The Golf Show 2014 to take place on 7-9 October The Golf Show 2014, has announced it is to return to the Harrogate International Centre (HIC), Yorkshire, on 7-9 October when it will, once more, welcome PGA Professionals, industry suppliers and high-profile guest speakers. Europe’s largest golf trade and educational event is free to attend for PGA Professionals and combines an exhibition of the latest products and services with an extensive education programme featuring seminars on a variety of topics aimed at helping delegates enhance their businesses. Now in its fifth year, The Golf Show, also sees the return, by popular demand, of the Teaching and Coaching Conference, which, in the past, has welcomed headline guests David Leadbetter and Pete Cowen, among further speakers on the

business of teaching and coaching golf. John Davis, The Golf Show Event Manager, said: “We are committed to making each show better than the last, giving even greater value to both delegates and exhibitors, who continue to show their support – many high-profile brands have already committed to this year’s event. “Work is well under way to prepare for The Golf Show 2014, and PGA members, who have helped shape the free educational programme will be able to register to attend, online, in early May.” To find out more about The Golf Show 2014, visit www.golftradeshow.co.uk follow @GolfTradeShow on Twitter and Like The Golf Trade Show on Facebook.

You Are Never Too Old Miguel Angel Jimenez became the first man over the age of 50 to win on the European Tour with victory in a three-man play-off at the Spanish Open.

Spring Special 18 holes & Chef Special Weekday £25 / Weekend £30

Offer available from 11.00am

Par on the first extra hole, the 18th, was enough to give him the title. The world number 34’s first win at his home national tournament came at the 27th attempt. Of his 21 victories on the European Tour, 14 have come since he turned 40. The success also extends Jimenez’s own record for being the oldest winner in European Tour history to 50 years and 133 days. His last win came at the age of 49 years and 337 days at the 2014 Hong Kong Open.

COLCHESTER

With Rory doing so well at Wentworth and Charlie Hull taking the ladies tour both in Europe and America by storm, golf is looking very exciting at the moment. Put this with a mixture a good weather and a bit of rain every course should now be at it’s best. We also have 2 more majors coming up and again with many Europeans in such go form (there is hope for you over fifties after Miguel Jimenez has proved. Although you may have to take up smoking cigars, drink more red wine, eat finer food and find a second wife to emulate his feat, it may be worth considering!!) it could prove a great spectacle. This month there are 4 more deals based on our 20th anniversary. This again has a good mix of short game equipment, long game and looking smart on the course. As a final mention from last month our sales of lithium batteries moved up ten fold from last year as people get to understand how the benefits out weigh the high price compared to a lead acid one. If you ask nicely in store the staff will honour our offer from last month of £20 off each one.

ESSEX GOLFER SCORES TWO HOLE IN ONE’S An amateur golfer from Upminster scored two holes-in-one, on the same hole, in a fortnight – and even had a photographer on hand to record the second. Ian Law, 44, a member at Upminster Golf Club, recorded his first ace in a social round with friends – “a team waltz!” – on the 131-yard, parthree 18th. And, when he was next due to play - in a monthly medal – to commemorate the achievement, the club’s competition secretary, Dennis Broadway, stood alongside the 18th green waiting to take Law's picture when he completed his round. But, as Law explained, Broadway was able to capture an even more momentous occasion. He said: “Before I teed off I saw Dennis stand up from a bench behind the green with his camera round his neck after recognising our group. I joked to my playing partners to smarten themselves up as they might be in the background of my picture. “I teed off first, from the back tees, and there was a stiff wind against, so I took an extra club. I hit a lovely shot which hit the green – which is protected by bunkers and trees – and took a few hops. Then we saw it drop in the hole and when Dennis, who was greenside, put his thumbs up, our group was ecstatic. “The others teed off and I strode up proudly to pick my ball out of the hole. We were the last group out, so the others were just off the green when I got my hole-in-one and a few of them saw it go in, so I had a nice reception when I got to Dennis and the other members of our group. “They were astounded that I had done it again. I joked to Dennis that I saw him there waiting for me and thought I had to get another hole-in-one.” Law’s second ace entitled him to win a limitededition BOSS Watch because he scored it in an official club competition. The luxury German brand

has once again pledged to reward club golfers with an exclusive watch for every hole-in-one recorded during a qualifying club competition in 2014 after giving away £600,000-worth of limited-edition mementos in 2013. Law added: “I was made up when I received an email from HowDidiDo informing me that I would be getting a BOSS Watch for my achievement. I would have thought my first hole-in-one would have been the most memorable – but for me it was the second.” www.bosswatches.co.uk

SOME NATURAL IDEAS The golf industry is awash with various training aids that “guarantee” success, I wrote an article a few months ago on certain characteristics that I would personally look for in a training aid so have a peek in the previous editions. I thought that I would give you some very simplistic and effective ideas that you can use to assist with any swing changes you are currently working on, which are FREE. Shadow in the Sun My first one is very seasonal so unfortunately can’t be relied upon here in the UK but can be used to work on a number of swing “faults” which include: • Swaying – Moving the body excessively away from the target in the backswing • Vertical rise on the back swing • Loss of height on the backswing Simply use your shadow whilst marking your head position as shown in Figure 1 this will allow you to work on any rise and fall during your backswing providing immediate feedback. Slippery Slopes Sloping ground is an incredibly effective method for working on backswing faults whilst providing the added benefit of hitting balls from the lie and understanding the shot outcome.

Fig 1: Starting position and ideal.

Fig 2: “Rise”

If your backswing is too vertical or steep then try making some practice swings on a slope with the ball positioned above the level of your feet . This will give you the feeling of a more “rounded or level” arm swing. If your shoulder turn is too “flat” or you swing the club too much around the body then the slope where the ball lies below the level of your feet is the one for you to use. This will encourage a naturally “steeper” backswing position. If your range has even subtle slopes think about how this can assist with your practice. I will explain how to play these shots in next months edition of Essex Golfer.

Don’t disturb the Divots If you are a player who slices or is prone to the odd shank… a few insignificant divots could come to the rescue! Position a few divots on top of each other as shown in Figure 3 and try to hit the shot without disturbing the divots!!! There is no damage to your clubhead and it is simple to set up.

Juniper Family From Essex Crowned the Lee Westwood Golf Tour Family Knockout National Champions. The conclusion of the inaugural Lee Westwood Golf Tour – Family Knockout competition saw the Juniper family take the championship with a 3 & 1 win over the Tym family. The Tym family, of Wrexham Golf Club, had made this competition a real family affair by using a combination of mother, father and son in their journey to secure their place at the national final. Unfortunately for Dorne, Jonathon and Chris, a current Lee Westwood Golf School student, they were unable to take the title. Representing the south region and West Essex Golf Club, the Juniper family were made up of father and son pairing John and Charlie and had played their way through three qualifying matches and a semi-final to meet the Tym family at the National Final, hosted by Macdonald Portal Hotel, Golf & Spa in Tarporley. The final turned out to be a hotly contested match between the Juniper and Tym families, played in good spirits on a tough blustery day and taking it to the 17th hole before the Junipers were victorious. John Juniper said “My son Charlie and I started playing in the competition at its inception and from start to finish it has been an amazing

experience. We have meet some very nice people and played at some very nice golf clubs. I have to thank my son Charlie for basically carrying me all the way to the final and we both look forward to defending our cup.” The LWGT Family Knockout competition was launched in August 2013 with pairs from across the UK being split into 4 regions of play. Each family was given three matches to play in order to gain league points where the top four placed teams in each league qualified for the semi-finals day sponsored and hosted by Macdonald Hotels. Manager of the Lee Westwood Golf Tour Stuart Blair said “The Lee Westwood Golf Tour Family Knockout competition provides a great platform for any members of the same family to come together and compete in a fun friendly atmosphere. I refereed the finals and I can say it was a very enjoyable day and a great match played between two lovely families, what more could you wish for in a match play event!” For your chance to be crowned the 2014 Lee Westwood Golf Tour Family Knockout National Champions, visit www.leewestwoodgolftour.com or call 01829 730 753 for details – closing date for entries is the 1st of June 2014.

Lee Porter, the PGA Professional attached to Hylands Golf Complex in Chelmsford, has been voted Clubmaker of the Year by the Golf Clubmakers Association in the UK. Lee now ranks in the top ten custom-fit clubmakers throughout Europe. No wonder he counts 8 touring golf pros as customers, including the ever popular local Pro, Robbie Coles.

FITTING FUNDAMENTAL:

OFFSET ON IRONS As promised last month I am going to discuss another of my key fitting fundamentals – Offset on irons. Less Offset Head Offset irons have been around since the 1960’s with many of today’s most popular irons being designed to have offset or progressive offset (more offset in the longer irons, less in the shorter irons). To define offset is simple, it’s the amount that the leading edge of the face of the golf club is set behind the line of the forward edge of the hosel – known as the datum line. Basically making the face look ‘set back’. This has always been thought to be be a huge benefit to golfers as it would help the player ‘square’ (point at the target) the face at impact. In fact for many golfers offset is simply a visual thing and has nothing to do with performance. Well, think again – here’s why it’s important: Many golfers believe that an iron should be struck cleanly with hardly any interaction between the sole of the club and the turf. Unfortunately, this is completely incorrect. For an iron to be struck correctly a divot (a small clipping of grass) must be taken – but this is the important bit – after the ball. This makes perfect sense really, hitting the ground before the ball would result in a loss of head speed and a poor strike so in reality the divot must always be after the ball. In turn this leads to a far crisper strike and better distance. In order to produce a ‘ball divot’ strike (rather than - 26 -

a divot ball strike - which can get a bit ugly) one of the key fundamentals is that at impact the shaft of the club is leaning forwards at impact – which is where offset comes into play. More Offset Head You have probably been told that a club with a lower centre of gravity (weight towards the sole) will hit the ball higher, but very few people explain why this happens. This is due to the fact that for most golfers the shaft of the golf club actually bends forwards at impact, so any club with a low mass will try to get more forward than a club with higher mass. In turn this will result in more loft which equals a higher flight. A head design with more offset will move the centre of gravity of the club head further back which in itself will launch the ball higher so combine a low mass and a big offset and you get a very high golf shot. Many head designs that have big cavities also have large offset so the two generally go hand in hand. In turn a ball divot strike can be very difficult to achieve, to the point that some of the top coaches in the game are now calling offset, cavity backed irons technique destroyers as the club is working against good technique. This is a really interesting thought which will probably be debated for many years although I think it’s fair to say that each golfer should play the amount of offset that suits their swing. HOLD THE ANGLES, WITHOUT TRYING TO KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN! Having just completed my spring escorted tours, hosted holiday weeks and a whole series of tuition breaks at Penina and Pravets, I would love to be the receiver of a pound for every time I heard one of my guests say,“I didn't keep my head down this statement has to be golfs biggest myths, your head is incapable of holding your body down during the swing. In truth, it is the ability to retain the two key angles during the swing. This is the angle at the hips and the knees.

In Picture 4 clearly I am going to hit the top of the ball, but don't look at my head, look at my hips and knees. You can see they are both much straighter than my start posture. This has caused me to change my measurement.

Picture 1 shows these two angles at set up, Picture 2 at the top of the backswing and

Gearing Up For Thousands of Guests at The Open More than 200,000 fans from across the globe will be getting a taste of top class hospitality at The Open Championship this year. Taking place at Royal Liverpool between July 16 and 20, golf’s oldest Major tournament attracts the sport’s top players and their followers.

The Gallery Restaurant package offers exclusive, elevated views of the 16th fairway, with a Champagne and canapés reception, four course fine dining lunch with specially selected wines, afternoon tea and complimentary Champagne, cakes and snacks throughout the day.

And the huge crowds expected at this year’s events also means a massive operation for the behind-the-scenes team who run The Open Hospitality.

Alternatively, those opting for The 1860 Club package will enjoy a private garden and access to the hospitality village along with a pre-lunch Champagne reception and seated, four course meal followed by afternoon tea.

More than 13 separate food outlets, eight coffee shops, eight ice cream kiosks and a bar geared up for selling more than 150,000 pints of beer – which will be sold straight from a giant tanker – are all part of this year’s offer.

This year the new Champion’s Club has been created, offering a more informal setting to watch the action which has proved extremely popular with the Friday already sold out.

Estimates to date are that around 12,000 portions of fish and chips and 9,000 burgers will be sold during the tournament, with more than 6,000 people opting for a corporate hospitality package.

Fans can also watch some of the world’s best players fine tune their game as they warm up ahead of the Championship, at the final practice day on Wednesday 16 July 2014.

Available this year are The Gallery Restaurant,The 1860 Club and The Champion’s Club, with the opportunity to enjoy hospitality throughout the day and to take in all the sporting action.

JAMES ALLAN FROM CHELMSFORD DELIVERS NEW COURSE RECORD TO HEAD BRABAZON TROPHY QUALIFIERS Chelmsford star James Allan produced a scintillating display of golf and shot a new course-record 67 to win the prestigious Brabazon Trophy Southern Qualifier in impressive fashion at Effingham Golf Club. Allan’s record-breaking performance included seven birdies as the plus-two handicapper finished on four-under-par, two strokes clear of the elite field of 132 of the top up-and-coming amateurs at the historic Surrey venue. The 19-year-old headed a list of 30 players who qualified to contest The Brabazon Trophy – the English Men’s Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship – at Seaton Carew Golf Club from June 25-28 next month, with the event ending in dramatic fashion with eight players competing in a sudden-death play-off for the final seven places. Allan made the perfect start to his round on the

6,800-yard layout with birdies at the first two holes and reached the turn in two-under-par, with a birdie at the short seventh making amends for dropping a shot at the difficult par-four fifth hole. The Essex star looked set to return an even lower score as he added four further birdies on the back nine but bogeys at two of the final three holes meant he was forced to settle for a 67. His score is the lowest at Effingham since the club made significant changes to its course including redesigning its 18th hole, with the previous record of 63 on the old layout set by AC Locke in 1959 and Surrey star Curtis Griffiths in 2009. “The course was in great condition and looked fabulous, with lightning-fast greens providing a real test for the competitors, and it was an outstanding performance by James Allan to mark the event with a course record.”

IMPROVE YOUR

CONTROL Grip your sand wedge or pitching club low, towards the club head. Allowing the grip end of the shaft to rest on your leading hip. This is a great drill to improve your strike and control when chipping and pitching.

Without any backswing, continue the follow through. This movement will allow you to feel your body pivot through impact, allowing your hands to lead the club head slightly at impact. Copying this feeling will improve your contact and give you better control when chipping and pitching. Tiger Woods’ hands leading through impact as his body starts to rotate through.

Essex County News by Ben Crew, Press Officer, Essex Golf Union Email: crew_ben@hotmail.com Tel: 07763 840 823 www.essexgolfunion.org

As most of us are well and truly underway with our golfing seasons it has been another strong period of fixtures for all of our County teams.

Monthly Fixtures & Events Round-Up We start with a fixture from the tail end of April that saw the County team take on Kent at Southern Valley GC. With debuts being given to emerging talents Todd Clements (Braintree GC), Elliott Fullalove (Braintree GC), Billy Deville (Bentley), Bailee Curran (Warley Park) and Jack Dyer (Rochford Hundred) the County team saw a mix of old and young come through a strongly contested match victors by 9 points to 6. Level at 2 ½ points each through the morning pairs the first class attitudes of the County team saw them take 6 ½ from a possible 10 points in the afternoon singles to close out the match, five of the ten matches going up the 18th hole. Our thanks must go to the ever warm and friendly Kent Golf Union for their efforts and hospitality and Southern Valley GC for providing their course for use. Essex County Colts Team had their first league match on Saturday 3rd May vs Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire. With a new triangular format for this year encompassing the three competing counties all playing matches together, spoils for the first victory went to Hertfordshire – narrow winners by 1 ½ points to Essex’s 1 and Bedfordshire’s ½. With a number of the afternoon singles matches going all the way to the final hole, the competition and standards have been set and all remains to be played for in the next match, hosted by Hertfordshire at Welwyn Garden City on Sunday 15th June. The County teams first league match of 2014 was played at South Beds Golf Club against Bedfordshire over the exposed Galley Hill Course on Sunday 11th May.With the wind howling come match day conditions made shot making increasingly difficult but did not stop the County team taking a 3 – 1 lead into the afternoon singles. It was an afternoon of match play drama with early signs boasting well for Essex, up in 4 matches. However as the wind picked up and momentum turned the remaining matches were wide open and the victory either sides to take. Having been five down after five holes, Mitchel Sarling (Rochford Hundred) pulled back to win his match two and one and left the victory resting on debutant Todd Clements shoulders, playing in his first County match and going down the last hole 1 up. A par was all Clements needed, securing the Please turn over

overall win for the County team seven points to five. Following the win in Bedfordshire the County team enjoyed another excellent weekend of competitive golf over the weekend of May 17th and 18th taking part in the Eastern Counties Foursomes championship at Seacroft Golf Club in Skegness. Involving counties playing foursomes all weekend this year’s event saw eight counties compete, the eventual victor a Lincolnshire side who won by 8 points over their nearest rivals. Despite finding the competition fierce over the first day the County team battled back through Sunday and whilst they were unable to mount enough of a charge to be crowned champions, took a lot of positives from the weekend. Plaudits must go to Mark Stones and Todd Clements for their 100% record of four wins out of four on Saturday and finally to County Captain Alex Woodward who holed his tee shot on the par three 4th hole for a hole-in-one and 2&1 win!

by Gordon Taylor

The other day, when I was about to set off for the golf course, my wife asked me to get home in good time so as to assist her with the shopping. There would be heavy things to carry and she wanted to do these errands in early afternoon. When I protested, saying that I would not have finished my round by then, she decreed that I should play only nine holes for once. Even very sound counter-arguments fell on deaf ears and, reluctantly, I promised to do as requested. This time it was especially sad to stop playing nine holes, because it happened to be one of those rare good days, when you play to your handicap. But inspite of that I set off for home. Barely on my way, I was stopped by a lady whose car had a flat tyre.Would I help her distress, as she was unable to change wheels herself. Of course I obliged. In fact I would have assisted, even if the lady had been far less attractive than this particular one. The job done, my hands were very dirty and the lady suggested that I’d drive behind her to her nearby home, where I could give them a proper scrub. While I was doing this, she poured a couple of drinks and put on a record. She appeared to be an excellent dancer and when – quite by accident – our lips met, this caused a sort of

electric shock that propelled us to – eh – the other room of the apartment. Naturally you do not wish me to go into details, so let it suffice that I got into my car a full hour later, filled with remorse and wondering how to proceed. After all I love my wife and this incident was entirely out of bounds. After pondering over the matter, I decided on a full confession, offering my profound apologies and hoping the little woman’s justified anger would blow over eventually. This being a very difficult thing for a man to do, my courage should be appreciated, I think. In fact my wife was livid when I entered the house almost two hours late. I hurried to tell her what had happened, not forgetting to add that never again would I do such a thing, and do you know what her reaction was? “You horrible liar!” she cried “Don’t try to delude me with a cock and a bull story. Why can’t you admit openly that you had played eighteen holes?”

Essex Golfer would like to apologise, in last months article “Mersea Golf Club – A Short History” we credited the writing to Tony Millatt, but in fact the article was written by Gordon Taylor. The article was extracted from “Mersea Island Golf Club” booklet for more information go to www.merseamuseum.org.uk. - 40 -

Tri Golf with Sarah and St Joseph’s The Year 3 pupils at St. Joseph’s have enjoyed learning how to play Tri Golf for a second year. Following some excellent sessions delivered by Sarah Bennett PGA Head Teaching Professional at Three Rivers Golf and Country Club and former Ladies European Tour player. The first series two years ago was so successful that one of the tutors, Miss Gore continued to use Tri Golf for the Year 3 pupils after the 6 initial introductory sessions which were delivered by Sarah. Our Year 3 and Year 5 pupils totalling about 60 children have recently benefitted from further Tri Golf sessions with Sarah who is also the U 18 East region England Lead Coach and Essex Girls County Head Coach. They were given a further opportunity to develop their golf and social skills within the school grounds. All of the pupils have thoroughly enjoyed taking part in their weekly golf sessions and are looking forward to an upcoming Tri Golf tournament at Three Rivers Golf and Country Club in June which will be run by Sarah. “I am delighted that the school has embraced Tri Golf and are seeking the additional benefits it provides to the children, it is particularly satisfying that after school clubs are being offered to all ages with high attendance figures. I will be organising and delivering further follow on sessions at the Three Rivers Golf Club providing the children the complete golf experience in a new

and exciting environment, progressing to the golf course. There is now a “pyramid” of development from the introduction of golf at Grass Roots level right through to the Elite players. I am grateful for the Golf Foundation for providing the opportunity which is only available to Golf Mark Clubs, who have attained certain standards. The partnership built with William De Ferrers school and Katherine Jaggard from the schools partnership are invaluable. It is this working relationship that assists with my role adding to the success and growth of the game within the area and one I could not do without.” The success of Tri Golf has not been limited to just Year 3. Miss Gore has organised and delivered two extremely popular Tri Golf after school clubs over the last year, with many pupils from across KS2 participating in Tri Golf activities each week. She has also given a demonstration of Tri Golf to our younger pupils at KS1 Multi Sports Club which was again hugely popular with all pupils fully engaged and eager to learn new skills. Sarah even managed to involve the tutors in the session much to the delight of the children. If you would like to receive any further information about Sarah’s Saturday follow on groups or junior starter groups please contact SarahBennettGolf@gmail.com M: 07719 617 349 www.SarahBennettGolf.co.uk

Pisa Cup

THE BURSTEAD GOLF • CLUB

Clacton-on-Sea GC Captain Tony Stevens welcomed Maldon Golf Clubs Captain Peter Hawkins and his team to the Clacton club for the home leg of the annual “Pisa Cup” match. To the knowledge of senior members Ted Hurst and Ted Locke, the Clacton and Maldon Clubs started playing friendly matches in the early 1960s, and the Pisa Cup was presented in 1982 by M Gurry Esq.. It is called the Pisa Cup because it was dropped when first presented, and it leans to one side, Hence “The Pisa Cup.” The day started with a full English breakfast and the traditional banter over who was playing who.The Captains were first on tee, dressed in waterproofs against the weather. However, the rain soon stopped, and some very good golf was played by both teams. The Clacton team of Captain Tony Stevens, Vice-Captain Steve Parks, Paul Millard, Paul Atkinson, Martin Suen, John Herbert, Alan Hearn, Danny Thomas, Tom Heffer, Danny Clark, Matt Heffer, Paul Pidgeon, Kevin Turnbull, Mark Chamberlain, Dave Gilbert, John Willson, Ray Beyerman, Derek Woodrow, Laurie Fraugia and Ray Fage finished the match play Hambro match, 29 up, but Clacton must now travel to Maldon on 14th June and playing Hambro anything can happen!

Why Do We Play Golf!

We would all like to improve our scores at Golf, and it is easy to get caught up in how many points we scored, what our handicap is, etc. but sometimes it is good to take a step back and remember why we play golf. Golf has a number of benefits that we as golfers can easily forget about. Here are five reasons to play golf. 1. Great Exercise If you are carrying your bag, a round of Golf can burn up to 1800 calories and around 1500 calories if you're using a trolley, quite possibly 1200 calories using a buggy, which is a considerable amount of your daily allowance. You will walk about four miles playing a round of golf. 2.You will meet new people Which develops friendships. Enjoy the social aspect of golf, which may include playing golf with your best friends. 3. Combats Stress With modern life putting quite a lot of stress on people, golf will help you turn off from stress related problems which happen in your every day life. 4. Golf helps you live Longer A study by the Karolinska Institute in Sweden found that people who play golf will live five years longer. The study was based on data from 300,000 Swedish golfers. This was found to be true regardless of age, sex, or social group. It showed, low handicaps live longer which is good motivation to practice. 5. Golf is good for business Many business deals and relationships are developed on the golf course. People who play golf are involed in different professions giving you a great opportunity for networking.

TENERIFE’S INVITATION TO ‘GOLF COOL’ THIS SUMMER Golfers are being invited to ‘Golf Cool’ this summer, playing in the perfect climate on the holiday island of Tenerife.

to about 25°C, with virtually no rain and an average of more than nine hours of sunshine per day – an ideal combination for any golf break.

With consistent warm winters and nine varied courses to choose from, Tenerife is already wellrecognised as a destination that provides exceptional conditions for golf holidays between the months of November and March.

In addition, the golf courses on Tenerife are generally much quieter in the summer months, giving visitors the opportunity to schedule teetimes to their own personal requirements and providing an uncrowded millionaire’s golfing feel on-course.

However, the Tenerife Tourism Corporation is adamant that the cool way to travel and play golf this summer is to head to Tenerife and to take advantage of a range of conditions that other southern European destinations struggle to provide. The ‘Golf Cool’ invitation is based around four key factors; better value green fees, ideal golfing temperatures, quieter golf courses and longer days, which facilitate plenty of time to hit the pool or beach.

Tenerife is blessed with more than 70km of beaches and a wide range of cultural highlights and activities both on and off the water. With longer daylight hours, golfers visiting in summer will have ample opportunity to indulge their favourite pastime and also immerse themselves in the spirit of Tenerife, whether sightseeing or sipping a cocktail from their sun-lounger.

In value terms, green fees between April and October are approximately 25 per cent cheaper than in the winter months; and, with hotel rates also significantly reduced in many periods, it all combines to provide a great value golf holiday.

Tenerife features nine different and varied layouts: Buenavista in the west; Real Club de Golf de Tenerife in the north; and Golf Costa Adeje, Abama, Las Americas, Golf del Sur, Amarilla, and Los Palos in the south. Tecina Golf is a 40-minute ferry ride from the mainland on the beautiful island of La Gomera.

While other popular Mediterranean golfing spots will be hosting a sweaty sea of golfers in stifling conditions this summer,Tenerife is able to provide the perfect antidote as cooling trade winds keep average temperatures across the summer period

To ‘Golf Cool’ this summer visit www.webtenerife.com/golf; www.facebook.com/TenerifeGolf; or @TwiTenerifeGolf. There is also a new Tenerife Golf app available to download free.

CREATING THE

SHOULDER TURN

You have probably read a lot of articles about turning your shoulders 90degrees in the backswing to create power. But are you flexible enough to do this? Our bodies are amazing and if you try to increase the length of your backswing without flexibility, you will accomplish this somehow. Maybe by bending your left arm in the backswing, lifting your left foot, swaying away from your centre point. Any of these moves in my opinion compromises the efficiency of the swing.

TEST your flexibility. Whilst kneeling, can you turn your upper body 70 degrees with or without help? If not, with both hands hold the right side of your chair and gently persuade your upper body to twist to the right every time you sit down to dinner. Don’t force it, just hold for 10 secs and relax for 10 secs. Perform this twist 10 times through out dinner each time your muscles will relax and so will the atmosphere!

EXCERISE. In a kneeling position, allow your head and eyes to follow your leading arm as you swing them freely in a continuous motion around yourself for one minute. Try to maintain your arms at shoulder height. WATCH OUT If you don’t have the required flexibility, accept a shorter backswing and look out for the problems highlighted above. Encourage your wrists to hinge and your left arm to remain long. - 52 -

Club Captains show support for OCF

Societies welcome (Monday - Friday)

OCF couldn’t exist without the generous support of Captains from golf clubs all over the UK. We recently received cheques totally over £10,000; Brian Munro, Captain of Canons Brook Golf Club raised over £6,000 for OCF during his captaincy, while Phil Wilson (Lt Col retired) raised over £5500 for OCF during his tenure as Captain at Ross on Wye Golf Club. The money raised will be used to cover the costs of two three-day golf skills and employment training events, as a result over 50 individuals will receive expert tuition, lessons on the rules and etiquette of the game and will experience what it’s like to work in the golf industry. - 53 -

We approached the end of our season with a tremendous event at Toot Hill Golf Club who hosted for the 94th Essex PGA Open Championship sponsored by Curran IT. Toot Hill was in the most glorious of conditions and so many compliments were made regarding the presentation of this fine course. If you haven't played Toot Hill recently, it is most certainly worth a visit – it is quite simply superb.

Essex golf day aims to grow the game Essex golfers are being asked to support a fund-raising golf day to help grow the game in the county. The stableford event, for teams of four, will take place at the Garon Park golf complex at Southend on Friday, 5 September 2014. It will raise funds for the Essex Golf Partnership which supports clubs in the county and encourages new and returning golfers.

Helen Tarttelin, the County Development Officer, said: “If we had more funding we could do even more to recruit and retain golf club members and provide easy access opportunities for new adult golfers to take up the game. “So we’re appealing to local golfers to support our golf day and help us to grow the game in Essex. If it’s a success then everyone wins!” The 18-hole competition is for teams of four of men and ladies, playing in any combination. It will be played off full handicap and the best three scores will

Turner Cup Win For Maureen And Ian It was another good Bank Holiday weekend of golf at Colchester GC. On Bank Holiday Monday, the Turner Cup was held where the sole requirement for the pairings for this foursome's competition is that they have to be married or a blood relation.

committee it provides an opportunity for new members to informally mix with more established elements of the club. In teams of three with the best two score counting Acland Madge playing alongside Nigel Morrison and John Guest were the winners on the day beating Dave Blackmore John Windsor and Richard Gallant, both teams returning 80 points. In third place was the ladies team headed by the Club’s Manager/Secretary Julie Ruscoe along with Alison Clare and Cathy Burchell, they had the grand total of 70 points. New members are the lifeblood of any club and to this end, the Club is holding an Open Day on Saturday 24th May where the Club will open its doors, and all are welcome. Guests will be able to meet the Clubs PGA registered professional team headed by Mark Angel, enjoy a free lesson using the Club’s extensive practice facilities and possibly play a few holes. A light lunch will be provided. More details are available from the club or the Clubs website www.colchestergolfclub.com.

Medal Winners It was the husband and wife paring of Maureen and Ian Devenish, who came out the winners with a score of 39 points. With handicaps of 18 and 15 respectively it required good steady golf to beat some keenly handicapped competition. A near ace on the fourth hole helped their score, reportedly the drive was two inches from the hole, with the subsequent putt being rattled in by Maureen Devenish. Chasing them hard were two couples on 38 points. Getting the edge after a countback was the mother and son pairing of Sally-Ann (21) and James Angel (5). The Angels had been out in the second group of the day and were the leaders in the clubhouse until the Devenish pairing finished in the last group of the day, and with some 60 couples taking part, it was a long wait. New Members Day held last Saturday also produced some interesting golf. Restricted to members who have joined in the previous twelve months and playing with a member of the club’s

Philippa Deman and Alison Cordran were the winners of the Ladies’ Centenary Medals last week at Colchester Golf Club. Deman playing off a handicap of six won the scratch medal with a round of 84, which was the lowest gross of the day. She was just one shot better than Mandy Rix (6) who returned an 85. Deman’s first half was the key. She had just the one double bogey which with three bogies saw her turn two shots clear of Rix and although her back nine was not as strong as Rix’s her pars on the 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th allowed her to stay one shot clear to claim the Scratch Medal. The handicap prize went to Alison Cordran. Her winning score was 74 nett and her top spot was secured by the narrowest of margins, as she was one of three on this score. Countback was the decider with Cordran (26) getting the nod over Janet Austin (26) both having a gross score of 100. The third player sharing this nett score was Renate Clarke (27) with her gross of 101.

A BALA NC IN G

ACT

Balance is a word used in the golfing exercise world a lot! Are all golfers working on their balance to improve their swing? Majority are NOT! This really surprises me as balance and having full control over it is vital in performing a good solid swing. Working on your balance overall really means working on your stabilisers, your stabilisers being the tiny little muscles throughout the body that stabilise the body and provide a foundational base to build strength upon. More commonly than not I see people skip the stabilisers and work straight on the global muscles (the bigger muscles), this in turn produces visually a strong able body but in time injuries will occur and your game will suffer. So how can you start working your balance/stabilisers? I would recommend buying a Swiss ball and start the following exercise;

Swiss ball balance work – begin with a 4Point balance ... place the hands on the ball, place the knees on the ball then lift the feet so you are on all 4's on top of the ball ... work on relaxing the back and pulling the belly button to the spine. This can progress to coming up onto your knees and hardest of all lifting I arm out, 1 leg out. If you are unsure on how to perform this exercise seek a professional at the gym to help you out. This exercise not only improves balance and stability but all serves as a fantastic warm up for golf as it wakes up all of the core musculature and switches it on and also physically warms the muscles! If this exercise is too hard try sitting of the ball, in good posture, so sit up nice and tall and gently lift 1 leg 2 inches off the floor, pulling in the belly button at all times and swapping over. Have a go and hopefully you will start seeing improvements very quickly.

Sky Sports News Club Golf Survey Reveals Slow Play Main Concern Slow play and declining memberships are the main causes of concern among golf clubs in the UK, according to a Sky Sports News survey. Over 250 British clubs took part in the poll, which revealed that slow play was the biggest talking point in the 19th hole. An overwhelming 94% of clubs admitted that the average round is taking too much time, while 91% insist the problem could be eased if golf's governing bodies took firmer action against professionals guilty of slow play.

“A lot of the juniors who are watching golf are picking up bad habits after seeing us taking our time. It’s down to the intricacies of the rules or people not being ready when it's their turn ... it’s a reasonably big problem in the game.” Luke Donald

has also taken an alarming dive despite 76% of clubs having a youth scheme in place. Female membership has been hit even harder, with 75% of the survey's 254 respondents reporting a drop. Despite the declining numbers, 52% of clubs believe they are getting enough assistance from golf’s ruling bodies, although non-major tournaments appear to have little impact on club business. The Open Championship (21%) and the Masters (29%) are known to have a “significant” effect on revenue, but regular European Tour events staged in the UK rarely boost club coffers. The other main cost to British golf clubs is, of course, the weather. Adverse conditions have cost 37% of clubs more the 31 days of business over the last three years, although 22% have lost less than a fortnight.

Five-hour rounds are common on the European and PGA Tours these days, and club golfers believe heavier and more frequent punishment for the pros would speed up the pace of play around the local municipals. After a year in which a ban on anchored putting was agreed by the R&A and the PGA Tour, only 8% of clubs said this was a bigger cause of concern than slow play.

Another worrying trend is the decline in club membership, with 70% of clubs reporting that subscriptions have decreased over the last five years. Only 1% said their dominant membership group was in the 31-40 bracket, and youth membership

As part of the Sport Relief activities this year, two Essex club members, Simon Cheney from Saffron Walden GC and Phil Redhead from The Notleys Golf Club, held a BT-led Golf Day as a less strenuous fundraising option at the formers home club. Beautifully hosted at the Saffron Walden Golf Club (www.swgcgolf.co.uk), which even laid on some excellent weather and fine fayre, thirty golfers from a variety of backgrounds and societies came together to raise over £330 for Sport Relief – contributing to the £53.3M of charitable donations in 2014. Phil & Simon wishes to thank a number of groups who participated in the event – not just British Telecommunications staff, but the Seniors Touring Amateur Golf Society (STAGS – www.stagsgolf.org.uk), the BT Research Golf Society (www.btrgs.org.uk), members of Notleys Golf Club, led by their Captain Chris Jordan, and the generous members and staff of Saffron Walden GC who also dug deep and put their hands in their pockets!
