T his issue ...

The pre-Christmas rush can get quite manic though: a mad dash for one last pressie, finding the perfect turkey, or burning down the Bruce to get to the rellies on Christmas day. This year, please go slow. These last couple of months our close-knit community have experienced enough tragic loss on the roads. It’s ALWAYS better to be late for Christmas then never arrive. Have a brilliant summer everyone. Thanks for reading - The Green loves being your community voice.

Don’t miss the unveiling on Friday 12 in Caplick Park of the inaugural Eumundi Sculpture Prize. A magnificent start to Eumundi becoming a destination.

Doonan’s Noosa Pengari Steiner School have been knocked by the tragic death recently of teacher and young father Andre Vogel and much loved 16 year-old Gabriel Runge while on a school excursion in New Zealand. This is a tragic loss for our close community. Principal Allen Kloeden has set up a fund to help cover the New Zealand costs, offer counseling to the grief stricken school and also support Andre’s wife Liv and their two girls Shanti and Maya. Please contact the school if you are able to help on 5471 0199 or enquiries@noosasteiner.qld. edu.au Eumundi’s sculpture prize was installed by the winning artists Fong and Loretta last week in Dick Caplick park. The official unveiling will take place on Friday 12 Dec from 5pm.

Arts in Eumundi I had a good time at the recent Regional Cultural Stakeholders meeting in Eumundi. It was an opportunity for arts and cultural representatives from across the region to get together, showcase innovative projects and build partnerships to create exciting new initiatives for our region. This event also coincided with the unveiling of the Eumundi Sculpture Prize winner. ECCO celebrations A great night was had by all at the ECCO annual general meeting and Christmas celebration. It’s clear that Eumundi has had another successful year with its community and business initiatives. ECCO has been largely responsible for this success and I would like to congratulate Anthony and the

NEGLECTED NORTHERN END OF THE COAST? EDV has always argued that our beautiful area and our lifestyle values have far more in common with Noosa Shire than the values inherent in a large, growing city of the Sunshine Coast. We have also argued that being a small part in the far north of the Coast when the southern parts are rapidly expanding, will inevitably result in our interests being sidelined in favour of the more populous areas.

The airport expansion is a classic example of our fears being realised! Our residents and ratepayers are being treated like mushrooms. I read with disbelief the report in The Green on the one and only meeting that Crs Robinson and Rogerson held here about the airport expansion. Why was this held so late, and with limited notice given that a major impact of the proposed realigned new

committee for working hard to ensure Eumundi remains one of the Sunshine Coast’s iconic tourist destinations. Merry Christmas On behalf of my wife Jeanne and myself, I would like to wish the Eumundi and district communities a happy Christmas and New Year. I look forward to working with you all in 2015. Yandina fire management meeting This fire management meeting was held after Ninderry residents expressed concerns about possible bushfires on or near Mt Ninderry. I’d like to thank Qld Fire and Emergency Services, the local Rural Fire Brigade and SEQ Catchments, who provided expert advice. It’s important to take responsibility for your house and land and consider options to reduce the areas fuel load.

runway is on the residents of our area? Maybe the answer lies in the fact that the realigned runway will advantage more people in the South, where votes count more than here? We fear this will happen more and more. It begs the question: are we expendable in the bigger scheme of things? Based on the answers given by our “elected representatives” to a group of angry residents, it appears so.

Cr Rogerson obviously did not consider that he should consult residents on such an important proposal. Cr Robinson stated that he had consulted with the EDV Residents Group – really? When and where? This poor consultation process belies Mayor Jamieson’s assertion that we are valued. Our residents deserve better.

Community Eumundi lights up at night markets Eumundi was transformed into a sparkling celebration of Christmas last Friday at the first of the summer night markets. The event was jam packed with locals and visitors who were spoilt for choice with options for entertainment, fantastic food and great stalls. Family highlights included: craft workshops, a free outdoor movie, street performers, Santa on the fire truck, and festive music. Children who ventured into Dick Caplick park were awestruck by the colourful lights covering the playground and filling the trees. It was lovely too to take a drive down Memorial and see the buildings beautifully lit up. Don’t forget to head up to Discover Eumundi and see the building transform into the most fantastic animation of Santa’s Workshop.

Markets A J u icy B ite o u t of the E u m u ndi M arkets Jessica Creevey, Year 5, ESS Ignite English It is a bustling market day and music is ringing through your ears. You can smell hot dogs, chicken - even Asian food. However, all you want is an apple! But where can you get one? Just go to Kelly and Sandy’s Fruit and Vegetables! Kelly and Sandy have a wide range of produce. You can get all types of fruit and vegetables. You can also get nuts, dried fruit and honey. 85% of the produce

sold at their stall comes from a certified organic wholesaler, Kunara, at Forest Glen. Being certified organic means that the produce is chemical-free. Located across the road from the post office, Kelly and Sandy have worked at the Eumundi Markets for 32 years. This terrific stall is not only convenient to their farm, it also allows them to follow the ‘Bake it, Sew it, Grow it’ concept that they believe

Original Eu m u ndi Market u pdate Daniel West The festive season is well and truly here. If you haven’t already, take the time to drive through our market grounds at night. It really is quite magical. Even better, come to our Night Markets to appreciate the Christmas light sparkles combined with the buzz and excitement of what are arguably some of the best nights in Eumundi. We’ve engaged some topnotch performers this year, including Great Scott, Terry the Great, the fabulous – and exceptionally tall - Christmas Fairy, and Hotter Than Mustard Fire Twirlers. I have to say a great big thank you to the amazing team here at the OEM. From the ground

crew climbing trees, hanging lights and assembling our 5m Christmas tree, to the long hours, sleepless nights and detailed planning by Jan, Georgia and Katie. Gavin has had his work cut out for him as I change layouts, stall arrivals and decorating ideas as fast as I change my mind. Just in time for Christmas we have launched our new gift vouchers. Available through our website, I was amazed to see sales within hours of it going live. It’s bound to be a great Christmas gift for many this year. Merry Christmas to all and I wish everyone safe travels over the silly season.

the hall floor) and even in the foyer. We were quite envious of Eumundi State School, which used the hall for its end of year concerts, because it had a parent Tony Fowler, who supplied their lights and sound.

The vacant stage was reminiscent of just on twenty years ago when The Indee first started at the SOA. The stage then (much smaller) was daunting with only one entrance wing and not a light nor curtain to be had. For the first three years we used black painted plywood flats for curtains and hired lights. With only the barest facilities we had to be very innovative so we largely avoided the stage, doing plays in the round (on

Back then, being a new theatre, every show was a financial tightrope and hiring equipment was killing us so we started raffles and a bar and by 1998 we had enough in the kitty to buy some second hand lights and an old follow-spot. In 2000, with the newly enlarged stage, we finally splurged on some black wing curtains after a local Eumundi carpenter volunteered to make wooden arms to hang them from. Funny how things go full circle.

Books S u mmer reading R E C O M M E N D AT I O N S

I’ve just started reading The Bone Clocks by David Mitchell. The story, like Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas, is a saga from the past and into the future. It follows Holly Sykes, an out of control Irish teenager, from 1985 through her life and those of others to the future in 2046. This book is a mixture of social commentary, war reporting and Aboriginal storytelling, clothed in mystical fantasy adventure - there’s meat enough here for any reader to keep pages turning. Matt Brindley

I’m hoping to get a bit of perspective this summer by reading Walking Free by Munjed Al Muderis. It’s the true story of a young man who fled war-torn Iraq and arrived in Australia by boat as a refugee, spent months in a detention centre before going on to become one of the world’s leading pioneering surgeons. I heard an interview with Munjed on ABC radio and he was so gracious and generous - something to make us realise that our problems may not be so bad after all. Lil Staff

My summer holidays crafty book will be Making Peg Dolls and More by Margaret Bloom. It is the follow up to her successful first book Making Peg Dolls. I hear Bloom is putting her creations into action this time, by providing instructions to make them into toys that Spin, Fly and Bring Sweet Dreams! I think it sounds lovely and can’t wait to see what’s between the pages. I can’t go past an inspirational, creative books with pretty pictures! Aleta Bon

I’ll be reading Don Watson’s The Bush. I loved his 2008 American Journeys - and pretty much anything else he has written - so I anticipate that his take on our shared continent to be worth a look. Our national story has a continuing nostalgia for the interior, and yet nearly all of us cling to the coastal fringe, concentrated in cities. Looking forward to a good old mythshattering read. Duncan Sayers

A few years ago, I decided I “ought” to read more Australian literature. I’ve since come to appreciate just how good the best of it is. The Reality Bites nonfiction Festival introduced some of the very best and latest Australian nonfiction writing. I couldn’t resist buying Christmas presents for family and friends. At least that’s what I told myself. I’m going to have to get reading so I can hand them over, maybe not in such pristine condition! Judith Pattison

Health Matters

We are pleased to announce Dr Michael Harrison will be joining the team on the 13th January 2014. Michael is originally from the U.K and moved to Australia with his family in 2010, where he has worked as a GP in NSW. I love kick-ass women. So this is the book I am hoping Santa drops down my chimney (if I’ve been good). My Year Without Matches details Claire Dunn’s experience living for a year in the Australian bush learning survival skills, slowing down and learning how to survive sans matches. This is an incredibly empowering journey for anyone to undertake and I am sure Claire will bring some self-reflective insights to her experience, unlike Bear Grylls’ macho persona. Wild women surviving off the grid = awesome! Emma Iwinska

Jacks and Jokers by Matt Condon is the second installment of the Qld cops and corruption trilogy that swirls around the stench of what happens when a virtual One Party State manifests itself within our parliamentary democracy. This book spans the decade from the early 70s to the 80s during the infamous BjelkePeterson regime. A wake-up call to all of us who are seduced by politicians’ hollow promises and “law and order” distractions - whilst sleepwalking further in the dystopian nightmare prophesised by George Orwell in Animal Farm and 1984. Anthony Wynne-Hoelscher 13

Health Matters Decembeard – Bowel cancer awareness month Decembeard Australia encourages REAL men to grow a beard in the final month of the year to raise awareness and much needed funds for bowel cancer. Australia has one of the highest rates of bowel cancer in the world and both men and women are at risk. If detected before spreading beyond the bowel, survival for at least five years after diagnosis is around 90% and most people. The risk is greater if you – • are 50 years and over • have had an inflammatory bowel disease • have previously had special types of polyps, called adenomas in the bowel; • have a significant family history of bowel cancer polyps. Screening for bowel cancer is a simple test that your GP can organise for you. 4. Hug them. Be proud of them. Write positive notes and affirmations to build confidence. Put a special note in their lunch box on the first day of school so they know you are thinking of them. 5. Support them. High school, hormones, social media, peer pressure and life can create a difficult path to follow for teenagers… and their parents! Even if they seem to push you away, they still secretly want you to be there.

KIDS SHOWCASE CIRCUS SKILLS Luc & Nikki Gheysen The Cirque kids have been hard at work specialising in their chosen skills and we are all very excited about the showcase on Thursday 11 Dec. The fun event will include: expert unicyclers, jugglers, tight wire walkers and rolla-bolla performers. Groups of the kids are also working on acro-balance routines - plus an amazing mass hula-hoop performance and the finale, Cirque Kids Flying Trapeze specialists, who will defy death whilst performing on the trapeze. We would like to make a special mention to Lytton Battersby who has been working very hard and excelling on the flying trapeze. Lytton is progressing from a beginner to an intermediate level and is now swinging on the trapeze without any safety lines as well as working on performing back end tricks just like the professionals. Lytton is also starting to learn how to catch. Lytton is Eumundi’s first home grown flying trapeze artist, very exciting!

1. Communicate with your child. Have a one on one conversation about how they are feeling about high school. What are they expecting? Listening is priceless.

3. Find other families that have children going to the same school and see if you can get together. Then there will be a few familiar faces on the first day to boost confidence.

WHILE WE LIVE WE GROW W H

Another year of school is almost over. Holidays are coming! What comes after the holidays for both year six and year seven students? HIGH SCHOOL! What will the first day be like? How are they feeling? What can we do as parents to help make the first step into the large and sometimes confusing world of “Teenage Land” an experience that will set them up for happy and successful years ahead? What things will support them, boost their confidence and prepare them for that first day in a new school?

2. Share positive memories from your first day at a new school or High School.

Sport SWIMMING CLUB

Alasdair Scott Thursday nights have been particularly enjoyed by the younger swimmers, with several competing in their first carnivals this year. New members are always welcome. Recent meets at Cooroy, Kawana and Bundaberg have all seen excellent turnouts and results for the Eumundi Club.

As another year goes racing by the Eumundi Swim Club can look back on a year of major changes, several swimming firsts and some fantastic memories – and we can also look forward to some exciting times ahead. Time is all important in swimming, whether it be those early morning training sessions, qualifying times or personal bests! At Eumundi the focus is always on each swimmer doing their personal best and being part of a supportive and fun loving team. Head Coach Lachie McLean has settled into his new role and all the swimmers have responded well to his feedback and programs.

Special mention though to Kaitlyn Walker, who is the first Eumundi swimmer to attain a National’s qualifying time for the 100m Butterfly. Following Troy Carlson’s Qld Record and Zac Templeton’s performances in New Zealand as part of the Wide Bay representative team, our little club has much to be proud of. The dedication and attitude of all the Super Squad swimmers is a credit to each and every one of them, their families and their coach! For many of our swimmers, the target times and pinnacle event is the State Championships in Brisbane on December 13. It is a fantastic achievement for our club to have several swimmers competing as individuals and to have two girls relay teams entered. Good luck to them all.

M ore than j u st cricket ! Henry Long, Year 4, ESS Ignite English and delicious food from the canteen wafts through the air. The Cooroy-Eumundi Under 12 cricket team plays each Saturday morning and is competitive, yet friendly and supportive. This team plays against other cricket teams spread across the entire Sunshine Coast area. A range of teams exist at the club for older players too. There is an Under 14s, an Under 16s and four senior teams. The draws for these games are organised by the Sunshine Coast Cricket Association. The Cooroy-Eumundi Cricket Club is a happy, spirited club that caters for all ages, abilities and skills. For younger children the Cooroy-Eumundi Cricket Club has organised a T20 BLAST. Under lights, each Friday night of the season, many eager cricketers are running around the field with bats and balls in hands. The atmosphere is further enhanced by music blasting from speakers as the tempting aroma of hamburgers

An important aspect of the club is that children will gain friendship, learn and practice skills (batting, bowling and fielding) and develop team sportsmanship and discipline. If you’d like to get involved you can contact president John Hope, come to the club on training or game days at the Cooroy Sporting Complex (U10-Tuesday training, U12Wednesday training) or come with a friend who already plays.

Health Y o u r D aily R hythm In Oriental medicine the day and your body have an interconnected rhythm. Do you wake at 2am and struggle to get back to sleep? Are you prone to anxiety attacks in the middle of the day? When is the best time for a tricky business meeting? Or to connect with the ones you love? Let’s explore the way to get the best out of your day utilising some wisdom from the east. It’s time to tune in to the qi flow of our body and drop in to the day’s rhythm. The horary clock documents the qi flow through the body in a 24 hour cycle. The energy is particularly strong in a specific organ system during each two hour time period. By being aware of this energy flow and its implications, we can harness its power to get the best out of our day. 3-5am Lungs - This is the perfect time to wake up and inhale the day - you may want to steer towards the 5am end of the scale! The lungs relate to our inability to take in the new. The spiritual aspect of the lung is called the Po. It enters our body as we are born and we take our first breath and leaves when we exhale our last. It is seen as a very animalistic spirit that helps us to be in the now. If you have trouble being present, then this is the perfect time to wake, do some breathing exercises, meditation or qi gung. The lungs relate emotionally to grief, loss and sadness. If you are suffering from traumatic grief you may find you wake at 4am with a cough. Acupuncture and/or counselling may be a good option to help clear this pattern. 5-7am Large Intestine - Now it is time to get rid of the “crap.” Time for a morning poo! This is the time to let go of the past. If you are a hoarder or need to tidy that junk draw/cupboard/room this is the perfect time to clear out the stuff you no longer need. 7-9am Stomach - Breakfast time. The energy of the stomach is at its peak now, so it is the perfect time to eat your biggest meal of the day. While the stomach qi is strong in your body, you can effectively utilise your food to create energy and nourish your body. 9-11am Spleen - in Oriental medicine the spleen is intrinsically linked to cognitive

Emma Iwinska

function. Do you have an important project on? Are you studying? Need to stretch your grey matter? This is the perfect time to do mind work. 11am-1pm Heart - This is the time to check in with yourself and see if you are following your path. The heart connects through to our higher purpose. If things are out of balance it may be when you have an anxiety or panic attack. The heart relates to joy so if you are having lunch, be thankful, have a giggle, eat something you enjoy. Or you could nourish someone else’s spirit and put a love letter in a lunchbox! 1-3pm Small Intestine - Helps us to be discerning in life. Its function in the body is to decide which food nourishes (absorbs), and which food does not (passes onto the large intestine). This could be the perfect time to consider a contract or business deal. Schedule all tricky business meetings for this time of the day. 3-5pm Bladder - Regulates body fluids. If you haven’t drunk enough water this is the time to stock up. In Oriental medicine the emotional aspect of the bladder is fear. In bladder time you can excrete your fears. If fear is something that holds you back, this is the time to actively work through those fears and let them go. As the bladder relates to water in the body, it is a great time to go swimming and wash those fears away at the same time. 5-7pm Kidney - Relates to wisdom and willpower. Our kidneys are the batteries that help drive our body. It is considered our source energy in Oriental medicine - it is whence we come from. This kidney time is the perfect time to come “home” - ground yourself, connect to your roots and recharge. 7-9pm Pericardium - Both physiologically and spiritually is the protector of the heart. It governs our intimate relationships. This is the time to connect with loved ones. Read a story to a little one, call somebody you miss or be intimate with a partner. 9-llpm San Jiao Communication. While the pericardium relates to our intimate relationships, the san jiao relates to our relationship with the bigger world. If you 17

really absolutely desperately have to look at Facebook then this is the time to do it - but why not have a dance instead! 9-11pm is a good time to socialise. But if you are up early, or you work with people all day, then this is the perfect time to do the opposite and be asleep and resting so you can consolidate this energy to use the next day. If you are home and awake, why not spend some time outside, look at the stars and connect to the big world out there. If you do need to work, pick projects that relate to external relationships. 11-1am Gall Bladder - This is the most important time in the day to be asleep. Our yin is nourished and our body fixes and repairs itself. The gallbladder relates to decisionmaking. A healthy gallbladder shows good judgment and easily makes decisions that steer us on a balanced path. A weak gallbladder results in timidity and indecision while heat in the gallbladder manifests as aggression and reckless behaviour. 1-3am Liver - Liver heat is a classic cause of sleep disturbance and one of the most common patterns. Liver energy peaks at 2am and if you always seem to wake up at this time your liver is definitely out of balance. In oriental medicine the liver is responsible for storing the hun which translates approximately to the idea of the “soul” in the West. An irritated liver may result in the hun leaving the body while you sleep which can manifest as out-of-body experiences or paralysis type dreams. You may also wake at this time wanting to plan things planning is the forte of the liver. The liver also relates to feelings of anger and frustration and it is important to acknowledge these and replace them with feelings of kindness. If you do regularly wake at this time you definitely need a liver detox. If you notice a symptom regularly occurring at a certain time of day, it could be a cough, fatigue,

{ T H E G R E E N 11 December 2014

headache or an emotion, then it is worthwhile considering where the energy is in the 24 hour cycle. You can get more out of your day, increase your energy and feel more balanced by aligning yourself with the natural flow of energy through your system. Double Happiness is holding a free workshop on incorporating Oriental health wisdom into your day as part of their community health month. doublehappiness.net.au

Heritage A TRIBUTE TO EUMUNDI’S HEROES There were 87 men who enlisted from Eumundi to go to WW1. From 1914 to 1919, trees were planted with plaques at the base as living memorials to the 20 men who did not return - and each has a story to be told. These trees are now central to the town’s Anzac Day walk and commemoration. 25 April 2015 will mark the Centenary of Anzac Day. The Eumundi and District Historical Association (EHA) has received funding from the Australian Government’s Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program, which assists communities to undertake Centenary projects that commemorate the Australian servicemen and women in the First World War. The EHA project to commemorate this important date will consist of three standalone but linked components: • Creation of a book on the men who enlisted from Eumundi and Eumundi men who made the supreme

sacrifice in WW1. It will capture a sense of the impact on the town and surrounding area and the repercussions especially on farming families where brothers, sons, fathers and uncles did not return from the war or returned unable to work or socialise. • Design and production of story panels about Eumundi’s Memorial Trees to be placed near three of the largest fig trees in the main street, also telling the viewer they can find more at Discover Eumundi (DE) Heritage and Visitor Centre.

Wendy Birrell • Production of audio and visual stories which will be internet accessible. A skilled interviewer will talk to descendants and local historians and include an audio slideshow using information researched by DE volunteers with images from the heritage collection. For the project to be successful help is needed to find more information, photos and descendants of the 20 men to interview. The names of the men are:

A F I N A L YA R N F R O M F red C lark of E u m u ndi Fredrick Thomas Clark was born 16 August 1927 at Sunnybrae Hospital in Eumundi, the second son of farmer’s Thomas and Edith Clark. They lived at Doonan Rd, Eumundi, where they grew crops and cut timber. Fred and brother Jim used to ride to school on the horse. Dad would tell us that on the way to school it was faster to walk, but on the way home the horse would gallop! Fred achieved excellent results at school and in 1941 attained a scholarship to Nambour High School. He started work at Highway Motors (Wilson Brothers Garage) in 1942 and by 1947 was qualified mechanic. In 1954 he and Jim bought the garage. They owned the local tow truck – there were many instances of having to drag cars back up after running off the road on Range Rd (now Sunrise Rd) – he would climb over the cliff edge to attach tow cables and sometimes even tie the tow truck down so it wasn’t pulled over the edge. Once a meat truck went over the edge and caught on fire, everyone who went out to help tow it brought

Fred loved fishing, sport and travelling, playing tennis and teaching badminton to locals. Square Dancing was another pleasure and he met his wife Val Tebbutt in Gympie. They married in ‘65 after many visits to the picture theatre in Eumundi. In ‘62 Fred began the first school bus from Doonan to the high school in Cooroy and this bus run was known as Fred’s Bus until the late ‘80’s. 18

With a growing family after the birth of daughter’s Joy and Kay, Fred and Val moved to Doonan Rd. Here they established extensive gardens with an abundance of flowers, fruit trees and birds. Dad also ran the Eumundi picture theatre from the School of Arts Hall. He had to sell his MG to buy a car that would fit the large, heavy film reels. The Eumundi and Yandina theatre’s would swap film reels during the intermission – each would drive half way, swap the reels on the (old) highway

home a feed of meat that night! Fred was very proud to have run in the Olympic Torch Relay in 1956, he ran one mile from near the School of Arts Hall to the beginning of the Bruce Highway. He remembers that the torch was heavy but you had to hold it high aloft as the smoke was terribly thick.

and return to finish the show. One night it was very foggy and John Etheridge (Sala Thai) remembers being in the car from Yandina when they couldn’t see anything in the fog. They drove and drove and ended up missing each other – so Dad drove all the way to Yandina that night! Eddie Seib was one of the projectionists too, with Edith Clark, Dad’s Mum being on the ticket counter. She didn’t let anyone sneak past her! Dad remembered playing Rock Around the Clock for a week solid - it was so popular! Dad’s nephew would rewind the big reels. My Dad and his Brother Jim and Jim’s son Les, would go to the Rifle Range in North Arm. Les was a good shot and won the 60 yard and 80 yard divisions – the prize was beer, so Dad and Jim drank the beer and Les got the bottle caps! We remember a generous father who devoted a lot of time to our interests. A lover of nature, he enjoyed the gardens and flowers around his ‘unit’, and always remained, Fred Clark of Eumundi.

• 2 x Bananas

Add coconut water only if you need to, as it’s blending away, so it stays thick - but not so thick that you need a spoon to eat it.

• 2 x tbsp Good Mix - (from the crew @ good mix superfoods)

Get some fresh or frozen raspberries, add one hand full to a blender, splash in coconut water, zap it, adding more coconut water if needed to get a semi runny consistency, then pour into a glass or jar until about 4 mls deep.

• Raspberry puree

Wash your blender.

The randomness of what the puree does is half the fun of making this smoothie!

• 1/2 tbsp Good Mix & 1 Mint sprig as garnish

Now put bananas, dates, Vanilla Protein Powder, coconut water and Good Mix into the blender, blend until mixed, then blend again to

Garnish with a little extra Good Mix, add a sprig of mint and BOOM, you’re on your way to healthy yumminess, enjoy!

• 7 x Dates • 1 x tsp of Vanilla Protein Isolate • 1 x cup of Coconut water

Sustainable summer During summer, growth in our gardens really races ahead. Given the right nourishment and protection, your garden should reward you with bountiful produce. Failure to put in place a few basic essentials, however, and you’ll be left with hard dry soil and crops that bolt to seed. Before it gets too hot, it’s a great idea to give your garden a bit of a nutrient boost. These vital minerals, along with the pointers mentioned below, should help to keep you in fresh fruit, veg and flowers all summer long.

T hree factors for summer success 1. Hydration: If your soil has become hydrophobic (water repellent) or very sandy, add a wetting agent or water crystals,

Claudette Betterridge

which will increase the soil’s water holding capacity and keep moist for longer. If you don’t have an irrigation system it is best to push your hose slightly into the garden, around 50-75mm deep, so the water is closer to the roots and less is lost to wind and evaporation. This also eliminates foliage sunburn - droplets of water act like a magnifying glass in harsh sunlight. Water early morning or late afternoon to minimise water loss, dig through lots of compost and organic matter and mulch well, and you’ll have a healthy, robust garden that will bounce back after even the hottest days.

day before planting them out. Planting seeds directly into the ground can be just as successful as long as you provide shelter. Leafy branches stuck into the ground will give dappled sunlight, an umbrella provides light shade, but not much beats a shade cloth for protection. If a heatwave looms, draping an old sheet over plants may just save next week’s salads. Also consider planting herbs and greens in pots that you can move into shade easily. Group plants according to water requirements. This will not only ensure they flourish but limit the amount of time tending to them.

2. Protection: Baking sun can wreak all sorts of damage especially on seedlings. If you can, raise seeds in a greenhouse during the hottest months. Just remember to harden them off in the sun for a few hours a

3. Competition: Weeding is especially important during summer. Generally, weeds are hardier than the food species we plant. Their roots are deeper and leaves more robust. Removing them will ensure competition for

resources is limited. Competition can also come from overloading your vege patch. Planting crops too closely or not thinning out directsown seedlings as they grow can result in spindly plants from overcrowding and not enough sunlight.

But you won’t find one of these around here – this was in Los Angeles and the species, Stagomantis limbata, is endemic to south-western USA.

We thought that maybe ET had sent down one of his little friends or that maybe the creature we found lurking in the garden was straight out of an Aliens movie. But unless it had secret powers it was too little to do any harm. It was sitting on a rose we were about to cut. When we tried to pick the little creature up it made no attempt at escape but went straight into attack mode. It kept on jumping onto the camera lens almost every time we tried to get a photograph. It was clearly annoyed and did some acrobatic stunts to intimidate us.

Various species of Praying Mantis (the Mantid family) occur in most countries where there is a tropical or sub-tropical climate. The name Praying Mantis comes from the way they hold their forelimbs in a prayerlike attitude. Mantis is a Greek word for prophet, or soothsayer. Here on the Sunshine Coast we occasionally find one of the three local species. The Garden Mantis, Orthodora ministralis, is a 40 mm long bright green insect, fairly common but not often seen as their green colour blends perfectly with the vegetation they favour. When picked up they certainly do not go through the dramatic bluff routine as do their Hollywood cousins but generally make a run for it. Mantids live up to their ferocious look; they are implacable ambush predators in their hunt for other insects. They have large eyes on triangular

Kon Hepers

heads which they can swivel through 180 degrees. This means they can cover the total field of vision and scope any predator sneaking up from directly behind. Their strong forelimbs, armed with rows of sharp spikes are used to seize and hold their prey while the mantis bites its head off and proceeds with devouring the (usually) still living insect. Most Praying mantises have two pairs of wings: the forewings are small and tough and used as part of the bluff routine as well as a cover for the pair of long flight wings. Mantids are comparatively poor flyers and prefer to run but at night they do fly to lights, possibly to capture prey insects like moths which are attracted to the lights. One of the notable features of Praying Mantis is their more than casual attitude to reproduction. Commonly, during copulation the female bites off her partner’s head. Undeterred, the male continues his duty for hours until the task is completed, whereupon the

female commences to make a meal of him. Definitely lacking in romance! Some 48 hours later she lays up to 100 eggs and encapsulates them in a kind of purse called an ootheca that she deposits in vegetation and which serves to protect the young until the eggs hatch. Mantids belong to the group of insects called Exopterygotes (it also includes grasshoppers, crickets and may others) in which the young “hatchlings”, known as nymphs, look just like the adults except for lack of wings. That is, they do not have the larva to pupa to adult insect stages as do, for example, moths and butterflies in the Endopterygote group. After a few moults the nymphs surviving the cannibalism of their siblings become mature mantids. Praying Mantis are often confused with Stick Insects but are not closely related to these herbivorous Phasmatids. Surprisingly, the very close relatives of the elegant mantids are Termites and Cockroaches.

Letters A VISUAL DELIGHT Thank you for a wonderful Christmassy edition of the Green [209]. It was a visual delight from cover to cover with so many wonderful ideas for the coming festive season. We are so lucky to have a free local magazine of such quality in our community, with so many local contributors. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy 2015 on behalf of Foundation for Culture and Arts Eumundi. Clytie Glass, Tewantin.

G oodbye T yson For the past three and a half years we have had the pleasure of working with Tyson Pardon in our Eumundi Square, Community Projects Worldwide store. Sadly (for us!) he’s moving to the Gold Coast to further his studies in medicine and his last day will be 31 Dec. We would like to sincerely thank him for a job very well done - no request was ever too hard or too difficult. We will all miss his positive personality and genuine love of our fair trade philosophy, which we are sure he will continue with throughout life with his lovely wife Claire. Cirque Espace are not only fantastic people but they are the ultimate professionals in providing a safe, fun and unique environment for the kids. Cirque Espace brings a unique, visually exciting space to Eumundi that is enjoyed by locals as well as tourists of all ages (yes, I have tried the trapeze!) and we would be mad if we let this opportunit y go. Thank you so much Nikki and Luc and good luck in finding the right space for Cirque Espace. W. Walker, Eumundi.

I would just like to express my absolute pleasure of having Cirque Espace make their base in Eumundi. How lucky is this town of ours! My three children have been attending their after school classes this term and words are not enough to describe the pleasure my kids get from this. Not only are my children excited and enthusiastic about going, their increased confidence, strength and fitness have been an added bonus. Nikki and Luc who own missing from Rafter Estate between Cash Rd and Sunrise Rd in Eumundi and has not yet been found. The family have grid-searched the bush where he went missing, and systematically canvassed their local neighbourhood, and also the Yandina Bli Bli Rd and Dunethin Rock area where there was a sighting of a dog fitting Charlie’s description at 7.30am on the 25 October. Posters with photos and contact numbers have been put up everywhere the family can think of where dog lovers might go, in hope that someone might have seen him. Overwhelmingly the response from people has been nothing but kindness and compassion. Charlie is a beautiful little dog, with a lovely disposition, and quickly became like the like a fifth child.

We are all unbearably sad at the loss of his little presence in our lives. Where is he? Did he come to grief in the bush and despite our searching, his body not been found? He is a smart fit little dog. We don’t think this has happened. Has he been picked up and taken miles away? Has another family adopted him? Is he with another family? We finish with a plea for the return of Charlie. A generous reward is offered for his safe return to any Vet or RSPCA. Lynn and Chris Kaye
