ear The Team at Essex Style Magazine, Thank you so very much for the tickets to Farm Boy. My husband and I managed to go along on Sunday to the Mercury and what an amazing treat! Prime centre seats, lights went down and then action! The story was beautiful and well acted with creative echoes of the past. Certainly a real credit to Michael Morpurgo as a sequel to War Horse it contained many threads to the original best seller and held our undivided attention throughout. A touching story between grandfather and grandson that would mirror any bond seen today. We thoroughly enjoyed it! Kindest regards and thanks Michelle

Letter From the Editor Welcome to issue two of Essex Style Magazine. Before anything else, I must say how delighted I am with the response to the first. November started off with our launch party, hosted brilliantly by Sugar Hut. It was a great way to get things going, and we’ve exclusive pictures for you right from the heart of the event. As you’d expect, we have a Christmas special for you here, and believe me, there are plenty of festive treats. We have an exclusive interview with Shane Richie, who is performing in Cinderella at the Cliffs Pavilion, as well as our take on what’s hot, not and downright icy this Christmas, alongside a fantastic competition. I’d like to thank this month’s advertisers, but I must admit, we did have to turn some away as we filled up so quickly. I urge you to act fast for January! As usual, enjoy your copy of ESM and keep safe. Your feedback is always appreciated. Lots of Love Terrie Bennett, Acting Editor

We’re so happy with how successful they have been since we put them together, with their photo shoot for Zoo Magazine being another of their highlights this month. So what have we got coming up this month? Well, we’re pleased to announce that we will be open on two Sundays in December – the 2nd and the 23rd. We’ll also be open for 11 days around Christmas including Christmas Eve and Boxing Day. Unfortunately we will not be open on the 25th, but that doesn’t matter, right? We’ll all be more concerned about how much turkey we’re scoffing and watching our dear old December Column granny Pat getting more than a little tipsy on her annual glass of sherry! After that, our attentions turn to New Year’s Eve. Hip-hip…? By Trevor Elsey, ‘Our Man Inside.’ We’ve got a big celebration going on at the club, so it really will be the place to be. o we’re already into December, and at Sugar Hut that As I mentioned, Early Bird Tickets are going fast. There’s can only mean one thing: we’re about to get incredibly no set date for when the deal ends, but when they’re gone, busy! they’re gone and we wouldn’t want you to miss out on them That’s not to say the month just gone hasn’t been. We’ve been happy to welcome so many special guests throughout at the discounted rate of £35! Well that’s about it from me for this month. I hope you enjoy the magazine, and don’t November, including you, this magazine’s readers. As you will know, Sugar Hut’s relationship with Essex Style forget to come and visit us! Magazine is growing ever stronger, and we were delighted Remember, “It’s not just a nightclub, It’s a lifestyle!” to welcome the team to the club for their launch party. I would like to put on record what a successful night I thought it was. The guests were treated to some great performances on the night; no more so than when Scott Robinson took us back to the 90’s with some of the smash hits from his days with the band 5ive. But that wasn’t where the fun ended in November – not by any stretch. We felt very privileged to welcome a real life princess to Sugar Hut, all the way from the United Arab Emirates. How good is that?! She came along with everyone’s favourite X Factor Alexandra Burke, but we were equally pleased to host Soccer AM’s Tubes, Philip Oliver and Wayne Lineker. Talking of Soccer AM, actually, we’ve done quite a bit with the good people from Sky Sports recently. Well, our Sugar Hut Honeys have, anyway. Not only did the girls do some filming with our friends at Colchester United FC for the popular Saturday morning programme, but they appeared on the network’s fishing show and Sky Sports News.

Toy Story I t seems the new trend for 2012 is to reinvent the old. From Ker-Plunk to cuddly toys, toy makers are finding new ways to recreate old favorites for the 21st Century. These may just be add-ons or small tweaks, but plenty of companies are finding ways to reimagine old favorites with high-tech or digital components, or a new focus on learning and education.
With the new city status of Chelmsford, there is a new Monopoly game centred on it. We can’t wait to have a play with the family on Christmas day. With plenty of reinvented options to choose from, see if you can spot any of the old favorites.

Get The (Christmas) Party Started! We’re so excited for the coming party season; we’ve already been asking the fashion insiders what their predictions are for the trends this year.
I
t looks like old favourite, sequins will be popular again, with some gorgeous styles about this year. La Boutique being a personal favourite, with bodycon and peplum styles featuring heavily in their new collection. Metallics are a firm favourite of celebrities at the moment, and they don’t seem to be showing any signs of stopping this trend. Shops have obviously picked up on this and Christmas is definitely a time you can get away with wearing something as bold as this. Be aware though, this style will highlight any unfortunate lumps and bumps you may wish to hide. This is a look only for the brave! A surprise style that has appeared is maxi dresses. Usually signed off as a laidback summer style, the Winter version is more glamorous. Pick a sparkly one for Christmas chic and wear with some fierce jewellery to finish off the look. Don’t go too over the top
though, you don’t want to end up looking like a Christmas tree! Red is a theme that has cropped up, easily transferred into any of the other styles. A red sequin dress for example. Red will be a big hitter this season, and is THE colour to wear if you want to get noticed. Scarlet, tomato and cherry tones are the ones to look out for. Slick on red lipstick to match and keep jewellery to a minimum, let the dress do the talking. Think Jessica Rabbit and you cant go far wrong.
Personally we feel this is a look that the 80’s got right, with berry tones being a big hit this season, this is a look that could really work at your Christmas do. Just don’t eat too much, or invest in some Spanx!

Lace and ruffles are looking popular, to go for a more romantic look. Team with colourful tights and T-bar sandals to make more of an impression. Think chiffon shirts and little shorts. If this look is a bit too girly, team with tough accessories, studded belts and statement bracelets.
So Couture, Red Sequin Pencil Dress £115, www.laboutiqueessex.co.uk

Shane Richie A
s far as sensational returns go, Shane Richie is up there with the very best. His return to Eastenders in 2010 was drama of the highest order.
So it should not come as a great surprise that the man many will know as ‘Alfie’ is returning to Southend this Christmas for the Panto at the Cliffs Pavilion. Last year Richie was the star turn in their production of Aladdin, but will this year be taking on the role of the lovable Buttons in Cinderella. Indeed, with growing commitments to Eastenders in the weeks leading up to Christmas, a return to the stage was not originally on his agenda. Richie said: “I honestly was not going to do pantomime this season, as my story-lines are building for Christmas, with long days filming.” It was only when the producers of some of the top pantomimes up and down the country, Qdos Entertainment, came calling that Richie was tempted. The fact that the shows would once again be taking place in Essex, was certainly another big draw for Richie. “When Qdos spoke to my manager, saying that they would make my short holiday period work over the Christmas holidays to fit in with my schedule, I could not resist,” he admitted. “I genuinely like Essex and Southend, as they are my kind of people. They are 16 ES
out for a laugh with the family, in British theatre tradition, which is what panto is. “Whether you are three years old, or one-hundred years old, you still love it. Panto is for everyone.” Although Aladdin was such a huge success last year, Richie said this year’s production will be even bigger and even better. He said: “It has to be better. I would not return so quickly, otherwise! I am not going to let the people of Southend and Essex down. Just wait and see.” Whilst Richie has turned his hand to many different challenges through his long and successful career, he has always held a special place in his heart for the traditional Christmas productions. Down the years he has starred in countless pantomimes, joking that he had lost count and only the producer would know how many he had starred in. He added: “Panto is a law unto itself. I cannot think of any other form of theatre you can compare it with. It is totally stand alone.” Part of the appeal of shows such as Cinderella and Aladdin is the interaction with the audience with many well known songs for them to sing along with. Having had hits with ‘I’m
Your Man’ and ‘Once Around The Sun’, as well as having starred in musicals, ‘Boogie Nights’ and
www.essextylemagazine.co.uk
‘Grease’, Richie admitted he has been able to draw upon those experiences.
Pantomime “I think it is helpful, but not imperative,” he said. “It is really about understanding that there is a story, songs and dance – but most importantly, comedy. “I don’t believe the audi-
ence have come out just for a story or for a song. They want to go home having had the total package – a total experience. But most of all, to have laughed.” With comedy playing such a key role in panto, and Richie having done a lot of comedy in his past, he hopes to have a big input in the creative process, writing many of the gags and oneliners that are synonymous with that particular form of theatre. However, he will not be the only one having his say in that respect. Comedian Peter Piper is returning to the show once again, and he too will be involved in the scripting of the jokes. Furthermore, executive producer Jon Conway will be able to draw upon his extensive pantomime
“This Christmas the popular and magical pantomime, returns to the Cliffs Pavillion stage”
experience when it comes to the writing. Richie says that panto will always draw crowds in this country, but admits it is not something that will ever be as big in other parts of the world. He said: “It is the British sense of humour. I’m not sure many other countries would get it. The Ugly Sisters are fellers, Buttons loves Cinderella, and Cinderella fancies the prince. “Buttons is a lovable rogue and always wants to please, although love does not always flow freely with him and Cinderella.” And whilst it is clear Shane Richie is a busy man right now, there is little sign of him slowing down any time soon. He added: “I have so many plans and lots of pantomimes left in me. But for now my concentration is on my acting and getting this year’s Cinderella at The Cliffs off to a fine season.” Paul Driscoll, marketing manager at Southend Cliffs Pavilion Theatre, admitted his delight to welcome Shane Richie back for another year, and is hoping to see this year’s shows build on last year’s success. He said: “After last year’s record-breaking success we are obviously delighted to have Shane returning this year. “He has clearly not lost his appeal since sales are already ahead of last year’s

at this time and it looks as though it could well sell out.” With tickets selling fast, the theatre are recommending that anyone wanting to see the show gets their tickets booked well in advance to avoid disappointment. Cinderella is running at the Southend Cliffs

Darren Kennedy ESSEX STYLE MAGAZINE This month our resident Fashion Guru & TV Presenter Darren Kennedy tackles your sartorial dilemmas in the run up to party season. Q. I would love to find one dress or outfit that will take me through a couple of dressy Christmas nights and my son’s confirmation in February. I’m 42, blonde, size 10-12 with a smallish bust and chunky thighs! My budget is £250 max. Really appreciate your help. Suzie. A. There’s only one thing for it, the little black dress, or LBD. The ultimate piece in sartorial versatility, the LBD is an absolute musthave when multiple wears are required on a limited budget. A fail safe of sorts, your LBD doesn’t mean you can’t have fun and this is where your accessories come into play on a whole new level. Mint Velvet’s super flattering black shift dress with ruched detail and sheer mesh embroidered chest panel is party ready (£169). For a night out keep the styling simple and team it with vertiginous heels and an eye-catching bag. Primark’s gold oversized sequined clutch (£10) will do the trick while keeping you well within budget. Awear’s black embellished shoulder dress is a playful, feminine number (£55). I really like the subtle sequin detailing at the waist and the floaty skirt will skim over your thighs. Pair with an ankle boot such as the ‘Oscar’ style from Hobbs (£160) and a touch of tartan with this contrast sleeve blazer from Love Label (£59, Littlewoods). If tartan is not to your taste, try Primark’s boucle jacket (£29) or Vero Moda’s hounds tooth wool jacket with bell sleeves (£69.95). For another look, mix it up completely by piling on the layers and wearing your LBD as a skirt. For instance, a crisp shirt layered with H&M’s blue embellished sweater (£99) will create a cool interesting look.
A. Beautiful, practical and chic, leather is undeniably one of this winter’s top line trends having appeared on just about every designer catwalk for Autumn Winter 2012. This new wave of leather is not limited to only jackets or accessories. Everything from skater skirts, to leggings, crop tops and dresses have been given a leather overhaul. A good quality leather shift dress, such as this one from Phase Eight (£317), is a future wardrobe hero and a great investment piece. If full leather doesn’t appeal, leather trims and touches allow for a more subtle approach. Hobbs’ Regency panel dress has a leather peplum (£205) while Next’s ivory shift dress has a faux leather trim at the shoulders and waist (£43). The leather-look burgundy skirt by Dahlia with scalloped hem and cutwork detailing ticks two of this season’s trend boxes with leather and berry tones. A|wear have a similar style black PU skater skirt (£35). Wear this with a cool knit such as the Mr Fox sequin jumper (£59, Monsoon Fusion) or the jewel-embellished one at Warehouse (£63) for an effortlessly cool winwter look.
Q. I’ve starting walking to work to get in shape for Christmas. It’s only a short walk but as the weather gets colder I’d like to have a good cover-up for my commute and something that I can wear in the evening if I decide to go out straight from the office? Jane, 29. A. If you’re looking for an investment, the charcoal grey ‘Arkansas’ from Tommy Hilfiger is a luxe, durable piece that will see you through many winters. A long style broad collar coat, crafted from luxurious lamb shearling, it epitomises winter chic (£1,499). A more affordable option is the sequin cocoon coat from Gallery at Dunnes Stores (£85). Come the depths of winter, you’ll most likely need plenty of layers underneath to keep you warm. That said, cocoon shapes are big news this season and will earn you instant fashion kudos. The ‘Ryder’ quilted coat at Monsoon (£115) taps into the trend for all things heritage and will certainly keep you warm without sacrificing your style credentials. Q. From what I’ve been reading leather is a “must-have” for my wardrobe this winter. At 36, I’m wondering what leather pieces would you recommend and where is the best place to buy on the high street? Monica.

ssex is no stranger to rich affluent men and woman being part of its social scene. But it’s the rags to riches stories that really make our ears prick up! New millionaires are being created all the time, just look at some of the TOWIE celebs, Amy Child alone is reported to have earned in the region of £10 million pounds in the past 12 months! That’s some feat for a nail technician from Brentwood! Good on you Amy! It’s also rumoured that there are more millionaires in the Essex County than anywhere else in the country. Even big city bankers are now to be found in the big mansion houses of Danbury and Chelmsford. This month ESM looks at the top ten richest residents of Essex and how they made their millions, we have not included anyone who inherited their fortune instead concentrating on those rags to riches stories;
2) Mark Dixon: £700 million
Mark Dixon started his business life on a bike, selling sandwiches around Chelmsford to office blocks. Now, his business is estimated to be worth around £700 million. Not bad for someone who left school at 16 and who worked as a hot dog salesman, baker and sandwich distributor before founding Regus, a company that rents office space by the hour, day, week or month. Regus is the eighth company Mr Dixon has founded. He left school at 16 despite passing nine O-levels.
3) Bhikhu and Vijay Patel. Est: £500million
1) Lord Alan Sugar. Est: £750million A household name now with his iconic must-watch yearly Young Apprentice and The Apprentice shows. Sir Alan, is without doubt a rags to riches story. Starting life out in the East End of London, Sir Alan worked his way up to being known as the richest man in Essex with the help of his Brentwood based computer group, Amstrad.

Owners of the Waymade Healthcare company, the Patel brothers both own the Basildon based operations. After completing their early education in Africa, they moved to England to make their fortune. Vijay graduated from the College of Pharmacy in Leicester and Bhikhu, after taking A Levels at Kilburn Polytechnic, gained a place at Bristol University to read architecture. Five years after qualifying, he invested £15,000 in his first business two newsagent shops in Woolwich, London. Vijay opened his first pharmacy in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, in 1975. The business grew rapidly, developing into a chain of 20 outlets. In the early 1980s the company then expanded into buying and supplying medicines for its own chain, and then diversified into supplying hospitals and wholesalers. Bhikhu joined the business to bring some financial control to the fast-growing operation and together in 1984, they founded Waymade Healthcare. Some years later they sold all but three of 5) David and Victoria their pharmacies to concentrate on the supply of high quality, Beckham: affordable medicines for those who need it. Their products are available in more than 100 countries.Another rags to riches story £265 million Over the years, the country has that truly makes these entrepreneurs deserve their place on the watched the Beckham story, warts ww Essex Rich list! and all. 6) Barrie and Tony Drewitt-Barlow: £265 million
List
Known in the UK and across the world as the UK’s first gay dads, Barrie and Tony again started from humble beginnings. Growing up in Manchester UK on England’s largest council estates, the guys met in the mid 80’s and have been a couple for over 25 years and moved to Essex over 20 years ago, living in Danbury. Barrie, a registered social worker and Tony a dermatologist, started their pharmaceutical testing business in the 1990’s. After testing new products for other companies for many years, they sold their first company for a reported £11 million to a US Clinical Research Company. The pair went on to manufacturing and creating new brands for high street stores wanting to have their own product labels. Today the pair own multiple companies around the world, with their now famous Aspen Clinical Research company turning over some £30million per year globally and their newly establish British Surrogacy Centre making global news, the pair have helped to create families in over 40 countries around the world. In one year alone, the company helped 63 couples start a family, at a minimum of $100,000, this alone generated over $6 million in revenue for the company!
7) Jamie Oliver: £100 million
Born on 27th May 1975, Jamie is the youngest of our top ten ragesto-riches. Born in Clavering Essex, he is married to Juliette Norton. They have four children, Petal, Honey Rosie, Daisy Pamela, and Maurice. Jamie made his money as a chef, restaurateur, and now Media personality. Oliver has undertaken a number of crusades. His Fifteen restaurants train disadvantaged young people to be chefs; he has taken on Turkey Twizzlers, campaigning for freshly prepared meals in place of the freezer-to-fryer fare served up in British schools, and he taught those as yet untouched by the Jamie effect how to cook proper dinners in the Ministry of Food. He has even tried to trim the fat from American obesity in Food Revolution.
class backgrounds, their combined earning power has created a fortune of an estimated £265 million. Everyone will know something on this story, the footballer and the pop star. Truly a fantastic love story too.
9) Aaron Lennon: £15 million
Known to his friends as Azza, this young Tottenham winger recently put his house on the market for £3million. Along with his other assets, ESM has estimated his wealth to be around £15 million. Living in Epping, this is a wanna-be-wags dream man we thinks!
8) Mick Norcross: £20 million
Mick Norcross, business man and entrepreneur, now has one of the biggest media profiles than any other nightclub owner in the UK thanks to the Only Way Is Essex TV program. Mick, known locally as a generous benefactor and celebrity, sees many stars of the TV and even football field show up at his Brentwood venue. Mick, who recently bought the Grand Hotel in Leigh on Sea, is investing upwards of £8million pounds to refurbish it! We can’t wait!
10) Russell Brand: £15 million

Old Court Theatre Since re-opening its doors again, just over a month ago, The Old Court Theatre in Chelmsford has found itself going from strength to strength. November saw them launch their incredibly successful stage version of Blackadder, with members of the Chelmsford Theatre Workshop all coming together to put the production on. With interest growing, they are already planning for the New Year, with auditions for Blackbird having already taken place. Before that, however, there is the small issue of December to concentrate on, with Neil Simon’s exciting Broadway play, The Odd Couple, being brought to Essex’s county town. Theatre Manager, Tonio Ellis is delighted with the start the theatre has made, and is looking forward to their upcoming events. He said: “We’re so happy to see that the theatre as it is now. The restoration took around four weeks, but it will be years before we ever need to do anything like that again. “Whenever we have an audition, it’s an open audition, so anyone can come in off the street and people are always so impressed. “The artistic director meets with current members who want to put an idea forward, and train them up as directors as well. “There is a real family feel about the place.”

How a Christmas Tree Comes To Be
N
o Christmas scene would be complete without the traditional decorated tree. You simply never realise how much work goes in behind the scenes when it comes to preparing one. Martin Shurley runs Essex’s biggest Christmas tree farm, based in Hawkwell, just outside Southend. It is amazing how much effort goes into preparing just one tree. Many people take it for granted that a tree will be ready for them to collect each year; cut and able to retain its needles. Chances are it is a Nordmann Fir that has been growing for the last six

Hatfield Peverel is no stranger to fine dining. For many years the king of the block has been the Blue Strawberry and more recently just down the road, the Lion Inn at Boreham, BUT, times they are a-changing! The William B opened its doors recently with a glamorous event attended by many of the beautiful people of Essex, including socialite and ESM features writer, Samantha Cochrane. Sam came into the office the next day bragging about her wonderful evening and raving about the menu, so we felt we had to put them to the test! This time, no children in tow, Tony and I booked a table, through my assistant. Lunch time table for two… Easy you would think, NO! Of course not. By the time we arrived for our table at 12.30 on Tuesday 6th November, we were a week late! YES, a whole week! I tell you, you cannot find the staff these days! Anyway, jumping ahead a little, it turned out to be well worth the wait! The William B can be found on The Street, Hatfield Peverel, on the opposite side of the road to the famous Blue Strawberry. Funnily, I pass this building every day on my way to the office, so I have eagerly waited for the opening ever since I saw it had been sold, and work to refurbish it had begun. The very fresh looking exterior led me to believe that the inside was going to be just as plush; no disappointment was found in that regard. We parked in the large car park outside and entered the building from the side entrance. We were welcomed by a very tall attractive ES 32

Christmas is coming and it isn’t just the goose that’s getting fat. By now you will, no doubt, already planning your Christmas shopping, who to send cards to and which parties to attend. So, why not get a head start on your New Year’s health and fitness resolutions too.
When hosting festivities at your home welcome your guests with a spiced fruit punch instead of mulled wine. We’re so used to asking people what they would like to drink when they arrive for a party. However, by taking the initiative of having a festive beverage to offer your guests on arrival you’ll save putting people on the spot and wasting time rummaging through the drinks cabinet when you should be entertaining. Remember it’s the atmosphere not the alcohol that gets the party started so the more fun you’re having the easier it will be for your guests to relax and have fun too.
Fit not FAT for christmas with soup. Paleo gluten free Christmas pudding Ingredients: 1000grams of mixed dried fruit made up of:125g Cherries 450g Jumbo raisins 200g Seedless raisins 225g Dried cranberries 2 apples peeled and chopped small 1 orange zest and juice 150ml brandy (optional) 6 free range organic eggs 250g palm shortening frozen before grating 350g pure maple syrup 175g almond flour/meal 1 tbs. coconut flour 1 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. allspice 1 tsp. cinnamon
Method
You will need 2 x 2lb pudding bowls or 4 x 1lb ones, greaseproof paper, a big saucepan, coconut oil and a pastry brush. In a large bowl, mix together the apples, orange juice, zest, grated palm shortening, beaten eggs and maple syrup. Add the flour, baking soda, dried fruit and spices Stir together adding the brandy if required. Divide the mixture into the pudding bowls leaving about an inch from the top if using 1lb pudding bowls and about 2 inches in the 2lb bowls to allow the puddings to rise. Place an oiled piece of greaseproof paper over the lid of the bowls and tie into position using extra string to form a handle for lifting the bowls out of the boiling water. Place puddings into a pan, add the water so its an inch from the top of the pudding bowls, bring to the boil and simmer for 6hrs, adding more hot water every 20mins or so. When cooked carefully remove the pudding bowls from the water and leave to cool. Wrap the cooled puddings (still in the pudding bowls) with greaseproof paper and foil as they will need to simmer again for approximately 30 minutes before being eaten. Best served hot.
Method
Put the yolks in a bowl (blender, food processor) with the mustard, if using, add 1 tsp. lemon juice and mix those ingredients together.
Paleo Mayonnaise Ingredients: 2 egg yolks 1 tsp. mustard (this is optional) 3 tsp. lemon juice 1/2 cup olive oil 1/2 cup coconut oil
Start whisking vigorously (blender or food processor on low) while dripping the oil very slowly, drop by drop in the beginning. You’re creating an emulsion and if you put too much oil in at once, it will separate and will be very hard to save. Continue to whisk as you add more oil, the emulsion will form and the mayonnaise will start to thicken and you can pour the oil faster at this point; When all the oil is incorporated and the mayonnaise is thick, add the rest of the lemon juice and season to taste with salt and pepper; Enjoy without guilt and store in the refrigerator! Top tip Add 1 tsp. spoon of tomato puree, a few drops of Tabasco sauce and dash of Worcestershire sauce to make a great Marie Rose sauce for your Christmas prawn cocktail

Analysis conducted by the pressure group found that although formaldehyde-free versions of Johnson’s Bay ‘No More Tears’ shampoo were available in some markets, the company stil used quaternium-15( a presevative that kills bacteria by releasing formaldehyde) in products sold in the US, Canada and China. “Clearly there is no need for Johnson and Johnson to expose babies to a known carcinogen, when the company is already making safer alternatives,’ commented Lisa Archer, director of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics at the Breast Cancer Fund. In response, J&J released a statement saying it is longer introducing new products with formaldehyde-releasing preservatives and has reduced its use of the chemical by 60% in the US and 33% globally over the past few years.
