The Warren Golf and Country Club is undergoing a major programme of investment and improvement. Recent work includes full bunker renovation for our front 9, drainage, tee reconstruction, forest management, roadway resurfacing, clubhouse improvements including kitchen refit, two refitted and extensively stocked Pro shops, the addition of Trackman III technology for coaching and custom fitting, new practice nets, new menus and wine list, and improved pool and spa facilities. This all in addition to our already superb golf courses and practice facilities. We have a further programme of major investment planned as we further transform The Warren Golf and Country Club and confirm our place as the Home of Golf in Essex. Our Open Day is your chance to see these exciting developments and meet the team behind it.

TEE OFF
How seriously do you take your golf? Glen Lott did. He recently played in a match with three friends at Westwynd Golf Club, Oakland, Michigan. Coming off the13th tee, one of his buddies questioned the figure he had just recorded on his scorecard. Allegedly, Mr Lott didn't take kindly to this question and proceeded to hit his interrogator with his Callaway 5 iron, breaking it on his arm. Unperturbed, Mr Lott proceeded to stab his friend seven times with the broken shaft before the other two players dragged him off and held him down. This action enabled the heavily bleeding victim to make his escape on a golf buggy. Undeterred, Mr Lott struggled free, took the other buggy and chased after the injured golfer whilst screaming obscenities regarding completion of the assault. The case is due in court later this year. ONLY IN AMERICA.
This story makes me feel a bit better about shouting some strong obscenities at my golfing buddies last week, when I missed a 3-foot putt to win the match. They were lucky I could have pulled my 5 iron out on them!! Glen head
The course is set in 240 acres of beautiful parkland in the Essex countryside. The club has hosted the R & A Regional Open Qualifier for the last 5 years.

Crondon Ladies Win The Bronze Shield Final Again The Bronze Shield Final played between Crondon Park GC and The Warren Golf and Country Club at Clacton-on-Sea GC literally started with a bang. After the first two matches had been started the players were forced to retreat to the Clubhouse due to thunder and lightning. After only a slight delay all the matches were away; the teams being started by the County Captain Amanda Colgate-Herbert. The course was presented in immaculate condition, and both teams had good support. When the teams stopped for refreshments after the 10th hole, The Warren were down in three matches, up in two and all square in two. Ann Lisamer of The Warren was first to win 2 and 1 against Karen Young of Crondon Park. Then Crondon Park’s Jo Lilliott won 7 and 6 followed by Maria Allen of Crondon Park winning 4 and 3. Ursula Heelis of The Warren after a close match lost at the 17th hole and Crondon Park only then required one more match to win the Bronze Shield for the second year in a row. This came on the 16th hole with a win for Jackie North 3 and 2. The other two remaining matches out on the course in which The Warren players Diane Dyer and Margaret Alston were leading were given the news and picked up their balls. All the games were played in extremely good spirit, and the Crondon Park players were overjoyed having retained the Bronze Shield. At the end of an exciting day the Bronze Team Crondon Ladies winning team Captain of Crondon Park, Karen Young, was delighted to be presented with the Shield by the County President, Bridget Logan. Christine Evans, Bronze Team Captain of The Warren also added her congratulations.

Understand your lever and add the power. There would be little point improving the speed of the club, resulting in the distance the ball goes, if you were to only hit the ball further in the trees! So you needed balance, plane, pivot and clubface compatibility first. The lever system seen here in picture 1 at set-up is the extended left arm, the grip and the shaft of the club. If we call the left arm the top lever, the grip the hinge and the shaft the lower lever, this is the most potentially powerful mechanism in the swing, it creates angular catch up speed and shaft lean vital for a stable de lofted club head at impact. At the top of Picture 1. 10
the back swing picture 2, my lever system is not quite fully loaded; you can see an angle between the top and bottom lever of around maybe 90 degrees, there is some loading here, but this is just the start point to create huge power. Picture 2. Halfway down picture 3 fully loaded you can see that the 90 degree angle set at the top of the backswing is now reduced to 45 degrees, this is around tour average and the reason you hear the comment that the top players swing so easily but create such power is largely attributed to the ability to load the shaft Picture 3.

and angle fully in the early part of the downswing. This creates stress on the shaft, called loading and angular catch up speed. Compare picture 3 with picture 4 impact, you can see that the grip or hinge has travelled around 18 Picture 4. inches to impact but the club head considerably further around 8 feet creating angular catch up speed. This angle does not need to be manually released; the outward pull of the swing will take care of this. The only other important point to note in Picture 4 is that the shaft is leaning forward, this creates a pulled force rather than pushed - far more stable on off centre hits. My next thoughts are going to turn to drills that you can do to improve areas of your swing, have fun and great golf

No catching Hooper Mark Hooper of Rayleigh Golf Range has confirmed his place in the Titleist PGA Play-Offs in Turkey on November 23 and 25. He was never put under pressure as he carved out victory in the Virgin Atlantic Classic at Stock Brook Country Club by five shots with rounds of 67 and 68. He was nine under par for the tournament which was the fifth of six East order of merit events arranged this season. Hooper had already won the Weston Homes/ Bishop’s Stortford Classic in June. Hooper’s domination of the region this year has been achieved despite a niggling back injury that has troubled him for almost a year. Hooper said: “I used ice on my back before both rounds and went swimming to try to ease the problem. I have an appointment for another check-up with a specialist very soon. I am off on holiday in Portugal without golf clubs and hope that the rest will help ease the problem. I was given great help by my caddy, Lewis Atkinson, who is a professional at Stock Brook and knows the greens so well.” Hooper had six birdies on the second day which came in pairs. Those at the third and fourth eased the pressure as the closest rivals started to fall away. Two more at the Mark Hooper of Rayleigh Golf Range(left) with caddy ninth and 10th kept the momentum going Lewis Atkinson who is a touring professional. while those at the 15th and 16th meant there could be no repeat of last year when he let a commanding position slip in the closing stages of the corresponding event. “My four-iron to within fivefeet of the pin at the 198-yard 15th was my best shot of the day. “I plan to play in the PGA East Anglian Championship at The Rayleigh Club at the end of September which is very close to where I live.” Jason Levermore, appointed as head professional at Channels Golf Club earlier this year, is being encouraged to by his club’s proprietors to continue to play tournament golf. He shared joint second place with Rhys Piper of Hartswood who both finished on four under par. Piper had three successive birdies around the turn to lift him from 44th place in the order of merit. Levermore, last year’s runaway winner of the East order of merit, is poised for a top three finish this time around as the battle for the final two places for the Play-Offs in Turkey livens up. There were 24 eagles over the two days. Matthew Cousens of Bushey Golf and Country Club and Paul Curry, former PGA European Tour and United States PGA Tour star, both had two. Curry lives most of the year in Florida. Leading scores 135: Mark Hooper (Rayleigh Golf Range) 67 68 (£2000). 140: Jason Levermore (Channels) 72 68, Rhys Piper (Hartswood) 71 69 (both £975). 141: Craig Housden (Little Channels) 71 70 (£550). 142: Daniel Poulter (Kartel Golf) 72 70. 143: Mark Davis (Thorndon Park) 72 71. 145: Paul Curry (Braintree) 73 72, Steve Cipa (South Essex Golf Centre) 73 72, Paul Hetherington (Great Hadham Golf and CC) 72 73, Matt Spencer (Mill Green) 70 75.

Can you shoot lower than your age? John Marner of Theydon Bois GC can, aged 72 with a 16 handicap shot level par, (69) for a net 53. This was a midweek stableford competition on Wednesday 7th August. He came in with a staggering 52 points. John has been a member of Theydon Bois golf club for 23 years and has never achieved any score like this before. His round consisted of 4 birdies, 10 pars and 4 bogeys. A lesson for all golfers, never give up.

‘Beefy’ keeps an iron grip on the Ashes Sir Ian Botham, Shane Warne, Andrew Strauss, Ricky Ponting and a host of cricketing legends captured the sporting flavour of the summer in the inaugural Foundation Ashes Golf Day at Stoke Park in Buckinghamshire. Proudly sponsored by leading clothing brand Loudmouth Golf, the England versus Australia charity match was fiercely contested and raised an impressive sum to be split between Beefy’s Foundation and the Shane Warne Foundation. The winning team of three was led by former England oneday skipper Adam Hollioake, who pipped the trio of Channel 5 cricket presenter and former Hampshire captain Mark Nicholas and commented “I helped England take the overall victory, but, as expected, with the likes of Jeff Thomson and Merv Hughes in their ranks, the Aussies didn’t lay down quietly, and Ponting took the honours for the longest drive of the day.” Loudmouth Golf is worn by many athletes including twotime major winning golfer, John Daly and other PGA and LPGA professionals. Loudmouth Golf products are sold worldwide at many shops and also available online at www.loudmouthgolf.com Sir Ian Botham, Sir Michael Parkinson and Report by golf business news

The Golden Eagles complete marathon of golf Last month, one senior and three juniors of Millers Barn GC took on the Macmillan 72 hole challenge. Getting up early to Tee off, they started their first round at 5.16 am, just as the sun was beginning to rise. The Golden Eagles team consisted of Faye Trigg 19, Chloe simper 15, Antony Betchley 23, and Abbie Henshall 13. The weather fortunately was not too hot. They carried on their trek around the course completing 45 holes before stopping for a lunch, kindly donated by Dominos Pizza, before setting off on their final 27 holes. Arriving on the 72nd hole, and finishing at 17.40 - 12 hrs and 24 mins later; exhausted, tired and aching but all still in good spirits, they all still appeared to be on a high, after putting their last balls. Applauded and welcomed back by family friends and onlookers, they were all glad to sit down and get their shoes off! - after an epic round of golf. Faye, Chloe and their team would like to thank everyone who sponsored them on the day, Millers for keeping the course clear for them to keep moving and to everybody who sponsored or donated to their fund or bought raffle tickets, if you would like to donate to Faye and Chloe’s team, please go to www.justgiving.com/teammillers72holechallenge 18

Olympian success at mid-amateur golf champs Olympic medallist and Braintree GC member Chloe Rogers came runner up to Charlotte Thomas in the final of the English women’s open mid-amateur championship at John O’Gaunt, Bedfordshire. Chloe, 28, helped the Team GB women’s hockey team win a bronze medal at London 2012. This year, she’s recharging her batteries and concentrating on her other sporting love of golf. Charlotte laid the foundations of her win with four consecutive birdies, starting on the par four third where she drove the green on the 268-yard hole. Chloe, meanwhile, was hanging on tight. The Braintree golfer had a couple of birdies of her own in that stretch and was just two down after the sixth. But, after a par putt stopped on the lip on the seventh and a tangle with the deep rough on the ninth, she was four down. She produced her own short-game magic on the 10th, where she got up and down from a difficult greenside bunker for a par three to win the hole. Leaderboard Photography But Charlotte’s bogey on 10 was one of only two she had during the final and, as she relentlessly secured the pars, she piled on the pressure. Chloe commented “Charlotte played very well and I just couldn’t do anything about it. She was top qualifier and she's been on top form all week. But I’ve loved it, I wasn’t expecting to get this far, so it’s been a bonus.” Chloe will head to Prestwick next for the British stroke play championship. Report by England Golf 21
Big Weekend at Ingrebourne Links PGA of England East Par 3 Championship 5th August 2013 Mark Hooper of Rayleigh Golf Range won the inaugural Ingrebourne Links par three championship with a three under par round of 24 over nine holes. He collected the first prize of £1000 thanks to birdies at three of his final four holes. Six players finished with two under par sharing the other £1000 in the prize fund. They were Stephen Harris (Harpenden), Richard Herring (Orsett), Samuel Chapple (Ashford Manor), Darren Turner (Ingrebourne Links), Mark Stokes (Rayleigh Golf Range) and Ian Ellis (Costessey Park). Chapple dropped a shot at the last while Ellis, in the final group, was three under with three to play but slipped up at the seventh. His birdie putts at the Mark Hooper receives his trophy and cheque for final two holes were just off line. £1000 from sponsor John Pryor. PGA in England This new par-three course, described by designer (East) secretary John Smith is on the left. Alan Walker as a "mini links", provided a tricky test for the professionals who enjoyed the challenge provided by small undulating greens similar to the Postage Stamp at Royal Troon. A 30-bay driving range is already in place and 27 championship holes should be completed in the next three years. Owner and event sponsor John Pryor said: "I am so pleased the professionals enjoyed the course. We will be staging another par-three championship next year and are considering making it over 18 holes." Nick Moncur is head PGA professional at Ingrebourne Links with Glen Brown and Darren Turner as PGA Coaches. Full membership of the par-three course is £295 for an adult, £245 for a senior over 60 and £99 for a junior under 18. Ingrebourne Links Golf Complex is also sponsoring the PGA in England East Autumn Classic at Aldeburgh and Thorpeness on October 3 and 4. Its reputation round the region is growing fast.
Essex Student Harry Brister wins Norfolk County Boys Championship. Harry, who will soon be commencing his 2nd year at the Lee Westwood Golf School at Stoke-by-Nayland in Essex, won the championship played at Kings Lynn Golf Club on a tight golf course. The tournament was played in tough, wet and windy conditions with Harry posting scores of 75 & 79 to take the victory. Tied after 36 holes, Harry shone through to win the championship in the first playoff hole, thriving under the pressure of having the title on the line. Harry said, “I knew after a certain stage par would be good enough, so I just continued with my game plan” Coach Simon Dainty comments “this is a great performance for Harry and we are extremely delighted with the result. He has deserved this win after working extremely hard this year and applying himself really well. He has really matured recently as a player and this has enabled him to perform at a much higher, more consistent level. His training and improvements at the school enabled him to perform under pressure and to win in a playoff where it’s all at stake is a great feeling for him” Harry now qualifies for the county U18 match play and the champions of champions EGU event at Woodhall Spa in September. 22

Whose Turn is it? This month I will focus upon a drill that you can use to determine the angle of your shoulder turn to check if you are turning effectively during the backswing. I often get asked the question “ Where should my shoulders point in the backswing” My response has become much clearer since my certification with Plane Truth Golf, Jim Hardy & Chris O’Connell. My reply to my clients question is based solely around the player’s specific swing issues and how they compliment with the arms and body to produce shot patterns. The easiest way to explain this is to look at the figures. Fig 1 & Fig 2 below which illustrates a drill to determine the current angle of your shoulder turn Fig 1 shows the grip end of the club (butt end) pointing vertically at the ground and inside the orange rod, where as Fig 2 shows the butt end of the club at a more horizontal angle, pointing outside the orange rod. Fig 1
Fig 2
So which one is correct? They both are depending upon your swing shape and other characteristics. Whichever illustration you replicate, have a look at Figure 3 which shows a drill which can be carried out to ensure your shoulders are turning to their maximum potential depending upon your flexibility and any physical limitations.* The grip of the club has clearly tuned parallel to the rod on the ground Fig 4 shows the grip of the club clearly having not turned behind the rod remaining closer to the lead foot (left) which can cause a number of swing faults and inconsistencies.

It is important to appreciate that we all swing very differently based upon a number of factors, so when visiting the range and the player next to you is working on a drill please do not assume that this is the most appropriate for your golf. *Never force your shoulder turn at any point during the backswing * Congratulations to Carole Birch for winning the Three Rivers Ladies Club Championship for the fourth time, a great achievement.Well done Sarah Bennett Plane Truth Golf Level 1 certiďŹ ed Instructor www.planetruthgolf.com Ladies Group Lessons commencing October 5th for 4 weeks please contact me directly for

After a warm welcome by Jan Collier Lady President of the Society and Frances Hughman Lady Captain of Theydon Bois all the captains took to the course for the traditional 4BBB competition. Thanks to Theydon Bois Golf Club for hosting the event and to Frances and her large band of ladies for looking after us all so well.
The winners are pictured receiving their prizes.

Jack wins at Schools Championship The U16 Nationals Schools Championships were held on the 22nd July at Bolton Old Links Golf Course where all U16 County Schools champions and runners up were eligable to compete. Jack Dyer of Rochford Hundred and Ryan Cox of Warley Park attended to represent Essex. The weather was dull and overcast. Two rounds on the Par 72 moorland course is a good test of golf with undulating fairways and windy conditions. Jack had an excellent 1 under par first round which put him tied in second place on the leaderboard 1 shot behind Owen Clarke of Formby golf Club. Ryan however didn’t fare so well with an 82. The second round saw Jack continue to hit the ball well. The first seven holes saw him holding a 4 shot lead over the chasing pack but after three bogies in four holes Jack dropped back towards the chasing group, seven pars later Jack finished with a round of 74 winning by 1 shot from Luke Northwood of Kenilworth Golf Club who managed a 70 in round 2. Ryan had a better second round with a 76 finishing in a creditable 19th place. Congratuations go to Jack as not only did he win the championship but he also secured an England cap by being selected to play in the England v Wales International in August.

Stop at the Top to get the Swing in Sequence Two problems that a lot of golfers face is that their swing gets out of the correct sequence or their impulse to hit the ball from the top of the swing causes them to come over the top and hit poor shots. All good swings will be in the proper sequence where the body, arms and club work together. A great drill is to practice hitting shots by stopping at the top of your swing. Hit some shots with an 8 iron and aim to stop for 3 seconds at the top of your backswing. This will do a number of things for you. Have a friend check that you actually are stopping as sometimes you may perceive that you are stopping, but you actually are not.
Swing & Stop at the top with your body, arms & club at the same time Hold at the top for 3 seconds
Then swing through....
• You will get to the top of your swing with the body, arms and club at the same time increasing the chance you will swing through the shot in sequence. • Stopping at the top will improve the rhythm of your backswing and remove the impulse to hit the ball with your move away from the ball. • Improve your timing of your swing by giving you a sense of when to accelerate through the shot. • You will learn how to bring the club down on the correct plane, instead of the hit impulse causing you to come over the top. As you get better at this drill you should notice that the ball goes about the same distance as your normal swing and you will get a better sense of how to add power to your shots. Have fun with this and it may be harder to do than you first think.

Channels youngsters off to Woodhall Spa A trio of young golfers from Channels Golf Club, in Little Waltham, Chelmsford, will represent Essex in the Junior Champion Club tournament at Woodhall Spa (August 10/11). Brothers Henry (15) and Callum Blanks (13), and 10-yearold Lily May Humphreys will take on 93 other promising young golfers from across the country on the renowned Bracken Course at England Golf’s headquarters. They earned the right to represent Essex following their recent success in the prestigious Faldo Wedge competition, an Essex Golf Union 18-hole Stableford event for under-18s. It was the first time a team from Channels had won the competition and Callum’s total of 42 Stableford points also won him the individual prize.
PING celebrates Hunter Mahan’s newborn with gold-plated putter PING’s long-held gold-plated-putter tradition experienced a first this week when Hunter Mahan was presented a gold-plated Scottsdale® TR™ Anser2 inscribed with his daughter’s name, birth date and vital statistics. Golf fans recall that in July Mahan was leading the RBC Canadian Open after two rounds when he got a call that his wife, Kandi, was in labour in Dallas. Only minutes from beginning the third round, Mahan immediately withdrew from the event and flew home for the birth of his first child, Zoe. “We’ll never know if Hunter would have held on to win that week,” said John Solheim, PING Chairman & CEO. “But the circumstances were so unique, we wanted to create a lasting memory for Hunter, Kandi and Zoe that would forever remind them of that special day. The birth of a child is a win any way you look at it, so we thought we’d have some fun with it. As is our tradition, we made two gold-plated versions of his Scottsdale TR Anser2 putter. One was given to Hunter and the other will reside in our Gold Putter Vault with more than 2,800 PING putters in Phoenix.” “That is really cool and above and beyond,” Mahan said from The Barclays, the first event in the FedExCup Playoffs. “I really appreciate this.” PING www.PING.com

Essex County News by Frank Tomlin, Press Officer, Essex County Golf Union
HIGH SUMMER – LOW GROSS SCORES: We are now at the busiest time of the year with a lot of golf being played at County and Club level. The courses on which county matches and tournaments have been played have without exception been presented in superb condition. This has contributed to both the enjoyment of the players and the quality of the golf that they played. Our thanks go to the greenkeepers of the host clubs. INDIVIDUAL SUCCESSES IN NATIONAL COMPETITIONS. Bobby Keeble (Crowlands Heath) did very well indeed to reach the quarter final of the Boys Amateur Championship. This event was played at the Royal Liverpool (Hoylake) and the Wallasey Golf Clubs from the 13th to the18th of August. No less than 252 players competed in the two strokeplay rounds. The top 64 qualified for the knockout matchplay rounds. Bobby won his first three matches, two of them by a comfortable margin, but lost the quarter final match at the third extra hole. To reach the last 8 in such a large field including players from many parts of the world is an achievement to be proud of. Jack Dyer (Rochford Hundred) won the English Schools’ Golf Association U16 Boys Championship returning a gross score of 1 over standard scratch. This 36 hole strokeplay event was played at Bolton Old Links on 22nd July. [Jack also won the Essex Boys Championship on his home course on 15th August]. Jack was then selected to represent England Schools against Wales In the match played at Lytham Green Golf Club, Lancashire, on Monday 19th August. He won his singles match 2 up and halved his foursomes match partnered by Elliot Fullalove (Braintree). Congratulations too to Elliot for being selected for the team. A VERY BUSY TIME FOR OUR YOUNGER PLAYERS. During the past few weeks, our youngsters have played a lot of golf and travelled many miles to events. The following list of matches and tournaments vividly illustrates this and gives a measure of their dedication and enthusiasm as well as that of their parents. Spare a thought too for our President, President Elect and Team Managers who attend these matches to support our players and represent our County. Now read on;

Ingrebourne Valley Ltd., the construction company, are in process of developing a new championship course, Ingrebourne Links on land very near the junction of the M25, the A13 and the Queen Elizabeth Bridge. An ideal spot for the South East Counties of the country to meet for golf matches in the future. Currently open is the new par three course based on the Augusta Par 3 that is used to host the players the day before the Masters championship. Ingrebourne Valley Ltd made the course over to Essex Golf Union for the day to host a Par three challenge to the county’s younger players. The course was presented beautifully with superb greens giving the 80 youngsters between the ages of 6 and 14 who took part, some playing for the first time, an enjoyable golfing experience. The County was not left to its own devices, with Ingrebourne Valley Ltd providing breakfast and lunch for the players and their parents. It also attracted significant prizes from a variety of sponsors and a goodie bag full of golfing needs, making it a particularly attractive competition for the kids. In addition Nick Moncur, the club professional, provided free advice to the youngsters whilst they practiced with range balls provided by the club while Mike Nunn organised a putting competition. Add to all this some superb weather and the day was a huge success. Prizes were numerous and are listed over.

Valley for stepping in at short notice: he went on to compliment Colne Valley on the excellent condition of the course and the excellence of their catering. The smiling faces of the boys, their parents and their club Junior Organisers, spoke volumes about the success of the day and the quality of Colne Valley Golf Club’s hospitality. The Fred Stillwell Trophy was first presented in 1996 by Fred Stillwell, a past President of the County Golf Union. The trophy for the U14 Championship was first presented in 2001 by Ted Gaffney, also one of our Past Presidents. These competitions have traditionally been played at Maylands where Fred Stillwell was a past Captain and Phyllis is still a member. Frank Tomlin

ESSEX BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP This year the Boys Championship was held at Rochford Hundred Golf Club. The weather was sunny and warm with the course presented in excellent condition. Many of the competitors found the course difficult in the morning round with the prevailing wind proving to be a key factor, Jack Dyer from Rochford Hundred Golf Club posted the best score

on countback with a level par gross 71. As the morning round was designated a qualifying competition for the Telegraph Junior Championships Jack will now go through to the Final stages. The afternoon round produced similar scoring, the pick of the scores coming from Jack Phillips (Bentley) on countback who recorded a 2 over par round of 73. However, with both rounds completed it was Rochford Hundred members who occupied the top three slots with Jack Dyer in first place with a championship winning combined total of 144, Bradley Bawden in second place with 145 and Taylor Carter third with 146. The Under 16 Championship was also won by Jack Dyer. In second place was Christopher Grant (Thorpe Hall) with a total score of 147. Ryan Cox (Warley Park) was in third place with 148. The Boys Club Team Championship is played in conjunction with the Boys Championship, with the best 2 aggregate scores from each club counting. This year’s winners were Jack Dyer and Bradley Bawden from Rochford Hundred with a total score of 289. In second place were Sam O’Brien and Thomas Hatton from Stoke by Nayland with a total score of 300. Many thanks to Rochford Hundred Golf Club members or their help and hospitality on the day, and for providing ball spotters and helpers which assured the smooth running of the event.
U12 BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP AND BRIAN FULLER TROPHY The attendance for this year’s competition was brilliant, 44 entries of which 5 were girls. The weather was warm and pleasant and there was some great scores reached despite many players struggling with the last hole. James Styles (Chigwell) won the U12 Boys Championship with a gross 73 with Jack Moutell (Playgolf Colchester) taking second place with 74 and Harvey Payne (Braintree) in third place with 78 on countback. The winner of the Brian Fuller Trophy with a net 56 was Daniel Nicolls ( Frinton) with James Styles(Chigwell) in second place with a net 57 and Jordon Thompson (Crowlands Heath) in third place with a net 58 on countback. The winner of the girls prize in the Brain Fuller Trophy was Ysobel Lush (Langdon Hills) with a nett 58. It was good to see more girls entering this event, unfortunately for Lily May Humphries who had the lowest gross score of the day and Harriet Lynch, the girls scores don’t count in the U12 Championship, but Continued over

SOUTH EAST SENIORS Essex Seniors V Bedfordshire Seniors Played at The Bedfordshire Golf Club on Monday 5th August 2013 After a little confusion as to what ‘Bedford’ Golf Club we were meant to play, the Essex Seniors played their best golf of the year to run out comfortable winners. Relatively new players Trevor Patmore, Talat Buta and Geoff Tidder all won and with some more new faces expected next year the future looks promising. The course and hospitality were both excellent and we face the foursomes on the 9th August with renewed optimism. &

However Bedford came back strongly in the afternoon singles, playing some excellent golf and holding Essex to a 4-4 draw. The overall result being Essex 7 Bedford 5. Essex Team Captain, Jordan Wallace, won both of his matches, as indeed he did on each of the previous matches. Mason Papple and Tom Duggan both had early wins, Sam Bray won 2&1 to give us the winning point. Congratulations to all the team on a job well done. SKEVINGTON SALVER 2013 ESSEX V BEDFORDSHIRE V NORFOLK V SUFFOLK VENUE: - The Warren G.C Date: - 9th August 2013 At last we had a beautiful day devoid of wind and rain that we have become used to over the last few matches. The clubhouse and surrounding golf course was a treat to the eyes with beautifully cut fairways and the greens look like oases of dark green. A spectacle of golf was sure to follow with Essex hoping to retain both the Salver and team prize. The morning round of 9 holes stroke play got under way under the watchful eye of Kevin Holland, the starter and our referee Phil Kirkham. Most of the boys found that their course management skills were lacking, often being out of position off the tee due to taking too much club. The greens presented another set of problems with borrows exacerbated by the speed being 10 on the stimp meter causing many to three putt. Walking round the course I witnessed many glum faces and heard many tales of woe. After the morning round, the first 18 were only separated by 3 shots with Alex Bithrey (Beds) with a gross 37 followed by 2 further Beds boys on 38. The nearest Essex boys were Bailee Curran and Connor Morris both on 38 with Sam O’Brien (U16 Captain), Louis Lazarus and Callum Hilton one shot further back on 39 - Par is 35. “Beware the stalking horse”!! In the afternoon we were able to get all the 11 games off in less than the allotted time of 1hr 20mins. Conditions again were fine with plenty of sun and little or no wind. All the Essex boys to a man were determined to improve on their morning scores and set to with a sense of grim determination. Again walking around, the same glum looks with the odd exception of one Bedfordshire boy who stated that he was 4 under after 9 holes but most were +2 or more. On the back 9 a pattern was beginning to emerge of the early leaders falling away and the match becoming more open. Some of the Essex boys were having a bad day with issues of position and putting again raising their ugly heads. Alex Bithrey (AM leader) carded a gross 75 – 5 shots
The Heart of Golf in Essex. www.essexgolfer.com
www.essexgolfunion.org
over par. Sam O’Brien came in with a gross 72 and for a while looking as though he would win the day. Next Essex boy, Bailee Curran came in with a 74, meanwhile, William Bond of Skevington Trophy 2013 Bedfordshire Winner Callum Hillton had come in with a matching score to Sam but edged him on count back. Oh where was our winner from Essex? All of a sudden from nowhere came Jack Dyer who started the afternoon 3 shots back but ďŹ nished the closing holes with 2 birdies and an eagle giving him level par on the P.M. round and placing him top of the leader board – now we were buzzing. This was immediately following by Callum Hilton (our stalking horse) who was 2 shots back after the morning round but had been 1 – 2 under par for most of the round and ďŹ nished with a 69 – 1 under par. Callum was the only boy to play under par in a ďŹ eld of 32 – an excellent performance. This gave Callum the win with an overall 27 holes gross score of 108, a 3 shot lead over Jack Dyer (runner-up on count back) with 111. Essex had retained the Skevington Salver. What a result – What a day. Best Nett was Kieran Ashman (Bedfordshire) with 103 Team Prize – The Bob Bagshaw Trophy was won by Bedfordshire

We have a couple of events to report upon: On July 28th, we held the Third Junior Pro/Am at Frinton. It was extremely well supported and 16 teams took part. Top Professional was Jason Levermore with a -4 score of 67 and in second was Matt Stables with 69 and Clacton's Sam Teer in third with 71. In the team event, the Channels team of Charlie Nibbs with Joseph Hemley Tucker and Harley Smith won with 84 points followed by Sam Teer and his team of Riley Faulkener and Alfie Barnes with 80 points. Jason Levermore ably assisted by Josh Cardy and Henry Blanks was in third place. It was a great day and thank you to all who supported it.
James Gurry and his young partners at the Junior Pro/Am. It would be rude to talk about birthdays but in mid August, Mr Tony Stubbings of Channels had quite a birthday celebration with an unusual guest of honour - The Ryder Cup. I don't know what was more popular - the golf or having a picture taken with the Ryder Cup but we all had a brilliant day nonetheless. The top Professional score came from Mark Hooper and Andy Pestell with -1 71's. In the team event, Mark Talbott accompanied by his team of Junior Captain Josh Cardy, Charlie Nibbs, and Henry Blanks won with 87 points. Josh won the longest drive - it was long! and Roddy McLeod won the Nearest the Pin on the 17th and that was and that was pretty close!
Charlie Nibbs and his team with Scott Rusbridge
Tony Stubbings with The Ryder Cup along with a few friends!

Increase your golf power now! Most golfers know that being a great putter or a master of the short game can improve their handicap, but when asked if they would rather sink a 20 footer or smash a drive 300 yards the majority would pick the latter! At the end of the day, a 300 yard drive takes some time to develop, but adding around 15 yards to your drive can be done in as little as 3 months; it all depends on how much you put in - just like the rest of your game! In order to maximise your golf power, muscles in the following (4) areas need to be worked: 1- Upper Body (Chest, shoulders and back) 2- Arms (Grip, forearms, biceps and triceps) 3- Core (Abdominals, obliques and lower back) 4- Lower Body (Quadriceps, hamstrings and calves) The golf swing uses all the muscles in your body, and usually the first mistake I see golfers make when exercising is only working specific areas - like the core muscles. All your muscles need to be strong for maximum golf power! While there are many exercises you can do, not all exercises are equal! We need to do compound exercises [more than one joint is involved] which recruit the most muscle fibres and allow you to lift heavier weights over time, thereby getting you stronger faster! When I say heavier weights, please remember that you’re golfers and not powerlifters. You will become stronger because the body is quick to adapt, but you won’t end up looking like a bodybuilder – I guarantee that! One of the best exercises for golf power is the overhead press, which works the shoulders, upper portion of the chest and triceps, as well as indirectly working the gripping muscles of the hands, wrists and forearms. Using dumbbells, a bar, or anything that adds resistance (i.e., cans of food), hold the weight at ear height and press it overhead [you do not need to lock out the elbows]. Do this exercise with a light weight for 10 repetitions. Wait 3 days and do 2 sets of this exercise for 10 repetitions. Wait 4 days and do 3 sets of this exercise for 10 repetitions (on the 3rd set add a bit of weight). Wait 5 days and do 4 sets of this exercise for 10 repetitions - adding weight on sets 3 and 4. From then on it’s once a week - adding weight on each set.

I hit my driver high, so should I change to a lower loft? A question I get asked quite a bit. Fact is, believe it or not, changing from a 10.5 driver to a 9.5 driver will probably make no difference at all. Why? Well, we are talking about the 3 lofts in golf - Static, Dynamic and Spin. Spin loft we will leave to another time but let me define the other two: Static: Static or Stated Loft is the loft on the golf club as it sits in your bag. Whether it's an adjustable head or a fixed head, the loft will be pretty close to what is written on it. Dynamic: This is one of the key ingredients that contributes to the height of the shot. Dynamic Loft is the actual loft on the golf club as it strikes the golf ball. This can be very different to the Static Loft as this loft is determined by the Golfers swing and how the shaft reacts during the swing. In reality, a golfer could see a difference of eight to nine degrees in their Dynamic Loft with different golf shafts so you can now see how little the one degree difference in Static Loft actually makes. Both of the images below are from the same golfer (me), on the same day, with the same driver, same loft but with different golf shafts.

The Heart of Golf in Essex. www.essexgolfer.com
As you can see my 'Club Attack' changes hugely and in turn changes my Dynamic Loft. Between these two shots, there was roughly seven degrees of difference in the launch angle and around thirty feet in height. With a higher ball flight, the 'Angle Of Descent' or the angle the ball comes out the sky will become steeper leading to less roll - giving a shorter drive all round. Another thing to consider here is the 'Ease Of Use Factor' when it comes to loft. In a nutshell, the lower the loft the more opportunity of increased side spin - so for many Golfers the quest for a stronger ball flight leads to a bigger slice. My moral here is simple, get a driver loft that suits you - don't try to make a swing that suits the driver's loft. THE RULES OF GOLF The new rules of golf at your fingertips New golf rules have been in force since 1st January 2012; it is therefore high time to get a new rule book for your golf bag. The best choice is “Golf Rules Quick Reference 2012-2015”. The multi award-winning, ringbound book has already sold more than a million copies and contains the answers to all the rules questions that commonly arise on the golf course. It is intended to be used while on the course, therefore it has a practical pocket-sized format, uses hard-wearing, water-repellent paper and has a sturdy protective cover. As every rules situation is illustrated (more than 170 graphics), players can find the right solution straight away. To sum it up, this little gem belongs in every golf bag.

David and Kevin complete The Notleys 100 Hole Challenge Congratulations need to go to The Notleys Golf Club Vice Chairman David White and Club Captain Kevin Whybrew, who successfully completed 100 holes of golf in one day for the excellent Little Havens charity. Continuing a tradition of “Longest Day” charity golf that now goes back six years, and has resulted in over £20,000 for MacMillan Cancer Support or Little Havens charities, Kevin and David started at 0430hrs and finished playing around 2130hrs, playing over five and half rounds of golf on the hilly and challenging Notleys Golf course. Supported by club staff and membership alike, and even ex-members like Neil Mitchell from Crondon Park, they managed to do the full hundred holes of golf, not only a wonderful achievement, but David even managed to stay in the 36 points and over category through all 5 rounds….and went on to shoot a fantastic score in the monthly competition the next day!!
On the left club Vice Chairman David White and on the right Club Captain Kevin Whybrew.
Club Vice Captain Chris Jordan stated, “what a challenge to complete, and what a gauntlet to throw down to the 2014 committee who need to up their game for the Longest Day next year.”

And Stretch…… With repeated matches and tournaments, ensure you keep flexibility and mobility not just externally but by what you ingest daily. Recent research encourages athletes and those prone to injuries to eat oily fish four times per week to boost those all important anti-inflammatory prostaglandins and prevent injuries. Aim for a hot bath post match and stretch out thoroughly – particularly the low back and hamstrings. Likewise, eat foods high in beneficial omega 3, 6 and 9. For omega 3 – herrings 6.4g of unsaturated fat per 40g, mackerel 9.6g per 40g, salmon 6.5g per 40g serving, and tuna in oil 5g per 40g. Drizzle the elixir of oils onto salad options – extra virgin olive oil onto a super green salad. Also, for margarine, pour pure extra virgin olive oil onto a saucer. Place in the refrigerator overnight and use this as your spread. For omega 6, snack on seeds. Just a fistful daily is immensely protective for joint function. Pumpkin seeds, flax seeds (linseed), sesame and sunflower seeds added to salads, muesli or just for nibbling are great for joints and preventing dropping energy levels. Oleic acid omega 9 – again reach for the olive oil to prevent clotting, boost anti-inflammatory agents, reduce cholesterol, and enhance longevity – no wonder there are some great Mediterranean golfers! 60

Clacton juniors beat the seniors On the hottest day of the year Clacton Seniors played Clacton Juniors for the Gage Cup. In keeping with tradition, Seniors Captain Jeff Sinnott presented the trophy to Juniors Captain Mitchell Buxton and said that "the juniors must practice harder”, as the juniors had only won this year’s match by 3 1/2 matches to 1 1/2 matches. The Seniors then bought lunch for the Juniors, all players had a very enjoyable day.
Relaxing in Epping When out delivering Essex Golfer magazine to the clubs of Essex last month, I had to do a double take when I saw a yoga class on the course at Epping Golf Club. Out of the way of golfer’s wayward shots, I thought what a peaceful setting to have a Yoga class. I discovered the class was run by Amy Bramble. to contact: amybrambleyoga@gmail.com
