The 22-year-old from Chelmsford in Essex held off the challenge of two Curtis Cup players and proven champions to take the title by a shot. “I’m still shaking,” she said after claiming the trophy. “If you had told me at the beginning of the week that I would win I would never have believed you. It feels really good and it means I can start believing in myself, especially as so many good players were involved.” Blackman finished on eight-under par, helped by a crucial birdie two on the 17th where she holed out from 30ft. It edged her ahead of her challengers and after a solid par on the last the title was hers. The runners-up were the Curtis Cup players Sophie Lamb (Clitheroe) and Annabell Fuller (Roehampton), who finished on seven under. Nicola Slater (Lindrick), the English women’ matchplay champion, and Emily Toy (Carlyon Bay), a star of the university circuit, tied fourth on six under.

ormally at this time of year there is not allot to look forward to in terms of TV golf but there is still the Fed X cup in America and of course the Ryder cup at Paris National. It should be a great event with so many top players likely to be representing both teams.
S E L E C T O R
The course itself is wonderful but very tough for the average golfer. I dare say these top players will be getting birdies everywhere!

ROCHFORD HUNDRED GOLF CLUB CELEBRATES 125 YEARS 018 is a special year for Rochford Hundred as it celebrates 125 years since its inauguration 2 in 1893. Back then the club was originally known as Southend golf club, playing on a 9 hole course in Southchurch. They were then invited by local landowner James Tabor to construct an 18 hole course at the present location. The course was later redesigned by James Braid, a champion golfer who was recognised as one of the world’s leading golf course architects. This year, the club has marked the anniversary with a number of special events, the climax of which was a week of golf for members, friends, family and guests held from 13th – 18th August. On the Monday saw 44 men tool part in a Roll up event where teams of 4 were drawn, and the winners of which were Paul Kirkland, Kevin Salmon, Ray Walsingham and Mike Smith. On Tuesday, the ladies held their Summer meeting. A full field of 44 played a 27 hole greensome stableford which was won by past captain Elaine Tucker and current vice captain Hazel Jameison with 54 points. The main qualifying competition of the week was held on Wednesday with a 125 special stableford, which was open to all male members and cadets. The lucky winner here was David Goff with 42 points playing off a handicap of 10. He was presented with a superb chess set, the board for this had been hand crafted by a Rochford member, Kerry Davis. The remaining events were open to all members and their guests, beginning on the Thursday with a mixed greensome which was played in very wet conditions and won by Johnathan Jude and Liz Wilhelmy on 35 points.
Friday saw an AM/AM competition where the best two scores from teams of four were counted. The winners here were Tony Seaton, Mark Taylor, Craig Shorney and Keith Ballinger. The week culminated in a Texas scramble held on Saturday afternoon, followed by a barbecue and presentation. 92 players participated and the first place went to Richard Leigh, Keith Edgson, David Beale and Andrew Lazer. Nearest the pin prizes were awarded to Andy Tyler (7th ), Mark Lonergan (11th) and Jack Archibald (15th).
David Goff - 125 Stableford Winner.
Winners of all events were presented with specially produced commemorative merchandise and crystal. It was a memorable week enjoyed by all, and grateful thanks go to all of the staff and members who contributed to the organisation of it, in particular Jo Rumsey and Roger Newell. - 12 -

we turn our body through the shot this speed causes an outward pulling effect and our arms and club are pulled into a straight line at impact. Because of this effect we set up to the ball with our arms held away from the body. You can see this here in Picture 1. However in a short shot like a pitch we are not trying to create any speed as the ball is not going to travel that far. Now we can use the big muscles of the torso to control the club. These are ideal in the short game because they are slow and with a limited range of motion. In Picture 2 you can clearly see the difference in set up for a pitch shot, my arms are now much closer to my body and my upper arms

are held against my chest. They are now connected and should never leave this positon throughout the entire pitch swing. To really get the feeling of this connection place a towel under your arms and practice hitting short shots holding it in place as I am in the Picture sequence 3, 4 and 5. Stay connected and become a more consistent pitcher of the ball. If you would like to join me on my residential tuition holidays at Penina in Portugal next spring the dates are now on my web site www.garypikegolf.com they are limited to eleven golfers to ensure plenty of my time with everyone. UFFORD PARK 2018 CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND WINNERS SHINE THROUGH THE RAIN ain didn’t dampen the spirits of those taking place in the Ufford Park Golf Club R Championship Weekend 2018, which took place on the 29 July 2018, and was the first weekend in nearly two months that the course has had any rain. This year the Championship was won by James Keeble; this was his first Club Championship with a pair of 79’s on what proved to be an incredibly tough day for scoring, due to the weather which saw torrential rain at times with heavy crosswinds. James has been playing golf at Ufford Park since he was a Junior golfer, and dedicated his victory to the recent birth of his baby daughter, Bella, who was born on 22 May 2018. Luke Cleland finished in second place with just the 1 shot off the mark.
Jonathan Law won the Nett “Aldous Trophy” award for the second time in 3 years, with a combined score of 145. The 18-hole Handicap Cup prize was won by Mervyn Ruffles with a Nett 70. Sue Meecham, the 2018 Ladies Captain won her first ever Ladies Championship; on count back, pipping 4time Ladies Champion Pam Burgess to the prize.

WHY, WHAT OR HOW – WHAT COMES FIRST ll of us are working on something in our games and aiming to improve and trying to A have better control of the ball and hit more good shots and less bad ones. There is countless information out there and ideas out there to show you what or how to hit the ball better so much so that it can be very confusing for many golfers. But when we hear the latest idea many golfers just try it and don't stop to ask the key question of why? Why will this help me control the ball better or improve my game. The aim of the game is to control the ball and to do that you
need to create a repeatable impact. So if you are implementing an idea into your swing a key question to answer is why will this improve my impact? If you are struggling with direction and you want to improve it you first need to know why does it go left, right or straight and then you can develop the how or what to do to correct it. With direction, the clubface has the most influence on direction so that is highly likely to be the why and then you can go from there. If you can understand the why the how and the what will become evident and you will be clearer on what you need to do to get the most out of you game. Matt is Hosting a 5 star golf experience to Marrakech, Morocco in November from the 8th November till 13th. It will included staying a at 5* Kenzi Menara Palace Hotel, be hosted by a PGA professional with coaching sessions both on and off the course and a city tour of Marrakech. VICTORIOUS VASS TRIUMPHS AT THE HOME OF GOLF ongratulations to Five Lakes Junior member, Tom Vass, who won the C Murray Mitchell Trophy at St Andrews last week. Tom, who is just 14 years of age and also a member of the respective County team, made the long trip to the Home of Golf for the St Andrews Junior Open. After a tough start to the Monday’s qualifying round on the Eden course, Tom managed to birdie 2 of the last 4 holes for a 77, just missing out on the scratch qualification by just 2 shots. However, a nett 72 was good enough to qualify for the last 16 of the Murray Mitchell Trophy. With wins against Hugh Myers (Bourne Golf Club) and George Ash (Hallows Golf Club) on Tuesday, saw Tom into the Semi Finals on Wednesday, being played on the Old Course. 22 holes was needed to overcome Kyle Murphy (Clydebank Golf Club) and onto the final. Despite being behind early on against Calum Draper (Dunblane New Golf Club) Tom fought back winning 4 holes in quick succession leaving him with a 3 up advantage standing on the 16th tee. Despite losing the 16th, Tom held his nerve to win the treacherous 17th hole, giving him a 3&1 victory. The most notable winner of this event is European Ryder Cup player, Matthew Fitzpatrick, taking home the trophy in 2008.

EVOLUTION EVOLUTIO EVOLUTI EVOLUT EVOLU EVOL EVO EV
OR
R REV REVO REVOL REVOLU REVOLUT REVOLUTI REVOLUTIO REVOLUTION Use The Two Year Rule. ’m a great believer that there are two types of companies. Firstly, you have the companies Ithatgolf believe in evolution. This type of company will generally bring out product at a slower rate than other companies and rather than trying to reinvent the wheel on a yearly basis they simply ‘tweak’ designs. I like this style of company, they never rubbish their previous offerings and also never ‘dump’ stock a month or so after the new model arrives upsetting those who had already bought the previous model. Unfortunately, this style of company are few and far between in the industry and are overpowered by the companies looking to change the world … those looking for revolution. This is a company who endlessly releases product, stating how much better this model is compared to the previous model. I suppose this is a fact of life, let’s face it many of us will change our phones religiously to the latest model, even though there was nothing wrong with our old phone. I also accept that there are some people who just like to have new and shiny clubs – nothing wrong in that as long as they accept they will probably
make little difference to your game. Revolution golf companies release technology that ‘has never been been done before’ … unfortunately I have been in golf long enough to know that although there may be the odd new thing most of it has been done before – it never worked then so I doubt the outcome will be much different now. Thinking about the articles I have written for Essex Golfer over the years I think it would be easy to get the impression that I am negative about the golf industry. Honestly, I’m not … I just get frustrated that golfers spend thousands of pounds of hard earned cash and they don’t get any better – with good solid advice golf would be so much more fun. So, I would encourage you to adopt my two year rule. It’s simple, if a company releases a product that is so ground breaking that every golfer MUST use it just wait to see if the technology is in the next model … if it’s not then there are only two reasons, it never sold or it proved to be useless. You could argue here that the company has moved onto the next ‘new’ thing, but believe me if it sells it stays.

different. On Sunday 19th August, over 75 golfers gathered in the morning to take part in the 36 hole competition. It was a hotly contested competition, and following the morning 18, Kevin Royan lead the way at +3, with Steve Pettitt and Paul Beckwith close behind on +4. However, building on his incredible morning performance, it was Paul Beckwith who took the afternoon by storm recording an incredible afternoon round of 71! Therefore, despite some fantastic golf across the whole day we are pleased to announce that our 2018 Club Champion was Paul Beckwith who finished the day with an amazing score of 146. Massive congratulations to

She has previously coached at The Open at Royal St Georges and two years ago at Woburn Golf Club at the same Event. “It is an incredibly busy week but with so many spectators all at various stages of their golfing journeys makes for a very special 15 minutes. It is a case of a swift diagnosis with relevant questioning during the sessions, complete with a drill the golfer can take away. All three bays were fully booked for the duration of the week so within my allocated 4 hour coaching duration, 16 golfers were treated to a free lesson by myself in one of the inflatable nets.

O
n the 4th August Forrester Park Golf Club held the annual competition between the Men, Ladies,Veterans and the Juniors. Teams from each section played for the Sadler Shield, the aggregate Stapleford score deciding the winners. Due to the very hot weather conditions the competition was reduced to 12 holes, but some excellent golf was played throughout the day. None better then the Juniors who run out the winners beating the ladies by 3 points. The Junior captain, Cameron Chaplin was delighted to receive the shield from Jim Sadler, the sponsor of the competition.

RESTING ON YOUR LAURELS
ith an amazing summer nearing its end, all the golfing Majors out of the way and, W of course, The Ryder Cup to look forward to, here at The Mind Zone we’ve been reflecting on performances, successes and improvements of golfers who have spent time with us this year so far. We’ve had team victories, both mens and ladies teams, individual success, Club Champions in Essex and Suffolk, medals, cup wins and handicap reductions - so a good year, it must be said! So what do we offer at The Mind Zone? Whether you are a seasoned golfer, a beginner to the game or just want better results, regardless of your current handicap or age, here at The Mind Zone we can help you. We will help you with your thought process, before the game, during and of course after the game to give you the best possible chance of a great round! Yes, you will have to apply the tips and techniques, and please make good use of your PGA Teaching Professional, to assist with the technical side of your game, but however you currently swing the clubs, our results have meant on average, 3 or 4 or 5 shots per round can easily be saved… Quite literally that can be the difference between being in the running, being close to winning, being in the ‘buffer zone’ to ACTUALLY winning! How good would that be? Speaking with one victorious Mind Zoner
?
recently they said ‘It’s amazing how months after my Mind Zone experience the ideas from it are still being used in my game, gradually improving my consistency and I have enjoyed my best season ever and my most enjoyable’. Another, who this year recorded their first ever club competition victory, has told us ‘I knew I was playing well, yet I just followed the advice you gave me, and looking back, the last four holes were the best I could have hoped for. Most times when I’m playing well and realise I could win, I put pressure on myself and have a bad finish, not this time!’ Even with success in many areas, we at The Mind Zone always want to improve our courses and knowledge with a view to improving ‘your’ golf and enjoyment of the game. We’ve spent a lot of this summer on the course, with golfers of every age and ability, improving their game, so why not yours? We are finalising details of both an open Mind Zone evening session and a Mind Zone Masterclass, both to be held over the next few months. Spaces will be limited, so do book early and for more information drop us a line, check out our website www.themind-zone.com or follow us on social media. Enjoy the Ryder Cup and of course, enjoy your own golf! Gary Boyes & David Tingey

MARKS THE SPOT
he most common requirement I hear from my clients is their goal “To increase their overall T distance”
The days are long gone I am afraid of attempting to add overall distance purely by swinging the club as hard and fast as you can.
Someone told me when I was growing up “All this means is the ball will end of in the trees more quickly!” The blend of timing, tempo, rhythm and balance as Jim Hardy advocates are four key areas to look for when building an efficient swing. These attributes are very clear to see in particular when watching the recent Ricoh Women’s British Open which was a fantastic spectacle for the Women’s game. So, let’s try to improve our distance purely by working on achieving a consistent strike pattern on the clubface. One area of my coaching includes clubface awareness within the swing which ties in with the centre strike. However, understanding where we strike the ball on the clubface and how to improve this with our Coach will certainly improve distance and ball flight consistency. Here is a valuable training aid which I use to determine where the ball strikes the clubface, clearly demonstrating the before and after changes.

AUTUMN CUP VICTORY CAPS AN OUTSTANDING YEAR FOR SAFFRON WALDEN’S PROMISING JUNIOR ALEX hat a fantastic year 2018 has been for 12 year old Alex Sparrow of Saffron Walden W Golf Club as she edges ever closer to her dream of playing in the Solheim Cup and being part of Team GB in the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Alex started the year with a handicap of 21, and has already dropped to 9.5; this means she can look forward to competing in regional and national junior girls’ tournaments in 2019. Thanks to the support of Saffron Walden Golf Club and her mentor Justine Voss, Alex has gained invaluable match experience, playing in the ladies team in the Cambs and Hunts Jean Wilkinson Trophy and progressing to the scratch team. Selected to play for the County junior girls, she became the highest points scorer, winning 3 out of her 4 matches. In Club junior competitions, Alex has carried off the Sellers Putter, the Betty Pedler Cup, the Easter Trophy and, in the Junior Championship, the nett prize. In the last week Alex entered the
toughest endurance ladies competition at the Club, the Autumn Cup, competing in 36 holes of medal play in a day. Her second round nett 71 was too good for the rest of the field, and lead to her handicap being cut by 2 strokes. Competing in the Cambs and Hunts Junior Championships, Alex won the Girls nett trophy. Alex’s dedication to golf is only possible because of the support of her teachers and friends at Saffron Walden County High. During term time Alex dedicates her weekends to training and playing golf, and finds time after school to practice and play friendly golf. Her determination to succeed leads her to ensure that, if a golf competition means she misses school, she has covered her work in advance. Watch out for Saffron Walden Golf Club’s rising star in the future.

RETURN OF THE MATT AT SOUTH ESSEX
B
rentwood, Essex, UK – one of Essex golf ’s most popular figures, Matt Stables, has returned to South Essex Golf Centre as Golf Development Professional with a positive message to all golfers – and a promise to improve their game. The experienced golf pro, who is an Advanced PGA Professional, has returned this summer after six years away from the club to develop a brand-new series of activities aimed at growing the game, and attracting golfers of all ages to the 27-hole golf complex. And if your golf game is getting you down, Stables has this for you: “I’ll help you shoot four shots lower in the next 12 months” he promises, as he heads into the summer with new initiatives already established such as a Practice Club where both members and visiting golfers mingle with the common goal of shooting lower scores. He has also started new Junior Classes at the weekends starting with Tiny Tots from four years of age, and is also hosting new coaching programmes for female golfers and seniors at South Essex. To back up his new coaching plans, one of Stables’ first acts on his return to South Essex was to dramatically improve the Driving Range at the golf centre. His range-refurbishment programme has already seen the introduction of all-new golf balls, hitting mats and lighting to the golf centre’s covered 14-bay range, with new range targets and
fairway shaping on the outfield. Stables’ methods have made seismic changes to people’s golfing skills. “There’s no limit to how well you can play this game” he said. “I have a pupil who cut a massive 32 shots off his golf game this year! I just gave him a personalised plan of action, and it really paid off. “If you want it badly enough, I can get you there.” “Playing golf is an intense emotional experience, and you feel truly alive out there on the course. That’s why we all love it so much. I’m back at South Essex to channel that passion and energy, into better performance. My goal here is to help you enjoy your golf more than ever!” Contact Matt at 01277 811289 or email southessex-gdp@crown-golf.co.uk. See www.southessexgolf.co.uk for all information about the golf centre, and to book your next visit.

he penultimate event of the season took place at The Rayleigh Club in early August. After T all the recent hot and sunny weather it was disappointing to have much cooler temperatures, grey skies and drizzly rain on the morning. The forecast for the day was poor and with the ladies teeing off from 12 noon the rain got worse as the day went on. After all the organisation it is always disappointing when the weather tries to thwart the proceedings. Whilst a lot of the ladies came in drenched after 9 holes, others soldiered on in difficult conditions and should be commended for their fortitude. Consequently the scores reflected the poor weather conditions on the day. In 4th place with 31 points ocb were Tricia Ainsbury (Burstead) & Jeanette Oakes (Romford), 3rd also on 31 points were Caroline Fields (Braintree) & Carol Bell (Benton Hall).
2nd ocb with 33points were Sandra Griggs (Maylands) and Monique Praill (West Essex). In 1st place and winners of the Friendship Salver also on 33points were Pennie Lipscomb (The Warren) & Pat Drew (The Burstead). The day finished with a delicious carvery meal which was much appreciated and enjoyed by the ladies. Thanks to The Rayleigh Club for hosting the event and to Joanna Kurn (Lady Captain The Rayleigh Club) and Pat Flynn for their help with preparations and on the day. Despite the weather a good day was had by all.
IDA BUNTING MEMORIAL TROPHY he first round matches of the Ida Bunting Memorial Trophy competition started in April T and reached the semi final and final stages in August. On an extremely hot day the semi-finals teed off at Burstead Golf Club at 12 noon. The first match was Linda Woods (Royal Epping) versus Lee Stavri (West Essex). Lee received 5 shots and was 3 up after 7 holes, Linda fought back & was 2 down at the turn but Lee then played well to close out the match on the 14th winning 5 & 4. The second match was Janice Hamilton (The Warren) versus Carole Robinson (Gosfield Lake). Carole received 5 shots - a very closely fought match with the players all square after 17 holes. The end result was a win for Carole on the 18th hole 1 up. The final between Lee Stavri (West Essex) and Carole Robinson (Gosfield Lake) took place at Colchester Golf Club. Carole received 9 shots. Lee got off to a good start and was 2 up after 2 holes. Carole then got going and gradually clawed back and they were all square after 7 holes. After a few halved holes and a win for each player they were all square after 12. Lee then won the next 2
holes and the 15th was halved. Next came the par 3 16th which Lee managed to win to close out the match 3 & 2. Both players hit some great shots during the match but both struggled to get the measure of the greens at times. The match was played in the true spirit of golf and was watched by members of the Society’s Committee and supporters from Gosfield Lake. Thanks to The Burstead & Colchester Golf Club for hosting these matches and looking after us so well and to Lynne Kirkham for her services as Referee. Jan Collier (President of the Society) presented the runner up and winners prizes and mementos and the Ida Bunting Memorial Trophy to Lee. On behalf of herself and Carole, Lee thanked the Committee for running such a great and well organised competition which they had both really enjoyed playing in.

So far 2018 has probably been the most difficult in living memory for many greenkeepers with mother nature throwing plenty of obstacles in the way, winter started off very wet and mild in December and January resulting in ground conditions that restricted the use of some machinery on the golf course, by the end of February we are usually starting to see the first signs of growth as Growth Degree Days pick up however not this year when the ‘Beast from the East’ rolled in. Essex was one of the worst affected counties in the UK with temperatures reaching -12°c and a foot of snow in places, the Essex Weather Centre tweeted that some areas remained below freezing for 96 hours continuously. This meant a deep frost had penetrated into the ground knocking back soil temperatures. Not long after the thaw in mid march when lots of golf courses where in the middle of spring renovations we had Storm Emma and further snow this time had a negative effect on any overseeding that had taken place (Greenkeepers like to have renovations completed prior to the start of the golf season for many on April 1st). Through April and May there was plenty of variations in temperatures with the last grass frost not until the 18th May. Late May witnessed the first signs of the extended heatwave and drought spell this summer which has had a massive effect on the quality of playing surfaces at golf courses. If your golf club has a good irrigation system then there is something a course manager can do to combat drought stress – sadly
many don’t as good modern automated irrigation systems are very expensive. When we look at the abiotic stress caused by extreme heat however there is nothing any greenkeeper can do with heat stress across the whole golf course, hand watering/syringing of greens helps keep the most important areas in good condition but fairways, tees, around bunkers and heavy traffic areas have suffered heavy desiccation which will require extensive over seeding programmes to get grass coverage back this autumn. As I type this article just prior to the Essex Greenkeepers Golf Day at Boyce Hill we have had 26 days this summer where temperatures have risen above 30°c and 64 out of 83 days since June 1st where the maximum temperature has been above 25°c, Annual Meadow Grass (Poa annua) with its shallow rooting characteristics will not survive in those conditions. Some recent rainfall has given some respite and recovery but worn bare areas are going to need a good amount of spiking and seeding otherwise these bare areas will quickly become populated with weeds and look untidy. Extreme weather events are now becoming more common and whilst winter will still remain cold at times and summer hot it’s the variations of weather events within seasons which makes planning essential work very difficult and finding the correct window to apply fertilisers, plant protection products or wetting agents extremely challenging. Greenkeepers don’t control mother nature and therefore course conditions are dictated by what she gives us and 2018 has been very difficult. If you would like to know more about the work of greenkeeping teams around Essex you can follow us on twitter @essexbigga.

ESSEX PGA DONATES TO ROB GEORGE FOUNDATION he Essex Professional Golfers Association has recently made it’s donation to the Captain’s T charity for 2017. Chris Cutchie, Professional at Colchester Golf Club and Captain in 2017, chose the Rob George Foundation as his charity for the year. Rob George was a talented sportsman. He excelled at golf, hockey and cricket. At the time of his last illness he had just broken into the Colchester & East Essex 1st XI and had been elected a full playing member of the MCC. But Rob’s sporting achievements – and his life – was cruelly cut short by acute myeloid leukaemia. Diagnosed in June 2011 and treated at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge, Rob achieved full remission but two years after his initial diagnosis the leukaemia returned. Further chemotherapy followed and a stem cell transplant was planned but Rob died aged 21 in December 2013. As a close friend of Rob, Chris Cutchie had no hesitation in selecting the charity for his year of office. This year the sum was boosted by a donation from Porsche East London of a ‘Silverstone driving experience’ which was

auctioned at the Christmas Tournament at Thorndon Park Golf Club. The Rob George Foundation has been set up to: 1) Provide practical and/or financial support to young people with life threatening or terminal illnesses 2) Provide financial support to young people who demonstrate exceptional commitment and/or ability in the worlds of sport or the performing arts but may be held back by their financial situation from pursuing their goal.

GOSFIELD CELEBRATES JOHN EATON Last year’s winning team will be hoping for a repeat of their success at the Belfry.
INTER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP he regional qualifier for the PGA Inter County championship was held at Bishops T Stortford Golf Club recently to produce a county to represent East Region PGA in the finals at the Belfry in October. Essex, as reigning champions, were hoping for the opportunity to become the first county to defend the trophy however after the regulation 18 holes, Essex were tied with Middlesex and a play-off was necessary. The team of Brett Taylor from Rivenhall Oaks, Jason Levermore from Little Channels and James Scade from Ingrebourne Links were relying on Brett Taylor in the play-off and despite having chances on several of the holes, it eventually went to the 5th extra hole before a birdie was enough to put Essex in the final again. We wish them every success at the Belfry on 11th/12th October when they take on the regional winners from across the country.
eniors members of Gosfield Golf Club. S played in the annual event on Thursday 23rd August to celebrate the life of one of it’s long time senior members John Eaton who sadly passed away in 2000. The format started by John in 1997 was for members to play a Stableford format competition in the morning followed by an invitation to wives and partners to join them for an evening of food and convivial conversation in the club house . Although the numbers were a little depleted this year a spirited evening was had by all sharing a choice of 3 main courses followed by the usual excellent sweet trolley. The winner of this years event for the claret jug presented by John to the seniors section was Jonathon Dixon-Smith with 38 points after a round marred by some heavy rain.

Summer is nearly up, plan for Winter! hat dreaded time of year is nearly upon you ... then “end’ of the Golfing season. TMost golfers dread the winter, you play less, the weather stops play and its a lot harder to play well. For me I see opportunity. Autumn/Winter is the time to hit the gym, condition the body and prepare for the following season. Autumn/Winter is when I really encourage my golfers to ramp up their gym/stretch/conditioning programme. This is a time you can get doms and not be too worried as there is no competition in sight! Plan ahead, get a coach on board to help you with your Autumn/Winter plan. Its not just hit the gym and hope for the best, to be the best and to keep improving you must be specific with your training ... Stretching/mobilisation, strength and core and posture. There are 3 parts to my golf conditioning and each one is highly important. Golf IS a sport and all golfers should be treating their bodies like an athlete would. If they do not, injuries WILL happen. My 3 parts to golf conditioning; Stretching/Mobilisation
- Stretching must be specific, do not stretch a muscle that isn’t tight! How do you know? Get a coach that can test you and advise you. Use foam rollers, tennis balls and self massage to mobilise super tight muscles. You can seek a sports massage therapist to do this for you.
Core & Posture - Lay the foundations before you build the walls and roof. The core and posture are very important with golf ... not just the abdominals but the glutes, hip stabilisation, shoulder stabilisation and much more. The core never just means the abdominals, I’m talking total body stabilisation.
Strength - Strengthen the muscles to provide power. Now this part is building the walls and placing the roof on. Essentially building muscle to provide more stability, strength and power.
Functional movement, stretching and mobilising when done correctly can improve your golf so much! Start planning for autumn/winter. Do your research! Enjoy the rest of your golfing season. - 48 -

SKEVINGTON TROPHY Royal Norwich Golf Club – Tuesday 24th July
ssex travelled a day early for a practice round in the Skevington trophy at Royal Norwich Golf Club for E a 27-hole stroke play team competition against Suffolk, Norfolk and Bedfordshire. Match day brought a very hot day and firm conditions on a tricky course and club selection would be vital if Essex were to retain the title and trophy. The morning round brought in some disappointing scores with only Jake Wells 1 over. With the format of the best 6 scores from 8, the afternoon round was going to be hard work. Jesper Laurence scored a great 69 (-2) and Jake wells 72 (+1) to add to his morning round to take the best scratch score and the Skevington Salver, but Suffolk continued their good morning rounds to take the Bob Bagshaw team trophy with Essex coming 2nd. raintree Golf Club was the venue in the 2nd of 3 triangular matches with Suffolk and Norfolk. In stark B contrast in weather conditions from a match involving all 3 sides only days earlier the teams were met by gale like winds. With Essex top of the league, a win against Suffolk would secure them a place in the south east group final. But despite good wins by Charlie Dodds and Luke King and a pair of halves Essex were beaten 5-3. With Essex and Suffolk beating Norfolk 7-1 and 8-0 respectively. This now leaves them joint top with a winner takes all contest at Finn valley later in August. Suffolk will start favourites at their home venue, but Essex must learn from their mistakes and dig deep to win there next match. Many thanks to Braintree GC for their hospitality and use of the excellent course, plus thanks also to the parents for support and help on the day.

South Eastern Group North – County League Match
ESSEX COLTS v MIDDLESEX COLTS West Middlesex Golf Club – Sunday 29th July 2018 he third of the four 2018 Colts League Matches was played on T Sunday 29th July at West Middlesex Golf Club. The extremely hot spell that had prevailed for so many weeks finished on the Saturday and Sunday started wet and windy. West Middlesex Golf Club is the oldest course in Middlesex having first opened in 1891. In fact the layout has not changed much in the intervening 127 years. Another two new faces for the Essex 2018 Colts squad – Oscar Yeomans and Nathan Parrish, both from Chelmsford Golf Club.They joined up with Will Percival (Capt) & Cassidy Steffens (Orsett), Lukas Warren (Thorndon Park), Jack Brown & Shay McQueen (Chelmsford), and Ben Wyatt (Rayleigh) playing in his last match as an amateur – we wish him every success in his professional career. Morning Foursomes teed off in heavy rain – something we have become unused to. Shay & Jack had a good early win of 7&6. Oscar & Nathan then finished 3&2 and Lukas & Cassidy 3&1. Will & Ben were dormy 4 down and battled on to take their game to the 18th finishing all square. Good Foursomes result for Essex 3½ - ½ Weather improved for the afternoon Singles, still windy but only the odd rain squall. Excellent wins of 5&4 and then 6&4 from Lukas and Ben respectively. Followed by Shay 4&3 and Cassidy 3&2. Jack played one of his !""!#4B<054CD.<D morning opponents and won 2&1 on the 17th. Oscar had a very tight game and only lost on the 18th. West Middlesex won the two remaining games, one on the 16th, the other on the 17th. Singles Essex 5 -3. Overall score – Essex 8½ - 3½. All games were played in a great spirit. Good to play and good to watch. The Essex team look forward to playing host to this team in the return match at Thorpe Hall on August 12th. West Middlesex Golf Club made everyone most welcome. Nothing was too much trouble. Thanks to their management, catering and bar staff and members. "<C1;4!9"1!ED4BE<C$4D<E1 ;4F4:<CD1G40!9BC!4-91:;

(From L to R) Roger Walmsley, President Essex Golf Union, Lewis Wright & Harvey Sullivan (Abridge) - Boys’ Team Championship Winners, Josh Gray (Garon Park) – Boys Champion, Jake Wells (Clacton) - Under 16 Champion, Marshal Dale – Captain, Rochford Hundred Golf Club.
he 2018 Boys Championship was held at Rochford Hundred Golf Club in glorious conditions with a gentle breeze blowing to help cool conditions throughout the day, with the Boys under T 16 and under 18 Championships at stake. With a busy schedule around the country this particular week, we had a drop in entries compared to the past few years. A field of just 40 players were scheduled to play the excellently presented course. The morning round is always used as a qualifier for The Telegraph Vitality Junior Golf Championship hosted by PGA Catalunya. This year a 7 handicapper lead the way at the half way stage. Conor Garvey (Playgolf Colchester) had a fantastic start to the championship. Having had very little sleep after returning on a delayed flight from Ireland the night before, Conor managed to return a score which consisted of five birdies and just three bogeys for a total of two under par for an opening 69. This means Conor qualifies for the National Leader board for The Telegraph Vitality Junior Golf Championship which we wish him all the very best of luck with qualifying for the finals. The next best score in was from Josh Gray (Garon Park) who managed a level par 71 which consisted of four birdies and four bogeys. Rory Bennet (Hainault Forest) also had a level par 71, thankful to the 5 birdies that he managed, despite a double bogey on his penultimate hole. Harvey Sullivan (Abridge) & Patrick Arundel (Boyce Hill) both returned at lunch time having secured a solid start to their events with a pair of 72’s securing 4th position going into the afternoon round. One of the favourites for the competition was Chelmsford’s Michael Gilbert, his opening 77 made it difficult to fight back as he was 8 shots off the lead at lunch but his level par 71 in the afternoon secured second position in the event overall so a great effort after a disappointing morning round - 52 -

finishing on 148 (+6). Unfortunately, the lack of sleep must have played a part in Conor Garvey’s afternoon round, his 82 saw him slip to 9th position overall. Harvey Sullivan followed up his 72 in the morning with a 77, which he was disappointed with yet still sufficient for tied 3rd on 149 (+7). The two others that finished on 149 with Harvey, were Callum Newton (Orsett) & Jake Wells (Clacton). Josh Gray managed to limit the amount of dropped shots on the day to 3, finishing with a 74 in the afternoon to win the Essex Boys Championship by 3 shots from Michael Gilbert. Congratulations Josh on your victory, becoming Essex Boys Champion 2018. Conor Garvey (Playgolf The Under 16 Championship which is also run on the same day saw Colchester) – Best AM Score 69. Jake Wells’ impressive total of 149 pick up the trophy. Congratulations to Jake. Congratulations to Harvey Sullivan & Lewis Wright who won the Essex Boys Team Prize on behalf of Abridge Golf Club, finishing with a total of 299 (+15). A special thank you to Rochford Hundred Golf Club and their members for their hospitality, also to Rochford Hundred Golf Club Past Captain Marshall Dale for being present, not only starting but also for presenting the prizes to the juniors along with Roger Walmsley, Essex Golf Union’s President.

UNDER 12’S CHAMPIONSHIP AND BRIAN FULLER TROPHY Braxted Park – Thursday 26th July beautifully sunny day at Braxted Park saw a field of 25 under twelve year olds battling it out to become Essex’s Under 12 A Champion. There was no lack of quality in the field with most players scoring below their handicaps despite extremely hot conditions. There were some fantastic scores returned on a day where a lot of juniors will see their handicaps cut after some seriously low scores in comparison to their handicaps. Alexander Oddy finishing 6th with an 81 playing of a handicap of 20 was just one of those examples. Another notable score was from Oliver Baker (Colchester) shooting 80 off his 17 handicap to finish 5th overall after countback. Charlie Croker (Epping) returned a score of 80 to secure 4th on countback. Pierce Mosely (Epping) was the lowest handicapper in the field and his 78 was enough to secure 3rd place losing to Bailee Taylor (Colne Valley) on countback. Bailee managed a phenomenal score of 78 and playing of a handicap of 23 will see his handicap reduce dramatically following such a great result. Dylan Hussey (Romford) was one of the early starters but his impressive 75 off of an 11 handicap, meant he was in for a long wait. That wait I’m sure he will agree was well worth it, being crowned U12 Champion of Essex. The scoring overall was impressive and all the players should be applauded for their efforts. We thank Braxted Park Golf Club and all of their staff and members for their outstanding hospitality. The manner in which they presented their course was magnificent and we are sure that many that visited will return in the near future due to the feedback we received from players and their parents. - 53 -

BOYS FOURSOMES CHAMPIONSHIP Gosfield Lake Golf Club – Wednesday 8th August 2018 osfield Lake Golf Club welcomed the return of The Boys Foursomes Championship, 30 pairs took part from Clubs around the county to compete for the junior equivalent of the G Essex foursomes Championship. A Scratch Strokeplay Championship which is played over 36 holes. The morning saw a bright start to the day with sunshine and a gentle breeze. As the day went on, the weather remained dry but the wind picked up which made the afternoon round slightly more challenging for the players. Gosfield had experienced a welcome drop of rain or two in the days leading up to the event which made the course play beautifully after a hot dry summer. The scoring conditions looked to be tough after the first few groups returned from their morning rounds, until Liam Evans & Luke King (Thorpe Hall) carded a 73 just one over par. Next best in was Conor Garvey & Jack Moutell (Playgolf Colchester) who managed a 74. Wilf Elliot & Jake Wells (Clacton) were two back on a gross 75 going into lunch. The afternoon winds caused some difficulties with the leading groups, Conor Garvey & Jack Moutell fell down the leader-board after only managing an 88 to follow up from their 74 in the morning which left them 8th overall. Wilf Elliot & Jake Wells also struggled to capitalise on their morning performance finishing with a total of 158 after their afternoon round of 83 saw them slip to 5th. Liam Evans & Luke King also fell to 3rd position after an afternoon round of 82, 9 shots off their morning total. Orsett’s Woody Eastman & Callum Newton improved on their morning score of 79 by 4 shots, returning a 75 to clinch 2nd spot overall with a total of 154. A fantastic effort which more than deserved the runner up position in this year’s competition. Garon Park’s in-form Josh Gray, 2018 Essex Boys’ Champion, was partnering William Dove, their morning round of 77 looked pretty average at lunch, but following it up with a 74 in the afternoon which included a number of lengthy putts holed by the pair saw them climb the leader-board to take first place by 3 shots from the Orsett pairing. We thank our fantastic hosts, Gosfield Lake Golf Club, their staff and members for once again hosting this event and providing Josh Gray & William Dove their usual superb hospitality. (Garon Park).

U14 CHAMPIONSHIP / FRED STILLWELL TROPHY Maylands Golf Club – Tuesday 14th August 2018 he Under 14 Championship returned once again played to Maylands Golf Club. The course was in good condition T considering the dry summer, the weather was not as hot as it has been but the sun shone and there was no sign of rain. The Under 14’s Championship is played as a gross score stroke play competition, and the Fred Stillwell trophy is presented for the best nett score. Thirty four players from around the county set out from 9.00a.m. onwards, and a few hours later Rory Bennet (Hainault Forest) returned to set a challenging Clubhouse target. His gross score, a one under par 70 was excellent and featured 4 birdies. William Horne’s (Thorndon Park) double bogey on his last hole was costly as he had made three birdies on that nine to get to one under after dropping two shots on his way out. Thomas Atkinson (L to R) Rory Bennet (Hainault (Chigwell) & Bobby Rothery-Archer (Garon Park) were three Forest) – U14 Champion 2018, Bob shots back from William on 75. Thomas took 3rd on countback Powley- Captain of Maylands Golf after negotiating the back nine in one under par. Rory was Club, Patrick McLean-Tattan (Romford) – Fred Stillwell Trophy delighted to be crowned champion especially as this was his last Winner 2018). year as an under 14 competitor. In the Fred Stillwell Trophy competition, Patrick McLean-Tattan (Romford) managed a leaderboard topping nett 65 as he continues his fantastic form this year which has seen his handicap plummet to a low teen figure from a mid-twenties handicap earlier in the year. Congratulations Patrick. The 2018 Under 14 Essex Champion golfer was Rory Bennet, with an excellent 70, and the winner of the Stillwell Trophy was Patrick McLean-Tattan with his score of nett 65. Our thanks go to Maylands Golf Club, their staff and members for hosting the event and offering their course for the day. We would also like to thank Bob Powley, Captain of Maylands Golf Club. Congratulations to all those who took part and confirmed the future of Essex golf looks very promising indeed.

U18 Inter Counties League
ESSEX v HERTFORDSHIRE v MIDDLESEX Abridge Golf Club – Sunday 5th August 2018 nother gloriously sunny day greeted the players for our final Inter Counties Match of the season at Abridge. The slight breeze kept players cool, but the continuing hot weather made A for a fast and bouncy course with unforgiving greens. In the lead match Essex’s captain Callum Newton was up against England man Ben Pierleoni and a close fought encounter which went to the 18th ended up even Stephen. Cai James, Callum Hensby, Will Dove and anchor man Max Maynard all emerged from their encounters with maximum points enabling Essex to finally run out winners by three points from Hertfordshire and six from Middlesex. Whilst Essex currently hold top position in the league this may all change when BB&O meet Hertfordshire on 2nd September. As always our thanks go to Abridge GC for hosting this event and providing full use of their facilities. A footnote to this match was the absence of County Champion Curtis Knipes from the Essex team on duty with the England Boys. Curtis’s imperious form in recent months clearly caught the national team selectors’ eye and he was in Scotland at Royal Dornoch preparing for the annual Home Internationals tournament. As many readers who follow the form of our Essex golfers will know Curtis performed with distinction, playing in all the matches he emerging with a record of 4-1-1 with the only defeat coming after England had already won the trophy for a third time in succession. Clearly one of the best players in his age group in the country we look forward to reading about his further successes and inspiring a few more of the county’s youngsters.

SOUTH EASTERN JUNIOR FOURSOMES Royal Norwich Golf Club – Thursday 16th August 2018 he annual South East Group Foursomes was held this year at The Royal Norwich Golf Club. The format being four pairs with the best three scores counting. Inconveniently just as our 8 lads set T out on the morning rounds the rain started coming down and didn’t stop all day. Under 18 captain Callum Newton (Orsett) in his last match for the Essex Under 18’s was paired with Callum Hensby (Stoke by Nayland) who had received favourable exam results just that morning. Fresh from their win in the County Foursomes the week before and riding high were Josh Gray and William Dove (Garon Park). Whilst some regulars were missing much was still expected from our team. By lunch time Essex were placed third with a score of plus 15 behind Surrey and local boys Norfolk. The afternoon continued in much the same weather, but everyone soldiered on and just when play finally finished so the rain also decided to stop. - 56 -
Essex County News Email: office@essexgolfunion.org

When all the numbers had been added Essex were finally declared 2nd with plus 16 points just one point more that Surrey who were the winners on plus 15. Commendably three of the best four afternoon scores were 1st Harrison Linney (West Essex) and Harvey Sullivan (Abridge) (70), 2nd Josh Gray and William Dove (70), and 4th Callum Newton and Callum Hensby (71). Oh that our morning play had been that good, but great determination was shown by all the players in their effort to win this coveted competition. Our final pairing of big hitting Cai James and Patrick Arundel didn’t have such a good day. Royal Norwich Golf Club which has been in existence for 125 years will no longer be playing at this course which has been sold for housing. So before the bulldozers move in Cai and Patrick visited as much of the estate as possible. Golf can be such a cruel game and foursomes even crueller. We would like to thank The South Eastern Group for their organisation, Royal Norwich for the use of their golf course and their green staff for presenting a good course also the catering staff for the food provided.

fter a practice round the previous Monday for valuable course knowledge, Essex arrived at Fynn Valley Golf Club A for the all-important winner takes all clash in the south east group U16s. With the group tied at the top between Essex and Suffolk on 6 points Essex knew that only a win would ensure a place in the final at Brighton in September. Fynn Valley was an interesting venue with some good holes and a few shorter tricky ones. With 8 single matches being played the target was 4 and a half, not forgetting to beat Norfolk also. With handicaps between 2-5, Essex on paper were favourites in the scratch match play, but often with match play, things don't always go to plan. After an indifferent start, Essex were up in 2 and down in 4 matches, by the turn it got worse, courtesy of some wayward shots and poor course management, and it got worse with 1 match finishing on the 11th hole. Essex ended up defeated 7.5 to 0.5 and a narrow 4.5 to 3.5 victory over Norfolk. A season of much promise ended in disappointment.

Seniors County Team League Match
ESSEX v BEDFORDSHIRE Orsett Golf Club – Tuesday 21st August 2018
his was for Essex a dead rubber as due to the loss against Herts last month we had no chance of reaching the league final. But it was an opportunity to play new players and get back to T winning ways. Bedfordshire are a small County with very few Clubs but in recent years their Teams have been getting noticeably stronger. It was a sunny and warm day when we arrived at Orsett the course was immaculate and in superb condition given the very dry summer and their fairway watering system was certaily paying dividends. We got off to a steady start but it was soon evident that this Bedfordshire side would be no pushover and indeed we were down in the first three matches. As the games reached the 12th green the first 3 games were all down, but Mark Whiten who was playing number one, won the short hole and proceeded to finish his match on the 17th green with a fine 3/1 win. His fellow Club mate Steve Rooney was not so lucky losing on the last hole 1 down. Michael Partridge was having a fine match but on the 17th Tee was 2 down, he won the last two holes to finish all square. $ $ $ Then there came two very substantial $ ",-./01$2/3-45$6,78$',793,$:74;<$ wins Mark Stones and Tony Wheals both ! winning 7/6. CHARITY DAY AT STOKE BY NAYLAND charity event for Breast Cancer was held at Stoke By Nayland Golf Club on 1st A August, which was well supported with almost 100 players. This event was run for the 2nd year in succession by Ray Harris and his team, they raised £6500, beating the previous years’ £4500. Ray lost his daughter to this dreadful disease in 2009 leaving Kate’s Son Joe who was six at the time with his family, for many years Joe didn’t want to talk about his Mother’s passing, but in 2016 he surprised his family by announcing he was going to have his head shaved in order to raise money for Cancer research so that others shouldn’t have to lose their Mothers to the disease. He raised £1,000 and along with his family decided to start the Charity Golf day. Following this golf day, Joe surprised his family by watching videos of his Mother, this
was the first time he’d ever asked since her passing. Cancer research will hopefully achieve its ambition of nobody dying of the disease by the year 2050.
The winning team with a score of 97 points were (in black left to right): Bob Tokely, Don Wiggins, Ian Collett and Keith Hodgson. Ray and Joe are centre of picture.

As a store that has been trading in the golf industry for over 23 years one of our biggest challenges is advertising and marketing. As we all know golf is played by a small percent of the population there fore any general advertising such as news papers and radio has a massive audience that has no interest in golf at all. Therefore the wastage costs are enormous. Finding a media partner that gets to your golfing customer, within your ‘drive time’ is not easy. However ‘Essex Golfer’ does just that. We have been advertising in this maga zine for many, many years and not only does it bring a constant stream of customers to our store it also introduces new custo mers who have recently come into golf or were not aware of us before. It is cost effective, gets to the right audience and by advertising every month keeps our store in the back of their minds when considering their next purchase. NEVADA BOB S, COLC HES TER
