Merry ChristMas and a happy new year to all our readers
ESSEX GOLFER MAGAZINE - SERVING THE GOLFERS OF ESSEX SINCE 1996
The Heart of Golf in Essex. www.essexgolfer.com
TEE OFF
As another golf season comes to a close its worth reflecting back over 2013. We had a much better year with the weather and that obviously had a knock on effect for the county's golf clubs. Most saw revenues increase, particularly those that offered all inclusive green fee packages. It seems golfers like knowing up front what their costs for the day will be. If that can include a green fee, meal and perhaps a pint, then so much the better. Bobby Keeble (Crowlands Heath) won the Champion of Champions tournament held at Woodhall Spa. A birdie at the final hole saw the England boy’s international score a level par total of 146 to win this prestigious event. Finally, a good few Essex golf clubs have changed hands this year. But in every case, the new owners have promised investment and improvements. So far, they all seem to be delivering, which will be good news for the future. We would like to take this opportunity to wish each and every reader the very best of seasonal greetings and hope you have a happy, healthy New Year. Norman Head
The course is set in 240 acres of beautiful parkland in the Essex countryside. The club has hosted the R & A Regional Open Qualifier for the last 5 years.

English Schools Golf Association www.englishschoolsgolf.org essex schools Championships It was a very wet weekend before the Schools Championships, and all were concerned that there might have to be a postponement as the course at The Rayleigh Club was extremely wet, however, things turned out ok and we were able to play all 18 holes. The field was particularly strong this year boasting no less than 15 students all under 18 with handicaps of between + and 2! Amongst the field of 73 students from 32 schools from around the county were four internationals caps. The weather was varied and during the round most had to contend with wind and rain but there were no complaints and nobody who didn't tough out the conditions by finishing the round, although a few umbrellas were loaned out! The scores were good considering the conditions and some even managed to play below their handicaps. The winners were Georgina Blackman of AngloEuropean School, Ingatestone with a gross 75, with Sophie Madden runner-up with a gross 78. Ashleigh Greenham and Paige Kemp will join them in selection for the team to play in the Eastern Region round. In the boy’s competition, Christopher Grant came in with an amazing four under round of 69 to carry home the trophy, which he has been trying to win for several years now, two shots behind him was Elliott Fullalove scoring a 71. Four other boys will join them and the girls at Letchworth in the next round in May. The team trophy was carried off for the second year in success by Southend Boys Grammer School who will represent Essex at the Nationals Schools team event at Woodhall Spa next summer. Well done to all who played and thanks to The Rayleigh Club for being such helpful and supportive hosts. 8

rose awarded honorary life Membership of the european tour Justin Rose has been awarded Honorary Life Membership of The European Tour in recognition of his magnificent US Open Championship victory in June. The Englishman, who held off Phil Mickelson and Jason Day to triumph at Merion Golf Club for his first Major title, was awarded the special accolade by European Tour Chief Executive George O’Grady at a press conference at the DP World Tour Championship, the final event of the 2013 Race to Dubai. “This really is an incredible honour,” said Rose, for a kid who started his career with 21 missed cuts, I guess this means an awful lot really. And the whole journey could not have been done without all the hard work of The European Tour. O’Grady heaped praise on Rose, who has won six times on The European Tour since he burst onto the scene at The Open Championship in 1998, where he won the silver medal aged 18. “When we have one of Europe’s own enjoying the season that Justin has had, and specifically winning the US Open Championship, we would be honoured if he would accept Honorary Membership of The European Tour and join a very illustrious band of Major Championship winners and others who have contributed hugely to the growth of The European Tour.” European Tour www.europeantour.com

pivot, balance and stability These are three of the fundamental cornerstones of the golf swing; they hold the swing in place both vertically and laterally. They also create the rotation that allows the club to move around its arc. This central movement of the swing works the shoulder hips and legs, in the correct sequence and posture to Picture 1. build a powerful swing. The drill I am about to show you is as old as the Ark, there is nothing revolutionary, but it is surprising how very often it is ignored in favour of more exciting things like leverage and plane, but if your Picture 2. balance and stability are not in place - inconsistent contacts will result. Interestingly enough many golfers seem to be more concerned with the 12
direction of the ball than the contact, but I feel this is the wrong way round , make great contact first then concern yourself where it’s going. pictures 1 and 2 show my posture and set Picture 3. up from both sides, I have used an alignment stick, but a golf club does just the same job. Notice how the angles at my knees and hips are set; I’m balanced where my weight is neither on the fronts nor backs of my feet, just Picture 4. central and my spine is bent in such a way that it appears my chest is looking at the ball. pictures 3 and 4 the top of my backswing from both sides - firstly, observe how my shoulders have rotated at the same angle as my spine. Therefore, my upper body is still held over the ball. Notice how my lower body

has barely moved, resisting the rotation of the shoulders, and I have remained centred with no change of height. pictures 5 and 6 Impact the moment of truth, I have got here through the sequence of my hips rotating back to impact and beyond, this then pulls my shoulders and knees which in turn pull the arms, and lastly, if I was holding one -the club. But notice how I have retained my height and centre. Our final picture 7 shows a balanced finish to the swing. The ball has long gone, however, it is good practice for consistency to finish balanced and in the same place each time. it only remains for me to wish you all a merry Christmas and a great golfing new year Gary

James wins the Colchester Junior open Colchester’s Junior Open was the place where James Hedger of Braintree Golf Club chose to show his obvious talent. Shooting a gross 68, he won the competition with seeming ease. Like all good things it is better sampled slowly; however bogies on the first two holes were an interesting way to start. Hedger was still two over par on completing the first nine but a blistering four birdies on the back nine gave him a back half of just 30 shots and a two under finish. Although not featuring in the main prizes Ashley Greenham from west essex Golf Club, and last year’s overall winner of this competition, had four birdies in her last six holes to hand in a card of 72 gross which from her plus one handicap gave her a nett of 73! The best overall nett score in the boys section went to Colchester’s Ben Barber who from an 18 handicap returned a 65. Monika Solanki hainault James Hedger winner of Colchester's Golf Club returned a nett 71 Junior Open. to win the best nett for girls. Winners of the Under 18 Section The under 18 group was a full of the Junior Open house for Colchester Golf Club with George Whitbread (2) returning a nett 68 closely followed by Jamie Scott (9) with a 69 and in third spot this year’s junior Captain Tom Miller (4) with a nett 70. 14

Q.Favourite Course? A. I've a few; however, Shinnecock Hills and Royal St Georges are my favourites. Q.Best Golfing Tip Ever Received? A. Never attempt a shot that's outside of your capabilities. Q. Golfer I most admire? A. Got to be Jack Nicklaus, an outstanding player and a true gent. Q. Most embarrassing golfing moment? A. I was playing in a practice round in a national under 14's tournament in Coventry. I'd hit the ball in the trees, having found it and able to make a full swing. I played a full blooded shot out with a 5 wood. The ball hit a tree and I was looking long and hard to see where my ball went. Having waited a good 4 or 5 seconds, I couldn't see my ball, and then it promptly landed on my head. Out of the trees, I came with a few tears and a bump on the head for good measure! Q.Favourite holiday destination? A. West Coast Florida. Q.Best round of golf ever? A. My proudest achievement is the course record 62(-7), I shot at my old club Wanstead in 1990; it still stands as the course record. Q. Favourite Film? A.The Shawshank Redemption Q.Favourite Car? A. Ferrari Q.Favourite football team? A. West Ham (definitely not a glory hunter) Q.What career would you have chosen if not a golf pro? A. I really haven't a clue; it's all I ever wanted to do from the age of 13. Q. What is the best piece of Advice you would give to someone taking up Golf? A. It's important to take tuition throughout your golfing life, hence it's a must when first starting. Patience is vital and embrace the challenge of learning to play this great game. Make time to practice otherwise your progress will be slow. Golf tuition is available at North Weald Golf Club with Paul Sullivan for both members and non-members. Brentwood Golf Club, a new beginning Mike Seabrook of 'Seabrook Warehousing (Sponsors of The Jubilee Cup) has purchased the Golf course formerly known as weald park and then south weald The purchase was completed on 1st November 2013. The history of the course has been jaded for various reasons and so it was decided to rename it Brentwood Golf Club and give the fresh start this gem of a course deserved, Mike will honor and respect the history of the previously named clubs, acknowledging past Captains, Lady Captains, Presidents and competition winners. Mike has started to assemble his team to work at Brentwood Golf Club, the team will be headed up by Russell Phillips, Russell was previously employed by Woolston Manor as Sales and Marketing Manager, he has a wealth of golfing knowledge previously serving on the committee at Woolston Manor for 15 years. Head Green Keeper Keith Eastell has been at the club since it open 20 years ago, Keith will be assisted by Joe Tatam, also previously at Woolston Manor and Luke Raith, the green keeping staff will be increased in the spring of 2014. It is Mike and Russell’s plan to restore the course to it's former glory, an investment of over £300,000 has already been made in John Deere course equipment which includes a state of the art 'greens ironer' There are subtle changes being made to the course in both length and features, some holes will have new white tees added and there are plans to add some water features as well as major repair works carried out on the bunkers. When the club operated as South Weald the main clubhouse was closed, the clubhouse has been re-opened, it was also operating as a 'Pay & Play' course, Brentwood Golf Club will be a membership based club and will be affiliated to the Essex Golf Union, English Golf Union and the Ladies Golf Union. Pay and Play golf will be available at allocated times on both weekdays and weekends, we will encourage non-members to come and try out the course. Brentwood Golf Club is also planning to add a PGA Golf Professional, their aim is to appoint a current assistant PGA professional offering them the opportunity to progress. Plans are underway to extend and develop the current clubhouse. Brentwood Golf Club aim to a encourage 'younger' Golfers of both sexes with affordable membership prices for a variety of Golfers aged from 6 years up to 25 years old. Many golfers consider the course to be the best laid out of all the courses in the county. The Membership will commence on January 1st where we will be offering 15 months membership for the price of 12 months, our aim is to encourage past members to rejoin . This is a very exciting time for both new owners, past members and Essex golfers in general.

Belhus park GC win national Final The National Final of the Mitchell-thomson seniors Greensomes competition was played over Abbey Hill golf course on Tuesday 17th September. Batchwood Hall 'B', Belhus Park, Southsea and Temple Newsam had qualified for the final with four pairs of seniors representing each club. Scoring was solid and consistent from all four teams and the competition was very close. With one pair each from Southsea and Belhus Park to come in, Temple Newsam had a very respectable total of 138 points. Southsea needed 37 points to overtake this and the Belhus Park pair needed 39 -with the best score of the day at that point being 38 from the second Temple Newsam pair. Colin Bartram and Dave Betteridge of Southsea managed their target with 38 points. However, the final card of the day from dave saunders and Fred Keeling of Belhus Park had 3 straight birdies on the 13th to 15th holes for a 23 point back 9 and a top score of the day of 42 points. Congratulations then to Belhus Park on winning a very well fought and close contest. Thanks also go to Brian Cormack, a weather-resistant referee from England Golf, for some excellent refereeing and great patience in very wet conditions. Similar to the SLDR driver, each club combines a low and forward centre of gravity (CG) placement, a recent TaylorMade engineering feat wherein weight is re-located to the front of the head to promote faster ball speed, a higher launch angle and a lower spin-rate. TaylorMade research indicates the SLDR fairway to be the longest adjustable fairway wood in company history. TaylorMade Golf www.taylormadegolf.com 28

It seems our proposed trip to Aldeburgh is doomed. Our planned October Winter League coincided with the October storm and was the first casualty due to weather. The same week saw us going to Chigwell. Where many trees were lost in the storm, we had an excellent turnout of 25 teams and our event was very well supported by the Chigwell membership to whom we are very thankful. James Scade won the pro event with a -5 score of 66 and 2 behind were Steve Cipa and Jason Levermore on 68. In the team event James Scade with Martin Hicks, Chris Parle and Andrew Hicks won on count back form Rhys Piper and Andy Thomas, Dan Sellar and Jason Yentin Right- James Scade The Lady Vice President's Cup was held at Romford in horrid conditions but this didn't deter Mark Stokes and Elaine Cochrane from taking first place with an amazing 44 points (it was greensomes) and Paul Barham and Teri Benson were in 2nd place. Another casualty of the October storm was Purdis Heath which suffered quite badly with tree damage. Nonetheless, we had a great day there. Andy Pestell and Mark Baker won the pro event with -3 68 scores. Scott Rusbridge was in 3rd place with 69. In the team event Steve Hambling with Neil Howard, Don Cutmore and Gerry Callow with 88 points won on count back from Mark Talbott with Joe Ellis, Carl Neil and David Yang Our first Winter League of the year was at Channels. Mark Davis won with 69, followed by Mark Baker with 71. Right-Mark Davis Next was over the QE Bridge to Kent for a day out at The Wilderness. Mark Talbott clearly liked the course very much and stormed to victory with a round of 38 points (his round included 6 birdies) enough to take the Eddie Sadler Trophy. Chris Rate from Langdon Hills took The President's Cup with 37 points. Right- Mark Talbott Results from our Rochford Winter League, Toot Hill Pro/Am an the Christmas Fayre at Thorndon Park will be covered in the next issue. 30

Lee Porter, the PGA Professional attached to Hylands Golf Complex in Chelmsford, has been voted Clubmaker of the Year by the Golf Clubmakers Association in the UK. My equipment predictions For 2014 Another year nearly over and another deluge of new equipment so I thought I would take this opportunity to voice my predictions for 2014 - so, here we go... drivers: In a word LOFT! More than ever loft will be critical to a Golfers driver. Over the years, many Golfers have tried to use a driver with too little loft but now drivers have been designed to produce lower spin so if you don't initially launch the ball high enough it will hit the ground prematurely - resulting in a loss of distance. So, don't be an Ape! If you are the type of golfer who has only ever played a 9.5 degree driver you need to think again. In fact, many Tour Professionals are now playing more loft, many at 10.5 to 11.5 degrees. Roll back a few years and the same players were using 6 or 7 degree drivers! But what has actually changed? Well, the driver design for definite but the ball has also made a sneaky change. Golf balls spin less when more compression takes place - couple this with the driver wanting to spin less (backspin that is) and we end up needing more loft to launch the ball higher. There was a time when a 12 degree driver was considered either a ladies or senior’s driver - not any more! You will even begin to see speed pockets that have only been seen on fairways and hybrids in drivers! With regards to your new driver don't let your ego get in the way of good golf. Fairway woods: Fairway clubs have moved on massively over the last few years and I think will 34
The Heart of Golf in Essex. www.essexgolfer.com
continue to do so. Ingredients for a good fairway wood are simple, ball speed and loft. In fact for many Golfers there will come a point when they will have to question the need for driver. If you do keep an eye on the professional tours you will see more and more professionals hitting 3 wood off the tee more frequently - after all, it worked for Henrik Stenson. hybrids: Are certainly here to stay, but I do think there will be more 'driving iron' style clubs aimed at lower handicaps to offer a more traditional option. irons: Interesting! Basically, the newer iron designs offer more ball speed from offcentre strikes. Speed pockets, cut aways and variable face thickness all add to more forgiveness which, when you think about it, is no more than higher ball speed from off-centre strikes. In fact, according to data from Taylor Made, in the handicap bracket from five to twenty five 72% of iron shots are struck too low on the face, resulting in too lower launch and a loss of ball speed. Don't be surprised to see irons with bigger cavities in the longer irons and more traditional 'blade' style heads in the short irons as many better Golfers are struggling to keep their longer irons in the air which in turn destroys their yardage gapping between clubs. wedges: More bounce and sole options. Golfers are becoming wise for the need for wedges that suit their technique and game. Whether you are a digger (big divot) or a sweeper (no divot) you should play a wedge that suits you. Many companies are also offering more loft options to ensure that the yardage gaps are perfect. putters: If I'm honest there are not too many major advances in putter design. I am a fan of SeeMore putters as I think that the technology and alignment system work well but outside of that expect to see many old favourite models enjoy a 'tweak'. So, there you go my predictions for 2014 - let's see how many come true! Finally, I would like to thank everybody who has supported me over the last year and I wish you all a very Merry Christmas & Happy 2014. All the best, Lee. Zekia drives in at woodford GC Zekia Alasanjak strode on to the course in the guise of the 13th century Turkish sage Nasreddin Hoca complete with white turban, false beard and medieval garb as his attendants dished out Turkish "delights" to watching golfers, among them John Peters, President of the Essex Golf Union and a Woodford member. Then Turkish-Cypriot-born Zekia, the first foreignborn captain in Woodford's long history, unleashed a drive into office that went 89 yards using the ancient wooden-shafted club that spends the rest of the year hanging in pride of place above the club bar. Zekia, who plays off a handicap of 11, has been a Woodford member for 11 years and was awarded the MBE in 2000 for his services to the TurkishCypriot community.

Essex County News by Frank Tomlin, Press Officer, Essex County Golf Union
one Chapter Closes: another opens. In the November edition, County President John Peters recalled the highlights of a successful year for Essex County golf. Many of our players will look back with justified pride and satisfaction as they tuck into their Christmas dinner and a few days later raise a glass to welcome in the New Year. We and they look forward to 2014 with a spring in our step. Although we are now in the depths of winter, golf goes on. Coaching continues and our players are practicing in preparation for the 2014 program of matches and tournaments. winter elite CoaChinG This report is from County Junior Organiser Keith Mitchell. Coaching began at the end of November. This year ten boys have been selected from our regular coaching squad to receive a further five days coaching with David March at Little Channels. They are Oscar Yeomans (Chelmsford), Callum Pipe (Braintree), Ben Rendell (Clacton), Harry Noakes (Bentley), Alex English (Stoke-by-Nayland), Arron Edwards-Hill (The Warren), Joshua Reed (Three Rivers), Harry Moncur (Langdon Hills), Michael Gilbert (Woolston Manor/Chelmsford) and Cai James (Colchester). The purpose of these sessions is to prepare boys who we believe have an excellent chance of selection for the EGU SE Group Northern Region coaching squad in the near future. As only six boys are selected to join the Regional squad each year, the competition for places is intense, so coaching for our Winter Elite Group has to be appropriate if our boys are to succeed. To be selected for the Regional squad is a great honour. It puts the boys selected into the top 60 - 80 boys in the

Under 16 age group in England. Currently, four Essex boys are in the Regional squad. They are Jack Dyer (Rochford Hundred), Callum Hilton (The Warren), Dylan Mahmut (Romford) and Ryan Cox (Warley Park). The Winter Elite Coaching consists of reinforcing and developing the short game skills that are worked on during the summer and addressing aspects that the individual player designates as requiring extra help. Group sessions are held on fitness, diet and competition preparation but the main emphasis is on encouraging the players to identify and focus their practice on the specifics that will improve their individual skills. the annual General MeetinG. The AGM will be held on Thursday 6th February 2014 at Upminster Golf Club. We hope that all or most of our affiliated clubs will send representatives. The Officers and Directors of Essex Golf Union look forward to meeting you there and dining with you afterwards. Our thanks as always to Upminster Golf Club who support County Golf in so many ways including hosting the AGM year after year. We will have vacancies on the Board so if anyone out there would like to come forward and give some of his time to help administer County Golf, please don’t hesitate to seek election at the AGM. Details of how to be nominated can be obtained from the County Office. and Finally: We wish all readers of Essex Golfer a merry Christmas with your favourite brand of golf balls emerging from your Christmas Stockings, followed by a happy and successful new golfing year.

There are six County teams, each with a dedicated Team Manager they are the County, Colts, Seniors, U18, U16 and U14 teams. There is an U14 Junior golf Tour that is open to all Boys and Girls and Girls and in the near future there will be five Starter Centres that offer free coaching to all U12 Boys and Girls. The Player Development Coaching structure forms a pyramid, with larger groups at low ages reducing to smaller elite Squads up to the age of 18. With so much Amateur Golf activity in Essex throughout the season, County Officials can be very busy, through mid-week with Junior and Seniors Teams and at weekends with adult teams. Many of the County Officials are retired from full time employment, they mostly continue to play golf in between the County Golf Union schedule. Typically a Team Manager will spend time communicating with and monitoring progress of players in his Team’s age category, this role requires maintaining a data base of top players for that group within the County and selecting the best Team available for each inter-county match. County Official’s duties may include tournament registration, starters, rules officials, team selection, course rating assessment, representing the county at national level meetings and with other golfing or sporting bodies, attending various county committee meetings or simply being present at a County event. County Officials as volunteers can be occasionally over stretched during the peak summer season, but they are never out of pocket in performing these duties as all expenses are reimbursed. Throughout the winter months, the County Referees officiate at Rules Evenings that any affiliated club can book through the County Office, this may help their members improve their understanding of the Rules of Golf. The role of a volunteer County Official can be rewarding in many ways and for anyone who enjoys the game of golf and wishes to be involved at the highest level of the Amateur game, it is an ideal way of spending leisure time and putting something back into the game. It also offers an opportunity to socialise and learn more about the Rules and administration of our wonderful game. The large majority of Golf clubs in Essex, and nationally, choose to affiliate and currently there are 79 affiliated clubs in Essex with a total membership around 23,000.

This membership is slowly declining at just over 1% each year, which is happening nationally, not just in Essex. Men’s County Unions and Ladies County Associations are funded by club members, who pay an annual affiliation subscription as part of their annual membership fee. They also pay an additional subscription to England Golf the national body for amateur golf. Therefore declining membership is a serious threat to the current structure of County and National golf governance. At National level the administration of Amateur Golf has merged the Ladies Golf Association and Men’s Golf Union and County Golf Partnership under the single ‘England Golf’ banner. It is possibly a matter of time before similar mergers happen at County or Regional level. The majority of golf club members may have little or no awareness of the three separate County bodies, the Men’s County Union, the Ladies County Association and, the County Golf Partnership who are targeting new golfers at all ages. The PGA is visible to most golf enthusiasts through mass media and also being under one global brand, all be it PGA and LPGA. It could be argued that amateur golf should follow this example. This would result in sharing of resources and sharing the work load for the volunteer county officials and a more identifiable body. The biggest single threat to club golf as we know it is declining membership. Interestingly more people are playing golf, but choosing not to join a club, there are many reasons such as economics, social, time, image and appeal. Currently there are around one million unattached golfers in England compared to three quarters of a million club members all playing golf (regularly). England Golf are preparing to launch a ‘Strategic Plan for England Golf 2014 to 2017’. The centre piece of this plan is dealing with this threat of declining club membership. Amateur golf administration has seen few changes over many years, while the challenges facing the future of amateur golf as we know it are demanding change. As well as England Golf’s strategic plan, there are currently changes in the pipeline, mainly for the improvement of the game, such as introduction of a more flexible course rating system in line with USGA and relaxation of some of the old formalities of the game. Changes will only happen through club members Committees and owners getting involved with the current County Unions and Associations and making their voices heard. In Essex and nationally there is always need for some injection of new ideas and in our case this can only happen through evolution of the County Union Board of volunteer Directors. Vacancies on the Essex Golf Union board are filled by club nominated members, elected on to the Board at the AGM each year. There are currently vacancies. If you are interested please contact the County Secretary at the County Office for more information. Mike Hart President Elect Essex Golf Union November 2013

Gary’s Travel log Golf and Gourmet on the sun-drenched island of Madeira Our final golf adventure of the 2013 season was to the island of Madeira in the Atlantic; only three hours flying time from the UK - it is a great destination. There are many excellent hotels on the island mostly centred on the Capital Funchal, but as ever we choose to stay above Funchal at the Relais Chateaux hotel, Palheiro do Casa Velha. We have been hosting golf holidays there for some years now. The hotel itself was formally the Kings hunting lodge and has quite a colourful history, with dare I say some wild parties, now it is just a beautiful hotel with gardens, lawns and an old world service and charm, so hard to find these days. The dinning and wines in the hotel restaurant of an evening are exceptional. We book half board, which is a great way to eat some dishes that you might not otherwise choose, and the presentation and quality are magnificent. On the island, there are two courses, the more famous santa de serra high in the hills above the infamous airport runway. This has been used to host the Madeira Open on several occasions and there are three loops of 9. The problem being that there are two good loops and one bad, when you arrive to play; it always seems that the poor loop is always in play with one of the better loops, so consequently we have stopped going and now only play the palheiro course. It is on site to the hotel and a very pleasant parkland layout that everyone enjoys. There are some spectacular views from some of the holes and the clubhouse balcony looks directly down over Funchal and its harbour. A great place to sit and reflect on your round over the odd glass of wine, there is a comprehensive and not too expensive menu, the staff here are also friendly and welcoming. the winners of our holiday week were: in second place from Chelmsford, Janet everitt and the winner from Belfast, Maureen Martin well done to both of them. We now look forward to our winter and spring holiday’s tours and tuition weeks, all the details can be found on the garypikegolf.com web site, but if you would like to join us, please book early as they are all booking fast. www.bodysenseukltd.co.uk it takes guts to be healthy this Christmas….
Will you succumb to the pressure, as we all do… “Go, on just one more mince pie or that extra sneaky glass of mulled wine!” Pace yourself if you possibly can, and your spring golf will benefit. Either that or increase your DAL (Daily Active Living) to offset the over indulgence. Any activity is good. 2 – 3 hours after your Christmas meal aim to be ACTIVE. Why not jump on the Wii and play some golf, take a winter stroll or better still hit some balls! (If you’re allowed to escape on Christmas Day!) As soon as you can, get out there and get your activity level high again, speed your metabolism and hopefully get a little Vit D on your skin too. Also during the festive season you can offset or even cheat, to a certain extent, drink plenty of water between meals over Christmas to curb your appetite and consume the brilliant “Solgar Comfort Zone digestive enzymes” (Available at Bodysense Uk Ltd-01245 381181/ on-line) This great digestive tonic assists the breakdown of carbs, fats and proteins after large or late meals, thus preventing the Christmas build up, which would impede your golf performance. After all, don’t massively overdo it…. Think GOLF, not Grand Marnier brandy butter! 45
the 40th anniversary year is one to remember for stoke by nayland – and a fantastic offer to new members! Celebrating 40 years since the founders, Bill and devora peake opened the original stoke by nayland Golf Club, this well-established Club is still going from strength to strength. and as a special gesture to mark its 40th anniversary stoke by nayland Golf Club is offering an amazing reduction in the joining fee from £500 to the level that it was in 1973 – ie £35 !!! anyone joining the club between January 1st and March 31st 2014 will be able to take advantage of this incredible offer! They would also be joining a club offering TWO championship golf courses and outstanding golfing facilities such as a covered driving range, extensive short game practice area with excellent professional tuition on hand, welcoming clubhouse and brilliant member benefits offered throughout the hotel complex. The Club has also enjoyed a year of excellent acheivements for all areas of the membership. The Men’s, Ladies, Seniors and Junior teams have competed in many county and national events this year and achieved very impressive results. Having won the Essex Harris bowl in 2012, this year the Ladies team won 8 games in a row to reach the quarter finals of The Mail on Sunday National event. Over the past few years the Ladies have benefited from a winter coaching programme with the excellent teaching golf professionals at the club. Head professional, Roly Hitchcock says "This programme has been instigated by the ladies, and has covered all aspects of the game. The programme has helped to create social relationships and a great morale among the ladies’ section which an essential ingredient for any successful club". The Men's section has also been successful over the past two years. They were runners up in the Essex Premier competition, the Thornton Cup, in 2012 and this year they just lost on the 3rd play-off hole to eventual winners in the quarter final. The Norman Plumb team made it to the semi-final. This competition has probably been the most popular in the club, due to the mix of handicaps it caters for. The Senior Team also reached the semi-final of this competition, with many of the members of this team also representing the Veterans section which is very popular and plays at the club every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. This year the Juniors have got to the National Club final for England. It was the first time this young team reached the Essex Youth Shield knockout stages and they have just kept performing well ever since. Travelling around the country and playing many other golf courses has been a great experience for them, and one that will surely continue due to the youthful age of the squad and the wealth of activities that the committee has arranged for them. For more information on stoke by nayland Golf Club and the membership offer please contact adrian Bullock, the Golf secretary on 01206 265815 or email golfsecretary@stokebynayland.com and visit www.stokebynayland.com

yoxball Golf society help Barnardo’s Just four rounds of golf have boosted Barnardo’s funds to the tune of £1,062. The Redbridge-based Yoxball Golf Society chose the children’s charity at its 2013 beneficiary, and raised the funds from golf days at north weald, stock Brook Manor, warley park and woolston Manor. Peter Middleton, the society’s captain this year, said: “The committee and I are extremely grateful for the continued support of our members and their generosity in supporting my charity for the 2013 season.” Last year the 40-strong society – who like to stand out by wearing pink golf shirts – raised a similar amount for Motor Neurone Disease, and will be taking to the course in 2014 to raise funds for the Chigwell Riding Trust. How is your balance? Unfortunately many of us do not realise the importance that balance plays during a round of golf. As a Coach it is often easy to detect from a distance the quality of the shot by how effective the players balance is upon completion of the swing. A well “balanced swing and posture” is key to enable the body to produce maximum power in a controlled sequence of movement. An average club golfers 6 iron club head speed is in the region of 55 mph- 78 mph. If our balance is not correctly positioned at address we will have to make compensations during the swing causing inconsistencies and off centred strikes. Balance from a medical perspective can often deteriorate through our natural ageing process but also affected by a range of neurological disorders or other conditions. We can assist and manage our balance with some simplistic exercises to aid the neurological connections between our brain, ears and eyes, these can be carried out as a stand alone programme or within an exercise action plan. Set up position: It is favourable to have the weight positioned on the balls of our feet for a standard flat lie. This distribution is altered constantly during a round of golf for awkward and sloping lies. Many of us do not have an awareness of our weight distribution so please try this short drill to assist the feeling. 1. Set up and shift the majority of your weight towards your toes Fig 1 2. From this position rock backwards gently without falling over! Moving your weight to your heels Fig 2 3. Slowly feel the weight move towards the centre of both of your feet, you should feel steady and “rock” solid and in a balanced position Fig 3 4.You should feel in a sturdy solid position with approximately 50% of weight equally distributed between each foot for an iron shot.

“Neutral” set up Fig 3
This starting position will help hugely to make a controlled balanced backswing where the weight will start to shift towards the right foot which facilitates the downswing movement. A good swing thought or “feel” is to try to maintain constant pressure into the ground we do not want to feel that the pressure into the ground is lost. copyright S.Bennettgolf
I will continue with this article next month and talk about the effects in the downswing and follow through. I would like to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and great golfing goals and achievements in 2014 from Sarah Bennett Golf. Personalised vouchers are available: www.sarahbennettgolf.co.uk

The Jubilee Cup Update from Jubilee Cup Committee, sponsored by Seabrook Warehousing, and reported by Chairman Phil Redhead
To see up to date results go to www.jubileecup.com
The Jubilee Cup Committee and our sponsor, Seabrook Warehousing Ltd, are delighted to confirm the progress being made towards the 2014 competition. I am currently forecasting for 2014 being the biggest number of competitors in the Jubilee Cup as we go from strength to strength with the addition of some new clubs this year, and despite one club having to unavoidably withdraw (Manor of Groves). The Committee is pleased to introduce Chigwell GC to the 2014 competition which should get us up to 42. The 2014 Draw will be held at our Annual General Meeting in December, and witnessed by club representatives. Golf tips for around the course As every golfer knows, if the ball doesn’t land on the fairway your problems are only just beginning.Your ball could be on a slope, in tall grass or bushes, on the lip of a bunker, on stony ground etc. etc In his new compact guide, best-selling author Yves Ton-That (“Golf Rules Quick Reference”, more than 1 million copies sold) gives the reader tips for every seemingly hopeless situation – short and concise, illustrated and easyto-understand. Thanks to the structure with sections from tee to green, golfers can find the information they need in an instant. A quick fix guide for eliminating mistakes makes the practical ring-bound water-repellent booklet the ideal accompaniment on the course. The tips are based on many years of competition experience by leading golf professionals. We’d be willing to bet that “Golf Trouble Shots and Quick Fix Guide” will help you save a number of strokes on your next round.

Bill lands the Braiswick Cup Bill Eke handsomely won Colchester Golf Club’s premier knockout competition the Braiswick Cup. The competition which started in April came to a late conclusion this year but this did not detract from the level of golf played. The in-form Alan Hyde was the other finalist and on paper Eke had his work cut out to get the better of him especially as he was giving Hyde two shots. Winner Bill Eke sarah’s Junior Festival day Sarah Bennett PGA Head Teaching Professional, Essex Girls and England East region coach held her successful Junior Festival day at three rivers Golf & Country club which brings together a number of new players who can experience the golf course for the first time. how to get the best out of your round in bad weather Playing this time of the year means you're probably going to have to deal with some bad weather. Here are some ideas on how to deal with it and still shoot some good scores. Be prepared - A little bit of preparation makes a big difference. Make sure you have the right amount of layers on. A good underlayer such as a skins or thermal layer can make a big difference and a good outer layer helps to keep the wind out. Also, on cold days, a pair of mitts with a hand warmer in are essential to keep the feeling in your hands. Make sure your course management is appropriate for the conditions - The course may be playing a lot different than it does in the summer. Holes you may have been able to reach in the summer may be out of reach in the winter. Accept that and you may have to make a par by getting up and down. On some holes, you may have to change your target such as on dog leg holes or holes over water. don't fight the wind- When you have wind blowing across your shots ensure you make allowances; aim left or right of your target and allow for the wind. The cold wind can have a big effect on your shots. When playing into the wind ensure you take plenty of club. If you normally hit a 7 iron from 150 yards, it is not uncommon to hit a 3 or 4 iron when playing in the winter. develop a knock down-shot - A knock down-shot is a shot that stays lower than your normal shot so should be less affected by the wind. To play it take one more club than you normally would and make a smaller swing than normal by playing the shot smoothly. This will give you more control. love the challenge of the day- A good attitude is essential in the bad weather. It is difficult at times but aim to do the best you can on each shot, use your short game to rescue you and remember other people will be finding it difficult as well!! Matt is currently offering a winter program to make a big impact on your game this Winter. The Program Includes 9 hole Playing Assessment lesson, Written Plan of improvement and Goal Setting, 10 x 45 minutes tailored Golf lessons on all parts of your game. Including Swing, short game, bunkers, putting, course management, golf fitness and the mental game. Normal price of £410 Special Price of £280. Limited Number Available and valid until February. 58

how to Combat Back pain Winter is the perfect time and opportunity to "fix" any injuries or back pain. Winter should always be the time you, a golfer, should spend more time in the gym so you are ready and in good form for the next season! Back pain affects a very high percentage of golfers, professional or not, old or young, back pain should not be restricting your game and there really is no need for it. A good specific flexibility programme and golf conditioning programme will eradicate pain and improve your game. I find through assessment that most golfers need postural work, core stability and more balanced flexibility.......not just flexibility, I find the main problem with lack of flexibility is when it's not equal. The right side is much tighter than the left or vice versa, or even worse the upper body is tight on the right and lower body left.......this puts the body under huge amounts of stress.....then you add a sport like golf and the body breaks down. It's very important when stretching that you stretch the tighter side twice to the once on the not so tight side. Below is one of my favourite exercises to improve posture, stability in the back by strengthening the multifidus, the transverse abdominis, internal obliques and general function..........on all 4's, relax the back and shoulders, draw the belly button to the spine and use the pelvic floor, then lift one hand and the opposite knee 1cm off the floor.....no more that 1cm, keep the body as still as possible and keep the movement very small!! Hold for 20seconds then swap sides and repeat 6-8 times. Do this daily for 2 weeks to see a real improvement. For a real advanced athlete try on a Swiss ball!!
