very much on what has been heard from Essex clubs. The day will close with final questions and wrap up session including a joint plan of working together and what happens next? Invitations will be posted from the County Office in due course, meanwhile if you feel ready for the challenge, please ink in “Growing Golf in Essex” in your 2015 diary for 18th November. The Jubilee Cup

Update from Jubilee Cup Committee, sponsored by Seabrook Warehousing, and reported by Chairman Phil Redhead

T

his will be the final update prior to the 2015 Jubilee Cup play-off qualifiers will be announced. Things are really reaching a crescendo and just waiting for the fourth round to complete by 5th July – check out the web-site as the 8 qualifiers will be announced! Before we get into that, however, can I be the first to congratulate Bentley GC for already winning outright Division D, even though they have one match still to play at time of going to press, following three wins out of 3 scheduled matches. Yet even though there is only one Division D match yet to play, I know that John Tanner’s North Weald GC team will be giving it their best to improve on their final Division position which still could significantly change their standing. Throughout the other Divisions, play-off position is still very hotly contested with fourteen more teams with the potential to get through to the Quarter Finals as Division Champions in 2015. Quarter finals to be completed by 2nd August 2015

We are now coming to a crucial point in the Jubilee Cup 2015 season with only one League round left (Round Four) prior to the arrangements of the Knock Phase of Quarter and then Semi Finals etc. By the time you read this we will have the results in already and will have posted to our website, and determine who progresses to the final stages from all our 2015 entrants! Division A will very much come down to a climactic battle between Stapleford Abbotts and Royal Epping (although West Essex are still not out yet), and with Division B ending in a three-way contest between Playgolf Colchester, local rivals Colchester GC and also Stoke-by-Nayland. Division C requires an outright win by Burnham-on-Crouch over Benton, with Division E coming down to excellent supporters of the competition Woolston Manor and our most northern contestant Harwich & Dovercourt. The central Essex clubs dominate Division F final with Crondon Park (scene to many

Last, but by no means least, Division G will be won by either Ballards Gore or The Essex who currently have the same number of points so will need to pull out there best performance before 5th July! As we move forward to the play-offs, and on behalf of the members of the Committee, I would like to thank ALL participant clubs in the 2015 competition who have been SO supportive of us as a Committee, and given such excellent feedback on their experiences during this season.THANK YOU so much for your contributions, and I hope you can support us as venues for quarter and semi-final matches and look forward to seeing you for the 2016 competition! From a very personal perspective, I had a great game in my last match (actually round 3) against a Jubilee Cup newcomer from Top Meadow GC (Ray Nicholls) and only managed to bring back a victory on the very last hole. Great game though, and I have had so much enjoyment from the friendly and competitive matches I have played this year around Essex and at Notleys GC. Check out the all the full Round Four results at: www.jubileecup.com/matches2015/draw4.htm which will be played by 5th July. The Road to the Final as I write is shown below, but LOTS could change by the time this edition is published so please so check on our website w w w. j u b i l e e c u p. c o m / m a t c h e s 2 0 1 5 / qsf_sheet_2015.html For all the rounds, you can see all the detail down to individual player v player or 4BBB games by checking details on the website. To do this, go to the URL above, hover over the “Results & Tables” button underneath our sponsor’s banner for Seabrook Warehousing, and choose “2015 Results & Tables”. Click into the Round you wish to see, find the match you wish to review and then click “Show Match” (on right hand side of the listed match). This will bring up the results cards showing all singles and pairs match results. Coming now to the phases when we will require full Committee support, plus additional help, can I please ask you for your much needed help to provide the level of support at the Semi and Finals - can you help out on weekend of 29th August and/or Sunday 27th September as supporters of the Committee – please get in touch as per the contact details on the website or this publication! T

he 1st Summer Meeting of the Society of Essex Lady Captains, proved extremely popular and a large field of 88 past and present Lady Captains from 33 golf clubs across the County descended on Braintree Golf Club in mid-June. On a hot and humid afternoon with a varying breeze, the Lady Captains took to the well-presented course for their 4BBB stableford competition off full handicap.

After the golf the Lady Captains enjoyed a delicious carvery and choice of dessert. Six pairs scored 40 or more points and all but one of the 8 prizes were decided on count back. Third place went to Penny Elder (Garon Park) & Mary Graham (Benton Hall) with 41 points ocb, 2nd were Celia Markham (Colne Valley) & Helen Newman (Benton Hall) on 42 points ocb. In first place and winners of the Froom Cup also on 42 points was Amanda Mitchell (Crondon Park) and Ann Martin (Five Lakes). Grateful thanks to Braintree Golf Club for hosting the event and to management, staff and Lady Captain Toni Brockwell for helping us to make it a fabulous day. The winners of the Summer Meeting are pictured with Jan Collier (Lady President of the Society) and Toni Brockwell (Lady Captain Braintree Golf Club). The annual match against Kent Lady Captains Society was played at Langdon Hills in early June. Despite a heavy shower and very windy conditions both teams had a great day.The course was in excellent condition and thanks to Langdon Hills for their wonderful buffet. Essex won 3 1/2 to 1 1/2.

BUDDING

CHAMPIONS? W

ith much being written recently regarding the decline in participation figures within golf in particular Women, we must not forget the Roots of the industry namely the children which is a highly specialised and important coaching area. Junior golf has never been more accessible for our kids with the work PGA Professionals carry out in schools with the follow on club activities. The knowledge in this area has developed specifically over the past 5 years, the image below is hopefully one we will continue to see less and less within the group coaching format. The lines of juniors each Saturday just hitting balls down the practice range with regular monotony with very little progression omitting the one critical ingredient the fun element. I decided to visit the States and take the TPI Junior L2 Qualification 5 years ago which was very

informative, nothing technically related but solely concentrating on the development and awareness of children at various stages of their golfing life. I encourage every child I coach to play a multitude of sports rather than focusing primarily upon golf at an early age.

- 50 -

This is my typical equipment bag which I use for my Junior golf Camps and coaching, the kids love it as it is different and exciting! I remember the TPI team mentioning that “speed” is difficult to add at a later stage so this is one important focal points a child can never possess too much speed in golf. Here are just a few simple skills which I would encourage you to do with your child prior to or in addition to commencing golf lessons at an early age. Each skill level will be different depending upon a multitude of factors but to start the movements is important. The association will also relate golf to “Fun” not necessarily the new “hold” • Throwing a ball, this movement will inadvertently coach to produce power whilst using the upper body and lower body. • Skipping It is surprising how many young players are unable to skip, this is a well coordinated movement and helps to separate the upper body from the lower body. • Much has been written about Foot Golf, personally as a conversion tool I have my reservations but the concept which TPI has employed for many years is tremendous. It will help the lower body to rotate and can be used to coach how to “shape” shots in a natural non- technical way. • The foam frisbiee is a great way for kids to use their wrists which is a major component in the golf swing, throwing the frisbiee with both hands is a tricky skill. The problem is they will ask you to do it too! So you had better practice it. • My favourite warm up I use is the Tee Ball first hitting from a static position then stepping into the shot, again all these movements are golf related unknown to the children. Instead of venturing off to the range at an early age why not visit the park first with a small bag of goodies! Your kids will love it. - 51 -

Brown Powers to Essendon Triumph

Essendon Country Club owner Kieran Griffin hands over the trophy to PGA East Region Championship winner Stuart Brown.

S

tuart Brown (Thorpe Wood) landed his second Order of Merit win after overcoming James Taverner (Hendon) in a thrilling PGA East Region Championship at Essendon Country Club. The duo, playing together in the final group, fought out a titanic battle that went right to the wire over Essendon’s New Course. Brown finally triumphed by two shots, signing for scores of 69 and 68 that left him at sevenunder-par. The pair had been level at six-under, after they both picked up a stroke against the card at the par-5 16th. But Brown made a pressure-packed putt from eight feet for birdie at the 17th to edge ahead – and then Taverner pulled his tee-shot into a hazard at the last. That allowed Brown to enjoy his walk up the 18th fairway before he closed out with a good ‘up

and down’ from behind the green for a closing par. He said: “Persistence pays off! It had got a little bit frustrating, having been in the last few groups at every tournament and not getting the job done, so it is nice to cross the winning line. I’m really pleased, to be honest. “It is my second Order of Merit win – I won one in 2011 at Wanstead in a playoff. So, it’s been a few barren years but it is nice to get the second one on the board. This gives you the confidence again to know you can do it.” In the past two seasons, Brown has suffered the frustration of just missing out on the end of season playoffs in Turkey that offer the top-10 a passport to the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. But with his fine win at Essendon and a solid showing earlier in the month at the Weston Homes Bishop’s Stortford Classic, he is the early

pace-setter in this year’s race. He added: “There are five more Order of Merit events to go. I’ll get stuck into them and try and get another one under my belt.” Taverner had the lead for much of the final round but he lost his ball off the tee at the 14th and recorded a double bogey to hand the initiative to Brown. But the Middlesex golfer dug in and bounced back with successive birdies. He hung tough with a great scrambled ‘save’ at the 17th but his race was run once he was forced to take a drop under penalty on the final hole. Taverner said: “Overall, I am fairly content. I enjoyed being in the hunt, coming down the stretch...that was great. There are just three shots I’d like to have again. But it was a big improvement on recent performances.” It was a memorable two days for PGA trainee James Mynott (St Ives), who finished third – his best performance in an Order of Merit event to date. His short game was electric, chipping in for birdies at 10 and 18 on his way to an overall total of four-under-par tally. Mynott said: “Hopefully, this will give me belief. I haven’t hit it the best but still managed to score, so that is really good for my confidence for the rest of the year.” Glen Portelli (Verulam) matched Brown’s second-round 68 to move up to fourth spot, while Ian Ellis (Great Yarmouth & Caister), James Ruebotham (Welwyn Garden City) and David Salisbury (Three Rivers) shared fifth place. Thornton Cup Delight

The Clacton GC Thornton Cup team and Caddies at Frinton-on-Sea Golf Club.

C

lacton-on-Sea Golf Club’s Essex Golf Union “Thornton Cup” team, under Team Captain Peter Hewett travelled to our near neighbours and good friends Frinton-on-Sea Golf Club, to play in the county’s premier team event. Speculation has been at fever point in the build up to this match, as the two club`s have not met in this competition for several years. In the morning’s foursomes, Jamie Reed & Tom Heffer won 4&3 and Danny Thomas & Ben Rendell also won 4&3, to leave Clacton trailing by three matches to two matches at lunch. Captain Hewett rallied his team and sent them out for the afternoon singles matches in the order that he felt was best for the team. After the last match went through the 9th hole, the match was looking in favour of Frinton. Clacton were up in 3 and down in 5, with 2 matches being all square. The Clacton players urged on by Captain Hewett and a good contingent of Clacton members then started to dig deep. Jamie Read was down 5 with 6 to play and won on the 18th against James Hyde, which showed the spirit of the Clacton team, Matt Baker, who was playing terrific golf with 5 birdies in his round to win 6&4 against James Taggert. Ben Rendell lost 4&3 against Kevin Smith. Nick Tedder-Ward won 2 up against Chay Pratt. Andy Hobbs got a well-earned half against Tigg Tanner. Jiwan Rai won 1 up against Joe Bushell.Tom Heffer won 2&1 against Simon O`Brien and Danny Thomas won 5&4 against Hamish Stubbs. Billy Leonard lost 1 down against Peter Irwin and in the final match, Mark Chamberlain won 1 up against Stuart Grimwade, to give Clacton a 9 1/2 matches to 5 1/2 matches win and set up a quarter-final match against Chigwell GC to be played at Bentley GC near Brentwood on 19th July.

“Bronze Trophy” at Clacton Clacton Golf Club’s winning Essex Ladies Golf Union “Bronze Trophy” team and caddies.

C

lacton-on-Sea Golf Club’s Lady Captain Julia Hewett welcomed the Ladies from Langdon Hills Golf Club to the Clacton Club for the playing of their fifth match in the Essex Ladies Golf Union “Bronze Trophy.” Having won three and lost only one to date, hopes were high as having home advantage is a great benefit. The weather lived up to normal expectations. It was very windy and cold, but at least the Ladies didn’t get wet! The Clacton Ladies team of Sonja Strutt, Di Kedge, Heather Bradfield, Chris Crossfield, Jenny Corbyn, Kath Sinnott & Gilly Cullen and

caddies Mary Cole, Jacky Bright and Captain Julia Hewett all had a tough day but over a very pleasant lunch the Lady Captain from Langdon Hills, thanked Clacton for a wonderful day’s golf on a course that looked an absolute picture, even though it did catch them out once or twice! She then announced that Clacton had won the match by 5 matches to 2 matches. Clacton Ladies have one more match to play in the league section of this competition; this is away against Stoke by Nayland.

Clacton Win Boudica Bowl Clacton Golf Club’s Winning “Boudica Bowl” Team at Frinton Golf Club.

The Boudica Bowl” has been played between Harwich & Dovercourt GC, Braintree GC, Colchester GC, Clacton-on-Sea GC and Frinton GC since 1993. For the 2015 match, the host club was Frinton GC and on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, on a course presented in first class condition, the match got under way. The wind made scoring difficult in this mixed greensome event. However, at the end of the match, it was announced that for the first time since 2007, Clacton GC had won, with a score of 132 points, in second place were Braintree GC and Frinton GC both with 128 points, in fourth place was

Colchester GC with 123 points and in fifth place was Harwich & Dovercourt GC with 108 points. The Clacton team was Lady Captain Julia Hewett, Lady Vice Captain Gilly Cullen, Jennie Corbyn, Denise Pink, Chris Crossfield, Di Kedge, Captain Steve Parks, Clayton Jeffrey, Alan Hearn, Kevin Hill, Steve Scott and Peter Hewett. Colchester’s Hannah Butcher and John Dornan returned the best individual score of 34 points on countback from Clacton’s Gilly Cullen and Peter Hewett also with 34 points, Nearest the pin winners were Ladies, Sheila Attrill (Frinton) on the 16th Hole and Men, Malcolm King (Frinton) at the 3rd hole.

Windfall For Roberta R

oberta Bodsworth took the Ladies Windfall Trophy competition apart at Colchester Golf Club with an impressive 44 points stableford. Bodsworth who had been hovering around the top spot in recent competitions finally let rip, playing the equivalent of eight shots below her 21 handicap. She was six points ahead of Shelley Persent (19) who herself returned an excellent 38 points. On the heels of Persent were three ladies all sharing 36 points and after a countback Jo Mager (21) was given third spot followed by Gill Minns (17) and Catherine Chick (28). In sixth was Janet Tebbutt (25) with 33 points. After a run of near misses Bodsworth’s first nine holes impressed as she was just four over par at the turn and had accumulated 25 stableford points with her card showing two birdies and five pars. The second nine was not quite so impressive, but the 19 points scored was more than sufficient for her to progress and play in the Windfall Trophy to be played at Gosfield Lake in September.

Congratulations To Neil & Kyle N

eil Arnold and Kyle Appleton astonished the indeed Dave Humberstone (13) and Chris Doyle field when they returned a better ball score (13) must have been with their 44 points, but all of 47 points in the Dick Procter Trophy at to no avail. Scoring on the day was a reflection of the course which is now in superb condition Colchester Golf Club. 100 members teed off in this open pairs, three- and a compliment to the hard work put in by quarter handicap. Better ball stableford Keith Chinnery and his staff. competition first played three years ago. Arnold and Appleton’s score was no fluke either. With respective handicaps of 15 and 16 closer inspection of their card showed an example of perfect blending with Arnold contributing on eight of the holes and Arnold doing the rest. Twenty-four points on the first half with twenty-three on the back nine did not put them clear of the rest of the field. On a day where there were twentytwo pairs scoring 40 or more Tim Rogers(10) playing with the Club Captain, John Williams (15) had an impressive 45 points on their card and must have been quietly confident Dick Bokenham with Neil Arnold and Kyle Appleton along with when they finished their round. As John Williams, Captain. - 55 -

Win For Jacob In Victory Cup Qualifier

I

t was all round good golf at Colchester Golf Club as the members played in the mixed Victory Cup qualifier. Jacob Farson with a nett 66 took top spot after a countback with Robert Bloomfield losing out after returning the same score. This is not the end of the story as the top fourteen men, and the top two women go through into the knockout stages of the Victory Cup. Presented by the war time captain (1940-1945) HF “Brigger” Potter in 1945, the competition is always hotly contested and this year some 86 members took part. To qualify this year the golf had to be sharp, as all the men qualifiers scored under 70 nett. Farson started off with a birdie, and he acquired two more before standing on the 9th tee one under gross for the round. His 9th whilst not exactly his downfall proved to be his problem hole, and he ended up carding a double bogey seven. A back nine of level par from the five handicapper showed a consistency which was rewarded by top spot.

Second placed Bloomfield (13) was three under par on the par three’s alone, but for a double to start plus a treble at mid way he would have finished in first place in this qualifying.

Karl Morris, who has helped Major Champions Darren Clarke, Graeme McDowell, Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel, will bring his Mind Factor workshop to the Thorpeness Festival of Golf this July. Golfers taking part in the three day festival will benefit from Morris’ proven approach to the psychology of golf and learn practical ways to play better golf without changing their golf swings. Karl Morris, said: “I’m looking forward to heading to Suffolk to help golfers simplify the way they think about golf and demonstrate proven and practical ways to play better golf without needing major surgery on their swing, changes in their equipment or physique. My goal is that all those playing in the festival can immediately go to the course feeling clearer

and more confident about their ability to play golf well.” The evening workshop will take place on July 29th, the evening before the Thorpeness Cup, the main event of the festival, and will be free to festival entrants and golf Karl Morris. break guests. The workshop is called ‘5 Shots Lower WITHOUT Changing Your Swing,’ with Karl Morris and starts at 7.30pm in the Thorpeness Golf Club clubhouse. arah Bennett PGA Head Teaching Professional at Three Rivers & England U18 East regional Head Coach has been awarded Fellow status by the PGA. Sarah has been involved within the industry for over 20 yrs competing at the highest level as a plus 4 hcp amateur player and then a Ladies European Tour member playing worldwide, she still holds membership of the Tour and is involved in a number of their initiatives to drive interest within the game at Grass roots level, disability and the Womens game.

Sarah has just announced a new Junior Event within Essex which was the brainchild of Sarah and one of the parents who joined GolfingGirl 5 years ago since starting golf at 5 yrs of age. Sarah has been a member of the WPGA committee for 4 years now and is passionate about the game and assisting where she can utilise her diverse experience within the game. Sarah will be taking a group of County players again which she initiated last year to the upcoming LEM at the Buckinghamshire next year in between coaching within the Swingzone nets at the events. “It will be a cracking week for everyone at a beautiful venue with the Solheim Cup around the corner the perfect event for the family to experience numerous activities whilst witnessing some fantastic golf.” The PGA has a number of different categories of membership PGA Members that are awarded to some individual PGA Professionals following successful submission of a formal application. These awards, can be achieved in the varying roles of a PGA Professional, recognise either previous experience, further education, achievements or accreditations. The award of ‘Fellow PGA Professional’ may be made to an individual who demonstrates that they meet the established criteria and have been fully qualified for a minimum of eight years. Specifically from a coaching perspective, the awards panel are looking for evidence of sustained influence and success with players who have gone on to success at national level. Sarah has been made a ‘Fellow PGA Professional’ in recognition of her continued influence as a coach over a number of years with a variety of players. More recently this work hasincluded her involvement as an U18 Regional Head Coach within the England Golf Performance Team, but also reflects her ongoing work with golfers of all abilities, and particularly her passion for encouraging more women to see golf as a game they would like to play. Sarah has recently been involved in the first ever ‘Women into High Performance’ Coaching programme led by sports coach UK, which has been hugely beneficial – and also led Sarah to meeting HRH The Princess Royal to discuss issues facing women coaches in sport. This award is a significant achievement and The PGA congratulate Sarah on becoming a Fellow PGA Professional.

Connect With Your Core PART

Conditioning TWO ... The Abdominals

T

he Abdominals are split into 4 parts, the rectus Abdominals, the transverse Abdominals, the internal obliques and external obliques. The Abdominals have many functions in the body, protection of the organs, they provide movement and support to the trunk, assist the breathing process but most importantly, in relation to golf, the Abdominals provide postural support. They act as an in built corset to the body, supporting the spine and holding everything in place ... hence being so very important to condition in any sport. The most common thing I hear when it comes to training the Abdominals is "how many crunches a day should I do?" I would not use crunches at all in a core/abdominal programme, crunches will predominately train the rectus Abdominals, these set of muscles are important but should not be targeted until the deeper muscles are strong and stable. All you will need is a Swiss ball and a blood

pressure cuff to get the lower Abdominals and deep abdominal wall functioning. Firstly, I would teach how to breath and use the abdominal wall, followed by contracting the transverse Abdominals correctly, then internal obliques then external obliques. Using exercises such as the horse stance, 4 point tummy vacuum, lower Abdominals series 1-4. Every golfer when starting a gym programme should start here, with a good quality core and postural programme. I have mentioned the book “the golf biomechanics manual” by Paul Chek, this really is a fantastic book to condition the Abdominals. Another book I love is “flatten your abs forever” by Paul Chek ... never underestimate the diet and abdominal function. In part 3 I am going to discuss the importance of the back!! Back care you will all agree as golfers is VITAL!!

England Golf: ‘Raising Our Game’ E

ngland Golf, the governing body for amateur golf in England, has introduced Justin Rose and Charley Hull as ambassadors, the announcement supporting their strategy ‘Raising Our Game’ 2015 – 2017. England Golf understands the challenges facing the game and have set out a clear vision to combat these issues. The strategy is designed to shift the perception of golf and increase membership and participation, creating an even brighter future for golf. England Golf is committed to increasing the number of people that play golf regularly by March 2017, reversing the decline of club members and providing excellent championships for golfers of all levels. The strategy will also strengthen the talent development pathway from club to national level, leading to even more international success for English players.

David Joy, CEO of England Golf.

At the announcement event David Joy, CEO of England Golf, commented: “We are delighted to welcome Justin and Charley as our ambassadors.

Justin, the 2013 US Open Champion, and Charley, the youngest ever Solheim Cup player, both represented England as amateurs before embarking on their stellar professional careers. Their support will be invaluable as part of our strategy to inspire new golfers and spread the message that golf is a game for all.” He added: “We are aware, like many other sports, golf faces challenges around declining participation. We now better understand these issues and are committed to delivering our strategy ‘Raising Our Game’ halting the decline in participation and membership and bringing growth back to golf in England.” The ‘Raising Our Game’ strategy is built around seven key themes: • More Players • More Members • Stronger Clubs • Winning Golfers • Outstanding Championships • Improved Image • Excellent Governance Within the strategy there are recommendations for golf clubs, county organisations and England Golf nationally. Key performance indicators have been put in place to measure the success of the plan, including increasing the number of people playing golf once a week and reversing the decline in club membership. The measurements include a focus on increasing women and junior members in clubs. England Golf was formed in January 2012, when the English Golf Union merged with the English Women’s Golf Association. It is one of the largest sports governing bodies in England looking after the interests of over 1,900 golf clubs and 675,000 men, women and junior club members. Golf makes a contribution of £3.4 billion per annum to the English economy, it is also the fifth largest participation sport in the country. www.englandgolf.org - 61 -
