ESSEX GOLFER MAGAZINE - SERVING THE GOLFERS OF ESSEX SINCE 1996
TEE OFF
The incident involving Tiger Woods at The Masters, where an infringement of The Rules of Golf cost him a two shot penalty, illustrates how complicated these Rules can be. And don't forget, we amateurs are expected to apply them to ourselves. We are, in effect, our own referees. It can be problematical as the following, genuine example proves. Playing in a Summer Singles competition, two club members reached the first green. The player furthest away putts first. His opponent strolls over towards the pin. A great putt hits the pin and goes in the hole. "I claim the hole because you hit the pin." Says the opponent. The putter indignantly shouts that he should have removed the pin as he was attending it. “But you never asked me to attend the pin!" claims the opponent. You do have to ask for the pin to be attended. It's in The Rules. But surely in the spirit of the game, this was unsportsmanlike behaviour. Both players suspended the match and returned to the clubhouse for a Ruling. It was determined that a player is deemed to be attending the pin if they are within two arm lengths of it. Both players disagreed with the other about how far from the pin the opponent was standing. The match was scratched and I don't believe they ever played golf together again. It's all too easy to lose friends in our world today. Please don't fall, out over The Rules of Golf.

England team triumph for Essex teenagers Essex teenagers Dulcie Sverdloff and Sophie Madden won the international team event for England at the Irish U18 open stroke play championship. They were two shots clear of Ireland A in the team competition, which was played over the first two rounds of the 54-hole championship at Roganstown. Their achievement was all the more notable because they played in a team of two which meant both their scores counted in each round. Their main rivals were in teams of three and were able to discard one score each round. Both Dulcie and Sophie went on to be among four players tied for second place in the individual event, two shots behind Ireland’s Olivia Mehaffey. Dulcie claimed the silver pendant awarded to the runner-up on countback. Dulcie, 18, from Garon Park, is the English schools’ champion and the 2012 winner of the British Colleges Sport national title. Sophie, 16, from West Essex, is the English U15 champion and was runner-up at the Scottish U16 championship earlier this month. She trains with England Golf’s Select East squad.

Swing Plane Swing plane is one of the most important key elements to a great repeatable and accurate swing, but what is it and why is it so important? When we look at the swing from face on, we see a circular pattern with the club moving up and around our bodies, now if we stand and look from down the target line that circle lays at what we call an inclined plane. You can see this in picture 1 where I have placed an alignment stick in the ground to 10

You will hear some variables at which angle we set this plane; my preference is the dynamic plane which is the line the shaft sits on at impact whilst the force is being applied. Other coaches will use the static shaft plane at 3 address; they are not wrong, it's their preference. But suffice to say the plane you use is a reference for the plane in the swing. In the sequence of pictures there are six reference points to check your plane. Observe how the shaft stays relevant and in balance to the

11th Annual Mighty Masters, Epping Golf Club 4th April 2013 Free golf day for novice juniors and their parents.
“Success plucked from the very jaws of failure!” Every year, Epping Golf Club holds an event to introduce junior beginners without CONGU handicaps and their parents to golf. The event is sponsored by Daniel Robinson and son who provide the prizes and organiser tents, by Epping Forest District Council who provide funds to pay towards the golf tuition and the equipment and Essex Golf Union which take care of the scoring and results. The terrible weather this year saw Robinsons Seamus Settlefield and Golf Mickey holding the Mighty Masters Trophy with Arun on the right. Club Manager Neil Sjoberg discussing the event with some concern: with only a week to go just 15 people had registered! We decided to limit the size of the event by not using tents and reducing the number of prizes. The next day the sun shone and the registrations swelled to 44. However, on the day we saw horizontal snow and freezing temperatures! Despite this 66 youngsters and about 40 parents turned up, Epping's Warren Sargeant and 7 other golf pros representing 5 other clubs were in attendance giving free lessons to one and all. Youngsters opted for 3, 6 or 9 holes and many had to be driven back indoors to warm up after only a couple of holes. After a short spell in Epping’s cosy clubhouse with open log fire without exception they all asked to go out again and complete their round. Despite the weather, this was the best Mighty Masters yet! The enthusiasm was electric. One seasoned golf pro said, “ I’ve never been to Mighty Masters before but for all my years in golf, I’ve never seen golf enthusiasm like this-It’s amazing –thank you so much!” Through the blizzards, EGUs Past President Arthur Harrison, President John Peters and David Edwards plodded on working out the highly complex prize list. At the end of it all Loughton GC Golfer Mickey Charlton emerged victorious with Epping’s Arun Khudhail a close runner up.

Callaway Unleash X Hot 3Deep Fairway Wood Callaway Golf announces the launch of the X HOT 3Deep Fairway Wood, which made its official Tour debut at the Shell Houston Open in both Phil Mickelson’s and Ryo Ishikawa’s bag. The X Hot 3Deep was designed for the Tour’s big hitters and for players seeking a very low-spinning 3-wood. It provides an excellent option on holes where taking a driver may lead to trouble, or on short par 4′s where playing for position is key. It features a noticeably deeper face making it 25cc larger than the more shallow-faced X Hot Pro model. Callaway www.callawaygolf.com

Duca del Cosma Shoes come to the U.K When South African Richard Sterne won February’s Joburg Open, it wasn’t just his impressive stroke-play that turned heads – people were also quite taken with his footwear. For the 31-year-old, Pretoria-born, European Tour star was sporting a dashing pair of spikeless ‘Dandy You’ Duca del Cosma golf shoes – and while the Germany-based, Italian brand wouldn’t claim credit for Sterne’s success, it has helped in his renaissance. The current European Tour Race to Dubai leader has endured serious back problems for nearly two years, but his recovery has been aided by the comfort and optimum stability offered by his Duca del Cosma shoes. GT LAW JUNIOR GOLF TOUR The first of this year’s GT Law junior golf tour event was staged at Channels golf club on the 8th of April. It was the biggest field so far with some new players participating from Garon Park golf club where the tour will be visiting later in the year. Channels was in great condition considering the hard winter and late spring; thank you to them once again for their support in hosting a GT Law tour event. All the players had a great time with some fine examples of fantastic sportsmanship and skill, which is great to see. The players play a course designed in length for their age group so no handicaps are required just a lot of enthusiasm to play. Pictured are our winners from the first event well done to them and all their fellow competitors.

Largest Junior Golf Event in UK Returns to Stoke by Nayland On 9th April, Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa once again hosted the biggest Junior Golf Open in the country. There were 134 talented competitors who took on the two championship courses, testing their skills against undulating hills, bouts of inclement weather and, of course, each other. While pride was certainly a major consideration for these young golfers, they were also playing for a £2,500 prize table in equipment and clothing sponsored by Cobra Puma Golf. The junior golfers, who ranged from 12 to 18 years old, played 18 holes on the Gainsborough Course in the morning and 18 holes on the Constable Course in the afternoon. Of the 134 competitors present on the day, seven are students of the prestigious Lee Westwood Golf School, which is based at Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa. The winners of the competition were a mixture of home-grown talent and talent from slightly farther afield. George Tunbridge of Bentley Golf Club was the winner of the Boys’ title, while local boy Sam O’Brien (from Stoke by Nayland) came in a close second. In the Girls’ competition, Alice Barlow of nearby Newton Green GC beat Ashleigh Greenham to the number one spot in a nail-bitingly close finish.
George Tunbridge of Bentley Golf Club
Stoke by Nayland Golf Club Secretary Adrian Bullock said: “We are delighted to have had such a fantastic turnout yet again this year – the event is still the biggest 36hole junior competition in the country. Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa has always been very keen and active in nurturing young golfing talent. We welcome any event that encourages young people to make golf a part of their future.” The results:

www.bodysenseukltd.co.uk Have the edge and calm your nerves! Like me, were you completely gripped by the recent Masters and seeing Adam Scott ultimately crowned after his devastating and surprising pipped-at-the-post disappointment at the Open? Tweets of drinks on you, and pats on the back were well deserved. What a result for the young Australian and all credit to Angel Cabrera for his sportsmanship. So, how do they keep their cool? Practice makes perfect as they say, but planning planning planning is more to the point. As you prepare for your match, call up and check what is available to eat at the venue and be prepared to take items, including cereal bars, fruit, drinks, packs of almonds/nut selection and the infamous jelly babies/jelly beans- they all need to be packed! Check what is served, and whether it is what you would normally consume. Golf is both a physical and psychological game. Get the physical right and the psychology should follow. Ensuring you're both hydrated and have the correct fuels before you tee off is definitely a firm way of avoiding unwanted jitters at forthcoming tournaments. Likewise consider either a B 50 Complex or PP85 (potassium phosphates) tissue salts, available from Nutri 0207 436 5122 to feel cool calm and collected and achieve your tournament potential! Clacton’s captain drive in Last month, Clacton Golf Club was full with members keen to observe the Captains Drive in. The weather was cold with snow on the course; a small area of grass was cleared to enable William John McGrath, the One hundred & twenty first Captain of Clactonon-Sea Golf Club, to drive into office and the lad from Glasgow did not disappoint with a magnificent drive that was measured at 164 yards. A sweepstake to guess the Captains drive distance was held by the members. The winning distance was guessed correctly by Past Captain Robert Gillespie and Past Captain Steve Scott.

Where you hit the ball on the driver face really does matter. As you are probably aware from some of my previous articles, I'm not a great fan of some of the marketing (or playing with words as I call it) that the golf industry offers. By this, I mean that often we are told a driver's face has either 'multiple' or 'huge' sweet spots that will lead to longer straighter drives. In my opinion, this is not strictly true due to the shape of the driver face. In the image on the right, you will notice how the face has a radius on it; this can vary depending on the model or manufacturer but in general not by very much. It's this radius on the face that makes it so important to strike the driver correctly; in fact, it's the shape of the face which gives us the Gear Effect that is found on drivers, most fairway woods and hybrids. Gear Effect is there to help us with slightly offcentre strikes. A ball struck slightly towards the toe of the driver will result in the ball curving right to left in flight. Strike the ball towards the heel of the club and the ball will curve to the right. Think of it like this, a heel strike on a driver with no Gear Effect will fly left whereas a driver that has a radius on the face will curve the ball back to the right -

well at least that's the theory! This is true even if face impact is tested on a swing robot, which has one of the most repeatable swings on the planet (apart from a customer who once told me they had never missed a fairway in their lives! - an off-centre hit will impart spin on the ball even if the swing was perfect. However, this is where it gets interesting. Many golfers associate a fade with a shorter distance tee shot. This can be the case, but it's not really to do with the shape of the shot. It's more to do with the area on the face where the ball was struck. Basically, the heel of the golf club (closest to the shaft) is the most 'dead' part of the face. Due to the construction of the face, there is hardly any 'trampoline effect' in this area so a heel strike has less ball speed, resulting in a shorter shot. Furthermore, a heel strike can impart more back spin on the ball, which leads to a higher weaker flight. Couple this with the reduction in ball speed and you have a very short drive. © 2013 Lee Porter Golf Solutions

Essex County Schools Golf Association Annual Handicap Championships Played at Bentley Golf Club At Bentley Golf Club on 25th April 81 students from 30 schools around the county came together to compete in the Schools Handicap championship this was a Stableford competition for students between 11-36 handicap. The course proved very challenging for some of the students of whom the youngest was only 10! The wind got up in the afternoon and the 18th was more than a test to reach in two. The scores were low and only 6 golfers achieved more than 36 points. Many thanks go to Bentley for hosting the event and the many helpers, teachers and golfers who contributed to the day’s excellent organisation. The student’s behaviour was exemplary both on and off the course and a credit to their schools. Winner was Jack Garnett, who scored 42pts off a handicap of 11, from Thurstable School. He showed excellent skills around the green and also achieved nearest the 36

pin, where a difďŹ cult pin placement meant only 5 people got on the green all day! The Runner UP was Callum Nicholls who as a Bentley colt knew his way around the course and shot an excellent 39pts off a handicap of 24. In the girls competition Ashley Chalmers, who is a very new golfer shot 39 points with runner up Ysobel Lush on 37 pts close on her heels. The team winners were Brentwood county High School with Callum Nicholls and Jacob Smith scoring 72 pts, 2 ahead of Coopers Coborn School. Pictures by Michael West

Gary’s Travel log - Cyprus Cyprus has been in the press a lot recently, so it was not without a little concern that we headed off to Aphrodite Hills with a group for our second golf holiday week of the spring season. However, we needn't have worried; the resort was excellent, very comfortable rooms, and good food. Although there are several fantastic restaurants within the complex, it was a little chilly at night, and they were closed so we had a choice of buffet, Italian or Cypriot and they were great. We played mostly at the Aphrodite Hills course, which is spectacularly built on either side of a large valley. There are some awesome shots over ravines with the crystal blue Mediterranean Sea beyond. One round was played at the Sir Nick Faldo designed Elia Course. Which in time is going to be a great course, but you need to play it a couple of times as many shots to the greens sit above you, but great fun. Our winners for the week were Cecil Wheatstone in the men's event and in the ladies, from Channels golf club Judy Dunbar. Can you recognise the wellknown Essex County President Elect, showing great style? Answers on a postcard please!

Essex County News by Frank Tomlin, Press Officer, Essex County Golf Union
We are back in action now that spring is here at last Despite spring being late to arrive, we have played all but one of the events in our April fixture list. The only “casualty” was the combined Under 16 and Under 18 boys team match against Suffolk scheduled for 4th April. Unfortunately, severe weather made the Felixstowe Ferry course unplayable. Highlights of the month of April are as follows; The Keating Trophy: This was won by Bobby Keeble of Abridge, who is our 2012 Amateur Champion and a member of the England Boys squad. The Keating Trophy is the first of the Order of Merit tournaments in our calendar. The qualifying rounds, 36 holes scratch strokeplay, were played at Frinton on 6th April. Bobby Keeble returned the lowest score of 144 gross. The top 16 from that field went forward to the 18 hole knockout matchplay stage played at Frinton on 13th and 14th April. The knockout matches were nearly all closely contested, some going to extra holes. Congratulations to Bobby Keeble, and also to Daniel Vaughan of Orsett who was the other finalist. Mitchel Sarling of Rochford Hundred (who is also in the England Boys squad) gave Bobby Keeble a serious challenge in the semi-final, the outcome not being decided until the 18th hole. The Berkhamstead Trophy: Congratulations to Gary Oliver of Hainault Forest who was in a three way tie for first place and lost to a birdie at the fourth extra hole. The Berkhamstead Trophy is a prestigious open competition contested by the country’s finest amateur golfers. Past winners include Luke Donald (1996) and Tom Lewis (2010), now both Tour professionals. To return an equal top score in a large field of players from all over the country is a marvellous achievement. Gary, who is a prominent member of our county team, described his feelings as “over the moon”; so he should be. STARTING ‘EM YOUNG: We are increasing our efforts to encourage young boys and girls to take up golf and develop an enthusiasm for the game. We want to provide opportunities for them not only develop their golfing skills but through

participation to discover that golf can be fun as well as being competitive in the nicest and friendliest possible way. We also want to provide a pathway to county and national stardom for the most talented.
For the Under 12s. Keith Mitchell, our County Junior Organiser, has introduced a new approach to coaching Essex youngsters. This was the main theme presented for discussion at the well attended Essex Junior Organisers meeting held at Chelmsford on 26th March. David Brooks, the lead county coach, chaired a session on the route to England representation, which is the background to this important new approach to developing Under 12 year old golfers. It was stressed that the route to represent England at amateur level is mainly via county golf representation. Accordingly, we have established five centres across the county where Under 12s can develop their game alongside others of a similar age and experience, under the guidance of our professional coaches. Each of these centres will serve up to 15 golf clubs. Each will provide 50 hours of supported golf to about 25 youngsters. Activity sessions will be based mainly on short game. There will be no charge for any of these sessions but we will be looking for a degree of commitment. We hope to identify talented individuals at an early age who can be developed and matured over the years to county representative level and perhaps go on to even greater achievements in golf. The five centres are at Frinton (Professional Scott Rushbridge), North Weald (Professional Paul Sullivan), Little Channels – formerly known as Regiment Way (Professionals Jack Cole and David March), Crowlands Heath (Professional Marcus Radmore) and Garon Park (Professionals Ben Jones and Gary Jacom). If there are any promising 8 to 12 year olds who would like to join this program, they should ask dad or mum to contact either Keith Mitchell (genie350@hotmail.co.uk) or the professional at your nearest centre. Three cheers for Keith Mitchell whose personal enthusiasm and commitment is driving this along.

For the Under 14s. Last year we introduced a six event Order of Merit for the Under 14s.This year we have renamed it the “Essex Junior Golf Tour (Under 14)” and it is now sponsored by the Norman Garon Trust. The first event of the year was played at Gosfield Lake on 11th April. There were some very impressive performances as the detailed report from Keith Mitchell, our county Junior Organiser describes.

On a very cold and windy day at Frinton Golf Club the Essex County team had the pleasure of playing the Essex PGA Professionals. This was a hard fought game, played in good spirit despite the appalling weather. The morning’s foursomes proved to be an outstanding performance from the county squad losing only 1 of the5 matches. Young Mitchel Sarling, having played in the U18’s tournament the day before, was called in at the last minute to cover for a late withdrawal, played exceptionally well with his partner Mark Stone winning 5 & 4. Other good results were from Matt Baker and George Evans winning 7 & 6 and Ben David and Reece Francis winning 5 & 4 The afternoon singles were played in even colder conditions with stronger winds. This did not seem to deter any of the players, with the professionals fighting back to gain early leads in most of the matches. After the first six matches had finished the score was three all. A strong push with wins by

& & & & & & & & & & & & & & The morning foursomes didn’t prove a success with & & & & & & & & & & & Essex losing the first& &three matches. Josh Hickling && & & & & & & & & & & & & & & & & & & Chris Grant halved their match and Zac Taylor & & & && & & & & & Jack Staines producing the only win by 3/1 so the & & && score from the morning was 3½ to 1½. We are M & & & not sure whether it was playing away or playing on a course that demanded control that produced the A.M. result but it can be said that a number of putts from within 5 / 6ft were missed and perhaps this was pivotal. In the afternoon the first 4 matches produced 3 ½ points with Dylan halving against a fellow England Regional Squad member. Ryan by his own admission won his match by rediscovering his focus. Excellent wins by Callum and Jack who at one stage were 3 & 2 holes down respectively. Essex lost the next 2 matches but the rest of the games were finely balanced with the possible result going to either side up to last hole. Chris who had never been

by a win for Scott Hudson (Braintree) U18 and U16 combined teamfollowed started their season 4 with a match for the Cheshunt Salver and after the morning foursomes nothing could separate the sides at 3 matches each. The afternoon started well for Essex with Mitchell Sarling (Rochford) beating his fellow England international Nick Ward 2&1 and this was followed by a win for Scott Hudson (Braintree) 4&3 and a half for Dan Garner (Romford). Unfortunately Essex had to wait until the ninth match for its next win with Sam O'Brien (Stoke by Nayland) quickly followed by Dylan Mahmut (Romford) both winning. In the end this was a comprehensive win for Hertfordshire 10.5 t0 7.5 with Essex only taking consolation that they were able to field some of the younger players as some

The field featured some boys whose golfing ambitions are already very high and whose record indicated that they should feature strongly in the leader boards, but it was a young and diminutive Joseph Defries (Warley Park) (21 handicap) who took the honours for the day by scoring six under his handicap and record a Stableford score of 42 points. His round was extremely steady and he recorded only two one pointers and a birdie. An impressive display for one new to the competition. Joseph was in the Under 13 section and took the prize for the Under 13 Handicap section. In second place at Under 13 were Callum Hensby( Stoke by Nayland) (14) and James Styles (Chigwell)(18) with 41 points each. The Under 14 section saw an impressive display from Alex English (Stoke by Nayland) (11 Handicap) who scored 41 points and recorded three birdies in his round at the 8th, 10th, and 17th.His round was good enough to take the Under 14 scratch prize with 30 points winning from Ben Rendell (Clacton) (6) on countback. Second place for the Under 14 Handicap went to Jack Charlton(Loughton) (16) with 40 points The girls section was won by Holly Haslam (Little Channels) (12) with 33 points who also won the Scratch prize with 21 points, Ysobel Lush (Langdon Hills) (36) took 2nd place in the Handicap section with 31 points whilst Harriet Lynch(Thorndon Park) (16) was second in the scratch with 22 points. Nearest the pin was won by Charlie Haddon (Romford)

Essex Junior Golf Tour (Under 14) Sponsored by the NORMAN GARON TRUST Played at Gosfield Lake - 11th April 2013 Rearranged from the previous week when the snow managed to interrupt proceedings, this event eventually began with a reduced field of 44 players owing to the change of date clashing with Junior Open to which some boys were already committed.
The next round of the competition is arranged for Sunday 5th May at Forrester Park. There is still time for new competitors to sign up by going to the Essex County Web Site and downloading the forms (www.essexgolfunion.org). A full record of all scores and standings is available on the Website. We are very grateful to Gosfield Lake for hosting the event, especially in rearranging it so quickly following the curtailment the week before. Keith Mitchell (Essex Golf Union - Junior Organiser)

Rehearsing The difference between practicing and rehearsing is that by rehearsing; you are trying to recreate the situations that you will be facing in the future, and preparing yourself to deal with these situations. If you have prepared for a situation, you will be calmer and more likely to be able to deal with it effectively when you are faced with it. Here are some different ways you could rehearse. Rehearse on the Practice area- Imagine yourself in the situation, you may be on the course at your upcoming round or tournament.Visualise the situation with the club you may need and give yourself an appropriate target and try to recreate different situations you will face. This may be a particular drive, iron shot or situation such as being tied for the lead coming down the last hole. This can also be done on the practice green such as making a 10-foot putt on the last to achieve your target. Also, you can work on any problem shots you have trouble dealing with. Rehearsing on the range to prepare for upcoming situations you will have to deal with. Mental rehearsal and playing what if? You don’t always have to be at the course to work on your game, and you can do a lot at home by visualising or imagining what you would like to happen. Find a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed and relax. You can run through the likely situations that you will face and see yourself dealing with them successfully. Don’t always assume that every situation will go to plan as things invariably won’t. You want to be prepared to deal with many different situations. Ask yourself what you would do in numerous situations? Such as double bogeying the first hole! How will you respond? Or what if you birdie the first four holes? How will you feel? Imagine how you will react and conduct yourself? Furthermore, prepare yourself for playing with different playing partners, formats and other situations you may face. Use past experiences and learn from how you dealt with them in the past and what you would do in the future. Rehearse on the Course- When you're playing practice rounds or when the course is quiet, you can put yourself in different situations that you are likely to face, or work on shots that you may have problems with. So when it comes to the round, you will have faced that situation previously. Give yourself tough shots and evaluate where you may miss a shot. Try some hard shots and ones that you have had trouble with in the past. Be careful not to upset the green keepers by playing numerous balls. I am suggesting you play one or two shots from these situations. Look for spots where you may have a shot depending on your tendencies. Many people will have a hole that they have problems with, so play the hole and find a solution to this by trying a different approach or club off the tee. 48

THE GOLF CENTRE EPPING Under new management PGA Professional Michael Porter has recently taken over the Epping golf range. “It is a very exciting time to take over the range as the site where we are based is going to be redeveloped within 18 months. Once complete we will have a newly built golf store and a fantastic clubhouse where our clients can sit and relax. I'm looking forward to making the golf centre a premier practice facility in Essex". I believe to create a good practice facility the basic fundamentals must be in place. These are good golf balls, mats and lighting. Slow Slow Quick Quick Slow!! Well now the golfing season is truly under way, with the first of the Women’s Majors the Kraft Nabisco, and of course the Masters having been completed. We were privileged to watch some of the most amazing putting skills under the most extreme pressure situations. I believe too many golfers concentrate solely on the line of the putt and not enough on the speed of the greens and pace of the stroke which influences distance control. Tension in the stroke is one of the most common faults inhibiting a smooth effective stroke. We will all be playing on quicker greens over the next few months so I would like to give you a few suggestions we can apply to help achieve a slow smooth putting stroke. • Grip pressure: Holding the handle too tightly can be caused by a putter grip which is worn or too thin. The trend over the past year has to play with a thicker grip to help reduce tension and excessive wrist action. Fig 1. Fig 1
The amount of “grip pressure” applied to the handle is hugely important especially on very quick greens or downhill putts. I recommend a grip pressure of between 4-5 on a scale of 1-10

• Forearm Tension: The forearms at address should be loose to facilitate a smooth and relaxed rhythmical movement of the shoulders in the stroke. • Stroke Speed: The pace or tempo of the stroke is vital when playing on quicker greens. When playing on Tour I used to slow down the tempo of my practice stroke, especially when under pressure aiming to replicate my actual stroke. It is imperative you do not decelerate too much through impact when working on tempo. A very simplistic verbal cue such as “tick tock” can help maintain your tempo or with the use of a metronome. • Putter pressure: At address I always rest the putter head lightly on the surface of the green as opposed to applying pressure “pushing” the putter head into the ground. This assists to create the smooth movement of the putter head in a slow and controlled fashion as opposed to a quick and jerky movement.
Hopefully this article has helped you to recognise when tension creeps into your putting stroke and provides some practical tips to overcome this. Copyright SBennettgolf

Arctic Blizzard 1 : Essex Captains 0 The Society of Essex Lady Captains, kicked off the new season with their annual fixture with the Society of Essex Men’s Captains at Upminster on April 4. This is a really popular event and everyone was looking forward to a great day both on and of the golf course. Sadly, the weather had other ideas, and the competition had to be truncated, with some groups only managing 5 holes before an arctic blizzard descended making the greens unplayable. Thanks to Upminster Golf Club for hosting the event and providing a delicious early meal for the chilly and disappointed captains. The Men’s Golf Society whose turn it was to organise the event this year will try to arrange a new event in September, so let’s hope the sun will be shining.
