Starry Nights Outdoor Movies recently screened their first double feature at the Eumundi Showgrounds - with “Dirty Dancing / Strictly Ballroom”. There was a great crowd in attendance under a perfect spring night. The next Drive-in movie screening will be a school holidays Double Feature - ‘The Princess Bride’ / ‘Neverending Story’ on Friday October 3. On Friday October 17 they are screening Ghostbusters 1 and Ghostbusters 2, a Halloween special. EDCA are proud to support this family friendly event in our town.

Business N ew E C C O director from C hamber At the Eumundi Chamber (ECC) breakfast meeting last Friday, Michael Arnett was nominated by members to replace John McCallum on the Eumundi Community Combined Organisation (ECCO) board of Directors. Michael and his wife Caroline own Bohemian Bungalow and are co-owners of the Imperial Lionheart Hotel. There are two Directors from each of the three Eumundi Associations: ECC, EDCA and EHA. Longtime member John is leaving his ECCO board position due to work commitments further afield - but during his
time on the board he has been instrumental in securing the leasing arrangements for the car park, helping establish Experience Eumundi, saving the town’s Medical Centre and been involved in numerous major projects including our new RV facilities over the past seven years and will be missed. He has been wished well by the Chamber for all his future endeavours. Original Eumundi Market Manager Daniel West and Experience Eumundi General Manager Anthony WynneHoelscher outlined their shared vision of transforming Eumundi
into a shopping wonderland this Christmas as Eumundi ‘Lights Up’ for the night markets throughout December. Daniel presented his prized stash of rope lights to the Chamber in the hope that the village would get behind the idea of decking out their shops and creating a lightshow worthy of a drive from other parts of the Coast. Community M ore good comm unity works n u rtu red by E HA At the Eumundi Historical Association’s (EHA) AGM and Donations evening at the School of Arts last Wednesday evening, a large group of community members, as well as Councillors Rogerson and Robinson, gave thanks to the positive works of a number of charitable groups. These community groups also volunteer for ECCO market car parking duties to supplement their coffers and it is fantastic to see this commitment to improving the well-being of the communities they serve. EHA also acknowledged the support and contribution of members who volunteer in many capacities, making an active contribution to the community by so doing. President Donata Page also paid tribute to the time and expertise freely given by OEM Board and staff and the Eumundi Foundation of Arts and Culture Board members, as well as every Original Eumundi Markets stallholder who make a visit to the market such a great experience. Donations recipients this year were: • Eumundi State School P&C Association to help install a shaded structure over existing tennis courts, which will provide a sun-safe area for students. • Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre to assist in funding operational costs at the Centre. WRC cares for, rehabilitates and eventually releases injured and orphaned animals back
into the wild and is principally staffed by volunteers 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. • The new Rotary Club of Eumundi were given help for equipment storage, a computer and printer. The recently chartered Rotary Club of Eumundi has been established to do good works for the local community and further the humanitarian goals of Rotary.
• Genealogy Sunshine Coast were given funding for a new laptop to assist with the association’s “Laptops for Learning” project. The members are currently undertaking a project which covers cemetery recording, mapping and photography of all gravestones in Yandina and Eumundi.
• Cooroora Woodworker’s Club (CWC) were given funds to purchase a new drum sander. CWC is heavily involved in Eumundi and Cooroy, providing support and mentoring for over 110 members, many of whom are retired senior citizens. • Coolum Caravan Club, for the purchase of club flags. Members of the club consider themselves ambassadors for the Eumundi and Coolum area and also do important fundraising for the Royal Flying Doctors Service and Care Flight. • For Our Daily Bread were provided vital funding for the provision of 100 food hampers to the needy in the Eumundi, Doonan and Verrierdale area. This charity staffed by volunteers provides free and low-cost food, clothing and household goods to the needy in the community. The charity concentrates on the elderly, homeless youth and indigenous folk.

Community lowdown on the S u nshine C oast A lliance As The Green is the voice of the hinterland, we strive for balance. So we provided Steve Bennett, President of SCA, an opportunity to offer up an alternate view regarding potential EDV boundary changes. Sunshine Coast Alliance (SCA) comprises some 70 members, who with their families are many long-time community residents and rate payers and when purchasing their properties ensured that they were in the Maroochy Shire and/or Sunshine Coast Regional Council. They currently live, shop, play sport, work, use the airport and Nambour Hospital in the SCRC communities. Eumundi, Doonan, and Verrierdale are predominantly in the North Maroochy catchment and we feel we have a real community of interest with this area. Within our membership, many generations have grown up in this community - governed by this shire for over 100 years. Our heritage, culture, and businesses are in this shire and have been supported by the current local government. We
have seen an increase in services and community consultation since Mayor Mark Jamieson, Cr. Robinson and Cr. Rogerson were elected and we feel that we have a council of integrity.
them, unless we want our rates inevitably increased dramatically, and services and local government grants decreased - as is happening in NSC communities such as Cooroy.
At the EDV Forum held at the Eumundi CWA in June, Cr. Robinson and Rogerson (SCRC) agreed with Cr. Wellington & Cr. Jerusevic (Noosa Shire Council) that the EDV area currently cost more to service than the revenue raised through rates and levies in the area. Many people do not want to join the financially fatigued NSC. The recent Auditor General’s report appears to show the financial black hole that many warned there would be prior to de-amalgamation.
We do not want national heritage listing imposed on us over our lands that dramatically restricts us and diminish our rights as land owners. We do not want to pay a “tourism levy” or rates to subsidise a free bus service to Hastings Street!
Councillors Wellington & Jerusevic also said at the meeting that they believed that if we joined the NSC that we would not have divisional councillors. We want divisional councillors – members of our community that are accountable to our community. It is clear that the NSC can’t afford us and we can’t afford to join
Long time resident of Eumundi Rose Paulger celebrated her 100th birthday recently with the members of Eumundi CWA and Eumundi Care and Share. The group took the community bus to visit her on her special day. Whilst there, CWA president Florence Saunders presented Rose with a certificate of appreciation for over 80 years of service with the Queensland CWA.
We cannot see any valid, justified, substantiated, or sustainable reason for any boundary change. There seem to be too many uncertainties and no substantiated or quantified benefits! We are a strong community with our own culture, heritage, and biodiversity. We do not need Noosa - it seems they need us for some reason?

Word has probably already spread that Local Government Minister David Crisafulli has responded in writing to residents of Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale and Weyba Downs who had sought his intervention into the mooted splitting off of the Northern part of the Sunshine Coast Local Government area into the Noosa Council area. In the Minister’s letter, he quashed any future split, citing that the Sunshine Coast Council had “…unanimously adopted a resolution not to support any request for a Local Government boundary change in respect of the localities proposed by the EDV Residents Group. Therefore, as both Councils do not agree to this proposal, a boundary change as suggested by the EDV Residents Group will not proceed.” Interestingly, up to and including the present tense, Noosa Council has sat noncommittal on the sidelines with regards to any change in a common boundary, neither giving their endorsement or rejection of EDV’s proposed boundary realignment. This silence from Noosa Council spoke volumes for me personally

and I’m sure that on reflection, the pro-boundary change section of the Community, of which I have no doubt would have been a relatively fair percentage, would now be asking the pertinent question “Did Noosa really want us?” Whilst it would fuel conjecture and fanatical debate if I were to give my honest educated opinion to the above question, let one thing be perfectly clear. The Sunshine Coast Council voted unanimously to not support any boundary change and in doing so vehemently demonstrated that the townships and local areas of Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale and Weyba Downs all played an integral part in the history, make-up and character of the Sunshine Coast Local Government area over the last 100 plus years, and their remained inclusion will be fought for and appreciated well into the future. The Sunshine Coast Council’s stance certainly wasn’t about money, power or status; it was about a unified Sunshine Coast, getting on with the business of ensuring that we indeed live, work and play in ‘Australia’s Most Sustainable Region – Clean, Green and Diverse.’

P endragon off to Paris Local artisans and stallholders Pendragon Shoes are off to the World Fashion Exhibition in Paris to represent Australia as the haute couture shoe brand. The event will see them showing their impressive wares to buyers and international media from up to 100 countries attending the event. Eumundi Market Manager Daniel West (right) and Cr Greg Rogerson presented Pendragon Shoes’ Jackie Orme Ward with a cheque for $2000 to help pay for the opportunity. “It is with great

Survival rates continue to improve in Australia with 89 out of every 100 women diagnosed with invasive breast cancer now surviving five or more years beyond diagnosis. (Cancer Australia 2013) Finding breast cancer early provides the best chance of surviving the disease. Changes to look for include: • a new lump or lumpiness, especially if it’s only in one breast • a change in the size or shape of your breast • a change to the nipple, such as crusting, ulcer, redness or inversion • a nipple discharge that occurs without squeezing • a change in the skin of your breast such as redness or dimpling • an unusual pain that doesn’t go away. Arts E u m u ndi ’ s 1 st S c u lpt u re winner Hew Chee Fong with his entry entitled Sustainable, was announced as the winner of Eumundi’s first sculpture prize on Sunday 14 September. Held at The Fig Tree, the restaurant was transformed into a sculpture gallery full of some 80 art lovers from near and far as well as a number of artists - with the 10 shortlisted maquettes exhibited. The theme of this year’s competition was the Eumundi Timber Industry. A panel of three arts professionals - Joolie Gibbs, Dr Reg Chapple and Michael Hawker - judged the Prize and their spokesperson Michael Hawker (from the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art) announced the winner. Although unable to attend the event, Hew Chee Fong said via email, “It is an honour to be chosen.” Sharing insight into his work, Hew explained he searches for the beauty in simplicity. “Sometimes the simpler something appears, the harder it has been to achieve,” he said. Hew will now receive $15,000 to create the large sculpture that will be unveiled in Caplick Park on Friday 12 December at Eumundi’s Night Markets. Project Manager, on behalf of Eumundi’s Foundation of Culture & the Arts, Sue Campin said, “We thank all entrants, congratulate Hew Chee Fong and look forward to seeing his finished sculpture in Caplick Park.” The People’s Choice sculpture
will also be announced on the 12th, Sue said, “We have already received over 250 votes for the People’s Choice and encourage everyone to lodge a vote at the Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre or online until 10 December.” Sue said, “The Foundation for Culture & Arts Eumundi is proud to champion this event for the Eumundi community and is grateful to the Eumundi Combined Community Organisation (ECCO) through its Experience Eumundi promotional arm for its’ generous sponsorship
of the $15,000 first prize.” Sue also said the project received great support from the Sunshine Coast Council, with local Councillor Greg Rogerson in attendance to congratulate the finalists and winner. The Reluctant Dragon season put away last Sunday with the youngest cast member just four years-old and the oldest in their 80th year. It was a broad-brush of on-stage talents - and audiences loved it. As usual Lyn Ireland - who for many, many, years has masterminded the coffee-snack bar - turned on a terrific repast. Back on the menu were Lyn’s special chocolate crackles and the adults had their fair share too. As this was the final in the Children’s Classic series it called for a great cast and crew party - and indeed it was just that. The catering was superb and a reward for much of the efforts made over past months. Betwixt now and year’s end there’ll be full-on rehearsals at the School of Arts for senior theatre productions, to be staged at a new venue in 2015. For followers of the past four years’ highly successful series, featuring A Chap, Two Divas and a Piano, the big news is they’ll again kick off the Indee program next year in February with a Golden Years of Hollywood Tribute. We’ll keep you informed on dates and time.

Andy operates Sunshine Unicycles, which has been teaching kids to ride unicycles on the Coast for four years. Andy said, “I would have loved the opportunity to ride a unicycle when I was a kid and I’m a big kid at heart so it’s a lot of fun for me.” Andy initially started unicycling for fitness and the challenge. It also made him a stronger mountain biker and in competitive events he averages a top 10 finish. Andy said benefits of being a unicycler are improving your skills and being a better runner with stronger legs. When you begin to unicycle, the first trick that you would learn is obviously how to ride! After that,
some of the skills riders learn are: idling, free mounting, riding backwards, one foot riding, riding skate ramp, riding across rocks and even riding down stairs! With hard work and dedication, you could progress through the International Unicycle Federation skill levels.

P ortraits of childhood New resident to Eumundi, Liz Dick from Liz Dick Photography, has joined Eumundi Fairy Tale Pony Rides’ Sally and Sarah on Saturdays at the Original Eumundi Markets (OEM) to capture whimsical photos of young market visitors in dress-up costumes with horses and ponies, set against an enchanted forest backdrop. Liz prints the photos onsite, but also works on her computer adding layers of colours and filters to really bring the magical portraits to life. Liz explained she moved to Eumundi to escape the hustle and so her son could
attend the Steiner School in Doonan. “I just love living in the hinterland and seeing Cooroy Mountain out my window is just amazing,” she said. Liz and Eumundi Fairy Tale Pony Rides are at OEM on Saturdays. Liz is also available for private functions and photoshoots.

Books S ylv ia S nail book re v iew Aarii, eight years and Zhai, six years Aarii This interesting book was about a gardener called Simon Green and a snail called Sylvia. I loved that the snail could write and talk to Simon. The best part was when the man finally understood what the snail was trying to say. I loved the drawings and the way the writing changed on different pages. I liked that the market customers were thinking about what they would cook with the vegetables when they got home. I thought the story was interesting, bizarre in a good way and happy. This book made us think about gardening, fresh food and insects. The drawings of the worms and ant holes were

funny. The vegetables look real. I recommend this book for children aged 2 to 6. Zhai I loved that the vegetables were so good they were sold out at a market stall by noon. The man was a really good person. I liked the story because the man and Sylvia snail got to know each other. This book made me think about gardening, fruit and veg, and markets. It made me feel hungry, except for the pumpkin! The pictures are really, really good. You can learn about insects helping and what you can grow in your garden. I recommend this book to children aged 1 to 9.

I first fell in love with pizza as a young boy growing up in Bankstown, Sydney (Birrong to be exact). We had this amazing Italian family restaurant. It was a huge place to my little eyes, with a massive stone-faced pizza oven set into the building. The smells and sound coming from behind that counter - my father had to constantly pick me up so I could see what was happening. Needless to say that stuck with me, so after years of slogging it out in other peoples’ kitchens, when the time came to open my own place in North Arm I logically I went for my first love – pizza! I have decided to share two of our menu pizzas at Gold Creek Pizza with you in the hope that you also fall in love with pizza the way it should be – simple! Tension ball by rolling against the bench in the palm of your hand. Let sit for about 15-20 mins. Flatten out ball with the back of fingers and commence rolling with a pin - and plenty of flour to prevent sticking. Roll to desired size and thickness then place on cooking tray.

Knead until smooth and slightly elastic (When you can poke it and it springs back with no dough left on the finger). Cover dough and let rise for one hour. Knock it down, then allow to 18
Once pricked, put it into oven at max for 30 – 40 seconds. Now you have a pizza base ready to go. You could of course freeze it at this stage and have a few for rainy nights. I recommend purchasing a “pizza stone” as nothing beats a stone cooked pizza. Always have your oven nice and hot, as hot as it goes, with the pizza stone already in for sliding that pizza onto.

Place in oven for approximately 10-12 minutes but keep an eye on it! Everything will certainly be cooked when the base is. Serve with lemon wedge. The Olive Pizza Go down to Eumundi markets and see Pablo @ Pablo’s Fresh and ask for a tub of the chilli olives (go for the garlic if you prefer, though I reckon nothing beats the chilli). Take home and blitz with a little olive oil. You want a paste not thin oil consistency. Now you’re ready to go. Spread the tapenade. Tear a nice amount of the bocconcini and scatter around the top, then put straight into a nice hot oven. This one will cook quickly so keep an eye on it. Serve when golden and crispy with a wedge of lemon or lime.

Magpies are one of Australia’s most loved birds. Many people love feeding them and are happy to have a family of magpies live on their property, whilst others find them a pest. Some magpies become very aggressive at nesting time. This is usually a response to being harassed by people. Magpies are very territorial and protective at nesting time and don’t like anything or anyone coming too close to their nesting tree. Many magpies are brought to the Wildlife Centre having been injured by animals (including people), cars or even because they’ve ingested worms or grubs sprayed with chemicals. Then there is the young magpie issue. Today I visited Gill and already she has four young magpies at the Wildlife Centre. Many more will trickle in over the next few months. Magpies are generally very diligent parents. Occasionally, things can go wrong. Nestlings can
fall out of the nest during windy weather and storms. Babies can be abandoned when a large brood has hatched and there is insufficient food for everyone. Usually the smallest will be left to starve. It’s a really sad thing to witness. Gill asks that people don’t rush to assume that babies have been abandoned though. Please observe the young for several hours to see if they are still being fed. When you are satisfied that a youngster is in trouble, bring to the Centre in a suitable box or container. School holidays can also become perilous for magpies when bored teenagers turn their attentions to helpless birds. The Eumundi Rehabilitation Centre is open 24/7.
For many years now we’ve had a gang of rebels making noise in the neighbourhood but these aren’t your usual crew of troublemakers. Yes, they’re noisy. Yes, they go around in large groups. And yes, their appearance often frightens small children (their small, wrinkly, bald heads can be a little scary on first introduction), but they have so many positive qualities. They’re the first to announce visitors, spot snakes, goannas and birds of prey and they do a great job of pest management. Guinea Fowl are insect and seed eaters, so they make the most of such things as wasps, termites, snails, ticks, spiders, lice and other bugs; all of which are beneficial for the plant, human and animal populations on the ridge. Originally natives of Africa, the black and white spotted Guinea Fowl can be
found throughout Australia in both domestic and wild flocks. The flock on our ridge seems to take a little from column A and a little from column B. We’re not sure who they originally belonged to or how long ago they were classed as domestic, but we do know they have been roaming freely for many generations. Although I’m yet to spot any little brown keets (the babies), there are many juveniles that have a lighter, less spotted plumage; it would appear that even though they are groundnesters, they are pretty good at hiding their eggs and managing predators as we often see in excess of twenty birds at once. Over the years I’ve really come to enjoy and appreciate these visitors. They’ve saved several chickens by raising the “snake alarm” and their flighty antics always raise a smile.

from nesting trees. Swooping magpies are on the rise but most magpies don’t attack. During breeding season some birds can be aggressive when defending a nest. If you must travel through a nesting area there are some precautions you can take:

N atu re N otes K AT Y D I D S D E F E N C E If you are a small creature without the bulk or weaponry to ward off predators there are basically two strategies to adopt for self-protection. One option is to make yourself almost invisible. This can be achieved by being active only at night when there are far fewer hunters’ eyes looking for you than there would be in daylight. If you are out feeding during the day you can also become virtually invisible by blending in with your background. One of our local insects which uses both methods is Naskrecki’s Bush Katydid (Ozphyllum naskreckii) which is exactly the same tone of green as the vegetation, usually eucalypt leaves, which are its food source. Additionally, it is strictly nocturnal so its chances of being spotted are minimal. Finding a katydid requires good hearing and a lot of time. Their call is a muted “tzzz”

given at ten to twenty second intervals, and can be homed in on with much patience. We have occasionally tracked down other species but never the Naskrecki’s because its call is ventriloquistic and can seem to be in front of you and also behind you. They obviously call to find one another and their hearing must be acute if unconventional. The hearing organ is located not on the head but on the upper tibia (thigh) while the tympanum (eardrum) is located in an auditory spiracle (small opening). Currently there is research into whether females with larger spiracles can find calling males more quickly. The genus Ozphyllum (Australian leaf) was put up as recently as 2007 and Piotr Naskrecki is a noted entomologist and Nature photographer. The second strategy for self-
protection is quite the opposite of the above. If you can’t hide from a predator you might be able to use bluff and make yourself look formidable or inedible. Another species of katydid, a diurnal grounddweller, is probably the only Australian species that does this. When threatened the female snaps out her fore-wing covers to expose a brightly red and purple striped body, not what you expect. We picked one up once before we knew about it and couldn’t drop it

quickly enough when it unfolded. It really works. We don’t know how the males get on without this ability. This species, Acripeza reticulate, grows to the same size as the one above, about 50 mm.
Letters Follow due process The EDV Residents Group Inc. is aware of various repor ts in the Sunshine Coast media alleging that the Local Government Minister has made a decision refusing the boundary change proposed by EDV. EDV has not been informed of any such decision by the Minister regarding a boundary change and as far as we know no such decision has been made. It would appear that the repor ts are erroneous.
DO ROADS M A G I C A L LY R E PA I R ? The suggestion by Victor Waterhouse ROBBING EDV TO PAY WHO [The Green 4 Sept] that $19 million has somehow disappeared from Council’s finances is ludicrous. Does rubbish walk to the dump? Does the grass in the parks trim itself and roads magically repair themselves? These services and others supplied by councils are not considered capital works and are where most of our rates are spent. If Victor would like to apply his same argument to the Noosa Council’s capital works program I am sure he would be asking where did all the money go? These routes were replaced by train lines providing transportation for the growing forestry and farming industries.

The commonly used phrase “The Noosa Hinterland belongs in the Noosa Shire” sums up the debate succinctly! My children currently go to school in Eumundi but will go the Noosa District High at Cooroy for secondary schooling. All of the children’s after school activities are held in the Noosa Shire. Our doctor is in Noosaville and my husband works for a Noosa based company. Our family enjoy the beach at Noosa and our extended family live in Noosa. Quite simply, we consider ourselves a Noosa family as the vast majority of our day-to- day life and association is with Noosa. Without a doubt the Noosa Hinterland should be part of the Noosa Shire! Please fence playground I am very excited about the upgrade of the Dick Caplick Playground. However, I have a reque st. I am a local mum who visits the playground regularly. My daughter is a typical two year-old runaway child, so I am quite concerned about Memorial Dr and the car parks that are next to the playground . I don’t want to think about what could happen if my daughter (or any other child) ran onto the stree t. I’ve had conversations with many parents about this matter and they share my concern. As you say, this park is one of the most used parks in Qld. Oh and the toilet facilities need to be extended - the queues on a Wed and Sat are out to the pavement!
