Ryder Cup Legend Bernard Gallacher is planning his return to the golf course and making plans to lead a campaign for defibrillators to be widely available at golf courses, following treatment at Aberdeen Royal infirmary for sudden heart arrhythmia. Whilst undertaking an engagement for a corporate client in Aberdeen, Bernard was taken ill and spent 15 days under the excellent care of medical staff in Aberdeen, seven days of which were in intensive care. Bernard went into cardiac arrest (commonly known as ‘Sudden Death Syndrome’) on three occasions following irregular heart activity in the days preceding the incident. Thanks to the composed and quick thinking of staff and guests at the engagement, as well as quick access to a defibrillator, Bernard is now on his way to making a full recovery with no long term effects expected. The availability of a defibrillator was central in giving Bernard a chance of survival and along with his wife Lesley and the support of the PGA and European Tour, he will be championing a campaign to make defibrillators widely accessible at golf courses around the UK. boyce hill host to 1966 Wold Cup Winners Boyce Hill Golf Club recently hosted an event on behalf of HBC Vehicle services on Thursday the 3rd of October 2013. Amongst the 100 or so attending and taking part were 8 famous footballers who were all part of the 1966 (Winning!!) England World cup squad and West Ham legend Trevor Brooking.

There was quite heavy rain during the event but all 9 managed to complete the round and remained in the best of spirits! Martin Peters won the prize for the best footballers score with 35 points. After the golf the 9 players signed a shirt which is to be auctioned for the Lilly Foundation, which tries to give hope, answers and support to the many children and families that face the challenges of Mitochondrial Disease (a type of cancer which mainly affects children) www.the lilyfoundation.org.uk

Chelmsford retain silver shield

Chelmsford retained the Silver Shield in the final played against Braintree at Canons Brook Golf Club. Chelmsford continued their run of success to the delight of team captain Alison Evans. Alison steps down at the end of this season after ten years service as team captain, during which time Chelmsford won the Shield all but one year. It was the first time Braintree had reached the final, the team were Chelsea Bernadine, Toni Brockwell, Mary Goodwin, Wendy Lodder, Lynda Minton, Julie Race, and Ann Snow. The winning Chelmsford team were Georgina Blackman, Liz Gibson, Chelsea Laundon, Kelly Martin, Katie Minney, Brenda Skudder, and Trish Wilson. Chelmsford Silver Shield Team 2013

On 30th September, the annual Inter-Counties Team Championship was held at The Berkshire Golf Club. Ten counties entered teams of four players in the 18 holes medal play competition, with the three best gross scores from each county to be totalled for the team score Essex were represented by Jo Rumsey, h/c 5 (Rochford Hundred); Sue Lines-Poulton, 6 (Thorndon Park); Brenda Skudder, 6 (Chelmsford) and Kate Gadsby, 7 (Chigwell). The standard was high with all entrants having handicaps between 3 and 7. At close of play, the CSS remained at 74. Surrey, the favourites with 3 players each with a h/c of 3 were the winners with a team total of 130. Buckinghamshire, just one stroke behind were second and a delighted Essex team tied with Berkshire on 140 for third, just being edged into fourth place on count back. Jo Rumsey carded a gross 76, Sue Lines-Poulton an 80 and Brenda Skudder an 84 (a creditable effort as she had never played the course before!). L-R: Brenda Skudder, Kate Gadsby, Sue Lines-Poulton (Team Captain), and Jo Rumsey

Munro foursomes Chelmsford played Braintree in the final of the Munro Foursomes, held over 36 holes at Chigwell GC. The match was all square after 18 holes but Chelmsford took a strong lead in the afternoon to secure the win. Kelly Martin and Georgina Blackman, Chelmsford GC.

Perfect birthday present as David sayer and thomas levet win the Alfred Dunhill team Championship David Sayer, an investment banker from Essex, earned himself the perfect 37th birthday present last month at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews – he won the team competition with his professional partner Thomas Levet. Sayer and Levet posted a final round 63 at the historic Old Course to finish with a four-round total of 40-under-par, a two-stroke winning margin. “It really has been a wonderful once-in-alifetime experience,” said Sayer, a 13handicapper from Chelmsford Golf Club who was playing in the tournament for the first time. “I only found out I was playing in the event ten days beforehand and everything that has happened since has been like a dream coming true. Being partnered with Thomas was the first thrill – he is a former Ryder Cup player and therefore it is a privilege to have played with him. “But what has been so great is that Thomas has been a real gentleman over the four days. He has helped to make this such a brilliant experience for me, and I am just so pleased that he played better than he has for a while and finished high up in the individual event.” Taking the team competition also won France’s Levet a separate US$50,000 in prize money, in addition to his individual winnings for finishing tied seventh, and Sayer added: “It’s a nice feeling to know that I’ve helped him to win an extra cheque. Thomas’s chances in the individual event ended when he drove out of bounds on the 14th hole, but I managed to get a par five, net birdie, there and that kept our team score going. “Over the four days I probably contributed around 13 net birdies to our overall score, and we seemed to ‘ham and egg’ it quite well over the four rounds. The weather has been superb this 12

week, and being able to play superb courses like St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns alongside a great golfer like Thomas has been unbelievable. “But to end up winning the team competition on my birthday makes it even more special. I will certainly never forget this week, and I just hope I get invited back next year to defend the trophy – and hopefully to get to play with Thomas again.” www.alfreddunhilllinks.com

Close the clubface, stop hitting to the right Here’s a great and simple drill to work on if you have a tendency to hit to the right. As that is the vast majority of the golfing population, this should appeal to a lot of golfers. There are two main influences on the direction the ball travels in; the path of the club and the angle of the Picture 1. clubface at the time it connects - to the time that it leaves. Out of these two areas, the clubface has the greatest influence and can often override the swing path. Ideally, the clubface should initially contact Picture 2. the ball in a slightly open fashion, but during its time with the ball will make a closing shape.

16

Pictures 1 and 2 demonstrate this, and this time that the clubface and ball are together is approximately three quarters of an inch, so not that long. If you find that you hit to the right, the clubface may very well have entered the ball correctly, but during the impact time would not have closed like the clubface in picture 2.

Picture 3.

here is the drill Start as I am in picture 3 with Picture 4. both palms facing each other, now lower the right hand (for a right handed golfer, reverse if left handed) as in picture 4 and move under the still outstretched left hand and place the back of the hands together as I have in picture 5.

The Heart of Golf in Essex. www.essexgolfer.com

Now swing to the top of your backswing and you will notice that your arms will rotate slightly and that the palm of your right hand is facing forward. Picture 6. So now swing into your follow-thru Picture 7 the palms have reversed and the left palm is now facing forward, this transition from the right palm facing forward at the top of the backswing and the left palm facing forward on the follow-through will have the effect of closing the clubface through impact, and if the clubface closes through impact, the ball will fly straighter.

Picture 5.

Picture 6.

Next month another practice drill. Picture 7. 17

At last! our season has started in earnest. Our first event was to The Burstead Golf Club for the PGA championship sponsored by Detur. A brilliantly supported Pro/Am on the Wednesday was followed by a gruelling 36 hole stroke play event for the professionals. Some fantastic scoring in the pro/am with Jason Levermore and James Webber tying with -6 scores of 65, two behind was Mark Stokes with 67 and in joint 4th Mark Hooper and Mark Talbott with -3 68's. In the team event Jason with Mike Smith, Ian Gordon and Paul Goldsmith 91 points and in 2nd Mark Stokes with Dominic Adams, Glen Llangenberg and Eamonn Matthews 88 pts and in 3rd James Webber James Boucher, Jim Clark and Alastair McCleod with 87 points. We had a complete change in the weather for the championship and conditions were very difficult. After the morning round Johnnie Fryatt was best score in but Jason Levermore pulled a 68 out of the bag to take the title for the fourth consecutive year. The following week saw us cross the Channel en route to Brugge for the Belgian Pro/Am how lucky were we with the weather - golf on three great courses and the icing on the cake for the final day was Royal Zoute which was magnificent. Jason Levermore was 3 shots ahead going into the last day but Mark Stokes managed to claw back 2 shots narrowly losing the title by one shot to Jason. Mark got his own back in the team event by winning by 6 shots from John Judd and his Thorndon Park team. of Blair Hunter, Greg Thomas and Nick Burr. Straight back from Brugge and straight down to Thorpe Hall on Sunday October 20th sponsored by The Griffin Group of companies (estate agents/managers based around the Southend area). The weather was dreadful and unfortunately play was foreshortened. Matthew Southgate took first prize with 2nd place going to Jason Levermore and Mark Hooper was in 3rd. In the team event, Matt came 1st with Rhys Piper in 2nd and James Scade in 3rd. That's it for the this issue but tons more to report next month. Colts riding high for Warley Park Warley Park’s prospects look in fine hands over the coming years, with the young age groups having a tremendous season in 2013. The Colts team reached the semi-finals of the prestigious Essex Youth Shield, only to go down to a 3-2 defeat against Stoke-by-Nayland at Rochford Hundred Golf Club. Meanwhile, Ryan Cox and Bailee Curran have represented Essex at Under-16 level, with Joe DeFries and Edward Brown also representing the Essex U-14 and U-13’s respectively. Joe gave an enormous boost to the club’s fortunes by winning the season-long U-14 Essex Tour, a testing competition which attracted 70 contestants and was run over six different courses around the county. Edward was also delighted to clinch 2nd place overall in the final round. It’s not just the boys, either: Ellisha Cox played for Essex U-12s and Sophie Wheeler won county events, giving her strong prospects of playing for Essex in the near future. Within the club itself, Ryan won the Midweek Club Championship at the age of just 15 by matching par over 18 holes then beating his father, a previous club champion, on the first play-off hole. However, he was beaten in the 2013 Weekend Club Championship by a fellow Colt, 16-year-old Tom Fenton, in a play-off. The pair had seen off the challenge of over 100, mainly adult, club members to top the leaderboard after 36 holes on a score of three-under-par. Baille, who is also 15, won the Colts Championship, beating both Ryan and Tom as he returned a score of two-underpar. Everyone at the club would like to congratulate and thank section organisers John Williams, Ron Lowe, Michael Cox and Elizabeth Brown, along with Wayne Selley and Russell Killington, the PGA professionals who are based at the club and who teach the colts. Having recently introduced some excellent family discount membership schemes, club manager Stuart Orrin is optimistic about the future: “The standard of our juniors at Warley Park is mind-blowing and interested parents from Brentwood and the surrounding area are fighting for an opportunity for their children to join the section. Although we are currently at our limit of 50 members, a few of the Colts will turn 18 soon, meaning that spaces will become available shortly." For more information, contact Stuart Orrin on 01277 24891.

Chloe rose Winner of england Golf 2013 "National skills Challenge" Over 7000 Junior Golfers played in the 2013 England Golf, "National Skills Challenge". Starting at Club level, progressing to area and regional finals, Clacton Golf Clubs Junior Members, Chloe Rose and Chay Robinson made it through to the National finals at Woodhall Spa Golf Club, the home of England Golf. Chay Robinson did well to reach the final four competitors in his 15-17 age group, but just lost out to Charley Mycock from Bakewell GC in Derbyshire. Chloe Rose, playing in the 12-14 age group got into the final four, and then continuing the form she has shown all summer, had a fantastic win. Chloe must now be unique having won this national competition twice, at two different age levels.

Celebrating the ryder Cup 60th Anniversary In 1953 a fresh-faced, 22-year old Peter Alliss made his Ryder Cup debut at Wentworth. This month, almost exactly 60 years to the day, he returned to the Club alongside fellow Ryder Cup stars Tony Jacklin and Bernard Gallacher, as one of the guests of honour at a glittering gala dinner to celebrate the diamond anniversary of this historic event. In the elegant surroundings of the Club’s main ballroom, members and honoured guests enjoyed a recreation of the very same menu that was served at the 1953 Ryder Cup Gala Dinner. All evening a stunning collection of period photographs was shown on big screens around the room, an enigmatic reminder of that dramatic golfing week 60 years ago. Among them were some wonderful action shots of the players in action at Wentworth and even an image of Peter Alliss and his father Percy, himself a Ryder Cup player of great distinction, enjoying tea al fresco between matches. Colchester new captains beat the old In October, Colchester GC held their traditional Old Captains v New Captains match. New Colchester captains Tim Moriarty and Shelley Persent Ladies Captain, with their respective teams - took on the outgoing Club Captains Barrie Minns and Ann Jackson. The first match, between the captains, ended with New Captains being victorious over the Minns/Jackson pairing. They won by just the one hole. This loss by the Old Tim Moriarty and Captains sadly for Shelley Persent them set the trend for the rest of the matches and as the scores came in it was soon obvious that the incoming captains would have their victory; the final score being seven matches to three in their favour. The Captains of the other sections for 2014 were Brain Alden, for the Vets and Tom Miller for the Juniors.

WPGA International Challenge at stoke by Nayland enjoys a thrilling finish Hannah Ralph produced the golf strokes of a master in Constable Country to win the WPGA International Challenge at Stoke by Nayland at the end of September. In what proved a dramatic climax to the third and final round that had seen the lead change hands with bewildering regularity, Ralph posted birdies on the final two holes to claim the €4,000 winner’s cheque. That is the biggest and most prestigious win of the 25-year-old’s career and she secured it with a flourish. Amy Boulden failed to capitalise on her birdie chance and finished three strokes adrift of Ralph and sharing second place with Galina Rotmistrova of Russia. Rotmistrova, in common with the winner, posted oneunder for the third round of the tournament. Scotland’s Kelsey MacDonald, who is also new to the professional ranks and was one stroke clear after two rounds, also faltered in the final stages and had to settle for tied fifth place with Finland’s Hannah Ralph, winner of the WPGA International Challenge Monica Christiansen, one stroke behind Mireia Prat of Spain who was fourth. A selection of Great Britain and Ireland’s top female PGA pros competed against rising stars of the future in the inaugural WPGA International Challenge at the family-owned Stoke by Nayland resort at the end of September. The 54-hole tournament, which was sponsored by the host venue, was the only Ladies European Tour Access Series event scheduled in the United Kingdom. The PGA’s chief executive, Sandy Jones, commented: "We had been discussing with LET for some time the concept and creation of this event. I am also very pleased to say that it was presented at Stoke by Nayland, a venue that is well known to us and has partnered the PGA on many past occasions to stage great golf events.” Situated in a stunning ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ on the Suffolk/Essex border, Stoke by Nayland has the experience of staging worldwide televised European Challenge Tour, European Senior Tour and PGA Europro events, the family owners were excited 28

Essex Golf Union the esseX JuNIor Golf tour AND orDer of MerIt In the September issue of Essex Golfer we published the results and photographs from the Essex Junior Golf Tour. We have been asked to publish some details about the Tour, including its history, and the objectives the County has in mind when organising the events. The County recognises that it has a duty to recognise and further develop junior talent and potential arising from the excellent work being done in golf clubs in Essex. For some years we have organised and developed a coaching programme that has served to provide junior teams capable of competing against the neighbouring counties in our area. We decided that we needed to provide more competition at the best possible level for our youngsters, particularly bearing in mind the success that at least one other county was gaining from a similar exercise. In 2012 the Essex Junior Order of Merit was established with that objective. This attracted between 40 and 50 youngsters below the age of 14 on January 1st 2012, who played in five competitions at different venues in Essex. The rationale behind this was to provide competition away from each boy’s home course against the best boys in each age group. Playing away from home in a competitive atmosphere is, without doubt, one of the most effective ways of judging a boys talent and potential. We had tried other ways of achieving this but this was undoubtedly the most effective. Playing golf on unfamiliar courses also provides a much more accurate handicap to use when selecting youngsters for County honours. It also broadens the horizons of those youngsters and helps fire their enthusiasm We were extremely lucky and privileged to attract the attention of the NORMAN GARON TRUST who made a significant contribution towards the running costs of the events by providing sponsorship. Resulting from this we were able to provide shirts and bag tags for the competitors as well as purchase banners to give visual status to the event. The NORMAN GARON TRUST supported the competition for 2012, but they were somewhat concerned that we were focusing our efforts on the youngsters already committed to County golf, and wished us to make a greater effort to attract other youngsters into the competition. In particular they were keen to see girls involved. They were pushing at an open door. So for 2013 we spread the word more widely that the Essex Junior Golf Tour was available to all youngsters. Members of golf clubs under 14 years of age, non members, boys and girls were all welcome provided that they could play to an Adult handicap. The result was amazing with nearly 90 youngsters signing up following the launch of the revised competition. We quickly became aware that we had started a landslide so further planned advertising was put on hold. Most of our host clubs had indicated that 60 players were the most that they could manage for any competition. Fortunately the numbers for each event did not exceed this number and we embarked upon the program of competitions with great enthusiasm, but holding our breath 34

The Heart of Golf in Essex. www.essexgolfer.com

We were, and remain, disappointed at the low number of girls taking part. However, those that participated seem to have enjoyed the experience and some in particular have competed very well indeed. We look forward to an increase in numbers next year. From holding these competitions we have promoted at least 5 boys into County teams during the year. In some cases the boys were not submitted for inclusion in the County Coaching scheme, but their efforts on the course during these matches raised their profile and they became key members in their particular age groups. Because the competitions are held at several different venues, prize giving is held over until the last event, appropriately held at Garon Park. NORMAN GARON TRUST members are on hand to support the youngsters and present the trophies. Our thanks to the clubs that give of their venues so generously and, in doing so, support Junior Golf in Essex. These clubs are Gosfield Lake, Forrester Park, North Weald, Langdon Hills and Garon Park. Finally, we offer our grateful thanks to NorMAN GAroN trust for its tremendous support. Their contribution to junior golf in Essex is immense. Keith Mitchell, County Junior Organiser

Essex County News by Frank Tomlin, Press Officer, Essex County Golf Union

CouNtY PresIDeNt JohN Peters looKs bACK oVer esseX CouNtY Golf IN 2013 The Essex Golf Union Championships and team matches have run smoothly and successfully right from spring to early autumn culminating in some outstanding performances from our players and club teams. Our player of the season has to be bobby Keeble from Crowlands Heath GC who followed his Keating Trophy victory at Frinton GC with a successful defence of the County Amateur Championship at The Essex Earls Colne GC, going on to win the England Champion of County Champions Tournament at the challenging Woodhall Spa GC, Hotchkin Course, in September. Bobby has been selected for the England Men’s “A” Squad for 2014. Other individual performances well worthy of note are Jack Dyer of Rochford Hundred GC who is the 2013 County Boys & English Schools Champion and then went on to represent England Schools international team versus Wales, and louis lazarus from Romford GC who played for England Under 16’s in matches against Wales, Ireland & Scotland after a 5th place finish in the prestigious McGregor Trophy run by England Golf at the impressive links course, Seacroft GC, near Skegness. The County Order of Merit was won by Mitchel sarling from Rochford 100 GC with a demonstration of consistent golf, season long, culminating with individual victories in the Romford Scratch and Oliver Fisher Trophy. The County Colts Team, Managed by David Edwards (Royal Epping Forest GC) and Captained by Jordan Wallace (Abridge GC), won through to the England Golf South East League Final where they shared the title with Sussex in a rained off final at Clacton in early October. It is heartening to see so many of the young players that we have nurtured through our county coaching schemes, going on to achieve golfing success at county and national level. Our aim, as always, is to build and maintain a group of players whose golfing skills we will develop to provide them with a pathway leading to great achievements in our sport. The results speak for themselves. We take pride in the way Essex has become a successful nursery for our aspiring golfers". The Club Team events ran smoothly with the Thornton Cup Final between Chelmsford and Thorndon Park being the most exciting. Chelmsford on a rainy and gloomy day at Abridge GC came back from a morning 3-2 foursome’s deficit to win the match on the last green in the last singles match left on the course in seriously fading light. Our Competitions and Matches require a great deal of organising and I would like to place on record my personal thanks to all of the Affiliated Clubs who

have given up their courses to allow the County Union to run its events. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the County Union employees Board Members and co-opted Rules officials & Volunteers for their hard work and dedication to the smooth running of our events. Congratulations to you all: you have been a credit to the Essex Golf Union! My thanks also to the Norman Garon Trust and Ingrebourne Valley ltd for their generous sponsorship of our Under 14 Tour events run so effectively by County Board Director Keith Mitchell. Finally I would congratulate Royal Epping Forest GC on achieving their 125th Anniversary, Canons Brook GC on their 50th Anniversary, Stoke by Nayland on their 40th Anniversary year and last but not least Gosfield Lake on their 25th Anniversary. Colchester’s team of Ben David and George Whitbread came in with a 73 in the afternoon making a total of 152 and so beating Stock Brook’s Steve Adkins and Mason Papple on countback. In third place were Crondon Park’s Glynn Williams and Tony Martin with 153 on countback. Colchester had previously won the Essex Foursomes Championship in 1952 and 1991 We thank Robert Orr, the Club President for presenting the prizes and we thank Crondon Park Golf Club for their hospitality. ______________________________________ the thorNtoN CuP PlAte fINAl the leslIe f. Wood Plate beating Three Rivers by 6½ points to 3½. But that’s not the whole story. It rained heavily. It was a minor miracle that the Crondon Park course remained playable enabling the matches to be completed. The start of the Leslie Wood Plate final was delayed for 15 minutes while the greenkeepers cut a new hole on the higher part of the second green to keep it in play.

At the prizegiving, all four team captains praised the Crondon Park greens staff for presenting a playable course despite the awful weather. Rightly so ! The Plates and the medals for the individual players were presented by County President John Peters and Crondon Park Captain Len Willis. These two Plate competitions were the brainchild of Crondon Park who provide the Plates and host the finals. We are grateful to Crondon Park for coming up with this idea which has proved very popular since its inception five years ago. All four clubs can be proud of their players, not only for reaching the finals but also for the excellent sporting spirit in which they conducted themselves on and off the course. ______________________________________ MullIs troPhY The Mullis Trophy was first played for in 1931, and is traditionally the final competition of the season. It was a beautiful warm sunny day, as 46 pairs representing 32 Clubs set off to play 18 holes in a fourball betterball stableford format.

Rayleigh Club’s Winners Darren Lee & Ian Bement The results were very close with Darren Lee and Ian Bement from The Rayleigh Club coming in with a winning score of 45 points, they were followed closely by Trevor Firby and Adam Plummer, from Channels with 44 points. In third place were Tony Walker and David Peters from Thorpe Hall with 43 points on countback. It was a most enjoyable day with good golf played in great spirits. Our thanks go to Ilford Golf Club who made everyone so welcome.

Ben Tatum from Suffolk took the individual honours on the day. Other Essex lads that scored below their handicaps were Harvey Sullivan, James Styles, and Charlie Doods who all played really well on the day, but the four Suffolk boys who scored well into the 40 points made the difference and Essex lost by a mere 5 points. The Essex boys displayed a lot of promise for the future, and with some hard practice over the coming winter they should be able to compete with most local county sides. What to do this Winter? Already Summer has come and gone very quickly and the colder weather is on the way. So what are the things you could be focusing on in the winter to help improve your game. There are lots of things you could be doing to get your game ready for next March!!! Work on your technique- Winter is a great time to work on your technique and ingrain a new move; as you have to think a lot about the move you need to change, which is what you don't want to be doing on the course. Winter is the best time to improve your technique and the best time to be having lessons, which is contrary to what most people do. Improve your fitness- A great time to improve your golf fitness, which should mainly focus on improving your flexibility. It could involve going to a regular pilates class or working with a trainer. Other sports such as tennis and badminton are great ways to improve your fitness for golf as well. Get your clubs fitted- It is a good time to look at new clubs if you are thinking of changing your equipment. If you are not changing, make sure you get your grips changed and iron's loft and lie checked before the new season starts. Grips should be changed once a year if you play regulary and most clubs loft and lie can move so have them checked. Keep playing and be prepared- Keep playing through the winter even though it may not be as much fun as playing with the sun on your back. Enjoy the challenge, ensure you are prepared for the day and make sure you take the appropriate club for the shot. The wind and cold often mean you have to take a lot more club. Matt is currently offering a Winter Program to make a big impact on your game this Winter The Program Includes 9 hole Playing Assessment lesson, Written Plan of improvement and Goal Setting, 10 x 45 minutes tailored Golf lessons on all parts of your game. Including Swing, short game, bunkers, putting, course management , golf fitness and the mental game. Normal price of £410 Special Price of £280. Lee Porter, the PGA Professional attached to Hylands Golf Complex in Chelmsford, has been voted Clubmaker of the Year by the Golf Clubmakers Association in the UK. Lee now ranks in the top ten custom-ďŹ t clubmakers throughout Europe. No wonder he counts 8 touring golf pros as customers, including the ever popular local Pro, Robbie Coles.

lie Angle - the Missing fundamental For most people the lie angle, or how the golf club sits on the ground, is a fairly insignificant element of their golf club. Why? In my opinion, it is because we are currently in a golfing world full of custom fitting terms like 'kick point' and 'smash factor', which sound far more exciting. But just how important is the lie angle of your golf clubs? In my opinion, lie angle is the lost fundamental, just as important as your grip or stance. Allow me to explain - most first golf lessons start by aiming the club at the target, taking their grip and then their stance. For me, this makes perfect sense - the club needs to point in the direction you want the ball to go; the grip cannot be applied until the club is aimed and taking a stance before aiming the club just seems wrong somehow. But let's rewind to the aim - if the club sits incorrectly, then your face aim will be poor. In itself, this may not sound a problem but due to the fact that 75% of the initial flight of the ball comes from face alignment alone you start to see the importance. A golf club too upright (the toe of the club off the floor) will aim the club face left; a flat lie angle (the toe digging into the turf) will aim right. This is actually an optical illusion because no matter how square (the club aiming at the target) you think your club face is, it will always be offline due to the relationship between the loft of the golf club and the lie angle - the greater the loft the more exaggerated the clubs aim.

1

2

So if the clubs lie angle is wrong. How can you hit the ball straight? Well, you can't - without making compensations. This is basically a movement in the golf swing to 'offset' the initial mistake. Interestingly, this may have not been a conscious decision - it was probably instinct. figure 1 shows an upright lie angle (toe up) with the face aiming left. figure 2 shows a correct lie angle with the face aiming at the target. Let me give you an example: if I were to put you in front of a goal with a couple of footballs and ask you to kick the ball into the net, I doubt this would be too taxing. But let's say you missed the first shot to the left, would you then analyse your kicking action and foot position to ensure you scored with the second ball or would instinct tell you to simply 'push' or swing 46

The Heart of Golf in Essex. www.essexgolfer.com

your foot more to the right? I think the same applies with golf - a golfer would only entertain missing the shot to the left or right for so long before a compensation came into play, conscious or not - and don't forget two wrongs don't make a right. Compensations are inconsistencies, which in this case are easily avoidable. But how far can the compensations go? You would be surprised. An incorrect face alignment at impact results in a stray shot. In an effort to 'save' the face angle a golfer can make many compensations, including: • • • • • •

Incorrect swing path Incorrect swing plane Poor weight movement Loss of balance Incorrect alignment Poor grip

In fact, the list goes on - all because the initial aim was incorrect. Let's go back to our first golf lesson, if our instructor asked us to aim our club 40 yards to the left, we would surely question this, but what if we didn't know we were doing that? If your golf club has an incorrect lie angle that is what is happening - every time you play. Our golf club actually has two lie angles, Static and Dynamic. Static is what the lie angle is in the address position, Dynamic is at point of impact. For me, Dynamic is the more important but Static is not far behind – if there is a big difference between the Static and Dynamic angle, a swing problem could be brewing. For example, a golfer who addresses the ball with the toe of the golf club high in the air but then hits the toe of the club into the ground at impact has gained height throughout the swing. Another overlooked area of a poor lie angle is how it can affect a player’s ball striking. Generally, a golf club that is upright (toe up) will encourage a strike towards the toe of the club, whereas a flat club (toe down) will push the strike more towards the heel. One of the most important things in golf is centre striking, so how do you find the centre when the lie angle is incorrect? Simple - compensations. One of the most common questions I get asked is whether a golfer is good enough to benefit from custom fitting. This question is generally generated from new players who have just started the game and who are looking to establish their technique. My opinion is simple - every new golfer is a blank canvas so why would you start a golfer with an incorrect lie angle which then requires the player to develop a swing fault to make the ball fly straight. Golfers of all ages and abilities can benefit from golf clubs that fit them. A loft and lie check is a fairly simple job and can be carried out on your current equipment or on new clubs - in fact, all new clubs should be set up for you on collection. No true professional leaves lie angles to chance, and in my opinion, neither should you. © 2013 Lee Porter Golf Solutions

It has been a month since I suggested you set some goals to work to during the “off season” I hope the idea has given you the motivation to set some objectives which you can work with your coach over the winter period Our playing and practise times are now restricted so it is important that we give ourselves the best chance to play to our ability. A club member asked me to write an article based around some winter preparation ideas, which I hope you will find light hearted but applicable. Warm Up & Preparation “Fail to prepare, prepare to fail” Benjamin Frankin

These to me are key elements to help you play golf pain free whilst giving yourself the best chance to start your round ready for action! This is not intended to be a Fitness article but to heighten your awareness that with a slight change from your current habit may assist you to achieve increased performance. I have some very golf specific warm ups that I carry out with my clients, starting with small movements then gradually working up to the full replication of the swing. These are tailor made taking any limitations into account. Once you have a routine these can be performed prior to hitting balls on the range. I am not necessarily suggesting that you all spend 5 days a week in the gym as this may not be practical or possible for a number of players but there are a few simple ways we can all become better prepared both mentally and physically for those winter morning rounds of golf 48

ChelMsforD Duo Are fIrst to WIN PrestIGIous tItle tWICe

Essex golfers Jason levermore and Andrew Pestell created history when they became the first duo to win the Golfbreaks.com PGA Fourball Championship for a second occasion. Levermore, the head professional at Channels GC, Little Waltham, and Pestell, from Chelmsford GC, first won the title in 2008, and repeated the feat after producing a week's best 11-under-par 62 to finish on 23-under to win by one shot at Forest Pines, in Lincolnshire. However, they admitted they thought they were playing for second spot having begun the final round five-shots behind the leaders, yet their audacious game plan came good as they scooped the title and the £5,000 winners' cheque. A stunning round of nine birdies - including two in the last two holes from Pestell, plus the bonus of an eagle on the third, saw them come through the pack and deny Kent neighbours and tournament debutants Benn Barham and Mark Trow, both from Kings Hill. Levermore, who, earlier this year, was denied a £100,000 car because of an administrative error after holing-inone during the prestigious BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, said: "It feels great to win a second time saves us qualifying next year! The last time we won we played the following year and then failed to qualify the following two. If we win again, maybe we'll get a lifetime entry. "This has been a really busy year for me with a new job, a baby boy and playing the regions, which wasn't in the plans, so this just tops the year off."

Matt Lewis/Getty Images. Levermore, who eagled the third from 120 yards after being forced to chip out of a fairway bunker, admitted he thought the duo were playing for second until seeing that none of the other title challengers were setting the course alight. "I didn't think going into today we'd have much chance of winning," he said. "I thought if we could get a good round going, we could finish second. The leaders didn't get off to any start and then we were five-under going through nine and could see no-one had pushed on. That was when we thought, we had a chance with a good back nine. We wanted to post a score and give the guys behind something to beat, which we did. "The first couple of days we didn't get anything flowing, but today it flowed lovely." Pestell, who sunk crucial putts over the final three holes, added: "The game plan was to get to five-under through nine and then hopefully before the other boys got round, get another one at 10 and get on the leaderboard. "To win again is brilliant considering we struggled a few years to even qualify." But the duo had to wait for confirmation of their win, with the two pairs in the group behind both having chances to force a play-off with a birdie on the last. Barham and Trow, both on the green in two, parred the hole to card an eight-under-par 65, their best score of the week, to finish as runners-up in 22-under-par on the back of successive 66s. ● Jason Levermore and his team at Channels Golf Club are available to coach members and non-members alike. "The Winter Blues" The weather is slowly getting worse, it's getting colder and wetter, practice is reducing and golf is generally becoming less pleasant. The winter is the perfect time to hit the gym and get yourself in tip top condition for the spring. Finding a biomechanic or good golf specific personal trainer should be on your to do list now, to get optimal results in the spring. The first 6-8 weeks will focus on flexibility and stretching.......this is key and perfect at this time of year. Stretching correctly before playing in cold, wet conditions is absolutely vital, especially if you suffer from arthritis, stiffness, or you have some form of back injury. Any of the above will worsen and heavily impact your game without correct warming up, stretching and mobilising before you play. On the other hand, if you are hyper-mobile or super flexible, the cold, wet conditions will actually improve your game and stretching/warming up is not needed. Every golfer, everybody and every person is different and needs different programming to get optimal results. Most commonly golfers are stiff, have arthritis or have some form of injury. So these are my top tips for this person on how to warm up, stretch and mobilise to prepare for the cold days; 1. Dress appropriately, keep the neck warm, especially. Being physically warm will keep the muscles warm, therefore, reducing the risk of injury, muscle pulls and playing dreadful for that reason!! 2. Dynamically stretch, 5seconds contract, 5seconds relax pre game. This means stretch but avoid long holds. 3. Mobilise the body at every opportunity! Using the golf club, look up golf mobilisations and try out a few. 4. Keep hydrated with clean pure water.

square up….. Look at yourself in the mirror and be analytical of your posture without shoes, or better still have a spinal assessment with an Osteopath or Physiotherapist (we would recommend Claire Webster Tel. 07771 591298 or Cross Purposes Physiotherapy Clinic Tel. 01376 514675). If your spine and posture are optimally and structurally sound, this will be performance enhancing, particularly for your long game. By contrast, is your first shot erratic and unpredictable? Is your shot inhibited by lack of shoulder flexibility or tightness in the lumbar spine? Certain foods boost flexibility, particularly oily fish (mackerel/herring/kippers/salmon/sardines and pilchards), and a hydrating plate (50% of the plate should be colourful vegetables – baby corn/carrots/mangetout/sugar snap peas/purple sprouting broccoli amongst others). All of these nutrient dense foods are effective in supporting the synovial membranes and the elasticity of your joints. Over the age of 40, you could lose a significant percentage of your shoulder flexibility – hence 280 yards plus off the tee could be a thing of the past! Invest in your health, and your golf will benefit! Key mobility exercises assisting flexion and extension and shoulder rotation exercises, deltoid stretches, and pectoral stretches (see You Tube for great demonstrations, e.g. The Stretching Institute). Moreover, ensure you stretch pre- and post-game to strive for enhanced performance and remain injury free! 58

Golf club helps care home residents take to their own green Residents at Care UK’s Silversprings care home in Thorrington will be taking to the greens as a new golf course, designed and built by Clacton-on-sea Golf Club, is officially opened. Club Captain Bill McGrath and head green keeper Alan Smith joined Sally Rushant, the home’s manager, to open the Silversprings Woodland Course six-hole putting green. Sally said: “Many of our residents have been keen golfers for years. When we looked at how we could develop our large grounds, they were very keen on the idea of a course. “We were delighted when the team at Clacton-onSea Golf Course generously offered to design and build the course, as well as donating putters and balls. “Not only will it please experienced golfers, but it will also provide an opportunity for other residents to try something new. As well as being a fun activity, it will help residents to stay fit and healthy.” The club’s head professional Michael Goodwin and development director Jim Wiggam also attended the event.

Golf tips for around the course

Clacton win the bentley Cup

Dickson (left) Vs Clayton (right)

As every golfer knows, if the ball doesn’t land on the fairway your problems are only just beginning.Your ball could be on a slope, in tall grass or bushes, on the lip of a bunker, on stony ground etc. etc In his new compact guide, best-selling author Yves Ton-That (“Golf Rules Quick Reference”, more than 1 million copies sold) gives the reader tips for every seemingly hopeless situation – short and concise, illustrated and easyto-understand. Thanks to the structure with sections from tee to green, golfers can find the information they need in an instant. A quick fix guide for eliminating mistakes makes the practical ring-bound water-repellent booklet the ideal accompaniment on the course. The tips are based on many years of competition experience by leading golf professionals. We’d be willing to bet that “Golf Trouble Shots and Quick Fix Guide” will help you save a number of strokes on your next round.

WhAt A shot ! 77 years young, WALTER CARVELL, long time member at Wanstead GC, racked up six stableford points with one shot in a club competition last month. He holed in one at the difficult 15th 150 yard par three using an eleven wood. As he received two shots on his handicap allowance, his ace meant he eagled the hole and reaped the reward.

Frinton Golf Club Captain Vince McAuley welcomed Clacton Golf Club Captain William McGrath and his team to the Frinton Club for the 2013 playing of the "Bentley Cup". First played in 1923, the cup was presented by W Bentley Esq., the then Captain of Clacton Golf Club. This annual fixture is eagerly awaited by both these long established clubs, Clacton having started in 1892 and Frinton in 1895.Good competitive golf was had by all, with Clacton winning by six matches to four matches. The next "Bentley Cup", match will be played at Clacton in October 2014.
