Bobby Norris In his most candid and revealing interview yet, Bobby Cole Norris, from the ITV2 series The Only Way Is Essex, spoke exclusively to Essex Style about his search for love, how he never actually had to come out about his sexuality and how he is ready to become a dad. We took him to the stunning De Rougemont Manor Hotel in Brentwood for the big shoot.

alentine’s Day is a not one of Bobby Cole Norris’ favourite days of the year. He sees it all as being something of an act. This year, however, he is set to spend it as a singleton. Indeed, there is no doubt that he would rather spend it with someone he loves, and at 26-years-old, he certainly has DPELWLRQV WR Ă€QG VRPHRQH KH can settle down with. Twice before, Bobby has been with someone who could have been his ‘Mr Right’, having had relationships that have lasted three years and four years respectively. At a time when his career is taking off and the recognition he has hungered for, for so long, is starting to appear, he is in no PDG UXVK WR WDNH WKH Ă€UVW SHUVRQ who walks through the door! So for now, I’m happy looking forward to my career and getting some of the other projects that are hanging around, off the ground. Bobby admitted, however, that he worries that some people will be intimidated by his celebrity status, or motivated by reasons other than love.

“I think looking back now as an adult, the signs have always been there and I always must have known. “But by the age I could have known, you’ve got no concept of what sexuality is – I couldn’t really relate to anything. “Back in the 80s, when I was born, there wasn’t really a gay personality on television that you could look to; there wasn’t a gay character in soaps, for example. There really wasn’t anything, apart from drag, and that was never going to be me.â€? Whether it was simply for the fact that he wanted to live as much of a normal life as possible, or whether it was because he had doubts about his sexuality at the time, Bobby said he did have relationships with girls to begin with. “I had been with girls in the past RQ P\ MRXUQH\ WR Ă€QGLQJ ZKR Bobby really is,â€? he said. “But I soon realised that wasn’t me and that I was gay. “As I’ve got older, I’ve found P\ FRQĂ€GHQFH D ORW PRUH DQG I’ve realised now, at 26-years-old, that people are always going to judge you for something. Starting a family At the point of accepting the fact he was gay, Bobby admits he began to feel very depressed. All his life he had wanted to be a father, and all of a sudden, that dream appeared to have been snatched from him. Little did he know at that point, though, that such circumstances would not necessarily stop him from being able to start his own family. We asked Bobby about the recent rumours in the press that he was thinking about becoming a father through surrogacy. Many other same sex couples and single gay men have gone down that path recently, and he had been spotted talking to Britain’s Ă€UVW JD\ GDGV PLOOLRQDLUHV %DUULH and Tony Drewitt-Barlow at the recent Essex Fashion Week. He laughed: “I’ve always wanted to be a dad, I never thought that I would be in a position to be a dad because I’m a gay man. ´6HHLQJ WKH MRXUQH\ WKDW %DUULH and Tony have made and the path they forged for other gay people, I now realise that my dream can become a reality.â€? The topic of gay parentage is something that has been widely discussed for years now, but Bobby insists that if he has a son, the fact that the child will have a gay father will not mean he will turn out the same. Bobby said: “I think people ZRXOG MXVW DVVXPH WKDW LI , KDG D ODG , ZRXOG MXVW EULQJ KLP XS as a mini-me, which obviously is impossible. I’m so excited about it all. But what if his son or daughter turned out to be gay? Is it something he would be comfortable with? “Even if my son or daughter did turn out to be gay, that wouldn’t matter, I’d still love them absolutely unconditionally. “I think in this day and age, it really doesn’t matter what sexuality your child is, as long as they’re healthy and happy, that’s all I could ask for. 6LQFH PHHWLQJ %DUULH DQG 7RQ\ last year, Bobby has developed a close friendship with the couple and admitted that he has taken advice from them. “I’d be silly to not at least get some advice, he said. “It is something I’m passionate about and something that needs lots of thought and planning. “Gay men do not become parents through an accident or one night stand, it takes a lot of planning. I’m not rushing, but it is something that has me hooked now and I want to go ahead and investigate it more.

New series Away from the pressing issues in Bobby’s personal life, 2013 looks set to be an exciting year for him with on screen commitments. The new series of The Only Way Is Essex will soon hit our screens – something Bobby cannot wait to get started with. He said: “I am now a year into the show, I feel like I have done my apprenticeship with TOWIE, ,¡YH VHWWOHG LQ DQG ,¡P GHĂ€QLWHO\ not the new boy anymore. “I love being on TOWIE, I love the whole getting up in the PRUQLQJ Ă€OPLQJ ZLWK P\ IULHQGV and having an absolute laugh. “Obviously some of last series wasn’t too much of a laugh for me, but I just love the idea of ZRUNLQJ DQG Ă€OPLQJ ZLWK P\ friends, so I cannot wait to get on with it again.â€? Bobby hopes that TOWIE will not be his only television commitment this year, either. Last year he appeared as a guest panellist on the ITV2 sister show to I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here, called I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here‌ Now. But that’s not enough for him or his fans. Having got a taste for the jungle lifestyle, he admitted that if asked, he would really love to appear on the actual show, away from the comforts of fake tan, make-up and hair products. ESM, for one, would love to see this happen. Having always had a big fear RI Ă \LQJ %REE\ DGPLWWHG WKDW tackling the 24 hour journey really helped him to overcome that fear. “I do thank ITV for giving me WKH FRQĂ€GHQFH WR JHW RQ WKDW plane and get over my fear of Ă \LQJ Âľ KH VDLG “But to be fair, I think business class does take the sting out of Ă \LQJ :KDW LV WKHUH WR EH VFDUHG of when you’re lying in a bed, you’ve got champagne on tap and 'LVQH\ Ă€OPV" ,W ZDV ORYHO\ “It went so quickly, but I realised I was the only one watching the 'LVQH\ Ă€OPV (YHU\RQH HOVH ZDV watching all the latest horrors out of the cinema, but I’m sat there watching The Little Mermaid KDOI ZD\ WR 0HOERXUQH Âľ 2Q D Ă€QDO QRWH WKRXJK KDYLQJ

The colour of Love… and Lipstick By Professional Make-up Artist Michelle MacGregor

I Do! I Do! I Do! Ladies dream of the day, men nervously fear it. When a man gets down on one knee, it is a moment that both will remember forever. It has to be special, and we think we have found the perfect way to make that extra special impression.

M

arriage proposals can be among the most nervewracking things a man can do, and something a woman will remember for the rest of her life. Indeed, if it goes wrong, it can also be hugely embarrassing. It is that moment of true romance when a man tells his lover that he wants to spend the rest of his life with them. Therefore, it is important that he has planned what he needs to say, is well rehearsed, and above all, he has got the ring just right! This Valentine’s Day will no doubt see a large number of people in Essex doing just that, so perhaps the unique service offered by Hot Pink, a company based in Theydon Bois, will be of interest. Regular readers of Essex Style Magazine will already know of some of the services that Hot Pink offer, as they provided a beautiful ring for Jamie Hoare as part of the big makeover in the January issue. The proposal service is arguably the company’s most well-known, as they design bespoke rings for couples using their 3D CAD programme, which co-owner Manu Bhardwaj admits makes them unique from most other ring sellers. He said: “All of our rings are bespoke commissioned artworks. We don’t hold any stock, meaning that our over heads are dramatically reduced. ´:H SDVV WKHVH EHQHĂ€WV WR RXU customers, allowing them to buy more carats for their cash.â€? The process is relatively simple and stress free. The buyer can either pay a visit to the company’s studios, or connect to them remotely via either a laptop or iPad. At that stage, the whole process of designing the ring takes place in front of you, including all the different cuts of gemstones and sizes. So gents, make sure you know your lady’s ring size! Manu added: “I have sold a number of rings in the last six months to people in Europe, all done without ever meeting in person!â€? Having a ring designed this way could not be more romantic, especially considering how

ZZZ HVVH[VW\OHPDJD]LQH FR XN

personal it is compared to other ways of buying. Hot Pink insists that personal touch and creative experience is right at the company’s core. Mary Milgate of Hot Pink says the service is extremely affordable, making it suitable for someone who wants to propose, knowing that the wedding ring often costs a small fortune. She said: “Our proposal service gives the client the opportunity to make the ring in non-precious metals and crystals instead of precious stones. This is really popular at Hot Pink. “Sometimes a design that might be in a man’s head might not be the taste or style of the person who is being proposed to. “With the proposal ring, if there are changes that need to be made, this can be done without a huge cost of having to buy a second ring, which is very expensive. “We have never had client say they were turned down in their proposal, so that is a really good statistic.â€? Once the ring has been made, polished and hallmarked, Hot Pink makes sure everything is perfect and get it sent out. “And then it is down to you,â€? Mary said. “It’s such an important, life changing time and we go through it all with you. “We still keep in touch with many of our clients as they come back to us for their wedding rings and other jewellery. “We have even had many couples come to us to design their wedding bands around engagement rings.â€? Darren Q. Hi Darren, I picked up a gold sequined mini skirt in the sales and plan to team it with a pair of heeled boots. I’ve never worn gold, or sequins, in my life but fancy a change. I’m clueless as what to wear on top. I would love advice on anything you reckon might work? Rowena, 27yrs.

The obvious choice here is an oversized neckpiece but I’ve fallen for the ‘I am a Swan’ earrings from Irish designer Chupi Sweetman-Pell (€98) (£60.77) The Loft Market). The feathers are made from sterling silver and plated in a layer of 18k gold with a matt polished finish. Awear has some cute animal print tops including the intarsia puppy print (€35) (£21.70) and an owl jumper (€40) (£24.80). For a fun, wearable outfit that’s full of attitude, work the oversized look with the super soft marl jersey top with Felix the cat face print from Asos (€25) (£15.50). The relaxed proportions and drop shoulders provide an irreverent pop to off set the glamour of the gold sequins.

Q. I’ve been away travelling for the past year and I’ve recently returned home to the UK. JennyR Promotions.

ou wouldn’t instantly think of a qualified legal secretary and trained teacher from the West Midlands as being someone who could have such a big impact on the Essex music and entertainment scene. But that is precisely what is happening with Jennifer Roberts and the company she formed in April 2011, JennyR Promotions. Having graduated with a Bachelor of Education degree, with honours, Jenny spent a couple of years working as a teacher before being shockingly diagnosed with stage three Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Her case was severe, and the odds of survival were stacked heavily against her. Like a true fighter, though, Jenny defied the odds and survived. From that point, she decided it was time to make a radical change in her life, turning to the fast paced world of sales, marketing and promotions. More than 13 years later, having built up a huge amount of experience, she went solo – and things continue to go from strength to strength. This was where Essex Style Magazine came in. Regular readers will remember our launch party last November, held at the Sugar Hut in Brentwood. Working closely with Eurovision star and Essex boy Josh Dubovie, JennyR Promotions were able to provide a number of acts for the night. Jenny has also worked with 2Shoes and Scott Robinson from 5IVE. Originally hailing from the West Midlands, Jenny might not have expected her career to take her towards Essex. However, by working with Josh Dubovie, she was introduced to the county and says she is delighted to be here, in a time

when Essex is considered to be more glamorous than ever before. “I adore the Essex people,” Jenny admitted. “They are so lovely and friendly, and they make you feel so welcome.” Cleary influenced by her time working alongside Lucy Texeira and Charley Bird from 2Shoes, she added: “I’m even learning some of the local lingo which is ‘totes hilare!’” Thanks to the experience Jenny has gained working in the world of marketing, she has been able to slot into the life of a music promoter with consummate ease. She said: “I see artist and band promotions as combining my teaching and marketing skills. I believe that I can offer a full rounded service especially to new, up and coming musicians and vocalists.” Here at ESM, we are hugely grateful for the work JennyR Promotions have done, and are looking forward to seeing what other big events she has lined up as the business continues to grow. It is clear that her impact on the Essex music scene is growing by the day, so watch this space, you could be hearing big things from Jenny in years to come!

• JennyR Promotions offers a professional service of bespoke music for private celebrations and public events from gentle acoustic sets to full rock bands, soul, RnB, Indie plus many more. All budgets and regions in the UK considered. For more information, why not visit www.jennyrpromotions.co.uk or call Jenny on 07712170747 for a guideline quote.

Matt Cardle He shot to fame two years ago as the winner of the seventh series of X Factor, and ever since Matt Cardle has been a busy man. When William Taylor met up with him, he spoke candidly about Rylan Clark, his Essex roots and how he and Simon Cowell no longer speak.

S

itting down with Matt Cardle, it is hard to believe that two years have passed since Dermot O’Leary read his name aloud, declaring him the winner of The X Factor, 2010. With his rugged hair and

26

unkempt beard, it is clear the fame has not changed him. He’s the same gritty singer-songwriter that he was before applying for Britain’s best known singing competition, yet his life has changed beyond all belief.

For years, Matt traipsed around Essex by night, with just his guitar, performing to only the smallest audiences. By day, he would work hard as a painter and decorator, never giving up hope of getting his big break. “I never saw myself as doing the painting and decorating in the long term,â€? Matt said. “I always wanted to be a singer and songwriter. “Even back in those days I always considered myself to be a singer-songwriter. The painting and decorating was just something I was doing on the side to fund it. I would hope that I’ll never have to pick up a paintbrush again.â€? His big opportunity came when he auditioned for X Factor two years ago. His rendition of Amy Winehouse’s You Know I’m No Good wowed the judges, and since then, he has never looked back. +LV Ă€UVW DOEXP /HWWHUV ZDV released less than a year later, peaking at number two in the album charts and went platinum just months later. Out of the blue, he was dropped by Simon Cowell’s record label, Syco. “I wouldn’t say we fell out,â€? Matt said, somewhat diplomatically. “We had a difference of opinion regarding where each of us wanted to go musically. We had different ideas. “So for the new album I worked on it by myself, I produced it myself and I have nothing to do with Simon anymore.â€?

www.essexstylemagazine.co.uk

That’s not to say things between the pair are bitter, but when Matt was snubbed by the music mogul when wanting to make an appearance on the latest series of X Factor, it was a sign that things were not exactly hunky-dory. Regardless, Matt comes across as a very humble individual, and above all, hugely grateful for everything Simon Cowell, The X Factor and ITV have done for him. He said: “Of course I’m still grateful to Talkback Thames and Syco records for everything that they did for me, but I’ve moved on now. What I am doing now is more what I’ve always wanted to do, without a shadow of a doubt. Born in Southampton, Matt grew up in the Essex town of Halstead. Although his career has forced him to move away from the area, he believes it is important that he keeps in touch with where he came from, and regularly goes back. “I certainly haven’t forgotten where I came from, Matt admitted. “It’s important that I remember how it all started and that I keep my feet on the ground and my head on my shoulders. “Right now, I’m living in southwest London – Fulham. It’s brilliant there, especially for someone in the music industry. Whilst with Matt, it was impossible to avoid the subject of one of Essex’s other X Factor sons: Rylan Clark. “We all had a good laugh when he made it to the live show, he said.

“It’s important that I remember how it all started and that I keep my feet on the ground and my head on my shoulders.”

www.essexstylemagazine.co.uk

“But in the end he did well. I’m sure he will have a great career in television, producing and what have you – he might even have an album. “You never know. When you actually strip back all the high production, he’s actually a great singer – but then again, it wouldn’t be Rylan, it wouldn’t be the same.” Indeed, Matt has kept well in touch with what was going on with The X Factor, but was disappointed to see his favourite act drop out far earlier than should have been the case. “Ella was one of my favourites,” he admitted. “Unfortunately she got voted out quite early on, but she’ll do fantastically well, no matter what. I’ve got enormous faith in that girl.” Of the criticism of Christopher Maloney, Matt felt that was very harsh. His singing ability, Matt felt, was never in question – it was more a case of whether he would appeal to a big enough audience. “It is horses for courses,” Matt said. “I mean, the people who buy Cher Lloyd records aren’t the people who buy Rebecca Ferguson records. There will be a market for Chris’ type of music out there, I’m sure.” Regarding his own career, Matt says he is very excited about the future, and is already looking forward to what he has coming up in 2013. Not only will he be going back on tour, he will continue to work tirelessly to promote his new album and prepare for the next. In a generation where many an X Factor winner has disappeared off the radar, to be branded with the ‘one hit wonder’ slogan, this does not seem to be the case with Matt Cardle. For him, this is just the beginning.

Alec’s Restaurant Bar and Grill

With Essex Style Magazine’s regular restaurant critic on something of a sabbatical this month, former manager of Saint FM, Sandra Amey-Martin brings us her exclusive review of a restaurant that is quickly earning an impressive reputation across the county.

H

aving heard about its reputation as one of Brentwood’s most highly acclaimed restaurants, my partner David and I felt it was an absolute must to try Alec’s Restaurant Bar and Grill. I’ve always been a huge fan of seafood, so I was quite excited to see what a place that claimed to specialise in that type of cuisine had to offer. David, on the other hand, has never been that into seafood, with his palette generally limited prominent landmark in the to anything that contains either local community, with flair and pasta, chicken or both. passion. Having driven past the building back in 2008, and seeing it in such a derelict state, I was mightily impressed by the transformation from a crumbling old ruin to what it is today. was predominately the case, we found there to be a good selection of meat and vegetarian options for those who genuinely cannot abide anything fruits de mer. Bravely, David decided to give the white crab a try for his starter. Whether the real reason was because it was in the guise of pasta ravioli, I’m not entirely sure, but being served with asparagus, tomatoes, olive oil and lemon dressing, it was a real hit. I went for the razor clams in ginger, sizzling garlic, coriander and a hint of red chilli, which turned out to be an absolute taste sensation. The main meal consisted of whole lobster thermidor for David, and the Roast fillet of cod, sweet soy and caramelised spring onion glaze for me. Again, they were an absolute delight, and we would definitely have them again, but for the fact there are so many other amazing dishes on the menu that have to be tried. To go with the meal we ordered a beautiful bottle of white wine, by the name of Sancerre, Les Collinettes, from France. There were so many different wines to choose from, we could have had anything we wanted.

www.essexstylemagazine.co.uk

Overall, the service was absolutely exemplary, and we didn’t have to wait too long for our orders to come. The waiting staffs were quick, but not rushed, and ever so friendly – you cannot take that for granted anymore. You pay for what you get at Alec’s. It is by no means cheap, but with prices ranging from £50 to £70 a head, it certainly represents value for money. I advise that you book your table well in advance, as word is spreading fast about how good it is, and getting a table is very difficult. Being very sophisticated and grown up in both appearance and atmosphere, it is little surprise that children under the age of 12 are not permitted in the restaurant. After eating we retired to the upstairs piano bar and were treated to some great after diner music. This restaurant comes with huge thumbs up recommendation from me. Embarrassing Bodies A lifelong desire to become a doctor and a childhood fascination with medicine doesn’t instantly set you up for a starring role in a hit television series. But when William Taylor sat down with Dr Pixie McKenna, it all became clear. She was born for the television… There is something quite entertaining about sitting there on a Monday night, watching people display

all their weird and wonderful ailments on national television. The more disgusting it looks, the more we watch – admittedly, peeking through our fingers and occasionally gagging. The sorts of problems people appear on Embarrassing Bodies (Channel 4) with really do vary, but regardless, it makes compulsive viewing. Dr Pixie McKenna has been one of the stars of the show for some time now, lending her expertise to the many people who come in needing help. For those who haven’t seen it, patients go to see Dr Pixie, or one of the other doctors, with their problem, it is diagnosed, and by the end of the show, generally, cured. That sort of quick fix is what viewers love – it is almost like a DIY show, with impressive before and after comparisons. Yet, as Dr Pixie explains, the reality is not quite so simple.

“Unfortunately because of the quick cure rate on Embarrassing Bodies, many people who come to see me in my real clinic think I can fix things on the spot,” she said. She Said: “Our show is an hour long – you have a problem at the start, but by the time it’s finished, you are fixed. By and large the person has had a life changing experience.

there is no cure. “People understandably find it very hard to accept that you cannot help them and they may need to learn to live with their condition. “I always feel utterly deflated when I have to tell someone I can’t help. It’s horrible.”

Dr Pixie admits that, despite her passion for medicine, finding her way in the industry wasn’t easy. In fact, it was downright difficult. She said: “I started out working 120 hours a week as a junior doctor in training. We literally didn’t have time to wee! “It was incredibly hard work. We were thrown in at the deep end, but an amazing learning experience.”

From there, Dr Pixie left her home in Ireland and went on to study at Cambridge University. It was there she developed her expertise in women’s health, dermatology

and sexual health. It set her up nicely for her future starring role in Embarrassing Bodies. Dr Pixie admitted that she was happy with how things were going on Embarrassing Bodies, and that there would be plenty more to come in 2013. As well as that she continues to practice as a doctor from her clinic in London. However, she is looking into other projects too. She Said: “I am dedicating this year to writing a book,” she said. “Not a medical one – a chick lit. For me it’s just a bit of girly escapism. “I’m also a new mum, so I’m looking forward to my little baby walking by the summertime. “What I am not looking forward to, though, is doing my first Triathlon later on this year. I swim like a stone so am currently in the baby pool with arm bands!”

ASK THE EXPERT

When you have Channel 4’s resident expert on all things medical available to you, it really would be foolish not to make the most of them as your Ask The Expert guest for that month. Here, Dr Pixie McKenna answers YOUR big questions…

I’m a 48-year-old woman going through my menopause. Do you consider HRT to be a safe treatment? Joan, Chelmsford. HRT is not for everyone, but if your symptoms are very severe then do speak to your GP about it. There is an increased risk of breast cancer in women who take HRT so it is vital to be fully informed or the risks/benefits before you start. It is possible to take nonhormonal treatments to target symptoms such as sweating and hot flushes. In addition to this, HRT is an option especially if your symptoms are off vaginal dryness or discomfort.

I used to suffer from acne quite badly in my teens, but I am 28 now and only occasionally get huge spots on my chin, always in the same place. When I squeeze, I just make a mess of it. What is the best thing for me to do? Claire, Braintree. Firstly stop squeezing, it will only scar. See your GP, they can prescribe you strong topical treatments or pills on prescription. Your lifetime risk of breast cancers as a female living in the UK is one in eight. The fact that you have a family history of breast cancer increases your risk. The risk is greater if your mum was younger when she had breast cancer. Mammograms are offered to all women free on the NHS once they turn 50, so if you are in that age group ensure you have been screened. In terms of self-breast examination my advice is know what is normal for you.

Despite having tried countless antiperspirants and deodorants, I seem to sweat all the time, especially when I am nervous, and the large patches under my armpits embarrass me. What can I do? David, Harlow. See your pharmacist first and get a heavy duty antiperspirant. You want one with aluminium chloride, as this is a chemical that can block the sweat pores. It is available without prescription from pharmacies. There are other options if the antiperspirant fails. Firstly the doctor can give you pills. Next up is botox; this can be given into the arm pits to temporarily stop the sweat. Finally you can buy an iontophoresis machine which is a device which delivers an electric current to the sweat gland and stuns it into submission, so the sweat stops. Medical problems can cause excessive sweating so if you have other symptoms these may need to be ruled out.

Whenever I shave, I always get a really itchy irritation around my neck. Sometimes it even becomes quite a visible rash. Is there anything I can do to prevent this? Alistair, Shenfield. It is likely that you have an infection which is being fuelled by a bug called Staphloccus. This hangs out on the skin of about one in five of the population and in large numbers can give rise to infections, boils, pimples, abscesses and impetigo. You may have a colony of it growing up your nose or on your razor. Scald your razor in boiling water to sterilise it. Replace your shaving foam with antiseptic gel (ideally containing the antibacterial chlorhexadeine). If the rash is severe or your symptoms recurrent see your GP as you may need a prescription for some antibiotics.

I am 22-years-old and almost always get the recommended eight hours sleep a night. However, I feel very tired a lot of the time and have even been afraid I might fall asleep at the wheel when driving. Could there be something wrong with me? Raj, Romford. If you are falling asleep during the day it could be suggestive of sleep apnoea. Classically the sufferer has a thick neckcollar size, snores during sleep and then has periods where he actually stops breathing for 10 seconds or more during sleep. I would suggest you go and see your GP. If you can get someone to tape you when you are sleeping this would be very helpful to provide evidence for your doctor. They can then refer you to a specialist clinic.

e’ve all heard the saying “you are what you eat” and having eaten for my health for several years now, I truly believe that the quality as well as the types of food we consume have a direct effect on the body. The extremes of this are all too clear such as the bloated feeling we get from eating bread and pasta or even more obvious, the intoxicating effects of alcohol, but what about some of those more subtle effects. This month, with thoughts turning to Valentines day, I have suggested some healthy foods that have long been considered aphrodisiacs; the good news is that, whether you believe in the powers of food on the body or not, all of these foods are delicious and great as part of a healthy diet. Oysters: These ocean wonders are high in zinc and are thought to increase the output of testosterone, which enhances libido in both men and women. A good source of lean protein, the legendary lover Casanova was reported to eat 50 oysters each day at breakfast to fuel his stamina. Asparagus: Asparagus is a great

34

source of potassium, fiber, vitamins A, B6, and C, and thiamine. Asparagus is also high in folic acid, which is said to boost histamine production necessary for the ability to reach orgasm for women and men. Honey: A great source of boron. This trace mineral helps the body to use and metabolise oestrogen. Studies have shown that this mineral may also enhance testosterone levels in the blood, the hormone responsible for promoting sex drive in both men and women. Ginger: Mentioned in chapter 7 of The Karma Sutra, ginger stimulates the body’s circulatory system, which aids in blood circulation to make erogenous zones hypersensitive. Garlic: Garlic is chock full of allicin, an ingredient that will increase blood flow. I know, I know it’s going to make your breath smell a little but chewing on fresh parsley will eliminate the smell. 85% Dark Chocolate: Contains a host of compounds including PEA (phenylethylamine), the “love chemical,” which releases dopamine in the pleasure centres of the brain and peaks during orgasm. PEA is said to help

induce feelings of excitement, attraction and euphoria. Cocoa also contains tryptophan, which induces the feeling of wellbeing and relaxation. Avocado: Avocados are rich in vitamins E, B6 and potassium. The Aztecs referred to the avocado by the name ahuacuatl, meaning “testicle tree.” They believed the fruit, hanging in pairs on the tree, resembled testicles. The avocado’s shape is so overtly sexual that Catholic priests in Mexico actually banned its consumption in the 16th century. As a personal trainer, I’ve witnessed the increased confidence clients get from achieving a better body shape. This is especially important when it comes to them enjoying a sexual relationship, as they feel more comfortable being intimate with their partner if they feel confident with their own body shape. I believe a big part of this has to do with a feeling of being in control. When you start to work on your body, you’re taking charge not just of your physical activity but the food you eat as

well as managing your time to fit exercise into your already busy life. For most people, being in control of their own lives gives them a great sense of selfconfidence and this also shows in their posture and presence, which all helps add to a person’s allure. A relatively quick and effective way to tone up is by introducing high-intensity interval training into your training programme. These are short, hard-hitting sessions with functional movements, perfect for adding lean, toned muscle. What’s more, one of the side effects of a hard workout is stamina. After all you don’t want to let yourself or your partner down by being disappointing in the bedroom. When it comes to HIIT the key to success is to choose an exercise you enjoy (running, cycling, rowing or cross trainer) and to keep your body guessing by changing things up during the sessions. Here’s an example of a HIIT session that’s easily integrated into your programme and takes less than 40 minutes.

5 minutes at a leisurely pace. You should be able to hold a conversation at this speed without getting too out of breath. 30 seconds full out sprint followed by 30 seconds at a slow speed (repeat 8-10 times) 5 minutes at moderate intensity. This should be at about 70% of your full sprint pace. It should be hard and fast enough that you couldn’t hold a conversation at this pace. 45 seconds sprint followed by 1 minute at a slow speed (repeat 5 times) Finish with 5-10 minutes at your original leisurely pace.

Prawn and avocado salad with basil dressing •Fresh cooked prawns •Two avocados •Fresh rocket •Basil dressing Preparation Dress a plate with a handful of rocket. Cut the avocado in half (cut around the stone). Twist the two halves apart. Remove the stone. Use a spoon and in one smooth scoop remove the flesh from the skin. Using a sharp knife, cut strips in to the avocado (lengthways) approximately two-thirds the length of the fruit. Push down gently on the fruit to create a fan. Repeat for each half of avocado and place two avocado fans on top of the plates of rocket. Scatter prawns over the rocket and avocado and add dressing. For the dressing. •A large handful of fresh basil •One small teaspoon of honey •One small teaspoon of white wine vinegar •A cupful of extra virgin olive oil •A little still mineral water •Salt and pepper to taste Preparation Blend all the ingredients together until a smooth pourable dressing consistency is achieved. Stuffed chicken breast with fresh steamed vegetables •Two large chicken breasts •Fresh asparagus •Fresh broccoli •Two large carrots •Fresh cauliflower florets For the stuffing Chestnut mushrooms 1 onion Preparation Slice the onion and mushrooms and sauté in butter on a low heat for 20 minutes. Slice two-thirds of the way through the chicken breasts and stuff the pocket you make with a little of the mushroom and onion mixture. Blend the remainder of the mushroom mixture with a little still mineral water to make a smooth sauce add a little parsley (keep sauce warm on a low heat). Smear the chicken breasts with a little butter and season with salt and pepper. Wrap in tin foil and place in a moderate oven for 30 - 40 minutes until cooked through but still moist. In the meantime peel and chop the carrots, cut cauliflower and broccoli into florets and place into a steamer for 5-6 minutes. Prepare the asparagus by snapping off the woody ends. Place into a pan of boiling water for 3-5 minutes. Place the chicken breast and vegetables onto a pre-warmed plate add a little butter to the vegetables, spoon the mushroom sauce over the chicken breast and serve. The Sweet Life Valentine’s Day wouldn’t be the same without sweet treats and delectable desserts. Having co-starred with Jamie Oliver and Jimmy Doherty in a recent Channel 4 series, chef Will Torrent spoke to Essex Style Magazine exclusively about his culinary plans for the big day and the launch of his debut cookbook.

C

hocolate, desserts and all things sweet are synonymous with Valentine’s Day the world over. And when it comes to desserts, you’d think the Italians had the market cornered. Wrong. In Britain, we know how to hold our own, as was proven by TV chef Will Torrent when he starred alongside Jamie Oliver and Jimmy Doherty for their Channel 4 series last year, Food Fight Club. Will came in for the desserts episode, where, for those of you that didn’t see the programme, chefs from Britain travelled to Italy to take on the Italians in a taste test. They came away with a credible draw. Having linked up with Jamie and Jimmy at their cafÊ on Southend Pier, Will is continuing to work alongside the Essex duo, and has a Valentine’s dinner planned at Jimmy’s Farm this month.

38

A pastry chef by trade, Will said that he was really looking forward to working on the dinner, admitting that Jimmy and he had got on really well WRJHWKHU ZKHQ Ă€OPLQJ IRU )RRG Fight Club. “We really hit it off,â€? he said. “In a way, we were just a bunch of lads messing about with food, but with a real passion for it as well. “I sat down with Jimmy after and had a chat about future things we could do together, and he said I could come and do Valentine’s Day. “As a pastry chef – and specialising in desserts – I know pastries and chocolate are going to be pretty big at Valentine’s Day, so that’s what we decided we would do.â€? Indeed, Will’s CV is an impressive one, and you can certainly expect him to make more appearances on your TV screens for years to come. Despite having graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree, his passion truly lied in food, having enjoyed a spell of work experience at Heston Blumenthal’s restaurant, The Fat Duck when aged just 16.

Since then, Will has worked hard to build up his reputation as one of the very best pastry chefs in England, and is currently a consultant to Waitrose. Sitting in the stunning converted barn that is the restaurant at Jimmy’s Farm, Will was in the early stages of putting the plans for the Valentines’ evening together. He was already clear on what he was aiming to achieve from it. He added: “We obviously want to give couples a really enjoyable evening with an emphasis on chocolate and desserts.

Cosmetic Review

Tanning is KING in Essex! Fake tanning is a booming industry and with so many varieties it can all get a bit confusing. So here at Essex Style Magazine, we’ve put together the best fake tans that promise to leave you bronzed and streak - free! This is the Official ESM list of Top 10 best fake tans: Number 1: An immediate lifesaver for all those who didn’t have time to pop down to the salon! Apply Fake Bake’s light lotion generously and leave on for up to three hours until you get your desired tan. Then, simply pop in the shower, rinse, and hello bronzed goddess! The lotion itself is easy to apply and absorbs quickly so you don’t have to avoid clean bed sheets or white surfaces. Priced at £24.95, it’s slightly more expensive than your average tanner but does come with a tanning mitt and gloves, making it worth the price tag. 60 Minutes, £24.95, Fake Bake

Number 2: St Tropez Dark Bronzing Lotion really is easy to apply - it’s recommend you use latex gloves, but we used our fail-safe tanning mitt and it worked perfectly. Although it is described as ‘dark’, the fake tan does adapt to your skin tone so looks completely natural once developed. And the best bit is that it’s not sticky, so can be applied a few hours before going out and worn with makeup over the top. Self tan dark bronzing lotion, £33, St Tropez

Number 3: If you’re working to a budget but you really want to have that glowing tan, this Marks and Spencer lotion could be the one for you. After only applying one layer, you will get a gorgeous sun-kissed glow that can be deepened the more you apply. It’s designed to last, meaning you can combat wet weather and start getting ready days before! The big bonus is that it smells amazing too! Self - tan formula gradual tan moisturiser, £5.00

Number 4: This new Garnier self-tan mousse is amazing! Simply apply the desired amount of foam to your body for a streak free tan that will just soak into your skin. Created without oxygen to make application soft and smooth, the tanner also eliminates the usual fake tan smell. Best of all, this quick-drying mousse has a slight tint so you can see what you’r applying as you go. It’s a bargain at under a tenner. Garnier no streaks self-tanning mousse, £9.33

Number 5: Thanks to the pump design, this fake tan gel can be dispensed in modest drops of lotion making application easy. The gel’s colour can be a little scary when first seen, but once applied, it creates a natural, golden effect. Sienna X works well across different skin tones and has a non-sticky texture and a refreshing, citrusy smell which makes it pleasant to use. It also keeps its promise of washing off easy. I’ve seen a lot of reviews for this product and as much as I thought it was good, it was a well deserved number 5 for me! Bronzing gel, £12.95, Sienna

Number 6: Melvita’s self-tanning gel is one to try if you’re on the very pale side and want a natural looking tan. elebrities such as Victoria Beckham, Cheryl Cole and Katie Price have led the way for years when it comes to glamorous hair styles. One week you see a short, sophisticated look, the next it is gorgeous long, flowing locks. The transformation appears to happen overnight – but even the most naïve fashionista will know that our hair cannot grow that fast. We are, of course, talking about hair extensions. Once exclusive to the rich and famous, most girls could only look on in envy. However, things have changed as technology has improved. There are now many ways to extend those tresses and get you looking sizzling. In fact, you wouldn’t be a true Essex girl without them. There are clip-in extensions, weaves, fusions, netting, lace fronts, tracking, and many, many more. The options are endless. You couldn’t possibly know what was exactly right for you.

Totally Essex Hair, based in Upminster, have introduced a new and affordable range of hair extensions that are durable, longlasting, and above all does not damage your own hair. They are called Easilocks, and have been imported from Ireland. They use 100 percent natural hair, and attach it in such a way that no one would ever know it was not your own. The likes of Gemma Collins, Amy Childs and Chantelle Houghton are among the many famous Essex girls to have used Totally Essex in recent years, and all of them now look fantastic for it. We felt it was an absolute must at Essex Style Magazine to go and try these and find out if they really were the real deal. Our very own food critic, Barrie Drewitt-Barlow took his daughter Saffron along for a consultation, with her due to feature in an upcoming television series on Nickelodeon.

The first stage of the process involved Saffron getting her hair colour matched by Suzi Dunn from Totally Essex. It is important that the hair extensions are as similar to the client’s own hair as possible, for them to blend in more naturally. A week later, having waited for the hair to be ordered in from Ireland, Saffron headed back to the salon to have the extensions put in. Easilocks use their own form of micro-lock technology to attach the hair. The process does not involve heat or glue, thus helping to protect the hair. First of all, the Easilock microring is attached to a girl’s own natural hair, as close to the scalp as possible. The microring is absolutely tiny and tends to be the same colour as the hair extensions, making it virtually undetectable to the human eye. The next stage sees the hair extensions fed through the ring to join up with the person’s own hair, before a clamping tool is used to tighten the ring and hold everything in place.

The end results were incredible, and it was impossible to see where Saffron’s own hair joined onto the extensions. The result? That long haired look that all girls love and looks absolutely fantastic. Totally Essex exclusively import the Easilocks extensions from Ireland and are the go to place in the whole of the county to achieve the desired look. Prices begin from £600, so it is definitely worth saving for. All the celebs turn to Totally Essex and Easilocks for their extensions, and we even bumped into glamour model, Gemma Massey when we were there. In her profession, looking great is so important, so if it’s good enough for her, it’s good enough for us! To find out more about Easilocks hair extensions, or any of the other services Totally Essex offer, visit their website, www. totallyessexhairextensions. co.uk or give Suzi a call on 07869771989.
