s we move into September we now find our store full of Autumn/winter clothing (disappointing as no one likes Summer to end!).

However this has freshened the store up and both the ladies and men’s section still has plenty of colour but a little more warmth! The ladies is lead by Daily Sports and is strong as ever (We sold 20% more Daily in the summer this year than last). The men’s has many different brands such as Underarmour, Callaway, ProQuip, Ping and Oscar Jacobson. This along with winter boots and shoes should enable most golfers to carry on playing (weather permitted). Walk in from down the line A

lignment is such a critical part of a golf shot, and yet many golfers make it harder for themselves by walking into the shot from the side. This gives you very poor visuals and orientation of the target. Always as I am doing in the picture walk in from down the target line, so my visual focus is directed on where I want the ball to go, and it enables me to pick my intermediary target, a small mark infront of the ball that I align my club’s leading edge over easily. Rochford Hundred Golf Clubhouse is ‘Officialy Haunted’

A

few months ago we were contacted by a group of ‘Paranormal Investigators’ to ask if they could investigate the rumours of the ‘ghost’ of Anne Boleyn who walked the upper floors of what is probably the oldest golf clubhouse in the world. After arriving in the early evening with all their ‘Ghostbusting’ paraphernalia and staying in the

darkness of the top floor until the early morning they concluded that there were, in fact, five ‘presences’ (unidentified}. At some stage the group will return to see if they can identify the presences! Results can be seen on You Tube (look for GCUK South EastRochford Hall) where you can find several films taken by the investigators.

New “Green Course”

R

ochford Hundred Golf Club have set up a new measured “Green Course” for those golfers who cannot hit the ball as far as they used to. Even though it’s a shorter course it is a qualifying course for handicap purposes. This enables the shorter hitter to enjoy the course without worrying too much about carrying hazards from the tee. Happy days! Also installed are buggy paths to giving our buggy riders extended use of the course throughout wet winter months.

Inside the clubhouse the first floor has been fully re-furbished providing a “Long Room” which is ideal for conferences, training meetings and presentation days for groups up to 40 attendees.. A big screen television gives the possibility for ‘Power Point’ presentations via our supplied HDMI leads for all browsers. The adjacent ‘Blue Room’ is ideal for that private dining for 32 people. Both rooms offer fabulous views over the 18th hole.

spirits to congratulate Dave in his victory. Lots of golf was played out during the course of the day, with even a Stableford competition for us mere mortals who did not have even a sniff at the scratch competition. In the Full Handicap morning competition, Club Chairman Dave White, ruled the roost with a nett 69 (beating the eventual club champion on count-back. In the afternoon Stableford competition, 41 points was good enough (also on count back from the Club Captain Adam “Ads” Painter) to take the winners Shield crowning a wonderful day. From the golf course, the celebrations spilled over into the bar area to celebrate the wonderful winnings, but in likewise fashion for The Notleys we progressed to the very important putting and chipping competitions, and enjoyed the wonderful victuals from Deb Hulme’s club house, before finishing a great day with celebrations in Braintree town centre with our member Steve Thompson at “Tomos Tavern”. Already our key challengers to Dave for the Club Championship are in training for 2016. Not just Craig and Tommy, but local publican Derek Pettigrew – all of which have been challenging for a number of years now, and victory would be a key feather in their golfing caps. Many thanks from the Notleys members to Deb’s and here clubhouse team, plus all the ground staff who set up the course in a fair but challenging configuration.

Bentley Veterans Guest Day O

n a bright sunny day, over 60 members and guests teed off at the Bentley Golf Club Veterans Guest Day. For the first time, we allowed members to bring up to 3 guests each and lowered the age limit for the guest to 50 and at just £35 per couple it seemed to tick everyone’s box, and the day was very well supported. As the “Ashes” series was being played on the same day the Veterans Captain Roger Winston thought it would be a novel idea to have a Christmas Lunch after the game with Turkey and all the trimmings, including crackers! After the lunch was finished and to every one’s further delight, it was announced England had beaten the “Aussies” in the third test. The game was won by past Veterans Captain Peter Rolph and his playing partner Mike Goodwin, who were also the winners last year.

he Bronze Shield Final was played at Thorpe Hall Golf Club on 7th August between Stokeby-Nayland and Forrester Park. It was a beautiful sunny day, and the course looked immaculate. Stoke-by-Nayland won the toss and won the first

CORRECT CLUB and hit more greens!! I

f you want to hit more greens, it is important you get a better understanding of how far you actually hit each club... You have to honest with yourself, a lot of people over estimate how far they hit with each club, and it doesn’t matter too much. It is more important you understand your own personal club distances!! Know how far you hit each club - Working out how are you hit each club will help you massively. Start off working out what you hit from the 100 yard marker, the 150 yards marker, a how far you realistically hit your driver. If you have a range finder or a GPS can also help you work out these distances or go on a launch monitor if you have access to one. Aim to work these out on a calm and warmish day. Once you know these you can make some informed decisions on which bunkers you can carry, how much of the dog leg you should cut off and what club you should be using.

Get a Range Finder or GPS - There are lots of great devices on the market today that can give you accurate information on distances... There are watches, range finders and GPS units you can clip onto your bag... Having one is like having a caddy that gives you some good information to improve your course management ... Actual Distance versus Playing Distance Once you know what the actual distance is you have to take in the factors that will affect how far the ball goes. Some of the main factors affecting how far your ball goes are uphill or downhill, temperature, wind strength & direction, lie, altitude and green firmness ...You have to make your best guess about what is the effect of each these elements and work out the playing distance and club accordingly. For example, you may have 150 yards but may be uphill and into the wind so play the yardage at 170 yards and club accordingly ...

ork hard, play hard – apt but true. It’s all very well practising over and over but take time to reflect on your improvement year on year, tournament on tournament and hole on hole. Dwell on that hole in one – was your head super sharp? Had you mentally pictured the ball soaring cleanly through the, albeit, crisp British air and sinking effortlessly into the hole jangling the flag as part of its trajectory! Sportsmanly as always but ensuring you play your game, be well prepared and fuel appropriately. Failing to prepare is preparation for failure. Refuel as you continue around the back nine and try these sports muffins to replace muscle glycogen if blood sugar starts to descend ...

Sports Muffins INGREDIENTS

4oz of butter or margarine 2 -3oz of sugar or Agave nectar 2 eggs 4 oz. of self-raising or wheat free flour

Variations: - Strawberries, raspberries, brazil nuts, almonds, raisins, pumpkin seeds, coconut, vanilla essence and cinnamon. METHOD 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13.

Heat oven to 190° C. Place muffin cases into tin. Weigh butter and sugar and place into a mixing bowl. Blend well to form a pale creamy consistency. Crack two eggs individually. Weigh chosen flour. Mix one egg into the bowl with half the sieved flour ensuring the egg doesn’t curdle. Mix the remaining egg and sieve flour. Gently stir the mixture to allow all ingredients to be thoroughly mixed without overworking the mixture. Add chosen ingredients. Additional protein for muscle recovery, berries to boost the thyroid and seeds for additional zinc (immune boosting). Use metal spoons to guide the ingredients into the muffincases, half fill each case. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes until the muffins are well risen and firm to the touch. Remove the muffins and place on a cooling rack.

I

n early August, 52 past and present Lady Captains competed for the Society of Lady Captains Friendship Salver at Ballards Gore Golf Club. As usual, the competition was a drawn 4BBB, but this time it was a shotgun start which everyone enjoyed and appreciated. The course was in great condition, which led to some cracking scores. In 3rd place with 43 points were Barbara Ingram (West Essex) & Janice Hamilton (The Warren), 2nd were Caroline Fields (Braintree) & Margaret Oliver (Orsett) with 46 points. The overall winners of the day, lifting the Friendship Salver with a magnificent 48 points, were Shirley Jiggins (Braintree) & Carole Loveday (Romford). Thanks to Lady Captain Hilary Mackay for her help and Ballards Gore for hosting the event and the fabulous buffet at the end of the day.

tarting with 49 entries from club qualifying rounds across the county, the Society of Essex Lady Captains Ida Bunting Memorial Trophy 2015 was brought to a conclusion with both semi-finals and the final played in August. The semi-finals, played at Bentley Golf Club, were Catherine Wilkins (Stock Brook Manor) v Claire King (Crondon Park), and Linda Woods (Royal Epping) v Maria Barham (Boyce Hill). Play proceeded steadily until the 3rd hole when the rain came, even with the rain; some very good golf was played. However, both matches were decided before the 14th hole. Claire King (Crondon Park) and Linda Woods (Royal Epping), emerged clear winners and proceeded to the final at Warley Park Golf Club.The losing players Catherine and Maria received mementos from our Lady President Jan Collier for their achievement in reaching the semifinals. Due to torrential rain, poor visibility, flooded greens and bunkers it was touch and go as to whether the final could be played or be rescheduled for another day.The players together with their caddies and Committee members waited and after a light lunch, it was decided to

play. The girls battled through the constant rain with the help of their caddies and played some lovely golf. Eventually, Linda Woods won 6 and 5 on the 13th hole. All retired for a well-earned celebratory drink and presentation. Thanks to Bentley and Warley Park Golf Clubs for the use of their courses, and to our referees Lynne Kirkam and Pennie Lipscomb from the Warren who did a splendid job. Basildon Golf Course Welcomes The PGA East Anglian Open Championship

he tournament which is an official order of merit event for the PGA in England (East), will be played on the 14th and 15th of September. This is a full stroke-play event for 36 holes with 18 holes being played on day one and 18 holes being played on day two. The Pro-Am immediately follows the event on Wednesday, 16 September 2015, with the leading players from the event making up the field together with a select number of additional golf professionals.

arah Bennett PGA Fellow Professional certainly has the blueprint for the successful introduction and retention of ladies new to golf. GolfingGirl is entering its seventh year and has been used as a pilot for many local initiatives. The conversion rate of membership to a variety of courses in the County is very high with a high percentage of ladies continuing with the game well over 5 years of starting golf. “All I am trying to achieve is to offer my GolfingGirls the opportunity to try this wonderful game within an ideal environment, the

rest will take care of itself.” Another successful day saw 20 GolfingGirls all who are currently attending Sarah’s structured coaching individual and group sessions along with other activities are proving extremely popular. Pledges Support Drive to Get More Women and Girl Golfers C

lubs, counties and golf media have signed pledges to support England Golf’s drive to get more women and girls playing the game. They committed to action at this week’s England Golf Women and Girls’ Conference at Frilford Heath Golf Club in Oxfordshire, which showcased inspiring women, success stories and great initiatives. The promises support England Golf’s pledge to continue working closely with national and county partners and to support clubs to increase women and girls’ participation and membership. The conference was part of England Golf’s first Golf Week and it followed the launch of the video campaign #ThisGirlGolfs which aims to challenge perceptions and inspire participation. The video features women and girls from all over the country and from different walks of life and backgrounds who are enjoying golf for many reasons and fitting it into their everyday lives. The conference picked up this theme by debunking myths surrounding golf and showing that: • Golf can be fitted into all lifestyles and it doesn’t have to take hours to play. For example, Golf Express, which has been launched in Staffordshire, promotes 9hole golf and after work roll-ups. • Golf isn’t a stuffy game but offers many experiences including traditional, social, recreational and family. Marketing expert Anabel Sexton urged the golf industry to project a positive image of the game and also advocated challenging dress codes, commenting: “Society moves on. Is it still relevant to make young girls wear clothes they wouldn’t be seen dead in anywhere else?”

• Golf is a game for all, not a game for men. BBC Breakfast presenter, Naga Munchetty was featured, saying: “Girls should get into golf because this is not a man’s sport, this is about being strong, this is about being competitive, this is about being the best you possibly can.” • Golf is great for health and wellbeing. Playing 18-holes will burn at least 900 calories and will take more than 10,000 steps. • Golf is an affordable game. Lee Porter, the PGA Professional attached to Hylands Golf Complex in Chelmsford, has been voted Clubmaker of the Year by the Golf Clubmakers Association in the UK. Lee now ranks in the top ten custom-fit clubmakers throughout Europe. No wonder he counts 8 touring golf pros as customers, including the ever popular local Pro, Robbie Coles.

Are longer and lighter drivers really the way to go? T

his is a really interesting topic as the mainstream marketing would lead us to believe that if you want to gain distance then it really is the only way to go. But I suppose that’s the whole point of marketing – right? In the table below you will find independent data from The Tom Wishon Golf Company with regards to driver length and accuracy. If you look closely at the numbers you will see that an 18 handicap hits a 45” driver about a yard shorter than a 43” driver and misses the centre of the fairway by another 9 yards for their trouble! Why?

Because as I’ve discussed many times before an off centre strike costs ball speed and ball speed equates to distance. In the same respect driver faces are not flat, they are curved from both toe to heel and sole to crown so an off centre strike will make the ball deviate from the target. As you look through the data you will notice that there really is no down side to playing a shorter driver – in fact in all handicap groups the 43” driver performed extremely well. From here it does not take too much working out why golfers love their 3 wood so much – it’s 43” inches long. I think the most interesting element is the lowest handicap group where you would expect better performance from the longer club but even here we lose less than 1 yard in distance but gain 6 yards in accuracy. In all honesty I don’t think I would miss the yard. So how about the weight, is light good? I look at it like this - a heavier shaft or total weight of a golf club can help a player who has a quick tempo or transition (the change of direction from backswing to downswing) – which is a lot of golfers. In my opinion very few golfers have a slow transition or lack being able to ‘turn on’ the power. If they do then they should be playing a light shaft but give that to a player swinging at 100mph and you are looking for a lot of golf balls. On paper a lighter driver can offer more speed, but club head speed – not ball speed and ball speed equals distance.

Please don’t think I am saying that all golfers should be playing a short driver - you should simply play the length of driver that allows you to hit the middle of the club consistently. Finally, stay away from the hacksaw - it’s not as simple as cutting a couple of inches from your driver shaft as both the shaft flex and head weight need to taken into consideration but in most cases it can be done.

The FOUR .. . Gluteus Maximus

M

y favourite subject is the gluteus maximus! An athlete or sportsman without a good functioning set of glutes will more often then not have back pain or some other form of injury, will struggle with the power aspect of their game/sport and overall will not function at full capacity. A sign of poor functioning glutes ... no muscular tone! The glutes are separated up into three parts, the gluteus maximus, minimus and medius. I spend a lot of time with my clients training especially the gluteus medius which in my experience I found to be weak in many people causing dis-function and back pain. The gluteus medius is situated on the outer surface of the pelvis. So how do we train the glutes? I would always GLUTEAL MUSCLES

start with activation excercises ... small excercises to get the glutes working functionally and in the right order. The hamstring should activate, followed by the glutes followed by the back, if this sequence is wrong function will be lost and back pain, loss of power, lack of tone and poor performance will be a result. A good excercise is called “the clam”. Look it up on youtube. Once the glutes function in the right sequence they need conditioning with squates, lunges, deadlifts, hip extensions, bridges and one legged excercises. It’s very important that technique with such big excercises is perfect. Seek a good personal trainer of golf Biomechanic that can guide you. Happy glute building!

On Course Foundation Joins ‘Forces’ With The London Golf Show

he Golf Show Group, organisers of The London Golf Show, have partnered with the On Course Foundation for its exhibition 13–15 November at Glow, Bluewater. The partnership will see the On Course Foundation raising money from the busy features at the London Golf Show. Surrey-based On Course Foundation’s golf skills and employment events allow attendees to explore how golf can help them on the road to recovery, and how the industry can provide employment. It has been a busy August for County Golf with the Boys Championship, Boys Foursomes, U14 Championship and the U12 Championship all being competed for as well as County Matches. The Semi-Final matches have been played of the Thornton Cup, Leslie Wood, Seniors and the Norman Plum Trophy and we are all looking forward to the Finals.

VETERANS TROPHIES The competition was played at Warley Park Golf Club and it was a wet and chilly day, hardly August weather, as 83 players, representing 40 Essex Clubs, braved the elements. There are two trophies, the main one for the overall winner and the second for the best score returned by a player who is over 70 years of age. Derek Entwistle (Basildon) won the Veterans Trophy with a stableford score of 37 points. David Crown (The Rayleigh Club) came second with 37 points on countback, just beating Dave Scott (Langdon Hills) who scored 36 points. Rex Argent (Warley Park) won the Over 70’s Trophy with Derek Entwistle. a score of 32 points and Fred Beaumont (Hainault Forest) was runner-up with a 30 points. In addition to the Trophies, medals were presented to the winners and runnerup together with multiple bottles of wine. Bottles of wine were also presented to the players who finished in third, fourth and fifth place overall. ESSEX BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP The 2015 Boys Championship was held at Garon Park Golf Club. 66 under 18 players played the excellent West and South courses. Cassidy Steffens (Orsett) had the best morning score of 70, this earned Cassidy the chance to go through to the final stages of The Telegraph Junior Championships, sponsored by BMW. The afternoon round produced some good scores and ended with Jack Dyer (Rochford Hundred) and Arron Edwards-Hill (Chelmsford) tied for the championship on 3 over par scores of 143. The Boys Championship rules dictate that in the case of a tie, a playoff should define the winner. After an exciting climax, Jack went on to win the first extra hole to claim the Boys Championship for second time in 3 years. Boys Championship, the teams consist of 3 player, with the best two scores in each round, 3 counting. This year’s winners with a score of 291 were Chelmsford represented by Arron Edwards-Hill, Ryan Tatton and Oscar Yeomans in second place were Jack Dyer, Henry Gibbons and Connor Morris from Rochford Hundred with a score of 294. Simon Cuthbert (Thorndon Park) had a hole in one on the 8th on the South Course, this is a 152 yard, par 3 hole and he was presented with twelve golf balls.

BOYS FOURSOMES The U18 Essex Boys Foursomes was played at Gosfield Lake on Wednesday 5 August 2015. 35 pairs competed representing 28 clubs from all across the County. At the end of the morning round William Percival and Alfie Buttle from Orsett were leading with an excellent score of 72 and they continued their performance in the afternoon with a gross 73 for a 145 total to win the Championship.

U14 CHAMPIONSHIP The U14 Championship is an 18 hole scratch medal play competition, played concurrently with the Fred Stillwell Trophy, which is a handicap medal play competition. The Fred Stillwell Trophy was first presented in 1996 by Fred Stillwell, a past President of the County Golf Union. The Trophy for the U14 Championship was first presented in 2001 by Ted Gaffney, also one of our Past Presidents. This year the U14 Boys Championship was won by James Styles (Chigwell) with a brilliant gross score of 77. Runner up was Harvey Payne (Chelmsford) with gross 78 on countback and Max Moreton (Bentley) came third also with 78. Max Moreton won the The Fred Stillwell Trophy with a nett score of 62. Runner up was Keiran James Styles. Derham (The Warren) with a nett 65 and in third place was Rory Bennet (Hainault Forest) with a net 68. Harriet Lynch (Thorndon Park) who had a gross 75 won the prize for Max Moreton. the best Girls Gross Score.

U12 CHAMPIONSHIP The Competition was played at Regiment Way (Little Channels) Golf Club in the second year of the three year rotation from Crowlands Heath. 28 youngsters played the surprisingly challenging 9 hole course. Thomas Vass (Five Lakes) won the U12 Boys Championship with a gross 73, the 9 over par round was helped by a trio of birdies midway through his back nine. Teddy Papple (Stock Brook Manor) was second, running close with a score of 74, winning on countback from third place Lewis Wright (North Weald) who also carded a 74. The winner of the Brian Fuller Trophy with a nett 56 was Louis Vallis (Crowlands Heath) with Finley Carrick (Bentley) in second place with a net 58 taking second place on countback from Dominic Hoskin (Benton Hall) who had to settle for third Thomas Vass. after also scoring a nett 58. After a weather forecast that threatened heavy rain with thunder and lightning around midday. We were extremely lucky as the klaxons appeared whilst the final group were putting out on the final hole, fortunately they were not required. The heavens opened and the skies lit up just minutes after the last player holed out on eighteen. There was however some heavy intermittent showers but they failed to dampen the spirits of the field. CLUB TEAM EVENTS The Thornton Challenge Cup , Leslie F Wood, Essex Seniors Team Championship, Norman Plum Trophy and the Youth Shield have all reached the final stages of their matches. The Allan Lockwood Trophy semi and final matches will be played on the 13 September at Boyce Hill. All details are on the website.

MENS COUNTY TEAM County v Middlesex With team spirit high, Essex played Middlesex in the third England Golf South Eastern Group (North) League match of the season over the delightful Canons Brook course in Harlow. The course was fast running in the summer conditions which necessitated accuracy and controlled shot making from both sides. Middlesex came into the match as leaders of the Northern Section League having played one more match than Essex but shading top spot on game points. So this was a critical match for the Essex team and the players were suitably motivated demonstrating this with a resounding morning foursomes lead of 3½ matches to a ½. The afternoon session proved to be much closer with Todd Clements, returning from an excellent performance in the English Amateur Championships, leading the way by defeating Middlesex top player Pavan Sagoo 5&4 having raced to a six hole lead after six holes. Middlesex then rallied in the next four matches with two wins and two halved matches before Arthur Leonard and Taylor Carter closed the match out for Essex both with comprehensive 5&4 wins. A notable performance on the day was from Essex Boys Champion Jack Dyer (Rochford Hundred) marking his League debut with a fine foursomes win in the morning and securing a vital half against Middlesex most experienced player Tommy King in a nail biting afternoon encounter. At the after proceedings, the respective County Captains’ complemented Canons Brook on the condition of the course and their hospitality and acknowledged the fantastic spirit this match was played in. Essex now play Hertfordshire in the final league match on 30th August at West Herts where a steady performance should see Essex into the Daily Telegraph Salver Final at Broadstone Warren in Dorset on 4th October. - 44 -

SENIORS COUNTY TEAM Seniors v BB & O On a fine summers day, Essex arrived at Theydon Bois knowing that only a win would keep their hopes of winning their group alive and proceeding to the final. The day held out fine but unfortunately Essex were just a halved match away from their dream. After 9 holes it was fairly even although BB&O did appear to have a slight advantage. As the holes reached the trickier back nine, it was clear that Essex were staging a comeback and now seemed to be in contention. First to finish was Mark Lazarus who won with 3 holes remaining, then Steve Hazell who was 3 down with 3 to play staged a magnificent fight back to win the last and halve his match. There then followed our two Boyce Hill players Mark Stones and Chris Aukett both of whom recorded wins on the 17th. Then Geoff King who was playing England International David Lane won the 17th to go down the last all square and then halved the 18th to gain another halved match. We had taken 4 points from the first 5 matches and hadn’t lost a single match. Next to conclude his match was Mike Copping who recorded a resounding 7 & 5 victory albeit over a last minute substitute. Five wins for and only 2 halves against. Four matches left on the course, first Trevor Patmore came to the 18th, he was 3 down when last we heard and it transpired he had fought back to 1 down, but both Trevor and his opponent were through the green on the 18th with their tee shots, both chipped on but Trevor missed his putt and then conceded to lose 2 down. Ian Grant and Chris Rate were well beaten and so it turned to the last match on the course Tommy Dods who had been 3 down but had recovered to 1 down teeing off on the short 15th. His opponent birdied fifteen, a half on the 16th and a loss down 17 meant that Tommy lost 3 holes down with 1 to play. In normal circumstances, a halved match against possibly the strongest team in the league would be very acceptable, however the defeat to Bedfordshire at the beginning of the season proved very costly and meant that even if we beat Hertfordshire in our last league match, we could still not win the league. SE Counties Seniors Foursomes This event has had its format changed in recent years and now comprises of a round robin event with each of the four counties playing each other over the morning and afternoon rounds. After an arduous journey around London for the morning start and Essex got off to a good start with Romford pair Steve Hazell and Mark Lazurus holding there own against the top Middlesex pair and finally clinching a 1 hole victory on the 18th Green. The second match did not look so good, as Essex were always down against Middlesex and were in fact 4 down with 4 to play. Nevertheless with some determined play Ian Waller and new boy Chris Philips, managing to win the last 4 holes and halve the match. Tikki Hadjionau and his partner were always up against it against the Kent pair which included an English International and finally lost 2 down. Upminster pair Mike Hopping and Clive Pemberton were well beat by the Hertforshire pair with 6 holes still remaining. The final pair from Boyce Hill Chris Aukett and new England International Mark Stones had a fine victory over the Hertfordshire pair which included Essex old boy Peter Bax (ex Thorpe Hall).Thus the morning round ended with Essex just ½ a point behind the joint leaders Hertfordshire and Kent who were both on 3 points.

The afternoon saw the clouds brewing for rain and the wind picking up. Steve Hazel and Mark Lazurus were involved in their usual battle and came to the 18th green 1 down. Unfortunately, Steve had a very difficult chip from below the green and they could only manage a half which meant a lost match, 1 down to Hertfordshire. Chris Philips and Ian Waller lost a good match to Kent with 3 holes remaining. Tikki Hadjionaou (Maylands) and Chris Rate (Langdon Hills) lost to a strong Hertfordshire pair with 2 holes remaining. Mike Copping and Clive Pemberton put our first points on the board for the afternoon beating Hertfordshire 5 up with 3 holes to go and the final pair of Chris Aukett and Mark Stones were 1 down with one to play but managed to halve with Middlesex by winning the 18th hole. So the final result – Hertfordshire 1st 7 points, Kent 2nd 5 points, Essex joint 3rd 4 points Middlesex joint 3rd 4 points

U18 TEAM SE Group Junior Foursomes This competition historically was played over two days but for cost purposes it was agreed to be played, for the first time on one day over 36 holes. The venue was Crondon Park which was presented in first class order, playing off the black tees much to the delight of the competitors, giving them the opportunity to play one of the longest holes in the country. The weather was fine with a slight breeze. Eight counties from the South East region took part, including Essex. Essex were unable to field their normal team due to holidays & American Colleges starting their terms in August. This at least gave us the opportunity of playing boys from the U16 squad, who we hope will figure next year. The first pairing to tee off were Callum Hilton & Ashdon Brown, who whilst solid off the tee, seemed to have issues in & around the green, which for this pairing was unusual. They recorded a gross 85.This was soon followed by the pairings of Will Percival & Alfie Buttle who were unable to find their true form following on from their win at the Essex Boys Foursomes. They recorded a gross of 89. Our last pairing of Ben Rendell & Josh Read, who seemed at one with each others game, chatting & laughing, their way round, recorded the best round for Essex of 77, placing them individually 7th after the morning round, with Essex tied 7th. - 46 -

In the afternoon we had pretty much the same as we had in the morning, with the exception of Callum Hilton & Ashdon Brown who came in with a 77 an 8 shot improvement over the morning round. Ben Rendell & Josh Read again played steadily, recording a 78, giving them a combined total of155 & 8th place overall. Essex finished 8th overall with a combined total of 492, 44 shots behind the winners Sussex on 448. Hampshire the county who won the Boys Regional Qualifier and go on to represent the region in the final, were 2nd on 461. 3rd were Suffolk on 467.

U16 TEAM U16 v Surrey & Sussex Having tasted defeat away against Kent and Surrey in their last league match the Essex U16 youngsters had revenge in their minds. They played their home match on 14 August at Stapleford Abbotts against the very strong combination of Sussex and Surrey. The weather was dry and overcast with a prediction of rain later, but with little wind it was an ideal day for golf. Traditionally defeating Sussex and Surrey has been a tough task, so achieving success against the pair of them on the same day would be an even bigger achievement. But this is exactly what the team did with particularly strong performances coming from the middle order of Arron Edwards Hill, Callum Hensby, Curtis Knipes and Harry Moncur, each of whom who won both their matches, as indeed did Jack Charlton and Joshua Read who continues to be undefeated in his league encounters this season. Of particular note were the eagles of Joshua, Harry Moncur and Cai James at the par five 7th hole. The Sussex and Surrey teams were closely matched, but on this occasion no match for the Essex lads who played exceptionally well. U16 v Norfolk On Friday 21 August the Essex under16 team travelled to Bawburgh Golf Club near Norwich for their annual encounter with their Norfolk counterparts, where they were again blessed with good golfing weather and a course to match. A number of the team tasted a home defeat at the hands of Norwich last year, so were understandably anxious to reverse that result. The morning foursomes were very much “even Stephen” finishing 5-5, with Jack Charlton and Liam Francis achieving the only decisive result.The afternoon singles continued in a similar “nip and tuck” vein, but as in their previous match the Essex middle and late order proved to be too strong for their opponents who on this occasion were overwhelmed. The final outcome being an emphatic victory for Essex 21 points to 9. For a number of players this was their last u 16 appearance as unfortunately our final match in September clashes with National Regional coaching trials and the Youth Shield Final. My thanks go to all those boys who will be missing and in particular captain Ben Rendell who ably led his team with notable success. As always our thanks also go to the host club Bawburgh Golf Club for their hospitality and presenting the course in excellent condition and to the Norfolk team for playing the match. - 47 -

U14 TEAM U14 v Suffolk On a bright sunny day the U14’s entertained Suffolk at Harwich & Dovercourt GC. The 10 man team played foursomes in the morning going down 4-1, however all of the losses were by the one hole, our win was secured by Alex Martine (Chelmsford) and fellow club member James Holt 2up. In the afternoon singles we went down 4.5 to 5.5 with two of the losses going to the 18th hole. Carter Rowe lost his match even though he had 3 birdies, one of these on a par 5 was nearly an eagle with his third shot hitting the flagstick and finishing close for a tap in. Sam Oakes ( Romford ) also lost 2&1 after some good golf by both players. However it was at the back of the field where we started to shine, proving the County’s strength in depth, winning 4 of the last 5 matches, with fine wins for Alex Martine (Chelmsford) 3&2, Kieran Gravely (Boyce Hill) 4&2 finally Jake Wells (Frinton)and James Claydon (Boyce Hill) both 3&2 Debute boy James Holt (Chelmsford) halved his match after falling foul of a simple error, he was asked to move his marker and then forgot to replace it before putting and was subsequently ‘called’ unshaken James managed to hold it together over the last three holes for a very creditable half, lesson learnt never again James.

Keith Bass Trophy It was the turn of Essex to host this quadrangle competition at Colne Valley Golf Club played between Bedfordshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk for the Keith Bass Trophy. The competition is a 27 hole stroke play event with a gross and a nett score winner with a team event running alongside. The weather was not very kind to the players as it rained all day, yes all day in August, however this did not deter some good golf being played by members of all Counties in particular Suffolk who won the team event with a total 668.5 points from second place Essex 698.5 points. Habebal Islam (Ipswich) representing Suffolk had the best gross score of 106 which on the day was excellent golf. Essex best gross came from Harvey Payne (Chelmsford)115. In the nett/handicap event Max Moreton (Bentley) recorded a 104.5 off his 13 handicap to win the trophy. Other notable Essex scores in this section came from Josh Steele (Stock Brook Manor)108.5 from his 13 handicap and again Harvey Payne 107.5 playing off 5. Considering the continuous rain the course was in superb condition and held up well, our thanks must go to the green staff and management for doing such a good job. - 48 -

U12 TEAM U12 v Surrey On a beautiful summer’s day at Royal Epping Golf club, the Annual 16 boy team event between Essex and Surrey was held and was witnessed by a large spectator presence. The standard of golf was exceptional with both sides managing to have single figure handicappers in their sides. Having come close to beating Surrey last year, expectations were high amongst the Essex boys of recording their first win over their rivals - The format was Four-Ball Better Ball with 1 point for winning the front 9, 1 point for the back 9 and 2 points for the overall victory. Unfortunately, despite confidence being strong going into the match, Surrey were much too strong on the day (28.5 to 3.5 points) although it must be said all of the matches were extremely close with only the odd hole difference between the sides. A fantastic day had by all. England Junior Club Championships 2015 Following their success winning The Faldo Wedge earlier this season a teenage trio from Playgolf Colchester represented Essex in the England Junior Club Championship at Frilford Heath in Oxfordshire over two days of 10th – 11th August. The team of Junior Captain Joe Cosgrove, Edward Quilty and Jack Moutell amassed 147 points over 36 holes with the best two scores counting in each round.The team recovered well from a nervous start in day one, returning the top team score of 84 points in day two resulting in an overall 13th position. Jack Moutell (playing handicap 9) lead the teams recovery carding an impressive 43 points on day two with Edward Quilty coming in with the second score needed of 41. The boys all thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the opportunity of representing their County, playing three days on a beautifully presented course in a national event.

Very much the same here upon the completion of the Quarter Final matches with victories of no less than 3 match points being carded. We are clearly far from the end of the 2015 competition, and yet I was so pleased this week to have received my first entrant for the 2016 competition! olf Coaching in my opinion can become overcomplicated and without going into details surrounding attentional focus and how people learn, which incidentally is only just becoming more clearly understood. I was privileged to listen to the leader in motor skill acquisition who is based in the USA with some extremely interesting findings. This article aims to make a change without focusing upon the body movement just a specific task. When a golfer arrives for their lesson, their ultimate dream is to play more “consistently” which is the golden nugget in golf which I am sure you will agree? But, how realistic is this and how attainable is this C word? I receive as many smiles from my clients when they strike the ball from the centre of the clubface with the comment “That felt so easy, it did not feel as if I hit the ball” One of my main objectives … producing a soft

feel with a nice divot with achieving maximum distance. Here is one of my favourite drills which you can take to the range for FREE!!

• Place the ball approx. 5-6” in front of your clean towel • Using a 7 iron hit the ball without moving the towel on the downswing • The aim is to see divot starting level with the front of the ball, rather than well behind the ball producing a “heavy” shot or alternatively with no divot (neither are conducive for wet winter golf or cold frosty mornings!) Favourite golf course you have ever played? Recently had chance to play Crail (7th oldest in the world) great layout and fantastic views. But the new course at St andrews is very special. Links is my favourite layout. Best golfing tip you have ever received? A good swing can be built around a solid set up, my coach (Marcus Radmore) changed my grip a few seasons ago and transformed my game in all aspects. I owe him a few drinks for that! The golfer you admire most? Justin Rose – for the way he carried himself at the start of his career to now being one of the best in the world, great role model for young golfers and aspiring pro’s. Most embarrassing golfing moment? There’s been a few, but the worst was trying to hit the ball so hard on the first tee I nearly missed it and it went 3 foot, in front of my team captain! Great first impression. Which 3 other people would be in your favourite fourball? My dad and then Jack Nicklaus and Bobby Jones, would love to have seen how they played the game in their hay day. Best round of golf ever? My lowest was 63 with a few friends but my best is yet to come ... St Andrews old course next April with my dad, nothing will get close to that. How long have you been playing golf? Started playing when I was 8 and turned pro when I was 19, 7 years ago. What is your favourite meal. Anything Italian good for golf, not so good for the waist line! What career would you have chosen if not a golf pro? My heart was set on golf from a young age but pretty sure it would still be something in sport or maybe the forces, never been that great at a desk job.

Woodford Shows Golfing World How To Party

ight golfers who attended the Centenary celebrations marking the formation of Woodford Golf Club in Epping Forest in 1890 survived to attend the 125th anniversary gala dinner and dance at the RAC Club in Pall Mall, Westminster, last month. (August) They were John Peters the 1990 captain and now a director of England Golf, Jim Coker, who arranged the 1990 events and is the only member with a course feature named after him – Coker’s ridge, which runs across the width of the 6th fairway – President Roy Webb, Steve Strum, Peter Willett, Mark Bonham, Nick Rowe and Maureen Hamilton. Maureen has been Lady Captain and the rest of the men club captains in recent years. The dinner-dance was a roaring success with Captain Terry Chisholm and his wife Coral receiving a standing ovation as members and guests greeted their formal entry into the Mountbatten Room following a champagne reception. All the 140 guests received an historic

wine glass engraved with the club crest and the legend “125 years." Woodford is the second oldest golf club in the Essex Golf Union after Royal Epping, which was established in 1888. Mike Hart, the Essex GU President, presented Captain Chisholm with a commemorative trophy for the club. After the toasts, the dancing to the Accolade trio was frenetic. The dinner was the climax to a week of anniversary competitions (Aug 22-29). It got off to a splendid sunny start when crafty carpenter Les Curtis captured the men’s 125 Trophy. He shunned his usual beers the night before in favour of soft drinks in order to have a clear head for the oneoff event. His abstinence paid off as the 18handicapper scored 41 stableford points to overcome a big field. All sections of the club – men, ladies and seniors – were involved in a 125 Mixed Texas Scramble over nine evening holes with the team of Alan Gibbons, Anna Maris Beecroft and Neil

Robinson winning and collecting unique glass trophies after scoring 27.2 off 10% of their combined handicaps. Runners-up were Tony Murray, Helen Leggett and Alan Pickett on 27.7. Although this was an event especially devised for the 125 anniversary, it was so successful that it may become part of the competition calendar in the future. Heavy rain and blustery winds did not deter members going out in the 125 Seniors’ Competition with teams of three competing in a stableford event with five “joker” holes, each doubling the combined point’s total of the best two players. This brought about some high scoring by teams comprising one low, one mid and one high handicapper. Mickey Watkins, John Mansfield and Ray Jones each collected one-off glass mementoes when they came in with 109 points, a remarkable score in atrocious conditions. Runners-up were Tom Steed, Julian Greatrex and David Howells on 97 points. Mansfield also won the two-shot nearest the pin prize on the 355-yard Brambles hole 15. The women’s 125 stableford competition ended in a tight finish. It was won by Christina Spencer, who prevailed over Lady Captain Helen Leggett after a count-back. Both scored 29 points.

his mixed competition was played on bank holiday Monday with typical bank holiday weather. With all the competitors dressed in their best waterproof clothing and colourfull umbrellas to boot, the competition started in pouring rain. Lady Captain Sarah Mann and her partner Mike Martin (19) came in with a respectful 32 stableford point, followed in third place by Nancy Seabrook and Peter Gee (18) with 35 points losing on count back to the second-place pairing of Ann Martin and Peter Ivey (19) on the same score. However, winners and holders of the prestigious Butler Cup were Anne Abbs and Paul Raymond (31) with a magnificent putting display on the wet greens with 37 points.

David Rogers (6) was the scratch prize winner today with a gross 74 two shots over the course par of 72. Four players returned nett 73s. John Mayle (14), Steve Harris (19), club captain Roger Hyman (19) and Peter Dunnett. Danny Murtagh (14) carded a nett 72, followed by Alan Garnett (10) with a nett 71, just outside the main prizes was Rob Kilgour (11) with a credible 69. Third place on count back went to John Rogers (13) with a nett 68 only to be beaten by his son David (6) on the same score with 34 on his back 9 holes, 1st place and winner of the Ameeco Cup for 2015 is Andrew Gilbert (19) with a nett 67. Birdie balls were won by Jack Garnett and Billy Coe on the 4th, Danny Murtagh and John Rogers on the 8th and Alan Garnett on the 16th.

The match proved interesting with Captain Middleton and his partner Alf Smith winning 4&3, Mick Curwood & Brian Viercant winning 2&1,ViceCaptain Tony Burnside & Malcolm Pitcher lost

4&3, Rick Hale & Doug Nichols lost 3&2, Brian Clark & John Kemp lost one down, Bill Highstead & Peter Wiggins won 2&1, John Crick & Bill Clarke lost 5&3 and in the final match Robert Gillespie & Derek Woodrow won 4&3. Following a good fish and chips lunch it was announced that the match was an honourable draw.

Rendell who is at school in Ipswich has been a Junior Member of the Clacton club for the past eight years, having been trained by the club’s professional staff Rendell has progressed into a fine young golfer with a handicap of two.

lacton-on-Sea Golf Club’s Lady Captain Julia Hewett welcomed Lady Captain Linda Burrows and her team from Harwich & Dovercourt Golf Club to the Clacton Club for the home leg of the annual Barton-Smith Trophy. The Trophy was presented to the two Clubs by Mrs P H Barton (Clacton) & Mrs E Smith (Harwich) for an annual match, now in its 54th year. Clacton Captain Julia Hewett said to her team that Harwich are always strong opposition and having won 4 matches to 3 matches at Harwich, her team needed to play well. Harwich did prove to be strong opposition and the fish & chips lunch tasted even better when Harwich Captain presented the shield to Clacton Captain Julia and announced that the result of the 2015 matches was 8 matches to 6 matches win for Clacton.

lacton-on-Sea Golf Club held its “Junior Club Championship,” on Thursday. This 36 hole event was won by Past Junior Captain and now Essex County under 16 Team Captain Ben Rendell, who returned gross, scores of 71-77 for a 36 hole total of 148. The winner of the “Gold Division” was Riley Faulkner with 74-78 =152, in the “Silver Division,” the winner was Chloe Simper with 115-110-225 and the winner of the best nett score was Josh Bethell with a total nett score of 144. George Whitbread Crowned Champion at Colchester Golf Club

G

eorge Whitbread completed a remarkable triple as he has now won the Club Championship three years in succession. Whitbread, who left for Junior College in the U.S.A. on a golf scholarship shortly after the event, this unique three-time victory was done in some style. However, it was Jonathan Gilbert who had set the pace after Saturday’s first round with a par equalling round of 70. Whitbread’s first round of 71 put him in second place at the half way stage of this two-day event. Brendan Booth a previous multiple winner of the championship was laying one shot off Whitbread along with Gary Driver who also had a 72. The stage was perfectly set for the final round on Sunday. However, both Gilbert and Driver drifted away and whilst Booth put in a handicap equalling round of 75, it all left the boards free for Whitbread to repeat his performance and shoot another one over par 71 to take the championship by a surprising five shots. A fitting send-off for

Whitbread who will now pursue the next part of his golfing career in the States. Second place went to Ben David, who whilst equalling Whitbread’s 71 in the afternoon had a first round of 76. Jason Nicholls followed up his Saturday 75 with an impressive 72 to take third place, Booth’s 75 after his earlier 72 secured him fourth with a two-shot margin over the rest of the field. All three players returned totals of 147 and were placed after a countback.

Trophy Win For Bob B

ob Bloomfield won the Millennium Trophy at Colchester Golf Club. The Trophy caps an extravaganza of golf with competitions for members and their guests being played with sponsorship every day during the annual Millennium Week. Bloomfield, playing off a twelve handicap, returned 42 points but only clung onto the win by his finger-tips as Jo Mager (19) returned the same score, and she lost out only after the countback. Steve Moore (17) and Richard Watts (13) took third and fourth places with 40 points and there were five players returning 38 points. In fifth spot, was Mark Hills (17) followed by Parma Ellis (17) with Harry Hills (8), Jason Nicholls (1) and Steve Sharman (12).
