Notes

Last year saw BIG change for the Green with a new look, layout and website. This year I’m really looking forward to building upon last year’s efforts and again working with such a wonderful gang of Green people. We all volunteer or work part time, so every Eumundi Green is made and delivered into your hands with pride and passion. It is important to us that this magazine reflects the many interests of our diverse, hardworking, creative community and is an informative, entertaining read written by locals about local interests and events. And, with wonderful farming heritage, our growing population of young families, as well as professional tree-changers making Eumundi their home - it’s vital that The Green relates to Eumundiites of all ages and backgrounds. We are always keen to hear what’s happening in your area, love getting your photos and letters, and can’t run without our incredible volunteers. If you’d like to get involved or share something please email editor@eumundigreen.com.

Business I talian ice - cream and coffee on M emorial Leo Wiles

Circus finds its permanent spot

Memorial Dr matriarch Corinne Souse likes to keep it in the family. Already the big-hearted Pearls for Girls owner works alongside her bubbly brunette daughter in-law. Now one of Corinne’s three sons Matthew will be working in the same strip following the opening of Affogatos, sandwiched between fashionable Boutiq and eclectic Vanilla Cove. As the name suggests this delish gelato bar comes with its very own barista and owner Matthew who plans to keep his doors open five days a week to serve Italian style icecream and coffee – yummo.

There has been a solution to Cirque Espace not having a permanent location in the town. Cirque Espace and the Eumundi Square Micro Business Facility have creatively fused to establish a completely unique, entertaining and interactive market experience for onlookers and a thrill zone for those who love all things Circus. This saved us from moving interstate to Perth just as we were about to sign a contract and leave for good. After spending eight months with Council to no avail, a local business owner came up with this amazing solution so the iconic Cirque Espace can now have a permanent home.

COMPETITION WINNER

Within the inner courtyard of Eumundi Square a full size Flying-trapeze and Bungeetrampoline have been rigged for an amazing acrobatic and interactive spectacle. Marvel at the flying-trapeze artists as they fly high above the buildings. Gasp at the bungeetrampoline ‘acrobats’ as they soar above Eumundi Square in

The program guides businesses through their export journey and identifies potential international markets for their products and services. Register your interest at council's business website.

Win with the Environment Levy From 12 January, you'll find the 2013/14 Environment Levy annual report at your local café, waiting room, library or customer service centres and on council’s website. Complete the two minute survey for a chance to win one of four $50 vouchers. Survey closes 23 February 2015.

Waste community engagement Residents are invited to have their say on the new waste strategy for the Sunshine Coast. To make your voice heard, view the strategy on council’s website, in council libraries and customer contact centres from 12 January then complete the feedback form. Submissions close 13 February 2015. For more information, visit council’s website.

Youth Summit survey Local young people aged 15 to 25 years are invited to have a say on key issues that affect them. Have a voice about your future and complete the Youth Summit survey before 9 February. Visit council’s website for more details.

Highly Strung Picture Framing & Art Supplies is at the corner of Low Street and Memorial Drive, opposite the pool. Picture framing, canvas stretching and art supplies are our core business, but we aim to be a one-stop shop for all things related to art and framing. We also offer packing and freight services, mat cutting, frame repairs and supply hanging systems. How long have you been in business in Eumundi? Highly Strung has been in town for coming up to 15 years, although it has grown quite a lot in that time. It has been in its current form for five years. What made you choose Eumundi to base your business? Eumundi has a wonderful village feel and a great sense of community that makes for a great working environment. Couple this with the fact that the local area has a strong arts culture and is home to quite a number of very talented artists and you have a great place for a framing and art supplies business, both in terms of a working environment and proximity to our customers. What is the best thing about working here? I love the village feel of Eumundi and really enjoy the relationships we build with our regular customers. It helps us to feel that we are providing a valuable and worthwhile service rather than just “running a business” which is very satisfying. What is the worst thing you’ve found about working here? There is no bank! If we run out of change it’s a dash to Cooroy, which can be quite tricky given the hours the bank is open. What would you like to see change in our business district? Obviously a bank in town would be really helpful for the business and I think a supermarket of some sort would also be a great addition. I’d love to see some of the empty shops fill up and perhaps another gallery in town.

Community Rotary Pride of Work Awards Joyce Turnbull, Eumundi Rotary Club Eumundi Rotary has given its first Pride of Work Awards to four worthy recipients working in the Eumundi community. Pride of Work is an approved Rotary project that started in 1975 via the Rotary Club of Pennant Hills NSW and is an important part of Vocational Service, the second avenue of Rotary service. President of Eumundi Rotary Les Godwin said though the club was still in its infancy, membership has “blossomed” and the Rotarians were developing a service ethic that sits well with Rotary’s worldwide values and services, and will in time offer considerable local community benefit. The annual Pride of Work awards acknowledge individuals for the way they work with customers and colleagues, whether as owners or employees of one of Eumundi's businesses. This award is about noticing those who not only do their job well, but who do it with a smile and give that little ‘extra’.

Eumundi Rotary President Les Godwin (left) presenting Eumundi Meats owner Jon McMahon with his Pride of Work Award. Jon was recognised for his friendliness, generosity to charities, support of other businesses, and his knowledge of organic, free range food.

Chawin Anthasri received a Pride of Work award for making patrons at Sala Thai feel welcome and special and by presenting beautifully dressed and clearly proud of her heritage.

Barista and waitress Vicki Miller at The Fig Tree, (fourth from the left) with the exercise group who nominated her for a Pride Work Award because of her professionalism and friendly, consistent service to regulars over many years.

Community E D V R esidents G ro u p EDV Residents Group has a key New Year's Resolution: We are determined that every eligible resident in our beautiful Noosa Hinterland gets to vote on whether they want a boundary change or not. Whoever we are, whatever our views, all of us deserve the opportunity to have our voice heard! A majority view should prevail it does not matter if you agree with the EDV Residents Group or disagree, you should have the right for a vote on this important community issue. In the end, what binds us all together is a passionate love of our area; that is why we live here and all we disagree about is the best way to protect this for us, our children and grandchildren - being part of Noosa or the Sunshine Coast Council. Why is having a vote so important? It enables the whole issue to be sorted out by an independent umpire and the wishes of the majority of the community to be respected. We will keep pushing for all EDV residents to be able to put their viewpoint via the ballot box. It is not rocket science, it is called democracy!

Johanne Wright

to stand by the principle of representing the views of the majority of residents. At present, we believe that a significant proportion of the Noosa Hinterland community has been disenfranchised by the Sunshine Coast Council. We are outraged that the Mayor has basically imposed his will on all of us, is only prepared to hear voices that support his desire not to lose any more of his "turf", and has actively taken the part of one community group against another. This is unheard of in local politics - a Council forming an Alliance with a very small group of residents against a longer established, far larger resident group and in the process peddling misinformation about that group and the benefits that have been given to our area. Council's role is to listen to all perspectives and to take a rational and objective view of the situation, something sadly missing to date. Bring on the vote!

P roposed flight path over H interland Margaret Kovacs The highly unpublicised proposed Sunshine Coast Regional Council (SCRC) airport expansion project which includes the new runway will channel flights over: Eumundi, Yandina Creek, Verrierdale, Cooroy Mountain, Lake McDonald, Tinbeerwah, Weyba Downs, Doonan, Noosa North Shore and Marcus Beach. Here are a few facts: SCRC is currently using significant rate payers money to distribute the “Shaping Our Future” glossy brochure which is clearly incorrect. The Sunshine Coast can continue to be accessed by jet aircraft and the CASA exemption for narrow runways ended on 13 November as the Council would be fully aware. Lengthening and widening of the existing runway at $80 million has largely been ignored by SCRC in favour of a more costly $345 -$400 million new runway. Sunshine Coast regional airport is running at a debt of $30 million. At present there are only two international flights to SCRA; both are from New Zealand and subsidised by the Govt with a large proportion of the passengers being frequent fliers.

Speaking of democracy, our elected members have a key role to play. We expect that our new local state member will give more than lip service to a vote but go in hard to bat for ALL the residents here. We expect our local Councillors

Virgin boss Mr Borghetti has questioned why the region would spend millions on an

upgrade when Brisbane airport was only an hour away and made it clear that Virgin had no need at this time to increase its services to the region. There has been no study of the adverse impact on properties within the EIS Impact Zone (40 km radius) north west of the airport despite the fact that 77% of arrivals will adopt this flight path and will be doing so at well below the 5000 feet level which Airspace Australia regards as creating “significant aircraft noise.” Hinterland residents will be subjected to high levels of noise pollution. The value of properties will decline as people choose not to live here to avoid noise and pollution. Not considered in the EIS are a variety of potential adverse environmental impacts arising from sighting a new runway on an ecologically sensitive flood plain, including: reduction in habitat for vulnerable and endangered species; increased noise, light, air and water pollution; and future potential climate change impacts. Submissions for the EIS have now closed but we can still have our say by contacting our political representatives and asking for their support before the elections.

O u r local candidates Currently our local members of the Queensland Government are Glen Elmes (LNP) for Noosa and Peter Wellington (Ind) for Nicklin. Both are running for reelection. In the upcoming state election on Saturday 31 January, the candidates for our region (in the order in which they will appear on the ballot) are: NICKLIN

NOOSA

RAETHEL, Justin Australian Labor Party

WOODS, Ian Palmer United Party

DOOLAN, Julie The Greens

DENHAM, Mark Australian Labor Party

WELLINGTON, Peter William Independant

ELMES, Glen LNP

TRACE, Matt LNP

Key areas of concern for this community are: • unemployment, • the rising cost of living, • the availability of good health care without extensive waiting periods. More specifically of concern for our area is; • the proposed airport, • the proposed boundary change, • road safety, • family friendly townships, • protecting our coastal environment, • clean drinking water.

date in your diary. World-renowned ‘Placemaker’ Gilbert Rochecouste joined me on Saturday 10 January for a stallholder briefing about the future direction of the markets. Gilbert has worked with a wealth of major councils and big businesses to create engaging public spaces. The briefing was a great opportunity to present new initiatives for our market and glean feedback and ideas from stallholders. There was an overwhelming feeling of positivity, and ideas are flowing to improve and uplift our iconic market.

Speaking of events, we’re thrilled to again be hosting the PRIDE Fair Day, taking place on Saturday 28 February as part of The Sunshine Coast Pride Festival. This event celebrates the Coast’s diversity by bringing together the LGBTIQ Gilbert Rochecouste briefing stallholders about the direction of OEM. community, their friends and family in a fun and supportive environment. I don’t know why I think I’ll have more time to read in the summer: a subliminal illusion from my past, or just good book promotion? Whether I get time to read them or not, books are a big part of the holiday period for me. I usually have a pile I‘ve been wanting to get to, then added to with Christmas present books - those to be given and those received - and articles I’ve been meaning to read. The earnest, read worthy titles and ought to’s: King Leopold’s Ghost, by Adam Hochschild, “a story of greed, terror and heroism in colonial Africa”; The Last Woman Hanged, “the terrible true story of Louisa Collins” by Caroline Overington; and Peter Carey’s new book about political sabotage and subterfuge in cyberspace, Amnesia. Not much idle reading in that lot! A friend from my book club saved the day by loaning me Anne Patchett’s This is the Story of a Happy Marriage, a series of essays and short stories about the author’s life and writing

career. It was just the right book at just the right time for me. Books that someone presses into your hands saying “read this!” are such a gift. Even if you don’t agree, you both learn something: books need to be shared. A surprise favourite for me, and one I’ve been pressing on people indiscriminately, is The life-changing magic of tidying up: the Japanese art of decluttering and organising by Marie Kondo. It’s a lovely little hardback (wouldn’t buy it any other way) written by an admittedly eccentric Japanese women who says that ninety per cent of her thoughts are about tidying. Kondo manages to inspire and enlighten (pardon the pun) without prissiness or guilt and with just enough pop psychology, but she doesn’t mess around either. The section on clothing begins, “Place every item of clothing in the house on the floor. Make sure you have gathered every last piece of clothing.” Now you know what you’re in for. I’m pressing this book into your hands.

Are you aware of your pelvic floor muscle? I have come across quite a number of women with pelvic floor issues in the last few months and the problem with your pelvic floor is that it is never discussed until you have a problem! It can be hard to talk to friends about it and the ads on the TV for pads make it sound like it is normal to have leaking when you laugh later in life – but it’s not! The statistics are high; 50% of mothers and 30% of all women experience pelvic organs prolapse (POP). Since exercise can initiate or aggravate this condition, it is a good idea to use a fitness professional to provide exercise programs that protect the positioning of the female pelvic organs if you are in the high risk group. POP is not an ‘old ladies’ disease. Even women in their twenties, who have never given birth, can experience it. Though it is not a life threatening condition, prolapse can have a seriously negative impact on a

woman’s quality of life and selfesteem. Advanced prolapse is a devastating condition both physically and emotionally. Pelvic floor prolapse can also happen to men but this usually results in a hernia on the outside, not internally. The female pelvic organs (bladder, urethra, uterus, vagina, and rectum) are kept in their anatomically correct positions by a network of elements working in synergy. One of these dominant elements is the pelvic floor muscle group. These muscles seal the pelvic outlet and provide a shelf for the pelvic organs to sit upon. Their constant automated contractions, provoked by increases of intra-abdominal pressure, eliminates any opening in the pelvic floor though which POP could occur and stabilises the organs in their right place. So how severe can it become? Once an organ is dislodged from its correct positioning,

it is possible for the descent to continue until eventually it creates a protruding bulge outside the vagina. This can happen slowly and progressively, or suddenly due to physical strain. It is so important to recognise a weak pelvic floor early, before any sagging and weakness occurs so it can be treated naturally through exercises. It is important that you know you are doing the pelvic floor lifts correctly, because as a personal trainer it is one muscle I can’t see you flexing! Sourcing a professional to talk you through how it feels and the exercises you can do at home to prevent pelvic floor problems is highly recommended. Awareness and education are the keys to protecting yourself against any pelvic floor issues before they become a problem. If you think you have pelvic floor weakness seek help now; it is just a muscle that needs strengthening.

Outdoors B io B u gs tackle weedy vines

Landcare have the ability to reproduce via underground tubers. Some landholders have reported finding Cat’s Claw tubers the size of a 44 gallon drum. Madeira vine also produces aerial tubers which resemble a potato, and which propagate all too readily upon dropping to the forest floor and surviving for years.

Triffid like trees covered in Cat’s Claw Creeper vine At this time of year Madeira (not the fortified wine variety) and Cat’s Claw Creeper vines are up trees, flowering and seeding, spreading their devastation widely throughout the region. Several years ago, the cream coloured Madeira flowers, which have been likened to a lamb’s tail, and the bright yellow flowers of the Cat’s Claw Creeper vine were so attractive that many unwitting gardeners actually planted these South American immigrants. Today it is widely known that both Madeira and Cat’s Claw Creeper

are extremely destructive vine species. Both vines smother and choke vegetation, engulfing and killing mature trees. Also, where these vines smother vegetation on river banks, considerable devastation occurs during flooding, as weakened trees are uprooted, invariably resulting in massive erosion and unacceptably high levels of sediment entering the waterways. Physical and chemical removal of large infestations of Madeira and Cat’s Claw Creeper vine is rarely successful. Both species

Cat’s Claw Creeper also easily propagates itself via its papery seed which is contained in a flattened pod. When the pod releases the seed they spread on the wind for miles around. While cutting the vine at the base of trees goes some way to stopping Cat’s Claw Creeper seeding, this is not a wholly successful way of eliminating the species due to the underground tubers. Madeira vine should not be severed since this promotes the production of masses of aerial tubers, the production of which needs to be curtailed by the use of a suitable herbicide without cutting the stem. Bio-control agents have been identified for both species in the form of small insects. The

bugs prey on the leaves of these species, weakening the health of the vines and reducing their viability. The technique for spreading the insects is to plant vines already infected with these helpful little critters into infestations of both vines. A purpose built facility at Landcare propagates the vines and the insects for provision to landholders to plant in infested areas. Just like any plant, these infected vines need some tending to ensure that the plants survive and the “bugs” thrive. Since the insects have minds of their own they are invariably not available on demand and need to be propagated when in a suitable stage of development. Landholders interested in trying to control both Madeira and Cat’s Claw are urged to contact Landcare and register interest in obtaining the biocontrol agents to help stop the spread of these destructive vines. For more information, contact Landcare 5483 8866 or admin@ gympielandcare.org.au
