Semi Final 1 Results Winners Bentley 6 Points - Crondon Park 3 Points The weather was ideal for the players, mild and clear, although the wind did seem to make it difficult to find the fairways on the early holes. Being able to have a two tee start and sending the pairs off first kept all the action fairly close, with most of the action taking place after 13 holes. Bentley had their first win when Ray Nash beat the Crondon captain Keith Woods 5 and 4. The first singles match between Denis Johnson of Bentley and Paul Smith of Crondon finished with a 2 and 1 victory to Bentley. Crondon managed to pull back in the third singles when Tony Efreme completed his 3 and 2 win over Chris Shulver. The first pairs match had Bentley players John Davison and Robin Mitchell, 2 up after 15 holes, but the valiant efforts of Mark Willis and Scott Goodwin in halving the next two holes failed to stop Bentley winning 2 and 1. Crondon cut the lead again when Neil Whitelaw who was 2 up at the turn, concluded the win against Graham Robson on the 15th at 4 and 3. The recovery was short lived when John Bantick (Bentley) survived a late challenge from Len Willis, who picked up on the 17th and accepted the 3 up defeat. Bentley were now looking comfortable with the match Bentley, Semi Final Winning Team score at 4 – 2, but Crondon knew that the last 3 matches on the course were critical. And the tension was rising! The second pairs match looked to be going Crondon’s way when they were 3 up with 6 to play, but Bentley had recovered to All Square as they approached the 17th green. Wayne Rumsey parred this hole with an outstanding 20ft putt, which beat all the bumps and borrows of the green. With Bentley, at worst, coming out of this hole with a half; arrangements were being made by the captain’s and the committee, for a suddendeath play-off. The four players knew this, so did the spectators and those players who had finished their matches. The tee and fairway were quite crowded. The Crondon players tried hard but in the end lost the hole and the match at 2 up giving Bentley the 5 wins they needed to secure the match. The last two matches played to a finish with Alan Levett beating Mark Carpenter 3 and 2 to give Bentley their 6th win, and Neil Mitchell and John Fanning beating Tony Mann and David Norris by 1 to give Crondon some consolation. Our thanks to Stock Brook Manor for their hospitality and providing a course in excellent condition and the two tee start.
Semi Final 2 Results Winners Colne Valley 6 Points - Stock Brook Manor 3 Points The Semi-Final match was played in glorious sunshine but with tricky windy conditions that tested the players on the day. Not that this could be discerned as both teams helped themselves to hearty All Day Breakfasts courtesy of the staff of Russell Phillips at Woolston Manor GC. Colin Gilbert from SBM and Simon Gugacz from Colne Valley claimed 6 & 5 victories on the signature 12th hole at Woolston. Beyond this, however, for the first 3 hours of play the matches (and overall result) was incredibly close with single points changing hands. Ultimately, at the same time, as play continued the bias was favouring Colne Valley despite some excellent work done by SBM players Andy Parker, Alan Hemple and Mike Wray winning and halving matches. When the writing was clearly on the wall, after Colne Valley’s pairs player Stuart Collingridge’s match winning putt on the 16th hole, SBM’s Captain Andy Picton decided enough was enough and agreed an honourable halved hole on match 9 (which included founding Jubilee Cup Chairman 42
